PARK GOES LEGAL

ne hundred and eighty four thousand euro of bills over materials for a suspended new park project in the El Chaparral and La Siesta area of Torrevieja have been put into the hands of a judge, after a complaint was received by the chief financial prosecutor in Alicante. The fourparty coalition running the authority claims that there were improprieties over orders and contracts under the previous Partido Popular-run council. Torrevieja’s employment councillor, Víctor Ferrández (pictured), speaking on Monday, said amongst the issues of concern were a falsified signature and that no formal contracts had been found for the project, with deals conducted via telephone and e-mail.

Forty-eight people from the Mediterraneo employment workshop had been involved with the 40-thousand-square-metre area, which should have been finished at the end of 2015, with skateboard facilities, and water fountains, as part of the reinvigoration of a former piece of wasteland. Before local elections in May 2015, the PP-run council claimed that the project was all running to schedule and would be finished before the end of that year, but was halted by the new coalition authority who said that invoices for materials were not produced and the project had run out of money. Last October, PP Councillor Carmen Gómez submitted a motion calling on the council to make provi-

on the work to be completed. Gómez said this week that the latest developments all pointed to the “incompetence” of the coalition-run council.

RECOVERING DIVERS

35-year-old female diver is lucky to be alive after being trapped for five hours in the caves of Isla Plana in the Mar Menor. She was rescued by a specialist Guardia Civil diving team, and transferred to Cartagena’s Santa Lucia Hospital for treatment in the facility’s hyperbaric chamber. The experienced Russian diver was discovered after an extensive rescue operation last Friday in a dangerous diving area which has seen five people lose their

lives since the early nineties. Further up the coast, a working diver operating in the seas of San Pedro del Pinatar had to be rushed by ambulance to the hyperbaric chamber at Cartagena, after suffering with suspected decompression. The man remained concious after last week’s incident, but was suffering pain in his legs, and after being taken by his work boat to San Pedro, he was transferred to the facility at Cartagena.

Two men, aged 53 and 23, have been arrested by the National Police in Alicante in connection with the suspected sexual abuse of a 15-year-old boy. One of the individuals ran an internet forum by which he befriended the teenager, and met him in secluded places around the area including a deserted building in San Vicente del Raspeig, he then got a second man involved to indulge in sadomasochistic acts with the child.

The National Police said that the 53-year-old forum manager sent thousands of messages to the youngster in order to build up trust with him, and to convince the boy to meet other men. He would then tell the teenager that he was “his master”, and offer him up as “a new dog” to potential abusers. The teenager told his parents what happened in November with the authorities launching an investigation.

Bank Cuts One of the most high profile banks in the area, Sabadell, is to close down 250 branches across the country this year, with 800 jobs set to be lost. Sabadell says that the move comes as more customers switch to using internet banking. The list of locations for the closures has not yet been declared, as Sabadell joins other banks in slashing the number of their branches.

A 51-year-old British man died on Wednesday after suffering multiple injuries in a climbing accident in the north of Alicante Province. The unnamed climber died after falling some 40 metres on a hill in the Polop area, in a section

known as Racó de Tovaines. He was with a companion (pictured on the extreme right) when a rope broke, and he called in emergency services who used a helicopter to take the 51-year-old to Benidorm fire station,

where he was treated by a SAMU ambulance team, who managed to stabilise his condition. Unfortunately, he suffered a cardiac arrest during his transfer to the Marina Baixa hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Record Breaker

Watchful Eye The Valencia region's traffic helicopter photographed over three thousand motorists committing offences last year, with 85 percent of drivers being caught speeding. The DGT Trafico chopper, using the Pegasus radar system, recorded over three thousand infractions, with dangerous overtaking and the illegal use of a mobile phone also being recorded by the eye in the sky.

Alicante-Elche airport has, as expected, recorded a record-breaking year for 2016, with the largest number of passengers using the facility since it opened in

1967. 12,344,945 people used the airport last year, some 16.7 percent more than in 2015, which in itself was a record. UK travellers led the list of international

passengers in 2016, standing at five point two million, with Germany way back in second at 877,000, followed by Holland on 770,000, and Norway on 754,000.

Gang Without Scruples

A five-man robbery gang who struck across Alicante Province has been arrested by the Guardia Civil, and put in front of a Torrevieja judge, with a Guardia spokesman saying the villains had “no scruples” at all in using violence. The gang were said to be planning a 100-thousand-euro heist after being tracked by the Guardia, who then moved in to end their activities once and for all.

The crooks often dressed up in police uniforms to trick their way into people’s houses, and one of their robbery targets was the home of a terminally ill 85-year-old woman, who was beaten up by them, as they invaded her property. A number of their victims needed hospital treatment after the bogus coppers manoeuvred their way into her homes to steal items. The gang of men, three

Romanians and two Spaniards, were picked up in Crevillente, Granja de Rocamora and Albatera, as well as further afield in Toledo. The Guardia Civil said it was one of the most violent gangs they had ever arrested in Alicante Province, adding that the men would also target other criminal gangs to steal the fruits of their illegal labours, often from drug trafficking.

Tourist Toppers

Spain smashed the record for visits from foreign tourists last year, with a total of 71 and a half million tourists, and that’s before figures for December are factored in! In November alone, four point one million foreign visitors arrived in Spain, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE). Up to the end of November, British tourists led the numbers with nearly 17 million visitors, representing 23.7 percent of the total and a year-on-year increase of 12.3 percent. French visitors were the second-largest national group, with 10.8 million travelling to Spain – up by seven percent on the same period in 2015 – followed by Germans, who totalled 10.7 million, up by just over

six percent. Catalunya continues to be the number one destination in Spain, accounting for 23.8 percent of the total number of foreign visitors standing at 17 million, rising by just under four per cent in a year, whilst the Valencia region, including the Costa Blanca, saw a bumper 17 percent hike, with seven point four million tourists. In keeping with the increased foreign visitors, spending by them in the Valencia region and Costa Blanca leapt up by 30 percent in November compared to the same month in 2015, whilst the overall Spanish figure went up by eight percent, with British spending nationally accounting for over 18 percent of the total.

Grab and Sell

Two Spaniards, aged 30 and 45, from San Pedro del Pinatar have been brought before a San Javier judge, after being accused of at least three home robberies in the San Pedro area. Both men had substantial criminal records. The Guardia Civil recovered jewellery, valued at over two and a half thousand euro, that was returned to their owners, with the two men selling on stolen items at pawn and gold shops.

Chopper Assist

A San Javier council employee has been arrested by the Guardia Civil for allegedly sexually abusing young girls at Santiago de la Ribera’s public library. The man, with the initials JJG and aged 50, lives in the Portman area of the municipality and has worked at the facility within the Santiago Civic Centre for around twenty years.

He was remanded into custody by a San Javier judge, who had three witness statements from youngsters to refer to. The allegations concern a series of incidents last year, where the Guardia Civil believe that he physically touched at least a dozen girls aged between 12 and 16, and he would also send naked photos of himself via

a mobile phone to some of them, hoping that they would also do the same. Investigators have been building a file of witness statements over the last few weeks, with San Javier mayor José Miguel Luengo saying that the council condemned the man’s actions if proven, and that the full force of the law would be used against him.

A 34-year-old San Pedro del Pinatar man had to be rescued by helicopter on Saturday, after he fell some 15 metres whilst climbing in the Rut area of the Sierra de Redovan. The climber suffered leg and hip injuries after the knot

in the safety rope came undone, with his fellow climber calling the emergency services. A helicopter took him down to a car park, where an ambulance transferred him to the Vega Baja Hospital in Orihuela.

A Torrevieja driver won't forget to put on his handbrake in future, after his van rolled down a street and straight into the waters of Acequión beach last Sunday. The Información newspaper reported that the Citroën Berlingo van glided down Calle Valencia and then some 10 metres across the sand into the sea (picture from Información). Nobody or nothing was in the van's way, as it made a smooth passage into the water, and there it stayed until it was hauled out by a council crane. The local police contacted the van owner to tell him about his vehicle's unexpected journey.

Lower Speed Seventy-kilometre-an-hour speed limits have been introduced in the area of all crossings on the CV-865 Santa Pola to Elche road. The previous limit was set at 90 kilometres an hour, and the new limit has been introduced recently on a black spot route that is especially congested during the summer tourist season. Twenty-four companies have submitted bids for a 380,000 euro tender to redesign the eight kilometre stretch of road, which would eventually see it upgraded to a dual carriageway.

Second Time Lucky

The National Police have arrested two people for smuggling in people illegally into Spain via the Cartegena area, using the coast of Cabo de Palos as their landing ground. The detentions stem back to a landing of Algerians last month who told the authorities who was behind the journey. The men were both 32year-old Algerians, who had been previously convicted and jailed for people smuggling back in 2012, and were deported from Spain in 2015, only to return to continue their financially lucrative illegal activities.

Artur’s Date

The trial of former Catalunya president Artur Mas over staging an “illegal” referendum over independence will begin on February 6th. Prosecutors accuse Mas of serious disobedience for organising the non-binding plebiscite on November 9th, 2014 despite it having been suspended by the national Constitutional court. Two former Catalunya government ministers who also go on trial as accomplices, namely former vice president Joana Ortega, and the ex-education minister Irene Rigau, who allowed public schools to host ballot stations for the referendum.

Catral Upgrade

A Catral park is to get a 60thousand-euro makeover, thanks to a grant from the Alicante Provincial Council. The work will be carried out at the Juan Pablo II park situated between Calles de La Cruz and El Molino, which will include the replacement of seating in the play area; a new and safer rubber surface for the area; as well as the laying of artificial grass.

Not Good Enough

A major Orihuela Costa group has slammed Orihuela council and the mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, for failing to deliver on a variety of promises for improvements to the area. La Federación de Asociaciones de Orihuela Costa (FAOC) claims that residents feel let down by the 18-month-old Partido Popularled administration after being led to believe early on that changes would be made.

FAOC has produced a laundry list of demands, including complaints over the state of refuse collection and cleaning services. Also, the non-repair of landslide areas at Cabo Roig and Cala Capitán; the need for extra floodwater protection; a call to improve the quality of road surfaces; and the cleaning up of algae-affected beaches at locations like La Zenia (pictured).

Pilar’s Bill

Wind Up Time

A major Murcia region devleopment, the Corvera Golf and Country Club, has gone into receivership, with hundreds of homes left unsold on the site. The resort, featuring a golf course designed by Spanish star José María Olazábal, was built 10 years ago next to the stillunopened Corvera

International Airport. A group of 20 property owners, many of whom are said to be British, went to court last year to force the resort promoter Antonio Rizo, to be declared insolvent. A court has now put in place a timetable for creditors to submit figures to the official receiver over sums

they are owed, after the complex became a victim of the Spanish property bubble bursting during the recession. The news over the Corvera Club comes on the back of another major operator in Murcia, the Polaris group, seeing a judge putting 11 of their companies into voluntary bankruptcy.

