part of the Lesser Sunda chain of islands and forms part of UNESCO World Heritage sites the Komodo National Park with other islands, Komodo Island and Padar, Gili Motang and 25 smaller ones. Located just off the western tip of Flores, about 2 hours sail from the nearest town of Labuan Bajo, the capital city of West Manggarai. Rinca Island is one of only a very few places to spot Komodo dragons in the wild and is often overlooked by tourists on their way to the more-popular Komodo Island. It is more likely to spot komodo dragons in their natural habitat on Rinca Island where there is less impact from tourism. The Island itself occupies only 123 square miles and aside from a tiny fishing village, the island is completely undeveloped. Miserably hot and dry, Rinca is also a home for other exotic and dangerous wildlife such as wild pigs, buffalos and various kinds of birds.

“

one of only a very few places to spot Komodo dragons in the wild

“

Although never a guarantee, the chances of spotting dragons in the wild are much better on Rinca than on Komodo Island, due to the more natural environment the Komodo Dragons are forced to wander around in search for food. With an addition of a little luck you may find only yourself and a park ranger - armed only with a stick - wandering the bush in search of komodo dragons. As mention above, the environment in Rinca is more natural and that makes a visit to witness the living fossil here is far more exciting. An unforgettable journey to land of the dragon.

akarta the capital city of Indonesia, sits on the northwest coast of the island of Java. A dynamic city with daunting extremes and keeps developing at a pace that throws up challenges and leaves an exotic juxtapositions on every street corner. This great city was built upon a marvelous history. Before it became the capital city of Indonesia, Batavia became the center of the Dutch East India Company’s trading network in Asia during it more than three centuries colonization on Indonesia’s soils. Monopolies on numerous natural resource such as Tea, Coffee, cloves, cinnamon and many other. These days the remains of the old Batavia still can be found all around the city, one area known as Kota Tua (The Old Town). It spans 1.3 square kilometres within North Jakarta and West Jakarta. Kota Tua is a remainder of Old Batavia, the first walled settlement of the Dutch in Jakarta area. The area gained importance during the 17th-19th century when it was established as the de facto capital of the Dutch East Indies. The area was a center of commerce due to its strategic location within the spice trade industry in the archipelago. One of the most popular historical buildings of the remains of Dutch colonialism heritage in Jakarta is Fatahillah Museum or else known as the Jakarta History Museum. Built in 1710 during the reign period of the Dutch East Indies General van Hoorn and was modeled after The Duch Royal Palace, the Dam Palace. it was functionalized for many things, instead of its main function as the center of the Dutch government. It was also used as the court, criminology, execution place, prison, trading and also usually used to hold wedding occasion. Now the building serve as a museum that house a collection of around 23,500 objects, such as the original furniture of the reign former Dutch such meeting table, lounge

chairs, filling cabinet, chamber furniture, and the painting of king Solomon is being saved on the top floor building. Around the area, various remains of the old Batavia still stand and some are reused for other purposed. Some of them are The Old Post Office build in 1928 now serve as art contemporary museum and visitor information center. Another one is The Wayang Museum with a collection of various kinds of wayang a traditional shadow puppet, such as wayang kulit and wayang golek. It also displays various collections of wayang and dolls from countries. The building occupies the site of a church which was built in 1640 under the name of the Old Dutch Church. The building of the Fine Art and Ceramic Museum was completed on January 12, 1870, and was used as the Court of Justice. During the Japanese colonization the building was used as the military dormitory and as the logistic warehouse. Now it serve as the Fine Art and Ceramic museum. If you go further south, several remains of the old Batavia can also be find and had been repurposed. Such as the Bank Indonesia Museum, it housed in a heritage building previously used as the first headquarters of the De Javasche bank, the central bank of Dutch East Indies that was established in 1828 as a circulation bank of the Dutch East Indies and was responsible in issuing Netherlands Indies Guldens. The bank continued as the acting central bank of Indonesia during the Japanese occupation in 1942 and after the Indonesian declaration of independence in 1945. Now the museum is designated to introduce the public Bank Indonesia’s role on the Indonesian history, such as monetary policies and payment system that changes over time. The museum also provide visitors with audio and visual experience on the history of currencies and trade in Indonesia 20| THE JOURNEY DEC 2015

from pre-colonial era to the present state. Another museum located next to is the Bank Mandiri Museum, once used as the first headquarters of the Netherlands Trading Society in 1913. Now it serve as a display to a collection of items related to colonial banking activities, such as security documents, numismatics (coin collections), cash counters, and safes from the colonial era. The collection is displayed in exhibits which imitate the old day’s atmosphere of the bank. And at the end of the street a beautiful large buildings stands, it is the Jakarta Kota railway station. First built in 1887 and was designated to connect Batavia with Buitenzorg, the port of Tanjung Priok, and the port of Merak near the Sunda Strait with a ferry connecting Western Java with Southern Sumatra. Later it was known as the Beos Station as an abbreviation of Bataviasche Ooster Spoorweg Maatschapij (the Batavian Eastern Railway Company). These days Jakarta Kota Station serves as a busy main central station, connecting more than 84.000 passengers daily with 844 train travels per day to all over Jakarta and Java Island. What we have mention above is just a few examples of the remains of the great city of Batavia, there are more places to visit around Jakarta that still stand as a reminder that this is once a great city and needs to be kept and developed equally to preserve its rich history that’s keep echoing from the Kota Tua to every corner of this Marvelous City, Jakarta. traditional soy product originally from Indonesia. It is made by a natural culturing and controlled fermentation process that binds soybeans into a cake form, similar to a very firm vegetarian burger patty. It originated in Indonesia, and is especially popular on the island of Java, where it is a staple source of protein and it is knwon to had appeared in the Central Javanese food pattern in the 1700s. Like tofu, tempeh is made from soybeans, but it is a whole soybean product with different nutritional characteristics and textural qualities. Tempeh’s fermentation process and its retention of the whole bean give it a higher content of protein, dietary fiber, and vitamins. It has a firm texture and an earthy flavor which becomes more pronounced as it ages. In the kitchen, tempeh is often prepared by cutting it into pieces, soaking in brine or

salty sauce, and then frying. When thin-sliced and deep-fried in oil, tempeh obtains a crisp golden crust while maintaining a soft interior—its sponge-like consistency makes it suitable for marinating. Due to it’s status in Indonesia as one of the nation favorites, various kind of tempeh based food can be found in almost anywhere. Such as the tempeh bacem, the tempeh is boiled with spices and palm sugar, and then fried for a few minutes to enhance the taste. The result is damp, spicy, sweet and dark-colored tempeh. Other than that, there are Tempeh bongkrek, Tempeh Bacem and many other. Because of its nutritional value, tempeh is now known and used worldwide in vegetarian cuisine, where it is used as a meat analogue. So find it and a have a bite of nation’s favorite, the Tempeh.
