SUPERMARKET SWEEP

BY ALEX TRELINSKI

T

he Alcampo supermarket chain has been declared as the cheapest across 16 Spanish cities in a nationwide supermarket price survey conducted by Spain’s equivalent of the UK Consumers Association, the OCU (Organización de Consumidores y Usuarios). Alcampo was followed by Sabeco in six cities, with the Valencian-based Mercadona group in third, having the

A

cheapest prices in three of the cities surveyed. The Andalucian-based Dani chain was viewed as offering the best value across the whole of the country. The OCU survey looked at more than 87,000 prices in 762 establishments in 54 different cities and on-line supermarkets. It recommends that customers ought to go for a supermarket that offers consistently good

value, rather than be tempted by special bargains in more expensive chains. The OCU also discovered, perhaps somewhat unsurprisingly under recent economic circumstances, that shoppers are increasingly buying the cheapest version of a product, irrespective of what the brand might be. Taking the whole of urban and rural Spain together, the OCU discovered that the cheapest supermarket chain in Spain was the Andalucianbased Dani store, based on a typical weekly shop which took in 132 name-brand products. Nationally, Dani was followed by Cemar, Herbu’s, Simply Market and then Alcampo. Eroski, who have now largely retrenched to their base of northern Spain, and Carrefour, were

also found to be among the cheapest supermarkets. Sánchez Romero (in the Madrid area) was found to be the most expensive supermarket (46 percent more than Dani), followed by Ercoreca (32 percent more expensive than Dani) and El Corte Inglés (27 percent more expensive). The Costa Blanca and the Murcia Region come out as being in the mid-range of the survey, with coastal cities in northern Spain coming out as the most expensive. According to the OCU, an average household spends 4,683 euros a year on food and that savings of up to 1,500 euros a year could be achieved by shopping around, especially in costly cities like Madrid and Barcelona.

HOMEWARD BOUND

British man wanted on charges of sexually abusing children in the UK has been picked up by the National Police on a European Arrest warrant in Alicante Province. The location of the arrest and the man's identity were not revealed by the National Police, with authorities saying that he was wanted by a

court in Newcastle upon Tyne over eight counts of assault stretching back to 1994 and 1995. Authorities say the man befriended the victim’s father to approach the minor, who he repeatedly abused at his home between October 1994 and the spring of 1995. Officials added the suspect abused

another boy during those years, a friend of the victim. The suspect lured the second boy into his home with promises of alcohol and tobacco. The man was detained last week, with Spanish authorities saying that he faces up to 10 years in jail if found guilty, once he is extradited back to Britain.

Elche's council wants safety improvements on the 15 kilometre stretch of the AP-7 motorway that passes through their area. The council has written to the DGT traffic authority in Madrid to ask for improvements to the

highway, which saw four people killed in a crash last month after a lorry crossed over the central reservation. Councillors say that the stretch has seen 53 accidents over the last decade with 17 fatalities.

200 litres of milk have been donated to the Torrevieja-based homeless charity, Reach Out, thanks to money raised by last weekend's inaugural City of Torrevieja darts tournament. Over 60 players registered for the tournament at the Nueva Torrevieja Bar on Calle Bella Antonia, with their fees going straight to

Reach Out. Torrevieja's social welfare councillor, África Celdrán (pictured), along with bar manager Jacinto Ares Rodríguez, presented the milk on Tuesday to Reach Out president, Barbara Williams. Celdrán praised the work of the charity, which helps to feed around 40 homeless people every day.

reach a plea bargain deal with prosecutors. The defence wanted a 20 year prison sentence for the three main suspects, while the prosecutors were after 50 years for murder. Dutch volleyball star Visser and Severein were killed in Molina de Segura in mid-may 2013, with Visser playing for local club CAV

Murcia 2005 between 2009 and 2011, before the club went under due to huge debts, including to Visser herself. One of the suspects, Juan Cuenca Lorente, was a manager at the club and allegedly had a conflict with the Dutch couple. Prosecutors believe that he paid the other two suspects – Romanians Valentin Ion and Constantin Stan- several thousand euros to get rid of the couple, who died in a holiday apartment in Molina de Segura. When friends noticed they disappeared in May 2013 after hiring a car at Alicante-Elche airport, a widespread search took place around the Murcia area before their remains were found in Molina.

Bascuñana said that he hopes the new-look arena

will be ready to be used from next summer.

Relieving Move

Dogs cocking up their legs against Murcia City lamp posts in a moment of relief, are finding things a wee bit harder at the moment. That's because the local council have been using a new anti-

urine repellent for the last two months, which has proved to be a success. The authority now plans to extend the use of the spray as part of a major cleaning operation across the area this autumn.

The anti-dog urine spray apparently cuts down the time that male dogs spray up lamp posts, columns, and building corners, with feedback suggesting that less urinating is in fact taking place. The liquid has no harming effects on the dogs, with major areas around the world like San Francisco reporting great success with the spray. Murcia City Council is also looking at new streetlights for the area, which feature a new type of paint coating that lasts longer, but which also has the bonus of being less appealing for dogs to use as a post of relief.

Burger Buster Crevillente has got itself into the Guinness Book of World Records for the second time in a year with another burgerrelated achievement to add to last year's 464 kilo world-beating hamburger. Sunday saw the longest line of hamburgers ever on the Paseo de la Rambla, which was officially verified at 475 metres, consisting of five thousand burgers. The

new record easily smashed the previous

mark of 307 metres set in Kuwait back in 2009.

Tapas Time

40 Torrevieja bars and restaurants are taking part in tomorrow’s (Saturday October 1st) Torrevieja

Tapas Day which is being staged in tandem with World Tapas Day. A choice of at least two snacks along

with a drink can be bought for two euros and fifty cents at each participating business with the full list available via www.shoppingtorrevieja.com. There will be two time slots where tapas will be available as part of the special day, between 10.00 am and 4.30 pm, and then from 7.30 pm to 11.00 pm. Two free buses will be made available for people to use in the daytime between 11.30 am and 4.00 pm, with details of the stops also published via the website.

Serial Stealers

Two Algerian men, who have been arrested on 48 previous occasions, have been picked up by the National Police for stealing from bars and restaurants in the Orihuela area. The duo, aged in their early forties, would steal at night and disable alarms before they broke into the cash registers and

slot machines, in addition to stealing cigarettes and alcohol. A police raid on their home uncovered boxes of cigarettes stolen from a variety of places. The two men appeared before an Orihuela judge who decided they should be remanded in custody.

A Fair Cop A new local police board is to be created in Los Montesinos. Mayor José

Manuel Butrón says the body will allow residents to make suggestions over

policing as well as the local officers sharing their concerns with the community.

Pay Back Row A woman who won a competition where the prize was an after-tax twelvehundred euro monthly salary for the rest of her life, has been forced to refund over 17 thousand euros in unemployment benefits covering a four year period when she was out of work. Her appeal against the initial verdict has now been turned down by the regional high court of the Balearic Islands, where she lives, but she is expected to continue to fight it through the Spanish legal system. The unnamed defendant is calling for the amount refunded to be reduced to three months rather than the four year period that she got paid benefit, based upon

the 'excessive and unreasonable delays' in investigating her case. The employee who attended to her in the dole office has admitted that she 'mistakenly' told the defendant she would be entitled to the monthly benefit for the over-52s even whilst in receipt of the twelve-hun-

dred euro monthly prize money. Based upon this, the defendant is citing the fact that she was claiming the dole money in good faith, duly spending it relying upon the advice she had been given from the unemployment office, meaning she no longer has it to be able to refund it.

Budget UK air carrier Jet2.com has used San Javier airport as its first destination for the first official flight of its brand new fleet of next-generation Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The company have ordered 30 new planes which have 189 seats with more leg room, as well having more energy-efficient engines. The maiden operational flight of the new plane came in from the Jet2 HQ base of Leeds-Bradford airport. Meanwhile, Jet2 has also recently announced that they will be opening a new base at London Stansted

airport which is good news for the Costa Blanca. The company say that they will be running a service from Stansted to Alicante-Elche airport from March 30th, with flights being scheduled on a daily basis during the peak summer high season. Stansted will be the carrier’s ninth UK base, with chief executive Philip Meeson, saying ‘We believe that London Stansted has great potential for our holiday business, serving the populations of North and East London and the East of England.’

Better Light Energy-saving lights are to be installed in two parts of Dolores thanks to a 120 thousand euro grant from the Alicante Provincial

Polluted Air The World Health Organisation warned this week that nine out of every ten people in the world are affected by health-damaging atmospheric pollutants caused mainly by industry, heating and transport. Massive exposure to this type of pollutant has not only been linked to respiratory illnesses, but also cancers, heart disease and strokes as well.

Volcano Blows Hundreds of tourists, including around 600 foreigners, fled a popular hiking area in Indonesia earlier this week, when Mount Barujari erupted, blowing columns of smoke and ash into the air. However, not all were so keen to get away. There were those that stayed behind to take photos and video the natural disaster.

Many More Wheels The number of cars made in Spain went up by nearly 10 per cent in the first eight months of 2016, compared to the same period last year. The figures, which were released by the Association of Car Manufacturers, show that close to two million cars were produced this year up to the end of August.

Alicnate’s Worried Farmers The severe drought has led to over 40 million euros of losses for Alicante Province farmers over the last year or so, according to a farming union. Over 18 million euros have been lost in the Vega Baja region alone, with the Uniò of Llauradors warning of a sharp rise in that figure if there’s no rain in the next fortnight. The Uniò has called for government help for farmers to offset losses and to stop them quitting the industry.

Nightclub Jailings

A Madrid court has jailed five men over the stampede deaths of five young women at an overcrowded Halloween event they organised in the capital in 2012. The court found the five guilty of negligent homicide and sentenced them to prison

terms ranging from twoand-a-half to four years. Another two men were fined 3,600 euros for their role in the deaths. The court ordered the seven men to pay 350,000 euros to the families of each victim of the tragedy. Three women, aged

between 18 and 20, were killed in a stampede in the early hours of November 1st, 2012 at the MadridArena venue, and two others aged 17 and 20 died later in hospital from their injuries. The longest sentence was handed to Miguel Angel Flores, the owner of a private company that organised the event. The court said that he sold 16,492 tickets for a venue that could only hold 10,620 people, "which generated obvious risk for the physical safety of those present". It said Flores had ordered the closure of exit routes and stairs and had sacrificed security "with the aim of making the biggest possible economic gain".

Fugitive Caught

A 32-year old British man has been detained in Mazarrón on a European Arrest Warrant, after fleeing the UK after being guilty of a string of charges including drug trafficking, dangerous

driving, and violence. The unnamed man was tracked down by the National Police to the Murcia region where he was living with his partner, and faces 27 years behind bars once he returns to Britain.

