Dances are often categorized as either “abstract” or “narrative.” In reality, I believe most works fall upon a continuum, with elements of both. For me, good work, whether abstract or narrative, speaks of the human condition and touches the heart. Game Changers explores the interplay of these ideas. We present three works which are, on the surface, abstract. But true emotional content is never on the surface: it resides within and, in the case of INFRA, below. As Artistic Director, I am a curator of dance. I try to assemble works that resonate with one another, like colors in a Rothko painting. I am extremely proud to present Fool’s Paradise, INFRA, and Year of the Rabbit together. I believe they are some of the finest dance creations of the last decade. They are fresh and they have heart, each in a different way. Fool’s Paradise is sublimely beautiful. We presented the piece last spring in Florida and a woman, realizing I was the Artistic Director, leaned forward and said, “I am in my eighties and this is the first ballet I have seen. If I had known it was going to be so beautiful, I would not have waited this long.” INFRA is heartbreaking. Inspired by the terrorist bombings in London in 2005, INFRA explores longing and loss. Year of the Rabbit is whimsical and joyous, a sensory explosion. Clever and original choreography captures the creative spirit, like holding a sprite in your hands. Each of these masterworks is inspired by, commissioned, or adapted to new music, and with INFRA, the artistry of Julian Opie. I hope you enjoy this performance,

Christopher Wheeldon’s Fool’s Paradise was created for his former company Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company and had its premiere at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in 2007. The dance was inspired by the magical romanticism of Joby Talbot’s music, originally written as a contemporary score to the 1916 silent film The Dying Swan. Wheeldon asked Talbot to fully orchestrate the score for his company and brought on American fashion designer Narciso Rodriguez to design the costumes, creating a unique fusion of new fashion, new music, and dance. Fool’s Paradise blends classical technique with a modern sensibility in choreography of great beauty. Bathed in warm light, the dancers move through solos, duets, and trios, occasionally settling into still, sculptural tableaux. The work contains a moving pas de deux and builds to a spectacular arrangement for the whole ensemble as gold petals shower down on the stage. “I wanted to capture the innate drama of the music without telling a literal story. It’s as if the couples, trios, and groupings are passing through a fantasy realm reminiscent of the fairyland of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” — Christopher Wheeldon

INFRA is a piece of “sumptuous beauty and shimmering possibility,” (The Telegraph) that combines the brilliance of world-renowned artist Julian Opie, Max Richter’s mournful mix of industrial and string quartet writing, and the poignant choreography of Wayne McGregor, one of the most exciting and relevant choreographers in dance. Opie’s set — a narrow strip of LED screen that runs the full width of the stage — adds a beautiful and hypnotic sense of the monotony of human life as electronic figures walk on and off the screen throughout the piece. Beneath these figures nonchalantly strolling by (the word infra means below), dancers perform intense and thoughtful choreography, “exposing the agonies of indecision, doubt, and hope that live under the surface of the skin” (The Telegraph). With this simple, yet incredibly striking piece,“McGregor’s movement speaks of compassion and anger, happiness and anxiety, tenderness and tears” (The Times). INFRA is a state-of-the-art ballet, combining emotionally moving dance with the calm indifference of the cyber world, resulting in a revolutionary piece of 21st-century dance. “Literally below the life-affirming Opie screen and beneath the haunting surface of Max’s music, I have attempted to create a series of human intimacies, bared from under the skin — prosaic, imperfect, and fragile. In this landscape of miniatures that expose the very signs of life, physical empathies and emotional inferences rescue the lost narratives of the population on stage. Justin Peck’s acclaimed Year of the Rabbit highlights its corps de ballet as they form intricate and architectural patterns that envelop its featured dancers. Peck’s second work for New York City Ballet (where he is Resident Choreographer), Year of the Rabbit is a collaboration with American singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens and is set to Stevens’ Enjoy Your Rabbit, an electronica album and song cycle based on the Chinese zodiac. The ballet features a new orchestration of the score by Michael Atkinson that was created specifically for the ballet. Year of the Rabbit is an elaboration of Peck’s Tales of a Chinese Zodiac, which was created in 2010 for the New York Choreographic Institute.

