PEDDLING AROUND

S

pain’s biggest spectator sporting event, La Vuelta a España, comes to the Costa Blanca this weekend with Sunday’s ninth stage of the cycle race starting on the Orihuela Costa. In a blow to local fans in Torrevieja, the action will by-pass the city centre streets because the local council says it hasn’t got enough police and Guardia Civil officers to patrol the event, despite the route being announced months ago. Torrevieja council’s move has led to a war of words between past and present mayors, with the incumbant José Manuel Dolón saying that they are short of fifty people to be able to do the security work. He added that not enough officers had volunteered, and that he was following the recommendations of his local police chief. His predecessor Eduardo Dolón, now vice-president of the Alicante Provincial Council, says that a written offer to provide security staffing from his authority had been rejected and that

the city has lost out on hosting a premium event which will now skirt by Torrevieja

would take in some major local sites like the lakes as it passes through on the N332. Live television coverage though will ignore the Vega Baja region, as like in 2015, the broadcasters will concentrate on the crucial action in the northern part of Alicante Province. La Vuelta will spend a significant time over the next few days in the Murcia Region and Alicante Province, with stage eight tomorrow running from Hellín to Xorret de Catí in Alicante Province. Sunday’s ninth stage will

on the N-332. Dolón described the situation as “pitiful” after he successfully campaigned to bring La Vuelta to the area for a stage start in Torrevieja two years ago (pictured). His successor, José Manuel Dolón, added that the matter of security was even more crucial in the light of last week’s terror attacks in Catalunya, and that Torrevieja would still get major exposure as the race

start at La Glea beach on the Orihuela Costa at 1.00 pm, and will head up the coast on the N-332 passing by La Mata (1.35 pm) Guardamar (1.44 pm), Santa Pola (2.09 pm), and Gran Alacant (2.20 pm), before finishing up at Cumbre del Sol at Benitatxell. Orihuela local police say that traffic access to La Glea beach will be stopped tomorrow (Saturday) from 1.00 pm through to 9.00 pm on the Sunday evening. Parking will also be prohibited on Ronda de Campoamor and Avenida de Las Adelfas, as well as in all the streets adjoining them. After a Monday rest day in Alicante Province, Tuesday will see a Murcia region stage between Caravaca and El Pozo. and the following day, stage 11 will start from Lorca. Tour de France champion Chris Froome is trying to become the first person since Bernard Hinault back in 1973 to do the double of winning La Vuelta and the Tour in the same season.

Industrial action scheduled for most of Spain’s airports next month and throughout the rest of the year has been put on pause, as extra negotiations have been scheduled between unions and airport management. The action which would

have affected Alicante-Elche and San Javier airports is to do with working conditions as well as contracts and salaries, though unions have emphasised that the strikes will be reinstated if no progress is made in their talks with AENA, who operate the airports.

A plain-clothed National Police officer arrested a knifeman in the Plaza de Oriente area of Torrevieja on Saturday, as worried bystanders watched with their nerves on edge after the recent terror attacks in Catalunya. The man, said to be in his forties, had apparently just robbed a couple of houses in the area, and it was sug-

gested that he may be mentally ill. He waved a knife around, with the officer bringing him under control, despite suffering some minor cuts to his arms and hands. False rumours started to circulate on social media that it was some kind of terrorist incident, with even hoax messages about the arrest being posted.

The cell behind last week’s Barcelona van attack had planned to use explosives against monuments including the city's famous Sagrada Familia church, a suspect told a Madrid court on Tuesday. Mohamed Houli Chemlal is one of four surviving suspects who gave evidence. He and Driss Oukabir have both been charged with membership of a terrorist organisation and murder. Salah al-Karib has been detained pending further investigations, while Mohammed Aallaa was released on bail.

According to Houli Chemlal, the group's plans - which he had known of "for at least two months were scaled back when a house packed with bombmaking equipment blew up the day before. He was injured in the accidental blast that reduced the house to rubble in the town of Alcanar. The Alcanar explosion came the day before Thursday's Barcelona attack in which a van was driven at speed down the main Las Ramblas boulevard, killing 13 and injuring more than 100. Assailants killed a total of

15 people in the van attack, the stabbing of a driver whose car was commandeered shortly afterwards, and a car attack in the resort of Cambrils hours later. Eight members of the cell are dead - two were killed in the Alcanar explosion, and six were later shot by police, including five after the Cambrils attack. The last suspect to be killed was Moroccan-born Younes Abouyaaqoub, 22, believed to be the driver of the Las Ramblas van. He was shot dead by police in a vineyard west of Barcelona on Monday.

Safety Precautions

Water Expansion Emergency plans have been instigated by Spain’s agriculture and environment department to increase production at the water desalination plants in San Pedro del Pinatar and Torrevieja at a cost of over two million euro. As drought concerns continue, the work to increase the use of the San Pedro del

Pinatar and Torrevieja desalination plants will include the expansion of the Vistabella-Torrealta-Murcia hydropower system. The ministry says that the increased provision of desalianted water will benefit more than two and a half million consumers across the Valencia and Murcia regions.

Torrevieja has ramped up street security in the wake of last week's terrorist attacks in Catalunya, including the installation of concrete bollards to reduce the chance of similar out-

rages using vans on the city's streets. Squares and public areas including the Paseo Vista Alegre (picture from Objectivo Torrevieja), had the barriers put in last

weekend. Torrevieja's measures are typical of what is being carried out right across Spain by municipalities, with an increased police presence as well.

Extreme Action

The Guardia Civil is investigating the poisoning of a group of feral cats on the Orihuela Costa, after they were discovered on Monday morning lying on Calle Langosta. The Informacion newspaper reported that a number of residents were annoyed that a woman had been feeding the felines (file photo), with her neighbours telling her stop doing it.

The local police got involved over the last few weeks to try to get the animals transferred to a shelter, but nothing happened, with Informacion claiming that the officers didn’t get a reply to their requests from the appropriate Orihuela council department. A resident told the newspaper that six cats were spotted dead lying on Calle Langosta and described the poisoning as “savage”,

warning that more cases are likely to happen as cats go to homes looking for food. Informacion has reported that the residents have also called for the Guardia Civil’s environmental division, SEPRONA, to get involved, with suggestions that it will be difficult to find out who was behind the poisonings, as there were no witnesses to the act being carried out.

Pola Road Rage Opposition politicians on Santa Pola council have called for an extraordinary plenary meeting of the authority to discuss the pedestrianisation of the town's streets and the impact on the local economy. Partido Popular councillors want a special committee of the council featuring all political parties to rethink the plans, with protests having taken place in Santa Pola involving business owners and residents. The PP have also listed a number of roads they want open from 7.00 am to 7.00 pm.

Rotonda Removal

A judge has ordered Torrevieja council to foot the bill over scrapping an illegally built roundabout on one of the key roads in the city. The roundabout was illegally constructed a decade ago by a builder next to the Las Lagunas college on

Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas, and the council has deemed liable for it because it allowed to be built in the first place, and ten years has passed since it appeared. Councillor Fanny Serrano said it was now classified as municipal property and that the cur-

rent authority would have to deal with the matter, even though it had been allowed to go through by the previous Partido Popular administration, which lost the local elections in 2015. The roundabout does not comply with standard safety designs and road lay-outs.

Flying High

Alicante-Elche airport welcomed one point six million passengers last month, a rise of 11.6 percent on July of last year whilst San Javier airport recorded an increase of just under six percent over a twelve month period. So far this year, seven point eight million passengers have passed through Alicante-Elche airport, an

increase of thirteen and a half percent compared to the same period in 2016, with this year set to be yet another record breaking year for the facility. Over 40 percent of the travellers in July at Alicante-Elche were British, accounting for just under 690 thousand passengers, with the next highest foreign group being those from

Norway at 111 thousand. Just under 159 thousand people used San Javier airport in July, with a massive 75 percent of those being British. 685 thousand passengers have come through San Javier over the first seven months of the year, putting the rise at under 11 percent compared to the 2016 figures.

Fugitive Sought

A driver who refused to stop at a police checkpoint in Rojales was chased for 20 kilometres on Tuesday afternoon, with Guardia Civil officers firing at his car in Mil Palmeras, before he abandoned his vehicle in Torre de la Horadada. Officials described him as almostly certainly being a “common criminal”, and nothing to do with terrorism. The man was said to be aged in his thirties and of North African origin, and fled

from the checkpoint at a Rojales petrol station in his Volkswagen vehicle, which had number plates on it that belonged to a Renault Laguna registered in Castellón in the northern part of the Valencia region. The fugitive was pursued by the Rojales local police, who were joined by the Guardia Civil in the chase, as the pursuit went south to the Pilar de la Horadada area. Guardia officers fired three shots at the

Volkswagen vehicle in Mil Palmeras, two of which hit the car. The fleeing vehicle then collided with a police car on Calle Río Vinalopó in Torre de la Horadada, with the man escaping on foot. Police sources said that the fugitive suffered a face injury during the collision. Road blocks and a sweep of Torre de la Horadada took place on Tuesday night, but as the Courier went to press, no arrest had been made.

