W

ith an archipelago as expansive as Indonesia`s, it’s very easy to overlook whole islands. The muchvisited Java holds the sprawling capital, Jakarta, and the island paradise of Bali has attracted foreign tourism for many years. Both teem with visitors every year. Even nearby Lombok with its largely untouched interior and sweeping beaches is finally receiving the attention it deserves. But further east lies the dramatic – but still too often unvisited – landscape of the island of Flores. First discovered by the Portuguese in the 16th century, it holds an array of natural, topographical and anthropological wonders that even today are relatively unseen by tourists’ eyes. Starting with its jaw-dropping scenery,

the island is a jagged and mountainous drop of green in the ocean. Formed millions of years ago, the terrain ranges from emerald green hillside to towering cliffs from which waterfalls cascade hundreds of meters. The drive through Flores from beautiful sight to beautiful sight makes for a fantastic journey; photo opportunities are many and varied. Perhaps the best-known area on Flores is Kelimutu; a volcano containing three lakes, located in the district of Ende close to the town of Moni. These crater lakes are in the caldera of a volcano and are fed by a volcanic gas source resulting in highly acidic water. This high acidity gives different shades of colour in the lakes. When I visited, one was a dark red, another almost pitch black and the largest, a milky, emulsion-like turquoise. THE JOURNEY SEP 2015

10| THE JOURNEY SEP 2015

Many tour operators take visitors to the viewpoint before dawn to watch as the sun rises slowly over the crater, bringing with it an eerie sense of peace. I recommend staying there a while longer than the groups: there is a serene and moon-like quiet once they leave. Even photographs with the best camera do not do this experience justice. It is not just the volcanic lakes that should attract visitors. The indigenous communities have, over hundreds of years, adapted to the island’s unforgiving terrain and, as well as coffee, coconut and cashew, farmers tend enormous rice paddies made in stunning patterns. One particularly memorable design, when viewed from the mountainside, resembles a gargantuan green spider web. It is well worth hiring a driver for the day to explore outlying places. The village of Bena, for example, has plenty of examples of the ancient architecture of the indigenous people and has a fascinating cultural heritage. The stone-age megaliths are a particular highlight. Another place worth seeing is the Liang Bua Cave complex in western Flores. Back in 2004 the caves became famous around the world when paleoanthropologists discovered small skeletons that they described as a previously unknown species, Homo Floresienssis. They were named hobbits in the world’s media when the news broke and appear to have stood about 1 metre (3.3 feet) tall. The most complete individual is dated at a staggering 18,000 years old! Crafts are big in Flores and the towns around Bajawa are famed for their painstaking ikat woven fabrics. Some of these can take months to create and are traditionally made on a huge loom. The

intricate patterns depicting everyday life and wild animals of the island are the most prized but tourists seeking a genuinely beautiful reminder of their time on Flores can purchase an example at very reasonable prices The island’s fauna is also fascinating. Dragons, in particular, are a must-see. It is one of the only places in the world, apart from Komodo Island, where the Komodo dragon can be found in the wild. Less endearing, but still worth seeing, is the Flores giant rat. From nose-tip to tail-tip some specimens have been measured as up to 1.2 metres, a giant rat indeed! And it is not only terrestrial animals that you should search out. The rich marine ecosystems are home to myriad species. Scuba diving in and around the port of Labuan Bajo is not to be missed and a snorkelling trip along the north coast can often lead to swimming with dolphins and the occasional whale shark. If all this was not proof that Flores is an island worth visiting, increased tourist numbers have meant that infrastructure on the island is better than ever. Any travel agency from Bali or Lombok is very easily arranged – but, of course, with more visitors, the island’s nature is sure to be changed forever so the time to visit is now. An island to satisfy animal enthusiasts, jungle fans, hunter-gatherer experts, waterfall-jumpers or, even, just your average camera-ready picture-taker, Flores is the Bali before the tourists arrived.

