Christmas Across EuropE

Christmastime is celebrated in some form in countries across the globe, with most families having their own twist on how they spend their festive season, from when they open their presents, to what they have to eat. Here is a brief run down of some of the customs which are observed in different parts of Europe. The Magi are particularly sacred in Spain, and in light of the long distance which they travelled to honour the baby Jesus with Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh, are considered as the “gift bearers”. Therefore, in the majority of traditional Spanish households children receive their presents on the feast of the Epiphany, which falls on January 6. However, Christmas in its entirety remains a deeply religious holiday in Spain, whose celebrations start as early as December 8 with the feast of the Immaculate Conception. It is, as in many other countries, considered a time for families, and so children lie at the centre of any plans that are made, which generally involve plenty of food, drink, song, dance, and eventually the exchanging of gifts. The Nativity, or Belen, is a very important element in the Spanish Christmas, and replicated in the plazas of many towns and cities throughout the country from the eve of the Immaculate Conception through to Kings Day, ‘El Dia de los Reyes’, with some of the most elaborate ones locally being found in Orihuela, Torrevieja and Guardamar. Schools will usually organize a visit to the Nativity, and many children also go in the evening with their families, where they meet with friends to sing carols and share popcorn and roasted chestnuts. Groups of children will also go Carol Singing, called “Aguinaldo”,

As in Spain, the Nativity scene plays a large part in Christmastime in France, with a crib containing clay figures often used to decorate the house. Aside from the traditional figures form the Christmas story, the Nativity will often include important characters from the town, such as a Butcher, a Baker, a Policeman and a Priest. Yule logs made from cherry wood and splashed with red wine are often carried into the house on Christmas Eve. These are then burned to cast a warm glow and make the house smell nice, and are often left smouldering all night, alongside of a selection of food and drinks as an offering to Mary and Joseph. In French, the words for Merry Christmas are “Joyeux Noël” and Santa Claus is “Père Noël”. The main Christmas supper or “Réveillon” is enjoyed very late on Christmas Eve, once people have returned from midnight mass. A variety of foods might be eaten, including roast

in their neighbourhoods, particularly in smaller rural towns and villages, in exchange for sweets or a few coins which they might pool to purchase treats later. These are all exciting events for the youngsters, as a significant sign that Christmas is just around the corner. On 5th January, the eve of Epiphany, families gather in town squares all over the Hispanic world, to celebrate the coming of the Kings, with elaborate firework displays and processions. Hundreds of brightly coloured helium balloons are sold, to which children are encouraged to tie their letters to the Kings. These are then released into the sky and sent on their way to the approaching Magi. The children then retire to bed, but not before lining their shoes with straw and placing them in a visible spot in the house or on their balcony, which Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar will fill with gifts during the night (provided that they have been good throughout the year of course!) The celebrations conclude on El Dia de los Reyes, with yet more feasting, which usually involves a lavish feast; and ‘Rosca’ for dessert, a round cake which always has a small prize baked inside, and is said to bring luck to the person who finds it in their slice. In effect, kids in Spain enjoy two major celebrations during the Christmas period, which luckily for them, and in accordance with Spanish tradition, just goes on and on!

Dessert often consists of a chocolate sponge log called a “bûche de Noël.” In certain parts of France, it is traditional for a spread of thirteen different desserts to be eaten, which might include all kinds of nuts, fruits and pastries. As in Spain, Epiphany or “Fête des Rois” is widely celebrated in France, on 6 January. As part of their celebrations, families often enjoy an almond flavoured cake called a “Galette des Rois”, which is decorated with a golden paper crown, whilst a toy one is also baked inside.

In Italy, the crib is once again an important symbol of Christmas time and was made popular by St Francis of Assisi in 1223. The city of Naples is known throughout the world for its crib making traditions, with the first crib sighting being recorded within the city in 1025. Naples is also home to the biggest crib in the world, which has over 600 objects in it, including the traditional Nativity figurines, and models of houses, waterfalls, food, animals, famous people and politicians. In Italian homes, the crib is traditionally mounted on December 8, although baby Jesus is not placed inside until Christmas Eve.

During the days leading up to Christmas, children dress up in shepherd’s clothing, and go out singing songs and playing music on oldfashioned shepherd’s pipes. On Christmas Eve, families get together for their main meal after midnight mass. The meal often includes a traditional fruity sponge cake called “Panettone”. The family then welcome in Christmas Day together and wish each other “Buon Natale”. “Babbo Natale” (Santa Claus) visits once the children have gone to bed, although the bulk of their presents are exchanged during Epiphany. During the night of January 5, children believe that an old lady called “Befana” visits their homes to lay gifts for them- a similar tale to that of “Babouska” in Russia.

Advent plays a large part of the traditional German Christmas, and people often buy several different calendars to decorate their homes. These are available in a plethora of designs, and might include a wreath with 24 boxes hanging from it, each containing a small gift; or an “Advent Kranz”, which comprises a ring of fir branches bearing four candles. One candle is lit at the beginning of each week of advent. Germany is famous for its Christmas markets, where all manner of homemade food, drink, decorations, arts and crafts can be purchased, and are usually given as gifts. In some parts of Germany, children write to the “Christkind” or “Christ Child”, giving them a list of presents which they are hoping to receive, as children in the UK do to Santa. The envelope is usually decorated with sugar to make it sparkle, and the letter is left on a window sill for

the Christkind to collect around the beginning of advent. Der Weihnachtsmann brings the bulk of the presents on Christmas Eve, although some smaller gifts such as sweets and chocolate are also exchanged on December 6, which marks “der Nikolaus” or St. Nicholas' Day. Nikolaus is said to visit during the night, when he places the gifts inside the children’s shoes. Christmas Trees are a prominent feature within the home, dating back to the middle ages. The tree was traditionally brought into the house on Christmas Eve, and the parents would decorate it in secret. Later the family would gather around it to read bible stories and sing Christmas songs such as O Tannenbaum, Ihr Kinderlein Kommet and Stille Nacht or Slient Night. It is at this time when they also exchange gifts. In German, the words for Merry Christmas are “Frohe Weihnacht.” Christmas dinner usually consists of a feast of Carp or Goose, with popular fruited yeast bread, stollen to follow.