Cosy Casa

A Hasty Retreat A barking dog foiled a four-strong burglary gang in the Orihuela area last week. The owners were woken by their pet dog in the early hours and they spotted a young man jumping over their fence in a quick exit, after the dog disturbed him. He was part of a four-strong gang aged between 19 and 22 who were eventually arrested in

the village of Raiguero de Bonanza after the home owner gave the National

Police an accurate description of their getaway car, and the fleeing burglar.

The new condensation boilers are now 30% cheaper to run compared with a standard combination boiler. Solar hot water systems are available from 1795€ plus IVA. Supply all your hot water throughout the year. All systems are legal and registered. A complete kitchen and bathroom design and installation service is also available. All top brands and products are used and at very competitive prices.

Tipping at restaurants and cafes in Spain continues to be minimal, if at all, according to a survey carried out last month by the country's hospitality federation. Seventeenhundred restaurants took part in the survey which showed that over 70 percent of customers tip less than five percent, with many people leaving no tips at all. There is absolutely no obligation in Spain to tip, and restaurant owners in the survey were strongly against any form of compulsory service charge, with only four percent supporting such an idea. The recent recession was cited for people being less generous, with business owners saying that their major financial concern was the number of potential customers reserving tables and then simply not turning up.

Corruption Quiz

The trial of the former head of the International Monetary Fund, Rodrigo Rato, began on Monday, with Rato accused of corruption when he was in charge of Bankia. He and other executives are accused of misusing funds on hotels, parties, and high-end shopping. Uncovered in 2013 by a

journalist who saw a hacked email alluding to “black credit cards”, the case threatens to land Spain's former economy minister in jail and with a hefty fine. Rato is standing trial with 65 other former executives and board members at Caja Madrid and Bankia, whose near-collapse

sparked an EU bailout of Spain’s financial sector. They are accused of having paid for personal expenses with credit cards put at their disposal by both banks, without ever justifying them or declaring them to tax authorities. Altogether, they allegedly spent 12 million euros between 2003 and 2012 – sometimes splashing out at the height of Spain’s economic crisis. According to the indictment, Rato maintained the “corrupt system” established by his predecessor Miguel Blesa when he took the reins of Caja Madrid in 2010. He allegedly replicated the system when he took charge of Bankia, a group formed in 2011 out of the merger of Caja Madrid with six other savings banks.

Groomer Nabbed The National Police have arrested a man for allegedly producing child pornography after a yearlong investigation revealed that the suspect posed as a young bisexual girl on social media. He then contacted children and tricked them into sending explicit material to him. Police say the suspect's electronic devices contained around 120,000 pictures, 800 videos and more than six thousand phone numbers of around 103 victims. Police say all the victims were

underage girls, most between 10 and 14 years old. The owner of the material was arrested in his home in Zaragoza, northeast of Madrid. Police were alerted after a woman reported that

her underage daughter had sent the suspect intimate pictures via social media in exchange for refilling funds on her mobile phone. Authorities say the man had a record of similar crimes.

Just An Exercise

Helicopters and rescue vehicles were out in force

last week as part of an emergency exercise in the

Vega Baja which looked at what would happen if the River Segura burst its banks. 500 people were involved in the simulation at the La Pedrera marshes in the wake of a possible Gota Fria storm and it ended a week of emergency exercises taking in Orihuela, Redován, Algorfa, Callosa and Bigastro.

Neymar’s Extra Time Spain's High Court has reopened a fraud and corruption investigation into Brazilian soccer player Neymar over his transfer to Barcelona from Santos, after an appeal by the public prosecutor. A High Court judge had initially dropped the charges in July against Neymar and his father-cumagent Neymar Da Silva Santos, as well as against former Barcelona president Sandro Rossell and exSantos president Odilio Rodrigues. Both Brazilian club Santos and Barcelona have come under fire for the way the transfer was handled in 2013, with several investigations carried out in both countries into whether any part of Neymar's fee had been concealed. Barcelona agreed in June

to pay a five point five million euro fine to authorities to settle the case and said it recognized errors in its tax treatment of Neymar's signing for the fiscal years of 2011 and 2013. Neymar, who has extended his contract with Barcelona until 2021, has denied any wrongdoing in the matter. The case emerged after various complaints over the transfer price paid by Barcelona to sign Neymar.

A Brazilian investment group which owned part of the player's transfer rights said that it had received less money than it was entitled to as Barcelona concealed the fee. The High Court said in its written ruling last Friday that after reviewing the case and the decision to drop it, it believed there was evidence that possible crimes had been committed.

Militants Held Two Spaniards were arrested in Madrid last week after being accused of publicly praising the Islamic State attacks on Paris and planning to join the militants. Police detained the elder of the two after learning he had travelled to Turkey before returning to Spain several days later. The 27-year-old told college classmates that he planned to fight for IS and criticised moderate Muslims. He and an 18year-old man were accused of glorifying terrorism as well as planning to join the jihadist group. The National Police then made two further arrests on Monday of two Moroccans, including one in the Murcia region on suspicion of being jihadists. Spain has now detained 35 people this year with suspected links to IS.

Neighbourly Dispute

A 38-year old man who locked up a neighbour in an Alicante apartment block and then set fire to it, has been arrested by the National Police. The incident happened on September 15th when firefighters were called to a fire and discovered a man had been locked up in a

room, who they rescued before the blaze spread. The detained man, a Moroccan national, has been charged with attempted murder and endangering the lives of people, with reports that he had threatened to torch the whole building earlier in the month.

Lemons Squeezed

Gang Of Shame

A Nigerian-run prostitution ring has been broken up by the National Police who arrested 24 people as well as freeing 21 of the gang's victims, including a 16-year-old. The arrests were carried out in with the 21 women being forced to work in Madrid and Castellon in the northern part of the Valencia region during the winter and then

transported to Ibiza where they were made to work in one of the most exclusive parts of the island. The police said the women were ordered to work for over 14 hours a day and unless they returned with at least a thousand euros, they had to kneel for hours and were beaten with sticks. The victims lived in a space of 30

Second Bison Killing A 22-man strong lemon rusting gang who were involved in at least 33 fruit robberies amounting to four tonnes of the citrus fruit, have been rounded up by the Guardia Civil. The thieves stole 100 thousand kilos of fruit from

farms in Cox, as well as from plantations around the Murcia region. The lemons would then be shipped south in convoys down to Andulucia and the town of Roquetas de Mar, where they would be sold to the general public.

Authorities are investigating the death of a second European bison in the Valencia region, which was found decapitated just days after staff discovered the headless body of the herd’s dominant male. The death of the bison was similar to that of Sauron, the 660kg male, whose decapitated body

was found at the reserve a fortnight ago, and as reported in last week’s Courier. A regional government spokesman said the animal had been decapitated after death. “Either it died of a natural death, or it was poisoned before being decapitated by an axe,” he said. The investigation is ongoing.

square meters and shared beds just 90 cms wide. The majority of these women came from poor areas of Nigeria and were tricked into coming to Spain on the false promise of job offers, but on arrival in Spain, following a journey which took them through Libya or Morocco and through refugee camps in Italy, they were forced to work as prostitutes. The majority of the money earned was then shipped to Nigeria. The organisation which exploited them was led by women. As well as the arrests, one of which was made in Munich, police searched seven residences in Spain and Germany and blocked 20 bank accounts belonging to members of the organization.

Tony Mayes - About Life

There have been some grave warnings coming from the hawks within the EU that Britain will have a hard time in the forthcoming Brexit negotiations. They have warned that the EU will give little and Britain will have to concede a lot. Any sign of weakness would encourage other EU countries to consider following the UK's lead. Other hawks have suggested that if they make exiting as difficult as possible, Britain will eventually give up and concede much in negotiations, especially the free movement of people. The threats from EU hard-liners keep coming, the

latest from the President of the European Parliament who has warned there will be "no a la carte menu" when it comes to reaching a Brexit deal with Brussels and the Parliament could block any final deal reached. Charming lot aren't they? It has reminded me of how Britain stood alone against the might of the Nazis 76 years ago when all that stood between a German invasion was the courage of the RAF few. And that magnificent speech by Churchill which was such a wonderful rallying cry to spearhead British determination to succeed. That's

Churchill's Words Still Resonate

what we need now. Here's what he said:-. "We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, We shall fight on the seas and oceans. We shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air; we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches. We shall fight on the landing grounds. We shall fight in the fields and in the streets. We shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for

a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it, were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God’s good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old." With just a few tweaks that speech (which stirs me whenever I read it) is just as relevant today, as it was way back. If Europe wants to put a trading tariff on Britain, then Britain should double the tariff on Europe. Why do I think Britain should tell hawks in the

A Rental Warning

A Spanish person who rented out his apartment has learnt a salutary lesson for doing so - something that has proved extremely costly. The apartment is close to where

we live in Orihuela Costa and it was taken over by two young women in the spring, and who quickly turned the premises into one of ill repute. Men would turn up at

all hours of the evening and night, whilst others would be going to nearby streets looking for the address. At the house were two dogs which were left out during the day-

EU to go to hell? Because there are some five point eight million positions in the bloc linked to trade with the UK, compared with three point six million jobs nationally tied to the European Union. In other words, Europe needs Britain a whole lot more than Britain needs Europe. The EU has far more to lose than Britain if it imposes trade barriers between the UK and the single market following Brexit. All but five of the 27 EU members have more jobs riding on exports to Britain than Britain has on exports to those countries. Theresa May is our Churchill. She has an

extremely powerful financial ace to use against the EU hawks and I hope she uses it effectively. I am heartened by rumours of a possible Viking trade pact, embodying Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark with the UK at the helm. And I have no doubt Britain would do very well forging deals with many countries worldwide including our Commonwealth partners whilst Europe could quickly become a "take it or leave it" option. In other words, "the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.

Takeaway Horror time to bark at any passer-by. One was a vicious looking Rottweiler-type dog. Within days, nearby residents were up in arms, as complaints were repeatedly made to the community president and administrator and to the police who attended repeatedly. But despite demands for the owner of the property to act, nothing it seemed would shift the unwelcome newcomers. All through the summer disruption continued, with loud music blaring out from the property when the girls were not "working". Water and power were cut to the house, and finally earlier this month the girls quit, disappearing from the apartment but leaving a wave of destruction, obvious from the debris in the garden and more than likely continuing inside, no doubt a costly packet to put right. It's an obvious warning to anyone else tempted into thinking they can make some easy rental money.

