As a vast country Indonesia’s tourism treasures are scatterd all over the Islands. Some sights such as Bali, Lombok, and Java already on the top list, leaving some under the spot lights.

One such as the Kakaban Lake in Kalimantan (Borneo), such a wonderous place. One of the only two place in the world where you can find a stingless jellyfish, being Isloated hundreds of years, these jellyfish had lost it’s predatory insting. The sight of large number of jelly fish and beeing able to swim with it is trully a wonderous feeling.

R

ecently, i was returned to my hometown in Surabaya, the historical city that was be a center of region of East Java. For me, Surabaya with the Old Town and all the colonial buildings are already familiar. But, Maruf my friend, a madurese man told me about the unique culture in his hometown.

I chose a trip to Madura because my curiosity when Maruf told me there is a cow beauty contest in Madura. Especially now easier to reach the Madura Island, no need to ride a ferry to crossing the sea again. By paying 30 thousand rupiah’s for one car, we can pass the Bridge that connected the island of Java. The 5 kilometers long Suramadu Bridge, the longest and biggest in Indonesia. Just about ten minutes while enjoying the beauty of the greatest and longest bridge in Indonesia we arrive on island of salt.

But, Madura Island in East Java is not only known as a producer of salt, but also producing cows good quality for race. Most of the people in Madura Island, assume that the cow was a part of THE JOURNEY SEP 2014

indigenous culture of madurese. Because of that, Madurese held great event once a year. That called a Karapan Sapi (bull-races) and Sapi sono (cows beauty contest).

Karapan Sapi is a symbol of prestige that can raise the dignity of the Madurese, because the cow have a very good quality with the special treatment as well for race. An expensive cost of course. Racing is done by a pair of bulls are ridden by a jockey. Typically, this traditional ceremony be held in September until October at the final of the presidential race trophy in Sumenep and Pamekasan district. Cows that received the trophy, could reach 75 million dollars for the price.

Besides held a Karapan Sapi, madurese is also have a tradition were to beautify cows for competed on venue like a models, they called Sapi Sono. There are twenty-four pairs of cows from various ages, they decorated like a beauty queen with attractive makeup. from red velvet cloth and also yellow, wood carving 10

In the contest, the jury assess not only from the ideal body weight, as not skinny or not too fat, shiny skin, has a good eye and a horn. The other value is harmony of motion and compactness of cow foot steps that accompanied by saronen music.

In a show of Sapi sono always combined with the accompaniment of musical arts saronenan, a Madura typical music from bugle sounds. Saronen musician group also decorated with colorful uniforms.

The atmosphere adds a sense of tradition magical heritage on there.

Due to the high cost of the treatment, an owner of cows from Sumenep, Mohamad Aziz had told me about his favorite cow named Artist Safari. He took care of the cows from childhood to successfully win the contest twice. “The cows are like my wife. The high cost of treatment of cows and gifts we received when winning is not balanced. But this is pride, “he said.

In the past, the villagers had a social gathering habits of the cow owner so-called ‘lotrengan’. Well, that’s where they get together and show off each cow. This habit gradually evolved into sonok Cow Contest.

A

part of the Lesser Sunda chain of islands and forms part of UNESCO World Heritage sites the Komodo National Park with other islands, Komodo Island and Padar, Gili Motang and 25 smaller ones. Located just off the western tip of Flores, about 2 hours sail from the nearest town of Labuan Bajo, the capital city of West Manggarai.

Rinca Island is one of only a very few places to spot Komodo dragons in the wild and is often overlooked by tourists on their way to the morepopular Komodo Island. It is more likely to spot komodo dragons in their natural habitat on Rinca Island where there is less impact from tourism.

The Island it selves occupies only 123 square miles and aside from a tiny fishing village, the island is completely undeveloped. Miserably hot and dry, Rinca is also a home for other exotic and dangerous wildlife such as wild pigs, buffalos and

various kinds of birds.

Although never a guarantee, the chances of spotting dragons in the wild are much better on Rinca than on Komodo Island, due to the more natural environment the Komodo Dragons are forced to wander around in search for food. With an addition of a little luck you may find only yourself and a park ranger armed only with a stick - wandering the bush in search of komodo dragons.