against the ground and the stamping of their feet, added with the long whining of the hudoq dancers. Gives the spectators an exciting feeling and a mystical nuance. That is the scene during the performance of Hudog Dance in a Dayak tribe cultural shows,it is a kind of a thanksgiving festival for the local Dayak Tribe. In the Dayak Bahau language, hudoq means a mask. The hudoq dance performed by the Dayak Bahau community in all other villages along the Mahakam (or Mekam in the Dayak Bahau language) river basin is the same. The Bahau people believe that animals like deer, hogs, monkeys and birds bring paddy from heaven to them. The hudoq are designed to reflect these animals. The hudoq dance was intended to accompany the soul of the paddy on its journey from the house to the rice field. This annual rite must be performed in the most festive manner possible to ensure that the soul of the paddy will be pleased to stay in the rice field. The Dayak Bahau people living along the Mahakam river basin perform their hudoq ritual before the harvest in the unirrigated rice fields. During the festive time, each day a different hudoq dancer will appear. The climax of the hudoq festivity comes on the last day when all the hudoq dancers that have appeared before will again be seen. Each hudoq dance requires different masks and accessories. In the Suh Doh hudoq, for example, the inheritor of a hudoq will have to harvest one kilogram of paddy from the rice field and keep it inside a piece of bamboo before the rite is performed. The hudoq rite will be performed for this paddy and at the end of the rite, the paddy will be distributed to the entire audience. Later, this paddy will be mixed with paddy seedlings that will be

planted in the rice fields in the next year. Hudoq performers are usually the people staying in the village where a hudoq rite is performed. The only hudoq that can be performed by guests or by dancers from other villages is the Hakaai hudoq dance. When a hudoq dance is performed, masks depicting pests in a rice field such as a monkey, a rat, a hog, a deer and a sparrow will also emerge to entertain the audience. The hudog dance ritual serve an expression gratitude from the people for the blessing that had been granted to them. A custom that had been pass down from one generation to the next one, as a precious heritage to preserve. Alinda Hartarini ; Young travel lover. CIVETcoffee KO P I LU WA K

K

opi Luwak or civet coffee is widely noted as the Most Expensive Coffee in The World. The history of Kopi Luwak itself began in the early 18th century when the Dutch established the cash – crop coffee plantations in the island of Java and Sumatra. At that time, coffee is only consumed by the Dutch since they prohibited the native farmers and plantation workers from picking coffee fruits for their own use. But the needs to drink coffee have made them to collect the coffee seed form the civet droppings and processed it till they found that it has a very rich taste. it didn’t took long for it to become the Dutch owners favorite too. Now more and more people looking for Kopi Luwak after being discussed in tv show and some movie scenes. Coffee luwak has a thick texture and has a rich and heavy flavor. Now, it can easily found in coffee bar or café all over the world. It is served in special way and the price is very expensive for a glass of coffee. In the world the price may reach US$ 700 per kilogram. Kopi Luwak is made from the Arabica and robusta beans of coffee berries which have been eaten by Asian Palm Civet then passed through its digestive tract. These little mammals live in the trees and one of their favorite foods is the red and ripest coffee cherries. After coffee cherries eaten by a civet it takes about a day and a half in the civet’s

digestive tract before being defecated in clumps. The civet’s stomach acid and enzymatic action involved in this unique fermentation process produces the beans for the world’s rarest coffee beverage. The coffee farmers will collect the droppings, cleaned; sun dried, roasted and ground the coffee before delivers to the market. The world’s largest regional producer of Kopi luwak is the island of Sumatra which spread in Lampung, Bengkulu, and Aceh. But, it also can be found other island such as Java, Bali, and Sulawesi. In some agro tourism object you may see how this rarest coffee beverage produces, from being eaten by the civet till it ground and served as coffee with strong flavor and lack of bitterness. so, while in Indonesia, why don’t you try this special coffee?

