The Legend Of St. Valentine The history of Valentine's Day, and the story of its patron saint, is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first "valentine" greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl, possibly his jailor's daughter, who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed "From your Valentine," an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic,

heroic and most importantly ,romantic figure. By the Middle Ages, perhaps thanks to this reputation, Valentine would become one of the most popular saints in England and France. Origins of Valentine's Day: A Pagan Festival in February While some believe that Valentine's Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine's death or burial, which probably occurred around A.D. 270, others claim that the Christian church may have decided to place St. Valentine's feast day in the middle of February in an effort to "Christianize" the pagan celebration of Lupercalia. Celebrated at the ides of February, or February 15, Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus. To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at a sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification. They would then strip the goat's hide into strips, dip them into the sacrificial blood and take to the streets, gently slapping both women and crop fields with the goat hide. Far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed the touch of the hides because it was believed to make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city's bachelors would each choose a name and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage.

Type 2 Diabetes Diabetes is a lifelong condition that causes a person's blood sugar level to become too high. Types of diabetes There are two main types of diabetes, referred to as type 1 and type 2. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body doesn't produce enough insulin to function properly, or the body’s cells don't react to insulin. This is known as insulin resistance.

sible if you notice these symptoms. Causes of type 2 diabetes Insulin is a hormone produced by part of the pancreas, a large gland located behind the stomach. Insulin controls the amount of glucose (sugar) in your blood. It moves glucose

Diabetes symptoms Diabetes can cause various symptoms. Symptoms common to both types of diabetes include: * feeling very thirsty * urinating frequently, particularly at night * feeling very tired * weight loss and loss of muscle bulk You should visit your GP as soon as pos-

In some cases of type 2 diabetes, it may be possible to control your symptoms by altering your lifestyle, such as eating a healthy diet (see below). However, as type 2 diabetes is a progressive condition, you may eventually need medication to keep your blood glucose at normal levels. To start with this will usually take the form of tablets, but later on it may include injected therapies, such as insulin.

Type 2 diabetes is far more common than type 1 diabetes, which occurs when the body doesn't produce any insulin at all. In the UK, about 90% of all adults with diabetes have type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes usually affects people over the age of 40, although increasingly younger people are also being affected. It is more common in people of South Asian, African-Caribbean or Middle Eastern descent.

If you are diagnosed with diabetes, you may be referred to a diabetes care team for specialist treatment, or your GP surgery may provide first line diabetes care.

Left untreated, diabetes can cause many health problems. Large amounts of glucose can damage blood vessels, nerves and organs. from the blood into your cells, where it is converted into energy. In type 2 diabetes, not enough insulin is produced to maintain a normal blood glucose level (insulin deficiency), or your body is unable to use the insulin that is produced effectively (insulin resistance). Treating type 2 diabetes It is important diabetes is diagnosed as early as possible. Diabetes cannot be cured, but treatment aims to keep your blood glucose levels as normal as possible to control your symptoms and minimise health problems developing later.

Even a mildly raised glucose level that doesn't cause any symptoms can have damaging effects in the long term. Living with diabetes If you have type 2 diabetes, you will be advised to look after your health carefully. Caring for your health will also make treating your diabetes easier and minimise your risk of developing complications. It helps to eat a healthy, balanced diet, stop smoking (if you smoke), drink alcohol in moderation and take plenty of regular exercise.

tars SWho Died Before Their Time

Whitney Houston Born: Whitney Elizabeth Houston On August 9, 1963 in Newark, New Jersey, U.S. Died: February 11, 2012 (aged 48) Beverly Hills, California, U.S. Cause of death: Accidental Drowning Resting place: Fairview Cemetery, Westfield, New Jersey

