Global ‘best wishes’ to King Charles

Global leaders, politicians and community leaders have wished King Charles III a “speedy recovery” following the shock news that he has started treatment for cancer.

Buckingham Palace stunned the nation and world in a statement about his health on Monday evening.

A ‘separate issue of concern’ was discovered during the King’s recent prostate treatment in London at the end of last month, the statement noted, adding that ‘subsequent diagnostic tests’ had identified a form of cancer. The King had begun a ‘schedule of regular treatments’. Doctors had advised he postpones ‘public-facing duties’ but will continue ‘state business and official paperwork’ as usual.

King Charles is ‘wholly positive’ about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty, added the statement.

News crews were outside Clarence House where the Royal Standard was flying, Palace officials are not believed to be planning updates despite the clamour from global broadcasters.

He’s now at Sandringham.

Bibi turns down Hamas hostage deal

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has turned down a three-stage 135-day ceasefire plan from Hamas following a proposal from Qatari and Egyptian mediators.

Speaking at a press conference last night Netanyahu is determined to destroy Hamas as the conflict in Gaza intensifies.

Despite intense pressure to agree a deal from hostage families and global leaders, Netanyahu described the terms of negotiation as “bizarre” and were “not going anywhere”.

“There is no other solution but a complete and final victory,” he noted. “If Hamas will survive in Gaza, it’s only a question of time until the next massacre.”

The plan came 24 hours after news broke in the New York Times that 31 of the 136 hostages held in Gaza are dead.

Families of the 32 hostages have been informed.

US Secretary of State Blinken met key officials over the past 48 hours in his fifth visit to the region since the October 7 terror attack.

Israel’s war cabinet evaluated the Hamas deal. Stage one would see the release of Israeli female hostages, males under 19, the elderly and sick for Palestinian women and minors in Israeli prisons. Israel must allow the reconstruction of hospitals and IDF withdrawal from populated areas of the Strip. Israeli male hostages would be released for

Palestinian prisoners and withdrawal of IDF forces from Gaza in stage two. Hamas would release bodies and remains in a third stage for more prisoners.

US President Joe Biden described Hamas’s response as “a little over the top”.

Earlier this week Opposition leader Yair Lapid offered support to Netanyahu if Finance Minister Smotrich’s Religious Zionism Party and National Security Minister Ben Gvir’s Jewish Power are removed from office.

Following a meeting with Netanyahu, Lapid said: “The most important thing is to get the hostages back.”

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told NBC’s Meet the Press: “Everybody wants an end to the war. But for this to happen all the hostages need to come home and Hamas needs to no longer pose a threat to Israel.”

Defence Minister Yom Gallant addressed Hamas’s leadership including Yahya Sinwar on Monday.

“Sinwar goes from hideout to hideout, is unable to communicate with his surroundings, and in recent days, IDF troops have found significant materials in the places where he had recently been, and thanks to them, we are deepening our grip on Hamas’s plans,” he said.

Gallant added there was “panic and distress” in the group’s hierarchy with the IDF progressing.

‘Total victory’ Bibi tells Latrun troops

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the 8104th Battalion of the 179th Brigade at the IDF Armoured Corps Memorial at Latrun on Monday.

Netanyahu spoke with battalion company commanders, led by IDF Chief Armoured Officer Brig.-Gen. Ohad Maor, and was briefed on activities since the outbreak of the war last October.

“I am greatly impressed by your fighting spirit, unity in combat and dedication to the goal,” he said. “I told

“Total victory is essential because it ensures the security of Israel. Total victory is the only way in which we can ensure additional historic peace agreements, which await. Total victory will strike a mortal blow against Iran, Hezbollah, the Houthis and of course Hamas.

“There is no substitute. One need only to think of what would happen without total victory. The displaced will not return, the next massacre will only be a matter of time and Iran, Hezbollah and others will simply celebrate here and destroy the Middle East. Students ostracised since 10/7

Peers heard that Jewish university students have suffered physical abuse since the October 7 terror attack.

Testimony was given by 25 students from across the UK at a House of Lords roundtable event by StandWithUs UK. Lord Ian Austin hosted the private event attended by Lord Polak and Baroness Barran.

Students addressed intimidation, ostracisation from peers, the politicisation of student unions and neglect from university administrations.

St Andrews student Annie Gishen described instances of abuse including a “Magen David necklace being ripped off a student” and how an “egg was thrown at a visibly Jewish student wearing a kippah”.

Annie also described how she had to leave her student accommodation because her

presence there with her Israeli flag made her flatmate uncomfortable and “complicit in Israel’s war crimes”.

Lord Polak expressed deep worry at hearing the experiences of students.

“The main concern is the lack of

accountability and action taken by the university administrations,” he said.

Queen Mary University student, Benjamin Lea, shared how societies shared social media posts and statement praising Hamas and the October 7 massacre with

no repercussions.

“It is vital representatives of the UK government are under no illusions about the extremity of the situation on UK university campuses for Jewish and Israeli students,” commented Director of Campus Affairs at Stand With Us, Daniel Marcus who chaired the meeting.

“These students are exceptional in their bravery however their experiences are sadly far from exceptional and are fast becoming the norm. There must be stronger accountability for university administrations and student unions and zero tolerance for bullying, intimidation and extremism within our academic bodies.”

The gathering was part of StandWithUs ensuring students and communities can combat antisemitism and Israel misinformation. The meeting will contribute to a report on university campus life.

CAA consider Miller judgement

Campaign Against Antisemitism is considering its options after Bristol Employment Tribunal ruled this week that Prof.

David Miller was unfairly dismissed by the University of Bristol in 2021 because of his anti-Jewish conspiracy theories.

The tribunal found Miller’s misconduct ‘extraordinary and ill-judged’ and deserved disciplinary action but not his dismissal.

Miller’s compensation was cut and he was found ‘culpable and blameworthy’.

The Union of Jewish Students described the judgment as a “dangerous precedent” what can lawfully be said on campus about Jewish students and societies at the centre of their social life.

“This will ultimately make Jewish students less safe,” a spokesman added.

The University of Bristol is “disappointed” with the judgement, noting in a statement: “We recognise that these matters have caused deep concern for many, and that members of our community hold

very different views from one another. We would, therefore, encourage everyone to respond in a responsible and sensitive way in the current climate.”

Miller was sacked by the university shortly after CAA started a lawsuit on behalf of students against the institution. Miller sued the University.

Following the judgement a CAA spokesperson said that until the case, the exact reasons for Miller’s sacking by Bristol were “kept from the public”.

CAA explained: “It is now clear that, despite its adoption of the International Definition of Antisemitism, Bristol’s failure to recognise that Prof. Miller’s comments constituted antisemitism, as well as its failure to consider some of his most egregious comments, opened the way for today’s judgment. But even so, the tribunal found that Prof. Miller’s misconduct was ‘extraordinary and ill-judged’ and deserving of disciplinary action, albeit that it did not warrant dismissal. He was found to be ‘culpable and blameworthy’, and, if he had been fired for the right reasons, the result today may have been different.

“Importantly, the tribunal drastically slashed Prof.

Miller’s compensation, including due to his behaviour since being dismissed, which the tribunal found led to a ‘realistic chance that the claimant would have been dismissed’ anyway.”

CAA added: “We are deeply concerned by the way in which the University of

Bristol has handled this matter over the course of years. We hope and expect that Bristol will appeal this decision. We are considering the matter with our lawyers.”

Rahman Lowe represented Miller and announced the ruling as a landmark decision.

The 108-page judgment by Regional Employment Judge Rohan Pirani establishes for the first time that anti-Zionist beliefs are protected in the workplace.

Rahman Lowe’s partner Zillur Rahman, who represented Miller, said in a statement: “The timing of this Judgment will be welcomed by many who at present are facing persecution in their workplaces for speaking out against the crimes of the Israeli state.”

Miller was proud to establish anti-Zionist views qualify as a protected belief under the UK Equality Act. Following the investigation, the University of Bristol stated: ‘We have a duty of care to all students and the wider University community, in addition to a need to apply our own codes of conduct consistently and with integrity. Professor Miller did not meet the standards of behaviour we expect from our staff and the University has concluded that Professor Miller’s employment should be terminated with immediate effect.

