Most of us realize that creative vision is fundamental to the arts, but sometimes we do not recognize the importance of community support in advancing our work. The dance you enjoy on the stage is only possible because of the commitment of people “behind the scenes.” These people allow us to be “bold,” encourage us to take chances, and guarantee that dance remains a living, evolving art form. Please join me in thanking the generous donors who supported this program: Sage Foundation, The Anne and Burt Kaplan Fund of the Mayer & Morris Kaplan Family Foundation, Jay Franke and David Herro, and MacLean-Fogg. I am particularly grateful to the late Burt Kaplan, a champion of the creative spirit and an inspiration for all of us in the Chicago arts community. As one of Burt’s final gestures of generosity, he initiated a gift which supports Ashley Page’s world premiere. Robert Joffrey first introduced Jir˘í Kylián’s Forgotten Land into the Joffrey repertoire in 1985. I was a dancer with the Company at the time. I was moved at the core. Here was a groundbreaking work with soul and purpose. We introduced Yuri Possokhov’s RAkU in September of 2014. After erupting in an ovation that lasted for several minutes, the audience lingered in silence, contemplating the power of their emotional response. As we celebrate our 60th year, it is helpful to realize that bold artistic vision has defined The Joffrey Ballet from the beginning. The author, Sasha Anawalt, summarized her book about the Company by writing: “The lesson of Robert Joffrey is that the artistic spirit is indomitable… Repeatedly The Joffrey Ballet was quashed, and repeatedly Robert Joffrey resurrected it in a new form…each time, he aimed beyond his reach… That is the promise of the arts. This is the greatness of American dance.” Celebrating the artistic spirit,

Our program today is named Bold Moves. While this title describes the artistic choices on the program, it can also be applied to the state of the Joffrey today. It is in the spirit of “bold moves” that I am “moved” to express appreciation for the impact of donor support on our Company, and that I will also be “bold” in presenting a call to action to you, our dedicated audience. After 20 years in Chicago, the Joffrey is poised for its best decade ever. The creation and presentation of new work — like Ashley Page’s world premiere — enhances the thoughtful programming and artistry our beloved Artistic Director Ashley Wheater brings to our entire subscription season year after year. Our commitment to live music, which you will hear as a part of every production this season, is another investment the Joffrey has made in its programming. We aim to delight Chicago with world-class dance programs that are relevant and beautifully performed, while at the same time providing access to broad audiences. Your ticket or subscription purchase provides less than half of what it costs to produce our season each year. Though Joffrey is known for its efficiency (we were recognized by Chicago magazine as one of Chicago’s best charities in 2015), we must raise millions of dollars each year to present the kinds of programs you are enjoying today. To those of you who have already been generous, we send our thanks for your support. ou can help keep us dancing by making a charitable gift to the Joffrey. Y Whether large or small, your support will have an impact that you — and tens of thousands of others — will see, hear, and experience. To make a gift today, visit our website at joffrey.org/donate.

BALLET NOTES
FORGOTTEN LAND — Forgotten Land is a work made in the idiom of a ‘musical choreography,’ meaning that all choreography derives directly from the music. The musical score itself was commissioned by the nationalist government of Japan in 1939. Benjamin Britten received a commission to write a score which would be used as a part of the celebrations commemorating the 2600th anniversary of Japan’s existence. Britten accepted it and wrote a work entitled Sinfonia da Requiem. But the fact that he used Latin Christian liturgical text as an underlying theme, lead to the refusal of his composition. The Sinfonia da Requiem is divided into three parts: Lacrimosa (Weeping) — Dies Irae (God’s Wrath) — Requiem Aeternum (Eternal Rest). This piece is now dedicated to the memory of his parents. Benjamin Britten was born in East Anglia, a part of England always threatened by the sea. I have taken the idea of the everlasting presence of the ocean as a life-giving and life-taking force, as a main theme for my choreography. Another very important source of inspiration for me was the famous painting by Edvard Munch, Dance of Life (1899), in which the woman in three stages of her life is very clearly present. In close collaboration with the painter John Macfarlane, the design for stage and costumes emerged, taking into account all these influences. — Jir˘í Kylián.

