Top Romantic Getaways For Valentines Day Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to tell someone just how special they are. However, if you, like me, are a great believer that actions speak louder than words, why not whisk your beloved away to one of these ultra romantic Valentine destinations….

By Heidi Wardman

Cape Town, South Africa

9

Cape Town is the second most densely populated city of South Africa with an estimated population of 3.74 million people, closely following Johannesburg; as well as being the provincial capital of the Western Cape. The city is famous for its extensive harbour, as well as the beautiful flora and fauna of the Cape floral kingdom, which features over 19 different varieties of plant life. Cape Town is Africa's most popular tourist destination, with popular attractions including Table Mountain and Cape Point. Table Mountain takes its name from the huge level plateau that makes up its surface, and spans approximately 3 kilometres to the cliff’s edge. An extremely impressive sight, the plateau, lies between Devil's Peak to the east and Lion's Head to the west, forming an amazing backdrop to Cape Town below. All of this makes Cape Town the perfect local to escape in your own dreamy world. During your stay in Cape Town, you should take the opportunity to join the locals in the Roman ritual of Lupercalia. This is an ancient profession of endless love, where women pin the name of their lover on their sleeves, hence where the saying “wearing your heart on your sleeve” originated from.

8

Maui, Hawaii

The island of Maui is the second-largest of the Hawaiian Islands, at 727.2 square miles and 17th largest island in the United States. It has always been a popular tourist destination and won several awards within the Travel Industry, although the number of visitors increased rapidly after it was recently nominated “Best Island in the World.” The huts and cottages which are situated near the beach are the best option when booking accommodation, providing the perfect holiday hideaway. Top tourist spots in Maui include the Hāna Highway, Haleakalā National Park, and Lahaina. Anyone taking a trip along the Hāna Highway can expect to take in sights of expansive mountain ranges, black sandy beaches and waterfalls. Haleakalā National Park surrounds the looming volcano “Haleakalā”, which has thankfully remained dormant since around 1600 AD. Meanwhile, Lahaina is the place to go if you are in search of night life, with a multitude of shops and restaurants leading down to a wharf where lovers can hop on a romantic sunset cruise and take in the island by night.

Honolulu, Hawaii

7

Honolulu is the capital and most vibrant city of Hawaii. Famous for its beautiful golden beaches, soothing tropical breeze and relaxing rush of waves against the shoreline, Honolulu is an idyllic spot for lovers. Although you will not be disappointed with any area of the city, Waikīkī is one of the most impressive, and favoured by tourists. Nestled between the Ala Wai Canal and Diamond Head, Waikīkī is home to a variety of hotels, shops, and buzzing night life, the majority of which can be found lining the endless Kalakaua and Kuhio Avenues. In spite of being one of the most famous in the world, Waikīkī beach is fairly small, with half of the bathing area reserved for surfing. And if you fancy wrestling the waves, then this is certainly the place to come, with long rolling breaks just waiting to give surf bums their perfect ride. All of this combined with traditional aromatic foods and rich culture will help to give you that loving feeling this Valentine’s Day.

6

A complete contrast to Honolulu but no less beautiful, a visit to Reykjavik will give you plenty of reasons to snuggle up. It is the capital and largest city in Iceland, and with over 100 different bars and and dance clubs to choose from, often referred to as “the nightlife capital of the north”. Like the Spanish, the natives tend to venture out quite late, so although things might look a bit deserted at first, things will soon liven up. This is because alcohol is fairly expensive to purchase in bars, so people tend to have a few cheeky drinks at home first. This is a good plan for tourists too, who can save a fortune by purchasing a few cans from the supermarket as opposed to a pint in the local- when in Rome as they say! Once out on the town you are well advised to wrap up warm, as average temperatures for February lie at around -2.5. However, they do say that the coldest of nights can set in the warmest of hearts….

Reykjavik, Iceland

Churchill, Manitoba

5

Churchill lies on the shore of Hudson Bay in Manitoba, Canada. It is nicknamed the “Polar Bear Capital of the World” as large groups of the amazing creatures can be seen migrating toward the shore from inland during the autumn. This has made it a very popular destination for tourists, who are able to get pretty close to the bears using specially modified buses known as “tundra buggies”. October and early November are the best times to view the bears, although guided tours will take visitors closer to their homes, or habits, at other times of the year when polar bears can be found both on land and swimming in the sea. It is the starry skies over the Hudson Bay which make it the perfect setting for lovers, and witnessing the beauty of the Northern Lights together is an experience which you will never forget.

Valentine, Nebraska

4

A guide to the world’s top Valentine’s Day destinations would not be complete without a listing for the city of Valentine in the US state of Nebraska. Valentine takes its name from Edward K. Valentine, a congressman from Nebraska, who made it his mission to get local settlers' grievances acknowledged by the federal government during the late nineteenth century. Today, Valentine is more often referred to by its nickname “Heart City”, and the name alone should be enough to put you in the mood for love. Nebraska lies at the centre of a network of tranquil lakes, grassy sand hills, secluded waterfalls, a national forest, two national wildlife refuges, huge authentic ranches, which are home to REAL cowboys, and one of the ten best canoeing rivers in the United States. You will never be stuck for something to do, and by rounding off the day’s adventures with a romantic meal at night, you are guaranteed an unforgettable Valentine’s Day 2013.

3 New York City, New York

New York is the most densely populated city in the US, offering endless opportunities to thrill-seeking lovers. New York truly has something to offer to everyone, from arts and culture to thumping nightlife. It is packed with bars and restaurants to satisfy any budget, from fine dining in exclusive restaurants to delicious snacks served by one of 4 000 mobile food vendors in the city. Major attractions include the Empire State Building; Statue of Liberty; Ellis Island; Broadway Theatre productions; Museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Times Square; the Manhattan Chinatown; or why not treat your lover to a date in shopping heaven, with a visit to fifth and Madison Avenues. A trip to New York City would not be complete without a date in Manhattan’s famous Central Park, where lovers can spend hours wondering around the 843 acres of idyllic parkland. Depending on the weather conditions, ice skating or boating on the lake will provide you both with an unforgettable Valentine’s Day memory.