BIOS

ASHLEY WHEATER Artistic Director Born in Scotland and raised in England, Ashley Wheater was trained at The Royal Ballet School. Wheater began his professional career with The Royal Ballet and danced at the London Festival Ballet, The Australian Ballet, The Joffrey Ballet, and San Francisco Ballet. In 1997, he became Ballet Master at San Francisco Ballet, and in 2002, Assistant to the Artistic Director. In 2007, Wheater was appointed Artistic Director of The Joffrey Ballet. New work is the life blood of a company, and he has introduced numerous premieres to the repertoire. In 2008, the Boeing Corporation recognized his commitment to community outreach and diversity in the world of dance, presenting him the “Game Changer” award. In 2010, Wheater, representing The Joffrey Ballet, was named Lincoln Academy Laureate, the highest honor presented by the State of Illinois. The Chicago Tribune selected Wheater as 2013 “Chicagoan of the Year” for his contributions to dance. In 2014, Wheater accepted the Chicago Spirit of Innovation Award for The Joffrey Ballet and in 2015, he received the University of Chicago Rosenberger Medal for Outstanding Achievement in the Creative and Performing Arts. He also serves as the Artistic Director of the Joffrey Academy of Dance, the Official School of The Joffrey Ballet.

SCOTT SPECK Music Director Scott Speck has inspired international acclaim as a conductor of passion, intelligence, and winning personality. In addition to his position as Music Director for the Joffrey, he is the Artistic Director of the Chicago Philharmonic and Music Director of the Mobile (AL) and West Michigan Symphony Orchestras. He has led major orchestras at London’s Royal Opera House, the Paris Opera, Washington’s Kennedy Center, San Francisco’s War Memorial Opera House, and the Los Angeles Music Center. He has been Conductor of the San Francisco Ballet; Music Advisor/ Conductor of the Honolulu Symphony; and Associate Conductor of the Los Angeles Opera. He was named Principal Guest Conductor of the China Film Philharmonic in Beijing. Speck is the co-author of three of the world’s best-selling books on classical music and dance: Classical Music for Dummies, Opera for Dummies, and Ballet for Dummies. These books have been translated into twenty languages and are available around the world. A Fulbright scholar and summa cum laude graduate of Yale; Speck is a regular commentator on NPR, the BBC, ABC Australia, and Voice of Russia. CHRISTOPHER WHEELDON Choreographer Fool’s Paradise

English choreographer Christopher Wheeldon is Artistic Associate of The Royal Ballet. He trained at The Royal Ballet School and danced with the Company from 1991–1993. For The Royal Ballet, he has choreographed Tryst, DGV: Danse à grande vitesse, Electric Counterpoint, ‘Trespass’ (Metamorphosis: Titian 2012, in collaboration with Alastair Marriott), Aeternum (Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production), Strapless, and the three-act ballets Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and The Winter’s Tale. Wheeldon was born in Yeovil and trained at The Royal Ballet School. In 1991, he won gold medal at the Prix de Lausanne with a solo of his own creation and that year entered The Royal Ballet, where Kenneth MacMillan encouraged him in his choreographic work. In 1993, Wheeldon joined New York City Ballet (NYCB), promoted to soloist in 1998. He created his first work for NYCB, Slavonic Dances, in 1997 and became the company’s first Resident Choreographer in 2001. Works for NYCB include Polyphonia (London Critics’ Circle Award and Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production) and The Nightingale and the Rose. Wheeldon regularly choreographs for leading international companies, including Boston Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, and The Joffrey Ballet. In 2007, he founded Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company and became the first British choreographer to create a new work for the Bolshoi Ballet. In 2012, he collaborated with Marriott on the closing ceremony of the London Olympic Games. His awards include the Tony Award® for Best Choreography (An American in Paris). He was made an OBE in 2016, and that year was artistic director for Les Arts Décoratifs’ Fashion Forward exhibition. The position of Artistic Associate of The Royal Ballet is generously supported by Kenneth and Susan Green.