BALLET NOTES
TIPPING POINT — Music is so often the primary factor for me in guiding a new dance work, and it’s definitely the case with this piece. The violin concerto by Thomas Adès (Concentric Paths) is brimming with overwrought tensions and, although the writing isn’t particularly rhythmic, it’s a very physical piece of music and suggested itself to me on first hearing. It’s quite ‘dark’ music, and conjures images of something elemental taking place — the shifting tectonic plates of the earth’s geological structures, for instance — and carries within it a sense of uneasy alliances and claustrophobic atmospheres. At times the choreography is placed ‘alongside’ the music, and at others it inhabits it completely, creating a kind of physical map or commentary through the score. The design (by my long-time collaborator Jon Morrell) reflects these moods and qualities, encasing the ballet in its own world and enhancing the activities of the dancers. The lighting design (by David Finn) is another crucial layer of the work, bringing the design and the dancing into sharper focus and conjuring atmospheres that spring directly from the music. In this way, it’s a truly collaborative project. — Ashley Page

has more in common with traditional Japanese theater than with European-style storytelling. Basing his ballet on the burning of Kyoto’s Golden Pavilion in 1950, but setting it in an earlier period, he adopted a style similar to Noh theatre, which presents the essence of a story rather than a literal depiction. “It is aesthetic lines, but not story lines,” Possokhov said. The choreographer pairs inventive, classically based movement with folk-based character steps and slow-moving butoh. Shinji Eshima’s commissioned score for full orchestra uses no traditional Japanese instruments, yet conveys a Japanese feeling and incorporates a recurring love theme, Morse code, and Buddhist chanting to create a sense of burning emotion and unspeakable pain. Created for the San Francisco Ballet in 2011 (his 13th for the Company), RAkU is a story of love and separation, desire and jealousy, violence and grief, simply told to stunning effect.

JIR˘Í KYLIÁN Choreographer, Forgotten Land
BIOS
Jir˘í Kylián (Czechoslovakia, 1947) started his dance career at the age of nine at the School of the National Ballet in Prague. In 1962, he was accepted as a student at the Prague Conservatory. He left Prague when he received a scholarship for The Royal Ballet School in London in 1967. After this, he left to join the Stuttgart Ballet led by John Cranko. Here Kylián made his debut as a choreographer with Paradox for the Noverre Gesellschaft. Later, Cranko asked him to create more works for the Noverre Company. After having made three ballets for Nederlands Dans Theater (Viewers, Stoolgame and La Cathédrale Engloutie), he became Artistic Director of the Company in 1975. In 1978, he helped rebuild the Nederlands Dans Theater with Sinfonietta, which earned international recognition. That same year, he and Carel Birnie founded Nederlands Dans Theater II, which served as a bridge between school and professional company life. It was meant to give young dancers the opportunity to develop their skills and talents, and to function as a breeding ground for young talent. In 1991, he also initiated Nederlands Dans Theater III, the company for older dancers above forty years of age. This three dimensional structure was unique in the world of dance. In 1995, Kylián designed a performance which all of the dancers of NDT I, II, and III were in, entitled Arcimboldo. After an extraordinary record of service, Kylián handed over the artistic leadership in 1999, but remained associated to the dance company as House Choreographer until December 2009. Jir˘í Kylián has created nearly 100 works for the Nederlands Dans Theater, Stuttgart Ballet, Paris Opera, Swedish Television, Bayerisches Staatsballett München, and the Tokyo Ballet, among others. His works are performed by companies and schools worldwide. In the course of his career, Kylián received many international awards including: Officer of the Orange Order (Netherlands), Honorary Doctorate (Juilliard School New York), three Nijinsky Awards for Best Choreographer, Company, and Work (Monte Carlo), Benoit de la Dance (Moscow and Berlin), Honorary Medal of the President of the Czech Republic, Commander of the Legion d’honneur (France), and in 2008 he was distinguished with one of the highest royal honors, the Medal of the Order of the House of Orange given to him by Her Majesty the Queen Beatrix from the Netherlands. In 2011, Kylián received the Lifetime Achievement Award in the field of dance and theater by the Czech Ministry of Culture in Prague.

