THE GUILT OF A MOTHER

Swiss woman has pled guilty to slitting her baby's throat at Torrevieja Hospital in January 2014, on the opening day of her trial at the Alicante Provincial Court in Elche. The plea came as part of a deal where she took 11 years behind bars, after prosecutors had initially called for a 17-year jail sentence on a count of homicide. The sentence was also reduced because it was accepted that she did suffer from a personality disorder. 44-year-old Katharina Katit-Staheli had disappeared from Zurich with baby Dylan Katit, who was ten months old, on Christmas Eve 2013, prompting authorities to put out a Europe-wide alert.

She did not believe in traditional medicine, and had kidnapped her son from a hospital where he was being treated for water on the brain. She had lost custody of the child because of his ongoing health needs and the fact she refused to allow him to be treated by the Swiss national medical service. Katit-Staheli's father, Othmar Stäheli, was arrested in Zürich for aiding and abetting, as he reportedly helped her smuggle the baby out of the city's hospital after the social services took him away from her, since she wanted to 'protect him from doctors. She then drove her father's car through several countries before arriving in Torrevieja.

do something about it immediately, though the Ombudsman had no legal power to force the council to do anything, after acting on complaints led by the Federación de Asociaciones de Vecinos de Orihuela Costa (FAOC). Orihuela council spokesman Rafael Almagro announced a package of measures this week, with a 300,000-euro tender to be advertised to improve playgrounds and green areas in areas like La Zenia, Cabo Roig, and La Florida. The Guardia Civil traced Ms Katit-Staheli to the Carrefour hypermarket next to the Habaneras Shopping Centre, after she was spotted by somebody who had recognised her photograph in the media. She was immediately taken to Torrevieja Hospital with her baby, because of the concerns about his

health, but she had a knife in the nappy bag that she carried for her son. Katit-Staheli then killed him, after being given permission to bathe the infant before doctors gave him a thorough medical examination. She then tried to take her own life by stabbing herself in the neck, and needed emergency surgery.

SORTING OUT THE COSTA

rihuela council is to counter criticism about the state of children’s play areas on the Orihuela Costa as well as the condition of local roads and pavements, by investing nearly 900 thousand euro in two major projects. The investment in the area had already previously been announced by the authority, but no specific plans had been declared. In September, the Valencian Ombudsman slammed the authority over the dangerous condition of playgrounds and green spaces on the Orihuela Costa. The authority was told to

Costa is also to be advertised, with Campoamor, Los Dolses, Villamartín, Playa Flamenca, La Zenia and La Florida amongst the areas to be covered. Almagro said:- “We are dealing with long-standing

complaints from Orihuela Costa residents that have been built up for some time, and this represents an important investment which will improve the lives of everyone that lives in the area.”

Ex-Catalunya president Carles Puigdemont and four former ministers were freed with conditions by an investigating judge in Belgium on Monday. The judge said they could not leave the country without permission and had to give details of their accommodation. They had handed themselves in to Belgian police following an EU arrest warrant issued by a Spanish judge. Puigdemont (pictured in the prosecutor’s office in Brussels) fled to Belgium after Madrid imposed direct rule on Catalunya following an independence declaration. He has said he will not return to Spain unless he is guaranteed a fair trial. The five are wanted in Spain to face charges including rebellion, sedition and misuse of public funds. They are now expected to appear in court in Belgium within 15 days. Belgium has a maximum of 60 days to return the five to Spain but, if they do not raise legal objections, a transfer could happen much sooner. Puigdemont's political party, PDeCAT, said he had

surrendered to police to show his "willingness not to flee from the judicial process but to defend himself in a fair and impartial process, which is possible in Belgium, and highly doubtful in Spain". A fortnight ago, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy imposed direct rule on Catalunya following a declaration of independence in the regional parliament. He sacked Puigdemont, dissolved the parliament and called regional elections for December 21st. The declaration of independence followed a referendum that the Spanish constitutional court had declared illegal. Puigdemont and four colleagues all handed themselves in to Belgian federal police, accompanied by their lawyers, on Sunday morning and were questioned in a hearing lasting 10 hours. Eight politicians are being held in Spain in an investigation into alleged rebellion and sedition linked to Catalunya's declaration of independence Another two activists are being detained in a separate investigation.

Against The Tide -A campaign earlier this year by Orihuela council to get foreign residents registered on the municipal padron has done little to reverse big falls in recent years, according to the latest projections from the National Statistics Institute (INE). Whilst a small handful of Alicante Province municipalities have produced increases in non-Spaniards on the padron, the INE says that Orihuela's padron register has shown a drop of 18 percent over the last four years, falling from over 91 thousand in 2013, through to a projected 75 thousand for this year. That's bad news for the Orihuela authority with padron numbers important for them in getting grants from the national government, with the falling

returns also being mirrored in recent years by neighbouring authorities like Torrevieja. The drop is due to either people not re-registering or simply leaving the country, or moving to another part of Spain. Orihuela's padron level is now down to what it was ten years ago, according to the INE, as numbers fall by over six and a half percent

over the last 12 months. In March, Orihuela councillors Noelia Grao (Statistics) and Sofía Álvarez (International Residents) launched a high profile campaign aimed at getting non-Spaniards onto the municipal padron, with the Información newspaper reporting that twelve-hundred people did in fact register between May and September.

Guardia Drugs Haul The Guardia Civil have broken up five drug plantations and selling operations in Alicante Province, with three raids carried out in Cox, Redován and Rafal. Seven people have appeared in court, and all were granted bail, with the exception of a 34-year-old Spanish national from Rafal. The Guardia from Callosa de Segura arrested a 35year-old Cox resident for growing marijuana plants in an indoor patio area of his house, whilst the Guardia found a van in the Redován area that was carrying 320 marijuana plants.

The driver, from Orihuela, ran away, and even filed a false report saying that his van had been stolen. He faces false reporting charges, in addition to the drugs offences. The most dramatic haul came at a Rafal home, with a couple being arrested at the address. Their two children lived in a building that

housed 237 marijuana plants, as well as cocaine plants and hashish tablets. A lot of the marijuana had already been "wrapped up" ready for distribution, but Guardia officers also discovered 855 doses of psychedelic mushrooms, as well as an area that served as a cocaine laboratory.

Loads Of Money Spending by international tourists visiting Spain is rising in tandem with the increased visitor numbers, with nearly two billion euro put into the country's coffers by UK visitors alone in September. Just over two million British tourists came to

Spain in September, with their spending power up by six and a half percent compared to the same month in 2016. Falling exchange rates and any jitters over Brexit appear to have had little, if any impact, on visitor numbers and how much they

actually spend in this country while on holiday. German and French visitors were the next biggest spenders, as 2017 is guaranteed to be the best ever year for international visitor numbers along with the money they put into the Spanish economy.

Black Spot Death

A 29-year-old man died on Saturday after an accident on the N-332 southbound in Gran Alacant, around a kilometre out of the El Altet tunnel. His passenger was

trapped in the car after the incident at around 7.30 am, and he was taken to Elche General Hospital with a fractured femur and traumatic brain injuries. It's the latest incident on a

notorious black spot, with the accident caused by the vehicle clipping a guardrail on the side of the highway, causing it to flip into the air and to hit a tree. No other car was involved.

