LIVING ART: LET TER OF REFLECTION

Twenty years after first arriving in Chicago, The Joffrey Ballet has become a vital part of our city’s life—where dance lives for all Chicagoans and finds new life on our stage, in our Academy of Dance, and throughout our community.

LIVING ART

JOFFREY BALLET

Inspired by Robert Joffrey’s openness to—and passion for—new, relevant, and deeply felt dance, we have always viewed ballet as a living art form. And this past year, we broke new artistic ground in front of a wider audience than ever before. Across the eight pieces we premiered and the classics we reinvigorated, the season sent our repertoire “catapulting into the 21st century,” in the words of Chicago Sun-Times dance critic Hedy Weiss. And our community responded: with the premier of Christopher Wheeldon’s Swan Lake,© this season set all-time Joffrey sales records—a reminder of the continued power and appeal of this art form today. As we now look ahead to a vibrant future for our Company, punctuated by our 2016–2017 Season world premiere of a new Nutcracker commissioned especially for Chicago, we also see a robust future for dance emerging from our Academy. This year, diverse dancers and trainees who look like our world today took home the top prize at the Youth America Grand Prix and won new acclaim at Lincoln Center. At the same time, our Academy invited all Chicagoans to experience world-class dance—whether that meant seeing new perspectives in our expanded Winning Works program or coming to Joffrey Tower to take Academy classes, which now welcome nearly 1,000 dance enthusiasts of every age. Just as importantly, we found new ways to make dance a part of every Chicagoan’s life. Under the leadership of former Joffrey dancer Erica Lynette Edwards—who took over as Director of Community Engagement this year—we expanded our in-school programs to cover all grades, Kindergarten through 12th, making the Joffrey one of the largest and most comprehensive providers of dance education in our city’s schools. And alongside the discipline and creativity these programs promote, we also brought joy throughout our neighborhoods with the groundbreaking 20 for 20! program. Anniversaries such as this mark a moment between past and future—an opportunity for reflection and an invitation to dream. Twenty years in, with our mission thriving, our Board providing all-in support, and our first-ever endowment supporting the strongest financial foundation we have ever had, The Joffrey Ballet can look ahead to a bright future as Chicago’s world-class dance leader—and it is all thanks to you. Our community makes everything we do possible—and we cannot wait to see how, together, we bring dance to life in the years ahead.

In a season infused with the expressive power of narrative dance, we told stories plucked from all over the world, from our great ballet heritage, and from the singular visions of today’s leading artists—and in the process brought dance to life for a larger, younger, and more diverse audience than ever before. Our opening performance set the stage for the season to follow. With Stories in Motion, we brought together three timeless stories in new forms: George Balanchine’s Prodigal Son, a radical retelling that has since become a classic; Lilac Garden, Antony Tudor’s dark, psychological tale of unhappy love; and the Joffrey premiere of Yuri Possokhov’s RAkU, a blistering update of Japanese folklore taken to new heights by our dancers’ athleticism. We told entirely new stories on our stage. This winter’s Unique Voices mixed repertory program spanned Johnny Cash’s gritty music, abstract dance narratives, and LED video screens, while spring’s New Works introduced audiences to Justin Peck’s beautifully crafted In Creases and the heartfelt Evenfall, by Joffrey Ballet Master Nicolas Blanc. And as we welcomed a new classic, our storytelling reached new heights— and new audiences. The Joffrey premiere of Christopher Wheeldon’s acclaimed reimagining of Swan Lake© combined “bravura technique and artful characterizations,” according to the Chicago Sun-Times, which called it “a monumental achievement on every level.” Wheeldon’s Swan Lake© set new ticket records for our Company—a sign of our artistic vitality after 20 years in Chicago. The Joffrey has always been a deeply American ballet company— bold, athletic, and relevant, with performances that speak to the people and world around us. And today, with an ensemble of breathtaking dancers who push new limits each year and a commitment to continually revitalizing our art form, our mission lives like never before.

LIVING ART: COMPANY

LIVING ART “ The Joffrey dancers meet every challenge...they are in glorious form.” — Hedy Weiss, Chicago Sun-Times, Dance Critic

Bringing new life to a classic ballet In summer 2014, a bold new vision came to life. When our Company first began rehearsing English-born, New York-based Christopher Wheeldon’s reimagined Swan Lake,© the choreographer sent our dancers a note of encouragement: “Make every gesture count. Know why you are there and who you are. Then your dancing will be the conduit for communicating a complex character in an even more complex fantasy.” Months later, he sent another note following the premiere: “It is really wonderful when a company is successful in realizing the vision of the choreographer, but what you achieved last night with your dazzling performance of Swan Lake© exceeded all my expectations.” Swan Lake© choreographer, Christopher Wheeldon.

A rich tapestry of storytelling that can only be brought to life with a company full of stars, the Joffrey premiere of Christopher Wheeldon’s Swan Lake© marked a crowning success.

