History of Easter Christian and Pagan Traditions Interwoven The history of Easter reveals rich associations between the Christian faith and the seemingly unrelated practices of the early pagan religions. Easter history and traditions that we practice today evolved from pagan symbols, from the ancient goddess Ishtar to Easter eggs and the Easter bunny. Easter, perhaps the most important of the Christian holidays, celebrates the Christ's resurrection from the dead following his death on Good Friday. . . a rebirth that is commemorated around the vernal equinox, historically a time of pagan celebration that coincides with the arrival of spring and symbolizes the arrival of light and the awakening of life around us.

Dyed eggs are given as gifts in many cultures. Decorated eggs bring with them a wish for the prosperity of the abundance during the coming year. Folklore suggests that Easter egg hunts arose in Europe during "the Burning Times", when the rise of Christianity led to the shunning (and persecution) of the followers of the "Old Religion". Instead of giving the eggs as gifts the adults made a game of hiding them, gathering the children together and encouraging them to find the eggs.

Green Eggs and Ham???

Ostara, Goddess of Spring and the Dawn (Oestre / Eastre)

The meat that is traditionally associated with Easter is ham. Though some might argue that ham is served at Easter since it is a "Christian" meat, (prohibited for others by the religious laws of Judaism and Islam) the origin probably lies in the early practices of the pagans of Northern Europe.

Easter is named for a Saxon goddess who was known by the names of Oestre or Eastre, and in Germany by the name of Ostara. She is a goddess of the dawn and the spring, and her name derives from words for dawn, the shining light arising from the east. Our words for the female hormone “estrogen derives from her name.

Chocolate Easter bunnies and eggs, marshmallow chicks in pastel colors, and candy of all sorts . . . these have pagan origins as well! To understand their association with religion we need to examine the meaning of food as a symbol.

Ostara was, of course, a fertility goddess. Bringing in the end of winter, with the days brighter and growing longer after the vernal equinox, Ostara had a passion for new life. Her presence was felt in the flowering of plants and the birth of babies, both animal and human. The rabbit (well known for its propensity for rapid reproduction) was her sacred animal. Easter eggs and the Easter Bunny both featured in the spring festivals of Ostara, which were initially held during the feasts of the goddess Ishtar / Inanna. Eggs are an obvious symbol of fertility, and the newborn chicks an adorable representation of new growth. Brightly colored eggs, chicks, and bunnies were all used at festival time to express appreciation for Ostara's gift of abundance.

History of Easter Eggs and Easter Candy

The history of Easter Eggs as a symbol of new life should come as no surprise. Eggs, in ancient times in Northern Europe, were a potent symbol of fertility and often used in rituals to guarantee a woman's ability to bear children. To this day rural "grannywomen" (lay midwives/healers in the Appalachian mountains) still use eggs to predict, with uncanny accuracy, the sex of an unborn child by watching the rotation of an egg as it is suspended by a string over the abdomen of a pregnant woman.

The ancient belief that, by eating something we take on its characteristics formed the basis for the earliest "blessings" before meals (a way to honor the life that had been sacrificed so that we as humans could enjoy life) and, presumably, for the more recent Christian sacrament of communion as well. Shaping candy Easter eggs and bunnies out of candy to celebrate the spring festival was, simply put, a way to celebrate the symbols of the goddess and the season, while laying claim to their strengths (vitality, growth, and fertility) for ourselves.

The Goddess Ostara and the Easter Bunny Feeling guilty about arriving late one spring, the Goddess Ostara saved the life of a poor bird whose wings had been frozen by the snow. She made him her pet or, as some versions have it, her lover. Filled with compassion for him since he could no longer fly (in some versions, it was because she wished to amuse a group of young children), Ostara turned him into a snow hare and gave him the gift of being able to run with incredible speed so he could protect himself from hunters. In remembrance of his earlier form as a bird, she also gave him the ability to lay eggs (in all the colors of the rainbow, no less), but only on one day out of each year. Eventually the hare managed to anger the goddess Ostara, and she

cast him into the skies where he would remain as the constellation Lepus (The Hare) forever positioned under the feet of the constellation Orion (the Hunter). He was allowed to return to earth once each year, but only to give away his eggs to the children attending the Ostara festivals that were held each spring. The tradition of the Easter Bunny had begun. The Hare was sacred in many ancient traditions and was associated with the moon goddesses and the various deities of the hunt. In ancient times eating the Hare was prohibited except at Beltane (Celts) and the festival of Ostara (Anglo-Saxons), when a ritual hare-hunt would take place. In many cultures rabbits, like eggs, were considered to be potent remedies for fertility problems. The ancient philosopher-physician Pliny the Elder prescribed rabbit meat as a cure for female sterility, and in some cultures the genitals of a hare were carried to avert barrenness. In later Christian tradition the white Hare, when depicted at the Virgin Mary's feet, represents triumph over lust or the flesh. The rabbit's vigilance and speed came to represent the need to flee from sin and temptation and a reminder of the swift passage of life. And, finally, there is a sweet Christian legend about a young rabbit who, for three days, waited anxiously for his friend, Jesus, to return to the Garden of Gethsemane, not knowing what had become of him. Early on Easter morning, Jesus returned to His favorite garden and was welcomed the little rabbit. That evening when the disciples came into the garden to pray, still unaware of the resurrection, they found a clump of beautiful larkspurs, each blossom bearing the image of a rabbit in its center as a remembrance of the little creature's hope and faith.

