In December of 1987, Robert Joffrey’s vision for a new Nutcracker took the stage at Hancher Auditorium at the University of Iowa. I was fortunate to dance in that performance. Joffrey’s Nutcracker was a cherished part of his legacy for nearly three decades. Much has happened in those intervening years. In a way, the Nutcracker provided continuity as the world has changed around us. Now we have an opportunity to reimagine The Nutcracker for the twenty-first century. Nearly ten years ago, when I first became Artistic Director of the Joffrey, choreographer Christopher Wheeldon and I discussed creating a Nutcracker. From that spark, a fresh story and production have evolved. Set in Chicago during the time of the World’s Columbian Exposition, elements of the original E.T.A. Hoffmann narrative dovetail nicely with a child’s adventure at the exotic fairgrounds, complete with foreign pavilions and the raucous Midway. Perhaps more importantly, our Nutcracker tells the story of an immigrant mother and her two children, making their home in a new country. There is no choreographer better suited to discover fresh meaning within this well-known story. Christopher has assembled a brilliant team of artists to help create this magical world. We are joined by generous partners, including Margot and Josef Lakonishok, the Searle Funds at The Chicago Community Trust and once again, Hancher Auditorium, to introduce a new holiday classic, celebrating the dynamic city of Chicago, its history, and its people. Let your imagination soar,

Ashley Wheater Artistic Director

“ Sell the cookstove if necessary and come. You must see the fair.” — Author Hamlin Garland in a letter to his parents, 1893 Today I have the privilege to pen a letter to you, our valued audience, thanking you for joining us at our reimagined version of “the fair.” As a lifelong Chicagoan, I still marvel at the fact that during the six-month run of the 1893 Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition almost 27 million visitors came to Chicago — they were greeted by art, music, architecture, electricity, dance, and so much more. In fact, our performance home — The Auditorium Theatre hosted the grand historical pageant America. For the past twenty-one years, the Joffrey has called Chicago home — a city committed to innovation and the arts and a city rich with a history of story-telling. As we celebrate the history of our great city and the creativity of our Company artists (the fair had pavilions from 46 countries — our dancers represent 14 countries) through the magic of Christopher Wheeldon’s Nutcracker, I rise to my feet applauding our “Believers.” In addition to the leadership support of the Lakonishoks, the Searle Family, and the Hancher Auditorium, Ashley’s dream to commission a new Nutcracker for The Joffrey Ballet was met with enthusiasm and joy by a bountiful and generous group of “Believers.” I would ask that you take a moment to peruse the list — if you know them offer a personal “thank you” — if not, rest assured that the Joffrey Family has extended our most sincere and profound thanks and know that our commitment to access will ensure that no one will have to “sell the cookstove” to experience The Nutcracker. We wish you a holiday filled with treasured memories, magic, and merriment,

THE NUTCRACKER

It is Christmas Eve in Chicago, 1892. Workers from around the world are constructing the Columbian World’s Exposition, which will open in five months. Marie, the daughter of one of the workers, encounters a gang of boys on the construction site who show off things they’ve stolen. Marie’s younger brother Franz steals a small, red bundle from a rich boy’s sled, and a Rat Catcher terrifies Franz. Marie and Franz return to their home, a little shack where their widowed mother, a sculptress, is creating a great golden statue, which will preside over the fair. Workers from the fair and their families soon arrive at the shack with decorations, a small tree, and much food and drink. A wonderful Christmas party begins. The man who has designed and created the World’s Fair, a mysterious figure known as The Great Impresario, surprises everyone and shows up, along with his apprentice (the rich boy from whom Franz stole the red bundle earlier). The Great Impresario entertains the workers with an enchanting vision of his fair.

SYNOPSIS

He distributes gifts for everyone, but one is missing. Franz realizes it’s the red bundle he’d stolen. The Great Impresario produces it like a magic trick and gives it to Marie. She unwraps it and discovers a beautiful nutcracker inside. Just then, the Rat Catcher frightens Franz, who drops the nutcracker, breaking it. It is swiftly fixed by The Great Impresario, but the party is now winding to a close and soon everyone leaves. That night something very strange happens. Marie awakens and is shocked to see rats kidnap Franz! The Great Impresario returns, and with a wave of his hand, the little tree from the party grows until it seems to have taken over the entire world. The Nutcracker, now life-size and alive, appears from within its branches. The Rat King leads a battle against the Nutcracker. Marie distracts the Rat King and the Nutcracker kills him.