In an anniversary year punctuated by new artistic achievements, the Joffrey’s first-ever performance of Swan Lake© marked a crowning success. Traditionally one of ballet’s most difficult classics, this recently reinterpreted version from a contemporary visionary required the full artistry and technical skill our Company brings today. Steeped not only in fantasy and romance, but also in history, Wheeldon’s Swan Lake© embeds the tragic story of a princess doomed to live as a swan within the elegant and rarefied world of the 19th-century Paris Opera Ballet, with sights reminiscent of Edgar Degas’ famous paintings of ballet dancers in the rehearsal studio. The scene soon shifts from history to fantasy, as a dancer portraying the Prince becomes immersed in the world of the story, before returning to Paris for a decadent gala, where top-hatted patrons lavishly wine and dine their chosen dancers in hopes of gaining personal favors behind the scenes. Wheeldon’s vast, genre-spanning, narratively intricate ballet requires stretching beyond classical boundaries with more sweeping, dramatic movements—and every dancer to emote as if he or she were in the lead role. It’s a rich tapestry of storytelling that can only be brought to full and vivid life with a company of 39 stars—like the Joffrey today. Twenty years after making Chicago our permanent home, Swan Lake© stands out as one of the most successful ballets in Joffrey history, breaking ticket sales records and bringing in younger and more diverse audiences than ever before. As Laura Mohlzan of the Chicago Tribune observed, “Witnessing our home troupe’s sensitive performance…produced a thunderclap of civic pride.”

ACADEMY

Dance lives tomorrow in those who learn it today From a child’s first lesson to a teenager who aspires to dance professionally, from Chicago and from around the world, people come to the Joffrey Academy of Dance to bring dance into their lives. Since opening our studio doors in 2009, we have grown into Chicago’s home for ballet education and one of the premier academies in the world—and our students reached new heights of performance and international acclaim this year. Named Outstanding School for the third time by the Youth America Grand Prix, the world’s largest international student ballet competition, the Joffrey Academy of Dance also saw several students win first and second prizes in this year’s classical and contemporary categories. Our Academy graduates are the faces of tomorrow’s dance companies, bringing our boldness and diversity to stages around the world and to audiences in Chicago—where they now comprise a quarter of the Joffrey’s Company.

Academy students continued to bring their talents to life for today’s audiences while pushing our art forward. On New York’s prestigious Lincoln Center stage, our trainees and newly-minted Joffrey Studio Company captivated new and larger audiences than ever, while our expanded Winning Works program at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art produced powerful new works from three ascendant ALAANA (African, Latino, Asian, Arab, and Native American) choreographers.

Even as we push forward, we lived our commitment to open Joffrey Tower to everyone who loves dance, regardless of age or ability. With more than 1,000 students in classes ranging from ballet to hip hop to tap and even yoga, this year brought more Chicagoans than ever into our studios to experience world-class dance education. And with 158 classes per week, our dance programs thrive year-round. The joy and discipline a dancer learns in a single class can last a lifetime. Only a few short years after offering its first classes, our Academy is bringing dance into hundreds of lives each year—and ensuring a vibrant future for dance across the world.

LIVING ART

Dance is a living conversation For Stephanie Martinez, dance is an ongoing conversation—between choreographers and dancers, artists and audiences—and every movement is an opportunity to draw audiences into new imaginative worlds and intimately connect them to the experiences of others. It is an art with the power to foreground new perspectives, to challenge and transform the way we see the world, and to tell stories that are not often heard or seen— including hers. Originally a contemporary dancer who began her career with River North Dance Chicago, Stephanie added ballet to her vocabulary at age 19 as a foundation for growth and exploration. Since transitioning from dancer to choreographer in 2009 with her acclaimed debut AviMar, she has rapidly emerged as a creative force in the dance world. Winning Works choreographer, Stephanie Martinez.

2015 WINNING WORKS CHOREOGRAPHERS Jennifer Archibald Abdul Latif Stephanie Martinez

The Joffrey Ballet was delighted to select Stephanie as part of our Winning Works program, created five years ago to recognize emerging ALAANA (African, Latino, Asian, Arab and Native American) artists. An opportunity to share perspectives and talents that too often go overlooked, this year’s Winning Works recognized three new choreographers and expanded to three sold-out performances at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago on March 7 and 8. Stephanie’s Winning Works piece told the story of her time as a dancer and choreographer in New York City through a series of individual relationships, building toward an open exploration of urban life and the daily pulse of the city. Yet as much as the experience was a chance to share her story, the opportunity to lead and mentor dancers proved even more meaningful for Stephanie. “It’s really important that women’s voices are heard—not just in choreography, but in everything,” Stephanie says. Ultimately, she sees a dance world that needs more diverse perspectives, particularly in leadership positions—and Winning Works as part of the solution. “ The Joffrey gave me everything I needed,” she says of her experience. “Winning Works was a launching point for me.”

