s n o ra b ti a le r y e a C D ’s k ic s S t. P a tr k’ Synonymous with green beer and "Kiss Me I'm Irish" t-shirts worldwide, St. Patrick's Day was originally founded as a religious holiday honoring Ireland's patron saint. St. Patrick is known for converting many of the Emerald Isle's citizens to Christianity in the 400s. After his death, Irishmen established an annual holiday on March 17th marked by church service and prayer to honour his life. Over the centuries, Irishmen migrated to far corners of the world spreading their culture. Soon, St. Patrick's Day became an internationally celebrated holiday. Today, however, the holiday focuses less on religion and more on food, drink, and festivities. Additionally, the holiday is not only celebrated by Irishmen, but by people from a multitude of ethnic backgrounds looking for a fun time. As cities across the world plan their St. Patrick's Day celebrations, each interprets the holiday a bit differently. St. Patrick's Day in the United States The St. Patrick's Day we know was widely shaped by American adaptations of the holiday. In fact, citizens of Ireland have even modeled their celebrations after those seen in America. This Americanized view of St. Patrick's Day typically includes parades, libations, fare, and decorations themed around leprechauns, pots of gold, and shamrocks. Some of the United States' most notable St. Patrick's Day celebrations take place in cities teeming with descendants of Irish immigrants. Boston, New York City, and Chicago were major hubs for Irishmen during the potato famine of the mid-1800s. On March 17 each year, many citizens - Irish or otherwise - take part in the merriment. All three cities hold large parades. Chicago sets itself apart by coloring the Chicago River green through a process of vegetable dyes. In a nod to tradition, St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City offers a mass in honor of their namesake. Smaller towns in the United States show their Irish pride on St. Patrick's Day. The town of O'Neill, Nebraska claims to be the state's Irish capital. The town's main intersection displays the world's largest shamrock which has been painted on the pavement. Each year, their weekend-long festivities feature a running race called the Shamrock Fun Run and a children's story time reading of Dr. Seuss's Green Eggs and Ham. St. Patrick's Day in Europe Dubliners have embraced the Americanized version of St. Patrick's Day and celebrate the holiday through a five-day festival featuring a parade, comedy shows, and carnival rides. They have made the celebration about more than entertainment, however, and hold events focusing on their history and culture. In honor of their patron Saint, the town offers the In the Footsteps of Saint Patrick Walking Tour which takes participants to the

ancient sites and churches of the city. Other storytelling events highlight important figures in Ireland's past. The Irish have always maintained ties with continental Europe through trade, religion, and emigration. Not surprisingly, Ireland's European neighbors celebrate the holiday as well. Barcelona, Spain hosts an annual regatta in honor of St. Patrick's Day. Each year, participants race their boats by day and party by night. Bands playing Irish music and Celtic dancers are regulars at the event, all taking place on Spanish soil. Copenhagen, Denmark also holds a sporting competition on St. Patrick's Day - a three-legged race with 700 participants. Racers don't simply dash to a finish line, however; they visit Irish pubs along the way consuming at least half a pint of beer at each location. Proceeds of the event support three charities; one Danish, one Irish, and one international. St. Patrick's Day in the Pacific Rim Irish pride has even spread to the Pacific Rim. Japan's St. Patrick's Day celebration is held in the country's holiest city, Ise. Each year, 500 or more participants gather at the Ise Shrine to begin the St. Patrick's Day parade. Japanese children are costumed as leprechauns and adults dress up like St. Patrick and play bagpipes. During this parade, the Japanese and the Irish flag wave in tandem. In Australia, people claiming Irish heritage form the second-largest ancestral group. The Irish-Australian community aids in planning an eightday celebration surrounding St. Patrick's Day in Brisbane. Events include The Irish Radio Program, which features the latest Irish music and news. A family sports day with a Tug of War competition is also offered.

