How to keep your New Years Resoultions If you're like most people, you've probably experienced the sudden burst of motivation that comes in early January, as holiday indulgences make their way to the waistline and New Year's resolutions force a new look at the figure we see in the mirror. Below we have complied a list of the top 10 resoultions people make every year.

Also learn the steps to help your keep to your resolutions.

1. Spend More Time with Family & Friends Recent polls conducted

by General Nutrition Centers, Quicken, and others shows that more than 50% of people vow to appreciate loved ones and spend more time with family and friends this year.

2. Fit in Fitness The evidence is in for fitness. Regular exercise has been associated with more health benefits than anything else known to man.

Studies show that it reduces the risk of some cancers, increases longevity, helps achieve and maintain weight loss, enhances mood, lowers blood pressure, and even improves arthritis.

3. Tame the Bulge By recent studies a massive percentage of people are considered overweight or obese, so it is not surprising to find that weight loss is one of the most popular New Year's resolutions.

Many heavy drinkers fail to quit cold turkey but do much better when they taper gradually, or even learn to moderate their drinking. If you have decided that you want to stop drinking, there is a world of help and support available.

7. Get Out of Debt Was money a big source of stress in your life last year? Join the millions of overspenders who have resolved to spend this year getting a handle on their finances. It's a promise that will repay itself many times over in the year ahead.

8. Learn Something New Have you vowed to make this year the year

to learn something new? Perhaps you are considering a career change, want to learn a new language, or just how to fix your computer? Whether you take a course or read a book, you'll find education to be one of the easiest, most motivating New Year's resolutions to keep.

9. Help Others A popular, non-selfish New Year's resolution, volunteerism can take many forms.

Whether you choose to spend time helping out at your local library, mentoring a child, or building a house, there are many nonprofit volunteer organizations that could really use your help. Or if your time is really in short supply, maybe you can at least find it in you to donate the furniture, clothing and other household items that you no longer need, rather than leaving them out by the curb to fill up landfills.

10. Get Organized On just about every New Year resolution top ten list, organization can be a very reasonable goal. Whether you want your home organized enough that you can invite someone over on a whim, or your office organized enough that you can find the stapler when you need it.

Steps for keeping your resoultion Choose the Right Resolution For all too many resolutions, failure is virtually assured at the offset because the resolutions are not made with serious intent and deliberation. The first trick is to choose the right resolution, for the right reasons.

Give some thought to what you really want and why you want it. What direct benefits do you hope to receive? Is a weight-loss resolution meant to improve your self-esteem? Will getting organized help de-stress your life? By learning something new will it benefit your job? Identifying the "why" helps you avoid setting goals for the wrong reasons. Or just for the sake of it.

Next, decide how difficult to make your resolution. Aiming high generally makes people try harder. You need to set a set a goal in the middle, not to difficult you will never be able to do it but difficult enough to make you work hard, for the optimal performace.

Finally, be specific about your resolution and make it official. Being specific means phrasing the goal in words that make it obvious whether or not the goal has been completed, by a specific date. A resolution "to lose 15 pounds by April 30th" is much more effective than the ambiguously phrased goal "to lose weight."

Once you've decided on the wording, formally commit. At a minimum, write the goal down on paper or for the best results write it in a diary and track your performance. For even more commitment, look yourself in the mirror and state the goal out loud. This may sound corny, but it works. The important thing to remember that a resolution is fundamentally a commitment to yourself. Make the commitment formal. The more ceremonious, the better.

Create a Plan Upon clarifying the exact goal that you are setting, next create a plan for how you intend to accomplish your goal. With any reasonably good plan, you are fairly likely to make significant progress or actually accomplish your goal. Without a plan, you are very unlikely to succeed.

The key to constructing a good plan is to identify the exact steps that you will take toward accomplishing your goal, and assigning due dates to those steps. Start a diary to help track your progess, and your next goals.

State daily how much exercise you will do and make a food diary to track how many calories you are eating.

that your plan was too aggressive, or that your environment has changed in some unexpected fashion. Either way, simply adjust your plan and continue onward.

Coming up with a comprehensive list of steps is not easy for everyone. If you encounter difficulty, the solution is to get help, which helps people through the planning process by first asking people to identify all of the obstacles that stand between them and their desired goal. Once the obstacles have been identified, it is fairly easy for anybody to generate a comprehensive to-do list for accomplishing the goal.

Finally, the flip-side of setting difficult resolutions is that you must remember to acknowledge partial success. Losing 15 pounds is cause for celebration, even if your original goal was to lose 20 pounds. If you are just one step closer to your goal, then you are better off than before you began. Every time you get closer to accomplish a goal treat youself to something, if you are losing weight treat yourself to some chocolate or a takeaway.

Stay on Track With a good plan in hand, making significant progress toward your goal may require very little discipline for those who live strictly by daily planners and love nothing more than checking off items on our to-do lists.

But for those of us who can use a little help with staying on top of details, the answer, once again, is to seek outside help. The idea is to find some external thing that keeps you motivated, get a friend to send you reminder emails or texts about what you should be doing next. Telling friends and family about yout goals will help you as they will want you to succede and will sure enough tell you off if you are going off track!

Remain Flexible and Keep on Going A recent realization among goal-setting experts is the need to continually modify our approach—sometimes even changing or abandoning a goal altogether. The reason for this is that circumstances beyond our control frequently crop up at the most unexpected and inconvenient times. We can also expect our short-term and long-term priorities to change. So long as we build flexibility into our expectations, we can simply adjust things as we go.

It's therefore best to periodically reevaluate our goals and plans, perhaps once per quarter for a year-long goal such as a New Year's resolution. First, make certain that the goal itself still exactly reflects what you want to do.

If it's not, adjust it. Next, go through your plan and identify any portions that aren't working well, even if it simply means giving yourself more time to complete a particular task or milestone. Keep in mind that missed due dates do not necessarily indicate a problem with your performance; it might simply mean

•Only 8% of people are always successful in achieving their resolutions. 19% achieve their resolutions every other year.

Getting Divorced In Spain

Although divorce is not the nicest subject, it is a very real concern for many people, especially for non-Spanish residents who are unsure of the necessary steps. Here are a few popular questions that we have been asked.

1. I am not Spanish, but I have been resident in Spain for years.

Can I get divorced in Spain?

Yes. Even if your spouse has now left Spain, you may also be able to divorce here, so long as certain conditions are met. The Spanish courts may then have to apply Spanish law or a foreign law, depending on the particular circumstances of your case.

