ere we are on edition 97, nearly at our centenary and boy, do we feel old! As always, we have beavered away to bring you the best of the best! We have a fantastic guide to the hot topic of the moment, the Medical Reforms here in Spain telling you what is, and isn’t going to happen come September 1st. If ghosts and spooky goings on are your thing, then we have a rundown of the top 10 most haunted hotels in the UK including a short story on why it’s said to be haunted, but then again, who would want to stay somewhere that’s haunted!! It is of course a summer of sport, last month we wrote about the Euro football championships and of course, we couldn’t leave the Olympics out. The feature on London 2012 tells you all about the history of the Olympics and you can also find short biographies on the rising stars of Team GB. For some people it may all be about the sport, but let’s face it, summer is well and truly here, I may be sat here writing this in a cool, air conditioned office, but outside it’s a very warm 40c. But, if you don’t want to sit around watching shot putters, runners or high jumpers then why not fire up the BBQ and cook some of the fantastic (tried and tested…) recipes we have included this month. You could of course have a short break away; Sally has a wonderful write-up on the high flying Marbella. We also have the usual movie & book reviews, Inspekta Gadget with his reviews and of course our health guides which this month focuses on the benefits of Cherries, help with anti-aging and all about SPF ratings. If you like to challenge yourself, then don’t forget to head over to our Brain Training section. You can also do the quizzes on the TKO Radio page if you think your music knowledge is up to scratch! Right, enough of this, there is much more to read than me babbling on. That said, if you ever have any suggestions or comments on the magazine, send them over to editor@thejungledrums.es

History of the Olympic Games The Ancient Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece thousands of years ago. Back then, the Games were held in honour of the God Zeus. The aim of the Games was to show the physical qualities of the athletes who competed and to encourage good relations between cities across Greece. At first, the Ancient Olympic Games lasted just one day, and had just one event – a running race. Over time, the Games were extended and lasted up to five days. Only men were allowed to compete and only unmarried women were allowed in the stadium to watch. Some women were so keen to watch the competition that they dressed up as men and sneaked into the stadium! Winners at the Ancient Games had two victory ceremonies. In the first ceremony they received a palm branch and had red ribbons tied around their hands and head. At the second ceremony, an olive tree wreath was placed on the winner’s head. According to history books, the Ancient Games were banned by Emperor Theodosius in 393AD because he didn’t think they were fitting for a Christian empire. The Modern Olympic Games More than 1500 years later, a young Frenchman called Baron Pierre de Coubertin decided to create the modern Olympic Games. He thought that the Olympic Games should be about bringing together sport, culture and education. In 1894, he founded the International Olympic Committee and together they started to organise the first Olympic Games of modern times. It took them just two years, and in 1896, the first modern Olympic

Games were held in Athens, Greece. A total of 241 athletes from 14 countries took part and the winners received a silver medal and an olive branch. When did women first take part? At the first modern Olympic Games there were still no female competitors – in fact women didn’t compete until the next Olympic Games, which happened four years later in Paris. The Olympic Games today The International Olympic Committee still oversee the organisation of the Olympic Games, but now the the summer Games are held in a different city every four years. The last Olympic Games were in Beijing, China, in August 2008. The Games today are much larger than they used to be, and they last much longer – in Beijing they lasted 16 days and athletes competed in 28 different sports! In Ancient Greece, the Government and wealthy and famous Greek citizens paid for the Games. Today, the Games cost much

more money and they have got larger sponsors, or companies that pay to be involved. These companies help to fund the cost of the Games. Since 1968, each Summer Olympic Games has been followed by a Paralympic Games for athletes with a disability. What about the Winter Olympic Games? When the modern Olympic Games first started, only summer sports were included. In the 1920s, snow and ice sports became popular and so, in 1924 the International Olympic Committee decided to hold the first Winter Olympic Games in Chamonix, France. The Games were popular, with 258 athletes from 16 countries taking part. Now the Winter Olympic Games happen every four years. The last Games were in Turin, Italy in 2006 – more than 2500 athletes competed, representing 80 countries including Madagascar, Brazil, and Thailand!

Medical Reforms In Spain

As from 1st September 2012, all citizens who live legally and contribute to the tax system in Spain, both nationals and foreigners, and who have an income of less than 100,000 € a year, will have the right to a health card. Foreigners from the European Union or from countries which have a bilateral agreement with Spain are covered. Youngsters under the age of 26 can be covered provided that they are living in the home of a person contributing to the Social Security, and depend economically on that person. Immigrants in Spain illegally will no longer get a health card. Before the new legislation, they were given a health card if they registered on the Padron election list, but now that is no longer enough. However they will still be able to get assistance in the Emergency departments, paediatrics up to the age 18, and when pregnant. Those covered can be separated into four groups:1. Those working and affiliated to the Social Security 2. Pensioners 3. Those obtaining unemployment benefit 4. Those whose unemployment benefit has run out, and who are registered in the corresponding office. Those who are not working and have income of more than 100,000 € a year will have to wait for special agreements for their social security payments. Patients will now be called on to pay for part of the cost for prosthesis, dietary products and non-emergency transport in ambulances. All people who fall outside these catogories will need Private Medical Insurance – not only for medical treatment, but also to obtain (or even renew!) a residencia certificate. The majority of British that are affected are those who have taken early retirement, therefore are