Next time you're in the UK and fancy a takeaway, consider this - one in seven establishments have failed food hygiene inspections because they are filthy and 'urgently require improvement'. In certain pockets of the country, as many as half the takeaways are deemed unsafe. Nationwide, more than seven thousand takeaways and eight thousand restaurants failed their inspections and that equated to one in 13 restaurants and one in seven takeaways and sandwich shops across the country. Reasons for failing include dirty kitchens, infestations of rodents and storing

food at unsafe temperatures. The area with the highest fail rate for takeaways was Newham in east London, with 50.4 per cent. This was followed by Epsom and Ewell (46.2 per cent), Edinburgh (38.2 per cent), Manchester (34 per cent), Birmingham (33.8 per cent) and Islington (32.2 per cent). Two years ago, Wales made it mandatory for food establishments to publicly display their ratings, which led to a significant improvement in safety. This should be rolled out across the UK - and why not across the whole of Europe? After all, food poisoning does not respect borders.

Gauntlet Thrown

PSOE Socialist party leader, Pedro Sanchez, has called on his party to either back him or sack him. Sanchez said he was willing to put his leadership to the vote at a primary election for party leader to be held at a PSOE federal congress on October 23rd. Sanchez threw down the gauntlet in the wake of some disastrous results obtained by the PSOE in the Basque and Galician regional elections on Sunday. The PSOE won just 11.94 percent of the vote in the Basque Region and 17.88 percent in Galicia, where they were beaten into third place by the left-wing Podemos party. These results follow the PSOE's two worst-ever general election results, which saw them win 90 out of 350 seats in congress in

December 2015 vote and just 85 in the June 26th election. The results have caused divisions among Socialists with some regional leaders believing the party should abstain in an investiture vote to allow Partido Popular leader Mariano Rajoy to form a minority government, while Sanchez wants to negotiate a coalition with other parties. "It is evident that there are those who do not think the same as I do, who think

that we should abstain and that we should not even think about trying to form a government with just 85 deputies," said Sanchez. "I am willing to assume responsibility. I realise there is a debate after seeing the declarations of important regional leaders that is opening a division which will harm us electorally and that is why I am doing this," he added. Sanchez called for party unity, saying it needed to speak with "one voice."

Strong Whiff

A truckload of garlic destined for Holland had more in it then met the eye, as the National Police arrested three men for stuffing the vehicle with 130 kilos of marijuana. The trio, from Poland, the Ukraine, and Holland, hoped that the aroma of the garlic would mask the smell of the drugs, but officers intercepted the

lorry nevertheless. The vehicle had 25 airtight marijuana-filled plastic bags on it as well as the garlic, with drugs having been grown locally in Alicante Province. The men have been detained in custody, with a house search also uncovering more drugs and 300 thousand euros in cash.

Tourist Spotlight 15 councils across the Vega Baja, with the notable exception of Orihuela, took part in the inaugural Tourism Fair at Almoradi's Plaza de la Constitucion at the weekend. Besides representatives of the various authorities and Almoradi mayor, Jaime Pérez, the event was also attended by Raquel Heute, director-general of the Valencia Tourist Board, and Ángel Murcia, head of Valencia's Tourist Information department. The event which featured cuisine and entertainment, was aimed at showcasing the Vega Baja area as a major tourist destination for domestic and international visitors.

A local environmental group has complained to the Guardia Civil in San Miguel de Salinas about what they claim is illegal land clearing work going on a farm in Lo Zafra. Carlos

Javier Durá, the chairman of the Association of Friends of Sierra Escalona (ASE), says that the current landworking is breaking regional laws over the protection of forest soil.

Net Resistance One in five Spaniards have never used the internet according to a survey produced by Eurostat for the Madrid-based Institute of Economic Studies. Data showed that 19 percent of Spaniards had never had the experience of surfing the net, with Spain below the EU average of non-users at 16 percent of people aged between 16 and 24. Though the non-usage figures in Spain seem dramatic, they are easily trumped by over EU nations, with 35 percent of Bulgarians, 32 percent of Romanians, and 30 percent of Greeks never having been online. The internet not surprisingly has an age split, with the study showing that 98 percent of Spaniards aged between 16 and 29 used it, with the figure falling to 51 percent for those aged between 55 and 74.

A male leopard tortoise weighing a large 40 kilos is being looked after by an animal welfare group, after it was found trudging around the streets of Bigastro. A eagle-eyed driver

spotted it on a road and called the Guardia Civil, who said that the tortoise was in good health but it was not micro-chipped, which meant that they could not track down its owner.

Bone Of Contention

British vets and charities are warning dog owners not to give their pets a bone because it could be a killer for them. The PDSA veterinary charity has issued the warning after its vets and nurses reported seeing dozens of dogs suffering from damage to their digestive tracts and blockages caused by bone splinters or larger pieces. The advice appears to run counter to many dog owners’ assumptions that their pets benefit from chewing on raw or cooked bones as a way of absorbing calcium and other nutrients and cleaning their teeth. But Rebecca Ashman, a senior vet with the PDSA, Britain’s leading veterinary charity, said: “We don’t recommend bones as treats because unfortunately our vets and nurses regularly see dogs with digestive tract damage and blockages

caused by splinters or larger pieces of bone being swallowed and becoming stuck.” Latest figures from the PDSA showed that last year its hospitals treated 59 dogs who swallowed bones, although no figures for injuries or fatalities were available. The charity’s warning has been echoed by the British Veterinary Association. Its junior vice president, Gudrun Ravetz, told The Daily Telegraph: “Cooked bones are dangerous to cats and dogs and vets routinely see animals who have consumed them, whether through being fed the cooked bones directly or from finding them whilst scavenging through bins. In many cases the animals will require surgery to remove bone shards, splinters and blockages, but it can also prove fatal"

Exercising Your Dog Do you feel guilty that your dog doesn’t get enough time with you? It’s a trap that happens to most of us, but one that can be easily remedied. Here are some guidelines for enriching your pet’s life and health through exercise. EXERCISE MAKES SENSE Big or small, young or old, dogs need to exercise daily. While some breeds have special needs that have to be taken into account, and dogs do slow down as they age, they still need to take part in some form of daily physical activity. Without activity, your dog will become bored, frustrated and unhealthy. Exercise tones the muscles, helps the body and metabolic system to function properly, and engages the mind. Anyone who has had a dog that suffers from lack of physical activity and mental stimulation will tell you that they will often turn to destructive behaviours -- behaviours that magically disappear once the dog is getting out every day. Physically, dogs will also become obese if they are not allowed to burn off the calories they take in during the day. This is especially true if they are being

given a lot of treats in compensation for lack of much-needed attention. HOW MUCH EXERCISE? Though exercise needs are based on a dog’s age, breed, size and overall health, your dog should spend between 30 minutes to two hours on an activity every day. Breeds in the hunting, working, or herding groups (e.g., Labrador retrievers, hounds, collies and shepherds) will need the most exercise. If your dog is in one of these groups and is in good health, it should be getting at least 30 minutes of rigorous exercise along with her one to two hours of daily activity. Requirements aren't as easily established for every other dog. Because most dogs are of mixed heritage, their needs will be different depending on the breed they are descended from. If your dog is a short-nosed breed, like a Bulldog, for example, he will not need a lot of daily exercise. A casual walk around the neighbourhood will be sufficient. Pay attention to your dog's signals. If he is restless or pacing, he is probably itching to get out for a nice long walk. If, on the other hand, your dog is con-

tent to just lie around, there may not be such a great need for exercise. A short walk will be enough to keep everything in order. Dogs that are less active or older, may have conditions that are slowing them down. Whether it is because of too much weight, achy joints and muscles, or they just like to mellow out most of the time, they still need some activity to keep the body working fully as it should. If you have any concerns about whether your dog can handle a long walk or whether you should implement an exercise plan for her, talk to your vet. You don’t want to pressure your dog into doing things that are too strenuous or you could end up with bigger problems. Start slow if your dog has not been accustomed to being physically active, and observe her response, adding more activities or more mileage as she gets stronger. Your dog should be happily tired, not exhausted, when you are done exercising her for the day. EXERCISE TIPS Before you begin an exercise programme with your dog, be sure to visit your vet for a

health check. Your vet can recommend an exercises plan that is appropriate for your dog's age, breed and condition. Plan to start out slowly and work your way up to longer walking or playing routines as they seem suitable. Additionally, don't forget to allow for a warm-up period and cool-down time at the end of your session. A leisurely walk around you local block before exercise should be enough to warm the muscles and prepare them for a serious game of fetch and catch. And don’t forget that mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise. Don’t be afraid of taking new running paths with your dog, going to different parts of your area, or introducing new toys and games to your routine. Most importantly, spend time exercising daily, not just on the weekends, even if only for a short time. At the very least, dogs and humans alike can benefit from 30 minutes of physical activity each day. Start simple, without putting pressure on yourself or your dog, and you will find that you are both looking forward to this happy time of the day -- every day.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

We just don't get enough of Robbie Coltrane on the box these days, which has made his starring role in Channel Four's drama, National Treasure, an absolute treat and a reminder of what a class act he was in the marvellous Cracker. Coltrane is in virtually every scene in this topical tale of an old comedian that is facing a historical rape charge dating back to the early nineties. He loves his wife (played by the wonderful Julie Walters) but

Robbie’s New Cracker

despite that, he enjoys "playing away" with women, including paying for sex. It's a complex character portrayal from Coltrane in the best new British drama I've seen this autumn. It's just a shame that we are already at the halfway point of the four episode run. I just hope that Four's drama budgets aren't slashed because of the 75 million pounds that they overpaid for Bake Off. ITV's Paranoid should have been good, as it's been made by the people

that brought us Happy Valley and Last Tango in Halifax, along with a script penned by Bill Gallagher of Lark Rise to Candleford and The Paradise fame. Sadly we've got a police procedural crammed with predictable lines, and a bunch of copper characters that are in need of psychiatric attention. That's all rather sad, because Robert Glenister and Lesley Sharp did their best, but their quality along with the pedigree of Red Productions cannot save

this from being a disappointing dud. I'm sure that last night's second episode got destroyed in the ratings by viewers switching to BBC 2 for the third season opener of the final series of The Fall (more next week). Glenister's last big TV hit was the fun grifter caper, Hustle (bring it back), which was created and written by Tony Jordan. Now the former Eastenders "glory days" writer has come up with the heavily-hyped Sky One drama, Hooten And The Lady. It's a dreadful title for what is an Indiana Jones meets The African Queenstyle show, which I didn't want to like because of Sky's hysterical promotion. As soon as I saw Jordan's name on the opening credits, I decided that this might have something going for it, and it has. Hooten is an American adventurer/amiable rogue who meets "The Lady", Alex Spencer-Parker of the British Museum, in Brazil's Amazon forest, and they form an unlikely partnership in searching for artefacts around the world. The one-liners come up thick and fast, and there's been a sizeable proportion

of the budget spent on some great location shoots. It all may be a bit corny, but give me this any time over a cheap prime time reality documentary. It is entertaining but will Sky order a second run like they did deservedly for Lucky Man earlier this year? I somehow doubt it, unless the tills start ringing on international sales, which Sky is clearly hoping for. I didn't like the last series of American Horror Story on FOX UK, with a hotel setting and too much emphasis on pushing boundaries to the edge, and not enough good story telling. I'm pleased to say that AHS has got back to basics for season six, with the classic horror setting of a couple moving into a big rural house with lots of nasty things going on to spook them. And I do mean real nasty! Most of the old AHS cast regulars are back and I like the idea of creating a TV crime documentary format to tell the story. AHS is never predictable and I suspect that something is going to happen in the next episode to shake things up, which is something that, barring last year, I've always