WAYNE MCGREGOR Choreographer INFRA Born in 1970, Wayne McGregor CBE is a multi-award-winning British choreographer and director, internationally renowned for trailblazing innovations in performance that have radically redefined dance in the modern era. His experiments have led him into collaborative dialogue with an array of artistic forms, scientific disciplines, and technological interventions. Studio Wayne McGregor is the creative engine of McGregor’s lifelong choreographic inquiry into thinking through and with the body. It encompasses his own touring company of dancers, Company Wayne McGregor; creative collaborations across dance, film, music, visual art, technology and science; and highly specialized Creative Learning and Engagement programmes. In early 2017, Studio Wayne McGregor will move into its own newly created studio space at Here East in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Company Wayne McGregor is McGregor’s ensemble of highly skilled dancers. Founded in 1992, this was the original instrument through which McGregor evolved his distinctive visual style, revealing the movement possibilities of the body in ever more precise degrees of articulation. McGregor is Resident Choreographer at The Royal Ballet, where his productions are acclaimed for their daring reconfiguring of classical language. He is commissioned by and has works in the repertories of the most important ballet companies in the world, including Paris Opera Ballet, NDT1, New York City Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, Australian Ballet, and San Francisco Ballet. Wayne McGregor is Professor of Choreography at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and has an Honorary Doctor of Science from Plymouth University and an Honorary Doctor of Letters from University of Leeds. He is part of the Circle of Cultural Fellows at King’s College London. McGregor’s work has earned him a multitude of awards including four Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards, two Time Out Awards, two South Bank Show Awards, two Olivier Awards, a prix Benois de la Danse, and two Golden Mask Awards. In 2011, McGregor was awarded a CBE for Services to Dance. Most recently McGregor premiered Multiverse, Obsidian Tear and Woolf Works for The Royal Ballet, Tree of Codes for Company Wayne McGregor, Alea Sands for The Paris Opera Ballet, Kairos for Zurich Ballet, and presented Thinking with the Body at Wellcome Collection, an exhibition exploring his collaborative inquiry into choreographic thinking. 2016–2017 SEASON Joffrey Ballet | 21

At 29 years old, Justin Peck has already been hailed as an important new voice in 21st-century choreography. He is currently the Resident Choreographer and a soloist dancer with the New York City Ballet (NYCB). Peck, originally from San Diego, California, moved to New York at the age of 15 to attend the School of American Ballet. In 2006, he was invited by ballet master in-chief Peter Martins to become a member of the NYCB.

Since joining NYCB, Peck has danced extensive repertoire, including principal roles in ballets by George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Peter Martins, Alexei Ratmansky, Benjamin Millepied, Christopher Wheeldon, and many others. In 2013, Peck was promoted to the rank of Soloist. Peck had his choreographic debut in 2009, and has been fervently creating since then. He has been commissioned to create new ballets for the NYCB, the Paris Opera Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, the New York Choreographic Institute, the School of American Ballet, the Miami City Ballet, the New World Symphony, L.A. Dance Project, NY Fall For Dance, The Guggenheim Museum, and more. He has collaborated with the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Shepard Fairey, John Baldessari, Bryce Dessner, Marcel Dzama, Humberto Leon, Prabal Gurung, Sterling Ruby, Mary Katrantzou, and Karl Jensen. In 2014, Peck was appointed Resident Choreographer of NYCB, making him the second choreographer in the history of the institution to hold this position. At NYCB, he has created over 10 ballets, including Year of the Rabbit (2012), In Creases (2012), Paz de La Jolla (2013), Everywhere We Go (2014), Rodeo: Four Dance Episodes (2015), the Most Incredible Thing (2016), and others. In 2015, Peck received the Bessie Award for Outstanding Production for his work Rodeo: Four Dance Episodes. In addition to his work for stage, Peck’s choreography extends into many other mediums. He has choreographed for dance-on-film in collaboration with Vogue, Nowness, Pitchfork Media, and the Guggenheim Museum; has choreographed print shoots for Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Vogue China, Vogue Australia, New York Magazine, Dujour Magazine, the Last Magazine; and in 2015, choreographed the Opening Ceremony runway show for New York Fashion Week. In 2014, the choreographer, then age 26, was the subject of filmmaker Jody Lee Lipes’s Ballet 422. The documentary, released by Magnolia Pictures, followed Peck for two months as he created NYCB’s 422nd original dance, Paz de la Jolla.

