And, just when you thought it couldn’t get any more terrifying, we bring you a truly heart-stopping – or at least stomach-churning – piece about poo collecting in China. Yep, everything you ever wanted to know about what happens to all that excrement produced by the most populous nation on the planet. You read it here first!

If that doesn’t completely frazzle your nerves, read our review of the scariest films of all time. Why do people love to be scared to death? Dr Who is about my limit!

So, as All Hallows Night approaches, I know where I’ll be – safely locked in the house with the lights on and the shutters down. But it’s not the ghoulies and ghosties, and long-legged beasties, and things that go bump in the night that I want protecting from – it’s all those kids hyped up on sugary sweets trick-or-treating. Now that’s truly terrifying.

Give me Freddy Krueger any day.

A LACK OF SEX WILL COST YOU! Beware if the mood has left the marriage, well at least in France! A judge has ruled that a 51-year-old man must pay his 47-year-old ex-wife damages for failing to fulfil her sexual needs. He has been ordered to pay 10,000 euros to compensate for “lack of sex over 21 years marriage”. He was fined under section 215 of France’s civil code, which says married couples agree to a “shared a communal life”. The ruling comes two years after a judge deemed the man solely responsible for the couple’s divorce because of his refusal to have sex with his wife.

A father in California was arrested for throwing his crying seven-year-old son into the water from a sightseeing cruise boat.

The man was on the cruise with his girlfriend and two sons from a previous marriage. He began arguing with his girlfriend and the boy, and the boy started to cry. His dad gave him a few corrective smacks, told him he needed to toughen up, then hurled him into the water five feet below.

One nutty woman now has an arm-y of Facebook friends The social network fan has had all her online pals’ profile pics tattooed on her limb.She filmed herself getting the 152 prints and posted the clip on YouTube. The unnamed Dutch woman, who goes by the username susyj87, said: “Pretty amazing, right? I’m really proud of it. Hope you like it.”

But one YouTube user posted: “What if someone changes their profile pic?” And let’s hope she doesn’t fall out with anyone.

SOMETHING TO SNOUT ABOUT A sow has given birth to a piglet with a difference on a farm in China. The little squealer was born with not one, but two snouts. The rest of the porkies in the litter have the regular number of snouts, so the piglet has a big advantage at feeding times as he can eat with both his mouths. His owners say he is otherwise normal.

Farmer Li Zhenjun and his wife Yu Wanfen named the piglet Xiaobao, Babe in English, after the movie about the extraordinary piglet that wanted to be a sheepdog.

STOP SNAKING AROUND A St Petersburg, Florida man got the shock of his life when he lifted the lid on his toilet and found a snake curled inside, with its head sticking out of the bowl!

The slippery serpent turned out to be a six-foot African rock python.

But, it could have been worse, as the snake was just a baby. African rock pythons grow to 20 feet or even longer.

The man called his boss and told him he’d be late because he’d had to wrestle a snake out of his toilet.

His boss joked he would need a better excuse than that, so the man brought the snake into work with him.

You don't get to use an excuse like that every day!

Hispanic Day (Día de la Hispanidad), or National Day (Fiesta Nacional de España), is an annual national public holiday in Spain. It marks the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas in 1492.

What do people do?

Background

Hispanic Day is traditionally a time for national pride and a celebration of Spain’s military. After raising the Spanish flag in the centre of Madrid, the king is joined by top brass and service personnel from all branches of Spain’s armed forces for a parade through the city.

An impressive array of military vehicles trundle the streets as, overhead, Air Force planes perform aerobatics while streaming yellow and red smoke trails to represent the Spanish flag. The events are broadcast live by radio, internet and television news services.

Away from Madrid, Hispanic Day is a day off work and an opportunity for family and friends to get together. People in the Aragon region, north-east Spain, also commemorate Our Lady of the Pillar, their patron saint, on this day.

According to the Julian calendar, Christopher Columbus set sail from the port of Palos de la Frontera in South-West Spain on August 3, 1492.

He landed on an island that is now part of the Bahamas in the Caribbean on October 12, 1492.