BY DAVE SILVER

Housework? You Won’t See Me For Dust! Mrs.S told me the other morning that she'd be out for the afternoon. I considered my options on how I would spend the rest of my day. I could catch up on my share of much-neglected housework. I was well aware that I was tardy when it came to keeping stuff tidy. Indeed, Mrs.S had bought me a can of Mr Sheen on the day I'd left my workplace for the last time -- a weird sort of retirement gift for sure. Mrs.S had presented it to me, together with a collection of cloths, saying: 'Here you are. You are now equipped to fulfil your quota of the cleaning.' That was in November, 2002. Now, nearly 14 years later, I was still on the same can of Mr Sheen. Most of the cloths were also still in a

spanking clean state. But any more thought of doing housework that day suddenly triggered an allergy-type reaction -- a bout of uncontrollable sneezing. Clearly, merely thinking about disturbing my home's dust-laden surfaces was enough to get up my nose. Having ruled out housework, I thought I might cut the grass. But I'd loaned out my lawn mower and in a fit of anticipatory laziness had refused to accept its return. With housework and gardening now both nonstarters, I thought I would attempt some creative writing. I decided to visit the establishment where my favourite folk lurked -- those odd people whose weird ways and strange pronouncements had bright-

ened up many a dull Dave Silver column in The Courier. I arrived at the pub at the same time as Fag Ash Bill. We bade each other hello and then had to say goodbye because, of course, Bill wasn't allowed by law to enter the premises with a lit cigarette between his fingers. 'See you later, Bill,' I said and then paused to add: 'When you've finished your ciggy, instead of immediately lighting up another one, why don't you take the opposite of a fag break and come inside for a nice cool glass of something.' 'Might do that, Dave,' replied Bill, drawing on his cigarette as he settled on his usual standing spot on the pavement. 'It looks like it's going to

be another dry day,' Fag Ash Bill sighed. 'All this passing traffic kicking up the dust could give me a tickly throat. This town needs more street sweeping machines.' Bill's mention of keeping the roads clean triggered another bout of sneezing on my part. I had to wait five minutes until it subsided. I knew it was five minutes because Fag Ash Bill had smoked five cigarettes by the time my nasal passages had cleared. I entered the pub and strode up to the bar. 'Are you wanting to partake of a pint this minute or will you be waiting for someone to buy one for you?' asked Dave the barman. What a cheek, I thought, but couldn't say anything because Dave the barman was absolutely correct.

liked about the show. American superstar, James Corden, has made sure his CBS contract has time off for him to come back to the UK to record A League of Their Own, which continues to be a real hoot on Sky One. Six years on, it continues to deliver loads of laughs and is a sports quiz that can be watched and enjoyed by people who have no interest in sport whatsoever. If Corden's status is on the rise on both sides of the Atlantic, spare a thought for Jonathan Ross. I'm a Ross fan, and I think the BBC should hire him back to replace the quitting Claudia Winklemann on Film 2016. I just don't like seeing his ITV chat show failing to reach the heights of what he did at the Beeb, and it's not just an issue of getting good guests, as he's done well on that front whilst rival Graham Norton has been taking a break. The show needs some kind of a revamp, and perhaps with Ross taking a sabbatical to America, we might get it next year, as the next series will not air until the autumn of 2017.

I looked around the pub. My mates were in -- Indoor Lou, Fearful Phil, and Daft Barry etc -- but they, too, were waiting for someone to buy them a drink 'Say something funny.' I implored them. 'I need some material for my next Courier column.' My pubmates shrugged. 'We're not talking,' they chorused, 'until our leader and mentor Andromeda Arkwright walks through those doors with money in her hand to lubricate our tonsils.' I decided to freshen up in the gents' but found my way blocked by the horizontal form of our former leader and mentor Ol' Red Eyes who was as usual semicomatose on the carpet. I gently pushed him aside with my foot but then had to

negotiate my way around a piece of machinery which seemed to have been around for ages. ‘It's about time you removed this obstacle,' I observed to Dave the barman. 'It makes it very difficult to get to the bathroom without tripping over the blooming thing.' Dave the barman glared at me. 'But it's YOUR flaming lawn mower!' he declared. 'I brought it back to the pub weeks ago after doing my garden but you haven't bothered shifting it.' 'Okay, okay,' I said. 'I'll take it back home with me tonight -- unless you want to trade a round of drinks for it.' 'No way,' said Dave the barman. 'You lot must pay for your drinks. You're not going to use a lawn mower in order to get half-cut.'

Celebrity Home Secrets

Monday 3 October 8.00pm - 8.30pm ITV Six famous faces revisit their former homes to share memories and secrets from when they lived there. Choreographer Arlene Phillips revisits the house where she created outrageous 80’s dance group Hot Gossip and reveals how in her 20’s she was a babysitter for famous movie director Ridley Scott’s young son. Arlene Phillips is perhaps best known in her role as one of the original judges on Strictly Come Dancing, but she’s had an illustrious career in dance spanning more than 50 years. She was born in Stockport in 1943 and although she dreamt of coming to London and becoming a dancer her dream ended when her mother died and she had to stay at home and look after her dad and 13-year-old sister. However in 1966 aged 23 she had the chance to attend a week-long dance course in

London’s Covent Garden. By the end of that week her life changed forever. She was offered a scholarship by the legendary dance teacher Molly Molloy and Arlene remembers ‘That was it. I never went home. I stayed in London and I don’t know how I did because I had not a penny in my purse.’ Molly found Arlene a job as babysitter and nanny to a friend of hers, a young television and commercials director Ridley Scott, who would later become the top Hollywood director. This pretty house in South-West London is the first house Arlene revisits. She recalls ‘this was the kind of house that I aspired to. It was all white when people didn’t have all white’. It was a far cry from the flat she grew up in above her father’s barbershop. It was Ridley Scott who would later give Arlene one of her first big professional breaks. Molly choreographed for his commercials, and Arlene became her assistant.

Railway Nation: Across Britain In A Day

Saturday 1 October 9.00pm-10.00pm BBC TWO This is Britain - in verse. Train carriages are one of the few spaces left in Britain where all walks of life meet. With British people now taking double the amount of train journeys they did in 1997, this programme celebrates Britain’s love of trains by asking six poets - Sabrina Mahfouz (pictured), Michael Symmons Roberts, Liz Berry, Andrew McMillan, Imtiaz Dharker and Sean O’Brien to capture, in verse, the human stories of those on board one railway journey across the country. Beginning in London and ending in Glasgow, Railway Nation: Across Britain In A Day follows a similar route to that which W.H Auden and

Benjamin Britten took when they created Night Mail almost 80 years ago - a work which told the story of Britain as it slept one night. Railway Nation: Across Britain In A Day reinvents this journey for the 21st century by following travellers during the day. The voices of travellers of all ages and backgrounds, and from across the different regions of Britain will be weaved with those of the six poets observing them, to capture a day in contemporary Britain. They’ll capture the meaning of these journeys, what the travellers are hoping for and even what becomes of them when they arrive. It’s a train journey which will reveal us to ourselves as we travel urgently, hopefully, despairingly towards our destinations.

The Forgotten Children

Tuesday 4 October 9.00pm-10.00pm ITV “Children here study and go to school. Their parents get them whatever they want. We don’t have anything. I feel like people don’t see me.” 13-year-old Syrian orphan Mohamed. This new documentary for ITV follows the heartbreaking stories of refugee orphans stranded across Europe. 88,000 refugee children are now stuck in Europe without their parents. They thought they would be safe here but The Forgotten Children reveals many have faced violence, police brutality and hundreds have been imprisoned in detention centres and police cells. Alone and afraid, many are also vulnerable to trafficking gangs and sexual exploitation. Governments have moved many of the children into state run camps and closed the doors to journalists. This programme hears their disturbing stories of suffering and survival. In Greece thousands of children are living in camps and sleeping rough. More than 3,000 are without their parents. Nagham, 12, and her 13-year-old brother Mohamed are orphans from the Syrian city of Aleppo. Their home is now a derelict petrol station in Northern Greece. There are no showers or toilets and they sleep in a tent. Nagham and Mohamed’s mother was killed in an airstrike. Their family home was destroyed. Their father was kidnapped at gunpoint by a faction fighting in the country’s civil war five years ago.

Burrata with chargrilled grapes and basil

To mark the 30th anniversary of the UN’s International Day Of Peace earlier this week, International Alert, a leading peace-building organisation, is currently holding its third annual Talking Peace

festival. As part of the event, which runs until 2 October, they’ve set up the Conflict Cafe on London’s South Bank, which will serve food from Lebanon to begin with and later from Sri Lanka. The

doors are now open and the communal tables are all set up, so do pop along if you can, to share some food in support of peace. Today’s dishes could have been united by anything, real-

ly (chickpeas, grapes, aubergines) because what you’re eating matters less than the act of sharing food, which really does matter. It’s not the only tool for peace, true, but it is a step in the right direction. Burrata with chargrilled grapes and basil If you can’t get hold of burrata, use buffalo mozzarella instead. This is enough to serve six as a generous first course, or as a light lunch with some crusty bread to mop up the dressing. 300g seedless red grapes 2 tbsp Valdespino (or other top-quality sherry) vinegar 3 tbsp olive oil 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 1½ tsp soft dark brown sugar

1½ tsp fennel seeds, toasted and lightly crushed Flaky sea salt and black pepper 12 18cm-long wooden skewers 3 balls burrata (or buffalo mozzarella; 600g net weight) 6 small sprigs red or green basil, to serve Put the grapes in a medium bowl with the vinegar, oil, garlic, sugar, a teaspoon of fennel seeds, a quarter-teaspoon of salt and plenty of black pepper. Using your hands, toss to coat, then set aside to marinate for half an hour (or even longer, especially if you want to prepare the grapes ahead of time). Skewer six or seven grapes on to each stick, and reserve the marinade – you’ll need it

for serving. Put a ridged griddle pan on a high heat and ventilate your kitchen. Once the pan is good and hot, grill the grape skewers in batches for two to three minutes in total, turning them over halfway through. Remove from the heat and keep warm while you griddle the remaining skewers. To serve, tear each ball of burrata in two and put one half on each of six plates. Arrange two grape skewers per portion, so they’re leaning against half-cheeses, then spoon a teaspoon and a half of the reserved marinade over each portion. Sprinkle over the remaining fennel seeds, garnish each plate with a sprig of basil and serve.