DAVIDE DI PRETORO Coach INFRA Originally from Colleferro (Rome), Davide Di Pretoro studied ballet and contemporary dance in Rome at the National Dance Academy. In 2002, he won a scholarship to study at the Cunningham Dance School in New York City. He danced for Company Wayne McGregor from 2010 until 2013. Between 2003 and 2016, he worked across Europe as a dance artist with many established companies and choreographers such as: Thierry Smits/Cie THOR, Ballet Preljocaj, Itzik Galili-Krisztina DeChatel/Dansgroep Amsterdam, Andonis Foniadakis, Virgilio Sieni, Sasha Waltz and Guests, among others. As a choreographer, he won the The International Choreographic Competition 2013 in Milan, was commissioned to create a work for the International Festival Invito alla Danza in 2014 in Rome, and created a piece for the Italian National Dance Academy in 2016. Di Pretoro teaches his classes for many dance schools and companies across Europe and continues his collaboration with McGregor as a re-stager of several of his works such as L’Anatomie de la Sensation for Paris Opera Ballet, INFRA for Hessisches Staatsballett and The Joffrey Ballet, Entity and FAR for Ballet Junior de Genève, Josette Baïz/ Groupe Grenade and Milano Contemporary Ballet. As McGregor’s assistant, he worked on the creation of Alea Sands for Paris Opera Ballet and the West Kowloon Cultural District Residency in Hong Kong.

Janie Taylor was born in Houston, Texas, where she began her ballet training at age two with Gilbert Rome. She trained at the Giacobbe Academy of Dance in New Orleans from 1993–1996. After attending two years of the summer program at the School of American Ballet (SAB), she became a full-time student in the fall of 1996. While a student at SAB, she originated a featured role in Christopher Wheeldon’s Soiree Musicale for the Spring workshop performance in June of 1998. She received the Mae L. Wien Award at the SAB Annual Workshop and was invited to become an apprentice with New York City Ballet (NYCB). A month later, she became a member of NYCB’s corps de ballet. She was promoted to the rank of Soloist in February 2001 and to Principal in 2005. During her career with NYCB, she originated roles in ballets choreographed by Peter Martins and Benjamin Millepied. She also performed featured roles in numerous ballets by George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, as well as pieces by Lynne Taylor-Corbett, Susan Stroman, Twyla Tharp, and Miriam Mahdaviani. Q&A WITH THE GAME CHANGERS CHOREOGRAPHERS

All three of our Game Changers choreographers were appointed Resident Choreographer for major ballet companies at a young age: Wayne McGregor (The Royal Ballet), Christopher Wheeldon and Justin Peck (New York City Ballet). We spoke with them about what inspires them and how they recharge their creative energy. What was the most CHALLENGING OR REWARDING ASPECT of taking on the role of Resident Choreographer? WM

Staying true to my own artistic vision. Opening up the possibilities of what ballet can be and say.

with my choreographic work. The most rewarding thing is the continued growth, both with my personal choreographic development and with the working relationships I forge. CW

It was an overwhelming honor to become the first resident choreographer of New York City Ballet. I think the responsibility to make work that fit in to such a richly populated repertoire was the biggest challenge. The rewards seemed boundless.

What MUSIC are you currently listening to? What about a piece of music inspires or moves you? CW

Leonard Bernstein at the moment, in preparation for a new work for the Bernstein Centennial celebration at The Royal Ballet in 2018. Ultimately, a piece of music must make me want to dance. Joanna Newsom’s Divers, some Aaron Copland concert pieces, the Mica Levi score written for the film Jackie, Stravinsky’s Firebird suite, and Frank Ocean’s Blonde. There is always a healthy rotation. Jlin. Music that transports you to another dimension. Beyond words.

What BOOK are you currently reading/last book you read? WM

Human Traces by Sebastian Faulks and The Brutal World by Peter Chadwick. Talking Theatre, a collection of interviews of actors, directors and designers by Sir Richard Eyre. Robert McKee’s Story, which is a book on the structure/style/ substance of storytelling.

Do you prefer creating ABSTRACT OR NARRATIVE work? CW

I love to make both types of work.

There is always a bit of both in almost all of my work.

I don’t believe there is a difference. A body cannot be abstract.

What UNIQUE QUALITIES do Joffrey dancers bring to your work? JP

The ecosystem that exists at Joffrey is one of great joy, openness, buoyancy, passion, and determination. Athleticism, drive, sensitivity.

The quality that makes Joffrey Ballet so unique for me, is that the dancers care deeply for the artistic growth of the company as a whole. More so than in any other ballet company, there is a feeling of a common goal.

How do you RECHARGE your creative energy? JP

I find the best way to stay energized creatively is to take in all sorts of art and culture.

Time with my husband. We are passionate travelers.

