Martin Cocimano Native Spanish Language Teacher Eight years experience Groups & individual lessons
It was a choice between doing an article on speaking Spanish or doing a recipe for an omelette or something… so if you don’t learn anything here… we’ll get the pans out. There’s obviously lots of ways to learn Spanish but none of them seem easy (enough) do they? The books look daunting and when, after you’ve rehearsed all afternoon - before placing your order in perfect Spanish at the restaurant in the evening, the waiter replies in English…well, it’s a bit demoralising isn’t it. So we asked several native Spanish teachers what was their best tips for getting us speaking the lingo, without going to classes and doing the dreaded studying that puts so many off. Martin, a teacher in Santa Pola for nine years, and a nice neighbour it should be noted said, that learning a language is all about organising what you are going to learn into your daily routine, and keeping it very simple. Firstly you just need to learn separate words that you think you may be using, based on what your life in Spain is and the specific context that you want to learn the language for. Ask yourself, why do I want to learn the language? What would it be useful to know how to say in Spanish? Then set up a daily list of words in English with its equivalent in Spanish... I repeat, learn ONLY stuff that you think it’s going to be useful for you! Do not learn words that you will never use. Be smart, and don’t waste your time!
Secondly, they have to be words that you like and feel familiar with in some way. Learning and studying something new is also about enjoying it, otherwise nothing will stay in. Try not to only learn the words, but play with them, make funny sentences and try saying them out loud with your friends and then watch people reactions. Remember, you have to have fun while doing this. Thirdly, have in mind your goals in relation to being able to speak Spanish. Do not lose focus of what you want to achieve. Write down a list of all possible situations where you would like to be using your Spanish and look at them daily. See yourself talking in Spanish, with Spanish neighbours, with people in the street, it doesn’t matter how much Spanish you know in the present time. The attitude that you put into this and the determination of where you want to go and what you want to achieve it’s half of the way. Fourthly, find the balance between reading and practicing your lists of Spanish words every day but always without pushing yourself too hard. You need to keep yourself motivated for doing this. Anything that doesn’t motivate you, just don’t do it! Find what of learning the language motivates you and go all that way.
Lessons in person & on the Internet
And remember, learning Spanish is not only learning a language. It’s learning a new culture and getting to know more about other people and their way of life and values. It’s using your mind in creative ways keeping your brain active. It’s making your life in Spain much more fulfilling and enjoyable.

QUALIFIED GESTORA
Since there are many British homeowners selling up, here are a few pieces of helpful information.
SPANISH PROBATE/INHERITANCES
First of all, an estate agency is obviously your first port of call. They can give you a price orientation of how much you can expect to get for your property but that is a guideline only.
CONVEYANCING
The agency will put the property up for sale at the price that you indicate, if your aspirations are too optimistic it will delay the sale. The agent’s commission will be added to your price and the property will be advertised for that total. Therefore, when checking out prices of similar properties at different agencies for your own orientation, bear in mind that these prices already include the agent’s commission.
SPANISH WILLS
POWER OF ATTORNEY
Fiscal help...
The said commission seems high in comparison to the UK but the estate agents do not only find you a buyer they will also take care of the legal side. They will check out debt situations on properties and take care of everything for signing the deed at the notary. If you sign an “exclusive” agreement with an agency, that is the sole agency, bear in mind that you will still have to pay the agreed commission to that agency even if you sell it privately or through someone else. Any normal agreement signed means that the agent’s fee can only be charged by the estate agency that has successfully sold your property. When selling as a non-resident, 3% of the total sales price will be held by the buyers and paid to the tax office on your account. If you have made hardly any or no profit on the sale, you will be entitled to a tax refund. You will have to file for the said refund within 4 months from the date of sale. Make sure you contact your solicitor or gestor to supply all the necessary documents that have to be attached to the tax declaration. At this stage you will also have to show proof of payment of the annual non-residents’ income tax. Don’t forget, this includes the payment for the tax year 2009 which is being paid this year!

