I bet you’ve done it…I know I, and many others have, but nobody wants to admit to it. Sneaking around, hoping none of our friends will see us but really, we can’t help it – the reward is often too good to ignore the opportunity. What am I on about? ‘Binning’ that’s what, and if you don’t know what ‘binning’ is well, you’re missing out my friend. ‘Binning’ is the name given to spotting something you like that’s been dropped off at the local bins and going and getting it for yourself. If you did this in the UK, I can guarantee you’d be excommunicated from the WI or blackballed from the golf club committee but here in Spain its ok…so long as no one knows. You see, the Spanish have this great concept of not destroying everything that they no longer need or want and if it’s in reasonable condition (depends, of course on how you define ‘reasonable’) they’ll leave it next to the bins (rather than in it) for someone else to make use of. I know numerous ex-pats who go ‘binning’, one who even watches from her flat with binoculars so she can get there first, but none are prepared to ‘come out’ about it. I’m the first to admit that I’ve found some great furniture that someone else has just grown tired of, and even displayed quite well when leaving it at the ‘bin supermarket’. Two friends who came out a long time ago in one respect found a complete, and in perfect condition, lounge suite and promptly furnished their apartment – but they won’t say a word about it. The ‘moros’ have been at it for years, and making a few quid on the side, and now the good ol’ ex-pat is catching on to this environmentally friendly,

Apart from the odd fly past and roosting at night, he was conspicuous by his absence. He appeared to not have the instinct to do his share of rearing the chick. What this meant was

that the female was spending long periods of time away from the nest looking for food, which is ok for a while, but she will tire quickly as she has to feed herself as well. If the other egg hatches, it will be impossible for her to keep up. I watched the male one day eat a Red Legged Partridge without going anywhere near the nest. In June 2009, we will be having elections to choose new members of the European Parlament. We will be remembering the very first European Parlament which was on the 19th March 1958 and called the European Parlamentary Assembly. As I have just said, in June we will have the European elections, and will choose by direct vote in our national electoral district new representatives of the 27 European States for the period 2009 - 2014. These representatives are able to speak up to 23 official languages. This makes me think of Gran Alacant where we can meet different nationalities from the European Union, living together and pulling together for the good of the area without being impeded by language. It is nice to be able to enjoy and share with all of you without differences and to be able to bring the good things from each nationality into the area. The open meeting where all the decisions are made is held in Strasbourg with the help of commissioners who prepare the work as a team. It is important legislatively that the European Parliament and the European Council work together making the major decisions together - decisions like free circuation for workers, the European Market, education, investigation, the environment, the transeuropean networks, health, culture or the protection of consummers amongst other things. Parliament shares out the Cabinet annually to approve European Community budgets. It is for this reason that I believe that the new political groups would intensify citizen participation. The process of integration within Europe will be more successful if they resolutely tackle the real worries that we, the European Citizens have, by deleloping participation and implementing political truths of Community integration in matters such as the creation of work for those suffering unemployment, the fight against poverty, protecting areas of environmental value, training and education, equality and the social cohesion between the member states of the European Union. In order to stand up to these challenges, it is necessary for us European Citizens to be more active and commited and that we make the European policitical institutes, each time, more democratic and useful to everyone in general. I believe that the best thing is to do this together and for the good of us all. It is a pleasure to be able to say this to you all, and as always, if you need anything, I will be there for you all.

What a month it’s been with more visitors to GA, it’s always nice to see more people on the street and in the bars and restaurants. After hearing about all the closures while I was away it was good to see Tutti’s open in what was La Palma and Don and Anne have opened Phoenix Nights in the Carabasi complex in what was Sam’s Bar. On Saturday the 18th of April the Royal British Legion held its first meeting in GA at Destinations bar. A full house with a superb meal and some wonderful prizes donated by the businesses of Gran Alacant for the auction which raised 150€. Everyone said it was a great night and that they were looking forward to the next! The total raised on the night was 660€. The next morning, somehow, we held the walk along Carabasi beach – in the pouring rain. I was going to cancel it but more than 40 people turned up and were ready to go! Even some of the fellas managed to look good in their bras… thanks to Destinations Bar for providing the water and Amanda from Sandcastle photography for the photos, at the time of writing I have now got 1,720€ with still more to come and I’ll give you an updated total next month as to how much we’ve raised so far for Elche Hospital.