Venice, Italy

2

Venice is often referred to as one of the most romantic cities in the world, making it a top destination for lovers. Located in northeast Italy, Venice lies across a collection of 118 small islands, which are separated by canals and linked by bridges. There is a wealth of sites to explore, including the unique landscape, beautiful architecture, rich musical and artistic cultural heritage. What could be more romantic than floating along the rippling lagoons with your Valentine, sipping cocktails and cava? There are endless opportunities to take in the sights along the way, and a plethora of Bars and Restaurants where you can sample the delicious Italian cuisine, including home made pastas, pizzas and succulent meats.

1 Paris, France

For the ultimate Valentine’s weekend, you simply have to head to Paris- it isn’t called the “City of Love” for nothing after all! With so many breathtaking sights to take in and put you in the mood for romance, Paris is the best place to escape reality and become totally absorbed in each other. What could be more romantic than viewing the capital city from the top of the Eiffel Tower, a picnic by the side of the River Seine, or walking hand in hand along the famous Champs-Élysées, taking in the multitude of shops and attractions en route? Whilst in Paris, why not treat your lover to a wild night at the world famous Moulin Rouge cabaret-dancehall, finished off with a delicious meal in one of the city’s fine dining establishments. And to really make an impression, you could always wow your lover by brushing up on a few phrases from the language of love, such as “Toujours dans mon cœur” which means “Always in my heart” or “Pour toujours et à jamais” meaning "Forever and always". Ooh-la-la !!!

The Jungle Drums

s r e v L o f y O a e D h C elebra ting t By Heidi Wardman People will be getting all loved up, all over the world, during the month of February, and its all down to one bloke! The tradition of St. Valentine's Day was founded by the early Christian Saints, and originally known as Valentinus. Legend has it that Saint Valentine was imprisoned for adopting a minister’s role and performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry, as well as other Christians who had been persecuted under the Roman Empire. During his spell in prison, St Valentine is believed to have healed the daughter of his Guard, Asterius, and prior to his execution, wrote “from your Valentine” to her, by means of goodbye. The day still remains an official feast day among many religions, although is more commonly celebrated as a day of lovers. This connection was forged by Geoffrey Chaucer and other Poets of the middle ages, and by the 15th century, was widely observed as a date when lovers expressed their feelings for each other. Gifts and greetings cards are now traditionally exchanged on Valentine’s Day, and symbols such as hearts, doves, and winged cupid’s associated with the anniversary. Valentine’s Day is the only special day which is celebrated all over the world, with equal volumes of spirit and love. In the UK alone, just under half of the population send cards and gifts on Valentine’s Day, with a whopping 1.3 billion pounds being forked out each year. Manufacturers and retailers have capitalised on the opportunity to increase sales, by producing all manner of commemorative gifts to mark the occasion including Valentine edition roses; chocolates packed in a red satin, heart-shaped box; and diamonds for girls who are particularly lucky! Restaurants have also cashed in on the date, by offering special Valentine’s Day Menus with a romantic theme. It is not only lovers that can celebrate Valentine’s Day. Those who have had their sights set on a special someone may take advantage of the day to let them know how they feel. Some even choose to send anonymous cards to their dream dates, and hope that they might receive one back! The use of the internet in sending cards and messages of love, either anonymous or otherwise, has also grown increasingly popular, with an estimated 15 million e-cards being sent last year. However, this trend has also attracted criticism by some people, who regard Valentine’s Day as a gimmick meant for boosting sales, rather than the day of lovers which it always was.

Faacts Quirky Valentine F

Here are a few weird and wonderful facts which you may not have known about St Valentine’s Day.

1. This is the world’s second most profitable celebration in terms of card sales, only beaten by Christmas, with an estimated £22 million being spent in the UK every year. 2. As many as 141 million Valentine’s Cards are sent worldwide. 3. Pet owners also take advantage of the opportunity to tell their furry friends how much they love them, with around 9 million people buying their pets a present on Valentine’s Day. 4. 53% of women end their relationships with their partners for not buying them a present for Valentine’s Day. 5. During 2012, 198 million roses were produced to commemorate Valentine’s Day, with 110 million red roses being sold and delivered within a period of just 3 days. 6. The first Valentine’s box of chocolates was produced by UK Manufacturer Cadbury’s during the early 1800’s. 7. People who break up with their partners, or lose someone close, are advised by Psychologists to eat chocolate, as it is believed to offer comfort and take away the pain. 8. The tradition of writing kisses as “xxx” on the bottom of greetings cards originated with Valentine’s cards. It was particularly used by those giving anonymous cards, who would sign their name with an “X” and often kiss the spot as a demonstration of their love and sincerity. 9. The ancient Romans had their own version of Valentine’s Day, which was also celebrated on February 14 and known as Lupercalia. The celebration usually involved a lavish feast, which was enjoyed in honour of Juno, the Queen of Roman God and Goddesses. 10. In mediaeval times, young women would eat a variety of dream inducing foods on Valentine’s Day, particularly dairy products, which were designed to help them dream about their future husband.

Getting Fruity in the Name of Beauty

by Heidi Wardman

You’ve heard all about how important it is to eat your 5-a-day, but you may not have considered the beauty benefits of rubbing your favourite fruit and veg on your skin…. It is a well-known fact that both fruits and vegetables are absolutely crammed full with all of the antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that our bodies need to stay fit and healthy, including vitamins A, B, C, D and E, carotenoids, co enzyme Q 10, phytonutrients, polyphenols, potassium, selenium, and zinc. However, these do not only have amazing health benefits on the inside, but can also give us a radiant glow when applied to the skin. When combined with various basic ingredients, fruits and vegetables can be used to create extremely effective face masks, moisturisers, bath treatments and ointments. Plus, as they are made from all natural ingredients you are less likely to experience any irritation, even if you’re skin is super sensitive. Fruits are the best ingredients for producing luxurious facial masks, silky skin creams, cosmetics and antiaging products, with avocados, bananas, berries, cantaloupe melons, grapes, lemons, oranges, peaches, and pineapple being the ideal varieties. Meanwhile, vegetables including carrots, cucumbers, greens, peppers, tomatoes and even the noble spud can have a place in your skin care regime.