SHORT BREAK?...A few ideas So you’ve a few days to spare from your busy schedule of sitting around on the balcony and nipping down the bar, and you want to see a little of the natural history of Spain? I’ve put together a few itineraries which you can feel free to muck about with. As it happens, I’m just back from one, so we’ll start there. Barry and I have just spent two nights in the Ebro Delta – great area, but brush up your catalan. We called at the impossibly vast Albufera de Valencia on the way – the little wader-scrape of la Ratlla (pronounced ‘ratya’) is rewarding – if you find it! Follow the right hand side of the railway north from Sollana, and you eventually see the screen on your right – great spot for waders of many species. Then onwards past the capital to the Platja de Puçol (getting the hang of this Valenciano stuff!) and walk north along the shore to the Marjal del Moro. Red-knobbed Coot – if you’re lucky – and Purple Swamp-hen, etc. Then it’s a wooshtie up the motorway (much of which you can avoid, with care, and travel free) to Sant Carles de Ràpita and the Delta. Once there, just wander around. The Delta Hotel at Delt’ebre is very much THE place to stay, and won’t break the bank. Rice fields are the name of the game – full of egrets, including Great Whites, Glossy Ibis, gulls and terns. Ducks aand Night Herons etc abound on the huge Bassa d’Encanyissada, and there are plenty of hides to be found – the hotel will give you a map and provide information. Fancy a trip inland instead? The Sierras de Cazorla and Segura will give you some entertainment, and I’ll give you a great tip for somewhere to stay – a couple of nights at the Cortija Rosa Blanca (White Rose – they’re Yorkshire folk, you see) will not be wasted. E-mail Wendy at wendyandmel@excite.com or phone 953437314. Their place is near Santiago de la Espada, in an idyllic spot – vultures overhead, lots of other raptors, a good chance of Azure-winged Magpies close by, deer, Red Squirrels and wild boar all plentiful – and all about four hours’ drive away. Don’t want to leave the coast? OK, so try heading south instead. The area around Aguilas has Moorish Tortoise – and a few birds include a pair of Bonelli’s Eagle. Carry on down, and you can, with luck, find Trumpeter Finch near the tawdry ‘Mini-Hollywood’ set-up at Tabernas. There’s good sea-watching near San José, a great place for waders and gulls etc at the Cabo de Gata salinas, while the semi-desert just inland holds Dupont’s Lark – if you can find them – as well as Little Bustard, Black-bellied Sandgrouse and Stone Curlew. In an area so close to the African coast, just about anything can occur, and there are fairly frequent reports of rare birds. The botanists inform me that the zone is fascinating for its plant-life. These are far from being the only trips you can make – the lagoons and huge plains of Castilla – la Mancha, the Serengetilike reserve of Cabañeros, the rugged mountains of the Maestrazgo, the heights of the Sierra Nevada – all are there for you to visit, and can be done with a two-night stopover, but would repay longer visits too. We live in a lovely, often underpopulated, country. Enjoy!

So, there I was, sitting in a bar with our editor - a rare, chance meeting you understand, I wouldn’t want you to get the impression that either of us spend much time in the bars of Gran Alacant! We were talking about the benefits of using online storage as an alternative to using CDs or memory sticks and Dave was extolling the benefits of DropBox and how, by using it, he can keep three copies (his phone, his laptop and his PC) of his important data synchronised whenever any of the three computers connect to the Internet. Without a doubt, if you have imporimpor tant information that you either want to protect and back up or you need to access easily from any Internet concon nected computer DropBox - this or one of the many alternatives to it, is the way to go. The main advantage of DropBox over its rivals is its ease of use. It really is very simple to use (well, even our editor can do it, so it has to be pretty straight forward!), however it does have a limitation. Its storage limit on the free version allows you to only store up to 2Gb.