‘The University regards the principle of academic freedom as fundamental and would like to reiterate that we take any risk to stifle that freedom seriously. The investigation included an independent report from a leading King’s Counsel who considered the important issue of academic freedom of expression and found that Professor Miller’s comments did not constitute unlawful speech.

‘The University remains committed to fostering a positive working and learning environment that enriches lives and where the essential principles of academic freedom are preserved.’

Sobotoka scoops EJC award Communities join Westminster vigils

The European Jewish Congress has awarded Austrian National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka with the 2024 Golden Vision Award.

Sobotka received the accolade in recognition of his long-standing support to the Austrian Jewish community, combating antisemitism and fostering Jewish life.

EJC observed that Sobotka had shown ‘extraordinary dedication to the well-being of Austrian Jews, actively engaging in initiatives to commemorate the Holocaust, tirelessly advocating for the fight against antisemitism and promoting and protecting Jewish culture and traditions. His work has not only strengthened the bond between the Austrian government and the Jewish community but has also contributed to fostering a more diverse and welcoming society.’

Dr Ariel Muzicant, EJC President, presented the award on behalf of EJC’s affiliated Jewish communities to Sobotka in the Austrian Parliament before Jewish leaders from over 30 countries.

“Mr. Sobotka has always been on our side, especially during these difficult times for Jews all over the world,” he said. “As antisemitism rises in Europe and in Austria alike, we are proud to have Mr. Sobotka as a true friend.

“It is not just an acknowledgment of the

Republic of Austria’s critical efforts, but a symbol of the collective dedication to a society without hate and where diversity thrives. Antisemitism is not only an affront to the Jewish community but a direct threat to the very core of our democracy and values of the free world. This award reinforces our shared commitment to combating antisemitism from all sides, preserving the richness of Jewish heritage, and nurturing a democratic spirit that embraces every citizen, irrespective of their background.”

Muzicant added: “In the last 54 years since I have had the privilege of representing the Jewish people in various positions, the Jewish-Austrian relationship has resembled a roller-coaster ride. But I cannot remember any time where the situation of Austrian Jewry was as good as in the last five years. President Sobotka has greatly contributed to this development and that is why he deserves this recognition.”

The Golden Vision Award is the highest honour of the EJC. Past recipients include Pope Francis in 2020 in recognition of his message of brotherhood between Christians and Jews.

Other laureates are World Jewish Congress President Ambassador Ronald S. Lauder and Lithuanian writer Ruta Vanagaite in shedding light on the Holocaust in Lithuania.

The launch of the Board of Deputies ‘Adopt a Hostage’ campaign has been a hit.

Dozens of communities have drawn attention to the plight of those held captive

by Hamas.

Some 48 synagogues and organisations have embraced a specific hostage to ensure those taken by terrorists on October 7th are not forgotten.

Synagogues that join the scheme are encouraged to remember the hostage adopted by name in prayers, together with prayers for all hostages, to post on social media and reach out to local press regarding the hostage, and reserve a seat in shul with a photograph of the hostage.

Meanwhile, hundreds of members of the public, Jewish and non-Jewish, have joined weekly vigils outside Parliament to draw attention to the hostages in Gaza.

A number of Parliamentarians have participated. They take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays with Parliament in session.

Gary Lineker Dear Editor I am still at a complete loss to understand what is going on with Mr Lineker and why serious action has not been taken against him following his series of anti-Israel tweets.

The same Gary Lineker has now sparked even greater controversy by tweeting about the death of Palestinian children illustrated by a line on Bournemouth beach, compared to the death of Israeli children.

Sadly and inexplicably, Jewish community bodies, the BBC and OFCOM have hardly ‘stepped up to the plate’ with any vigour in condemning the Lineker anti-Israel tweets and he remains ‘in situ’ and with impunity.

In the circumstances, in addition to the recent petition calling for Lineker’s

dismissal from the BBC, I have decided to establish an action group to take appropriate legal action against Lineker and all those who aid and abet him.

The claim will, inter alia, cover incitement to racial hatred and support of a terrorist organisation.

Hopefully, the Jewish community and organisations such as the Board of Deputies will sit up and take notice and support this initiative.

This dangerous and disruptive man must be silenced once and for all.

Shamefully, the BBC (Britain’s Biased Corporation), keep defending him, keep ignoring the very real hurt these have caused to the Jewish Community and keep him on their books.

That he is so highly paid for doing his job only adds salt to the wound - it’s our license fee money, after all. The BBC and Gary Lineker are an ideal match – a Match of the Day! Of course, I fully support the initiative “Kick it Out,” regarding racism in football – what about, “Kick out Gary!”

Neither the BBC, nor Gary Lineker, are now (if they ever were), national treasures but a national disgrace. Both have crossed a Red Line in their respective fields and deserve to get the proverbial, “Red Card.”

Like many people, I no longer watch Match of the Day and do my best to watch very little of the BBC output.

In the august parade ground of Les Invalides, the heart of France’s Empire and military Glory, the President delivered one of France’s most heartfelt condemnations of anti-semitism. “We are 68 million French in mourning.” He condemned “the greatest anti-semitic massacre of this century.”

Surrounded by soldiers bearing large posters of the 42 French victims of the assault (out of 12,000 murdered by Hamas on 7 october 2023,) France’s youngest President emphasized the lives of those martyred French youth. “We think of what we were at their age, and what they can never be.” He mentioned “Ofer, Ohad, Orion” believed to be hostages still in Hamas’ hands, stating that France was working to have them freed.

The President spoke after the Kaddish, in Maurice Ravel’s setting, had captured the heart of Les Invalides, and raised its prayer to Heaven, slowly, somberly, through the voice of violin and piano.

Jewish Prayer had won over the place of the military.

Macron linked Hamas’ attack to previous ones in France, and promised to “ never yield anything to a rampant uninhibited anti-semitism.”

France’s new Prime Minister, Gabriel Nissim Attal, his predecessor Elisabeth Borne, France’s previous President François Hollande, and Marine Le Pen, head of the Opposition, all attended.

Lord Cameron flirts with disaster OPINION PIECE

Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron’s recent dalliance with the idea of UK support for recognising a Palestinian state has set off alarm bells that compel the National Jewish Assembly to confront this perilous proposition head-on.

Of paramount concern is the unconscionable validation of radical Islamic terrorism.

To recognise a Palestinian state in this climate is to bestow a cloak of legitimacy upon groups like Hamas, whose hands are stained with the blood of countless innocents. We cannot afford to turn a blind eye to the moral abyss of rewarding violence with statehood.

Furthermore, the leadership options currently on the table for a prospective Palestinian state offer no solace. Hamas, a designated terrorist organisation in multiple states including the UK, remains a malevolent force within Palestinian politics, as reflected in recent polling by the Palestinian Centre for Policy and Survey Research. Its unabashed commitment to violent Islamic extremism and its vow to

wage jihad against Israel and the Western world should send shivers down our spines. We must grapple with the ethical quandary of whether granting statehood to such a group is conscionable. Comparisons with the likes of ISIS are chillingly apt, as both share a repugnant ideology and are unapologetic perpetrators of terror.

Another pressing concern is the morass of governance plaguing Palestinian territories. While Hamas’s grip on Gaza has been severed by the brave men and women in the IDF who are fighting for Israel’s future, the Palestinian Authority-controlled areas in the West Bank continue to be marred by corruption, an ineffectual security apparatus, and leadership more interested in personal gain and paying salaries to convicted terrorists than the welfare of their people. Recognising a Palestinian state in these conditions beggars belief and raises profound doubts about its ability to offer stability, security, or even basic services to its citizens.

The matter of borders, often treated as a mere formality, is, in reality, a volatile and complex issue fraught with dire implications. To recognise a Palestinian state without clear, mutually agreed-upon borders would be an act of breath-taking

imprudence. It would inevitably lead to disputes over territory, resource allocation, and access to vital regions, potentially unravelling the fragile fabric of peace.

Determining the borders of a prospective Palestinian state necessitates acknowledging the historical and geographical intricacies of the region and meticulous consideration of the legitimate security concerns of Israelis - considering they have lived under the pall of Palestinian terrorism for decades.