Whitney Elizabeth Houston was an American recording artist, singer, actress, producer, and model. In 2009, the Guinness World Records cited her as the most awarded female act of all time.Houston was one of the world's best-selling music artists, having sold over 200 million records worldwide. She released six studio albums, one holiday album and three movie soundtrack albums, all of which have diamond, multi-platinum, platinum or gold certification. Houston's crossover appeal on the popular music charts, as well as her prominence on MTV, starting with her video for "How Will I Know," influenced several African American women artists who follow in her footsteps. Houston is the only artist to chart seven consecutive No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hits. She is the second artist behind Elton John and the only woman to have two number-one Billboard 200 Album awards (formerly "Top Pop Album") on the Billboard magazine year-end charts. Houston's 1985 debut album Whitney Houston became the best-selling debut album by a woman at the time of its release. The album was named Rolling Stone's best album of 1986, and was ranked at number 254 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Her second studio album Whitney (1987) became the first album by a woman to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Houston's first acting role was as the star of the feature film The Bodyguard (1992). The film's original soundtrack won the 1994 Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Its lead single "I Will Always Love You," became the best-selling single by a woman in music history. With the album, Houston became the first act (solo or group, male or female) to sell more than a million copies of an album within a single week

period under Nielsen SoundScan system. The album makes her the top female act in the top 10 list of the best-selling albums of all time, at number four. Houston continued to star in movies and contribute to their soundtracks, including the films Waiting to Exhale (1995) and The Preacher's Wife (1996). The Preacher's Wife soundtrack became the best-selling gospel album in history. On February 9, 2012, Houston visited singers Brandy and Monica, together with Clive Davis, at their rehearsals for Davis' preGrammy Awards party at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. That same day, she made her last public performance, when she joined Kelly Price on stage in Hollywood, California, and sang "Jesus Loves Me". Two days later, on February 11, Houston was found unconscious in Suite 434 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, submerged in the bathtub; she was later pronounced dead. The cause of death was not immediately known. It was later ruled by the coroner to have been an "accidental drowning". Beverly Hills paramedics arrived at approximately 3:30 p.m. and found the singer unresponsive and performed CPR. Houston was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. PST. Local police said there were "no obvious signs of criminal intent." On March 22, 2012, the Los Angeles County coroner's office reported the cause of Houston's death was drowning and the "effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use". The office stated the amount of cocaine found in Houston's body indicated that she used the substance shortly before her death. Toxicology results revealed additional drugs in her system: Benadryl, Xanax, marijuana and Flexeril. The manner of death was listed as an "accident."

February 2014

Biography | Comedy | Crime Critics Reviews Blu-ray.com: “The Wolf of Wall Street” has some truly inspired chaos to hold attention, led by an eye-bulging, spittle-spraying performance by Leonardo DiCaprio, who once again takes the title as the most feral actor working today, channeling his inner badger to portray a man without morals, decency, and self-control, flaming out in a most spectacular manner.”

American Hustle

Crime | Drama Description

A con man, Irving Rosenfeld, along with his seductive British partner, Sydney Prosser, is forced to work for a wild FBI agent, Richie DiMaso. DiMaso pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia.

Critics Reviews Blu-ray.com: “Somewhere underneath all the hair and costumes is a fine motion picture called “American Hustle.” It’s a period piece sampling from the style and discomfort of the 1970s, and it’s the latest from writer/director David O. Russell, a helmer currently on a tear with the back-to-back successes of “The Fighter” and “Silver Linings Playbook.” That momentum is halted a bit by “American Hustle,” but the movie remains an evocative, churning inspection of responsibility and deception.”

Saving Mr. Banks

Biography | Comedy | Drama Description

Author P.L. Travers reflects on her difficult childhood while meeting with filmmaker Walt Disney during production for the adaptation of her novel, Mary Poppins (1964).

Jungle Drums Rating:

Critics Reviews Blu-ray.com: “Saving Mr. Banks” tells the story of how the 1964 smash “Mary Poppins” came to be, weathering a difficult creative process that featured intense disagreements between author P.L. Travers and Walt Disney. “Mary Poppins” is generally a lively song and dance event for the entire family, keeping in step with Walt’s cheery entertainment edict, which turned the picture into the most popular film of 1964. “Saving Mr. Banks” dramatizes the fight for that lungful of life to remain in the effort, with Travers depicted as an ice cold woman disdainful of frosted futures, preferring to mastermind a movie that reminds kids of the harsh, cruel world ahead of them. ”