One of the biggest celebrations of the festive season in Sweden is St. Lucia's Day, which falls on December 13. She was said to be a young Christian girl who became a martyr when she was killed for her beliefs in 304AD. Legend has it that St Lucia would secretly bring food to the persecuted Christians of Rome, who lived in hiding, and she would wear candles on her head, leaving both hands free so that she could carry more food. A popular food eaten for breakfast during the celebration is “Lussekatts”, small currant buns flavoured with saffron. St Lucia's Day is also celebrated in Denmark, Norway, Finland, Bosnia, and Croatia. Christmas Eve is also an important event in Sweden, when presents are exchanged and the feasting takes place! And it certainly is a feast! The meal often com-

prises of a lavish buffet or “julbord” which is eaten in courses. The first course usually includes cold fish such as herring or smoked salmon, and is served with bread and butter. This is followed by a platter of cold meats including roast turkey, beef and ham. These are accompanied by a variety of cheeses, liver pate, salads, pickles and different types of bread and butter. Next is the main course! This often includes meatballs, sausages, “koldomar” (meat stuffed cabbage rolls), jellied pigs' feet, “lutfisk” (a dried cod served with a thick white sauce) and roasted pork ribs. Traditional accompaniments include red cabbage and “Janssons Frestelse” which is a dish of potatoes layered with cream, onion and anchovies that is baked until golden brown. Astonishingly after all of that, the diners usually still have room for dessert, which might include rice pudding flavoured with raspberry jam or cinnamon or a selection of sweet pastries and biscuits. The meal is washed down with plenty of sweet mulled wine, and can take many hours to complete- hardly surprising!

Different Business Formats in Spain Self-Employed The simplest form to do business in Spain is to work as self employed (Autónomo). The paper work involved with starting as self-employed and the ongoing declarations are simpler compared to a company, but there are a number of disadvantages. First of all, if you are self-employed you will be personally liable for all the services provided and your personal belongings can be reached by your creditors. Furthermore, there are a number of fiscal disadvantages if you have high earnings. Limited Company The limited company (SL or Sociedad Limitada) is the most common form to start a business in Spain. To start a limited company you will only need 3,005 Eur as initial backing capital and the company can be formed with one or more owners on a percentage / shares basis. A limited company can be recommended for all small and medium sized businesses. The liability of the owners is limited to the initial capital of the company and this form also requires a more simple form of accounting compared to a corporation (see below). Corporation The corporation (Sociedad Anónima or S.A.) is normally used when big companies want to settle in Spain or for bigger projects. The initial capital needed to form an S.A. is 60,000Eur. The liability of the owners is limited to the initial capital but there are number of requirements an S.A. has to follow. Each corporation must have a Board of Directors ("Consejo de Administración"), and must hold a Shareholders' General Meeting ("Junta General de Accionistas") and furthermore there are some strict accounting requirements. The S.A. has some tax advantages for high earnings and if you want to sell shares publicly this is the best option available. Partnerships / Co-ownership The main characteristics of the partnership (Comunidad de Bienes or

C.B) are the personal and unlimited liability of each partner, and the fact that a partnership may not be offered to third parties without the agreement of all partners.

Spanish Branch of your existing Company Setting up a branch is an option for foreign companies who want representation in Spain. A branch is an organisation depending on its head office situated abroad and is not a legal entity of its own. To set up a branch is normally faster than setting up a new company but it still has to be done through a public deed and entered in the Commercial Register. There are some requirements to a branch like having a permanent address and a fiscal representative in Spain. As to the yearly accounting and obligations they are very similar to those for a limited company. Here is a detailed guide about how to set up a limited company (Sociedad Limitada) in Spain. To set up an S.L. you have to follow the steps below. Remember to always bring all your papers and your identification (+ at least 5 copies) to all the meetings you have with different Spanish institutions: 1. Apply for company name. (Certificación Negativa del Nombre or CNN). Seek professional advice with regards to opening licences. 2. Deposit 3005€ initial capital in the company name, into a bank account opened in the company's name and obtain certificate. 3. Apply for temporary CIF number (fiscal identification number). 4. Prepare statutes and activity declaration to sign along with company formation title deeds at the notary office. Company formation tax (1% of initial capital) is now due. 5. Register the company formation escritura at the Registro Mercantil (similar to Companies House.) 6. Declare start of business and sign up with the Social Security. Depending on the type of business, different forms and/or different inscriptions are necessary. Obtain definitive CIF number. 7. The company can start to operate as soon as you have received all the necessary licences. Whilst Christmas is traditionally a time for celebration, it can also bring a selection of less pleasant side effects, many of which are self-inflicted, others are inadvertently (or otherwise) imposed by our nearest and dearest. So take a look at the Jungle Drums Christmas survival guide on how to tackle your yuletide health issues.

1. Hangovers With Christmas parties and other festive celebrations coming out of your ears, you will often find yourself drinking more alcohol than normal, and unfortunately, more than you can handle! Obviously the best way to avoid a hangover is don’t drink, but if the thought of this puts a dampener on your plans then its best to try some damage limitation strategies instead. The most effective way to defuse your hangover is to drink lots of water, before, during and after the event. This will not only rehydrate the body but also help to flush the alcohol through the system. Eating lots of protein rich foods, such as meat, cheese and pulses, or starchy foods such as potatoes and bread, as they take a long time to digest and will serve to soak up the demon drink. Eating a full English breakfast on the morning after has been widely saluted as a hangover saviour, as have cheese and beans on toast, Burger King takeaways, and the classic hair of the dog. And if all avenues have been exhausted, its time to reach for the Nurofen and disappear back under the duvet!

Normally the pain will ease if you limit your food intake for a few days and let the digestive system get over the shock. However, if the pain is severe, persistent or combined with a high temperature, then it is best to seek medical advice.

4. Chest Pain This goes hand-in-hand with the stomach troubles, and is a classic symptom of over- eating. However, it can also be the warning sign of a heart attack, which is not uncommon with the additional stresses brought about around Christmastime. If it feels like someone is applying intense pressure to your chest and other symptoms such as breathing difficulties, nausea, sweating or pain that spreads to your arms, are also being felt then, do not hesitate in calling for assistance. It is probably nothing, but better to be safe and make it to 2013 than dismiss the signals.

5. Food Poisoning The hectic social calendar and increased pressures of entertaining guests can result in us being less vigilant over food hygiene practises. Whether you are preparing Christmas Dinner, a festive finger buffet or warming up the leftovers the following day, ensure that everything is cooked through properly, particularly meat and poultry, and that food which is reheated is piping hot. All foods should be properly stored also, so be sure to leave plenty of room in the fridge if entertaining guests! If you do get a bout of Spanish tummy, remember to drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration, and eat foods that are easy to digest but will keep your strength up, such as soup, rice and bread.