BALLET NOTES

THE NUTCRACKER — Christopher Wheeldon’s Nutcracker was conceived specifically for the great city of Chicago. When asked by Artistic Director Ashley Wheater to create a new version of the ballet, they agreed it needed to be set in Chicago, home for over 20 years to the Joffrey. Re-imagining a story as classic as The Nutcracker is always a challenge, but one Wheeldon was eager to take on. Tchaikovsky’s beloved score conjures unforgettable images in our minds, and it’s almost impossible to imagine a Nutcracker without a magical growing Christmas tree or a battle between toys and mice, but Wheeldon knew immediately there was room for his imagination to take over.

THE NUTCRACKER (continued)

BALLET NOTES

The decision was quickly made to place the ballet within the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893, which has taken on new life in popular culture as the subject of Eric Larson’s brilliant book The Devil in the White City. This mysterious, dark and magical moment in Chicago’s history seemed the perfect time and place to re-invent The Nutcracker, even though the fair only ran from May 1st to October 30th, 1893, which means it had closed by Christmastime. We realized it would be thrilling to set the ballet five months before the fair opened, in the winter of 1892, when the fairgrounds were still under construction.

BALLET NOTES 22 | Joffrey Ballet 2016–2017 SEASON

A historic image of a shack on the construction site became central to our new story, and you’ll see a version of it on stage in the ballet. This photograph also perfectly supported Wheeldon’s wish to bring in a new socio-economic plotline for The Nutcracker. Instead of the central family being wealthy and privileged, our heroine, Marie, is from a working class, immigrant family. She lives with her younger brother and her widowed mother, a sculptress working on the golden statue of the Republic. Instead of receiving luxurious and rare presents at a magnificent party in a vast house and then dreaming of even more presents and candy, our story offers a small gathering of immigrant workers coming together to celebrate the holiday with the things they have, filling the air with music and their vivid imaginations. Then, once Marie falls asleep in her shack, she dreams of what the fair will look like when it opens. The Fair itself was a kind of dream city, a vision of what could happen when the whole world comes together to show the best side of humanity in all its glorious ingenuity. So Marie’s dream coming five months before the fair opens becomes a kind of dream within a dream, which has real consequences for Marie once she wakes up.

THE NUTCRACKER (continued)

The chief architect of The World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893 was a man named Daniel Burnham, and he provided inspiration for the character of The Great Impresario. He is mysterious and magical (like Drosselmeyer in the original), and he not only serves as the imaginative force behind our version of the fair, but also comes to play a real role in Marie’s life. It’s this transformation of Marie’s life that ultimately became what was most important to this new version of The Nutcracker. While being respectful of the source material, we hope that Marie’s dream journey through the World’s Fair will illuminate what is special about all holiday stories…the value of love, the need for hope and the comfort of family, no matter where you’re from, or what type of family you have. This seems like a dream worth remembering. — Brian Selznick

Courtesy of The Joffrey Ballet.

BALLET NOTES

For anyone who has visited Epcot Center in Florida, the idea of a World’s Fair will be familiar. Countries from around the world set up vast pavilions to celebrate their native foods, arts and sciences. This provides the perfect setting for Marie’s journey in Act II as she travels throughout the Dream Fair, which depicts actual pavilions from the fair including Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show.

PYOTR (PETER) ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY Composer Pyotr (Peter) Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840–1893) composed some of the most beloved themes in all of classical music. He founded no school, struck out few new paths or compositional methods, and sought few innovations in his works. Yet the power and communicative sweep of his best music elevates it to classic status. It was Tchaikovsky’s unique melodic charm, whether in his Piano Concerto No.1 or in his ballet The Nutcracker, that could make the music seem familiar on first hearing. Tchaikovsky started piano lessons at age four and showed remarkable talent, eventually surpassing his own teacher’s abilities. At age ten, he was sent to St. Petersburg to study at the School of Jurisprudence. In 1859, he took a position as a civil servant in the Ministry of Justice, but longed for a career in music, attending concerts and operas at every opportunity. He finally began study in harmony at age 21, and enrolled at the St. Petersburg Conservatory the following year, eventually studying with the illustrious composer and pianist Anton Rubinstein. In 1866, Rubinstein’s brother Nicolai founded a new conservatory in Moscow. He invited Tchaikovsky to join him there as a Professor of Harmony. Shortly afterward, Tchaikovsky turned out his First Symphony and began a number of operas. In Moscow, Tchaikovsky also became associated with the Bolshoi Theatre, and there he composed his first ballet, Swan Lake, in 1875. Within a few years, Tchaikovsky was an established composer, beloved throughout Russia. Among his works are six numbered symphonies, three ballets, several operas including Eugene Onegin and The Queen of Spades, three piano concertos, a violin concerto, several tone poems including Romeo and Juliet, several piano and chamber pieces, and the Serenade for Strings.

