The Andalucian Funnel Web Spider IN Andalucía there lives a fairly large, black burrowing spider belonging to the venomous funnel web tarantula family. Its scientific name is Macrothele calpeiana and it belongs to the Hexathelidae group, which is normally associated with Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Central Africa and South America. There is one species known for the Mediterranean region (Walckenaer, 1805). The genus name is derived from Ancient Greek makro meaning big and thele, which refers to the spinnerets. The origin of the name calpeiana is from Calpe, a name the Phoenicians gave to Gibraltar.

This spider is known in Spanish as La Araña Negra de los Alcornocales, as within the Los Alcornocales Natural Park (Cadiz province) can be found the largest populations. Los Alcornocales is a forest of evergreen oak trees, mainly cork oak (Quercus suber) with its vast shady canopy creating an almost tropical feel. The temperatures and humidity levels in that area are more suited to these spiders’ requirements with a deep leaf litter for ease of burrowing. The first sign of their location is a silken white, sheet-like web anchored firmly to twigs, rocks, plants etc. This narrows to a tube near the centre, the entrance to the tunnel, which often leads to cooler depths underground. Although, there may be a labyrinth of several entrances to the one tunnel, the spiders are rarely communal. The range of sites for these webs can be a simple scrape under a rock, vegetated banks, under logs, crevices in dry-stone walls, tree trunk bases and even tree hollows up to two metres above ground level. The underground portion can be to a depth of 80 centimetres, the upper part of which has a non-sticky web lining and the rest is left bare. The day-time temperature at the burrow end can be 3 to 5 degrees Celsius cooler than at the entrance.

cated in the two segments of the chelicerae (the parts to which the fangs are attached). “Dinner” is then taken into the private and protected retreat area behind the web to be devoured. After eating they are fastidious cleaners. Any food debris will be discarded away from the web and around an hour of thorough grooming will follow.

Around April-May time, males wander around at night in search of a female with which to breed. It is thought there are pheromones in the silk of a female’s web that attract a mate. A gentle courtship ensues, as the male does not want to become the next meal. The female then eats more over the ensuing weeks. In early July, she seals herself into the retreat in order to produce the egg sac. The females care for the egg sac by carrying it with them, manoeuvring to different parts of the tunnel to maintain the right levels of temperature and humidity. The young have their first moult within the sac and she then helps to release them using her fangs. Possibly 100 to 250 eggs will hatch into baby spiders, known as spiderlings. They will accompany the female to the outer web after dark and are thought to feed on smaller prey. At some point cannibalism among the young may occur, triggering dispersal of the survivors. At this point, many of the young will fall prey to other animals. As they prefer little disturbed areas and are active at night, you will not normally encounter these spiders. Be cautious if you are moving logs, rocks etc and see a sheet like web. If provoked these spiders will rear up in a threatening manner and can even give an audible hiss. A famous close relative is the Australian funnel-web (Atrax robustus), whose bite can be fatal. Macrothele calpeiana venom is mild in comparison giving localized but painful swelling.

The Andalucian funnel-web spider is considered to be the largest in Europe and is easily recognisable. They are jet black with a glossy carapace and fine hairs on their legs and abdomen. The 1.5cm-long spinnerets, at the rear, almost look like extra legs. The body can be up to 3.5cm long and the stretched legs can reach a span of 8cm. When under threat it can raise up its front legs into an attack position, exposing its fangs. This is the only spider in Europe to be protected by the European Union Habitats Directive. They are found mostly in Cádiz and Málaga provinces with smaller numbers in scattered enclaves discovered in Huelva, Sevilla, Granada, Jaén, Gibraltar and the furthest north Badajoz, in Extremadura. Two smaller communities found in North Africa are thought to be accidental imports from Spain. Further reports of their existence on the French side of the Pyrenees have been put down to their being carried with Olive trees and such. However, they are unlikely to survive cold winter temperatures. These spiders are most active at night when they will wait at the tunnel entrance for prey to become glued onto the silken web. Their diet consists of small insects such as beetles, woodlice, millipedes and crickets. When they feel the vibration of a trapped insect they will carefully approach, then bite the ill-fated prey with venom, which liquefies the victim as it is wrapped in silk. The venom is injected into the prey through openings in the tips of the pair of fangs. The glands that produce this venom are lo-

