All Good Intentions Start Here!

By Heidi Wardman

There is never a better time to start afresh than at the beginning of a brand new year. But out of all of the resolutions that have been made this month, how many of us will actually stick to our guns? New Year is the time when we all have chance to reflect on the past andBy lookHeidi to the future. It is when we can change things which we are Wardman not happy with, and consider all of the things which we would like to do and still haven’t gotten round to. They are basically commitments which we make to ourselves, to complete a mission or alter a bad habit. However, it is common knowledge that more of these promises are broken than are kept!

ORIGINS So where did the custom of making New Year pledges originate from? It is believed that the tradition dates back to the time of the early Babylonians, who made a promise to return any farm equipment which they had borrowed and begin the new year with a clean slate. Others suggest that resolutions were initially meant for the Gods, in a hope that they would send them good luck and prosperity, such as a good harvest or healthy cattle. In those days people also believed that it was bad luck to break resolutions, so people thought very carefully before they made their pledges and normally stuck to them!

• I will spend less time on Facebook. Kate, Guardamar. • I will stop telling the same story at social gatherings. Dave, Rojales. • I will stop stressing out over things that I have no control over. Rebecca, Torrevieja • I will try not to blow my whole months wages in the first week. Caz, Cabo Roig. • I will stop worrying about what other people think and just start to do what I want for a change! Lisa, Quesada. • I will stop chasing men and let them chase me for a while! Emily, Villamartin. • I will watch less TV and try to get out more. Jim, Torrevieja. • I will only drink alcohol on special occasions…and at weekends… and when I’m having a crap day….. Mike, Playa Flamenca. • I will find one girlfriend and stay faithful to her. James, Quesada. • I will stop listening to One Direction “What Makes You Beautiful” on repeat and annoying my boyfriend. Charlie, Torrevieja. • I will do my share of the cooking…the washing up is still her’s! Phil, La Marina.

CONTEMPORARY RESOLUTIONS These days people make New Year’s resolutions relating to all manner of things, but the most popular ones are those relating to health or vanity, such as quitting smoking, cutting back on alcohol intake, dieting or joining the gym. Students might make a pledge to increase their study time, or get an assignment finished, whilst parents often vow to spend more time with the kids. The general rule is that they are things that we know we should change, but have found it difficult to do so in the past. In the UK, some 55% of adults make a New Year’s Resolution every January, but only around 60% of these will have stuck to their promise 6 months down the line. Experts suggest that these personal failings are often down to people feeling that they SHOULD make the proposed changes, but in all honesty don’t really want to. And as anyone who has ever tried to give up smoking will confirm, if the motivation is not there then you are all set for failure from day one. Essentially, the key to keeping a New Year’s Resolution is to put some serious thought into it. Consider if it is actually achievable, and most importantly something which you genuinely want to do, then have the willpower to go for it!!! The Jungle Drums set about to compile a list of some of the resolutions which our readers have made for 2013….Can you guess which ones will actually be fulfilled ??? • Just for today, I will not sit in my living room all day in my boxers. Instead, I will move my Xbox into the bedroom. Alex, Quesada. • I will lose 3 kilos and get into a size 12 again. Debbie, San Luis. • I will go to the gym at least three times per week. • I will no longer waste time regretting decisions which I have made in the past and start to focus on the future. Jenny, Playa Flamenca. • I will not bore my boss with the same excuse for taking days off work. I will think of some new excuses instead. Dawn, Villamartin. • I will do more washing and use more deodorant. Danny, Cabo Roig. • I will avoid taking a bath whenever possible and conserve more water. Richard, Torrevieja. • I will give up chocolates totally... 100%... Once I’ve finished the tin of Roses…. Maria, La Marina • I will stop sending e-mails to my wife. Steve, Torrevieja.