GRANADA AMAZING ARCHITECTURE AND FREE TAPS sson by Sally Bengt

The Sierra Nevada mountains look down on one of Spain’s most interesting and beautiful cities. Granada is known throughout the world for its stunning Alhambra Palace, and the city has a lot more than this to offer the visitor. Due to the fact that it was born from a mixture of cultures, Granada is a treasure trove for architect lovers, and visiting the winding streets of the old barrios is like stepping back in time. White washed houses with flower filled balconies offer picturesque views around the Albayzin, where Moorish tea houses waft mysterious scents alongside Spanish tapas bars and Jewish bookshops. The city is built amongst hills, so be prepared to climb, but the views from the higher areas are well worth the effort. Spring is an ideal time to visit, with bright, sunny days and scented orange blossom, and snow capped mountain peaks in the background. The old centre offers an array of interesting sights, all within walking distance. Plaza Isabel La Catolica is just a block west of Plaza Nueva and marks the intersection of Gran Via de Colon (the main drag heading north) and Calle Reyes Catolicos (the main drag heading southwest to Puerta Real, where it splits into Calle Recogidas and Acera Del Darro, heading west and south respectively). The cathedral and royal chapel are just to the northwest of this square. The Alhambra and Albayzin (the Arabic quarter) are on opposite hills on the east side of town with Carrera del Darro and a small river separating them. The cathedral towers over the surrounding blocks in this spectacular 16th century setting. It is the second-largest cathedral in Spain and noted for its bright Renaissance interior. Constructed after the Reconquista of Granada to re-

place the mosque on the site, the cathedral was laid out with Gothic foundations but built in the Renaissance style and decorated with Baroque elements. Just behind the cathedral is the Alcaiceria, a set of winding alleyways which were originally home to a Moorish silk market under Granada's Muslim rule. Although the market initially survived the Reconquista, Philip II had it shut down and a fire destroyed what was left in 1850. Today's market was rebuilt in the late 19th century for tourists and holds mostly souvenir stores underneath the Moorish-style archways decorating the walls. Cynics claim there is no such thing as a free lunch, but the tapas bars of Granada offer a free and substantial snack with every beer you order, thanks, in part, to an above-average quota of students. Start your Granada tapas bar crawl on Calle de Elvira or Calle Navas and gravitate to the organized mayhem of Bodegas CastaĂąeda, an old-school favourite. Rightly so, the greatest artistic wealth of Granada is the Alhambra Palace and the Generalife. The Generalife consists of the beautiful, romantic gardens, which surround the palaces, offering a diversity of colourful, scented flowers, ornate plants, refreshing fountains and exquisite ponds. The Alhambra is the architectural culmination of the works of Nasrid art that were undertaken in the 13th and 14th centuries, with most of the Alhambra having been built at the time of Yusuf I and Mohammed V, between 1333 and 1354. February 2014 ing around the ornate palaces it is hard to believe the buildings are so old, they are in such fantastic condition and offer a glimpse into how the privileged few lived almost 700 years ago. The number of visitors to the Alhambra is strictly limited to 6,600 people each day, with just 300 every half-hour to the Nasrid palaces. Opening times are mid-March to mid-October 8.30am-2pm and 2pm-8pm, and mid-November to mid-March 8.30am-2pm and 2pm6pm. Entry costs €13/£11. Two thirds of the tickets can be bought up to three months ahead through Caixa bank (0034 934 923750; in Spain: 902 100095; alhambra-tickets.es) and printed out from Caixa machines in town or at the Alhambra entrance. Even when the allocated number has been sold, roughly a third of the tickets are available on the day, but only to those who turn up at the ticket office at the Alhambra. This is a slightly nerve-racking experience as it's hard to estimate from the queue snaking around in front of you just how many places are left. Aim to get there when the office opens at 8am and the probability of getting tickets is high. There are also night visits (Friday and Saturday; winter 8pm9.30pm, summer 10pm-11.30pm), but you can't see both the Nasrid palaces and the Generalife in the one visit.

Granada was first settled by native tribes in the prehistoric period, and was known as Ilbyr. When the Romans colonised southern Spain, they built their own city here and called it Illibris. The Arabs, invading the peninsula in the 8th century, gave it its current name of Granada. It was the last Muslim city to fall to the Christians in 1492, at the hands of Queen Isabel of Castile and her husband Ferdinand of Aragon. The Sacromonte hill, which overlooks the city from the North, is famous for its cave dwellings, and is the home of Granada's large but diminishing gypsy community. It is worth taking a wander around this unique area, where you are almost certain to hear flamenco dancers practicing for a show or a gypsy band preparing a new song. After visiting Granada why not take a drive up to the Sierra Nevada, where you can ski in the winter or hike in the summer. Whichever you choose, the scenery is spectacular.