As mention above, the environment in Rinca is more natural and that makes a visit to witness the living fossil here is far more exciting.

ali as the world famous tourism destination also known as one of the best dive site in the world, and one of it is Tulamben. Located on the northeast coast, about two to three hour drive from Kuta or Denpasar and now days can be reach by various transportation services.

The town’s name is derived from the word batulambih, which roughly translates as “many stones”, a reference to the destructive eruptions

by Mount Agung that have affected this part of Bali from time to time. The beach in Tulamben is not made of sand, but is entirely covered

with fairly large, smooth stones. The modern name evolved over time, first to “Batulamben” and finally settling on the contraction Tulamben (“batu” means “stone” in Indonesian).

What make Tulamben become one of the most popular dive sites on Bali is the presents of a US Army ship wreck, the Liberty. A US Army Transport ship lies just off shore.

On January 11th, 1942, shortly after the United States entered World War II, the 6,211-ton vessel was on route from

Australia to the Philippines, carrying a cargo of railway parts and rubber for the war effort. At approximately 19 km southwest of the Lombok Strait, the USAT Liberty Glow was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine.

A US destroyer called the USS Paul Jones and Dutch destroyer HNLMS Van Ghent, towed the damaged ship in the direction of Singaraja, a Dutch port on the north coast of Bali. However the USAT Liberty was taking on so much water that she was beached on the East Coast THE JOURNEY SEP 2014

Balinese village of Tulamben in an effort to save her cargo and fittings - she remained there for the next 21 years.

The wreck lies in shallow water and is considered appropriate for divers of all certification levels, some shallow area also good for fun snorkeling. The ship rests in 30 metres of water, is roughly 25 metres from shore and can be reached with a short swim from the beach. The highest point of the wreck tops out about 5 meters from the surface.

The 1963 eruption of Mt. Agung, which devastated much of the eastern side of Bali, drove the ship into the water just off shore, where it became encrusted with coral and a home to other sea life.

In addition to a wide variety of corals and invertebrates on the wreck itself, large fish frequent the wreck in some seasons, most popularly Mola mola and whale sharks, as well as Black-tip reef sharks. Professional divers have praised 16

local residents for minimizing local fishing activity.

As for accommodation, there is a wide selection of hotels in the area and more are appearing all the time. Most visitors are here to have a real feeling of village community. The pace of life is very slow and relaxed here in Tulamben. So aside from diving, Tulamben is also a perfect place to just sit down, grab a coconut and enjoy one of the most amazing places in Bali.

ne of the most famous sight in Derawan islands. The island is located in Berau Regency, East Kalimantan Province. When you touch down on Kakaban you will be greeted by a fairly long pier and an entrance gate.

On the gate and written in Indonesian is a welcome message that translates as something like this: “Welcome to the Tourism Attraction Kakaban Island, Berau Regency.�

I remember it was almost lunchtime as I walked down the long pier. Though my tummy rumbled for food, the beautiful view of Kakaban island couldn’t be missed.

I took a while walking along the pier and admiring the beauty of Kakaban island.

The real highlight though was hidden in the shaded lake at the centre of the Island; thousands of stingless jellyfish!

To get onto the island we had to pass through a small gate and pay a registration fee. Then you walk along a wooden bridge that leads to the forest and eventually to the Kakaban Lake It’s a 300 meter walk with great views of the forest under the dappled shade of the trees. (please always remember to be extra careful when you are climbing up or descending down the wooden bridge or stairs as it is really slippery, especially when it is in wet. I 20

almost fell on the way back from the lake to the jetty).

Exiting the forest, I sat down at the pier on the lake. The water was brackish and as I looked closer I saw the water was slightly spotted by a lot (maybe thousand) of jelly fish. I remember I felt a bit hesitant to swim in the lake, because of just how packed it was with jellyfish. I convinced myself that they are stingless and they looked cute, too!

I saw some friends jump into the water and having fun! It took less than five minutes before I finally plucked up the courage to join them. In no time at all I was drowning with excitement playing with the cute stingless jellyfish. I was totally amazed by them!

Though I read that there are four different types of Stingless jellyfish in

Kakaban Lake, I only saw three types. At least I think so! Two of them were spread out throughout the lake. One type were greeny-brown and bulbous. They were the most busy, swimming here and there. The other type were Cassiopea (upside-down jellyfish), which I saw a lot down at the bottom of the lake. They might have been taking a nap!