The anniversary of this date is now, of course, Hispanic Day in Spain but the day is also marked throughout the Americas, where it either celebrates the arrival of Columbus or marks the resistance of indigenous peoples.

In the Bahamas it is known as Discovery Day, in Costa Rice as Day of the Cultures, and in Argentina, Chile and Mexico as Day of the Race, while for the Venezuelans it is Day of Indigenous Resistance.

The second Monday of October is Columbus Day in the United States.

Public life As Hispanic Day is a national public holiday, things are generally quiet. Many businesses and other organisations are closed, although some bakers and food stores may be open. Public transport services generally run to a reduced schedule, and there may be no services in rural areas.

Scary Halloween Recipes Bat Wings with Swamp Dip Ingredients 20 chicken wings (3 1/2 pounds) 1/2 cup soy sauce 2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger or 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper 1 teaspoon five spice powder 2 cloves garlic, minced 8 ounce container of dairy sour cream 4 tablespoons of ground mustard Fresh chives Bat Wings: Place wings in a plastic bag set in a shallow dish. In a small bowl stir together soy sauce, ginger, crushed red pepper, five spice powder and garlic. Pour over wings. Close bag and toss to coat.

Chill in refrigerator several hours or overnight, turning bag occasionally.

Remove wings from bag, reserving marinade. Place wings on a foil-lined baking pan. Bake, uncovered, in a 450°F (230°C) oven for 10 minutes. Brush with reserved marinade (discard remaining marinade). Bake 15 to 20 minutes longer or until chicken is tender and no longer pink.

Swamp Dip: In a small bowl stir together an 8-ounce container of dairy sour cream and 3 tablespoons coarse ground mustard. Garnish with fresh whole chives. Serve with bat wings.

pizza mummies Ingredients Pizza Mummies 4 English muffins Pizza sauce Black olives Quarter Red or green pepper Cheese sticks or slices

Heat the oven to 350º F. For each mummy, spread a tablespoon of pizza sauce onto half of an English muffin (toast it first, if you like).

Set olive slices in place for eyes and add round slices of red or green pepper for pupils.

Lay strips of cheese (we used a pulled-apart cheese stick) across the muffin for the mummys wrappings.

Bake for about 10 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the muffin is toasty.

Monster Toes Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Cut a wedge into the end of each cocktail wiener to make a toenail.

Cut the tortillas into strips about 4 inches long and 3/4 inch wide. Discard the ends.

Soften the strips in the microwave between damp paper towels for 10 to 30 seconds.

Roll each wiener in a tortilla strip and secure with a toothpick.

Bake for 7 to 8 minutes. Remove them from the oven, then fill the toenail with ketchup or mustard. Remove the toothpicks before serving

left over pumpkin Recipes Pumpkin Cake Ingredients For Cake 300g self-raising flour 300g light muscovado sugar 3 tsp mixed spice 2 tsp bicarbonate of soda 175g sultanas ½ tsp salt 4 eggs , beaten 200g butter , melted zest 1 orange 1 tbsp orange juice 500g (peeled weight) pumpkin or butternut squash flesh, grated

For Drenching and Frosting 200g pack soft cheese 85g butter, softened 100g icing sugar, sifted zest 1 orange and juice of half

Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Butter and line a 30 x 20cm baking or small roasting tin with baking parchment.

Put the flour, sugar, spice, bicarbonate of soda, sultanas and salt into a large bowl and stir to combine. Beat the eggs into the melted butter, stir in the orange zest and juice, then mix with the dry ingredients till combined. Stir in the pumpkin.

Pour the batter into the tin and bake for 30 mins, or until golden and springy to the touch. To make the frosting, beat together the

cheese, butter, icing sugar, orange zest and 1 tsp of the juice till smooth and creamy, then set aside in the fridge.

When the cake is done, cool for 5 mins then turn it onto a cooling rack. Prick it all over with a skewer and drizzle with the rest of the orange juice while still warm. Leave to cool completely.