Frankie’s Bar I’ve had a long chat with Frankie about the rumoured stripper at his bar last year. He was upset at what has been said about his bar and insisted that he runs a clean bar and does not let anything like that occur on his premises. We agreed it would be a good idea to show people just how friendly and welcoming Frankie’s Bar is and we’ve decided to hold The Jungle Drums annual party there on the 21st of May. The thing is – I’ve ambushed it because it’s my birthday so come on down and help me celebrate – everyone’s welcome and there are special offers on drinks for the night. Dear friends, Once again I have some very good news for the people of Gran Alacant. First of all, I would like to let you know that we have received a subsidy from the Valencian Government of a total amount of 6.284.145 € to be invested in our town through different projects. Our major has decided that a very large part of this amount of money will be for Gran Alacant area and some projects that will be developed in our area in the following two years. These future projects will be: 1. - New location for the street market of Gran Alacant. We want to move it from Calle Canarias (that is a public street and it sometimes bothers the neighbourhood of this street so we want to move it to a public land where it will not bother anybody). The new street market of Gran Alacant will be located close to the Sports Hall Centre area and it will be constructed as a multiuse area for different activities when the street market is not working. This will cost 520.501,27 €. 2 .- Rehabilitation of the pavements and the area that are between the roundabout of the post office going to the beach area. This will cost 229.189,25 €. 3. - Clean and fit out the Santa Pola Hill and the environment. This will cost 309.154,72 €. 4. - The second phase of the closing and improvement of the Sports Hall Centre. This will cost 577.655,98 €. This means that Gran Alacant will have a total amount of 1.636.501,22 € of the subsidy our Town Hall has received from the Valencian Government. This amount of money together with the amount of money from the subsidy we already received by the Central Government makes that the final amount of money for Gran Alacant will be around four millions euros in projects that will be developed soon in the area. I would like to take this opportunity that I have to let you know that I will have all the projects in my office and that it will be a great pleasure for me to be able to explain them to you if you are interested in having more information about what we are going to do exactly in the area of Gran Alacant. It has been very hard to obtain all these investments for our area, but our mayor and I have decided to make a very big difference in Gran Alacant and try to make a better place to live with more services and infrastructure. LaMarina MAS DESPACHIO, POR FAVOR ! STILL AT IT By John McGregor If you don’t know what the first bit above means, then you : a. Can’t be arsed to learn Spanish. b. Are bothering to learn, but you havn’t got that far yet. c. Want to find out…if so, read on.. Mas despachio, por favor actually means ‘slower, please’, or generally used as ‘can you speak a bit more slowly please ? ’( I might get it if you didn’t speak so fast ! ). Thing is…have you had a go, or is it just point a) that applies to you ? If you have, then you know it’s not that easy, is it ? I know, because I’m not that thick ( honest ), but I’ve been at it ten years, on and off, and I’ve still got loads to go before I consider myself able to say ‘Hablo espanol’ ( I speak Spanish ) with any conviction. Here are one or two of my experiences trying to learn the lingo… When I first bought a place here, I needed some building work done. Nothing too fancy, some slabs and a few steps at the back for a small patio. Everyone around seemed to use and recommend the same bloke, called Harry, a surly Londoner, on the grounds that he was cheap, but definitely not cheerful. We agreed the price and I said I would come with him in his heap of a car to the builders yard to buy the materials needed. In a self-inflicted cloud of dust we swept into the very small Spanish builders yard ( before Cano’s got big and expanded ). Harry abruptly ‘parked’ his filthy ancient ( English ) saloon car right in the middle of several pallets of materials where several fork lift trucks were moving jerkily around us. Harry jumped out and grabbed a bag of cement from a nearby pallet, tossed it casually into his boot, loudly uttering the immortal words to the nearby watching hefe – ‘ Uno sacko of cemento ! ‘He swung round to observe me, helplessly crying with barelysuppressed laughter, leaning against his car for support. ‘ What ‘re you pissing yourself about ? ‘ he demanded. I managed to gasp out ‘ Learn

Spanish with Harry - lesson one – at the builders yard – Harry’s tip ‘ if in doubt, use the English word, and put an ‘o’ on the end – Uno sacko of cemento !’ I couldn’t resist it, and I continued – ‘Don’t tell me, I know the next bit…Uno saco of sando ?’ Harry was not the sort of bloke you took the piss out of, not if you wanted to go on living. He stared coldly at me, belligerently insisting ‘well, it ‘effing well is, innit - uno saco of cemento !’. Well, of course, he was right, the laugh was on me really, it is uno sacko of cemento….. but the meeting of Spanish and English made my day.

Local groups must go elsewhere and pay! New shops, bars and restaurants who don’t know there’s a recession on continue to open, bless ‘em...and then close! There’s a few green shoots around though, like builders building, painters painting etc between the rain, but they always do around Easter, don’t they, so I don’t think it’s a pointer to the economy. I’ll keep my ear to the ground, if there’s any ‘ hold the front page’ news, I’ll let you know…