Check out our A to Z guide to the best fruit and vegetable inner and outer beauty heroes: Avocado - This versatile fruit is packed with nutrients, including B vitamins, vitamin E and vitamin K; also with high fibre content. However, in terms of nutrition, it is best known as a rich source of monounsaturated fat, which has been found to reduce blood cholesterol levels. As far as beauty benefits go, the oils in avocados will help the skin to stay moist and boost its own collagen production. Banana - These are an excellent source of vitamin B6, soluble fibre, also containing a source of vitamin C, manganese and potassium. Consumption of bananas has been linked with a reduced risk of renal cell carcinoma, colorectal cancer and breast cancer. Their natural oils work wonders as skin softeners, while the rich vitamins and nutrients will drastically improve the hair’s elasticity, making it look more radiant and less prone to splitting and breaking. Beans - Eat these if you are searching for ever-lasting youth! Learn to love all types of beans, as they are known to fend off the first signs of aging. Furthermore, these magical seeds will help to keep you regular, and thus reduce bloating, due to the high fibre content. Beans are also high in protein, complex carbohydrates, folate and iron.

Health Benefits

7 Health Benefits of Tuna:

1. Cardiovascular Health: The omega-3 fatty acids in tuna are responsible for a long list of cardiovascular benefits. Omega-3s help the cardiovascular system by aiding in the prevention of irregular heart rhythms, making blood clots less likely, and improving the ratio of good (HDL) cholesterol. 2. Eye Health: The high levels of omega-3 essential fatty acids in tuna offer substantial protection against

macular degeneration (AMD) of the eye, a condition in which fine vision deteriorates. 3. Cancer Prevention: Studies suggest tuna protects against cancer in the ovaries, pancreas, and every part of the digestive tract including the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, and colon. Eating fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as tuna, may also help protect against breast cancer and lower the risk of leukemia, multiple myeloma, and non-hodgkins lymphoma.

Berries - These juicy little fruits are bursting with antioxidants and micronutrients, including vitamins C and K, as well as the mineral manganese, whilst their skin is a source of dietary fibre. Blueberries, blackberries and raspberries contain their own natural anti-inflammatory properties, and when applied to the skin can help to soothe the surface layers and repair cells. Cantaloupe - Melons make an ideal snack, being low in Saturated Fat and Sodium, and very low in Cholesterol. This means that they are also incredibly low in calories! Melons are also a great source of dietary fibre, potassium, vitamins A, C and the B complex. Cantaloupe melons not only taste great, but the flesh can be used to create a wonderfully soothing skin cream that ensures a radiant and glowing complexion. Carrot - the bright orange colour is due to the high levels of betacarotene, which can help the metabolism of vitamin A. Beta- carotene is great for the skin, helping to smooth away rough patches, although apply sparingly as too much can leave you looking like you’ve just been tangoed. Carrots are known to be rich in dietary fibre, antioxidants, and minerals, whilst the roots are used in holistic therapy to treat digestive problems, intestinal parasites, and tonsillitis. Cucumber - These contain no saturated fats or cholesterol and are very low in calories. The skin provides a good source of dietary fibre, and flesh contains a variety of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Cucumbers have been used as part of a beauty regime for decades, as they are believed to reduce dark circles beneath the eyes. Grapes - As well as being great sources of dietary fibre, and vitamins C and K, grapes contain a variety of phytochemicals such as resveratrol, which researchers have linked to inhibiting cancer, heart disease, degenerative nerve disease, viral infections and Alzheimer's disease. They also help to hydrate hair and skin to keep you looking radiant. So go on, pour yourself another glass of wine! Lemon - whilst these might be the smallest citrus fruits, lemons contain more health benefits than oranges and grapefruits. They are low in calories, with no saturated fats or cholesterol and a source of dietary fibre. They also contain high levels of vitamins C and A, and flavonoids including alpha and beta-carotene, which are known for their antioxidant qualities. In hair and skin care, lemons act as a natural bleach and softener, useful in treating rough patches on elbows, knees, or feet. They can also treat uneven skin tone, and make skin softer and more supple. Peaches - These are a good source of dietary fibre, vitamins C and A, Niacin and Potassium, although their sister fruit, the nectarine, have slightly higher volumes of each. They are also crammed with antioxidants, which combine to protect the skin from the sun’s damaging UV rays, making them a particularly good choice for those of us who live in the sun.

Peppers - these funky little fruits are chock full of vitamins and nutrients, with red and yellow varieties having higher levels than green. Peppers are a source of the antioxidant, lycopene, whilst red and yellow varieties also contain beta- carotene, and are a very rich source of vitamin C. A large red pepper contains 209 mg of vitamin C, which is three times the amount found in an average orange. Peppers help to improve circulation, and in relation to cosmetics, are added to lipsticks and glosses to help plump up the lips- who needs bottox! Pineapple - when served raw, pineapple is an excellent source manganese and vitamin C. It also contains the proteolytic enzyme, bromelain, which helps to break down protein and thus aids digestion. The same enzyme has great benefits to the skin, as it helps to eliminate dead cells, whilst protecting the surface from damaging free radicals. Potato - These are the most versatile plants available, and contain nearly all of the nutrients required for life. In fact, human beings can actually survive on a diet consisting of only potatoes; supplemented with milk or butter, which contributes the two vitamins A and D, which potatoes lack. In beauty terms, potatoes help to alleviate dark circles underneath the eyes, leaving you looking bright eyes and bushy tailed once again. Strawberries - Not only deliciously tasty, strawberries are low in calories, cholesterol, saturated fat and sodium (unless you can’t resist the cream that is!) They are also abundant in vitamin C, with large quantities of manganese, folate and potassium too. What’s more, by eating strawberries, you are also doing your teeth a favour, as they are known to be a natural tooth whitener. So eat strawberries and smile to your heart’s content! Tomatoes - These are extremely popular fruits, especially in Mediterranean countries such as Spain and Italy; and why not, when they are so good for you! Their consumption is believed to benefit the heart, among other organs, as well as protecting the bones from osteoporosis. Tomatoes contain the carotene, lycopene, among other powerful natural antioxidants, along with vitamins C and A. This combination of ingredients helps to protect the skin by fighting free radicals, whilst also boosting collagen production to keep it looking young and fresh. Watermelon - These enormous fruits contain only around 6% sugar and 92% water by weight, so are completely fat free and excellent at improving hydration levels. Watermelon is a great source of vitamin C, also containing a significant volume of beta-carotene. When applied to the skin, it can help to soothe sunburn and repair minor skin damage by stimulating tissue regeneration. Whether eaten or applied externally as creams, masks and oils, it is evident that Mother Nature still has the upper hand when it comes to our health and beauty choices. So grab yourself a nice bowl of fruit salad and start creating!