6. Cold and Flu Naturally we are always more prone to colds and flu during the winter months, and with more time being spent socialising, we are even more likely to catch them or pass them on at Christmas. So to avoid being laid up in bed during the festivities, make sure you brush up on your cough and cold etiquette. Use disposable tissues as opposed to hankies, which can be thrown away after one single use to avoid spreading germs, and wash hands frequently if coughing and sneezing. If you are unfortunate enough to catch a cold, make sure you wrap up warm, get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluids to avoid dehydration. Symptoms such as high temperature can also be relived by taking paracetamol or ibuprofen.

7. Sad Memories As a time when families traditionally come together to celebrate, Christmas’ gone by can hold a lot of memories, some good, some not so good and the whole thing can leave us feeling quite emotional. Thoughts of loved ones are more prominent at Christmastime, whether it is a painful relationship breakup or death in the family that is playing on our minds. This can be particularly difficult if the loss happened recently and this is the first Christmas spent apart. But now is the time to remember what Christmas is all about, and look to family and friends for support and companionship. Do whatever you can to

keep your mind off things and if you do start to feel the Christmas blues coming on, make sure you give them a call and make arrangements to meet up- you know they will be more than happy to see you.

8. Depression People are generally more prone to feeling fed up during this time of year, due to the shorter daylight hours and change in the weather. There are also the added stresses relating to Christmas, not only feelings of loneliness and the loss of loved ones, but also anxiety relating to financial constraints. We are all aware that Christmas can be an expensive time, especially for families with children living at home, who are looking forward to receiving presents and doing lots of fun things during the holidays. Try not to get too worked up about it, as if you don’t have the cash to spare you have no option but to enjoy the festivities on a budget. Purchase a variety of smaller, inexpensive gifts for the children to open, as opposed to a large expensive one- as long as they have something with their name on it under the tree on Christmas morning they will be happy. Finally, remember that it is only one day and you deserve to enjoy it as well!

9. Boredom In spite of Christmas being the most exciting time of year for kids, it can be difficult to keep them, and you, entertained, especially when Christmas day is over and you are experiencing the lull before the New Year. Having so much spare time on your hands can feel even more alien if you have spent the last month running yourself ragged preparing for the festive season. Just bear in mind that you only have a short break before its back to business as usual, and we nearly all have a list of things that we have been meaning to get round to for months but never found the time, such as having a good clear out or visiting friends that we haven’t seen for a while. So now is the perfect time to get on it- it might not be the most appealing task in the world, but it will stop the boredom from setting in. Plus, with the weather in Spain generally being pleasant over the festive period you can find plenty of inexpensive ways to entertain the kids, such as visits to the beach, park, even a long walk will help to beat the blues and get them out from under your feet!

Heidi’s Highs and Lows of 2012

With Europe still struggling to survive the crisis, the past twelve months have proven difficult for many. However, it has not all been doom and gloom, when you consider the Royal celebrations and outstanding sporting successes that kept us glued to our TV screens through the summer. Here is a selection of some of the most important events of 2012.

The Olympic Games

Laughing in the face of the crisis, this autumn saw the grand opening of what is now the largest Shopping and Leisure Centre in the Alicante Province. Spanning an area of 161 000 square meters and with a Gross Leasable Area (GLA) of 80 000 sq. metres, the centre benefit from an investment in excess of 200 million euros, and has created more than 1 800 direct jobs for people living throughout the area. La Zenia Boulevard has become home to a plethora or national and international retail chains, including hypermarket Alcampo, Media Markt, Leroy Merlin, Decathlon, Norauto, Conforama, Primark, Inditex incorporating Zara and its other brands, H&M, Guess, Geox, Swarovski, Punt Roma, Druni, Marvimundo and Baby Center; as well as famous eateries Subway, Foster’s Hollywood and Burger King a Casino and ten-pin bowling alley. Construction of the mall has also encouraged major improvements made to local roads, making access really simple, and with 5 000 free parking places you will never have to hunt for spaces. So whilst shopping may not be everybody’s cup of tea, the inauguration of this awesome Mall has to be one of the highs of 2012 for the local area.

Diamond Jubilee 2012 marked the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, and 60 years since her accession to the throne. She became Queen on 6 February 1952, following the death of her father, King George VI, and reigns over 16 sovereign states, 12 of which were British colonies or Dominions at the start of her reign. Incidentally, Queen Victoria is the only other monarch in the histories of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and a few other members of the Commonwealth to have celebrated a Diamond Jubilee, in 1897. This makes the Queen pretty special in my book, and I hope that she reigns over us for many years to come.

European Football Championship Spain 4 : 0 Italy – Need I say more? “Euro 2012”, was the 14th European Championship for national football teams organised by UEFA. The tournament was hosted for the first time by Poland and Ukraine, kicking off on June 8 through to the dramatic final on July 1. “La Furia Roja” not only knocked their Italian opponents into touch, but made history by becoming the European champions for the second year running. Needless to say, some serious celebrating was done throughout the country on that night, which will not only go down as one of the highlights of the year, but a significant mark in Spain’s footballing history.

The 2012 Summer Olympics, or “London 2012”, took the UK by storm, and whether a sports fan or not, it was almost impossible not to get drawn into the euphoria surrounding the event. The event continued from July 27 to August 12 and more than 10 000 athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees flocked to London to take part. The entire event received international acclaim, and with a global investment of £8.921bn and construction of the 200-hectare (490 acre) Olympic Park, it’s hardly surprising! Even the elaborate opening ceremony, which was directed by Danny Boyle, received global acclaim. London 2012 also made Olympic history, when Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Brunei entered female athletes, and women's boxing was included for the first time.

Rugby Triumph at Twickenham England 38-21 New Zealand England’s Rugby squad celebrated one of their most amazing victories to date, when they destroyed world champions, the New Zealand All Blacks. The Kiwis had remained undefeated for 20 matches until December 1, when they met their match at Twickenham. England dominated the match from the outset, with all of the players proving their form. The result gave England their first win over the All Blacks in nine years and only their seventh in history. A fairly satisfying end to the year for the lads we think!