Brit’s Parking Nightmare A 93-year-old British driver got herself into a parking pickle on a Torrevieja street on Monday morning, after she ended up putting her car into the front of a house (picture from the Información newspaper). The woman was trying to park up on Calle Vicente Blasco Ibánez, close to the intersection with Rambla Juan Mateo, shortly before 11.00 am when she hit a snag. According to the Información newspaper, she encountered problems in parking between two cars, and hit them both. According to eyewitnesses, she lost control of her vehicle and ended up on the pavement on the opposite side of the steeet, before rolling into the residence and blocking the front door. The manouevre saw her car take down a number of

Mayor Disqualified

San Fulgencio’s mayor, Carlos Ramirez, has been barred from public office for eight and a half years, after an Orihuela court found him liable for prevarication concerning the case of a total of 195 thousand euro being given as 48 grants into a football club that he was actively involved in. He plans to appeal the ruling, but his imminent future seems very shaky. Ramirez resigned from the Partido Popular on Friday, of which has been a member for 27 years, in addition to being the current PP President in San Fulgencio. It’s now left the regional and San Fulgencio PP with the question as to what they do next over the mayor, with Ramirez postponing this week’s plenary meeting of the council. The events dated back to

between 2011 and 2014, with Ramirez (pictured outside the Orihuela courthouse in a photo from the Información newspaper) emphasising after the verdict that he had no plans to quit the San Fulgencio authority whilst the appeals process goes through at the Alicante Provincial Court. Ramirez said: - “I will not resign as mayor. What I did was a way of saving money for the local taxpayer, yet I have been condemned over the matter. At no time during the trial was it said that we had taken money or hurt San Fulgencio town hall in any way. I will keep proclaiming my innocence and I am going to appeal because the truth has to come out”. Meanwhile, the opposition PSOE socialists and the PIPN parties have called for him to quit as mayor and as

a councillor. A PIPN spokesman said: "It doesn’t seem it either moral or ethical for him to continue on the council. Rather than quitting the Partido Popular so as not to hurt his party, he should think more about the San Fulgencio municipality and the damage that he is doing. The regional PP knew what was going on, but irresponsibly allowed him (Ramirez) to continue in politics”. In the rulings from the Orihuela court, ex-San Fulgencio sports councillor Pascual Sempere received the identical public office ban as Ramirez , also over prevarication, and former San Fulgencio football club president, Antonio Irles (who stood for the PP in the local elections in 2011), got a seven year public office disqualification.

Anagram Teaser iron bollards to prevent vehicles getting onto the pavement, which fortunately had no pedestrians on it at the time. The right front tyre was taken out in the incident, but fortunately the driver only

suffered a few minor scratches and a blow to the head, and did not need any medical help. Torrevieja’s local police confirmed that all of her driving documentation was in order.

Indian Summer

A road warning with a difference has appeared on a Torrevieja street, after workmen misspelt the word STOP on Calle Terremoto at the junction with La Loma. The work was apparently done last Friday, with the ‘piece of art’ becoming something of an instant attraction for residents who were keen to take photos of the misspelling that has caused great amusement, but probably not much laughter within the corridors of Torrevieja

Town Hall, who got the word repainted on Monday.

Tragedy Avoided

It will come as little surprise to find out that last month was one of the warmest and driest Octobers over the last 70 years in Alicante Province and the Murcia region. Official figures show that the average temperature was nearly two degrees

Celsius higher than the October norm in Alicante Province, at 18.2 degrees Celsius, whilst rainfall levels were 65% down what can be normally expected, as drought warnings continue to be issued. It was sixth warmest and driest October in the Alicante province since

1950, with a high pressure belt almost stationary in the area last month. Where is it now? Murcia's figures mirrored those for Alicante Province, with the region recording the sixth warmest October, since the present measuring and recording system was introduced in 1941.

A man has been arrested for planning to burn down a Dolores house on Monday afternoon, which had three children inside it. Another man was detained in the Vega Baja town for obstructing justice after the incident, which saw petrol poured over the ground floor of the property, with the youngsters on the top floor of the building. Members of the family called the police when they spotted what was going on, and, thankfully, the erstwhile arsonist fled before he could set the home alight. A joint operation by the

Guardia Civil and the Dolores local police (patrol car pictured during the operation) went into the night,

and the man was arrested, along with a second individual on Tuesday afternoon, detained for obstruction.

Extortion Arrests

Two Torrevieja local police officers who were arrested by the Guardia Civil at the start of last week have been refused bail by a Torrevieja judge and charged with bribery and being involved with a criminal organisation. A total of six men have

been arrested by the Guardia, with more people, including police officers being investigated. The plot allegedly involved mainly foreign-owned businesses, including restaurants having to hand over thousands of euros to make sure that

“irregularities” and “violations” were cleared up after a police inspection of premises. A Serbian (pictured being arrested) has also been jailed, with a man of Columbian nationality also up before the courts.

Boosting Capacity The installation of a new power supply will enable Torrevieja's desalination plant to start doubling production to 80 cubic hectometres, once the electrical work is completed by April of next year. The power enhancement work has been brought forward by eight months to enable the increased water capacity to be available as soon as possible as the drought continues across Alicante Province and the Murcia region.

Last Friday, the cabinet in Madrid approved additional spending of 11 million euro to

Bigastro Collapse

A Bigastro house partially collapsed early on Sunday morning, though none of the occupants were injured, as they were awakened by a loud bang at the other side of the building. The collapse came at

around 1.00 am at the property on Calle San Isidro, with Orihuela firefighters sealing off the home. Reports suggested that the next-door house might also be in danger of collapsing, with the family from

there, incluing two youngsters, also having to be evacuated. The buildings are around 50 years old, and a water leak is being looked at as one of the possible causes of the collapse.

Excavator Torched

San Pedro Park

Work has started on a new park off San Pedro del Pinatar’s Avenida De Las Salinas, close to the health centre. San Pedro council has budgeted 58 thousand euro for the project, which will take in over a thousand square metres, and will include a children’s playground, as well as a number of green spaces. The park should be completed before the end of the year.

Vandals have struck for the fifth time on the AVE high-speed rail network under construction in Murcia City, as part of a campaign to stop the development. Since mid-September, attacks have taken place on an industrial plant; two lorries have been torched; in addition to damage caused which stopped rail services

for days across the Murcia region. The latest attack involved an excavator being set fire to in the Santiago el Mayor area of Los Dolores in the early hours of Sunday morning. A detergent bottle filled with petrol was found inside a supermarket carrier bag in a second construction vehi-

cle. This time, the arsonists left evidence behind that may lead to their being identified, including a blue plastic bottle top on the ground and a disposable glove similar to those dispensed in petrol stations. The National Police said the fence around the vehicles, alongside the railway track, had been broken.

Doctor Shortages

Health minister Dolores Montserrat met with her regional counterparts across the country on Wednesday to talk about the shortage of GPs in local health centres, amongst other issues. The GP shortage was added to the agenda at the request of several regional governments, who are wanting for the Madrid administration to launch a fresh recruitment drive for doctors and nurses to make up their dwindling local practice teams. Recently, the Spanish Medical Oncology Society (SEOM) warned that Spain needed at least another 200 cancer specialists to meet current demand. Oncology departments in hospitals nationwide are

overwhelmed and cancer doctors overstretched, the SEOM says. The society has requested at least a 20 percent increase in oncologists across the country. And in the past five years, the Medical Colleges' Organisation (OMC) has received over 15,000 applications for accreditation certificates needed by Spanish doctors to allow them to practice overseas, especially from young, relatively recently-qualified medics who have had to go abroad to be able to work in their profession. The OMC criticises the fact that Spain has an overall doctor shortage, and yet thousands of qualified medics are leaving the

country as they cannot get a job at home. The matter of how to regulate the administering of medication by nurses was also discussed. A law change two years ago means nurses are now permitted to give patients drugs which do not require a doctor's prescription. Until then, they were not even allowed to give a paracetamol pill to a patient waiting in a hospital waiting area who was in pain, even though these are available in any pharmacy over the counter. This has long been a bone of contention for nurses, who say they study the same pharmacology module as part of their training as doctors do.

Octogenerian Mauled

An 82-year-old woman lost both her legs on Saturday after she was attacked by two dogs in the northern region of Pontevedra. Maria Dolores AB from Covelo was set upon by her neighbour's dogs -- one a pure French mastiff and the other, a boxer cross -- when

she was returning home from Saturday evening mass. Witnesses said the dogs bit the elderly woman on her lower legs and injured her badly, as they dragged her for around 30 metres on a road (pictured). Her injuries were so severe that medics had to

amputate both her legs. Authorities said that the dogs had escaped from their owner's garden over a stone wall, and no previous issues or concerns had been reported over the animals. Nevertheless, the animals were not microchipped and had no documentation to go with them.