2. Am I likely to be better off divorcing my husband in Spain or abroad?

In some cases, the position can be the same. Where two English people, married in the UK and divorcing in Spain, for example, the Spanish courts must apply English law: so, if you’d be entitled to be paid X in the UK, you should in theory be entitled to be paid X here too.

3. How long must we be legally separated before we can divorce in Spain?

If Spanish law can be applied to your case, you can apply directly for divorce one you’ve been married for three months - no previous legal separation is required. But in those cases where domestic violence can be proved, no such three month period has to pass and the victim can apply for divorce straight away.

4. My husband says he has a Spanish lawyer friend who can act for both of us in the divorce – is that OK? This is right only if both parties completely agree on all the terms of a

divorce and there is absolutely no disagreement between them. If you´re not sure, it might be better to have your own lawyer.

5. My wife left Spain after we were divorced a couple of months ago, returning to the UK with our twins. I have had one visit to the children in England, but now she’s being difficult about my seeing them and is basically putting up all sorts of excuses to stop me from doing so. Can you do anything to help?

Probably, but we need to move fast. The Spanish courts will retain the right to re-open the contact aspects of your divorce for a period of three months from when the children were lawfully taken out of Spain to live in the UK. 6. My wife and I both live in Ireland, and are divorcing. The only link we have with Spain is a Spanish holiday home. How can this best be dealt with in our divorce?

First of all, the Irish courts must understand that there’s no simple “mirror order” procedure in Spain. The Irish divorce order can be made to apply to your Spanish home, but the order will need very careful wording. The best thing is for your solicitor to work with your Irish counsel to ensure that the phrasing of the Irish court order is correct before it is made.

Fast Track Divorce in Spain 1.What’s a “fast-track” or “express” divorce under Spanish law?

It’s a shortened “non-contentious” court procedure that a married couple can use to get divorced in Spain, as long as they agree to file the court application jointly (or one of them does that with the other’s consent).

2. Why is it called “express?

Because you don’t need to wait for the court to recognise a previous matrimonial separation. The only timing requirement is that at least three months have passed since the date of the marriage.

3. What grounds can be used to get an “express” divorce in Spain?

There’s no need to state any grounds, so there’s no need to claim there’s been unreasonable behaviour, adultery, etc. If both spouses want to end their marriage, and are in complete agreement, the Spanish courts don’t need to know why.

4. But surely the courts will have to decide about children’s custody and contact issues and financial matters?

Of course, but this’ll be done taking into account the written agreement (convenio regulador in Spanish) filed in court by the couple: this must include their proposed arrangements for the family home, custody of and contact with under-age children, distribution of assets and other financial measures (including child maintenance). If such arrangements are reasonable, the Spanish courts aren’t likely to interfere with or modify them. In any event, when there are minor children, the Public Prosecutor will have to issue his/her opinion on this agreement and, if this opinion is favourable, the court is not likely to object.

5. Can fast-track divorces apply to foreigners in Spain ?

If Spanish law applies to their case (in accordance with article 107 of the Spanish Civil Code) there will be no problem. But when a foreign law must be applied, then it will depend on whether this foreign law establishes additional requirements that prevent a fast-track divorce. For instance, if a foreign law requires that the parties must have been married for at least one year before being entitled to apply for divorce or if it requires a previous court resolution of separation, the Spanish court will not be able to override such requirements.

6. How long does it take to obtain a fast-track divorce order ?

That depends on the court involved, but generally speaking it should take a few months.

7. Do the husband and wife need to appear in court ?

Yes. Under Spanish law, the agreement (convenio) between the parties must be signed first between themselves and, at a subsequent date, before the Judge. Some Judges allow this second signature to be given by a representative, but this will require the granting of a relevant power of attorney before a notary in Spain or before a foreign notary. In this last case, the document will have to be stamped with the Hague Convention apostil and translated by an officially approved translator.

New Year, New You? Have you ever made a new years resolution that you didn’t keep? Well you’re not the only one! 24% of people have NEVER reached their new years resolution goals. Like most people if your resolution is to lose a bit of weight we have found some handy tips to help you along the way.

Weight Loss Tips Mind Tricks 1. Take your time Eat slowly. Your food can take up to 30 minutes to reach your stomach which is why lots of us eat too much as we don't realise we're full.

2. Stick to the list Make a list before you go shopping and plan your meals and snacks out for the week. Don’t buy anything that’s not on list, no matter how good it looks!

3. Keep a diary Keep a food diary and write down everything you have eaten that day. You may be surprised at how much you have consumed. The diary can also help identify your weak spots so you can find a way of combating them.

4. Find inspiration Keep those photos of your old, skinny self, to help keep you going.

5. Chart your progress Mark you weight loss on a graph each week. It easier for you to see your progress and that your getting closer to your goal. It also helps see which weeks you lost the most weight so you can identify why.

6. Portion control Swap dinner plates for smaller ones. It automatically makes you eat smaller portions but makes you think you have still ate a plateful!

7. Clean your teeth After eating dinner, if you want something sweet, simply go and clean your teeth. Any sugar cravings should immediately disappear.

Easy Exercise

8. 1, 2, 3...

When you're jogging and ready to give up, count to 100 and keep going. You'll manage it almost every time, sometimes more than once in a single run!

9. Fat-burning chores You can burn 300 calories an hour cleaning the house, if you give it a really good going over.

10. Get off your bum!

Little things can make all the difference. Instead of emailing a colleague at work, walk over to their desk!

11. Girl power Slim with a friend. It'll help you stick with it - if you're having a day when you don't feel like going to the gym, or just want to order a pizza, there's someone there to spur you on.

12. Weight loss gadget Buy a pedometer, and set it for 10,000 steps a day. It will really encourage you to walk.

13. Switch off cruise control Increase the intensity of everyday activities, from lunges while you Hoover to power-walking with the dog.

14. Race to clean the quickest Turn boring household chores into something more fun by racing. Race yourself by setting a timer or stop-watch. This will get your body moving faster and burning calories while getting the house clean.

15. Dance, dance, dance If you’re not a fan of the gym, try learning a

dance routine for a fun and different way to work out 16. Park further away Park the car further away from your destination or get off the bus a stop early and walk the rest of the way.

Eat Smart

17. Stop for tea-time Green tea helps burn fat. Honest!

18. Treat yourself occasionally Have a little of what you fancy, from time to time. A bit of chocolate or some low-fat crisps won't ruin your diet.

19. Stay in control Every meal you prepare should be at least 50% vegetables. The other half should be made up of lean meat or fish and carbs.