Monkey Business A monkey has been quarantined in Alicante Province after initial tests showed that it may be carrying the HIV virus, after it had been brought in illegally into the country by an animal trafficking ring. Further tests will be conducted after the Guinea Green monkey was seized in an operation last autumn, with a further 42 unaccounted for. The animal is in quaran-

Pilar de la Horadada council says it will cost over half a million euro to repair the damage caused by last month's storms. This takes into account damage to street lights fencing, roads, and footpaths, as well as sand erosion on the beaches, with over 100 thou-

sand euro needed for repairs to the municipality's rural roads. The authority says that it would cost over six million euro for necessary preventative measures and structures to be put into place to prevent a repeat of December's flood damage.

Great Progress Twins born prematurely in November to a 40-year-old British woman from the Northern Costa Blanca have been released from the neonatal unit of Alicante General Hospital, with the hope that they can come home to Jávea at the end of the month. Arlene Drysdale gave birth to Valentina and Isabelle at the Jávea health centre just 26 weeks into her pregnancy with the youngsters, who weighed just 700 grams each. Proud dad Craig Drysdale praised the exceptional medical care given to the twins, who now weigh in at two kilos and one and a half kilos, saying that they have made great progress. Isabella is sched-

uled to have a hernia operation a week on Monday.

tine at a facility in Villena, as part of a group of 20 who have all been examined and tested there, and at the Noah's Ark centre in Alicante. Seven people were arrested in Alicante, Murcia, and Sevilla as part of Operation Titsali in October, with the Guardia Civil saying that an Alicante woman was detained in Murcia last week for trying to sell two monkeys via the internet.

Merry-Go-Round It's almost certainly allchange for Almoradi council this Monday, with the Partido Popular set to regain control of the authority, which it lost in the May 2015 local elections. The right-ofcentre PP, with the help of the Ciudadanos centrist party (who had supported the current government team), has put forward a censure motion over the socialist PSOE-led administration under Mayor Jaime Perez, which has been supported by the United Left (IU) party, and which under a pact, would have seen the IU's María Jesús Pérez become mayor this spring. With Ciudadanos now switching their support to the PP camp, a new coalition led by María Gómez (pictured left), has formed and they have enough votes to unseat Perez, with Gómez taking the top job. In an interview with the Información newspaper, she claims that the council has been "mired in baseless

smearing of the opposition for political gain". She said her priorities would be to put a budget in place and to improve cleaning services. Gómez though, is being investigated by an Orihuela court over fraud allegations amounting to 54 thousand euro, when she was finance councillor in the previous PP administration. The deal

between the PP and Ciudadanos is that if the fraud investigation goes to trial, where she would have to testify in front of a judge, Gómez would stand aside as mayor in favour of Ciudadonos leader María Quiles (pictured right) for the rest of the term. The next elections are due in May 2019.

Bollards Banished Controversial bollards on Torrevieja’s Calle Caballero de Rodas and in adjacent streets that saw mayor, José Manuel Dolón, suffer a series of punctured tyres in 2015, are being removed by the council. The bollards were put in place seven years ago by the previous Partido Popular administration, with a number of vehicles suffering punctures and damage in the area, as well as pedestrians tripping over them. Dolón had previously claimed that the bollards did not meet the “proper legal requirements” and were an “outrage of the previous PP council.” The bollards were part of

Man In A Suitcase

Guards on the border of Ceuta, Spain's enclave in North Africa, recently detained one Moroccan suspected of attempting to smuggle migrants concealed in a suitcase and another suspected of hiding migrants in a car. Guardia Civil officers found a 19-year-old migrant from Gabon hidden in a suitcase pushed on a trolley by a woman who tried to cross the land border from Morocco. The 22-year-old Moroccan woman raised suspicions by trying to avoid security checks. When the Guardia asked her to open the luggage, they found the man curled up in the poorly ventilated space. Officers said the man received immediate medical attention.

tive of a now-former PP councillor, with the full project suspended by court order amidst legal wrangling.

Record Ryanair

Budget airline Ryanair carried a record 117 million passengers in 2016, an increase of 15 percent on the previous year, according to the company. The carrier, which provides services to and from Alicante-Elche and San Javier airports, beat its previous record of 101.4 million passengers set in 2015, thanks to what it said was a combination of low fares, new routes and bases and improved customer service. Britain accounts for 26 percent of Ryanair revenues and following the vote to

leave the European Union last year, the airline expects growth in that country to slow. "Following the Brexit referendum result, we will pivot growth away from the UK in 2017, and this capacity will be allocated to European Union airports instead," a spokesman said. "Our growth rate in the UK will reduce from 15 percent in 2016 to six percent this year." The company said it expected to carry 119 million customers in the 2017 financial year, and 130 million the following year.

Fare Freeze

The Spanish rail board RENFE has frozen fares for suburban lines and mediumdistance inter-provincial train journeys. The pledge for 2017 does not cover the company’s high-speed AVE services.

A recently renovated Torrevieja area pizza parlour was burnt to a crisp after a fire last week. The blaze broke out at the Don Camilo pizzeria in Los Balcones, with the outbreak spreading quickly because of the high

amount of wood in the building. The fire was brought under control by crews from Almoradi and Torrevieja, and did not spread to adjoining properties, with nobody being injured.

Happy New Year

Illegal Cutting

The National Police have arrested a bogus doctor who performed illegal home circumcisions in the Cartagena area and across Spain. The 40-year-old fake Moroccan medic and his two assistants charged 150 euro a time for the procedure. They ran an unlicensed clinic in the San Antón area of Cartagena, with one operation in Murcia City going so badly wrong that a baby had to be admitted to hospital. One of the fake doctor’s

assistants operated on the three-month-old boy who was rushed to intensive care in an unconscious state and suffering from fits. It is believed he was poisoned when the anaesthesia used reached a toxic amount. The National Police raided the illegal clinic in Cartagena and discovered medical equipment which was used to perform around 50 circumcisions a week, with a range of medicines, many of which were out of date, some of which are even

banned in Spain. The procedures were carried out mostly in private homes with the minimum of sterilisation. "Medical instruments were sterilised in dishwashers," said the National Police. "There were no pre-op tests and no prior consultations about possible allergies or adverse reactions.” “If people couldn't get to the clinic, they would travel to provinces anywhere in Spain, using a mobile stretcher on which to perform the operations."

A 37-year-old man appeared in court last week charged with being so drunk and abusive on a New Year’s Eve flight to AlicanteElche airport that the captain had to fly the plane back to Glasgow. James McMahon was kept in police cells for two nights before being bailed at Paisley Sheriff Court, ahead of his trial in April. McMahon pled not guilty

to two charges of being drunk and abusive which saw the Easyjet flight return to Glasgow Airport where he was arrested. The court report says that McMahon denies “interfering with the performance by a member of the crew of the aircraft” by repeatedly shouting and swearing and refusing “to desist or moderate [his] behaviour”.

More New Wheels Spanish new car sales went up by over nine percent year-on-year in December to 96,886, a slight slowdown from the pace of growth recorded a month earlier. association, Anfac. 2016 saw new car sales up by 11 percent on the 2015 figures with Anfac saying part of the rise was stimulated by the rental car industry, who were buying more vehicles to serve the big rises in foreign tourists. The Anfac figures showed a 10 percent increase in new car sales last year in the Valencia and Murcia regions.

Rescued Trio

A donkey cruelly hobbled and left to stand alone without shelter throughout last month’s torrential rainfall is now safe from harm thanks to the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre. The Rojales sanctuary rescued the donkey, named Dulce Dawn, in a joint operation with San Javier police. Dulce Dawn had been found crudely tied to prevent her from moving, with rope wrapping from her head to her front and back legs. Twenty-four hours later, Centre co-founders Sue and Rod Weeding were again called out by San Javier police to rescue another two ponies found wandering a road in the same area. Veterinary inspections later revealed the stallion, believed to be about 14 years old, has one deformed hoof, while the mare, about 7 years old, is malnourished and could be in foal.

Keep On Spangling

2017 looks like being another busy year for the Mar Menor-based Spangles Ladies Harmony Chorus, who, after a packed holiday season of festive fund raising, went back into rehearsals yesterday at Las Claras, Los Narejos, Los Alcázares, as they get ready to compete in the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers’ (SABS) national chorus contest in April. They will also be representing

SABS at the European contest in the UK in October. If you are looking to meet new people, can sing a bit and fancy joining a champion chorus, then pop along to Las Claras for the Spangles Thursday morning rehearsals, from 10.00 am. For more details, or perhaps to book Spangles for an event, then phone Lyn on 968 574 987 or go to the website, www.spangleschorus.com.

Open Meeting

If you have doubts about your own drinking behaviour or are affected by that of a person close to you, then you can along to an open meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous in Torrevieja on Friday January 20th or you can always ring the Costa Blanca South helpline on 625 912 078. The meeting starts at 1.00 pm and will be held at Calle San Miguel de Salinas 2 (Corner of Calle Santomera) in the Acequioñ area of Torrevieja. More details

Masons Help Kids

The Freemasons of Murcia made sure that youngsters in the Los Alcázares area didn’t miss out on their usual quota of Three Kings presents last week, after last month’s serious flooding. Two English masons lodges, Luz de Murcia and Sierra Espuñas joined forces with their Murcia region Spanish counterparts to get presents for more

than 40 children in Los Alcázares. Keith Willis (pictured with the presents) from the Luz de Murcia lodge liased with the local council to make sure that the gifts reached the most needy. If you live in the Murcia region and are a Mason, or are interested in becoming one, then get in touch with the Provincial Secretary on 968 971 894.

Hardy Dippers

Brave regulars from the Blarneystone Bar in Zeniamar organised the perfect way to start the New Year, with a cold dip in the sea to boost the coffers of the cancer charity fundraisers, Maria and the Pink Ladies. Fourteen swimmers took the plunge into the icey

waters, and it’s hoped that around two and half thousand euro will be raised from sponsorship and money collected on the day, as well as a raffle, which will be held during a special presentation night at the Blarneystone on Thursday January 26th.

Meadows Memories A former art teacher who spends most of his year living in the Los Alcázares area has been putting pen to paper over the last year, and has just had his second book published, as part of a trilogy. John Meadows wrote a book, which came out last March, called ‘You Did Say ‘Have Another Sausage?’ a collection of light-hearted, amusing, anecdotal true stories gleaned from a wealth of material gathered over many years. He’s not hung around as the follow-up volume has come out recently, called ‘Ten Camels For My Wife’, which features further anecdotes collected on a round-the-world trip back in the seventies. This included a few months overland by bus to Kathmandu in Nepal, travelling through Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and India. John was able to visit places

Fabulous Footwork

The Footwork Dance show, “Roll Out The Dance Floor” attracted a sellout audience last month at the Los Montesinos music school. The audience was thrilled by a show, full of well- executed routines including tap, ballet, modern dance, jazz and lyrical acrobatics. Students of all ages took part in the show and there were many outstanding performances, confirming the high standard achieved by

the students during the year in obtaining a 100 percent pass rate in the exams they have taken. A donation from the ticket sales from the last two Footwork productions will be made to the Los Montesinos social services department to help buy them some wheelchairs. Footwork also made donations to the Torrevieja homeless charity, Reach Out, and to Galgos del Sol to help raise funds for mistreated dogs in the region.

which are now inaccessible, such as Aleppo and Damascus, and there are chapters on the Far East and some amusing stories of the time he spent teaching in Australia. This is followed by travels through the South Pacific, including Tahiti and Easter Island, concluding with a journey through South America. With a third volume to come this year, both of John’s books are available from Amazon in paperback and e-book formats.