of Tuna

4. Cognitive Benefits: Omega-3 fatty acids may help lessen cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease by promoting a healthy blood supply to the brain and reducing the types of lesions so commonly found in patients suffering the ravages of Alzheimer's.

5. Mood Lifter: A diet high in tuna may improve your mood and save you stress. The EPA of Omega-3 fatty acids improves flow of blood and may affect both hormones and the immune syste.

6. Improved Insulin Response: Tuna is of particular benefit to people who suffer from type 2 diabetes, due to its high content of omega-3 fats. 7. Promotes Detoxification: Along with its omega-3s, the selenium contained in tuna is a crucial element in the production of glutathione peroxidase. This important antioxidant is critical for a healthy liver, the organ responsible for detoxifying and ridding the body of harmful compounds.

Dark Chocolate & Salted Caramel Tart Method 1. To make the pastry, heat the oven to 200C/fan 180C/ gas 6. Whizz the flour, sugar and cocoa in a processor. Add the butter and whizz until breadcrumbs. Add the egg yolks and vanilla essence and whizz to a dough. Put the dough on a plate and press into a disc. Wrap and chill for 30 minutes. Roll out the pastry and line a deep 20cm tart tin with it; patch any holes if crumbly. Cover and chill for at least 30 minutes. 2. The African Daisy The African Daisy, known as Osteospermum, originated, as the name suggests, in Africa and later came to the southern parts of Europe. The plant is a hardy perennial, practically a small shrub, growing up to 50cm in height. The leaves will vary by variety. They can be lancelike or broadly ovate and smooth, toothed or lobed. Petals can be smooth and flat, like a daisy, or radiate out in a tubular, spoon-shape. There are many colour combinations (lavender, pink, white, yellow and bi-colour) and more introduced each year. The flowers appear in spring and summer and when you touch the leaves the plant emits a lovely perfume. The plant produces an abundance of flowers so it is ideal when planted in a pot or directly in the garden.

dormant. When grown as an annual the African Daisy needs some supplemental fertilizer every 2-3 weeks, especially when grown in a container. Deadheading the spent flowers isn't crucial, since many plants are sterile and don't produce any seed, however, it will keep the plants looking tidy. This plant has the characteristic that the flowers close at night. Curiously you can use the plant as a natural barometer as its flowers only half open when its cloudy and close completely when it is going to rain.

The African Daisy needs to be planted in a warm, sunny place. It will grow in light shade but will produce less flowers. Although drought tolerant once established they still need at least two or three centimetres of water per week to grow their best. During periods of drought or intense heat the plants will slow down and go

Make February This Year’s Pa rty Season! By Heidi Wardman

February is for many people, the most miserable month of the year. The cold, dreary weather, coupled with the anti-climax after the excitement of Christmas and New Year can make February seem like the longest month rather than the shortest. So here are a few fun fiestas which will help you to giggle away the February blues and get you into March before you know it!

Ground Hog Day

Ground Hog Day is celebrated in the US on February 2 every year. Those who have seen the popular film starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell will have some understanding of what it is all about, but little knowledge of the legend behind it….. On this winter’s anniversary, the Groundhog, a beaver-like rodent found in North America, is said to wake from hibernation and venture outdoors to check whether it can see its shadow. As legend goes, if a shadow is visible (i.e. the sun is shining) the winter period will end in another six weeks. At this, the groundhog returns to its hole to sleep out the rest of the winter. However, if it is a cloudy day, and it cannot see its shadow, it takes it as a sign that spring is right around the corner, and remains outside to shake off his sleepy state. The groundhog tradition originated in Germany, before immigrants carried it to their new settlement in the hills of Pennsylvania. The legend works on the laws of Candlemas, the day that is the midpoint between winter and spring. Here is a cute poem to emphasize the point: If Candlemas be fair and bright, Winter has another flight. If Candlemas brings clouds and rain, Winter will not come again.

Shrove Tuesday

Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day, Mardi Gras, and Fat Tuesday, is always celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday which marks the first day of Lent. As it is linked to Easter, the date changes every year, falling on February 12 in 2013. In Ireland the day is known as “Máirt Inide” meaning, "Shrovetide Tuesday", whilst other Catholic and Protestant countries traditionally call the fiesta "Fat Tuesday" or "Mardi Gras". In the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, Shrove Tuesday is more commonly referred to as "Pancake Day" following the tradition of eating pancakes to mark the anniversary. This custom tied in with the 40- day fasting ritual of lent, as it was believed that the rich ingredients- eggs, milk, and sugar, which are used in the batter, would help to ward off hunger pains for longer. These day’s people follow the tradition of eating pancakes even if they are not preparing to fast. They are often a popular choice among children, who enjoy them as a dessert with toppings of sugar, lemon, maple syrup or chocolate sauce. Another fun Pancake Day tradition, which is mainly observed in the UK, is Pancake Racing. The activity is believed to have developed after a housewife from Olney, Buckinghamshire, was so busy making her pancakes that she completely lost track of time until she heard the church bells ringing for the morning’s service. The tale has it that she went racing out of the house to attend the service in such a fluster that she forgot to put her frying pan down, so arrived at the church pancake an’ all. Strange as it sounds, the ritual really took root, becoming a proper contest associated with Pancake Day and attracting participants up and down the country.