Give the frosting a quick beat to loosen, then, using a palette knife, spread over the top of the cake in peaks and swirls. Will keep, covered, for up to 3 days in the fridge.

Pumpkin and Coriander Soup Quarter the pumpkin, remove the seeds (don’t discard them, they are lovely when roasted and make a great nibble). Cut the red peppers in half, remove the seeds and place them with the pumpkin onto a roasting tray. Drizzle the flesh with a little olive oil and place into a pre heated oven set at gas mark 6/200C/400F and roast for about 40 minutes.

Remove from the oven. Scrape the flesh from the skin of the pumpkin and place to one side along with the roasted pepper.

Heat a little olive oil in a saucepan; add the chopped onion, crushed garlic, juniper seeds, celery and red chillies. Cook for a few minutes until the onions and celery are soft. Add the pumpkin and red peppers, the stock and finally the chopped coriander. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat and allow to simmer for 15 minutes. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and then process

Ingredients 1 small pumpkin 2 red peppers 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, crushed ½ teaspoon juniper seeds 100g celery, chopped 2 chopped small red chillies 1 litre vegetable or chicken stock Large bunch of fresh coriander, chopped Salt and peppercorns

Pumpkin lasagne Heat the olive oil in a roasting dish, add the pumpkin flesh and season with the cayenne, paprika, nutmeg and a little salt and freshly ground black pepper. Add the fresh rosemary, place into a pre heated oven set at gas mark 6/200C/400F and cook for an hour until the flesh is tender.

Add the ricotta cheese and mix through, remove from the heat and leave to infuse.

Make a white sauce by melting the butter, adding the flour and mixing

together. Cook gently over a low heat and slowly add the milk, stirring to ensure that the sauce is smooth. Season.

Cover the base of an ovenproof dish with a little of the sauce, add a layer of the lasagne and top with the pumpkin mixture.

Repeat with another layer of each and top with the parmesan cheese.

Bake in the oven for about 10 minutes until the top is golden brown

Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg Salt Ground black pepper Fresh rosemary 225g ricotta cheese 50g butter 50g flour 350ml milk 250g fresh raw lasagne 35g freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Is red wine the elixir of life? Or, is a diet of tofu and mackerel the key to eternal youth?

Do you need to sleep more or keep active if you want to be a real-life Peter Pan? A quick look at some of the oldest people on the planet offers a few answers…

So, you want to live to 100.

Well, congratulations, you’ve already made one important change that should help you add a year or two to your life tally – you moved to Spain. (If you’re on holiday and reading this, you might want to cancel your return flight.)

The latest UN figures reveal

people in Spain live longer than those in the UK; 79 for men and 85 for women. In the UK it’s 78 and 82. But, adding that bit extra by moving to Spain is not going to get you a telegram from the Queen, so if you’re serious about living past 100 you’d better read on and learn some tricks from some real old timers.

IN Sardinia, particularly the small town of Ovodda, nonagenarians are everywhere and centenarians barely merit a second glance.

According to scientists one of the secrets of the Ovoddans longevity, and my favourite, is that they down a couple of glasses of red wine a day. Red wine contains heart-healthy flavonoids (no, no idea what they are either, but they’re good for you and that’s all you need to know). Sardinian wine is extra strong in these flavonoids, so buy Sardinian wine if you can. If not, don’t worry, the Spanish stuff is bound to help a bit, too.

There are a few other things scientists have noted about why the Ovoddans live so long that I’m not so keen on. Firstly, they never retire, just keep on working until they drop. Some consolation for future generations facing later retirement as countries sink into debt, perhaps, but what if you retired at 50! No need to panic, researchers think that it is the keeping active that is important rather than actually going to work. So get a dog, join the bowls club, or at least throw away the TV remote so you have to get up to change channels.

Unfortunately, the main reason for the Ovoddans long life doesn’t help us much; scientists say it is genetic and due to a faulty chromosome found in the people of this isolated community.

Some other Mediterranean’s defying the passage of time are the people of Ikaria Island in Greece.