The Giant Huntsman Spider The giant huntsman spider (Heteropoda maxima, from maximus, meaning "the largest") is a spider of the Heteropoda genus. It is considered the world's largest spider by leg-span. Like all spiders in the huntsman family, Heteropoda maxima is not a dangerous spider, at least its venom is not dangerous to humans. However the bite of this spider cause red swelling that is sometimes painful for humans and can also cause vomiting, fever, headache and nausea. The giant huntsman does not use a web to catch its prey but rather goes out actively hunting, using stealth and speed to catch its dinner. They live in caves and there is still much that is not known about this spider, including its main diet. However it has been seen to eat insects and even small rodents. Because of it's size and cave dwelling habits, it is not hard to imagine it being able to hunt small bats as well, but this has not been verified. The normal life span of the giant huntsman spider is of two years but it is possible they live longer. When scientists went exploring for new species in 2001, they were amazed at the quantity of previously undiscovered creatures in every corner of the jungle. The discovery of the Heteropoda maxima, The giant huntsman, came as an special shock simply because of the size of the spider. One of the scientists of the group was quoted as saying that creatures of this size have no right remaining undiscovered for so long. It is a yellowish-brown with several irregularly distributed dark spots on the rear half. The legs have wide dark bands before the first bend. Like all huntsman spiders, the legs of the giant huntsman spider are long compared to the body, and twist forward in a crab-like fashion. Apart from its size, the Huntsman can be distinguished from other species of Heteropoda by genital characteristics: On males, the cymbium is much longer than usual, at least three times longer than the tegulum. The female is distinguished by a characteristically shaped epigyneal field with two anterior directed bands, and the course of their internal ducts.

The giant huntsman spider is the largest member of the Sparassidae family, boasting a 30 centimeter (12 inch) leg-span, and 4.6 centimeter (1.8 inches) body-length. The largest known member of the Sparassidae known prior to the discovery of Huntsman was the Australian Beregama Aurea with a body length of about 4 centimeters. Since the discovery of Huntsman Sparassidae species larger than Beregama Aurea have been discovered, one of them is considered to be the largest in the Middle East.

The Second Largest Spider in the World The Goliath birdeater (Theraphosa blondi) is a spider belonging to the tarantula family, Theraphosidae. It is considered to be the second largest spider in the world, and it may be the largest by mass. It is also called the Goliath bird-eating spider; the practice of calling Theraphosids "bird-eating" derives from an early 18th-century copper engraving by Maria Sybilla Merian that shows one eating a hummingbird, but the term is inaccurate as they do not primarily prey on birds. Like all tarantulas, they have fangs large enough to break the skin of a human. They carry venom in their fangs and have been known to bite when threatened, but the venom is relatively harmless and its effects are comparable to those of a wasp's sting

made simple

Buying a Spanish property for Investment The Buy-To-Let market can be easily distinguished into two markets, Long Term Residential Rentals and Short Term Holiday Rentals..but which is best for you? The answer lies in the location of the property, as follows: • Long term residential rentals these work best in or near cities and towns. This services local employees, families with children, and retired people. While these properties can very often be purchased at low prices, the rental revenue is also low, but consistent.

• Short term holiday rentals - these offer the best returns if attention is paid to location and marketed well. As holiday rentals have to be set in the best desirable locations, the buying costs will be higher, but will have a higher rental revenue, albeit more sporadic. We have a short term window of opportunity to find great properties at lower prices than usual, due to the current economic crisis. Now is the right time to buy as Spain slowly crawls out of this crisis. To view a good selection of investment properties, go to www.resales-spain.com to view properties priced between 45,000 euro and 100,000 euro, or higher, if desired. All these properties are open to potential purchasers making a reasonable offer. Nowadays, if you invest 100,000 euro in a long or short term deposit account with a bank, there would be a return of around 2%, which is only 2,000 euro per year. If you invested this same sum in a property, the return on rental, whether long or short term, would be between 4,200 euro and 15,600 euro! The lower price would be a long term tenant providing a slow and steady income in the property and the upper price would mean holiday weekly lets, more work but for more returns. At the end of the day the monies invested are in something tangible, a property that you own, and can be sold off at any time to recoup the initial investment, if necessary. It is important to stress, that this really is the best moment to buy at the lowest prices Spain has ever seen, as although we are currently in a recession, over the next few years, things will start to improve and prices will start to rise again. Spain is the undisputed top European destination for holidays set in the following categories, whether it is a budget package holiday or a more specialised privately organised holiday. It is the latter that offers the Buy-to-Let investor the best return. So, your first step is to select your specialised category then directly target that marketplace. Below are some of the top categories that perform well.

