THE HOBBITS of flores text : Timo Jurgens
I
n 2003, a discovery was made that shuck the world of paleoanthropologists. In the Liang Bua cave in Flores, Indonesia, archeologists found a odd skeleton of what appeared to be a small child. But after taking a closer look at the skull, the teeth clearly showed that the child was actually a full grown adult. Could it be that not so long ago there was another human kind? Rumors of a small human like creature roaming the island have been around for thousands of years. But no actual scientific evidence of their existence was ever found. Until a Dutch priest named Theodor Verhoeven discovered miniature tools in the Liang Bua cave in the 1960’s. The priest had a degree in archeology, and at the time he was leading several excavations in Flores. He speculated that Homo erectus from Java
8 | THE JOURNEY JUL 2015
was likely behind the making of the tools and may have reached the island around 750,000 years ago. Even though correct, his research was discounted by many other scientists and paleoanthropologists. September 6th, 2003, one of the local hired workers named Benyamin Tarus was busy excavating at the Liang Bua cave. while digging, the top of a skull began to reveal itself and two days later the complete skeleton was uncovered. The skeleton unveiled that adults of this species had extremely small brains (about the size of a grapefruit), stood only about 1 meter tall, and weighed around 30 kg. the skeleton has since been referred to as ‘’Liang Bua 1’’, and is the only semi complete specimen of a Homo floresiensis. Since the original discovery, another 9 partial skeletons were

found in the cave. The name hobbit was given by the press because the skeleton had proportionally large feet, which was not uncommon for prehistoric humans. In Africa the early humans also had large feet. However, the link to the Lord Of The Rings people ‘’Hobbits’’ was easy to make for the press. For some it is hard to believe that only 12.000 years ago, there was another human kind roaming the planet. Even the Scientists are not agreeing with one another, while some are sure it is a new species, others think it is a mere body deformity, or some sort of illness. The hobbits lived in a harsh environment, sharing the islands with the largest lizard in the world (Komodo Dragon), and Dwarf Elephants. Scientists believe animals evolve on the islands due to the isolation, and become bigger or smaller. The hobbits used to hunt dwarf elephant to survive, which was significantly larger than themselves, which gives a clear indication on the intelligence of the hobbits. Scientists believe that the Hobbits and the dwarf elephants got wiped out around 12.000 years ago by a massive volcanic eruption. Anyone that is interested in the past and the place where hobbits roamed, can visit the cave where the original discovery was made. The cave has thousands of years of history and will always be known as the cradle of floresnsiensis-kind. Timo Jurgens ; Studying tourism management at Stenden University. Spent some time doing internship in Bali.

galungaN &KUNINGA a triumphant day text : Ni Putu Fitriani
I
f you are happen to be in Bali on July 2015 then you have a chance to experience a unique cultural event, the Galungan & Kuningan. The Galungan will be held on July 15th 2015 and then followed ten days later with the Kuningan on July 25th 2015. Galungan derive from a Sanskrit word meaning a war or a fight. It symbolizing a fight between the force of good (Dharma) against the force of evil (Adharma), so the Galungan were held to celebrate the triumphant of good and a gratitude to God for its grace upon earth. During these times one thing that you will notice all around Bali is the presence of what is known as the Penjor along the street sides. The purpose of placing the Penjor is that it is serve as a media to express the Balinese Hindu’s their gratitude to the Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa (God) for His blessing. The Penjor itself are made of curved bamboo pole
12| THE JOURNEY JUL 2015
AN decorated with coconut leaves with an offering at the base, which consist of various kinds of goods that were given by God. The penjor would decorate the house front since a day before the Galungan known as the penampahan day, the day to prepare everything and it stays there until the Kuningan day. During the Galungan day, the Balinese Hindu will pray together in house temple in the morning and later in the afternoon continues together with the village people to pray in the main village temple. The next day is known as the Manis Galungan, it time for people to gather with family and feast for the triumph of the force of Good. Ten days after the Galungan, another celebration known as the Kuningan day is held. It know as the day when Gods descend to earth. Like how it was named, Kuningan is identical to yellow color as it is a symbol of wisdom.
It reminds Balinese Hindus to be wise at every moment. Every single problem should be solved wisely. People will feast on Yellow rice that was made by mixing rice and turmeric as a symbol of human gratitude to God for everything is life. The ceremony have to be held before noon, because it is believe that after noon the Gods will ascend to heaven. Make sure to mark this unique cultural event on your trip calendar and be a part of unforgettable experience. Ni putu fitriani ; Studying tourism bussines at SMK 2 a vocational school in Bangli. a Unique and Exotic traditional balinese village
PENGLIPURAN VILLAGE