ASHLEY PAGE, OBE Choreographer, Tipping Point Ashley Page trained at The Royal Ballet School before joining The Royal Ballet in 1975. During his formative years in the Company, he worked closely with Frederick Ashton and Kenneth MacMillan, and with visiting choreographers including Glen Tetley and, crucially, Richard Alston, who became a mentor for Page during his subsequent development as a choreographer. He was promoted to the rank of Principal dancer in 1984, the same year in which he choreographed his first professional work for the Company, A Broken Set of Rules. Page continued to develop his choreographic ‘voice’ alongside his dancing career, creating 18 ballets for the Company as well as being commissioned by Rambert and Dutch National Ballet among others. He became known for his often daring collaborations with visual artists and contemporary composers, and for his interest in finding new contexts for dance to explore. In 1994–95 his Fearful Symmetries (for The Royal Ballet), which provided a celebrated leading male role for Irek Mukhamedov, won the Olivier and Time Out awards for best new dance production. In 2002, after 27 years with The Royal Ballet, Page was offered the Artistic Directorship of the then-failing Scottish Ballet. Over the subsequent decade, he redeveloped them into an internationally renowned modern ballet company with an eclectic repertoire which attracted critical acclaim, numerous awards and new audiences. He created many new works for the Company, including four full-length ballets (Nutcracker, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Alice) as well as several contemporary and neo-classical pieces, and curated a broad repertoire consisting of late 20th century classic works and numerous new commissions by leading choreographers. In 2005, the Company was invited back to the Edinburgh International Festival for the first time in 20 years (which subsequently became a regular invitation) and returned to London/Sadler’s Wells for frequent visits. They also toured to China and the USA during his directorship. During his final year at Scottish Ballet, Page was commissioned to create a new work for San Francisco Ballet (Guide to Strange Places), which was premiered in March 2012 and featured in that Company’s highly successful London season six months later. Now established in the third phase of his career as a freelance choreographer and theatre director, Page is currently responding to numerous commissions from ballet, contemporary dance and opera companies internationally. In June 2014, he directed his first opera (La Bohème), and has subsequently created new productions of Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice and Bizet’s Carmen.

YURI POSSOKHOV Choreographer, RAkU
BIOS
After receiving his dance training at the Moscow Ballet School, Yuri Possokhov danced with the Bolshoi Ballet for ten years, working primarily with Ballet Master Yuri Grigorovich. During this decade, he was promoted through the ranks to Principal dancer. In 1992, he joined the Royal Danish Ballet as a Principal dancer, at the invitation of Ballet Master Frank Andersen. The following December, Possokhov was cast as Prince Desiré in Helgi Tomasson’s The Sleeping Beauty and after being invited to perform in San Francisco Ballet’s opening night gala, he moved West. In 1994, he joined San Francisco Ballet as a Principal dancer. In 1999, Possokhov organized and performed in a Russian tour entitled “Ballet Beyond Borders.” Sixteen dancers from San Francisco Ballet performed on the tour, which traveled to five cities throughout Russia. Following his retirement as a Principal dancer from the Company, Possokhov was named Choreographer in Residence in May 2006. His final engagement with the Company as a Principal dancer was on tour to New York’s Lincoln Center Festival in summer 2006. As a choreographer, Possokhov’s credits include Songs of Spain, choreographed in 1997 for dancer Muriel Maffre; A Duet for Two, created the same year for Joanna Berman; and Impromptu Scriabin, for Felipe Diaz. In 2000, he completed a new work for a dancer at the Mariinsky Ballet, as well as 5 Mazurkas for the Marin Dance Theatre. Possokhov’s Magrittomania was commissioned for San Francisco Ballet’s Discovery Program in 2000, and in April 2001, Possokhov received an Isadora Duncan Dance Award for Outstanding Choreography for the work. In 2001, Possokhov choreographed for ice dancers Renée Roca and Gorsha Sur. Works for the San Francisco Ballet include: Damned; Don Quixote; Study in Motion; Reflections; Ballet Mori; Firebird; Fusion; Diving into the Lilacs; Classical Symphony; RAkU; Francesca da Rimini; The Rite of Spring; and Swimmer. In 2004, Possokhov’s Firebird premiered at Oregon Ballet Theatre, and the following year, he created another work for the Company. In February 2006, the Bolshoi Ballet premiered his Cinderella and in February 2008, The Georgia State Ballet gave the American premiere of Possokhov’s one-act work, Sagalobeli. Possokhov returned to work with the Bolshoi Ballet in 2015, creating Hero of Our Time, a fulllength ballet based on the famous novel written by Mikhail Lermontov. For The Joffrey Ballet, Yuri has choreographed Bells, Adagio, and Don Quixote.

STAR SOCIETY PRESERVE THE LEGACY. ENSURE THE FUTURE.
THE JOFFREY VISION IS FLOURISHING. It is the feeling that we get in our theater seats when the first notes from the orchestra reach our ears as the curtain rises. It is the gift of dance, passionately performed on stage by the brilliant and athletic Joffrey dancers. It is the invaluable treasure that we will hand down to future generations. This is the legacy of The Joffrey Ballet. The Joffrey Star Society was established to recognize those individuals who have generously invested in that future, today.
If you have included The Joffrey Ballet in your estate plans or would like to learn more about our planned giving program, please contact Julia Doherty, Director of Major Gifts, at 312.386.8921 or jdoherty@joffrey.org.

