My name is Mauro Antonio Oliveira da Silva. I was born in Cuiabá, in the Mato Grosso region in BRAZIL in 1978 and I started practising CAPOIERA when I was seven years old, encouraged by my brother. In the world of Capoiera I am known as GRADUATE TICO (Graduado Tico) and I am currently a member of the CAPOEIRA NAGÔ group, thanks to my great friend and professor AÚ. During my years of capoeira I have been a member of the different capoeira groups: RASTERA VIVA and the CANDEIAS.
PAINS, TRANNIES & autoMOBILES... Last month there was an article in this magazine covering the ‘difficulties’ encountered when going shopping in Spain. I had an experience of my own last month that would have dovetailed perfectly with those words. You see, I lost my phone. It actually jumped out of my pocket while I was on my scooter so it can’t be my fault obviously and now I needed a replacement. Me, being a bloke, wanted one that would play music, take photos, have amusing ring tones, browse the net…oh, and make calls. After having a look at one or two (about twenty) I decided on one that could do all that, and loads more, only for the sales assistant to get it all ready and packed away, before she told me that I couldn’t have it. Why? Something to do with Pisces being in the wrong equinox I think but whatever the reason I had to go to plan b; use one of the many that I already had… The next problem (for everyone else) was that I changed my mobile number as Vodafone in my locality have a coverage area of about three square feet (just next to the roundabout I think) so it was back to good ol’ Movistar and their famous ‘customer service’, but, sacrifices have to be made and when I sent out a text to everyone in my phone book I got quite a few that let me know what a pain in the rear I was and how they would now have to ‘update my records.’ To all of those that know me and said that…get a life for gauld's sake. All you have to do is press a few lousy buttons and hey presto! the new number is added – not too difficult is it, but to some it’s as if you are thinking of having a sex change and from now on want to be called Marion judging by the reaction. Anyway, if you want the new number it’s at the bottom of the page – just delete the old one and (it’s only nine presses) punch in the new one…. oh, and don’t forget to save it under my name…. Marion will do…
For me this sport - martial arts, dance, combat sport… whatever you want to call it, has played a major part in my life, throughout my whole life: As a CHALLENGE because it makes you want to do better, to exceed oneself over and over again. As HAPPINESS because it consists of music and songs that are born in the hearts of the people dedicated to capoeira, people who want to devote their inner feelings to this art form.
‘Capoeira is life - it’s an explosion of feelings’ -Tico
As FREEDOM because my nation, the black nation of Brazil fought against the unjust slavery to gain it’s freedom. As a TRIBUTE remembering all those ‘capoeiristas’ who are no longer with us. I would firstly like to thank the NORAY GYM in Santa Pola where I currently hold my classes, for their support and confidence in me over the past three years. Secondly, the JUNGLE DRUMS magazine for the unique opportunity to introduce CAPOEIRA to all in this month’s edition. I wish to take this opportunity to invite EVERYONE and ANYONE who wishes to learn more about the MAGICAL ART that is capoeira to join me in one of my classes. If you want to try out this fascinating (and healthy) sport call in at Noray Gym in Santa Pola and ask for details. Taco is very helpful and encouraging to all who wish to ‘give it a go’….go on…you only live once!

Probably in common with a lot of readers, I never needed to take any pills, and, in fact, seldom visited the doctor, until I retired, about six years ago. I think Parkinson’s Law applies here – you’ve time on your hands, so you go and get your personal M.O.T. done – then, lo and behold, the red-printed prescription forms come in batches of ten at a time, for ailments you never suspected you had. When a little while ago I found myself getting a rash of spots, like some acneravaged teenager, I did what I should have done ages ago, and read the prospectus details of my medication. It made horrifying reading, and I shall translate the ‘possible adverse effects’ of one of my pills:1 in 10 gets:Cold hands and feet (so what else is new?) Slower heart-rate ‘Raynaud’s phenomenon’ – which apparently gives your fingers spasms, and you go hot and cold. Bad dreams – and I thought they were caused by the sight of certain politicians. Tiredness. Fatigue (are those two different?) 1 in 100 gets:Diarrhoea Nausea Vomiting 1 in 1000 gets:Breathing difficulties which may result in death! (I love that one) Heart problems that may cause fainting Circulation difficulties Changes of humour (probably means I won’t laugh when I read this) Confusion (I know a few people who must be taking these pills) Mental changes (Hmmm) Dizziness Pins and needles in the hands Vision problems Your hair falls out Spots and suchlike stuff (Am I the one?) Dry eyes (Strange one, that) Easy bruising of the skin Purple stains on the skin (Gorbachev must have been on a heavy dose?) 1 in 10000 gets:Muscular debility Now I reckon that lot covers just about anything that the pharmaceutical company could be sued for. What’s more, when I read up about the other pills I’m on, the lists are remarkably similar. I just wonder if these medicaments actually have any good effects, as well as the adverse ones? Keep on taking the pills.