Kakaban Island is beautiful, the mangroves forest is amazing, but the highlight of the trip is definitely the stingless jellyfish. You should try to visit by yourself, swimming surrounded by alot jellyfish. Please remember not to wear your flippers when you snorkel in Kakaban lake, it seriously will straight away kill the jellyfish when you accidently kick them with your flippers.

Tempeh Indonesian Nutritional Powerhouse

traditional soy product originally from Indonesia. It is made by a natural culturing and controlled fermentation process that binds soybeans into a cake form, similar to a very firm vegetarian burger patty. Tempeh is unique among major traditional soy foods in that it is the only one that did not originate from the Sinosphere cuisine.

It originated in today’s Indonesia, and is especially popular on the island of Java, where it is a staple source of protein.

Like tofu, tempeh is made from soybeans, but it is a whole soybean product with different nutritional characteristics and textural qualities.

Tempeh’s fermentation process and its retention of the whole bean give it a

higher content of protein, dietary fiber, and vitamins. It has a firm texture and an earthy flavor that becomes more pronounced as it ages. Because of its high nutritional value, tempeh is used worldwide in vegetarian cuisine, where it is used as a meat analogue. tempeh is often prepared by cutting it into pieces, soaking in brine or salty sauce, and then frying.

Cooked tempeh can be eaten alone, or used in chili, stir-fries, soups, salads, sandwiches, and stews. Tempeh’s complex flavor has been described as nutty, meaty, and mushroomlike.

There are various other ways to serve tempeh, so be sure to add this in to your culinary list on your visit to Indonesia.

THINGS TO DO IN THE THREE GILIS

WAtchING the sun set

Head to the west side of the island you are staying on, find a spot in the sand or a chair in a beach bar and watch the sun paint the sky orange as the sun sets behinds Bali’s Mount Agung. On Gili Trawangan there are two popular sunset bars about half and hours walk or 10 minutes on bike from the pier (head south along the coast road), where people gather for a drink before the sunsets.

Party under the stars

Nightlife on the Gili Islands used to be restricted to only Monday, Wednesday and Friday, but these days the island seems to come alive every night. Head to the liveliest stretch on the coast road and let the music guide you to the party.

Get a good look of the Gili islands, Bali and Lombok from the highest point on Gili Trawangan. The hill is located on the southern end of the island and can be reached within half an hour from most places on the southern half of Gili Trawangan.

One of the major attractions on the Gili islands is Scuba diving and with more than 20 different dive sites around the islands there is something for everyone. Swim with sharks and turtles, go for a drift dive or explore the Gilis underwater life.

TAKE A massage or spa treatment

If you have been climbing Mount Rinjani your body definitely deserves a massage, but it might feel just as well after a day on the beach. Several resort and villas offer massages on the grounds, but you can also find salons dedicated to all kind of traditional massages, pedicures, and treatments.

Bike around the island

You can bike around any of the three Gili islands in less than an hour, but if you bring swimwear and snorkeling equipment and take time splash in the water a tour along the coast road can turn into a day trip. Remember to bring water.

Lobster, shrimp, tuna, mahi mahi, snapper or squid, pick your favorite among the many seafood’s available on the Gili islands.

Explore the Gili islands from a sea kayak. If you are lucky you might end up paddling with manta rays or sea turtles next to you.

Snorkel with sea turtles

The Gili islands do a great job in preserving sea turtles – if you visit Gili Trawangan you can’t miss the hatchery, right on the main beach. If you are in one of the right spots - ask someone local where that is – you can spot sea turtles when snorkeling right of the beach. Swimming in crystal clear water with a sea turtle is the perfect way to spend an afternoon. Remember to respect the turtles and don’t touch them.

ndonesia is a huge archipelago consisting of thousands of islands that stretch from the westernmost point of Sabang to the easternmost point of Merauke. From Miangas island the northmost to Rote island the southmost, it spread to more than 17.508 islands with over 1 million km2 making Indonesia a massive sand box to explore. This huge archipelago is endowed with a beauty of diverse cultures and nature with distinctive flora and fauna.
