HONEY TRAP BACKFIRES

A

Dutchman and his Spanish partner who tried to extort 100 thousand euro from a local businessman over intimate photos and videos saw their plot fail, as their “mark” reported them to the Guardia Civil. The 55-year-old Dutch

national and his 52-year-old partner thought they would get some easy money out of their victim from an unnamed Alicante Province town, after she tried to rekindle an old relationship with the businessman, despite the fact that he was now married.

The plan was to blackmail him with sexually explicit videos and photos which were recorded on the woman’s mobile phone during the recent period when the “old fires” between them were “restoked”. The material made for perfect footage for the blackmail plot, and the Dutchman and his partner eventually contacted the man and asked him to hand over 100 thousand euro or else the material would be sent to his wife. A series of conversations also saw them demand that he travel north to Lloret de Mar in Girona to hand over the money. The victim refused the long journey, but offered 60 thousand euro and also asked that the couple sign a document that confirmed that all the material had

been wiped. They agreed to a meeting in a café area of a well-known Alicante Province hotel, but the hitch for the duo was that the man had already gone to the Guardia Civil and told them everything. Plain-clothed officers placed themselves in the café as the couple arrived, with the erstwhile extortionists sitting down at the table where the businessman was already waiting for them. He cooly conversed with them as the Guardia waited to pounce, and produced the document that they had talked about, and which the woman duly signed. As soon as she put pen to paper, the officers arrested the couple, and took them off to the local Guardia building, before putting them in front of a judge on extortion charges.

BLUE ZONE COMING? P

arking meters are set to be introduced in parts of the Orihuela Costa, under proposals being drawn up by Orihuela council. The Información newspaper reports that the Chamber of Commerce supports the idea in principle, so long as it is backed up by a survey which looks into the implications of installing the meters and their ideal locations. Proposed changes to local parking laws administered by Orihuela council feature a section on the possibility of extending the socalled Blue Zone to sections

of the Orihuela Costa. Información also quotes council sources as stating that a study would be undertaken and that the plans would only look at introducing charging at busy holiday periods like Easter and the summer peak season. The Aquamarina area is being touted as a possible site for the first batch of meters, which would be erected on roads close to the beach. No timescale for the feasibility studies has been declared, let alone when the parking meters would be put in.

A night bus service from Alicante-Elche airport to Alicante City began operating this week on the back of criticism that off-peak taxi services have not been good enough to cope with the volume of passengers arriving at the facility during the summer season. The cost of the bus, operated by Vectalia, is being subsidised by the Valencian

government and will see the service running hourly from the airport from 1.00 am. Other key areas like Elche, Benidorm, and Torrevieja remain without overnight public transport links to the airport. Larger cities like Madrid, Barcelona, and Palma are the only other Spanish airports to offer any kind of night bus service.

Kick Them Out! A group of Dehesa de Campoamor residents have called for the area to become part of the Pilar de la Horadada municipality, because they are unhappy about the service provided by Orihuela council. Around a hundred people gathered for a meeting (photo from the Información newspaper) to protest about what they claim is lack of cleaning, and the state of disrepair hitting the roads and pavements. The meeting listed a string of complaints including not enough rubbish containers; poor streetlighting; and the condition of the beaches. One speaker talked about the possibility

of Dehesa de Campoamor being annexed by Pilar de la Horadada, and this appeared to bring almost universal approval. One of the organisers of the meeting, José Antonio Pardo, said that the mood for annexation was a strong one. as residents see that as the only solution to their

problems, which have steadily got worse over the last four years, despite taxes and payments being made to Orihuela council. Orihuela Costa residents also took advantage of a large captive audience at last Sunday's start of La Veulta at Campoamor's La Glea beach, to stage a protest over the way they see Orihuela council treating the area. Some of the world's top cyclists, as well as Orihuela mayor Emilio Bascuñana, were greeted by jeering protestors and a variety of banners criticising the authority, as well as placards calling for Dehesa de Campoamor to transfer to Pilar.

Two new parking areas in the Villananitos and Lo Pagán areas of San Pedro del Pinatar have been set up by the council, in addition to new signage and the erection of bollards to stop cars accessing pedestrian areas. The car parks are located in Calle Manila, in Villananitos, with 95 spaces, whilst Calle Las Palmas, is the new area in Lo Pagán, with 120 spots next to the football ground.

New signs have been put up for motorists in order to, as the local police put it, to “cut down on traffic jams and accidents”, whilst planters and bollards have been installed in areas like the Esplanade at Lo Pagán as well as the Plazas de España and La Constitución in San Pedro. These have the double duty of improving security as well as better defining what are pedestrian-only areas.

Torrevieja council is still trying to find an architect to sign off on the safety work on the city's Teatro Municipal, which the authority closed two years ago. It's now led to a situation where the mayor has been forced into asking the Architects Association to see if they can provide somebody to fill the gap. At the end of June, Torrevieja mayor José Manuel Dolón said that the health and safety issues had been dealt with, but under the law, a work certificate needed to be signed off by the original architect, Antonio Marquerie, for the building to get an operating license. Marquerie refused to put

pen to paper, with the council threatening legal action. Now Dolón says that they are looking to get another architect, as well as hiring a builder for some "finishing touches, which includes external and internal painting work, in addition to cleaning. "We are not happy about the long closure," added

Dolón. "A number of architects were approached to help finish everything off, but nobody agreed to do the work". Once again the council hinted at the theatre opening "very soon", but again were unable to specify a date that they were looking at, as a string of deadlines have come and passed.

Missing Foreigners

Torrevieja has seen the biggest fall in foreign residents registered on the municipal padron anywhere in Alicante Province, according to figures for 2016. In total, over 30,000 new foreign residents signed on the padrons in Alicante Province in 2016 according to analysis from the National Institute of Statistics (INE). However, over 38,000 either left Spain or failed to re-register, showing a net

8,000 fall in non-Spaniards in the region. Popular tourist and retirement areas have seen the most dramatic reductions, with Torrevieja seeing a dramatic drop with almost 11,000 foreigners leaving the municipal padron according to the official INE figures. Alicante City came next with a fall of almost eight thousand foreigners, with reductions of over 2,500 for Orihuela, plus drops for Guardamar (890) and

Rojales (488). In contrast, San Fulgencio and Pilar de la Horadada both recorded increases in non-Spaniards on the padron last year of just over 400 each. No specific nationalities are referred to by the INE, with some local councils doing much better than others to keep their padron figures as high as possible, as the statistics then determine how much funding they get from central and regional government.

Weekend Landings

79 North African immigrants were detained in just two days last weekend off the coast of Alicante Province, making it one of the busiest periods of the year for the refugees making the dangerous journey to

Spain via sea. 13 people were spotted in a boat some 20 kilometres off the Torrevieja coast and were taken by the maritime service to Cartagena. Empty boats were discovered ashore in the Benidorm

and El Campello areas, with most of the travellers eventually being rounded up, including five men from Algeria and Morocco who were walking towards Alicante City on the N-332 highway.

Unacceptable Condition

Turtle Rescued A turtle that got caught up in plastic rubbish off an Orihuela Costa beach has been transferred to the Valencia Oceanogràfic institute, which specialises in looking after sea turtles and returning them to familiar waters. Some tourists spotted the animal in difficulty off Cala Bosque and a team from the Ambumar lifeguards patrolling the area released the turtle and took it ashore. Despite some slight injuries, it was in a healthy condition, and was transferred north to Valencia City.

Citrus Scammers Held

The ex-Torrevieja mayor Eduardo Dolón says that the state of the Molino del Agua municipal park is a disgrace, and has called on the council to do something about it. The leader of the Partido Popular opposition group on the authority (picture from Objectivo Torrevieja) slammed the way that the park had been neglected

over the last two years and said that the area had been "forgotten by the Mayor José Manuel Dolón". Eduardo Dolón had been invited to inspect the area by residents who are also concerned about the amount of rubbish that has been dumped there. Meanwhile, residents around the Acequión beach

area in the south of Torrevieja have complained to the council about the garbage piling up in the streets due to the lack of waste containers during the peak holiday season. Concerns also involve the stench of the rubbish, which is also a unwelcome area for mosquitoes and cockroaches.

Smoke Effects

An Almoradi father and his son have been arrested by the Guardia Civil's rural crime team ROCA, based in Torrevieja, after allegedly conning 350 thousand euro out of local lemon farmers. The Spaniards, aged 51 and 24 years, ran a scam

through two companies they owned, which sold lemons to supermarket chains. Farmers in Benejúzar, Almoradí, Bigastro, Daya Nueva, Orihuela and Murcia sold lemons to the duo, who only paid them

modest deposits and left them promissory notes which they did not honour. The Guardia Civil also discovered the men in possession of a variety of firearms in their cars, as well as their home and business addresses.

A 12-year-old boy and a Guardia Civil officer had to be treated for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in a Torrevieja apartment on Sunday afternoon. The blaze was caused by a mattress being set alight in a flat on the third floor of a four storey apartment on Calle San Pascual, with Torrevieja and Almoradi firefighters bringing the outbreak under control after half an hour. The 56-year old mother of the child was treated for shock.

Blazing Vehicle

Another car arson attack has hit Torrevieja, with an attempt to torch four vehicles parked on the patio of a house in the La Florida area of the city. The incident happened on Calle Pío Baroja on Sunday lunchtime, with nobody at home at the time. Neighbours called the

emergency services as they noticed a thick plume of smoke rising from the property, which was visible over a large part of Torrevieja. One of the cars was completely burnt out (photo from the Informacion newspaper), with investigators believing the fire was started deliberately

following reports that shortly beforehand a rubbish container had been set alight close by. It’s the latest of a string vehicle attacks, which recently saw a woman arrested for her alleged involvement in car arson incidents in the Mar Azul area of Torrevieja.

Smugglers Rumbled

Air Bombing Recalled

Torrevieja mayor José Manuel Dolón led a tribute last Friday in memory to the 19 victims of an air attack on the city launched by Italian planes 79 years ago during the Spanish Civil War. The craft were under the command of the dictator Mussolini, who was assist-

ing General Franco's rebel forces, with eight children losing their lives in an attack that targetted civilians. Dolón and members of his council government team laid a wreath in the port area of the city, with symbolic red carnations being thrown into the

water. The mayor confirmed that his authority was still trying to get a memorial built at a cost of around 15 thousand euro. However, the future of the project would depend on it getting enough votes in a plenary meeting of the council.