mini wildlife reserve?
The Jungle Drums rough guide to birds on your doorstep. Our special thanks go to Bryan
Thomas for supplying the wonderful photographs.
In Gran Alacant there is an opportunity to create a 'mini wildlife reserve'.
In the middle of the designated public open space on Avenida Noruega there is a group of ancient olive trees alongside the storm drain that channels excess rain water down from Monte Y Mar towards the nature reserve. At different times of the year, according to their various migration and breeding habits, as many as 50 different types of wild bird can be found in and around these trees. Most have been photographed by Bryan Thomas a semi professional wild life photographer, who spends six months every year here in Gran Alacant. Now that the public open space is being improved by the Town Hall there is the hope that these ancient olives and the wild area around the storm drain could be designated a reserve to protect the wild birds and their annual breeding habits. Little needs to be down to the site, other than protecting it from any development or interference. There is a proposal to construct a very large roundabout opposite the new supermercado now under construction on the north side of Avenida Noruega. Now that the developers, MASA, have stopped further building on that site there is no longer the need for such a large roundabout. If a smaller one is constructed on the north side of the Avenida, as originally shown on the Regional Plan, then none of the olive trees need to be removed and the wild birds and animals will not be disturbed. As a bonus a smaller roundabout will be less expensive in these times of recession, when the Town Hall needs to save every â‚Źuro it can. KEITH HEYWOOD As regular readers will know, our own nature specialist Brian Conduit is under going treatment and is soon to go under the surgeons knife....all of us here at JD wish Brain the very best of luck and speedy recovery as we are looking forward to the meal he has promised us !

the goings on
guide to...
finger on the pulse...
Well I finally have some good news for the readers in Santa Pola, and that’s the new digital TV transmitter has been installed at a cost of 70.000€. By 13 April all analogue signals all over Spain will cease, in Santa Pola you should have 28 channels of TDT (terrestrial digital television) and remember that wherever you are about 6 of these channels work in dual, which means they transmit the original sound so CSI in dual is in English. Now I quite enjoy Spanish television apart from the adverts which are anything up to 15/20mins so be warned. Also I notice here in the Santa Pola news is a new park being built close to Alijibes Del Massapa, now I haven’t a clue where that is but any of you who live local will no doubt know where this is and send a letter to the editor complaining about me but it’s your prerogative. The next thing is I suppose someone will be complaining about the dog poo and kids, not forgetting the graffiti artists and the vandals, come back the local bobby and a clip around the ear that hurts…I know I got enough of them for driving my dad’s car at 15yrs old. So far 22 Red Cross persons are on hand this summer but when I saw someone in the car park in Santa Pola wearing a uniform and I asked if they needed more volunteers the reply was ‘Si’ and as long as they know what they’re doing, i.e. retired medical people - they will be welcomed with arms open. So there you have it from the horse’s mouth, now all you retired people that will not or can’t lay down all day and wait for the inevitable - get too it and go to the station and volunteer. Something else worth mentioning is a local lad who is in the top ten of a competition organised by the Interprofesional del Atun with 167 contestants from all over Europe and at only 17 yrs of age, well done lad and keep it up. Work is to start soon on the access road into Santa Pola, new street lights are to be installed with the roundabout lit up with lights at the base of the palm trees that are to be planted and artificial grass. So let’s hope that no-one decides to have a drinking session and drive over it the first day it’s finished like the one in Gran Alacant where someone decides to park their car on top of the new wall. Another topic on a lot of Santa Pola resident’s minds is the new laws regarding the amount of time that the fishing boats can fish off of the Balearic islands, also the depths that can be fished and the distance from the islands in relation to the depths of water and I am a bit out of my depth (?) here trying to unravel this article so I will stop here and when I get time I will ask a couple of local fisherman on their views. Well another subject I liked at school, apart from the local girls school, is an exhibition in Santa Pola at the castle, and that’s astronomy. Over 5000 visitors enjoyed this exhibition which was put on in conjunction with the local universities. Can we have more things like this please? There is another one for the 19th July and that’s the annual swim from Tabarca which if you’re up to it you can join in by applying online at www.clubnatacionalone.com the fee is 30€ .Lots of boats will be on hand including yours truly no doubt for support and resting buoys marking the route. Right now onto my next pet hate and that’s the idiots that