P
englipuran culture village is located in Bangli region which is 45 km from Denpasar. This village is one of the tourist spot that is easy to visit, because of its location is in the main street of Kintamani Bangli. This village still upholds their traditional culture. Its nature culture can be notice when we enter the area. On Catus Pata area which is a border to enter this village. Over here, there is a village meeting community facilities and arrangement and an open outdoor yard as a welcoming symbol for the visit This village is one of the villages in Bali which has an order arrangement system from the traditional village structure. It is a combination of open space yard outdoor which still natural, so it will remain us the Balinese environment in the past. The village physical structure order basely on their traditional culture that they uphold up until present time and their community culture already exist for generation. THE JOURNEY JUL 2015

One of the best thing about this village compare with the other village in Bali is that the front houses shape are look-alike from the edge of the main village until downstream of village. The houses are order properly that the main area is located in a higher place and keep on decreasing until the downstream area. Despite of their same shape of physical look they also use the same materials in making the houses. For example they use the soil to color the wall and for the roof made from “Penyengker” and bamboo for all houses in the village. Because of its location is in the high land, the atmosphere here is very fresh. In spite of its natural park, the local people are very friendly and welcome to the visitors. A lot of tourist who dropped by can enter their houses and enjoy the scenery when the local people make handy craft, so it will be a wonderful time to spend here. This traditional culture village belongs to one of the village in Bali which held a lot of ritual activities. So there will be many activities that this village has, such as Odalan raising ceremony and Odalan lowering ceremony, Galungan etc. The right moment to visit this place is when the ritual activities held, so we can see directly its unique and it’s exclusive. Even though you can’t attend these ritual activities, you can enjoy the scenery of this village especially during the sun down, 16| THE JOURNEY JUL 2015
because at this time the local people usually go out from their houses after they had finished doing their routine activity which is from morning until the sun down. They will go out and gathered with the others, set their favorite rooster free and sometimes they do “Tajen” (a chicken match), but without putting a knife on the chicken’s leg. Meanwhile waiting for the sun down you can enjoy chicken porridge in Mr. Made retail shop which is very clean, cheap and mixed with the local people, it was an amazing experienced I will never forget for the rest of my life. visit www.alambudaya.com for more travel stories and photos of Indonesia from Barry Kusuma.

trike as the highest active volcano in Indonesia, even in South East Asia, Mt. Kerinci stays remarkable with its impressive landscape both on the top and the feet of the mountain. Exactly located in Jambi, Sumatera Island, Mt. Kerinci vaults 3,805 meters above sea level, home to the endangered species of Sumatran Tiger and Sumatran Rhinoceros.