Firebug Repeat

Three cars were set ablaze in the Mar Azul area of Torrevieja last weekend in the latest of a whole string of similar incidents to hit the urbanisation. A 64-year-old woman has been arrested and denied bail by a Torrevieja judge in connection with starting five

fires and throwing a corrosive substance onto vehicles. The Informacion newspaper reports that the Guardia Civil are investigating eight car fires and damage to another dozen vehicles, with the latest blaze hitting vehicles

parked up close to the Colegio Público Amanece on Avenida de Don Juan de Austria at around 2.30 am on Monday morning . Fast action by the firefighters meant that the flames were extinguished before they spread to nearby trees and buildings.

Follow The Flag

French Tracker

Passengers on board a holiday jet flying from Spain to Birmingham have told how it was shadowed by a French fighter plane for up to 15 minutes. Low-cost carrier Jet2 said Flight LS1204 was apparently tracked by the French air force last Friday afternoon, and reasons for the action was given. Passenger Sarah Hatfield, who was travelling

back to the UK from Malaga with husband Ian and their 13-year-old daughter Emily, said: “Someone spotted the French jet and told the cabin crew, who I presume told the Jet2 pilots." “The air stewardess then announced there was nothing to worry about. Ian was terrified and it didn’t help that loads of other passengers came by us to look out at it.”

Mrs Hatfield, from Dudley in the West Midlands, said of the fighter jet: “It was so close I could read the writing on its tail fin.” The bank worker, whose daughter took several photos of the French warplane, added: “The feeling on board was a mixture of excitement at seeing the fighter so close up and terror as to if we were about to get shot down.”

Strip Pledge

Bathers who flout red flags on Torrevieja's beaches should be fined under existing laws, says mayor José Manuel Dolón. A spate of recent incidents

across Alicante Province and the Mar Menor has seen bathers refuse to observe the no swimming rules when the red flags are flown. Dolón has reminded the

local police chief that laws should be enforced which could see fines of between 750 and 1,500 euro imposed if the bathers ignore red flags.

Tourist Move

Local business owners in Cabo Roig and across the Orihuela Costa met recently with Orihuela’s street cleaning councillor Damasco Aparicio, and got a promise that footpaths along the Cabo Roig Strip would be

swept bi-weekly, as well as extra small waste bins being provided. Aparicio said that the footpaths would be cleaned twice a week on a Monday and Friday for the rest of the summer season. The

business representatives also expressed their concern that nothing was being done about illegal street hawkers operating in the area, and requested a greater police presence during the high season.

No Worries

Almoradi council is after ideas from local people to help boost the area and focus on the location as a tourist destination. The push is specifically targetting younger residents

of the Vega Baja town who may have an interest in art and design, or are multilingual to contribute suggestions including the fields of sport, shopping, dining out, as well as the

traditional fiestas and parades. Areas that the authority is looking to expand tourist promotion include via the internet; leaflets; and walking routes.

Almoradi firefighters prevented the spread of a fire in Dolores last Saturday lunchtime, with no buildings having to be evacuated. The blaze was reported shortly after 1.00 pm on land by Calle Ramón area.

Lift Of Death

A 26-year-old woman died in a bizarre accident at the weekend when her head was crushed by an elevator at the Virgen de Valme hospital in the Dos Hermanas area of a Sevilla. The woman was being transported on Sunday afternoon after a cesaerean section when her

stretcher got stuck in the lift, leaving her head inside. A guard had tried to remove the stretcher carrying the woman from the elevator but was unsuccessful. The lift’s closing system had reportedly failed, causing the fatal accident. The woman, who was

identified solely as "RC," had just given birth to her third child. Andalucia’s health minister, Marina Alvarez, said an urgent investigation into the incident had been opened and stated that the elevator had passed previous inspections, with the last check being on August 12th.

Mum In Hiding

A mother of two, Juana Rivas (pictured at a secret location), has been hiding somewhere in Spain since the end of July after a Granada court ordered her to hand over her two children, aged three and 11, to their Italian father, Francesco Arcuri, on July 26th. That followed a court order giving him custody of the boys, after Ms Rivas had taken them back to Spain from Italy last year without his consent. The story has gripped the Spanish media for weeks. Ms Rivas and the children did not turn up for the handover and she then failed to appear for a court summons on August 8th. The judge ordered her arrest and she could face a prison sentence of up to four years for abduction. She has not been seen in public since the July handover date. Ms Rivas has said that during their relationship Mr

Arcuri abused her physically and psychologically and mistreated their older son, pointing to a three-month jail sentence her former partner received for domestic abuse eight years ago. "A woman running away from terror to protect her children can't be deemed abduction," said a letter by Ms Rivas, read out at a demonstration to support her in Granada last week. It added that "an abuser never gives you permission to leave". Campaigners have made Ms Rivas a symbol of Spain's ongoing battle against gender violence, which sees an average of 60 women killed each year by their partners or ex-partners. But Francesco Arcuri insists he is the victim of a media frenzy that has distorted their relationship, cast him as the villain and deprived him of seeing his children. Ms Rivas has described

herself as being trapped in the Italian countryside, living in fear of an abusive partner. In May 2016, she took the children back to Spain and their father has not seen them since. She then filed another domestic abuse claim. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy also appeared to take her side. "One has to take into account what has happened," he told reporters. "She had to go to Italy, had to return, she has been attacked twice, her husband has been convicted by the courts." But Mr Arcuri, who claims his ex-partner was constantly out partying in Italy and leaving him to do most of the parental duties, says Spanish public opinion has unjustly turned against him. A Swiss woman, identified as S.M, who was Mr Arcuri's partner for 10 years, has said she does "not believe for one second that he has mistreated his wife and kids".

Eggs Confisciated

A consignment of powdered eggs contaminated with the insecticide fipronil has been seized in Catalunya a week after a haul of liquid egg was confiscated at customs in the Basque Country – but neither had reached the retail market before they were detected. The contaminated egg scandal across Europe has not affected Spain, a country where the majority of foodstuffs on sale is nationallyproduced. Health authorities stress that none of the eggs affected with the banned pesticide – given to hens to kill off certain parasites but prohibited in the European Union –

have reached the shelves in Spanish shops. The batch of powdered eggs, 50 kilos' worth in total, came from The Netherlands, which is where the fipronil affecting the Belgian-produced eggs that have affected several European countries came from. Although the amount of fipronil in eggs destined for the retail market is so low as to present practically no risk to human health, the fact that it is a banned substance means all those affected have been taken off the shelves. This includes chicken and produce made with this and with eggs retailed in 19 EU member States, not including Spain.

The Chase Is On

A chase involving a stolen Toyota Land Cruiser taken in Santiago de la Ribera and the San Javier local police, saw a 32-year-old Ukrainian man arrested for recklesss driving and resisting the police. The events happened in the early hours of last Thursday morning at around 5.30 am when the owner of a stolen car filed a report to the police, with officers spot-

ting it at a routine patrol in San Javier before the chase started on the AP-7 towards San Pedro del Pinatar. The high speed pursuit eventually ended up in Santiago where the Ukrainian dumped the car close to Playa Barneuvo before the chase continued on foot through several streets, before he was eventually arrested, after injurying three officers.

Founder’s Death

Co-founder of the Cruz Azul Murcia animal charity, Sue Thomason (pictured right), recently passed away after a brave battle against cancer. With Lyn Baines (pictured left with Lyn’s husband Billy), Sue from Los Alcazares created the group four years ago, with the aims of helping people on low incomes look after their pets in the Murcia region, as well as promoting responsible pet ownership. Sue set up the main fundraising Cruz Azul centre in San Javier, with Cruz Azul president Lyn Baines saying that the news, though not unexpected, had shocked everybody. “The group is determined to go from “strength to strength because that’s what Sue would have wanted,” Lyn added.

Volunteer Appeal

The Villamartin-based Plaza Golf Society recently decided to wear pink for a round of golf in Villamartin to support their chosen charity, the cancer awareness group, Maria and the Pink Ladies. 420 euro was raised on the day, and there are more details about the society on the website, www.theplazagolfsociety.com

Jack’s Cropped

Making Friends

The HELP Vega Baja Association last week celebrated 18 months since they started their weekly Friendship Group on the La Marina urbanisation in San Fulgencio.

Regulars at a San Javier area bar dug deep into their pockets to help one of their customers raise nearly 900 euro for the MABS Murcia/Mar Menor cancer support charity. Jack Campbell’s spon-

sored head shave notched up an impressive 880 euro thanks to the regulars at Mady's Bar in San Cayetano, along with all of Jack’s friends. He’s pictured handing over to a cheque to Janet Bell from MABS.

If you have some spare time on your hands, the Torrevieja branch of the MABS Cancer Support group are looking for volunteers to help continue the work they do. They run a charity and advice centre that’s open six days a week between 10.00 am and 2.00 pm (closed Sunday) on Torrevieja’s Calle Santander. MABS would like volunteers to help the shop for four hours a week as well as drivers for the collection and delivery of furniture. The charity is also after translators; drivers to take patients to medical appointments; and fundraisers. For more information, just pop into the shop, or call MABS on either 634 323 718 or 602 648 486.