New Beginnings Around The Globe By Heidi Wardman

For most people living in Europe, Christmas is over and done with and the New Year’s Eve celebrations are a blurred, distant memory. But as we get back to business as usual, some cultures are still awaiting the start of their New Year. For those of us who observe the Gregorian calendar, the New Year is celebrated on January 1, and historically marked the Feast of the Circumcision of Christ. As it is celebrated on this day in most countries, it is respected as being the world's only truly global public holiday. However, those who use other calendars commence their New Year at a different time, according to their religion or other customs: Chinese New Year is not only observed in China, but in several other countries around the globe, including Spain, the UK and Ireland. It is the second most celebrated New Year festival after January 1, and normally falls between January 20 and February 20. This is because it is the first day of the lunar calendar, so its actual date is determined by the earth’s position in relation to the sun. As in Europe, the holiday is a family time, and celebrated with lots of food and flamboyant street fiestas, which usually feature lion and dragon dances, drums and fireworks. Red is said to be a lucky colour in China, and people often give red gifts such as money in red envelopes. Whilst Isreal follows the Gregorian calendar, it does not officially observe January 1 as a special holiday. This is mainly due to strong religious objections by Jewish citizens, who always celebrate the New Year at “Rosh Hashanah” in autumn, no matter where they are living. However, some Jews take advantage of the opportunity to celebrate twice, with a more modest fiesta on January 1. In Hinduism, New Year is celebrated in different ways according to Regional Culture. For those living in Assam, Bengal, Kerala, Nepal, Orissa, Punjab and Tamil Nadu, a new year commences when the sun enters Aries on the Hindu calendar. This either falls on April 14 or 15, depending if it is a leap year. Those from northern and central India follow the Vikram Samvat calendar, and celebrate New Year around March 24 or 25the first day of the Chaitra Month. This is also around the time of the spring equinox in the Gregorian calendar. On this date, particular attention is devoted to the elders in the family, as younger relations visit them in the hope of receiving their goodwill blessings for the year ahead. Vietnamese New Year or Tết Nguyên Đán, as it is known locally, is the most prominent festival in Vietnam. The name Tết Nguyên Đán is Sino-Vietnamese for Feast of the First Morning. Like China, it uses a lunisolar calendar, with the anniversary falling between January 20 and February 20. This is said to be the start of spring, and as far as the Vietnamese are concerned, connections with new beginnings and new life make it the perfect time to celebrate a New Year. In Sri Lanka, New Year is celebrated in a slightly different way, depending whether you are of the Sinhalese or Tamil culture, however, both celebrations fall between April 13 and April 14. The Sinhalese New Year, or “aluth avurudda”, is significant to its supporters, as it marks the end of their harvest season. They also believe that there is a time lapse between the coming year and the previous one known as “nonagathe”. This describes an astrological occurrence, where the sun travels from the Meena Rashiya (House of Pisces) to the Mesha Rashiya (House of Aries) in the celestial sphere. During this time, several Buddhist rituals and traditions are carried out, which is far more important than the feasting and frivolities which follow later. Cleanliness is paramount throughout the ritual, whilst Sinhalese people traditionally exchange gifts, light oil lamps and eat kiribath, a type of rice pudding, on this day. For the Tamils, the New Year, or “Puthandu” is celebrated when the Sun enters Aries. The reading of the almanac or “Panchangam” is performed in Tamil temples to mark the New Year and is thought to bring health and prosperity to the people. Thai New Year is celebrated at the same time, and is known as “Songkran” in the local language. During the celebrations, people traditionally splash water at each other, particularly on the shoulders, as a way of blessing them and sending good fortune to their families. The Malayalam New Year, “Puthuvarsham” can either be celebrated in Mid- April or Mid- August. It is different from the majority of other calendar systems in India, as it is not determined astronomically, but relates to the first day on the Malayalam Calendar, known as the “Kollavarsham”. The calendar was constructed by a group of scholars in 825 Current Era, following the reconstruction of the coastal city of Kollam, which had been completely destroyed by a natural disaster. In Ethiopia, New Year is called “Enqutatash”, and is observed on September 11 or 12. The country applies its own ancient calendar, which has connections with the Julian calendar. The New Year is heavily based on nature, and falls at the close of summertime, when everything should be in full bloom.

Thinspiration for 2013!

by Heidi Wardman

So you over indulged over Christmas and are now wrecked with guilt and regret as we head into a New Year. Don’t beat yourself up over it, as that is what the holidays are for, and you have a whole year ahead to make amends! Studies have proven that the majority of people living in the developed world pile on a few pounds over Christmas, with more than two thirds of Britain (a whopping 34 million people) expected to start their diet this month. The New Year slimmers are dedicated to their mission, with most hoping to lose between one and two stones. The figures relating to those who stick with their new regime however, are somewhat depleted! As many as 77% of women in the UK set out to reinvent themselves at the start of a New Year, determined to make changes to their normal diet, clothing, hair and makeup regimes. And it is not only women who feel the need to cut down, as around 58% of men also embark on diets in January. Studies have readily linked UK weight loss trends with location, with the majority of those who are most conscious of their weight living in Northern Ireland, followed closely by the North West, East and Yorkshire. Interestingly, those in the south are less bothered about the bulge, with people living in London

said to be the laziest when it comes to taking care of themselves.

TARGETS In spite of these good intentions, many do not sustain their health conscious attitude for long, with 12% giving in within the first two weeks of starting a weight loss plan and 14% cheating others (and themselves) into thinking that they have followed their plan, whilst secretly snacking on all of their usual sins. The worst diet statistic refers to the devious 3%, who are guilty of deliberately sabotaging their mate’s diet, with constant offers of chocolates, stodgy meals and heavy nights out which will all put the kybosh on their weight loss hopes. Nutrition Expert, Kellie Griffin, said that “maintaining a suitable body weight for your height and build is the best move that you can make with regards to your overall health, whilst living for months at a weight that is far lower or above your ideal will put strain on your vital organs. This is why the targets which we set should be realistic, and not encourage us to go to such extremes.” She went on by saying that “In doing this we are paving the way for a happy and healthy 2013.”

MOTIVATION The key to reaching, and sustaining, your ideal weight also lies with the reasons why you want to achieve it. We each have our own motivation for wanting to lose weight or keep fit, with some relating to health and others more interested in appearances. Maybe you have a big event coming up, such as a wedding or other celebration, and want to look trim in your new dress. Or simply think that it will make YOU feel happier about yourself. Your first step in making positive changes is to set targets which are small enough to achieve, but still make a long term difference. In seeing yourself achieving the goals which you set yourself, you are far more likely to persevere, rather than give up when you feel that you still have miles to go.