There are some alternatives. One is the Bono Turistico (three days, €25/£21; five days, €30/£25), which includes the Alhambra as well as other sights and bus trips. Then there are guided tours that pick up from hotels and have reserved slots, for a hefty €49 (£41). A few parts of the Alhambra are accessible without tickets: the colonnaded courtyard of the late 15th-century Palacio de Carlos V, the church, bathhouse and the craft shops and hotels along the calle Real de la Alhambra.

The Beetle Dune Concept Volkswagen has revealed this Beetle Dune concept at the Detroit Motor Show with a rather explicit announcement: that should its reception be positive, it'll go into production. In fact, we're told this car is practically production ready, sitting as it does on the FWD architecture of the current Beetle, matched to a 210-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder TSI engine (the same one you get in a Golf GTI), six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission, XDS electronic differential lock, strut-type front and multilink rear suspension. It's half an inch (12 mm) longer, however, with custom wheel housings increasing its girth by a total of 2.2 inches (5.6 cm). Its body is also almost an inch taller, plus that body has been raised by 2 inches (5 cm). It additionally features 19-inch spoked aluminum wheels, a chrome-plated underbody skidplate, and side trim strips that are described as being "reminiscent of the original Beetle’s running boards." The custom bonnet has a raised center section flanked by air vents, beneath which is a central air intake and ring-shaped LED fog lights/turn indicators. Some of the highlights of the interior include a panoramic tilt/slide sunroof, black leather and Gobi sport fabric upholstery, aluminum dash accents, and a high-resolution 7.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen, which serves as the interface for the infotainment system. In the rear, skis can be carried on the boot lid by swiveling the outer portions of the spoiler out of the way, placing the skis beneath those portions, then swiveling them back to hold the skis in place. The tops of the skis are slid through a receptacle in the roof spoiler, and secured with a built-in belt. boot can still be opened with the skis on it. You'll also notice how everything is orange and should you like this orange, it could appear in a city near you. So, VW are listening, everyone. Do you like this Beetle

Porsche 911 Targa

Porsche brought a dash of retro styling to the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit with the world premiere of the new 911 Targa. Echoing back to the first Porsche 911 Targa with its roll bar in place of the B-pillars, wrap-around rear window, and movable roof section, the new edition combines the the classic 60's look with state-of-the-art roof technology.

From the window line down, the 911 Targa is a Porsche Carrera 4 cabriolet, which means it’s a rear-weighted all-wheel drive with Porsche Traction Management (PTM), the Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) seven-speed gearbox and the Sport Chrono package with its dashboard performance display. As to the lines, if you hold your hand at the right level, its a Carrera 4. However, if you raise your hand, the top half is a trip back to the 1960s with the familiar rounded rear window giving a domed, streamlined vibe. Porsche calls it a “high-quality, innovative remake of the classic vehicle from 1965.”

Where the new 911 Targa differs from the classic versions is that the convertible roof section is a bit of a party trick. Press a button and the rear window pops up and folds back to make way for the soft middle section, which folds up and slides back behind the rear seats. With the roof stowed, the domed rear window closes up again. According to Porsche, two versions of the Targa will be available in May. The first is the 911 Targa 4, which has a 3.4 liter flat engine punching 350 bhp (257 kW). It does 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.8 seconds, which isn't bad for a cabriolet, and has a top speed of 175 mph (282 km/h). Fuel economy is between 9.5 and 8.7 liters/100 km, depending on transmission, and puts out between 223 and 204 g/km of carbon dioxide. For a bit more oomph, is the 911 targa 4S with a 3.8-liter engine for 400 hp (294 kW). That translates to 0 to 100 km.h in 4.4 seconds and the speed topping out 184 mph (296 km/h). That eats into the fuel efficiency for 10.0 and 9.2 liters/100 km/h and 237 to 214 g/km of carbon dioxide. The 911 Targa will go on sale in Germany first for a not inexpensive €109,338 and the 911 Targa S goes for €124,094, inclusive of VAT and country-specific equipment.