Ishtar, Goddess of Love, and the First Resurrection (also known as Inanna) Ishtar, goddess of romance, procreation, and war in ancient Babylon,

was also worshipped as the Sumerian goddess Inanna. One of the great goddesses, or "mother goddesses", the stories of her descent to the Underworld and the resurrection that follows are contained in the oldest writings that have ever been discovered. . . the Babylonian creation myth Enuma Elish and the story of Gilgamesh. Scholars believed that they were based on the oral mythology of the region and were recorded about 2,100 B.C.E. The most famous of the myths of Ishtar tell of her descent into the realm of the dead to rescue her young lover, Tammuz, a Vegetation god forced to live half the year in the Underworld. Ishtar approached the gates of the Underworld, which was ruled by her twin sister Ereshkigel, the goddess of death and infertility. She was refused admission. Similar to the Greek myths of Demeter and Persephone that came later, during Ishtar's absence the earth grew barren since all acts of procreation ceased while she was away. Ishtar screamed and ranted that she would break down the gates and release all of the dead to overwhelm the world and compete with the living for the remaining food unless she was allowed to enter and plead her case with her twin. Needless to say, she won admission. But the guard, following standard protocol, refused to let her pass through the first gate unless she removed her crown. At the next gate, she had to remove her earrings, then her necklace at the next, removing her garments and proud finery until she stood humbled and naked after passing through the seventh (and last) gate. In one version, she was held captive and died but was brought back to life when her servant sprinkled her with the "water of life". In the more widely known version of the myth, Ishtar's request was granted and she regained all of her attire and possessions as she slowly reemerged through the gates of darkness. Upon her return, Tammuz and the earth returned to life. Annual celebrations of this "Day of Joy", were held each year around the time of the vernal equinox. These celebrations became the forerunners of the Ostara festivals that welcomed Oestre and the arrival of spring. A section on the Goddess Inanna (the Sumerian version of the Goddess Ishtar), her myths and symbols, is included with the myths of the goddesses at this website. Easter eggs, the Easter Bunny, the dawn that arrives with resurrection of life, and the celebration of spring all serve to remind us of the cycle of rebirth and the need for renewal in our lives. In the history of Easter, Christian and pagan traditions are gracefully interwoven.

Made Simple

Part Two next month!

Having a Baby: Pregnancy and Birth The administrative details you need to know if you are giving birth in Spain. Who to contact and what to expect from the system during the pregnancy and post-natal period, maternity leave, midwives and vaccinations. Before conception or in the early stages of pregnancy it is recommended to explore the options available and consider the following: • Where to receive care during pregnancy • Where to deliver the baby • Where to get post natal care • Entitlements available under the social health care system • The coverage available from private health care There are both state-owned social security hospitals and private clinics in all areas of Spain. A person not entitled to social health care has the option of private care. This choice of private care may be influenced by available insurance cover and the cost of individual services. A mother wanting to give birth at a private clinic must have private insurance in place at least ten months before becoming pregnant. If this is not done, it might be difficult to find an insurer. Most regions of Spain do not provide translation services in the hospitals and clinics - Professional Business Support can provide a translator to assist with appointments.

better in labour. Some clinics provide a complete pre-natal education programme. The course should include preparation for labour (what to expect), breathing and relaxation techniques and preparation for infant feeding. In most cases the education or prenatal classes start in the 28th week. Most classes invite partners as well. Ask you local doctor for more information. Also very popular are locally organised meetings with expectant mothers.

The Birth of your Newborn Although it is seldom possible to choose a particular unit at a Social Security hospital, these hospitals tend to offer a very high standard of care, with emergency personnel services readily available. When choosing a delivery unit the following could be considered: • Which unit has the highest safety record • Whether there is a paediatrician resident in the unit 24 hours a day •If there are facilities for intensive neonatal care • The Caesarean section rate • The methods of pain relief available In the private sector, the chosen obstetrician may only deliver in one particular unit. This would limit the choice. Note: When opting for a private clinic, establish what happens in the case of premature birth - the majority of private clinics do not deliver before 36 weeks, as most premature infants need specialised 24 hour care.

Home Births Home births are generally not available in Spain.

Prenatal Care As soon as a pregnancy is suspected, consult a doctor or midwife. This visit is to confirm the pregnancy, examine the expectant mother and organise routine blood tests and an early ultrasound scan. Generally (although this may vary) pre-natal examinations will be given by a doctor or midwife. The schedule of examinations is: • Every 4 weeks up to 32 weeks. The mother is seen by the midwife and attends the hospital for scans every trimester. • Every 2 weeks after 32 weeks (in most regions in Spain). If there are any complications with the health of the mother or baby, visits will be weekly, with a second scan at 36 weeks • Between 34 and 36 weeks of pregnancy, the midwife does a compulsory group B streptococcus test (Note, this applies to state hospitals only; in most private hospitals it must be requested - one in four pregnant women have the bacteria Strep B) The reason for regular pre-natal care is to continually monitor maternal and foetal well-being, to monitor the progress of pregnancy and for early detection of deviations from normal.

