A

cold and quite dawn, the town of Ende is still asleep, a man is already riding on a back of motorcycle taxi (localy known as Ojek) struggling sleepy and cold. I am that ostentatious adventurer, I have to pierce through this chilly morning, because if I’m late I will have to wait until the next morning to enjoy the beauty of Riung’s 17 island marine parks.

The motorcycle taxi drove through the town; I could only withstand the weight of my overweight carrier and a camera bag on my lap. My destination is Ndao terminal; it is from this terminal the buses that go around cities in Flores leaves.

A trip through Flores is actualy not on my list. It just happen spontaniously while I was in Sumba Island. But then again, I always like unpredictable things such as this.

Meeting new people along the way, learning new culture and their habbits, learning from every journey, that is my purpose of traveling.

I was amazed by the view along the way, on my left side is a cliff with sea at the bottom, while on the right side is a wall of steep cliffs. Upon arrival in Ende, I was welcomed by a group of children going to school. What interesting is the vehicle they used, not a school bus but a pick-up truck?!

It is the strong will to study that moved me.

The travel to Mbay is really challenging due to the heavily damaged road and the long winding road. The good news is that there are renovations going on in several spots. Hopefully with better transportation facilities, the economy will get a good impact.

Before entering the Mbay city our eyes were spoiled by asthonising views of green hills and savanna stretch as far as eye can see, as if a beautiful fine silk carpet. It is an undoubtful beautiful natural painting. I was so busy taking pictures, seeing such a beautiful scenery all I can think of is being

The last stop for the bus is Mbay terminal. After saying good bye to the friendly bus driver I hurried get of the bus to pick up my carrier in the bus trunk. Behind this terminal is a traditional market. Then I asked the men in uniforms about information on Bemo (smaller local transport) to get me from Mbay to Riung.

Luckily after rough 10 KM, we finally get a wide smooth road. Beautiful green hills are seen on sides. But the heat is so unbearable.

Up until one point, the Bemo even have to stop and turn its engine off. The friendly driver told me to get off the car and take a picture of a beautiful hill in front of me.

After passing the beautiful mountain I eventualy fell a sleep next to the diver, as if I just slept he wake me up and the Bemo has stoped. From the place were the Bemo stop the amazing view of Riung’s 17 islands marine park is visible Upon arrival in Riung, the Bemo took me to Nirvana bungalow. There are only a few accommodations around Riung. One of it has become a favorite for foreign visitiors is the Nirvana Bungalow. Run by a friendly young 10| THE JOURNEY OCT 2015

man named Mr Rustam. It is a very simple place, with walls made of bamboo webbing.

There are no luxurious facilities in the room, only a bed and mosquito netting, complete with inside bathroom. All seems to blend in with nature.

After finishing a cup of Flores coffee as their welcome drinks in my bungalow, I hurried to prepare stuff to get into the sea.

On the harbor we are waited by the captain who will take us traveling around the islands.

He then suggests us to make a stop at Kalong Island (The Bat Island) first, and then

do snorkeling in Tiga Island and visit Rutong Island to make pictures. That is how the trip used to.

On the way to Kalong Island I was amazed by the beauty stretch in front of me.

Ocean spread with clear water, while in the distance beautiful hills complete this natural masterpiece.

Upon arrival in Kalong Island I was greet by awesome phenomenon, thousands of bats hanging on the mangrove branches.

Satisfied by this amazing view of Kalong Island, we continue our trip to Tiga Island,

the best spot for snorkeling. But my visit here is missing timed, the short tide troubling us while snorkeling due to the short visibility under the water. This island itself is interesting to be explored, but I have to hurry back due to the wheater. The view of the mainland in Riung the dark rainy cloud is seen.

We didn’t wait long to set sail to the next destination, the Rutong island. Almost every angle in the island is beautiful to be explored through the lens of my camera.

The sloping white sandy beach with its crystal clear water has its own charm. A few gazebos placed along the beach looks a bit unmaintained. But it’s comfortable to be seated while enjoying the beautiful scenery.

All seems to be so beautiful, little hills behind me seems to call me to climb on to it.

But the heat makes me cancelling the plan.

Rutong Island is a perfect place to swim and play in its nice beach.

