Traditionally, near the conclusion of ballet class, dancers perform one final sequence: a révérence. The teacher gives the combination out of respect for the art form and students respond in gratitude for what they have learned. Typically, this is an adagio, like a prayer. No one knows exactly when or where this ritual began, though it runs as a thread through ballet training across the world. We look back and say thanks. Giselle was first performed in Paris in 1841. Nearly two centuries after its creation, Giselle is performed by nearly every major ballet company in the world. The lineage includes the French original, revised choreography by Marius Petipa, a faithful staging for the Joffrey by the iconic Frederic Franklin, and contemporary versions by David Dawson, Mats Ek, and John Neumeier. Today we present Lola de Ávila’s tender adaptation of this Romantic classic. I have known Lola, as teacher and friend, for many years. She and I worked together on Giselle when we were at San Francisco Ballet. Lola is a great technician…she understands ballet and how dancers can improve their performance. But Lola’s gift is deeper, and Giselle is a perfect muse. No one is better able to “discover” these characters; to find nuance in their gestures and meaning in their movement. Like all great works of art, we return to Giselle because we see ourselves in these people. We understand longing, betrayal, and loss. We learn that love is about forgiveness rather than possession. In révérence,
Ashley Wheater Artistic Director

“The art is not one of forgetting but letting go.” — Rebecca Solnit, A Field Guide to Getting Lost
I invite you to “let go” with us at the Joffrey this season as we celebrate the artistic vision of Ashley Wheater. For the past ten years he has encouraged us to explore, discover, engage, and to dance outside of the lines. It is his leadership that has sustained us as our Chicago roots have grown deeper. I am proud to say that the Joffrey is now thriving in the great City of Chicago because of you, our stalwart supporters. Your commitment and investment in our mission makes Chicago a stronger, more resilient, and more nimble community. My sincere thanks to you and all of our sponsors including Giselle Production Sponsor JHL Capital Group. Ashley’s passion and commitment to the power of dance is unmatched — he shares from the heart and cares deeply about the myriad ways that dance changes lives. Please join me as we celebrate his Joffrey legacy — past, present, and future. From a Royal Ballet student to Joffrey Company artist to the third Artistic Director in our 60-plus year history — we shout BRAVO! Here’s to “letting go.” Warm regards,
Greg Cameron Executive Director

Ballet Notes
Giselle or Giselle ou les Wilis was first performed at the Paris Opéra on Monday, June 28, 1841, and was a success on all levels, gaining critical and public acclaim for the choreography, music, designs, and the dancing. That a ballet should have endured for over 170 years, triumphantly surviving so many vicissitudes of taste and fashion, is a sufficient tribute to its popularity and widespread appeal. There is no other ballet which in the short space of two acts offers such an immense range of expression to the ballerina; both as dancer and mime. Indeed, Giselle was and remains the supreme achievement of the Romantic Ballet. Giselle offered audiences an escape to a world of mystery, beauty, danger, and death, a vision that stirred the blood of poetic, as well as prosaic, imaginations. What secures its place at the apex of Romantic ballet is that in place of the usual happy ending, in which virtue is rewarded, a tragic death followed by a ghostly resurrection is substituted. The legend of the Wilis According to German poet Henrich Heine, the Wilis came from a Slav legend of maidens who are engaged to be married, but die before their wedding. They are unable to rest in their graves because they could not satisfy their passion for dancing when they were alive. Therefore, they gather on the highway at midnight to lure young men and dance them to their death. There is a Slav word ‘vila’ which means vampire. The plural is vile, and Wilis is likely a Germanic pronunciation of that word as a ‘w’ in German is pronounced like a ‘v.’ Throughout folklore, Wilis have been described as ghosts, witches, elves, and vampires. From Heine “Attired in their bridal dresses, with garlands of flowers on their heads, and shining rings on their fingers, the Wilis dance in the moonlight like the Elves; their faces, although white as snow, are beautiful in their youthfulness. They laugh with such a deceptive joy, they lure you so seductively, their expressions offer such sweet prospects, that these lifeless Bacchantes are irresistible.” It is commonly thought that the phrase “gave me the Wilis” comes from this legend. De Ávila’s Giselle In de Ávila’s version, there is less stationary pantomime than in most traditional versions. She wants the pantomime to be integrated into the choreography more, so the steps have meaning and it is more organic. De Ávila brings more characters into the action of the story so the whole story is being told by everyone on stage. The entire first act happens in one day from morning light to the harvest dance at dusk, and the mad scene at sunset. Act II is the night of the first full moon, which is the only night Giselle can save her beloved before she is initiated into the Wilis. *Notes compiled from The Ballet Called Giselle by Cyril W. Beaumont, program notes from Oregon Ballet Theatre, and conversations with Lola de Ávila.