NUTCRACKER

BELIEVERS

The Nutcracker is, at its heart, a story of discovery and transformation. At The Joffrey Ballet, we choose to tell stories like The Nutcracker because we believe that stories connect us to our humanity and bring us closer together. Over 100 people and organizations have chosen to believe with us, and have contributed financially to make this production of The Nutcracker possible. As we express our gratitude for their support, we would like to tell you more about a few of them. Margot and Josef Lakonishok. Photo by Dan Rest.

For decades, the Searle Funds at The Chicago Community Trust and the Searle family have made a tremendous impact on the cultural landscape in and around Chicago. Children and families from all over the region have benefitted from contributions made to world-class museums, civic organizations, and universities. “We are so pleased to extend our support to another great Chicago institution. Through performance and education programming, the Joffrey’s new production of The Nutcracker will impact thousands of young people, inspiring their creativity and encouraging them to see the world as a place of possibilities,” says Karie Thomson, Searle Family Consultant to the Searle Funds at The Chicago Community Trust.

This leadership gift to support the new Nutcracker demonstrates the collective power of philanthropy to affect change and make Chicago a better place to live, work, learn, play, and dance. The Joffrey Ballet is honored and grateful for this generous support.

PRODUCING SPONSOR HANCHER AUDITORIUM, UNIVERSITY OF IOWA

For more than forty years Hancher Auditorium at the University of Iowa has encouraged and supported The Joffrey Ballet by commissioning new works, providing much sought-after rehearsal space, and the financial resources to build the organization into the world-class company it is today. On December 10, 1987 Robert Joffrey’s The Nutcracker premiered on stage at Hancher Auditorium thanks to the generosity of the Iowa City community. Twenty-nine years later the Joffrey’s extended family in Iowa has made possible another world premiere Nutcracker by Tony Award®-winning choreographer Christopher Wheeldon. Hancher’s Executive Director Chuck Swanson has witnessed the Joffrey’s growth from a touring company who first performed in

Iowa City in 1974 to a sustainable, relevant, and critically acclaimed dance organization with roots firmly planted in Chicago. “The Joffrey has always been on the cutting edge of dance. We are delighted to have played a role in the creation of new works for this quintessentially American ballet company and know that this new Nutcracker will further Ashley Wheater’s artistic vision by showing today’s audiences how a story can be told through dance in the 21st Century,” — Chuck Swanson The Joffrey thanks Hancher Auditorium at the University of Iowa for their sustained partnership and generosity.

NUTCRACKER SPONSORS SANDY AND ROGER DEROMEDI The Joffrey Ballet is often called the "Company of Firsts," and Sandy and Roger Deromedi earned a similar premier distinction in May 2014 when they were the first donors to commit a leadership gift for the commission of a new Nutcracker for the Joffrey. Roger, a Joffrey Board Director since 2007 and Chairman of Pinnacle Foods, has been a thought leader in the Joffrey's branding, marketing, and sales evolution. Sandy and Roger recognized early on that The Nutcracker was vital to the Joffrey's fiscal health, and they were delighted to kick-off the fundraising for a new production by Tony Award®-winning choreographer Christopher Wheeldon. “Giving to The Nutcracker not only satisfies our love of dance but also helps ensure the Joffrey's future as a sustainable and relevant ballet company.” MARY JO AND DOUG BASLER When Mary Jo Basler first read the story Brian Selznick and Christopher Wheeldon dreamed of telling on stage through movement and music she knew that the Basler and Masterson Families needed to be a part of the Joffrey's reimagined Nutcracker. "As the daughter of an immigrant who grew up in Chicago surrounded by relatives, friends, and neighbors — an extended family of sorts — I felt a profound connection to this story and know many others will feel the same." Mary Jo, a Joffrey Director, has committed her life to bringing people together to make Chicago a better place to live, work, learn, and play. The Joffrey Ballet gratefully acknowledges the Basler Family for giving so generously their time, talent, and treasure.