Prenatal Education Prenatal education is a vital part of prenatal care. Women who receive professional pre-natal education and preparation invariably fair

After the Birth Following a normal delivery, expect to stay in hospital (private and social security) for up to 48 hours. This allows time for at least two paediatric checks on the newborn. In the case of a Caesarean delivery, expect to stay in the hospital for up to five days. Make sure there is a family member around, as help will be needed with the newborn. Before being discharged from hospital, the baby and mother have a final examination. The mother is given a certificate to be used to register the birth and an infant record book, which will be the child's health record from birth to 18 years of age.

Vaccinations The following vaccinations are recommended: tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough, (Difteria, tétano, tos farina), Haemophilus B (Haemophilus influenzae tipo B), MMR (Sarampión, paperas, rubeola) TB (BCG), Meningitis. Note that the immunisation policy may vary in the different autonomous regions of Spain. At one week of age the baby has a blood test to determine if there is any genetic error. This test is sent away for analysis and takes up to 14 days for the results to be returned. This test is only done on social security.

Hay Fever: Symptoms, Causes and Treatment A more accurate name for hay fever is seasonal allergic rhinitis, an allergic reaction to airborne substances such as pollen that get into the upper respiratory passages – the nose, sinus, throat – and also the eyes. Hay fever is the most common of all the allergic diseases. About 15 per cent of the population in industrialised countries suffer from this condition. Symptoms usually appear in childhood first and then lessen by the age of 30 or 40.

Symptoms • Itching and sneezing: The most important function of the nose is to filter air and protect the lungs. Itching and sneezing result from the effects of histamine released into tissue in the nose during an attack. • Runny nose: Nostrils are kept clear by the secretion of mucus. When you have an allergic reaction to pollen, your nose can secrete up to an eggcupful of clear, watery fluid every hour. • Stuffy, blocked nose: This is the result of swelling of the nasal tissue, caused by the release of histamine following the interaction with pollen. • Sinusitis: Sinuses are air-filled cavities in the bones of the skull which open into the nasal cavity. When tissue in the nose swells, it obstructs openings and bacteria trapped in the sinuses can multiply. This causes a painful infection called sinusitis. • Itchy, watery eyes: Pollen reacts with the membrane covering the eyes and eyelids. The membrane becomes itchy and inflamed, making the eyes look red. The eyes produce more tears to wash out the offend-

ing substance.

What Triggers Hay Fever? • Grass • Pollen • Mould • Pet hair • Dust mites Some hay-fever sufferers are sensitive to aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Treatment Reduce your exposure to pollen by taking these simple measures: • Avoid being outdoors in early evening when pollen count is highest. • Sleep with bedroom windows closed to avoid pollen from coming in. • Wear sunglasses to prevent pollen from getting into your eyes. • Holiday at coastal areas. • Shower and wash your hair to get rid of pollen.

Effective Medicine • Decongestions, e.g. Sinutab • Antihistamines, e.g. Zirtec, Telfast • Cortosteroids, available on prescription in pill and nasal sprays • Hyposensitisation. Purified grass pollen is injected under the skin for a period of 2-3 years. This reduces sensitivity. It is very effective, but can cause severe reactions like anaphylactic shock (severe allergic reactions that can cause death).

Water - Nature’s Own Fat Burner

No matter which eating plan you follow, or which hot new diet Hollywood celebs are raving about, one ingredient remains consistent and that is to consume loads and loads of water. Water has been dubbed as nature’s own fat burner and drinking enough water on a daily basis will help you not only shed those kilos, but think better, perform better and also improve your skin condition and general health. Drinking water helps to flush toxins out of your system and can also help you get rid of that extra weight you may be carrying. Why? Because drinking water has a positive impact on your metabolism and promotes the burning of energy or heat — known as thermogenesis. When your metabolism is in check, your healthy eating is given a faster boost, which means your weight loss results will come quicker to you. Failing drink adequate amounts of water, irrespective of your eating plan will result in poor hydration and slow down your metabolism. So basically, at the end of the day you are more susceptible to gaining extra weight because of your slow metabolism. Then there are other factors to consider about drinking water to reach your weight loss goals. First of all, when your body is deprived of water it often sends signals to your brain, telling it to eat. That’s right — thirst is very often misunderstood by the brain as hunger. So the next time you’re feeling overly peckish, try gulping down a few sips of water and see how you feel. Secondly, water helps to fill you up. Having a glass of plain water to ac-

company your meal, instead of that fizzy diet drink will allow you to eat less and still feel fuller. There are formulas available to help you determine exactly, to the tee, how much water your body requires for your specific weight and level of exercise intensity. But, ideally you should aim at drinking six to eight glasses of water a day. The best way to do this is to drink a glass or two with every meal. Once you get the hang of it, you will realize that you just can’t live without it — not just for weight loss reasons, but for the hundred other beneficial effects water has on your body and health.