The Origins of Irish Coffee The story goes that Irish coffee was invented by Limerick chef Joseph Sheridan in 1942 to welcome Americans visiting Ireland. Travellers were arriving in the west of Ireland on a cold winter night, so Sheridan added whiskey to their coffee to warm them up, telling the Americans they were being served Irish coffee. It’s said also that the airport, a precursor to Shannon International Airport, attracted its share of celebrities with Cary Grant, Che Guevara, Marilyn Monroe and her then husband Arthur Miller having been photographed sipping an Irish Coffee. A San Francisco Chronicle travel writer, Stanton Delaplane, brought the recipe back to the U.S. after drinking Irish coffee at Shannon Airport. It was first served at the Buena Vista Café in San Francisco on November 10, 1952. In the years since, the Buena Vista has served over 32 million Irish Coffees and still whips up an average of 2,000 per day. The "Original Recipe" The original recipe as per Joseph Sheridan: "Cream as rich as an Irish brogue; coffee as strong as a friendly hand; sugar sweet as the tongue of a rogue; and whiskey smooth as the wit of the land." ...and in practical terms here’s how to make one: Pre-heat a clear stemmed glass with very hot water. Empty the water, and add 2 teaspoons of brown sugar. Now add some freshly brewed rich coffee and stir. As soon as the sugar is melted, add a generous measure of Irish whiskey (about 4 to 6 teaspoons). Stir again, and then wait for the brew to still. Now take a hot teaspoon and pour gently whipped fresh cream slowly over the back of the spoon. The cream should be not too stiff and not too liquid. A perfect Irish Coffee should look pretty much like that other famous Irish drink - Guinness! And remember never stir it because the coffee is meant to be enjoyed as you sip the warm, sweet nectar through the luxurious cream.

Enjoy

Legal Jargon

made simple

Spanish Income Tax Who has to make a Spanish tax declaration? With very few exceptions, anyone resident in Spain for tax purposes and with any income or capital gains anywhere in the world has to file a tax return. Non-resident property owners are also obliged to file tax returns

- Income from employment and/or pensions - Gains and losses from assets disposed of or purchased, such as property, businesses and shares - Investment income such as dividends and interest - Rents received

What are the exceptions? In the first year of your tax residency as a retired person there are no exceptions, even if you have no income you must file a declaration to that effect. Subsequently if your income from all sources is less than €8.000 you can normally avoid having to file but there are other conditions, e.g. no more than €1.600 of investment income and €1.000 of rental income. If you are an employee earning less than €22.000 and have no other sources of income, you may not have to file a return (tax will already have been deducted from your salary). Finally if you receive a pension from abroad that has already been taxed then you may be exempt depending on the terms of the tax treaty between Spain and the relevant country.

What deductions are available? There are many and varied credits and exemptions but the main ones are: • Tax deducted at source in Spain (e.g. “retenciones” deducted by banks on interest or by employers on salaries), and abroad if there is a tax treaty in force • Payments into the Social Security system • Calculation of rental income and capital gains on property sales • Pension contributions (subject to limits) • The first €1.500 of dividend income is tax exempt • Housing deductions (costs of buying, renovating or extending your main residence, and/or mortgage interest paid) • Donations to charity (must be registered and official charity; you should get a certificate from them showing your donation)

When do I become tax resident? The short answer is that living longer than 183 days in Spain (including occasional trips out of the country) during any one calendar year makes you tax resident, but so too can basing your family and/or business interests in Spain even if you yourself are absent. Note that failing to declare that you are resident for tax purposes does not alter the fact that you are in fact tax resident and liable to be taxed accordingly. Do not confuse obtaining a Spanish residency certificate with tax residency; this shows you are on the register of foreigners kept by the Police and does not equate to tax residency, although the tax authorities may see it as evidence that you are tax resident if it is ever a matter of dispute. When do I file a return? You should register your tax resident status with the Spanish tax authorities (Agencia Tributaria) as soon as you become tax resident. Theoretically this is as soon as you are settled with the intention of staying more than 183 days but certainly after this period is up. There is a simple declaration called Modelo 30 which you complete, sign and take to your local tax office. If you want Pro Business Support or another tax adviser to do this for you, this is the time to ask them. The first return will be made during May or June of the year following the first year of tax residency. What gets taxed? Worldwide income and capital gains. So for the declarations residents are making in May/June 2014 they will need to include, from the 2013 calendar year:

When is it due? The declaration must be filed by the 30th June during the year following the relevant tax year. So in 2014, tax declarations can be filed in May and June, for the calendar year of 2013. What if I don’t pay? Failure to pay tax can result in penalties of between 50% and 150% of the tax owed, plus interest. Late payment can result in penalties between 5% to 20% of the tax involved, plus interest. What should I do if I am behind with my taxes? If you think you should have been registered to pay tax in Spain or are registered but are late with your returns, then contact us for some advice. Depending on the situation you could be able to put things right quite easily and cheaply and it will certainly be better to take the initiative yourself than wait for the tax authorities to come to you. Note that there is a statute of limitations of four years after which unpaid taxes cannot be collected by the Agencia Tributaria (unless they have already made a claim for the tax). We operate a free query service (email info@jjtrustsl.com) if you are unsure of what to do in your current situation; or alternatively you can call our offices on 966 923 963 to arrange a no obligation consultation appointment.