Canyon Tragedy

Two Brazilian nationals were arrested at AlicanteElche airport last Friday as they were trying to smuggle in eight and a half thousand grams of liquid cocaine which would be worth around half a million euro on the open market.

Guardia Civil officers noticed a 25-year-old woman acting suspiciously, in the arrivals area and both she and a man in his thirties were carrying suitcases as they walked towards the exit, and deciding not to declare anything.

After interviewing the couple about their reasons for coming to Spain, the Guardia opened their suitcases and discovered containers of what should have been toiletries, but were in fact filled with liquid cocaine.

A 57-year-old British walker died from a heart attack last Friday after hiking through a canyon in the northern part of Alicante

Province. The unnamed man had been climbing up a gradient with his daughter at the Barranco del Infierno,

when he fell ill. Rescue services were able to revive him, however, he suffered a fatal heart attack en route to a medical centre at Orba.

Fatalities Increase

The death toll from last month’s twin attacks in Catalunya rose to 16 on Sunday. A German woman died 10 days after being injured when a van ploughed into pedestrians in Barcelona. The 51-year-old had been left in a critical condition after the attack on Las Ramblas boulevard. That incident has now killed 14 people, and two

others died during the driver’s getaway and in a separate car and knife assault in the Catalan coastal resort of Cambrils. The news came after hundreds of thousands attended a peace march in Barcelona on Saturday. Holding placards and banners which read “I am not afraid”, the march was led by emergency workers, shopkeepers and residents

of the city’s Las Ramblas boulevard, where a van was deliberately driven into pedestrians. Members of Spain’s Islamic community marched alongside King Felipe and Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. An estimated 500,000 people gathered in Barcelona on Saturday evening to rally against terrorism.

Children Surrendered

Mother-of-two Juana Rivas who has been in hiding with her two children since July in a defiance of a court custody order, has handed them over to the Guardia Civil ahead of a new deadline last Monday. In July, Rivas was ordered by a Granada court to hand over her two children, aged three and 11, to their Italian father, Francesco Arcuri, but she defied the order and hid from the authorities. That followed a court order giving him custody of the boys, after Ms Rivas had taken them back to Spain from Italy last year without

his consent, with allegations that Rivas had been the victim of domestic violence at the hands of her partner, something that he has

strongly denied. She now faces charges of failing to comply with a court order as well as child abduction.

Horrific Ordeal

A British teenager was discovered naked on a Mallorca beach, and told the Guardia Civil that she had been raped by three men. The woman, 19, from Scotland, said she was sexually assaulted on a stretch of beach in front of the Punta Ballena strip in Magaluf.

The woman has since identified a photograph of one of the men who allegedly attacked her, with the picture thought to have been on a mobile phone she was carrying. The young woman claimed she had screamed for help in the horrific attack over the course of late

Friday night to Saturday morning, but no one came to her aid. Reports from Mallorca suggest that her assailants may well have been British. The woman told police she had gone to the beach with one of the men, with two of his friends waiting there when she arrived.

Traffickers Arrested

The National Police have detained 24 members of a prostitution gang that preyed on young Nigerian women, which operated across Spain, including the Northern Costa Blanca resorts of Benidorm and Gandia. The victims, mainly vulnerable young Nigerian women, were recruited in Nigeria and trafficked to Spain via Italy. Once in Spain they were forced into prostitution, mostly in Benidorm and Malaga, but also Madrid, Barcelona, Soria and Gandia. The National Police arrested the gang members across the country, but its leader was taken into custody in Helsinki in Finland, as part of an co-ordinated by Europol. The probe began when authorities were alerted that two Nigerian women who

were seeking asylum could be victims of human trafficking, Europol said. "Investigations revealed the existence of an organised crime group operating in Spain that had a big infrastructure in Nigeria, as well as links in Niger, Libya and Italy." The women were smuggled to Spain where they were told to seek international protection and asylum "so that they could work for the criminal organisation without problems in the event of being identified by the police," Europol said. The group provided the victims with fraudulent documents to request asylum, it added. The National Police recently busted another gang that was forcing transsexuals into prostitution after luring most of them to Spain from Venezuela.

Fruity Concerns

The European Commission has approved the Spanish government’s request to withdraw nearly 20,000 tonnes of peaches and nectarines from the market due to over production. The aim is try to see prices rise mainly due to the Russian veto on European fruit and vegetables. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, this will bring the total of the quantities recalled from the market to around 40,000 tonnes. Some 21,000 tonnes have already been withdrawn this summer. The 19,550 tons of peach-

es and nectarines will be used to make juice for food banks, which will then distribute them to needy citizens. Of the previously withdrawn 21,000 tonnes, 18,000 were destined to be processed into juice and the remaining 3,000 were delivered fresh to food banks. “The stone fruit sector is experiencing structural imbalances due to excess supply that has been occurring every summer since 2014, even before the closing of the Russian market, the ministry stated but added the situation has got worse this year.

Seeing Red

More than 20 thousand people were drenched in red pulp after hurling tons of ripe tomatoes at each other in the traditional La Tomatina street battle in the northern part of the Valencia region on Wednesday. Extra security measures were taken at the fiesta in Bunol this year following the vehicle attacks in the Barcelona area last month, with some 700 officers deployed.

The party saw 160 tons of tomatoes offloaded from trucks into crowds jamming the town's streets for the hour-long battle on Wednesday. Participants, including many tourists, donned swimming goggles to protect their eyes. The event, which costs 12 euro to attend, was inspired by a food fight between local children in 1945 in the tomato-producing area.

The 20 thousand euro target to rebuild and extend the Rojales-based Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre’s crumbling perimeter wall has been reached, with work completed now completed on the structure. Co-founders Sue and Rod Weeding started a fund-raising campaign in March to get seven thousand euro to extend the height of a planned boundary wall upgrade to provide better protection for the equines from the bitterly cold winter winds and blistering summer sun. That followed a successful campaign last year which saw 13 thousand euro raised to fund the initial boundary upgrade, which was prompted by a string of break-ins at the centre and intimidatory behaviour relating to the rescue of Oscar, a horse that arrived starving and dehydrated.

Over 200 people contributed to the campaign, with donations coming from as far away as America, Canada, Thailand and Singapore. There was even one extremely kind donor, who wished to remain anonymous, who last month

donated the final 800 euro needed to hit the overall fundraising target. “Never in our wildest dreams when we started the rescue centre did we ever imagine that so many people would support us and be so passionate about what we do,” said Sue.

Live Long And Prosper The world's oldest man is Spanish and lives in the village of Bienvenida in Badajoz province, having become the longest living male after the recent death of Israeli, Yisrael Kristal. Francisco Núñez Olivera, aged 112, has always lived in Bienvenida since he was born there in late December 1905. Until he was 107, Francisco still went for walks around the village on his own, although when he became tired he would simply stop on street corners to chat to the other locals. Now in a wheelchair, but still healthy, Francisco lives with his 81-year-old daughter María Antonia. He mostly puts his long life down to genetic factors – Francisco's brother Luis, who lives in Asturias, is 95 and his sister Jacoba, who also lives in Bienvenida, is 93 – but he has also enjoyed a healthy diet and the loss of most of his teeth with age has not changed this. Francisco mostly eats vegetables and pulses he grows himself on his allotment – which he has tended to and lived off since earliest adulthood – and enjoys a 'decent glass of wine' regularly. María Antonia says his extremely elegant demeanour earned him the nickname of 'Marchena', after the famous flamenco singer of the same name from Sevilla. The 'real' Marchena staged a concert in Bienvenida 91 years ago, just days before Francisco returned from his military service in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on the northern Moroccan coast, appearing in the village impeccably dressed in a tailored suit and looking incredibly chic, healthy and handsome – something that did not go unnoticed among those he had grown up with. Francisco has always been a kind, cheerful character with a 'good heart and good habits', says María Antonia, and even long past his 100th birthday, would regularly work on his allotment before going to the local bar to watch the football with his friends. Even at 107, he would nip out to talk to people when he became bored with the match, says his daughter. She says her father has always been keen to educate himself, and was thrilled when, aged 98, a successful cataract operation meant he could once again read the newspaper every day. Other than the two cataract operations, and having a kidney removed aged 90, Francisco has never been in

hospital in his life. And as well as the oldest man in the world, Francisco is also the oldest-ever Spanish service veteran – he fought in the Rif War in Morocco, and also in the Spanish Civil War. María Antonia says her father's main secret has been 'living life how he wants to live it' and 'following a healthy lifestyle'. “There's nobody else like me,” Francisco says proudly,

revealing that he has been receiving numerous letters from as far away as 'Germany, Australia, New York and México' asking about him and requesting a photo of him. Whenever people visit him, he always says: “I'm still here,” and as they leave, he asks, “Are you off already?” Francisco's 113th birthday will be on December 13th. Happy birthday Francisco!