How to protect your hair in the summer We are now coming into warmer weather and you a probably worrying about the condition of your hair and what product to use. Once you start sunbathing or swimming or even walking a lot without a hat, it's really important to use a uv filter on the hair, everyone seems to protect their skin but not their hair. The chlorine in the pool is a form of bleach and will strip the colour from your hair and leave it dry and brittle. Whatever products you are using it's important to always wash the chlorine or salt from your hair after swimming, if the chlorine is left in it will dry the hair out and make it fragile. The sun will bleach the colour from your hair too and dry out the hair and scalp and may leave it flaky. Humidity tends to cause more frizz if you have curly hair. A good sun care product a shampoo with vitamin complex will effectively cleanse the hair and scalp and helps restore moisture. It also removes sea salt and other residues, calms and soothes the scalp leaving the hair revitilised, shiny and manageable. A professional conditioning product like a sun care after sun balm with UV- filter adds natural gloss, vitality and moisture to the hair and scalp after sun exposure and also helps to protect against further sun damage due to the UV-filter. If your hair is very dry after the sun, use a treatment mask which is usually left on 10- 15 mins A suncare treatment with a UV-filter is a deep conditioning treatment for very damaged hair, repairs and deeply nourishes sun stressed hair, calms and soothes the scalp. The hair is left silky and smooth and easier to comb. I recommend Clynol id suncare range Shampoo, Balm and Treatment available from professional salons. For further information ask your professional hair salon or contact KCI Hair and Beauty Warehouse on 966726775. Article by Caroline Biggs, KCI Educator and Technical advisor.

on an empty stomach. This will calm an upset stomach, and relieve flatulence and heartburn. Reduce diabetes risk One of the great health benefits of olive oil is that it may reduce the risk of diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes. If you are diabetic, you’d be better cutting off other fats from your diet and keeping or adding olive oil in. Anti aging supplement Olive oil is high in antioxidants, including vitamin E Medical studies have indicated that diets lack in vitamin E accelerate the breakdown of certain fatty acids, a process which invari-

ably leads to aging. Moisturize the skin To moisturize dry skin, apply it daily directly to dry spots and stretch marks. Hair care Olive oil also can be used to treat a number of hair-care problems, such as dry, itchy scalp, hair loss and dandruff. Massage a few tablespoons of olive oil into the scalp and hair. Cover hair with a plastic bathing cap and leave it for 30 minutes or more, then shampoo as usual. Do it everyday for a week and you will see a significant improvement in your con-

The Jungle Drums

This month we have searched the web to find the weirdest and most wonderful crazy obsessions from around the world!

Cabbage Patch Do

lls

Pat and Joe Prosey own 5,000 cabbage patch dolls and consider them their own children. They never use the word “D-O-L-L” because the cabbage patch “kids” might hear! The “kids” have their own fairground called Magic Crystal Valley in Maryland, America, including a miniature train, motorized swing and a hot air balloon! Since 1994 the couple have operated an “adoption center” for Cabbage Patch originals saying “It’s a 24-hour job, seven days a week.”

Adonis Statue

40 year old Reighner Deleighnie has an obsession known as objectum sexuality, in which people feel romantic desire for inanimate objects. Her current obsession is with the statue of Adonis, the greek god of desire. According to The Sun she said “Being in a relationship with him has changed my life. I would never marry him , only because I couldn’t be faithful” She also told of how one day she hopes to travel to Florence to meet her dream man, Michelangelo’s statue of David ."He never tires of the emotional side of it. I can talk to him for hours about what I'm feeling, something I could never do before in my relationships with a human man."

Carrots Zizi is so obsessed with carrots that she has 35 tattoos of them all over her body. The American even makes her own carrot wine and uses carrots as hair rollers. Her mum’s ashes are kept in a 6ft fiberglass carrot shaped urn, worth £2,500. When she dies she also would like to be kept in the orange urn. Over the years Zizi has collected more than 1,000 carrot-related objects.

Ponies

Pony obsessed Sarah Butler, 29 has collected more than 1,000 My Little Pony’s, thought to be worth £20,000. Sarah told The Sun, “The reason I started collecting them was I’d left college and I thought I don’t want to grow up” Her bedroom is a shrine to My Little Pony complete with themed furniture. Amongst the collection are Cotton Candy, Tootsie and even a very rare model called Reverse Gusty, which there are only three of in the world and cost Sarah £980. How to grow and care for Begonia flowers With lots of variety, Begonias are popular in flowerbeds, for hanging baskets, as container plants, and for indoor houseplants. That's one versatile plant! yellow eye(center).

Information Begonias are prized equally for their flower as well as their showy leaves. When they are not in bloom, which is infrequent once established, their attractive, waxy green or chocolate colored leaves show themselves off wherever you have placed them. Growing Begonias is easy. They make a good indoor houseplants as they tolerate shade well.

Types of Begonias There are three types of Begonias: Tuberous, Semperflorens, and the uncommon Perennials. The Semperflorens are by far the most common. They include Fibrous Begonias, Wax Begonias and Everblooming Begonias. Depending upon type, you can find red, white, pink,or yellow varieties. All flowers have a bright

All varieties will grow compact, dense foliage, and grow about 6-9 inches tall..

Propagation Begonias are propagated from seed or cuttings. Seeds are very fine, dust-like, and take two to three weeks to germinate. Many people will buy seedlings rather than try to start these tiny seeds. Cuttings are much easier if you want to propagate a few plants and already have one. Tuberous varieties are commonly propagated by separating and replanting the tuberous roots.