The Friendship Group meet every Wednesday throughout the year at The Posh Club between 2.30 pm and 5.00 pm, and everybody is more than welcome to drop in!

The King Lives Almost thirteen-hundred euro was raised last week for the Samaritans in Spain at a special charity night that commemorated the great Elvis Presley, 40 years after his death. Danny Fisher’s Elvis tribute act attracted 170 people to the Quesada Fish & Chips restaurant, as the diners dug deep into their pockets to support the evening.

Less Of A Buzz

Honey production in Spain dropped by four per cent last year in what is the largest beekeeping nation in the European Union, accounting for over 15 percent of the beehive total in the region, with nearly two and a half million beehives.

The fall in honey production is down to a decline in bees, and last year Spain produced 32,076 tonnes of honey, signalising a drop in volume of over seven percent compared to figures five years ago. In spite of this, the number

of beekeepers keeps growing and has passed the 30,000 mark, some 12 percent up on the 2015 figures. Despite the statistics, Spain is still a net honey importer; importing approximately two tonnes more than it exports.

Better Drainage

100 thousand euro is to be spent by Almoradi council to improve the drains and sewers at El Saladar village. Heavy rain constantly brings problems to Calles Las ViĂąas and La Cruz (pictured), with the improvements being funded by the Alicante Provincial Council.

Late Repairs

Work was scheduled to finish this week to repair the damage caused by the winter storms to the

seafront in the San Roque area of Torrevieja. Improved accessibility is the priority of the project, which was only

recently approved by provincial coastal authority due to a dispute with the Acuamed company.

Shutters Down

The Tourist Information office at Alicante-Elche airport was shut last

My Dog Won’t Walk! Is your dog becoming stubborn and refusing to walk, as well as looking totally disinterested in the prospect, or even teases you by walking out with you through the gate, and then just becomes as a solid as a statue? There are many reasons dogs refuse to walk. Fearful dogs often balk at venturing into the world. Passive protest is one way they avoid scary things.Physical discomfort such as being too hot or too cold can trigger misbehaviour. Some dogs want the chance to stop and cool down. Other dogs struggle with ice pellets and salt painfully trapped in their paws. Also, consider physical ailments. Orthopedic problems can cause pain. Young dogs are not immune. While rare, early onset hip dysplasia can affect puppies. Once all the usual suspects have been ruled out, carefully evaluate your training technique. Dogs, especially social butterflies, will misbehave to get attention. Some will even act out to get negative attention. Owners may think prodding and pulling is serving to hurry the dog along. Dogs see things differently. They got the owner’s attention and thus a reward. When owners repeatedly pull a treat out of their pocket to coax a dog along after it lies down, it creates the exact same problem. The dog learns that lying down brings attention and food treats Instead, give rewards while the dog is walking nicely. Encourage the dog to follow you by using your voice and tapping your leg. When the dog follows, reward it with plenty of attention and treats. Continue to reward the dog every few steps, before it decides to lie down. With practice, you will instill new habits and use fewer treats over time. Dogs also tell your state of mind and whether you find the walk “fun”. You need to find ways of making the walk “fun” for both of you. Here are five things to remember and work on:1. Take a different route where there are new smells 2. Go out of the back or side door instead of the front door (if you can do so!) 3. Go out and then come right back in, then go out again 4. Try adding a jog or run in between walking 5. Keep him guessing what’s next

KALI Kali is a small kilo female terrier aged around 18 months, and is currently in a foster home with lots of other dogs and cats. Kali was rescued from a perrera and promptly gave birth to four puppies who have all been rehomed. She is loving and likes to be cuddled, and would be a faithful loving companion, but she is not great with other females but is fine with males! For more about Kali please call PEPA on 650 304 746 or email p.e.p.a.animalcharity@gmail.com

You need to increase your dog's level of “wanting” to go on the dog walk. Stop along the way and practice your basic commands with a treat. Challenge your dog's mind. And always end the walk before he’s ready, even if that means only going for 10 minutes. At least for the initial re-training of the mindset, keep the walks short so you always leave him wanting more. This will change his mindset to anticipate the next walk and want to go. Second, keep in mind that this is a dog that is not saying, “I’m tired.” This is a dog that’s saying, “I’m bored. I want more fun.” The dog is rebelling the structure of the dog walk. Think about it. On the walk, the dog is asked to be calm, to stay with you or behind you, to go at a slower pace. This is structure, and that’s good. Rules, boundaries, and limitations! But finding the balance between that and fun is your challenge.

Ramping It Up

Lost Appeal Figures

A Murcia court has confirmed the sentence of a man to five years in jail after he robbed a branch of the Cajamar bank in Santomera on the Murcia-Alicante Province border in April 2016.

The man, originally from the JaĂŠn region of the country, stole over 12 thousand euro after threatening staff with a fake gun, and then drove off to Orihuela where he was pulled up a few hours later for dangerous

driving . His lawyer had pushed for a reduction of the sentence to three years because they claimed their client was suffering from a depressive disorder, but the Murcia judges rejected the appeal.

Costa Change A hut used as a meeting and information centre at the Paraje Natural de Las Lagunas de Lo Monte has had a makeover, which includes putting in some ramps for better disabled access, as well as some new front doors. The work has been carried out by Pilar de la Horadada council, subsidised by the Alicante Provincial Council, and is part of maintenance work being carried out being carried out across the park.

The Vega Baja bus company Costa Azul has been bought by the national Avanza company, but the locally famous brand name

is to stay. The Informacion newspaper reports that the Orihuela-based firm has been sold to Avanza, who is

Spain’s biggest operator of buses and coaches. The Costa Azul workforce will retained at the current level.

Rising Figures Fires in Spain have burnt 75,026 hectares of forest land in the current year, topping European charts for loss of land to fires. It’s the worst year for forest fires in Spain since 2012, according to government figures for 2017 running until August 13th. So far this year, there have been 9.632 fire incidents, including 5.816 arson attempts and 3.816 fires. The northeast of the country (Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque region) was the most affected area.

Copper Crooks

Dual Relief

A tender is be advertised by the Public Works ministry in Madrid for a dual carriageway upgrade to almost

five kilometres of road around Alicante-Elche airport. The improvements,

accounting for nearly 30 million euro, will take place on N-338, linking up to the N332 and A-70.

On The Run

Six people who stole copper coils and wires from electricity substations and sold it on to a scrapyard have been arrested by the National Police in Orihuela City. The gang would climb

fences and force their way through the doors of substations across the Orihuela area, putting their lives at risk, as well as disrupting electricity supplies to the region. They would take the cop-

per off the transformers in the buildings, and then sell off to a scrapyard in the Cox area. No further details were released about those arrested, only that they were detained by the National Police last week.

Rising Danger Wolf In Luminous Sheep’s Clothing

Alicante Province is the unwelcome leader in Spain this year of the number of people losing their lives through drowning, with 31 deaths so far in 2017, a 40 percent rise on the figures from 2016, which have been compiled by the Federation of Spanish Rescue Services. Experts say that part of the reason is that on the back of the winter storms, new channels of dangerous currents have been created.

There have also been a number of people losing their lives because of flouting red flag warnings. José Luis Hernández Olivas, the Cruz Roja coordinator in Guardamar, where a couple recently drowned after ignoring red flags, told the Informacion newspaper that bathers just seemed to show a lack of awareness and did not believe they could get into trouble. He also said that the winter storms have created

fresh problems. "The winter weather destroyed beaches that have not returned to their old state, and that has altered the currents and the terrain”. That view was backed up by Jorge Olcina from the geography department of Alicante University who stated:- “There’s a new dynamic to local beaches, with holes in the sand being created within the first metres of the sea meaning that bathers risk falling into them”.

A 36-year-old Frenchman who robbed arriving passengers at Alicante-Elche airport has been arrested by the National Police. Officers combed through

hours of security footage to check on what was going on after a series of burglary reports reached them. The man would often wear a reflective vest and would

offer to help tourists with their luggage. Once the unsuspecting visitors were lulled into a false sense of security, he proceeded to rob them.

I read your article in the Courier every week and I was wondering if you can Hi Richard. Until recently, I could copy and paste, using both Windows seven help me resolve a problem with junk mail. Recently I have been receiving junk and windows ten programmes, from a translation programme in a browser winmail and when I try to block it I get a message saying I cannot because it dow straight into an e-mail message in Yahoo mail. Now I cannot. Has there comes from my own email address. Obviously, this is virus / con trick. I have been a recent update in Windows ten which I am unable to control that now prevents Kaspersky Total security antivirus but it does not find this problem. Any ideas how to me from doing this? If not, how can I access the clipboard to attempt to change its setstop these types of emails arriving in my in box? I also get emails that I try to block and tings? Regards Max then I get a message saying that the sender email address does not exist! Best Regards,John

A

Hi Max, I am not aware of any updates that would stop this functionality and my computer is up to date and works fine with copy and paste.