If you are suffering from some post-festive blues, then you can have a good night out and laugh at the Smile Charity Group’s latest original comedy, ‘Mind Me Ghoulies’! It’s an alternative seasonal ghost story that will hopefully help you start the year off with a good giggle, and at the same time help to raise money for those in need on the Costa Blanca. Tickets are available from any of the venues listed below, or from The Card Place, Benimar and The Post Room, Benijófar, or by calling 966 712 382 or 665 222 974. meal, with the Benijófar performance being a show only, at six euro. Friday January 13th:Casa Ventura, San Luis, Torrevieja. Wednesday January 18th:- Benijófar Theatre. Friday January 20th:- The Club, Quesada.

Music Of The Lord The Melody Makers International will be paying tribute to the great musical lord, Andrew Lloyd Webber at the end of the month with two concerts at the Orihuela Costa Resort Hotel in La Zenia on Saturday January 28th. Proceeds will go to the Debra Butterfly Children charity. There will be two shows

on the day, with a matinee performance at 2.00 pm and the evening performance at 8.00 pm. Tickets are available from La Ponderosa Gift Shop at La Zenia; also at the Card Place at both Punta Prima and Benimar. Further tickets can be obtained from the Debra Charity Shops at both San Fulgencio and Quesada.

The show will include songs from musicals like Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Cats, Starlight Express, Evita, and the Phantom of the Opera. Local soloists and the choir will be accompanied by a professional band flown in from the UK for the weekend.

Cats can’t tell us when something is wrong, and they are masters at hiding signs of illness. This is a throwback to their wild origins: in the wild, a sick animal easily becomes prey. Because of this, it’s up to cat guardians to know what to look for. Any changes in your cat’s normal routine, behaviour and attitude could be the first indicator that something is wrong. Cat owners often don’t realize that problems can develop slowly and cats don’t show symptoms until a disease is already advanced. Early detection is important: there’s a much better chance that the problem can be treated successfully, and you’ll also save yourself money by avoiding costly vet fees for treating an advanced illness. The following ten signs may be cause for concern: 1. CHANGE IN APPETITE Eating too much or too little can potentially be the signs of a disease. If you notice a change either way, you should notify your vet. There are countless diseases that can cause overeating or losing one’s appetite. You vet’s job will be to investigate why. This typically starts with blood work, X-rays and/or ultrasound. 2. BAD BREATH A foul smell coming from your kitty’s mouth can mean gum disease or tooth decay. Brushing your cat’s teeth is a good way to decrease those risks. Imagine if you went 5, 10 or 15 years without brushing your teeth! In addition, breath that smells like ammonia can be a sign of kidney disease. 3. LOWER ENERGY If your cat suddenly refuses to engage in normal play behaviour or seems lethargic, this could be a sign that she’s not feeling well. 4. INCREASED THIRST

Increased water intake can be a sign of kidney disease or diabetes. An increase in the amount of urine output, or an increase in the frequency of urination, can be a sign of urinary tract disease. 5. BEHAVIOUR CHANGES If your cat starts to hide, refuses to play, or becomes aggressive for no apparent reason, these changes may be caused by a physical problem. 6. BEING SICK While a single bout of vomiting or diarrhoea may not be a cause for concern, ongoing vomiting and diarrhoea can be sign of a serious gastro-intestinal problem. 7. LITTERBOX HASSLE If your cat all of a sudden refuses to use the litter box, ruling out a medical issue should always be your first step. 8. WEIGHT CHANGES Sudden weight loss or weight gain is always a cause for concern and requires veterinary attention. 9. A POOR COAT A poor hair coat can be caused by any number of conditions. Excessive scratching and grooming may be caused by allergies or parasites. 10. STRANGE VOCALS If your cat starts to vocalize in ways that are not normal for her, this can be a cause for concern. AND FINALLY:- Don’t dismiss any subtle change to your cat’s normal pattern. Schedule an exam with your cat’s veterinarian at your earliest convenience if you notice any of these signs. Incidentally if you are a dog owner, then a number of these behavioural changes apply to your pet as well, If in doubt, then get your cat or dog checked out.

Domestic Rise

Caravan and campsites across Alicante Province saw an 11 percent rise in overnight stays compared to figures for 2015. Juan Delgado of the Alicante Camping Association said that the increased figures include more Spaniards staying on sites in caravans or cabins/bungalows during the off-peak months. He says a key factor has been people choosing to stay

Cartagena’s local police have rounded up a record seizure of almost 600 counterfeit items that were set to be sold illegally around the area. Clothing items led the list of goods that were taken from an unnamed location in the historical quarter of the city. Of greatest concern was the impounding of 29 toy swords that had a laser in them, which could easily cause blindness if aimed at a human eye.

Delgado added that overnight stays had risen by 46 percent in the last decade, with Patrick Le Metayer of La Marina camping saying he had certainly noted increased demand from the domestic market looking for accommodation, be it a caravan or a cabin.

Falling Figures The number of unemployed people in Spain fell by 390,534 to 3,702,974 in 2016, a reduction of 9.54 percent, according to figures published by the employment ministry. The drop is the highest in Spain since 1996 in absolute terms and since 1999 in relative terms and is the fourth year in row that the number of people out of work has fallen, following falls of 147,385 in 2013, 253,627 in 2014, and 354,203 in 2015. December saw

unemployment reduced by 86,849, thanks mainly to the number of short-term contracts signed over the Christmas period. Locally, there were just over 170 thousand people out of work in Alicante Province at the end of 2016, a fall of almost eight percent over the year. Whilst there was a nine percent drop in the Murcia region, with over 117 thousand registered last month as unemployed.

Nine people have been arrested by the National Police, after submitting young migrant women to voodoo rituals before being forced into prostitution in Benidorm and Bilbao. Authorities say that the trafficking group used illegal migration routes to smuggle young girls from their home countries to Spain, with the gang headed by three Nigerian women. Seven women were “rescued after the police operation. The victims, all poor,

were approached 'very young' with promises of a good job in Europe, and they were then submitted to voodoo rituals threatening serious consequences if they disobeyed orders, before undertaking their journey to Spain via Niger and Libya. After arriving in Spain, they were instructed to ask for asylum so as to avoid potential deportation. They were told they owed the organisation around 40 thousand euro, and forced into prostitution in Bilbao

and Benidorm. A National Police spokesman said: 'They had to go and prostitute themselves every day and couldn't come back until the early hours of the morning, after more than 14 hours... regardless of the inclement weather or their own health.' Such was the fear of their bosses, that one of the victims who fell pregnant aborted straightaway and continued to prostitute herself so that they would never know.

Lamb curry with tomatoes, garlic and garam masala INGREDIENTS 1 kg leg of lamb on the bone, cut to bite-sized pieces 5 garlic cloves, roughly chopped 3.5cm piece ginger, roughly chopped 4 tbsp vegetable oil 500g tomato, thinly sliced 200g onions, thinly sliced 1 heaped tsp kashmiri chilli powder (or mild paprika) Salt to taste 2 tbsp Greek yogurt 2 tsp coriander powder Pinch turmeric powder 1 tsp cumin seeds, coarsely crushed ½ tsp black pepper, coarsely crushed Pinch garam masala powder 2 green chillies, slit lengthwise (optional) 1 tbsp chopped coriander leaves 1 tbsp chopped mint leaves ginger slivers for garnish METHOD Place the lamb in a mixing bowl. Crush the garlic and ginger to a coarse paste and add to the lamb. Stir well and set aside for an hour or overnight if you

have time. In a large heavy-bottomed saucepan or kadhai heat the oil on a medium heat. Add the marinated lamb chunks and fry for 5-6 minutes stirring well to seal. Add the sliced tomatoes and cook for a further 8 minutes. The tomatoes will begin to break down and soften. Add the onions and chilli powder and stir well cooking for a further 3 minutes. Season to taste. Now lower the heat and simmer with the lid on for 30 minutes stirring half way through the cooking process. Add the Greek yogurt to a small bowl and mix in the ground spices: coriander, turmeric, cumin and black pepper. Add this to the karahi gosht and stir well, making sure the yogurt does not split. Continue simmering on a low heat and with the lid half over the pan, cook the lamb for 45-50 minutes, stirring halfway through cooking, making sure it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan. Turn the heat off and while it’s still warm add the garam masala, chillies if using, coriander, mint and ginger slivers.

Creamy chicken, ham and leek pie Ingredients For the filling 450ml/16fl oz chicken stock 3 chicken breasts, skinned 75g/3oz butter 2 leeks, trimmed and cut into 1cm/½in slices 2 garlic cloves, crushed 50g/2oz plain flour 200ml/7fl oz milk 2-3 tbsp white wine (optional) 150ml/3fl oz double cream 150g/5oz piece thickly carved ham, cut into 2cm chunks sea salt flakes freshly ground black pepper For the pastry 350g/12oz plain flour 200g/7oz butter 1 free-range egg beaten with 1 tbsp cold water, plus 1 freerange egg, beaten, to glaze Method Heat the chicken stock in a lidded saucepan. Add the chicken breast and bring to a low simmer. Cover with a lid and cook for 10 minutes. Remove the chicken breasts from the water with tongs and place on a plate. Pour the cooking liquor into a large jug. Melt 25g/1oz of the butter in a large heavy-based saucepan over a low heat. Stir in the leeks and fry gently for two minutes, stirring occasionally until just softened. Add the garlic and cook for a further minute. Add the remaining butter and stir in the flour as soon as the butter has melted. Cook for 30 seconds, stirring constantly. Slowly pour the milk into the pan, just a little at a time, stirring well between each adding. Gradually add 250ml/10fl oz of the reserved stock and the wine, if using, stirring until the sauce is smooth and thickened slightly. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 3 minutes. Season the mixture, to taste, with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Remove from the heat and stir in the cream. Pour into a large bowl and cover the surface of the sauce with cling ilm to prevent a skin forming. Set aside to cool. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Put a baking tray in

the oven to heat. For the pastry, put the flour and butter in a food processor and blend on the pulse setting until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. With the motor running, add the beaten egg and water and blend until the mixture forms a ball. Portion off 250g/10oz of pastry for the lid. Roll the remaining pastry out on a lightly floured surface, turning the pastry frequently until around 5mm/¼in thick and 4cm/1½in larger than the pie dish. Lift the pastry over the rolling pin and place it gently into the pie dish. Press the pastry firmly up the sides, making sure there are no air bubbles. Leave the excess pastry overhanging the sides.