Synopsis
ACT I Act I is set in the Rhineland of the Middle Ages on the day of the grape harvest festival. When the curtain rises, the cottage of Giselle and her mother Berthe is seen on one side, while opposite is the cottage of Duke Albrecht of Silesia, a nobleman whom the villagers believe is a peasant named Loys. Albrecht comes to the village in disguise before his marriage to Bathilde, the daughter of the Duke of Courland. Against the advice of his squire Wilfrid, Albrecht flirts with Giselle, who falls completely in love with him. Hilarion, a gamekeeper, is also in love with Giselle and warns her against trusting this other suitor, but she refuses to listen. Albrecht and Giselle dance, and she plucks the petals from a daisy to divine his sincerity. The couple is interrupted by Giselle’s mother, who, worried about her daughter’s fragile health, ushers the girl into the cottage. Horns are heard in the distance and Albrecht retreats from the scene. A hunting party enters and refreshments are served. Among the hunters are Bathilde and her father. Giselle is entranced by the nobility, and receives a necklace from Bathilde. When the party departs, Albrecht reappears with the grape harvesters. A celebration begins. Giselle and the harvesters dance, but the merriment is brought to a halt by Hilarion who, having investigated Albrecht’s cottage, now brandishes the nobleman’s horn and sword. Hilarion sounds the horn and the hunting party returns. When Giselle learns the truth of Albrecht’s deception, madness overwhelms her fragile heart and she dies.
ACT II Act II is set in a moonlit glade near Giselle’s grave on the night of her burial. Hilarion is grieving Giselle’s death. He is frightened from the glade by Myrtha, Queen of the Wilis, female spirits jilted before their wedding day who rise from their graves at night and seek revenge upon men by dancing them to death. Giselle is summoned from her grave and welcomed by the supernatural creatures, who then quickly disappear. Albrecht enters searching for Giselle’s grave, and her spirit appears before him. Overwhelmed by remorse and grief for the girl he grew to love, he begs forgiveness. Her love undiminished, Giselle readily forgives him. The scene ends with Albrecht in pursuit of Giselle as she disappears into the forest. (continued on page 12)

Synopsis ACT II (continued) Hilarion enters pursued by the Wilis, who throw him to his death in a nearby lake. The Wilis then surround Albrecht and sentence him to death. He begs to be spared, but Myrtha refuses. Giselle protects Albrecht from the Wilis as they attempt to dance him to exhaustion. Day breaks and the Wilis retreat to their graves, but Giselle’s love has saved Albrecht. By not succumbing to the feelings of vengeance and hatred that define the Wilis, Giselle is freed from any association with them and returns to her grave to rest in peace.