20. Tropical fruits Exotic fruits like pineapple and pawpaw are good at protecting against cellulite as they help break down fat deposits.

21. Order well When eating out, any meat that's chargrilled, poached, steamed or grilled is a good option.

22. Hot hot hot!

Spicy foods speed up the metabolism, which means you can burn more fat - great for weight loss!

23. Breakfast Follow the old saying, 'Breakfast like a queen, eat lunch like a princess, and dine like a pauper.' It means eating less as the day goes on, and it works!

7 Extreme Diets

(We highly advise you not to try!)

There are times when we all think we'd do anything to lose weight but some people really take dieting that step too far. We round up 7 of the maddest extreme diets out there. Not to be tried at home!

Lemonade Diet/Maple Syrup Diet

Extreme factor: 8/10

Here's a diet that Cheryl Cole likes to use when she's worried about putting on weight. She swears by the cleanse to detox when she needs to lose weight fast.

This diet became famous when Beyonce Knowles used it to shed 20 pounds for her role in Dreamgirls. It's pretty simple; mix Madal Bal Natural Tree Syrup with water, lemon juice and cayenne pepper, then drink the concoction instead of eating meals.

This is a very radical way to lose weight and the list of side effects is long, from diarrhoea to headaches, nausea and mental irritability - we think we'll give this one a miss!

Grapefruit Diet

Extreme factor: 6/10

Apparently there's a special ingredient in grapefruit that, when eaten with a form of protein, triggers a fat-burning process and therefore results in weight loss. So, the idea is to start each meal with half a grapefruit, eat lots of protein and drink plenty of water and black coffee. While this diet may help you lose a few pounds, any weight lost will pile straight back on once you return to your normal diet. Such a drastic reduction in your intake of calories can also result in dizziness and an upset stomach, plus it's so very boring!

The Chemical Diet

Extreme factor: 5/10

This diet consists of forcing yourself to only eat lean, unfried meat, water, eggs and vegetables, with no fat and just a tiny bit of bread or fruit - hardly a laugh a minute! Apparently the combination of foods is supposed to interact chemically to burn fat. We'll admit that this diet may be a quick fix for that upcoming wedding or holiday but an extreme diet plan like this is not nutritionally balanced and does not contain enough calories for a healthy lifestyle.

The Cabbage Soup Diet

Extreme factor: 6/10

The Cabbage Soup Diet works exactly as it sounds - you eat copious amounts of cabbage soup and not a lot else. Basically, the cabbage soup diet works because you are cutting down your calorie intake to near starvation levels. Some say that it is a complete waste of time because the sudden lack of food forces the body into starvation mode which slows down your metabolism and encourages your body to hang on to fat.

Tapeworm Diet

Extreme factor: 10/10

The tapeworm diet has got to be one of the most extreme, no, stupid concepts we've ever come across. It involves swallowing an actual worm (it would probably be in egg form, but it's still disgusting), the tapeworm then wriggles around in your intestines interfering with your digestion process and eating up all your food, making it possible for you to consume more calories without putting on weight. This is not only a desperate diet technique, but it's incredibly dangerous, with death being one of the possible side effects. No thanks!

Dr Siegal's Cookie Diet

Extreme factor: 7/10

Don't get too excited, this diet isn't as fun as it sounds. True, it does consist of eating cookies for breakfast and lunch but these aren't tasty chocolate chip cookies, they contain a mere 90 calories per cookie and are made with low GI ingredients such as whole wheat flour, bran and oats. You're allowed to have a high-protein dinner and then if you're still hungry, you can treat yourself to two more cookies. Yippee!

The Macrobiotic Diet

Extreme factor: 7/10

Gwyneth Paltrow made the headlines a few years ago when she revealed she was a devotee of this extremely strict diet. The main emphasis of this diet is wholegrains, these are supposed to make up 60% of all meals and the rest should be made up of mostly raw vegetables. It's safe to say that the list of what you can't eat is longer than the list of what you can eat. Say goodbye to anything and everything remotely fun or tasty, for example: Meat, processed foods, dairy products, eggs, sugar, poultry products and alcohol. Boring.

Get rid of those January blues with some of these great recipes. Easy on the money, quick on time and as simple as riding a bike. With these cheap, quick and easy recipes you can’t go wrong.

Sausage and Apple Toad in the Hole Ingredients 2tbsp olive oil 6 British pork, leek and chive sausages 1 large red onion, thinly sliced 2 English cox apples, cored, peeled and quartered 6 fresh sage leaves 100g plain flour 2 free range eggs, beaten 200ml semi-skimmed milk

Shepards Pie Ingredients 30g (1oz) dripping or 1 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 1 tbsp plain flour 150ml (¼ pint) hot stock or thin brown gravy 1 tomato, skinned and chopped Salt and freshly

ground black pepper A few drops of gravy browning, optional 250g (8oz) cold, cooked lamb, chopped or minced For the topping: 500g (1lb) potatoes Knob of butter A little milk 600ml (1 pint) pie dish

1. Set the oven to 190°C/Gas Mark 5.

2. Put the potatoes on to boil.

3. Heat half the dripping or oil in a frying pan, add the onion and fry gently for 5 mins until tender. Add the rest of the dripping, or oil, and when hot, stir in the flour and cook until it begins

Chicken Tikka Masala Ingredients 2 tbs groundnut oil 1 onion, peeled and sliced 500g (1lb) chicken breast escalopes, each cut into 4 Salt and ground black pepper 3 tbs tikka masala paste 500g carton passata 170ml carton single cream To serve: ¼ cucumber, cut into fine sticks 5 radishes, cut into fine sticks 2 carrots, peeled and cut into fine sticks 1 teaspoon malt vinegar Boiled basmati rice

1.Preheat the oven to 220ºC/425ºF/gas mark 7. Place the oil in a large cast iron gratin dish or roasting tin and heat in the oven until very hot.

2.Add the sausages, sliced onion and apple quarters and baste with the hot oil.

3.Tear the sage leaves into pieces and scatter over the sausages. Cook in the preheated oven for 10 minutes until sausages are just starting to brown.

4.While the sausages are cooking, sift the flour into a bowl and season.

5.Whisk in the eggs and milk to give a smooth batter. Pour the batter over the sausages and return to the oven for 25–30 minutes until the batter is puffy, crisp and golden and the sausages are browned and cooked through.

6.Serve with creamy mashed potato and spring greens.