Smothered cabbage with sausages Serves 4 900g white, green or savoy cabbage A large white onion 75g pancetta or bacon 2 tbsp olive oil 60g butter Salt and black pepper 1–3 tbsp red wine vinegar 4 large/8 small or a rope of sausage 1 Discard the tough outer leaves of the cabbage, cut into quarters, cut away the tough core and then shred each quarter. 2 Peel and thinly slice the onion and dice the pancetta. Put the olive oil, onion and pancetta in a large, deep frying pan or casserole (with a well-fitting lid) over a medium-low heat and cook, stirring, until the onion is soft and translucent and the pancetta has rendered its fat.

3 Add the cabbage and turn it a few times until it is starting to wilt, then add the butter and stir again until it has melted. 4 Add salt, pepper and the vinegar (if you are only adding 1 or 2 tablespoons,

add water to make the liquid up to 3 tablespoons), stir again then cover the pan tightly and reduce the heat to very low. Cook for an hour or more, lifting the lid and stirring every now and then, adding a little more water if

the pan looks dry, until the cabbage is very tender. 5 Check the seasoning and serve with grilled or oven-baked sausages on top, pouring any juices over the cabbage.Wait for a short time to cool, then serve.

Friday 30th September 2016

Those of my youth were invariably baked or grilled, but now I’ve tried them fried, I don’t think any amount of nostalgia could tempt me back to the oven. Not only does frying the fish fingers give them an unbeatably crisp, delicious coating, but it’s faster, which means the fish inside doesn’t dry out during cooking. As we’re going for fish fingers, rather than Stein’s fancy goujons, there’s no need to incur Mary Berry’s wrath with deep-frying, or even for Torode’s shallow-fried alternative, when Ramsay’s pan-fried recipe, in a pan barely coated with oil, works so well. Like Stein, he suggests sunflower oil, which I like for its neutral flavour. Kimbell goes for rapeseed and Oliver olive oil, both of which work well if you prefer the taste, but I’ve fallen for Ramsay’s idea of finishing the fish fingers with

a modest knob of butter to replicate and improve on that faint margarine flavour I remember from childhood. If you’re concerned about your fat intake, leave it off your peas instead; I promise you won’t regret it. (And yes, fish fingers must always be eaten with peas, if not between two squishy slices of white bread. It’s the law.) Makes about 12 fingers 500g chunky fillets of firm white fish, eg pollack, whiting, cod or haddock, Fine salt, 100g panko breadcrumbs (or 50g panko, 50g fine dry breadcrumbs), 50g plain flour, 2 eggs, beaten with a little milk, Neutral oil, to fry. Small knob of butter, Lightly salt the fish, cover and leave for 20 minutes, then pat dry with kitchen paper. Cut against the grain of the flakes into chunky fingers of your desired size. Finely grind half the panko

breadcrumbs in a food processor or using a stick blender or rolling pin, if using the full 100g. Put these, or the fine dry breadcrumbs, if using these instead, in a wide shallow bowl with the remaining coarse panko, mixing well. Put the beaten eggs in a second wide shallow bowl, and the flour in a third. Coat the fingers first in flour, then in egg, shaking off any excess, then roll in crumbs until completely coated. Pour enough oil into a wide frying pan to just cover the base, and put on a medium to high heat until shimmering. Add the fish fingers and cook for about two to three minutes until golden, then turn and do the same on the other side. Just before they’re ready, add the butter and swirl the pan to melt. Drain the fish fingers on kitchen paper and serve immediately.

Gammon comes into its own with a sweet glaze Ham it up: mustard maple gammon

Maple mustard gammon The glaze is on the spicy side. If you wish, reduce the amount of English mustard by half. Washing up can be a bit of a chore. May I suggest a nonstick roasting tin? Serves 6 gammon 1½kg, unsmoked, boned, rolled and tied bay leaves 3 onion ½ black peppercorns 12 cinnamon stick 1 peaches 3

For the marinade: maple syrup 250ml apricot or peach jam 3 tbsp English mustard 3 tsp grain mustard 3 tbsp ground chilli ½ tsp Put the gammon, rolled and tied, into a very large pot then add the bay leaves, onion, peppercorns and cinnamon. Pour in enough water to almost cover the top of the meat, a good 2 litres. Bring the water to the boil, then skim and discard

any froth that rises to the surface. Leave at a gentle simmer, partially covered by a lid, for an hour. Check from time to time that the water isn’t reducing too much – it should always be just covering the meat. Turn the meat over after half an hour. Set the oven at 180C/gas mark 4. Lift the gammon from its cooking liquor and into a roasting tin. You can dis-

pense with the cooking water as it has done its job and is probably too salty to use as stock. Remove the string and flabby skin from the gammon, leaving in place the fat that lies underneath. Score the fat with a large kitchen knife, preferably in a lattice pattern, so the marinade can get below the surface. Make the marinade by mixing the maple syrup, jam, mustards and chilli together. Spoon the marinade over the meat, pushing it right into the scored fat with the back of a spoon. Slice the peaches in half, remove the stones and place the fruit around the meat, turning them in the marinade. Bake for 25 minutes, basting the meat a couple of times with the marinade from the tin. It will thicken as the meat cooks. What you are after is a golden, sticky crust and sweet pink meat. Serve in thin slices, together with a tuft of watercress if you fancy, and the peaches and sauce from the tin. Leave to cool then serve.

This amazing lentil soup recipe will take you back to hearth and home Lentil soup Serves 6-8 1 nugget of lard 6-8 carrots, roughly chopped 2 potatoes, roughly chopped 1-2 celery stalks, roughly chopped 1-2 leeks, roughly chopped 2 onions, roughly chopped 200g red split lentils, rinsed 1 ham hock 2 bay leaves A few sprigs of fresh parsley Salt and black pepper 1 Fry the vegetables in the lard in a large, deep pan for 10 minutes or so, until softened. Add the lentils and fry for a couple of minutes, stirring, then add the ham hock and enough water to cover plus a bit more. Add the herbs, bring to the boil, then turn down

the heat. Skim any froth from the surface and simmer, covered but with the lid slightly askew to let out excess steam, for a minimum of 2 hours and up to 4-5. Top up with water as necessary until the ham is cooked through. Don’t put in too much water, as this is a thick soup: you can always add more at the end to thin it out. 2 Take out the hock and herbs and set aside. Take out a third to a half of the soup, blend it, then pour that back into the pan. Return it to the hob to heat through, stirring to combine. 3 Shred the ham and put it back into the soup, or serve separately. Finish with lots of chopped parsley, a little salt, if necessary (the hock will give the soup quite a lot), and plenty of black pepper.

Tomatoes with sumac onions and pine nuts

This is my go-to salad right now. Eat it on its own with crusty bread to mop up those gorgeous juices, or as part of a meze-style spread. The quality of the tomatoes you use will make all the difference, so use the ripest and sweetest ones you can find. The addition of a few chunks of ripe avocado is a welcome variation. Serves four. 1 large banana shallot, peeled and sliced into 1mmthick pinwheels 1½ tbsp sumac 2 tsp white-wine vinegar

Salt and black pepper 700g tomatoes – ideally a mixture of large tiger, green and red plum, and red and yellow cherry 2 tbsp olive oil 15g basil leaves, plus a few extra small leaves to garnish 25g pine nuts, toasted Put the shallot in a small bowl with the sumac, vinegar and an eighth of a teaspoon of salt. Mix together with your hands, so the sumac gets well massaged into the shallots, then leave for 30 minutes, to soften. Cut the large tomatoes in

half lengthways and then into 1-1.5cm wedges and put them in a large bowl. Cut the cherry tomatoes in half lengthways and add to the bowl. Pour in the oil, add the basil, a third of a teaspoon of salt and a generous grind of pepper, and toss gently with your hands to combine. Arrange the tomatoes on a large platter and spread the shallots over the top. Lift some of the tomatoes and basil so they are visible above the shallots, sprinkle over the pine nuts and baby basil leaves, and serve.

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN REVIEW

DIRECTOR Antoine Fuqua GENRE Action, Western SYNOPSIS Seven gun men in the old west gradually come together to help a poor village against savage thieves. RELEASE DATE 23 September 2016 (USA) DURATION 2h 13min

This has been billed as a Magnificent Seven for a modern political age in the US, although the original has current resonance. In 1960, the Mexican villagers could travel north to hire their mostly white American mercenaries, and come back

down with them, unimpeded by any Trump wall. And it was a movie against big government: the federales were useless, and in Kurosawa the villagers objected to paying tax to an authority that couldn’t protect them. In the 2016 movie, honest homesteading farmers are murdered and terrorised by a corporate villain who is trying to drive them from their land – mining robber baron Bart Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard). Angry widow Emma Cullen (Haley Bennett) hires Sam Chisolm (Denzel Washington), a lightning-fast gun who turns out to carry

documents proving his lawman’s authority – not unlike Christoph Waltz’s character in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. He is to be joined by lovable rogue Josh (Chris Pratt), former confederate soldier Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke), bearded frontiersman Jack Horne (Vincent D’Onofrio), bandit Vasquez (Manuel GarcíaRulfo), knife-throwing Billy Lee (Lee Byung-hun) and Comanche loner Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier). So there’s some admirable diversity in this new Seven, but this is not so much politi-

cal correctness as superhero correctness: the Seven are presented as an exotic variety, an assemblage of Avengers-type cowboys. The film has some superficial style, and the action sequences are put together competently enough, but there’s little or no sense of jeopardy, of danger threatening people you might really care about. Washington, meanwhile, is under par in this heavyhanded remake and the townsfolk seem to have taken their acting lessons from the cast of Blazing Saddles.

Traiguera Back To Roman Times During the next few days on the 1st and 2nd of October the Castellon town of Traiguera will go back to Roman times. The streets of the old town of the municipality will be again as Thiar Julia, the Roman villa quoted by Ptolemy set in the Via Augusta that passed through Traiguera. A journey of 2,000 years to enjoy a weekend of culture, history and tradition. During this weekend you can live the daily life of a Roman villa, with parades of soldiers, floral dances, cuisine from Roman times, a craft market with local products, and many mythological creatures swarming the most unexpected places of the town: the satyrs, fauns, nymphs and jellyfish will be lurking. The eleventh edition of the Roman Fair Thiar Julia is the per-

fect opportunity to discover the fascinating Roman world thanks to the various activities held in the streets of Traiguera, as well as the large number of exhibitions, guided tours and audiovisual to be performed. The younger will be especially welcome to the fair, which has prepared many activities, including a children's gastronomic workshop such as making bread and also a square full of giant wooden games. Traiguera is located in the Baix Maestrat, surrounded by nature and many sources. The city boasts its pottery past, dating back to the Iberian and Roman times, and that has remained until today. Do not miss to visit the Royal Monastery of Our Lady of Health, the most important monument, the Royal Route Santuari or Pascualino Route, are essential.