1. Sun, Sea and Sand: A near beach location is all important; all facilities to hand and no more than 45 minutes journey from the airport in a taxi, as many will not want to have to rent a car. 2. Golf: Located on a golfing complex, but fairly coastal is important to get summer lets. Most golfers will hire a car, offering this service can bring in extra revenue. 3. Luxury: Villa rentals to accommodate over 6 people can be good value to the holiday maker as the cost is shared. Time is mainly spent at the villa, so a good swimming pool and barbecue area is important. Most will hire a car, so a short drive to the beach is not such a negative. 4. Country: Inland country rentals have come into their own over the last few years, mainly due to better targeted marketing to walkers, artists, promotion of inland cities and events. Selecting your property: Professional Business Support has some of the best property deals available, many up to 50% below previously listed prices. We also have bank and developer release properties at incredibly low prices with financing in place. Such bargains ensure that when the markets return to normal your investment is set to rise. You can view these on our webpage, www.resales-spain.com . Financing: Making your investment pay its way should always take priority. It is important to make sure you are selecting the property for the right reasons. Don't be ruled by your heart, buying just because you like it - it must fulfil the criteria and the use you have in mind. It must come in at the best price possible; the more you pay, the higher your mortgage costs, the more it will eat into your profits. Furnishing: Do not furnish with cast-offs. It is well worth paying slightly more for good quality, than skimping on the furnishings. Whatever you spend will more than cover its costs with quality and repeat bookings. Furniture and soft furnishings must be good, clean, bright and colourful; likewise, the decoration must be kept in top condition. Insurance: Always make sure you have a good insurance policy in place, to cover all eventualities. Marketing: This is the most important factors, and quite often is one that gets overlooked. When you purchase a Buy-to-Let through Professional Business Support, you will have access to all of the above services, leaving you free to enjoy the rewards. For more information call 966 923 963.

The Most Haunted

There are a number of places on earth that will have your insides quaking with fear, no matter how brave you think you are. Yet, few can compare to the ten most haunted places in the world on this list. Berry Pomeroy Castle, Totness - Although it is associated with plenty of hair-raising stories, this centuries-old castle is most famous for being home to two well-renowned female spirits: the Blue Lady and the White Lady. The Blue Lady is said to be free-roaming and haunts throughout the entire castle. With her mysterious and somewhat spellbinding presence, she lures individuals into sections of the ruin. Needless to say, if you see her, don’t follow!

Berry

Pomeroy

Castle

The White Lady, on the other hand, is supposedly Margaret Pomeroy’s spirit. She was held captive by her envious sister and was left to die of starvation in the dungeons of the castle, where her presence lingers to this day. Sedlec Ossuary, Czech Republic - Located underneath Sedlec’s Cemetery Church of All Saints, this tiny Roman Catholic chapel serves as the final dwelling place of an estimated 40,000 to 70,000 individuals. Many of their skeletons and bones have been creatively arranged in order to give the chapel a more pleasing appearance.

Sedlec

Despite this brave attempt at keeping the creepiness away, Sedlec Ossuary has earned the title of being the most haunted place in the world, and as such, has lured over 200,000 tourists to the area every year. Clearly, tourists just love being spooked and look upon the experience as a unique holiday treat.

Ossuary Church

Catacombs, Paris, France - Paris is known to be the most romantic city in the world, yet few know that it is also one of the most haunted. Several years ago, in order to provide adequate living space for the growing population, the remains of the dead were discreetly deposited along the walls of the city’s underground passageways.

The

Catacombs

The Paris Catacombs, being of a somewhat controversial nature, have been the subject of much discussion and speculation. Many tourists, along with their guides, have had a lot of other-worldly encounters as they pass the seemingly empty passageways. Feelings of being grabbed, touched, and other unexplained, odd sensations have been reported, while plenty of photos taken show ghostly apparitions and orbs. Perhaps, this is the dead’s silent protest to being set aside just to open up the city for more residents. If so, then their protest is coming across loud and clear.

Paris

Borley Rectory, UK - located in a tiny village near Sudbury, was constructed for the Reverend Henry Bull in the year 1863. Said to be England’s Most Haunted House, the Borley Rectory is situated on a site where a monastery used to stand. Stories have it that a nun’s ghost can be seen patrolling the “Nun’s Walk” while she mourns the awful death of her lover. She and her beloved, who was a Borley Monastery monk, attempted to elope, but they were tracked down and captured in no time. She was thrown into and imprisoned in the cellars of the monastic buildings, while the monk was put to death for their sins. Talk about tough love!