park on the yellow lines in Gran Alacant outside the Destinations bar and round by the Cam bank. These roads are narrow enough without somebody parking because they can’t be bothered to walk a few yards between that and the train coming the other way. Now I am never in a rush when I drive because I am so laid back now after 23 yrs here that everything is manaña but when I have two impatient drivers behind me blowing their horns. If these people didn’t have such big beer bellies hanging down they might have been able to walk, apart from which supposing an ambulance or a fire engine had come along on an emergency call. Always the same when you want a copper they are all having a siesta or a coffee and brandy but still…live and let live. Tried to have a joy ride on the boat today but the wind got up, and the swells, so I turned around and moored up again, came home and cleaned the pool instead. As I have written in the past if you have aspirations of owning a boat forget it and save your money - buy a Harley and enjoy it a lot more often than a ride on a boat.
Moto
en España
Hi fellow bikers, May saw a variety of meetings from Vikka de Abanilla, los Belones, Cartagena, San Pedro del Pinatar, Santa Pola, Alcoy & Quesa. 1,2,3 May Santa Pola Moto fiesta, three days of music in the Palmera Parque, with rides out to local villages and the Elche safari park. 40€ for all 3 days, 35€ for Sat & sun or 5€ for tourist rate. Friday evening was music and drinks, Saturday was two rides with music and drinks (HIC) and Sunday was another ride wiv more drinks (HIC HIC thanks ED you give me all the best jobs). Below is a few of the guys that rode on Saturday and the start of a wheelie right in front of the local Policia who escorted us around Santa Pola and did an great job, I recommend this to all next year as it was a small meeting but loads of fun and new friends. 29,30,31 May saw the San Pedro del Pinatar HOG fiesta with the Murcia Hells Angels chapter putting on music and rides free for all three days, you meet on at the port where there are stalls of all descriptions, Bars and a gigantic paella, most of San Pedro del Pinatar port area was closed to cars and the bikers made the most of it. This year saw Mick Taylor (ex-Rolling Stones)
on stage with supporting bands “The Rodders” and “Moe’s Bar Band”. June is looking good 5,6,7 Lepe, meeting at Playa de la Antilla 6,7, Cordoba meeting at Recinto ferial 11.00 h 6,7 Granada meeting at Parque del Meditarraneo 14 Santa Pola fiesta at the port I do hope that ED keeps the photo’s this month as I am one of the three bikers at San Pedro del Pinatar, if anyone gets to Santa Pola on the 14th June please look for me, I will be the one walking round with a camera bag and a badge, if ED lets me then I will try to include some of your photo’s, keep the sangria flowing, the entrance fee includes all food and drinks plus music. Time to chop off again, see you soon, Viking

LORETO CASCALES Councillor for Gran Alacant & the Popular Party
As usual it is a pleasure for me to meet you once again to give you information about Gran Alacant. It is very important that everybody in our community knows the services we have at our disposal and why things are done in the way the are done. This is something that somebody told me at my office some weeks ago and I think it is something important. This is the reason why I have decided to explain the following points: 1. There is a social services department that helps in finding solutions to some of the social problems that some people may have. If there are people who cannot prepare their own meals or they need somebody cleaning their property because they are ill or some special service like this, they will be seen by a social worker who will evaluate each case and will decide if it is necessary for
The Rumour Mill Talk of a block of flats being built on the site that is currently occupied by the swimming pool next to the bowls… Is it true? We asked Antonio the owner of the complex after receiving a few calls from locals and here’s what he told us. Yes, there are plans to put some ‘social residencies’ on the plot and do away with the pool. The plan is for possibly 12 homes for senior citizens to be constructed with a heated pool as part of the complex and
this type of help from the Town Hall. This social worker is at the Municipal Office every Tuesday and Friday during the afternoon and the only thing you have to do to see her is to ask for an appointment with her at the municipal office or speak with me directly. 2. I would like also to say something about the new petanca area and playground area we are constructing opposite the new supermarket that is being built. This green area the Town Hall owns has been impoverished for very long time. Now, we have the opportunity to create a public spare area plenty of vegetation and trees that may help to make nicer and more confortable this green area we have in Avenida Noruega. We are going to plant trees, put benches, lights and a watering system for the plants. So, apart from the petanca area and the playground for children that we do not have in any other place closer to the school, we are going to be able to improve a public green area with more trees and vegetation. So, at the end of the day, it is going to be like a small public park in Avenida Noruega. Anyway, if there is somebody who may have any doubt or suggestion about it, please make an appointment with me and I will be grateful to explain to you directly what is going on there and how nice it is going to be! 3. Just a brief reference to the Club of language. It was just a great success. We have made more than 20 pairs who are practising now English or Spanish. So, thank you very much to all the people foir participating.
on-site medical care for those who require it. When? He’s not sure yet but we don’t think too much will happen this end of the summer. If you need something investigating or finding out – contact us here at JD and we’ll do our very best to find out for you – we have the town hall’s ear….and we aint giving it back…
4. As I told you in previous articles, the pavements of Avenida Noruega and Avenida Mediterráneo have been started already and you can see now how wide and comfortable they are going to be. 5. Congratulations to GASP! and the effort they made to be an official group and the rest of the associations we have in Gran Alacant who make possible so many new things in the area. You know I am here to help you in anything I can. 6. Remember! We will have a very important appointment the next 4th July. The new Association of Business in Gran Alacant are preparing a big fair for all the residents and visitors at the Life Resort Complex and we hope you come, enjoy and know much better all the services you have in Gran Alacant. Things are moving in Gran Alacant and it is very important for me to be a little part of this. Thank to all of you who are helping me to make of Gran Alacant a better place to live: Maureen, Linda, Roger, John…Thank you very much!
If you have any questions that you would like to ask Loreto - pop along to the municipal centre in GA and make an appointment to see her. You’ll find her extremely helpful, and don’t worry - she apeaks English!