Cut the chicken breasts into 3cm/1¼in pieces. Stir the chicken, ham and leeks into the cooled sauce. Pour the chicken filling into the pie dish. Brush the rim of the dish with beaten egg. Roll out the reserved pastry for the lid. Cover the pie with the pastry lid and press the edges together firmly to seal. Trim any excess pastry. Make a small hole in the centre of the pie with the tip of a knife. Glaze the top of the pie with beaten egg. Bake on the preheated tray in the centre of the oven for 35-40 minutes or until the pie is golden-brown all over and the filling is piping hot.

Shakshuka This baked egg recipe works just as well for brunch as it does dinner.

Ingredients 3 tbsp olive oil 2 large onions, thinly sliced 2 red peppers, cut into long slices 2 green peppers, cut into long slices 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped ½ tsp cumin seeds ½ tsp caraway seeds ½ tsp cayenne pepper 1 tbsp tomato or red pepper purée 2 x 400g tins tomatoes 1 small bunch fresh coriander, roughly chopped 1 small bunch fresh parsley, roughly chopped 8 free-range eggs 85g/3oz feta, crumbled

8 tbsp thick natural yoghurt or labneh salt and freshly ground black pepper Method Heat the olive oil in a large, lidded frying pan. Add the onions and peppers and season with salt and pepper. Cook on a medium heat until just softened. Add the garlic and cook for a further 2 minutes. Sprinkle in the cumin and caraway seeds and the cayenne pepper. Stir in the tomato or red pepper purée and cook for a couple more minutes until the paste starts to separate. Add the tomatoes with a splash of water. Simmer for 10 minutes, uncovered,

until reduced a little. Taste after 5 minutes and add a little sugar if you think the tomatoes need it. Keep an eye on the texture – you don’t want it runny, but it mustn’t get too dry, either. Add another splash of water if necessary. When the sauce is reduced, stir in the herbs. Make 8 small wells in the sauce. Break an egg into a cup and drop carefully into a well, repeat with the remaining eggs. Cook for a few more minutes until the whites are just set and the yolks are still runny. Sprinkle over the crumbled feta. Serve with yogurt or labneh on the side.

Avoid afternoon coffee, over-50s advised People over 50 are being advised to avoid caffeine after lunchtime to get a good night's sleep. A report for the charity Age UK says sleeping soundly gets harder as we age, but getting enough rest is important to keep mentally sharp. It recommends older people get seven to eight hours of sleep a night and gives tips on how to achieve this. As well as avoiding tea and coffee, older people should keep daytime naps to shorter than half an hour. Other tips include: Get up at the same time every day Expose yourself to natural sunlight during the daytime Don't drink alcohol to help you to sleep Try to eat dinner about three hours before going to bed Don't look at an electronic screen of any kind after you get into bed - tablet, phone, laptop, etc Avoid using over-the-counter sleep preparations Wear socks to keep your feet warm in bed Don't sleep with pets in the bedroom Avoid arguments with spouse or partner before going to bed The report was written by the Global Council on Brain Health report - a panel of experts convened by Age UK and the American Association of Retired Persons. As we age, our sleep patterns change, so we become more vulnerable to waking during the night and earlier in the morning. This is important because, in the long term, poor sleep increases the risk of heart disease, obesity and diabetes, say the report authors. James Goodwin from Age UK said: "Sleeping is something we all tend to take for granted, but we really have to wise up to the fact that getting the right amount of good sleep is crucial as we age, helping to protect us from all kinds of problems that can affect our brains as well as our bodies. "The message is that in order to stay mentally sharp in

later life - something we all care passionately about - take care of your sleep." For those struggling with their sleep, the report says: If you have trouble sleeping at night, but doze off in the evening in front of the TV, trying going to bed a bit earlier or get off the sofa and walk around for a bit to keep alert. If you go to bed but can't nod off, get up for a while and

find another quiet place to relax until you feel sleepy enough to try going back to bed. If you worry a lot while in bed, schedule about 15 minutes each morning as your "worry time" rather than becoming stressed at night. It is worth chatting to your doctor if you have poor sleep and it is having a negative impact on your life.

Alcohol flips brain into hungry mode Alcohol switches the brain into starvation mode, increasing hunger and appetite, scientists have discovered. In tests on mice, alcohol activated the brain signals that tell the body to eat more food. The UK researchers, who report their findings in the journal Nature Communications, believe the same is probably true in humans. It would explain why many people say they eat more when they have had a few drinks. Rather than loss of restraint, it is a neuronal response, the Francis Crick Institute team says. The mice were given generous doses of alcohol for three days - a dose being equivalent to around 18 units or a bottle-and-a-half of wine for a person. The alcohol caused increased activity in neurons called AGRP. These are the neurons that are fired when the body experiences starvation. The mice ate more than normal too. When the researchers repeated the experiment but

blocked the neurons with a drug, the mice did not eat as much which, the researchers say, suggests that AGRP neurons are responsible for the alcohol-induced eating. Alcohol itself contains lots of calories. A large glass of wine, for example, can contain as many as a doughnut. The study authors, Denis Burdakov and colleagues, say understanding how alcohol changes the body and our behaviour could help with managing obesity. Around two-thirds of adults in the UK are overweight or obese. Prof Sir Ian Gilmore, from Alcohol Health Alliance UK, said people should be made aware of the impact alcohol can have on how much they eat and what they eat, along with the associated health risks. "Alcohol is responsible for over 60 illnesses and conditions on its own, and drinkers place themselves at even greater risk when their drinking is combined with overeating: especially because when people drink they are more likely to make less healthy food choices.

"Alcohol and obesity cause 90% of liver deaths and alcohol is twice as toxic to the liver in very obese patients."

How important is salt in your diet? Your body cannot survive without salt. To a great extent, salt played a key role in shaping human civilisation. In days gone by, before fridges, salt was the best natural preservative for meat, fish and many other foods. Salt was used to pay soldiers in Roman times. The word salary is rooted in the Spanish word for salt, ‘sal’. Salt is heavily used in food processing to enhance the taste and prolong the shelf life of processed food. The chemical name for salt is sodium chloride, and salt is the largest contributor of sodium to the body. Sodium is the most abundant mineral in the body and plays a role in many vital chemical reactions such as the transmission of

review all studies relating to the health effects of sodium. Their 150-page report concluded that the current evidence linking salt to high blood pressure lacks validity. On the contrary, the Institute found that people who consumed very little salt suffered more health problems. Too much salt, like too much of any other mineral, is detrimental to health, but not the amount used to flavour food. When it comes to salt, sea salt is certainly better than table salt because it contains many more minerals. signals through nerves and contraction of muscles. However, in more recent times, salt has been

demonised, especially as a contributor to hypertension and heart disease. People suffering from high

blood pressure are advised by their doctors to cut out salt from their diet. But how beneficial is this recommendation?

Recently The Institute of Medicine (IOM) – a wellknown international organisation was commissioned to

Reports of a 'wrinkle cure' look a little saggy "Wrinkles could be a thing of the past as scientists find a way to regenerate fatty cells," say recent reports. Research involving mice suggests a protein called bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) could repair skin damaged by scarring or ageing by stimulating the production of fat cells (adipocytes). The research team wanted to investigate why mice that

experience skin damage are able to produce new fat cells during the healing process. The same is not true for humans where injury often results in some degree of scarring. Human skin also loses its elasticity over time – leading to wrinkles – due to the gradual loss of adipocytes. The researchers found the answer appears to lie in hair

follicles. When the mouse wounds heal, they produce new hair follicles (tiny sacs in the surface of the skin that anchor individual hairs). This in turn triggers the production of BMP, which appears to cause damaged skin tissue to be "reprogrammed" into fat cells. The researchers hope their findings may be used to

develop new treatments to treat scar tissue in humans, and possibly (and likely much more profitably) reverse the signs of ageing. But exactly how you safely replicate biological processes innate to rodents in humans is just one of the many wrinkles that will need to be ironed out before we can realistically start talking about an "elixir of youth".

Fashion

Let´s Go Back to the 80s

Custom wigs, the 80s, trouser suits and real-sized models, that´s what the experts are predicting will lead the way in this year´s fashion, with soft ruffles and less make-up being added to the 2017 mix. The first order of business is ushering in the new power suit, said Sidney Morgan-Petro, retail editor for WGSN, a global trend-forecasting firm. The rise of athleisure-inspired comfort combined with the modern working woman's desire to appear powerful and grounded, as well as ethereal and feminine, is behind this new look. "We will borrow the oversize shapes of the '80s but soften the lines. We will swap the power pumps for a sensible heel," Morgan-Petro said. "Oh, and did I mention, stirrup pants are making a comeback?" Women's wear "There will be an insane amount of stripes," said Ann Gitter, owner of Center City boutique Knit Wit, "not just the thin ones, but lots of bold ones - vertical and horizontal combined, black and white, blue and white. Men's shirting elements will continue to up the ante in womenswear." Of course, this onslaught of menswear detailing will need to be softened with a feminine touch, said Mary K. Dougherty, owner of Nicole Miller Boutique in Center City and Manayunk. "There will be ruffles and ribbons, interesting necklines, knife pleats. It's all about the flirty, fun, whimsical, and soft aesthetic." The light pinks and neutrals of ballerina slippers will take on a harder edge, especially in women's shoes this season, and especially on the reigning shoe of the moment - the slip-on Oxford, said Elena Brennan, owner of Fabric Row's Bus Stop Boutique. Patchwork, especially on denim, such as Mavi jeans, will be trendy this spring, says Bloomingdale's Amanda Hill. Patchwork, especially on denim, will be a trendy girl's best friend this spring, said Amanda Hill, public relations manager at Bloomingdale's in Willow Grove and King of Prussia. "The eye-catching bottoms can be paired with a simple T or off-theshoulder blouse." "Fashion is moving quickly toward ethnic prints and politically charged messaging," said Syreeta Scott, one of the co-owners of the Sable Collective in North Philadelphia. That means you should expect to see more women - on the streets and the red carpet - with African wax prints, long braids, and burgundy or chocolate lips. "In other words," Scott said, "Kim Kardashian is out, and Solange Knowles is in." At the gym, it's all about inspirational, graphic tanks, said Sue Pinto, apparel buyer for Chestnut Hill activewear boutique Rebel. Or, said her partner Holly McKay, shredded leggings.