We then head back to Riung harbor to enjoy the sunset from there. I intend to end this beautiful day with sunset view. Riung Marine Park is so beautiful, but sadly it was not well maintained. We even couldn’t find dive operator around the town. What is available is just snorkeling equipment rental. Beside that, it is very hard to get transportation to this town. If only the local government pays more attention to this place it could be much better.

S

ince the dawn of mankind on Earth the planet has changed so dramatically, caused both by Mother Nature’s relentless energy to twist, turn and flip the world’s tectonic plates, volcanoes, skies and oceans, and humans’ insatiable demand for resources. So often we hear that the only constant thing in the world is change, therefore those who survive are the ones who are able to change and adapt to new challenges.

However another constant thing in life seems too often be overlooked by most of us: the battle between good and evil. History proves how the two eternal forces always balance each other out, like yin and yang.

There is no guarantee that things would remain at one side forever. There is no guarantee that a good man would always be good, and a bad man would remain so for the rest of his life.

The same philosophy had inspired the Balinese to create a dance richly loaded with symbolism of the eternal battle between good and evil: the Barong dance.

The mythical beast – often takes shape of a lion among other less-known forms of a tiger, a boar and a dragon – is considered a protective spirit of the island, a tradition dating back from the pre-Hindu period.

A Barong is usually decorated with gilded leaves, fragments of small mirrors and voluminous dried ijuk (palm fibre) to create a formidable figure representing virtue.

On the other hand Rangda is attributed to evil spirits, instilling fear and inciting chaos among Balinese with her menacing appearance – a demonic figure with sharp nails and a long unfurled tongue. Her origin can be traced back to the time when King Udayana from the House of Warmadewa ruled Bali in the 10th century.

During his rule, the Balinese king married a Javanese princess, Gunapriyadharmapatni, from the Medang Kingdom – the same

kingdom which left magnificent 9th century temples spread across Java as its legacies.

The marriage instigated suspicions from the Balinese royal court upon their foreign consort queen’s ambition to include Bali in the realm of the Javanese kingdom.

Gunapriyadharmapatni, later known as Mahendradatta, introduced the worship of Durga, a goddess in Shaktism school of Hinduism often associated with death, in her new land. King Udayana himself later condemned his wife for practicing black magic and banished her from his kingdom.

Enraged, humiliated and disappointed, Mahendradatta then summoned all the evil spirits on the island to avenge her and kill everyone in the kingdom. Rangda, Old Javanese for widow, since then has always been associated with evil.

The Barong dance portrays the battle between Barong and Rangda including sequences where the demon queen relentlessly attempts to turn people away from virtue. The finale shows Balinese men with their keris – a traditional dagger – attempting to defeat Rangda, only to meet their own demise for the evil queen was much too powerful. Barong eventually resurrects them and expels Rangda, forcing her to flee and move to the forests on the island. A

t first glance, Taliwang Chicken looks almost like the common grilled or fried chicken, simply covered with a spicy relish. Only after tasting it, we can discern the difference. The meat is well done and very soft in texture. Both hot and sweet, it has the aroma of terasi (fermented shrimp paste), which prompts us to savor every mouthful.

Taliwang Chicken is even more appetizing when accompanied with local side dishes such as plecing (water spinach

with tomato-chili relish) and beberuk (eggplant in chili sauce) also with a nice warm rice. Ayam Taliwang can now be found in nearly all eateries in Mataram and even in some big cities all over Indonesia such as Jakarta, Surabaya and Denpasar, Bali.

A tour of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, will not be complete without tasting the local Taliwang Chicken -- Ayam Taliwang -to explore the mystery of its flavor.

Located in Batam regency, local knows it as the Barelang Bridge as an abbreviation of BA-tam RE-mpang and ga-LANG the area that was connected by the bridge. With 642 meter in length it is also known as the Habibie Bridges as the former 3rd President is the mind behind this bridge.

753 meter long bridge is located in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan. It cross the Barito River and connecting the Banjarmasin and Muarabahan City, with its unique curving construction in the middle.

MAHULU Bridge Located in Samarinda, East Kalimantan.

The 789 meter long bridges cross the Mahakam river, with elevation of 18 meters form the river surface.

BARITO Bridge

Another Bridge Located in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan. The Barito Bridge, named after the river it crossed. With 1082 meter length, it connect the city with Palangkaraya City, Middle Kalimantan.

