LETTER OF REFLECTION

Dear Friends, As I look back on my time as Board Chair, it makes me proud to think about the record-setting sales numbers, the growth of the Joffrey Academy, and the invaluable contributions of our Community Engagement programs in Chicago Public Schools. But I am most proud of serving an institution with a long-standing culture of hope and optimism. The Joffrey has achieved so much and, in certain ways, changed so little, because at the heart of its success is a collective ideal that numbers can’t measure — we love dance because it elicits joy; we love art because it means hope; we love the Joffrey because it inspires both. That shared belief led to great things in 2018–2019, including the internationally acclaimed world premiere of Anna Karenina and the highest single-season earned revenue in Joffrey history. We also managed a first-time collaboration with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, highlighted by a world premiere from Stephanie Martinez, a former winner of our Winning Works competition. The Joffrey will soon embark on a new chapter as the resident dance company at the Lyric Opera House, starting in the fall of 2020. That’s a long way from where it started, and an indication of where it’s going. It’s been an honor to play a role in shaping modern Joffrey history. I can’t wait to see what’s next.

2018–2019 OPERATING RESULTS The 2018–2019 season’s world premiere of Anna Karenina resulted in The Joffrey exceeding our box office revenue goals by over $200,000, with $8 million in ticket sales. The Australian Ballet was the co-producing sponsor for this world premiere, resulting in other revenue increasing by $750,000. Giving increased to over $7.5 million, an increase of over $2 million compared to 2018. The Academy ended the year with $2.4 million in tuition earnings, an increase of 7% or $160,000, serving over 700 students and providing over $590,000 in scholarships. Community Engagement also saw program revenue grow by 44% due to the increase in the number of programs and schools served in 2019. Expenses also increased by over $2 million to over $22 million with the new production and the year ended with a deficit of $457,000 prior to depreciation. The deficit will be covered by reserves from prior year’s operating surpluses.

The Lakonishok Challenge A generous multi-year pledge from longtime Joffrey supporters Margot and Josef Lakonishok has been dedicated to establish three new Company dancer positions to the Joffrey’s roster and two additional paid work weeks to the seasonal contracts of all Joffrey artists. This year, Joffrey’s Annual Campaign — The Lakonishok Challenge — inspired hundreds of first-time Joffrey donors to give, raising over $530,000 from 350+ individual donors. The Lakonishoks’ generosity is a prime example of how enthusiastic support for an organization can become contagious and lay the path for new dance collaborations, productions, and opportunities.

Dennis D. Kendzora, a longtime subscriber and Joffrey Circle member, was among the Joffrey’s most loyal patrons. After a career in accounting at Navistar, Mr. Kendzora enjoyed his retirement by substitute teaching in Chicago Public Schools and engaging with the Joffrey Academy of Dance by sponsoring student scholarships. Upon his passing, we learned that he had named the Joffrey as the sole beneficiary of his retirement plans and stock portfolio, leaving a transformative gift of more than $1.3 million. We are humbled by Mr. Kendzora’s belief in our work and are honored to carry forth his legacy with every step we take.

WORLD PREMIERE OF ANNA KARENINA

Victoria Jaiani, Fabrice Calmels and Alberto Velazquez in Anna Karenina. Photo by Cheryl Mann.

DONORS

Bringing the World Premiere of Anna Karenina to The Joffrey Ballet stage was a momentous accomplishment that marked a new era of story ballet creation for the Company. The production received widespread acclaim and demonstrated the greatness the Joffrey is capable of today under the visionary leadership of The Mary B. Galvin Artistic Director Ashley Wheater.

SUPPORTERS Mr. and Mrs. Ronald J. Allen Greg Cameron and Greg Thompson

To realize a full-length story ballet adaptation of Tolstoy’s masterpiece required tremendous support from the community. More than 100 individuals and organizations made significant contributions to bring Anna Karenina to life. We are honored to thank the leading supporters to the right. Anna Karenina also made history by being the first production to receive funding from the newly-established Rudolf Nureyev Fund at The Joffrey Ballet. In September 2013 the Joffrey received a visionary challenge grant of $500,000 from the Rudolf Nureyev Dance Foundation to support the creation of new story ballets. By June 2015, the Joffrey had met and exceeded its campaign goal, and established its first-ever endowment with more than $1.5 million. The first draw on the Rudolf Nureyev Fund supported the creation of Anna Karenina and will bring other landmark productions to life for generations to come.

CHERYLE AND JOEL WILLIAMSON have demonstrated their passion for The Joffrey Ballet since its arrival in Chicago, and their longstanding advocacy and support have not only helped establish Chicago’s preeminent ballet company, but has lifted the reputation of the Company on a global scale. At each step in the Joffrey’s journey, Cheryle and Joel have been there to provide valuable guidance and sound leadership. From Cheryle’s service on the search committee that appointed The Mary B. Galvin Artistic Director Ashley Wheater, to aiding in the establishment of the Nureyev Endowment, and most recently, supporting live music and the creation of Anna Karenina, the Williamsons have been steadfast partners in moving the Joffrey forward.