LaMarina ADULT EDUCATION CLASSES By John McGregor Over the years since leaving school (when Pontius was a pilot), I have attended quite a few such courses, on varying subjects from guitar lessons to bricklaying, some Open University subjects and, of course learning Spanish. With almost no exceptions, they all start off the same - over-subscribed, lucky to get your name down, waiting lists operating…you get the picture. But it never ends up like that – why is that? I believe the answer lies in life’s never-ending quest for personal improvement, if not the ability to ’see it through’. If you’ve attended an adult education class, you know the drill. At the first class or lesson, everyone is there, scrubbed faces shining, eager for knowledge, and hanging on to the teacher/instructor’s every word. All the ladies have mentally gone back to school with their pencils sharpened in their blingy little cases, and brightly coloured empty new files (sorry, girls but you do!). The men trying to look macho and serious, but nervously joking in case they are shown up or to be found lacking in something basic that they really should know (don’t we lads?). The following week two people are missing and you try to remember them – was he the smartass who couldn’t… / or she the nervy, panic-stricken looking one? In a few weeks you are down to half strength, and the teacher is looking concerned, as it ultimately reflects on them and their abilities. With the instructors you have a bewildering array of talents and characters… one of the first Spanish teachers I had in the UK was a tiny Columbian woman, very nice but terrified of the night-school administrator - a woman who had a nasty habit of dropping in unexpectedly to see how the lesson was going. It got so bad that if we saw her marching down the corridor towards us, over the teacher’s shoulder, we had to shout ‘Caramba!’, at which she would panic and, hands shaking, suddenly pretend to be putting the video into the recorder to play us the BBC ‘Learn Spanish’ tape. Mind you, the administrator was a
bit scary; you could see the jackboot rash marks on her leg… Learning the guitar was a good laugh, the instructor Ray was a gem. All day he had been teaching small children, and in our evening

classes, when we tried to play some difficult piece he was attempting to teach us, he would pause and sigh and say ‘You mustn’t criticize children these days in case the little…..darlings get upset and tell their parents….. That was bloody awful, by the way!’ I still pick and strum

away some evenings (they can’t touch you for it), and chuckle at some of his wittier comments. And his stories of busking round Europe when he was an entertainer in his younger days. How do you learn bricklaying? Yes that’s right you build little walls and then knock ‘em down at the end of the lesson! Great fun and the language of the instructor, plus his building site stories were very educational. No, btw, I never got the urge to build my own house as a result,

funny that! Tried Open University? I did a couple of years ago, and I’m thoroughly hooked, wish I’d done it years ago! You can ‘study’ just about anything from soap operas – no, before you ask, I’m not... I’d rather stick pins in my eyes - to doing the arts. Me? I’m studying Napoleon at the moment,

if you really want to know. I’m halfway to a degree (yes me, who’d a thought it ?), although that’s not why I’m doing it, I just wanted to right an old wrong, to fulfil an old ambition, sort of, before I get too rusty. Anyway, I digress, you can do OU online, like I do, mind you meet some right smart-asses and wazzocks in the forums online, I don’t think some of them have been ever let outdoors, let alone held down a job…

Peaceful agricultural villages with a traditional Spanish feel, both Hondons have a typically welcoming community. Hondรณn de las Nieves and Hondรณn de los Frailes are also renowned for their fine table wines. Grapes and almonds are mainly grown here and also many other root crops and fruits while the other dominant industry is construction with several limestone quarries servicing the Costa Blanca building trade for cement products. Hondรณn is located in an area producing the bagged grapes, which have provided the main source of prosperity for this traditional farming community in the centre of the Vinalopรณ Valley. In addition to the bagged grapes, Hondรณn also produces wines that can be purchased from the local wine shop. Nowadays this area is still mainly agricultural with 74 percent of land dedicated to farming, growing mainly: grapes, oranges and almonds.