AMPERA Bridge Serve as the icon to the Palembang City in South Sumatra, the 1117 meter long bridge cross the Musi River. The name itself had a meaning of the people’s mandate, inaugurated in 1965 by the 1st President Soekarno. It was once known as the biggest bridge in South East Asia, Its middle section once able to be lifted for a ship to pass but the since 1970 it was no longer activated.

TENGKU AGUNG SULTANAH LATIFAH Bridge This 1196 meter long bridge located in Riau Province. At the top of its two pylons a restaurant is supposed to be opened. The bridge connecting the Siak City and its neighboring district.

PASUPATI Bridge A new icon of Bandung City, West Java.

The 2147 meter long bridge is built to reduce the traffic problem in Bandung.

SURAMADU Bridge The staggering 5438 meter long bridge is known as the longest bridge in Indonesia and the third in South East Asia. It connect the capital city of East Jawa, Surabaya and its neighboring island of Madura and replacing the ferry as a medium to travel interisland.

The hidden Gem

I

ndonesia is commonly known as a tropical vacation destination, but sun and sand is not the only thing Indonesia had to offer to fulfill traveler’s curiosity.

One such as the Cool mountain breezes and the relaxing lake view of Sarangan Lake in Magetan, East Java.

Located about 100 KM from Jogjakarta or 50 KM from Solo, Sarangan Lake is a natural lake situated at the bottom of Mount Lawu with 30 Hectare of area, with 28 meter deep. The temperature is around 18 to 25 Celsius degree.

When you visit the Sarangan Lake, you will be served with a view of green and lush hill side surrounding the area, with the majestic Mount Lawu standing tall and proud in the background.

The Hill surrounding the area are filled with pine trees an area known to the local as the Cemara Sewu, a perfect place for hiking lovers to explore the refreshing pine wood.

The trek itself is relatively easy, so there is no need for a special trekking preparations to enjoy the peaceful and natural environment.

Hanging around the lake is also a nice thing to do. Aside from enjoying panorama form the lakeside, you can also find some boats or speed boats available for rent go around the lake.

Once you spent some time exploring the area, various restaurant can be easily find.

From a simple roadside stall to restaurant with international cuisine. But while you there, why bother a home cooking? It is a chance to indulge the local delicacy such as the Nasi Pecel, rice served with a vegetable salad with peanut sauce or the sweet juicy rabbit satay, a perfect pair of a nice hot food with the cool mountain atmosphere.

Several other interesting spot can be reach from the Sarangan such as the Grojogan Sewu Waterfall. The Name itself loosely translated as the thousand waterfalls, not as if it had a thousand spots 20| THE JOURNEY OCT 2015

of waterfalls but taken from an old Javanese measurement scale known as “pecak” and the height of this waterfall according to the scale is a thousand pecak.

The highest drop is just about 81 meters, to get to the bottom you will face about 2500 stairs. But it all will be paid with a breathtaking natural environment and refreshing splash of water. In this 20 Hectare are, facilities such as swimming pool, resting area with some food stalls can also be find.

All to complete your perfect place to gather around and enjoy the nature.

So if you happen to have a plan on visiting Java, a few nights in this highland resort is a nice and a perfect place to get some time away from the hustle and bustle.

An excellent place to experience the nature of Java in the relaxing surroundings of Sarangan, the hidden gem of Java.

I

ndonesia is rich with endless natural and cultural that attract travellers from all around the world, and with the most tourist attraction struggling to coup with the modernisation, while most find it hard to balance it with the culture, some manage to perfectly blend and balance, One such as Jogjakarta.

There are some places you travel just feel good immediately, the feel of welcoming and accepting, makes you feel as if you are belong to that place and for me, Yogyakarta, Indonesia was one of them.

Known locally as Jogjakarta (or, more often, simply “Jog-ja�), Yogyakarta is one of Indonesia’s mostvisited cities, in spite of its relatively small size, due to the wealth of attractions that exist in and around it.

What strikes anyone who visits is the rich cultural and artistic heritage that is imbued with all parts of this ancient Sultanate. For one, there is still a legitimate Sultan who often presides at the Kraton, or palace that lies at the heart of the city.

This ability to hold onto traditional values and maintain its cultural identity has made it Java`s premier destinations for those wishing to see and experience a slice of Indonesia.

For one, the Sultan`s palace is open to visitors, with informed and professional guides providing a fascinating insight into the daily rituals and tasks that take place at this historic site. Anyone`s first visit to the Kraton is a surprisingly peaceful one, with lovely architecture, quiet, tasteful courtyards and stunning pieces of antique art.