Chinese New Year: The Year Of The Snake

Chinese New Year is the longest and most widely celebrated fiesta in the Chinese calendar. The Chinese year 4711 begins on Sunday February 10, 2013. Chinese months are defined by the lunar calendar, with every month commencing on the darkest day (i.e. when the moon is a very slight crescent). The New Year celebrations continue through from the first to the fifteenth of the month, which is when the moon is full and at its brightest. In China, families take several weeks to prepare for the festivities, and many also take time off work around that time. There are various myths and legends surrounding Chinese New Year, one of which tells of how Buddha called a gathering of all animals on that day. Only twelve attended, so Buddha named a year after each of them, with 2013 being the year of the snake. He proclaimed that anyone born under the same year as a particular animal would share some of its strengths and characteristics. Those born during snake years, including Audrey Hepburn, Bob Dylan, Oprah Winfrey and Brad Pitt; are believed to be wise, charming, smart, introverted, generous and gregarious. Red is the colour that is particularly associated with New Year celebrations, as It is believed to symbolize fire and drive away bad luck. The fireworks that form a central feature of the party also perform a similar role. Red is worn throughout the fiesta period, whilst homes are dressed up with red decorations, poems exchanged on red paper and children receive gifts of "lucky money" in red envelopes.

Singles Awareness Day

This is a contemporary anniversary, which originated in the US and is observed on February 15 each year- the day after Valentine’s Day. It is designed for those who are unattached; and either in search of love or happy to remain “Young, Free and Single”. The philosophy is that Valentine's Day is a celebration of love and romance, mainly aimed at those who are currently in a relationship. However, anyone who is not in a relationship or recently split from a partner may feel isolated and depressed around that time. Therefore, Singles Awareness Day was created as THEIR special day, and opportunity for them to mingle with other singles, send cards and gifts and generally enjoy their freedom. With this in mind, typical celebrations include big parties and other organised events as opposed to intimate gatherings. Ideal music choices for Single’s Awareness Day 2013 include “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” by Taylor Swift; “Somebody that I used To Know” by Gotye featuring Kimbra; and “Best Thing I Never Had” by Beyonce.

Toledo

Heart of e th t a ty i C l a ev i ed The M

Spain

by Sally Bengtsson

Toledo, the old capital of Spain, is located 70 km south of Madrid. This wonderful medieval city was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986 for its extensive cultural and monumental heritage. It is easy to get lost in its old buildings and squares, and find yourself transported back in time. As one of the former capitals of the Spanish Empire, and place of coexistence of Christian, Muslim and Jewish cultures, it also tells the tale of the harsh religious persecutions held against the Jews by the Visigoths and then during the Spanish Inquisition. The metal-working industry has historically been Toledo's economic base, with a great tradition in the manufacturing of swords and knives. This is noticeable as you walk along the narrow, winding, cobbled streets, as on almost every corner you will see a shop selling ornate swords together with beautifully decorated metallic jewellery. The manufacture of swords in the city of Toledo goes back to Roman times, but it was under Moorish rule and during the Reconquista that Toledo and its guild of sword-makers played a key role. Between the 15th and 17th centuries the Toledo sword-making industry enjoyed a great boom, to the point where its products came to be regarded as the best in Europe. Swords and daggers were made by individual craftsmen, although the sword-makers guild oversaw their quality. The city has been compared to Jerusalem and its landscape called biblical. Like Jerusalem, it was a city of three religions, with Muslims (more commonly called Moors in Spanish history), Jews and Christians all adding to the mosaic that made up Toledo. However, it is the Christian churches, monasteries and convents that now dominate, although Moorish influences are everywhere, and there are two historic synagogues. Overshadowing the city, and almost in the centre, is the huge Gothic cathedral, built on the site of the former Grand Mosque. Not far away (nothing is far away in old Toledo) looms another massive building, the Alcรกzar (fortress, now military academy). Cross to the other side of the river Tagus, where the Parador (state-run hotel) of Toledo stands, and look back and you can see how the cathedral and the fortress dominate the skyline. The best way to start a visit to Toledo is to park outside the city walls (there are plenty of carparks), get a map in the tourist information centre just opposite the Puerta de Bisagra, and enter the old city through this majestic stone gate. It is possible to visit all the main attractions within the walled city on foot and even though you can't do them justice in such a short time, it is perfectly feasible to get round them all in one day. If you have more than a day, use the first few hours to walk around, get a feeling of the place, enjoy the winding streets seeped in history and culture, and get familiar with the names of places and monuments before actually entering inside.

Historical Monuments in Toledo Alcázar: This outstanding castle is one of Toledo's most emblematic monuments and was used as a fortress by Romans, Visigods, Arabs and Christians. King Alfonso VI built his residence here and some of Spain's most prestigious artists and architects intervened in the construction of the royal palace. It was destroyed in the 18th century during the War of Succession, reconstructed only to be badly damaged a few years later in a fire and rebuilt yet again. The last time the palace was destroyed was during the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War and it was repaired when the War ended. Cathedral of Toledo: Founded in the 1st Century by San Eugenio, the first Bishop of Toledo. It was changed into a mosque by the Arabs during Moorish occupation of Spain, and then converted back into a cathedral by Alfonso VI. In the 13th Century it was destroyed and the impressive Gothic building which can be seen today was built on the old cathedral's foundations. Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes: 15th century monastery, Gothic style which was built on Royal demand during the reign of the Catholic King and Queen. Monastery Cisterciense de Santo Domingo de Silos: 16th century monastery with paintings of El Greco who is buried here. The Spanish artist painted the church. What appears to be one amazing stone gateway is infact two: the old gate which was built during the Moorish occupation of Toledo in the 6th and 7th centuries, and the new gate which extended the original and was built in the 16th century. This is the best way to start a visit to Toledo since there is ample car parking space on both sides of the Puerta and a very good Tourist Info just opposite on the other side of the main road. Sinagogue El Tránsito: 13th century sinagogue with a museum inside which describes the history of the Jewish population in Toledo and the influence the Jews had on local culture and events. Sinagogue of Saint María la Blanca: Today this former sinagogue is a crafts museum with interesting pottery and wooden exhibits.