Workers Pledge

San Javier airport operator AENA has said that the 50 staff working there will be transferred to the new facility at Corbera, once flights start there, with the current regional facility closing down. AENA is the only remaining bidder for the 25 year franchise to run Corvera International Airport, and though their proposals have yet to be formally studied and approved by a Murcia

government committee, it is seen as a mere formality that AENA will clinch the deal. Services to and from Corvera might begin before the end of next year, but despite the pledge over the 50 San Javier workers, there is little comfort on offer for the hundreds of people in the San Javier area who who earn a living because of where the regional airport is currently.

Rear-End Collision

Two cars collided in the Torretas area of Torrevieja on Sunday lunchtime, in the full gaze of people dining and drinking on the terraces of the bars and restaurants on Avenida Miguel de Unamuno. A black Citroen vehicle went into the back of another car in the vicinity of the

Mercadona supermarket, with the impact taking the Citreon car over the middle camber seperating the two single lanes of the road. The male driver of the Citreon suffered the worst of it with minor injuries and shock, as an investigation was launched into what caused the collision.

UK Interest Rate Rise Impacts the Size of Your Pension Pot

11

Keith Littlewood, International Financial Adviser at Blacktower, Costa Cálida The Bank of England raised interest rates for the first time in almost a decade last Thursday. Ok, it isn’t time to start running to the banks expecting great interest rates - as the rate is still only 0.5% after the 0.25% rise - but this could mean some significant impacts for many expats deciding to make Spain their home in 2018. Normally, an interest rate rise would signify a fall in FTSE share prices; last week’s announcement triggered a 1% rise on the day. The BOE base rate is what many institutions make their assumptions from. Many things can be impacted: loans rates, bonds, wages, but, more significantly, pension transfer values. In 2016, the Government announced the ‘pension freedom’, which allowed many people the ability to control their own pension pots. This triggered a huge outflux of funds from defined

benefit pension schemes in the UK and, because the base rate is the single most important factor in calculating transfer values, some of the individual transfer values have been reaching astronomical levels. Transfer values are still going to be very high as 0.5% is still a very low base rate, so all the figures, such as annuity rates and long-term bond rates, are still going to

be poor, but with the trend for interest rates now changing, and the Government considering making changes to how transfer values are calculated, the window for obtaining the huge transfer values might be showing the first signs of closing. If you have a deferred company pension scheme (one that you have not started taking benefits from) and not given it much

thought, you really should act now if you want to take advantage of the overgenerous transfer values offered by companies. If you are unsure about how to go about finding out the value of your pension, just contact me and I will point you in the right direction.

Pets are equally, if not more, at risk of being affected by passive smoking as humans, research suggests. Animals inhale more smoke and - because of their grooming routines - also digest nicotine when licking their fur, a study by Glasgow University said. Dogs are at risk of developing lung or sinus cancer while smaller pets such as birds, rabbits and guinea pigs can face breathing issues and skin disease. Experts hope the findings will motivate pet owners to quit smoking. The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons has teamed up with The Royal College of Nursing for a new campaign aimed at telling owners about the damage that can be done. Wendy Preston, the RCN's Head of Nursing, said: "Many people would be horrified to discover their second-hand smoke was harming their pet, and in some cases seriously shortening the animal's life. "We want to make it easier for vets and vet nurses to have that conversation with patients." The university, which is renowned for its small animal hospital, has been carrying out research on the effects of passive smoking on pets for several years, Professor Clare Knottenbelt said 40 dogs - half of them from homes with smokers - were recruited for the study and samples of their hair were analysed for nicotine levels, while their owners were asked to fill in a survey detailing how often they or any visitors smoked. The same study was then carried out on 60 pet cats, with a particular focus on whether any link could be established between second-hand smoke and feline lymphoma, a can-

cer that affects the white blood cells of cats. She said: "A cat can be from a smoke-free home yet still have high nicotine levels."

Seagate Wealth Management

Keeping it Local Many people think that once they have signed on the dotted line for their pension transfer, savings plan or investment portfolio, that is the end of their relationship with their financial adviser. Nothing could be farther from the truth as far as we at Seagate are concerned. This is where the relationship starts. If you were one of the many thousands of people who took out an endowment mortgage in the eighties with a promise of the mortgage being paid off and a Porsche on the drive, only to discover twenty years’ later you were in fact not going to be able to clear the mortgage, then you will understand why investments of any type need to be nurtured. As a result of the lack of supervision and management, what looked a good investment to start with proved unsuitable over the long term. Independent financial advice is vital in all stages of managing your finances, but on-going support and monitoring of the investments is the only way to ensure the results you are looking for can be achieved. Ideally, your financial adviser should be local to you, with an office complete with a team to support them, and in turn their clients. We believe our success is a result of two fundamental principles: the strength of the relationship between our advisers and their clients and our distinctive approach to investment advice. We offer regular review meetings in a professional environment to ensure you are kept up to date with how your pensions and or savings and investments are performing. This ensures you can work towards and achieve your financial goals, and of course the peace of mind that comes with being in control. If your financial adviser does not offer this level of service, or you are thinking of transferring your pension or investing, then give us a call on 965 704 338 or email: Contact@SeagateWealth.es

Slumber Disturbed

A 65-year-old woman asleep in her bed got a surprising wake-up call early on Saturday morning, after she was struck by lightning that went down the chimney of her villa. She suffered only minor

injuries and did not even have to go to hospital. The unnamed victim was in the bedroom of her property in Villaviciosa de Odรณn in the Greater Madrid region, when a bolt of lightning shot down her chimney

at around 1.00 am. The metal flashing conducted the lightning, drawing it to her roof. It went straight into her bedroom, with the end result leaving her with multiple cuts and bruises.

School Demonstration

Parents, teachers and pupils joined forces to protest about the lack of teachers at an Orihuela Costa school. The demonstration took place last Friday outside the CEIP Los Dolses, which has

a large number of nonSpanish children, said to be around 44 different nationalities, amidst claims from parents that more teachers are needed to help bring them youngsters up to speed.

They also repeated their concerns about the dangers of an outside wall, which Orihuela council recently sealed off with additional fencing as a precaution, adding that it posed no danger.

Pomegranate Pilferers

Four hundred and fifteen kilos of stolen pomegranates have been recovered during the recent harvest season, in a joint operation between the Guardia Civil in Dolores, and the Albatera local police.

Two big rustling gangs were rumbled, with three men arrested in an early morning operation recovering 200 kilos of the fruit, whilst 140 kilos were discovered in the hands of four thieves.

Albatera police chief Pedro Serna said that pomegranate rustling is nothing new, and that they normally make three or four swoops every year during the autumnal months of September and October.

Locker Stealer

A 29-year-old Madrid man, who was on holiday in Guardamar, has been arrested for stealing 900 euro from the lockers at a gymnasium on an Elche municipality campsite over the summer. The Guardia Civil from Santa Pola are also investi-

gating whether the man, who has been bailed, was involved in stealing from another gym in the Guardamar area. The individual was said to have carried out five robberies at the Elche facility, when the gym was full of tourists, and he made a

copy of the keys to let him get into the lockers, where he solely concentrated on taking cash. The Guardia believe that more tourists were robbed, however, because many were of non-Spanish origin, they did not file a complaint with the authorities.

Guardia Corruption

Ten Guardia Civil officers based in Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada have been arrested as part of an investigation by a Torrevieja judge into drug trafficking and corruption. A total of 26 people have been detained during Operation Sakura, which has been carried out across the Alicante, Valencia, Cádiz

and Murcia regions, with nine of the Guardia officers being refused bail after a Torrevieja court appearance. Two of the officers are specifically being accused of drug trafficking, whilst a host of other charges have been laid down against them and their colleagues, including bribery, extortion,

criminal group membership, theft, and coercion. Investigations have been going on for two years since 2015, with Torrevieja judge Juana López Hoyos heading up the secret operation, with three cocaine laboratories being raided and the arrest of British, Spanish, Belgian, and Columbian nationals.