Which Currency Should You Invest In? Keith Littlewood, International Financial Adviser at Blacktower, Costa Cálida This is a subject I raise in every case when I discuss investment strategy. It is all very well looking at how best to diversify a portfolio and getting the best returns possible for the least amount of risk. Usually, you would be happy if your investment beat inflation or, even better, got returns of 7%, 8%, 9% or more. These returns can be meaningless if you do not get the currency question right. Here is an example: Client A lives in Spain and invested £100,000 (in sterling) in 2015 and his portfolio has done very well and is currently worth £125,000. On paper it looks great, but, this client is actually worse off than he was in 2015. The exchange rate was 1.36 €/£ when he invested and now it is it 1.08. The £100,000 was worth €136,000 in 2015 and his £125,000 portfolio is now worth €135,000. This is actually a €1,000 loss. Had this client invested in euros in 2015, his portfolio could now be worth €170,000. Of course, this can happen in reverse but when assessing investment strategy, currency valuations can add a

You have probably heard of acupuncture for humans, but the ancient Chinese therapy is growing in popularity among pet owners too as a holistic supplement to traditional veterinary care. Just like with people, small needles are inserted into the animals' skin at defined points to try and relieve pain through stimulated blood circulation. In cats and dogs it is most commonly used in musculoskeletal and chronic pain ailments such as arthritis or gastrointestinal issues. It emerged several decades ago but remains an unconventional and alternative therapy method that most vets don't use. The International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS) now has about 1,900 members, and they held a conference in Australia last week with practitioners from 21 countries. But like with acupuncture in human medicine, a great deal of scepticism surrounds the practice in pets. A 2006 study said "there is no compelling evidence to recommend or reject acupuncture" in veterinary medicine because of inconclusive and limited research. But thousands of owners and practitioners swear the procedure is making a difference to the quality of pets' lives especially elderly and chronically ill animals. One mainstream theory in acupuncture research is this temporary pain relief stems from the release of a natural painkiller called adenosine around the insertion point. Critics maintain that the improvements owners see are a transfer of a "placebo effect" to the observer. Lara Sypniewski, a clinical professor of small animal medicine at Oklahoma State University, is a vocal advocate of the practice. Speaking to the BBC, she explained she first sought the

treatment for animals that weren't able to use traditional pain relief medication because of pre-existing liver and kidney conditions. "Our animals' role in our lives has changed tremendously they used to sleep outside and now the husband is being kicked out bed to make room for the dog," she said. Budget Arrivals

Turn Back The Clock An Alicante Province car dealership has been accused of fiddling the mileage on vehicles, which were then sold all over Spain. Two managers and a mechanic from an unnamed outlet in Cox have been questioned by the Guardia Civil, who started their investigations in February after the traffic department in Guadalajara Province got suspicious over a large number of work vans being restored in the area. Officers dropped in to the Cox dealership last month, and discovered that 76 vehicles with fiddled odometers had been sold across 21 provinces in the country, with one example showing a

400-thousand-kilometre reduction. The Guardia said that with the changed mileages, the vehicles were

sold at inflated profits, and that the three men were being investigated for fraud and forging documents.

British Brekky Nearly 50 million foreign visitors have flown to Spain in the first seven months of 2017, which is almost a 20% hike on the figures over the same period last year. The majority of arrivals

have been on budget airlines like Ryanair, Easyjet and Vueling who have accounted for 52.4% of all air journeys. Britain accounted for almost 37% of all low-cost

journeys at 9.66 million passengers, which is a rise of over 16% compared to 2016. Germany and Italy were the next highest low cost users at 11%.

The annual fiesta week in Roda came to an end last weekend, with one of the highlights being the regular chance for the Spanish residents to try out a traditional

British breakfast for the princely sum of two euro. The big fry-up of eggs, sausage, baked beans and bacon went down especially in the San Javier municipality village.

Falling Foul Of The Law Torrevieja mayor José Manuel Dolón has told the city’s local police to get tough on dog mess fouling the municipality’s streets, after only eight tickets were issued against irresponsible owners last year. That’s despite warnings issued towards the end of 2015 by the council that a major push would be made against people that don’t scoop the poop off the streets and pavements. Dolón says that with the summer high season coming to an end, officers will be looking to warn and punish dog owners that fall foul of the local laws. He added that though the majority of owners followed the rules, there seemed to be an increase in fouling, which he attributed to the increase in pets locally,

though he produced no figures to back up the claim. The mayor stated that the new push would begin this month and he described as “shameful” that only eight prosecutions had taken place last year for people

not picking dog mess. Dolón added that there would not be any specific campaign as such, but that he had reminded the police that dealing with offenders ought to be part of their normal patrols.

Woodland Mystery

A Granja de Rocamora woman who was reported missing in the Les Monts de Corsier area of Switzerland, has been found in a wood suffering from amnesia, some three days after a search began for her. 23-year-old Lucía Cristo was discovered on Tuesday lunchtime by Swiss police,

after she went missing in the early hours of Saturday morning. She had been working as a nanny in the country for a year. Her father told the Informacion newspaper that she was taken to hospital to have tests carried out on her, and that her car was found on a mountain road

last Saturday about a kilometre away from where she was found, and appeared to have been involved in an accident. She had some wounds on her arms, but otherwise was physically uninjured. Her family flew out to Switzerland on Tuesday to follow first-hand the search for Lucía.

Keep To The Rules

A mother and daughter had to sleep on the floor of Alicante-Elche airport last month when budget carrier Ryanair rejected their hand luggage for their return flight, for being half an inch too big, according a report in the Manchester Evening News. Tania Alston, 51, and her daughter Malaika AlstonEkpei, 12, had to spent 14 hours in the airport after they were told the bags they had taken with them on holiday were too big to go back. As they got to the departure gate, Ms Alston, who had a bigger bag than her daughter, was waved through with no problem. But Malaika was stopped, had her bag measured, and was told the case was 0.7inch (2 cm) too deep, and they'd have to pay £50 to put it in the hold. Ms Alston couldn't afford the £50 fee before pay day the next day, so started putting her daughter's items into her own case instead. But another member of staff then stepped in and said her bag was too big as well, and they would have to pay £100 to put it in the hold.

Forced to miss their 9.10pm flight on August 10th, they had to spend the next 14 hours at AlicanteElche airport, sleeping on the hard floor covered in holiday clothes. The next morning, and with money in her account, Tania forked out £385 on flights with Jet2.com - which had no problem with their baggage. Ms Alston, from Levenshulme, said she tried to reason with staff - offering to leave their luggage at Manchester Airport on arrival until she could pay the fee. But she was told that was not possible.

A Ryanair spokesman said: 'All customers agree to adhere to our terms and conditions of travel at the time of booking. This customer's bag exceeded our maximum cabin bag dimensions and they were given the option of checking the bag in to the hold upon the payment of our gate bag fee, but refused to do so and did not board the aircraft. We have repeatedly urged our customers to comply with our cabin bag rules, which are being continuously flouted, resulting in boarding delays during this peak summer season.'

The End Of The Long Hot Summer

The start of the week saw a marked change to the warm summer weather, with Alicante-Elche airport’s weather station reporting a record wet August day on Tuesday. There were also some spectacular bolts of lighting for tourists and residents to watch last Tuesday evening including the example above at Playa La Cura in Torrevieja (pictures from Proyecto Mastral). Just over 42 litres per square metre of water was collected at the airport in a 24-hour period, which according to the the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), meant that it was

the wettest August day recorded at the facility since it opened 50 years ago. The previous August best for the airport was in 1974 when gauges showed 32 litres of water per square metre. The southern part of Alicante Province appeared to escape comparatively lightly despite the heavy Tuesday cloudbursts, with weather stations at Elche and Torrevieja recording returns of just over 20 litres per square metre, in stark contrast to northern areas like Javea accumulating 70 litres of rain per square metre in 24 hours. The most dramat-

ic figure came in Mutxamel, which recorded 40 litres of rain per square metre in just two hours. Rain also battered parts of the Murcia region on Tuesday, but in contrast to the winter storms that hit the Mar Menor area causing damage to places like San Javier and Los Alcazares, the bulk of the severe falls were inland around Murcia City. Forecasters are predicting a sunny period of weather with temperatures in the upper twenties, whilst night-time highs will be around a pleasant 20 degrees, in contrast to the recent humid nights.

ADVICE: John wanted to ask about Windows Defender ADVICE: Max wanted to know how to open compressed files antivirus solution from Microsoft

Q

Hi, I have bought a new HP laptop with windows 10 on it,the shop transferred Hi Richard, I have been accessing the catastral registry which invites you to all my info from my old laptop to my new one, before I had windows download both ordinary and compressed files to see documents filed at the defender, antimalware bytes&super antispyware but the shop put on my registry. Unfortunately, I do not recognise the three-digit executable codes on newone, Avast free antivirus &CCleaner, he told me he thinks it is as good as the end of these files, and when I try to use Acrobat reader, for example, it what were on before & won`t slow the laptop as much, just wondered what your opinion does not always work. I believe in Windows one is able to open the full details of an exeis as usually you recommend windows defender etc Johnny. cutable programme, but can this be done with files and programmes on another web Hi Johnny, I think you must have me confused with someone else, I have never site?Kind regards Max

Q

A

recommended Windows Defender, in my opinion it’s a terrible antivirus solution. In terms of anti-virus software, I would recommend that you do your own research of course rather than simply taking the opinion of an IT guy, I have written many articles about what (at the time) would be good choice to protect your computer, you can read more at …. https://www.bluemoonsolutions.es/antivirus-review/

A

Hi Max, it’s likely that the compressed files are .zip (or similar) format, this means that they are compressed to make downloading them quicker. Once downloaded you will need decompression software to extract the files so that you can view them (usually with Adobe Acrobat Reader), there are a number of pieces of software that you can use, I would recommend 7-zip, available from www.7-zip.org free of charge.

…where we disclose the independent sources that I use to base my advice on. A quick search on av-test.com looking for home users using Windows 10 shows Avast (free edition) as being able to detect 100% of 0-day malware attacks (0-day attacks are new previously unseen viruses)compared to Windows Defender only managing 99% - Microsoft seem to have upped their game, the last time I checked (back in September 2016), Windows Defender scored a terrible 88.1%! Of course, on the face of it this looks like a small difference now, but given that both are free why would you even consider using the less efficient solution?