1. Heat the oil in a frying pan, add the onion and cook gently for 5 mins to soften it.

2. Add chicken, season and cook gently for 5 mins, turning meat as needed, until browned.

3. Add the tikka masala paste, stir for 1 min, then add the passata and warm through.

4. Stir in the cream and simmer for 5 mins.

5. Meanwhile, mix the cucumber, radish and carrot with vinegar.

Serve alongside the curry and rice.

7. Bake in the oven for 20-30 mins or put it under a grill to brown the top.

Gammon steak with chilli pineapple relish Ingredients 1-2 gammon steaks 2 eggs 1tsp olive oil 1 red onion

227g canned pineapple 1tbsp sweet chilli sauce Rind of 1 lime

1. Pre-heat the grill and cook 1-2 gammon steaks for 6-8 minutes on each side. Then fry 2 eggs in a little vegetable oil.

2. Meanwhile, heat 1tsp of olive oil and cook 1 red onion, thinly sliced, until slightly soft.

3. Add 227g chopped canned pineapple (making sure to reserve the juice) and 1tbsp sweet chilli sauce. Simmer until reduced, then add the rind of 1 lime.

4. Serve the gammon with oven baked chunky chips, some of the chilli pineapple relish and a fried egg.

Sausage and Lentil Hotpot 1.Heat the oil in a large pan, add the sausages and fry on a medium heat for 15 mins until browned. Remove from the pan with a slotted spoon.

2.Add the onion, garlic, leek and carrot and cook for 5 mins until softened.

3.Add the cumin, bay leaves, lentils and the water. Bring to the boil then simmer on a low-medium heat for 15 mins, stirring occasionally until thick and soupy and the lentils are almost tender.

4.Stir in the kale or shredded cavolo nero, return the sausages to the pan, cover and cook for a further 5 mins until the cabbage is tender.

5.Discard the bay leaves and season to taste. Serve in warmed bowls.

Ingredients 1tbsp olive oil 454g pack pork sausages 1 medium onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 leek, sliced 1 large carrot, cubed 1tsp ground cumin 2 bay leaves 1-1.25lt water.

200g lentils, soaked in water for an hour 200g curly kale or cavolo nero, shredded

Ingredients 500g (17½ oz) lean minced beef 1 large onion, chopped 1 clove garlic, crushed 2tsp chilli powder 1tsp ground cumin 400g (14oz) can chopped tomatoes with chillies and peppers 300ml beef stock 1 red pepper, deseeded and diced 1 can of kidney beans 1 can of sweetcorn

Low Fat Chilli con Carne 1.Cook the mince in a large pan until it browns. Add the onion and garlic, stirring for a few mins, then add the chilli powder and cumin and stir over a low heat for another minute.

2.Add the chopped tomatoes and stock. Stir together and bring to a simmer gently for 15 mins.

3.Add the red pepper and simmer for another 10 mins, then add the kidney beans and sweetcorn.

4.Season and cook for 5 mins. Serve with rice.

Chicken Provencal Ingredients 1.5-1.75kg (3-3½lb) chicken 2 tbsp cooking (olive) oil 2 medium onions, peeled and chopped 1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed, optional 1 level tbsp plain flour 150ml (¼ pint) hot chicken stock 400g can whole or chopped tomatoes 2 level tsp mixed dried herbs (we used 1 heaped tbsp freshly chopped

parsley and basil mixed) Salt and ground black pepper 1.25 litre (2 pint) flameproof dish

1.Joint the chicken, using a sharp knife. Take off the legs, and cut them through at the joint, to give a thigh and drumstick. Take off the wings with a little of the breast meat. Remove the wing tips (use in stock with the carcass). Take the breast off the bone, skin it and cut each breast in half. You should have 10 pieces of chicken.

2.Heat the oil in the dish and fry chicken for about 5 mins until lightly browned all over. Take pieces out and put on a plate.

3.Add the onions and garlic, if using, to the dish and fry for 3 mins.

Stir in the flour and when it has absorbed the fat, take the pan off the heat. Stir in the stock, tomatoes and herbs.

4.Put pan back on the heat, and bring the sauce to the boil, stirring all the time. Season. Add the chicken pieces, cover and simmer over a low heat for about 45 mins, until meat is tender. Stir occasionally during cooking. Serve with rice or potatoes.

Salmon and Broccoli stirfry

1.In a heavy-bottomed wok over a high heat, add the oil and stir fry the broccoli stems, spring onions and chopped ginger with 1/2 a cup of water for 3 to 4 minutes.

2.Add the black bean sauce and the coriander, then the salmon and stir over a heat for 1 minute.

3.Remove and serve with noodles or rice cooked as per the instructions on pack.

Ingredients 2 x 180g cans skinless and boneless red salmon, drained 2 tbsp vegetable oil 600g purple sprouting broccoli 4 spring onions cut into 1-inch slices

2 tsp finely chopped ginger 1/2 cup water 100ml black bean sauce 10g coriander leaves To serve: 200g egg noodles

Cheats Chicken Puff Pie 1.Heat oil in a large pan. Add shallots and carrot, and fry for 4-5 mins.

Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. Fry the chicken for 4-5 mins until browned, then stir in the gravy, shallots and carrots. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cover and simmer for 20 mins until chicken is cooked through.

2.Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 220°C (425°F, gas mark 7). Roll out

the pastry and cut out four 13cm (5in) diameter rounds. Cut leaves from the trimmings and stick on the lids with a little beaten egg.

3.Place the lids on a baking sheet and brush with beaten egg. Bake for 15-20 mins until risen and golden.

Add the peas to the casserole and simmer for 2-3 mins until tender.

Spoon casserole on to four warmed plates and top with pastry lids.

Serve with green beans

Pansies: A splash of colour in the winter The scientific name of this hybrid plant is Viola x Wittrockiana and belongs to the violet family. We find out the history of this flower and tips to care for it.

History of the Pansy The history of the pansy is linked forever to the viola, its ancestor. viola is a large genus containing 500 species according to Hortus Third. Violas were familiar to people living in Greece in the 4th century B.C. The centre of origin for violas was continental Europe. The hardy but delicate viola was cultivated by the Greeks for herbal medicinal use and much later inspired William Shakespeare to write of romance.

Some time after the 4th century B.C. in Europe, an acute observer noticed a plant similar to a viola but growing in open areas with more sunlight. This plant thrived in alpine meadows and on rocky ledges.

Someone named this plant a wild pansy. Possibly, it was a person living in

France who noticed this plant because the word pansy is traced back to the French word pensee, meaning thought or remembrance.

Now known as Viola tricolour, this early wild pansy had two clear differences from the viola. The plant grew from the ground on one main stem and branched above ground. Viola plants branch below ground with many plants sharing the same root system. The wild Pansy bloom was larger and more round than Violas.