PAMELLA ROLAND DEVOS AND DANIEL DEVOS Pamella Roland DeVos, fashion designer, philanthropist, and Joffrey Director, fell in love with dance when she was a young girl in Western Michigan. Together with her husband Dan, they have supported organizations all over the country, providing the resources for artists to create, perform, and entertain. Pamella and Dan decided to support the commission of a new Nutcracker because of the opportunities it would give to the young artists in the Joffrey Academy of Dance and Company. Pamella says she and Dan "are proud to support Ashley's artistic vision for the Joffrey because we know he cares about the art form and the artists as much as we do." The Joffrey salutes the DeVos Family for their generous support. ROSEMARIE AND DEAN BUNTROCK Rosemarie, a former Joffrey Director, and Dean have enthusiastically supported the Joffrey for over twenty years. When they learned there would be a new Nutcracker based in Chicago at the time of the 1893 World’s Fair and that Christopher Wheeldon would lead the creative team, Rosemarie and Dean knew they wanted to be a part of this special gift to Chicago. Dean, retired Chairman and CEO of Waste Management, Inc., commented “Chicago is a world-class city and it deserves a worldclass dance company. The Joffrey has helped to put Chicago on the map as a cultural destination. We applaud Greg Cameron and Ashley Wheater for their leadership.” SONIA FLORIAN Sonia Florian’s love of the performing arts is broad and deep. Ashley Wheater (pictured here with Sonia) marvels, “Sonia will travel far and wide to see dance, opera, and theater — she is one of the most fluent arts patrons I have ever met because she makes a point to see almost everything.” Sonia, a Joffrey Director since 2005, has attended and supported the Joffrey for years and thanks to her generosity each season, the company has developed into a world-class organization with extraordinary talent from fourteen countries. The Joffrey Ballet is immensely grateful for Sonia’s gift to support the new Nutcracker — a production created to highlight the athleticism and musicality of the Joffrey dancers, and to introduce the next generation of audience members to the beauty of the performing arts. 2016–2017 SEASON Joffrey Ballet | 51

NUTCRACKER SPONSORS BILL AND ORLI STALEY Orli and Bill Staley knew that Christopher Wheeldon’s Nutcracker was going to be special before a step of choreography was created. As longtime Joffrey subscribers and production sponsors (including Infra, Crossing Ashland, Maninyas, and The Miraculous Mandarin), they traveled to New York to see Wheeldon’s An American in Paris on Broadway and returned inspired to make a gift to support the commission. Orli shared, “The Joffrey’s productions are thrilling. I am taken to another place, totally swept up in the movement and music. We are happy to support the new Nutcracker so that others can experience that magical feeling.” The Joffrey salutes the Staley’s sustained enthusiasm and generous support. THE WALTER E. HELLER FOUNDATION The Walter E. Heller Foundation has been a consummate patron of arts and culture in the City of Chicago, making gifts to support artists in every discipline. When M. Catherine Ryan, the Foundation’s President, learned of the plans to create a Nutcracker for Chicago’s families she was pleased to advocate for it: “like the Foundation, the Joffrey has embraced the Chicago community and is constantly striving to move the art form and the city forward. The Walter E. Heller Foundation’s gift to support The Nutcracker is a gift to the people of Chicago, in loving memory of Alyce H. DeCosta" (pictured at left).

BRUCE SAGAN AND BETTE CERF HILL Bruce Sagan, Owner and Publisher of the Hyde Park Herald, has said “The Joffrey has been one of my great loves since we first presented them at the Harper Theater in Hyde Park in 1965, and it is a thrill to see how much the company has grown over the past decade under Ashley's artistic leadership.” The Joffrey is grateful to Bruce not only for his capstone gift which completed a two-year fundraising campaign totaling $4,000,000 for the new Nutcracker, but for his many years of dedicated leadership as a Joffrey Board Director. WOMEN'S BOARD OF THE JOFFREY BALLET Costumes for ballet require an intuitive understanding of movement and balance, and preserving their functionality has been a pressing concern for the civic leaders on the Women’s Board of The Joffrey Ballet. To safeguard the visual longevity of the production, they have collectively supported the “Women’s Board Nutcracker Costume Initiative” to maintain, clean, and repair the nearly 250 costumes for their lifetime. Patti Eylar, Women’s Board President, can attest to the power of a welldesigned costume, “all dancers have active relationships, strong ideas, and long memories about what they wear. The incredible construction and breathtaking beauty of a costume is significant.” The Joffrey is thrilled the Women’s Board collectively recognizes and supports the beauty in the small details. AUDITORIUM THEATRE OF ROOSEVELT UNIVERSITY Christopher Wheeldon’s Nutcracker celebrates the history of Chicago and as one of the city’s cultural treasures, the Auditorium Theatre, with its stunning architecture and own storied history, is perfectly suited to host this highly anticipated world premiere. Dankmar Adler and Louis Sullivan, innovators in architecture, created a magnificent theater for the people of Chicago. The Joffrey Ballet is thankful to the Auditorium Theatre for continuing their legacy of innovation by making a generous gift to support the creation of a new Nutcracker, a story about and for the people of Chicago.