Moreover, the status of various territories and areas within the region remains contentious. Judea and Samaria, for instance, hosts a complex tapestry of Israeli communities, Palestinian towns, and shared control zones as stipulated by the Oslo Accords. Jerusalem looms large. The Palestinian Authority insists on East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state, a demand that is a non-starter in the face of Jerusalem’s status as Israel’s eternal and undivided capital. We cannot afford to be ignorant of the labyrinthine geographical realities of the region and hope that a Palestinian state will magically emerge.

Regrettably, the harsh reality is that recognising a Palestinian state under the current circumstances would undoubtedly usher

in a reign of terror. Historical precedents, such as Jordan’s brutal confrontation with Palestinian insurgents during ‘Black September,’ serve as chilling reminders of the potential for violence and instability.

Egypt’s recent efforts to fortify the Rafah Crossing to curb the infiltration of Gazabased terrorists underline the genuine apprehensions surrounding the creation of a Palestinian state.

While the siren call of recognising a Palestinian state may entice some, the harsh realities on the ground necessitate an unwavering and unapologetic stance.

The potential for condoning terrorism, the quagmire of leadership, governance pitfalls, border disputes, the looming spectre of a terror state, and the peril of escalated conflict all underscore the perils of rash recognition. The United Kingdom must not falter in its resolve to stand with Israel while working towards peace, security, and stability in the region. The stakes are too high, and the consequences too dire to tread lightly on this treacherous path.

JFT collaborate on solidarity trips Last week, three prominent Jewish Futures organisations, GIFT, JRoots, and Aish, successfully concluded a series of solidarity and volunteering trips in Israel. The collaborative efforts of these organisations showcased a unique blend of expertise, with JRoots organising and facilitating the trips, GIFT promoting volunteering initiatives, and Aish Young Professionals focusing on fostering Jewish identity and connection to Israel.

The joint Aish Mission Trip Fruit picking endeavors of these organisations included diverse and essential activities such as farming, demonstrating solidarity with local communities, hosting BBQs for soldiers, distributing donated items, and visiting mourners sitting shiva. The collective impact of these initiatives emphasised the power of collaboration in making a meaningful difference.

One of the key highlights of the trip was the profound engagement with survivors and families affected by both historical and recent events. Adi Efrat, a survivor of the Kibbutz Be’eri massacre on October 7th, shared her harrowing experiences with the visiting groups.

Leading them through the Kibbutz, Adi vividly described the atrocities committed by Hamas, providing a firsthand account that left a lasting impact on all participants.

Josef shared his survival story, and Rob Airley, a 1993 graduate of Aish Fellowships, spoke about his son’s sacrifice.

Rabbi Yaakov Klein from Eilecha joined the group, offering emotional and stirring songs on his guitar.

Reflecting on the impactful experiences, a participant from the Aish Young Professionals group shared, “This trip has been incredibly meaningful, connecting us to our roots and inspiring us to make a difference. I, together with the group of people I met on this trip, wanted to make a tangible impact on those affected the most by October 7th and felt joining this mission and volunteering, helping those who really need us was the best way to do that. I am so grateful to Aish that I had this opportunity and would recommend any similar missions to anyone interested.”

But it was only in 2020 that a suitable placement became available for Zach, who has autism and is non-verbal, “in the right home, with appropriate care, staff and peer group for him”. “Despite not being able to communicate verbally, his smile tells us each day how happy, safe and supported he is,” he relayed, adding: “My whole family are grateful for the care and support Zach receives, and we feel lucky that he was able to get the placement my parents so wanted for him, in a lovely home, at the heart of his community in North London, supported by his Norwood family.”

Elsewhere, the evening featured an auction hosted by Jamie O’Hara, whilst YN Property Awards Committee Chair Ben Harshak compered an ‘In Conversation With’ Charlie Green and Olly Olsen of The Office Group, who spoke about some of the industry’s most prevailing trends.

Among the auction prizes bid for were a London Helicopter Experience for up to six passengers, a framed and signed presentation of Muhammad Ali over a fallen Sonny Liston in 1965, and exclusive studio access for two to talkSPORT’s Breakfast show or The Sports Bar show.

Introducing the appeal and the charity’s reliance on community contributions in a challenging economic landscape, Norwood’s Honorary Life President, former Chair of Trustees and Founder of Young Norwood David Ereira paid tribute to the generation of young community leaders and philanthropists who had contributed so much to Young Norwood’s development over its 30-year lifespan.

LSJS climate change report The London School of Jewish Studies published a report on climate change and Jewish law to coincide with Tu B’shvat last week.

The overview followed LSJS’ symposium ‘Climate Change and Halacha: Theory to practice’, held last November, which aimed to bring together the worlds of Torah and science.

Over 40 orthodox rabbinical leaders and educators sought a change of approach in UK mainstream orthodoxy with climate change framed in the language of halacha.

The symposium was addressed by Rabbi Jeremy Wieder, prominent Rosh Yeshiva at Yeshiva University and Dr Emily Farnworth from Cambridge University, an expert on climate change and public policy.

After in-depth sessions on the perspectives of Torah and science, there were discussions on how to tackle climate change in communities.

Rabbi Wieder showed how halacha conveys a sense of obligation towards tackling climate change. According to Rabbi Wieder, when it comes to

environmentalism, people talk about the three ‘R’s: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

In the activist world, ‘Reduce’ is spoken about the least as it is the least appealing.

Ironically as religious Jews, ‘Reduce’ is the first area we should look at, since it is the epitome of kedusha, which is about moving from a physically-orientated existence to a spiritually-orientated one.

Joanne Greenaway, LSJS Executive Director: “We offer people the opportunity to read about how we combined the worlds of Torah and science to learn about climate change and examine the response of Jewish law. We hope this will spark meaningful learning and practical action.”

The symposium was spearheaded by Rafi Addlestone, graduate of LSJS’s oneyear Rabbi Sacks Learning Fellowship course for young professionals and was a partnership between LSJS, the United Synagogue’s Dorot programme, and Senior Rabbi’s Office of the S&P Sephardi Community.

Manchester Hillel House, an independant charity providing housing for Jewish students attending all Manchester and surrounding universities, presented an evening in the “Pizza with Parsha” series on Sunday 4th February. These events focus on a combination of social and educational interaction for the residents of Hillel, together with other members of the Jewish Society.

interactive talk by the Hillel Chairman, Rabbi Dr Neil Joseph entitled “Splitting the Sea with Fluid Dynamics - Modern Science Meets Torah”. He explained the supernatural elements involved in the splitting of the Red Sea after the Children of Israel left Egypt, but combined this with modern scientific concepts.

These included Storm Surge, whereby a persistent wind can displace very large masses of water, and the phenomenon of the movements of tectonic plates along the Jordan Rift Valley that extends all the way to the Red Sea. In this latter and very rare example, an underwater land mass can rise to the surface of the sea, allowing temporary passage along a rock hard pathway, only to be followed by a tsunami-like reaction as the water returns to its former state.

In these ‘natural’ scenarios, the miracle of the splitting of the sea with the drowning of the Egyptian army was a matter of timing, allowing safe passage only to the Children of Israel.

A lively discussion ensued with vocal contributions from the students, and all agreed that the evening was a huge success.

NJA demand BBC to take serious action The National Jewish Assembly (NJA) condemns the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in the harshest terms for its shocking indifference and tolerance towards blatant antisemitism within its own ranks. The NJA is appalled by the BBC’s egregious failure to promptly address the vile antisemitic posts made by one of its senior employees and demands immediate and decisive action.

The recent revelation, exposed by UK Lawyers for Israel (UKLFI), lays bare the disturbing reality of Dawn Queva, a senior scheduling co-coordinator and playout planner at BBC Three, openly espousing extreme antisemitism on social media platforms.

Dawn Queva, as per her LinkedIn profile, held her BBC position since January 2023, showcasing a career that spanned across influential networks like A+E Networks, UKTV, and Walt Disney.

However, her professional achievements are overshadowed by her association with a Facebook page that serves as a breeding ground for venomous antisemitic rhetoric.

The Facebook page, operating under the pseudonym Dawn Las Quevas-Allen, shamelessly propagated classical

antisemitic tropes, labeling Jews as “Nazi apartheid parasites,” “thieves,” and “satanists.” It further indulged in the baseless denial of historical connections between Ashkenazi Jews and the land of Israel while fueling absurd conspiracy theories of global Jewish domination. The BBC’s reluctance to unequivocally condemn such hate speech not only tarnishes its reputation but raises alarming questions about its commitment to eradicating antisemitism.

