THE NIGHT THE RAINS CAME Electric storms hit after record highs

By ALEX TRELINSKI Large parts of the Costa Blanca and the Murcia region had a Monday to remember as the long hot summer ended with major cloudbursts and electrical storms that saw Torrevieja dumped with 40 litres of rain per square metre in just one hour. Localised flooding as well as dramatic thunder and lightning across local skies produced a level of “Gota Fria” intensity that had not been seen in a long while, with the greatest amount being in the late evening. Weather experts say that a vast rotating thunderstorm was created between Murcia and Orihuela, which led to the big downpours and electrical storms in the Vega Baja area, in addition to the big bursts of rain and wind that hit the region, coming in from the sea. The fall out varied from area to area, with Torrevieja leading with some 19 litres of rain falling per square metre in just 25 minutes, causing flooding in places like the Paseo de la Libertad and the Rambla Juan Mateo. 30 litres per hour fell in Orihuela City, whilst there was flooding in parts of Almoradi, San Isidro and Callosa de Segura, where a palm tree collapsed close

to the railway station. Fruit and vegetable crops were affected by a combination of torrential rain and hail. Other parts of the Costa Blanca region saw Elche hit by a big electrical storm, which caused a small bushfire in addition to localised street flooding, whilst areas

Pedro Grimao like Alcoy and Benidorm had only comparatively light rainfall, though the storms could easily be observed. Jorge Olcina, of the University of Alicante’s climatology department said that “the conditions are right for severe thunderstorms to form. The Mediterranean sea is so warm at the moment that storms can form and dump 30 or 40 litres in a few minutes." Heavy showers and storms continued in some areas during the week with an unsettled forecast for the weekend.

ROJALES FIGHT HAM FISTED CONTINUES

A 27-year-old man has been sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison and ordered to pay €7,960 in compensation for stealing a cured ham worth €640 and then assaulting two Guardia Civil officers. The would-be ham bandit smashed a car window in the western city of Badajoz in 2011, and helped himself to the juicy looking serrano joint. NEW TENNER

The brand-new 10-euro note became legal tender in Spain last Tuesday and in the other 17 EU member states which use the euro. It has been redesigned to make it harder to forge and more durable, and each note features a portrait of a different character from Greek mythology in the hologram, plus a watermark. They will also carry a number which changes colour from emerald-green to dark blue when the note is tipped up. Like the new five-euro notes, which came into circulation in May 2013, the 10-euro version will have a protective coat meaning it will not have to be replaced so often as it will last longer, thus reducing costs for the European Central Bank (BCE) and being kinder to the environment.

THIEVES CAUGHT

Two men who decided to steal a car in the Cartagena area last month, but they didn’t know that two undercover National Police officers were sitting in it, have been arrested. The armed robbers struck on August 16th, and the two policemen with guns pointing in their faces, were forced to handover everything they had, before one of the gang members drove the VW Golf away, with his accomplices fleeing in two other cars. The arrests were made in the Mar Menor and La Manga area.

TUNNEL VISION

UNCLE SAM HELPS

The 120 metre long tunnel used by robbers in a foiled bank raid in Elche last month, still hasn’t been fully sealed. Residents in the area around the Church of the Sacred Heart in the city say they’re worried about security, whilst Elche mayor, Mercedes Alonso, has said that the tunnel is not municipal property and not their responsibility. She added though that some kind of agreement would hopefully be reached soon to close the tunnel, and reassured residents that there are no problems with any utility services that may have been affected by the “construction” of the tunnel. Meanwhile the gang is still on the run from the authorities.

A 46 year old San Pedro del Pinatar man has been arrested for allegedly having 73 thousand files of child pornography on his computer. The Guardia Civil acted on a tip off from the American state agency who had been monitoring the distribution of child porn via the internet between a number of people in Spain. The Guardia tracked the man down as part of their antichild porn Operation Fondón, and seized four computers and six USB sticks. The accused also had set up a network of E-mail accounts to distribute the images.

HONEYMOON L ET TI NG CALL DISASTER A newlywed bride suffered 'horrific' lifec h a n g i n g injuries after being run down by a car - on her Costa Blanca honeymoon, reports the UK Daily Mail. Beautician Joanna Rose was celebrating her marriage to Andrew after jetting off for a relaxing break in Torrevieja. But after being hit by the car and thrown into the air, she was left seriously ill in hospital with multiple and serious injuries, including a fractured spine. The 38-year-old beautician also suffered five broken ribs, internal bleeding, cuts and bruising to her face, head and body and, due to the force of the impact, one of her crowns in her mouth became dislodged. After the accident Mrs Rose was rushed to Torrevieja Hospital, where she stayed for two weeks before being transferred back to the UK to Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. She is now at home in Wakefield and has to wear a full body brace and faces surgery to insert pins in her spine to stabilise it. The mother-of-one said: 'I feel like I have been to hell and back - my honeymoon was completely ruined as I spent the entire two weeks in hospital battling for my life.' Andrew recalls hearing a screech of tyres and a loud bang, he then turned round to see his new wife flying through the air and hitting the windscreen of the car before she fell to the floor.

Costa Blanca's tourist apartment association, APTUR, hit the streets o f To r r e v i e j a l a s t w e e k end to warn visitors not to rent unregistered holiday homes. Passers-by on Avenida Libertad were given leaflets by APTUR members, including the association president, Miguel Sotillos, who said that 65 per cent of Costa Blanca's holiday lettings were not registered and regulated.

Mrs Rose said: 'Andrew and I were walking along a road when the accident happened. I remember hearing a loud bang behind us then suddenly landing on the road with a thud and feeling instant and excruciating pain in my back. 'I was rushed to hospital where I was told that I had fractured my spine, and over the next few days I realised the full extent of the injuries I had suffered as I was in agony. The couple have a four-year-old daughter Poppy who was also on holiday with them at the time, but luckily was back at the hotel being looked after by her grandmother. Now Mrs Rose has instructed specialist International Personal Injury lawyers at Irwin Mitchell to investigate the accident and help provide funds for her recovery and rehabilitation Philip Banks, representing her, said: 'We are currently making investigations as to any criminal proceedings which are being conducted in Spain against the driver and to establish insurance details of the driver to help with Joanna's case.

RICH PICKINGS An Orihuela area man who guarded his marijuana plantation with a sword has had his crops taken away by the local police. The 44 year old grew his drugs on a hillside next to San Antón church, with the police uncovering a room in the plantation sheds where several roosters were fighting each other. A tent was spotted outside the plantation with a large sword in it which led the authorities to believe that the man would sleep there overnight to protect his illegal activities. The man, who was not there at the time, was subsequently arrested and admitted being the owner of the roosters, the sword, and of course the marijuana plants.

NO SHOW

A murder trial in Elche has stopped before it has even started after the accused man failed to appear in court on Monday, where he was to answer charges involving a killing in Pilar de la Horardada back in 2008. It’s believed that he may have fled to his native country of Morocco, after being charged in connection with the incident on a building site six years ago, with both men being accused of not being employed legally, with other people trying to cover up the crime because of that fact.

JUANS OK FUELLING FAIRGROUND HORROR ANGER

The numbers of UK recipients of winter fuel allowance living abroad, including Spain, has risen to record levels. A total 139,000 people were paid the benefit for the last winter, British Government figures reveal. The comparable figure for two years previously – the winter of 2011-12 – was 75,000. The value of the payouts, which are worth up to £300 per household, has risen proportionately. The total paid in this benefit to expats in 2013-14 was £22m, a record figure. This compares to the £13m figure for 2011-12. By far the biggest population of expats in receipt of this benefit live in Spain with nearly 50 thousand benefitting last winter, with France next on the list at just under 30 thousand. As a cost-cutting measure, the Government announced that from next year, payments would only be made to recipients living in countries where the average winter temperature was as low as or lower than Britain's warmest region, which would take Spanish claimants pretty much out of the equation. The measure though, with a General Election to be held next spring, still has to be approved by MPs.

By Andrew Atkinson A 12-year-old girl was electrocuted last Saturday by a fairground ride in the Sevilla area. The youngster collapsed after getting off an attraction known as 'The Saucepan', a roundabout which goes up and tilts, in the early hours of the morning in Maribáñez, a parish of the town of Los P a l a c i o s y Vi l l a f r a n c a . Medics rushed to the scene, where they found the child unconscious with no pulse, but all attempts to bring her round failed. Another young girl who was on the same ride was taken for observation to a Sevilla hospital. A forensic examination on the girl confirmed she d i e d f r o m e l e c t r o c u t i o n , w i t h G u a r d i a C i v i l o ff i c e r s spending the whole of Saturday quizzing the fairground organisers. One of Spain's leading horsemen, international dressage rider and breeder, Dolores- based Juan Cortes, was hospitalized - hours after appearing in a horse show in Torremendo. Cortes was appearing at Casa La Pedrera's Flamenco and Horse show earlier this month. "Juan is alright, but the hospital wanted to keep him in overnight," said Emma J. Tytherleigh, who appeared alongside Cortes in Torremendo. “He’s out of hospital now and feeling better. Cortes is back at work in Dolores: "Juan's fine now, he had a lot of fluid on his elbow and it got worse as the night went on," added Emma. "When we got home after the show, he was rushed off to the doctor and they sent him to A&E. True to form, he was back to working horses Monday morning." Cortes, a former rider of the Royal Andalusian School of Jerez, is a leading world figure in Classical Dressage. He owns Stud Farm in Dolores, which specialises in breeding rare coloured Spanish horses and has supplied animals to top equestrian centres in Camica Do Pont, America, and Philip Arias in France. BUSY SUMMER

Torrevieja is considering extending the lifeguard service on the area’s beaches next summer, with an earlier start in June. This follows news that the Red Cross saved 230 bathers, which was up by six point eight per cent on the 2013 figures. Nearly four thousand people were treated over this season, mainly for sunburn and being bitten by insects.