8

resident here but are not contributing nor are they above pensionable age. Holiday makers should never leave the UK without the EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card) which has replaced the old E111 form. We supply full private medical insurance cover from Caser, enabling all insured persons to have full access to San Jaime Hospital, which offers top quality healthcare 365 days a year, and has more than 400 professionals. The staff are fluent in several languages, with an inhouse translator available if necessary. If you need private medical cover, or just want help and advice, please feel free to contact us at Pro Business Support on 966 923 963. Have you had to carry out a will or inheritance at any time since 2009, and paid a large amount of tax because you were/are a nonresident? If so, please contact us, as there is a possibility of reclaiming the majority of this amount back from the Comunidad Valenciana. As always, each person’s case is different, so we will do a free feasibility study, with no obligation on your behalf, to see if your case fits within the stipulated criteria. Give us a call on 966 923 963.

Ten Steps to Slow Down Aging Aging is a complex process that involves many areas of your body. It's unlikely that any one product or pill could cure all of the ailments of aging. However, there are things you can do that not only will help you age more slowly but will improve your quality of life. Your best bet for a long and healthy life is to: 1. Eat a varied and healthy diet. Include plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grain foods. Fiber, calcium, iron, magnesium, and vitamins all play a part in keeping your body functioning at its best. Drink lots of fluids to maintain healthy skin and flush out waste. Eating right will help you maintain a healthy weight. 2. Exercise every day. Exercise improves appetite, makes healthy bones, gives you a better emotional outlook and improves digestion and circulation. Exercise makes you stronger and helps you lose weight. 3. Seeking prompt medical care when you're ill or injured. Listen to your body and take care of any little problems before they become big

problems. Get screened for diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

ties to your family and friends are crucial to healthy aging.

4. Use sunscreen to prevent sunburn. Professionals agree that one of the most significant factors contributing to aging is chronic inflammation of the skin.

9. Don’t let fears and worries dominate your life. A worried mind is not at peace and robs you of zest and energy which you need to maintain youthfulness.

5. Quit smoking and avoid secondhand smoke. Smoking has very damaging effects and dramatically increases your risk of getting cancer and heart disease.

10. Keep cells youthful with antioxidants. Antioxidants are found in a full range of fruits and vegetables, as well as in some meat, like fish. Although, our bodies produce its own antioxidants, the level of product declines over time because of environmental factors and through the aging process. You can also take anti-oxidant supplements or even anti-oxidant teas. Do all you can to be healthy and in doing so you will age slower. If you have any questions about products that claim to slow or reverse aging ask your doctor. He or she can help you sort through the information and get the facts.

6. Manage stress. Stress is a part of everyday life. Develop ways to help you cope and adjust to situations in your life that may cause you stress. The situation isn’t the problem . . . it’s how you react to it. 7. Look for ways to improve overall well-being and enthusiasm for life. Be curious and creative, which will encourage you to learn new things. You can also use humor and laughter to help you age well and live long. 8. Keep strong relationships. Maintaining close

Everything you need to know about SPF We all know it's important, but understanding exactly what, when and how much sun cream to apply is a very grey area. From what SPF means to how often you should be applying, protecting yourself from burning, premature ageing and skin cancer can be a confusing business.

or after swimming or sweating. The first application of the day should be done 15 minutes before you head out into the sun. This will ensure the cream has soaked in properly and created a protective barrier, which is then topped up throughout the day. How much sun cream should you use? Most people only apply a quarter to half the necessary amount of sun cream needed to prevent burning! An average build person should use the minimum of 1oz, which is about a shot glass full, of sun cream all over. Reading the label When buying your sun cream it's important to read all of it and not just focus on the factor. Always opt for a broad spectrum sun cream as this covers and protects you from UVA and UVB rays - both of which can lead to sunburn, premature ageing and skin cancer. When is it safe to sunbathe? We all know the sun is at its highest around lunchtime, but the experts have lengthened the time to stay out of the sun from 10am-4pm this year as this is when the sun is at its strongest and most harmful. If you are venturing out into the sun during these times make sure you and the kids have at least SPF30 on, are wearing sunglasses and have a hat!