NJA Managing Director Steve Winston commented, “The BBC’s spineless response to this blatant display of antisemitism is an affront to humanity. The BBC has, again, failed in its moral duty to uphold decency and integrity.”

The NJA demands the BBC take immediate and sweeping action to rectify this appalling lapse in judgement. The NJA insists on a thorough internal investigation to identify and root out all instances of antisemitism within the organisation, and correct its editorial bias against Jews and Israel.

The NJA will continue to monitor this situation closely and hold the BBC accountable for past, present, and emergent antisemitism within its ranks.

NJA dismayed over judgement enshrining Anti-Zionism as a protected belief The National Jewish Assembly (NJA) voices profound concern and staunch disagreement with the recent judgement that has enshrined anti-Zionism as a protected belief in the workplace. The Bristol Employment Tribunal has ruled that academic David Miller was discriminated against at Bristol University due to his anti-Zionist views, a decision that has far-reaching consequences for the fight against antisemitism.

The crux of the NJA’s concern lies in the judgement’s assertion that anti-Zionism qualifies as a philosophical belief and a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010. The NJA firmly believes that this equation is deeply flawed.

Anti-Zionism serves as a thinly veiled form of antisemitism, rooted in the denial of the Jewish people’s right to self-determination. To equate it with protected beliefs not only fails to protect genuine philosophical beliefs but also threatens to legitimize hatred.

This judgement inadvertently weakens the ongoing battle against antisemitism by blurring the lines between legitimate criticism and hate-driven ideologies. By recognizing anti-Zionism as a protected

belief, it sends a dangerous message that may embolden antisemitic individuals and groups who exploit anti-Zionist rhetoric to target Jewish communities.

The NJA finds it extremely telling that many pro-Palestine protesters have taken to social media to voice their support for Miller and interpret the verdict as a validation of the decades-old trope that “Zionism is racism,” as well as their own hate-filled, antisemitic, and pro-Hamas sympathies.

Furthermore, the NJA remains deeply concerned about Professor David Miller’s continued promotion of extremist ideologies, exemplified by his recent sharing of videos on social media depicting Hamas in a positive light. Hamas is a recognised terrorist organisation responsible for countless acts of violence, including its massacre of Israelis on October 7. To portray such an organisation positively is not only misleading but also highly offensive.

The NJA calls upon academic institutions and lawmakers to critically evaluate the implications of this judgement on their campuses and within society at large.

Two hundred years of Hasmonean Girls - Master the Chumash survival In an emotional meeting, 100-year-old Kindertransportee Walter Bingham met 100-year-old Auschwitz survivor Lily Ebert at her London home. Bingham was visiting from Israel to speak at a variety of events for March of the Living UK that included two fundraising dinners and the film premiere: ‘MOTL - Journey of Hope: Retracing the Kindertransport after 85 Years’. This is the remarkable story of 3 Kindertransport survivors, Walter Bingham (100), Paul Alexander (85), and George Shefi (92), who retraced their journey last October to mark 85 years since they courageously fled Germany - without their parents - following Kristallnacht.

Walter, who lives in Jerusalem, is an enduring symbol of resilience.

He says: “The past is gone. We mustn’t dwell on it. But if you don’t know the past you can’t make the future any better.

I often get asked what the difference is between what happened then and today’s situation in Israel. There are several differences but for me the most important difference is that the Nazis were hiding what they were doing, they did it all in secret and nobody knew. Today’s terrorists are very proud of what they are

doing, and they are showing it. That is a remarkable difference. What [can] we do against it? We can educate, speak to people, schools. Talking to people about what it means and the consequences of their actions and hope that they will learn from it.”

Lily Ebert MBE said: “Walter and I are both centenarian Holocaust survivors.

We are members of a community that we did not want to be a part of or choose to be a part of - the Holocaust survivor community. We have to live, every day, with the pain of what we went through.

We share that understanding, and it is for that reason that meeting the inspirational Walter was so special.”

Scott Saunders, Founder of March of the Living UK, said: “At the essence of the March of the Living mission is the sentiment that, when you hear a witness, you become a witness. We were privileged to spend time in the company of two of our most influential survivors and witnesses – Lily Ebert MBE and Walter Bingham.

Lily and Walter not only bring together two hundred years of life but decades of Holocaust education that has ensured future generations will be witnesses to the atrocities of the Holocaust too.”

Rebbetzin Zimmerman was the guest of honour at the Hasmonean Girls School assembly on Friday 26th January for a special prize giving. Twelve girls were awarded certificates and a unique prize for their learning in the Master the Chumash programme. This is an initiative in the Hasmonean Midrasha (Sixth form Jewish Studies programme) whereby the girls learn the entire parsha with Rashi each week. The girls need to be highly motivated in order to complete the weekly learning in the Hasmonean Girls Early Morning Beis Hamedrash before school begins, or in their own time.

The younger years applauded keenly as eleven girls received their prizes for finishing Sefer Bereishis, and gave a standing ovation to Alegria Benaim who very impressively completed the entire Chumash with Rashi. Bracha Richards who is currently in Bnos Avigail seminary also completed the whole Chumash before leaving Hasmonean.

Rebbetzen Zimmerman spoke about the life of Rashi and the centrality of his commentary on the Torah. She pointed out that a primary school child and adult can both learn Rashi’s commentary on Chumash whilst accessing an entirely different level of depth. The entire school

was left uplifted by Rebbetzen Zimmerman’s visit together with the achievement of the sixth form girls.

Rabbi Dov Birnbaum, Head of Midrasha commented “it was a privilege to host Rebbetzin Zimmerman at Hasmonean and gave us all tremendous chizzuk. I am so proud of our students who have dedicated a huge amount of their spare time and effort to learn Chumash with Rashi”

Rabbi Golker, Hasmonean’s Menahel, added: “The Master the Chumash programme is fabulous. Rabbi Birnbaum has given students aspirations not just for using their free time well, but for reaching greater heights in Torah learning.

A highlight of the evening was the engaging Q&A session, providing attendees with the opportunity to delve deeper into topics related to women’s health, exchange ideas, and seek expert advice.

Yeshiva University, the flagship Jewish university, is bringing Torah to passengers of EL AL, the Israeli National Airline.

Recently launched in early 2024, travelers currently have the opportunity to listen to audio recordings of YUTorah, which debuted as an online platform of Torah study more than 20 years ago.

Since the war began on October 7, EL AL has transported travelers to and from Israel flying with a great sense of purpose and mission - including IDF reservists flying home to active duty – YUTorah’s high-level content will enrich the travel experience for EL AL’s passengers.

EL AL travelers now have inflight access to shiurim (classes) from YU’s preeminent Torah personalities, Rebbeim, scholars and educators. The shiurim will be updated every four to six weeks, with content relevant to the time of year and the upcoming Jewish holidays.

The broadcasts will include discussions on Halacha (Jewish law), Jewish history, Tefillah (Jewish prayer), dating and marriage, parenting and Parsha (weekly Torah portion); and feature a wide range

Why do Jews Really Celebrate Passover?

To eat.

Just joking, there is more to Passover than chugging four cups of wine and eating dry matzah for eight days. In simple terms, we celebrate Passover because we were freed from being slaves in Egypt for 210 years. 210 years of absolute hell and exile. As we all know, Moshe was born during the decree to kill all Jewish born boys. Moshe’s mother was forced to put him in a basket in the river hoping he would stay alive. He was saved by Pharoah’s daughter as she heard crying coming from the river outsider the palace. He was then brought into Pharaoh’s palace and raised by Pharoah’s daughter. Moshe grew up, he got in a deadly fight with an Egyptian causing him to run away to Ethiopia. After being king in Ethiopia for 40 years and marrying his wife in Midyan.

Hashem revealed to Moshe that he was going to be the leader of the Jewish people and free them from Egypt. Confused and scared, Moshe asked how someone like him, with a lisp, can be the ultimate leader. Hashem assured Moshe that he is the right one and that He will perform marvelous miracles and wonders.