Easy ways to improve your pet's quality of life Pet ownership is more than just a privilege - it is a responsibility. While pet owners spend ample time and money purchasing elaborate outfits, accessories and toys for their pets, what truly matters is when owners take the initiative to install healthy habits and routines that enhance their pets' lives.

Across Europe, veterinarians have witnessed a decline in annual vet visits, resulting in increased rates of preventable diseases in both cats and dogs. By committing your pet to a healthy routine, you can do your part to ensure they live the happiest, longest life possible. If you want the best for your pet, forget the chevron-striped collar this year and instead focus on these simple tips:

S c h edu l e A nn u al Check u ps No one knows your pet as well as you do, but veterinarians are trained to detect diseases before they become costly issues for both you and your pet. Make it a habit to schedule an annual check-up for your pet every year, using your pet's birthday or adoption date as a reminder. There is no better gift you can give to your pet than a long, healthy life and annual checkups are an easy way to ensure your pet is receiving preventive care on a regular basis.

Commit yourself and your pet to a consistent exercise routine. Only have 10 minutes to take Spot to the park? That's OK too. Small intervals of exercise each day can make a world of difference longterm.

O ff er Lo v e An d Affect io n Anyone who has loved a pet can testify to the relationship's emotional benefits. The warm welcome you receive at the front door after a long day at work, the wagging tail you hear as you prepare your pet's dinner and the head nestled in your lap each night as you watch the news are only some of the rewards of being a dog owner. It is important to reciprocate this love even in small ways, such as a quick scratch behind the ears or tossing a tennis ball around the back yard. Caring for your pet with enduring love and affection will bring you happiness and help enhance your morale daily.

P r o v id e A P roper Diet You love your pet and your pet loves treats, but feeding your pet an excessive amount of food and spoiling them with treats can lead to rapid weight gain. If you are not sure how much you should be feeding your pet, consult your veterinarian. Simple dietary swap-outs can help your pet maintain a healthy weight and decrease the chances of developing health complications.

E xerc is e R EGU LA RL Y It seems like a simple thing to remember. However, busy schedules and daily stresses often cause people to either forget to exercise their pet or move it to the bottom of the to-do list.

Hands-on with the 3Doodler It's been almost a year since the 3Doodler debuted, raising a whopping US$2.3 million in the process, and since then we've been curious to see just exactly what a "3D drawing pen" can do. Luckily, WobbleWorks was more than happy to show off its new sketching tool and let us try it out. In short, it's fun and easy to pick up, but don't expect to craft anything too elaborate on your first try.

multi-colored glue gun. The 3Doodler's main purpose is to just be creative, which should be evident from the word "doodle" in the name. Honestly, it is more fun than you expect. It only takes a couple of minutes to blow through an entire stick of ABS plastic just making little squiggles on paper and in the air. It's clear that building something more elaborate requires practice and patience, since the only people who seemed capable of putting anything decent together with the 3Doodler were the very people who had designed it in the first place.

The way the pen works is simple. First you fit a 3 mm piece of ABS or PLA plastic filament at the top, which heats up near the tip. Then you press one of the two buttons on the side to control how fast the partially-melted plastic flows out of the nozzle. It sounds easy enough, but as with any new tool, mastering it appears to take quite a bit of practice. Sketching 2D images on paper with the 3Doodler can be tricky. The plastic dries in about a second, so if you move at the wrong pace or lift the pen for even a moment, it will trail out disproportionately, and you'll have to correct it. I imagine it's much easier once you're accustomed to how the 3Doodler works, but you felt like a preschooler trying to use watercolors for the first time. Where the 3Doodler really shines though is when you begin to sketch upwards, right off the table. After sticking one end of the filament to a piece of paper, you just held down the button and slowly move you hand upwards, forming little swirls as you go. It is strange to watch the plastic follow right along with the movements. Imagine doodling a line drawing on paper, then setting the paper down only to find your doodle still hovering in mid-air in front of you. Of course, with the 3Doodler, you have to ensure there's a proper support structure keeping it upright, but the concept is quite similar. The pen may have a few practical applications as almost a

Gastric Balloon Pill who have previously failed to lose weight through diet and exercise.