"Just as your jeans are torn and tattered, high-performance leggings are taking us from the studio to the street. Bomber jacket optional." Beauty "The shag is back," said Roxy Brennan, stylist at the Rittenhouse Spa & Club, Hair by Paul LaBrecque. "We are talking long, short, with or without bangs." The cut also will pop in soft pink and green pastels. First, there was rainbow hair. Now, it's rainbow lashes. "Lash extensions have been around for a while," said Deneen Marcel, owner of her eponymous lash salon in Center City and Bryn Mawr. "Electric blue, hunter green, and chestnut brown lashes replace colored mascara." You can still have the look with colored mascara, though. Rittenhouse Square make-up artist Ursula Augustine is sure peach will be a go-to shade for spring. "The Pantone color is green, but that green needs an eyeliner, eye shadow, or mascara to complement it. That's where peach and all related coral tones come in." Shekeya Miles, stylist for Atlanta housewife Porscha Williams and rapper Trina, says custom wigs are what's up. Look closely at model Kylie Jenner's hair, she said. "They are a great way to switch color and hairstyles without making permanent changes to your hair," added Miles, owner of Crazy Hands, a Southwest Philadelphia salon. Accessories Bela Shehu, owner and creative director of NINObrand, knows chokers have officially dethroned the bib as the ultimate statement necklace. "It will be an essential part of the 2017 uniform," she said. "Stack them up for a stronger effect." In eyewear, clear frames are replacing the tortoiseshells, said Cliff Balter, owner of Philly EyeWorks. But the hipster shapes - like cat-eyes, squares, and ovals - will remain eyewear musts. Menswear "In shoes, expect to see bolder color palettes," said Steve Jamison, owner of Blue Sole Shoes. During economic upswings, men tend to feel more financially secure, so that propels more fashion-forward looks, he said. "Look for hand-painted Oxfords in solid blues, greens, and eggplants. Patchwork high-tops are a trend. And tie-up alligators in navies and browns that shine with sheen are also a great 2017 option. And don't forget the socks." "I believe we'll see men looking for ways to spruce up their suit blazers and denim jackets with not only lapel pins, tieclips, and pocket squares, but brooches," said Ike Ewell, founder of Huntrs, a Mount Airy online men's consignment shop.

"Men's suiting will swing toward double-breasted jackets," said Alex Gushner, men's buyer at Boyds Philadelphia. "But this time, he will pair the blazer with trim pants that feature a larger, 21/2-inch cuff." Vests will be trending, says Brian Lipstein of Henry A. Davidsen, and they won't always match suits. Brian Lipstein of Center City's Henry A. Davidsen expects to see men gravitate toward vests. And they won't just match their suits. "The fun," Lipstein said, "will be in the contrast."

Biar, a natural and monumental paradise in inland Alicante

The town of Biar is a beautiful village in Alicante that is integrated in its surroundings. Perched atop the rocky crags of the Mariola mountain range, it is the custodian of stunningly beautiful natural surroundings. Half of the municipal district of Biar is made up by forests, chiefly Mediterranean forests with abundant vegetation and aromatic plants. Its position as a mountain enclave makes it the ideal destination for openair sports such as rock climbing, hiking, paragliding,

mountain biking or canyoning. Take a stroll through its labyrinth of narrow, stonepaved alleys or refresh yourself in one of its many fountains. The castle of Biar, of Muslim origin and which has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, was originally constructed in the 12th century and is the symbol of the town. Its virtues do not end here, however, as Biar is one of the finest towns for visiting monuments in the

entire Region of Valencia. Outstanding items include the Asunción Church, located on Plaza de la Constitución, whose portico is considered to be the earliest display of Renaissance art in the Region of Valencia, as well as its Communion Chapel, built in Churrigueresque style, as well as its spectacular belfry. This is the ideal time to visit this inland paradise. In January, the La Cabalgata del Rey Pájaro ("Parade of

the Bird-King"), one of the oldest traditions of the Region of Valencia. The Bird King is a medieval character in charge of collecting agricultural taxes. The king rides through the town on horseback, surrounded by many torches and accompanied by two jesters, who dance to the sound of dolçaines. Locals light bonfires in many streets, inviting passersby to sample drinks, sweets and cold cuts. Fun, tradition and cuisine, all in one of the most beautiful towns in Alicante.

SAINTS AND DAEMONS TAKE THE STREETS OF FORCALL

14 January, 2017 Elche Les Misérables 3.0 Musical drama at the Gran Teatre. 15 January, 2017 Alicante Race Against Cancer. Road race through the streets of Alicante, raising cancer awareness. 20 to 22 January, 2017 Muro de Alcoy Medieval Market.

The town of Forcall, in Castellón, will be celebrating the Santantonada, the medieval festivity of fire, on January 13, 14 and 15. The Santantonada is the festivity of fire par excellence in Forcall, a town in the region of Els Ports, in Castellón, held in honour of the patron saint of animals with ancient rites and traditions, such as the ‘Plantà del Maio’, the ‘Vida del Sant’, the ‘Santantonà’, ‘Els Botets’ and the ‘Cremà de la Barraca’. On January 13, 14 and 15, the union of paganism and Christianity manifests in Forcall as a unique spectacle that has been declared an intangible cultural asset. The festivities take place on the streets. There you will meet Saint Anthony, Saint Paul and other characters, such as the ‘dimoni despullat’ (naked devil), ‘botargues’ (devils), the ‘filoseta’ (one of the temptations of Saint Anthony), the ‘cremallers’ (in charge of lighting the bonfire) and a picturesque array of characters who will take you to a universe of saints and daemons, of tradition and fun. The events and parades begin in the morning, however, it is at nightfall when magic enraptures the entire town. The bonfire is lit and, around the bonfire, the daemons begin to dance, with Saint Anthony in the middle. To the sound of dolçaines, the daemons are defeated by the power of good and Saint Anthony emerges victorious. This is followed by the parade through the streets and, as they pass the church, the animals are blessed. The weekend passes among religious and pagan events, popular feasts and traditional games.

The life and cuisine of Petrer at El Mas Del Poeta The El Mas Del Poeta rural hostel and restaurant is the symbiosis of two passions: the love of its founders to share the beauty and charm of the town of Petrer, in Alicante, with visitors, and the will to delight them with local cuisine and locally-grown top-quality seasonal products. El Mas del Poeta is built upon an old 18th century farmhouse that served for many years as a rain-fed agricultural field, with ample terraces of almond and olive trees. Now that it has been renovated, it has become a truly dreamlike location, a rural residence born for rest and to enjoy the Mediterranean landscapes that surround it. Many routes start from the rural hostel that will allow you to enjoy the protected landscapes of the Maigmó mountain range and the Sit mountain range.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

Bake Off fans, don’t get too depressed by channel-switching if ITV’s version of The Voice UK is anything to go by. It certainly has worked based on last Saturday’s first outing for The Voice, which was terrific, and so much better than the BBC version. There was a real fizz about the show, with less waffle; sharper editing; and a terrific final singer in the shape of Mo from Warrington. There’s no doubt that ITV want The Voice to have the same impact that it has here in Spain and in the States, and they’ve gone the right way about it. The coaches are great with Will.i.am and Sir Tom Jones (disgracefully treated by the Beeb) as the reassuring old hands, whilst Oscar and Grammy-winner Jennifer Hudson is an absolute scream and rocker Gavin Rossdale is so much more interesting than Ricky Wilson. They’ve all got something to say with honest comments, and we also don’t have to put up with excruciating minutes of the coaches having to apologise to rejected acts for not turning their chairs around. We just get on with it, and there’s a far sharper interaction afterwards between the

Saturday Night’s Alright

contenders and host Emma Willis, whilst the studio audience seems to be far more up for it. What a contrast from last season where Boy George and Paloma Faith were not good enough, and Will.i.am saying last week that he had got bored with it, and hated the way Sir Tom was treated, adding that he would have quit, if ITV had not bought the rights. Two people I know who did not like The Voice before, loved it last Saturday, and I urge you to revisit a

show that I always liked, that has got a lot lot better. Ironically, The Voice is shot in the same Media City, Salford studio as the BBC’s new Saturday night offering Let It Shine, as Gary Barlow leads the search to find a line up of boyband members for a new musical that will be hitting the West End. I enjoyed the good nature of the show helmed by Graham Norton and Mel Geidroyc, though at 90 minutes, I thought the run time was a bit long. Barlow and familiar panellist Dannii

Minogue were joined by Glee and musical star Amber Riley, and Spandau Ballet/exEastenders star, Martin Kemp (a real fun find) as the jury running the rule over the contenders. They were all in a fun and generous spirit in an enjoyable watch, though I suspect the tension and the seriousness levels will rise as we start getting to the business end of things. With this, and The Voice, it’s good to see a Saturday evening in January offering some excellent enter-

tainment that doesn’t treat the viewer as a fool. Let’s leave that to the awful Keith Lemon and the atrocious Through The Keyhole later in the evening. As if The Voice and Let It Shine were not enough, somebody at the BBC has grown a pair, and put it a very different bit of drama for a Saturday night in the shape of Taboo starring Tom Hardy. This was so dark and dirty that I had to have a shower afterwards, in an early 19th century tale of Hardy return-

ing to London to claim an inheritance, with everybody thinking that he was dead. He discovers that his old man was poisoned, and there’s a wonderful confrontation with the bosses of the East India Company who want to pay him off for a stretch of North American land that his father left him. The language is fruity, as we’d expect from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, as we get a bunch of most unlikeable but enthralling characters. Hardy does grime and nasty brilliantly, and though Taboo will not be to everybody’s taste, I was hooked, and I applaud BBC 1 for having the guts to run this on a Saturday, as it duly destroyed Through The Keyhole in the ratings. I could write pages on what I think about the wonderful Sherlock, with I’m sure a fantastic finale to come on BBC 1 this Sunday night. Exceptional performances (with a great guest turn from Toby Jones and Una Stubbs producing comedy gold) in the last episode, led to a great coming together of all the strands that were set up in episode one, and a new nemesis for Sherlock and Watson to face. Terrific!

Meanwhile, having reported the new truck as stolen, angry Kevin tells Tyrone, Luke and Freddie that someone accessed his email and rearranged the delivery. In a bid to prove their innocence, Freddie, Luke and Tyrone install a hi-tech CCTV system at the garage, complete with sound and linked direct to Kevin's laptop. Telling Anna that without a pick-up truck he's losing money hand over fist, Kevin resolves to find out who hacked into his email and have his revenge.

Elsewhere, Bex admits to Stacey that she still has feelings for Shakil, but he's not the only boy in her life as Keegan winds her up. MONDAY It's Phil's birthday and his presents include a jigsaw of the Queen Vic, which is presented to him by Dennis.

Seizing the moment, Andy sets fire to the new garage and grabs Kevin's laptop as he does a runner. Brian spots the garage fire and orders everybody to stand clear while he calls the fire brigade. WEDNESDAY As the fire investigator sifts through the charred remains of the garage, he finds a set of keys. Soon afterwards, Kevin tells Tyrone that he intends to sell the garage once the insurance has paid out. Tyrone becomes suspicious as a result, especially when the fire investigator confirms that the blaze is now in the hands of the police as they suspect it's a case of arson. The police confirm that with no sign of a forced entry.