These islanders attribute their long lives to two things – food and sleep. Just like the Spanish, the Ikarians love a nap after lunch. Uni-

versity of Athens researchers have found that these siestas can slash deaths from heart disease by 37%.

The Ikarians eat loads of oily fish, too, which is thought to help them live longer and also keeps them happy – depression is practically unheard of on Ikaria. Pass the pillow, it’s time for a tuna sandwich and forty winks.

In Okinawa, Japan, 70 really is the new 50, as the Okinawans actually age more slowly than the rest of us. Scientists think this has something to do with the hormone DHEA. This hormone decreases with age but in the Okinawans it decreases much more slowly.

Sounds great, how can I become Okinawan?

The scientists say it is all down to a diet rich in tofu, soya and a wide variety of fruit and vegetables. So, it’s off to the nearest allyou-can-eat wok buffet, then. Oh, hang on, the Okinawans restrict their diet, eating only until they are 80% full. Better go a-la-carte.

There is another theory about the Okinawans longevity; it may all be down to their love of a good chinwag. The ancient Japanese formed moais, or groups of four or five friends who loaned each other food or money. The Okinawans have kept this tradition going, but now it is just a social gathering.

This may help them live longer as recent studies have found that socially isolated adults are more

likely to die of heart disease and cancer than those with a better social life.

While junk food, obesity and highstress lifestyles are pushing the US down the longevity tables, there is one place where Americans are bucking the trend – Loma Linda, California. Loma Linda is home to many Seventh Day Adventists and one theory is that their healthy vegetarian diet and abstinence from smoking and drinking is what makes them live longer. But not all Seventh Day Adventists stick to these rules and, in Loma Linda, even the ones breaking the rules live well into old age. So, researchers point to other aspects of their lifestyle. Relaxing is very important for Seventh Day Adventists, who take their weekly day of rest extremely seriously. Taking time out, say researchers, helps alleviate stress – one of the biggest killers. Someone hand back the TV remote, I’m putting my feet up!

The social aspect of being part of a religious community could also help the Seventh Day Adventists live longer.

After learning all these secrets of how to live a longer life, I was left with two questions. Just how long would a Seventh-Day-Adventist Okinawan living in Ovodda, taking daily naps and eating salmon force fed on Sardinian red wine live?

And, perhaps more importantly, which of these secrets can I use in my own quest for immortality.

I’ve chosen drinking red wine while hanging out in moais and always ordering the fish option on the menú del día. And just to be sure, from now on I’m going to bathe in Lanjaron water as the people of Lanjaron, a spa town on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada, live longer than anyone else in Spain.

The best way to experience the town, the stunning surrounding countryside, and of course the wine, is to take The Wine Route. But, be warned, the route takes in some eight bodegas so you might want to pace yourself.

First stop on the route is the The Bullas Wine Museum, which is set in an impressive 19th century winery that once belonged to one of the richest and most influential wine growing families of the region. Wander through its vaulted cellars and learn how wine is made and how methods have changed since those first Bullas vines were planted by the men in sandals.

If things start getting a little too theoretical for your palate, head to one of the museum’s tasting rooms and try some of Bullas’s finest for yourself. Pick up some tips on judging the wine’s nose (smell) and what the legs (drops that run down the glass when you give it a good swirl) mean – who knew wine tasting involved so many body parts. Now you are an expert you can leave the safety of the museum and head out to the real wine world to put your new-found knowledge into practice. Nod wisely while proclaiming the wine has a bouquet of blackcurrants, an aftertaste of liquorice or a hint of burnt sausages. Declare with confidence that this is a fine example of a Monastrell – they nearly all are as this is the main grape grown in the region, so you’ll not go far wrong.

There are 22 stops on the route, not all bodegas but almost all with wine available, so you will probably not complete the route. If you do, you may not remember.

For stunning countryside and quality wines, visit Bodega Balcona, situated in the Aceniche valley. The valley has a microclimate that is perfect for growing grapes, and is surrounded by impressive mountains. The area has been designated a special protection area for birds.