BETTER PLACE

Guardamar council it’s been a safer summer in the city thanks to close co-operation between the local police and the Guardia Civil. Over 30 thousand euros has been invested in a new digital communication system for the local police, with rural and garden theft being reduced, as well stamping out illegal street sellers.

HOSPITAL BOOST

Orihuela’s Vega Baja hospital is to get a one million euro re-vamp, with most of the money going to its emergency department. Exact details have yet to be announced but there has been steady criticism over recent months over the state of parts of the hospital, leading to the upgrading of beds and furniture.

POPULAR COSTA

The Costa Blanca continues to lead the way for foreign buyers of houses in Spain, with more than double the number of deals done in the Malaga area on the Costa del Sol. Official figures from the Ministry of Development show that nearly four thousand properties were sold in the region to non-

Spanish purchasers in the second quarter of 2014, keeping the area at the top for foreign house hunters. New home building figures are looking promising with the returns for this year already above the full total for 2013, with Torrevieja and the Orihuela Costa showing the greatest activity.

STUMBLING FUTURE? Emigration from Spain could seriously affect the country’s future economic growth, the Spanish central bank said in a report on Wednesday in which it also warned Spain’s recovery could slow in the final months of 2014. Both the current rate of emigration of foreign residents from Spain and of Spaniards themselves could “have a significant effect on the potential growth of the Spanish economy”, said the bank in its September monthly bulletin. “With the arrival of the crisis, the number of migrants working in the Spanish economy has changed radically,” said the report’s authors. They noted that around a million migrated

to Spain in 2007, that number was just 342,000 in 2013. At the same time, some 500,000 people left Spain last year.

waste not, want not

I want to thank everybody who came out last Sunday for the demonstration over the plans to redevelop Cala Mosca on the Orihuela Costa. Cala M o s c a means 2000 h o u s e s more that we do not need. Each single new h o u s e means a loss of the value of our homes, and more than 3000 for sale in the area, do we really need more building? If you do not do anything, when it is time for you to sell your houses, the value will be minimal. Even if you do not want to sell yours, 2000 more properties means

sharing the water, the old drainage system, the congested roads....Do we need them?

There are more than 2500 events worldwide taking place right now. We have been one of them. You have been there, thanks. IF you have not been there, then you should think about why and if you think than drinking beer, swimming and relaxing is more

important, then when the water runs out and you complain, then you are the one to blame, only yourself. We want to help the f i g h t against clim a t e change, and this year has locally been the driest in 135 years. Two more like this, and we’ll have no drinking and bathing water left and there’ll be more fires. We need to think and ask yourself if you are doing enough for Mother Earth. You have the answer. Roman Jimenez Gil, Organiser, RALLY TO SAVE CALA MOSCA.

BANGERS IN THE NIGHT

It’s the first time that I’ve been over here that I’ve witnessed such a storm that we got on Monday night in the Quesada area. It was quite a sight as well as sound, but it did to a very small degree remind me of a whole load of fireworks that have been set off in the last week or so in the early morning that

woke me, my wife, and our two frightened dogs. With the row over live music in the area seemingly calming down, I trust the authorities are going to do something about these bangers being let off on non-fiesta occasions which are far noisier and more antisocial than some fat man trying to do a karaoke

routine at a local bar. Of course, nothing will be done.

A DATE WITH DISASTER

I ONCE took a girl called Paula to the pictures. It turned out to be our first and final date. Paula insisted that we kept an empty seat between us. There were two reasons for this.

Firstly, she didn't want me seated too close because she feared I might chip her heavily-lacquered backcombed bouffant-styled hair. And secondly, she needed the empty seat next to her in order to pile up the sicklysweet cinema snacks she asked me to purchase every quarter hour. My nightmare night out took place more than 50 years ago. I sometimes wonder what happened to Paula. I fear that nowadays she will be both bald and toothless after all that hair lacquer and all those chocs and toffees. The point I am trying to make is that The Great Escape -- the film Paula and I watched together (well, almost together bearing in mind the empty seat) -- is a great movie. Despite the continuous distraction of hard hair being patted and chewy chocolates being chomped, I somehow managed to pull the shutters down on Paula's presence and semiconcentrate on Steve McQueen and company tunnelling out of their Second World War prison camp. Indeed, I found the film so engrossing that I went to see it again a few days later but this time unaccompanied. 'You're better on your own anyway,' observed Mrs S the other evening. I stared sullenly at her. 'And what is that supposed to mean?' Mrs S shrugged. 'It means what it means,' she explained. But I still didn't know what she meant so I asked her to further enlighten me. 'All I'm saying, dear husband, is that you are crazy. Even your mother and father said you were quite mad.' Mrs S stopped speaking suddenly. Obviously, she had realised that she had gone too far and had crossed a line. I waited for her to apologise. She took a deep breath and said: 'Even your grandmother said you were crazy. But she was

Lithuanian so you didn't quite grasp her meaning.' 'That is true,' I conceded sadly. 'All those years when I believed she was calling me The Special One, she actually meant The Strange One. I swore that I would never trust a Lithuanian-toEnglish dictionary again.' Mrs S rose from her chair. 'I'm off to bed now. Why don't you watch some television.' 'Why? Is it Christmas?' I queried. 'There's no need to be sarcastic!' snapped Mrs S. 'Huh?' I responded puzzled. 'I know exactly what you meant,' she said. 'You are saying that by retiring early I am leaving you in peace and that my withdrawal from your company is my advance Xmas gift to you.' It was my turn to rise from my chair but I collapsed back into it because both of my legs had gone numb. I have to admit that I was more used to sitting on a bar stool than relaxing in my own living room. But I digress. 'First of all,' I said to Mrs S, 'You always claim to know exactly what I mean whereas I never do know what YOU mean. In that respect, our marriage has little meaning. 'Secondly, you got it

wrong this time because when I asked if it were Christmas it was only because The Great Escape is always on the telly during the festive season and I thought I might watch it if you were going to bed early.' 'Blimey,' said Mrs S. 'For the first time in our wedded bliss I find I must apologise to you for misinterpreting the situation. But more importantly, how many more times can you watch The Great Escape?' 'It's one of my favourite films,' I said. 'And I've only watched it more than 100 times. Sometimes, I watch it with my eyes shut and just listen to the music. At other times, I squeeze my ears shut and speak the dialogue with the characters -although the people seated near me in the cinema never used to like me doing that.' Anyway, the night of my first and only date with Paula ended when I took her to her bus stop. We shook hands -- no kiss because her lips were crusty with slivers of sweeties -- and she said: 'We must do this again some time.' 'No thanks,' I said. 'I'd rather blowtorch my nasal hairs.' Paula tickled me under the chin. 'That's what I like about you, David. You're crazy.'

JUMBO BONUS SHANI’S SPECIAL SONG

Torrevieja singer/songwriter Shani Ormiston was so moved by last year’s Typhoon Haiyan disaster in the Philippines that she wrote a special song and made sure that the proceeds from it went directly to the country via theTorrevieja Costa Lions Club. Shani, composed "Fill a Heart With Hope" and with the collaboration of producer Manuel Ortega, produced a CD which was made available on CDBaby and iTunes to download for only 99 cents. Shani contacted the Torrevieja Costa Lions Club to ask that they handle all proceeds from the CD, and last week Lion President Iain Bennett was delighted to receive the sum of 330 euros which is now on its way to the Philippines. This donation brings the total raised by the Torrevieja Costa Lions appeal for the Philippines to 12,120.00 US Dollars. ALZHEIMER’S HELP

A brand new group for Alzheimer’s sufferers and their families has been formed for the Mar Menor area, with the association having its formal opening last week in San Pedro. Just over a year ago some British people with husbands, wives, and mothers who suffered f r o m A l z h e i m e r ’s and other forms of dementia started meeting on a fortnightly basis to give the carers support. Eventually it was decided, with the help of Raquel Pena, to approach San Pedro

Town Hall to see if they could get some premises where they could have a Day Care Centre, which led to the formation of AMMA, the Alzheimer’s Mar Menor Association. Many people attended the official opening, including San P e d r o M a y o r , Visitacion Martinez, as well as representatives from the Campoverde Theatre Group who presented AMMA with a cheque which has helped to kick-start the group.

MY NEW FRIEND MABEL

We, as all other animal rescue services, are always busy and at the moment we have so many animals we are looking after that have to have daily medical treatment. It is a cross between animal rescue and an animal hospital! A few weeks ago we rescued Mabel, who is a twelve week old female German Shepherd puppy, from Almeria perrera. She was in danger of being put to sleep, so I drove down to rescue her. She is blind and partially deaf and to add to this, she proved positive to parvovirus.

Thankfully, she has now survived the parvovirus. The timing of rescuing Mabel was really difficult, as just hours after collecting her from Almeria, I had to dash to Alicante Airport to get a flight back to London for my dear Mum’s funeral. On returning to Spain, I now had a chance to really get to know

Mabel and soon realised that she became very fearful, the moment you touched her. Many would have said that it would have been kinder to put her to sleep, but I am writing this article in testimony

of a dog’s amazing power to accept their ailments and to make the best of life and what they have. After a few days, Mabel became used to us stroking her and a couple of days after this my heart melted, as she approached me in the garden, with a big smile on her face and gave me a big play bow, as she invited me to play with her.