A BMI of 25 or above is considered as being overweight (30 or above is considered as being obese).

Most of the UK media has got rather overexcited about the UK launch of Obalon, a gastric balloon in pill form that can be swallowed to help overweight people achieve rapid weight loss without invasive surgery. The Obalon pills are designed to be inflated into balloons in the stomach, reducing the free volume of the stomach and therefore how much a person can eat before they feel full.

How does the Obalon balloon get into the stomach? If you opted for this treatment, you would have to swallow the capsule (reportedly the size of a large vitamin pill), with a very small tube attached. Once the capsule reaches the stomach, it opens up and releases the balloon. The doctor looks at where the balloon is placed with an X-ray and then inflates the balloon with gas through the tube (it is not clear what type of gas is used). After the balloon is inflated, the tube is removed, leaving the balloon in the stomach. According to the manufacturer, the procedure takes about 15 minutes and no sedation or

Obalon has been approved in Europe for overweight and obese adults, but in the UK is currently only available privately. It is designed to be used for a maximum period of three months.

time as developing healthier eating habits. To achieve lasting weight loss, the person would need to stick to these healthier habits after any balloons are removed.

Are there any risks or side effects from Obalon balloon treatment? Obalon has conducted a study of the balloon in 119 obese patients, mainly women, who initially received a single balloon. In the study, about one in 10 patients reported nausea, 6.7% reported vomiting and 7.6% requested early removal of the balloons. No serious complications were reported. However, doctors are advised to closely monitor patients undergoing the procedure during the entire 12 weeks, to detect possible complications. Because the Obalon balloon is so new, it is currently difficult to assess how safe it is compared with other similar types of weight loss treatment. An endoscopy is the procedure used to remove the balloon.

But as a course of three balloons can cost up to £4,000, is this new treatment a good option? What is the Obalon balloon device and how does it work? The device is made by a company also called Obalon. It comprises three lightweight balloons that are placed in the stomach over a 12-week period. The number of balloons used can be tailored to the person’s weight loss progress, with a single balloon placed in the stomach initially and additional balloons added if needed. Who is the Obalon balloon suitable for? The balloon is designed to be used by people with a body mass index (BMI) of 27 or above,

anaesthetic is needed. A special diet is followed for three days afterwards, consisting of clear liquids only on day one and soft foods only on day two with most people able to eat solid foods on day three. A second balloon can be introduced 30 days after the first and a third, 30 days after that, depending on a person’s progress. Twelve weeks after the first balloon is swallowed, all balloons are removed using an endoscope. Light sedation may be required for this procedure, which takes about 15-30 minutes. How is the Obalon balloon designed to be used? The balloon is designed to be used at the same

The product is not suitable for people with certain conditions such as disorders of the gastro-oesophageal tract and type 1 diabetes or for women who are, or plan to become, pregnant, or are breastfeeding. An urgent safety notice, issued by the UK medical devices regulator the MHRA last September, advised that Obalon inflation systems such as the balloon should not be used at elevations higher than 660 metres above sea level. Lower air pressure at such altitudes will result in overinflation of the balloon. This height equates to just over twice the height of the famous Shard tower in London, but is less than the height of many of the larger hills and mountains across the UK including Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Scafell Pike.

tars SWho Died Before Their Time March 2014

John Belushi Born: John Adam Belushi January 24, 1949, Humboldt Park, Chicago, Illinois, U.S. Died: March 5, 1982 (aged 33) Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, U.S. Cause of death: Acute cocaine and heroin intoxication Resting place: Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts

The son of an Albanian immigrant restaurant owner, Adam Belushi, and his vivacious wife, Agnes, who was also of Albanian descent, John Belushi was born in Chicago, Illinois, USA, on January 24, 1949. He grew up in Wheaton, where the family moved when he was six. Though a young hellion in grade school, John became the perfect all-American boy during his high school years where he was co-captain of the Wheaton Central High School football team and was elected homecoming king his senior year. He also developed an interest in acting and appeared in the high school variety show. Encouraged by his drama teacher, John decided to put aside his plans to become a football coach to pursue a career in acting. In 1973, John was hired as a writer for the syndicated National Lampoon's Radio Hour which became the National Lampoon Show in 1975. John's big break came that same year when he joined the ground-breaking TV variety series Saturday Night Live (1975) which made him a star. The unpredictable, aggressively physical style of humor that he began on "Second City" flowered on SNL. In 1978, while still working on Saturday Night Live (1975), John appeared in the movie Goin' South (1978) which starred and was directed by Jack Nicholson. It was here that director John Landis noticed John and decided to cast him in his movie National Lampoon's Animal House (1978). John's minor role as the notorious, beer-swilling "Bluto" made it a box-office smash and the year's top grossing comedy. Despite appearing in only a dozen scenes, John's performance stole the movie, which portrays college fraternity shenanigans at a small college set in the year 1962.

John's love for blues and soul music inspired the "Blues Brothers". He and Aykroyd first appeared as Joliet Jake and Elwood Blues, a pair of white soul men dressed in black suits, skinny ties, fedora hats and Rayban sunglasses, as a warm-up act before the telecasts of Saturday Night Live (1975). Building on the success of their acts and the release of their album "A Briefcase Full of Blues", John and Dan Aykroyd starred in the movie, which gave John a chance to act with his favorite musical heroes including Ray Charles, James Brown and Aretha Franklin. Although John's reputation for being an off-screen party animal is legendary, his generous side is less well known. Using some of his money, he bought his father a ranch outside San Diego for him to live. John helped set up some of his Chicago friends with their own businesses and even financially helped his younger brother, James Belushi, who followed his older brother's path to both "Second City" and Saturday Night Live. In January 1982, John began work on the screenplay for another movie to be titled "Noble Rot". Also, John had checked into a bungalow at the Chateau Marmont, a popular celebrity hotel in Los Angeles. John's drug use had been steadily increasing for over a year now, which alarmed his wife and friends, but he continued to promise Judy that he would quit someday. On March 5, 1982, John Belushi was found dead in his hotel room at the age of 33. The local coroner gave the cause of death as a lethal injection of cocaine and heroin. Several years later, John's drug dealing/drug user companion during his final weeks, Cathy Smith, was tried and sentenced to three years in prison for supplying John with the drugs. Close friend James Taylor sang "That Lonesome Road" at a memorial service at Martha's Vineyard cemetery where John was buried.

March 2014

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU’RE IRISH You think England is the place your condemned to if you're bad. It’s March, and aside from St. David’s day on the 1st, most will quickly fast forward to March 17th, St. Patrick’s day when you will only find two kinds of people: those that are Irish and those that wish they were.

You think Dublin is the world capital. You think a sober Irishman is friendless -- or broke -- or dead.

If you are in two minds about whether you are Irish, or have Irish roots or not, the following might serve as a clue to if you have the right to wear the green and drink Guinness with the best of them.

You give an empty Bushmills bottle a wake.

You Might Be An Irishman If...

You see leprechauns after the pub closes -- always twins.

You drink beer from a longneck bottle because your doctor told you to distance yourself from alcohol.

The guard says "How many fingers am I holding up?" and you say "All of 'em."

You think tea is most useful as a tint for an aquarium.

You think the two-step dance is a result of eating Mexican food.

You know what St. Stephen's Day is.

You think St. Patrick's Day is THE major holiday of the year. You think singing songs in a strange dialect is a God-given right. You believe God created Ireland and the rest happened by accident.

You think a street light pole is a prosthetic device to help you stand up. You think that New Year's resolutions are fine -- for that night! You think God gave the Irish whisky to keep them from taking over the world. You believe that:

You think a hangover is just the morning blues.

All harps have a soul

You think water is only for fish -- and bathing (occasionally)

All music is Irish -- originally God has a sense of humour

You think God gave the Israelites Guinness in the wilderness.

A twelve-step meeting is where you find two pubs next door to each other

You think all beautiful women are Irish. You think the Celtics are a ceilidh band.

God invented Guinness bottles with small openings to keep the Irish from falling in and drowning

You think Boston is in Ireland.

The last song of the evening is the end of the world

You think Scotch-Irish is a mixed drink.

All jokes are funny -- after 10 pm

You think the restroom is a place to sleep.

During your youth much of your food was boiled.

You think lite beer is a punishment.

You're strangely poetic after a few beers.

You think whiskey punch is a sporting event at the pub.

You don't know the words but that doesn't stop you from singing.