Kate and Wills: Expecting We learned at the beginning of this month, that the Duke and Dutchess of Cambridge are expecting their first baby. Unfortunately, the lovely wife of the future monarch had a difficult start to her pregnancy and had to be admitted to King Edward VII hospital for hyperemesis gravidarum, or severe morning sickness. However, this did not prevent Kate and William fans across the world sending their excited best wishes to the happy couple. The royal baby will become the third in line to the throne after his Grandfather, Prince Charles and Dad, Prince William. Families of both parents are reported to be delighted by the news and all in agreement that they will make wonderful parents.

Lows Economic Crisis

Hillsborough Investigation

The flailing economy, rising unemployment levels and social exclusion have concerned many families throughout Europe, with Spain in particular suffering the brunt of the side affects. Although certain industries have seen slight improvements, such as an increase in tourism, progress has been slow with many small businesses being forced to close, and even some major national firms going into liquidation. One of the most shocking closures came in January, when it was announced that Spanair had collapsed without warning, leaving some 23 000 passengers stranded or scrambling to reschedule flights. The latest statistics released from Eurostat, show that the number of people within the European Union (EU), who are at risk of poverty or social exclusion is still on the rise as we go into 2013.

The notorious Hillsborough disaster took place in 1989, when football fans were crushed during the FA Cup semi-final match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest football clubs. The tragedy struck at the Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield, where the stampede of people resulted in the deaths of 96 fans and injuries to 766 others. The incident was recorded as the worst stadium-related disaster in British history and one of the world's worst football disasters. The enquiry behind how the stadium became so overcrowded continued for years after, with reports pointing the finger at a lack of Police control in 1990, although evidence was inconclusive. The “Hillsborough Independent Panel” finally provided some degree of release to the families of those killed on September 2012, when it was ruled that no Liverpool fans were responsible for the deaths, and that attempts had been made by the authorities to conceal what had happened, including the alteration of 164 statements relating to the disaster by the police. The Panel concluded that up to 41 of the 96 fatalities might have been saved had they received prompt medical treatment.

Costa Concordia Disaster struck on January 13, when Cruise Liner, “Costa Concordia” partially sank after hitting a reef off the Italian coast and running aground at Isola del Giglio, in Tuscany. The incident was the worst of its kind recorded this year, resulting in the evacuation of the 4 252 people onboard. Thirty people are known to have lost their lives during the crash, whilst two remain missing and presumed dead. A further 64 passengers were injured, and two passengers and a crew member rescued from the wreckage several days after the crash. According to investigations into the cause of the crash, Captain Francesco Schettino had deviated from the ship's computerized route to show off the spectacle of a cruise liner to people close to the shore line. His pretentious plan back-fired drastically.

Earthquakes in Italy Two major earthquakes hit northern Italy in May, causing 26 deaths and immeasurable damage. The first quake hit the Emilia-Romagna region, the city of Bologna, and measured 6.1 on the Richter scale. Three aftershocks followed the main quake, with the death toll measured at seven people. Nine days later, a second earthquake struck the same region, at a magnitude of 5.8. This resulted in another twenty deaths, and the destruction of many buildings throughout the area, whilst some 5000 people were left homeless.

Whitney Houston Death Much-loved vocalist, actress, producer, and model, Whitney Houston, was reported dead on February 11. Whitney was one of the world's best-selling music artists; recording album, single, and video sales of over 170 million worldwide. During her career she released six studio albums, one celebration album and three movie soundtracks, all of which have diamond, multi-platinum, platinum or gold certification. The star met a tragic end, at the age of 49, when she was discovered drowned, face down in a tub of "extremely hot water" about 12 inches deep. LA Coroners ruled that Whitney’s death was an accidental drowning, citing the "effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use" as contributing factors.

British Soldiers Her Majesty’s Armed Forces do a wonderful job at protecting us and securing our freedom throughout the year, and as we near Christmastime it is only right that we should spare a thought to those stationed overseas, as well as the families who are waiting desperately for their return. It is all too easy to take it for granted, as it is their job. But the truth remains that things would be very different if it were not for members of the Armed Forces putting their lives on the line everyday. The number of attacks by Afghan government soldiers and police officers on Nato soldiers rose to 36 incidents during this year, when 51 Soldiers were killed. This is compared with the 35 deaths of Nato Soldiers that were reported in 2011.

Hurricane Sandy The frightful storm struck during late October, devastating parts of the Caribbean, as well as towns throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern United States, with a slight impact in Southeastern and Midwestern states and Eastern Canada. “Sandy” registered as a “Category 2” storm at its strongest point, and was measured as the largest Atlantic hurricane on record, with winds spanning across 1 800 km (1 100 miles). 253 people are known to have lost their lives in the path of the storm. The extent of damage caused is still being evaluated, although figures estimate that losses due to destruction and temporary closure of businesses could be as much as $65.6 billion (€50 bn), which would rate it as the second most costly Atlantic hurricane in history.

Savile Sex Scandal Investigations into the late BBC personality, Sir Jimmy Savile, were publicised in September and October, following allegations by various women who claim to have been sexually abused by him during childhood or adolescence. Savile's career was centred on children and young people, including visiting schools and hospital wards. We saw his face as a presenter of Top of the Pops for 20 years, and another 20 years presenting Jim'll Fix It, where he made dreams come true for hundreds of children and families. Almost a year after his death, 13 British police forces received reports supporting allegations of sexual abuse, which has resulted in the launch of a formal criminal investigation, Operation Yewtree. The Metropolitan Police Service is still investigating the allegations today, pursuing over 400 separate lines of inquiry, based on evidence of 200 witnesses, via 14 police forces across the UK. Further inquiries into practices at the BBC, and within the National Health Service are also being conducted, in order to determine how the incidents could have been allowed to continue over such a prolonged period.

Mustard Glazed Gammon

Caramelised Parsnips and Baby Onions

Ingredients 2 1/2kg (5lb) boneless smoked gammon 500ml (1pt) bottle cider 3 parsnips, peeled and halved 2 sweet potatoes, peeled and each cut into 4 4 carrots, peeled and halved 2 leeks, each cut into 3 3 tbsp wholegrain mustard 4 tbsp light muscovado sugar Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C / 350°F / Gas 4. Put the gammon into a roasting tin and pour over the cider. Arrange the parsnips, sweet potatoes, carrots and leeks around the sides. Completely cover with foil. 2. Bake for 1 hr until the gammon is tender. Carefully peel away the dark fat skin, to reveal the white fat

covering on the gammon. 3. Score a diamond pattern on the fat and spread with the wholegrain mustard and sprinkle with the light muscovado sugar. 4. Return the gammon and vegetables back to the oven and continue to cook for 30 mins, uncovered until the gammon and vegetables are tender and brown.