Welcome to this month’s computer article written by Richard from BlueMoon Solutions
It is true that 2Gb is a lot of storage if you are looking to protect documents and spreadsheets and even the odd important photo, however when you start to think about all of your digital data then 2Gb starts to look pretty restrictive. So, what’s the answer? Well you could go back to using your trusty memory stick, of course this is fine, but then you run the risk of losing all of your data if you lose you memory stick.
web based, useful applications - you can see the original article at www. bluemoonsolutions.es/free-web-stuffpart-1 SkyDrive, is still around and it’s still offering a whopping great 25Gb of storage space totally free of charge. It’s a service offered by Microsoft (which makes it good in my opinion) and its been enhanced quite a bit since we first reviewed it. Now it gives you the ability to share individual folders with your friends and family – imagine uploading your latest snaps to a folder and instantly giving your family and friends access to them – no tedious attaching things to emails and finding that you can only send 2 photos at a time because of email size limits. If you are lucky enough to have Microsoft Office 2010 (the latest version), you can even save your files directly to SkyDrive straight from Word or Excel. If you have a house here and one back in the UK, why not use SkyDrive to store your data and you can then easily access it in both locations? You can sign up for your own copy of SkyDrive at http://explore.live.com/ windows-live-skydrive Now there is no excuse for you not to back up your data!
There is an online alternative. It’s something that we mentioned originally in this column back in February 2009 when we were reviewing free

Sack A poor farmer went to the market to sell some peas and lentils. However, as he had only one sack and didn’t want to mix peas and lentils, he poured in the peas first, tied the sack in the middle, and then filled the top portion of the sack with the lentils. At the market a rich innkeeper happened by with his own sack. He wanted to buy the peas, but he did not want the lentils. Pouring the seed anywhere else but the sacks is considered soiling. Trading sacks is not allowed. The farmer can’t cut a hole in his sack. How would you transfer the peas to the innkeeper’s sack, which he wants to keep, without soiling the produce?

POSTAL & COURIER
Regular readers will have noticed the Easypost logo now appearing in the magazine and on various other adverts too. Who are they? What do they do? Easypost who trade as MJM Courier Services used to be a franchise of a courier company, but now they’ve gone and cut the apron strings and are now trading independently as Easypost.es. What this means for you the reader is that they now have full control over their services. Meaning we get a better service, good eh? They also nudged me in the ribs (a bit too hard I might add) to let you know that now they are independent they are able to provide a better and faster range of services than before. Fearing another nudge (or worse) I’d better assure current customers that all their outbound mail and courier services will continue, but now they will be flying items every day of the working week. In other words, your post will get there quicker (even I could work that one out…). A next day courier delivery service within Europe and 48 hours delivery service to the Rest of the World isn’t bad is it? Add to that their inbound mail and courier service which now has a faster delivery time to you living here in Spain, and the very popular British passport renewal service. They’ve also asked me to pass on their thanks to existing clients for their loyalty and say that they look forward to providing you with an even better service in future. To those who have not used Their services before I can say from experience that they are definitely worth a go.

This is Spain
Exhibitions lots of Christmas goodies!
The next event of the very successful ‘This is Spain Exhibitions’ will be held on the Costa Blanca/Costa Calida border at the prestigious four star ‘Hotel Thalasia’ in San Pedro del Pinatar. The exhibition will run from the 19th – 21st November 2010, an excellent time for the Christmas market for businesses and the public alike.
With the exhibition being held so close to Christmas, it will be an ideal opportunity for businesses to promote their Christmas products and gift vouchers. Anyone thinking of surprising their loved one with a kitten, bow in hair, for Christmas will be able to obtain one free of charge from a cat charity!
The venue is a modern, luxury hotel with easy access from both the N332 and the AP7 motorways and only 20 minutes from Torrevieja. The exhibition hall is very large, beautifully appointed and has a separate access, with a wheelchair ramp. It is fully air-conditioned. For those with SatNav, the address is Avda. Del Puerto, 327-329 30740 San Pedro del Pinatar Murcia.
Always very popular at the exhibitions are the cheeses and wines and this one will be no exception but with the addition of various chocolates! Spigelu Crystal by Riedel, knives by Laguiole and luxury jellies and chutneys will also be on offer.
this is spain
As you would expect in a four star hotel, there are restaurants and there will be specific bar and snack bar areas for the exhibition weekend in addition to comfortable seating where visitors can relax. To reach the hotel, take the Lo Pagan coast road from the roundabout with the boat on the N332. The hotel is on the right hand side. There is ample parking. For more information about the venue, take a look at www.thalasia. com Having learnt a lot over the years, Christine now limits the number of each type of business that can exhibit at the shows. This means that visitors have a wide range of products and services to see, and that companies can promote their products without being overwhelmed by competition. For exhibitors and visitors alike, there will be a free crèche available within the hotel for young children over the age of two.
Don’t miss all those great films on satellite television this year and get all your Christmas presents from the displays of jewellery, watches, handbags, remote control toys and more. Those concerned about keeping warm in the months ahead can see new heating systems. Bookings are now being taken, with businesses such as financial services, heating systems, satellite television, glass curtains, health and beauty, accessories and costume jewellery, home and garden, schools, pool products and much more already signed up. Charities such as the Costa Blanca Samaritans and the Butterfly Children will also be represented.