You think a deaf and dumb, tall, statuesque sex goddess that owns a brewery is the perfect mate.

You can't wait for the other guy to stop talking so you can start talking. You have no idea how to make a long story short.

You think the blind staggers is a good substitute for jogging.

'For the craic' is the best reason for doing anything.

You think a liquid diet is to consume nothing but poteen.

Saying 'Now we're sucking diesel' means that you are happy with the outcome of the situation.

You think English is a foreign language.

You can say "Any craic' to a policeman and you won't get arrested.

This month we have a collection of tasty St. Patrick’s Day inspired recipies

Irish Stew

Dublin Coddle

Ingredients 1 tbsp sunflower oil 200g smoked bacon, in chunks 900g stewing lamb, in chunks 5 medium onions, sliced 5 carrots, sliced into chunks 3 bay leaves small bunch thyme 100g pearl barley 850ml lamb stock 6 medium potatoes, in chunks small knob of butter 3 spring onions, finely sliced Method 1.Heat oven to 160C/fan 140C/gas 3. Heat the oil in a casserole dish. Sizzle the bacon for 4 mins until crisp. Turn up the heat, then cook the lamb for 6 mins until brown. Remove the meats with a slotted spoon. Add the onions, carrots and herbs to the pan, then cook for about 5 mins until softened. Return the meat to the pan, stir in the pearl barley, pour over the stock, then bring to a simmer.

Ingredients 2 kg potatoes 2 large onions, sliced thickly 450g good quality pork sausages 450g bacon, piece thick cut 500 ml water 1 beef or 1 chicken stock cube 3-4 tablespoons fresh parsley salt & Pepper to season

2.Sit the chunks of potato on top of the stew, cover, then braise in the oven, undisturbed, for about 1½ hrs until the potatoes are soft and the meat is tender. The stew can now be chilled and kept in the fridge for 2 days, then reheated in a low oven or on top of the stove. Remove from the oven, dot the potatoes with butter, scatter with the spring onions and serve scooped straight from the dish.

Soda Bread Ingredients 170g/6oz self-raising wholemeal flour 170g/6oz plain flour ½ tsp salt ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda 290ml/½ pint buttermilk Method 1.Preheat the oven to 400F/200C/Gas 6. 2.Tip the flours, salt and bicarbonate of soda into a large mixing bowl and stir.3.Make a well in the centre and pour in the buttermilk, mixing quickly with a large fork to form a soft dough. (Depending upon the absorbency of the flour, you may need to add a little milk if the

dough seems too stiff but it should not be too wet or sticky.) 4.Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead briefly.5.Form into a round and flatten the dough slightly before placing on a lightly floured baking sheet.6.Cut a cross on the top and bake for about 30 minutes or until the loaf sounds hollow when tapped. Cool on a wire rack.

Method 1.Cut the potatoes into three or four pieces: leave smaller ones whole. Finely chop the parsley. Boil the water and in it dissolve the stock cube. 2.Grill the sausages and bacon. Chop the bacon and sausages into one-inch pieces. 3.Preheat the oven to 300F / 150°C In a large flameproof heavy pot with a tight lid, start layering the ingredients: onions, bacon, sausages or sausage pieces, potatoes. Season each layer liberally

with fresh-ground pepper and the chopped fresh parsley. Continue until the ingredients are used up. Pour the stock mixture over the top. On the stove, bring the liquid to a boil. Radio Caroline

March 2014

The little ship that changed the world of radio The world of popular radio changed for ever on Easter Saturday, 28th March 1964, when Pirate Radio Station Radio Caroline broadcast its first show. She would remain on air until 3rd March 1968 when the British and Dutch Governments finally closed her down. During the 60′s, the British government made it their business to keep radio play of pop music to a minimum. It was an unfortunate case of the government, in form of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), giving the people what they thought the people should want to hear, rather than what they actually wanted. Although a few other European stations, such as Radio Luxemburg played some pop music that could be heard in the UK, mainly during the evening, it was not until the advent of Pirate Radio that the music scene in the UK would change forever. Very quickly, the Radio Caroline community along with the other pirate radio listeners, developed a huge following, brought together through playing the music they loved and by sticking it. During the 1960′s, it was clear that British teenagers were being deprived of radio’s attention. At that time in Europe, the radio was being financed by public radio programs provided by state monopolies. BBC radio stations of the time were said to be choc’ full of “speeches, lectures, gardening tips and cookery suggestions, but all that was soon to change. Irish musician manager and businessman Ronan O’Rahilly founded Radio Caroline. O'Rahilly failed to obtain airplay on Radio Luxembourg for Georgie Fame's records because its airtime was committed to sponsored programmes promoting the major record labels; EMI, Decca, Pye and Philips. Encouraged by the presence of the Scandinavian and Dutch pirates, Ronan O'Rahilly raised the capital to purchase a suitable vessel. In February 1964, O'Rahilly obtained the 702-ton former Danish passenger ferry, Fredericia, which was converted into a radio ship at the Irish port of Greenore, owned by O'Rahilly's father. At the