Violas and wild pansies were cultivated in Europe by many gardeners.

The origin of the plants we now call pansy began in Iver, Buckinghamshire, England. In the early 1800's an inquisitive Lord Gambier and his gardener William Thompson began crossing various Viola species.

Records tell us crosses were made among V. tricolour, V. Lutea and a blue flowered species possibly of Russian origin, V. altacia. These breeders selected plants for unusual colours, colour combinations and increasing flower size. The initial results were similar to the V. tricolour.

History credits the gardener, William Thompson, with the discovery of a cross that began the new species V. x Wittrockiana. He found a bloom

that no longer had lines of dark color on the flower but huge blocks of color on the lower petals called the "face." Discovered in 1839 and named "Medora," this pansy and its progeny became popular with gardeners and breeders throughout Europe.

By 1850 many new strains of pansies were available to Europeans.

Breeding occurred in England, Scotland and Switzerland. Hybridization was used to breed more plant vigor and flowers that had no dark blocks or lines. These clear pansies without a face were bred about the turn of the 20th century. Credit is given to a Scottish grower, Dr. Charles Stewart, for discovering the pansy with clear colors, no face.

Across the Atlantic, North American gardeners welcomed this newly bred flower. The pansy gained popularity rapidly. In an 1888 mail-order catalog, the pansy is described as "The most popular of all flowers grown from seed--our sales exceeding one hundred thousand packets a year." That's a lot of pansy seed, even in today's market.

In the last 50 years much of the innovative pansy breeding has been in Germany, the United States and Japan. New pansy colors such as shades of pink, rose or orange and unusual bicolor designs have expanded the variety of pansies available to gardeners in North America.

The diversity of pansies will flourish as pansy popularity continues to grow.

Information and Facts Varities There are many varieties and colours but all are derived from hybrids and mutations of one European species of pansy known as the Three Colour Viola.

The pansy’s leaves are green with serrated edges. The flowers have wide coloured petals which can be white, yellow, red or violet and many are sweet scented.

Pansies, grown together with petunias and begonias, create a spectacular display of colour in pots or hanging baskets in patios and on balconies.

Gardeners can choose pansy varieties based on the size of bloom and colour combination. The size of a pansy bloom will fall into three categories: Large-3 to 4 inches (9 to 11.5 cm.)

Medium-2 to 3 inches (6 to 9 cm.)

Multiflora-1 to 2 inches (4 to 6 cm.)

Large Accord series-Introduced in 1992, these pansies have large blooms on short sturdy stems. There are eight single colours, both faced and clear, and a mix.

Abundant blooms are produced on strong plants.

Lyric series-Freedom of bloom and weather tolerance are two qualities of the Lyric series. It is available in five colours, all faced, or in a mix. It was bred in 1985.

Majestic Giant series-This series has withstood the test of time. Majestic Giant Mix and Majestic Giant White Face were 1966 All-America Selections Winners.

The series has a free-flowering habit and stands up to heat and cold particularly well. There are six colours and a mix, all with faces.

Medallion series-The pansies in the Medallion series have extra large flowers in six colours, and a mixture. All have the pansy face.

Swiss Giants-Swiss Giant is an oldfashioned European pansy bred in Switzerland. The large flowers on long stems are good for cut flower bouquets.

Many of today's hybrid varieties were developed from Swiss Giants.

Medium Crown series- All clear colours, no faces adorn the nine colours and mixture of the Crown series. All are early flowering and bright spring colours.

Imperial series-A series prized for its non-fading colours and vigorous growth.

Most of the blooms are faced. A longstanding favourite of gardeners is imperial Blue, an All-American Selections Winner in 1975. There are unique colours in this series such as pink shades.

Joker series-The striking color combination of Jolly Joker garnered it an A.A.S. Award in 1990. This pansy is a velvety purple with orange face. The plant has a compact habit and may grow 8 inches wide.

Roc series-This unusual name has two meanings - Roc refers to V. x Wittrockiana, the pansy botanical species. Roc also refers to the rock solid garden performance.

Introduced in 1985, the Roc series contains nine colours with or without a face.

Springtime series-This series has a wide rainbow of 17 colours. The plants are heat and cold tolerant, resulting in a reliable performance.

Multiflora Crystal Bowl series -All are clear colours without a face. There are eleven colours in this series. The compact plants do not sprawl in the garden.

Maxim series-The fourteen Maxim colors have faced flowers that bloom prolifically on compact plants. One of the series, Maxim Marina, is an A.A.S. 1991 Bedding Plant Winner. Its unusual flower color is light blue with a dark blue face that is outlined in white. All Maxims heat and cold tolerance.

Universal series-These pansies have masses of early blooming flowers that may be clear colours or faced. There are 13 colors and a mixture. The plants have proven to be cold tolerant during southern winter conditions and heat tolerant in northern summers.

Fragrance Another quality of interest to gardeners is fragrance. Some pansies have a delicate perfume-like aroma. Once you have smelled and identified the pansy scent, it is unforgettable, but it is not always easy to perceive. Pansies seem to exude more fragrance at early morning and dusk.

To have fragrant pansies in your garden, grow or buy the most aromatic pansies. The yellow or blue pansy flowers seem to have the strongest scent. Second, you may wish to grow yellow or blue pansies in mass plantings or numerous plants in a patio container. The idea is to concentrate the bouquet of many plants in one area. Lastly, go in search of the fragrance. Lean down to the plants to encounter this subtle pansy aroma. This wonderful fragrance may be another reason that pansies continue to increase in popularity.

Bedding Plants Gardeners who seek instant colour in their garden will find packs and flats of pansies at their local nursery or garden centre. Select the flower colours that suit your garden design. Choose plants that are stocky with dark green foliage.

If there are just a few blooms but many buds, this is the right plant for your garden.

Planting Use the same procedure for planting bedding plants. Space the holes about six to ten inches apart.

If you have not added organic matter to your soil to boost fertility, now is the time to add fertilizer. A granular or time release fertilizer can be incorporated into the garden soil as you are planting the pansies. By adding a granular fertilizer now, food is easily provided for the plants' long term garden performance.

The final step is to water the newly planted pansies thoroughly. Moving the pansies from container to garden is a stress on the plants; it is crucial that they receive plenty of water during this adjustment period.

Diseases It is relatively easy to keep pansies free from damage caused by diseases and pests. Here a re a few of the more common problems that may be encountered.

Root rot-The first sign of root rot is yellow leaves. The plant then becomes stunted or dwarfed in stature.

