PROGRAM INFORMATION

LÍNEAS

Choreography | EDGAR ZENDEJAS in collaboration with the Artists Music Composition | EZIO BOSSO Lighting Design | CLAIRE CHRZAN Costume Design | MICHAEL SLACK Rehearsal Assistant | RAÚL CASASOLA

Cast | Priyana Acharya, Brian Bennett, Katharine Cowan, Diego Hoyos del Rey, Satoru Iwasaki, Rees Launer, Johanna Levie, Anna Mains, Stephen Myers, Ana Laura Pérez Várguez, Yuri Rogers, Katya Schloemann, Marin Soki, Sophia Stefanopoulos, Takuto Suzuki, Hikaru Tsubota, Joshua Van Dyke, Katelyn Vissiere Ballet Notes | LÍNEAS invokes a holistic sense of unity as human beings; while simultaneously recognizing the individuality of each other, we are, in turn, left pondering our own personal line/direction in life. It intersects with or runs the perimeter of the billions of lines (other humans and nature) with which we come into contact. — Brian Bennett, Academy Trainee

COUP DE GRÂCE

Choreography | TOMMIE-WAHEED EVANS in collaboration with the Artists Music Composition | CORY NEALE Lighting Design | CLAIRE CHRZAN Costume Design | MARTHA CHAMBERLAIN Rehearsal Assistant | RAÚL CASASOLA

Cast | Priyana Acharya, Brian Bennett, Roma Catania, Jonathan Dole, Gabrielle Girard, Rees Launer, Johanna Levie, Stephen Meyers, Emily Price, Daphne Seberich, Takuto Suzuki, Yuri Tamagawa Ballet Notes | In this piece, the audience will be peering into an apocalyptic future. In this futuristic world, our issues that present-day society is combating are magnified and unresolved, leading to a hostile living environment and disaster for the people. However, despite the peril portrayed in this work, there is a sense of hope as the dancers fight together to survive, rebel, and overcome these obstacles by embracing community and uniting as a force of one.

2019 WINNING WORKS | 3

Choreography | XIANG XU

Music Composition | ADRIANO FONTANA Lighting Design | CLAIRE CHRZAN Costume Design | LUIS RAZO Rehearsal Assistant | LUIS VAZQUEZ Cast | Tommaso Beneventi, Zachary Boresow, José Pablo Castro Cuevas, Jonathan Dole, Faith Fasoldt, Mari Fujikura, Mika Hashitani, Diego Hoyos del Rey, Shiori Ikedo, Satoru Iwasaki, Michelle Kenyon, Daniela Maarraoui, Yuri Rogers, Noah Schwartz, Lauren Shaul, Yumina Takamatsu, Miu Tanaka, Saya Tomoda, Hikaru Tsubota, Joshua Van Dyke Ballet Notes | Rice is the lifeblood of Asian culture. When it lands on our table, the rice bowl holds its energy, maintains its warmth, and binds 10,000 grains into a cohesive entity. The bowl is a boundary that embodies the togetherness with all that is inside, and the separation from all that is outside.

GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT Choreography | MARISSA OSATO

Music Composition | ELLIOT CALLIGHAN Lighting Design | CLAIRE CHRZAN Costume Design | LUIS RAZO Rehearsal Assistant | LUIS VAZQUEZ Cast | Brian Bennett, Roma Catania, Katharine Cowan, Gabrielle Girard, Jessica Humphrey, Rees Launer, Johanna Levie, Anna Mains, Emily Price, Marin Soki, Sophia Stefanopoulos, Katelyn Vissiere, Abbey Yoder Ballet Notes | Embodying expectations of what it means to be (insert label here) is exhausting. Keep up and keep to yourself. Stay relevant. And sexy. I wanted to explore the dissonance between our inner realities and the shiny facades we perform.

Osato is the co-founder/co-artistic director of Entity Contemporary Dance, an L.A.-based dance company that has taught workshops and performed original repertory in the U.S. and Asia. Osato earned an M.F.A. in Choreography from California Institute of the Arts and a B.A. in Dance and B.A. in Literary Journalism from the University of California, Irvine. Using a hybrid language of contemporary, jazz, and street dance techniques, Osato’s choreography exhibits a sense of groundedness and abandon, of rhythm and dynamism, of stillness and intimacy. As the 2017 Capezio A.C.E. Awards winners, Osato and co-director, Will Johnston, will be premiering Entity Contemporary Dance’s newest evening length work, Transparent/see, in Los Angeles this March. Osato is currently on faculty at EDGE Performing Arts Center in Hollywood, the national touring convention West Coast Dance Explosion, and Glendale College. More information can be found at marissaosato.com. Special thanks to the Joffrey for this unique opportunity, my collaborators for your creativity and dedication, my family and friends for your unwavering support and acceptance, and the 26 artists who trusted me with this work and colored it in so beautifully.