Focus. Perseverance. Collaboration. Self-expression with self-discipline. When children learn to dance, they are not just memorizing steps—they are learning skills that can change their attitudes, their outlooks, their lives. In 1996, we created our Community Engagement Program to give all of Chicago’s children an opportunity to dance. And this past year, we created more opportunities for them than ever before. Nearly 600 Chicago Public School students now participate in our classes, beginning with the Lemonis Bridge Program, which introduces children to the basics of classical ballet. The new Dance Exploration program, created this year, builds on that foundation, giving students in grades 3–5 the opportunity to try Latin, jazz, African, and hip hop dance to see where their skills and interests lie. In 2014–2015, we also replicated our Middle School Dance Clubs at the high school level—our first Community Engagement Program specifically for 9th–12th grade students. With a program that now serves every grade level, we are able to create opportunities for students of all levels. We also expanded our impact beyond the classroom. More than 500 Chicago Public School students now participate in our school-based programs and students from 70 Chicagoland schools attended our student matinee performances of The Nutcracker. Our 20 for 20! program, developed to celebrate our anniversary with our community, led to new performance opportunities for students and new partnerships with community organizations across Chicago, from schools and museums to the Chicago Park District. In our 20th Anniversary year, we are fully living our vision to bring dance to people in every neighborhood of Chicago. Today, we are one of the largest dance education programs in Chicago’s schools, especially where arts programs are lean and cost is a barrier. Many students from our Community Engagement programs have been given full scholarships to the Joffrey Academy of Dance. Twenty years after the Joffrey came to Chicago, we have become more than an integral institution in the city’s art scene—we are an integral part of Chicago.

Bringing the power of dance to the people of Chicago From Buckingham Fountain to the Field Museum, family dance workshops at the Auditorium Theatre to the city’s first Halloween Gathering Parade—20 for 20! brought the power of dance to the people of Chicago. To mark our 20th anniversary in Chicago, the Joffrey undertook a citywide initiative to bring dance beyond our studios, our partner schools, and the Auditorium Theatre and into our city. Executed over the course of a year, our 20 for 20! program featured more than 20 pop-up performances, lectures, and workshops in our communities. We developed 20 for 20! to celebrate our history—but in mission, in spirit, and in practice, it represents everything we want for the Joffrey’s future.

Our identity as an American ballet company has always meant creating dance and cultivating dancers that reflect America—and 20 for 20! gave us a unique opportunity to live that mission as we partnered with organizations of all types in neighborhoods throughout Chicago. Teens from our Exelon Strobel Step-Up Program performed at the Garfield Park Conservatory, in Millennium Park, for a peace rally at Bronzeville’s K.L.E.O. Community Center, and with the Neolea Hellenic Dancers at the Field Museum’s Greeks exhibit, among many other venues. Our teaching artists held community classes at Rebuild’s Dorchester Art + Housing Collaborative and master classes at Joffrey Tower, giving adults throughout the city the opportunity to learn everything from traditional African dance to hip hop to Bollywood dance. Lectures were held at Randolph Elementary School and Harold Washington College for collegiate dance instructors to speak to interested students about what it takes to major in dance and pursue a career in the field. We developed 20 for 20! to celebrate our history—but in mission, in spirit, and in practice, 20 for 20! is everything we want for the Joffrey’s future. This is how we can make dance live in every community throughout Chicago— and it’s only the beginning.

LIVING ART: REALIZING NEW VISIONS

LIVING ART

A gift that opens a world of possibilities The language of dance is as expressive and alive as the spoken word, animating stories and characters with physicality and immediacy, making every twist and turn a dazzling display and a deeply felt experience. That unique power to tell stories with passion and athleticism is what initially captivated Josef Lakonishok. Growing up in Israel, Josef had always admired the beauty, rigor, and teamwork he saw in his favorite soccer teams. And when his wife Margot—“a sophisticated lady,” in Josef’s loving words— introduced him to ballet, he found that same power and grace drawing him in.

“ The Lakonishoks’ philanthropy opens up a world of possibilities, keeping ballet alive for audiences today and bringing the Joffrey forward on the world’s stage.” — Greg Cameron, Executive Director

The two soon began to attend performances at every opportunity, in every city they visited. Yet when he first moved to Chicago, Josef was surprised to find the Auditorium Theatre half-empty during Joffrey performances. That has all changed over the last decade, thanks to the support of donors like him and the 2007 arrival of Artistic Director Ashley Wheater. “I don’t think anybody did so much in such a short period of time as Ashley,” Josef says. “The dancers are better and stronger. The choreographers are the best in the world.” And now the Joffrey can continue to boldly advance, thanks to the generosity of donors like the Lakonishoks. In 2014, Josef and Margot made a three-year commitment to support the Joffrey’s vision of producing new, relevant, and exciting story ballets that resonate with audiences today: modern takes on the timeless stories and sweeping classics audiences have always loved. “Artistically, the support has allowed me to say, ‘Yes, we can do these things’—things that push the company forward,” Wheater says. The Lakonishoks’ philanthropy is opening up a world of possibilities: a Bollywood-inspired La Bayadère, a Romeo & Juliet set amid the war-torn swirl of fascist Italy, a Swan Lake© steeped in the glamor and politics of the 19th-century Paris Opera Ballet, and new commissions created just for Chicago. It’s a way to keep ballet alive for audiences today, and another step forward on the world’s stage for The Joffrey Ballet.