Sudbury

Salem, Massachusetts, USA - Being the town where scores of people were accused of and punished for being witches, Salem surely deserves to be part of the list of the most haunted places in the world. The tragedy of the Witch Trials, which killed 19 alleged witches, happened over 400 years ago, but the horror still lingers in every corner of this place. The full story of what transpired during that time can be checked out at the Salem Witch Museum, while the spooky experience can be completed with a walk through the haunted grounds. Owing to its creepy past, Salem now serves as the gathering place of spook fanatics and horror enthusiasts all over the world.

Salem

Monte Cristo, New South Wales, Australia - When it comes to haunted mansions, few can compare to Australia’s Monte Cristo. Within the walls of this huge house, you’ll encounter unusual and ghostly voices, bodiless apparitions, floating ghosts, as well as phantom faces appearing out of nowhere. You should also gear yourself up for the sudden switching on and off of lights as you pass through the rooms.

What’s even scarier, if accounts are to be believed, is that you might even lose your breath and die if you step foot in the boys’ bedroom. No one really knows what’s behind the haunting, but the ghost of the owner, Mrs. Crawley, is said to be the eerie culprit.

Places In The World Aokigahara Forest, Japan - A forest that lies at the foot of Japan’s Mount Fuji, Aokigahara is translated as the Sea of Trees. Aside from being rumored to be infested with goblins, ghosts, monsters, and weird beasts, this most haunted place in the world is also Suicide Central, as well as the site of an incredible amount of paranormal activity. In the year 2002 alone, the number of bodies discovered within the forest reached an astonishing seventy eight! With an average of 30 suicides per year, the forest is counted as the third most famous suicide site in the world.

Whether the suicides can be attributed in part to the paranormal phenomena or other unrelated reasons, no one is certain. You can only be sure that walking through this forest will be a petrifying adventure. Bhangarh Fort, India - One of the most haunted places in the world is India’s Bhangarh Fort. Based on Indian legends, the palace is cursed in such a way that everyone who stays in it dies, with the soul remaining trapped within its walls for centuries without the possibility of a rebirth. Perhaps, the most intriguing part about the fort is that the houses in the said area can’t have roofs.

Bhangarh Fort India

This is because if a roof is built, it collapses for no logical reason. You might also want to heed the warning about not staying in the area after the sun sets. Aside from the restlessness and anxiety that may be experienced, a safe return from Bhangarh Fort isn’t guaranteed. New Orleans, Louisiana, USA - New Orleans is famous not only for being a sultry and vibrant place, but also for being one of the most haunted places in the world. Home to the widely-famous Queen of Voodoo, Marie Laveau, New Orleans has plenty to offer in the way of cemetery and ghost tours, museums, voodoo shops, and fearprovoking tales of vampires and demons. It’s no wonder that plenty of terrifying novels, like Anne Rice’s, are set in this little Louisiana town.

ady The Brown L

This portrait of "The Brown Lady" ghost is arguably the most famous and well-regarded ghost photograph ever taken. The ghost is thought to be that of Lady Dorothy Townshend, wife of Charles Townshend, 2nd Viscount of Raynham, residents of Raynham Hall in Norfolk, England in the early 1700s. It was rumoured that Dorothy, before her marriage to Charles, had been the mistress of Lord Wharton. Charles suspected Dorothy of infidelity. Although according to legal records she died and was buried in 1726, it was suspected that the funeral was a sham and that Charles had locked his wife away in a remote corner of the house until her death many years later.

Dorothy's ghost is said to haunt the oak staircase and other areas of Raynham Hall. In the early 1800s, King George IV, while staying at Raynham, saw the figure of a woman in a brown dress standing beside his bed. She was seen again standing in the hall in 1835 by Colonel Loftus, who was visiting for the Christmas holidays. He saw her again a week later and described her as wearing a brown satin dress, her skin glowing with a pale luminescence. It also seemed to him that her eyes had been gouged out. A few years later, Captain Frederick Marryat and two friends saw "the Brown Lady" gliding along an upstairs hallway, carrying a lantern. As she passed, Marryat said, she grinned at the men in a "diabolical manner." Marryat fired a pistol at the apparition, but the bullet simply passed through. This famous photo was taken in September, 1936 by Captain Provand and Indre Shira, two photographers who were assigned to photograph Raynham Hall for Country Life magazine.