Sweet Rosemary Roasties Ingredients 1 1/2 kg potatoes 4tbs maple syrup 4tbs olive oil 3 large sprigs rosemary, very finely chopped (about 2tsp chopped leaves

Method 1. Preheat oven to 200C°/400F°/gas 6 2. Peel the potatoes, cut into small chunks. Put into boiling salted water, return to boil and cook until beginning to soften. The inside should still be slightly firm. Drain. 3. Mix the remaining ingredients together in a large bowl. Tip in the cooked potatoes (which can be hot or cold) and gently toss them in the dressing. 4. Tip the coated potatoes, and any remaining dressing, onto a large non-stick baking tray and spread out into a single layer. Bake for about 30 mins until a mottled golden colour, when they will be slightly crispy. Cook for longer if you want them crispier.

Parsnip and Parmesan Mash Ingredients 1kg (2¼lb) parsnips, peeled and roughly chopped 60g (2oz) butter 4 tabsp milk Freshly ground nutmeg

Salt and ground black pepper For the topping: 3-4 tbsp grated Parmesan 50g (1¾oz) fresh white breadcrumbs 2-3 tbsp chopped parsley

Method 1. Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F, gas mark 6). 2. Bring a large pan of water to the boil and add the parsnips and par-boil for 5 mins. Drain and return to the pan to dry. 3. Mix together the soy sauce, honey, Dijon mustard, ginger and oil in a large bowl. 4. Add the parsnips and onions and toss until covered. 5. Place in a shallow roasting tin and cook uncovered, turning occasionally for 25 mins until tender, sticky and golden brown.

Ingredients 450g (1lb) parsnips, scrubbed and quartered 1tbsp soy sauce 1tbsp honey 1tsp Dijon mustard 2cm fresh root ginger, peeled and finely grated 2tbsp olive oil 225g (8oz) baby onions, peeled

Brussels Sprouts with Chestnut and Sage Butter Method 1. Put the butter, chestnuts and sage in a bowl and mix well. 2. Scrape the mixture onto a large piece of greaseproof paper and shape into a log. Wrap in the paper and refrigerate until firm. 3. Cook the sprouts in salted

boiling water for 10-12 minutes until tender. Drain. 4. Cut the chilled butter into slices. Toss 4 of the slices with the sprouts until they are well coated in butter, and season well. 5. Arrange the remaining slices on top and serve at once.

Ingredients 25g butter, softened 25g chestnuts, cooked, peeled and chopped 1 tsp chopped sage 300g Brussels sprouts

Method 1. Place parsnips in a large pan and cover with water. Bring to the boil, cover the pan and simmer gently for 15-20 mins until parsnips are tender. Drain well in a colander. 2. Add the butter and milk to the hot pan and bring to the boil. Return veg to pan and mash until smooth.

Add nutmeg and season. Spoon into an ovenproof dish; smooth surface. 3. Mix together the Parmesan, breadcrumbs and parsley and sprinkle over the top of the purée. 4. To serve, heat the purée in a warm to hot oven for about 20-30 mins.

Chestnut Bourguignon Pie Ingredients 110g dried chestnuts, soaked for 6-8 hours 2 bay leaves 1 sprig fresh rosemary or 1tsp / 5ml dried rosemary 210ml vegetarian/vegan red wine 300ml vegetable/vegan stock or water 25g butter or soya margarine 8 small pickling onions or shallots, peeled 110g chestnut mushrooms, wiped 50g button mushrooms, wiped 10ml Dijon mustard

30-45ml tamari or soy sauce freshly ground black pepper fresh parsley, finely chopped 225g vegetarian/vegan puff pastry, thawed if frozen

Method 1. Pre-heat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Place the soaked chestnuts, herbs and 5floz of wine in a saucepan with vegetable stock to cover and cook until just tender, approximately 50-60 minutes. 2. Drain the chestnuts, reserving the liquid. 3. Melt the butter or margarine in a frying pan and saute the onions until lightly browned. 4. Add the mushrooms and cook for a further 4-5 minutes. 5. Add the chestnuts, the remaining red wine and sufficient chestnut

cooking liquor to cover. 6. Bring to the boil and simmer for 20-30 minutes to reduce the liquid a little. 7. Stir in the mustard, tamari and black pepper to taste. Cook for a further 5 minutes. 8. Check seasoning and consistency and adjust as necessary. 9. Spoon the mixture into a pie dish. Roll out the pastry on a floured surface and place on top of filling. 10. Bake for about 20 minutes until golden

Seeded Parmesan Biscuits Ingredients 100g plain flour 100g unsalted butter Pinch of salt Pinch of cayenne pepper 100g Parmesan, finely grated 1 med egg, beaten, for glaze 1tbsp poppy seeds 1tbsp sesame seeds 2 baking sheets, lined with baking parchment

Method 1. Set the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas Mark 4. Tip the flour, butter, salt and cayenne pepper into a food processor and add most of the Parmesan. Whizz until the ingredients just bind together — if the dough feels very soft, wrap it in a freezer bag and chill in the fridge until it’s firm enough to handle. 2. Roll the dough out thinly, cut it into 3 x 7cm (1¼ x 2¾in) rectangles and put them on baking sheets. Chill for 10 mins before cooking. 3. Brush with egg glaze and

sprinkle seeds over one half of each biscuit, using poppy seeds on about half of the biscuits and sesame seeds on the rest. 4. Bake the biscuits for 10-15 mins, until they’re lightly golden, swapping around the trays in the oven if necessary. 5. Remove the biscuits from the oven and leave them to cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes, then transfer them to wire racks to cool completely. They’ll keep for up to a week in an airtight container.

Blueberry and Orange Trifle Ingredients 4 blueberry muffins 2 oranges 3-4 tbsp Grand Marnier or Coin-

treau 200g fresh blueberries 250-500g fresh vanilla custard 300ml whipping cream

Method 1. Slice the muffins and arrange them evenly in the base of a serving dish. 2. Finely grate the rind of 1 orange and zest in strips the rind of the other orange. Peel and segment oranges, catching any juice that runs out. 3. Mix the orange juice with the Grand Marnier, or Cointreau, and

spoon over muffins. Scatter over most of the blueberries and orange segments. Mix the finely grated orange rind into the custard and pour it over the muffins. 4. Whip the cream until it forms soft peaks and then spoon it on to the trifle. Scatter over the remaining blueberries and strips of orange zest. Keep the trifle chilled until serving.