Research, unfamiliar adventures, and Lamu (East Africa).

What are your HOPES for 2017? WM

That art and artists continue to be individual, inspirational, and challenging. That as an artist I am able to continue to make works that can help people escape from the craziness of our world. A hope for greater peace, respect, and tolerance, both domestically and globally. I can only hope for more positivity in the world.

JANIE TAYLOR Stager Year of the Rabbit (continued from page 23) Taylor appeared in the film Center Stage directed by Nicholas Hytner, which was released in 2000. She retired from the NYCB on March 1, 2014. Taylor is now a repetiteur setting ballets for Justin Peck and Benjamin Millepied on companies around the world and has since started a career in design. She has designed costumes for the NYCB and LA Dance Project.

JOBY TALBOT Composer Fool’s Paradise Born in London in 1971, Joby Talbot studied privately with Brian Elias and under Simon Bainbridge at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Talbot’s catalogue is diverse, comprising scores for dance and screen, works for orchestra, choir, soloists and chamber groups, as well as a recent and critically acclaimed opera debut with Everest, premiered by The Dallas Opera in early 2015. Talbot’s collaborations with Christopher Wheeldon include Fool’s Paradise (2007), Tide Harmonic (2013), and the full-length Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (2011), and The Winter’s Tale (2014). Further prominent works for dance include Chroma (2006), Genus (2007), and Entity (2008) with Wayne McGregor and Chamber (2012) with Medhi Walerski and Nederlands Dans Theater.

MAX RICHTER Composer INFRA

BIOS

Hailed as the most influential composer of his generation, electroacoustic polymath Max Richter defies definition: composer he may be, but he is also a pianist, producer, remixer, and collaborator, and beyond argument, one of the most prolific of contemporary musical artists. Inspired equally by Bach, punk rock, and ambient electronica, Richter’s sonic world blends a formal classical training (he graduated from The Royal Academy of Music) with modern technology. His unique and distinctive brand of heartbroken melodicism bridges the minimalist greats with pioneering electronics and the contemporary digital music production universe. Over the year, Richter has become best known for his genredefining and highly influential solo albums which have given rise to and are seen as ‘landmarks’ (The Independent, Pitchfork) of the ever-burgeoning ‘neo-classical’ movement, but his monumental collaborative output also encompasses concert music, operas, ballets, art and video installations, and multiple film, theater, and television scores. Ballets include his many collaborative ventures with maverick Royal Ballet Resident Choreographer Wayne McGregor, with his works also being used by, amongst others, The Joffrey Ballet, Nederlands Dans Teatre, Lucinda Childs, New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Dutch National Ballet, Dresden Semper Oper, Ballet du Rhin, and Northern Ballet.

SUFJAN STEVENS Composer Year of the Rabbit Sufjan Stevens is a singer-songwriter currently living in New York City. A preoccupation with epic concepts has motivated two state records (Michigan & Illinois), a collection of sacred and biblical songs (Seven Swans), an electronic album for the animals of the Chinese zodiac (Enjoy Your Rabbit), two Christmas box sets (Songs for Christmas, vol. 1-5 and Silver & Gold, vol. 6-10), and a programmatic tone poem for the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (The BQE). In 2010, Sufjan released an expansive EP (All Delighted People) and the full-length The Age of Adz, a collection of songs partly inspired by the outsider artist Royal Robertson. His most recent release is Carrie & Lowell, released in March of 2015. Born in Detroit and raised in Northern Michigan, Stevens attended Hope College, in Holland, Michigan, and the Masters program for writers at the New School for Social Research.

CHRIS EKERS Sound Design INFRA Sound designer Chris Ekers made his Royal Ballet debut in 2008 on Wayne McGregor’s INFRA and has since returned to work on McGregor’s Woolf Works. Ekers trained as a musician. He began his career as a sound designer in 1981 with theatre sound rental company Autograph Sound Recording. During this time, he was involved in many West End musical productions, including Song and Dance, Starlight Express, and Chess. Since 1987, he has worked as a freelance sound engineer and designer with composers and ensembles and with dance, theatre, and opera companies, including with Gavin Bryars, Jan Garbarek, Max Richter, and the Hilliard Ensemble. In addition to works for The Royal Ballet, Ekers’s collaborations with Richter include touring with his ensemble in the UK and internationally, and the world premiere of the eight-hour Sleep in Kraftwerk, Berlin. Ekers is Head of Sound for the annual Fès Festival of Sacred World Music in Morocco. Previous positions include Head of Sound for Assembly Theatre at Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Senior Production Manager for Audio, Broadcast Audio and Communications for London 2012 Ceremonies Ltd.