What does SPF actually mean? SPF stands for the amount of time you can spend out in the sun before burning, however there is much more to it than just that. A person prone to burning within 10 minutes of being in the sun would only be protected for 150 minutes if they were wearing SPF15. This might seem like a long time, but the calculation doesn't take into account whether you are moving about and sweating. Sun cream is easily wiped off either by our clothes, a towel or, most commonly, our sweat, so it's essential to keep topping up your protection. What factor should you use? Despite reports, the difference between SPF factor 35 and 50 is relatively small with SPF 30 deflection 96.7%, while the higher SPF is less than 2% better at 98%. Those who have pale or sensitive skin and small children should opt for SPF50, but on the whole, most people should get on fine with SPF 30-35.

Kids & the sun Most UV damage occurs when we are younger as skin is much more sensitive so as much as they might hate it, applying a thick layer of sun cream on to your kids is essential. Opt for at least SPF20 and encourage them to spend time playing in the shade or under an umbrella. Areas to watch out for sunburn are the face, backs of the ears and feet. Even ‘waterproof' sun cream should be reapplied at least every two hours and after swimming. The British Skin Foundation is currently running a petition to bring in standardised policies in nurseries and schools for the re-application of sun cream throughout the day. For more information visit: Britishskinfoundation.org.uk.

Despite selling SPF factors of up to 100 in America, there have been calls to cap it at 50 now because it is confusing people and even the highest factor doesn't provide 100% protection from the sun!

Anti-ageing & the sun UV is the biggest cause of premature ageing and shockingly one day in the sun can reverse the use and expense of many months of anti-ageing products. Come rain or shine, wearing SPF daily on your face and neck will pay dividends in the end. However, just because your face cream offers SPF protection doesn't mean you shouldn't apply sun cream over the top, especially if you are spending long periods of time in the sun.

When should you apply sun cream? Most experts agree that sun cream should be applied every two hours,

Interestingly sun creams that promise to help anti-ageing can just mean it is a higher factor or contains a protective ingredient like vitamin E, so it is always worth reading the label if you have time.

Cherries 4. Cherries are rich in vitamins C, E, potassium, magnesium, iron, folate and fiber.

8. Cherries are a good source of fiber which is important for digestive health.

5. Cherries are referred to as “brain food”, aiding in brain health and in the prevention of memory loss.

9. Cherries are a great snack or dessert choice important for weight-maintenance.

6. Because cherries contain anthocyanins, they can reduce inflammation and symptoms of arthritis and gout.

10. Because of their powerful anti-inflammatory benefits, cherries are said to reduce pain and joint soreness for runners and athletes after workouts.

7. Eating cherries reduces the risk of diabetes.

Looking for a new Hobby? Eileen Wallace has lived in Spain now for over 10 years, and loves having made this country her home. Since retiring here to the Costa Blanca, Eileen decided to start to paint again, having not painted since her youth. While checking out different painting ideas she discovered a technique developed by an American lady, Donna Dewberry called ‘One Stroke Painting Technique’. Once she had started to use this technique Eileen was totally hooked and has been painting using this method for over 8 years. It is a lovely painting technique, easy to learn with great results. Eileen has travelled to the USA and spent time painting with Donna Dewberry and has also taken the teaching courses to be able to pass on this amazing technique to others. Eileen is the only qualified ‘One Stroke Certified Instructor’ (OSCI) who is active on the Costa Blanca and hold classes of 6 people at her home on Friday mornings from 10am to 12 noon and 2pm to 4 pm. So why not give her a call and come along and try it for yourself, all you need to bring is YOU. All paints and surfaces are supplied for the classes and your painted project is yours to take home. One stroke painting is a very creative painting technique, it is much quicker to learn and in my classes you will be taught how to blend, shade and highlight all in one stroke, you will be amazed how quickly you can master this technique and bring out the artist in you. You do not need any painting or drawing skills to learn One Stroke making it the ideal choice for a new hobby. This style of painting can be use on almost anything – greetings cards, candles, glass, plates, plastic, vases, tin/metal, even walls and furniture the possibilities are endless. Whether you want to paint just as a hobby for yourself, or create things to sell, this is fun and easy to do, and once you have started you won’t want to stop.

Five people (3 girls: Katie, Anna, & Grace and 2 boys Chris & Michael) are going to the beach. Each of them brought something different, a different colored towel, plans to do something and eat something. Figure out what each person brought with them, the color of their towel, what they will do at the beach, and what they will eat. Good luck!

*The purple towel got a lot of use from the girl who was tanning. *The sunscreen had to be waterproof because the user got really wet. *Of course the surfer had to bring his surfboard from home. *Eating her snocone in the shade of her umbrella kept it from melting on her blue towel. *Ketchup, from his snack, dripped all over a boy's red towel leaving red drops all over it. *Only the boys got more than their feet wet. *Katie asked Anna if she thought the owner of the yellow towel

would mind if Katie put her cooler on his towel while he surfed. *The seashell collector spread out her findings on her pink towel. *Anna remembered her sand bucket but didn't have enough money to get a snocone after paying for her nachos. *The bucket wasn't used for playing in the sand. *The hamburger was ordered with just mayo, mustard, and pickles. *The hotdog eater had a little sunscreen taste to the dog because it dripped from his water soaked hair. *Being so fair skinned Michael had to be sure to use his high spf sunscreen when out in the water. *The girl who played in the sand used her umbrella to shade her. *The contents of the cooler contained Coke, chips, water, and ice. *Anna is worried about wrinkles and doesn't like to tan.