The "Enfield Poltergeist" case involved a single mother, Margaret Hodgson, whose four children began reporting strange occurrences: dressers moving, beds shaking, knocking sounds within the walls. Not to mention the levitation and flying toys. At first, Margaret tries denouncing their complaints, convinced they are making things up. But as the unexplained situations escalate, she realizes that something sinister is happening.

Captain America 3 Civil War The Avengers have become known for defending the planet, but the price keeps getting steeper. The most recent Avengers battle sees the team dispatch another evil entity, but the collateral damage to the city is tremendous. There is an outcry from the people to hold the Avengers accountable for the damage they do. Within the team, Captain America feels that the Avengers should be allowed to continue to defend the planet without interference from politicians

Two in five children in England failed to visit an NHS dentist in past year Experts urge parents to limit sugary foods and call for revenue from planned sugar tax to go towards improving dental health their own body weight in sugar each year, it is alarming that 42.1% of children failed to visit an NHS dentist in the last year,” said Prof Nigel Hunt, dean of the faculty of dental surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons. “We urge ministers to act. The soft drinks levy, which will be introduced in 2018, provides an opportunity to invest in tackling tooth decay. Some of the revenue raised through it should be spent on oral health improvement programmes.” The east London borough of Hackney had the lowest proportion in England of More than two out of five children in England did not visit an NHS dentist in the past year, figures show, despite official health advice urging regular checks. Experts described the figures as “woeful” and called on parents and carers to limit children’s consumption of sugary treat foods and for part of the revenue from the planned sugar tax to be

put into improving dental health. In the year to the end of June, more than 6.7 million children visited an NHS dentist, which is just 57.9% of the child population. This was down from 6.9 million (60%) in the preceding year. “There is nothing to smile about in these woeful statistics. With the average five-year-old now eating

REASONS TO VISIT THE DENTIST Almost half of all adults are also ignoring guidance that they should visit a dentist at least once every two years, according to data released by the NHS. In all 22.1 million adults, or 51.7% of the population, saw an NHS dentist in the two years ending on 30 June. However, while that was a small increase from the 22 million adults who attended in the two years to June 2015, the percentage who did so in 201416 was slightly down on the 52% who attended in 2013-15. Hospitals in England spent £35m extracting teeth from under-18s in 2014-15, 61% more than was spent five years earlier.

children who had visited an NHS dentist – just 31.1% in 2015-16. The areas with the next worst records were all in the capital: Kensington and Chelsea (35.9%), Tower Hamlets (37.6%), Waltham Forest (42%) and Merton (42.8%), the latest dental data from NHS Digital showed. In contrast, children in South Tyneside were more likely to have visited the dentist last year than those in any other place (81.6%), closely followed by the City of London (79.6%), Bath and North-East Somerset (78.7%) and Cheshire West and Chester (73.3%). “Tooth decay is a largely preventable disease that can lead to dental problems throughout life,” said Dr Sandra White, director of dental public health at Public Health England. “For children, tooth decay can cause pain, problems with sleep, days off school and problems eating and socialising. Treatment can involve having teeth removed under general anaesthetic.”

What I’m really thinking: The recovered anorexic When I ask if I can meet you at this particular cafe or that specific restaurant, I am only trying to be polite; I’m not posing a question. It is an offer to go to a place I

have meticulously researched and probably visited before. Spontaneity is a word that will never be associated with my character. I consider myself “recov-

ered”, but I do not like the term. I suffered from a mental illness for about four years, gripped in a stranglehold of control, starvation and numbers. I am now at a point where I manage my disease. There will be days when restrictive impulses fail to intrude my thoughts, but there will be times when they resurface. I try hard to fight against them. Check myself. Breathe, think, rationalise. Some former anorexics are bombarded by remnants

of their disordered-eating pasts. It can be a silently

screaming deluge that other people fail to notice. After

all, who really reads into a moment’s hesitation at an offer of chocolate cake or the double-check with the barista that it was indeed skinny milk in your latte? Echoes of my illness can be found in my attempts to retain control of eating situations. I’m not necessarily counting, but neither am I completely free. I cannot suddenly freefall into a frenzy of burgers, burritos and buttermilk pancakes. Returning to normality has to be done slowly, meaningfully and enduringly. Recovery has taught me that wellness goes beyond food and body shape. I eat now to nourish my body and I yearn to be strong and healthy. My concept of elegance has transformed. I hope society’s will one day follow suit.

Rectal Bleeding and Constipation Rectal Bleeding can cause panic in people, especially those aware that colorectal cancer can cause rectal bleeding. However, most bleeding from the rectum is not due to colorectal cancer but from hemorrhoids brought on by constipation. Chronic constipation which is constipation occurring over a period will eventually lead to hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are varicose veins of the rectum, and they may appear as lumps protruding from the rectum. Hemorrhoids can also occur

inside the walls of the rectum where they remain unseen. Constipation will cause straining to pass stool, which weakens the veins of the rectum and over time they become damaged and cause bleeding. Constipation nearly always results from a deficiency of magnesium. Magnesium helps the rectum absorb water from the body to soften stool. Many medications such as diuretics prescribed for high blood pressure, will drain magnesium from the body and

eventually cause constipation. Dehydration is also a cause of constipation. Many people do not drink enough water, but instead, drink coffee and alcoholic drinks that dehydrate the body. The body needs about 2.5 litres of water every day in the summer. Sometimes Magnesium supplements will be essential to treat constipation. Eye contact is good for you Everyone from early mesmerists to contemporary selfhelp gurus have understood the power of looking someone deep in the eyes. Now, compelling new research is shedding light on the powerful positive effects of eye contact. In an age of disconnectedness, locking gazes with another person has surprising benefits. The study finds it makes us much more likely to engage in selfless, altruistic behavior. We are also more likely to remember details of the interaction with the other person and to appraise that person more positively. So why don’t we do it more

often? Eye contact can be painful because it makes us profoundly vulnerable. After all, direct eye contact creates a moment when we are both very visible, but we also have minimal control over what the other sees. Being behind a screen is much safer. That’s why many of us largely avoid eye contact by gazing at our phones – especially in awkward or intimate moments. We are used to hiding our feelings through careful curation of social media profiles and through various digital techniques of deferral and avoidance. When scrolling through our phones and feeds, we keep our minds

busy and, perhaps superficially, keep in touch with others. But in those moments we are also largely devoid of selfawareness – and that, according to this latest research, is essential to making true contact with another person. Of course, the internet is part of our lives now. We will never be able to go back to communicating exclusively face-to-face. Indeed, it is important to squeeze the most out of our personal interactions whenever possible – and that includes catching up with old friends online. But, thinking digital communication is enough to keep a rela-

tionship going is a fantasy. Interacting with friends online grants us greater control over the way they perceive us, and that can be reassuring. But if we retreat behind Snapchat videos, WhatsApp messages and Facebook posts, we lessen the possibility of an encounter that could teach us about one another and ourselves. Now that we know even more about the essential importance of a simple, unbroken gaze, we have even more reason to seek it out. Especially when meeting up with someone we care about, deep eye contact matters.

Computers are his hobby as well as his work so don’t be surprised to get an answer to your email in the early hours!

ADVICE: Morag was receiving messages from Yahoo about her browser being unsupported.

TIP: Ken wanted to know how to remove some Malware he had picked up.

Q A

Dear Richard, every time I log into my e-mails I get a pop up "important notice". This says Internet Explorer 8 will stop supporting this version of Yahoo mail from 5th June. What does this mean and what can I do about it? Regards Morag.

Hi Morag, it sounds like you are using Windows XP – is that right? If you are then the built in web browser is very old and this is why you are receiving this message from Yahoo – you need to move to a new web browser and consider whether you want to upgrade your computer given that Windows XP no longer is supported by Microsoft. The following is an article written on the subject that might give you a bit of a better understanding of the situation. www.bluemoonsolutions.es/armageddon-coming-to-a-windows-xp-machine-near-you

I have picked up a new web searcher somehow. It is called delta-search.com. I can’t find it in my list of progs.to delete it, and if I remove it from settings in google, it reappears again. I am using windows7, any ideas would be appreciated. Regards, Ken. Hi Ken, one of the best programs that I have used for getting rid of this type of Malware is MalwareBytes, you can download a free version of the software from www.malwarebytes.org - once downloaded, do a full scan of your computer and allow it to remove anything that it finds, that should sort your problem out.

Super Sailing

The recent second race day for the SAMM (Sailing Association Mar Menor) saw excellent conditions for sailing, with the first lap race being won by the Sirocco crew, followed by Quatro, and Conny in third place. The second race was interesting because the course was reversed and helms had to be aware of the submerged breakwater on their port side and choose on which tack to start. Six laps of really good sailing took place with the wind strengthening all the time. In the sec-

ond lap, Sirocco in the lead lost the plot and missed out a mark, costing time, which gave Quatro the opportunity to strike, and to take the second race from Conny in second, and Dos in third. Pictured are race winners from Quatro: - Tug Wilson, Diane Hardwick and Kerry Marlow, along with Sirocco's Julian Pering. The next racing event is this Sunday at Los Narejos. To find out more about SAMM and the race programme, go to their website www.sailingmarmenor.com.

The Big Swim

Sky Bet Championship Marc Marquez extended his lead of the MotoGP championship after winning the Aragon Grand Prix from pole position on Sunday. The former two-time champion fought back from fifth place following an early scare that almost cost him control of his Honda. Marquez passed Valentino Rossi to retake the lead for good on a curve with 12 laps to go. He then pulled away to win the 23-lap race at the five point one kilometre Aragon track in 41 minutes, 57 seconds. "I stayed calm and step by step I got a good rhythm," Marquez said about recovering from his steering mistake. "When I overtook Valentino I pushed for another two laps (until) I saw I was ahead." The Spaniard increased his lead to 248 points. Rossi, his nearest challenger, has 196 points with four races remaining. It was Marquez's 28th career win in the top category and his competition-leading fourth victory of the season. Jorge Lorenzo later overtook Yamaha teammate Rossi to finish second, crossing the finish line nearly three

seconds after Marquez. Meanwhile, Marc Marquez says he is not entertaining the notion that he could wrap up the 2016 MotoGP championship in the next round at Motegi in a fortnights’ time. A maximum of 100 points is available across the remaining four races, and there is an outside chance Marquez can win the championship in Japan. For that to happen, Marquez would have to win and Rossi finish 14th or lower, and Lorenzo finish off the podium. When asked about the prospect of winning the title at the first opportunity, Marquez said: "No, in Japan I will not win the championship. I would like to because it's Honda's home circuit, but I don't think so.” "We must wait, we need to be patient. We cannot make any mistakes.” "It's not important where, it's important to win. We must keep the same mentality.” "We know that Japan will be one circuit where maybe we are struggling a bit more, but we will arrive on other tracks that will be better for us."