February 2014 BlueMoon Solutions is a computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca. We aim to provide high quality computer services at realistic prices - we specialise in providing services to small businesses and home users

For all your home and business computer needs Welcome to this month’s computer article written by Richard from BlueMoon Solutions

Technology for your other half This month will see an orgy of gift-giving and sloppy obsession as couples around the Costa Blanca show their appreciation for one another on Valentine’s Day, so this month I thought we would have a look at some technology you might want to buy your other half to help get them into better shape. Of course if you really loved your partner you would have bought them a Microsoft X-Box One for Christmas like my lovely wife did. If you didn’t then don’t worry, by using the information in this article I’m sure you will be able to recover and once again ingratiate yourself with your other half. Many of us are trying to get back into shape after the excesses of Christmas, and there is one gadget that can help track your progress - the FitBit wireless activity monitor. This little piece of tech is less than 100 euros and is the size of a

small memory stick. It is worn either as a wristband or simply placed in your pocket

and will track loads of things about your day i.e. the steps you have made, the distance walked and how active you have been during that distance. It also tracks the number of floors you have climbed - it is effectively a modern day pedometer. When you link it to your smart phone it also allows you to track so much more – calories in and out, weight, water intake and you can even track your food eaten and use it to help control your weight. You can find out more about Fitbit at www.fitbit.com/uk Another gadget that you might be interested in (but whether you’re brave enough to buy it for your partner is a different thing!) are the new bathroom scales from Withings. These are no ordinary bathroom

scales, as they connect to your wifi network and send your weight, body mass statistics and other information to your free online profile. This profile can be updated either from your smart phone or computer. The scales can be used by anyone in the family and they automati-

cally detect who is standing on them and sends the information to the appropriate online profile. You can find out more about these and other gadgets that they sell at www.withings.co.uk Finally, staying on the fitness theme, you might want some way to link these two gadgets together – so that they can share information with each other and many other fitness gadgets. I use www.runkeeper.com to track the little activity that I do. It has the ability to also share and read from both of the gadgets mentioned above so I personally find Run Keeper great. It can also be used in conjunction with your smart phone to track and draw maps of your walks for example. You can track all of your exercise activity and link that with your bathroom scales data and see whether one has an effect on the other. The great thing about Run Keeper is that once you have linked it to your fitness gadgets it automatically updates their profiles every time you do some activity. Like a lot of websites nowadays Run Keeper offers the freemium model (offering a free service for standard functionality and then a premium service if you opt to pay a little each year).

You’ve got to be joking I had eighteen bottles of whiskey in my cellar and was told by my wife to empty the contents of each and every bottle down the sink, or else... I said I would and proceeded with the unpleasant task. I withdrew the cork from the first bottle and poured the contents down the sink with the exception of one glass, which I drank. I then withdrew the cork from the second bottle and did likewise with it, with the exception of one glass, which I drank. I then withdrew the cork from the third bottle and poured the whiskey down the sink which I drank. I pulled the cork from the fourth bottle down the sink and poured the bottle down the glass, which I drank. I pulled the bottle from the cork of the next and drank one sink out of it, and threw the rest down the glass. I pulled the sink out of the next glass and poured the cork down the bottle. Then I corked the sink with the glass, bottled the store drink in and drank the pour. When I had The Apple everything emptied, the house with one Central LondonI steadied was into last night. corks, bottles, and sinks hand, broken counted the glasses, with the other, which were twenty-nine, and as the Police are for them again, and finally I had houses came bylooking I counted iWitnesses... all the houses in one bottle, which I drank. I'm not under the affluence of incohol as some thinkle peep I am. I'm not half as thunk as you might drink. I fool so feelish I don't know who is me, and the drunker I stand here, the longer I get.

A bride on her wedding night says to her husband, "I have something I must confess, darling... I used to be a hooker." He says, "That's a bit of a shock, dear. Your past is your past but, I must admit, I find it quite erotic. Tell me about it." She replies, "Well, my name was Nigel... and I played for Wigan!"

Thieves have broken into my local shop and stolen 24 cans of redbull and 10 jars of coffee.

I'm not judgmental, so when I see a person driving slow in the fast lane, I never assume what gender she is.

How do these people sleep at night?!

My mate's girlfriend, Wendy, was dancing on a table in the club. "Good legs," I said to him "Do you really think so?," he asked. "Yes," I replied, "most other tables would've collapsed under that weight !