Strange but true! Britain rises and falls centimeters every 12 hours and 25 minutes! The strength of the ocean tides crashing around Great Britain cause the island to move. Every 12 hours and 25 minutes the island rises and falls centimeters. It goes unnoticed, though, because the movement is so small and subtle. That's not the only thing that changes with the tide, though. Scientists have described Loch Ness as a giant level. The combination of the direct pull from the gravity of the moon and the sun makes the Loch Ness in Scotland rise and fall 1.5 millimeters. Scientists found this out by placing sensors all around the lake. They found that the data spiked twice a day, corresponding to the pull of the sun and the moon. Scientists are interested in measuring other lakes around the world to understand how the Earth’s crust deforms as a result of ocean movements.

The CIA spent $20 million on a cat equipped to spy on the Soviets, but then it got hit by a taxi!

The acoustic kitty was a project launched by the CIA in the 1960s. They attempted to use a cat in spy missions. Some of their targets were the Kremlin and the Soviet embassies. A battery and a microphone were implanted in the cat along with an antenna in its tail. It would have allowed the cat to record information and sound from its surroundings inconspicuously. The problem was that the cat would get hungry and get distracted because of it. To fix the issue, they put it through another surgery attempting to correct its behavior. The Surgical and training expenses were estimated to have been up to $20 million. The first mission for the cat was to eavesdrop on a conversation between two men in a park outside of the Soviet compound on Wisconsin Avenue in Washington D.C. The cat was released nearby, but hit by a taxi cab and killed almost instantly. All other tests, after that failed. Soon after, the project was declared a total loss and was completely cancelled by 1966.

The 13th day of the month is more likely to be a Friday than any other day of the month. This is because of the way the Gregorian calendar works. The Gregorian calendar has 400-year cycles with the same pattern of days. Thus, in the 400-year cycle there will be 688 Fridays that will be the 13th day of a month. Just slightly more than Sunday and Wednesday at 687. In numerology, the number twelve is considered the number of completeness. There are twelve months in a year, twelve hours on a clock, twelve tribes of Israel, and twelve apostles of Jesus to name a few examples. The number thirteen was considered irregular and countered the completeness of the number twelve. A superstition derived from the last supper is that if 13 people sit at a table, one of them will die. Thirteen was seen as an unlucky number and Friday was seen as an unlucky day. Many think that people combined the two and believed it to be incredibly unlucky. It wasn’t mentioned before the 19th century as the most unlucky day, though. However, the 13th day of the month is more likely to fall on a Friday than any other day of the month. In Spanish speaking countries, Tuesday the 13th is the unluckiest day.

Marbella

by Sally Bengtsson

mous! fa d an ch i r e th or f A magnet

Situated right in the heart of the Costa del Sol, Marbella stands between the Atlantic and the Sierra Blanca mountains, enjoying an appealing micro-climate, with plenty of sunny weather. The climate and weather in Marbella is extremely mild, with temperatures averaging around 19°C / 66°F year-round. This chic holiday resort is a favoured get-away among the rich and famous and it’s not hard to see why. There’s an endless supply of world-class restaurants, luxury hotels, spectacular golf courses, fashionable shops, a lovely marina and a vast number of lively bars and clubs to keep you entertained all day and all night long. Marbella may be the most famous place on the Costa del Sol but there are numerous other areas that are well worth a visit! There is a wealth of things on offer in the surrounding region with each destination offering its own individual qualities. You can visit the ‘white village’ Mijas and wander the cobbled streets, dine in the mountains at Benahavis or go down to Gibraltar to see the rock and the monkeys that reside there. With the N340 coastal motorway travelling right across the Coast it is extremely easy for those that are unfamiliar with the area to navigate their way around. Besides the typical Andalusian cultural events, a variety of annual festivals are held in Marbella, mainly between June and October; other events are held sporadically. Festivals dedicated to music include the Marbella International Opera Festival held in August since 2001, the Marbella Reggae Festival in July, and the Festival International de Jazz de Marbella in June in different locations around the city—amongst them the beach, aboard a boat or in the Old Town. The area also hosts the Marbella International Film Festival, the Spanish Film Festival and the Festival of Independent Theatre. To provide venues for these and other events, the city has cultural facilities both publicly and privately managed, such as the Auditorium of Constitution Park, the Ingenio Cultural Center, the Teatro Ciudad de Marbella or Black Box Theatre, among others. In addition, there is a music conservatory, a cinema club, and several movie theatres showing foreign films dubbed into Castilian. The International Contemporary Art Fair I, also known as MARB ART, was held in Marbella in 2005, exhibiting works of photography, painting, sculpture and graphic design by over 500 artists; it has been held annually since at the Palace of Congresses. The following year the 2006 extension of the Ateneo de Málaga Marbella (Atheneum of Málaga Marbella) opened, dedicated to the development of artistic and cultural activities. In 2009, the International Art Festival of Marbella and the Festival of All Dance I were successful. Since 2009 the city has been home to the University of Marbella, the first private university in the province of Málaga and the only one in Andalusia where classes are taught in English.