Moshe entered Egypt asking Pharoah to free the Jews from slavery. Pharoah answered that he will not let the Jews go because he needs them as slaves. Moshe announced that Hashem will hit the

Egyptians with a plague turning all their waters into blood. With each plague came three weeks of warning. After the plague of blood, Moshe appeared to Pharaoh again, pleading with him to let the Jews go. As we all know, Pharoah disagreed and was hit with the plague of frogs. After the first set of five plagues, Moshe visited Pharaoh again with the same question, receiving the same answer.

So, the next five plagues occurred, making the Egyptians suffer financially and physically.

Death of the firstborns, the final and most devastating plague, was to happen.

To protect the Jewish firstborns, Jews were told to kill a sheep and mark their doorposts with the blood, so the Angel of Death knows which home to pass over.

All the Egyptian firstborns died, including Pharaoh’s son. Pharaoh could not take it anymore and rushed out of his house at midnight searching for Moshe. He pleaded to Moshe to leave Egypt right now with all the Jews. Moshe adamantly

refused and said all the Jews will leave in the middle of the day so that everyone can see Hashem’s miracles.

This is the exact reason why we celebrate Passover; it wasn’t just that we were freed from slavery, it was because Hashem saved us in four different ways corresponding to the four cups of wine/ grape juice we drink for both seders.

Hashem brought us out, saved us, and redeemed us, and took us out. The fifth and final form of deliverance corresponds to the fifth cup that will be revealed by the final redemption. We are remembering what happened in the past for Jews and celebrating what will occur in the future.

‘Don’t Get in a Shvitz!’ for Broughton Jewish Boys Laniado Melava Malka The ladies of London were full of laughter and smiles on Sunday 21st January thanks to the show ‘Don’t Get In A Shvtiz!’ in aid of Laniado UK. Performed at Hasmonean Girl’s School by a cast from Edgware and beyond, over 600 women and girls came to see the show across two performances, raising £5000 for the Netanya hospital.

The comedy play was written and directed by renowned cartoonist and writer Keren Keet, and is her third production in collaboration with Laniado, following the previous successful productions ‘Spinach’ (2014) and ‘Time to L.A.U.G.H’ (2020).

‘Don’t Get In a Shvitz!’ tells the story of Rochel’s quest to find her long-lost sister in time for her 40th wedding

anniversary party. Featuring eccentric children and grandchildren, a sinister detective, tap-dancing henchmen, and even a Spanish housekeeper desperate to feed her Jewish visitors some prawn paella, the play kept the laughs coming.

‘Enormously entertaining and incredibly high quality,’ commented one ecstatic audience member. Another enthusiastically wrote, ‘I knew it would be good but I didn’t imagine it would be this great.

Every scene was brilliant, witty, interesting and fast paced, entertaining and showcasing the most amazing acting.’

The cast have been overwhelmed with the amazing response, and are filled with gratitude to have been part of this project, ‘Words are not enough to thank you for including me in this fabulous production,’ wrote Simcha Vegoda, who played the main character.

The funds raised will be donated to the Paediatric Haematology department of the hospital.

And for those who missed it, there will be screenings of the video so more people can enjoy the laughter, and continue to raise further funds for Laniado.

Community #GoPurple for Jewish Care Members of the community of all ages have been participating in fun, purple-themed activities for the week of #GoPurple, raising awareness for Jewish Care from 5-11th February.

British TV personality, Rob Rinder sent a message of support, saying, “I’m delighted to support Go Purple week, care is at the heart of all Jewish Care does and in these times especially, I’m inspired by seeing the way the carers of all faiths, no faiths, and all nationalities, give love every day to older people from our community.”

Across the entire week, Jewish Care invited supporters to dress head to toe in purple, ice a cake purple, paint their nails purple, share a purple-themed picture on social media, or even dye their hair for the occasion, all while raising awareness for Jewish Care and sending messages of support.

Children from pre-schools and students from JCOSS, as well as local shops went purple for Jewish Care.

Nagila Pre-School in Edgware, Bushey Gan Nursery & Pre-School and Alonim PreSchool Nursery participated in purple-themed activities and JCOSS students enjoyed

lively lilac activities with lavender and baked purple cupcakes with members of Jewish Care’s Sam Beckman Centre for people living with dementia.

Yeladenu Pre-School enjoyed a purple themed, intergenerational Debutots session with Jewish Care’s Kun Mor and George Kiss care home residents.

Children from pre-schools created beautiful, hand crafted thoughtful, purple greeting cards for care home residents at Jewish Care’s Betty and Asher Loftus Centre to enjoy.

Chava Heart, Jewish Care’s mascot, made a special appearance at Alonim Pre-School Nursery to meet the children.

Head teacher, Patsy Maltz, said, “Alonim are so proud to support Jewish Care in their Go Purple awareness week. The children had fun crafting their own purple cards for Jewish Care residents and they enjoyed a special visit from their mascot, Chava Heart!”

Chava Heart also headed over to Kosher Kingdom to hand out purple cookies to shoppers and the wider community, whilst Daniel’s Bakery hosted a Go Purple themed stall in support of Jewish Care and to raise awareness.

ASK THE RABBI Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com CHANGE OF FOCUS Dear Rabbi It takes immense courage to write to you, as the nature of my letter is very personal. Yet, I am hoping that my bravery will reward me with a response from you that offers solace, and that it might also bring validation to others suffering silently too. I apologise in advance if the lengthy details following seem excessive, however I do need to convey the weight of the problem.

I am an older single who has been navigating the painful journey of shidduchim (matchmaking) since coming out of Seminary in my latter teens. Over the course of 2 decades, there has been no stone unturned by myself, by my parents and by many caring friends and family members, all lovingly and compassionately rooting for me. There is nothing, and I mean nothing, that I (we) have not done to elicit Heavenly mercy, for my personal salvation.

This is where I intend to elaborate (at the risk of losing the readers patience!)

Over the course of these many years that I have dated unsuccessfully, I have constantly prayed for help, beseeched, screamed, sobbed, pleaded with G-d;

Given daily charity to organisations that help brides (as advised), paid many righteous rabbis in Israel to pray for me, visited numerous holy gravesites, donated ample tzedakah to many different charities; Tried every omen under the sun, from cleaning a mikvah to paying a deposit to a music band in anticipation of a wedding, reciting Song of Songs for 40 days, joining numerous psalms groups, taking on good resolutions; committing to regular therapy, working with a dating coach, moving to another country to widen my horizons, expanding my personal search beyond my initial ‘wish list’, revisiting previously tried shidduchim, seeking out anyone I might have hurt; strengthening my trust and faith in G-d as well.

You name it, I’ve done it! My efforts have covered the entire terrain of possibility from internal psychological work to spiritual growth and pragmatic efforts.

And over 20 years later, nothing has changed. Only, everything has changed!

But not in my favour.

My question is this: There is only one G-d.

No other power in the universe! But the One and only address for salvation, has not and will not help me! Yes, there is a bigger picture I know, however we live in a world of action, where results matter,

where solutions are sought, where outcome is relevant; we are not living in a spiritual realm!

What can a person do when they have exhausted every possible method of eliciting favour in the eyes of the Almighty, and nothing changes year after year, decade after decade? The soul tires for many, especially one whose prayers and efforts do not bear fruit.

What comfort is there in this world, and how can a person believe in the power of prayer and good deeds when life has told a very different story? I so want to believe that these things can change the course of a person’s life that they surely can bring salvation, but my belief is severely waning.

Racheli Dear Racheli Your question is filled with much anguish and pain and I’m sorry you’re feeling that and going through that.

However, I need to take issue with the underlying premise of your question – namely that the lack of “Divine response” is causing your faith to waver. Therein lies your paradox. You’re praying to G-d and undertaking many good deeds because you believe in Him. But if you believe in Him then by definition you believe that He is every bit aware of your plight and that there are reasons for everything as they transpire.

To put it differently, if you think that G-d doesn’t know exactly what’s going on in your life, then frankly that’s not a G-d worth believing in. If you believe He does know what’s going on and is every bit involved in every dimension of your life, then you also know that some things are beyond our comprehension. To be sure, G-d wants us to get married and have a family, “be fruitful and multiply.” So there is always someone there for everyone and we should never give up the search. But there is something lacking in the underlying faith when things don’t go to your plan and you start to question G-d’s plan.