German Shepherds are known as ‘velcro dogs’, because they follow you everywhere and this little girl is no exception, as she has become an extension of my

left leg! I took her on her first proper lead walk a few days ago and she really did great. She was slow to start walking, but this is where I had to show patience and not force her. After a while, she started putting one foot in front of the other. I had to give her all the time she needed, as I knew this was a huge moment for her. To now be in a new environment (the outside), with all the different noises, she

had to put all of her trust in me, as I guided her up the street. I was so proud of her, I could have cried. There was one moment when part of the pavement went up into a little slope and as she tried to walk back down, she froze for a moment, as she tried to work out whether it was safe to carry on walking. Her little feet dug into the concrete as she showed her concern, but with some gentle persuasion, this brave little girl carried on walking, despite having to get past, what was to her, a huge obstacle. Because she totally trusts me now, I have become her eyes, her guide. This is an important reminder, that although a dog may have huge handicaps, as long as they have the use of their nose, then they will be fine. A dog’s nose, is the equivalent of our eyes. They smell the world, we see the world. Yesterday, I walked towards her and she was in a deep sleep. Normally, most dogs would wake at this point, because their hearing is so superior to ours that they would have detected someone walking towards

them. Because Mabel’s hearing is so poor, she did not have a clue I was right next to her, as she remained all cosy and

curled up, sleeping away. When she did wake up, she came up to me and gave me another play bow, to ask if it was playtime again! She is a happy, dear and gentle little soul and she is an inspiration to everyone she meets. Once again, here is a dog proving to humans that if you remain positive in the face of adversity, you can still go on to experience peace and happiness every day. It’s all about acceptance and your state of mind. It just so happens, that our furry best friends ALWAYS choose their state of mind to be positive. We can too, if we want. www.thedogyouneed.com is a registered charity, where we rehabilitate the most severely abused animals. Our charity registration number is 1157175. ROUND OFF THE YEAR IN STYLE I need to get in shape. I know most of us decide to make a New Year’s resolution to get fit or lose a few pounds, or maybe think about it before the summer so we can look good on the beach or in the pool. If you read my column regularly, you will know that I am not exactly one of that crowd and I’ve never have been one to blindly follow, preferring to walk my own little route through life´s ups and downs. I decide what to do and get on with it. Life is about treading a new path not following the crowds, and after all that is where we find ourselves and discover new things. If we follow everyone else, how can we make new discoveries or stretch ourselves? Therefore I find that if everyone is doing something, I am the one walking off in another direction. I´ve never worried about the new fashions or hairstyles. My make-up reflects who I am, and I have my own style in everything, from what I wear to how I speak. Of course there are times when I overlap with the rest of popular culture but on the whole I am a bit of a loner. I did try and embark on a fitness regime last spring with the hope of getting fit by summer but work took over which meant I lost the time I had aside, and so I spent the summer relaxing, enjoying the weather but not really doing anything to improve my shape! So, I’ve decided that the time has come again for me to tone up and get fit, and it’s going to be a long road as I have to start watching again what I´m eating. The biggest hurdle I know though is just finding the time to get round to those work out sessions! Once October kicks in, my little fella will be at school all day and I´ve managed to arrange my working hours to hopefully give myself a bit more free time, and therefore I should be able to find some time for me, to keep in shape and also have time for other day to day things. Taking regular exercise is one of the most important things we can do for our body, and as we get older the changes

become more noticeable, as it gets harder to do things we once took for granted, but it´s also never too late to start! Of course, if you´ve never done anything in recent times, then going for a five mile run would be out of the question but getting and staying fit is the one thing we do have in our control. We can´t stop becoming ill with life threatening diseases; that is not in our power, but we can eat healthily and go for a walk every day. A recent study showed that those people on chemotherapy who also did exercise had better results from the treatment than those who did nothing but have the treatment. But at the end of the day, we should want to be as fit as possible just for ourselves, for our day to day comfort. I couldn´t imagine being overweight, struggling to walk or do anything for myself, getting out of breath waking down the street, and this is why I´m determined to get back into my routine, otherwise I would blow up like a hot air balloon. My genetics are predisposed to putting weight on my hips and bottom half, and I really don´t want to end up like so many older women I´ve seen. That said, this is a personal opinion, and I am doing this because I want to, as I don´t like myself with a big bum and fat thighs and so I will do something about it! Another point to think about is that obesity costs the health service a lot of money, cash that could be better spent on saving lives of those with the illnesses life has cruelly dealt them, so taking care of yourself is also doing the country a favour. I´m not preaching and I hope none of you take this article as such, but all I´m saying is think about your health. Don´t plod along behind everyone else but be the leader in your own race. One day you will look back on 2014 and how you remember it depends on where you are now. You have the choice to make at the end of this year and a choice to reminisce fondly about the 12 months or make it a year to rather forget. Choose wisely.

GORDON GETS GOING There’s always something quite touching for me when an old political beast resurfaces and then delivers in spades.

But I’ve been quite taken aback by how good ex-PM Gordon Brown was in the final days of the Scottish Referendum campaign, as he passionately pleaded with voters to say “no”. How

much of an effect it had on the final result over a week ago, I don’t know, but I was fascinated to see a man that was totally rejuvenated as opposed to the busted flush of a PM that he was when

he lost office in 2010. There was a fire in the belly that I never saw when he was occupied in his battles with Tony Blair as Chancellor and then in the top job in Downing Street that he coveted so much. He looked a genuinely broken man when he left Number 10 for the last time with his family over four y e a r s ago, but now we have a very diff e r e n t creature. Sharp, tough, and even amusing at times in

his appearances, with past baggage removed and totally revitalised. Many Labour MPs are already calling for Brown to be given the job of leading the party in Scotland, and based on recent weeks, Ed Miliband would be foolish not to give him that post. What was thought to be a liability that was gently heading into retirement, could well turn into a big boost for Labour trying to rally their Scottish supporters at the next general election in the spring. Election defeats bring resignations, and that’s the case for the SNP leader, and Scottish First Minister, Alex Salmond, who is standing down after being defeated last week. This will light the blue touch paper for the Scottish National Party. There are loads of warring factions that have kept quiet within it for the sake of the referendum campaign, and now that’s finished, there’s a serious danger of open war-

fare breaking out over future policies. Labour, and to a lesser degree the Liberal Democrats, could end up licking their lips here if the SNP starts to implode, whilst the Conservatives will have absolutely nothing to feast on in Scotland. Long gone are the days when the annual UK party conferences dominated the news and filled countless hours of television time. Did you know for example that Labour was meeting in Manchester earlier this week? Nobody, barring activists, pays any attention to these gatherings and so it all boils down to the various leaders getting a good 30 second sound-bite from their keynote speeches that they can get onto the various bulletins. The political parties themselves have a lot to answer for in terms of seeming more and more remote and irrelevant, and you can bet a high sum that the next general election turnout will

WHAT TO DO IF YOU’VE BEEN BURGLED. Statistics in Spain

Crime rates in Spain remain among the lowest in the EU according to the latest Interior Ministry crime report. However, since the economic crisis began in 2008, there has been a steep increase in domestic burglaries and theft as a result. In 2012 the number of burglaries in homes rose by 25.4%. The message to expat residents is not to panic. There are some simple precautions to take, as you would back in the UK, such as fitting security grills, installing exterior lights and alarms, being careful about what content is posted on social networks, especially anything to do with trips and holidays away from home. It also helps to take out a quality home insurance policy that will cover your home and its contents should any unfortunate incident occur.

When you discover you’ve been burgled

As soon as you discover you’ve been burgled, whether it’s a break-in or theft at your home, first call the police. Don’t touch anything until they arrive. A police report will be needed to process your claim. Then secure your home to avoid further damage, board up any broken windows, make a list of damaged or missing belongings, detail the damage to your home resulting from the burglary, taking photographs of damaged windows or door. At this point, you can call the claims department of your home insurance company. We advise you to have your policy on hand when you call.

Peace-of-mind with Linea Directa

We understand that your peace-of-mind is important, especially in your home. Our claims department will take a full statement of the circumstances of the incident. We will check the insurance coverage with you explaining all the procedures. If emergency repairs are required from locksmiths to glaziers, we will help you swiftly handle your claim and get things back to normal as soon as possible. Fortunately, incidents of theft in Spain are relatively small compared to other EU countries, however should you be burgled, your homeowner’s insurance policy will cover the loss or destruction of personal property if it’s stolen from your home.

Hold-up outside the home

In many cases, your home insurance policy may cover you for any incidents that occur outside your home. Should you be the victim of a hold-up outside your premises your personal belongings are covered. We will ensure replacement documents are quickly and efficiently dealt with, and if required, arrange the locks on your home to be changed. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. If you would like to contact Linea Directa please call 902 123 161 More information on Linea Directa online at www.lineadirecta.com

WHAT A WASTE

"Well, here’s another fine mess you´ve got me into," was the classic line uttered by Oliver Hardy in the famous Laurel and Hardy movies and it sums up so well the end result of the antics of all the UK politicians over past months over the Scottish referendum nonsense. Personally, I think this whole affair has been a divisive, non-productive waste of money. I hate to think how much money the craziness has cost both Scotland and the rest of the UK, and I wish nationalists wherever they are, anywhere in the world...well, I don´t think I need to spell it out!! This world is divided enough, and we need mechanisms to bring us closer together, not people who want to split us up and divide us into ever smaller factions. The ridiculous end result would be for every householder to declare his/her independence and although for a split second you might think that´s great, just imagine the result! Anyway, news that Alex Salmond(pictured), the orchestrator of the independence nonsense, resigned is music to my ears. Good riddance to him and all his kind who want to split us all into some kind of modern day tribes. It’s interesting that all political parties in the UK (apart from UKIP please note) offered Pandora´s Box to the Scots to reject independence. There is no alternative for them to shower the Scots with promised goodies, and any attempt by any of the parties to try to walk away from that commitment will have severe political consequences. I´m pleased to see that Labour has shot itself in the foot well and truly,

and I´m sure will suffer greatly for it. David Cameron was quick to say that whatever powers were given to Scotland, England should have them too, and Scottish MPs would no longer have the power to vote on English only matters. Wonderful! Scottish Labour MPs will no longer be able to dictate to England, and even a Labour government could quite easily be outvoted if it tried to introduce Socialist dogma south of the border. As I said in my article last week, it will be very interesting to see through the years ahead how a Scottish Socialist dominated Scotland fares compared with a right of centre England. Interesting thought this, but I am sure those who can afford it will have one home north of the border and another in England. One to take advantage of the likely greater welfare payments