COMPANY Having a companion to diet alongside of is a good way to keep motivated, as you can then compare notes and recipes, as well as helping to encourage each other. Taking a friend is also a great idea if you

plan to work an exercise programme into your weight loss plan. Obviously it would be more fun to embark on a bike ride with a mate rather than cycling alone, or meet once a week for a swim or keep fit class and coffee and catch- up afterwards. Another top tip for maintaining an exercise regime is to enter a sporting event, such as a charity fun run or dance-a-thon, and then train with others who are also participating. That way you will be helping others at the same time as yourself, so deserve to feel double satisfaction!

TAME THAT TUM Even if you are not overweight, over- indulging over the festive period can leave you feeling bloated and uncomfortable. It is quite normal to eat and drink more than you usually would at Christmastime, with so many extra social engagements in the diary, and quite often, you will find yourself eating foods that you would not have on an average day. It is no wonder then, that your tummy is feeling a bit tender, as a result of gas, irregularity, or water retention. Fear not, as there are several simple things that you can do, to wave goodbye to bloating! Firstly, eating an increased volume of potassium can combat the effects of eating too much salt. Work on the basis that the more salt that you consume, the more potassium rich foods you should add to the diet, including green leafy vegetables, white beans, baked potatoes (including the skin), asparagus, tomatoes, citrus fruits, bananas, melon, dried apricots and yogurt. Any level of exercise can also help to reduce bloating, as it stimulates the bowels helping to avoid constipation. So try to take a stroll after you’ve eaten (You may even get out of the washing up at the same time!!) You should drink plenty of fluids, preferably water. It is recommended that you drink at least eight glasses of liquid each day, in order to flush waste out of the system,

and reduce water retention. Although there is a limit to how much you should drink due to the high caffeine levels, coffee is also a good choice as it helps the colon to contract, making you more likely to go to the loo. Peppermint tea is your best bet for curing bloating caused by excess gases, as it relaxes the digestive tract, ridding the trapped gas from the body. And finally, take a tip from the celebrity A-Listers: Cut out excess salt altogether and drink two to three litres of water a day for at least a week prior to your date, to achieve an ultra svelte waistline in your little black dress! Essentially, the most important thing is to make your exercise and weight loss programme varied, fun and work for you! So experiment with it until you find a routine that you are happy with….and stick with it!

of Avocado

inflammatory properties, thereby reducing the risk of inflammatory and degenerative disorders. 5.Promote eye health Avocado is an excellent source of carotenoid lutein, which known to help protect against age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. 6.Regulate the blood sugar levels The monounsaturated (good) fats in avocados can reverse insulin resistance, which helping to regulate the blood sugar levels. Avocados also contain more soluble fiber, which keep a steady blood sugar levels. 7.Prevent birth defects Avocados are rich in folate, a B vitamin commonly known as folic acid. One cup of avocado provides you about 23% of the Daily Value for folate. The high amount of folate in avocado is essential in the prevention of birth defects, such as neural tube defect and spina bifida.