The End Of The Road

A tender for the drafting work for the dual carriageway upgrading of the N-332 highway in Torrevieja has been published by the Public Works ministry in Madrid, with construction not scheduled to start before 2020 at the earliest. On the back of the recent formal announcement that the long-delayed project is

going ahead, the ministry has published details of a tender this week in the Official State Gazette. The first phase is a contract worth just under a million euro for the drafting of the new dual carriageway, with the period of the drafting work to take place over 18 months. Assuming there are no

problems in regard to environmental impact studies, the timings at their most optimistic level come out at showing the early part of 2020 as the earliest possible start time for construction work to begin. Public Works minister Íñigo de la Serna said that 40 million euros would be invested in the project.

Hi Richard, need a bit of help with P D F Viewer. I bought my computer from you and need you to advise me whether I am able to install the above or is it already within. I am worried to try to do anything in case it crashes. I have a couple of bookings that I need to obtain to print out from EasyJet etc. I am away very shortly, so can you please let me know as soon as possible as what I need to do! Many thanks, Josephine Hi Josephine, when we supply computers we always install Adobe Acrobat Reader – the thing you need to read .pdf files, so if it’s one of our computers it should already be installed, if it’s not then you can get a free copy of it from the following address… http://get.adobe.com/reader/

Richard, how does one group forward an email on Outlook? Is there a way of viewing your contacts, and click adding them, as you could on Hotmail?? If Outlook was supposed to be an improvement, they've failed!! Dismally!!Many thanks,Peter.

Hi Peter, you can forward an email on Outlook.Com by clicking on the little arrow next to the “reply” button. In order to send a single email to a number of people you can either just select the people and place them in the “to” or “cc” or “bcc” field, if how ever you want to create a group so that you can send further emails to the same group of people then you should create a new group, you can do this by going into your contacts – now called “people” in outlook.com and clicking on the arrow next to “new”, you can then choose “group” and populate it with the people you want to be in that group. You can find your contacts by clicking on the arrow next to “Outlook” in the top left of the screen and then selecting “people”. You are not alone in struggling with the new version.

Roasted Autumn Vegetables with Lancashire Cheese

Ingredients 1 large butternut squash (about 600-700g/1lb 5oz - 1lb 9oz in weight) 1 medium red onion 6 tbsp olive oil 1 large sprig fresh sage 1 large courgette 1 tbsp balsamic or sherry vinegar 100g Lancashire cheese

Method Preheat the oven to fan180C/ 200C/ gas 6. Using a sharp knife, cut the squash in half and scoop out the seeds. Cut the halves into smaller pieces so you can peel them more easily. Chop the flesh into big bite-sized pieces – they don’t have to be neat. Halve the onion and trim the root end leaving a little on to hold the segments together. Peel and then cut each half into four wedges. Scatter the squash and onion in a large roasting tin so they have plenty of room to roast, drizzle over 5 tbsp of the oil and toss together. Strip the sage leaves from the stem and roughly chop – you should have

about 2 tbsps. Scatter over the vegetables and season. Roast for 20 minutes, stirring once halfway through. Meanwhile, slice the courgette thickly and toss with the remaining oil. Remove the roasting tin from the oven and push the partly cooked squash and onion to the side. Put the courgette slices flat on the base and season. Roast for a further 10 minutes, until all the vegetables are tender. Remove tin from the oven, sprinkle the vinegar over the vegetables and toss. Crumble over the Lancashire cheese. Toss lightly so the cheese melts a little and serve. Ready: 45 Mins Serves 4 as side dish or 2 as a main

Classic Pumpkin Pie With Pecan & Maple Cream

Ingredients 550g piece pumpkin, peeled and cut into chunks 500g pack shortcrust pastry 175g light muscovado sugar 2 eggs 142ml pot double cream 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp allspice 1 tsp ground ginger small grating of nutmeg For the pecan and maple cream 142ml tub double cream

Tip into a colander to drain, then leave to cool. On a lightly floured surface, roll out pastry to the thickness of a £1 coin so it’s wide enough to line a 25cm tart tin. Ease the pastry into the case, making sure there’s an overhang, then chill for 30 mins. Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6. Line the case with foil and baking beans, then

bake for 15-20 mins. Remove foil and beans, then cook for a further 10 mins until the pastry is golden. Turn oven down to 160C/fan 140C/gas 3. Meanwhile, place pumpkin, sugar, eggs, cream and spices in a food processor, then blend until smooth. Pour into the baked pastry case, then bake for 1 hr until the filling has puffed up in the centre (it will sink as it cools). Remove from tin, then leave to cool. Whip the cream with the maple syrup until thickened, then fold in the pecans. Serve spoonfuls of the cream with slices of the pie. Prep: 20 Mins Cook: 1 Hour 15 Mins serves: 8

Having heart surgery is much better in the afternoon, major new study finds Nobody wants to have open heart surgery. But if you do, you want to have it in that afternoon. That's the conclusion of a major new study that found there is a significantly higher risk of damage for people having surgery in the morning. And it's all because of the body clock, or circadian rhythms, which help keep us regulated through the day. It decides when we wake up, sleep and eat – and how ready we are to recover from major surgery. The new study, published in the Lancet, found that there are almost 300 genes that link the body clock to heart damage. And it found that there is a link between a person's body clock and how at risk they are of undergoing heart damage and major events like heart attacks after having heart surgery. Study author Professor David Montaigne, University of Lille, France, said: "Our

study found that postsurgery heart damage is more common among people who have heart surgery in the morning, compared to the afternoon. "Our findings suggest this is because part of the biological mechanism behind the damage is affected by a person's circadian clock and the underlying genes that control it. "As a result, moving heart surgery to the afternoon may help to reduce a person's risk of heart damage after surgery." Researchers looked at the medical records of 596 people who had heart valve replacement surgery including half who had surgery in the morning, half in the afternoon. They checked for any major cardiac events such as a heart attack, heart failure or death from heart disease in this research which took place between January 2009 to December 2015. They found that 28 out of

298 afternoon patients had adverse events while 54 out of 298 morning patients experienced such events. The researchers suggest this could equate to one major event being avoided for every 11 patients who have afternoon surgery and that people who had surgery in the afternoon had a 50% lower risk of a major cardiac event, compared with people who had surgery in the morning. The team also tracked the health of 88 patients who were randomly scheduled for heart valve replacement surgery in the morning or afternoon between January 2016 to February 2017. Those who had afternoon surgery had lower levels of heart tissue damage after surgery, compared with morning surgery patients, according to the researchers. Tests on heart tissue samples from 30 of the patients including 14 who had morning surgery and 16 from the

afternoon surgery group showed that the afternoon surgery samples more quickly regained their ability to contract when put in conditions similar to the heart refilling with blood. Genetic analysis of these samples also showed that 287 genes linked to the circadian clock were more active in the afternoon surgery sample.

The researchers believe this suggests the heart is subject to the body's circadian clock and the post-surgery results highlight that the heart is maybe weaker at repairing in the morning than in the afternoon. Larger trials are need to test the findings. Professor Michel Ovize, Hopital Louis Pradel, France, said the scientists

have "clearly shown that circadian rhythm is of clinical importance in aortic valve replacement surgery" but that more research is needed. He added: "Even before we have drugs available to regulate the circadian clock, one might propose that high-risk patients should preferentially be operated on in the afternoon."