A

Hi John, there are two likely reasons why this could be happening, first is that your account has become compromised, you should change your password as a precaution anyway – if this is the cause then you will also see the emails in How are you doing it? I find that highlighting the text that you want, pressing your sent items. The second is that someone (or something, more likely a bot) CTRL and C to copy and then click where you want to paste the text and press CTRL is “spoofing” your email address and there isn’t really anything that you can do about and V works best for me, perhaps that is something that you haven’t tried, give it a go. that, it’s the ability (without the relevant domain checks in place) for anyone to send email pretending to be another person.

Crab Ravioli

Food & Drink

Ingredients For the pasta 150g 00 pasta flour 1 large egg and 2 yolks, lightly beaten ½ tbsp olive oil For the filling 150g white and brown crabmeat 100g ricotta ½ lemon, zest (use the rest in the sauce) 1 tbsp tarragon, leaves picked, finely chopped 1 tbsp dill, finely chopped For the sauce 40g unsalted butter ½ lemon, zest and juice Method First make the pasta. Put the flour in a food processor with almost all of your egg mixture, oil and a pinch of salt. Blitz to large crumbs – they should come together to form a dough when squeezed (if it feels a little dry gradually add a bit more egg). Tip the dough onto a lightly floured surface, knead for 1 min or until nice and smooth – don’t worry if it’s quite firm as it will soften when it rests. Cover with cling film and leave to rest for 30 mins. To make the filling, mix all of the ingredients together, season and leave in the fridge until needed. Cut away ¼ of the dough (keep the rest covered with cling film) and feed it through the widest setting on your pasta machine. (If you don’t have a machine, use a heavy rolling pin to roll the dough as thinly as possible.) Then fold into three, give the dough a quarter turn and feed through the pasta machine again. Repeat this process once more then continue to pass the dough through the machine, progressively narrowing the rollers, one notch at a time, until you have a smooth sheet of pasta. On the narrowest setting, feed the sheet through twice. Put the pasta sheet on a lightly floured surface, then spoon teaspoons of the filling 4cm apart on the bottom half of the sheet. Using your fingers, pat water around each blob of filling. Fold the top half over the fillings and carefully squeeze around, making sure to remove any air pockets. Cut between each ravioli using a pasta cutter or sharp knife, then pinch around the edges of each ravioli to make sure it is well sealed. Keep on a lightly floured baking tray while you repeat the process with the remaining dough and filling. Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil. In a large, non-stick pan, melt the butter over a medium heat and cook for 2-3 mins until brown and nutty. Take off the heat and whisk in a splash of the pasta water and the lemon juice. Cook the ravioli for 2-3 mins, remove with a slotted spoon and immediately toss in the brown butter sauce. Serve topped with the lemon zest and a crack of black pepper. Prep: 30 Mins Cook: 10 Mins Serves: 2 Main or 4 Starter

Crunchy meringue, whipped cream and strawberry sauce is a winning combination, best served al fresco Ingredients 2 large egg whites 120g caster sugar 500g strawberries, hulled and roughly chopped 450ml double cream 1 tbsp icing sugar Method Heat oven to 120C/100C fan/gas 1 and line a large baking tray with parchment paper. Whisk the egg whites in a clean bowl using an electric whisk or tabletop mixer until they reach stiff peaks, then add the sugar in 3 lots, re-whisking to stiff peaks every time. Spoon dollops of the mixture onto the baking parchment, cook on the bottom shelf of the oven for 1hr – 1hr15 mins until the meringues are completely hard and come off the paper easily. Leave to cool. Blitz 1/3 of the strawberries to make a strawberry sauce. In a large bowl whisk the cream with the icing sugar until it just holds its shape. Roughly crush ¾ of the meringues and tip them in with the chopped strawberries and stir, then swirl through the strawberry sauce. Dollop into bowls then crush the remaining meringues, sprinkling the pieces over the top. Prep: 20 Mins Cook: 1 Hr, 15 Mins Serves: 6

Plants 'hijacked' to make polio vaccine Plants have been "hijacked" to make polio vaccine in a breakthrough with the potential to transform vaccine manufacture, say scientists. The team at the John Innes Centre, in Norfolk, says the process is cheap, easy and quick. As well as helping eliminate polio, the scientists believe their approach could help the world react to unexpected threats such as Zika virus or Ebola. Experts said the achievement was both impressive and important. The vaccine is an "authentic mimic" of poliovirus called a virus-like particle. Outwardly it looks almost identical to poliovirus but like the difference between a mannequin and person - it is empty on the inside. It has all the features needed to train the immune system, but none of the weapons to cause an infection. The scientists hijacked a relative of the tobacco plant's metabolism to turn its leaves into polio-vaccine "factories". First, they needed to create new instructions for the plant to follow. The starting material was

the genetic code for making the outer surface of poliovirus. It was enhanced by combining it with material from viruses that naturally infect plants. The new instructions were then put into soil bacteria, which were used to infect tobacco. The infection took hold, the plants read the genetic instructions and started making the virus-like particles. Infected leaves were mixed with water, blended, and the polio vaccine was extracted. The virus-like particles prevented polio in animal experiments, and an analysis of their 3D structure showed they looked almost identical to poliovirus. Prof George Lomonossoff, from the John Innes Centre, said "They are incredibly good mimics. "It's a very promising technology, "I would hope we get vaccines produced in plants in the not too distant future." The research is funded by the World Health Organization, as part of efforts to find replacements for the polio vaccine. Polio - which can cause permanent paralysis - is a thing

of the past for most of the world, but the infection has not been eradicated. And using weakened poliovirus in current vaccines poses a risk of the virus regaining some of its dangerous traits - called vaccine-derived poliovirus. Dr Andrew Macadam, principal scientist at the UK's National Institute for Biological Standards and Control, said: "Current vaccines for polio are produced from large amounts of live virus, which carries a threat of accidental escape and reintroduction. "This study takes us a step

closer to replacing current polio vaccines, providing us with a cheap and viable option for making virus-like particle-based vaccines." Great potential But this technology is not limited to polio or even just to vaccines. As long as researchers have the right sequence of genetic code, they can make a vaccine against most viruses. And they have also used plants to make antibodies like those being used in cancer therapy.

Plants are also being investigated as a new source for the winter flu jab. Currently, it is grown in chicken eggs and takes months to develop. Prof Lomonossoff said: "In an experiment with a Canadian company, they showed you could actually identify a new strain of virus and produce a candidate vaccine in three to four weeks. "It has potential for making vaccines against emerging epidemics, of course recently we had Zika and prior to that we had Ebola. "It's highly responsive, and

that's one of the great attractions of the technology." The plants have the advantage of growing quickly and needing only sunlight, soil, water and carbon dioxide to grow. It means it could be a cheap and low-tech solution to vaccine development. But there are still issues to resolve, including making vaccine on a large scale. Another issue is whether there is any risk from using plants to make the vaccine does the tobacco-relative mean there is nicotine in the vaccine? Dr Tarit Mukhopadhyay, a lecturer in vaccine development at University College London, said: "The initial results look impressive. "However, there are very few plant-based vaccine manufacturers and almost no licensed human vaccines that are currently produced in plants." Denis Murphy, a professor of biotechnology at the University of South Wales, said: "This is an important achievement. "The challenge is now to optimise the plant expression system and to move towards clinical trials of the new vaccine."

Anger and hatred can make us feel happy People are happier if they are able to feel emotions they desire - even if those emotions are unpleasant, such as anger and hatred, a study suggests. The results of the study, compiled by an international team of researchers, found happiness is "more than simply feeling pleasure and avoiding pain". Researchers asked participants what emotions they desired and felt. This was then compared to how they rated their overall happiness, or life satisfaction. The researchers found that while people overall wanted to experience more pleasant emotions, they had the

greatest life satisfaction if the emotions they experienced matched those they desired. The cross-cultural study included some 2,300 university students from the United States, Brazil, China, Germany, Ghana, Israel, Poland and Singapore. "If you feel emotions you want to feel, even if they're unpleasant, then you're better off," lead researcher Dr Maya Tamir from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem said. Surprisingly, the study also found 11% of people wanted to feel less of positive emotions, such as love and empathy, while 10% of people wanted to feel more neg-

ative emotions, such as hatred and anger. Dr Tamir explained: "Someone who feels no anger when reading about child abuse might think they should be angrier about the plight of abused children, so

want to feel more anger than they actually do in that moment." She added that a woman who wants to leave an abusive partner but is not willing to do so may be happier if she loved him less, for

example. Dr Anna Alexandrova, from the University of Cambridge's Wellbeing Institute, said the research challenges how people think of happiness. This study nicely calls into question a traditional measure of happiness that defines it as a ratio of positive to negative emotions, she said. But when it came to unpleasant emotions, this study assessed only anger and hatred, which Dr Alexandrova said is a limitation. "Anger and hatred may be compatible with happiness, but there is no indication that other unpleasant feel-

ings, such as fear, guilt, sadness and anxiety, are," she said. Prof Tamir said the research does not apply to those with clinical depression: "People who are clinically depressed want to be more sad and less happy than other people. That only exacerbates the problem." She said the study sheds light on the downsides of expecting to always feel happy. "People want to feel very good all the time in Western cultures. Even if they feel good most of the time, they may still think that they should feel even better, which might make them less happy overall."