The idea to climb Kerinci was just suddenly came through my mind. Landed at Minangkabau Airport, Padang, I went directly to Ulak Karang to catch a van to Sungai Penuh. There were 2 departures, 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Normal time takes around seven hours. The scenery along my way to Sungai Penuh was unforgettable. All the green hills, especially around Mount Kerinci, huge tea garden refreshed my eyes and my mind. How beautiful it was. There were four people in total, including me traveled from Sungai Penuh to the starting point in Kersik Tuo. I don’t know why these guys had an idea to hike at night. The 20| THE JOURNEY JUL 2015
plan was building camp in post 2. As far as I know, it’s safer to camp in shelter 1 back to the reason related to tigers. Moreover shelter 1 is already 2000 meters above sea level so no tigers. The challenging part started from shelter 1. We need to climb because it’s high and steep. Roots were used as grip. From shelter 2 to shelter 3 was crazy. The height that we need to climb is as tall as our chin. It’s cloudy, sometimes raining but not very big. The wind blew very fast when we reached shelter 3. There’s only 1 tent standing beside our tent. Time to rest. Planned to do summit attack at 4 a.m.
but in fact we started at 6.15. The sun had rise. Very nice view of the Sungai Penuh and also South China Sea. I felt worry because of the fog on the summit. I just hoped for good weather up there and also the sulfur condition was not bad. Overall the path is full of rocks and sand but not as sandy Semeru or Rinjani. At 7.45 a.m. reached Tugu Yuda and met other hikers just went down from the summit. They said it was grey up there, covered by fog. I was thinking, whatever condition up there, at least I could step on the highest land in Sumatera, I would be very happy although the view was not nice. But again,
God blessed me! 8.30 we reached, it was clear up there. And luckily the wind blew to the other side so those thick sulfur moved to the other side, not to the land we step on. The view of Gunung Tujuh Lake completed the splendid view. I was so happy and grateful that I could reach the top of the highest volcano in Indonesia, safely. Ketupat
a dish of festival
K
etupat is made from rice that has been wrapped in a woven palm leaf pouch and boiled. As the rice cooks, the grains expand to fill the pouch and the rice becomes compressed. This method of cooking gives the ketupat its characteristic form and texture of a rice dumpling. Ketupat is cut open, its skin (woven palm leaf) being removed, the inner rice cake is cut in pieces, and served as staple food, as the replacement of plain steamed rice. It usually eaten with rendang, opor ayam, sayur labu (jicama soup), sambal goreng ati (liver in sambal) or served as an accompaniment to satay (chicken or beef or lamb in skewers) or gado-gado (mixed vegetables with peanut sauce). Ketupat is also used as the replacement of plain steamed rice in gado-gado, karedok, or pecel. It also used as main ingredient in Sundanese and Javanese dish kupat tahu (ketupat, tofu, and beansprouts served in peanut sauce).
22| THE JOURNEY JUL 2015
In Java and most of Indonesia, ketupat is linked to Islamic tradition of lebaran (Eid ul-Fitr), in accordance to asking for forgiveness tradition during lebaran. The crossed weaving of palm leafs symbolizes mistakes and sins committed by human beings, and the inner whitish rice cake symbolize purity and deliverance from sins after observing Ramadhan fast, prayer and rituals.

TRADITIONAL
TRANSPORTATION
7 Klotok 6 Cikar 5
Jukung
Essentially of Balinese origin, the double outrigger small wooden canoe. It is used as a traditional fishing boat, but newer uses include “Jukung Dives”, using the boat as a vehicle for small groups of SCUBA divers. It is usually highly decorated and bear a marlin-like prow.
A small motorized boat ranging in size from a dugout to a small commercial boat, the name derive from its engine sounds which reads klotok klotok klotok. Mostly encountered in rivery regions of Kalimantan. limited by roads and rivers, makes Klotok a perfect solution.
A more traditional means of transportation, being pulled by two cows and two wheels made of wood. It is often used by farmers to raise crops from the fields toward the House, or to transport manure to be brought to the garden. Now, it’s been difficult finding cikar in Indonesia due to the modernization. 24| THE JOURNEY JUL 2015
4 Andong 3 Dokar 2 Becak 1
Cidomo
Can be considered as the icon of Lombok, this vehicle is physically similar to the dokar or andong. The main difference is instead of using wooden wheels, cidomo us a car wheel. It is a interesting transportation to explore the surrounding of the Gilis.
Similar to Dokar, Andong is also pulled by horse. What makes Andong different, it has four wheels. Andong mostly found along Malioboro Street, in Yogyakarta. Andong are also used by the Sultanese and a museum built within the Keraton that display various royal andong.
One of the traditional means of transport in Indonesia. Dokar only has two wheels and pulled by one horse. These days most of the Dokar are used as a tourism attraction and facilities around certain area, but is most of smaller town it still used as an alternate transportation.
If you visited Indonesia, especially to city like Bandung, Surabaya, Solo, or Jogjakarta, you might find a unique and most famous transportation : a carriage with three wheels which been paddled by a men who sit on the back seat. It is called Becak, a very wellknown and favorite traditional transportation in Indonesia. THE JOURNEY JUL 2015