s the gentle waves of Belitung rocked the small wooden boat we were riding in, I wondered what one does exactly during island hopping. “Just chill,” answered one of my travel companions, a Puerto Rican-Brazilian-American boy. It turned out that he was only half right. We did master the art of chillin’, but more importantly, we discovered the importance of seizing the moment. When you see a white-sand island so tiny you can circle it in five minutes: stop and hop! Our first stop at 8.30 in the morning, Pulau Pasir, sparked our enthusiasm so much we couldn’t help but jumped high in the air in the excitement of a five-year-old on a sugar rush. Not a problem, really, since the sand has a real trampoline quality being so fine and soft. But seriously, who could help not getting thrilled upon seeing big, pink starfishes so akin to Patrick of the Sponge Bob series lay innocently at the shoreline – sometimes with not-so-innocent translucent stinging jellyfishes floating nearby? When you arrive in front of a tall, rusty lighthouse: climb all the way up! Pulau Lengkuas, our next stop, was

the only inhabited small island among the ones sprinkled in the area. It’s the home of an old lighthouse, which had provided comfort and guidance to the sailors of the yesteryear. It’s also the most popular among the small islands sprinkled in the area, therefore it is also the most crowded one. As you can’t indulge with the billionaire with a private island feeling here, you might as well spend your time in the lighthouse. Although the staircase was rickety, your persistence and bravery will be sweetly rewarded once you’re on top. Have you ever known so many shades of turquoise? When your boatman asked whether you’d like to have some coconut: say yes and follow him! We never thought that enacting the offer means climbing rapidly with his bare hands up the slim, slippery, graciously tall coconut trees. Or that the coconut would taste unlike any other you’ve had before: sweet, tingling, almost like an alcoholinduced concoction. When you think it’s possible to swim across two islands: do it! With several pre-cautions, of course. First, get an okay from your boatman. Although the sea looks very well-behaved, there may be some unknown nasty under current lurking. Second, grab your goggles. And last, have some company – it will boost your spirit beyond measures during the journey and helpful to look out for

jellyfishes. Now, four members of our group can proudly boast that we have swum across the sea from Pulau Babi to Pulau Aji. How many of us can actually say that? And later in the evening, when you noticed how brilliant the stars are: grab a blanket and star-gaze well into the night! Not only were we lucky enough to have the beach with the best sunset in Belitung right in front of our wooden cottage, it also has thick, soft, cushiony sand ideal for an outdoor mattress. It was a perfect dessert after our bonfire dinner, to lay low and try to think whether we’ve seen better starlit sky. To quote the peculiar poetry of Incubus, ‘the sky resembles a backlit canopy, with holes punched in it’. Wait, what does it have to do with seizing the moment, you ask? Pulau Pasir was gone, completely submerged by noon, when we passed it on our way to another island. Had we postponed our hop there, we would have missed it altogether. I must confess, I did not go all the way up to the lighthouse and had regretted it ever since. And the night after, the sky was too cloudy and the stars had gone into hiding. Horatius was wrong. Carpe diem, seize the day, is not enough. We must also seize the moment! visit www.thedustysneakers.com for more travel stories and photos of Indonesia from Maesy Angelina.

It is a documentary of a two young surfers around the world in search of the perfect wave, and ends up finding quite a few in addition to some colorful local characters and here in Bali we got the complete packages, beach and culture. When you think about a beach side resort in Bali, the two all time favorite Kuta and Sanur beach must have popped up in your mind. Some may say Kuta is too crowded or Sanur is too touristy, well if you are among those who also thinks like that then Canggu could be place on your escape plan. place by means of private villas being built, there is still the ability to enjoy some wonderful scenery. It’s a quiet and tranquil place where you’re more likely to be woken up by the roosters than any late night revelers. It is probably like seeing Kuta in its early days, circa 1970. you can see and feel the blending of beautiful natural surrounding and an undergoing development, but all in a perfect balance. For instance, on the favorite restaurant among the tourist is a modern set up restaurant, but yet it still surrounded by lush bushes and rice fields. The area is popular among the surfers and you’re not likely to see a scooter that doesn’t have board racks attached to it. Thousands of people flock here to catch waves and enjoy the affordable lifestyle that Bali offers. As for the beach, some the famous one

Nelayan Beach or Fishing village beach, You’ll see numbers of jukungs (traditional boat) pulled up onto the top of the sand dune with little storage shacks straight behind them. There’s not much happening here through the day, but early morning it can get pretty busy. Nelayan is less of a surfing beach and there’s plenty of sand if you just want to lay around. Berawa Beach, the prima donna among the wave seekers in Bali. Surfers come to seek its great wave, powerful and challenging to every surfer to conquer and enjoy the surfing adventures. Pantai Batu Mejan or famously known