Leaf spot-Leaves will develop spots of red, brown or yellow.

Mildew-Plants show white powdery deposits on leaf and stem surfaces. Plant leaves and stem may become stunted and brittle. Growing plants where they will receive adequate air circulation may prevent mildew.

The above diseases are best controlled by prevention.

Check plants frequently during wet or humid weather as this is often when the first sign of disease appears. Avoid overhead watering which keeps leaves wet, providing an environment in which the diseases can flourish.

Pests There are three pests which may harm pansies.

Aphids-These tiny soft bodied insects cluster on the growing tips of leaves and flower stems, sucking plant juices. The plants become stunted and deformed.

Spider Mites-These tiny insects also feed on plant juices.

Pansy leaves will turn yellow and eventually drop off.

Slugs-These worm-like creatures feed on plant leaves and stems, often at night.

Cabo de Gata l Park Natura

For all nature and bird lovers this is the place to be. A quiet natural park with miles of beach and unspoilt scenery, situated near the city of Almeria.

After a hectic time at Christmas you fancy getting away from it all and spending a few days in one of the most unspoilt areas of Spain, then the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, near the city of Almería is the ideal place to go. It is the largest terrestrial-maritime reserve in the European Western Mediterranean Sea, covering 460 km² including the town of Carboneras, the mountain range of Sierra de Cabo de Gata, and 120 km² of the sea as a part of a Marine reserve. The park offers lovely walks over rambling hills (great for burning off those extra pounds you gained at Christmas!), curious coves tucked away where you’d least expect to find them, long, empty windswept beaches, and white-washed villages which still are home to traditional fishermen and the odd hippy and artist too.

Being situated in Andalucia, the climate is warm most of the year, and the fact that it is one of the driest areas of Europe, means that rainfall is scarce most of the time. The average temperature is 18 °C and it has the lowest rainfall in the Iberian Peninsula and the whole Europe, its average precipitation being a mere 120 to 180 mm (4.72 to 7.09 in) annually. The area originally formed from volcanic eruptions, which have lead to some interesting scenery The park was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and in 2001 it was included among the Specially Protected Areas of Mediterranean Importance. Between the village of San Miguel and the Cabo de Gata point are salt flats (Las Salinas de Cabo de Gata) separated from the sea by a 400 m sand bar. Thousands of Greater Flamingos can be seen on the salt flats near the headland at certain times of the year.

Due to the harsh conditions for agriculture and its isolated location, habitation has been historically sparse, which has kept the area relatively virgin, something rather unlikely in the Spanish Costa. Three and a half thousand people were recorded as living within the boundaries in 1997.

The park is home to a multitude of wildlife, and is a favourite for birdwatchers. It is the ideal place for those who enjoy walking, as much of the coastline is only accessible on foot, via some well-marked footpaths and walks, especially between Cabo de Gata headland and San José and Las Negras and Agua Amarga.

There are a number of small hotels to stay at, mainly situated in the town of San Jose.

Cortijo El Sotillo is a rural hotel housed in an 18th-century farmhouse, just outside San José, with a swimming pool. Horse riding is available.

Hotel Atalaya has rooms with terraces located close to the beach in San José.

Hotel El Tío Kiko is in Agua Amarga and boasts jacuzzis and superb sea views in the rooms, a swimming pool and gym.

Camping Cabo de Gata is 1km from the beach in San Miguel de Cabo de Gata.

Open all year round, it has plenty of shade, mobile homes for rent and a swimming pool.

Camping Tau in San José is shady site 300m from the beach, with rooms to rent, a restaurant and bikes for hire.

Open Easter to the end of October.

Camping Los Escullos is a

shady, attractive site with a pool, close to the beach south of La Isleta.

5 Things You Think Work But Actually Don’t!

Most people are well aware of the placebo effect as it pertains to medicine. The idea is that simply thinking that a treatment will cure your symptoms is sometimes enough to make that treatment take effect. For instance, a patient who thinks he’s taking parcetamol for a headache may see his headache go away even if he’s swallowing a sugar pill meant to look like a painkiller. The effect is powerful enough that control groups in scientific studies of a treatment’s effectiveness will be given a dummy treatment to control for the effect.

But the placebo effect is by no means limited to medicine. In our daily lives we constantly encounter situations where products or services don’t work as promised. Yet far from stomping off to complain to someone, we instead come away convinced that the button we were pressing was doing exactly what it said it would. If a button says it will close the elevator doors but doesn’t appear to have the desired effect, we still find a way to convince ourselves that it was doing what it said it would.

“Don't assume self-delusion is always wilful or conscious,” says David McRaney, author of You Are Not So Smart, a book about self-delusion. “We often engage in something called confabulation, which is basically making up a story we can believe in to explain away behaviour we don't understand… We are very good at pattern recognition, and whether or not we have the story correct as to what is causing the pattern, we naturally learn to associate cause and effect.”

In other words, if the button says it will close the elevator doors, and the elevator doors don’t close until we’ve been pushing it for 20 seconds, we still manage to convince ourselves that our actions brought about the outcome. It’s just like the guy who takes the sugar pill labelled “paracetamol” – when the headache goes away on its own after a couple of hours, he convinces himself that it was the pill that did the trick.

Here a few examples of how this phenomenon affects us on a daily basis.

The Elevator “Close Doors” Button

Let’s start with the most obvious example: That pesky “close doors” button on the elevator. It’s a fairly well-established fact that on most elevators it’s what essentially amounts to a dummy button.

But it’s not as if elevator manufacturers are installing an extra button just to give you an illusion of control. Indeed, McRaney says the button can be activated, but only by certain people.

“The close buttons don’t close the elevator doors in most elevators built in the United States since the Americans with Disabilities Act,” explains McRaney. “The button is there for workers and emergency personnel to use, and it only works with a key.”

Sure, they could put a sign on the panel explaining the situation to elevator riders, but as McRaney points out, it’s hard to justify the time and money it would take. And besides, we’d probably keep pressing it anyway, convinced that this time it will work.

“HD” TV We’re not suggesting that HD TVs aren’t really high-definition, though the various technical terminologies might make it hard to determine just how good the picture quality really is. But for some people, simply seeing the “HD” label on the TV is enough to convince them that the picture is better, even if they don’t have the proper connection or they’re not watching an HD channel. Simply being told that it’s an HD

picture is enough to convince them that the picture is better, and it isn’t until their grandkids come over and show them how to find the HD channels that they realize they’d been deluding themselves.