Welcome to this month’s computer article written by Richard from BlueMoon Solutions “Why is my computer going so slowly?” This is the question that I get asked more often than anything else (with the possible exception of “Why do I keep receiving emails about Viagra – how do they know?” ) What makes computers “go” fast depends on a number of factors the processor, the available space on your hard drive and to a lesser extent its fragmentation percentage as well as the amount of RAM (random access memory) that you have available for your system to use. This month we will look at each of these and try to figure out why your computer is not running as quickly as you would like it to. 1. Processor – this is often likened to the “brain” of your computer, it is the component inside your PC or laptop that actually does the work. It receives data from the hard disk, via the RAM, manipulating it and passing it to the video card to display on your monitor. In terms of speed it’s simple, the ‘better’ (or more expensive) your processor, the faster it will be and therefore the faster your computer will work. Upgrading your processor can be an expensive affair, mainly because the processor is dependent on a number of other components in your computer (the motherboard for one) and because of this and the relative expense of upgrading it, it’s not usually good practice or good advice to look to this as a way of improving the performance of your computer. 2. Hard Disk – this component is responsible for storing all of your data. It is where Windows lives and where your documents, photographs and music reside. Its ability to impact the speed of your computer is twofold firstly if it’s fragmented (the files on the disk drive are scattered all over the place) then it will take your computer longer to locate a requested file and this impacts on its speed. Secondly, if there is very little available space left of your hard drive then this
will also have an impact on the speed of your computer – try to make sure that you have at least 15% of your hard drive free at all times. 3. RAM – this is the component in your PC or laptop that has the most cost effective and dramatic effect on speed. Generally speaking, simply adding more RAM to your computer will make it go faster. Over time the installation of additional services and programs to computers eats away at the available RAM until it reaches such a point that there is insufficient RAM inside your computer for it to work effectively; your computer then starts to use your hard disk as temporary RAM (hence the previous point about having sufficient free at all times). This temporary use of hard drive space is called “virtual memory” and if you are having problems with your computer going slow then you have also probably seen an error on your computer saying “virtual memory is low”, these are all indications that you need to put more RAM into your computer. Thankfully adding additional RAM into your computer is an easy thing to do and doesn’t cost the earth. If you would like BlueMoon Solutions to put a quote together for you then just email us with your computer’s make and model.

Half of the month of may was taken up with the Valencia Championships the consequence of which was that both the Hurricans and Spitfires Leagues were condensed into the first, couple of weeks but this arrangement seemed to suit one of our teams namely the Navigators who got off to a flyer by winning 3 of their 4 games and one of those was away at la Siesta always a difficult green to get the decision on but the Navigators did it in style by 11 points to 3. the Spitfires started off the season a bit shaky but got themselves nicely on course over the last 2 matches by winning them both and by a couple of good margins 11 points to 3 , so it wasnt a bad start to the summer season by La Marina. Chris Green our new competition secretary has hit the ground running by already organising a couple of fun saturday theme games very well supported I must say, and the summer pairs league that he is running has already started, plus the monday evening floodlight trips is due to start early in June so he is keeping us well supplied with competitions to enter. Last month I wrote that we were in the throes of battle with Monte Mar playing for the Super Series Cup that is played out annually between our two clubs so I am pleased to say that the Cup still sits in our trophy cabinet, as we retained it with a resounding win in the trips and the fours, but may I say what a good competition this has once again proved to be as it is played out in a great atmosphere and also brings our two clubs who have always been close even closer long may it be so. Our Kings Cup team have also picked up the pace with 2 wins from their last 3 games, the one game they did loose was at la Siesta with the rinks going against them by 1 shot, and the singles by 3 so it looks like they are begining to get their act together. As I said at the begining the valencia Championships took place this month unfourtunatly none of our entrants made it to the finishing line the nearest being Fred Roberts and Roy Hart making it to the semi finals in the mens pair, but congratulation must go to all of our players who took part and flew the La Marina flag. The month of june looks very good social wise as Gina our social secretary has organised some good events i.e. those being the Quiz. Treasure Hunt., and a B.B.Q. rouind the pool. so check out the notices and support these events you never know you might even enjoy yourself, so untill next month good bowling and keep healthy. Intrepid ex-pat Terry Errington from Gran Alacant, who celebrated his 70th birthday recently, is determined to raise money for the Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, by riding his bicycle from one end of Britain to the other, leaving John O’Groats and cycling the length of Scotland and England, and maybe part of Wales if he gets lost, before hopefully arriving at Land’s End! He will be meeting up with a very good friend of his, Lionel, and on the 29th May they will be on their way to John O’Groats in a van driven by Terry’s son Mark, and making final preparations before they start heading south. The reason why Terry chose Great Ormond Street Hospital to benefit from this epic ride, is that his daughter’s best friend in England has a young son who is two this year, and who has already had seventeen operations for one thing and another. About the time he returned from the UK to Spain in May last year, the baby was about to be fitted with an eye from another young baby, but this operation failed. However, he was fitted with a false eye with more serious operations to come. The staff at Great Ormond Street have been magnificent, not only in their expertise, but also with their compassion for such a young child and his distraught parents, and it is support of these wonderful people that Terry is putting himself ‘through the mill’. Obviously, any donations of any amount will be gratefully received, and unlike many larger charitable appeals, every centime raised will benefit this marvellous institution, with all expenses being paid by those taking part. To spice things up even further, Terry is also running a Guess the Mileage Covered competition, with a donated prize for the winner but it’s no good looking at the A.A. Map as the mileage will include getting lost, visit’s to the local pubs (not too many though), and going the wrong way round the roundabouts, so please have a go. Pledges can be made either in person at Monte Mar Bowls Club, by e/mail at info@ montemarbowls.com or terrysandra@hotmail. co.uk, or by contacting Terry Errington on 966697762. Terry would like to thank the Monte Mar Bowls and Social Club, it’s members various other bowls club Members, and the public at large, who have already donated to this worthy cause, but please keep giving, they need the money. Photographs show Terry Errington and his lady Sandra Errington, and Terry swapping bowls for bike as he says his goodbyes to club members.