Should Auld Acquaintance Be Forgot... By Heidi Wardman In most countries throughout the world, New Year is celebrated with gusto. The way in which the festivities are approached varies along with the country’s customs and has altered gradually overtime. However, plenty of food and drink are a must have, wherever you might be! UK - New Year’s Eve is the biggest event of the year in most British households, with large groups of friends and family coming together to wish each other a happy and healthy year ahead. In English tradition, people would always get together at each other’s houses, often bringing offerings of food and drink to share around. The first guest to arrive should always be male, who was believed to bring good fortune upon the household. He was expected to enter through the front door and offer a variety of traditional basic gifts such as bread, an alcoholic drink for the head of the family and coal to light the fire. If he appeared empty handed he would usually be turned away, as people feared that this might bring a curse upon their household. Scotland - In Scotland, New Year is more commonly known as Hogmanay, when tradition would also see whisky and coal being given as gifts for the hosts at house parties. As in England, it is more common for people to go out these days, with many celebrations spilling out of bars into the streets. Edinburgh hosts one of the world's most flamboyant New Year celebrations, which is centred around a mammoth street party held along Princes Street. The city’s celebration spans five days, usually commencing on December 28 and coming to an exhausted close on January 2 which is also a Bank Holiday. The firing of the cannon mounted at Edinburgh Castle marks the stroke of midnight, before a plethora of fireworks set the sky alight. A tradition that is followed across the UK and much of the English- speaking world is the linking of hands and singing “Auld Lang Syne” at midnight. The poem was written by Scotsman, Robert Burns in 1788 and later set to the tune of a popular folk song. The anthem’s Scottish title may be translated into English literally as “old long since”, but these days we would usually say “long long ago” or “old times”. Ireland - New Year's Eve celebrations in Ireland’s major cities are modest, when compared with those on Christmas Eve and St Patrick’s Day. The tendency is to hold parties indoors, and see in the New Year alongside of close friends and family. Spain - In Spain, the New Year “Nochevieja” celebrations usually kick off with a traditional dinner, where families come together to share a feast of prawns, hams, cheese and lamb. Ladies are often presented with a gift of red underwear from their partner, which is thought to bring them good luck for the future. Following the meal, the Spanish will often go to organised parties, either at a local bar or friend’s house, where they are supplied with a party bag “cotillion” crammed with party blowers, streamers and hats to decorate each other with at midnight. The countdown is led by the clock on top of the Casa de Correos building in Madrid’s main square. One of the nation’s main customs is to eat twelve grapes at midnight- one for every chime. The tradition dates back to 1909, and was actually borne out of the vineyards of Alicante, as a way to rid the producers of their surplus stock as they enter a new year. This is followed by a toast, when the grapes are washed down with cava, champagne, or cider. The Spanish often rise fairly early on New Year’s Day, and continue their celebrations with a sticky breakfast of hot chocolate and fried pastry called “chocolate con churros”- not something which I would look forward to after a night on the town! China - It is easy to spot when the Chinese are celebrating New Year, as they paint the front door of their house red to encourage happiness and good fortune. They also hide all knives throughout the entire day, because if someone cuts themselves then they will destroy the family’s good fortune for the coming year. Germany - In Germany, New Year's Eve is called “Silvester” and marked with large parties and extravagant firework displays. One of Europe’s largest New Year Celebration’s takes place in Berlin every year, with attendance totalling over a million people. The fiesta is centred around the Brandenburg Gate, where visitors gather to watch the fireworks and toast the chimes with a glass of Sekt (German sparkling wine) or champagne. The Germans have a number of interesting New Year customs, including dropping molten lead into cold water then telling fortunes using the formations which evolve- heart shapes are an indication of pending marriage, whilst round shapes denote good luck; anyone seeing an anchor is witnessing a call for help and cross formations signify a sad demise…Gulp!!! They also say that it is lucky to touch a chimney sweep or have him rub some ash on your forehead. Foods associated with the event include Speckdicken, which is similar to a savoury pancake; jam doughnuts, often containing liquor based filings, and marzipan pigs, which are consumed for luck. France - In France, the New Year's Eve “la Saint-Sylvestre” celebrations are also opened with a lavish feast, with delicacies of foie gras, seafood such as prawns and oysters, and champagne usually being found on the menu. The meal can either be enjoyed as an intimate event at home or at a fancier venue which is usually followed with music and dancing. On New Year's Day, “le Jour de l'An”, friends and family get together once again, to compare New Year's resolutions and reflect on the past year. Ice cream is a favourite treat for French people on New Year’s Day. Brazil - On New Year’s Eve, Brazilians eat lentils which are meant to signify wealth and prosperity. They are used to form the main ingredients for soup and casserole type dishes. The evening invites a number of ceremonious events including a sacrificial boat filled with jewellery, candles and flowers, which is launched from the beach of Rio de Janeiro into the sea. The offering is thought to bring wealth and prosperity upon those concerned. Priestesses also dress up in blue and white to perform propitious ceremonies in honour of the water goddess.

Cyclamen If there is one plant which belongs to the cold months of the year it is the cyclamen. In spite of its reputation for being difficult to grow it brings a splash of welcome colour to the winter environment and has the most perfect flowers. It is true that it has special needs in comparison to other flowering plants but, with its multiple varieties and sizes, you can create a good combination of blooms to bring the typical spring brightness to any garden. The cyclamen can be grown in natural conditions in Europe, Asia and Africa. However, nowadays different types of species are distributed all over the world and in all kinds of environments. Taking care of its needs: •Depending on the maturity and of the buds that it has ready to flower the needs will be different. Nonetheless, for the majority of cyclamens the following steps will help to conserve the plant. •The bigger the number of flowers below the leaves, the more abundantly it will bloom. • Cyclamens do not like draughts or changes of temperature or a hot climate. In view of this is recommended not to place them in tempera-

tures higher than 20 º C. They prefer shaded areas which are fresh and humid. • It is advisable not to place the plant in direct sunlight, since this will provoke rapid fading. • Cyclamens needs space to breathe so it is necessary to plant them well separated from other plants. • Although they need plenty of water, excess damp is not good. The plant should be placed in a saucer of water for ten minutes rather than direct watering to the centre of the plant. • Watering a couple of times per week is sufficient and only when the soil has dried out.

Feeding and cultivation This type of species needs a liquid fertilizer which is added to the irrigation water every 15 days during the growth period and when it is in flower. It is preferable to cultivate cyclamen as annual plants because in the course of time the plants and flowers degenerate and lose their quality. The most common thing is to buy bulbs. These will produce the flowers that will adorn the garden or the interior of the house during the autumn and the winter. In order that this system has the required result, as soon as the flowers become dry the tuber is extracted and left in a dry, dark place with plenty of air to be able to plant the following season. You can also opt to plant the tuber it in the garden in a shady place just watering it a little in order that it does not dry off. In November it can be returned to the house. If the plant is placed in a suitable place in the right climate and not allowed to become too dry it will bloom three times a year. If you want to lengthen the process of flowering it is necessary to remove the flowers that are withered by turning them lightly. A soft paintbrush can be used to remove the pollen carefully not to damage the plant and cause fungi to grow. Cyclamen grow best in deep pots which accommodate their growth.