How to Grow Begonias Begonias are annuals and do not like frost in the spring or fall. Set them out in containers, hanging baskets or your flowerbed after all risk of frost has

past. Begonias thrive in a range of sunlight from full sun to shade. They like rich, loose and fertile soil which drains well. Water thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry before the next watering. Begonias like attention. Remove dead flowers, leaves, and stems. Trim off long stems to help retain its compact shape. A little care will pay you back with lusher foliage and more blooms. Add a general purpose fertilizer once a month. For houseplants and container plants, give them a dose of liquid fertilizer once a month instead of dry fertilizer.

Insect and Disease There's great news here. Your begonias should have few if any problems with insects or disease.

Bring 'Em Indoors Your Begonias can be brought indoors before frost. Remember, they will die in a light frost, so if one threatens your area, don't wait. Re-pot the plants if they appear crowded. Use rich potting soil. Help them in their transition indoors. When first brought inside, keep them near a sunny window, gradually, reducing the sunlight. This will help them to adjust indoors. Significant leaf drop is common at this point. But, in a week or two, they will be well acclimated to lower light levels and dry conditions in your home. They will brighten up your home all winter.

Cartagena Port of Cultures

By Sally Bengtsson

The maritime enclave of Cartagena was already known to the Carthaginians and Romans, and its name today comes from the Latin name, Cartago Nova. Cartagena was under Arab domination until Ferdinand III the Saint reconquered it and incorporated it into the kingdom of Castile. Its port played a key role in the War of Succession and the Peninsular Wars. Today the city is a major naval station, one of the most important in the western Mediterranean. It has a population of 218,210 inhabitants. Cartagena has been inhabited for over two millennia, being founded around 227 BC as Qart Hadasht during the Phoenician conquest. The city lived its heyday during the Roman Empire, then it suffered a period of ups and downs during the Umayyad invasion of Hispania, under its Arabic name of Qartayannat al-Halfa. For a bird´s eye view of the famous harbour why not catch the “Barco Turístico”, which leaves at half past every hour, between 1.30pm and 3.30pm from the quayside near La Patatacha floating restaurant , and costs €5. It goes to the Fuerte de la Navidad, which opens 10am-2.30pm and 4pm-7pm daily except Mondays, admission costs €3.50. Built in the 18th century, la Navidad was intended to guard the entrance to the port of Cartagena by laying down crossfire with the battery of Trincabotijas, opposite. It was restored in 2006 as part of the ongoing project to make Cartagena more tourist-friendly. For a different perspective, climb the hill above the castle and look back over one of nature's great harbours and its city. Save yourself a euro and don't bother with the lift up to La Concepción Castle. Instead walk up from Calle Gisbert opposite the old 18th century Autopsy Pavilion, which was built outside the hospital so that it did not upset the patients. It's a stiff climb but it takes in great views of the old bull ring, built on top of a Roman gladiatorial arena, the 18th-century autopsy theatre and the interior of the old cathedral. Follow signs to the mirador (panoramic point) for great photos of the harbour. At the top you can pay €3.50, to visit the castle interpretive centre which opens 10am-7pm daily except Mondays. It tells the story of Cartagena from its settlement by Hasdrubal in 227 BC. Alternatively, if you do not fancy all that climbing there is a very pleasant amble to be had along the city walls if you get on at the Puertas de San Jose tourist office, and follow Muralla del Mar south to Plaza del Ayuntamiento. The amphitheatre is an impressive achievement of the Romans and was carved into the hill side rock near the port; it has been dated to approximately 1 BC. It was excavated to generate the tiered bowl of an amphitheatre which would have held 6,000 people. It was destroyed by a fire and its remains were built over, then it was not rediscovered until the 1980’s, but since then it has been preserved and remains part of Catagena’s heritage.

The museum stands on the site of the original Roman necropolis of San Antón, built at the end of the 4th century AD. The museum now contains some of the most important ancient inscriptions in Spain. Opening Times:-Tuesday-Friday 10am-2pm and 5-8pm. Saturdays and Sundays 11am-2pm. Closed: Mondays and public holidays. The name of La Mejillonera, at Calle Mayor means "mussel". It is a basic, noisy tapas bar with furiously fast service and a nautical theme. A trough runs around the bar to collect shells and discarded bills. Expect to pay around €18 for two people (including wine). At 13 Calle Mayor, Cafetería Casino is situated in part of the old 18th century casino and offers a set lunch for €10. The main high street (built narrow to maximise the shade) is Calle Mayor, which is home to two independent bookshops and an array of clothing outlets, including Massimo Dutti, Oysho, Tintoretto, Zara, Alain Manoukian and Bershka. There are a number of museums relating to the city's long and complex history under the Carthaginians, Romans and Moors. All are free if you have the Cartagena card. The Augusteum on Calle Caballero was a meeting place for the cult of Emperor Augustus. It only opens each evening between 4pm-7pm, and is closed on Monday. Admission costs €2.50. Nearby the House of Fortune at Plaza Risueño are the ruins of an ordinary Roman home from the first century BC. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 2.30pm, admission €2.50. The Punic Interpretative Centre on Calle San Diego preserves the one remaining section of wall built by Hasdrubal who founded this city in 227BC. It opens 10am-2.30pm and 4pm-7pm (until 8.30pm July-September) daily except Monday, admission is €3.50. See www.cartagenapuertodeculturas.com for further information about museums. There are a number of tourist cafe bars along the harbour front. The good thing is that you will not be overcharged for a beer or glass of wine and the view of the marina and the harbour forts beyond are magnificent. As you approach from the city, the first cafe you will come to is La Biblioteca; if this place is not to your liking, simply work your way along the harbour front until you find somewhere that suits you.