Tomato and Chilli Chutney Method 1. Put half the tomatoes into a processor with the chillies, garlic, ginger and lemongrass. Whizz to a purée, then transfer to a heavy-based pan with the rest of the tomatoes. 2. Add the star anise, sugar and vinegar. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 50 mins, until the chutney is thickened. Skim off any scum. 3. Pour the chutney into the jars. Cover, seal and label. Store in the fridge and use within 1 month.

The Poinsettia The poinsettia is a culturally and commercially important plant species of the diverse spurge family that is indigenous to Mexico and Central America. It is particularly well known for its red and green foliage and is widely used in Christmas floral displays. It derives its common English name from Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first United States Minister to Mexico, who introduced the plant into the United States in 1825. Euphorbia pulcherrima is a shrub or small tree, typically reaching a height of 0.6 to 4 m. The plant bears dark green dented leaves that measure 7 to 16 cm in length. The coloured bracts, which are most often flaming red but can be orange, pale green, cream, pink, white or marbled, are often mistaken for flower petals because of their groupings and colors, but are actually leaves. The colours of the bracts are created through photoperiodism, meaning that they require darkness (12 hours at a time for at least 5 days in a row) to change color. At the same time, the plants require abundant light during the day for the brightest colour. With care, the poinsettia can be induced to re-

flower after the initial display when purchased. The red blooms should be pruned, and the plant moved outdoors. It should be returned indoors in the autumn to a room which is not lighted after sunset. The plant requires a period of uninterrupted long, dark nights for around two months in autumn in order to develop flow-

ers. When watering, it is important to allow the plant to drain out any excess water. Having a poinsettia sit in water can do harm to the plant as it prefers moist soil to direct water. Here are some tips for looking after your Christmas poinsettia: Take it out of the plastic cover. If it is in the home place it in plenty of light,

preferably by a window, and away from sources of heat such as radiators. Water moderately and directly into the plant pot. After Christmas the plant can be planted in the garden in a sunny spot. Remember that if the plant remains permanently in the garden if it close to a street lamp or any other light which is switched on for long durations there will be no flowers for the following Christmas. There is a common misconception that the poinsettia is highly toxic for humans and animals. This belief was spread by a 1919 urban legend of a two-year-old child dying after consuming a poinsettia leaf. While the sap and latex of many plants of the spurge plant family are indeed toxic, the poinsettia's toxicity is relatively mild. Its latex can cause an allergic reaction in sensitive individuals. It would not feel like Christmas in Spain without the splash of red of the poinsettia in the shops, municipal gardens, churches and our homes. Celebrating the Sixties!!! The 1960s is an era associated with various flamboyant trends in clothing and music, including the birth of British Pop. Better known as the “Swinging Sixties”, many of those who lived through it claim that there will never be anything like the euphoria that was felt by the youth of that day. The decade saw a plethora of historical events, new technology and discoveries that paved the way to contemporary Britain. Here is a summery of notable 60’s facts which should spark a few fond memories.

Population The population of Britain in 1960 stood at about 53 million, with the world’s population registering just over 3 billion. This is compared with around 62.262 million people living in Britain today.

A public demonstration of how a computer functions was organised for the first time in 1968. On-lookers were overwhelmed by video conferencing, teleconferencing, email, hypertext and the use of a mouse. In 1969, a research-oriented prototype of the Internet, known as “Arpanet” was unveiled.

Cost of Living Average house prices fell at around £2 530. A season ticket to see Manchester United cost £8.50. The first supermarkets were unveiled, mainly located within town centres. This was a revelation, as you could now buy everything that you wanted under one roof, and all at a reasonable price! You could buy a loaf of bread for 5p, and loaves were now available sliced.

Developments At Home In the 1960’s, tower blocks were considered a solution to the housing shortage caused by second world war damage and increased population. This led to ugly blocks of flats being built in many inner-city areas, completely changing the look of the landscape for good. Virtually all houses had an electricity supply, with the majority also owning a refrigerator and a cooker. Plastic buckets began to replace metal ones. In 1961, Kellog’s launched it tasty new cereal, Coco Pops. Ice lollies and choc ices on sticks became extremely popular.

Transport New motors of the 60’s included the Capri (1961), Consul Cortina ( 1963) and Ford Escort (1968), which replaced the Anglia. The first Intercity train was used in 1966, replacing the antiquated steam and diesel trains. The Anglo-French airliner “Concorde” made its first supersonic test flight in 1969.

Communications The audio cassette was invented in 1962, followed by Touch-Tone telephones in 1963. By 1965 Sony was racing ahead with technology, as it began to market the first home video tape recorder-CV-2000.

Television Most households owned a television by the end of the decade. Coronation Street was first aired in 1960, and Dr Who also hit our screens during that decade. Live trans-Atlantic satellite television via the Telstar satellite was made possible in 1962. BBC 2 went on air in 1964 and became the first channel to be shown in colour during 1967.

Computers The first computer video game, “Spacewar” was invented in 1962. The first successful Minicomputer, Digital Equipment Corporation’s 12bit PDP-8, was marketed in 1964.

Sierra Nevada

Ski Heaven If you are wondering what to do this Christmas, why not consider driving down to Europe’s most southern ski resort, and enjoy some fantastic skiing in one of Spain’s highest villages, in the Sierra Nevada. This is described as Spain’s best ski resort. It may not be the biggest, but where else do you need to wear sun tan lotion on the slopes, and can basque in the cafe terraces in between exhilarating skis down a range of slopes. At 2,150 metres the Sierra Nevada offers almost guaranteed snow, due to the snow machines that kick in when the sun starts to melt the snow. Both skiing and snow-boarding lessons are well catered for by a variety of schools in the village, and ski equipment is on hand to rent out all over the place. Beginners visiting Sierra Nevada will be pleased with the green and blue level of slopes on offer here, but the resort is probably best suited for intermediates. The long reds (the longest is 6.5km) runs all the way from the summit of Veleta mountain at 3398m down to the village at 2,150m. Advanced skiers will find some challenges including a men’s downhill world cup run. For snowboarders there is a well kept half pipe and board park and some opportunity for free-riding. Off the slopes there is plenty to do with saunas, a gym, snowmobiling, sleigh rides and plenty of shopping. The après ski is lively and typically Spanish- that means partying well into the early hours- and there are plenty of bars and clubs to party in.