(paid for by taxes) in Socialist Scotland, and another to take advantage of better business opportunities in England! And finally, on the referendum issue, I hope people will not fall into the trap of thinking that the establishment of an English Assembly would be a good idea. It would just create another tier of bureaucracy at vast expense, paid for through increased taxation. It´s something being mooted by Labour and I hope people don´t fall for it. Sadly, soft UK judges still rule and here’s the latest example of it. A benefits cheat claimed more than £20,000 in disability allowance despite moving to the Costa del Sol ten years ago. She failed to reveal she had moved to Spain and continued to claim, despite moving into a mobile home in the sun from her original

home in Sheffield. When she first applied for benefits, she was told she had to inform the benefits office if she moved abroad. She failed to do so and told lies on her forms for continued benefits. She was given a 12-week jail

term, suspended for 18 months, and made her the subject of a curfew from 9pm to 6am every night. Big deal. Every single benefits cheat should be automatically jailed. Until that happens, people will still think it´s worth taking the risk in telling lies to get benefits and that if they are caught, they can get away with it with a soft sentence. Birmingham does not seem to be a very nice to be - whether you are a young child who wants a decent school lunch, or a motorist. How´s this for the ultimate in road rage? A woman in her 20s stopped her car in the middle of the road to allow her partner to go to a shop. When another motorist, in her 40s, asked her how long she was going to be, she

during the summer, back in the UK in our park home. It´s lovely to see green fields, woodland, deer walking over the fields which we overlook, and see all the wildlife. Not so wonderful is to see one rabbit after another dying from that wretched illness myxomatosis. Anyway we are back seeing the sad countryside in Spain, parched caused by many months of drought. Anyone who doesn´t believe that global warming exists should live in southern Spain for a few months. The weather patterns have changed and I have watched on the rainfall radar as shower cloud after shower cloud has skirted along the Mediterranean, tantilisingly close to land. And when one does manage to get across the coast-

was met with a barrage of abuse. Finally the older woman found a place to park and walked to the shops, but as she did so, the young woman stormed angrily over to her unsuspecting victim before throwing her down into a box of fruit in front of a grocery store. The aggressive assailant then held her down(pictured) and shouted at her, before pushing her hard onto the curb when she tried to escape. The woman continued to harass her 44year-old victim when she finally got to her feet. Sadly, all the people in the busy shopping street just watched and made no attempt to separate the women. I hope this woman is tracked down and does not appear before a soppy judge but one which will give her a good, stiff jail sentence. She deserves a birching. Well, we´re back in Spain after spending three months

line it quickly fizzles out. Monday´s predicted morning rainfall was a damp squib much of it passing far to the north or falling into the Med, until the evening, when we had the spectacular lightning show and torrential rain, but only for half an hour, compared with far more elsewhere. There are some weird changes in our climate. While ice around the North Pole is more than a million square kilometres below the 30-year average, ice around the South Pole is breaking all records, two million square kilometres above the 30-year average and ocean temperatures in the tropics are way above normal. This part of Spain has seen summer temperatures way above average, and if this is going to be the norm, and even get worse through the years ahead, it´s going to be torture to remain in Spain during the summer heat.

SAY IT IN SPANISH Learn the lingo - with a little help from JEANETTE ERATH Spanish 141 Welcome back to learning Spanish, I hope you are all making the most of getting out and about in this fantastic country. It´s great to go and see the culture and pass time chatting with the locals. Remember the most important thing you need to be able to speak Spanish is confidence. Once you have the words and a basic structure, the only thing stopping you from conversing with others is a lack of courage. I was certainly guilty of that when I was learning, until I eventually overcame it and just relaxed. Now I can talk to anyone regardless of who and where, so go out and show the Spanish world just how much you know. We are continuing this week with the verb ´hacer´ The next meaning/construction of the verb “hacer” is that it is used to express the time between two actions. Hace + expression time + que + a verb in the present tense = to express the time since the start of an action to the present time, and may continue in the future. (to have + participle + ing) For example: hace dos años que soy profesora de español – I have been a Spanish teacher for two years; hace un año que ella vive en esta ciudad – she has lived in this city for one year; ¿Hace cuánto tiempo que estudias tú español? – how long have you been studying Spanish?; Hace tres años que estudio español –I have been studying

Spanish for three years. Hace + expresión de tiempo + que + a verb in preterite (past) tense = expresses the time which has elapsed since the action took place. (……ago)

For example: hace dos años que yo estudié español – two years ago I studied Spanish; hace tres meses que fui a Portugal – three months ago I went to Portugal, ¿hace cuánto tiempo que estuviste en Inglaterra? – how long ago were you in England?; Hace cuatro meses que yo estuve en Inglaterra – four months ago I was in England. So you can see the differences in the tenses changes what you are saying and how important it is to not only know how

to write Spanish but also how to pronounce it. Spanish has specific sounds and once you have mastered them you can pronounce anything but the work has to go in to the pronunciation. I have some students who know what they want to say but because their pronunciation is not quite correct, I am not sure what they are trying to say. This is something very important at all levels, however as you get more fluent and speaking in different tenses it is even more important, one letter can change from present to past tense so it´s vital to get the way you speak clear now to avoid mistakes later. There really is nothing better than being able to talk to someone in Spanish without having to think about what you are going to say or about what the reply will be, to just go and speak as you do in English is what you are aiming for so get out and try it, have the self-assurance that you can do it and you will, and bit by bit you will improve until one day you are having a conversation without even thinking about it. There is a lot to learn and it can be confusing to know where to start or where to go, that´s why I´m here, to lead you through the grammar and vocabulary of Spanish, then it´s up to you to put it all together; check out all my previous lessons online, there is plenty of revision to help you along; and talking of which, next week will be another revision week, including some basic to intermediate level, so get working and revising so you´re ready for some fun next week.

OLIVE OIL RISE

Hold the bruschetta: olive oil prices are expected to rise sharply after a prolonged drought in the world's biggest producing region in southern Spain, at the same time as a blight has hit the crop in Puglia, Italy's main olive-growing area. While there is still time for rain to save the day in Andalusia, as harvesting takes place from October to January depending on the olive variety and location, without better weather soon this year's crop is predicted to be 40% down on the bumper 1.77 milliontonne harvest of 2013-14. "Not even the most optimistic are predicting a million tonnes," said David Erice of Spain's Small Farmers Union. "We're expecting something closer to 2012, when production was around 700,000 tonnes." Spain produces 50% of the world's olive oil, with 73% of that coming from the province of Andalusia in the south and 16% from Catalonia in the north-east. In 2013 olive oil exports from Andalusia were worth €1.5bn (£1.1bn).

You probably believe cholesterol is one of the biggest dangers that you face. Nothing can be further from the truth. On the contrary, cholesterol is one of the most vital nutrients your body produces. That¥s correct, your body produces far more cholesterol than you can ever consume from your diet.

Why is that? Well it¥s because cholesterol is immensely useful to your body. Over half the dry weight of your brain is cholesterol. All the nerves in your body are protected by a protective covering made from cholesterol. In addition,

cholesterol is the raw material that your body needs to produce hormones, testosterone, oestrogen, thyroxine, etc. You may also be interested to know that there is absolutely nothing like ‘good’ or ‘bad’ cholesterol. What is well known is that the damage done by lowering cholesterol far outweighs any possible gains. And it gets even worse if the drug used to lower cholesterol belongs to the statin family. Stains are extremely harmful to the

body because by lowering cholesterol in the body, they also lower one of the most important nutrient for the heart, brain, liver, kidneys and arteries called Co-enzyme Q10 or CoQ10. Quite simply, Co-enzyme Q10 or CoQ10 equates to energy. CoQ10 is the main ingredient that your cells need to produce energy. And without it, your energy levels start to go down. And of course without energy, your organs start to deteriorate. If you take statins, and you are reluctantly to give it up and try safer alternatives, then you must also take CoQ10. A newly discovered form of CoQ10, that works directly inside cells is now available to the public. It is called MitoQ. While CoQ10 remains in the blood, MitoQ is able to penetrate deeper, into the cells. That way it is able to heal directly the damage done to cells and organs. To find out more about MitoQ visit: www.mitoq.com or www.medb.es FOR A FULL BODY SCAN, CALL DR MACHI MANNU: 965071745

is that Maggie Smith hasn’t aged a day as Downton has so far taken us a dozen years forward from the very first episode, and she’s still in fine plotting. I like ITV’s Sunday night line up, with The X Factor What a cracking opener to preceding Downton, and earthe very welcome return of lier on, the return of Sunday Downton Abbey to ITV Night at the Palladium, which screens last Sunday night. ruled the roost for a dozen Is it really series five that years from the early days of we are up to? It seems like ITV. As we’ve seen in only yesterday since we Britain’s Got saw the launch of this Talent, viewblockbusting drama, and ers love variafter what I thought was a ety and the bit of a bumpy season a show works couple of years ago, really well with Downton appears now to genuine top be back on track. The draw performextended opener was ers plus novelcrammed full of a bucket ty acts like the load of stories with a real h i l a r i o u s spring in the step, plus the towel-wearing fire, which had nasty Canadian duo Thomas becoming the that we got in hero, after coming close to the first prolosing his job over his gramme. The blackmail of Baxter. What show is of course is also amazing r e c o r d e d

with ALEX TRELINSKI

these days so we do loose the edge of something going wrong; there‘s no orchestra anymore; and the audienceinvolved, “Top of the Bill” devalues the programme, but putting those points aside, it’s still an entertaining watch. It was good fun as well to see guest host Jason Manford showing off his singing prowess with BGT winner’s Collabro last Sunday. I think ITV have a success here that

could easily run for a couple of series a year. I wonder if the game is up for the BBC’s New Tricks and that’s why Dennis Waterman is quitting during the next series, leaving none of the original gang on screen? In a rarity, ITV have played a trump card by running their mini-series about the early days of Cilla Black’s career straight against on a Monday night, and they’ve won the

audience battle by a mile (something that New Tricks isn‘t used to). I’ve enjoyed Cilla and Sheridan Smith’s acting performance, and I also applaud that we’ve had actually “live” singing rather than vocals being dubbed on afterwards. I’m probably in a tiny minority here, but I don’t think that Sheridan Smith sounds anything like Cilla when singing, and surely that should be crucial? I also

think there’s been too much music and not enough drama, but I loved the settings and the style. I just wanted some more meat about it all. David Morissey popping up in a TV drama is normally the sign that you are going to get something really good, and that’s been delivered on BBC1 in a three-parter that he’s helped to produce, called The Driver. He plays a cabbie that makes a fateful decision and it’s made for a belting piece of viewing. Strictly Come Dancing bounces back with the first of the live dance shows tonight (Friday) on BBC 1, so guess what ITV have done? They’re putting on The X Factor up against this evening! It’s all rather funny as these antics are somewhat pointless, with plus-one channels, recording, and the internet. Plus you know that Strictly will get the bigger audience.