s u eo g a tr u O r ei h T d n A rs te is L A-

You’ve seen them on the big screen, and read all about their lives, loves and beauty secrets in the world’s media, but have you ever wondered how much Hollywood’s brightest stars take home at the end of the month? One thing that’s for sure is that they are considerably richer than you! The Jungle Drums looked into the pay packets of the five highest paid actresses in the business, and felt rather sick to find that they earn more in a day than we can expect to take home in a decade….

art

Kristen Stew

This stunning superstar earns a cool $34.5 million or €26.2 million per year. At the age of just 22 years, Los Angeles born Kristen was already earning more money than her fellow Hollywood actresses. Her biggest pay packet to date came from her role as Bella Swan in the blockbuster Twilight Saga. She also earned mega bucks for starring in the Runaways (2010), Snow White and the Huntsman (2012), and On the Road (2012). The press show a keen interest in her personal life, and particularly her romantic connection with Twilight Co-star Robert Pattinson. The paparazzi have hounded the couple for four years, although they still refuse to publically announce their relationship. With reference to her reluctance to confront the media with her personal affairs, Stewart has been quoted as stating that "I'm selfish. I'm like, 'That's mine!' And I like to keep whatever is mine remaining that way. I always say to myself I'm never going to give anything away because there's never any point or benefit for me”. And with the overwhelming successes recorded to date, it doesn’t seem to have held her back!

z

The glamorous Ms Diaz commenced her career as a model, and whilst now in her forties, she is still as striking as ever. She rose to fame during the 1990’s with roles in the hit movies The Mask, My Best Friend's Wedding and There's Something About Mary. Today, Cameron earns around $34 million or €26.1 million per year. During her 2011 blockbuster, Bad Teacher, the astute business woman agreed to take a minimal upfront payment for her role in the film, with a larger percentage of the profits. The film eventually earned $216 million on a modest budget of $20 million, so the phenomenal profit margin helped Cameron to pocket a tidy $34 million between May 2011 and May 2012. The percentage deal is not always popular with movie stars, but paid off (literally) in this case!

Cameron Dia

ck

Sandra Bullo

With over twenty years worth of starring roles under her belt, this 48- year old actress now earns a whopping $25 million or €19 million per year. Her most recent film, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, won huge criticism by the media, although Ms Bullock still remains a favourite with film makers. Some of her greatest successes were achieved during the 1990’s, in films such as Demolition Man, Speed, The Net, Hope Floats, A Time to Kill, and While You Were Sleeping. Her role in Blind Side (2009) also helped to put her name back in lights.

e

Angelina Joli Ms Jolie is often cited as the world’s most beautiful woman, but it is her acting talent and keen business sense that have made her the millionaire that she is today. Even when she is not working, Angelina still earns millions from interviews and advertising deals for companies like Louis Vuitton. At 37-years old, she has already received an Academy Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, and appeared on 78 magazine covers between May 2011 and May 2012. It is not surprising that she was named Hollywood's highest-paid actress by Forbes in 2009 and 2011. She is now believed to earn around $20 million or €15.2 million.

ron

Charlize The

The South African Actress and Model commenced her journey into fame in the US during the 1990’s, with roles in The Devil's Advocate, Mighty Joe Young, and The Cider House Rules. Her latest Hollywood role in Young Adult (2011) only pulled in $23 million, although hurled her back under the media spotlight and helped her to secure the $18 million (€13.7 million) pay packet that she has become accustomed to! Subsequent appearances in Snow White and the Huntsman and Prometheus, as well as being the face of Dior have all helped to keep Charlize above the bread line!

Caravaca de la Cruz in pa S of t r ea h e th to it Offers a cultural vis

by Sally Bengtsson

If you fancy getting away from the coast and seeing a part of Spain that until recently few coastal residents had even heard of, why not head into the mountains and visit Caravaca de la Cruz. Situated under an hour north-west of Murcia City, this historical town is one of only five Holy Cities in the world and is well worth a visit. Legends say that the cathedral which nestles on the hilltop overlooking the medieval allies and squares, contains part of the Vera Cruz, the one Jesus was crucified on, placing Caravaca on a par with Rome, Jerusalem, Santiago de Compostela and Santo Toribio in Lebanon, as a must visit place for pilgrims. The Caravaca Cross is the symbol of the city, it protects and gives strength to all his people, and also reaches deep in the heart of the pilgrims who come to the Sanctuary for a visit. The status of Holy City was bestowed by Pope John Paul II in 1998, granting the City a Permanent Jubilee year every 7 years for perpetuity. The first one was held in 2003; the next one will be in 2017. As a border town caught between the Catholic forces of Castille and the last remaining Moorish stronghold in Spain, Granada, Caravaca had a turbulent Mediaeval history, but it was during this period that the legend of the Cross of Caravaca was born, bringing the religious orders which shaped the structure of Caravaca today, with its impressive hilltop castle and eclectic collection of churches and monasteries. Caravaca is renowned for its important May Fiestas, held in honour of the Vera Cruz, which also incorporate the Moors and Christians celebrations and the Running of the Wine Horses. It is also the home of Europe´s largest collection of ethnic instruments at Barranda, the Museo de Música Étnica Barranda and is the location of the Barranda festival de Cuadrillas, which celebrates the Region's ethnic music traditions. The municipality is home to around 26,000 inhabitants.