Taller del Moro: Built in the 14th century by the Jews and, when they were expelled from Toledo, converted by a religous order into a church. The original Hebrew writings on the upper walls can still be seen today.

Museums in Toledo Museum of El Greco: The famous Spanish painter El Greco lived in this house which today has an impressive exhibition of his paintings, awell as exhibits of other artists. Museum of Contemporary Art: Set in la Casa de las Cadenas, an interesting 16th century building this art gallery has exhibitions of 20th century artists Museum of Santa Cruz: 16th century building that used to be a hospital. Lovely patio and stairway. Exhibits works of art, tapestries and artefacts found in archeogical excavations. Museum of the Fundación Duque de Lerma: Also known as Hospital de Tavera because Cardinal Tavera ordered it to be built in the fifteen hundreds. There is a statue of Tavera under the dome of the church. Museum de los Concilios y Cultura Visigoda: with exhibits from the Visigod period, set in the church San Román. Museum of Victorio Macho: What used to be the home of Macho, a famous sculptor, is now a museum containing some of his best known sculptures. Museum Parroquía de Santo Tomé: This museum is where El Greco's most famous painting, The Buriel of the Count of Orgaz (El Entierro del Conde de Orgaz) is exhibited.

But it's missing the shameless insanity of a wonderfully bad movie, and the particular vision, point of view, and coherence of some very good ones. So it sits there in between - loud, flashy, and unnecessary. “

The Great Gatsby

GoodRead Readers Reviews by F.Scott Fitzgerald

In 1922, F. Scott Fitzgerald announced his decision to write "something new--something extraordinary and beautiful and simple and intricately patterned." That extraordinary, beautiful, intricately patterned, and above all, simple novel became The Great Gatsby, arguably Fitzgerald's finest work and certainly the book for which he is best known. A portrait of the Jazz Age in all of its decadence and excess, Gatsby captured the spirit of the author's generation and earned itself a permanent place in American mythology. Self-made, self-invented

millionaire Jay Gatsby embodies some of Fitzgerald's--and his country's--most abiding obsessions: money, ambition, greed, and the promise of new beginnings. "Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter--tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther.... And one fine morning--" Gatsby's rise to glory and eventual fall from grace becomes a kind of cautionary tale about the American Dream.

"The Great Gatsby" is considered by many to be the zenith of american fiction writing in the last century. I won't say that it is the best american novel I've read but I will say it is probably the most perfect.”

Choosing to move to Canada, they close the zoo, pack their belongings, and board a Japanese cargo ship called the Tsimtsum.

by Lindsey Kelk

Angela Clark loves her life in New York. She loves her job, her friends and her gorgeous musician boyfriend, Alex, who is finally ready to move in with her and start planning their future together. Everything is perfect. But, after Angela loses her job, her world starts to crumble around her – her visa is revoked and she’s given

the disastrous news that she must leave New York and her life behind and go back to London. Confused, heartbroken and desperate to stay, the last thing Angela needs is a girls’ trip to Vegas just before Christmas – especially when Manhattan at Christmas is so perfect that she never wants to go home…

“Annoying boy suffers mild discomfort in the boat of plenty. Story starts off well enough, with cute religious confusions in a zoo. The whole thing sinks along with the ship, as it becomes fairly dreadful. Gah, just shoot the flare gun in the stupid tiger's face already, for heavens sake!” “It's not that it was bad, it's just that I wish the tiger had eaten him so the story wouldn't exist.”

GoodRead Readers Reviews “I think I have loved this book the best of the whole series. Every reader is looking for that happy, fairy tale ending and this book truly delivered! “ “I just love Lindsey Kelk's writing. She has a very funny way of putting characters across and Angela Clark is a perfect example of that.”

ay D s e’s e’ in tin nt le len a V y p p a ap H A r fo s Topp Gififtts To By Heidi Wardman Selecting an appropriate Valentine Gift for your partner can be a difficult task, and even more so if you are in a relatively new relationship. You may not be aware of how much attention they give to the occasion and how much they are willing to spend, which could leave you red-faced if they have splashed out and you have only bought a card. The best way around this is to discuss it, and then neither party will be left feeling disappointed. If you think that Valentine’s Day is a waste of money and would rather that your other half put the money towards improvements to the house or a better present for your birthday, then let them know. Likewise, if you are hoping for a diamond ring or weekend away then you should also let them know, and sooner rather than later so that they can start saving! We have compiled a few gift ideas for him and her to give you a little food for thought.

