It is particularly appropriate that we close our 60th anniversary season with Frederick Ashton’s Cinderella. This was one of Robert Joffrey’s favorite ballets. In Cinderella, we see Joffrey’s love for exacting classical technique and a childlike sense of wonder. This is the same spirit of magic which inhabits his Nutcracker. When I was young, I believed that “magic” involved changing a pumpkin into a coach, mice into footmen, and an impoverished young girl into a princess. Magic was a transformation of common objects into spectacular ones. Now as an adult having lived a life in the arts, I understand that magic does not reside in a glass slipper, but in the human mind. We project our dreams onto a pumpkin and it becomes a coach. Initially, I feared that magic had lost its spark, that as an adult I had become jaded. Now, I realize that imagination is one of the great gifts of our humanity. We long for a world in which lowly Cinderella meets her Prince; a world just a bit kinder than the one in which we live. When this world appears on stage, we allow ourselves to believe. Robert Joffrey understood the power of the creative spirit to touch the human heart. Frederick Ashton and Robert Joffrey departed from this world during the same year, but their work remains with us as a celebration of their lives. To the power of dreams,

Ashley Wheater Artistic Director

“To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.” — Anatole France Dear Joffrey Believers — As we close our 60th anniversary season, I share sincere and profound thanks on behalf of the entire Joffrey Family with each of you — for helping us to accomplish great things, for encouraging dreaming, and most importantly, for believing. It is because of your steadfast and generous support that we continue to transform and grow. We are indeed a stronger and more vital Joffrey today because of your commitment to our mission. Whether it be the beauty and precision of the Joffrey dancers in a Cinderella performance, a learning moment in our Academy of Dance, or a Chicago Public School student discovering the power of creative expression through our commitment to community, we know that Joffrey makes Chicago a better place to live, work, learn, play, and dance. Please join me in thanking Cinderella Presenting Sponsor Margot and Josef Lakonishok and Production Sponsor Sandy and Roger Deromedi for believing in the magic of storytelling through dance and for generously supporting this production. As you leave today’s performance, I hope that you walk with a lighter step, that you reconnect with “magic,” and that you will embrace Cinderella’s virtues to “have courage and be kind.” With a focus on the future, and from the bottom of our hearts, we send thanks for your kindness and goodness to the Joffrey. Sincerely,

Greg Cameron Executive Director

SYNOPSIS

ACT I

A room in the house of Cinderella’s father

The Stepsisters are busily preparing for the court ball. Cinderella sits quietly by the fire looking at her mother’s portrait and thinks of happier times. Her father wishes to be kind, but is afraid of his badtempered stepdaughters who scold him for comforting Cinderella. Cinderella, using her broom as her dance partner, dreams of dancing with a prince at the ball, creating a lovely solo tinged with sadness and humor, a typical Ashton touch. Her dream is interrupted by a beggar woman who asks for alms. The Stepsisters send her away, but Cinderella gives her bread. The old woman leaves, giving Cinderella a kind look. Dressmakers, shoemakers, hairdressers, a jeweler, and dance master arrive to prepare the Stepsisters for the ball. All but Cinderella leave for the ball. Cinderella returns to her dreams. The old woman reappears and reveals herself as Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother. She calls on the Fairies of the Four Seasons and their attendants who bring gifts to reward Cinderella for her kindness and prepare her for the ball. Cinderella leaves in a coach escorted by the Seasons and the Stars; the Fairy Godmother warns that she must leave the ball before the clock strikes midnight or all is lost.

ACT II

A hall at the palace Courtiers move in a formal dance and a jester dances alone. Cinderella’s father and the Stepsisters arrive, as does the Prince. Mysterious music is heard. Cinderella arrives and is believed to be a princess. The Prince, enraptured, offers her three rare oranges. Prince and Cinderella, alone, declare their love. A waltz begins. Enthralled, Cinderella forgets the warning. The clock strikes midnight. Cinderella rushes from the palace, losing a slipper. The Prince holds it and vows to find the woman he loves. Synopsis continued on page 12 of the program.