Culture & Progress…it’s a fine line.. it’s just a shame the politicians drew it… In the years after the Second World War the residents of Crevillente decided it was about time that they started to hit the beach at the weekends and spend their summers by the sea. They headed for El Pinet beach, near La Marina village, and set up camp, literally. Each year these same people would come down and set up their ‘shelter’ for the summer and each year they would respect each other’s space by keeping to the same areas. Over time those canvas and wood shelters have changed into brick-built chalets but more or less, they remain in the
same family as those who first stuck their flag in the ground almost seventy years ago. But in 2018 El Pinet beach will have come full circle in the space of less than a century from when it was first ‘civilized’ - and will be razed to the ground under the 1988 Ley de la Costa which has affected properties all along the coast including Santa Pola and Guardamar. Amongst the more than fifty well-kept chalets that line the beach is the Hostal Maruja which has sat at the centre of this parade for sixty years and as you can see from the images, hasn’t

NOVEMBER 2010 Animals with long hair, especially dogs and ponies, and people if their hair is tied up into a pony tail/bunches and sing folk music, are to be avoided for a good proportion of this month especially in public showers or swimming pools or if they are naked. Truffles, trifles but not Francois Truffaut directed movies are well starred until dusk on the 19th of the month. Your buff Taurean physique you have successfully built up by avoiding eating pastries with cream in is about to be challenged this month with a pastry wielding Scorpio. Food fights are now inevitable between the two star signs and Scorpio will challenge Taurus from the 18th of the month onwards. Throw, but do not eat, to preserve your hard won abs. Mid fives are your preferred greeting over high fives especially for short people, and those in wheel chairs. Speeding, drunk driving and talking on your cell phone while driving like a possessed banshee, are all well starred this month on major and middle roads, but not the smaller country roads where farmers need you to stop and reverse in some game of Farmer Chicken the guy in the tractor has never lost.

MEET THE FAMILY...
THE BUS AND THE FLY In a crowded city at a busy bus stop, a woman who was waiting for a bus was wearing a tight leather skirt. As the bus stopped and it was her turn to get on, she became aware that her skirt was too tight to allow her leg to come up to the height of the first step of the bus.. Slightly embarrassed and with a quick smile to the bus driver, she reached behind her to unzip her skirt a little, thinking that this would give her enough slack to raise her leg. Again, she tried to make the step only to discover she still couldn‛t. So, a little more embarrassed, she once again reached behind her to unzip her skirt a little more, and for the second time attempted the step, and, once again, much to her chagrin, she could not raise her leg. With little smile to the driver, she again reached behind to unzip a little more and again was unable to make the step. About this time, a large Texan who was standing behind her picked her up easily by the waist and placed her gently on the step of the bus. She went ballistic and turned to the would-be Samaritan and screeched, ‘How dare you touch my body! I don‛t even know who you are!‛ The Texan smiled and drawled, ‘Well, ma‛am, normally I would agree with you, but after you unzipped