Las Bodegas del Rosario, the largest producer in the area, is also worth a visit. It was the first cooperative in the town, founded in 1950, and brings together many growers.

Then there is El Carrascalejo, the oldest active winery in Bullas. Or, head for Bodega Molino y Lagares, one of the newest.

By now, all that wine will no doubt have left you desperate for a beer, so head to Bullas’s historic main square, Plaza de España, and find yourself a bar. You can’t completely escape the grape here as taking pride of place, among the square’s ornate buildings and close to the Baroque Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, is a bronze sculpture by Rafael Pi Belda, depicting grape treading. Apparently, it is meant as a tribute to everyone who has helped shape the culture of wine on earth – we’ll raise a glass to that.

For a spot of lunch, or evening meal and bed for the night, try the Molino de Abajo. This old flour mill on the banks of the Mula River has been converted into a first-class restaurant and hotel.

If this is all sounding like too much hard work and you need a drink just thinking about it, skip the wine route and head for the wine market instead. Here, you can taste and buy wines from many of Bullas’s bodegas all in the one place. The next wine market is on October 9.

After the Fight As the last drops of bull’s blood soak into the sands of Barcelona’s ancient bullring, Amanda Black asks what By Catalonia’s ban on bullfighting means for Spain and wonders if the capes of Catalonia really have Amanda Black swirled their last Depending on your point of view, Sunday September 27 was one of the saddest days in Catalonia’s history or one of the greatest.

For it was the day that Catalonians either lamented the end of 624 years of brave matador heroes fearlessly facing raging bulls, or celebrated the demise of a barbaric and medieval form of torture masquerading as sport, or even art.

In July, Catalonia became the first region in mainland Spain to ban bullfighting. And at the final fight of the season, before the ban comes into effect in January, it was left to local Barcelona boy Serafín Marín to deliver the death blow.

But as Marín thrust his sword into the last bull destined to shed its blood in the historic Monumental bullring in Barcelona, it was unclear who could really claim this final Olé, and just what it would mean for the future of bullfighting in Spain.

Certainly, the many anti-bullfighting campaigners who gathered outside the bullring to celebrate the end of an era of violence to animals were eager to pronounce a victory for animal rights. But bullfighting aficionados, and some political commentators, weren’t so sure.

Many say the ban is political and has nothing to do with animal welfare. Indeed, the cruel practice of correbous, where a bull with flaming torches attached to its horns is chased through the streets, remains legal in the region.

Catalan’s desire for independence and eagerness to distance itself from all things Spanish has been cited as the real motive behind the ban.

Marín is among those who believe this

is the case. “The parliament has prohibited bullfighting because it is a ‘Spanish fiesta’ – the ultimate symbol of Spanish nationalism,” he said in a recent interview.

So is the ban the first death throw for bullfighting in Spain, as animal rights campaigners hope, or is it merely political posturing?

Perhaps it doesn’t matter. Bullfighting could eventually die a natural death as Spaniards are falling out of love with the national pastime that has inspired artists and writers such as Goya and Hemmingway.

A recent survey in El Pais newspaper found that only 37% of Spaniards supported bullfighting, while 60% disliked the practice.

But, the 18,000 people packing the bullring for Barcelona’s last fight were definitely in favour. Tickets sold out within hours of their release, and later changed hands on the black market for ten times their face value.

This was, of course, in part due to the historic nature of the event and the fact that the most celebrated bullfighter of them all, José Tomás, joined Marín and Juan Mora to fight the final six bulls in Catalonia. Really, crowd numbers have been falling for decades.

Even so, the atmosphere at Catalonia’s last fight was jubilant and defiant as fans in the bullring chanted “Liberty”. Afterwards, Tomás was held aloft and carried back to his hotel by supporters, many of whom refused to believe this was the end for bullfighting in Catalonia. “We have a right to kill bulls,” they claimed.

And there are legal challenges to demand that this right is reinstated. The PP has filed an appeal claiming the Catalan legislation is unconstitutional,

while The Federation of Catalonia Bullfighting Organisations has organised a petition demanding cultural interest status for bullfighting in Catalonia.