LOLA DE ÁVILA Ballet Master and Stager Lola de Ávila was trained in Zaragoza, Spain by her mother Maria de Ávila, and went on to study in Cannes, Cologne, Germany, and Paris. At the early age of 15, she made her soloist debut in the Claude Giraud Ballet, and throughout her career, performed a wide variety of repertory, including Corrida, La Sylphide, Swan Lake, Giselle, Raymonda, Sleeping Beauty, and Lifar’s Suite en Blanc. As a dancer, de Ávila performed with many companies such as the Royal Chamber Ballet of Spain, Ballet of Madrid, and Teatro de la Zarzuela. In 1978, de Ávila was named Director of the School of Victor Ullate in Brussels. In 1979, she was appointed Ballet Mistress at the National Ballet of Spain, and in 1983, she was named both Assistant to the Artistic Director and head of the school. While working at the National Ballet of Spain, de Ávila helped form the Ballet of Zaragoza. In 1989, serving as Director, she opened the Maria de Ávila Ballet School in Madrid, where she created a youth ballet. In 1990, de Ávila first taught at San Francisco Ballet (SFB) School for two weeks as part of The E.L. Wiegand Master Guest Teacher Program. The following year, she returned for a full-semester residency and in fall 1992 and accepted Artistic Director Helgi Tomasson’s invitation to serve as Associate Director for the SFB School, a position she held until September 1999. After returning to Europe, she became Director of the Maria de Ávila Ballet School in Zaragoza. From 2000 to 2002, she was Resident Ballet Mistress at Ballet de Genève. In summer 2006, de Ávila returned to serve as Associate Director of the SFB School. In 2010, de Ávila was awarded the 2010 Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts — one of the highest distinctions in the arts given by the King of Spain and the Minister of Culture. In 2011, de Ávila returned to live permanently in Spain and still serves as a guest teacher and répétiteur with SFB. On May 31, 2012, the Mayor of San Francisco declared that date “Lola de Ávila Day.”

BIOS ADOLPHE ADAM Composer French composer Adolphe Adam was born in Paris on July 24, 1803 and died there on May 3, 1856. He was the son of a musician who did his best to dissuade him from following the same career; but he was eventually allowed to enroll at the Paris Conservatoire, where he studied under Boieldieu. After helping Boieldieu to orchestrate the overture to his opera La Dame Blanche in 1825, he came to the notice of the Opera-Comique and had his first one-act opera Pierre et Catherine produced there in 1829. His brother-in-law, Francois Laporte, was Musical Director at Covent Garden and through him a couple of Adam’s works were staged there in 1832. Up to then he had written in the conventional opera-comique style, but in La Chalet (1834) he wrote what is considered to be the first true French operetta, light and frivolous with music nearer to the popular vaudeville idiom.
PETER FARMER Scenic and Costume Designer Peter Farmer has designed for most of the major ballet companies in the world, including The Royal Ballet, London Festival Ballet, London Contemporary Dance Theatre, Houston Ballet, London City Ballet, Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet, the Royal Danish Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, the Rome and Cologne Opera Houses, Stuttgart Ballet, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, New London Ballet, Ballet Rambert, Scottish Ballet, Northern Ballet Theatre, the Dutch National Ballet, the Washington Ballet, and Chicago City Ballet.

DECADE
AND COUNTING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR ASHLEY WHEATER CELEBRATES TEN YEARS WITH THE JOFFREY Judging by the results, you could argue that the ten-year union between The Joffrey Ballet and Artistic Director Ashley Wheater has been a match made in dance heaven. Which is why it’s hard to believe that it almost didn’t happen. In 2007, as the Joffrey was coming to terms with the retirement of former Artistic Director and co-founder Gerald Arpino, a shroud of uncertainty clung to the organization like a perpetual shadow. The Board of Directors diligently went to work evaluating candidates, hoping one of them might lead the Company through a decidedly delicate period in its history. Wheater, a former Joffrey dancer who was then Assistant to the Artistic Director at the San Francisco Ballet, topped the Board’s list. Did he have interest?
“I was very interested,” Wheater says. “But things were going really well [at San Francisco Ballet] and it was hard to think about leaving. I remember [the Joffrey] asked me to come back and teach. We kept the door open.” (continued on page 42)