Chicken Provençal With Olives & Artichokes

Ingredients

2½ kg chicken, jointed 8 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 200ml white wine 4 tbsp olive oil 1 tsp thyme leaves 10 ripe plum tomatoes, halved 1 tbsp tomato purée ½ tsp herbes de Provence 1 tbsp fennel seeds 500ml chicken stock 1 celery stick, finely diced 15 button or silverskin onions, or small shallots, peeled 285g jar chargrilled artichoke hearts, drained 100g pitted green olives Method Tip the chicken into a large bowl or dish and add the garlic, wine, 2 tbsp oil and the thyme. Season with 2 tbsp flaky salt and mix well until completely coated. Cover and chill for at least a few hours, but preferably overnight. Heat grill to high. Arrange the plum tomatoes on a tray, cut-side up, drizzle with the remaining 1 tbsp oil and grill

for 15 mins, or until charred. Set aside. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large casserole dish or flameproof roasting tin. Scrape the marinade off the chicken pieces back into the bowl and fry the chicken in batches for about 15 mins until the skin is golden and crisp – watch out, the oil has a tendency to sputter. Remove the chicken from the dish and pour off the oil. Place the dish back on the heat, add the tomato purée and cook for 2 mins, then add the herbs, fennel seeds, remaining marinade and chicken stock. Bring up to the boil, add the grilled

tomatoes, then simmer gently for 20 mins. Heat oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 4. Nestle the chicken pieces back into the dish, then stir them in to coat in the sauce. Scatter over the celery, button onions and artichokes. Bring up to a simmer, pop the lid on, then transfer to the oven and cook for 1 hr. Remove the lid and stir in the olives. Season to taste and leave everything to settle for 15 mins before serving straight from the dish. Prep: 15 Mins Cook: 1 Hr 40 Mins Serves: 5-6

Lamb, Apricot & Shallot Tagine

Ingredients 1 large leg of lamb, bone in (about 2kg) 600g shallot halved if particularly large 400g small apricot, halved and stoned 85g whole skinless almond 2 preserved lemons, flesh discarded, peel and pith finely chopped 1 tbsp ras el hanout 1 tbsp clear honey 150ml hot chicken stock Small pack coriander, leaves picked couscous and natural yogurt to serve For the marinade 4 tbsp olive oil 4 garlic cloves, crushed

1 tbsp ground cumin 2 tbsp clear honey 2 tsp ground cinnamon 2 tsp ground ginger 2 tsp coriander seed pinch of saffron strands Method Slash the lamb leg all over and put in a big food bag, or in a large casserole dish. Smash the marinade ingredients together using a pestle and mortar. Add some black pepper and rub all over the lamb. Marinate overnight, or up to 24 hrs. Heat oven to 140C/120C fan/gas 1. Sit the lamb in a big roasting tin, scraping off any leftover marinade on the top.

Cover the tin with foil, pinching the edges to seal. Cook for 6-7 hrs, basting every hour or so, until the meat is incredibly tender. Remove the roasting tin from the oven and increase oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Pour the juices from the lamb into a measuring jug, cool slightly and skim off the fat. Put the shallots in the tin with the lamb and toss to coat in some of the juices. Roast for 15 mins, then add the apricots and almonds. Whisk the cooking juices with the lemon, ras el hanout, honey and stock, then pour over the lamb and roast for another 20 mins. Rest for 10 mins, then scatter over the herbs and serve with couscous and yogurt. Prep: 30 Mins Cook: 7 Hrs 30 Mins Serves: 5-6

Gin & Tonic Cake Ingredients For the cake 250g salted butter 325g golden caster sugar 4 eggs 250g self-raising flour 75g natural yogurt 2 juicy limes, juice only 75ml gin 150ml tonic water 1 tsp juniper berries, lightly crushed For the icing 200g softened butter 400g icing sugar 2 tbsp milk zest of 3 limes (using up those you've juiced, above) To decorate 2 limes, zested then 1 cut into thin wedges to decorate 1 tbsp granulated sugar lemon sherbets Âź cucumber, peeled into ribbons party straws Method Heat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas mark 4. Grease and line 2 x 20cm cake tins. In a freestanding electric mixer, or using an electric whisk, beat together the butter and 200g of the sugar until pale and fluffy, for around 5 mins. Add the

eggs one by one, making sure they are fully incorporated before adding the next one. If the mixture looks like it might split, add a tablespoon of your flour, then fold in the rest of the flour. Mix the natural yogurt with the juice of one of the limes and 50ml of the gin, then add this to the cake mixture to make a thick and silky mixture. Split the mixture between the cake tins and bake for 35 mins until a skewer comes out clean. Meanwhile, make the syrup. Put the remaining sugar, tonic water, juniper berries and juice of one lime into a saucepan over medium heat. Once the sugar has dissolved, bring to the boil and cook for 5-7 mins, until it’s a thick syrup. Cool for 5 mins, strain then pour in the remaining gin and set aside. Once the cake is out of the oven, allow to cool for 5 mins, then prick all over with a skewer, then liberally spoon the syrup mix over both of the cakes. Allow to cool completely in the tin. To make the buttercream, beat the butter until soft, then add the icing sugar, a little at a time to avoid a sugar cloud! Once fully incorporated, add the milk and the zest of the limes. To assemble, place one of the cake layers on a cake board,

cover with 1/3 of the buttercream then sit the second cake layer on top. Cover this, too, in just a thin coat of icing then put the cake in the fridge for 30 mins to firm up – this will make it easier to get the rest of the icing on smoothly. Use the remaining buttercream to cover the top and sides of the cake. To decorate, mix the lime zest with the sugar. Sprinkle this over the cake and finish with lemon sherbets, lime slices, cucumber ribbons, party straws and any other gin & tonic paraphernalia you fancy. Prep: 1 Hr Cook: 45 Mins Serves: 12-15

Pizza and crisps makers urged to reduce fat to tackle childhood obesity Public health bosses are urging food manufacturers to make chips, pizzas, crisps and burgers healthier, opening a second front in efforts to tackle childhood obesity. Public Health England wants to go further than the focus on cutting sugar by demanding firms that make products eaten regularly by children ensure they are far less fattening by reducing the calories in them. The new emphasis on sources of calories from ingredients other than sugar has been prompted by growing concern that children’s waistlines are expanding because they are copying adults by consuming 200-300 calories too many per day. Over 40,000 deaths a year – one in 10 – are linked to people being dangerously overweight, health experts say. PHE will start by investigating how many calories these types of foods popular with children contain and issue what ministers say will be “strong guidance” on reformulating them, and exhort manufacturers and retailers

to act to improve children’s health. “A third of our children leave primary school overweight or obese and an excess of calories – not just excess sugar consumption – is the root cause of this,” said Duncan Selbie, PHE’s chief executive.

The move marks the latest stage of the government’s bid to reduce childhood obesity, which has been heavily criticised by health and children’s groups as too weak. Within weeks of becoming prime minister in July last year, Theresa May watered down what under her prede-

cessor David Cameron was due to be a more robust strategy on the subject. Under May it became just a “plan for action”. The initiative follows what PHE says is the “real progress” achieved over the past year in persuading manufacturers of sugary

foods and soft drinks to cut the amount of sugar in their products. Nestle, Greggs, Starbucks, Kellogg’s and other firms have all pledged to do that, as have the makers of Lucozade and Ribena, and supermarkets such as Waitrose, Sainsbury’s and M&S.

They have done so with nine types of sugary foods, including breakfast cereals, cakes, ice-cream, biscuits and yogurt. But health experts claim that the introduction next April of the sugar levy is as key to why some soft drinks ranges are cutting sugar content as their desire to join the fight against childhood obesity. However, health campaigners warn that the drive to make such foodstuffs less calorific, which also includes sandwiches and ready meals, may fail because companies do not have to take part. PHE’s new calorie reduction plan is “welcome in principle but short on detail”, said Malcolm Clark, the coordinator of the Children’s Food Campaign. “Beyond passing a sugary drinks tax into law, the government has so far provided thin gruel for parents and health professionals keen to see significant progress on tackling childhood obesity.” Prof Graham MacGregor, chair of the campaign group Action on Sugar, said the sugar tax should be extended to confectionery.

Memories of fear could be permanently erased The eternal sunshine of a spotless mind has come one step closer, say researchers working on methods to erase memories of fear. The latest study, carried out in mice, unpicks why certain sounds can stir alarming memories, and reveals a new approach to wiping such memories from the brain. The researchers say the findings could be used to either weaken or strengthen particular memories while leaving others unchanged. That, they say, could potentially be used to help those with cognitive decline or post-traumatic stress disorder by removing fearful memories while retaining useful ones, such as the

sound of a dog’s bark. “We can use same approach to selectively manipulate only the pathological fear memory while preserving all other adaptive fear memories which are necessary for our daily lives,” said Jun-Hyeong Cho, co-author of the research from the University of California, Riverside. The research is the latest in a string of studies looking at ways to erase unpleasant memories, with previous work by scientists exploring techniques ranging from brain scans and AI to the use of drugs. Published in the journal Neuron by Cho and his colleague Woong Bin Kim, the research reveals how the

team used genetically modified mice to examine the pathways between the area of the brain involved in processing a particular sound and the area involved in emotional memories, known as the amygdala. “These mice are special in that we can label or tag specific pathways that convey certain signals to the amygdala, so that we can identify which pathways are really modified as the mice learn to fear a particular sound,” said Cho. “It is like a bundle of phone lines,” he added. “Each phone line conveys certain auditory information to the amygdala.” In the first part of the experiment the team played both a high pitched and low-

pitched tone to mice. But, when the high-pitched sound was played, the researchers also gave the mice a small electric shock to their feet. When the high-pitched tone was subsequently played on its own, the mice froze in fear; no such response was seen when the alternative, low-pitched, tone was played. The team then looked to see if there were differences between the high-pitch and low-pitch tone pathways in the brains of the mice, revealing that, among the mice exposed electric shocks, the connections within the “high-pitched” pathway had become stronger, while the other

pathway remained unchanged. The team found that when mice were subsequently repeatedly exposed to highpitched sounds without the shocks they lost their fear – a process known as fear extinction. “Fear extinction is the psychological basis of exposure therapy used in [treating] post-traumatic stress disorder,” said Cho. But, he said, “after exposure therapy, for example two weeks, the fear relapses or recurs spontaneously.” The new research, he adds, offers an explanation: even after fear extinction, the team found the neural pathway for the high-pitched tone remained strengthened

ADVERTISE WITH US TODAY CALL 966 921 003

in the mice. “Fear extinction is not an eraser of fear memory ,” said Cho. “It just hides the fear memory transiently.” But the team discovered that using a technique called optogenetics, it was possible to truly erase the unpleasant memories. This technique involved the researchers using a virus to introduce genes into particular neurons in the brains of the mice that were involved in the “high-pitch” pathways. The upshot was that the mice no longer appeared fearful when they heard the high-pitched tone. “It permanently erases the fear memory,” said Cho. “We no longer see the relapse of fear.”