This isn’t just anecdotal, though. Dutch scientists conducted a study in 2009 in which 60 people were shown an identical video clip on identical TVs. However, half of them were told that the clip would be in high-definition, and the scientists even attached an extra-thick cable to the back of the TV to complete the charade. The control group was told to expect a normal DVD image.

Afterwards they were asked to describe the picture quality. You can imagine which group thought it was watching the nicer picture.

Of course, at this point HD TVs are ubiquitous enough that most people know when they’re seeing a high-definition picture or not.

Still, it’s a good reminder that an assurance that something is “high quality” doesn’t just make it more likely that you’ll buy the product – it may also subtly influence your enjoyment of it.

Walk Signal Buttons Many cities and towns have buttons at crosswalks that allow a pedestrian to speed up the arrival of a walk signal.

And in many places, they do exactly what they promise to do.

But not everywhere.

The City of New York admitted several years ago that most of the “push button, wait for walk signal” buttons were no longer active, having long ago been replaced by automated systems that keep all the lights on a set timer. That makes them placebo buttons just like the close door buttons on an elevator.

“Just as with the elevators, it would be expensive to replace or remove all of the non-functioning buttons or to inform the public through some sort of media campaign,” explains McRaney. “There is no obvious harm in letting the people in your town keep impotently jamming crosswalk buttons.”

And many people will keep pushing away – perhaps a holdover from a time when they remember the buttons working or perhaps because occasionally they’ll get lucky and the light will change right after they push.

Again, in many municipalities these buttons actually do work. In 2008, an investigation by Canada.com found that there weren’t any such placebo buttons in Victoria, Canada, though city officials admitted that the buttons varied in effectiveness.

Butt-Toning Shoes In the case of elevator and walk signal buttons, there’s no deliberate deception involved – technology just changed, and nobody bothered

to inform the people who were still pressing away in vain. But sometimes you have the classic case of a company making claims that it can’t back up.

Case in point: Reebok was just ordered by the Federal Trade Commission to pay $25 million in refunds for claiming that its “toning” shoes would strengthen and tone the thighs and butts of people who wore them. The FTC also banned the company from making similar claims in future advertisements.

The decision is a potential shot across the bow of other companies marketing similar shoes, whose rounded soles supposedly make your thigh and butt muscles do more work as you walk. Despite the big claims by companies like Reebok and Skechers, some experts are sceptical; USA Today last year quoted a professor of medicine who called such claims “utter nonsense” and suggested that their only effect could be to destabilize the Achilles tendon.

Despite these doubters, many customers are quite pleased with their purchase. In a statement responding to the FTC decision, a Reebok spokesman insisted that the company had received “overwhelmingly enthusiastic feedback from thousands of EasyTone customers.” And while that’s probably a bit of corporate over-exaggeration, we don’t doubt that many customers did indeed come away feeling like the shoes had improved their butt. Maybe the shoes really did the trick.

Or maybe they just thought it did.

Office Thermostats We hate to break it to you, but big companies aren’t just going to let a chilly employee crank the heat up whenever he or she pleases. But if they simply locked the thermostat or put the controls out of reach, the employees would constantly complain.

The solution: A thermostat that doesn’t actually do anything but placate the chilly masses.

“In many offices the controls on the wall don't do anything,” says McRaney. “Some bosses and landlords feel like they can't trust people not to fiddle with the temperature all day and thus cost them money, so they install dummy thermostats which give people the illusion of control. They work really well, as most people fool themselves into believing they feel the change.”

When pressed, most technicians tasked with installing the devices admit that they’re merely window dressing. A 2003 investigation by The Wall Street Journal quoted one HVAC technician who estimated that 90% of office thermostats were completely fake (though other technicians gave lower estimates).

We haven’t seen any study confirming that people feel warmer after fiddling with these props. But let’s be honest: If they didn’t work, offices wouldn’t bother installing them.

Making the decision to get a dog should not be taken lightly. Dog owners need to be prepared to feed, train, exercise, groom, and interact with their dogs, and get them medical care when needed. Although smaller dogs tend to live longer than larger ones, many dogs of all sizes can live into their teens. Anyone thinking of getting a dog should be prepared for a long-term, lifetime commitment. Sharing your life with a dog can be such a richly rewarding experience!

Puppies, Adult Dogs or Senior Dogs It's hard to resist puppies, with their round pink bellies and oversized paws. Watching a happy, playful puppy is sure to bring a smile to any dog lover's face. Puppies, however, need a great deal of time and attention. They're babies: they need to be housetrained, taught good manners, protected against common diseases until their immune systems develop... and along the way, expect a few accidents in the house and some chew marks. Puppies, of course, can also be a lot of fun to raise if you have the time and the patience. Adopting a young puppy means that you start with a "fresh slate" - you won't have to deal with any bad habits or issues that may have developed with an adult dog from a previous home. Plus you get to watch them grow up from a squirming little fuzzball into a beautiful adult dog.

Adult dogs, however, make excellent pets uand are often passed over in favor of cute puppies (remember, puppies will eventually grow into dogs too!). With a full grown dog you see exactly what you're getting: you know how big the dog's going to be and what it looks like as an adult. A puppy with a fluffy little coat is adorable, but you could be in for more work than you bargained for if the dog matures into a 70-lb adult with a long thick coat that needs daily brushing.

Adult dogs also have a better attention span, which makes training easier than trying to get the attention of a squirming puppy. If the dog has had a previous home it may already be housetrained and even obedience trained. Adult dogs are over the "chewing phase" too and are less likely to chew something inappropriate.

When choosing a dog, consider:

Time commitment. Puppies are generally much more work than an adult dog. High-energy dogs of any size will need more time put aside for exercise. Long-haired dogs need regular grooming. Figure out how much time you are willing to put into pet care before deciding on a dog.

Activity level. Every dog needs fresh air and exercise, but some need much more exercise than others! Households that enjoy being outdoors hiking, walking, swimming, and just generally being active, may prefer to get dog that is mixed with breeds like a Golden Retriever, Australian Shepherd, or any of the active breeds. Lower-energy households should consider dogs with lower exercise needs to avoid situations where the dog gets bored and develops a greater risk for behaviour problems.

Grooming. Dogs need to be brushed to keep their coats healthy and free of mats. However, long-haired breeds need regular, if not daily, brushing which is a big time commitment. Grooming also includes trim-

Travel. Going on vacation means figuring out what to do with the dog.

Some dogs have temperaments that are well suited for travel while others don't. And although there are many pet-friendly hotels and other accommodations that allow you to bring your pet, many of them only allow small pets. Other options to consider are boarding your pet or hiring a pet-sitter. Travel might be a minor point if you only go on vacation once a year, but if you are a more frequent traveller it's wise to take it into consideration.