A few guest-teaching stints later and the Board’s courtship picked up steam. So did the phone calls, one of which came from choreographer and Chicago Dancing Festival co-founder Lar Lubovitch. He implored his long-time friend to consider the job more seriously — for the sake of the Company and for the City of Chicago. By the time Wheater sat down for dinner one night with Joffrey board members Pam Strobel and Fred Eychaner, he was so charmed by their generosity and eagerness that he was rendered speechless. “I don’t know what to say — those were my exact words,” Wheater recalls. “Fred looked at me and said, Just say ‘yes’.” A decade later, as Wheater marks his tenth anniversary as Artistic Director of the Joffrey, it’s no stretch to describe his tenure as a resounding success. In his first year on the job, Wheater marshalled the Company to its new headquarters in the heart of Chicago’s downtown theater district. In 2009, he helped found the Joffrey Academy of Dance, which funnels young, prodigious talent directly to the main Company. The Community Engagement program now touches 28 schools in some of Chicago’s underserved communities, and the Company has gone from one of the country’s most revered brands to one of the most cutting-edge dance companies in the world.

The evolution was perhaps most evident in 2016, when Wheater and the Company unveiled the world premiere of Christopher Wheeldon’s The Nutcracker, a $4 million undertaking that earned widespread critical and commercial success. In many ways, the debut of Wheeldon’s Nutcracker signaled a turning point for the Joffrey, one that’s been marked by a long string of successes dating back to those first few rehearsals with the Joffrey dancers back in 2007. But if Wheater himself has a barometer for success, it’s a sense of longevity that isn’t necessarily defined by big productions or critical acclaim. He points to his relationship with the Company — where it was, where it is, where it’s going — as one of his most treasured accomplishment over the last ten years, perhaps the greatest indication that the Joffrey’s future is brighter than ever.
“I love them,” Wheater says. “Seeing their growth has been truly remarkable. It’s been wonderful to grow together.”

STAGING G When asked what her favorite ballet is, stager Lola de Ávila thinks for a second, then says, “It’s probably Giselle.” Lucky for Joffrey, the former ballerina and dear friend of Artistic Director Ashley Wheater, is somewhat of an expert on the ballet having learned all the female roles from ballet legend Anton Dolin at age 14. She’s in Chicago staging Giselle and working with the Joffrey artists on the nuances of this dramatic Romantic ballet.
“For me, everything should be very organic,” said de Ávila. “I try to make them feel organic in the Romantic style, which isn’t easy. It has to be your Giselle. If you’re faking it, it’s not the same. The challenge and what I like about it is to make it alive and real and that takes time. There is simplicity in the gestures. Sometimes less is more, but you need to really be in love.”

For de Ávila dance is a part of life. Her mother, Maria de Ávila, was a dancer and owned a ballet school. “I really don’t know when I learned to dance,” said de Ávila. “I don’t remember learning steps; it was just in my life. I didn’t make a decision that I wanted to be a dancer; it’s just what I am.” De Ávila was dancing en pointe by the age of eight, went to study ballet in Cannes and Paris at age 11, and began her professional career at of the tender age 14, when she replaced an injured dancer as the female soloist in Act II of La Sylphide. Taking daily classes with the likes of ballet stars Eric Bruhn and Rudolph Nureyev (“They would give me the opposite corrections!”) was completely normal in her world.

She also began teaching at a young age. Initially, she didn’t think she would like it, but soon found herself teaching more than she was dancing. Still in her early twenties, de Ávila found herself in a new career and loving it. “I grew Giselle by teaching Giselle. When you teach, you understand in a different way. You are capable of giving more and going deeper.” Her favorite part of the ballet is when Giselle falls in love with Albrecht (disguised as Loys) in Act I. “In that first pantomime — ‘he loves me, he loves me not’ — she goes from being flattered to being completely in love,” she said. “We must see how she almost doesn’t touch the floor. She’s so in love, she’s almost flying.”
And like any caretaker, she can’t pick just one favorite. She also cites all of the pas de deux in Act II, but clearly remembers a moment from the first time she ever saw Giselle. “The moment at the end of the first act when she runs to him and she dies… that had an impact on me. It’s like I saw it last week.” Joffrey Ballet | 47