Aokigahara

Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp, Oswiecim, Poland - Even without the misty apparitions, unseen but chilling presences, and other unexplainable phenomenon, this spot still packs a wallop of horror, terror, and fright. In the five years of its operations, from 1940 to 1945, the concentration camp has seen over 2 million deaths, a number which most historians consider to be a minimum, owing to the fact that no one can really be sure of the total body count during that most unfortunate time. Anyone who has set foot in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp will most likely report a feeling of overwhelming foreboding and melancholy, and given the history of the place, it isn’t so surprising when a visitor suddenly gives in to heart-wrenching sobs and leaves the tour group in a torrent of tears.

FORTUNA & ARCHENA by Sally Bengtsson If you are looking for a really relaxing day out with a difference, away from the coast, in real Spain, then why not take a trip up to the thermal spa towns of Fortuna and Archena. Situated in the north east of Murcia province, about 15 minutes from Murcia city, both towns are well known for their hot springs, which were discovered by the Romans and have been popular for centuries. The waters at Fortuna are prescribed for treating respiratory disorders and rheumatism but it is also said that they help to ease stress and various other ailments. The town, which has small peaceful streets, offers a hotel complex with hydrotherapy and beauty treatments alongside a huge pool complex, and a campsite with a pool and Jacuzzis.

minerals, namely iron and salt. Situated in the Ricote valley the surrounding countryside is the ideal contrast to the built up areas along the coast that most holiday-makers are used to.

As the water comes directly out of the ground at 36 degrees centigrade the spas have attracted visitors throughout time, and have a lot of history. In 1860, Juan Cascales Font began some renovations to the semi-abandoned spa of Fortuna whilst constructing a new hotel there, and during the Spanish Civil War the hotel spa served as a hospital to help wounded soldiers. By the 1990’s more and more people began visiting Fortuna for its therapeutic and tranquil waters. Many visitors came for the beauty or holistic medical treatments, as the waters contain rich

Iberian people are thought to have used the waters at Archena as early as the fifth century B.C. But it was the Romans who left more of a trace – excavations have uncovered remains of Roman thermal baths on the site of today’s spa. In the eighteenth century, these lands belonged to the Order of St. John, and the healing waters and their patron, Our Lady of Remedies, were sources of devotion. The existing chapel, La Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Salud, dates from 1878, once the land had passed into private hands.

Both Fortuna and Archena offer indoor and outdoor pools, and one of the nicest things you can do is enjoy a relaxing dip while gazing at the stars above you. Between May and September Archena even offers you the option of having a massage under the stars. As you wonder around the grassy areas between the pools you will find other people dressed in comfortable white dressing gowns, and ask yourself “why we can’t wear these all the time.”

This option is available in all the spas which are part of the Murcia Board of Tourism and Wellness Centres, and is the perfect way to moisturise your skin and recharge your batteries in a completely different way. The thermal pools are open from 10am to 8pm between October and may and until Midnight the rest of the year. You can go for the day or book for a night or more. New Movie Reviews Riddick Description

Left for dead on a sun-scorched planet, Riddick finds himself up against an alien race of predators. Activating an emergency beacon alerts two ships: one carrying a new breed of mercenary, the other captained by a man from Riddick's past.

October 2013

Action | Sci-Fi | Thriller Release date: OUT NOW! Critics Reviews Alone in the dark: “This unexpectedly extended sequence showcases some imaginative creature design and Riddick’s survival instincts before we get to the meat of the plot in which a bunch of the universe’s most ineffectual mercenaries arrive on the planet intent on collecting his head. This is more hunt and bait than straight action, and proves to be rather interesting, at least giving some relief from Diesel’s rather portentous noir voiceover.”

Description Set in the year 2154, where the very wealthy live on a manmade space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth, a man takes on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds.

Horror | Thriller Release date: OUT NOW! Critics Reviews Boomuk.net: “This sequel delivers a nice blend of watered down chills and humorous scenes. It also does well in filling in the blanks from the previous film, with a number of 'oh that's why that happened' moments littered throughout. Wan has done well with creating atmospheric titles considering the restrictions that the (extremely lucrative) 15 certificate market brings, but it would be great to see him let loose once again on a darker project like he did with the 18 rated original Saw, and really give an audience the heebie jeebies.”