To use a Talmudic analogy, “even a thief prays before he breaks into a home.” Sometimes a thief prays to G-d that he is successful in his endeavour, that he shouldn’t get caught and he even

promises 20 percent to charity if successful. And he means it! The only problem is, the premise is flawed. You can’t claim to believe wholeheartedly in G-d if you are going to do something that you know runs counter to the will of G-d.

Similarly, we can’t claim to wholeheartedly believe in G-d but only up to a point.

If I don’t get my intended result, then I am going to start harbouring doubts.

Moreover, reading between the lines, you’re doing many things in the hope of eliciting the response you want. A common misconception is that when we pray and we do good deeds, we can change G-d’s mind. Frankly, that’s bribery. What kind of G-d accepts bribery?

Who would want to believe in that? “I, G-d do not change,” says the verse. You cannot ever hope to change G-d’s mind.

When our matriarchs went years without children and prayed incessantly, it’s not that through their prayer they changed G-d’s mind. It’s that their very prayers were embedded into the Divine plan.

G-d determined that they would not have children. G-d also determined that if they prayed hard then they would have children. That’s where the balance of free choice and predetermination come into play. The whole underlying purpose of prayer and good deeds is not to change G-d’s mind, rather these actions having a transformative effect on our own lives.

We change. And when we do, we elicit an altogether different response from above.

Bottom line: You need to recalibrate your thinking and approach. And please G-d, soon enough you’ll be sending me an invitation – and I really expect one.

Puncturing Jewish Universalism

Jewish identity delicately balances two opposing attitudes toward the non-Jewish world. We are a particularistic race, asserting an exclusive covenant with Hashem, which awards us His land of Israel. Distinctive dietary and marital customs, along with a rigid system of commandments and prohibitions, preserve our cultural insularity. Jewish day-to-day experience is fundamentally unlike the daily routine of non-Jews. We are different and we are chosen.

However, we were not chosen for privilege or for luxury, but for responsibility and mission. We are wardens of religious conscience, tasked with calling humanity to higher ground. To many, the phrase “chosen people” sounds bigoted and racist and, for centuries, our enemies invoked this term, to accuse us of arrogance and condescension. Our haters didn’t realize that our chosenness doesn’t entitle us but obligates us.

The Talmud considers a hypothetical scenario whereby a divine commandment only applies to a Gentile, but not to a Jew. Prior to Sinai, G-d had delivered numerous commandments to a non-Jewish world, some of which weren’t reissued at Sinai. Perhaps these pre-Sinai injunctions apply only to Gentiles.

The Talmud patently rejects this notion, as it is inconceivable for Jews to have fewer commandments than Gentiles. As we are intended to showcase the nobility of a godlike life, we possess more commandments than Gentiles, not fewer. We model 613 so that humanity, one day, appreciates the value of 7 [Noachide laws]. Given this historical assignment, it is unimaginable that Sinai reduced our level of obligation. We aren’t chosen for privilege or pleasure but for greater devotion and commitment. A nation of priests, steadfastly guarding human conscience.

Ideally, Judaism blends nationalistic and universalistic experience. While our daily routines are particularistic, our mission is global. Our rituals customs, and lifestyles are distinctive, and culturally, we are inward-looking. If we neglect our religious commitments and corrupt our moral integrity, we are no longer priestly, and our message expires. However, if we ignore our duty to inspire humanity, we betray the very reason for which we were chosen. Jews are both internalist and externalist, insular and outward.

DARK DAYS FOR UNIVERSALISM The past few months have severely

challenged our ability to merge these two cardinal values. It is not an easy time to be a Jewish universalist. On Oct 7th we were brutally attacked by barbaric murderers who, astonishingly, received political support from much of the Arab world. Antisemites across the globe came out of the woodwork, supporting the rape, murder, and mutilation of Jews. We received a rude awakening that deep-seated animosity toward our people still lingers under the surface of a shiny and shimmering modern word. The monstrosity of antisemitism still lives.

More recently, our people and our nation were publicly tried for genocidal crimes in a kangaroo court. It is particularly absurd and painful that Jews are now being falsely accused of the very crime which we faced only a generation ago. We have survived genocidal attacks for centuries and currently, are being wrongly charged for the crimes which were ceaselessly perpetrated against us.

History is ironic and painful, especially as it relates to our people.

The UN, supposedly a beacon of international cooperation, was exposed as an accomplice to murder. Ever since its inception, the UN has been hijacked by anti-Israel blocs weaponizing it to concoct nonstop prejudiced resolutions against our people. We have now discovered that UNRWA, a UN agency intended to deliver humanitarian aid, has been, in fact, an essential cog of the Hamas murder machine. Always a chamber of hate toward Israel, the UN now has its hands stained with Jewish blood.

The past few months have provided a harsh reality check, reminding us that much of the modern world is still unwilling to accept us and our rights to Israel.

In some ways, we have returned to the days of our ancestor Avraham who was dubbed “ivri” because he stood alone on one side, opposing an entire pagan world which discredited his religious beliefs.

Seventy-five years into our modern state we too, stand alone, defiantly upholding our moral cause and our historical license to our homeland.

THE AFTERSHOCKS This eruption of hatred and opposition has shocked many Jews of strong universalist orientation. Many, particularly those who reside outside of Israel, assumed that Jews had been warmly accepted into a modern and enlightened world of racial and religious equality.

They assumed that our historical Jewish mission had now transformed into a shared universal agenda of promoting

equality, education, and peace. Jewish mission had now been conflated with a broader modern movement in which Jew and Gentile were equal partners. We could trust our new Gentile partners in this great mission of tikun ha’olam to protect Jews against hate and violence.

The hatred and antagonism of the past few months has revealed that Jews are not always seen as equal partners crusading for common values. So many of the communities whose legitimate rights Jews valiantly defended, such as African Americans and LGBTQ, have viciously turned their backs on us while supporting our murderous enemies. Many “universalist” Jews have been shocked by the past few months. Anytime a conception crumbles an identity crisis follows.

More particularistic Jews haven’t suffered the same crisis of identity since they never envisioned the same degree of partnership with the non-Jewish world.

Though particularistic Jews feel comfortable participating in universalist agendas alongside non-Jews, this partnership with doesn’t define their identity. Comfortable living among Gentiles, these Jews never viewed tikun ha’olam partnership with Gentles as a core value. For them, Oct 7. and the outburst of antisemitism didn’t shatter their preconceived notions of society.

PRESERVING OUR UNIVERSALIST VOICE Though the war has severely challenged our universalism, we cannot allow it to make us too insular or to promote bigotry or racism. The war in Gaza and our battle with antisemitism can easily plunge us into ugly misanthropic hatred of “others’. In the face of brutality and rabid hatred it is easy to paint the entire world as our enemies. A battle of this magnitude can easily cause us to dig in our heels, stand alone and dismiss humanity at large. It is specifically during this dark period of hatred and violence that we must reaffirm Jewish universalism.

Though it is true that we face sweeping global antisemitism, we also enjoy significant backing from a broad collation of

countries who support our just and moral battle for Jewish survival. It is extremely symbolic that Germany has become a stalwart supporter of the Jewish state.

Decades after threatening Jewish survival they are among the strongest to defend it.

We are not alone, and we should delude ourselves into believing that we have completely returned to the condition of Avraham ha’ivri. History has moved on since then.

Moreover, regardless of international support, we can never allow antisemitism to blur our universalist vision. Our messianic narrative doesn’t envision the apocalyptic elimination of all humanity with only Jews surviving. In our utopia, only the wicked are removed from G-d’s Earth, but most civilized and upright human beings enjoy prosperity, even without converting to Judaism. We are the only religion which doesn’t believe in a Messianic conversion of all humanity to our own religion. We yearn for a world in which every being created in G-d’s image lives in peace and welfare, embracing G-d and acknowledging Jews as His moral and religious representatives.

Don’t let the haters turn us into haters.

It is bad enough that they murdered our people. Do not allow them to murder Jewish universalist identity as well.

Na’aseh VeNishma formula how to approach Torah. Yes, we are obliged to search. Yes, we are obliged to strive for truth. However, if we do not find the answers we are looking for we must conclude that it is due to our human limitations, and not due to a lack of truth in the Torah.