The Undriveables ITV1 - 21:00

3/6. Instructor Paul tutors 28-year-old professional matchmaker Siobhan, who must learn to improve her concentration behind the wheel. Taking her out on the roads at night seems to do the trick, but he's still concerned about her general standard of driving and has just five days to get her into shape for the test. Meanwhile, Ursula helps single father Anson, 47, who's a master on two wheels but hopeless on four. He would love to swap his motorbike for a car, but has problems mastering the clutch. Narrated by Geoffrey Palmer.

The Driver BBC1 - 22:00

2/3. The crime drama continues, as Vince realises just how far out of his depth he has gotten since agreeing to be the driver for gang leader The Horse. He nurses a guilty conscience as his thoughts turn to his involvement in the last job and so sets about trying to make things right - although little does he realise his actions are going to impact on Col. Meanwhile, Ros is becoming increasingly suspicious of what her husband is getting up to in his spare time, and it looks like Vince's two worlds may be about to collide. Feeling at a loss, he tries to piece his family back together by visiting his son Tim and making an emotional plea. David Morrissey, Claudie Blakley, Ian Hart and Lewis Rainer star.

9/10. Some great names have featured in the series so far, but their ancestors' lives haven't always been as intriguing as those of lesser celebrities who've taken part in previous runs. At least with this week's famous face - comedian and actor Billy Connolly - we're guaranteed more than our fair share of laughs, even if his family history turns out to be lacklustre. The episode starts out promisingly in the city of Billy's birth, Glasgow, where he hopes to find out more about his mother's relatives. He believes they hailed from Ireland, but records concerning his great-great-grandmother only deepen the mystery. Billy also heads to India, where he unearths details of the parts two of his ancestors played in historical events.

THE EARDRUM Written by Michael Burke RHAD MSHAA of Digital Hearing Our eardrums (tympanic membranes, to be technical) are literally what they say; they act as drumskins, which vibrate when sounds hit them, and send the sound on its way into the middle ear. The eardrum is oval in shape and about 10 mm across. It is not flat; it is concave (bends inwards) and is set at a 55-degree angle, sloping backwards at the end of the ear canal. This is the barrier that separates the outer ear from the middle ear. A healthy eardrum is mother of pearl in colour and consists of three layers of tissue – all told about 1/250th inch thick – an exceedingly delicate work of art. The role of the eardrum is to act as a transducer. It changes airborne pressure waves into physical vibrations and passes them on to the bones of the middle ear, which are attached to the ear drum on its inside. We have all heard the term ‘perforated eardrum’. This happens when this taut gossamer of skin bursts for some reason. Usually this is because of a sudden pressure change – can be in an aircraft, can be from diving, can be a blow to the ear, or even a very heavy sneeze! It can also be from a middle ear infection when a fluid build-up bursts out through the eardrum. This can result in a hole or a tear in this delicate sheet of skin; all of a sudden the drum skin loses a

lot of its vibrating power and hearing can be difficult. Most of the time (but not always) the eardrum grows back and heals itself. Even when this happens however, only the two outer layers of skin grow back; the middle layer has no blood vessels and does not regenerate, leaving a permanent weak spot. On some occasions, if middle ear pressure drops due to a blockage of the Eustachian tube, a retraction pocket may form at the weakened point which can collect dead skin cells and cause a cholesteatoma, which in the worst case can rot and attack the middle ear bones. When a perforation occurs that does not heal, this results in a reduced surface area for collecting vibrations and can reduce the efficiency of transmission due to loss of tautness. (A perforation in the wrong place can even lead to the bones of the middle ear becoming detached.) A permanent perforation can also leave a passageway open for infections to pass from the outside world into the middle ear. Look after your eardrums; they are very delicate. If you have any questions about this week's topic, you can e-mail digitalhearing@hotmail.co.uk, contact Michael Burke at Digital Hearing, Quesada Business Centre, Calle los Arcos 7, Ciudad Quesada – Tel 698 418 642, or visit us on-line at www.digitalhearingspain.com.

HEAL YOUR BODY FROM THE INSIDE OUT WITH MITOQ

Just like a car needs to generate energy from fuel, before it can move from one place to another, our cells also need to generate energy to keep the body active and in motion. Co-enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is the most vital ingredient required by every cell in the body to produce energy. Quite simply, CoQ10 equates to energy. And without it, our cells are unable to produce energy, our organs start to break-down and diseases set-in. MitoQ is a newly released ultra-enhanced form of CoQ10 that is over 800 times more powerful than current formulas, and most importantly, capable of delivering CoQ10 directly into the mitochondria – the power house of cells, where energy is generated. The mitochondria are tiny organs that float inside every cell in the body, and they are ultimately responsible for the generation of energy. Mitochondria can be likened to a generator that supplies power to a factory. Without power very little can be done in the factory. Our cells are like factories, and the mitochondria located inside cells are like generators. And just as generators need fuel to produce energy, mitochondria also requires fuel in the form of CoQ10 in order to produce energy. Mitochondria are predominantly found in the active cells of the body such as the heart, kidney, liver and skin: the reason why these organs require huge amounts of CoQ10 in order to function properly. Apart from generating energy, another vital role of CoQ10 is as a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants are highly beneficial compounds in the body that destroy toxic chemicals called free radicals. These free radicals are produced inside the mitochondria while energy is being generated. Free radicals are also produced by environmental toxins from toxic chemicals, pesticides,

solvents, plastics etc. Free radicals have been linked to many chronic diseases such as Atherosclerosis, Diabetes, Cardiovascular disease, autoimmune diseases, as well as neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer´s and Parkinson´s disease. The body usually has enough CoQ10 to neutralize these free radicals until about the age of 30 when supplies start to run low. By age 50 we have half the amount of CoQ10 we have in our mid 20s. This fall in CoQ10 levels has been identified as the major cause of ageing and degenerative diseases. Low levels of CoQ10 means that toxic free radicals will start to accumulate in mitochondria, leading to their damage and dysfunction. To add to this, as mitochondria is able to replicate itself, this means that damaged mitochondria will further reproduce damaged mitochondria, causing even more stress to the cells. Eventually the cells start to die, the organs start to pack-up and the body becomes diseased. Researchers have linked up to 200 chronic diseases to poorly functioning Mitochondria. These include; heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, Alzheimer´s and numerous autoimmune disorders.

MITOQ TO THE RESCUE

When CoQ10 was first produced in 1957, it was considered a remarkable achievement in the scientific community, and many researchers believed it marked a turning point in our fight against diseases as well as the ageing process. But it was soon realised that CoQ10 was poorly absorbed into the body, and unable to reach the cells, where it belonged. Nevertheless this did not stop manufacturers from making it available to the public as the supplement from the mid.1970s.

10 years ago, Dr Smith and Dr Rob, both Cambridge graduate researchers took it upon themselves to create the most absorbable form of CoQ10, one able to travel deep into the mitochondria of cells, where energy is generated. Their effort paid off. They found a way to add a charge to the CoQ10 molecule, and by doing so, were able to convert it into a highly absorbable form. Their discovery called MitoQ, was found to be able to carry the CoQ10 molecule deep into the mitochondria where it is then released to charge the cells – making MitoQ over 800 times more powerful than other CoQ10 supplement ever produced. MitoQ has been clinically tested by many top research labs all over the world, and has been found to be very safe – without side effects – as well as effective for treating a wide range of chronic diseases.

WHO NEEDS COQ10

Anyone suffering from any form of cardiovascular disease – High blood pressure, Irregular heart-beats, Heart failure, Angina will benefit immensely from MitoQ. By flooding the body with CoQ10, MitoQ dramatically improves the performance of the heart. Anyone taking statin drugs to lower cholesterol must take MitoQ. Statins block the enzyme that produces cholesterol in the body, the enzyme that is also necessary to produce CoQ10. Those suffering from neurological diseases such as Alzheimer´s, Parkinson´s and memory loss will also benefit from MitoQ. MitoQ is available as capsules and also as an antiageing serum. To find out more about MitoQ, visit www.medb.es or www.mitoq.com. You an also call MedB Diagnostics on 965 071 745.

METHOD

Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/gas 4. Choose a flameproof casserole dish or a wide, ovenproof pan that will hold all the chicken pieces snugly but comfortably. Put the casserole on a medium-low heat. Add the oil, then the onion and Leaves from 2 sprigs of rosemary cook, stirring regularly, for six to eight 200g red lentils, well rinsed minutes until it begins to soften. Add the 500ml chicken or veg stock garlic, rosemary and some salt and pep8 skin-on, bone-in, free-range chicken per. Cook gently for a further five minthighs, or 1 medium chicken (about utes, then stir in the lentils and stock. 1.75kg/4lb), jointed into 6-8 pieces Season the chicken thighs and place Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper skin-side up in the casserole. You want Flat-leaf parsley, chopped, to finish

31

most of the chicken skin to remain exposed above the liquid in the dish so it can brown in the oven. Bring to a simmer on the hob, then transfer to the oven and bake, uncovered, for one hour. Check that the chicken is cooked right through and the lentils are soft. If not, return to the oven for 10-15 minutes and test again. Skim off any excess fat from the surface. Taste the lentilly liquor and add more salt or pepper if needed. Serve, scattered with chopped parsley, just as it is or with steamed broccoli or spring greens on the side.