same time, Allan Crawford's Project Atlanta organisation was equipping the MV Mi Amigo at Greenore, where the two competed to be first on air. Financial backing for the venture came from six investors, including Jocelyn Stevens of Queen magazine, with which Radio Caroline shared its first office. O'Rahilly named the station after Caroline Kennedy, daughter of U.S. President John F. Kennedy. On a fund-raising trip to the US, O'Rahilly reportedly saw a Life Magazine photograph of Kennedy and his children in the Oval Office that served as the inspiration for the name "Caroline Radio". In an extant photo, Caroline Kennedy and her brother, John F. Kennedy Jr., are apparently dancing in the oval office as their father looks on, an activity, which O'Rahilly reportedly interpreted as a playful disruption of government At noon on Easter Sunday 1964, The Rolling Stones record ‘Not Fade Away’ was first played on Radio Caroline, thus shattering the monopolies of the BBC and changing UK radio forever. Radio Caroline would provide an underground of pop and rock n’roll for much of Western Europe. In terms of those who lived on these UK pirate radio ships, there were essentially three groups: the DJs, radio technicians and the ship’s crew. Of course the station’s success was most dependent on the DJs, who would mix together in an atmosphere of happy musical bliss. Pirate DJs were casual, relaxed and said whatever came into their head as a record began. That’s where the phrase “disc jockey” comes from: some one who rides the record. Radio Caroline's first programme, broadcast on 28 March 1964, was presented by Chris Moore. Over the early years, DJs as they were then known included Tony Blackburn, Tom Lodge, Ray Teret, Roger Day, Simon Dee, Tony Prince, Spangles Muldoon, Keith Skues, Johnnie Walker, Robbie Dale, Dave Lee Travis, Tommy Vance, Tony Prince, Bob Stewart and Andy Archer. Some

March 2014 DJs from the USA and Commonwealth countries, such as Graham Webb, Tom Lodge, Emperor Rosko, Steve Young, Keith Hampshire, Colin Nicol and Norman St John, were also made their names on Caroline. BBC Radio 2 newsreader Colin Berry and Classic FM's Nick Bailey started their careers reading the news on Radio Caroline South. According to that source of all ‘knowledge’, Wikipedia, so you know it must be true: the Fredericia was renamed MV Caroline and was anchored off Felixstowe, where it began test transmissions on Friday, 27 March 1964. On Saturday, 28 March, it began regular programming at noon on 197 metres (1520 kHz, announced as 199 metres) with the official opening being conducted by Simon Dee. Chris Moore hosted the first programme, which was pre-recorded. Radio Caroline's first musical theme was Jimmy McGriff's "Round Midnight", a jazz standard co-composed by Thelonious Monk. In March 1964, Birmingham band The Fortunes recorded the song Caroline, which later became the station's theme song. Round Midnight was confined to close down on Radio Caroline North after The World Tomorrow programme. The station's slogan was ‘Your all-day music station’. Radio Caroline announced a wavelength of 199 metres, rhyming with the station's name, but was actually on 197.3 metres (1520 kHz). Radio Caroline's power was almost 20 kW, achieved by linking two 10 kW Continental Electronics transmitters together. Broadcasting hours were between 6 am and 6 pm to avoid competition from Radio Luxembourg. After its 6 pm close-down, the station returned to the air at 8 pm and continued until after midnight. This was to avoid direct competition with popular television programmes, mainly the early days of the soap opera. Most of Radio Caroline's pop music programmes were aimed at housewives. Later, children were targeted. Without serious competition, Radio Caroline quickly gained a daytime audience of several million listeners. In mid-September 1965, the crew and DJs on MV Mi Amigo were joined for the weekend by 1960s pop singer Sylvan Whittingham, who visited the ship to promote her single "We Don't Belong". Wittingham was unable to leave on the tender when a storm arose. The only singer to stay overnight, she helped present programmes, make jingles, and close the station down at night. Former DJ Tom Edwards said: “We were given free rein, playing the records that defined the times but were rarely heard on the BBC; Small Faces, The Kinks, The Who, Reg’s group The Fortunes and Motown stars such as The Supremes and Martha Reeves”. Caroline stayed on air until August 14, 1967, when Radio Caroline made its departure from the air as a result of the government’s Marine Broadcasting Offences Act. The backlash was immediately felt in Downing Street where furious London fans rioted and for some hours chaos reigned. It would return to the airwaves but finally ceased transmissions on March 3rd, 1968. The result of the likes of Caroline, Radio London, Radio Veronica and others was that the BBC, once the enemy of everything that pirate DJs stood for, decided that they would join the party and former Caroline DJ Tony Blackburn became the first DJ on the new Radio One, to be followed by the likes of other pirate DJs such as Simon Dee, Tony Prince, Johnnie Walker, Dave Lee Travis, Tommy Vance, Tony Prince, Bob Stewart and Emperor Rosko, to name but a few.