I think this message can also be derived from a prayer we say at the end of Shacharit. The prayer begins with the phrase, “Ein Kailokeinu, there is no other like our G-d.” In the next sentence we ask, “Mi Kailokeinu, who is like our G-d?”

Surely one would expect the prayer to firstly pose the question and then supply the answer? I think this prayer is a clear reflection of the Rambam quoted above.

You may ask as many questions as you like. In fact, you should ask as many questions as you like. However, the prerequisite to those questions is that you fully understand there is indeed no other like our G-d. That is the essence of our faith. We continue to believe even when we don’t understand.

I feel that the truest understanding of “Na’aseh VeNishma” can be derived from the Rambam in Hilchot Me’ilah (8:8): “Each person should study the laws of the Torah, and endeavour to understand them in relation to their intellectual capabilities. Yet if we find that we cannot understand, this should not lead us to ridicule. We should not think that Torah study is similar to regular academics. (If we do not comprehend human formulae it is quite possible that they are incorrect; that which is proven by one man can be disproved by another. However, this is not so with the works of Hashem. It is not just possible, but quite likely, that there will be times when we simply cannot fathom the meaning behind a given principle.

However, we must remind ourselves that we are dealing with the words of Hashem, and we are therefore limited in our abilities to fully comprehend them.)”

Rambam is giving us a very clear

Mishpatim

1st Aliya (Kohen) – Shemot 21:1-19

The sidra contains many mitzvot, of which a selection has been included here. It starts with the laws of a Jewish servant. He is to work for six years, after which he can go free. Alternatively, he can decide to stay on as a servant forever.

2nd Aliya (Levi) – 21:20-22:3

The penalties for physically injuring others are listed. An ox that gores a person to death is stoned. One may not dig pits in the public domain. Stealing an animal and then selling or slaughtering it incurs an extra penalty.

Point to Consider: Why is there no death penalty for a person who kills a thief in self- defence? (see Rashi to 22:1)

This prayer is a statement of our faith. It therefore comes as no surprise to reveal that the first letters of the first three verses form the word “Amen.” The prayer is the absolute definition of our relationship with Hashem.

“Na’aseh VeNishma” is the practical application of the above theory. Am Yisrael at Har Sinai accepted to first do, then study. We are committed to do whatever Hashem requires of us. We are also committed to studying and understanding His ways. However, if there is ever any conflict between the two; if ever our limited understanding conflicts with what Hashem requires, we will do, even when human logic demands the opposite approach. We will always listen to Torah.

Towards the end of Sefer Vayikra (Parashat Behar), we are introduced to the detailed laws of the Sabbatical year – Shemitta. Many commentators ask why the Torah specifically juxtaposes Mount Sinai to the commandments involving Shemitta at the end of Vayikra, after many

“These are the ordinancׁ ‫ִּמ‬ ִ ‫ְׁש ּ​ָּפ‬ ּ ‫ַה‬‎ ַ ) that you es ( ‫ִטים‬ shall set before them.”

(Exodus 24:3)

3rd Aliya (Shlishi) – 22:4-26

The laws governing guardians and borrowers of objects are listed – the level of responsibility for losing or damaging the object varies according to the nature of the contract. Special emphasis is placed on not mistreating a widow or an orphan.

It is forbidden to take interest when lending money to the poor.

4th Aliya (Revi’i) – 22:26-23:5

The mitzvah of pidyon haben (redemption of the first born) is repeated. It is forbidden to eat an animal which died without shechita (kosher slaughter). One must not favour the destitute in court. A stray ox or donkey should be returned to its owner.

5th Aliya (Chamishi) – 23:6-19

A judge has to avoid showing favour or taking bribes. For six years the land is worked; in the seventh year (shemittah) it is prohibited to work the land. The three pilgrim festivals – Pesach, Shavuot and Succot – are listed. There is a mitzvah to bring one’s first fruits (bikurim) to the Temple. It is prohibited to cook meat and milk together.

6th Aliya (Shishi) – 23:20-25

G-d says that He will send an angel to guide the nation in their conquest of the Land, helping them to destroy the host nations. They are warned not to emulate the idolatrous ways of those nations.

7th Aliya (Shevi’i) – 23:26-24:18

The narrative now switches back to three days before the giving of the Torah (Rashi). Moshe builds 12 altars at the

other mitzvot have already been explained. As Rashi himself asks, “What is the particular relevance of Shemitta to Har Sinai. Were not all mitzvot given at Mount Sinai?” (Vayikra 25:1).

Having understood “Na’aseh VeNishma” the answer is obvious. The Sabbatical year is a year that demands absolute faith, not in theory but in practice. It is a year when we abandon our agricultural and material worth, and rely solely on G-d. Indeed, there is no greater application of “Na’aseh VeNishma” than the Sabbatical year. The mitzvah of Shemitta is the ultimate enactment of the theoretical ideal, hence the Torah directly associates it with Matan Torah.

foot of Mount Sinai, one for each tribe, on which offerings are brought. Moshe sprinkles the blood of the offerings on the people, who famously proclaim “we will do and we will listen” (na’aseh ve’nishma). Moshe, Aharon, Nadav, Avihu and 70 elders see a very pure ‘vision’ of G-d.

Moshe remains on Mount Sinai for 40 days and 40 nights.

Maftir (Bamidbar 28:9-15)

The reading for Shabbat Rosh Chodesh is taken from parashat Pinchas and details the additional Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh offerings in the Temple.

Haftarah

The special haftarah for Shabbat Rosh Chodesh is the last chapter of the Book of Yeshaya (Isaiah). The world is G-d’s “throne and footstool”. Trying to appease G-d with insincere offerings will be punished, yet one who is truly “zealous regarding G-d’s word” will be rewarded.

Those who love and are loyal to Jerusalem will enjoy the messianic future, in which they will rejoice in the rebuilt city.

Deeper Into the Journey

In our previous article, we began exploring the deep and inspiring ideas relating the importance of the Jewish People’s journey through the Midbar. After all, the Torah doesn’t waste a single word; every word has infinite meaning. Thus, if the Torah went out of its way to mention every single place that Klal Yisrael encamped along their long journey through the Midbar, there must be a fundamental message that the Torah is trying to teach us. We began our discussion by emphasizing the importance of each step in any journey. Every single step creates ripples throughout every aspect of our lives; every thought, word, action, and decision have infinite, cosmic reverberations and repercussions. We will now take our discussion to the next level, starting with developing an understanding of the fundamental purpose and importance of a goal.

THE PURPOSE OF THE GOAL In essence, the goal is necessary, but its importance lies only in how it allows you to journey toward greatness. Every goal is only temporary, for whenever you accomplish it, you will almost immediately create a new one. There are even times when we realize that our goal was not even possible or appropriate to begin with, but it still helped us progress in the right direction. The greatest joy does not come from arriving at our goals but from the journey itself — the striving itself, the process of progress, and the continued elevation of our existential self.

The Ramban quotes the claims of the fools who challenge the worth of pursuing truth. After all, if we will never reach absolute truth, as it transcends our limited minds, what then is the point in pursuing wisdom? Better not to journey at all. The Ramban responds with a profound insight: The goal is not to reach absolute truth, as this is impossible. The goal is to endlessly strive along the winding path toward truth, getting ever closer, even if the ultimate endpoint remains elusive. Every single step we take is progress, and this is the goal of life — an endless journey, but one in which we enjoy every single stage of growth and evolution. (In a deeper sense, many understand Olam Haba as another stage of growth and self-expansion. We will never be “finished” with our purpose of existing. There are simply different stages of this process, but at our very core, we will journey forever.) This provides an additional explanation for why the Torah describes Klal Yisrael’s journey in such detail; the journey itself is infinitely important.

This is why all the encampments are listed in the Torah. The Jewish People were on a spiritual journey, and every

step along the way was essential to that journey. It wasn’t only about arriving at Eretz Yisrael; it was about growing through every step of the journey, every step of the process.

THE PERSONAL MEGILLA A worthwhile journey often includes a long winding path, twisting and turning in all directions, leading you on a seemingly endless quest. Then, at the very last moment, there can be a sudden revelation that retroactively changes your perspective on the entire journey! Like a twist ending in a great story, the last turn can change the way you perceive the entire quest. This is the nature of the final geulah (redemption). When Mashiach comes, we will suddenly see how all of history was leading us toward our ultimate destination. This is why the end of days is compared to laughter. One laughs when there is a sudden change, and the destination one thought they were heading toward suddenly shifts into something completely unexpected.