Generally regarded as Spain's top ski resort, Sierra Nevada stands alone in the Penibetic mountain range in Andalucia, far from the country's other 30 or so ski areas, the majority of which are located 'up' in the Pyrenées. Once known as 'Sol-y-Nieve' or 'Sun and snow', the resort endeavours to offer the best of both worlds Sierra Nevada's 'resort´ village', Pradollano, is famous for staging the World Alpine Skiing Championships in 1996. The village area has been greatly upgraded with new alpine-style buildings. One of the best assets of the resort is a remarkable underground parking complex with a capacity of 2,880 vehicles. Another is the excellent indoor sports facility providing high altitude athletic training. There is also a new medical centre, child day-care centre, banks with ATM´s, supermarkets, sports and fashion boutiques. The resort works closely with Spain's Environmental Agency and the University of Granada has designed a complete programme to protect and preserve Sierra Nevada´s extraordinary wealth, including its geomorphology, landscape, flora and fauna. The area was declared a Biospherical Reserve by UNESCO in 1986. More than two thousand trees of different sizes have been introduced or transplanted throughout the village area. Sierra Nevada was the first European ski resort to introduce the 'green ski pass' to its environmental programme. Three per cent of income received from the sale of ski passes goes towards ecological matters.

Debate is continuing over a possible extension to the Sierra Nevada ski resort, with tourism chiefs keen to open a study into the possibility. However ecologists are against any expansion and the Junta de Andalucía has said it will ‘reflect’ on the matter. The ski resort currently offers as much as 105 kms of skiing. If you can, take advantage of the fact that the pistes are generally empty Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. You could have the snow all to yourself. The resort is just half an hour’s drive from Granada, so a visit to the Alhambra can even be combined with a skiing. Granada also offers a great Christmas market near the main cathedral, from December 6th to January 7th, and selling a variety of artisan products of all kinds, ranging from food, clothes, local hand-made decorations, and an endless array of articles that will serve as some excellent gift ideas. Furthermore, on the same square you can try the best churros (fried dough pastry-based snack spinkled with sugar) in the city. There are a couple of cafeterias that specialise in these delicious treats which are accompanied by thick hot chocolate in winter. And in the Plaza del Carmen Square don’t forget to see the nativity scene, which all Spanish towns and villages have.

By Heidi Wardman Exchanging presents is a fundamental part of our Christmas celebrations, and depending whether you are a shopaholic or shopaphobic, can be an exciting or stressful element in your festive preparations the giving and receiving of gifts developed from the Christmas story, when the three wisemen travelled to Bethlehem to present gifts to the baby Jesus. The tradition was adopted by families across the globe, who began to exchange gifts with loved ones, as sign of affection, to wish them prosperity and even heal rifts where relationships have broken down. However, selecting a thoughtful and appropriate gift for all of those close to you can be quite traumatic, especially at times when money is tight. To ensure that you make the correct choice, and are not tempted to make a last minute purchase after a long day at the stores, it is best to sit down and think about who you need to buy gifts for and what type of things they are interested in. Bear in mind that a personalised gift is always going to give more pleasure to the receiver than a generalised one, so even dropping a few subtle hints can help to make your Christmas shopping experience go more smoothly and put you in the good books. Here are a few ideas which might offer some inspiration.

Gifts For Her

Clothes: Most women love clothes, and even with a wardrobe full they will still never have enough. However, if buying for someone else, it is best to think about the colour and style of clothing that they usually choose. If possible, take a look through their wardrobe and make a note of sizes and cuts which she usually opts for- after all, it is pointless buying a sexy mini skirt for someone that lives in jeans!

Accessories: These are another popular choice and offer a wealth of options, depending how much you are hoping to spend. Alternatively, as we are living in Spain, why not invest in a chic pair of sunglasses to add a practical yet perfect finish to her favourite outfits.

Jewellery: Again, jewellery offers endless options, according to your budget and who you are buying for. If it is a friend you are more likely to choose fashionable costume jewellery, whilst a piece set with semiprecious stones would be ideal for a family member. When buying for a loved one, the gift should be extra special, so something made with Silver, Gold or Platinum would be perfect, and not forgetting that diamonds are a girl’s best friend of course!

Cosmetics: These might include perfumes, make-up or beauty products. However, it is not just a case of buying a bottle of bubble bath if you really want to impress. Most women have a signature smell, so make the effort to sniff out what her favourite fragrance is; and certain range of cosmetics which suit their colouring and skin type. Before you throw that fire engine red lipstick into your basket and rush to the check-out, ask yourself “Have I ever seen her wearing this colour”. If the answer is no, the chances are that she won’t! Flowers: You can never go wrong with flowers (unless she has an allergy that is!) They are the perfect way of expressing feelings and emotions for those who find it difficult to put things into words. However, be careful that you do not rely on them as an easy option. If you can combine them with a small personalised gift it will show that you have put some thought into the present.

Holidays: If she doesn’t give any indication of what she wants and you are completely stuck for ideas, why not whisk her away for a romantic weekend or longer break somewhere? This will do you both the world of good and you needn’t go wild if money is tight. It is the escape from normality which counts, and can help to build a stronger relationship for the future- which is far more valuable than any diamond ring in my book!

One thing is for sure, he doesn’t need another tie, wallet or pair of socks! Again, it is best to think about things that he likes to do rather than opt for the standard gifts which will end up at the back of a drawer.

Clothes: Whilst most women buy clothes for a special occasion or simply because they like them, men buy them when they really need them. A favourite pair of jeans and T-shirt can last for years, so if you think that its time to update the look then it may be up to you to take the initiative. Of course, this still means choosing clothes that he will be comfortable in, rather than what you think will look good! If he is most at home in casual clothes, then a selection of printed T-shirts is a winner, and a pair of smart jeans will help to refresh his image rather than alter it!

Aftershave: Most men do like to smell nice too, although wouldn’t usually go out and purchase smellies for themselves. Therefore, Christmas is the perfect time to splash out on his favourite scent.