Action | Drama | Sci-Fi Release date: OUT NOW! Critics Reviews DigitalSpy: “A sci-fi world this internally consistent and emotionally compelling is nothing to be sniffed at, and Blomkamp remains one of the most exciting directors working in the genre. Elysium is more generic than fans will hope for, but Damon's committed turn and its detailed, haunting vision of the future still resonate.” FoxNews.com: “For those who like their videogame-style sci-fi shoot-em-ups will have no problem here. If Blomkamp created a stronger balance between those two approaches, which at first appears he is doing, then perhaps “Elysium” would be far greater.

Readers Reviews by Simon Doonan

Doonan has witnessed models unable to work for fear of ghosts, gone deepsea fishing with a couturier pal and his jailbird companion, and watched Anna Wintour remain perfectly calm while the ceiling fell, literally, in the middle of Fashion Week. Once you start looking, he says, you’ll notice telltale signs of lunacy everywhere. Style insiders see patterns and trends in

everything; they suffer from outsize personality disorders and delusions of grandeur; and of course, they have a predilection for theatrical makeup and artfully destroyed clothing. No one is more suited to the asylum than the truly die-hard fashionista, after all, eccentricity and extremism are the foundations of great style.

“Simon Doonan's hysterical first row, firsthand observations are a mustread for fashionistas and non-fashionsitas alike.” “The fashion world is, in a word, hysterical! Simon Doonan is the one man who sees it and tells it like it (absurdly) is.” “Simon Doonan is the Bon Qui Qui of Fashion, stirring things up and reminding us to keep a sense of humor.”

Whitby Horror Festival Do You Dare? "The houses of the old town are all red-roofed and seemed piled up one over the other…" So wrote Bram Stoker in his famous novel Dracula. Without the influence of Whitby it is unlikely that Dracula would ever have been written. It was whilst staying in the small North East coast fishing town that Bram Stoker found the influence to begin creating the most famous figure in horror film and literature. Apart from being a central setting to the book, Stoker based many of the events in the novel on real life events from around the Whitby area. The enduring image of the ghostly ship the Demeter coming ashore and the huge black wolf jumping off the deck and running into the wilderness is often a staple point in film and TV adaptations of the book. However... ...As unlikely as it may seem, Stoker based both the ship and beast on information gained from talking to local townsfolk. The inhabitants would have been able to tell the writer of the Russian ship Dmitri which in events echoing that of the book was beached in the town’s port. As far as the huge black wolf is concerned there aren’t many Yorkshire folklorist’s that wouldn’t be able to tell you of the Barguest, the huge black phantom hound which according to legend stalks the Yorkshire Moors and has a particular liking for Whitby and surrounding areas. Perhaps the most important location that inspired Bram Stoker was the local library. It is here that Stoker first came across the name "Dracula" and thus a legend was born. Borrowing a book from the local library entitled, An Account of the Principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia (1820) By William Wilkinson. Bram Stoker took several notes from the book (now part of his papers housed at the Rosenbach Museum in Philadelphia). Wilkinson’s book includes a short section on a "Voivode Dracula" who fought

against the Turks. Though the information was sketchy, one item attracted Stokers attention. He copied it verbatim into his notes: footnote Dracula in Wallachian language means Devil. In the 112 years since the publication of Dracula, Whitby has settled rather comfortably into its role as Britain's premier spooky location. The Abbey looks down dolefully from its vantage point on the cliff, while the warren of narrow streets that wind down to the sea are pregnant with the promise of phantoms and skittering shapes, especially at dusk. The brash amusement arcades, seaside tat shops and fairground rides on the way down to the beach provide a hectic counterpoint to Whitby's dark heritage; but even amid the slot machines and fish and chip shops you'll find the Dracula Experience, rendering Stoker's novel down to a quick thrill-fix in the dark. If

you’re

one

of

t h o s e strange people who gets a kick out of scaring

selves silly, you’ll love the

Bram

Stoker International Film Festival. This festival of scary flicks is held every October. There’s everything a gore enthusiast could want – including screenings of classic and new horror movies, Q&A sessions with directors and an awards ceremony (think the Oscars, but scarier). Climax to the four-day scare-fest’ is the Vampire’s Ball, an extravaganza that promises illusionists, magic and distinctly dark surprises. Spookiness aside, though, Whitby is actually rather pretty with a myriad of narrow winding streets to explore. One place you shouldn’t miss is Whitby Abbey; climb the 199 steps to the top of the Gothic ruins and you’ll be treated to dramatic views of the coastline and North Sea.

3. THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE

1. THE SHINING Directed by Stanley Kubrick (1980) Kubrick's adaptation of Stephen King's novel about the Torrance family's headlong plunge into insanity during a secluded Colorado winter remains better known for its T-shirt quotables “Heeeere's Johnny!'' than as a beautiful and pleasing horror film. With Jack Nicholson's grand pirouette into murderous madness at its heart, it's one of the most artful horror films in history. Although initial response to the film was mixed, later critical assessment was more favorable and it is now listed among the greatest horror movies, while some have even viewed it as one of the greatest films of all time. Film director Martin Scorsese, writing in The Daily Beast, ranked it as one of the 11 scariest horror movies of all time.

2. THE EXORCIST

Directed by Tobe Hooper - (1974)

Directed by William Friedkin - (1973)

Truth is stranger than fiction...and it's a hell of a lot scarier, too. Based (like much of Psycho) on the horrific ritual murders committed by Ed Gein, Chainsaw looks, feels, and smells so much like a grainy, lowbudget documentary that it borders on snuff. Hooper says that when he settled on the film's title, ''I lost several friends. But I thought, they're putting so much energy into hating the title, maybe there's something there.'' Indeed there is; a copy of Chainsaw resides in the Museum of Modern Art.

A cat unexpectedly jumping from off camera is scary. But The Exorcist is so disturbing it will mess you up for months. Controversial and profane, The Exorcist remains the most viscerally harrowing movie ever made, not only because it dares to question the existence of God but because it has the cojones to put Satan in the body of a 12-year-old girl.

4. THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS Directed by Jonathan Demme - (1991) As Dr. Hannibal Lecter, Anthony Hopkins is a waking nightmare of seductive depravity, the sick, twisted serial killer America hates to love. Even with Hannibal the Cannibal safely locked away in his maximumsecurity cell, Jodie Foster's FBI trainee Clarice Starling is as helpless as a lamb. ''Great villains are subversive, audiences go and see them because they feel uncomfortably attracted to them,'' says Scott Glenn, who plays Starling's seen-it-all FBI mentor in Silence. ''To this day I still have nightmares about it.'' Join the club.

5. JAWS Directed by Steven Spielberg - (1975) ''Is it true that most people get attacked by sharks in about three feet of water?'' When this doom-drenched gem, the highest-grossing film on our list, hit theatres, it gave new meaning to the phrase red tide. Weeks over schedule and dizzyingly over budget, Jaws caused Spielberg more than his share of headaches, especially due to his temperamental star. No, not Richard Dreyfuss, but Bruce, the 24foot-long malfunctioning animatronic great white named after Spielberg's lawyer. ''The fact that the shark didn't work was an artistic blessing in disguise,'' says Spielberg. ''It forced me to be Hitchcockian.''

The Batmobile The Batmobile evolved along with the character from comic books to television and films reflecting and evolving the cars technology. Kept in the Batcave and accessed through a hidden entrance, the gadget-laden car is used by Batman in his crime-fighting activities. The Batmobile made its first appearance in Detective Comics #27 (May, 1939). Then a red sedan, it was simply referred to as "his car". Soon it began featuring an increasingly prominent bat motif, typically including distinctive wing-shaped tailfins. Armored in the early stages of Batman's career, it has been customized over time into a sleek street machine. The car's design gradually evolved. It became a "specially built high-powered auto" by Detective Comics #30, and in Batman #5, it began featuring an ever-larger bat hood ornament and an ever-darker paint job. Eventually, the predominant designs included a large, darkcoloured body and bat-like accessories, including large tailfins scalloped to resemble a bat's wings. Batman No. 5 (Spring 1941) introduced a long, powerful, streamlined Batmobile with a tall scalloped fin and an intimidating bat head on the front. Three pages after it was introduced, it was forced off a cliff by the Joker to crash in the ravine below. However, an identical Batmobile appeared in the next story in the same issue. In mid-1985, a special variation of the Super Powers toyline Batmobile appeared in both Batman and Detective Comics. This design had a full set of front and rear canopies, "Coke-bottle" sides, integrated fins, and generally rounder features, just like the toy. The only difference between this car and its toy counterpart is the nose, which was occasionally drawn to appear longer and more pointed. In Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, the Batmobile has been modified into a tank-like armoured riot control vehicle, complete with machine guns shooting rubber bullets, a large cannon mounted on the front, and large tank treads in place of tires. According to Batman's narration, the only thing that can penetrate its armour "isn't from this planet." The car had been the sole property of its creator, legendary car customizer George Barris. In November 2012 Barris Kustom and George Barris announced the sale of the Batmobile at the Barrett-Jackson car show and auction held in Scottsdale, Arizona. The vehicle fetched â‚Ź3.17 million on January 19, 2013. Barris said he had been offered large sums for the car in the past but had never considered selling before. He agreed to sell this time, he said, because he thought it was time to move the car out of his studio and put it someplace where more people could enjoy it.