Japanese Company Gives Employees Six Extra Days Of Holiday If They Don't Smoke A Japanese company is incentivising its staff to give up smoking by providing

non-smokers with six whole days extra holiday per year. According to staff at market-

ing firm Piala Inc, based in Tokyo, each cigarette break takes staff at least 15 min-

utes, due to the fact that the office is based on the 29th floor of an office block. According to International Business Times, CEO Takao Asuka believes the policy will help employees to quit the unhealthy habit. “I hope to encourage employees to quit smoking through incentives rather than penalties or coercion”, he said. A 2016 survey found that a total of 19.8% of Japanese adults smoke. Although this is reportedly the first time on record the percentage has fallen below 20%, the country still has far more smokers than in the UK, where fewer than one in five (17%) of adults smoke and 29% of adults here in Spain. Just 30 of the company’s

120 employees have taken advantage of the additional paid holiday since the scheme was introduced. One of which was employee and spokesperson Hirotaka Matsushima, who used the extra days to have a long weekend away with his family. “One of our non-smoking staff put a message in the company suggestion box

earlier in the year saying that smoking breaks were causing problems”, he told The Telegraph. “Our CEO saw the comment and agreed, so we are giving non-smokers some extra time off to compensate.” He claimed the scheme has encouraged four people to give up smoking, so it looks like this company may be onto something.

Are gardening chemicals contributing to your health problems? Gardening is a healthy pastime that helps to improve our quality of life. Gardening aids in the reduction of stress in many ways, by taking our minds from everyday stressful situations and focused on caregiving. gardening also creates a positive state of mind, known to reduce blood pressure and promote relaxation. As beneficial as gardening is to our health, it may be possible that gardening chemicals are silently contributing to, and even causing, chronic diseases. Many of the chemical compounds used as pesticides and herbicides are

known to contain toxic compounds. The most com-

monly used gardening chemical for eliminating

weed is Roundup. The main ingredient in Roundup

is glyphosate, and many studies have implicated glyphosate in some chronic diseases. Roundup causes damage to the nerves, liver, kidney, intestines and is also known to cause breast cancer, brain cancer, coeliac disease, depression, diabetes, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and respiratory infections. Many insecticides contain toxic compounds called neonicotinoids. These are absorbed into the bodies of both harmful and useful insects, such as bees and butterflies, thereby contributing to the dwindling population of bees and butterflies. This

has disastrous effects on the survival of fruit and seed-bearing plants. There are alternative pesticides and herbicides that have little or no impact on the environment, the human body and other plant and animal life. Vinegar (Acetic Acid) is a very effective weed killer and is available in many horticultural shops. Rotenone is a natural pesticide derived from the seeds and stems of some plants.

Acid reflux drugs linked to increased by stomach cancer risk Sharon Moore "A drug commonly used to treat acid reflux is linked to a more than doubled risk of developing stomach cancer," reports The Guardian. Researchers wanted to investigate whether there's a link between medicines known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and stomach cancer. Widely used PPIs include esomeprazole, lansoprazole, omeprazole, pantoprazole and rabeprazole. PPIs are used to treat acid reflux and protect the stomach lining, have been linked to stomach cancer before. But they're also used to treat H. pylori, a bacterial infection that can also cause reflux-like symptoms and is known to raise the risk of stomach cancer. This somewhat complicates the picture.

Researchers from Hong Kong studied 63,397 people who'd been treated for stomach infection with H. pylori bacteria. Even after the bacteria had been killed, those who took PPIs on a long-term basis were more likely to be diagnosed with stomach cancer in the following 7 to 8 years of followup. Because of the study design, we can't tell if PPIs were the cause of the increased stomach cancer risk. It could also have been down to other factors. It's important to keep the results in proportion. Long-term use of PPIs was linked to around 4 additional stomach cancers cases per 10,000 people per year. PPIs are one of the most widely prescribed types of drug.

But people who use them shouldn't be particularly concerned by this study: an increase in a very small risk is still a very small risk.

COME AND JOIN US! It’s the perfect time to consider joining Find A Spanish Property as a property associate, as property prices are on the rise, and the market is blossoming. 2016 was a positive year for the real estate market with prices having bottomed out the year before with modest price rises. Things have really kicked in during 2017, in strong contrast to the recession period that kicked in during 2008 and 2009. Official government figures confirm that prices are rising this year, and outside the cities of Madrid and Barcelona, Alicante Province which features the Costa Blanca, and the Murcia region with the Costa Calida tourist area, are two of the biggest areas on mainland Spain which are seeing substantial rises in demand along with price increases. The cranes are back with new homes being built by the coast, and the re-sale market continues to rise, fuelled by low interest rates in Spain. Statistics show that demand for homes from British buyers is still high, despite pessimistic fears last year over the Brexit factor, coupled with purchasers from across Europe, and even further afield. Recent surveys show that the majority of British people living in Spain are aged 65 and over, and website statistics confirm that older British nationals with no mortgage on their UK property are still very much looking at Spain as their area of choice to buy a holiday home, or even somewhere to retire to. It’s a great time to get involved in becoming a seller of real-estate in Spain, especially since most of the cowboys disappeared thanks to the recession nearly a decade ago. We like to think that we’ve played our own small part in helping to seeing them off, by offering an honest business that people are proud to recommend and that we now want to substantially expand.

The rupestrian painting is one of the first creative expressions of humanity: in the absence of proper canvas, the walls of the caves were used to reflect the artistic realizations.

All over Spain, you can find some 700 rupestrian paintings, some of which are more than 40,000 years old. Some 302 of them are in the Region of Valencia, one more reason to explore the area. There are three different types of rupestrian painting in the Iberian Peninsula: Palaeolithic art, Levante art and the schematic art. The Palaeolithic Art is the most ancient of the three (dated between 40,000 and 10,000 years B.C.). It included almost only animal representations, with no complete human figures but only some drawings of hands. They are usually found inside caves and deep grottos. Two examples can be seen in Safor and another one in Requena. The Levante Art is dated from 6,000 and 4,000 years B.C. Man is the main character. For the first time the human figure appears in the paintings, often hunting animals like deer and bovine or dancing and fighting. There are a lot of samples of Art Levantino all over the Region. The best are the ones in the Valley of CofrentesAyora and in the region of the Canal de Navarrés, with the zone of the Macizo del Caroig one of the places which preserves more samples of Art Levantino. Some of the fantastic locations to discover true treasures are the “Cave of les Alcusses”, the “Abrigo de la Penya”, the “Abrigo de Gontrán” and the “Barranco de la Valltorta”. Highly advisable is the Museo de la Valltorta, from where guided visit to discover the zone depart. Another very interesting place is Bicorp, where you can visit “the Cave of the Spider” and the “Abrigo del Barranco Moreno”.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

Combining humour and drama with a subject like autism takes a bit of doing in terms of getting it right, but the very welcome return of The A Word (BBC 1, Tuesday) shows that it can be done, and done brilliantly. It really is a masterclass in writing from Peter Bowker, with every word and sentence offering something in a beautifully executed piece of work that deserves to have as much fuss made about it as the likes of Doctor Foster, Broadchurch, and Line of Duty. We’re two years on from series one, and little Joe early on utters the word autism for the first time, and his parents don’t know how to react and to deal with it. Ultimately they realise that despite their best efforts (and a couple of journeys by Joe up a ladder to the top of a school building), he cannot make progress at his local school, and they need to take a different approach with him, and get Joe some special schooling. There’s some magic at work in The A Word with the

The Masterful “A Word”

cast delivering from youngster Max Vento as Joe, with his love for classic seventies punk music via his headphones, through to old hand Christopher Eccleston as his granddad, who is given some cracking comedy lines, especially in his first scene. Like with the US hit, The Good Doctor, The A Word shows that a sensitive topic can be well-handled and bring a big audience into understanding exactly what autism is about, but be entertaining and thoughtprovoking at the same time. As they used to say on Points of View, well done BBC! A very different Joe was facing a court martial that was more like a kangaroo court in the final part of the intriguing The Last Post (BBC 1, Sunday). The show set amongst the British military police in mid-sixties Aden, had Captain Joe disobeying orders in order to rescue the commanding officer’s son, and we got ourselves a happy ending, but also a couple of unresolved teasers like Joe’s previous relationship to a

married woman that suggest that creator and writer Peter Moffat might be doing a second series. I hope so, as The Last Post offered something different, but surely some of the cast looking a wee bit too handsome for the ravages of the Middle East? The Detectorists (BBC Four, Wednesday) is a gentle yet funny comedy about

two friends (Mackenzie Crook and Toby Jones) who are passionate metal detectorists and take their hobby to extremes. It’s tender and touching at times, and creator/writer Crook has said that this will be the last series, as quite rightly he wants to maintain the high standard. Quite right too, and like The A Word, not enough noise is made about

this little gem. Having mentioned The Good Doctor earlier (and regular readers know that I think it is fantastic), let me quickly mention what else is big in the new autumn dramas from the States. Well worth watching, and already picked up for a full run on CBS, is a new starring vehicle for Bones star David Boreanaz, called Seal

Team. It’s the sort of action show that CBS enjoy showing and they get mega ratings for them. There’s nothing new about it, but it’s not boring and I’m pretty much hooked on it, and I’m sure a UK and a Spanish channel will pick it up. It just took a bit of getting to seeing Boreanaz in a different role after a dozen seasons of doing Bones.