Horoscopes Aries March 21 - April 19 A chance to branch out in a new direction could come your way this week. Accept change and do not let your doubts about the future of a certain situation hold you back. The Libran New Moon in the area of your skies that rules your love life also marks the start of an annual cycle. Put your own interests first this time around.

Taurus April 20 - May 20 Pluto, the planet of far-reaching change, begins to travel forwards through the skies this week, and you can at last begin to make progress with an old ambition you were forced to shelve. You can also make a loved one see a certain situation from your angle if you play your hand with care. A few well-chosen words could well be all it takes.

Gemini May 21 - June 20 Something you discover from a new friend or an unexpected ally could give you the advantage in a situation that has held you back. With the New Moon in your chart’s zone of adventure, you can now cut loose from restrictions, so ignore advice from friends and follow your own star. A more upbeat and constructive phase is beginning.

Cancer June 21 - July 22 The annual New Moon in your chart’s domestic zone marks the start of a new chapter, so reorganise your life to give yourself more freedom to manoeuvre and draw up constructive plans. This is also the right time to stand back and reassess your position in a close alliance. Far-reaching changes could be on the horizon.

By Pandora Leo July 23 - August 22 Lucky, optimistic Jupiter gives you the confidence and flair to reach a cherished goal this week. Being in the right place at the right time is the key to getting what you want this time around, so put unnecessary chores on hold and focus on the details of your plan. The New Moon in diplomatic Libra helps you put your point of view across to those who count.

Virgo August 23 - September 22 Resist the urge to spell out where you stand or put someone under pressure. Monday’s clash between outspoken Mars and elusive Neptune suggests that you could overplay your hand, so bide your time and let a certain situation be. What comes to light later in the week could transform your outlook and your prospects of success.

Libra September 23 - October 22 With the Sun and the New Moon in Libra, a new cycle is beginning, so take stock of what you have achieved and work out where you want to go from here. Events linked to a new friendship could also make you see your options from a different perspective. Do nothing until you are sure you have all the facts.

Scorpio October 23 - November 21 With the Sun and the New Moon in Libra, a new cycle is beginning, so take stock of what you have achieved and work out where you want to go from here. Events linked to a new friendship could also make you see your options from a different perspective. Do nothing until you are sure you have all the facts.

Sagittarius November 22 - December 21 Do not try to push through changes that you feel are overdue this week. People you spend time with could make you see your situation in a new light, so be open to advice and ready to change course. Your social life also enters a new phase. Do not let existing ties limit your horizons, or allow others to make decisions for you.

RICHARD CAVENDER

Bluemoon Solutions www.bluemoonsolutions.es

BlueMoon Solutions is the computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca, they provide quality computer services at realistic prices and specialise in working with home users and small businesses.

Richard moved to Spain eight years ago having left his management background behind in the UK and decided to use his IT skills to help home users and small businesses with their PC problems. Now a relaxed 'computer man' he is out and about in the Spanish sun every day, making house and shop calls and using his vast experience and qualifications to (usually) sort out the problem there and then. Computers are his hobby as well as his work so don’t be surprised to get an answer to your email in the early hours!

ADVICE: Joe was having problems connecting to his new ADVICE: Marian wanted to know how to add gadgets to wireless Internet connection her Windows 7 computer

Q

Q

Hi Richard, our internet was re-set by the Provider and now laptop won't lock on to it. It says "settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network". The iPad attaches ok and it shows other networks that are close by, but my network shows a big red X. please?

A

Hi Joe, you need to remove the old wireless connection, you can do this by doing the following...

1. Right hand click the network icon in the bottom right hand corner of the screen (this looks like a wifi signal). 2. Click Open Network and Sharing Centre 3. Click 'Manage Wireless Networks' in the left hand panel 4. Click the wireless network you wish to remove, then click 'Remove' 5. Now close the windows and try to connect again to the wireless network, this time it should ask you for the new password.

Don’t forget you can follow me on twitter @bluemoonspain Alternately why don’t you sign up for my newsletter. You can do this by going to:www.bluemoonsolutions.es and fill in the form thats on any page except the front page.

Hi Richard, when you delivered and set up our computer, we enjoyed the information strip in the top right corner, displaying clock, exchange rate and 3 day weather forecast for Santa Pola. When making Google our home page we lost that information. Could you assist us via Email with instructions on how to reinstate it Marian

A

Hi Marian, it looks like you have deleted the Windows 7 gadgets, to get them back just right hand click anywhere on the desktop and click “gadgets”, you will be shown a number of gadgets, and you can just drag them and drop them onto the desktop where you want them.

ADVICE: Tracy was having problems with Internet Explorer after she had a play around in the settings!

Q

Hi Richard, on my computer some things started not to work, i.e. on Facebook could not view or "like" items. I looked an answer up on the Internet and they said to go to Internet options on control panel, then security, click trusted sites and custom level and under settings change some to enable/disable. I did this but, now have made my computer worse! It works but is very, very slow. Takes at least 4 mins for a page to come up. Hope you can help me, I should have left things alone! Thanks Tracy.

A

Hi Tracy, sorry for the delay in getting back to you, it’s been a bit manic here!

It sounds like what you need to do is reset Internet Explorer (if that’s what you are using, unfortunately you don’t say?), in order to do this just follow these steps… 1. Click start, control panel 2. Double click on the Internet Options icon 3. Click advanced 4. Under Reset Internet Explorer settings, click Reset. Then click Reset again 5. When complete, click close 6. try Internet Explorer again …that should help sort it out.

Mercedes Reveals Hybrid Future Mercedes will launch 10 petrol-electric plug-in hybrid models by 2017, with the aim of creating a line-up of low-emissions cars distinct from its core product range, in much the same way it has achieved with AMG and high performance models. In addition, it has hinted that it could build a hybrid hypercar to rival the McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder, The strategy is in response to increasingly stringent emissions targets, particularly in the EU. Mercedes alone has cut its fleet average CO2 figure from 230g/km in 1995 to the current 134g/km. By 2016, it says, this will be 125g/km, and by 2020 just 99g/km. It will do this primarily by using its plug-in Modular Hybrid Technology, which packages the electric motor in the car's gearbox, the batteries in the boot and a petrol engine (rather than diesel, due to demand in China and the US) under the bonnet. This formula can be applied to any of its rear-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive models, so expect plugin hybrid versions of the GL-class SUV, Eclass saloon and estate and CLS among

others. The first model to use the plug-in hybrid technology is the S500 luxury car, which is on sale now and pairs the electric running gear with a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged petrol engine. This setup results in an electric-only range of 21 miles, helping the S500 Plug-in Hybrid achieve CO2 emissions of just

TAX CHANGES TO AFFECT CAR VALUES From October onwards, the paper tax disc is to be replaced by an electronic equivalent. The aim is to abolish administration and cut costs by putting the process online. It sounds sensible, simple and straightforward. But as with most things to do with the DVLA, the reality is very different. The outgoing paper tax disc moves with the vehicle. The new electronic Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) will be non-transferable; it will “belong” to the vehicle’s owner. When a car is sold,

it will no longer be taxed and the previous owner will get a refund. The new owner will thus have to ensure the car is taxed before driving it. This is where things get tricky. If a dealer doesn’t have trade plates, if he wants people to test a car he’ll have to tax it. As the new tax system is linked to the V5C log book, he’ll show up as an owner. Philip Nothard, consumer expert for CAP Automotive, said that the trade is worried about other things, too. “Currently, if a

dealer buys a group M (255g/km of CO2-plus) car, having the £500 annual tax built into the sticker price makes that car easier to sell.” The implication is this will have an instant – and undesirable – effect on the value of high-CO2 vehicles. Then there’s the issue of the remaining tax. Let’s assume Mr Dealer taxes a car for 12 months at the start of November. I then buy that car on November 25. My road tax will start from the beginning of the month so I’ll have to pay for 12 months but will only get 11 months and a few days’ worth of tax. The dealer, meanwhile, only gets a refund for 11 months. So the DVLA is being paid twice. Another question mark covers all the cars sitting on dealer forecourts with valid tax stretching into next year. Nothard asks: “As these cars are ‘in trade’ and have no current owners, who does the rebate go to? The dealer or the previous owner?” According to the DVLA, if you don’t apply for a refund, that tax will be lost because any new owner will have to retax the car. The message is: if you’re selling a car, make sure you take the old tax disc with you. The DVLA claims the new system will save government about £3 million and business £7 million a year in admin fees. Yet it appears to make buying and selling a car more costly and inconvenient. Drivers will be able to buy road tax on a monthly basis for a five per cent surcharge, the DVLA counters, but that’s without the potential aggravation and extra cost it’s introducing to the process.