Reduce High Blood Pressure With These Foods Berries are packed full of different types of antioxidants. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and involving over 80 000 women showed that consuming about a cup of berries each week reduces the risk of developing high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. Anthocyanin the chemical that gives berries their bright red and blue colours is a powerful antioxidant helping to reduce inflammation. Berries also contain another powerful antioxidant

called Polyphenol that helps keep arteries open. Oats: Oats contain unique antioxidants called avenanthramides, which protect LDL fats in arteries from damage thereby reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. In one study conducted at Tufts University Massachusetts, researchers exposed human arterial wall cells to the antioxidant from Oats avenanthramides and found that the significantly suppressed plaque that causes hardening of the arteries.

Brazil nuts are an excellent source of B-complex vitamins thiamine, riboflavin, folate, pyridoxine

as well as many nutrients and minerals: iron, zinc, potassium, calcium, manganese. Brazil nuts are also

one of the best sources of the powerful antioxidant and mineral - Selenium. Dark Chocolates are one of the richest sources of antioxidants that combat inflammation and prevent disease. The ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) score of food is a measure of the antioxidant strength of that food and chocolates have one of the highest ORAC scores. Dark Chocolate is packed full of the potent antioxidants Polyphenols and Flavanols.

Flavanols stimulate the endothelium of arteries to produce Nitrogen Oxide (NO), a chemical that helps reduce arteries. One published study followed 470 men over a 15-year period and found that chocolate reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease by 50%. Chocolate is also a rich source of the minerals, iron, magnesium, copper, phosphorus, manganese. Call MedB Diagnostics for a full body scan – 965071745, 966189074, www.medb.es

The Surprising Way Your Dreams Could Estimate Your Risk Of Dementia by Rachel Moss If you dream a lot when you sleep you may be less likely to develop dementia, new research suggests. A study by a Swinburne researcher has found that dementia in the elderly can be predicted by measuring rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. REM sleep is the stage of sleep that we pass through before dreaming occurs. The study found that for every 1% reduction in time a person spends in REM sleep, there was a nine-fold increase in the risk of them developing dementia. Author Dr Matthew Pase said the findings point to

REM sleep being a predictor of dementia. During the REM stage of sleep, the eyes move more rapidly and there is increased brain activity, along with quicker pulse and faster breathing. This stage usually occurs about an hour to an hourand-a-half into sleep and then recurs throughout the night as the cycles repeat, the researchers said. For the study, researchers looked at 321 people with an average age of 67 who participated in the US based Framingham Heart Study. During the study, their sleep cycles were meas-

ured. Researchers then followed the participants for an average of 12 years. During that time, 32 people were diagnosed with some form of dementia and of those, 24 were determined to have Alzheimer’s disease. Those who developed dementia spent an average of 17% of their sleep time in REM sleep, compared to 20% for those who did not develop dementia. After adjusting for age and sex, researchers found that a lower percentage of REM sleep and a longer time to get to the REM sleep stage were both linked to a

greater risk of dementia. The results were similar after researchers adjusted for other factors that could affect dementia risk or sleep, such as heart disease factors, depression symptoms and medication use. Other stages of sleep were not associated with an increased dementia risk. REM sleep is the fifth sleep stage and happens before dreaming occurs. The researchers said sleep can be split into the following stages: Stage one: light sleep Stage two: the body

begins to prepare for deep sleep Stages three and four: deep sleep Stage five: REM sleep Commenting on the study, Dr Pase said sleep disturbances are common in people with dementia but “little is known about the various stages of sleep and whether they play a role in dementia risk”. “We set out to discover which stages of sleep may be linked to dementia and while we did not find a link with deep sleep, we did with

REM sleep,” he said. “The next step will be to determine which mechanisms of REM sleep lead to the greater risk of dementia. “By clarifying the role of sleep in the onset of dementia, the hope is to eventually identify possible ways to intervene so that dementia can be delayed or even prevented.” The study was supported by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the National Institute on Ageing and the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke. The full paper is due to be published in the latest issue of Neurology.

It’s the perfect time to consider joining Find A Spanish Property as a property associate, as property prices are on the rise, and the market is blossoming. 2016 was a positive year for the real estate market with prices having bottomed out the year before with modest price rises. Things have really kicked in during 2017, in strong contrast to the recession period that kicked in during 2008 and 2009. Official government figures confirm that prices are rising this year, and outside the cities of Madrid and Barcelona, Alicante Province which features the Costa Blanca, and the Murcia region with the Costa Calida tourist area, are two of the biggest areas on mainland Spain which are seeing substantial rises in demand along with price increases. The cranes are back with new homes being built by the coast, and the re-sale market continues to rise, fuelled by low interest rates in Spain. Statistics show that demand for homes from British buyers is still high, despite pessimistic fears last year over the Brexit factor, coupled with purchasers from across Europe, and even further afield. Recent surveys show that the majority of British people living in Spain are aged 65 and over, and website statistics confirm that older British nationals with no mortgage on their UK property are still very much looking at Spain as their area of choice to buy a holiday home, or even somewhere to retire to. It’s a great time to get involved in becoming a seller of real-estate in Spain, especially since most of the cowboys disappeared thanks to the recession nearly a decade ago. We like to think that we’ve played our own small part in helping to seeing them off, by offering an honest business that people are proud to recommend and that we now want to substantially expand.

Getting Started We will remove the pain and hassle of starting up your own estate agency by setting the all-important website that will market your business. The costs are cut, and you don’t need any experience of running an agency or experience of sales. We can do that for you, but you will need to promote your website and of course to generate new opportunities.

10 Best things to do in New York for Free ported into a different world - a lush public park hovering above the iconic city with beautiful greenery and unbeatable views. 2. Make the most of winter at Rockefeller Center Arguably one of the most famous places to visit in New York, Rockefeller Center will leave you gobsmacked all year round. But there’s no better time to visit than during the festive season, when the square in front of the Center is decked out in thousands of fairy lights, beneath which shoppers try desperately not to fall over on the ice rink. Winter fun continues at the legendary Rink at Rockefeller Center from October until April, 8.30am to 12am, and you can have a giggle at the skaters for free (or nursing a mug of hot chocolate in the window of the Rock Center Café), but if you have a few cents to spare then rent some skates for the evening. 3. Browse the Chelsea Galleries This funky neighborhood boasts some of the coolest art galleries in New York. The streets are lined with a selection of exhibition spaces for all types of art, from sculpture to short film and many of them are completely free to visit. Check out this map to see what's on and where. Chelsea is also a great spot for nightlife, so if you can part with some cash, treat yourself to a cocktail in one of the cool bars in this part of town, many of which are on 27th29th Streets. You'll get a rooftop backdrop to go with your Cosmopolitan at Rare View Chelsea, and a peep inside the Hilton NY Fashion District at the same time. Fancy a transatlantic holiday but you're on a budget? NYC may be notoriously expensive, but it doesn't have to be. From culture and sculpture to bridges and boats, here's our pick of free things to do in New York. 1. Admire the view from the High Line This re-imagined railroad trestle has been one of the hottest New York attractions since the opening of its first section in 2009. Now, there are entrances all along the street between Gansevoort Street and West 34th Street. When you climb the stairs, you are instantly trans-

Public Library High Line

4. Be a bookworm at the New York Public Library All those honking yellow taxis and bright lights on Broadway making your head spin? Get away from the chaos and duck into one of the 88 branches of the New York Public Library for a relaxing afternoon exploring their collections of books, DVDs and photography exhibitions. Many libraries also have computers for free public use. One of the most famous NYPL branches is the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building on 5th and 42nd Street (5th Avenue subway station), which, since it's featured in tons of film and TV productions, has become an essential place to visit in New York for fans of everything from Ghostbusters to Sex in the City. 5. Take a stroll across the Brooklyn Bridge With separate lanes for cyclists and pedestrians, the bridge is the best spot in the city for a (free) bird's eye view across the cityscape. It also makes a rather romantic Valentine's Day or date spot, one that won't break the bank and is pretty unique. Plus, when you get to Brooklyn, you can check out Brooklyn Bridge Park, and join your sweetheart on the carousel here, for extra brownie points. 7. Go for a ride on the Staten Island Ferry This historic boat ride is meant to provide free passage from lower Manhattan to Staten Island. However, for many, this has become a fun, free way to spend an afternoon enjoying the sights from the New York harbour without shelling out big bucks for a cruise. Pack a jumper though, as it can get a bit breezy out on the open waters! Catch it at the Whitehall Ferry Terminal in Manhattan, just next to Battery Park. 8. Plan a day trip to Governor’s Island After nearly two hundred years as a military base, Governor’s Island is fast becoming a hip New York City hangout. Open from May to September, this is the perfect spot to embrace NYC's greener side, with 30 acres of public parkland. Get on board with Free Bike Mornings (up to an hour, Mon to Fri, 10am - 12pm) to explore the idyllic, car-free paths without spending a dime. 2017 sees the island's former officer's quarters and outdoor spaces open up to exhibitions, thanks to the OpenHouseGI program, so there'll be plenty more free treats in addition to the art fairs and Jazz-style lawn parties that happen in the summer. 9. Wander around Socrates Sculpture Park There's no shortage of art in the city, but at Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens, you can combine culture with a picnic in the sunshine (weather permitting) for a different kind of day out in NYC. This unique venue displays interesting sculptures and multi-media installations which you can come and stroll around for free. So grab some doorstopper-style deli sandwiches, a frisbee and a comfy rug and settle down for lots of low-cost fun. 10. Save your Friday evenings for the Museum of Modern Art It's one of the must-see museums of NYC but if you’ve dreamed of hitting up this famous artistic landmark and don’t want to shell out the $25 admission fee, wait until Friday between 4pm and 8pm for UNIQLO Free Friday Nights. As the name suggests, fees are waived during this time, allowing guests access to the museum’s collections, including exhibits, galleries and films. There are often long queues, so wait until the initial rush has died down and try your luck after 6pm.

Thursday 14 September, 2017 Punta Prima Star and Planetgazing.

Features of neo-muralism art are spread all over the streets of Torreblanca, proudly showing the work of our local contemporary artists.