Sport Accessories: If your other half is a sports fan, there are a plethora of gift options which will put a smile on his face. A round of golf or new set of clubs perhaps; or a day spent at the race track or quad biking? Tickets to go and watch his favourite team are guaranteed to go down a treat, or why not try to find out if there are any big matches coming up for an extra special surprise. Football shirts and other equipment are also top choices.

Entertainment: Does he have a favourite singer or band that has recently released a new album? Or maybe an Actor who he likes has just released a movie? Alternatively, if he reads, why not purchase the latest offering from his favourite Author. Any of these will provide great stocking fillers and show your man that you have paid attention to the things that interest him.

Road Trip: Everyone loves to get out and about, so for a really memorable Christmas gift, why not plan a day out somewhere. There is a wealth of interesting places to visit across the Costa Blanca, but how many of us really take the time to go out and explore? Plan ahead so that you are not driving around aimlessly and be sure to make plenty of stops, to take in the sights and local dishes along the way. You could even extend the day with an evening meal and overnight stay somewhere for a romantic finish to your adventure.

In 2007, the introduction of the third-generation CR-V marked the first CR-V to feature a vertically opening tailgate, a feature made possible by removing the spare wheel from the back door. Lower in height, shorter in length and wider than its predecessors, it offered improved on-road dynamics. Over five million CR-Vs have been sold across the world since its introduction in 1995 and the new, fourth generation builds on the success of its predecessors with even greater quality, practicality and refinement. The model that helped define the compact-SUV sector has been comprehensively redesigned for the European market. For the first time in Europe, the new CR-V will be offered with a choice of both two and four-wheel drive, while improvements to both the petrol and diesel engines have resulted in a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. New to the 2013 CRV is "LANE KEEPING ASSIST SYSTEM" (LKAS) Designed for dual carriageway or motorway use, Honda's Lane Keeping Assist System helps keep the car in its lane. The system detects the lane markings using a camera mounted at the top of the windscreen. If you indicate, the system will switch to standby mode, but if it senses that you are about to leave your lane without indicating, it will automatically apply corrective steering, while issuing a visual and audible warning. The system applies up to 80% of the steering force required, with the driver providing the final 20%. LKAS maintains the position of the car in its lane by providing steering torque when necessary - significantly reducing driver fatigue and helping to prevent accidents. For the system to work, the driver has to keep contact with the steering wheel if the system fails to recognise the driver's input on the steering, it will switch itself off. LKAS can operate between 72 and 180 kmph on roads with clear and visible left and right lane boundary markings where there are no really sharp bends.

Windows 8 - It’s almost not terrible!

That’s the title of a great YouTube video by teksyndicate.com and it’s one of the most accurate, in my opinion, independent reviews of Windows 8 that I have seen. I thought it was just me, that I was getting old, and that I had no time or excitement for new operating system software. To my relief I found that I have not turned into a techy version of Victor Meldrew – well not yet anyway (those of you that know me - stop laughing NOW!). No it WAS Windows 8, it really is that bad and this month we take a look at why. If you would like to see the video you can check it out at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0fsyb-ttcw Windows 8, for those of you that have been living under a ‘media free’ rock for the past 6 months, is the latest operating system from Microsoft. Previously we had Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP - yes their numbering system leaves something to be desired doesn’t it! Anyway, it’s the latest and should therefore be the “best”, but I’m afraid that it falls very short of the mark in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong, I love Microsoft products. I have been an evangelist of them for years, trying to walk the tightrope of reason between those people that maintain that “only Apple” will do and those that insist that “Microsoft is the best”. The truth is, as usual in these instances, somewhere in the middle, Microsoft have had a hard job in the past ensuring backward compatibility with thousands of third party products where Apple have the design and marketing war pretty much won hands down. So what’s wrong with Windows 8 then? Well it’s a bit of a Frankenstein’s monster really. Microsoft have clearly tried to create an operating system that works as well on the new

tablet and touch screen computers but also works for the traditional mouse and keyboard driven computers and they have failed dramatically! They have created a new, beautiful menu interface called “Modern UI”, formally known as “Metro” and its generally accepted as being very well designed and used on a touch screen or tablet computer it’s amazing, it slides from page to page in much the same way as you would expect, however use it with a mouse and things become a little different, for example, to move the screen to the left you have to scroll down! What I find frustrating is that Windows 8 is so different to its predecessor that it’s going to be very hard for some people to move to it, for example in all of the last, at least, 5 versions of Windows you have been able to shut the computer down by clicking on the start button and then select an option (usually shutdown). It has always been a running joke by non-Microsoft aficionados that to shut the computer down you have to click “Start”, but anyway it’s a standard that has been used for the past 15 years or so but not now! Now you have to move the mouse to the bottom right hand corner of the screen, hover it there (don’t click because that does something different!), then wait for a new menu panel to appear (Microsoft have called these “charms”, for no apparent reason), then select the icon that looks like a cog (settings) and then finally click on the icon that looks like an on off button (circle with a line through the top) – not only more steps but a total depart from an accepted standard for years. Windows 8 really feels like two interfaces “stuck” together, the nice, pretty “Modern UI” and the standard desktop type interface, but they really don’t work together well, for example if you use Internet Explorer in the first in-

terface, and then use a desktop application and end up in the same program in the desktop interface the two don’t share information. So the page that you were first in isn’t transferred to the same program in the desktop interface – it’s just so clunky, it’s hard to believe that these things were not picked up in the reported 1.24 billion testing hours that were done for windows 8! Also (and read into this what you will) Steven Sinofsky, head of the Windows division at Microsoft has left, just a few short weeks after the products launch. Microsoft have not given any reason for his departure, however some speculate that he has been let go because of the poor reception of Windows 8 and that maybe he will be used as a scapegoat if it ultimately fails. Don’t get me wrong, there are some really nice features in Windows 8, for example I love the new task manager and the file copy graphics, and the work that has been done in Windows explorer is great, but for the “standard” user and certainly for the expat demographic here on the Costas I would not recommend moving to it and I would seriously consider downgrading to Windows 7 if I were to purchase a new computer with Windows 8 on it. To end on a positive note, there is one feature that is fantastic for those of us that live on the Costas and want to buy a computer from a Spanish store. Windows 8 is the first operating system that allows language changes straight out of the box, so previously if you had bought a computer from Carrefour for example with a previous version of Windows on it, there was no legal way to change its language without spending more money upgrading it to Ultimate edition. Now with Windows 8 it’s much easier, just ask your computer guy for help.