New Movie Reviews 21 Jump Street

Action / Comedy. Due release date: 11 May 2012 Description

A pair of underachieving cops are sent back to a local high school to blend in and bring down a synthetic drug ring.

Critics Reviews New York Post: “The funniest movie I've seen in more than a year.” Miami Herald: “This is the rare breed of Hollywood studio production that has the brash spirit of an independent picture and the sharp wit of a stand-up comic.” Arizona Republic: “Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller get nearly everything -- the tone, the self-referential nods to the shoe and the dead-solid-perfect surprises -- just right.” NPR: “The devil-may-care attitude is what makes 21 Jump Street so entertaining.”

Action / Adventure / Fantasy . OUT NOW! Description

Transplanted to Mars, a Civil War vet discovers a lush planet inhabited by 12-foot tall barbarians. Finding himself a prisoner of these creatures, he escapes, only to encounter a princess who is in desperate need of a savior.

Critics Reviews USA Today: “Though the project, based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel "A Princess of Mars," is ambitious, it's also bloated, dreary and humorless.” Entertainment Weekly: “Nothing in John Carter really works, since everything in the movie has been done so many times before, and so much better.” Rolling Stone: “John Carter bites off more than even Woola can chew, but it's built on something rare: wonder instead of Hollywood cynicism.”

Set in a future where the Capitol selects a boy and girl from the twelve districts to fight to the death on live television, Katniss Everdeen volunteers to take her younger sister's place for the latest match.

Jungle Drums Rating:

Boxoffice Magazine: “As action, as allegory, as cinema, The Hunger Games is the best American science-fiction film since "The Matrix," and if Ross and his crew stay with the series for the next two books, we may get that rarest of things: a blockbuster franchise that earns our money through craft, emotion and execution, not merely marketing and effects” The Guardian: “The Hunger Games is that rarest of beasts: a Hollywood action blockbuster that is smart, taut and knotty. Ably filleted from the Suzanne Collins bestseller, it's a compelling, lightly satirical tale.”

“Fateful was so much better than I thought it was going to be. Supernatural creatures, power struggles and tragic romances…. What's not to like?”

GoodRead Readers Reviews “Smart, funny, and surprisingly good at shrinking mind-boggling concepts into a comprehensible framework. ” “Very intersting, and certainly makes you think, which is what I think the author was trying to accomplish. Not cheerful, or even remotely accurate, but that was not his point. I think Peck was trying to get us to think about how long eternity really is. ”

When a man’s ego has to go

The more I work with dogs, the more I learn about human psychology. As long as you don’t have an ego, you will always succeed with your dog, because you are not afraid to ask.

In my experience, people with egos will not try to get help if their dog is misbehaving and I’m sorry to say, but the worst offendes are men. I find this fact about human psychology sad. Really sad. Because the ego is stopping the human from moving on and living a happy and peaceful life with their dog. They would rather suffer each day with their dog than ask for help. I came across the worst case of ego on a recent consultation. I was called to a home where the family in question had three dogs. One of the dogs had started to attack the youngest dog and he was going for the kill. This was serious high level aggression and one that was going to take a lot of work to stop. I sense energies very quickly, whether in people or places and have done since I was a small boy. I sensed a very 'dark' energy in the house and I knew that nothing was going to change if the two dogs stayed here during rehabilitation. So I offered to rehabilitate them at my house, where I have my own five dogs to give me valuable help. During the third evening at my house the instigating dog tried again to attack his innocent victim. I stopped the assault but observed his behaviour. Something was not right. I was witnessing something I had not come across before. He was a Terrier, as was his victim, but his stance and stamina was that of a trained fighting dog.

During the consultation I knew that something was severely wrong about this case but I had now unearthed the truth by observing the dog. You can train a dog to fight, but you can’t train a dog to lie! I called the family the next day and asked if

there was anything they wanted to tell me. The lady confirmed that there were suspicions for a while now that the dog had been trained to fight the other, by older teenagers in the household due to family politics! That, I will not go into, but up to that point I was convinced I had seen it all when it comes to human cruelty towards dogs. I worked with the two dogs for the next week and started to make some encouraging progress. This wasn’t like other cases where two dogs may fight, but then become friends again very quickly. This was trained aggression and every time this dog saw his victim he would try to kill, but at last I could see some light at

the end of the tunnel. With this in mind I called the owners and reported to them that progress was being made, but that I would need more time with them, as this type of behaviour is not rehabilitated in one week. The Wife was desperate for me to keep the dogs for longer, so I could totally solve the issues but the Husband had other ideas. It was agreed that the best outcome was for me to keep working with the dogs for longer, but I was totally amazed when just a few hours later a text came in from the Wife stating the following: “I’m really sorry, Peter, but my Husband has decided to collect the dogs this afternoon as he doesn’t like the fact that you know more about dogs than he does”! He arrived a couple of hours later, collected the dogs and took them back home. Within one week the older dog had attacked the younger dog twice and these were both serious incidents, in which the Wife was bitten trying to stop the fighting and both dogs had to be taken to the vet with injuries. A couple of weeks later the family ended up re-homing the younger dog and this was all sadly down to a man and his ego. As I have always advised, when you own a dog, if you want to learn and have a really special close bond with that dog, take your ego, put it in a black bin liner and throw it away. Peter Singh provides one-to-one consultations with dog owners who experience problem behaviour with their pets. The GTI engine crowns the open top four seater with 210bhp, making it the most powerful Golf Cabriolet ever. GTI does not only mean more power, but also a sportier exterior and interior and precisely tuned running gear. The first Volkswagen Golf GTI Cabriolet models will be delivered just in time for the official arrival of summer 2012.