Torreblanca (Castellón) is the place to be for anyone interested in urban street art. Many of the walls have been taken over by urban artists and their creations. This is so that we can consider it like a museum of urban art in the open air. Note down on your journal the route to follow: Calles Aljub, La Torre, Manrique de Lara and Jaume I de Torreblanca Square. And do not forget the local ‘trinquet’ (court to play ball), already involved in the first phase of the Citric project. And even the moment you are reading this, there may be more walls in process since the people of the municipality are offering their own walls to be included. The artists who have taken part in the contest of urban art Citric are San, Spok, Xèlon, Isaac Mahow, Dulk, Sebas Velasco, Pincho, Laguna, Sabek, SRG, Uriginal, Kenor, DEIH, Emilio Cerezo and Hombre López. All of them have been forced to leave their work routine and take a risk turn knowing that their work is becoming a tourist destination. The ideas have been born from their inspiration, without a design and integrating the piece of art with the surroundings where they are painted. Pieces of space rubbish, the degradation of the planet, interferences, matter and essence shared with the universe are all themes that the artists have contemplated in their work. Enjoy the experience to see all graffiti together, it will be fantastic! And, don’t forget that a day out in Torreblanca has to include a short visit to the beach of Torrenostra and to the Parque Natural del Prat, two big attractions in this municipality of Castellón. Take a look out from the viewpoints from where you can watch the waters of this small albufera of swamps and marshes.

The Tapa Is the Queen of Puçol From 1 to 10 September, Puçol celebrates the 7th edition of the Route of theTapa. Who doesn’t enjoy a tapa made of quality ingredients? This small and delicious bite will make you smile. How appetizing! The Route of la Tapa in Puçol has been celebrated for seven years now with the good work of the Agrupación de Peñas of Puçol and as an essential part of the festivities of the municipality for 2,20 euro you will receive a drink and a tapa in exchange. They even offer a version for children. Families from around the world, you are welcome with your kids. The tapas take part in a contest, so you can imagine the creativity that the 40 local participants put to work. This year, they will honour the 'pilota dolça', a cake which used to be baked during the festivities, and there will be three awards for the tapas that get the most votes from the public and, simultaneously, some prizes donated by the sponsors of the route will be raffled. We are in Puçol (Valencia), between the sea and the mountains. The municipality opens to a mountainous zone in the West: the Paraje Natural de la Costera, a forest zone of big beauty, representative of the Mediterranean ecology. In the centre, on the plateau, surrounded of orange trees you find the urban area: squares, parks, gardens and neighbours who welcome the occasional traveller and the one who decides to stay. To the east you find l'Estany, way out to the sea of the marsh dels Muslims, a protected swamp which is a nesting area for different species of birds. And the new beach, with white sand, protected by breakwaters and with a modern maritime walk. Puçol calls the attention by the harmony of the streets and by the balance between the Mediterranean colour of his beach, the hospitality of the people from the orchard and the quietness of the mountain.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

Did you really think that the transfer of the Great British Bake Off to Channel Four wouldn’t work? Of course we all had our justifiable fears last year, after the shock move of a TV show that had almost established National Treasure status on the Beeb. Add to that the loss of Mel & Sue and Mary Berry, who decided not to continue with the GBBO. Producers Love Productions wanted much more dosh for the show and flogged it to Four amidst a national outcry over the move and predictions that the GBBO would bomb at its new home. The excellent news based on Tuesday’s opener is that Bake Off is still very much Bake Off. Prue Leith is a fine poshlyspoken replacement for Mary Berry, whilst Paul Hollywood is still Paul Hollywood. A lot of flack was hurled at the Mel & Sue replacements, Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding, without anybody actually seeing them in action. I had little doubt especially since Toksvig effortlessly replaced Stephen Fry on QI last year,

No Doubts About It

and Fielding has gone more mainstream in his comedy, including a number of QI panel appearances. Both delivered the goods and will get even better as the series moves along. Crucially the GBBO is about the tasks and the contestants, and all is well on that particular front. Nothing appears to have been lost about the GBBO in the channel switch, except for the millions of viewers that don’t seem to know how to find Channel Four! That’s

the financial gamble that the network took, and they will never touch the BBC viewing figures (Six million on Tuesday….massive by Channel Four standards, but half of the Beeb) but that aside my fears and that of the nation over a year ago over the GBBO proved to be unfounded. It’s nice to be wrong! I’ve loved the first two episodes of Robert Galbraith’s (sorry…J.K. Rowling’s) private detective creation Strike (BBC 1), and

the likeable portrayal by Tom Burke of the splendidly named Cormoran Strke in the first adaptation, The Cuckoo’s Calling. Inevitably there were some shades of Eddie Shoestring, but Strike is far more interesting and at times funny, with a personal backstory that we are being dripfed. His assistant Robin Ellacott played by Holliday Grainger is a wonderful foil in a tale of the mysterious death of a model. Throw in a couple of cameos from Martin Shaw

as an upperclass sleazebag and a rare outing for Sian Philips, and this has all the makings of a big hit that we will be able to enjoy over the next few years. You can’t keep Dame Diana Rigg down. Just a few weeks ago she was bumped off in Game of Thrones, and now she’s back as a plain-speaking duchess in the return of ITV’s Victoria for a second series. Rigg has almost the Dame Maggie Smith effect

from Downton Abbey, where you might not see a great deal of her, but you love some of the witty and acidic lines she’s given. The stars Jemma Coleman (Victoria) and Tom Hughes (Albert) ooze on-screen chemistry, which is hardly surprising as the show made them an offscreen couple last year. I’m certain you could see steam rising in one bedroom scene, with both looking even more confidant than during the first series. A splendid 90 minute special finished off the best ever run of Game of Thrones this week, and had me sitting on the edge of my seat ahead of a big showdown next year, as witnessed in the final scene. There were some great meetings and verbal clashes that we have been waiting for years to see, plus a baddie getting his deserved comeuppance, not to mention a major revelation involving Jon Snow. I’ll be fascinated to see next year who the winners and losers will be in the final season of a drama that has been a genuine television event.

The teams must keep a beady eye on the button which turns from green to red when it’s time to play. They miss it at their peril as it’s a race against the clock to hit the button and start the game. The Button delivers the task they must complete in the quickest time, interacts with them, and also reveals their rival teams on screen and the results.

Kate Phillips, Controller of BBC Entertainment says: “This new show absolutely pushes all the right buttons for us. It’s a funny, frantic, competitive romp and a great snapshot of family life across the UK.” Jon Thoday, Executive Producer from Avalon says: “I am excited to be working with the BBC and the team behind Taskmaster on this exciting new project” The Button is from the makers of Taskmaster, Andy Devonshire and Alex Horne, whilst the other executive producers are Richard Allen Turner and Jon Thoday for Avalon. The series is commissioned by Charlotte Moore, Director of Television, and Kate Phillips, Controller of Entertainment. The commissioning editor is Jo Wallace.

Guy Martin's Pit Stop Commissioned by Channel 4

Guy is set to take on the most coveted job in automotive engineering - being given unprecedented access and working as part of an elite Formula 1 pit crew. As usual he’ll be going in at the deep end - at the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa, over the August bank holiday with Williams Martini Racing. Ahead of this, Guy will join one of the world's leading Formula 1 teams, Williams Martini Racing, at the team’s UK factory, where the chief mechanic will run him through the major tasks he’ll be expected to perform during the race weekend. The driver’s race is in the mechanics’ hands, so practice is essential. If Guy doesn’t make the grade he’ll be pulled off the project immediately. During the race weekend Guy will be tasked with set-

ting up the pit garage, assisting with building the multi-million dollar car, and will participate in two 90 minute practice sessions on Friday, a further hour practice session on Saturday, the three stage qualification process and the race itself. The pit crew look after both of Williams’ drivers – Brazilian veteran Felipe Massa and Canadian newcomer Lance Stroll – and every pitstop is crucial - he is going to be working with the fastest team in the business. After the race, as the drivers head for the nearest airport, a whole new day of work begins for the mechanics. It takes at least 10 hours to strip the cars, take down the pit box, and pack everything away ready to be transported to the next race. Guy will, of course, stay to the end.

BAC WELCOMES FIRST LADY MONO OWNER “We’re incredibly pleased to welcome Rasha as our first female Mono owner. She’s a woman whose knowledge is endless when it comes to both business and supercars, and we welcomed her to the Mono family with open arms.“

Briggs Automotive Company (BAC) is celebrating welcoming the first lady owner to the Mono family, as BEASTS President Rasha Jarmakani becomes the latest driving enthusiast to take keys to the world’s only road-legal, single-seater supercar. Rasha is the mastermind behind the Beirut Events and Street Shows extravaganza in Lebanon, where the community gathers to celebrate culture, food, music and cars. As well as being a hugely successful professional, Rasha is a true petrolhead and has an extensive collection of supercars and motorbikes to enjoy during her time away from business. She’s been a big fan of the one-of-a-kind Mono for several years now, with its singularity of purpose and ability to deliver the ultimate driving experience putting it right at the top of her wish list. She said: “I am so happy to be the first female owner of the Mono – a car I’ve loved for too long now! Getting the keys and getting behind the wheel is a total joy and I can’t wait to show off its brilliance everywhere I go. I’m also very much looking forward to BAC’s presence at BEASTS and showing the Beirut community exactly why it’s such a phenomenal machine.” BEASTS is a Government-backed operation whereby “worries are replaced by ideas, where chaos is turned into art and where life is a daily celebration of a land’s rich cul-

ture”. The 12-day event aims to reinvent all things Lebanon and bring people together in complete harmony, with creativity and talent on display throughout. And BAC has teamed up with the event organisers to play a big part in the festivities. As one of the automotive jewels of the event, BAC will be bringing Mono Mania to the region by deploying a number of cars and actively meeting with members of the community and potential distributors. BAC will take part in the eagerly awaited Dream Car Shootout, whereby the most desirable cars on the planet will go head-to-head over an hour of racing fun and bring guests closer to the action than ever. BAC Co-Founder and Director of Product Development, Neill Briggs, said: “We’re incredibly pleased to welcome Rasha as our first female Mono owner. She’s a woman whose knowledge is endless when it comes to both business and supercars, and we welcomed her to the Mono family with open arms. It’s also our pleasure to join forces with Rasha and the BEASTS team ahead of such a special event. Our venture into Lebanon represents BAC breaking even more new ground, and we’re very excited to introduce new fans to the brand during our time in the Middle East.”