Action | Biography | Drama Critics Reviews Blu-ray.com: “There’s an incredible story of tenacity buried somewhere in “Lone Survivor,” but it’s difficult to embrace the searing aspects of the tale when director Peter Berg (fresh off the 2012 flop, “Battleship”) insists on turning the effort into an action movie, wrapped in the American flag. The true-life tale of Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell and his astonishing fight out of an Afghanistan war zone, “Lone Survivor” doesn’t need much ornamentation to explore the heat of the moment when processed by an elite military unit.”

Critics Reviews io9.com: “The backstory is different enough that this could have been (and should have been) a sequel. I like what I see but there simply was no reason to reboot a film that did not suffer for writing, direction, budget or talent. His mechanical detachment from his past life, and the gradual resurfacing of his memories was a poignant moment in the film, not to mention a social examination; when science and technology progress, how much of our humanity do we leave behind. ”

Upgrading Your AVG Software… Sounds obvious really doesn’t it, but I have recently visited a number of customers who didn’t realise that this process wasn’t automatic, so I thought I would write about it this month and just highlight the pitfalls and what you should do / expect when paying for the AVG anti-virus product. As many of you know AVG have a free product that is available to download and use to protect your computer from nasty’s however every year they release a new free version and although it’s not mandatory it’s a good thing to update to the latest version to stay protected – and its free so why wouldn’t you? However some people choose to upgrade to the even better paid for service from AVG. This paid for version of their software has a number of additional advantages - it has a built in firewall, it has an

online shield that will protect you from downloads from the Internet, if you download email to your computer it also has a built in anti-spam filter for that. None of these added options are available in the free version of course. The point is, if you decide to upgrade to the version with better protection, you need to go through a process to upgrade

1. Visit the website https://myaccount.avg.com/ca-en/my-account-login 2. Click on “Create an AVG MyAccount” button 3. Enter the email address that you used when you paid for the upgrade and choose a password 4. You will be redirected to a page from where you will be able to download your upgraded software together with the licence key you paid for, just following the instructions from there to install the soft-

You’ve got to be joking

A father passing by his son's bedroom was astonished to see the bed was nicely made and everything was picked up. Then, he saw an envelope, propped up prominently on the pillow. It was addressed, 'Dad'. With the worst premonition, he opened the envelope and read the letter, with trembling hands. Dear, Dad. It is with great regret and sorrow that I'm writing you. I had to elope with my new girlfriend, because I wanted to avoid a scene with Mum and you. I've been finding real passion with Stacy. She is so nice, but I knew you would not approve of her because of all her piercing's, tattoos, her tight Motorcycle clothes, and because she is so much older than I am. But it's not only the passion, Dad. She's pregnant. Stacy said that we will be very happy. She owns a trailer in the woods, and has a stack of firewood for the whole winter. We share a dream of having many more children. Stacy has opened my eyes to the fact that marijuana doesn't really hurt anyone. We'll be growing it for ourselves and trading it with the other people in the commune for all the cocaine and ecstasy we want. In the meantime, we'll pray that science will find a cure for AIDS so that Stacy can get better. She sure The Apple store in deserves it! Central London was broken into last night.