At launch, customers can specify either a 6-speed manual gearbox or 6-speed DSG (dual clutch gearbox) version. Both gearboxes send the power of the turbocharged petrol direct-injection engine to the front axle. The Cabriolet is not only equipped with electronic differential locks (EDS) in its ESP system; the GTI Cabriolet also has the XDS transverse differential lock as standard. Even in full acceleration out of bends, the XDS system - also integrated in ESP - ensures optimal grip and driving stability.

The fabric top of the VW Golf Cabriolet, the basic construction of which was already designed for high speeds, was adopted 1:1 for the GTI. It is operated electro-hydraulically and takes just 9.5 seconds to open (and 11 seconds to close). The top may also be operated while driving at speeds of up to 30 km/h. When the top is up, this Volkswagen is one of the quietest convertibles available. The Volkswagen Golf GTI Cabriolet also exhibits top quality and safety attributes. Automatically deploying roll-over protection, front and side head/thorax airbags and a knee airbag on the driver's side are always standard. Last but not least, the Golf GTI Cabriolet offers the most spacious interior in its class and a fully usable boot (250 litres), even when the top is down. So, now there is no reason not to take a vacation in the Volkswagen Golf GTI Cabriolet.

Dreaming Numbers

I was walking down the street the other day when I saw my buddy Matt. I walked up to him and mentioned that I had the most bizarre dream the night before last. Matt listened intently as I told him that the dream consisted of one thing and one thing only. So I told him that all I had dreamt about was a huge glowing number "5." It was made of gold and sparkled with diamonds. Matt's curiosity was peaked. I went on to say that the first thing that I did in the morning was to grab the daily racing digest and look up the fifth race. Matt raised an eyebrow. So I told him that the #5 horse in the fifth race was named "The Fifth Element." Matt started grinning. Then I told Matt point-by-point what I did that day. I ate five bowls of cereal for breakfast and drank five cups of coffee, I went for a five mile jog to clear my head, I took a five minute shower, I dressed in the fifth suit I found in my closet, I sat in my car for five minutes before starting it up, I drove to the racetrack and parked in the fifth stall in the fifth row, I entered through the fifth admissions gate, I bought five programs, I went to the fifth betting window and bet $555 on the fifth horse in the fifth race, I went and sat in the fifth row of the bleachers making sure there were five people sitting on either side of me. I settled in and waited for the race to start. "Well," said Matt. "Did the horse win?" I frowned at Matt and said, "Stupid horse came in fifth."

A POLISH DIVORCE A Polish man moved to the USA and married an American girl. Although his English was far from perfect they got along very well. One day he rushed in to a lawyers office and asked him if he could arrange a divordce. The lawyer said that getting a divorce would depend on the circumstances and asked him the following questions. Have you any ground? Yes, an acre and half and nice little home. No, I mean what is the foundation of this case? It made of concrete. I don’t think you understand. Do either of you have a real grudge?

No we have a carport and not need one. I mean what are your relations like? All my relations are still in Poland. Is there any infidelity in your marriage? We have hi-fidelity stereo and good DVD player. Does your wife beat you up? No I always up before her. Is your wife a nagger? No, she white. Why do you want this divorce? She going to kill me. What makes you think that? I got proof What kind of proof? She going to poison me. She buy a bottle at drugstore and put on shelf in bathroom. I can read, and it say: “Polish Remover!”

Illusions

A man saw an elderly couple sitting down to lunch at a fast-food restaurant. He noticed that they had ordered just one meal, and as he watched, the older gentleman carefully divided the hamburger in half, then counted out the fries until each had half of them. The old man then began to eat, and his wife sat watching, with her hands folded in her lap.

An elderly woman decided to have her portrait painted. She told the artist, "Paint me with diamond earrings, a diamond necklace, emerald bracelets, a ruby broach, and a gold Rolex."

The young man decided to ask if they would let him buy another meal for them so that they didn't have to split theirs.

"But you are not wearing any of those things," replied the artist.

The old gentleman said, "Oh, no. We've been married 50 years, and everything has always been and will always be shared 50-50."

"I know," she said. "It's in case I should die before my husband. I'm sure he will remarry right away, and I want his new wife to go crazy looking for the jewelry”

The young man asked the wife if she was going to eat, to which she replied, "Not yet. It's his turn to use our teeth."