The national government has already moved in this direction, with a royal decree published on August 31 recognising bullfighting as “an artistic discipline and a cultural product”. The change in status will reduce VAT on bullfighting from 18% to 8%, in line with other cultural activities.

There is clearly no political will nationally to follow Catalonia’s lead and ban the practice. France and the regions of Valencia, Madrid and Murcia, as well as many cities have added their own body blow to the abolition campaign, also giving the practice cultural status.

Yet, audience numbers continue to fall

and fewer fights are staged, giving hope to those who believe the practice bloodthirsty and barbaric. State TV broadcaster RTVE has stopped broadcasting fights, and the economic crisis is taking its own stab at paralysing bullfighting.

Few things are certain, but with the owner of La Monumental demanding millions in compensation over the ban and breeders from across Spain planning a class action to sue the Catalan government for denying them a means to earn a living, out of the ring at least the fight is far from over.

Welcome to this month’s computer ar cle wri en by Richard from BlueMoon Solu ons This month we return to the subject of backups. There are so many people that simply do not look a er their data properly and end up losing it because they just haven’t taken the me to back it up.

There are even more that “think” that they back up their data, however when it comes to the crunch their well‐laid plans fail because of an iden fiable flaw in their backup solu on.

We never really think too much about our backups un l that fateful day we need to rely on them to get our data back. Really we should test our backups on a regular basis to ensure that when we do need them we have some confidence that it’s going to be ok..

There are a number of backup programs out there that will help. There are even programs built into your op‐ era ng system, but all of these tend to take your data and back it up into a single file or a single set of files.

This means that when you want to get your data back, you first need to plug the data into your backup pro‐ gram and then rely on it to extract your actual data – I’ve never liked that. I always pre‐ fer, where possible, to make a copy of my data, so that it’s

the same in both the original loca on and the backed up loca on.

I know this all sounds very complicated, but it’s not re‐ ally,! Just think of it like this, ‐ if you don’t have your data (documents, pictures, favourites etc.) in two differ‐ ent physical loca ons then you don’t have it at all!

It’s no good backing up to an‐ other place on the same hard drive, because if that hard drive dies (as they tend to) then both sets of your data are gone. Although its be er to back up to another hard drive in the same computer, it won’t help if that computer is stolen as both sets of the data will be gone.

The point is that your two data sets should be in differ‐ ent physical loca ons, so the first is on your computer and perhaps the second is on a

memory s ck (if you don’t have much to back up) or on an external hard drive if you have more data.

Also remember that once you have done your backup you should move the external hard drive or USB s ck to somewhere else in the house (the safe perhaps?) or be er s ll somewhere else en rely different, because anyone coming in to steal your com‐ puter won’t bother leaving your external hard drive – if they take both then all your data is gone!

So, once we have decided how to store our backup, we can then look to use some so ware to help us make the job of copying it as easy as possible. When they get there, St Peter says, “We only have one rule here in heaven: Don't step on the ducks!”

So they enter heaven, and sure enough, there are ducks all over the place. It is almost impossible not to step on a duck, and although they try their best to avoid them, it is not long before the first woman accidentally steps on one.

Along comes St Peter with the ugliest man any of them had ever seen. St Peter chains the man to the woman who stepped on a duck and says, “Your punishment for stepping on a duck is to spend eternity chained to this ugly man!”

The next day, the second woman accidentally steps on a duck and along comes St Peter, who doesn't miss a thing.

With him is another extremely ugly man. He chains the man and woman together with the same admonishment as for the first woman.

The third woman has observed all this and, not wanting to be chained for all eternity to an ugly man, is very, VERY careful where she steps.

She manages to go months without stepping on any ducks, but one day St Peter comes up to her with the most handsome man she has ever laid eyes on... very tall, long eyelashes, muscular.

St Peter chains them together without saying a word.

The happy woman says, “I wonder what I did to deserve being chained to you for all of eternity?”

The guy says, “I don't know about you, but I stepped on a duck.”