Your Guide to Skin Health The skin is the largest organ of the body and performs many functions that are necessary for our survival. The skin is the body's first line of defence and forms an impermeable barrier to harmful bacteria and parasites that are constantly trying to enter the body. The skin also provides a protective barrier against the harsh Ultraviolet radiation that is a constant threat to our survival. The skin is also a part of the waste disposal system of the body and eliminates wastes such as CO2 and urea. Saunas are useful for removing toxins because of this function of the skin. The skin is also our means of communication with the world around us. It has receptors and nerve endings that can read pres-

sure, touch, temperature and pleasure. Without the skin, it would be impossible for the body to regulate the body’s temperature. When the body is cold, blood vessels in the skin expand allowing warm blood to flow to the surface and keep us warm. And when the body is cold, the skin produces sweat that evaporates and cools the body. The skin reacts with sunlight to produce Vitamin D, one of the most important hormones for preventing skin cancer as well as other types of cancer. An effective way to keep the skin healthy and prevent premature wrinkling is to drink at least 2 litres of water daily. Water is essential for maintaining the elasticity of the skin and prevent wrinkles. The skin also

The skin absorbs substances that common in contact with it. We weigh nearly 2 kg more after a shower from water absorbed through the skin (Avoid weighing yourself immediately after a shower!). It follows that creams, lotions and other cosmetic products applied to the skin are directly absorbed into the body. Cosmetic products made from chemical products will damage the skin and destroy the protective functions of the skin. Cosmetics with more natural ingredients are preferable to chemical cosmetics.

fats from Coconut oil, Almond oil, avocados, and butter. Lack of essential fats is known to speed up skin

wrinkling and ageing. Avoiding chemicals on the skin is also important for keeping the skin healthy.

Peanut allergy treatment 'lasts up to four years' by Katie Silver An oral treatment for peanut allergy is still effective four years after it was administered, a study has found. Children were given a probiotic, with a peanut pro-

tein, daily for 18 months. When tested one month later, 80% could tolerate peanuts without any allergic symptoms and after four years, 70% of them were still able to eat peanuts with-

out suffering any sideeffects. Food allergies have risen dramatically in recent decades, with peanut allergy one of the most deadly. Lead researcher Prof

Mimi Tang, of Murdoch Childrens Research Institute in Melbourne, said half the children were consuming peanuts regularly while others were only eating them infrequently. "The importance of this finding is that these children were able to eat peanuts like children who don't have peanut allergy and still maintain their tolerant state, protected against reactions to peanuts," she said. Prof Tang said it was the first time a treatment for peanut allergy had been shown to be effective for this long. The probiotic used is called Lactobacillus rhamnosus, which has been associated with preventing certain allergic symptoms. When is it safe to eat peanuts? There is often confusion about when peanuts are safe as the guidelines used to advocate avoidance Peanuts are now thought to be safe in pregnancy If there is no family history of allergies or eczema then health officials say peanut butter and other ground or crushed nuts are OK after six months If there is a heightened risk then parents should consult a doctor This research suggests careful introduction of peanut may help such children, but parents should not do this on their own No child under five should eat a whole nut The Australian research team now wants to assess

whether the treatment has improved the children's quality of life, as some 250 million people worldwide are affected by food allergy - a number which has more than trebled in the last 20 years. Peanut allergy, which is one of the most common causes of death from food allergy, has increased at the greatest rate.

Prof Tang said the findings, published in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health, suggest "the exciting possibility that tolerance is a realistic target for treating food allergy". She added: "This is a major step forward in identifying an effective treatment to address the food allergy problem in Western societies."

COME AND JOIN US! It’s the perfect time to consider joining Find A Spanish Property as a property associate, as property prices are on the rise, and the market is blossoming. 2016 was a positive year for the real estate market with prices having bottomed out the year before with modest price rises. Things have really kicked in during 2017, in strong contrast to the recession period that kicked in during 2008 and 2009. Official government figures confirm that prices are rising this year, and outside the cities of Madrid and Barcelona, Alicante Province which features the Costa Blanca, and the Murcia region with the Costa Calida tourist area, are two of the biggest areas on mainland Spain which are seeing substantial rises in demand along with price increases. The cranes are back with new homes being built by the coast, and the re-sale market continues to rise, fuelled by low interest rates in Spain. Statistics show that demand for homes from British buyers is still high, despite pessimistic fears last year over the Brexit factor, coupled with purchasers from across Europe, and even further afield. Recent surveys show that the majority of British people living in Spain are aged 65 and over, and website statistics confirm that older British nationals with no mortgage on their UK property are still very much looking at Spain as their area of choice to buy a holiday home, or even somewhere to retire to. It’s a great time to get involved in becoming a seller of real-estate in Spain, especially since most of the cowboys disappeared thanks to the recession nearly a decade ago. Galicia Coast Holiday Guide restaurants from Ribadeo and Ortigueira in the north via A Coruña and the Costa da Morte and then south to the area known as the Rías Baixas. Although Galicia is good to visit all year round, the best time to go is from June to September. However, even during the hottest months of the year, be prepared for rain, which can be heavy and, at times, persistent. Praia das Catedrais, Ribadeo In Galician, Praia das Catedrais means “beach of the cathedrals” and, as you walk along this beach and through the arches and craggy domes sculpted into the rocks by wind and sea, it is easy to see why. When the tide is low, and the weather holds, it’s possible to spend hours exploring the sea caves. In summer (1 July to 30 September) and Easter week, numbers are controlled and it’s vital to book a visit to the beach (free) at ascatedrais.xunta.gal.

Lush green valleys and rugged mountains, sheer cliffs and wild, frothing, slate-grey seas. Bagpipes, baroque cathedrals and the smell of grilled seafood. The architectural grace of Santiago de Compostela and the industrial churn of Vigo. Galicia, the north-west corner of Spain, is a diverse region, but amid the variety there are two constants: first, it’s one of the best places to eat seafood in the world; and, second, its wild landscape, seemingly more Scottish than Spanish, is the most beautiful on the Iberian peninsula. Galicia is also large, about three-quarters the size of the Netherlands, and so for this guide we’ll travel along its coast, picking out some of the best beaches, coastal towns and seafood

Porto do Barqueiro O Barqueiro and Estaca de Bares O Barqueiro, a small, tranquil fishing village of multicoloured houses, is the perfect place to pass the afternoon staring out at the bay while sipping a nice glass of albariño, Galicia’s most famous grape varietal. From here it’s only a 15-minute drive north to Estaca de Bares, the most northerly point of the Iberian peninsula. Its 19th-century lighthouse is a quiet place from which to appreciate the uninterrupted views of the Bay of Biscay and the relentless ferocity of the Atlantic.

Praia das Catedrais

Santa Maria do Campo, Viveiro Viveiro Set amid rolling hills covered with pines and eucalyptus trees, Viveiro is on the estuary of the river Landro. It is a picturesque place, with walls that have withstood pirate attacks and plagues, and springs that have attracted countless Santiago pilgrims. Wander through its idyllic squares, its grand entrance gates and over its medieval bridges. Covas beach is also only a short walk from the town centre. Praia de Xilloi, O Vicedo Replete with dunes, imposing cliffs, and fine white sand, this kilometre-long beach is one of the best in Lugo province. The turquoise waters, although brisk, are not too dissimilar to the Caribbean. The beach has parking, showers and restaurants nearby and is a good place for families.

Sleeping in a lighthouse: a unique experience Lighthouses have something special. It might be for the almost hypnotic power which symbolises the sea, but lighthouses capture our fantasy and our romantic feelings. Perhaps, you have also dreamt about sleeping in one of these lighthouses that have guarded the shores and protected sailors for hundreds of years. Today, fulfilling that dream is not impossible and sleeping in lighthouses and touring them is becoming a trend.

If you are one of those who feel happy while beholding beautiful sunsets, starry skies and the waves breaking against the cliffs, sleeping in a lighthouse will indeed make you happy. By travelling around the world (the US, Australia, Chile or many other countries in Europe), it is possible to come across lighthouses that also double up as accommodation as if they were a hotel; you will be amazed by their beauty, originality and the value of their surroundings. The Region of Valencia hosts some of the most charming lighthouses on the Mediterranean coast and you may soon be able to sleep in some of them. For the moment, do not hesitate to visit us because the lighthouse tourism is a must. The lighthouse in Tabarca is one of the most beautiful lighthouses in the province of Alicante. It is located on the island of Tabarca, the only inhabited island in the Region of Valencia. It was first lit in 1854 and it now hosts a biological laboratory. The lighthouse in Cullera dates back from 1858. It is located in the Cape of Cullera, in the province of Valencia, and it is one of the most important lighthouses in the Valencian coast. It cannot be visited as of yet. The lighthouse in Peñíscola is located in the province of Castellón and has a spectacular location at 56 metres above the sea level. The lighthouse is perfectly integrated in Peñíscola's old town. It cannot be visited for now but the views in its surroundings are astonishing. It is foreseen that after some time, some of these and other lighthouses will also turn into hotels and the dream of sleeping in a lighthouse will become a reality in the Region of Valencia too.