The Jungle Drums

A bit of history The Iberians, Romans and Muslims all passed through this town, which has developed around its Castle, built in the 15th century and commissioned by the Knights Templar. However, Caravaca is essentially the holy town, the town of the cross that carries its name. According to legend, in 1232 the Moorish King Abu Zeid was converted to Christianity when he saw how two angels brought a cross down from heaven to a priest held prisoner in the castle in order for him to give mass. This legend led to the construction, as from 1617 and on the site of the fortress itself, of the main monument of this town in the north-east of Murcia, the Chapel of La Vera Cruz. The most important feature of this building is its luxurious façade, made from red marble excavated in Cehegín and which offers a complete exaltation to the Holy Cross. Despite its small size, another very important monument in Caravaca is the Temple of the Holy Cross, where the relic is bathed each year on 3 May during the celebration of the popular Festivities of The Holy Cross. Another popular "fiesta" is los Caballos del Vino (Wine horses), in commemoration of a tradition that took place in the 13th century. On that date, the Christian besieged in the fortress by the Arabs managed to break the siege and search for water. When they failed to find any water, they returned to the fortress with the wineskins on their horses filled with wine. The commemoration consists in decoratively harnessed horses galloping up the steep slopes to the Castle. Together with the Moor and Christian processions, these are the main events in the festive calendar of Caravaca. The Uribe Palace (16th century) holds the Festivals Museum where you will be able to live them in first person. Other Activities Caravaca is also in a privileged position in terms of rural tourism, with a wide range of activities from hill walking to horse riding, giving the visitor the opportunity to come into closer contact with nature. Las Fuentes del Marques is a relaxing park which meanders along the crystalline waters. It is just 2 km from the town of Caravaca and is the ideal place to stroll along and sit under weeping willows watching fish swim under the many foot bridges within the park. The restaurant overlooking the park offers delicious steaks cooked on hot stones and a taste of real Spain.

Drama / Music / Romance Release date: 26th December 2012 Critics Reviews Time Out New York: “Russell Crowe's pained vocal stylings (they sound more like barks) as relentless Inspector Javert can be forgiven after hearing Hugh Jackman's oldpro fluidity in the central role of Jean Valjean, hiding a criminal past.” The Hollywood Reporter: “As the enduring success of this property has shown, there are large, emotionally susceptible segments of the population ready to swallow this sort of thing, but that doesn't mean it's good.”

Jungle Drums Rating:

The Hollywood Reporter: “Stewart, selected for Marylou five years ago on the basis of her striking debut in "Into the Wild," is perfect in the role, takes off her clothes more than once and nearly always seems to be breaking a sweat, which kicks the sexiness quotient up high.” Total Film: “It may lose its way on occasions, but thanks to a committed cast and a script that captures the Kerouac vibe, Salles' adaptation never ends up on the road to nowhere.”

Jungle Drums Rating:

Cirque de Soleil

Critics Reviews

Critics Reviews “A bona fide high-wire act, "Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away" delivers towering thrills through its candy-colored 3D ode to the titular outfit's astounding acrobatics. The only thing missing from exec producer James Cameron's three-ring circus is the sense of danger that comes with the daredevil troupe's live perfs, as even the slightest misstep obviously would never have made the final cut of this impeccably polished pic. Upbeat buzz among Cirque fans and newbies alike should result in a long-legged holiday run for Paramount, even though, at 91 minutes, the ultimately eye-straining extravaganza leaves one feeling that slightly less might've been more.”

Exploring The Coldest Places on the Planet By Heidi Wardman So you think that it is cold where you are right now? Check out the Jungle Drums’ rundown of the 10 coldest places on earth, with Baltic temperatures that would really chill your beans!

10 Rogers Pass Montana US Located on the northern side of Montana in the United States, Rogers Pass is ranked the tenth coldest place on the planet. The pass is a firm favourite for bird-spotters, where Canadian geese, swans, golden eagles, bald eagles and snow geese can be seen flying east, whilst a selection of other winter creatures can also be found by those with a keen eye. The coldest months are March and April, and the temperature has been known to drop to a chilly -56.5 Celsius or -69.7 Fahrenheit.

9 Fort Selkirk Yukon Canada The ninth coldest place, Fort Selkirk, can be found in the region of Yukon, Canada. With temperatures plummeting as low as -58.9°C or -74°F in January, you won’t expect to find this in your winter sun brochure. In fact, the town became completely deserted during the 1950’s, when even the bravest of residents simply could not cope with the icy conditions. Settlers have now returned to the zone, after adequate infrastructure was installed to heat homes and businesses, although the only way in remains via boat or by air.

8 Prospect Creek Alaska US Prospect Creek is known to have a sub-arctic type climate, which is characterised by a long winter season and only a short period of milder conditions. The area was developed to coincide with the construction of the pioneering Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS), although remains sparsely populated due to the harsh climate. The coldest month of the year is February, where the record coldest temperature dropped to -62°C or -79.6°F.

7 Snag Yukon Canada Also situated in Yukon, Snag ranks at number seven. This is a small village situated in bowl-shaped valley of White River in Yukon. It experiences some of the worst weather conditions found anywhere in the world, including frequently strong icy winds, frost, mist and fog throughout the year. The freezing conditions have been known to fall to -65°C or -81.4°F during the coldest month, January.