Later, Phil interrupts the celebrations by dropping a bombshell on Sharon. As a result, secrets explode for the Mitchells. Meanwhile, Jack is still struggling to explain Ronnie and Roxy's deaths to Ricky and Amy. As Dot and Glenda discuss the situation, Dot suggests that it might be best for Matthew to go off and live with Charlie. When Tina and Kathy both confront Babe over her latest bad behaviour, she has to confess in front of the Carters. Finally losing patience with Babe and her constant scheming, Mick warns her that she's out if she messes up even one more time. Meanwhile, Lee reveals to Whitney that he has a job interview, while life for Mick continues to go from bad to worse. Elsewhere, tensions continue to run high for the Fox family following the arrival of Denise's baby. Also today, Danny helps Jack and Glenda to prepare for the funeral, while Louise sets her sights on Travis, a guy from her drama club. Finally, Emerald is touched by Patrick's sensitivity when they talk about Denise. THURSDAY Lee decides to gatecrash Whitney's girls' night out, but things go wrong when he makes a worrying discovery as a result. Drunk and emotional, Lee unleashes his wrath on Whitney and blames her for everything that's happened to him recently. Mariella Frostrup and The Reverend Richard Coles Agent Scarlett set to report from backstage at the NTAs to host BBC One’s Big Painting Challenge Coming soon to BBC One, Mariella Frostrup and The Reverend Richard Coles will take charge as BBC One challenges ten creative and inspired contestants to pick up their paintbrushes and dust off their palettes to join The Big Painting Challenge. Ten passionate amateur artists undertake an intensive, sixweek, artistic boot-camp, in a bid to perfect their skills and be crowned the overall champion. Inspiring mentors Diana Ali and Pascal Anson will guide the ten new contenders - all with diverse artistic backgrounds - through different painting challenges in five separate disciplines. Each episode will ask them to rise to the challenge of producing two pieces of work in a different discipline, from portraiture to landscape to still life and movement; the painters visit different locations to inspire their masterpieces including the National Portrait Gallery, ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, and Queen’s House in Greenwich. They will need to brush up on their sketching and perfect their portraiture as their artistic skills are put to the ultimate test of skill, creativity and paintwork. At the end of each episode, the contestants’ work will be exhibited to invited members of the local public, before judges Dr David Dibosa, Lachlan Goudie and Daphne Todd OBE critique the paintings and decide which contestant will be eliminated. Replicating the Atelier system, which bore such artists as Leonardo da Vinci – the two mentors, Diana and Pascal, will run their own studios, by their own rules, with each choosing five contestants to guide and encourage through the challenges. Presenters Mariella and Richard will follow the individual approaches of each of the ten amateur artists, as they take on these challenges in a bid to hone their strengths and eliminate their weaknesses, going on an artistic and personal journey to become the winner of The Big Painting Challenge 2017. Mariella Frostrup says, “The Big Painting Challenge is a wonderful showcase for those many gifted artists who aspire to making a career of their painting, often receiving little or no recognition for their efforts along the way. It's a programme that demands confidence, talent and hard work from the contestants and I was delighted to join forces with The Reverend Richard Coles and watch this group of charismatic painters as they strove to fulfil their potential over the weeks. "Being the daughter of an amateur artist myself I'm all too aware of the frustration and commitment required to keep going. It was fascinating to witness these ten amateur artists work their brushes into a frenzy and see their work develop impressively.” The Reverend Richard Coles said, “I am delighted to be presenting The Big Painting Challenge with Mariella, partly because I love watching talented people grow and develop, in the intense focus of TV cameras, as we put in front of them baby elephants, ballerinas, national treasures and historic monuments and partly in the hope it will encourage people at home to get painting."

BBC News heads to Uganda BBC Focus On Africa television and radio, along with the BBC Swahili TV programme, Dira ya Dunia, will hit the road together in January to broadcast live from Uganda for a week from 23 to 27 January. This will be the first time the programmes have come together to broadcast from the continent, and will feature special guests and studio audiences on TV, radio and online.

The characterful drama focuses on an ordinary working class woman, Sam, who is caught between two worlds – the everyday life of a devoted and loving Mum and the darker, dangerous world of insider trading. Sassy office cleaner Sam (Sheridan Smith) is one of an invisible army of cleaners on a zero hours contract who mop, sweep and vacuum in the early hours. Struggling with an online gambling addiction, Sam realises she has access to lucrative Stock Market information which, if used correctly, could be the answer to all her prayers. With her husband threatening to take custody of their two daughters, 14-year-old Alice and 8-year-old Lily, Sam is being backed into a corner and needs to come out fighting. Set in the contrasting worlds of shiny Canary Wharf and the realities of modern suburbia, Clean Break, explores how far Sam will go to survive, claw back some self-respect and get her life back on track. Getting back to black is going to be tough and Sam is about to stake everything on the unpredictable world of the Stock Market. With her trusted band of cleaners gleaning information while the rest of the world sleeps, and in the knowledge insider trading is against the law, will Sam tread this dangerous line? Smart, and witty, can Sam overcome her addictive personality? Clean Break has been commissioned for ITV by Head of Drama Polly Hill. “I am delighted to be commissioning Mark Marlow's first drama. It's such a wonderful script that finds real humour and joy in the human struggle to survive. Sheridan is perfect for the role of Sam and I'm thrilled she's returning to ITV to play her. Produced by Jane and Sister Pictures, it's a fantastic team and promises to be a real treat for our audience.” Produced by Sister Pictures, the drama indie launched by former Kudos Chief Executive Jane Featherstone in January 2016, Clean Break has been created by screenwriting newcomer Mark Marlow. The series will be executive produced by Jane Featherstone (Broadchurch, Humans, River, Spooks) and Chris Fry (Humans, The Smoke, Spooks) and directed by Lewis Arnold (Humans, Broadchurch, Misfits, Banana), who has also developed the drama with Mark Marlow. Commented Jane Featherstone: “It’s such a pleasure to be making a show for ITV about contemporary Britain with a strong and complicated female lead character. It’s also enormously gratifying that this comes from an exceptional brand new voice, Mark, and a brilliant up-and-coming director, Lewis Arnold. Expect it to be moving, funny and surprising.” Clean Break will be filmed in the London area during the autumn of 2017.

Focus On Africa is the flagship news and current affairs programme for Africa, broadcast every weekday on BBC World News television and BBC World Service radio. The show is presented by some of the biggest names in African journalism, including Peter Okwoche, Sophie Ikenye and Paul Bakibinga, as well as Salim Kikeke and Dayo Yusuf from Dira ya Dunia. Throughout the week, exclusive stories from BBC correspondents in Malawi, Algeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sierra Leone will be featured on the programmes, showcasing the breadth and depth of the BBC’s coverage across the continent, and holding those in positions of responsibility to account. The shows will also feature some of Uganda’s biggest and best in the entertainment and sports world. There will be live performances from musicians, dance troupes and comedians, as well as special reports from the BBC's reporters in Gabon for the Cup of Nations, where they will join Ugandan fans for the Cranes’ final group match against Mali.

Coming to ITV in 2017, Phillip Schofield hosts a brand-new interactive game show, 5 Gold Rings, which will be airing on ITV in 2017 and is produced by Possessed and Talpa. The format sees two teams go head to head over five rounds. One team will be walking away with up to £25,000, whilst the other will leave with nothing. Who wins and who loses is decided in a unique way… using five gold rings. The teams will have to battle it out against the clock to answer questions by placing gold rings onto a supersized image displayed beneath their feet on a huge circular LED floor. For example, the picture might be a map of the world and teams will attempt the question, ‘Where is the highest mountain on earth?’ by placing a gold ring on the image where they think the answer is. If the contestant correctly encircles the answer, they move onto the next round and more money, but if they’re wrong, they lose that ring forever. For the contestants, every pixel really does count as state-of-the-art software, specially crafted for this game, detects – down to the pixel - exactly where each ring is placed on the floor. Each round will get decidedly more difficult as after every correct answer is given all of their remaining gold rings will decrease in size – making it even tougher to find and encircle the next correct answer. If they lose all five of their rings, it’s game over. Viewers will also get the chance to play along with the action by downloading the 5 Gold Rings App. They’ll be able to answer the exact same questions as the contestants in the studio and also have the chance to see how their scores match up with other players across the country. Phillip Schofield said: “I love the whole concept of this show. It’s such a simple idea. The longer you stay in the game, the smaller the rings get. It looks amazing and anyone of any age can play. I can’t wait to get started!” Peter Davey, Head of Comedy and Entertainment for ITV said, "The interactivity is a great bonus, but I was initially drawn to the fact that it is an innovative, modern and extremely fresh way to do an exciting and original TV game." Glenn Hugill, Managing Director, Possessed: “We are so excited about 5 Gold Rings. It really is a game for everyone. It looks beautiful and is such a simple idea. Your rings get smaller and smaller as you go on and so getting correct answers becomes a real achievement. It’s unlike any other game or quiz show as being accurate is just as important as being smart. You can play against your kids, your friends, your parents on a completely level playing field. There’s such a buzz about it and it’s already spreading around the world.” 5 Gold Rings is a Possessed (part of ITV studios) and Talpa production for ITV. It was commissioned for ITV by Head of Comedy and Entertainment, Peter Davey, the executive producers are Glenn Hugill and Kalpna Patel-Knight for Possessed.

It’s a show we love to make so it’s fantastic that it’s also a show that people seem to want to watch and we are incredibly grateful to all the fans that support it each series.” Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content, says: "Sherlock is a jewel in BBC One's crown and I'm thrilled that for the second year running it's the most watched show over the Christmas period. Huge credit to the creative genius of Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, who continue to raise the bar with each new series." Last year, Sherlock: The Abominable Bride topped the festive ratings, with 11.6 million viewers. Sherlock is written and created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss and inspired by the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman play the iconic roles of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson. Sherlock is produced by Sue Vertue and the executive producers are Beryl Vertue, Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat for Hartswood Films, Bethan Jones for BBC Cymru Wales and Rebecca Eaton for Masterpiece. It is distributed internationally by BBC Worldwide.

Q

Hi Richard, I turned my Toshiba Pro Windows 10 on today and found I have a black top and black bottom and screen in between. Please tell me how to restore to full screen please. Thank you, Christine.

A

Hi Christine, from your description it could be a couple of things, but probably the more likely is that your screen resolution has changed – maybe it’s a New Year resolution (joke).

To change your resolution, do the following… 1.

Right click the desktop, select Display Settings

2.

Click on Advanced Display Settings

3.