BALLET NOTES 14 | Joffrey Ballet 2015–2016 SEASON

CINDERELLA — Cinderella was Sir Frederick Ashton’s first full-evening ballet for the Sadler’s Wells Ballet (which became The Royal Ballet), the first full-length ballet of the century by an English choreographer, and the first in the Western world to use the Prokofiev ballet score that had been written for the Bolshoi Ballet. With sets and costumes designed by Jean-Denis Malclès, it premiered at The Royal Opera House, London, on December 23, 1948. Cinderella, a beautiful young woman with unrecognized virtues magically redeemed from a life of oppression, has been part of the folk tradition of every culture since antiquity. Marius Petipa, the father of classical ballet, was the first to choreograph Cinderella, and it greatly influenced Ashton. Cinderella was also a subject of traditional English holiday pantomimes, with Cinderella performed by a woman and the Stepsisters’ roles by men, which Ashton brilliantly adopted for the Stepsisters, played by Ashton and Robert Helpmann. Because of injury to Margot Fonteyn, the first performances were danced by Moira Shearer, of The Red Shoes fame. Michael Somes, Fonteyn’s longtime partner, danced the Prince. His widow, Wendy Ellis, first staged Cinderella for The Joffrey Ballet in 2006, fulfilling Robert Joffrey’s dream of having the Ashton ballet in the Company’s repertoire, and she returns with her colleague Malin Thoors for this staging.

BIOS

SIR FREDERICK ASHTON Choreographer Founder and choreographer of The Royal Ballet, Sir Frederick Ashton was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, and trained under Léonide Massine and Marie Rambert. He began to choreograph in 1926 (A Tragedy of Fashion for a Hammersmith revue) and 1935 became chief choreographer of Vic-Wells (now The Royal Ballet), creating such works as Le Baiser de la fée, Les Patineurs, A Wedding Bouquet, Dante Sonata, Symphonic Variations, Scènes de ballet, Cinderella (first British full-length classical ballet), Ondine, La Fille mal gardée, The Two Pigeons, Marguerite and Armande, The Dream, Enigma Variations and A Month in the Country over a period of 50 years. He distinguished himself as a mime and character dancer in such roles as Carabosse in The Sleeping Beauty and the gigolo in Façade. He was The Royal Ballet’s principal choreographer from 1933 to 1970 and was the director from 1963 to 1970. Ashton was knighted in 1962. He died on August 18, 1988, in England.

SERGEI PROKOFIEV Composer Sergei Prokofiev was born April 23, 1891, in Sontsovka, Ukraine. His mother, who devoted her life to music, was a musical influence on young Sergei, beginning to teach him the piano at age three. He wrote his first composition when he was six, The Indian Galop. After a trip to Moscow at age eight where he was exposed to The Sleeping Beauty, Faust, and Prince Igor, he declared, “I want to write an opera.” Three or four months later, he presented his parents with The Giant, an opera in three acts and six tableau for solo piano. Prokofiev eventually was tutored by young Reinhold Glière for whom he developed a great affection, especially after he had accepted Prokofiev’s challenge to a duel with pistols. By age 12, it was decided that Prokofiev should continue his studies at a conservatory. In 1904, he was sent to the St. Petersburg Conservatory under the direction of Rimsky-Korsakov. Against the established thinking of the Conservatory, Prokofiev became a committed antiRomantic, not liking the music of Chopin and Liszt. In 1914, despite not playing one of the prescribed Classical concertos, he won the Rubenstein Prize for piano performance playing his own composition. In 1917, he produced the Violin Concerto in D Major and the Classical Symphony. He moved to the U.S. in 1918, where he was greatly discussed, somewhat admired, but little liked. The lack of success for his opera The Love of Three Oranges, commissioned by the Chicago Opera in 1921, was enough to spur his return to Europe. He went on to produce Lieutenant Kijé, Romeo and Juliet, War and Peace, and Cinderella. For more artistic bios, please refer to page 34 of the program. 2015–2016 SEASON Joffrey Ballet | 19