Valencian Championships In his first championships, Bill Clifton achieved a very commendable result in his first singles match in only losing by three shots to John Muldoon. Brian Harman won his first round singles game, unfortunately losing in the second round against a strong opponent playing at his own club. Colin Armitage won his first and second round singles games, but in the third round he lost by three shots, again to a home based player. In the Ladies Singles, Pat Harman and Lynne Armitage both played very well, with Pat winning her first round game. The most successful results were achieved by Lynne and Pat in the Ladies Pairs, who won their first and second round games, thus progressing to the quarter finals when they lost to the final wood in the last end.
Social Club Outings ....Earlier this month more than one hundred club members journeyed by coach to Caravaca de la Cruz, for the annual running of the wine horses race. The weather was kind, the atmosphere electric, hospitality excellent, and food and drink prices less than on the Costa, surprise, surprise! The only problem encountered was when Membership Sec, George Wilkinson lost wife Mo for a couple of hours in the huge crowds. All men will of course realise whose fault this turned out to be when Mo finally appeared, and George was last seen with a right ear resembling an ear trumpet!! Seriously though, a big thank you to Sue Bounds, Mo Wilkinson and Ken Moore for their work in organising and administering the day, which was enjoyed by all.
Social Club Dinner Dances Dinner Dances are held monthly (except July/August) at the Rincon Restaurant next to our bowling green. Tickets are available from Mo Wilkinson on 966697063, Sue Bounds on 966699130 or Social Secretary Ken Moore on 966695438. Alternatively, you can contact by E-mail at info@montemarbowls.com
Social Club Weekly Events We have a quiz night at the club on Monday evenings, Bums and Tums or Aquaerobics on Tuesday mornings, an ‘eyesdown’ Bingo session on Wednesday evenings, and Pilates on Thursday mornings.

Club Roll-up Sessions Once you have been to the coaching sessions, you will want to improve your bowling and make new friends into the bargain! To help you, we have three club roll-up sessions on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 10.00am for a 10.30am start.
Club Website If you haven’t visited our website yet, over ten thousand others have, and now it’s even better. Our new Club Secretary Les Bounds has developed, and has been looking after (or should I say administering) our website for a couple of years now, and has recently totally re-vamped it. The result is a totally professional and easy to use site, which contains all of the information about our popular, friendly club. You can find our website at www.montemarbowls.com we will be pleased to host you.