For Her

1. Box of Chocolates Every girl loves to receive chocolates, whatever the occasion. And if you have taken the time to discover what her favourite brand is then you can win yourself extra Brownie points. Remember that price is not the aim of the game with this present, but the fact that you have given it some thought. Why not tie a red ribbon around your box to make it look extra special, or slip a note inside the box, letting her know how much you love her. 2. Flowers Whether it is a single red rose, blooming bouquet, or bunch of her personal favourites, flowers are a winner for Valentine’s Day and can make a huge statement! One single white rose is not only a symbol of peace, but also tells your loved one that they are your “one true love”. This speaks volumes more than a bouquet of red ones! However, if you do decide to go for the flamboyant bouquet, make sure that you choose a number that means something significant to you as a couple. For example, twelve would symbolise the full cycle of the clock, twelve months of the year, and twelve signs of the zodiac- essentially consistent and forever. Alternatively you could choose the date of your anniversary or number of months/ years which you have been together. The addition of the single white rose to the larger red bunch can make a lasting impression to! 3. Lingerie Buying sexy underwear for the lady in your life is a symbol of the passion and intimacy which you share with her. The fact that you are looking forward to seeing her in her new attire will also make her feel special and desirable. However, be sure to consider whether it is the kind of thing that she would be comfortable in before you buy, or she may get the impression that you are only thinking of yourself! 4. Perfume Girls love to receive perfume from their lover, and it is so much more appealing than going out and buying a bottle for yourself. She may have her own signature scent, but if not, than this is your chance to create one, and ensure that she always thinks of you while she is wearing it. “Obsession” by Calvin Klein and “Romance” by Ralph Lauren are both great choices. 5. Pamper Kit Everyone deserves a little TLC and especially the lady in your life. So why not help her to unwind with a luxurious pampering kit. This can either be a pre-packed kit or a compilation of all of her personal pampering must have’s, if you know what they are! You may even wish to create your own package with her in mind, to show that you have put some real thought into the gift. Ideal choices include Massaging Body Oil, Body Lotion, Bubble Bath, Conditioning Mist and not forgetting Lip Balm, for ultra kissable lips. Ideal ingredients include coconut oil, jojoba oil and cocoa butter. 6. Cuddly Toy Cute, cuddly toys are always a girl’s weakness, with bears and bunnies being firm favourites. This is a great choice for Valentine’s Day, as manufacturers produce special anniversary editions to mark the occasion. A cuddly toy can also be kept forever, so is the perfect choice for your first Valentine’s Day together. 7. Jewellery Whether it is a necklace, bracelet or the ring that she has been waiting for, jewellery will definitely bring a smile to her face on Valentine’s Day. The great thing about jewellery is that there is an option available to suit every budget, and as long as you pay a little attention to the style that she tends to go for, you can’t go wrong. Be sure to give some thought to the time and place where you present her with the gift too, as it will have a greater impact if the setting is right. 8. Weekend Away If she has all of the perfumes, clothes and jewellery that your home can accommodate, why not treat her to a romantic weekend away. The break will do you both good, and provide the perfect opportunity to spend QUALITY time together. You do not have to blow the budget as there are some great deals to be had, and you can find the perfect retreat without travelling too far afield. Consider whether you would prefer a romantic city break or rural hideaway then jump on Google and get it booked!

1. Bottle of Plonk Whether he is a white or red man, the chances are that he will enjoy a decent bottle of vino more than a box of chocolates. Find out what his favourite blend is, or chose a well- presented bottle that looks the business. You never know, he may even share a glass with you if you bring the chocolates…

For Him

2. Romantic Meal It is not just a myth that the way to every man’s heart is through his stomach. So serving him a slap-up meal by candlelight will certainly put you in his good books. Try to plan a menu with a Valentine’s theme, such as crisp camembert wedges with raspberry sauce, followed by salmon in champagne sauce, and double chocolate dream gateaux for dessert. Be creative with your table decorations as well, with flowers, candles and metallic confetti pieces helping to set the scene for a romantic evening. Alternatively, if cooking isn’t really your thing, why not take HIM out for a meal for a change. Reserve a table at a venue which you both like and keep it as a surprise until you get there for added sparkle. Most venues offer a special set menu for Valentine’s Day, but don’t forget to book early to get the best seats in the house! 3. Aftershave Most men like to smell nice too, although are less inclined to splash out on a bottle of aftershave than us girls. Therefore, it’s your job to keep your man smelling good enough to eat, and Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to treat him to a bottle of his favourite scent. Great choices include “CK IN2U” for Him by Calvin Klein and “1 million” by Paco Rabanne. 4. Personalised Items Gifts that have his name written on them will always go down well, and provide him with something special to keep. The possibilities are endless, and could be tailored to a personal interest or hobby, or maybe a set of posh pens for the office. If he is a smoker maybe you could buy him a smart cigarette lighter, whilst tankards, hip flasks and multi tool knife sets are also popular choices. Why not add a special message and the date so that he can carry a memory of you wherever he goes. 5. Clothing Whilst women are generally happy to go shopping at every given opportunity, men are far less likely to hit the stores. Therefore, clothing is the ideal compromise when it comes to Valentine’s Gifts. Not only will you get the opportunity to refresh his wardrobe with a few stylish new clothing items, you can also indulge in your favourite pastime (and perhaps bag a few bargains for yourself on route- it would be rude not too!) 6. Gadgets Like it or not, men love gadgets. And no matter how crammed their man draw might already be, they will still be able to find space for a few more handy items. The possibilities are truly endless, and you can easily select something that he will appreciate with a little thought… Popular choices include the “Bosch” Aquatak 150 Pro power wash system, “Yale” Certified Safe Professional and Dulux PaintPod Compact. And if you want a gift that will also do you a favour, your man will get hours of fun out of the revolutionary “iRobot” Scooba. The system works its way around your home preparing, washing and scrubbing the floors, then sucking up the dirty water. Perfecto! 7. Jewellery and Accessories Jewellery remains one of the most popular gift ideas for Valentine’s Day, with a wealth of masculine pieces now available for him. Popular choices include rings, earrings, leather bracelets, dog tags and key chains. If he is not one for wearing jewellery, a watch can provide the perfect alternative, with all manner of models available to suit every budget. Meanwhile, if he is a smart dresser or businessman, a pair of personalised cufflinks will go down a treat, and although it may sound a bit boring, a new tie will always come in handy. 8. Perfect Date Finally, if you want to do something a bit different this year, then why not plan an exciting day out. As it is Valentine’s Day, it would make sense to whisk him away to a remote, romantic setting; and there are plenty of options on the Costa Blanca, such as the beautiful Jalon Valley or a boat trip to Peacock Island. Granada is the perfect destination for those who don’t mind travelling a bit further afield, with the beautiful Alhambra Palace and Gardens waiting to be explored. You could even pack a picnic and find a romantic retreat to stop for a bite to eat somewhere on your travels. And don’t forget the bubbly!

Furthermore, the Opel Mokka introduces ergonomic seating for the first time to the sub-compact SUV market as well as adaptive forward lighting (AFL+) and the integrated FlexFix bike carrier. Drive and comfort enhancing features and technologies include the Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and across all Mokka versions the Traction Control as well as the Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control systems. Apart from front-wheel drive, the Mokka can be fitted with an intelligent all wheel drive. The optional AWD technology recognizes automatically when traction is needed on all four wheels and ensures that it is provided at a maximum level when necessary. The Opel Mokka blends functionality and a comfortable, high seating position with a flavor of adventure. One of the main focal points of the Mokka's development was the chassis which was designed and fine tuned in Germany. The Mokka chassis has been tailored to the daily needs of European customers and is also very suitable for off-road conditions.