65g/km in EU tests, as well as 101mpg on the Combined cycle. Its battery takes two hours to charge using a dedicated Mercedes wall box or four hours from a domestic plug socket. The S500 will be followed early next year by a C-class Plug-in Hybrid that marries the electric motor and batteries with a smaller four-cylinder petrol engine, and is likely to produce CO2 emissions of less than 50g/km. Mercedes also hinted that AMG could use the plug-in hybrid technology with a V8 engine to create a rival for the McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder. "If you look at the supercars that are coming out now, most of them are already hybrid, so I wouldn't exclude that from the calculation," said Johannes Reifenrath, Head of Mercedes Product Strategy and Planning. WIRELESS FUTURE It’s not just the cars themselves that Mercedes is developing, but how people will charge them; in addition to being committed to build-

ing fuel-cell infrastructure, the German company is working with rival manufacturers, including BMW, to develop a universal wireless charging pad for battery-electric models. "It's a very simple device. Just park the car - or let it park automatically in the future - and it will start charging, explained Reifenrath. "I can imagine in a couple of years you will find these charging stations at cinemas, at supermarkets, at train stations," he added. The wireless charging technology will first be used on the flagship S500 Plug-in Hybrid, before being rolled out to other vehicles. Diesel plug-in hybrid models, as well as those using Mercedes’s new nine-speed automatic gearhox are also on the cards as Mercedes works towards the long-term goal of an all-electric range that produces zero local emissions using battery or fuel-cell technology.

Greenside Gossip RYDER CUP FEAST AWAITS IVIE DAVIES takes a weekly look at the golf scene - golfdavies@gmail.com

All the talking is over and the players from Europe and the United States get going this Friday morning(September 26th) at Gleneagles in the bi-annual Ryder Cup contest that I’m sure will bring us a full range of range of thrills and spills. But building a winning Ryder Cup team, and hosting a successful event, involves more people than just the players. Many others provide the insight and expertise that create the conditions for success. So, as we look forward to the 2014 Ryder Cup, let’s meet some members of this “Team behind the team”. We find out how they are contributing to Europe’s bid for victory and to the organization of an event that will capture the attention of sports fans around the world. SETTING THE RYDER CUP STAGE Scott Fenwick is Golf Courses and Estate Manager at Gleneagles. He arranged for an architect on site to look at redesigning some of the holes, to bring them more into line with modern-day golf and worked with that architect for five years or so, The biggest, most dramatic, of his proposals were the changes to hole number 18. As it was, the par 5, 18th didn’t offer any real strategic options. You simply teed off, laid up with your second shot and then it became a pitching competition. Jack Nicklaus, the course designer, wanted to make a dramatic change to 18, to make it more of a challenge. So they all agreed. It was left it as a par five, but was totally changed to how the hole plays. They moved the tees forward 20 metres and raised them by 2.5 metres, which created an elevated platform from which to play

and turned it 90 degrees across the hole, so it now plays up and down the hole. A bunker was added at the right side of the landing zone, to define the turn of the hole. If you hit the right shot, you would carry over it and land in the perfect spot on the fairway. From the landing zone toward the green, they dug the fairway out five metres, shifting 50,000 tons of soil. We put it all down the left-hand side to increase the spectator mounding. It’s on a little plateau now, with big swales off to the left and right, and it’s heavily bunkered. The effect of all this is to give the player the option of attempting to reach the green in two. But, unless you hit the perfect second shot into the green, you catch the swales and bunkers on either side. Dropping the fairway down and building up mounds to the side has created a big amphitheatre around the hole. The players are quite low down. And, in contrast, once all the grandstands are set up, there will be even more height for the spectators. There should be quite some atmosphere when the players come up the 18th

RYDER CUP RULES OF ENGAGEMENT David Garland is Director of Tour Operations at the PGA European Tour. A captains’ agreement sets the rules and regulations under which the match is played. It is a public document that both captains sign. It establishes the order of play on the Friday and Saturday mornings – it’s the home captain’s choice whether it shall be fourballs or foursomes first. The agreement sets guidelines on issues such as what happens if a player is late on the tee, when the players can practice on the golf course, the pace of play and how they deal with bad weather. The first draft is drawn up by Ryder Cup Europe and the PGA of America early in the year of the match. There’s a lot of dialog so they are sure what each is proposing. Once he has agreement, its then passed on to the captains. If they’re unhappy with anything, or they want to change something, its debated – and eventually they reach a document that both captains agree to and sign. Each venue in recent years in Europe has hosted a big tournament in the

years running up to The Ryder Cup – like the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles. These tournaments assist

greatly in setting up the golf course for The Ryder Cup as thay have had many years’ experience from these tournaments. Paul McGinley, likes the normal European Tour set-up, that guys play, week in, week out. And he understands that you can try to second guess yourself and make things too complicated when it comes to setting up the course. Ultimately, the best

KNOW YOUR RULES QUESTION A player’s ball is lying on a slope in play. When he addresses the ball it moves and comes to rest out of bounds. What is the ruling? A: The player’s ball is out of bounds and therefore he must proceed under Rule 27.1 B: The player incurs no penalty. C: The player incurs a one stroke penalty and must replace the ball. ANSWER C: Rule 18-b. The player incurs a one stroke penalty and must replace the ball.

players are going to win on the day – those who hole the putts and play the best. There’s very little between the teams, as we’ve seen in the results of the last few years. SERVING THE RYDER CUP TEAM – AND THE INDIVIDUAL Andrew Grimstone is Managing Director of Level 4 Golf Ltd. Level 4 provides licensed Ryder Cup merchandise and supplies the European team with their golf bags. Andrew worked with Europe’s Captain Paul McGinley since 2013 to design the bags for 2014. Level 4 Golf has been involved with The Ryder Cup since 1997. As well as the bags, they make the matching club head covers, umbrellas, towels and headwear for the players, the caddies and the official party. And they do a range of accessories for the players, such as pitchforks, ball markers, tees, pencils, anything that they need in the club room. In general, golfers don't tend to have any real influence over golf bags. It's the caddy who looks after them, and they're given a bag by their hardware sponsor. They don't have any great experience or expertise on what's going to be best. For example, there's a very good

chance that it's going to be damp at Gleneagles, like it was at Celtic Manor, so they're going for a bag that's sturdy and will keep the water out. Whereas at Valhalla, in 2008, there was a good chance that it’s was going to get good weather, so we had a lightweight nylon bag. The biggest challenge is the fact that there are 12 golfers in the team – and all of them are different. They have their own views about what hats they like to wear, what they don't like to wear, what a golf bag should and shouldn't do. So for Level 4 Golf to get accessories that satisfy everybody is a major challenge. But they try to do listen to everything that they hear. For example, they do six different fits of headwear for the team members. And need to cater to every player's personal style and preference. So you may all see them wearing what appear to be the same white hats, but they will all be different fits. Now when you are watching the Ryder Cup with the remote in one hand (for the first time in two years) and a glass of beer in the other or made the sandwich prepared earlier by the good lady, you will have an insight to just a few things that will have an influence on that Europe win!

TITTER ON THE TEE A senior couple are playing in the Annual Husband and Wife Club Championship. They are playing in a play-off hole and it is down to a 6 inch putt that his wife has to make to win. She takes her stance and her husband can see her trembling, she putts and misses, they lose the match. On the way home in the car, her husband is fuming, “I can’t believe you missed that putt! It was no longer than my ‘willy’. The wife looked across to her husband and smiled and said, “Yes, but it was much harder!”

Cristiano Ronaldo's hat-trick and Gareth Bale's brace helped Real Madrid thrash Deportivo La Coruna last Saturday, as they brushed aside some recent poor La Liga performances. Ronaldo struck on either side of a stunning goal from James Rodriguez(pictured) to put Real 3-0 up half-time. Haris Medunjanin scored a penalty for Deportivo six minutes into the second half before Bale scored twice. Ronaldo then completed his hat-trick, and there was still time for Deportivo's Jose Verdu Toche to score before Javier Hernandez's late double.

Elche threw away their impressive unbeaten home record for 2014 by losing to La Liga newboys Eibar last Friday night. Prior to the defeat, the hosts had not tasted defeat at the Estadio Martinez Valero in all competitions since December last year. However, first-half goals from Dani Garcia(pictured) and Raul Albentosa brought about an end to that run as an efficient-looking Eibar side picked up their second win since returning to the top flight. Elche manager, Fran Escriba admitted that his team were poor in the first half where all the damage was done. "The early goal hurt us, and we didn't get into our stride, with everybody really to blame. We improved in the second half, but it wasn't enough to get anything out of the night".

BIG BULLIES!

Are Those Rough Boys Ruining Our Beautiful Game? Do you know someone who’s being bullied? It’s not nice, is it, how those people bigger and stronger than you push you around, stop you doing what you want to – or should be doing. They don’t care if they upset or hurt you - and of course, that’s why they do it, the beastly bullies… Actually, ‘bullying’ is the new in-word used in football reporting, doncha’ know. Honest, it’s official football claptrap – sorry, I mean informed soccer reporting, like ’over the moon’. On Sunday night MOTD 2, Danny Murphy and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink were analysing away, referring to how Vincent Kompany had ‘bullied’ Diego Costa all afternoon - if that’s possible given Costa’s size and aggression. Last week I was poring over The Sunday Times, like you do if you’ve got a spare three days, when I came across ‘Villa stun p o o r