Play with fire in La Cordà de Paterna Gunpowder and fire in a dance that has deserved to be declared a Festivity of National Tourist Interest. La Cordà de Paterna (Valencia) is much more than shooting fireworks. If you are looking for experiences that make your heart dance, you have to come on the last Sunday of August. The Cordà de Paterna is a special Festivity of National Tourist Interest that displays gunpowder and fire. With more than a century of history, the Cordà is not only about firing crackers, it is a way of feeling and living the festivity as well as a way to defend the values that Paterna's ancestors transmitted. Festivities in Paterna mean activities around the fire: castles of fireworks and mascletaes (firecrackers), cracker passacaglias, the Fire Culture Week, the traditional peça or bouet… They all lead to the festivity culmination: La Cordà. It is celebrated on the last Sunday of August. Thousands of people will come willing to behold a unique event in the world for its magnitude and spectacularity. The technique developed by the shooters was learned throughout generations and it is essential for a non-stop show in which the man has to keep a graduated balance and in which he dominates the fire thanks to his ability. “Cohetódromo” (rocket/cracker ring), do not forget that name. It is the place where magic happens. In a bit more than 20 minutes, around 350 people will shoot more than 70,000 crackers and will create a collective show including fire, smoke, lights and noise that is difficult to describe. Make the most of your visit to Paterna. The area is mainly covered by farmlands and offers the possibility to enjoy its tranquillity and traditions in an easy way. Paterna's symbol is the Tower but you must also check out the caves, its natural areas and the Pottery Museum, among others.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

Come on! Who doesn't like Len Goodman after his judging years on Strictly Come Dancing or fronting some very good documentaries on subjects like dancing or the history of Titanic? Check out the simply awful Partners in Rhyme on BBC 1, and you'll end up hating him and every single aspect of this horrendous drivel served up as the latest Saturday TV stinker. Fans of Ant & Dec on a Saturday morning on ITV will remember their Wonky Donkey rhyming game featuring celebrities that lasted a few minutes and it was a laugh. Partners in Rhyme is a sub-standard rip-off with as much fun as checking out the nightlife in Pyongyang. It just might be passable as a daytime filler in sheer desperation, but psychiatric help is badly needed for the BBC boss that ordered up front, a dozen episodes of this thirdrate trash. Parlour games can work great on TV (remember Give Us A Clue), but this embarrassing nonsense with cheap graphics pro-

Len's Saturday Shocker

duced by an eight-year-old; third-rate personalities (Anton du Beke excepted) that not even Celebrity Big Brother would consider; and forced humour through clearly-rehearsed (badly) ad-libs made this an endurance test that would even eclipse having a wisdom tooth removed without the use of anaesthetic. I'm sure that if somebody sneezed in the studio, Len Goodman would have keeled over as he looked in

the first stage of rigor mortis or in a level of discomfort that he badly needed to go to the toilet to avoid soiling himself fronting this torrid turkey of a show. I may have missed it, but there were no signs of a studio audience, despite the strains of laughter appearing during transmission. Thank heavens then that any sort of humanity were spared having to sit through the recording of this abject nonsense. The BBC should

act fast, hopefully by pulling the rest of the series and wiping all the episodes, so that further viewer torture is terminated.. The BBC though never admits a mistake, so Partners in Rhyme will, I'm sure, be back tomorrow. Check it out, if you dare, as it now has toppled Harry Hill's Stars in their Eyes from three years ago as the worst Saturday night show I have ever seen. I hope that Len Goodman's career can

recover after this, with a format that even his old mate, the legendary Sir Bruce Forsyth, would have struggled to make anything out of. Brucie's passing last week brought a concise and precise tribute from his friend, the ex-TV boss and showbiz agent Michael Grade. He said that in public affection and the quality of his work, he was there with Morecambe and Wise, and that's where Grade's list

ended. Bruce had some duds in his great career, but he was given a break in the late fifties when old showbiz folk like Val Parnell and Lew Grade ran the old ITV company, ATV. Bruce's agent Billy Marsh twisted the arms of the ATV moguls to give him a shot fronting the biggest show around, Sunday Night at the London Palladium, after the first host Tommy Trinder quit over a money row. They took a flier and Bruce became an overnight star(I wasn't even born yet!) as he worked out what television was all about, and for the best part of 60 years he was just like an easy-going friend that viewers could rely on. He made it all look easy, which countless people have discovered it isn't. Only the great Bob Monkhouse was in Bruce's hosting league. Bruce loved to promote new talent, and wouldn't it be nice if the TV companies could give a few people the kind of shot that he got nearly 60 years ago? The talent is surely out there, especially on the comedy circuit.

Festival Tales: Edinburgh At 70 Saturday - BBCTwo Sunday - BBCOne Jack Whitehall traces the history of the Edinburgh Festival, as the annual event reaches its 70th anniversary. First conceived in 1947 as part of the `healing process' for a Britain emerging from the misery and austerity of the Second World War, the Festival was considered a bastion of idealism, and the Fringe was brought into existence in the same year, bringing with it a form of creative anarchy. Jack reflects on the many ground-breaking encounters between artists, musicians, writers and performers that the Edinburgh Festival has facilitated over the years, and examines the role it has played in revolutionising art and culture both in the UK and abroad. Includes contributions by Ian McKellen,

DRIVERLESS CARS – THE ROAD TO NOWHERE? “The message from motorists is clear – talk less about ‘tomorrow’s world’ and more about real world benefits.”

Drivers fail to see that automated and driverless vehicles will deliver promised benefits according to a new study. When asked about what benefits will be delivered, the second most popular response was ‘none’ as more than a third of respondents could not identify any advantage that would follow future advances. In identifying their feelings about automotive technology the top six issues were negative like the wrong focus or conceding control. Motorists are three times as likely (44 per cent) to be scared of autonomous vehicles due to the loss of personal control than likely to see the positive opportunities. Researchers spoke with 2,000 motorists for Continental Tyres, the leading tyre and technology manufacturer, as part of its Vision Zero, a commitment to reduce traffic fatalities worldwide. The top views about driverless cars are that people are becoming too lazy and reliant on technology (37 per cent), and there are too many risks associated with technology like being hacked (36 per cent). Mark Griffiths, safety expert at Continental Tyres, said: “Drivers have to contend with immediate real world issues like congestion, the cost of motoring and environmental impact, and in some instances technologies being developed now are not being identified as a solution for those issues – yet they absolutely are. “Future advances will transform motoring and technology businesses like ours need to explain how present challenges will be reduced or eliminated – like congestion, costs and environmental impact. “The message from motorists is clear – talk less about ‘tomorrow’s world’ and more about real world benefits.” When asked what issues should be prioritised by automotive and technology companies, half of road users agreed it should be improved road safety. This was followed by almost 50 per cent of people saying more economical vehicles using existing and new fuels and 47 per cent saying less traffic on the roads. Mark Griffiths continued: “It is the job of automotive technology manufacturers, like Continental, to inform drivers the immediate and near future gains from the exciting work being done. In the past the benefits from some advances have been self-evident, such as tyre pressure monitoring systems or anti-lock brakes. “Road users today see safety as a top priority, and we strive to raise awareness about the importance of fundamental issues, such as tyre safety and tread depth.”

BEAULIEU IS THE SMART CHOICE FOR SIMPLY SMART “Simply Smart is one of the most laid-back and cheerful events of the year and always has a strong following. The cars may be small but they are big fun for their owners...is always an unmissable opportunity to compare cars and talk.”

Beaulieu’s Simply Smart will celebrate this miniature motoring marvel with a cheerful display in the grounds of the National Motor Museum on November 12th at the final rally of the season. The seventh Simply Smart will showcase examples of the cheeky ForTwo, roomy ForFour and racy Roadster as owners park up, chat with fellow drivers and enjoy all of the features of one of the south’s leading visitor attractions. Beaulieu Events co-ordinator Hesper Stratford said: “Simply Smart is one of the most laid-back and cheerful events of the year and always has a strong following. The cars may be small but they are big fun for their owners and the rally is always an unmissable opportunity to compare cars and talk about all things Smart.” Some of the smallest and cheekiest cars on the roads, many Smart cars are personalised by their owners with vivid custom colour schemes and stick-on graphics, meaning that Simply Smart is always a colourful affair. You can be sure to see ForTwos, ranging from first-generation examples right up to the latest third generation. Look out for front and rear engine versions of the familyfriendly ForFour and expect to see a selection of highly sought after Roadsters in the varied line-up. Simply Smart is traditionally held on Remembrance Sunday and a two-minute silence

will be held during the event at 11am, which visitors are invited to take part in. A highlight of the rally is the People’s Choice Awards, when visitors can vote for their favourite Smart car of the show. The owner of the Smart with the greatest number of votes will be presented with a commemorative Beaulieu trophy and special Autoglym prize, before leading a cavalcade of the most popular cars throughout the attraction. For participants arriving on the day in a Smart car and taking part in the rally, tickets cost £10 an adult and £5 a child and include access to all of the Beaulieu attraction. Tickets can be bought on arrival or in advance online at www.beaulieu.co.uk/events. Participant access is from 9.30am when the Brabazon Restaurant will serve hot and cold drinks and breakfast snacks. Respected Figure Dies Heartfelt tributes have been paid to one of the most popular figures in Scottish golf, Barrie Douglas, who died at the age of 69 after being taken ill whilst at the La Manga course. Barrie, a former Scotland boys’ international and in his heyday a multiple club champion at Scottish courses, died with his family by his bedside at Cartagena hospital. He had been acting as Scottish Golf’s European boys’ captain at the recent team championship in La Manga when he was rushed into hospital last

month and diagnosed with a critical lung condition. Barrie performed various selection and captaincy roles at boys’ level, playing a key close role in the career development of a host of young players over the years. He was also a GB&I selector for The R&A from 2009-2016 and the flag flew at halfmast during The Boys’ Amateur event last week at Nairn following his death. Blane Dodds, CEO of Scottish Golf, said: “I know that Barrie was highly respected and very popular.”