From the Resolution drop down select a different resolution

Q

Hi Richard, I have a 64GB USB stick with over 1000 pieces of music in MP3 format. However, when I use the TV or stereo system I can only play them in alphabetical order. Is there any way I can randomise them or alternately, is there any software I can load onto the USB stick to do it for me?Regards, John

A

Hi John, you could try placing the music you want to play in folders on the stick, then perhaps the TV and stereo might give you the option to select a folder to play – that’s an easy thing to check of course.Alternativelythere may well be an option on your TV / stereo that gives you an option to play the music differently, you would need to check your manual for any options.

4. Your screen display will change for 15 seconds (so if it looks wrong just leave it and it will change back to how it is now). 5.

Once you select the resolution you need, click on the “Keep Change” button.

Toyota attacks rivals over claims driverless cars are ready

Toyota has launched a scathing attack at both car makers and tech companies who claim they are ready to introduce fully autonomous cars. The criticism follows companies like pure-electric car maker, Tesla, claiming its Model 3 will be capable of fully autonomous driving. Last year the US car maker’s founder, Elon Musk, claimed that the Model X and Model S and Model 3, the latter on sale in the USA in 2017 (2018

in other markets), would come fitted with hardware that would enable ‘Level 5 autonomy’ which allows the vehicle to drive itself without any human interaction or supervision. Initially, it’s thought vehicles like the Model 3 won’t be sold as fully autonomous tech – but will be only a software update away from being driverless. Level 5 is referred within the industry as the ‘holy grail’ of self-driving as it can completely eliminate a

human from the driving experience but, according to Toyota’s R&D boss Gill Pratt, nobody is even close to safely launching the tech. Speaking to CES show goers, Pratt said: “None of us in the automobile or IT industries are close to achieving true Level 5 autonomy”. Toyota’s R&D boss says to achieve the “perfection” needed for driverless vehicles still requires “many years” and “many more miles than anyone has

logged of both simulated and real-world testing” before it can be safely introduced to the market. The problem, Pratt says, with the new technology is that while society can accept the 39,000 annual deaths caused by human error (in the US alone), nobody would tolerate a similar death toll if they were caused by a software or hardware fault. Toyota has already invested more than a billion dollars in both the artificial intelligence and the

hardware needed for selfdriving capability but says it is still a long way from handing over control to computers. Instead, Pratt suggests Toyota might jump from Level 2 autonomy that allows a semi-autonomous cruise control (if hands remain on the wheel) to Level 4 autonomy that allows a degree of full driverless capability but only on roads with embedded infrastructure that safely guides the vehicle. Tesla has yet to

announce when it plans to introduce the software to allow any of its models the ability for fully autonomous driving but some suggest it could be as soon as early 2019 to get a head start on its competitors. Other car makers like Ford, meanwhile, says it too plans to have full autonomy on offer – but much later that Tesla. Currently the Blue Oval says it will have its first fleet of driverless vehicles on the roads of major cities by 2021.

World number two Rory McIlroy has said he still resents the Olympic Games for forcing him to choose between Britain and Ireland and revealed that Tiger Woods sends him texts in the early hours. The Northern Irishman, who agonised for years before opting to represent Ireland, ultimately withdrew from last year’s Rio de Janeiro Games after citing health fears over the Zika virus. The four times major winner told the Irish Independent newspaper in an interview that it was a choice he had never wanted to make. “When it (golf’s return to the Olympics for the first time since 1904) was announced in 2009 or whatever, all of a sudden it put me in a position where I had to question who I am. Who am I? Where am I from? Where do my loyalties lie?,” he said. “Who am I going to play for? Who do I not want to piss off the most? I started to resent it. And I do. I resent the Olympic Games because of the position it put me in...” McIlroy sent gold medal winner Justin Rose a text after the Briton’s success in Rio offering congratulations and saying he was happy for him.

Rose replied by saying the other players wanted to know whether McIlroy felt he had missed out. “I said: ‘Justin, if I had been on the podium (listening) to the Irish national anthem as that flag went up, or the British national anthem as that flag went up, I would have felt uncomfortable either way.” recalled McIlroy. “I don’t know the words to either anthem; I don’t feel a connection to either flag; I don’t want it to be about flags; I’ve tried to stay away from that.” While Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, which takes part in the Olympics as Britain, its athletes are eligible to compete for Ireland. McIlroy described former world number one Woods, who makes his official comeback after a long injury layoff later this month, as “an intriguing character”. "I’m drawn to him, yeah. He’s an intriguing character, because you could spend two hours in his company and see four different sides to him. When he’s comfortable and he trusts you — and his trust (sensitivity) is way (higher) than mine — he’s great. He’s thoughtful. He’s smart. He reads. He can’t sleep so that’s all

Rory Opens Up he does — he reads stuff and educates himself on everything. But he struggles to sleep, which I think is an effect of overtraining, so I tell him to calm down sometimes. He’d be texting me at four o’clock in the morning: ‘Up lifting. What are you doing?’" Despite being a Tiger Woods fan, McIlroy admit-

ted to the Irish Independent that his greatest inspiration was the Golden Bear, Jack Nicklaus. "Yeah, a lot of what (Jack) says resonates with me. Could you work harder? Yes. Could you spend 12 hours a day at the course? Absolutely. Would it make you any happier? No. And at the

end of the day what do you want to be? There are certain goals I want to achieve: I want a career Grand Slam. I want to become the best ever European player, recordswise — Faldo has that at the minute — and maybe get to double-digit Majors. They are longterm goals, and of course I want to achieve them,

but I don’t want to sacrifice my happiness at the same time. "I always take what he has to say on board — I don’t take all of it, but I take most of it on board. He’s the most successful golfer of all time — 18 Major championships — but he also had the best balance between golf and family."

Sailing Successes It was presentation time for the Sailing Association Mar Menor (SAMM) Autumn Series of races, with a lot of relief that the action does not stretch into December, with the dreadful weather. Five race days were completed, with the results calculated by using the ‘low points’ system, with the best six results counting. The clear winner was Shoestring

Groups Cuatro with 13.75 points. Second was the Balaton Groups Sirocco with 20.5 points, closely followed in third place by Shoestring Dos with 21 points and fourth Shoestring Uno with 21.75 points, which was a very tight affair. As Group owned boats, they were all sailed by different skippers and crews, so the trophies for the top three places were presented to a

representative of each. Diane Hardwick for Cuatro, Terry Chapman for Sirocco and Tim Clarke for Dos, pictured from right to left in the photograph. The Spring Series 2017 will start in March and all comers, not just SAMM members, are welcome. For more information, you can visit the ‘Racing’ section of the group´s website at www.sailingmarmenor.com.

Cobras New Base

Costa Cobras RFC have a new and more central training base as they now train every Monday and Wednesday evening at the football ground in San Fulgencio. The move has been beneficial to the club, with it being more convenient for their catchment area and

also offers stability for the future, rather than being concerned about having to change location. The twice-weekly sessions at San Fulgencio run between 8.30 pm and 10.00 pm, with players of all ages joining in from juniors to seniors, with plans to split the

sessions as more players sign up. The aim of the Cobras is to put teams into the summer beach tournaments and also to enter a team into the Valencian league for next season. For more details, phone Dutch on 692 767 242.

Strong Tigers

The first Murcia league encounter of 2017 in the Cadetes league saw a strong Torrevieja Tigers side (pictured) roll out easy 52-15 victors over ITV Orihuela Vega

Baja at the Nelson Mandela stadium last Sunday morning. The Tigers, bolstered by players from Elche, were too strong for their Orihuela

rivals, and look a good bet to possibly win the title, though the visitors kept their heads up throughout the match, especially in the all-exciting second half.

No Luck For Torry

CD TORREVIEJA 1 VILLARREAL C 2 Torry’s first match of 2017 was one that they deserved to win, but they didn’t, as an excellent second-half display saw a heart-breaking injury-time breakaway from the visitors produce a winner. The bottom line is another defeat for Torry, as they remain in a relegation spot, fourth from bottom in the Valencian third division, and the team above them, Muro, went a point clear of Torry, after a surprise one-all home draw with leaders Olimpic. Then there is a further seven point gap to the next cluster of sides, as for the time being, the rest of the season appears to be a shoot-out with Muro to avoid the drop. Sunday’s clash at the Nelson Mandela stadium ended up on a sour note with both sets of players ending up in a brawl with Carrasco red-carded for Torry, and Chepe for Villarreal, as well as referee Cristian Campo Hernández waving yellow cards around like a fly swatter. The Guardia Civil were left to escort the officials off the pitch, as the Torry fans applauded the efforts of their players. Villarreal C were much the better side in the first half, as they delivered their passes with greater accuracy and fluency and had Torry struggling to contend with them. Making his debut in goal for the suspended Buba, Lucas had to dash out of his box to try and clear a ball, but flattened Chepe instead and was lucky to be given just a yellow card in the third minute of the

45

Friday 13th January 2017

match. He later redeemed himself with several excellent reflex saves. As well as Buba, Calzado, Vicente and Lewis Allen were all suspended and that meant full debuts for Lucas and Jorge(one of a number of new signings). Lewis Rutherford also played for the first time for Torry, coming on as a 56th minute sub for the injured Lewis Booker. Torry did well to weather the first half Villareal storm, with Torry captain Martin making some crucial tackles, whilst debutant Jorge was also impressive. However it was Villarreal who opened the scoring in the 49th minute. Carrasco seemed to feel he had been fouled and allowed his opponent to escape his clutches, who crossed simply to Simon who then buried his shot into the corner of the net. The goal galvanised Torry, who then turned on the style as Luis Carlos and Robles tormented them down the left flank, whilst Pastor and Damian ran riot on the right. Torry took a stranglehold on the game and it was one way traffic for much of last half hour. Torry scored a well deserved equaliser with 25 minutes left to play after Luis Carlos delivered a superb free kick from the left and new boy Jorge rose highest to glance the ball home (celebrations pictured). Torry then brought on Hugo Salamanca in what his last appearance for the club (his departure to pastures unknown was

announced on Tuesday), to help thrust through the middle for the winner, which looked a good bet to happen. Damian beat the offside trap with an immaculate run and delivered the ball across goal but Robles just failed to get the necessary touch on it to convert it. Pastor was combining with Damian to create more chances and Villarreal were riding their luck. Fuoli in the visitor's goal was having a charmed life, sticking out an arm or a leg to frustrate the home side. After one such save, the ball fell to Robles who smashed it into the net via the underside of the crossbar. The referee looked to his linesman for confirmation of the goal, but none was forthcoming and play continued in what appeared to be a poor decision. Moments later, Damian worked his magic inside the box on the left hand side and passed to Hugo who cleverly back flipped the ball into the net for an apparent Torry winner, which the linesman ruled offside. Hopes of a Torry winner continued until Villarreal broke in added time, and Akale found himself with only Lucas to beat. He did so professionally and with barely two minutes left to play, Villareal had taken the advantage and the points. For Torry, the table makes grim reading and they need a change of fortune soon, starting with something away to old rivals Orihuela this Sunday, with a 5.00 pm kick-off.