Finances. Generally speaking, it costs more to raise a puppy, or care for a large dog or an older dog.

Family members. The other members of your family need to be considered when you choose a pet. Kids are a major consideration. Sometimes people want to get small dogs or puppies for their kids, believing that small dogs are easier to manage and that puppies and kids can "grow up together". Actually, small dogs and puppies are more fragile and young children's lack of coordination can injure them. Small dogs are also not necessarily easier to handle than large breeds - many small breeds are extremely high-energy! Larger, sturdier, and calmer adult dogs are often a Household pets. This Christmas more and more of us will have received smart phones; the number of smart phone users has increased by 80 per cent over the past year and with the falling prices of this type of technology more and more of us are receiving one as a Christmas gift.

What do I mean by smart phones? Well I am talking about phones that allow you to send emails, browse the Internet, take pictures, listen to music, and navigate using built in GPS, they have the ability to extend their functionality through the use of “apps” – oh and they can also be used to make and receive telephone calls!

It’s the use of apps that we are going to focus on this month and in particular the use of apps to help us get or stay fit – given that it’s the New Year!

Those of you that know me will also know that I am not exactly the sporty type, too many days sitting in front of a computer screen and a keen adversity of anything healthy has put paid to the “racing snake” figure that Mr Wogan so often uses to describe himself. However, recently my lovely wife and I bought some splendid bikes from the nice people at Cycological

Given my aversion to exercise, I decided that the best way to motivate myself to use my nice new bike would be to find some technology that would help me take my mind off of the agony of exercise ;-) I have recently upgraded my iphone so I decided to put my old one to use as a high tech cycle computer, its built in GPS made it perfect for the job, so I bought a bracket that would mount my phone to the bike securely and then I set about looking for an app that would suit the purpose and quickly found RunKeeper – www.runkeeper.com – this app uses the screen on your smart phone to display useful information like the total distance travelled, the current pace, time taken and the depressingly small amount of calories burned. The app also allows you to take pictures along the way and it

automatically plots a map of the route you have taken so that it can be displayed, map style, when you have finished your route. RunKeeper also allows you to select a playlist of songs so that you can have your favourite music blasting away whilst you are “enjoying” the exercise.

Once completed your phone automatically uploads the pitiful (well it was in my case) attempt at exercise to your online RunKeeper profile, plotting a map of the route together with pace, speed and elevation information. RunKeeper is designed to track a variety of activities not just Cycling, it can track Running, Hiking and even downhill skiing but I don’t think there will be many doing that around here!

You’ve got Dear Kirkcaldy High School , God bless you for the beautiful radio I won at your recent Senior Citizens luncheon. I am 87 years old and live at the Raith home for the Aged. All of my family has passed away so I am all alone. I want to thank you for the kindness you have shown to a forgotten old lady.

My roommate is 95 and has always had her own radio; but, she would never let me listen to it. She said it belonged to her long dead husband, and understandably, wanted to keep it safe.

The other day her radio fell off the nightstand and broke into a dozen pieces. It was awful and she was in tears.

One sunny afternoon out of nowhere, appeared the fairy godmother. Cinderella said, "Fairy Godmother, what are you doing here after all these years"?

Instantly her rocking chair turned into solid gold Cinderella said, "Ooh, thank you, Fairy Godmother".

The fairy godmother replied "it is the least that I can do. What do you want for your second wish?"

Cinderella looked down at her frail body, and said, "I wish I were young and full of the beauty and youth I once had."

My name is Alice Smith and I was sitting in the waiting room for my first appointment with a new dentist. I noticed his dental diploma, which bore his full name.

returned. Cinderella felt stirrings inside of her that had been dormant for years.

And then the fairy godmother spoke once more: "You have one more wish; what shall it be?"

Cinderella looks over to the frightened cat in the corner and says, "I wish for you to transform Bob, my old cat, into a kind and handsome young man.

Magically, Bob suddenly underwent so fundamental a change in his biological make-up that, when he stood before her, he was a man so beautiful the likes of him neither she nor the world had ever seen.

The fairy godmother said, "Congratulations, Cinderella, enjoy your new life. With a blazing shock of bright blue electricity, the fairy godmother was gone as suddenly as she appeared.For a few eerie moments, Bob and Cinderella looked into each other's eyes. Cinderella sat, breathless, gazing at the most beautiful, stunningly perfect man she had ever seen.

Then Bob walked over to Cinderella, who sat transfixed in her rocking chair, & held her close in his young muscular arms. He leaned in close, blowing her golden hair with his warm breath as he whispered..........

"Bet you're sorry you neutered me."

A man escapes from prison where he has been for 15 years. He breaks into a house to look for money and guns and finds a young couple in bed.

He orders the guy out of bed and ties him to a chair, while tying the girl to the bed he gets on top of her, kisses her neck, then gets up and goes into the bathroom. While he's in there, the husband tells his wife: "Listen, this guy's an escaped convict, look at his clothes!

He probably spent lots of time in jail and hasn't seen a woman in years. I saw how he kissed your neck." If he wants sex, don't resist, don't complain, do whatever he tells you. Satisfy him no matter how much he nauseates you. This guy is probably very dangerous. If he gets angry, he'll kill us. Be strong, honey. I love you."

To which his wife responds: "He wasn't kissing my neck.

He was whispering in my ear. He told me he was gay, thought you were cute, and asked me if we had any Vaseline. I told him it was in the bathroom. Be strong honey. I love you too!!”

A cop pulls over a card for speeding. As he's writing out the man's ticket, the cop notices a penguin in the passenger seat. He pauses, looks over at the driver, and asks him, "Excuse me, but is that a real penguin?"

The driver responds, "Why yes it is; it's pretty cool you noticed."

"Well, I know it's none of my business, but why not take it to the zoo?", the cop asks. The driver answers, "Hey, yeah! That's a great idea! Thank you, Officer."

At which point, the cop finishes writing up the man's ticket and wishes him a nice day and a good luck.

A week later, the same cop pulls over the same driver. Before he even has a chance to start writing out the ticket, he notices a penguin in the passenger seat. He turns to the driver and asks, "Umm, sir. Tell me, is that the same penguin as last time?"

The driver responds, "Oh, hey, it's you! Yeah, it is, why?"

"Well", the cop began, "weren't you going to take it to the zoo?"

So the driver answers, "Yeah, we had a great time! And now we're on our way to an ice hockey game."