WENDY ELLIS SOMES Répétiteur

BIOS

Wendy Ellis was born in Blackburn, England. She trained with Peggy Wilson at the Carlotta School of Dance, later winning a British Ballet Organization scholarship. In 1963, she was selected to study at The Royal Ballet School, and moved to London with her parents to continue training. She joined The Royal Ballet in 1970 and was promoted to Soloist in 1975, then Principal in 1979. Her talent was such that when still in the corps de ballet she was dancing Princess Florine in The Sleeping Beauty, the Young Girl in The Two Pigeons and Lise in La Fille mal gardée, and later danced leading classical ballet roles such as Juliet, Aurora, Titania and Cinderella. Other roles included Fairy Spring and Autumn in Cinderella, Golden Hours in Elite Syncopations, Polka in Façade, the pas de trois and second solo in Raymonda Act III, Sunday’s Child and Tuesday’s Child in Jazz Calendar, Katia and Vera in A Month in the Country, Moyna and peasant pas de deux in Giselle, Dora Penny in Enigma Variations, Dark Elegies, the Bride in A Wedding Bouquet, Les Sylphides, My Brother, My Sister, Serenade, Monotones I, Liebeslieder Walzer, Four Temperaments and Birthday Offering. Kenneth MacMillan created Princess Stephanie in Mayerling and a role in Gloria on her and she danced in the Company premieres of Agon and Four Schumann Pieces. Margot Fonteyn invited her to dance Lise with David Wall for her 1979 BBC television series ‘The Magic of Dance,’ which included footage of rehearsals with husband Michael Somes (former danseur noble and Assistant Director of The Royal Ballet). The same year, Frederick Ashton also created a role for her in his film Stories from a Flying Trunk. After retiring in 1990, she worked closely with Somes through to 1994, staging and producing Ashton’s Symphonic Variations and Cinderella, and is now their owner and custodian. Regarded as an important link in passing down the Ashton tradition and in much demand around the world, she has since staged these ballets in Stockholm, Tokyo, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Sarasota, Salt Lake City, Boston, Amsterdam, Warsaw, Sydney, Düsseldorf and London.

MALIN THOORS Répétiteur Malin Thoors was born in Stockholm, Sweden, and began her ballet training there at the age of seven. A year later, she was selected for the Royal Swedish Ballet School and subsequently joined the Royal Swedish Ballet. She worked closely with prominent choreographers such as Cullberg, Kylián, van Manen, MacMillan, Tetley, and Skeaping, and also danced ballets by acclaimed choreographers such as Ashton, Balanchine, Bournonville, Cranko, Fokine, Limón, and Robbins.

© Linette Raven

Parallel to her dance career, Malin grew a strong desire for staging choreographic works. She moved to London where she studied Benesh Dance Notation and techniques in teaching and rehearsing under the tutelage of Monica Parker. On her recommendation, Malin was invited to The Royal Ballet in London, where she worked with choreographer and principal dancer Wayne Eagling and rehearsed eminent dancers such as Lesley Collier, Anthony Dowell, Stephen Jefferies and Jonathan Cope. With accumulated new skills, Malin was requested by the Dutch National Ballet to work with former dancers from George Balanchine’s most glorious years. She worked with Karin von Aroldingen, Bart Cook, Sean Lavery, Patricia Neary, Elyse Born and Richard Tanner, to name a few, and since this time Malin is authorized by the George Balanchine Trust to stage his ballets. Malin’s interest in staging Frederick Ashton’s works was triggered by working directly with Michael Somes and Wendy Ellis Somes. From Ashton’s repertoire she has staged Cinderella, Symphonic Variations, La Fille mal gardée, and Scènes de Ballet. In 2000, Malin was invited to work with the Paris Opera Ballet on George Balanchine’s Jewels, the success of which led Brigitte Lefèvre, the company’s artistic director at the time, to appoint her Ballet Master. For the Paris Opera Ballet, Malin has staged and worked on productions by choreographers such as Ashton, Balanchine, Bart, Carlson, Duato, Lacotte, Lifar, McGregor, Millepied, Neumeier, Nureyev and Ratmansky. After many years with the Paris Opera Ballet, she continues a career staging ballets on a freelance basis with leading companies in the world, including The Royal Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Boston Ballet, Ballet West, Dutch National Ballet, and the Australian Ballet.

ON THAT

NOTE This year marks the 125th anniversary of Sergei Prokofiev’s birth. In his honor, we perform two ballets with his music: Cinderella and Romeo & Juliet. TO GAIN MORE INSIGHT into this prolific composer, we sat down with Music Director Scott Speck.