Lost Cause Reduced

The official period for golf fans and players to let their views be known on the sweeping new proposed Rules of Golf that the USGA and R&A offered in March, closed yesterday with the authorities apparently happy about what they’ve heard. That will include cutting down the time in what often is a fruitless seach for a lost ball (example pictured!). The two governing bodies now begin the business of formally codifying the changes in preparation for implementing them on January 1st 2019. According to USGA communications staff, more than 20,000 people have offered their thoughts, with more than 600,000 watching the online videos. “I think it’s been overwhelmingly positive,” said John Bodenhamer, USGA senior managing director of rules, competitions and equipment standards, of the feedback that’s been obtained so far. “I have not heard anybody say, ‘Oh you guys are out of your mind.’ What we’ve heard is that people really like the changes, but everybody seems to have one or two things that either they need to be clarified, or maybe they disagree with or they think could have been done a different way or ask why it happened.”

Here’s what the the new Rules involve:The current 34 rules would be consolidated into a smaller, easier-to-understand book with 24. As part of this, proposed changes included a reduction on the time you can search for a lost ball from five minutes to three. Also offered is a simplification of how to drop a ball, allowing for golfers to even hover it one inch off the ground before releasing it. Another change does away with players having to remove a flagstick before putting and recommends a time for making a stroke (less than 40 seconds). There’s a new form of stroke play proposed where total number of shots for any hole can be capped (double par, for example). Golfers also would no longer get penalized if they accidentally caused a ball or ball-marker to move on the putting green, or if they want to remove loose impediments in a hazard—to be called a “penalty area.” The motive behind almost all the changes is to make the game friendlier, quicker and easier to understand while still retaining its most basic elements. Bodenhamer said the goal is to have the final draft of the new rules available in spring 2018 (with no specific date yet set) so that educational training be held the remainder of the year for rules officials and players alike.

Watson’s Walker Hopes The 2017 Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team has been announced for the 46th match at the Los Angeles Country Club which takes place over two days starting on Saturday September 9th. The GB &I players will be aiming to defend the trophy after securing a 16½-9½ victory in the 2015 match at Royal Lytham & St Annes; their biggest winning margin since the first contest back in 1922. A 10 player team and two reserves have been named for the 2017 match, with five Englishmen featuring alongside two Scots, two Welshmen and one player from Ireland. The GB&I team includes The Amateur champion Harry Ellis, the Silver Medal Winner at The Open and European Amateur champion Alfie Plant, the Lytham Trophy champion Jack Singh Brar and the winner of the St Andrews Links Trophy Matthew Jordan. Craig Watson (pictured), who will be captaining the GB&I team for the first time in the match, said, “We have been very impressed with the performances of many of the GB&I players so far this season and it has been a difficult decision to select only ten players.” “The Americans will be determined not to lose two matches in a row but we have selected a strong team and I’m sure the players will give it their all to try to retain the trophy.”

Disaster Averted

Maverick Vinales believes he narrowly avoided "a big disaster" when his Spanish compatriot Marc Marquez's Honda engine let go in front of him during the MotoGP British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Sunday. Marquez suffered a severe blow to his title hopes when he retired with smoke pouring from his engine (picture taken from TV footage) at the end of the Hangar Straight while running third behind Valentino Rossi and eventual winner Andrea Dovizioso. Vinales, who was running fourth just behind Marquez at the time, said: “I just saw the explosion in my face. “It was quite scary because I didn’t know if it was oil or water, so I just brake maybe 30 metres earlier than I was braking before. I was happy that the oil or water did not touch the wheels because if it did it was a big disaster.” Vinales said the time he lost due to Marquez’s failure proved costly in his bid for victory, where he came up short by 0.114 seconds to Dovizioso. “I lost a lot compared to

Valentino and Dovizioso in that braking point and they went away a little bit,” he added. “I felt really great on the bike from the first lap, just trying to save tyres until the end. “It was quite hard when Dovi and Marc overtook me because I knew my strongest point was at the end, the last 10 laps – so I pushed at my 100 percent in the last five laps. “We were able to catch back up and try to fight for the victory, and the bike was working well, so I am happy for that.” Dovizioso and Rossi were both made aware that Marquez had retired behind them, and Rossi said it was useful to know the former championship leader had hit trouble. “I saw ‘Marquez out’, it’s important to know during a championship fight like this,” said Rossi. “But nothing changed for me, I wanted to try to win, and I try at the maximum. “It is not one race to go, it is six races to go, so you have to give the maximum anyway.” Dovizioso also received a

signal about Marquez, but he said he was unaware he was fighting Vinales rather than Rossi for the victory at the end. “For me it was very difficult to understand what happened during the race, about all the riders, because the main straight here is very short and it’s very difficult to see the pitboard,” he said. “I saw ‘Marc out’ one lap, but for the last five laps I didn’t know it was four riders [at the front], I thought I was alone with Valentino “When I saw [Marquez was out] it didn’t change my strategy because I felt comfortable. I saw Valentino drop a little bit, I saw him struggling with the rear tyre, so I thought I had to take this opportunity, to fight for it. “At the end Maverick came back and I pushed 100 percent and it was very close, but I was able to manage it.” The next race is in Misano, Italy on September 10th, with Dovizioso (pictured below) leading the standings on 183 points, followed by Marquez on 174, and Vinales with 170 points.

Britain's Chris Froome was in hot form on Sunday when he extended his lead in La Vuelta a Espana after winning the 174 km ninth stage based on the Costa Blanca, which started at La Glea beach on the Orihuela Costa. The stage was formally launched on Sunday lunchtime in the presence of local dignitaries including ex-Torrevieja mayor Eduardo Dolón (pictured centre in a black shirt) of the Alicante Provincial Council, who’s responsibilities

include sport, and Orihuela mayor, Emilio Bascuñana (pictured on the extreme left). Froome (pictured below) leading by 28 seconds at the start of the day, attacked with 500 metres to go and held off Esteban Chaves to win at the finish at Xorret de Catí in Benitachell in 4hrs 7mins 13secs. The Team Sky rider is looking to become the first man to achieve a TourVuelta double in 39 years. Only French greats Jacques Anquetil in 1963 and Bernard Hinault in 1978

have previously won both races in the same year. "I'm really, really happy to get the victory. The team did a brilliant job on that final climb and set such a good tempo. "After a week we couldn't have asked to be in a better position. It's been a fantastic start to the Vuelta. The legs are feeling great. I've been to the Vuelta so many times, trying to target this race, and so far it feels like everything is going really well." La Vuelta finishes in Madrid a week on Sunday.

Torrevieja Foiled Four wickets for Angus McDowell (pictured) were not enough to stop Torrevieja Cricket Club losing by 64 runs to the Alicante Stars last weekend in their latest match in the ECCL Division Two. The Stars were put into bat by Torrevieja and posted a total of 180 on the unpredictable Torry wicket. That represented a significant recovery as the visitors had a dreadful start by losing two wickets with no runs on the board. Another couple of cheap wickets had them struggling at 44 for 4 when Nadeem and Ismael came together, as they put on an impressive fifth wicket partnership of 112, which turned the game

around. Both players departed in close succession, with Ismael out for 59, and Nadeem just short of a half century on 49. McDowell’s fine return of 4 for 30 made him the pick of the Torry bowlers, but they were left frustrated by the hundred-plus stand which shifted all the momentum to Alicante Stars. Kieran Wood opened up with 39, but none of the other Torrevieja batsmen could back him up or match him with runs, which meant that that they were rolled over for 116. Abdul took 3 for 8, and the Torry tail was mopped up by Shania with two wickets in his only over, as Alicante sealed the deal. Torrevieja are again at

home tomorrow (Saturday September 2nd), as they entertain the Pinatar Pirates, with an 11.00 am start at their Sports City ground. Spectators are more than welcome, and there are more details at torrevieja.cricketclubwebsite.com.

ALAVES 0 BARCELONA 2 Lionel Messi missed a penalty and then scored twice as Barcelona overcame a resilient Alaves side to win at the Estadio Mendizorroza on Saturday to maintain their 100 per cent start to the La Liga season. Barcelona's talisman was handed a golden opportunity to break the deadlock just before half-time but saw his spot-kick palmed away by Pacheco after Rodrigo Ely was adjudged to have pulled Gerard Pique to the floor. However, Messi - whose double saw him pass the milestone of 350 La Liga goals - made amends just 10 minutes after the interval by latching onto Jordi Alba's pull-back (55), before adding his second (66) with a well-taken volley after Alexis' mistake. Barca coach Ernesto Valverde praised the defensive mentality of their opponents, saying: "Alaves were so compact that their forwards were closer to our midfielders than defenders. "We've overcome a difficult test. It took a lot to open the scoring. They were stuck within a 15-metre space and it meant that sometimes we were so close that there were as many as 18 players in such a small space." Barcelona return to action after the international break on Saturday September 9th, with a home fixture against Espanyol.

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane felt his side deserved more after they were held to a draw by Valencia at the Bernabeu last Saturday. Marco Asensio prevented Madrid's belated title party from falling flat with a late equaliser. Real were presented with the La Liga trophy before kickoff after claiming their 33rd title away to Malaga on the final day of last season. Asensio's early strike meant the celebratory atmosphere continued until goals from Carlos Soler and Geoffrey Kondogbia threatened to cause an upset. But Asensio's superb free-kick meant some wayward finishing from team-mate Karim Benzema was not fully punished. And Zidane said on Real's official website: "I can't be happy with result, but the performance was excellent. We deserved more but that's the way it goes in football and you can't always win.” With the international break this weekend, Real return to La Liga action at home to Levante on Saturday September 9th.