C4 Commissions Christmas Scousers In a Manger

For the past five years a group of tinsel-tastic Liverpudlians, The Christmas Decorators, have embarked on a trip to Bethlehem on a festive mission to decorate Manger Square in time for Christmas. This year, in Scousers in a Manger, a one off festive treat we’re set to follow them on a journey filled with joy, hope and laughter but also fraught with tension and potential danger. Leading the UK team is ambitious Operations Director Ged Comerford who takes great pride in lighting up the Holy Land but who knows in our increasingly volatile world this year’s trip to the West Bank could be his riskiest yet. The special will follow Ged

and his team of Santa’s helpers as they design and plan the festive concept but in this age of austerity, budgets are cut and money is tight so Ged will be sharing decision making and decorating with his Palestinian counterpart and a local team. Expect cultural differences, language barriers and plenty of laughs as the team work against the clock to fulfil a spectacular switch on of the lights in Bethlehem’s Manger Square, known to millions as the birthplace of Jesus. Lizi Wootton, Commissioning Editor for Features at Channel 4 said, “From Merseyside to the Holy Land, we’re looking forward to following Ged, his team and every bauble on their epic journey.”

PEDESTRIANS IN THE DARK – AS THE NIGHTS DRAW IN: TIPS FROM IAM ROADSMART •

Driving conditions are remarkably different in the night time, vision is reduced and it can be more difficult to spot hazards such as bends and junctions and to see vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. If you are driving at times when you would usually be asleep then you are in much greater danger of falling asleep behind the wheel.

With summer well and truly over and the clocks now reverting to CET, the nights will be well and truly drawing in. During the period of shorter daylight hours (October to March) we statistically see more incidents involving pedestrians and vulnerable road users than during other months. With the most incidents being between 3pm and 7pm we need to keep our eyes peeled for our vulnerable pedestrians in the dark. This week’s tips for keeping pedestrians safe are from IAM RoadSmart’s head of driving and riding standards, Richard Gladman. Keep an eye on your speed, remember you are twice as likely to kill a pedestrian driving at 35kph as you are if driving at 30kph. Be especially aware near schools, the only predictable thing about children is how unpredictable they can be. Remember 20kph in these areas really is plenty. Children can be harder to see and may run out between parked vehicles, remember to ‘LOOK OUT’ (over, under and through) vehicles, you might just spot someone before they step out. Some pedestrians give a tell-tale sign of what they are about to do – look out for people who keep looking over their shoulder, they might be looking to cross the road. If you have a generous space in front of you and vehicles behind you they may well run across rather than wait for all the traffic to come past. You also need to watch for mobile phone ‘zombies’, if you see someone concentrating on their phone they are not concentrating on the traffic, be ready for them to just step out. When passing stationary vehicles keep at least a door’s width whenever possible, not just for the car door that might open into your path; also for someone or something coming out into your path from between the vehicles. Be considerate where you park, parking too close to a junction can obstruct someone’s view and make it harder to see, also be aware of not obstructing pavements and dropped kerbs. When it’s raining and blowing a gale pedestrians are more likely to dash about and road safety often falls lower on their list of priorities than trying to keep dry. With the clocks just gone back it can take children on bikes a bit of time to get used to the fact they need lights and can often get caught out being out without lights – make sure your children are aware of the need for lights on their bikes. Richard said: “In a perfect world pedestrians would all be on the pavement and would never have to cross a road, in a near perfect one a pedestrian on a road would be wearing flashing high viz and your car would be shouting about their presence – in our real world it is up to us to share the road space, be aware and help where we can. An effort to be courteous will go a long way to making someone’s day and will help keep us all safe.”

Justin’s Bucking The Trend

Justin Rose earned his second straight victory on Sunday at the Turkish Open on the European Tour, moving closer to the coveted top spot in the world ranking. Golf has become an entertaining spectacle of rising young stars trying to outdo each other each week. Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler, Hideki Matsuyama, Jon Rahm and Rory Mcilroy are all 28-years-old or younger, and they are all ranked top 10 in the world. However, nestled in the top 10, lurking within striking distance of the No. 1 ranking, is 37-year-old Englishman Justin Rose. With his latest win, Rose proved that golf isn't just about the "next generation". "I think I've always seen getting to No. 1 as a by-product of winning the tournaments that I want to win," Rose said before the Turkish Open. "It's always been — it's not my primary focus, I suppose.” When Rose erased an eight-shot deficit behind Dustin Johnson three weeks ago to win the WGC-HSBC Champions in China, it marked his first win since donning gold at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Calmer Sailing

It was nice and steady for the latest SAMM autumn races (Sailing Association Mar Menor), compared to everybody being battered and bruised in their windy mid-October outing! In the first contest, held in light winds, the single-handed boats soon developed a substantial lead whilst the 18 foot and 21 foot Balaton Group boats struggled to get around the course. The race was shortened to three laps giving the widespread crews the chance of some quick refreshment

ashore before the afternoon race. That contest was won by Julian Singleton (pictured left in Topaz Duo), followed by Tug Wilson (pictured second left) in Shoestring Tres, with Don Clarke third in Harley 12.2 The wind picked up for the second race, which the first two of the first contest repeated on what turned out to be a challenging contest that favoured the lighter boats, with Dianne Hardwick and Vernon O’Byrne (pictured on the right) coming third in Shoestring Uno.

Rose had close calls in between the two wins, including a playoff loss to Sergio Garcia at the 2017 Masters, but he seemed incapable of closing out tournaments in their final moments. That has clearly changed, as Rose calmly came from behind two consecutive weeks to remind everyone he's still one of the best golfers in the world. In fact, Rose himself even believed the last three weeks completely changed the outlook of his year. "I would have said — you know, it would be a B-minus probably a couple weeks ago," Rose said on Sunday. "Good solid year, Top-10 in the FedEx Cup, it was good. But no win, can't really give yourself much more than a B-minus for that. Now I'm probably at an A-minus with one putt at Augusta away from being an A-plus.” "I've been very consistent this year. I've played a lot of good, solid golf and it just hasn't converted into wins. Now I've checked that box and now it begins to be a pretty good year."

Rugby Round Up

There’s a fresh round of matches this Saturday in the Murcia FERRMUR league, with the men’s division seeing ITV Orihuela Vega Baja looking to maintain their fine start, after two wins from their opening two matches, as they entertain Murcia University. In contrast, the Mar Menor Squalos have lost their two openers, and they entertain Lorca. The cadetes are scheduled to start this weekend, after last weekend’s matches were postponed, due to FERRMUR not having received assurances that

the appropriate group insurance policies had been activated. The ITV Orihuela Vega Baja cadetes (pictured above) are scheduled, insurance permitting, to entertain Murcia University tomorrow (Saturday) with a 4.00 pm kick-off at the Universidad Miguel Hernández stadium, ahead of the 5.30 pm start for the seniors. Moving over to the famale teams, Elche CRU’s team have started well in their league, with a second straight win, as they run out 15-12 victors over Lorca last weekend.