BlueMoon Solutions is the computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca. We aim to provide high quality computer services at realistic prices - we specialise in providing services to small businesses and home users

For all your home and business computer needs Welcome to this month’s computer article written by Richard from BlueMoon Solutions

What’s the confusion? What’s the score with Microsoft Hotmail, Outlook, Windows Live Messenger and Skype? I've had more emails in the past month about the above topics than anything else, so I thought I would dedicate some time explaining what Microsoft seem incapable of doing in words that we can all understand! So in the best interests of the plain English campaign here goes...

Hotmail > Outlook This is probably the one change that will affect most of us here on the Costas. If you have an email address ending @hotmail.com, @hotmail.co.uk, live.com, msn.com (and a whole bunch more - essentially any address that you use at the current www.hotmail.com website) then you will be affected. Microsoft will eventually stop www.hotmail.com from working, so it is in your interest to get used to the new system (or change) sooner rather than later. It’s pretty easy to do - all you need to do is to visit www.outlook.com and log on using the same email address and password that you currently use to access your email at www.hotmail.com You will see a new, 'improved' website for your email that does everything the 'old' Hotmail one did and a few bits more. There are currently no published timescales set for Microsoft to stop the old website but it makes sense to get used to the new system whilst you can still access the old one.

Contact Us

A few things are a little different so it might be a good idea to pay for some time from your local computer guy to come and show you what has changed and what is new. One of the most annoying changes that I have found is that the "forward" button has now been moved and isn’t immediately noticeable, making it rather frustrating if you just want to send on those jokes you receive to your friends. You can find it hidden away by clicking on the arrow that is to the right of the 'reply' button. Once you get used to where everything is in the new system it does feel faster and more responsive than the old Hotmail system.

Windows Live Messenger > Skype This one is confusing everyone, mainly because of the terminology that Microsoft are using and because of the lack of knowledge of what 'Windows Live Messenger' is amongst us ex-pats on the Costa Blanca. Microsoft sent an email recently to everyone that has a Hotmail (or derivative) account entitled "Important info about your Messenger account", announcing that they are "retiring the existing Messenger service globally" etc. The confusion is that many of us think that this relates to our Hotmail accounts (which it doesn't) and it has certainly generated a great deal of worried people if the amount of email I have received is anything to go by. What Microsoft are actually saying is that they are going to be stopping the Windows Live Messenger service at the beginning of March. This service is something that you probably don’t use. It is an instant messaging / chat

service that allows you to type messages to your friends - not your email system. Most of us have it installed (even though we may not use it). If you have it installed you will notice that it starts up when your computer starts look out for it. If you don’t use it then it’s probably worth removing it - you can do this easily enough from your Windows control panel. If, however, you do use it then you will need to move your account to Skype (Microsoft bought this program a few years ago and this is why they are moving everyone from Messenger to Skype). Again this a simple process but it’s one that some people are having difficulties with, so again the advice is to do it now before you are forced to stop using Messenger.

I'm still confused! Well in that case I apologize, but you shouldn’t feel bad - this stuff is never easy and it’s difficult to have to change something that many of us have been doing the same way for well over 10 years. Unfortunately we have no choice, so you can either make the move to Skype and Outlook.Com or you can choose to move to an alternative email system (yahoo.com or gmail.com perhaps) but you can’t continue to use Windows Live Messenger and Hotmail.Com so you might as well make the change now whilst you still have time. As always, if you have problems, please email them through to me, I will do my best to answer by email or arrange to come out to your home / work and go through it with you.

"It's beautiful," she says "but, I think it would be much nicer with yellow roses instead of the red ones." "Absolutely madam" sighed the baker "I shall see you in a week." A week passes and the exasperated baker puts the finished cake on the counter in front of the woman. "Here." He says firmly, "How's this?" "Absolutely perfect!" She says "It's exactly what I wanted."

A person at work is trying to help you, so accept their help. Even though it might not feel like help, you need it right now. Thank them for asking and see how you can return the favor.

Gemini 21 May - 21 June When you look around at the people you love, you might notice not all of them love you back. Try to spend time with those who are supportive of you. Avoid others who aren’t giving you the love you crave.

Cancer 22 June - 22 July This is a month of recommitment to your relationships. You can simply talk to the other person about how you care and let them know that you are there for them. What you hear might surprise you.

Leo 23 July - 22 August Though you might have chosen to speak up at work, you may be seeing the effects of your confrontation. Try to pull this person aside to see if you can smooth things over. And this month, try to keep your mouth shut in the office.

Virgo 23 August - 22 September A friend will ask you to give them advice on a difficult subject. Listen to what your heart says and share that with your friend. Be ready to support them in what they need to do.

Libra 23 September - 23 October

Scorpio 24 October - 21 November

If you meet someone who might be able to influence your career, Libra, make sure you stay in touch with them. They see something special in you. You can ask for their help and guidance.

The new exercise plan you’ve begun is working well. Keep up the good work and think about heading to a new location to workout.

Sagittarius 22 November - 21 December A situation at work may have you worried. Think about what the long-term consequences are of your decision before you tell anyone. Be confident that you will make the right choice for your needs.

Capricorn 22 December - 19 January With each new work challenge you face, you are able to come up with unique solutions. Even though you haven’t had a lot of struggle at work lately, you are ready for anything that is to come. Stay strong and speak up.

Aquarius 20 January - 18 February When you’re tempted to freak out about a work situation, stop for a moment. Realize that things might not be as difficult as they seem. Talk to a trusted friend about what you can do.

Pisces 19 February - 20 March Someone you know is going to come up to you and ask you for help with a project. While you might normally say no, make sure you agree to help this time. This project is going to help you in the future.