Historical District and Downtown Marbella was called Salduba in the time of the Romans and re-named Marbil-la under the Muslim rule, and walking through the Historical District is like taking a small trip through the past, where the Arab roots and traces of Christianity come together. For example, the Iglesia de la Encarnación (Church of the Incarnation) was raised just a few metres from the murallas (walls) of the Caliph's castle. The streets wind through cobblestones, immaculate façades, and balconies decorated with flower-boxes full of geraniums and carnations. There are priceless tiny, typically-Andalusian squares and nooks and crannies, such as the Balcón de la Virgen (Balcony of the Virgin Mary), set in the window of an old white-washed house that today houses a restaurant. The hub-bub of daily life—work, business, shopping, and the coming and goings of people—begins in the Avenida Ricardo Soriano and extends throughout the entire downtown area. But calm reigns again once you reach the Paseo Marítimo (promenade), where tranquility, the ocean breeze, hammocks, and tanned bodies are the star of the show. Puerto Banús Jose Banús was the promoter of all of New Andalusia and of course of the Marina that carries his name, which is one of the most important ports on the Mediterranean coast. There are 915 tying-in points on the two piers, Ribera and Benabolá. In the clear blue waters the most luxurious yachts in the world have anchored and slept: the Nabila of the magnate Adnan Kashoggi, the Príncipe Abdulazis, the Tritona, and the Shaf. The port has been declared a Centre of International Tourist Interest and among its many honours has the Gold Medal for Merit in Tourism. Shopping, having a coffee on one of the terraces, walking along the piers, and, of course, enjoying the night-time atmosphere by dancing until dawn or drinking a cocktail while gazing at the star-covered bay are just some of the activities you have to choose from. And every year more visitors come, making it a must-see in the summer months for celebrities and people from the tabloid world, including photographers who snap their celebrity shots.

Notable residents Ousted Cuban president Fulgencio Batista died in Guadalmina, near Marbella, in 1973. Rick Parfitt OBE, legendary British rock musician from Status Quo, lives in the mountains just outside Marbella. Actor and HI-NRG popstar, Divine (Harris Glenn Milstead), vacationed in Marbella from 1985 to 1987. In 1981 English actress Joan Collins accepted her career-making role in the hit prime time melodrama Dynasty while living in her Marbella vacation home. Sean Connery lived in Marbella, where he was regularly seen playing golf when not filming. He left following disagreements with the local press. English writer Vincent Cronin has had a home in Marbella for decades. Arms dealer Monzer al-Kassar was a longtime resident until his imprisonment, and has been nicknamed "The Prince of Marbella". Britains Top 10 Haunted Hotels

July 2012

Visiting a haunted house or castle is all very well, but if you really want to do the “ghost thing” you know you’ll just have to stay overnight. That’s when the ghosts come out. Britain is blessed with a number of haunted hotels so, if you’re feeling brave, read on and take your pick from our Top Ten.

The Kirkstone Inn At almost 1,500 ft, the Kirkstone Inn in Cumbria is the third highest pub in England. It offers spectacular views over some of the Lake District scenery that was immortalised by the poetry of William Wordsworth. But that’s not all. It’s haunted too! Dating back to the 15th century, the inn has had plenty of time to pick up some ghosts and quite a few have been spotted in and around it. Some are believed to be the spirits

of unlucky travellers who died while making a perilous journey through the difficult mountain terrain. One ghost is believed to be that of a woman who murdered her own child. Another, that of a 17th century coachman, was even captured in a photograph taken by a family staying at the inn in 1993. But he’s not there any longer. He is said to have followed the bemused tourists home and now lives with them as a member of the family!

Castle Stuart Close to the battlefield of Culloden, where the attempt of the Highlander armies to restore Bonnie Prince Charlie to the throne of Great Britain finally met its bloody end, Castle Stuart is redolent with history. Built originally in the 16th century, it was recently converted into a luxury hotel. Of course, no castle is complete without its retinue of ghosts and, in this, Castle Stuart does not disappoint. One brave soul is even said to have taken £20 from the Earl of Moray to stay in the Castle’s East Tower turret in order to prove it was not haunted. He was found dead in the castle grounds the next morning, having leapt from the window in the middle of the night!

