ocated in Lembuah village, West Lombok, about 10km east of Mataram. As one of the remains of the former glories of the Balinese kingdom’s Karang Asem in Lombok, the Narmada Park attract many tourists, both domestic and foreign. The park itself is the main attraction for tourists, having extensive gardens with numbers of pools with each own history. Narmada name, said to have originated from the word Narmadanadi, one of main

sacred rivers for Hindus in India. Narmada Park has an area of approximately 2HA. The park was built in 1727 by King of Mataram Lombok, Anak Agung Ngurah Karangasem, as an alternative venue for the Pakelem ceremony that was held every fifth full moon of Balinese calendar the Caka year (October-November). The actual ceremony was conducted in Lake Segara Anak on Mount Rinjani. It is said that the King was too old to perform the ceremony on the mountain with an elevation THE JOURNEY NOV 2015

of 3.726m, the King then ordered to build an area that resembles the Mount Rinjani in the middle of downtown to hold the ceremony. Aside from being a place of ceremony, Narmada Park is also once used as a resting place for the royals during the dry season, which features a large pool which was the place for the king and queen to swim. The water that fills the pond has also become attraction to some, because it is said that the water is from the fountain of youth. It is believed that when you wash your face with the water it will make wrinkles disappear. Research indicates that the water from the fountain in the park has a high mineral content which make it good for the skin. The unique part of this park is that the water from its fountain never runs empty even when a large amount is taken each day. Don’t forget about the other part of the Narmada Park. In addition to having a garden and pool, this park has other areas that are worth a visit, of which one is Kelasa Temple. Is named after a mountain in India, called Mount Kesala. Kelasa Temple is one of the oldest temples in Lombok. In Narmada Park there is also a place called Pentirtaan Hall, named after the Sanskrit word ‘tirta’ meaning water. Below this hall is where three streams of water from Mount Rinjani meet (Suranadi, Lingsar, and Narmada). From the fountain within this hall, water flows to the pools throughout the park. When visiting Lombok make sure to visit Narmada Park and its fountain of youth.

The Gentle Fight C

ACI is a traditional dance of Manggarai Tribe in Flores Island, East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. In the old times, caci is a part of berilka; the offering presented at the inauguration of a village. With time, since Manggaraian were farmers, caci developed into an offering of harvest celebration. And eventualy it becomes a form of celebration performance for wedding ceremonies, welcoming of officials, religious ceremonies, Independence Day and recently to welcome guests or tourists and even for exhibition to make a business. Caci comes from the words Ca and Ci. Ca means one and Ci means test. So, one definition of caci is a gentle fight one by one to prove who is right and who is wrong. When you see the dance performance you will find an unique acts, normally when people hit by a whip and got hurt they will cry or at least winced in pain but in this dance when the whip is on target the person will laugh loudly and even sing a folk song. Even though they will get hurt on this dance they still stay in harmony and peace. Caci dance is a truly unique culture, one to put on you list to see if you happen to visit Flores. Tarsisius Pente ; Born and raise in Flores, his interest in tourism he had taken him to most of tourism sights in Flores and other parts of Indonesia.

dishes, one such as the Ayam Pop. Earlier known to the local as “Ayam Populer, loosely translated as Popular Chicken. Then shorten to Pop chicken. It was originated form one of the local restaurant in Bukit Tinggi, the Family restaurant, it become so popular the other start to copying it and since then it had become an integral part of Padang cuisine. By seeing it, you would tough that it was just a simple fried chicken, visually the color itself distinctive from usual fried chicken, instead of gold brown Ayam Pop is white. Once you take a bite of it then

you’ll know why they call it Popular. An explosion of flavor hits you, a sweet tender chicken meat blends perfectly with exotic seasoning and you can barely taste the sweet coconut taste in it. What makes it different is how it was cooked; it’s not just a simple seasoned fried chicken. It was boiled with mix spices before fried. Coconut water used to boil to add more savory taste to it, and then it was added with exotic ingredients such as Garlic, shallot, key lime, Indian bay leaf, Greater Galangal and salt. It was then served with boiled cassava

leaves, yard long bean, and a sambal to complete it, be aware the sambal is Hot, so if you brave enough then try it to complete the culinary experience. If you already drooling and curious about this Ayam Pop, you don’t have to go west Sumatra or Bukit tinggi, although it would be great to taste it at its birthplace. Now Ayam pop could be found easily at most of the Padang food restaurant all over Indonesia. So this exotic culinary is worth to be added to your things to eat list while you are in Indonesia. hen people talk about Ubud mostly is about its culture, Ubud commonly known as the cultural capital of Bali. It does stand up to its title, various kind of craft can be found and made in Ubud. Even the most famous painter in Bali, Antonio Blanco choose Ubud the place for him to do all his works. It is all probably due to Ubud’s magical atmosphere and the magic secret is its natural environments. Unlike vast developed southern Bali area, Ubud manage to balance things. The nature is well preserved and maintained, one such as the Campuhan Ridge.