It is this appreciation for the arts that

has earned Yogya the title of `Soul of Java`.

But this is no mere empty tourist slogan, the old ways blend fairly seamlessly with the new. From the crumbling ancient buildings to shiny glass-fronted internet cafes and traditional markets where exotic fruits are piled high, lay only streets away from the most modern and exquisite bistro dining.

As for the artistic side; when I first visited over 4 years ago, I learned to cook in a Javanese kitchen, learned the art of creating genuine Jamu treatments, and even took part in a half-day silver-smithing course, held in the historic Kota Gede area of the city. This place has been the `silver-centre` since the 1930s, and witnessing an artisan create a bespoke piece of jewellery for a loved one is a real joy.

Yogyakarta`s soul and rich tapestry of music come together with the regular performances of Gamelan or traditional dance that take place most evenings.

After witnessing the Ramayana ballet, a classic tale of good over evil, visitors cannot help but feel enchanted by the extreme focus and dedication of the dancers as well as the peculiar and haunting live music that accompanies it.

With its relatively quiet atmosphere, decent pavements and pleasant leafy streets, Yogjakarta also has the famed Jalan Malioboro. Lined with shops, boutique outlets, batik galleries and lovely cafes, this is the place in Yogya to recover from being a tourist and enjoy some retail therapy. Many people exhausted from the bustle of Java, and weary from mountain treks find respite in the artisan gift shops and fascinating THE JOURNEY OCT 2015

A favourite past-time of many visitors to Yogya is to see first-hand, the creation of Batik. Batik is a fabric decoration that is created by wax being drawn onto fabric (in order to create a seal) before numerous layers of dye and ink are applied. There are many different styles of Batik, and each one is unique, a part from being visually arresting, they are a fascinating insight into the regions artistic heritage.

Very close to the cite lie the ruins of two of Indonesia`s most important archaeological sites. The temple at Prambanan is not only the largest of its kind in Java, it is also a stunning example of Hindu art and sculpture.

Towering stone temples dot the landscape and even at peak times, it is possible to find a spot of one`s own.

One my favourite experiences of Yogyakarta came in the form of a dawn

visit to The Buddhist temple of Borobodur.

An exquisitely designed temple, it has fast become the Buddhist heart of Indonesia.

With its multi-tiered stupa and perfectly symmetrical design, it is a miracle of modern design yet was built over 1,200 years ago.

Experiences Java as serene and enlightening as sitting and watching the sun rise over the distant volcano; each passing moment throwing the monument of Borobodur into new shades of beauty.

Within only a few hours from the city, the soaring peak of Gunung Merapi can be reached. Meaning `Fire Mountain`, few of Asia`s volcanoes are as astounding and destructive as this. With several eruptions over the past century, it has earned a place amongst only fifteen other volcanoes that have the title of `decade volcano`. This title has been given by a United Nations Disaster Relief Agency for the volcanoes consistent violence. This does not stop the intrepid however, and regular hikes to its peak are arranged from Yogya itself. For the less brave, a long walk around its base proves to be a beautiful yet solemn affair. New growth and woodland encroaches on the volcano itself, but its previous destructive force is on show for all to see. Great gashes in the earth appear where molten ash plummeted down its flank, as well as the occasional semisubmerged home. These are reminders not

only of its power, but also of the resilience of the local people, who still make a living in Merapi`s shadow.

With such an enormous selection of things to do, it is no wonder that Yogyakarta features on many travellers itinerary. With fantastic transport links all around java, and a well-connected airport, it truly is a place to visit and experience. This is reflected also in the choice on offer, from budget dorms that cater to backpackers, to finely decorated boutique hotels offering personal service.

There is something for everyone who visits the heart and soul of Java, Yogyakarta.

ndonesia is a huge archipelago consisting of thousands of islands that stretch from the westernmost point of Sabang to the easternmost point of Merauke. From Miangas island the northmost to Rote island the southmost, it spread to more than 17.508 islands with over 1 million km2 making Indonesia a massive sand box to explore. This huge archipelago is endowed with a beauty of diverse cultures and nature with distinctive flora and fauna.

There are eight major islands or island groups in this enormous chain. The largest landmasses consist of Sumatra, Java,

The smaller islands fall into two main groups: the Molluccas to the northeast, and the lesser Sunda chain east of Bali.