The Magical “Hole In One” I recently had a round of golf at La Manga, and besides beating my friends, I was reminded of a very elderly achievement to get a “Hole in One” on the course 32 years ago, writes JOHN FARMER. That’s prompted me to right about getting that magical moment in your locker, something that sadly has eluded me over the years! More by the way on that La Manga achievement in a moment. A hole in one is something golfers can fail to achieve in a life of playing the great game. Getting that magic moment requires a large chunk of luck and some skill (you have got to hit the ball in the right direction) to achieve it, so it is a little wonder it takes experience and a lot of practice on and off the course. Once you get the first one it may or may not come as a surprise to learn that the odds on getting another are not always as great as you may think. Checking statistics and search engines for other Hole in One oddities, I’ve come up with these facts that may surprise you. Norman Manley, an amateur from California, claims 59 career aces. These were over a period of 15 years. Mancil Davis has 51 aces and is regarded as the world recordholder for holes-in-one by a professional (Davis

is a PGA of America member who briefly played on the PGA Tour). Holes in One are more common than you may think a Hole in One is achieved somewhere in the world every 3,500 rounds of golf on average. There are more golfers over the age of 50 who get Holes in One and you hear of them in Spain because they are retired here. But sixty percent are made by golfers over this bicentennial age. On January 13th 1985, Otto Bucher holed his tee shot on the Par 3 12th on the North Course at La Manga, which prompted this article. It is proven that fourteen percent of golfers who achieve a Hole in One go on to make another. This gives us all a modicum of hope when we see that car up for offer in a ProAm or the Chip and Spin girl on the courses on the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida(or hope that we are 86% to avoid the bar bill). Just to round off (no pun intended), here is something interesting about that unique ball strike. In America if you have a Hole in One, you’re expected to buy everyone a drink in the clubhouse. However in Japan, it is traditional to share your good luck by buying your playing partners expensive gifts. In Spain everybody should buy you a drink!!

Marc’s British Bid

Moto GP championship leader, Spain’s Marc Marquez is sounding ominous because he’s been telling reporters that he has a sweet feeling with his 2017 Repsol Honda bike. That's bad news for his rivals, given the reigning world champion already holds a 16-point title lead heading into this Sunday’s British MotoGP at Silverstone. "We will to keep at this level. What I don’t want to lose is this feeling with the bike that I have now," said the Spaniard, who was just 0.176s from victory in Austria after seeing a finalturn attack repelled by Andrea Doviziosio. "What I tried on the last lap was because I started to feel the limit again. For example, in Brno I saved a lot of crashes and I start to feel again this sweet feeling with the bike. This is the most important for me. “Step by step, we’ve been

45

www.thecourier.es

able to find a good base for our bike and this is very good, as one of my goals is to always be there at the front and be very consistent at all tracks and in all conditions. "In Brno and Austria we are able to be there always: Wet, mix, dry, hot, cold." Marquez's only premierclass Silverstone win was in 2014 and he was forced to settle for fourth last season after a running off during a thrilling battle with Cal Crutchlow, in a race won by compatriot and early season pace-setter Maverick Vinales. "I know that Yamaha is working really good there and Maverick won [for Suzuki] last year there. But anyway, I’m feeling good with the bike now," he said. "It’s a bumpy track. We need to find a very good setup. Last year I was competitive. Just I choose the incorrect option with the front tyre. I choose too soft."

Dovizioso, now Marquez's nearest championship challenger, was sixth at Silverstone last year. Vinales and Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi, third and fourth in the world championship, have dropped 24 and 33 points respectively behind Marquez. Fifth in the standings is Marquez's team-mate Dani Pedrosa, yet to win at Silverstone, but on the podium in 2012 and 2013. "The team is working well,” added Marquez. “In Austria we overturned a difficult weekend to get a positive result in the race. Now we go to a difficult track which is bumpy and where the weather is always unstable!” "We'll be aiming to improve and be focused because last year was difficult so we must be out lapping and learning about the tyres and the setup to be prepared for Sunday's race."

Top Dog Nadal

Spain’s Rafa Nadal reflected on a "special" day on Monday after returning to world No. 1 in the ATP men's singles rankings for the first time since July 2014. He knocked Britain's Andy Murray off the top spot, who has been out with a hip injury. This year, Nadal claimed a record 10th title at Roland Garros and reached the final of the Australian Open, where he lost to Roger Federer in five sets.

"Hello guys, just want to say thank you very much to all of you for your support," Nadal said in a video posted on his Instagram account. "It has been a very good year, and today is a special one. Going back to number one, I'm just very happy." Nadal has broken records on the ATP Tour this year -winning the Masters 1000 title in Monte Carlo for the 29th time-- the most wins by any player at a single tournament in the Open era.

The Spaniard also claimed wins this year at the Madrid Open, where he tied Novak Djokovic’s Masters of 30 career titles, and at the Barcelona Open, where he won his 10th crown. Most recently knocked out of the Cincinnati Masters quarterfinals by Nick Kyrgios. Nadal has been preparing for the final Grand Slam of the year, namely the US Open, which starts in New York on Monday.

Garbine On Fire Spain’s Garbine Muguruza goes in as the player to beat at next week’s US Open, as the Wimbledon champion won for the first time on American soil at the weekend to beat Simona Halep to take the Cincinnati tournament. Last year, the Spaniard won the French Open final over Serena Williams, and it seemed she was ready to be a consistent big winner on tour. Instead, she struggled through a feeble rest of the season. After a disappointing claycourt season in 2017, Muguruza put doubt behind her once again by winning Wimbledon. Suddenly, she’s

the hottest player on the tour, winning big matches and establishing herself as the clear favorite to win the US Open. Surprisingly, the 23-yearold has never made it past

the second round in New York (though she's played it just four times), but a great run or title could push her to the world number one slot to join her campatriot Rafa Nadal at the top of the world.

Torrevieja Success

The boys team from the Torrevieja Tennis Club had a successful weekend at the Spanish children’s championships by finishing third in the event in Barcelona. The youngsters defeated the Barcino de Barcelona team three-one in the third/fourth place play-off tie. During the tournament, the Torrevieja boys defeated three opponents, before falling to the Valencia Tennis Club, three-one in their semi-final clash.

Emotional Evening

Bale’s Big Start

SABADELL 0 ELCHE 0

BARCELONA 2 REAL BETIS 0 Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde dedicated his team's Sunday La Liga victory over Real Betis to the victims of Spain's terrorist attacks. On an emotional night at the Nou Camp, both clubs paid tribute to those caught up in the atrocities in the city and at Cambrils before the game, and the Barca players wore the city's name, rather then their own, on the backs of their shirts. Speaking afterwards, Valverde told a press conference: "We have to keep going with a sense of normality. We wanted to win the game for all the victims of the attack." Betis defender Alin Tosca's own goal and a second from Sergio Roberto inside three first-half minutes secured the points for the home side, who might have won far more comfortably despite Neymar's departure and the absence of Gerard Pique and Luis Suarez through injury. Barcelona travel to Alaves tomorrow evening (Saturday).

Friendly Feast

A Familiar Story

DEPORTIVO LA CORUNA 0 REAL MADRID 3 Gareth Bale scored one goal and set up another as Real Madrid started their La Liga title defence with a opening victory at Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday night. Madrid were without suspended Cristiano Ronaldo for the trip to the Riazor, but it made little difference to the European champions as they reclaimed their familiar place atop the standings at the end of the opening weekend. Bale notched the opener in the 20th minute and another close-range tap-in, this time from Casemiro seven minutes later, saw Real in control before the half-hour was up. Bale then assisted Toni Kroos for Real's third goal just after the hour to complete the scoring, although there was still time for some late drama with Depor striker Florin Andone missing a penalty before Real saw captain Sergio Ramos sent off. Real start their home account this Sunday night against Valencia, who opened with a win against Las Palmas.