A Good Sunday Run The Los Montesinos-based Monte Mentals walking football team hosted a friendly match recently against the brand new San Miguel Strollers side (pictured). The keenly contested match finished one-all, with the visitors

scoring towards the end of the first half, with the Mentals replying in the dying seconds of the encounter. To make San Miguel's day, the Mentals then treated their visitors to a hearty English breakfast at a local restaurant.

Gran Alacant hosts the eleventh running this Sunday morning of the Cross Popular Abel Antón, organised by the area’s European residents association, ASVEGA. The 10 kilometre course takes in the Sierra de Santa Pola, with the fastest time standing at just over 33 and a half minutes.

Ivie Davies on Golf

The King Is Dead Arnold Palmer, who died last Sunday at the age of 87, was without doubt the father of modern golf. Arnie (nicknamed The King), was a seven-time major winner who brought the sport to the masses and became the most beloved figure in the game, as a young Jack Nickalus (equally loved now) found out to his cost. When the Golden Bear started beating the great man in the sixties, he got short shrift from golf fans, who were unhappy to see their hero lose to a young upstart! There's been a non-stop list of deserved tributes that would keep everybody busy for weeks, like these words that sum the great man up from his biographer, James Dodson. “We loved him with a mythic American joy. He represented everything that is great about

golf. The friendship, the fellowship, the laughter, the impossibility of golf, the sudden rapture moment that brings you back, a moment that you never forget, that’s Arnold Palmer in spades. He’s the defining figure in golf.” No one did more to popularize the sport than Palmer. His dashing presence singlehandedly took golf out of the country clubs and into the mainstream. Quite simply, he made golf cool. “I used to hear cheers go up from the crowd around Palmer,” Lee Trevino said. “And I never knew whether he’d made a birdie or just hitched up his pants.” His fellow competitors revered him, and the next generation and the generation after that worshipped him. When reporters at the 1954 U.S. Amateur asked Gene Littler to identify the golfer

as slender as wire and as strong as cable cracking balls on the practice tee, Littler said: “That’s Arnold Palmer. He’s going to be a great player some day. When he hits the ball, the earth shakes.” Palmer attended Wake Forest on a golf scholarship. At age 24, he was selling paint and living in Cleveland, just seven months removed from a three-year stint in the Coast Guard, when he entered the national sporting consciousness by winning the 1954 U.S. Amateur at the Country Club of Detroit. “That victory was the turning point in my life,” he said. “It gave me confidence I could compete at the highest level of the game.” Palmer’s victory set in motion a chain of events. Instead of returning to selling paint, Palmer

played the next week in the Waite Memorial in Shawnee-on-Delaware, Pa., where he met Winifred Walzer, who would become his wife of 45 years until her death in 1999. On Nov. 17th, 1954, Palmer announced his intentions to turn pro, and golf would never be the same. In his heyday, Palmer famously swung as if he were coming out of his shoes. “What other people find in poetry, I find in the flight of a good drive,” Palmer said. He unleashed his corkscrew-swing motion, which produced a piercing draw, with the ferocity of a summer squall. In his inimitable swashbuckling style, Palmer succeeded with both power and putter. In a career that spanned more than six decades, he won 62 PGA

Up For The Cup One of best sporting events around, the Ryder Cup, gets going today at Hazeltine National Golf club, as every two years, it brings together t h e might of USA and Europe, locking horns in a great contest where fortunes can change dramatically. The Americans, under captain Davis Love III, have been meticulous in their preparations and appear to have

several factors in their favour

as they striven to end a remarkable run by the

Europeans over the past two decades. Holders Europe have won three consecutive Ryder Cups, and eight of the last 10, through a mixture of shrewd captaincy, consistently good team chemistry, often stellar play and an uncanny knack of sinking key putts at crucial moments. This weekend, however, they will field six rookies in their 12-man team while the Americans have just two Cup debutants in the shape of Brooks Koepka and Ryan Moore, who lost out to Rory McIlroy in Sunday's Tour Championship play-off in Atlanta. "We didn't really look at rookies versus experience," Love told reporters when asked if his more seasoned

team held any advantage over Europe. "We looked at adding to our team to build the best that we could. While Europe are happy to embrace the underdog tag on U.S. soil, their captain Darren Clarke has complete faith in the ability of his six rookies to thrive in the pressure cooker atmosphere of a Ryder Cup. "It's unquestionable that it's going to be a very, very big task ahead of us," said the 48-year-old Northern Irishman, a veteran of five Ryder Cups as a player. "You'd have to say America would be favourites ... if you're going to look off world rankings, etc. But it's 12 guys against 12 guys in match play, and anything can happen. Bring it on!

Tour titles from 1955 to 1973, placing him fifth on the Tour’s all-time victory list. He collected seven major titles in a six-plusyear explosion, from the 1958 Masters to the 1964 Masters. Even Palmer’s setbacks were epic. He doublebogeyed the 18th hole at Augusta in the 1961 Masters after accepting congratulations from a spectator whom he knew in the gallery. Palmer lost playoffs in three U.S. Opens, the first to Jack Nicklaus in 1962; the second to Julius Boros in 1963; and the third to Billy Casper in 1966 in heartbreaking fashion. Palmer blew a seven-stroke lead with nine holes to go in regulation at Olympic Club and lost to Casper in an 18-hole playoff the next day. It was Palmer who convinced his colleagues that

they could never consider themselves champions unless they had won the Claret Jug. Nick Faldo, during Palmer’s farewell at St. Andrews in 1995, may have put it best when he said, “If Arnold hadn’t come here in 1960, we’d probably all be in a shed on the beach.” Mark O’Meara went a step further. “He made it possible for all of us to make a living in this game,” he said. As a measure of his popularity, Palmer, like Elvis Presley before him, was known simply as “The King.” But in a life bursting from the seams with success, Palmer never lost his common touch. He was a man of the people, willing to sign every autograph, shake every hand, and tried to look every person in his gallery in the eye. A true sporting great on every scale that you could use to measure.

Almoradi’s Battling Win

Five Goal Thriller

REDOVAN CF 3 CD THADER 2 CREVILLENTE 1 CD ALMORADI 2 Almoradi picked up their second victory of the season (despite their pink kit!), and like at Torrevieja in their opener, it was on the road against a local side. For Crevillente it was their first home defeat of the campaign, as a battling Almoradi side took their second half chances, with Josete frustrating Crevillente’s forwards in goal. The main action was in the second half after a first period low on scoring oppor-

tunities for both teams. Almoradi took the lead from the penalty spot after Del Cueto was brought down in the 57th minute, with Coco converting. Eight minutes later, Crevillente keeper Oscar should have done better from a cross/cum shot from Saul that went into the back of the net. The two goal defecit spurred Crevillente into action with Josete earning his fee by making a string of

vital saves to keep his side in front, but he could not do anything about Seral’s low shot that hit the net in the 78th minute. Crevillente laid virtually siege on the Almoradi goal for the remainder of the match, but to no avail, as Fran Rodríguez’s side came away with all three points. Almoradi lie 14th in the table with eight points, and now entertain Paterna this Sunday with a 6.00 pm kickoff. Crevillente go to

Villarreal C this Sunday lunchtime. Elsewhere in the Valencian third division, new Orihuela manager José Manuel Roca saw the usual response from a side with a new boss, as they handed out a four-nil away thrashing to Almazora. Orihuela now entertain Recambios Colon on Sunday, whilst Elche Ilicitano go to Rayo Ibense, after drawning nil-nil at home to leaders Olimpic Xativa at the weekend.

A Point At Last!

CD TORREVIEJA 1 HUESCA 1 CD Torrevieja picked up their first point of the season last Sunday after a period of great uncertainty on and off the pitch, mixed in with a lack of communication which left Torry supporters bemused. After the resignation of Gabriel Correa, the club said that a new appointment would be made “within hours”, but no news was forthcoming. Supporters rolled up on Sunday to spot to the return of Pedreño, who was shown the door after last season, along with his assistant, the ex-Torry player, Carrasco. Both men were in the

Nelson Mandela stadium stands, ahead of official clearance from the Valencian FA to take over, yet the club issued no briefing for the benefit of the fans either on the night, or in the days leading up to the game. Instead, the club were quick to rubbish claims from some players that there was a rift between them and the board, which were published on a football website. All rather strange! On the playing side, changes had been going on last week, with recently signed Vazquez and Belforti

both on their bikes, whilst a new keeper from Guinea, Buba, made his debut, along with youngster Damian coming into the Torry line-up. More departures are in the pipeline. Damian, who was restricted to just 45 minutes under previous boss Correa, had a cracking match, with Matheus also in fine form. Torry deservedly took the lead in the 20th minute when a cross from Pablo Navas saw Matheus rising perfectly to direct the ball into the corner of the net. He almost made it two when he burst past three defenders, then lobbed the keeper as he advanced out of his area, as Torry were dominant in the first half. Novelda were a tougher proposition in the second half, and despite a good debut performance from Buba in the Torry goal, the visitors levelled up deservedly as a cross was rifled home by Jordi in the 80th minute, despite brave Buba doing his best to keep it out. Both sides went all out for the winner, and right at the end, a weak referee failed to give Torry a penalty when Lewis Allen was flattened in the box. A different spirit was shown by Torry and they will need it at sec-

Murada Fight Back CD Benijofar looked good for two wins from their first two matches this season, as they took a two-nil lead at CD Murada last Saturday with goals from Eliot in the fifth minute, and Miguel in the 62nd minute. The home side

rallied with a couple of strikes within seven minutes through Jorge and Rosendo, to set up an exciting last quarter of an hour of the match, with the visitors having to settle for a point in a two-all draw. Benijofar have a blank

weekend coming up in the regional group 16 division, but CD Montesinos are back in play after losing their opener at Benijofar. Monte’s next opponents happen to be Murada this Sunday afternoon, with a 5.00 pm kick-off.

ond-placed Ontinyent this Sunday with a 6.00 pm kickoff at the El Clariano stadium.