Another Monte Victory

CD MONTESINOS 2 CD ALTET 1 Montesinos have put aside their shaky start to life in Valencia Primera regional group eight, with a win, which has taken them into the top half of the table in seventh position, which most of the 325 fans on Sunday would have settled for, at the start of the season in September. Up against one of the teams directly above them, Monte had a shaky start, and a scrappy first half, not helped by the blustery conditions, which for the first half worked in Monte’s favour, with the ball being blown towards the Altet half. Chances were few and far

between, with Vaz having the best chance in the first period, after some good work out wide from Carlos Ventura. Ventura was a thorn in the Altet side at both ends of the ground, but it was hardly an entertaining spectacle for the spectators. Two goals within the first four minutes of the second half changed everything. Firstly Maccan crossed the ball to Vaz who headed the ball into the net, and then following a pass from Ventura, Manu Sanchez slotted the ball home to put Monte in the driving seat. More goals should have

come, but chances by Vaz, Maccan, and Ventura went abegging, with Altet throwing everything at the home side in the final ten minutes. Dani pulled off a great save, high and to his left, but a few minutes later the visitors pulled one back to hardly any celebration by the team nor their fans, as the Altet team knew they only had minutes to level the score, producing a nail-biting end as the referee added five minutes to the second half. Montesinos now go to tenth-placed FC Bahia Santa Pola this Sunday morning, with an 11.30 am kick-off.

Shown The Door Almoradi coach Juanan Cases has been sacked from his job at the Preferente Group Four club, with Sunday’s home defeat by Villena (see below), being the last straw for the club board, who fired him on Monday evening. The ex-CD Cox coach was brought in back in June on the back of Almoradi’s relegation from the Valencia regional third division, and after a poor start, they appeared to be getting things back on track, before sucessive defeats against Thader and Villena. Reports suggest that a number of the players had been involved in arguments with Cases, and board members talked to them, Almoradi president Paco Albaladejo (no stranger to

firing the bullet and pictured with him on his appointment

less than five months ago) sent Cases packing.

Missed Chances Abound

FB REDOVAN 0 CD TORREVIEJA 0 It’s often said that an away draw is always a good point, and that’s what Torrevieja had to settle for away to Redovan last Saturday in their Preferente Group Four encounter, which now leaves Torry fourth in the table, five

points behind leaders Hercules. There may have been no goals, but there was plenty of action with both sides creating plenty of opportunities, which from the Torrevieja perspective was good, but frustrating at the same time,

as they failed to take their chances - not for the first time this season! Come the end of the season, that could be costly for Torry, who return to the Vicente Garcia stadium this Sunday to take on struggling Petrelense.

Almoradi with 12 minutes remaining, but it was of scant consolation as Almoradi served up a Sunday lunchtime stinker for their supporters, which proved to be a one defeat too many for the board who moved against Cases the

following day. Neverthless despite successive defeats, Almoradi are ninth in the table with 13 points, and now got to Orihuela for a Saturday afternoon clash (4.00 pm kick-off), with the home side also on 13 points.

Thader On A Roll

ALICANTE UNIVERSITY 0 CD THADER 2 Thader seem to like playing against the more fancied sides in Preferente Group Four, and they handed out the Alicante University side a lesson last Saturday, as they continue to put aside their awful start to the season.

The Rojales-based team were terrific in the first half, with Dani Lucas in six minutes and Arias in the 23rd minute, putting them deservedly into the driving seat. More goals surprisingly didn’t come for Thader,

whilst keeper Jovi was barely troubled over the whole 90 minutes. Thader are now in tenth position in the table, and another away trip beckons this Saturday at struggling UD Ilicitana, with a 5.00 pm start.

VILLARREAL 0 ELCHE 0 REAL MADRID 3 LAS PALMAS 0

BARCELONA 2 SEVILLA 1 Paco Alcacer stole the limelight in Lionel Messi's 600th game for Barcelona as his two goals saw off Sevilla last Saturday at the Nou Camp. La Liga leaders Barcelona were rewarded for a blistering start when Alcacer capitalised on an error from Sevilla captain Sergio Escudero after 23 minutes. The visitors responded strongly in the second half and levelled through Guido Pizarro (59), but Alcacer turned home from Ivan Rakitic's cross just six minutes later. Victory for Barcelona sees them keep their four-point gap at the top of La Liga, with Valencia remaining in second place, after they cruised to a 3-0 win over Leganes. Barcelona head to Leganes a week tomorrow after this weekend’s international break.

Marco Asensio (pictured above) scored a stunning goal to help Real Madrid return to winning ways with a comfortable victory over Las Palmas on Sunday. Casemiro (pictured below) headed in the opener in the 41st minute for Real, which had lost their last two games against Girona and Tottenham. Asensio made it 2-0 shortly after half-time when he rifled in a first-time effort from 30 yards, and Isco rounded off the scoring in the 74th minute. The win sees Real close the gap on La Liga leaders Barcelona to eight points, with Real back in derby action after this weekend’s international break as they travel to the Wanda Metropolitano to take on rivals Atletico Madrid.

Second-placed Elche would have been happier with this point as opposed to Villarreal, who lie just below them in the Segunda Division B table, after this Sunday lunchtime clash. The bad news was that Sory Kaby picked up an injury that will keep him out of the side for the next few matches. Both teams gave the impression that neither of them wanted to lose, as they showed each other a lot of respect, with Elche keeper José Juan barely troubled. Barring the odd counter-attack, Villarreal appeared more on the back foot towards the closing stages of the match, but the Ilicitanos seemed to lack bite up front, as Nino had a quiet match by his standards. Besides the away point, the big news out of Sunday’s match was an injury to Elche’s new star and top scorer, Sory Kaba who will be out for three weeks, after suffering a torn muscle in his left leg. It also means he won’t be hooking up with the Guinea national side for their friendly matches during the international break. The Ilicitanos are eight points behind leaders Mallorca, with a big showdown looming away to the island side next weekend. First up for Elche is a home match against struggling SD Formentera this Sunday kicking off at noon.

Suarez Pledge

Barcelona striker Luis Suarez (pictured in Saturday’s Sevilla match) has vowed to return to action in a "spectacular" condition once finally putting his injury troubles to one side. The 30-year-old has yet to truly get going for the La Liga leaders this term, scoring just three goals in 14 matches and not at all in his last five outings. Suarez has put his goalscoring woes down to a troublesome knee problem but, having been given two weeks to rest after being left out of Uruguay's latest squad, the former Liverpool star believes that he will soon reach peak fitness. "Have a rest and finish recovering well, during these two weeks, I will come (back) spectacular," he told SPORT. "After the injury I had, I hurried a lot with the knee and in the long run it can hurt you. I had a lot of pressure on the physical level, just getting to the national team and until now I had not had a break. "The best thing was to make an arrangement with the national team and Barca, as the club let me go with the national team just after the injury when I had not played yet. These friendlies (against Poland and Austria) are not a priority for the selection.” "You always have some fear of getting to have some blow and make it worse, but after this break and with the treatment I'm doing I will not have pain anymore." Suarez netted 28 times in the league alone last season, placing him behind only teammate Lionel Messi in the La Liga scoring charts.

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has defended misfiring Cristiano Ronaldo, insisting he is helpful to Real Madrid even when not scoring. He’s also supported Karim Benzema, who got some stick from Real fans at the weekend. Ronaldo has scored just once in seven La Liga games this season, but has netted 12 times for club and country overall, and set up Isco's goal in the Sunday’s win over Las Palmas (see above). Zidane says he is focusing on Ronaldo's positives, claiming the media "always focus on the negatives". "You (the media) always think of negative things and I think positive," said the Real boss, whose side lies third in the table after 11 rounds of fixtures, eight points behind leaders Barcelona. "Cristiano has given the pass for the goal (of Isco) and I can tell you that he is very pleased with it.” "He is happy to give a goal and it was a beautiful goal. We know that he likes to score and he is happiest when scoring.” "But we believe that he will make a difference. He is not doing it now by scoring in the league, but he is in the Champions League and he also does other things.” "He is helpful to the team and in the end, he will make a difference." Zidane also insists he did not hear any of the reported jeering from the Real fans towards his fellow Frenchman Karim Benzema. Benzema himself has scored twice this season in 12 appearances for Real. He told reporters: "I don't know, I didn't hear that. If you say so. At the end of the day, what we want to do is continue to work and do the right thing. We're talking of Benzema and Cristiano and it's true, I don't know how many goals they have."