42 | Joffrey Ballet 2015–2016 SEASON

Q. A.

Q. A.

Q. A.

Why do people love Prokofiev’s music? Prokofiev was one of the greatest musical giants of the 20th century. At a time when most “serious” composers were engulfed by atonality and serialism, he wrote tonal melodies, yet his music is spiky and astringent. He might change key three times in one tune. His accompaniments are rhythmic and fast; his instruments play at the extremes of their ranges; his patterns are irregular; his orchestral sonorities are sometimes harsh; and his otherwise “pure” harmonies are studded with “wrong notes.” The music often comes across as sarcastic, even darkly funny. Despite all that, he was capable of a simple, honest expression that can take your breath away. Our audiences are most familiar with his music from Cinderella and Romeo and Juliet. How are the scores similar or different? In Romeo and Juliet (1935), Prokofiev began to stretch the definition of melody to include tunes that we couldn’t possibly sing; the intervals are often too wide for the average human voice. In Cinderella (1944), he takes this to the next level. Most of the melodies are unsingable — but it would be a mistake to underestimate them. They just take a little longer to become familiar, before their beauty shines through. Is the Cinderella score difficult to play? It’s extremely complex. Prokofiev was a brilliant pianist, and he composed a lot of his orchestral music at the piano. To leap back and forth between octaves is relatively easy on the piano, but on many orchestral instruments, this is infinitely more difficult. Furthermore, his irregular patterns don’t let the musicians rest for a moment. It takes a superb orchestra like the Chicago Philharmonic to play Cinderella well. Musically, do you have a favorite scene in Cinderella? I have three. The first is the dancing lesson in Act I, because two of our violinists actually get to play onstage, in costume! The second is the Grand Waltz in Act II, where Prokofiev ingeniously depicts Cinderella’s growing ecstacy — until it is cruelly cut off by the stroke of midnight. And finally, I love the last moments of the score, where Prokofiev expresses simple and honest love in his exquisite setting of “And they lived happily ever after.”

2016–2017 SEASON PRE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR ASHLEY WHEATER DISCUSSES JOFFREY’S 2016–2017 SEASON

Robert Joffrey taught us to think big and think boldly. It is important that we continue to move forward. It is equally important that we cherish the classics, because they are the foundation of our language. Ballet is our foundation, but it is not the circumference of our world. When I design a season, I think of it as an artistic arc. Within a five-year period, the goal is to explore the breadth of the repertory — we want to explore the romantic, classical, and contemporary. We started by doing reimagined full-length classics with La Bayadère, Swan Lake, and Romeo & Juliet, followed by a very contemporary idea of a traditional ballet, Sylvia. We know with ballets like Romeo & Juliet and Swan Lake (the greatest classical ballet) that there is a demand to see them more than once, so we are bringing them back. Looking forward to future seasons, we will have Giselle (the greatest romantic ballet) coming back into the repertoire, as well as a brand new Anna Karenina by Yuri Possokhov.

“ ...we explore what is happening NOW in dance.” With our mixed repertory programs we explore what is happening “now” in dance. We bring Possokhov’s The Miraculous Mandarin — which premiered in Ohio this season in collaboration with The Cleveland Orchestra — to Chicago audiences; Year of the Rabbit, a brilliantly inventive collaboration between Justin Peck and musician Sufjan Stevens; and a work by Swedish phenom Alexander Ekman. Plus, the return of INFRA by Wayne McGregor, Mammatus by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, and Christopher Wheeldon’s sublimely beautiful Fool’s Paradise, this time with a full orchestra.

46 | Joffrey Ballet 2015–2016 SEASON

REVIEW Some may say that we don’t have anything traditional programmed for this year. That’s why the arc is important. The arc is for the audience and the dancers equally. We need to show a deeper understanding of choreography, but also story. I am immensely proud of this Company. These dancers are hungry to take on new challenges and they work hard to meet them at an exceptional level. To have these choreographers that are redefining our art form at the Joffrey is a mark of respect for what we are doing. The focus of next season is our new Nutcracker by Christopher Wheeldon. Undertaking a new production is no simple task. It requires copious weeks of rehearsal, which alters how we do things. Christopher will be creating a new Nutcracker on this generation of dancers for this wonderful city of Chicago. He will tell us a story that all of us can relate to. The Artistic Team — Brian Selznick, Julian Crouch, Natasha Katz, Basil Twist, Ben Pearcy — are some of the most creative minds in the theater world today. They will bring this Nutcracker to a full realization. All of us at the Joffrey are extremely excited for this new chapter in our history. It’s a beautiful way to celebrate the culmination of 60 years as a Company and 20 years calling Chicago our home. CINDERELLA FUN FACTS • The first performance of Sir Frederick Asthon’s Cinderella was performed in 1948. • In this version, the roles of the Stepsisters are performed by men. • The arrangement of steps in the ballet is called choreography (kawr-ee-OG-ruh-fee); the person who creates the steps is the choreographer.

• Pointe shoes are very hard when new, but they become very soft as a dancer wears them. In fact, a ballerina may wear out a pair of pointe shoes in just one performance!