6 Eismitte Greenland Located on the interior Arctic side of the autonomous country of Greenland, Eismitte means “mid-ice” in English. It is known to be the best place on earth for witnessing miles of great frozen plains. Eismitte became famous in July 1930, when it was the chosen location of a great Arctic expedition, which claimed the life of German Scientist, Alfred Wegener. Here, the coldest month is in February, when temperatures can drop to -64.9°C or 84.8°F.

5 North Ice Greenland Ranking at number five, North Ice is the name of a research station lying on the inner ice circle of Greenland. The centre was adopted and expanded by the British North Greenland Expedition which took place from 1952 to 1954. Again, the coldest time of the year is February, when temperatures lie around -66°C or -86.8°F.

4 Verkhoyansk Russia Verkhoyansk is a small town nestled in the Sakha Republic of Russia, near the Yana River. Here weather conditions go to dramatic extremes, featuring some of the biggest seasonal temperature changes anywhere in the world. Typical monthly temperatures range from a chilly −67.7 °C or −89.8°F in January, rising to a more pleasant +16.0 °C (60.80 °F) in July.

3 Oymyakon Russia Oymyakon is a rural locality situated within the Oymyakonsky District of the Sakha Republic, Russia, close to the Indigirka River. It is the coldest permanently inhabited area on Earth, with a population of 472 people. The climate here is similar to that of Verkhoyansk, with temperatures ranging from 34.6°C (94.3°F) in August, to -71.2°C (96.2°F) in February.

2 Plateau Station Antarctica Plateau Station is an inactive American research base, situated on the central Antarctic Plateau. It was constructed in early 1966 to become the most remote and coldest US station in the world. The unit remained in use until 1969, when the team left permanent occupancy of the premises, although it is still reserved for research purposes. The iciest temperatures were recorded in July 1968, with lows of -73.2 °C (-99.8 °F)

1 Vostok Antarctica Vostok is a Russian Antarctic research station, and lying only 1 300 km from the Geographical south pole, is ranked number one in the list of coldest places on the planet. It takes its name, which means “east” in English, from the lead ship of the First Russian Antarctic Expedition, captained by Fabian von Bellingshausen. The lowest reliably measured natural temperature on Earth, of a spine chilling −89.2 °C (−128.6 °F) was recorded at Vostok, and the coldest month is generally August. Due its location close to the South Geomagnetic Pole, Vostok is recognised as the best place for observing changes in the Earth’s magnetosphere, with research studies also being conducted in actinometry, geophysics, medicine and climatology. So there you have it! Whilst these freezing figures might not be enough to make you turn off the heating this winter, you can glean some comfort from the fact that it could be much worse, with temperatures on the Costas only expected to dip to around 5°C (41ºF). Lovely.

The Jungle Drums

Like most vehicles in this category, the 107 is often the second or even the third vehicle of the household. On the other hand, it distinguishes itself from its segment with an even more predominantly female customer base and appeals to a higher proportion of single people. The satisfaction that it offers, above all through its manoeuvrability, driving pleasure and economy is above the average for its segment. After more than 665,000 vehicles produced by the end of 2011, the 107 is now writing a new chapter in its history. With a completely redesigned front face and unchanged dimensions, the Peugeot 107 adopts the new style of the Peugeot marque, with a look that is both subtle and sophisticated. The new, more curved bonnet incorporates the new identity of the marque, so the rib of the bonnet which frames the two-tone lion and the number plate repositioned in the centre of the lower front panel hint at its relationship with the 208. While retaining their shape and their high position, the light units are more refined: at the front, they are extended and adopt a two-tone mask, echoing the colour of the marque emblem situated on the bonnet, whereas at the rear they are adorned with a dark mask thus framing the lamps with a deep ruby colour. The new radiator grille, composed of honeycomb cells specific to the 107, forms a fine and distinguished mouth, suspended by the body colour that surrounds it. It still has a simple range with 2 levels of finish, available in 3-door and 5-door versions and with 2 engines: 1.0i 5-speed manual and 1.0i 5-speed two-tronic manual.

BlueMoon Solutions is the computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca. We aim to provide high quality computer services at realistic prices - we specialise in providing services to small businesses and home users

For all your home and business computer needs Welcome to this month’s computer article written by Richard from BlueMoon Solutions

Computer New Year’s Resoultions... Well it’s that time of year again! Christmas is over (well the one on the 25th December is anyway) I hope you all had a great time, received the presents you were hoping for and didn't drink too much - well 2 out of 3 ain’t bad! As we start to make those unrealistic resolutions that we never have any intention of keeping, I thought I would throw in a few more achievable resolutions that you should consider for the health of your computer. 1. I will back up my important stuff regularly. This is a favorite gripe of mine. This is mainly because I see so many unfortunate people that contact me with computers that have failed catastrophically and their data is unrecoverable because they don’t have a backup. Just imagine all of your precious pictures, documents and music gone! If you want to find out more information on backups then the link below should give you everything you need... http://www.bluemoonsolutions.es/?s=backups 2. I won’t believe everything that I am sent by email. We receive so many emails nowadays about all sorts of things and it’s easy to take them at face value - especially if they are sent to us from friends or family. You should try keeping an open mind about everything that you re-