Schooner Hotel The Schooner Hotel on the Northumberland coast boasts of being the most haunted hotel in Britain. Its guests frequently report strange noises, electrical devices turning themselves on or off and doors opening and closing of their own accord. The hotel was featured in an episode of the television series Most Haunted and occasionally hosts ghost-themed special events.

Jamaica Inn The Jamaica Inn in Cornwall was made famous by the Daphne du Maurier novel of the same name. Its long and shady history stretches back to the mid 18th century when it was a favoured haunt of the local smugglers. The inn now houses a large collection of old smuggling artefacts which will help you conjure up the atmosphere of that era. With such a lawless background, you would expect one or two untimely deaths to be associated with the building and perhaps a restless spirit or two to be lingering on the scene. Indeed, quite a few ghosts are believed to inhabit the Inn including that of at least one murder victim.

Chequers Inn This small but pleasantly wellpreserved inn in Smarden, Kent, which has a history dating back to the 14th century, features its very own haunted room inhabited by the ghost of a soldier from the Napoleonic wars. Although he managed to survive Napoleon, the wiles of a local lass were too much for him. On his return from campaigning, she plied him with drink, seduced him, and, once she had him abed and asleep, tried to rob him. He woke up mid-robbery, however, and, in the ensuing struggle, the unscrupulous female managed to inflict a fatal knife-wound on the unfortunate lad. His aggrieved ghost still makes an appearance periodically.

The Black Swan Hotel The Black Swan Hotel in Devizes has a long history dating back to the 15th century, one that is richly evoked by its thick timbered structure and historical décor. It also has a panoply of ghosts including the sorrowful spirit of a young woman who wanders through the walls, and two detached legs which have been seen walking around without any sign of a body!

Langham Hotel The Langham hotel in London, an elegant Victorian building once owned

by the BBC, is believed to house many ghosts, some of which have been spotted by BBC staff. Room 333 is said to be the most haunted in the hotel, being often visited by the spirit of a German nobleman who lived there for a time before throwing himself to his death from the window after being rejected by his true love.

Dalhousie Castle Hotel Dalhousie Castle, on the outskirts of Edinburgh, is a medieval castle which has been successfully converted into an awardwinning luxury hotel. Brimming with features, such as its very own spa and falconry centre, the hotel is also home to a number of ghosts. The one seen most frequently by staff is that of Lady Catherine who, after conducting an affair with the castle’s 16th century owner, is said to have been imprisoned and starved to death in one of the upstairs rooms by his aggrieved wife.

Ostrich Inn The Ostrich Inn in Slough has an extremely sinister history. In the 14th century, its former owners, an unscrupulous couple by the name of Jarman, had the nasty habit of plying their guests with drink, inviting them to sleep in their “special” room, then murdering the poor unfortunates in their sleep with the help of a secret trapdoor in the floor. The Jarmans are believed to have murdered around 60 unfortunate travellers in this way before eventually being caught and hanged. The restless spirits of some of their victims are said to have remained, however. Today’s landlords are much more hospitable. They offer guests guided tours of the hotel and promise not to murder them in their sleep.

Holt Hotel The Holt Hotel in Oxford is said to be haunted by the ghost of legendary highwayman Claude du Vall. After his execution in 1670 at the age of 27, his epitaph read as follows: Here lies Du Vall. Reader, if male thou art, Look to thy purse. If female, to thy heart. The spirit of this notorious gentleman is said to favour room 3 in particular so be sure and stay there if you want to meet him.

The Jungle Drums

The key target groups are young drivers, young families with young children looking to get themselves a second or even third car, and also 'best agers', i.e. customers who are rather cost sensitive and have a rational approach to cars on one hand but high demands for quality, design and safety on the other. Two new, three cylinder 1.0 litre petrol engines will be available after the Citigo's launch. The engines and the transmission have been designed to provide optimum economy in cities and their surroundings. Reaching the operating temperature even on short distances, the engines are highly economical. The highly economical Green tec version offers an average consumption of 4.2ltr per 100km. Besides the manual transmission that is available from launch, Ĺ koda will offer a five-speed automatic transmission later in 2012 as an alternative to make this new small vehicle even more comfortable. Safety is enhanced by the 'City Safe Drive', a new brake assistance system based on a laser sensor that is activated automatically at speeds below 30kmh to identify a danger of collision. Depending on the speed and the traffic situation, this automatic braking solution may completely prevent a collision or at least reduce its seriousness. The risk of bumping into the car ahead is thus reduced significantly in city traffic. Along with the Volkswagen up!, the Ĺ koda Citigo is currently the only car in the small vehicle segment to offer the emergency braking functionality.