There was a competition to swim from Santa Monica to Catalina doing only the breaststroke. The three women who entered the race were a brunette, a redhead and a blonde. After approximately 14 hours the brunette staggered up on the shore and was declared the fastest breaststroker. About 40 minutes later the redhead crawled on shore and was declared the second place finished. Nearly 8 hours after that, the blonde finally came ashore and promptly collapsed in front of the worried onlookers. When the reporters asked why it took her so long to complete the race, she replied “I don’t want to sound like a sore loser but I think those two other girls were using their arms.”

Bernie was invited to his friend's home for dinner. Morris, the host, preceded every request to his wife by endearing terms, calling her Honey, My Love, Darling, Sweetheart, Pumpkin, etc. Bernie looked at Morris and remarked, "That is really nice, that after all these years that you have been married, you keep calling your wife those pet names." Morris hung his head and whispered - "To tell the truth, I forgot her name three years ago!"

"You look hot, my son," said the cleric. "Why don't you rest a moment, and I'll give you a hand." "No thanks," said the young man. "My father wouldn't like it."

"We'll see," says the bartender. So the guy pulls out a hamster and a tiny piano out of a bag, puts them on the bar, and the hamster begins to play. "Impressive," says the bartender, "but I'll need to see more." "Hold on," says the man. He then pulls out a bullfrog, and it sings "Old Man River." A patron jumps up from his table and shouts "Thats's Absolutely incredible! I'll give you $100 right now for the frog."

Glass Eye A man walked into a bar and sat down beside a women. Suddenly her glass eye popped out and he caught it. She thanked him and asked him if he would join her for breakfast the next day. He agreed and got her address. The next day he went to her house and had a lovely breakfast. He asked, "Do you treat all men like this?" She smiled and said, "Just the ones who catch my eye."

BLOOD TRANSFUSION An Arab Sheik was admitted to St Vincents Hospital for heart surgery, but prior to the surgery, the doctors needed to store his blood in case the need arose. As the gentleman had a rare type of blood, it couldn't be found locally, so, the call went out to all the states.

Young Paddy bought a donkey from a farmer for £100. The farmer agreed to deliver the donkey the next day. The next day he drove up and said “Sorry son, but I have some bad news. The donkeys ‘died” Paddy replied, “Well then just give me my money back.” The farmer said, “Can’t do that. I’ve already spent it” Paddy said, “Ok then just bring me the dead donkey.”

Handy Hints for your Home 1. Avoid cutting yourself when slicing vegetables by getting someone else to hold the vegetables while you chop. 2. Avoid arguments with the females about lifting the toilet seat by using the sink. 3. For high blood pressure sufferers ~ simply cut yourself and bleed for a few minutes, thus reducing the pressure on your veins. Remember to use a timer.

Finally a Scot was located who had a similar blood type. The Scot willingly donated his blood for the Arab. After the surgery, the Arab sent the Scotsman as appreciation for giving his blood, a new BMW, diamonds & US dollars. A couple of days later, once again, the Arab had to go through a corrective surgery. His doctor telephoned the Scotsman who

"Don't be silly," the minister said. "Everyone is entitled to a break. Come and have a drink of water."

was more than happy to donate his blood again. After the second surgery, the Arab sent the Scotsman a thank-you card & a jar of candies. The Scotsman was shocked that the Arab this time did not reciprocate his kind gesture as he had anticipated.

Again the young man protested that his father would be upset. Losing his patience, the clergyman said, "Your father must be a real slave driver. Tell me where I can find him and I'll give him a piece of my mind!" "Well," replied the young farmer, "he's under the load of hay."

The farmer asked, “What are you going to do with him?” Paddy said, “I’m going to raffle him off” The farmer said, “You can’t raffle a dead donkey!” Paddy said, “Sure I can. Watch me. I just won’t tell anybody he’s dead”. A month later, the farmer met up with Paddy and asked, “What happened with that dead donkey?” Paddy said, “I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at £2 each and made a profit of £898” The farmer said, “Didn’t anyone complain?” Paddy said, “Just the guy who won. So I gave him his £2 back” Paddy now works for the Royal Bank of Scotland 4. A mouse trap placed on top of your alarm clock will prevent you from rolling over and going back to sleep after you hit the snooze button. 5. If you have a bad cough, take a large dose of laxatives. Then you'll be afraid to cough. 6. You only need two tools in life - WD40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape. 7. If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

He phoned the Arab & asked him: "I thought you would be generous again, that you would give me a BMW, diamonds & money... But you only gave me a thank-you card & a jar of candies". To this the Arab replied: "Aye, but I now have Scottish blood in my veins

WOMEN FALLS IN LOVE WITH STATUE OF LIBERTY 27-year-old Amanda Whittaker doesn't like to be called Amanda Whittaker. She prefers Amanda Liberty, which makes sense when you realise she's in love with the Statue Of Liberty. You know, in a way. The unassuming shop assistant from Leeds may look like a regular girl, but in reality she has a very rare condition known as objectum sexuality, which sees her fall madly in love with inanimate objects. Her first love affair was with a drum kit her parents gave her when she turned 13, but since then she's moved on to bigger things. Much bigger things, in fact. She's now visited the iconic New York landmark she calls her lover four times, hugging and kissing and carressing the 151ft green lady whenever she goes. As for her bedroom, it's covered in Statue Of Liberty memorabilia, with her prize item being a 6ft reproduction of the grand ol' dame.