If you are so unfortunate as to be receiving a UK pension, then welcome to the club! I don’t have to remind you how much you’ve been done out of in the last year. But why? I shall try my best to avoid politics, but it’s not easy here. You see, it’s all a matter of SOVEREIGNTY. That is the oft-quoted reason for the United Kingdom not having joined the Euro, now one of the world’s strongest currencies. As if Spain has surrendered her sovereignty – and all the other diverse nations that make up the EC. Just what are the blow-hards in Britain scared of? Are they worried they will lose the Royals? Hmmm – the National Debt would be improved if they did, but certainly there would be less scandalous entertainment. Or would they really miss the pound? Back in my distant youth, when no foreigner could understand the money, and we had pound and ten-bob notes, big heavy half-crowns and florins, sneaky little bobs and tanners, cranky threepenny bits, and massive pennies, not to mention the rare possibilty of finding a silver threepenny piece, or a little farthing with a Wren on the back, the coinage was interesting – worth preserving, perhaps. But we didn’t keep it, and you could no longer quote threehalfpence a foot to confuse anyone born elsewhere. So now we have to give large chunks of cash over to the banks every time we come and go from Britain, and sending a cheque to anyone – or receiving one – is such a complicated business that you do better to wait until you are there. Tony Blair, bless his cotton socks, tried to convince people that the UK should join, but then gave in to the referendum lobby – and even that hasn’t happened. The worry of all my fellow pensioners is now that Britain will be forced to join when the pound is at a low ebb. Ah well, no use worrying about it, is it?

Spain has 75 universities (56 state-run and 19 private). The number of female students has increased by around 40 per cent in the last decade, they now out number male students. Competition for places at Spanish universities is high, as there are generally too few places for all the students wishing to attend. In addition, the top Spanish International schools also offer the International Baccalaureate program, as well as the local secondary school qualifications, called the Bachillerato. This is a great advantage for those looking to enroll their children in a school which will allow them to attend university in other parts of the world, as students attending International schools can often receive both local and international titles upon graduation. EU nationals are entitled to compete for places at Spanish universities on equal terms with Spanish nationals. The Spanish university system is rigidly structured: students must follow a fixed curriculum and are not permitted to change universities during their studies (except for family or health reasons). To enter university, they must sit an entrance examination (selectividad). A free student health insurance plan, covering accidents on campus, family emergencies and illness, is available to all international students under 28 years of age who are enrolled in a Spanish university. The three universities on the Costa Blanca are University of Elche, University of Alicante and Valencia University. University studies in Spain are divided into three different stages, Grade degrees (undergraduate studies), University Master degrees (graduate studies) and Doctoral degrees (postgraduate studies). The first cycle lasts two or three years, the second cycle, two or three further years and the third cycle requires one further year, a master's dissertation, and results in the doctoral degree, which normally takes 5 to 8 years of full-time research. Four–five year programs are offered in the faculties (Facultades) of law, sciences and humanities. Programs in medicine, pharmacy, veterinary science, professional degrees in engineering and architecture last five - six years. University Costs In most regions, university fees (tasas) are set by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science. In autonomous regions, with responsibility for their own education, fees are set annually by the university council and the local regional government. Spanish university fees are low for residents and EU nationals, depending on the faculty and location. University grants in Spain are very difficult to acquire. Grants and scholarships are available to Spanish and foreign students and around one in seven students receives a grant. (a disadvantage of moving to Spain is that foreign children, resident in Spain, may be classified as overseas students by their home countries, making them no longer eligible for grants and possibly liable to pay higher fees) For many potential students, even if gifted academically, it is a matter of whether or not the family can afford to send them to university. After a poor start to the year, you are about to enjoy a period of superbly executed plans. The belly dancers you have booked for a bachelor party will prove highly popular with the intended audience, although not with a group of girl guides who wanted to use the changing rooms at the time. Help bridge the gap by promising to buy 10 boxes of cookies from the fat spotty grumpy looking one.
A well loved aunt who has an international police record as an anti-globalization protester, is set to make a welcome call this month. Avoid taking her to any McDonald’s or Starbuck’s from which she has a globe-wide ban. If the old coot absent mindedly follows you in, she will be noisily arrested with surprising speed. Try to avoid getting into any security camera shots with her, preferring to wear large hats throughout the month. Practice an untraceable foreign accent for emergencies. Sailing and diving are, once again, under the direct influence of Jupiter for most of the month (the planet is a keen water sports fan). However, from the 9th a negative conjunction with Saturn suggests problems with your knees.
The dispute between Mercury and Mars continues, dooming you to ever more exotic cookery. (Note: the Zimbabwean bean cake you attempted was not cooked for its optimal time and was, as your thought at the time, far too crunchy. A local behooded hoodlum will be impressed by your driving skills on 15th whilst you are speed-parking your car at the supermarket. He may attempt to make eye-contact. Take this opportunity to make a difference to this young punk’s life, although don’t let him valet park your car until the Yak yawns at the moon after the 21st.A spider’s nest you find in your basement after 18th will be of interest to a documentary maker with the letter P in his name.

Your attempts to take up extreme sports will receive another boost this month when, whilst walking out to your car, you will (unbelievably) catch in your arms a large television set thrown out of an upstairs window. The adrenaline rush you get from the success of this catch will feature heavily in your after-dinner talk circuit, and possibly on Letterman, later in your catching career.Yes, this month you will stumble over the next big thing catching stuff. Prepare a detailed business plan and present this to your local bank - they will give you a very preferential loan - luckily for you, your bank manager is a skydiver under the influence of Venus.