BlueMoon Solutions is the computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca. We aim to provide high quality computer services at realistic prices - we specialise in providing services to small businesses and home users

For all your home and business computer needs Welcome to this month’s computer article written by Richard from BlueMoon Solutions

Backups Are Important We all know that we ‘should’ be backing up our data, but in my experience many of us are simply not – you wouldn’t the number of times I visit people and ask whether they have a backup of their data and the reply is no is amazing! The reasons range from not knowing how to backup through to knowing that it’s an important part of storing personal information on a computer but just not bothering to backup.

ber, if you missed it here is a link to the article - www.bluemoonsolutions.es/the-importanceof-backing-up, we looked at DropBox and Microsoft’s SkyDrive in November 2010 www.bluemoonsolutions.es/free-online-storage but now there is a new option available over and above the tried and tested methods of simply dragging and dropping your important stuff onto a memory stick or DVD, its called CrashPlan

It’s simple, the rule is that if you don’t have your data twice (i.e. it’s stored on your computer and also stored elsewhere) then you don’t have your data at all.

Why is it that computer companies love removing the spaces from between words do you think? I have never figured that one out!

There are many ways in which we can get caught out and lose our personal data – the laptop could be stolen, it could have a catastrophic failure of its hard drive or another component that could cause a hardware malfunction, virus infection can also lead to data loss or the user of the computer could simply accidentally delete the data performing an operation on the computer that they are not used to. Ok if the data is lost doing one of the latter functions then it more likely that a computer engineer could get your data back, however if you had a good tried and tested backup solution then there would be no need to call him/her. We have reviewed a number of backup solutions on these pages over the years, we have looked at www.allwaysync.com back in Octo-

Contact Us

Anyway, the idea behind CrashPlan is simple but elegant; they enable you to back up your data to your friends’ computer for free! You and your friend simply download a copy of their software, configure it to back up reciprocally over the Internet and “hey presto” you have a second copy of your important stuff locked away on your friends computer. Your data is encrypted before it leaves your computer so your friend can’t browse through your files and find where you have stashed your millions. The software works on PC’s, Mac’s and Linux alike and even enables you to backup to multiple destinations if you like, improving the protection of your data. Of course the free version has some limitations, so for example it will not enable ‘real time’ backing up of your data – that is to say that immediately after you change a file, it will not back it up (as it does in the full version), it will wait

until your scheduled next back up is due and the file will be processed then. The free version also has adverts in the interface which help pay for the service; however as a free service it’s pretty damn good in my opinion. If you decide to upgrade to the non-advert interface version then it will cost you the not so princely sum of $24.99 a year – pretty cheap considering that they also throw in 10 Gb of cloud storage as well for that price! If you want to know more then have a look on their website – www.crashplan.com Finally a quick announcement – BlueMoon Solutions have expanded! We have a new store on the Moncayo market, open every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday – we have ink cartridges available to buy direct from the store, we have a full time, on site technician available to fix problems or simply to ask questions, we are now able to top-up any mobile phone and we sell (and rent for holiday makers) Internet dongles; so why not pop along and say “hi” you can find more details and a map at www.bluemoonsolutions.es/tech-shop

I hope you have found this useful. Remember that you can see all of our articles on our website at www.bluemoonsolutions.es/articles

A old woman was sipping on a glass of wine, while sitting on the patio with her husband, and she says, “I love you so much, I don’t know how I could ever live without you”. Her husband asks, “Is that you or the wine talking?” She replies, “It’s me talking to the wine”.

However, if they fail, the institution will detain them for five years. Glad to be drunk

A young couple drove several miles down a country road, not saying a word. An earlier discussion had led to an argument, and neither wanted to concede their position.

A completely inebriated man was stumbling down the street with one foot on the curb and one foot in the gutter. A cop pulled up and said, "I've got to take you in, pal. You're obviously drunk." Our wasted friend asked, "Officer, are ya absolutely sure I'm drunk?"

As they passed a barnyard of mules and pigs, the husband sarcastically asked, "Are they relatives of yours?"

"Yeah, buddy, I'm sure," said the copper. "Let's go."

"Yes," his wife replied. "I married into the family."

Breathing a sigh of relief, the wino said, "Thank goodness, I thought I was crippled."

to be joking A man's translations

The "Buffolo Theory" of Beer..

These translations are for all of you wonderful women out there, so that you will know what we really mean when we say...

A herd of buffalo can move only as fast as the slowest buffalo. When the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first.

"IT'S A GUY THING"

This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.