A girl asks her boyfriend to come over Friday night to meet, and have dinner with her parents.
Five Germans in an Audi Quattro arrive at the Italian border.
Since this is such a big event, the girl announces to her boyfriend that after dinner, she would like to go out and make love for the first time.
The Italian ICA Officer stops the car and tells them: “It‛sa illegala to putta 5 pippel in a Quattro.” “Vot do you min i‛s illegal?” asks the German driver.
The boy is ecstatic, but he has never had sex before, so he takes a trip to the pharmacist to get some condoms.. He tells the pharmacist it‛s his first time and the pharmacist helps the boy for about an hour. He tells the boy everything there is to know about condoms and sex. At the register, the pharmacist asks the boy how many condoms he‛d like to buy, a 3-pack, 10-pack, or family pack. The boy insists on the family pack because he thinks he will be rather busy, it being his first time and all. That night, the boy shows up at the girl‛s parents house and meets his girlfriend at the door. “Oh, I‛m so excited for you to meet my parents, come on in!” The boy goes inside and is taken to the dinner table where the girl‛s parents are seated. The boy quickly offers to say grace and bows his head. A minute passes, and the boy is still deep in prayer, with his head down. 10 minutes pass, and still no movement from the boy. Finally, after 20 minutes with his head down, the girlfriend leans over and whispers to the boyfriend, ‘I had no idea you were this religious.‛ The boy turns, and whispers back, ‘I had no idea your father was a pharmacist..‛

The Potato Family
Young Love
“Really?” said the lass in a whisper, filled with anticipation. “Aye,” said the lad, nodding. The girl looked away in shyness, began to blush, and bit her lip in anticipation of the ultimate request. Then he said, “Dae ye nae think it’s aboot time ye paid me the first three pennies?”
One night, the Potato family sat down to dinner, Mother Potato and her three daughters. Midway through the meal, the eldest daughter spoke up. “Mother Potato?” she said. “I have an announcement to make.”
This guy who works at the Elche pickle factory comes home and hands his wife 50 euros. She asked him what it was from and he told her that he won it in a bet -- the guys at the factory bet him 50 euros that he wouldn’t stick his willy in the pickle slicer. The wife was surprised and said she wanted to make sure he was still intact.
“And what might that be?” said Mother, seeing the obvious excitement in her eldest daughter’s eyes. “Well,” replied the daughter, with a proud but sheepish grin, “I’m getting married!” The other daughters squealed with surprise as Mother Potato exclaimed, “Married! That’s wonderful! And who are you marrying, Eldest daughter?” “I’m marrying a Russet!”
He pulled down his pants and, indeed, it was all there, unharmed.
“A Russet!” replied Mother Potato with pride. “Oh, a Russet is a fine tater, a fine tater indeed!”
“But what about the pickle slicer,” asked the wife, perplexed. “Oh, she liked it too,” answered the husband.
As the family shared in the eldest daughter’s joy, the middle daughter spoke up. “Mother? I, too, have an announcement.”
The Perfect Woman and The Perfect Man Once upon a time, a perfect man and a perfect woman met. After a perfect courtship, they had a perfect wedding. Their life together was, of course, perfect. One snowy, stormy Christmas Eve, this perfect couple was driving their perfect car along a winding road, when they noticed someone at the side of the road in distress. Being the perfect couple, they stopped to help. There stood Santa Claus with a huge bundle of toys. Not wanting to disappoint any children on the eve of Christmas, the perfect couple loaded Santa and his toys into their vehicle. Soon they were driving along delivering toys. Unfortunately, the driving conditions deteriorated and the perfect couple and Santa Claus had an accident. Only one of them survived the accident. Who was the survivor? Answer: The perfect woman survived. She’s the only one who really existed in the first place. Everyone knows there is no Santa Claus and there is no such thing as a perfect man. Women stop reading here. That is the end of the joke. Men keep reading... So, if there is no perfect man and no Santa Claus, the perfect woman must have been driving. And that explains why there was a car accident. By the way, if you’re a woman and you’re reading this, this illustrates another point: Women never listen, either.
“And what might that be?” encouraged Mother Potato. Not knowing quite how to begin, the middle daughter paused, then said with conviction, “I, too, am getting married!” “You, too!” Mother Potato said with joy. “That’s wonderful! Twice the good news in one evening! And who are you marrying, Middle Daughter?” “I’m marrying an King Edward!” beamed the middle daughter. “An Idaho!” said Mother Potato with joy. “Oh, an Idaho is a fine tater, a fine tater indeed!” Once again, the room came alive with laughter and excited plan for the future, when the youngest Potato daughter interrupted. “Mother? Mother Potato? Um, I, too, have an announcement to make.” “Yes?” said Mother Potato with great anticipation. “Well,” began the youngest Potato daughter with the same sheepish grin as her eldest sister before her, “I hope this doesn’t come as a shock to you, but I am getting married, as well!” “Really?” said Mother Potato with sincere excitement. “All of my lovely daughters married! What wonderful news! And who, pray tell, are you marrying, Youngest Daughter?” “I’m marrying John Motson!” “JOHN MOTSON?!” Mother Potato scowled suddenly. “But he’s just a com-