Smile, smile smile and smile again ‘cos that’s what you’ve been doing recently and it suits you. The summer is here and it’s time to start enjoying it with KIIN and the little fella. The big little one may also join you to make the full set. Your rakastan is nearby and with a sky full of stars you can think of the future as that will make them shine only brighter on you. Remember that above all 11 in the alphabet is the key to contentment and satisfaction and if you take good care will be around for ever.
Miksi, Miksi, Miksi are the words for this month, whether it makes any sense or not the question is always why? and why not? Some earlyier nights and listening to those around you who (they think) know better is a good choice and doing just as the Princess tells you means that the long term future is going to be extremely good - but only if you listen. Harry is running around a lot at the moment meaning he is happy being around you. That is the current theme...those who are nearby are enjoying your company very much - think of yourself as very special because you are.

May 22nd - June 21st The Sun is expected to add spice into your life around the 4th when an unlikely career development presents itself in the form of what looks like a small furry animal. Accept this development with glee, although do not part with any of your savings until you have in your possession at least three of the pictures of your boss in the promised, incriminating, position of ‘triple licky lust’. Ironically, your tongue is set for a poor month. Avoid licking stamps after 15th and ice cream should be eaten with a spoon, not erotically, after the 10th. In China they are about to name a new disease after you, following an extensive search on the internet for a new name.

September 23rd - October 23rd Pluto is beginning its once every 1000 year romp with Mercury standing by, watching, from the sidelines. This could have a devastating impact on any attempt to balance on stilts, and, indeed, any circus performance which is ill starred for the next 15 years. Never fear for your own life, however, it is only those in the front three rows in the audience who are in mortal danger.

June 22nd - July 22nd Bonsai is well starred for the first half of the month, but you will be unable to buy the small, dinky, cutting tools required. You will attempt to use standard sized scissors and be happy with the initial results, however a strange feng shui type thing is going on in the background which will lead to a higher than average breakage of drinking vessels and vases for the next 6 weeks. A robust defense to any allegations of illiteracy from a teenager is necessary this week, especially if she is wearing a red cap.Your nipples will benefit from the application of a soft toffee balm between 5th-19th as Uranus starts to inflate
‘Your chart, if joined by the ages old method of dotto-dot, once again forms a pointy eared animal. This could be a sign that you are about to start experimenting with horse breeding, or it could mean something else entirely. If you decide on the horse breeding route: We would advise buying books, videos and inflatable animals on the subject before you actually try it in the field. You are to be reassured that you are not mistaken in your belief that some of the animals in the field are eyeing you up in a becoming way.Bottled water is the best chance of your survival this week when the local Al Qaeda affiliate chapter randomly select your street as target practice on the exact day an anti-terrorism practice is to take place down it. Of course someone has tipped them off.
You will be drawn to a Hollywood Great from the 1920’s this month, even though, at the moment, you have never heard of her. Rene Garawayde was the originator of the shocked handover-the-eyes look used extensively in the silent era to signify ‘walking into wind’. This unexpected infatuation will have you question your sexuality on more than one occasion, however the questions will not lead to any interesting answers, although it may reawaken a love of wearing bushy dresses with a gym slip underneath.A syringe will become stuck in your arm this month in a bizarre accident involving an action doll figure.

February 19th - March 20th It could be roast beef for you on the night of the 23rd but if tghe jump is big enough and he makes it the night and forever after will be yours to enjoy. Legs and blue shoes are some things that figure in your life and you have the ability to make someone else’s legs weak. Friends will be around you this month and fun is there to be had by you all - memories are precious so keep them alive as the wine flows. Four walls and a roof are what is really in your destiny but patience is a virtue, time rushes for no man but someone wants it to hurry up! WHAT’S ON ?
DOG SHOW PADS dogs’ charity is pleased to announce our forthcoming Dog Show. Judging will be based on 9 different categories and the 10th category will be an overall winner picked from the best in the show. We are seeking sponsorship for the 10 different categories. If you would be interested in sponsoring a category with your product, business or service then €25.00 will get you mentioned in all our pre-show advertising and, on the day itself. So get in touch and choose your category. It is for a good cause.
GUIDE
The Dog Show is to be held at our kennels in Benferri on Saturday 13th June, from 1.00pm to 5.00pm. The kennels are near Orihuela, junction 81 off Alicante Murcia motorway. We aim for a fun-filled day, with lots to see and do, therefore everybody is very, very welcome, with or without their four-legged friends! Make a note in your diaries and we look forward to seeing you there.