For all your home and business computer needs Welcome to this month’s computer article written by Richard from BlueMoon Solutions

It’s update time again - AVG this time! Last month, on the 4th September, AVG released their latest instalment of their free anti-virus program; this one is called AVG Free 2014 (how do they come up with these version numbers?!!). Anyway the new version is very similar in look and feel to the old version (AVG free 2013) so you shouldn’t have any difficulty using it. I recommend that you download and install the latest version to ensure that you have the most up to date protection and you can download this instalment from the following address…

terms of the actual number of viruses detected Avast is no better than the free version of AVG – although I have to say that the latest version of AVG (2014) is not yet listed, but it’s hard to believe that it will be any worse than the previous version. The report shows that Avast is more “usable”

h t t p : / / w w w. a v a s t . c o m / e n gb/index

http://free.avg.com/eu-en/freeantivirus-download …once downloaded just run the installation and your old version will automatically be removed as part of the installation routine. It’s probably worth looking again at which antivirus programs are “the best” again as its been around 12 months since I last did the research. There is a website www.av-test.org that regularly tests all of the leading anti-virus products against each other to show how they compare so, it’s always worth looking to see if you have adequate protection. Of the free antivirus products Avast again comes up as the best overall, as it did last year. However, in

than AVG giving it a rating of 100% over AVG’s 98% and although I recognise that this could be very subjective, my personal opinion is that AVG is more “usable”, certainly in my experience it just sits there in the background doing its thing, where as I tend to find that Avast announces that it has done something more often. The long and the short of it is that it doesn’t really matter - as long as you have anti-virus installed, up to date and working then you have a good chance of staying clear of nasties on your computer.

Why don’t you use this prompt as the opportunity that you needed to go and turn on your computer and ensure that firstly it has anti-virus installed and secondly that it’s up to date. When I say “up to date” I mean not only the virus definitions (the things that are downloaded every day in response to new viruses and new mutations in the wild) but I mean also your anti-virus program – in this case the latest version of AVG is 2014 and the latest version of Avast is version 8, available from the following link…

I don’t usually recommend that people steer clear of any particular anti-virus product as in the whole it really comes down to personal opinion, however I will make the exception with regards to Microsoft’s Security Essentials. Looking at it in the same test as the other two products mentioned above, it scores a lowly 65% of 0 day threats – these are new viruses (compare that to AVG and Avasts 96% for the same thing) and has the unenviable award for being bottom in the review! It really is worth steering clear of.

You’ve got to be joking

I was sitting at the bar staring at my drink, contemplating, when a really big trouble-making Scumbag steps up next to me, grabs my drink and gulps it down in one swig. "Well, what you gonna do about it?" he says, menacingly, as I burst into tears. "Come on, man," the Scumbag says, "I didn't think you'd CRY you big baby. I can’t stand to see a man crying." "This is the worst day of my life," I said. "I'm a complete failure. I was late to a meeting and my boss fired me. When I went to the car park, I found me car had been stolen and I don't have any insurance. I left my wallet in the Taxi I took home. I found my girl friend in bed with the gardener, and then my dog attacked me." "So I came to this Pub to work up the courage to put an end to it all. I buy a drink, I drop a Rat-Poison capsule in and sit here watching the poison dissolve. Then you show up and drink the whole bloody thing on me! "Anyway, enough about me, how's your day going?"

I met a girl at the blood bank yesterday.

My girlfriend bought me the Karma Sutra for my birthday. It's put me in a very awkward position.

Mick and Paddy are reading headstones near a church. Mick turns to Paddy and says, "Jazus, there's a bloke here who was a 152!" Paddy asks, "What was his name?" Mick replies, "Miles from London."

She was nice but she wasn't my type.

My wife says she is going to leave me and go and live with a llama. Alpaca bags

Just had a letter from the British parachute association, inviting me to visit them. No appointment needed, just drop in.

Paddy called the RSPCA and said, "I've just found a suitcase in the woods containing a fox and four cubs." "That's terrible," replied the operator, "Are they moving?" "I'm not sure, to be honest" Paddy said, "But I suppose that would explain the suitcase."