Liverpool’ in the sports section. Clever double meaning of ‘poor’, eh? It mentioned Liverpool’s risky new acquisition Mario Balotelli struggling badly to make his home debut a memorable one. ‘How do you solve a problem like Mario?’, ho-ho, was wittily worked in, but the gist of the report said that the Italian had a hard time at the hands of the robust Villa defence. Journalistically I admired the ‘Outmuscled by (Philippe) Senderos all evening, Balotelli was soon swapped for the more prosaic, but less bullyable Rickie Lambert.’ ‘Bullyable’ used there to indicate you don’t push that big Scouser Rickie about, whereas if you’re a big, shaven headed bruiser like Senderos you can take liberties with the more ‘delicate’ Italian, Balotelli. So who are the worst playground bullies all the experts are talking about? If you wanted to be unkind you could say champions Manchester City masquerade as a bunch of bul-

lying thugs, dressed up as highly talented footballers: just lining up against them is intimidating. Pablo Zabaleta, Aleksander Kolarov, Fernandino, Martin Demichelis, Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure, new boy Mangala , James Milner, and Edin Dzeko are all big beggars you might cross the road to avoid on a dark night. Captain Kompany himself is a colossus, ask Costa! But for all that muscle, City’s strength is compounded with their astonishing speed, with flyers like Jesus Navas and Sergio Aguero, and artistry from the likes of David Silva, all adding up to one formidable side. Yet for all that, City currently sit five points behind runaway leaders Chelsea, who have tough players themselves like John Terry, Branislav Ivanovic, Ramires, and now deadly Diego Costa up front - but these Blues don’t exude such raw power as today’s City. Let’s face it, all the great teams of the past had their ‘hard men’. In the great sixties and seventies Man United’s Matt Busby (and Alf Ramsey) had Nobby Stiles, Don Revie had half the Leeds team, Spurs had Dave M a c k a y, Arsenal Peter Storey, a n d Bill Shankly’s Liverpool – well, they had Tommy Smith, Emlyn Hughes and a few more. More recently, the great Alex Ferguson had ‘tough guys’ in spades, with the likes of Paul Scholes and Roy Keane to intimidate the opposition. So just where do you draw the line between ‘bullying’ and ‘hard’ - or are they just the same bedfellows with differently fashionable names? Finally, in the week we remembered 10 years ago the sad, too-early death of the great Brian Clough, as a lifetime Nottingham Forest supporter, here’s my take. Firstly at Derby, Cloughie (and Peter Taylor, no Forest and Derby stories are complete without him) had ‘ball-winning’ Archie Gemmill, and a somewhat slower, but shrewder Dave Mackay. Later in that fantastic Forest European Cup-winning team of the late seventies (we won it twice, back to back, the only team ever to do that…) we had Kenny Burns, John McGovern – oh, and Archie Gemmill… It’s always necessary to get the ball back somehow, then you can play your brand of football. In the eighties, opposing right wingers

used to stray as far away as they dared from ‘Psycho’ Stuart Pearce, strangely enough today the boss at the City Ground (did I mention we’re top of The Championship?). But there’s the classic BC story that one day Forest’s educated Dutch midfielder Johnny Metgod left his foot in and raked Peter Beardsley’s shins. In real, honest management style Cloughie immediately hauled off Metgod, and made him apologise to Beardsley afterwards. Can you imagine one of today’s topflight managers doing that with one his precious darlings? Most would say, Wengerstyle that they missed seeing the incident, when curiously they always ‘managed’ to see and complain accordingly about everything else. Referees loved to oversee Forests’ matches, as Clough’s boys never game them any trouble. Here’s a thought: why do you never, ever hear of any of Cloughie’s old players say anything bad about the man? Because he was a true man manager, he knew his players, and how to get the best out of them – with firm and friendly discipline – no bullying there. But then Cloughie was unique - a one-off. RIP, Brian.

LAST GASP RAFA MONTE FIGHT BACK VILLARREAL C 1

Rafa Gomez demonstrated his quality with two exquisite goals - plus crashed a free kick against the underside of the bar - in Villareal on Sunday. Torry came back from the dead, down and almost out at half time, to win 2-1 with the last real kick of the game. Villareal gave Torry a footballing lesson in that first period, but manager Galiana brought on Steve and Cristian at the start of the second half and they rose to the challenge. A disgusting off the ball punch in the face on Steve saw Ferreres dismissed and Torry awarded a penalty. This was pure thuggery and hopefully nothing else. The ridiculous player protests and intimidation of the officials was equally as despicable, delaying the

CD TORREVIEJA 2

taking of the spot kick. Rafa cared not a jot, sending the keeper the wrong way as he buried it low into the corner of the net. His reading of the game allowed him to side foot volley a 94th minute winner into an open goal after Villareal had baffled themselves with panic. Torry host Orihuela on Sunday with a 6pm kick off at the Vicente Garcia in a derby match that always has an extra bite. This summer, Micro and Dani Meseguer signed for Orihuela after both were offered renewed contracts with Torry. It promises to be tasty. The club will have their new strip for sale at 25 Euros and this match is a Dia del Club, with season tickets suspended and everyone paying at the gate.

CREVILLENTE 2

Montesinos kicked off their new season last weekend with an impressive win against a side new to their division, but they had to fight from being two-nil down. It was far from a perfect start as after only 10 minutes, a Lopez clearance hit his own defender to give the home side the first goal. The opening strike woke Monte up and they continued to hammer the Crevillente goal but only poor finishing and bad luck kept the score one-nil at halftime. Things got worse for Monte early in the second half, as Crevillente doubled their lead after some slack defending. Then things started to change with Edu coming on for Dimitry, and the visitors putting on more pressure, plus the bonus of

CD MONTESINOS 5

Crevillente getting a player sent off for a head butt on Omar. The goals started to flow with a Marcos screamer leading the way, followed by strikes from Ruben(penalty), Alberto, and two from Carlos to see Montesinos safely home for a comprehensive victory. Monte entertain La Murada this Sunday(September 28th) with a 5.30pm kick-off.

LAMPS LIGHTS UP EVERYONE! But Frank’s ‘My Way’ Could Haunt Chelsea…

Wouldn’t it be hugely ironic if, like last season, Chelsea faded away at the end, and Man City came storming through to snatch the title from the Londoners - by one point? Yet another, but amazing episode of the long-running football soap opera ‘You Couldn’t Make It Up’ happened at The Etihad on Sunday afternoon. After 13 faithful years at Stamford Bridge, stalwart icon and crowd favourite Frank Lampard was recently transferred to a New York team that have legal links with Man City. Unlike Sinatra, this Frank can have few regrets with Chelsea, but sadly didn’t get the chance to say goodbye to his adoring Stamford Bridge fans but suddenly by the huge quirk that is football, ‘Lamps’ found himself on the subs bench for City, against – why, only his old club, league leaders Chelsea in a significant, early season Clash of the Titans. Bitterly fought out and scoreless, with 20 minutes left, City dramatically went down to ten men as Pablo Zabaleta was sent off. Their fate looked sealed with a late goal from Chelsea substitute Shurrle but these big-hearted Blues never know when they’re beaten, they’ve proved it before to steal Championships. In a ‘seen it all now’ finish, on came Frankie, soon scoring the dramatic equaliser and nearly winning the game moments later. Sensibly, and somewhat sadly Lampard(double-scorer against hapless Wednesday this week in the Capital One Cup) did not euphorically celebrate his goal as did his jubilant teammates: the 1 – 1 result just perhaps being hugely important by the end of the season. After the final whistle, Frankie walked solemnly towards the Chelsea fans and finally was able to show his goodbyes in the

most civilised and emotional way, amazingly with both sets of supporters applauding generously - but for different reasons. Next episode? Pellegrini said on Wednesday night that Frank’s loan could be extended. Hey, that ‘King Power’ is strong stuff, it undid United: Leicester City 5 Manchester United 3 was an astounding result, what a game. Scenario: Louis van Gaal’s office Monday morning, with assistant manager Ryan Giggs: LVG: I do not understand, Roy. What went wrong? RG: It’s Ryan, boss. They scored five but we only scored three LVG: I know that! Do you think I am stupid? My Holland came third in the World Cup, you know! We were winning 3 – 1 with only 30 minutes left, Falcao, Di Maria, Herrera, all my expensive new boys played well…. and we beat that PQR last week. I know they were, how you say - ‘crack’. But now we lose 5 – 3! Did you read my match notes I made, Royan? RG: You mean Rangers were ‘crap’ - and it’s Ryan, boss… Erm, yes, but the notes’re all double Dutch to me LVG: Double Dutch? Is zat a joke - like ‘Double Glazers’? What do we need , Rayon? RG: Ryan. A new defence, boss? LVG: Yes, Rayan. Good, you are learning from my teaching. Rafael stupidly gave away the first penalty: Jones and now Evans are injured, Blackett was sent off, and Rojo may soon be doing his neighbourly community service in Argentina. Is that Shaw fit yet? RG: He says he’s getting woodworm sitting on the bench, bossLVG: Woodworm? I thought he was the moneyman the one who tells those Double -Glazers which players we need to buy? RG: That’s ‘Woodward’, boss. LVG: Well tell Wood-whoever, Louis says we need to buy a new defence, just to be Shaw. Hey, zat is your

Welish joke - to be Shaw? RG: That’s Irish, boss – I’m Welsh… LVG: Iris, Weles, Scotties, Inglis – you are all ze same to me. Who are we playing next? RG: West Ham, boss – and they beat Liverpool 3 - 1 on Saturday. LVG: Liverpool? Tell Woodworm to buy some defenders quickly, Ray – good, expensive ones though – no crack… Yes, the Red Devils are still in trouble, their soft centre brutally exposed by an irresistible Leicester side with their noisy jubilant fans – and tails-up West Ham are on their way to Old Trafford. Samsammers did for Liverpool like Aston Villa the week before, that’s two defeats on the spin now for Brendan’s boys. What’s going wrong? Balotelli’s ploughing a lone, lonely, losing furrow up front (N.B see ‘Bullying’ overleaf). Remember recently when Suarez, Sturridge and Sterling were terrifying the opposition? Anfield Saturday early doors sees the Merseyside Derby, Everton no doubt smarting from losing 3 – 2 at home to reviving, revving-up Crystal Palace. Stop progress, stop press: Grey Beards scratched in virussed-Villa Park! The runaway Aston Villa bandwagon hit the skids 3 – 0 at home to Arsenal amid sickness rumours. The facially-hirsuted management team of Paul Lambert and Roy Keane were a study of grey concern watching a combo of Welbeck/Ozil, Ozil/Welbeck, and someone called O.G. Cissokho hitting three goals in three thrilling minutes – if you’re a Gooner. Sort it sharpish, greybeards, it’s Stamford Bridge Saturday. Later, nearby Arsenal fight it out with Spurs for North London bragging rights. And now you’re gonna believe us… Wanyama hurt Swansea with the only goal to win the key battle to leave Southampton an unbelievable second after five games. Sanctified flash in the Prem pan, or the real deal? Quite Poor Rangers coming Saturday should streamline Saints success…