Elche started life in Segunda Division B with a reminder of what haunted them at times last season, namely their inability to do the business in front of the opponent’s goal. The first half was a fairly lucklustre affair with the first clear chance for the Ilicitanos coming in the 32nd minute, when Nino set up a chance for Javi Flores, who headed wide. The visitors started to control things more before the interval, with Nino and Iván Sánchez creating opportunities for Elche. The Ilicitanos dominated possession in the second half, yet moves kept breaking down in the final third of the field. In the 75th minute a shot from outside the penalty area from Manuel Sánchez came close for Elche, and Sory Kaba, on as a substitute, could have clinched it with five minutes remaining. No team wants to lose an opening day fixture, and with the maxim that an away point is always a good point, and the fact that they kept a clean sheet, meant that this was a solid start for Elche. Coach Vicente Mir will be aware of what has to be worked on, and his side open up their home account against CF Badalona this Sunday evening with an 8.00 pm kick-off.

Torrevieja Signings

Forward Boost

CD Torrevieja and CD Montesinos fought out an entertaining friendly at Torrevieja’s Nelson Mandela stadium last Saturday which finished three-all. Two of Torry’s goal came from Jorge Beltran, whilst the highlight for Monte was a strike from Carlos Ventura. Torry’s next match sees their coach Pedreno take his side down the coast to take on his former side UD Horadada tomorrow (Saturday) at the Ikomer stadium, with a 6.30 pm kick-off. Monte’s friendly this weekend against CD Almoradi has been cancelled, but the side were due to play away at neighbouring Algorfa last night.

CD Torrevieja’s longest-serving player Vicente Boix (pictured above) has signed a new deal with the club. The 26-year-old defender, son of the club president, will now start his eighth season at Torrevieja. Manu Amores, who scored in last Saturday’s friendly against Montesinos (see left column), has joined CD Torrevieja for the third time. The 24-year-old rejoins Torry from SD Formentera where he started in 31 matches last season as the team gained promotion to Segunda Division B. Murcia born and bred midfielder Mani (pictured below) comes to Torrevieja from regional side CD Minera, with the 24year-old having spent 11 seasons as part of the Real Murcia squad.

CD Almoradi have strengthend their firepower for next season, including the coup of re-signing Villajoyosa’s Jaime Vicedo “Hucha”, who was voted best striker in Preferente Group Four last season in the Golsmedia awards. It’s a return to the club for 28-year-old Hucha (pictured with president Paco Albaladejo), who spent two seasons with Almoradi, before having two years with Villajoyosa. The Santa Pola-born player revealed that he opted to go back to Almoradi as opposed to accepting an offer from CD Torrevieja. The other striker joining Almoradi is Fran Ribera (pictured below), who comes to the club from FC Bahía de Santa Pola.

Paris St-Germain forward Neymar will contest the legal action brought against him by former club Barcelona. Barcelona want an eight point five million euro renewal bonus Neymar received for signing a five-year-deal - just nine months before his move - returned. The Brazil international made a record 222 million euro move to PSG this month after buying out his contract. "The player's formal defence will be filed in due course," read a statement from the 25-year-old and his lawyers. Neymar also seemed to suggest Barcelona owe him money following his Nou Camp exit, rather than the other way round. His statement added: "Regarding the bonuses owed for the execution of the contract of 2016, it is also necessary to inform that the player has already initiated the formal procedures of collection before the competent courts." On Tuesday, Barcelona had demanded the return of the "already paid" renewal bonus, plus an additional ten percent for delayed payment. "The club demands the player return the already paid sum as he has not completed his contract," it said. "The club also requests Paris St-Germain take on responsibility for the payment of these fees if the player cannot do so himself," the Catalan club added. Paris St-Germain later responded to say they were "surprised" by Barcelona's statement, adding: "The club repeats that, along with Neymar Jr, it strictly respected all applicable laws and rules and can only regret, once again, the attitude of FC Barcelona." The lawsuit was submitted on August 11th to the Labour Tribunal in Barcelona. Following the transfer, Barcelona announced the club was withholding a further 26m euro loyalty bonus from the player. Nyman criticised the directors of his old club on Sunday after scoring twice (pictured below celebrating) on his home debut for PSG in a 6-2 win over Toulouse. “I spent four beautiful years there and parted happy," said the 25-year-old. "But with [the board], no.” "For me, they are not the people who should be there, for the direction of Barca. Barca deserve much better."

A frustrated Cristiano Ronaldo could leave Real Madrid before the end of the month, a source close to the player has revealed. Ronaldo, who scored a stunning winner for Real in a two-one friendly against Italian side Sampdoria on Wednesday night (pictured celebrating), is currently serving a five-match ban for his ill-tempered reaction to being sent off in the first leg of the Supercopa de Espana this month - a decision he branded 'incomprehensible' earlier this week. Because it was a friendly, the suspension did apply to Ronaldo. The Real side featured largely young and second choice players, apart from Ronaldo. Sergio Ramos, Marco Asensio and Lucas Vazquez all featured for Zinedine Zidane’s side but didn’t last the full game at the Bernabeu. Ronaldo, meanwhile, was on the pitch from start to finish and netted what proved to be the winner in the 33rd minute. Off the pitch though the speculation is continuing over the striker and his anger over the suspension. "For now, he’s just concentrating on playing," a source was quoted as saying in the Manchester Evening News. "He is angry about the five-game ban, but he is working just as hard with the team. However, we cannot guarantee whether he will stay or leave. "We’ll see what happens in between now and August 31st." A return to Manchester United is believed to be the most likely destination for the four-time Ballon d'Or winner. Meanwhile, Lionel Messi's father Jorge has met with Manchester City representatives to discuss a possible move for his son to the Etihad, The Sun reports. Jorge Messi (pictured below) met City's director of football Txiki Begiristain, who was at Barcelona until 2012 to talk through a possible move. With Messi stalling on signing a new deal at the Nou Camp, City could potentially snap up the Argentine for nothing next summer when his current contract expires. There is also the option of them triggering Messi's buyout clause, which is believed to be around 270 million euros. City is thought to be the natural destination, given the player's relationship with Begiristain and the club's chief executive and fellow ex-Barca man Ferran Soriano. It was also manager Pep Guardiola who nurtured Messi from starlet into superstar when he was Barca manager between 2008 and 2012. City deny that they have made an offer for the fivetime Ballon d’Or winner. Meanwhile, Yahoo Sport has claimed that Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho could make a public statement about his desire to join Barcelona in order to try and force a move through.

SO FAR, SO GOOD

SHOWDOWN IN VEGAS Britain's Chris Froome established a ten second advantage in La Vuelta a Espana going into yesterday’s sixth stage of the race. Froome is aiming to become the third man to win a Vuelta crown in the same year as his Tour de France success. The race arrives in Alicante Province this weekend before heading off to the Murcia region (see front page).

ROOT’S HOME

After destroying the West Indies in just three days of the first test at Edgbaston, the sides meet again at Headingley today. England captain Joe Root will be leading out his players in front of his home Yorkshire supporters, whilst Jason Holder’s side face an uphill task to even put up a fight, let alone beat a rampant England outfit, who have an unbeaten track record at Leeds since 2000 against the Windies.

The early hours of this Sunday morning will see one of the most hyped clashes in fight history take place at the TMobile Arena in Las Vegas. The biggest star in UFC history and UFC Lightweight Champion, ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor, takes on arguably the greatest boxer of all time and five-division world champion Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather. Labelled ‘The Billion Dollar Fight’ this is a bout few people believed would happen, with many critics claiming that this fight is nothing more than a money grab, but this is not the case. ‘The Notorious’ one brings something unique to the table, and his unorthodox style will certainly be something that Mayweather has not yet seen. McGregor is an awkward, hard-hitting southpaw, who prides himself on his ability to read his opponent and time

his shots to perfection, but Conor McGregor is not resting on his laurels. Mayweather is one of the greatest defensive boxers the world has ever seen, and more importantly, he is one of the hardest fighters to land a clean shot on. This was apparent in his unanimous decision victory against Manny Pacquiao. Mayweather vs Pacquiao was billed as the ‘Fight of the Century’, but many believed this fight was too little, too late. Nevertheless, the eight-division world champion found it extremely difficult to land cleanly on Mayweather, landing only 19% of the 429 punches he threw. This fight looks set to break all Pay Per View records, with many oddsmakers believing that this fight will exceed five million PPV buys.

DANIELLE’S FINAL BLOW

Danielle Waterman has been ruled out of the England side for tomorrow’s Women's Rugby World Cup final against New Zealand due to concussion (live on ITV, 8.45 pm kickoff). The fullback was forced off towards the end of the first half of her side's semi-final win over France and the Rugby Football Union confirmed that she would not recover in time for Saturday's showpiece. World Cup-winner Waterman started all four of England's matches en route to the final at the Kingspan Stadium in Belfast, scoring twice in the pool stage win over Italy.

"It's disappointing to lose Danielle ahead of final; she has delivered outstanding performances throughout the tournament and has been a highly-valued member of the squad," England coach Simon Middleton said in a statement. "However we have a number of strong options available to us ahead of Saturday's final against New Zealand." Meg Jones replaced Waterman against France and contributed to England's victory, making a try-saving tackle to deny Julie Annery before scoring herself late on.