Habeus Corpus
WHAT’S on
The new production, by the Gasp theatre company, of Alan Bennett’s play “Habeas Corpus” premiered recently at Santa Pola’s Casa de Cultura. The well attended performances were well received by the partisan audiences, most of whom turned out in their sartorial elegance, befitting of a First Night. The curtains opened to display a minimal set consisting of two screens each adorned with a seaside cartoon type painting, three chairs, and a ceiling light. This was all that was needed to double as both a doctor’s surgery and the living room of Dr. Arthur Wicksteed and his family, consisting of a portly over amorous wife, a wet and unworldly son, Dennis, and the doctor’s sister Miss Constance Wicksteed. The play, a Bennett farce, revolves around Miss Wicksteed, a forty-something spinster who is somewhat lacking in the bosom department, deciding to buy a false rubber breast enhancer for 5 pounds (it was written some time ago). As with all farce, a number of characters have to visit the Doctors surgery and get mistaken for other characters. These include Lady Rumpers, recently returned from Africa, and her daughter Felicity; Sir Percy Shorter, another doctor who was once the sweetheart of Mrs Wicksteed; and Cannon Throbbing, who has a need to hear any salacious tales and a habit of looking up women’s skirts. The salesman of the breast enhancer arrives and gets mistaken for Sir Percy Shorter, who himself turns out to be the biological father of Felicity Rumpers. Felicity, herself pregnant by another unknown suitor, tries to entrap the soppy Dennis, who thinks he only has weeks to live. All the confusion leads to the usual taking off of trousers, dresses and tops, which is expected in farce. The Bennett script raced on and keeps the audience amused and everyone seemed to enjoy the night. Although this was GASP’s first real show and sometimes both their lack of experience and their nervousness showed through, two characters shone through. Mr Purdue, a depressed man who seeks solace in suicide because he can never get to see the Doctor, is extremely well portrayed by Terry Lacey. The star of the show, however, is Christine Lombardy who, as the nosey housekeeper, links all the somewhat tabloid scenes together and keeps the play moving along at the pace at which farce should be played. All in all, a commendable first attempt by this new theatre group who, with improved stagecraft and ability to remember their lines, should produce watchable theatre in the future.
Wh
This country has always fascinated me and just recently I have had opportunity to visit this wonderfully interesting place. Fez was the destination which is the Spiritual and Cultural Centre of this amazing country. Fez is northern Morocco, the most ancient of imperial cities of enormous variety and contrast. We visited the most beautiful Mosques and Synagogues right in the centre of Fez where the Medina (marketplace) is in full action. And I mean full action, everyone having to step to the sides of the narrow lanes while the donkeys laden with anything from firewood to pots and pans pass through. Everything imaginable is for sale in the market, its like an Aladdin’s Cave, with plenty of bargins including bronze, pottery, gold jewellery, beautiful materials, carpets, not to mention all the fruit, veg, meat and fish. Over 80,000 people pass through this market everyday - so you can just imagine how busy it is. A visit to the Spice Market was also on the Agenda. We also took a trip out of the main area of Fez to the Atalas Mountains, where there is a huge beautiful lake where treasured cattle bathed in the cool waters and the views were spectacular. On the main road through the woodlands there were tame monkeys which was a huge surprise! Morocco is not for the faint hearted, but a place you will always remember with amazement. We are already planning our next trip to this remarkable and magical place! Written by Anita of Shiny Lamps