Music Director SCOTT SPECK Discusses the Music for Bold Moves THE JOFFREY’S BOLD MOVES PROGRAM contains three substantial, serious musical works by important composers, two of whom are very much alive. The Sinfonia da Requiem is the largest-scale, purely orchestral piece Benjamin Britten ever composed. Concentric Paths is a virtuosic, thorny, occasionally ethereal violin concerto by the contemporary British composer Thomas Adès. And RAkU is Japanese-American composer Shinji Eshima’s evocative, hypnotic and tragic ballet score. Of the three, only RAkU was composed to accompany the dance that you will see tonight, and the only one that tells an explicit story; the other two were conceived as abstract concert works. What fascinates me is that each piece creates a new and original sound world. Benjamin Britten, writing in 1940, created an instantly recognizable language — his music sounds like nobody else’s. He drew on Latin liturgical titles, Lacrymosa (Mournfully), Dies irae (Day of Wrath) and Requiem aeternam (Eternal Rest) for his three-movement work, moving from deep sadness to violence, and finally to resolution. But there is nothing Catholic about the music itself, which seems abstractly to describe the buildup to war and its
aftermath. The Sinfonia is deeply moving, and Jir˘í Kylián’s gorgeous choreography only amplifies its impact. Thomas Adès has also created a world of sound. His music is paradoxically both tonal and dissonant. Most notable in his works are the intricate rhythms; he purposely makes it impossible to know where the beat is. His spiky, angular melodies create enormous challenges for performers, including the virtuosic violin soloist. Adès has said, “There’s a difference between impossible and difficult.” He skirts that edge here. I imagine that of all the works on this program, this is the hardest to dance to. Shinji Eshima’s music to RAkU is soothing by comparison, but it deftly depicts a sad and horrifying story. In conjuring up a legend of old Japan, he creates an ancient sound world of meditation and ritual, including the chanting of Buddhist monks.
If one thing unites all of these pieces, it’s that they are unsettled — constantly in a state of becoming, and never fully at rest. Bold moves indeed! 2015–2016 SEASON Joffrey Ballet | 39
Internationally acclaimed British choreographer Ashley Page discusses his prolific career as a dancer and choreographer, as well as his creative process.
MEET
ASHLEY
PAGE 40 | Joffrey Ballet 2015–2016 SEASON
On Dancing I started dancing when I was four and it became quite an obsessive thing. At nine, I went to a two-week summer workshop at the Legat School in Kent and was offered a six-year scholarship. But then I auditioned for The Royal Ballet School and secured a place at White Lodge (the lower school of The Royal Ballet School) and joined at age 12. The most exciting and valuable thing about my time at the school was being involved in performances at the Opera House. I remember seeing Anthony Dowell, Antoinette Sibley, Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev, and knew then that I really wanted to be a part of that world. I worked my way through the school and eventually got into the Company in 1976. On Choreography In my early years with The Royal Ballet there was a thriving choreographic workshop, and around 1981, I felt it was time to have a go, so I made my first piece. It was successful enough for me to feel emboldened to continue and in 1982, they founded the Frederick Ashton Choreographic Award, which I won. Then in 1984, I made my first piece for the Opera House, the same year I was promoted to Principal dancer. It occurred to me that if I was going to seriously choreograph I needed to get my movement language sorted out, so I decided to really strip everything down to the bare basics of classicism and re-examine it. A Broken Set of Rules, was about that paring down process and the beginnings of building it up into something else. It was quite a radical thing to present at the Opera House at that time.
I went on to choreograph alternatively for the Opera House and Rambert, as well as Dutch National Ballet. My salary was still as a performer, but I was presenting work all over, including creating 18 pieces for The Royal Ballet. Subsequently during my ten years as Artistic Director of Scottish Ballet, I created eight works including four full-length ballets; and since becoming a full-time freelance choreographer in 2012, I’ve created 14 works for companies around the world, including directing three operas. On Creative Process Music has always been my big passion, as well as the visual arts. In my creative process, music is integral and the choice of dancers is crucial. The cast is chosen to support the ideas of what I want to do with the music. The movement is found in the studio with the dancers, but I will have a strong idea about what kind of movement I want to make with a particular section of music and with which dancers, to make the most efficient use of the time. In making an abstract work, as I am now for Joffrey, the music is usually the guiding component, but I also work very closely with Jon Morrell, my long-time design partner (sketches on page 40). We talk about what the music is doing and saying, what kind of atmosphere it creates. We pull in all sorts of ideas and references (fashion, film, literature, architecture, etc.) and assemble a sort of library of things that might influence the work to dovetail with what interests us in the music. All these references on that journey and in our dialogue ultimately lead us to a clearer picture, and we make decisions based on what we feel is essential for the work.