A big local clash dominates this weekend’s Valencia regional third division fixtures as second-placed Orihuela make the short journey to take on tenth-placed Crevillente in a match that kicks-off this Sunday at 5.00 pm. Both teams go into the match in good heart, but Orihuela (celebrations pictured above) had to sweat it out until the 86th minute before José Carlos got their one-nil winner at early relegation candidates Almazora. Orihuela are now just a point behind leaders La Nucia, and they have Crevillente to thank for that, after they gained an excellent one-all draw on the northern Costa Blanca last Sunday. Pablo put Crevillente (pictured below) ahead in the first half, only for the home side to level it up shortly before the interval. Elche Ilicitano’s season is going from bad to worse as they lost one-nil at home to Bunol, and occupy second-bottom position in the table, with a trip to come to fellow-strugglers Paterna this Sunday lunchtime.

2017 Formula One world drivers champion Lewis Hamilton isn’t taking his foot off the gas at this Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix in Sao Paolo. The Mercedes driver wrapped up the fourth World Drivers' Championship of his career at the Mexican Grand Prix two weeks ago. And he can extend his lead over Sebastian Vettel at the top of the standings at the forthcoming Brazilian and Abu Dhabi races. Hamilton could of course opt to take it easy at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace and Yas Marina Circuit as the season draws to a close. He's warned his F1 rivals that he's in no mood to wind down though, despite his unassailable advantage. “The championship is done, but there are still two races to go and it is important to win those two races to solidify what I have worked on this year," Hamilton explained. "If I was to sit back, relax and let someone else take the glory - sure it would be nice for them - but that is not what I am about. "So, this weekend I am still faced with the same challenges. It is going to be close, but my goal remains the same. I want to continue to raise the bar." Hamilton is now level with Vettel and Alain Prost on four F1 titles. Next year he can draw level with Argentine great Juan Manuel Fangio on five. Michael Schumacher holds the record though, having topped the standings seven times in his career. He said he had not specifically set himself a clear goal of matching the legendary German's achievements. "I want to continue to raise the bar, pole positions, wins, I am still chasing Michael so I have a long way to go," he said. "It has never been my desire (to equal Schumacher)… my goal as a kid was always to do something like Ayrton (Senna, a three-time champion). I had never imagined what would be beyond that. "So to think I will have these four titles and I am still young and still have time ahead of me, the quest is to see exactly what I want.” Hamilton also said he will not let the controversy over his tax affairs "distract" him at the end of the season, as he is one of the high-profile figures whose tax situation came under scrutiny in the 'Paradise Papers'. He admitted in Sao Paulo on Wednesday that there was "a bit of a storm surrounding" him. But he added: "It doesn't distract me from my core values or what I am here to do - win the Brazilian Grand Prix."

Superlatives are never in short supply when talking about Spain’s MotoGP star Marc Marquez. In 2013, at just 20 years old, he became the youngest ever rider to win MotoGP's premier class. A year later he won the title again, with 13 race victories -- the most by any premier class rider -- beating a record held since 1997 by the legendary Mick Doohan. Then, in 2016, he became the youngest rider to win three MotoGP world titles. This weekend, in Valencia, the Repsol Honda rider will fight for a fourth premier class title, his sixth across the sport's classes. With a 21-point lead in the standings, he is hot favourite to take motorcycle racing's ultimate prize yet again. If all this sounds like plain sailing for the 24-yearold Catalan, this season has been anything but. Six races into the campaign he had managed just a single win -- at the Grand Prix of the Americas in Austin -and had failed to finish in two other races. "I knew we could have a difficult start [to the season]" Marquez told CNN. “We had made important changes to the engine and we needed time to understand how it worked, but I always try to be positive." From the sixth round onwards Marquez chalked up five race wins and four other podiums, moving up the standings before tightening his grip on the championship. "The improvements that we've made to the setup during the season helped me to feel so much more comfortable on the bike," he says. "And when you have good feelings, you have more confidence, and this allows you to push to the limit." The surprise this season has come in the form of Ducati and 31-year-old Andrea Dovizioso, who remains in contention ahead of this Sunday's final race. Marquez says the reinvigorated Italian outfit has become a formidable package. "We all knew that Ducati had a very good bike for certain circuits," he says. "But what has impressed us this year was that they took a big step in those circuits where they used to struggle more. This shows that they have been working hard to be in front. Lately, when you follow a Ducati, it's hard to see weak points." The gracious and unassuming Dovizioso is widely liked in the paddock, and that cordiality extends to Marquez. For fans a new face near the top of the standings has been a refreshing change, but Marquez says he pays little attention to who he is racing against.

MODEST MOYES

West Ham boss David Moyes claims the club are getting a “good manager” as he aims to "repair" his reputation at his new club. The former Everton and Manchester United manager has replaced Slaven Bilic, who was sacked on Monday. Moyes, 54, has been out of work since May, when he resigned as Sunderland boss after the club's relegation to the Championship, and was sacked as Real Sociedad coach. "It is good for West Ham, they are getting a good manager," he said.

JOSHUA’S RETORT

Britain's Anthony Joshua insists he is not "ducking" any fighter and says his heavyweight rivals are just "making noise" on social media. Joshua, 28, holds the WBA, IBF and IBO versions of the world title, with Deontay Wilder the WBC champion and Joseph Parker having the WBO belt. Wilder, 32, wants a unification bout, but no firm offer has been made. "There's one thing talking and acting, but negotiations don't happen over social media," said Joshua.

OLD RIVALRY RENEWED England continue their preparations for the 2018 World Cup by hosting two glamour friendlies in the next few days, with Brazil to come on Tuesday, but firstly it’s Germany at Wembley tonight (9.00 pm kick-off, live on ITV). The two rivals met in March (pictured above) as Lukas Podolski signed off from international duty with a stunner as Gareth Southgate began his permanent Three Lions contract with a 1-0 loss in March. Germany, ranked first in the current Fifa world rankings, won 10 and drew two of their next 12 games, winning the Confederations Cup and quali-

fying for next summer's World Cup with ease. England were down 1-0 in Germany's last visit to Wembley and have not bettered their rivals on home soil since 1975, but have won two of three away trips. Gareth Southgate has handed first senior call-ups to Tammy Abraham, Joe Gomez and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, with a stack of players withdrawing early in the week due to injury. Mario Gotze and Ilkay Gundogan have earned recalls to the Germany squad after missing most of 2017 through injury.

IT’S INTERNATIONALS TIME! Exeter's Henry Slade will start at inside centre for England against Argentina tomorrow at Twickenham (4.00 pm kickoff) in the first of the Autumn Internationals, with Lions duo Owen Farrell and Maro Itoje rested. Slade starts alongside Jonathan Joseph in the midfield, while in the absence of Itoje, George Kruis partners Courtney Lawes at lock. Elliot Daly has recovered from a knee injury to start on the wing. "This is our best 23 selected in what is our most important game this year," head coach Eddie Jones (pictured at training this week) said.

Meanwhile, Owen Williams will make his first Wales start at centre and Josh Navidi plays at open-side when they host Australia in Cardiff tomorrow (6.15 pm kick-off). Leigh Halfpenny is recalled at full-back as Liam Williams is on the wing. Wales head coach Warren Gatland said: "It's going to be a tough first up game, we know that and we need to be up and running.” First up in the Autumn Internationals will be tomorrow’s meeting between Scotland and Samoa at Murrayfield (3.00 pm kick-off), with Ireland entertaining South Africa in Dublin (6.05 pm kick-off).