Translated: "There is no rational thought pattern connected with it, and you have no chance at all of making it logical." "CAN I HELP WITH DINNER?" Translated: "Why isn't it already on the table?" "UH HUH," "SURE, HONEY," OR "YES, DEAR" Translated: Absolutely nothing. It's a conditioned response. "IT WOULD TAKE TOO LONG TO EXPLAIN" Translated: "I have no idea how it works." "TAKE A BREAK, HONEY. YOU'RE WORKING TOO HARD." Translated: "I can't hear the game over the vacuum cleaner." "THAT'S INTERESTING, DEAR." Translated: "Are you still talking?" "YOU KNOW HOW BAD MY MEMORY IS." Translated: "I remember the theme song to 'F Troop,' the address of the first girl I ever kissed and the vehicle identification numbers of every car I've ever owned... but I forgot your birthday." "OH, DON'T FUSS, I JUST CUT MYSELF. IT'S NO BIG DEAL." Translated: "I have actually severed a limb but will bleed to death before I admit that I'm hurt." "HEY, I'VE GOT MY REASONS FOR WHAT I'M DOING." Translated: "And I sure hope I think of some pretty soon." "I CAN'T FIND IT." Translated: "It didn't fall into my outstretched hands, so I'm completely clueless." "WHAT DID I DO THIS TIME?" Translated: "What did you catch me at?" "I'M NOT LOST. I KNOW EXACTLY WHERE WE ARE." Translated: "No one will ever see us alive again." "WE SHARE THE HOUSEWORK." Translated: "I make the messes; she cleans them up."

In much the same way the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first.

Social Security A retired gentleman went to the social security office to apply for Social Security. The woman behind the counter asked him for his driver's license to verify his age. He looked in his pockets and realized he had left his wallet at home. He told the woman that he was very sorry but he seemed to have left his wallet at home. "I will have to go home and come back later." The woman says, "Unbutton your shirt." So he opens his shirt revealing curly silver hair. She says, "That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me" and she processed his Social Security application. When he gets home, the man excitedly tells his wife about his experience at the social security office. She says, "You should have dropped your pants. You might have gotten disability too."

You Caught My Eye A man who lived in a block of apartments thought it was raining and put his hand out the window to check. As he did so a glass eye fell into his hand. He looked up to see where it came from in time to see a young woman looking down. "Is this yours?" he asked. She said, "Yes, could you bring it up?" and the man agreed. On arrival she was profuse in her thanks and offered the man a drink. As she was very attractive he agreed. Shortly afterwards she said, "I'm about to have dinner. There's plenty, would you like to join me?" He readily accepted her offer and both enjoyed a lovely meal. As the evening was drawing to a close the lady said, "I've had a marvelous evening. Would you like to stay the night?" The man hesitated then said, "Do you act like this with every man you meet?" "No," she replied, "only those who catch my eye

Exercise While Pregnant The room was full of pregnant women and their partners, and the Lamaze class was in full swing. The instructor was teaching the women how to breathe properly, along with informing the men how to give the necessary assurances at this stage of the plan. The teacher then announced, "Ladies, exercise is good for you. Walking is especially beneficial. And, gentlemen, it wouldn't hurt you to take the time to go walking with your partner!" The room really got quiet. Finally, a man in the middle of the group raised his hand. "Yes?" replied the teacher. "Is it alright if she carries a golf bag while we walk?"

Paranormal Pig WARSAW, Poland -- With a pig in Kiev, an elephant in Krakow and now, believe it or not, a ferret in Kharkiv, sports prognosticating has truly gone wild. Two years after Paul the Octopus became a household name by correctly predicting eight matches at the World Cup in South Africa, several pretenders to the throne have cropped up in Poland and Ukraine, the co-hosts for the European Championship.

Fame and, one can assume, a fortune of mussels followed. But for Euro 2012, there's no shortage of successors with animal instincts.

But they still have a lot to prove.

Citta the elephant, a temperamental 33-year-old female pachyderm from India, lives at a zoo in Krakow. She was chosen over a donkey, a parrot and another elephant after she correctly predicted that Chelsea would win the Champions League title.

"As far as we are concerned, none have the form of Paul the Octopus," said Joe Crilly, a spokesman for British bookmaker William Hill. "And with so many to follow, there are undoubtedly going to be a few who get it wrong."

On Wednesday, the Paul the Octopus-wannabe predicted that co-host Poland would beat Greece in the opening Euro 2012 match by choosing a melon marked Poland. She had a choice of others marked for Greece or for a draw.

Undoubtedly is right. After all, following in the eight footsteps of Paul is no easy feat.

In Kiev, a beer-loving pig named Khryak goes under the spotlight Friday. He'll get a chance to make his first prediction only hours before the tournament begins in Warsaw at the National Stadium.

Paul the Octopus, who died a few months after the 2010 World Cup, lived at the Sea Life aquarium in Oberhausen, Germany. He correctly predicted the outcome of all seven of Germany's matches at the tournament in South Africa, as well as Spain's win over the Netherlands in the final, by plucking a mussel out of a plastic box bearing a national flag.

Fred the ferret is the newest kid on the block, but the professionals will be looking at all the all-seeing animals to see which one does the best. "We will be keeping our eyes and ears open for any hint of a clairvoyant cat or telepathic trout," Crilly said.