Contact Us

ceive by email and don’t just accept them as truth. Over the years I have seen emails that warn about everything from the "next big virus", to racist lies and even one that told me the world was going to end in December something to do with the Mayan calendar running out (well, they're not around themselves any more so I guess there is no-one available

to update it!) It’s easy to just accept some of these emails as truth, especially if they come from people that we regard as knowing more about these subjects than we do, however you should be skeptical and research them yourself, it’s usually very easy. If you want to find out how easy then just pop along to the link below (it’s safe, honest!) and find out for yourself... http://www.bluemoonsolutions.es/?s=hoax+e

mails 3. I will keep my operating system up to date. It’s difficult sometimes to know when and what you should update on your computer. Some of the most common questions that I am asked are, "should I update Java?" and "how do I know if it’s safe to update?" etc. Generally speaking it’s good to update anything that reports that it’s from AVG (or your particular AntiVirus system), Adobe, Java or Microsoft (i.e. Windows Update). By keeping your system up to date (especially with the Microsoft updates) you ensure that you are protected from the latest vulnerabilities out there on the big bad Internet. If you want to find out more about how to make sure you are properly up to date then the link below will help... http://www.bluemoonsolutions.es/?s=updates 4. I won’t install everything I see and then wonder why my computer is running slowly. There is a world of stuff out there that we can download and install for free onto your computer and there are all sorts of things that get installed automatically with a great deal of this software. If you don’t need it then don’t install it. If you download and install something and then realise it’s not useful then remove it afterwards. Most of this type of thing ends up clogging up our computers, making them slow and unresponsive so try to avoid it if you can.

A burglar has just made it into the house he's intending ransacking, and he's looking around for stuff to steal. All of a sudden, a little voice pipes up, "I can see you, and so can Jesus!" Startled, the burglar looks around the room. No one there at all, so he goes back to his business. "I can see you, and so can Jesus!" The burglar jumps again, and takes a longer look around the room. Over in the corner by the window, almost obscured by curtains, is a cage in which sits a parrot, who pipes up again, "I can see you, and so can Jesus!" "So what," says the burglar, "you're only a parrot!" To which the parrot replies, "Maybe, but Jesus is a rottweiler!"

So you want a day off. Let's take a look at what you are asking for. There are 365 days per year available for work. There are 52 weeks per year in which you already have 2 days off per week, leaving 261 days available for work. Since you spend 16 hours each day away fron work, you have used up 170 days, leaving only 91 days available. You spend 30 minutes each day on coffee break which counts for 23 days each year, leaving only 68 days available. With a 1 hour lunch each day, you used up another 46 days, leaving only 22 days available for work. You normally spend 2 days per year on sick leave. This leaves you only 20 days per year available for work. We are off 5 holidays per year, so your available working time is down to 15 days. We generously give 14 days vacation per year which leaves only 1 day available for work and I'll be darned if you are going to take that day off!

Aries 21 March - 19 April While you might be ready for anything come January 1, realize that 2013 is guaranteed to surprise you, Aries. And you might be surprised in a number of ways. Even though your relationships might seem steady right now, January is when they start to show some cracks.

_

Taurus 20 April - 20 May

` a

Gemini 21 May - 21 June

b c

The first day of the year is going to set the tone for 2013, Taurus. Make sure you stay positive. If you can’t, then at least repair any damage before the day is done. To start the year off right, Gemini, you have to embrace change. Start a new fitness routine and change your diet. Your body will thank you.

Cancer 22 June - 22 July Sometimes, the beginning of the year can make you nervous. Instead of being frightened, think about what opportunities you have. Every day, make a choice to treat yourself well.

Leo 23 July - 22 August Many Leo signs will start the year off with a surprise. The person that you thought was on your side isn’t as helpful as they once were. This month is a time for finding out what’s really going on.

Virgo 23 August - 22 September Before you start the busyness of the year, rest up in January, Virgo. Make time for naps and for better sleeping patterns. These will serve you well in the rest of the year

d

Libra 23 September - 23 October

e

Scorpio 24 October - 21 November

f

Sagittarius 22 November - 21 December

The first month of 2013, Libra, is a time when habits are easy to set. Find something that you want to work on this year. Take small steps to encourage this new habit. This month, make a promise to yourself to quit one bad habit this year. Find plans to help yourself quit. Let others in your life know so they can support you. You are off and running at the start of the year, Sagittarius. Your energy is high and you feel like you can accomplish anything. Use this energy to start a new exercise program.

g

Capricorn 22 December - 19 January

h

Aquarius 20 January - 18 February

i

The beginning of the year tends to be a time of challenge for you. Not only are you faced with introspection, but also you are ready for change. Take action now to set the tone for the year.

Commit to yourself right now that you will have a healthy life. Create three rules that you will follow, no matter what. Post these rules where you can see them

Pisces 19 February - 20 March If you have a sensation of dread in the beginning of the year, don’t worry about it. You’re entering a period of peace, so it feels strange. Just breathe and enjoy the new calmness in your life.