MICHAEL P. ATKINSON Orchestration Year of the Rabbit Michael P. Atkinson actively participates in the cultural life of New York City and Brooklyn as a Hornist, Arranger, Conductor, and Composer. He holds B.M. and M.M. in French horn performance from the Juilliard School, where he studied with Jerome Ashby and William Purvis. As a younger horn student in Pittsburgh, he studied with Dennis R. Abelson and Howard Hillyer. As an arranger, Atkinson has frequently worked with Sufjan Stevens. In 2007, he was commissioned to realize songs from Stevens’ 2001 Enjoy Your Rabbit for string quartet. These works would later capture the attention of New York City Ballet member and choreographer Justin Peck, and in 2011, Atkinson was commissioned to orchestrate seven movements from the album Run Rabbit Run to accompany a new ballet called Year of the Rabbit.

JULIAN OPIE Set Design INFRA

BIOS

Julian Opie (British, b.1958) is a sculptor and digital artist associated with the New British Sculpture movement, and best known for portraits that reduce subjects to essential lines and color planes. Born in Oxford, he studied at Goldsmith’s School of Art from 1979 to 1983, during which time he created the series Eat Dirt, Art History of tongue-in-cheek copies of famous artworks. In his early work, Opie made steel sculptures of domestic appliances, architectural structures, and abstract, geometrical shapes. More recently, he has focused on digital media such as LED projections and graphic art. His work draws on classical portraiture, Japanese woodblock prints, and Pop Art aesthetics, particularly the work of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Opie has created a stylized, fragmentary visual language that depersonalizes his subjects, but he includes details, such as an exotic flower in Muliati, Shop Assistant (2002), specific titles, and different colored background to distinguish each work. His work is included in several public collections, including the Tate Gallery in London, the National Museum of Art in Osaka, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He lives and works in London.

NARCISO RODRIGUEZ Costume Design Fool’s Paradise One of the foremost American designers during the last two decades, Narciso Rodriguez plays a singular role in fashion. In 1996, Rodriguez received international acclaim when he designed the bias-cut wedding dress that Carolyn Bessette wore for her marriage to John F. Kennedy, Jr. On November 4, 2008, Narciso Rodriguez became part of a monumental event in American history. To celebrate her husband Barack Obama’s triumphant victory as the first African American president of The United States, Michelle Obama chose to wear a dress from the designer’s Spring 2009 Collection. “It was both emotional and exhilarating,” Rodriguez said. “To be part of this memorable moment in history was a great honor.” The designer was again honored when the First Lady chose to wear Narciso Rodriguez to her husband’s first State of the Union address in 2009 and his last State of the Union address in 2016. Today, Narciso Rodriguez’s fashion house is based in New York City where he shows his women’s ready-to-wear collections.

MORITZ JUNGE Costume Design INFRA Moritz Junge was born in Germany and studied at the Berlin University of the Arts and the Slade School of Fine Art, London. He was the overall winner of the Linbury Prize for stage design in 2001. For The Royal Ballet his work includes Live Fire Exercise, Limen, INFRA (also Mariinsky Ballet), and Chroma (also Alvin Ailey, Boston Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, San Francisco Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, Bolshoi, DNB). Most recently he created the designs for Wayne McGregor’s new work for The Royal Ballet, Multiverse. Other opera and ballet work includes Cosi fan tutti (Opera Australia); Cavalleria rusticana/Pagliacci (Metropolitan Opera, New York), Les Troyens, Aida, and The Tempest (Royal Opera); Don Carlo (Bolshoi); L’Anatomie de la sensation (Paris Opera Ballet); Outlier (NYCB); Daphne (La Monnaie, Brussels); Messiah (ENO, Opéra de Lyon); Dyad 1929 (Australian Ballet); Renature (NDT); and La Cenerentola (Glyndebourne). Designs for theatre include A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Shakespeare’s Globe); In the Republic of Happiness (Royal Court); The Kitchen, Dido, Queen of Carthage, and The Hour we Knew Nothing of Each Other (National Theatre); Judgment Day (Almeida); and All About my Mother (Old Vic). He designed costumes for the London 2012 Paralympics opening ceremony.