(Yitzchak’s name means “laughter,” and he is associated with Mashiach. His birth should have been an impossibility, as his mother, Sarah Imeinu, was barren.

When Avraham and Sarah heard the news of Yitzchak’s future birth, they both laughed, as this news was the complete opposite of their natural expectations.

The story of Yosef and the brothers is another example of this spiritual concept.

Yosef puts the brothers through trials and tribulations, causing the brothers tremendous hardship and confusion.

Yosef’s sudden revelation of “Ani Yosef, ha’od avi chai — I am Yosef, is my father still alive?” creates a sudden retroactive revelation, a twist that creates a subjective reframing of the entire story in the eyes of the brothers.)

The same is true in our own lives.

Sometimes, only by looking back and putting all the scattered pieces together can we finally see the beauty and hashgachah in events that occurred throughout our lives. Any individual moment of your life might may seem meaningless, but held in context of your entire life, this moment suddenly shines with infinite brilliance; it’s now seen as fundamental and deeply meaningful. As we have mentioned before, this is why the baalei machshavah suggest writing your own personal “megillah,” keeping an account of events, experiences, and choices that occur throughout your life. Megillas Esther contains no open miracle, but when you put all the pieces of the puzzle together, and read them in order, you clearly see the yad Hashem (hand of G-d), how all the seemingly random events fit together so perfectly to create the hidden miracle of Purim. The word “megillah” (scroll) shares the same root as the words le’galgel (to roll) and me’galeh (to reveal).

When we roll through the scroll of the megillah, we reveal the presence and hashgachah of Hashem.

The same is true for our own personal story. Each individual event or experience may seem insignificant and happenstance, but if we put all the pieces together, connecting the dots between the seemingly random events, we begin to see the magic manifest in our own personal megillah. We can suddenly see the turning points in our lives; we retroactively perceive the life-changing decisions and events that until now seemed meaningless and random. Whether it was choosing a specific school, meeting a friend or spouse at a specific time, or visiting a certain place when we did, our past becomes a masterpiece, ready for us to admire and appreciate. On a larger scale, only by seeing all the various stages and details of Klal Yisrael’s journey in the Midbar could we appreciate the bigger story that was taking place.

There is another layer to this idea as well. Very often, we set out in life with grand goals and a vivid vision for our future. Many years later, when recalling that vision, we realize that we ended up somewhere drastically different than we had originally intended. This is the beauty of a spiritual journey. We set out with tremendous hishtadlus, hoping that our goals are rooted in the pursuit of a higher truth, a higher purpose. But simultaneously, we must have a deep sense of bitachon that wherever we end up is the ratzon Hashem. (We do not put in a measure of hishtadlus, and a measure of bitachon; we embark with one hundred percent hishtadlus and one hundred percent bitachon as well. In retrospect, we can look back and see how different Hashem’s plans were from our original ones, but in the now, we must devote all our energy into achieving the greatness that we currently believe is our true purpose.)

HUMANITY AS JOURNEYERS Until now, we have shown the beauty and depth of the spiritual journey, but we have not yet reached the essence of what it means for mankind to journey. There is a profound truth within the concept of journeying that touches on the very root of what it means to be human. As humans, we don’t simply journey; we are journeyers, we are becomers. Our very essence is to become, to expand, to evolve, and to transcend our limitations.

Our tzelem Elokim — the spark of G-dliness within us — does not grant us innate perfection but rather gives us the innate ability to become perfect.

The Gemara (Shabbos 88b) describes Moshe Rabbeinu’s journey as he ascended Har Sinai to receive the Torah. Upon his arrival on top, the malachim began complaining to Hashem, claiming that man has no right to receive the Torah.

The malachim believed that they were far superior to mortal beings, and the Torah should therefore remain with them. After all, human beings are lowly and fallible, and will only desecrate it. Hashem tells

Moshe to respond to these claims. Moshe is initially too scared to respond to the malachim and tells Hashem that he is “afraid that they will burn him alive.”

Rav Tzadok (Sichas Malachei Ha’shareis, perek 2) explains that malachim are perfect, without any limitation or sin, so Moshe felt unworthy to respond to their claims. Hashem therefore tells Moshe to grasp on to the Kisei Hakavod (Divine Throne) and respond.

Moshe proceeds to do so, asking: “What is written in the Torah?” Hashem tells Moshe the Aseres Hadibros, including: “I am Hashem your G-d who took you out of Mitzrayim, don’t serve idols, keep Shabbos, honor your parents, don’t kill, and don’t be jealous.” Moshe then turns to the malachim and asks: “Did Hashem take you out of Mitzrayim? Do you struggle with a desire to worship idols? Do you perform melachah during the week, that you must desist from it on Shabbos? Do you have parents?

Do you have a yetzer hara? Do you get jealous?” At this point, the malachim accepted Hashem’s will to give the Torah to the Jewish People, even giving Moshe spiritual gifts, and Moshe was able to descend with the Torah.

What is the meaning of this cryptic passage? Moshe’s claim for why the Jewish People are deserving of the Torah focuses on the weaknesses and challenges of human beings, not their perfection.

We are limited, imperfect beings with a yetzer hara, prone to mistakes and jealousy. Why is this a mark in our favor?

The simple answer to this question is that Moshe wasn’t trying to show humanity’s greatness; he was only trying to clarify why human beings needed the guidance of Torah, and how the Torah was more applicable to the Jewish People than malachim. There is, however, a much deeper layer here, and in our next article we will try to explore it and take our discussion to the next level.

We now have been given the Torah and its time to learn how to keep it! This week Sidra contains no less than 53 FIFTY THREE Mitzvot! Many of them are about the laws of how to be careful with other people’s feelings and possessions. Also, in the olden days, many people owned animals that could cause damage to things, so the laws of this are taught too. How about if you dig a pit and a donkey falls in to it? Or start a

garden fire which burns your neighbour’s haystack? When do you need to pay and when not?

What about lending money can you lend someone 50p and ask for 55p back? No! That’s interest (very interesting!) And, if your friend asks you to look after her lawnmower, you need to make sure it stays safe and certainly if you borrow a man’s hairbrush (or private airplane) you need to make sure you are super careful with it... There

At the end of the Sidra, Moshe goes up the mountain where he stays for 40 days and nights and learns all the Torah the Jewish people will ever learn!

And he prepares to come down the mountain to give it to them, but wait a few weeks for what happens in the end...

When West produced the queen of clubs it was allowed to hold, with dummy and East playing low clubs.

West was now faced with an awkward problem. It seemed that declarer started with three clubs otherwise his ducking the queen of clubs didn’t make sense. So, his original distribution was either was 4:3:3:3 or 4:4:2:3 shape.

West counted declarer’s tricks as four clubs, three hearts and one diamond. If declarer had a 3:4:3:3 shape then his fourth heart would be a trick. So, West exited with the jack of spades in the hope that East had the ace of that suit.

Dummy’s queen of spades was covered by the king and ace of spades. Declarer now claimed his contract, making one spade, three hearts, one diamond and four clubs.

I am often asked why shipping costs have risen so much in the last year. There is no simple answer to this. There are several components to the increases.

1. The cost of packing materials: – cardboard has risen in price from the day the pandemic started. Cartons are historically made largely from recycled paper and board and manufacturers gave the reason for increases as being due to people not re-cycling during the pandemic. The truth, I think, is that just a few large companies control the world market for board and they use that to their financial advantage!

2. The cost of sea freight: - This was not affected by the pandemic but shipping lines chose to place vessels into dry dock and then share the available space remaining with other shipping lines so as to maximise returns. Those partnerships are now falling apart and I hope to see freight rates reduce over the next 12 months.

3. Fuel: - Ships use a lot of fuel and the war in The Ukraine has increased the proportion of shipping charges that relate to fuel costs. Again, we watch for changes.

4. Container haulage: - There is no doubt that Brexit sent a lot of drivers home to the EU causing a shortage in the UK along with a shortage of containers due to the pandemic’s demand on PPE from the far east and the backlogs in shipping that this caused. This situation is, however, improving.