Both teams played attractive high tempo football in last Sunday’s encounter, but the breakthrough came after a scruffy bout of play by Redovan down the left, and Miguel tried to clear the ball but it hit straight off the Redovan striker Roy, and left him one on one with Kevin. Roy kept his cool and tucked the ball away to put Redovan ahead. Thader though levelled up five minutes from the interval, as after a good move down the left, Dani Lucas squared the ball to Lloyd who drove the ball home from the edge of the box. The second half continued to be entertaining, but the referee, García Noales, made his mark after an hour. He missed a blatant foul by Joaquín on defender Adri,

and then a handball by the same player, who put the ball past Kevin to put the home side back in the lead. Minutes later, he sent Redovan midfielder Edu off with a straight red card after a mistimed challenge that probably deserved a caution. Thader, with a one man advantage, got their equaliser with 15 minutes remaining, as Lloyd blasted the ball into net for his second of the match. A draw seemed likely but Redovan got an injury time winner after the Thader penalty area saw the ball bobbling all over the place, only for Guille, who came on as a substitute in the 89th minute, to hit the winner. Thader are now away to Benferri this Sunday afternoon.

HOME AND AWAY Neymar put aside worries of a date in Spain's High Court as he scored twice in Barcelona's romp last Saturday at Sporting Gijon as Barca were without the injured Lionel Messi, while Andres Iniesta and Ivan Rakitic were on the bench. Barca coach, Luis Enrique, said the score was flattering: - "The game was not a true 5-0, as it was much tighter than that. At 2-0, Sporting made us suffer and a goal from them then would have complicated the match". Barcelona are now a point behind leaders Real Madrid and go to Celta Vigo this Sunday evening.

Barcelona came from a goal down to beat Borussia Monchengladbach to make it two wins out of two in this season's Champions League. Barca, who beat Celtic 7-0 in their opening Group C game, trailed to Thorgan Hazard's opener in Germany on Wednesday night. Substitute Arda Turan fired in the equaliser before Gerard Pique bundled in the winner for the La Liga Champions.

Barnsleys Wright Is Wrong A late goal from Las Palmas striker Sergio Araujo pegged back Real Madrid to a draw, which sees their lead at the top the table pegged back to one point. Benzema could have sealed all three points in injury time, whilst Ronaldo was substituted, walking off the field in a sulk. "We had controlled the game, but you have to play until the end. Sometimes football is cruel," said Real coach Zinedine Zidane. "Playing like that over 90 minutes, we will be at the top, no doubt about it" Real are at home Eibar this Sunday afternoon.

Ex-Chelsea forward Andre Schurrle hit a late 87th minute equaliser on Tuesday as Borussia came from behind to draw with Real Madrid in their Champions League Group F encounter. Real took the lead through Cristiano Ronaldo's drilled finish after Gareth Bale's back heeled pass. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang levelled after keeper Keylor Navas's error, but Raphael Varane restored Real's lead before Schurrle's thumping strike.

Ozil Eyes Shock Exit

Barnsley have suspended assistant manager Tommy Wright after he was named in a Daily Telegraph investigation alleging corruption in football. Wright is filmed apparently being given an envelope of money in return for allegedly helping persuade Barnsley to sign players from a fake Far East firm. The newspaper claims he accepted £5,000 at a meeting in Leeds in August. The Championship club say he has been suspended "pending an internal investigation into these allegations". The Daily Telegraph's investigation involved Wright being introduced to members of the Far East firm, who were undercover reporters, by two football agents. "I can just recommend players to you that I've gone and seen, and you will have to do your spicy dealing, whatever you do," Wright is filmed saying during one of a number of meetings. Wright says "you know where I live" when the subject of giving him money is raised.

La Liga Orders… A penalty taken by José Gómez Campaña secured the Segunda division leaders all three points just two minutes into the second half last Saturday. Elche should have gone into the interval in the lead after a level first period, when in the 43rd minute Guillermo was unable to beat Raul Fernandez, after being set up by a great pass from Álex Fernández. After the restart, Pelegrín fouled in the Elche box, and Campaña converted the spot kick which gave Levante more confidence in the second half but they were happy to soak up any pressure from the Ilicitanos who didn't really create a great chance to level the score, despite having a lot of the possession. Elche's next match is at Alcorcon tomorrow evening.

Recent reports had suggested that the German penned a bumper contract extension that will see him stay at the Emirates well beyond 2018. Ozil, who was part of the Gunners side that beat Basle 2-0 in the Champions League last night, has been instrumental in the past couple of seasons. However, according to German paper Sport Bild, Ozil is hoping for a return to Real Madrid. Real sold Ozil to Arsenal for £42.5m three years ago. The report suggests the whole saga surrounding his future at Arsenal has given him food for thought. It is believed Real would be one of the only realistic options for Ozil, as Bayern Munich chairman KarlHeinz Rummenigge is not a fan of his.

La Liga are calling the shots on Spain’s top clubs to makes their venues look better as part of getting more money out of broadcasting contrasts, and that includes making sure that the pitches look green. That has meant giving a lick of paint to some of the more run-down stadiums, moving spectators to certain areas to ensure they are in camera shot, brightening up advertising hoardings and even making the grass greener on the fields. And it's all about the look, beyond the silky skills of La Liga superstars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

RESCUES MAN CITY S R E G RONDD OUT! A

Pep’s Run Is Over

Celtic claimed their first Champions League Group C point as Pep Guardiola's perfect record in charge of Manchester City was ended with a draw in Glasgow on Wednesday. The hosts led twice in the first half, Moussa Dembele diverting in Erik Sviatchenko's header and Kieran Tierney forcing an own goal by Raheem Sterling. Fernandinho's strike brought City level first time and Sterling showed composure to net the visitors' second. Nolito equalised for the visitors again after Dembele had netted on the turn. City boss Guardiola said the draw was a valuable lesson and that qualification for the Champions League knockout stage may go to the final game of Group C. Guardiola said: “Maybe this is a good lesson for our future on the importance of starting well. They scored three goals but didn’t have many chances. We created enough to win the game. When the fourth team in the pot is Celtic you realise immediately how tough it is to qualify for the next round. City now have a home and away double header against Guardiola’s former side Barcelona, who lead the group with six points. “Against Barça it will be tough but now we analyse what we did, of course we are now second, we are going to recover well and we have time to think about Barça,” addded Guardiola. Brendan Rodgers’ side had lost 7-0 at Barcelona on the first matchday so the manager could take pride in the result. “Collectively we were very good. Our team and the crowd made it a very difficult night for City.”

Ramsey Ruled Out

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey is out of Wales' squad for October's World Cup qualifiers against Austria and Georgia because of a hamstring injury. Ramsey, 25, has not played since suffering the injury on the opening weekend of the Premier League season. Midfielder Jonny Williams has returned to light training with loan club Ipswich but is lacking match fitness and is also not included. Shaun MacDonald has been called up, but George Williams is left out. The Euro 2016 semi-finalists started their World Cup qualifying campaign with a 4-0 win over Moldova in September and play Austria on October 6th followed by Georgia in Cardiff three days later. Ramsey was Wales' outstanding player at Euro 2016, but was suspended for the 2-0 semi-final defeat by Portugal.

Green It Up Now! 'The problem with Spain,' Adolfo Bara, the Spanish league's marketing director, said, 'is that it's really hot in summer. If you look, in September in some of the stadiums, the grass was yellow. We now talk to the clubs on how the groundkeepers must make sure it is proper green.' If clubs comply with the new audio-visual rules, then they have a chance to get more money out of Spain's new TV broadcasting contracts, which gives the smaller teams a greater share of overall revenue, compared to previous years when Real Madrid and Barcelona hogged the earnings.

This Week´s Premier Preview The weekend starts tonight with as fifthplaced Everton take on reborn Crystal Palace, the Eagles having soared up to seventh, three wins on the spin now for P a r d e w ’s pleasers, writes JOHN MCGREGOR. The Toffees tasted their f i r s t defeat this season at Bournemouth last weekend, and quickly need to get back to winning ways. Oh, and it gets even better tomorrow morning as the team-most-likely-to-stopCity – that’s Liverpool b.t.w. – travel to stuttering Swansea, who once again have managerial problems. In the resurgent Red corner of Merseyside, Kop King Klopp’s kids are thrilling their fans again with allaction performances: sixteen goals in six is still two behind slick City, but the exciting football Liverpool are serving up, is envious for most Premier clubs –

and us neutrals. This weekend’s top match sees Tottenham entertaining max-pointsso-far marauding Man City at White Hot Lane. Onceweak-at-the-back spirited Spurs have only conceded three goals in six matches, but of course City are bangin’ em in from everywhere with 18 in their six games. Spurs new Son is deputising nicely for injured Harry Kane, the South Korean’s brace won it last week for Tottenham, and then did it yet again with the Moscow winner on Tuesday in the Champions League. So who’ll be smiling come Sunday night – City’s attack or Spurs defence? Absolutely nothing is going right for David Moyes and Sunderland. Latest example: 20 minutes to go, leading 2 – 0 at home with two Jermaine Defoe goals, the Black Cats were clawed back to lose 3 - 2 to Palace in injury time. Must-get-something home to West Brom this Saturday, eh, Dave? Only

one point better – that’s with two b.t.w.– are Stoke, with their usual excuse note of always starting late beginning to wear thin for boss Mark Hughes, with plenty of talent which is not gelling. Away to resurgentof-late Man United looks like a dangerous place to begin a revival, but you’ve got to start somewhere. Who’d be the manager of hugely disappointing West Ham, then? Poor old Slaven Bilic, what with three points from six games, plus a huge new stadium to fill – that’s the script, but his players aren’t reading it. Middlesborough haven’t started much better with only five and visit the Olympic – sorry the L o n d o n Stadium – tomorrow. That’s a sixpointer if ever there was one!

PHIL’S TASK The United States have adopted Europe's approach to the Ryder Cup to end a run of three defeats, says Phil Mickelson. The 46-yearold, who is playing in his 11th event, has been part of a "task-force" set up to build a longterm US programme for the biennial tournament. "Players, past captains, vicecaptains and caddies have been involved in the process - like the model Europe have had tremendous success with," he said. This year's three-day competition starts this afternoon at Hazeltine National in Minnesota.

WHAT A SHAMBLES Makes you proud, doesn’t it? Five minutes after starting English football’s top job, Sam Allardyce is sacked by the FA for improper conduct, writes JOHN MCGREGOR. We all laughed about Sepp Blatter, and now the joke’s on us. Obviously the kudos from being the England boss and the money that went with it was not enough for Allardyce. Besides Allardyce’s poor behaviour, the press comes out with little credit. They were the ones who were creeping round big (fraud) Sam as soon as he got the job, before he fell for the undercover sting. That sort of gutter-press journalism you would expect from the Red Tops, but in this sad case, the respected Daily Telegraph was the whistle-blower. Well done boys for revealing that Sam is bent, as nobody comes out with any credit here. What’s next after Southgate has finished minding the store? Steve Bruce? Jurgen Klinsmann? In the crazy world of English football anything could happen, but it’s to be hoped that whoever gets the whitehot seat is squeaky clean and can clearly spot a set-up a mile away.