PENNY JACOBUS Lighting Design Fool’s Paradise Penny Jacobus is currently the Lighting Director for the New York City Ballet and has been with the company since 2000. Her credits include lighting four world premieres in addition to managing the lighting department for the repertory and touring seasons of the company. Additional credits include Lighting Supervisor and Designer for Christopher Wheeldon and the Morphoses Dance Company, designs for Tom Gold Dance Foundation, and recreations of NYCB designs at various ballet companies. She previously worked as a staff assistant lighting designer for the New York City Opera and assisted on several NYC Broadway shows. Penny graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and she was the Gilbert V. Hemsley Intern in Lighting in 1997.

Lucy Carter trained in Dance and Drama at the Roehampton Institute before training in Lighting Design at Central School of Speech and Drama. In 2008, she received the Knight of Illumination Award for Dance for Chroma and in 2015 for Woolf Works. She is the main collaborator with choreographer Wayne McGregor. BRANDON STIRLING BAKER Lighting Design Year of the Rabbit Brandon Stirling Baker’s lighting can be seen in the repertories of New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Berlin Staatsballet, Dutch National Ballet, Miami City Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Houston Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, LA Dance Project, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Guggenheim Bilbao, and many others. Baker has worked with choreographer Justin Peck since 2010 collaborating on over fifteen world premieres internationally. Baker’s lighting for ballet was awarded with the 2016 Lotos Foundation Prize for emerging artists. Baker is a graduate of the California Institute of the Arts and studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama in Glasgow, Scotland.

JACK MEHLER Lighting Design Fool’s Paradise, INFRA A Chicago-area native, Jack Mehler earned a BFA from the University of Illinois/Krannert Center for the Performing Arts and then an MFA from New York University/Tisch School of the Arts. Based in New York for the last 19 years, Mr. Mehler designs lighting and/or scenery for an exciting mix of dance, musicals, plays, and commercial projects for groups such as Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Ballet Florida, Ballet Memphis, Buglisi-Foreman Dance, Donald Byrd/Spectrum Dance, Capital Rep, Cleveland Playhouse, Freedom Theatre, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, Manhattan Theatre Club, North Shore Music Theatre, Norwegian National Opera Ballet, Paper Mill Playhouse, San Francisco Ballet, Seattle Rep, The Spoleto Festival, Syracuse Stage, The Working Theatre, and the WPA Theatre among many others. Mehler’s designs for choreographer Lar Lubovitch include Pentimento, Elemental Brubeck, Dvorak Serenade, Little Rhapsodies, and Jangle for Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, as well as Nature Boy (previously Love’s Stories) for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and Recordare for José Limón. For The Joffrey Ballet, Mehler designed Donald Byrd’s Motown Suite and To Know Her, as well as the 2007 and 2008 versions of The Nutcracker (based on Tom Skelton’s original design). Mehler also provides Design Coordination/Owner’s Representation for arts organizations building or renovating performance and rehearsal facilities, having recently completed work on a major project for a Minnesota performing arts school with a 3,000 seat amphitheatre and 23,500 sq ft year-round rehearsal facility.

FACILITIES AND SERVICES EFROYMSON PATRON SERVICES CENTER is located in Aisle 1 of the main floor and is open throughout performances to assist patrons with any needs they may have.

THE AUDITORIUM THEATRE HAS A STRICT POLICY OF NO LATE SEATING. Patrons arriving after the performance begins, or leaving the seating area for any reason, will be seated in a designated section and may take their ticketed seats at intermission.

CONCESSIONS are available throughout the theatre lobbies.

OUTSIDE FOOD AND BEVERAGE ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE THEATRE. For Joffrey performances, all purchased snacks must be consumed in the lobby. Only bottled water is allowed in the seating area.

RESTROOMS are located on the lower level and in the Baryl Family Lobby (third floor). Accessible restroom facilities are located in the southwest corner of the main lobby and on the third floor. ACCESSIBILITY: The Auditorium Theatre is accessible to all patrons and fully complies with ADA requirements. Various levels of accommodations are available to patrons who require assisted listening devices, signed performances, or accessible seating. Additionally, our Efroymson Patron Services Center office, located in Aisle 1 of the main lobby, is open throughout performances to assist patrons with any needs they may have.