20| THE JOURNEY NOV 2015

Campuhan Ridge is a nature trek, it provides a great retreat from the more hectic commonly tourism sights. The hike lets you enjoy cool fresh air and probably the most gorgeous hillside vista in the region along its nine-kilometer hill track. Getting to the starting point of Campuhan ridge is relatively easy. The main access is a concrete path just down from Ibah hotel’s main entrance. Smaller letterings bears “Going to The Hill” with an arrow pointing left, and as soon as you take on this path, the verdant surroundings of the Campuhan Valley immediately come to sight, lined by dense tropical foliage. A small bridge over the revered Campuhan River leads to the majestic Pura Gunung Lebah temple complex. As you walk the path, the intricately of carved temple walls and the towering ‘meru’ tiers of the shrines visible from the path provide an exotic and cultural touch. After a few hundred meters, the view widens to reveal the vast hills that make up the valley hinterland. Slopes as far as the eye can see are an undulating sea of green, Covered in tall reed grass, which at times are harvested by the locals for thatched roofing that is typical in traditional Balinese architecture. The best time to enjoy the

Campuhan Ridge Walk is early morning and late afternoon. Passing over the lush valley of the Sungai Wos River. On clear mornings or afternoons, you can enjoy a breathtaking backdrop of Mount Agung and outlying small village houses girt by rice fields. Continuing north along the ridge the tall grass transforms into the paddies of the small village of Bangkiang Sidem. A nice Café can be found here, providing a convenient pause for refreshments or a quick bite while admiring the view. Leisure walkers may take the same trek back, while the more curious adventurous trekkers can continue west towards the outskirts of Bangkiang Sidem, down to the Sungai Cerik River then climbing up towards the hills of Payogan in the village of Kedewatan. The entire experience in Campuhan ridge Ubud completes your Ubud experience, a place where culture and nature perfectly balanced. Alinda Hartarini ; Young travel lover. “

24| THE JOURNEY NOV 2015

The main attraction to this small yet wonderful island is the Segara Anakan Lagoon, which located about 2.5 Km south of the Island. Hidden far from the lush tropical jungle, the 4 hectare Lagoon is a truly an amazing place to be. It is whrw the white sandy beach met with the calm blue ocean water, separated from the ocean because it was surrounded by rocks. Its calm water makes it a perfect place to swim and enjoy the sea, added with the quietness nuance making Segara Anakan Lagoon a perfect romantic place. To those who seek this beautiful lagoon, a trip to Sempu itself is a great adventure. It begin with a sail trip crossing the channel from Sendang Biru Beach to Teluk Semut in Sempu Island. From here, the trip continues with a two hour trekking through the dense lush jungle and steeps to reach the lagoon. Even though the trek was quite challenging,

but the beautiful sight of the lagoon and its surrounding is worth all the effort. As a Natural reserve, Sempu Island had a various ecosystems from coastal forest, mangrove forest, and tropical rain forest that dominated most the part of the island. Some exotic vegetation that can be found in the island such as the tropical almond (Terminalia catappa), Tahitian screwpine (Pandanus tectorius) and much more. Interestingly, the name Sempu itself is taken from one of the plant that can be found in the island, but it hard to find one these days. Sempu Island is also a home to several wildlife such as the Javanese Monkey (Tracypithecus auratus), deer, boar and much more. Such as some giant lizard, snakes and a few variant of Birds looking for sanctuary in the island. Something to remember, as mention earlier Sempu island is basically is a

Natural reserve under the protection of the government, a legal permit is required before entering the island. An office of the Technical Implementation Unit (UPT) of the Directorate General of Forest Protection and Nature Conservation in the region can be found at the Sendang Biru Beach, the crossing point to Sempu Island. And one more important thing to remember if you enjoy this wondrous paradise haven, please be a responsible travelers keep it clean. So what are you waiting for, pack your bag and enjoy the hidden paradise. Dewi Supartini ;a travel enthusiast, had been traveling since child with her family. She also working in one of travel agency in Bali.