Firing Blanks

Two goals from veteran striker Nino (pictured top) formed part of a rout not witnessed for ages by the long-suffering Elche fans at their home ground, as the Ilicitanos opened up their home campaign in Segunda Division B in real style last Sunday evening. After the opening nil-nil draw at Sabadell, Elche handed out a thrashing to Badalona as they totally dominated the first hour, and went in three-up at the interval, with goals from Benja, and two quick strikes in the 42nd and 44th minutes from Nino. The home side created a host of chances and Collantes killed off the contest in the 64th minute, though the visitors through Adri Rivas pulled one back shortly afterwards, before Sory Kaba got the fifth for Elche with six minutes remaining. Elche coach Vicente Mir took a philosophical view that “not many games will be like this one during the season”. He added that he was pleased that the side had created plen y of scoring opportunities. The Ilicitanos are back on the road this Sunday lunchtime (noon) with a trip to Deportivo Aragón, who to all intents and purposes are the Real Zaragoza second team.

Shoot-Out Victory

Local Opener The two Vega Baja sides relegated from the Valencian third division last season meet in a repeat of last year’s opening match, as CD Torrevieja entertain CD Almoradi at the Nelson Mandela stadium this Sunday, with a 6.45 pm kick-off. There have been substantial changes in both squads as they have prepared for life in Preferente group four, but another two Torrrevieja players have renewed for another season, namely Jorge Beltrán and Walid (pictured below), along with goalkeeper Buyo from Murcia third division team, Muleño CF. Meanwhile Almoradi have also brought another keeper into their squad in the shape of ex-Torrevieja, Cox, and Callosa player Quique (photo at the bottom with Almoradi president Paco Albaladejo).

CF BADALONA 2 ELCHE 2 (A.E.T.) The Valencia Third Division season opened last weekend, with Orihuela being held to a nil-nil scoreline by Torre Levante(pictured). Orihuela are now away to Paiporta. Crevillente also had a scoreless opener against Villarreal C, and go on the road to CD Roda, whilst Elche Ilicitano are away to Atletico Levante, on the back of a one-nil home to defeat to one of the fancied sides in the division, CD Castellon.

Thader Kick-Off CD Thader start their Preferente Group Four season this Sunday with a lunchtime trip to Villena CF, which will kick-off at 11.30 am. The success of the Rojales-based side in the last campaign, which saw them get into the play-offs, means that they have a stable squad, and are fancied to be there are thereabouts come the spring.

Elche won a penalty shoot-out, three-one, to book a place a next Wednesday’s second round of the Copa del Rey, after needing to come back from two-nil down against Badalona, in what was a very different affair from Sunday’s league thrashing of the Catalunya-based side. The victory meant that the Ilicitanos have earnt what appears to be a comfortable looking home tie against the Basque Tercera Division side La Cultural De Durango. Elche fought back in the tie after Badlona went two-nil up within 37 minutes, with a Lolo Plá penalty (64 minutes), converted after he himself was brought down in the penalty area, and ten minutes later, Sory Kaba, popped up to get his second goal in four days against Badalona. Extra time saw few chances in the first period, whilst Elche looked stronger in the final 15 minutes, and had opportunities to win, especially with a header from Verdú producing an excellent save from Badalona keeper Marqueta. That meant the lottery of the penalties, where Elche’s nerve held to take them into the second round.

The Diario Gol website has claimed that Real Madrid have been offered the chance to sign Borussia Dortmund forward Aubameyang by the striker himself! The player is supposedly determined to quit the Bundesliga side, and was angry at their decision to sell Ousmane Dembele to Barcelona earlier this week. But despite the offer club president Florentino Perez is not interested in signing the Gabon international, with coach Zinedine Zidane feeling he would not be an improvement on Gareth Bale at the focal point of their attack. Additionally, Real Madrid were offered the chance to sign Aubameyang ‘years ago.’ But Perez again discarded the deal, instead opting to place his faith in Morata and Karim Benzema.

Ousmane Dembele was presented as a Barcelona player on Monday after completing the formalities of his move from Borussia Dortmund. The clubs announced agreement had been reached on a 105 million euro deal on Sunday and Dembele completed his medical on Monday afternoon in Barcelona. There was a brief delay, with almost 20 thousand fans waiting around for a couple of extra hours, before the 20-year-old appeared alongside Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu to put pen-to-paper on a five-year contract. "I have always wanted to play for Barca since I was a kid. I watched all their matches.” "I'm really happy to now be part of the best club in the world with the best players in the world.” "I hope to win lots of trophies and titles here. I'm hoping forward to a good year, a successful year and looking forward to playing here in this stadium." The forward's transfer is the second highest of all time, after the world record deal of over 200 million euro that Paris SaintGermain paid Barcelona for Neymar earlier this summer. Dembele joined Borussia Dortmund from French side Rennes last summer and went on to score 10 goals in 50 appearances in his debut season at the Westfalenstadion. Dembeke is the fourth player to arrive at Barcelona so far this summer, following Nélson Semedo, Paulinho and Gerard Deulofeu. He joined for 105 million euro plus a further 40% to be paid according to a series of targets – half of them collective, the other half individual – taking the total transfer fee to a potential 145 million euro. He has signed until 2022, with a 400 million euro buyout clause. Club President Bartomeu had hoped that Dembele’s arrival would reduce the pressure as he faces a vote of no confidence brought by the former presidential candidate Agustí Benedito. That comes amid fierce criticism of his management of the club and in the wake of Neymar leaving for Paris Saint-Germain, who triggered his 222 million euro buyout clause.

Offer Rejected

Juventus yesterday reportedly rebuffed a 160 million euro offer from Barcelona for Paulo Dybala, ahead of the transferdeadline. Italian sources reported the 160 million bid was made up of 115 million euros plus a further 45 million euro in add-ons. He racked up 19 goals and nine assists last season, but there was no further news on a better Barcelona bid as The Courier went to press.

Former Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso believes the Spanish and European champions are capable of winning six titles in 2017-18. After claiming La Liga and Champions League silverware last season, Madrid have wasted little time in this current campaign, winning the UEFA Super Cup and Supercopa de Espana. Zinedine Zidane's Madrid are favourites to defend their La Liga and Champions League crowns as well, while the Club World Cup and Copa del Rey are also up for grabs. "It is complicated but not impossible. It can be done," Alonso said of winning six trophies. "Madrid are leading the way for the rest of the world. If we look at how they have played in the last four years and how the team looks, they are certainly the reference points in every way, both in Europe and throughout the world," he continued. "You never know how far you can go but things appear to be very good. Zinedine Zidane has earned his place on great merit with how he has been able to manage everything. He won LaLiga which the club hadn't did recently and deserved to do it. Their trajectory is very good." Alonso added: "They have won three out of four [Champions League titles] ... which isn't bad. The whole Madridismo community is very excited and the feeling is that they can achieve even more. "The others will try to close the gap but Real Madrid are at a higher level than the rest at the moment and with young people, they won't stop getting better."

Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho remains Barcelona's number one target but the La Liga club are also weighing up a move for Monaco's Thomas Lemar. The Spanish transfer deadline comes at the end of today, a day later than the English transfer window closure. Barca have had three bids for 25-year-old Coutinho turned down, the latest in the region of 120 million euro. Barcelona had their potent forward partnership of Neymar, Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi broken up earlier this month when Paris St-Germain lured Neymar away after paying the 222-million-euro release clause. Barcelona technical director Robert Fernandez said last weekend: "I won't go into names but I admit that the club is working on the possibility of signing new players."

ALL ON KYLE

22-year-old Kyle Edmund will fly the flag as the last British player left at the US Open at Flushing Meadow, as he plays the unseeded teenage Canadian Denis Shapovalov, who had a shock win on Wednesday over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Edmund is the last Briton standing after six were initially entered in the main draw. "It's a shame really that a few of us have lost early, and obviously Andy [Murray] was injured," he said.

Liverpool have completed the £35m signing of England midfielder Alex OxladeChamberlain from Arsenal on yesterday’s transfer deadline day. The 24-year-old, who rejected a move to Chelsea on Tuesday after a fee had been agreed, joins on a five-year contract worth £120,000 a week. Oxlade-Chamberlain, who was in the last year of his Arsenal contract, rejected a new deal worth up to £180,000 a week to stay at the Emirates.

WORLD CUP CLASHES England begin life without Wayne Rooney for the first time in over 14 and a half years this evening as their World Cup 2018 qualification picks up with a trip to Malta(8.45 pm kickoff, live on ITV). The new Premier League season takes an abrupt break just three weeks in as, just a day after the transfer window ends, as the team under manager Gareth Southgate (pictured with Raheem Sterling) travel to the already-eliminated minnow for what should be a feast of goals. Victory tonight followed by another over second-placed Slovakia at Wembley would put the Three Lions in a commanding position at the top of Group F. In the same group, Scotland go to Lithuania tonight in a match that Gordon Strachan’s side have to win in the

knowledge that they have Malta coming to Hampden Park on Monday. Wales are looking to close the four-point gap on Group D front-runners Serbia and the Republic of Ireland, as they play Austria in Cardiff tomorrow(Saturday), and then go to Moldova on Tuesday night. Northern Ireland face San Marino away tonight before the home qualifier against the Czech Republic on Monday. Michael O'Neill's side are second in Group C and on course for a play-off spot. With four rounds of fixtures left, world champions Germany lead the table on a maximum 18 points with Northern Ireland five points off the place and the Czechs a further four points adrift in third spot.

FERRARI’S HOME BOOST Sebastian Vettel has been on the podium at Ferrari's home Italian Grand Prix at Monza for the past two years but anything less than a win on Sunday could cost the German the lead in the Formula One championship. The Ferrari driver is only seven points clear of Lewis Hamilton, the difference between first and second place, with his Mercedes rival fresh from last weekend's pole-toflag success in Belgium and 5-4 up on race wins. Hamilton won at Monza in 2014 and 2015 and was runnerup last year to now-retired team-mate and eventual champion Nico Rosberg.

The Briton has also been on pole at the 'Pista Magica' for the past three years. But Ferrari has closed the gap and Vettel can count on a wave of local support at the historic Milanese track where he took his first grand prix victory with Toro Rosso in 2008. "I think Monza is never a critical race for Ferrari. I think it’s the nicest race," the four-times world champion told reporters ahead of a weekend that will also see his team celebrates its 70th anniversary. "We have a lot of support so I’m really looking forward to it already."