Good Away Day

JOVE ESPANOL 0 CD THADER 2 Thader got off to a winning start in 2017 away to the San Vicente-based side, with both goals coming in the first half in which Thader dominated. A good move in the ninth minute saw Rubén Sanz set up Quino for the opener, followed by a Raul header on the half-hour mark

that gave Jove keeper Roberto no chance. Jove improved in the second half, but Thader looked always in control, with the victory marred by Raul having to go off early in the second period with a shoulder injury. Thader continue to be amongst the promotion con-

tenders in group four of the Preferente, and are just two points behind third-placed Benidorm, and five behind Hercules in second spot. They have the ultimate test though this weekend, when they travel to top of the table Villajoyosa, who lead the division by seven points.

Second Best Almoradi

SILLA CF 3 CD ALMORADI 0 If CD Torrevieja's position in the Valencia third division remains in the balance (see left), then CD Almoradi appear to have a mountain to climb if they are to keep the status they had fought so hard to get, after securing promotion last May. Sunday's defeat at fellowpromoted side Silla, leaves them five points behind Torrevieja and Bunol, and six behind Muro to get to safety, with the rest of the division pulling away. Almoradi were two-nil down at half-time, with recently appointed coach Joserra admitting afterwards that his side threw it away as a realistic contest in the first half, after David Verdú put

Silla ahead after seven minutes, with Jero doubling the advantage in the 27th minute. Silla were well on their way to a league double over a side they beat threeone back in August. Though Almoradi looking more competitive in the second half, Silla's keeper Lucas Parrar didn't lose much sleep against what he had to contend with, and it seemed inevitable that the home side would score again, which they duly did, courtesy of Verdú's second strike in the 81st minute. With everything decided, Almoradi actually looked the most dangerous they had all during the match and had a goal disallowed which would

have been of little consolation on a poor outing for them. They now entertain a decent-looking Torre Levante side this Sunday afternoon, with Almoradi's hopes of avoiding relegation quickly slipping away. In last weekend's other third division results, Orihuela played out a goalless draw at promotion-chasing Alzira, with Orihuela now at home to Torrevieja this Sunday. Crevillente gained a twonil win at fellow mid-table side Almazora, and now entertain Recambios Colon, whilst Elche Ilicitano go to Borriol this Sunday on the back of their two-one home victory over Paterna.

La Liga leaders Real Madrid equalled Barcelona's Spanish record of 39 consecutive matches unbeaten as they swatted aside a woeful Granada last Saturday. Zinedine Zidane's side were 4-0 up after 32 minutes, with Isco slotting in their first from Karim Benzema's pass. Benzema converted after Guillermo Ochoa spilled a Luka Modric shot, before Cristiano Ronaldo headed a third. Isco tapped in a Modric cross, and midfielder Casemiro touched home a fifth from James Rodriguez's free kick, with Real now four points clear of second-place Sevilla, with a game in hand on them and Barcelona, who are two points further behind after their last-gasp draw at Villarreal. Real have a big test on Sunday when they go to Sevilla, having played them already last night (Thursday) at their ground in the Copa del Rey.

Guess Who?

ELCHE 2 CADIZ 3 VILLARREAL 1 BARCELONA 1 Barcelona are now five points behind Real Madrid in the La Liga title race, having played a game more, after they drew with Villarreal on Sunday. They had looked set to resume their league campaign following the winter break with a defeat after Nicola Sansone put the hosts in front five minutes after half-time. But a sublime free kick from Lionel Messi, as the game crept into stoppage time, salvaged a deserved point for Luis Enrique's side in his 150th game in charge. Barca remain in third, a point behind secondplaced Sevilla, while Villarreal stay fifth, just one point adrift of Atletico Madrid. Their next match is at home to Las Palmas tomorrow afternoon.

BARCELONA 3 ATHLETIC BILBAO 1 (4-3 AGG) Lionel Messi broke Athletic Bilbao's hearts with a late free kick as Barcelona's big guns kept their Copa del Rey hopes alive and advanced to the quarter finals on Wednesday. Messi struck with 12 minutes remaining at the Nou Camp to seal a 3-1 win on the night and a 4-3 aggregate victory to ensure Luis Enrique's men made it to the last eight. Barca went into the second leg trailing 2-1 and knowing failure to end a run of two games without victory would spell disaster in front of a crowd of 71,445. However, Luis Suarez cancelled out Bilbao's advantage with his 100th goal for the club before the break, and Neymar struck from the penalty spot after the restart before Enric Saborit pulled one back. Messi's contribution ultimately sealed victory with a goal which means he, Suarez and Neymar have now scored a staggering 302 between them since joining forces.

Martin’s Move

Dutch side Heerenveen have confirmed the signing of Real Madrid teenager Martin Odegaard on an 18-month loan. The Norway international has failed to make a breakthrough at the Bernabeu since becoming Real's youngest player at the age of 16 years and 157 days in 2015. Odegaard had made his Norway debut before turning 16 in late 2014 before joining Real from Stromsgodset. But since then, he has been restricted in the main to playing for Real's second string - Castilla - with his sole firstteam appearance this season coming in the Copa del Rey against Cultural Leonesa.

A late Cadiz strike, as the last seven minutes of this mach produced three goals, denied Elche a share of the spoils on Sunday, which they deserved after one of their better Segunda division performances of the season. The Ilicitanos were handicapped by playing with 10 men for most of the match, after Rober Correa got his marching orders after picking up his second yellow card in only the 23rd minute. Correa's stupidity, which saw him taking to social media to apologise to fans after the match, came after Pelayo had given the Ilicitanos the early lead against an in-form Cadiz side in the 14th minute. The visitors were lifted by Correa's dismissal, and levelled through an excellent Ortuño header just six minutes later. Elche's heads didn't go down though and they dominated large parts of the match, Cadiz looked dangerous on the counter-attack, and they struck late in the second-half through substitute Güiza in the 81st minute, after the Ilicitanos earlier had a golden chance to take the lead through Nino. Two minutes from the end, it looked like Elche had earned themselves a point after Armando headed them level, only for a poor Elche defensive clearance a minute later that was seized upon by Güiza to earn the visitors a victory that left the Ilicitanos with nothing to show for their brave efforts. Elche lie 12th in the Segunda table, and now travel to Oviedo tomorrow evening, with both sides having 20 points to their name.

GRUPO CALICHE 1 CD MONTESINOS 2 This rearranged match, after the December storms postponed the original clash, was played out on a bitterly cold Wednesday evening at Pilar de la Horadada, with a vital win for Montesinos. The team were backed up by an excellent contingent of travelling supporters,(picture) that outnumbered the home fans! It was a fast-paced encounter with plenty of misplaced passes and mistakes from both sides, but Monte carved out the best chances in the first half, and went in one-nil up at the interval, after a fine goal from Aureu. He was given the ball on the right wing, and from almost on the halfway line, he simply turned round and with his left foot, hit a blistering soaring shot that beat the Caliche keeper all ends up. Earlier, Monte had a Vaz goal disallowed for offside and had a number of close calls that would have seen a more comfortable half-time advantage. The second half continued at the same pace, with the referee’s brain cells hit by the cold weather as his early authority went down the pan, with a serious of nightmare decisions that were wrong in every aspect, much to the frustration of both sides. Monte kept their cool and avoided any cautions as they deservedly got their second goal with ten minutes remaining. Carlos Lorente picked up the ball on the left wing and skillfully took it through the Caliche defenders to the penalty area, where he sent a delightful left-foot pass to Carlos Ventura who made no mistake in putting the ball into the back of the net. Caliche ensured a grandstand finish though, as they pulled a goal back with five minutes remaining as the frenetic pace and the erratic referee got everybody biting their fingernails. Monte are now looking forward to another big game at home to CD Benijofar this Sunday, with a 4. 15 pm kick-off.

Barcelona and Real Madrid dominated the 2016 FIFPro World 11 which was announced at The Best Fifa Awards ceremony in Zurich on Monday. Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is the only player included within the team who did not ply his trade in Spain's top flight last season. Current Juventus right-back Dani Alves is the other current non-La Liga player, though he played the whole of last season at Barcelona, having only joined the Italian champions in the summer. The rest of the defence is made up by Real skipper Sergio Ramos, Barca and Spain centre-half Gerard Pique and Real's Brazilian left-back Marcelo. The midfield includes Real Madrid and Croatia's Luka Modric, Spain and Barcelona's Andres Iniesta and Modric's Madrid teammate and Germany international Toni Kroos. The front three consists of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Cristiano Ronaldo, with Neymar and FIFA Men's Player Award nominee Antoine Griezmann the most high-profile omissions. The award, which is decided by the players, is deliberated at the end of every season. It involves votes from more than 25,000 professional footballers from over 75 different countries with each selecting one goalkeeper, four defenders, three midfielders and three forwards.

Simply The Best

FIXTURES Friday 13th January 2017 SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP 20:45 Leeds United v Derby County

Elche's veteran striker Nino will stay at the Segunda Division club until June 2018, with the club announcing this week that their sporting director, Chuti, had done a deal to extend Nino's contract two months ago. The side's top scorer this season, with six in the league and one in the Copa del Rey, became an instant favourite after establishing himself in the side's ranks as a teenager nearly 20 years ago. He moved to Levante in 2006, before returning to Elche from Osasuna last year. Nino told Onda Cero radio that he was very happy to stay at Elche and that he had been keen to prove himself on his return last summer, and to maintain a good standard at his age, and not to be seen as a passenger in the squad. "The time will come when I will not be able to play well," said Nino. "If that is the case, then I will leave, even if I have time left on a contract."

Unhappy Liga

La Liga are planning on taking FIFA to court to stop the World Cup expanding to 48 teams. A senior source at the Spanish league says they will do everything possible to reverse the FIFA Council's decision to increase the size of the tournament from 32 to 48 teams. La Liga warned Gianni Infantino before Tuesday's vote that they would take legal action if the FIFA president went ahead with his plans.

Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo was named the world's best player at the inaugural Best FIFA Football Awards in Zurich. The award comes off the back of Ronaldo winning the 61st edition of the Ballon d'Or in December following a stellar year which saw him achieve Champions League and Euro 2016 success with Real Madrid and Portugal. Ronaldo beat Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann to clinch the prize at a glittering ceremony on Monday night. "Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. It's incredible. I want to thank my teammates of Real Madrid and the coach," said Ronaldo upon picking up his award. "Thanks for everything you have done for me. I must thank my family and my whole staff for everything they have given me. 2016 was the best year of my career.” "I had a lot of doubts, but at the end of it the trophies speak for themselves. They show I've lived up to the expectations and I achieved the best I could. "This achievement is incredible. I will never forget this year. I'm really happy." However, Ronaldo's year was blighted by media reports in December containing data leaks which alleged he had hidden tens of millions of euros in British Virgin Island tax havens. However, the four-time World Player of the Year insists he is calm and believes justice will be done in his favour. "It bothers me because when you do things well, when you help a lot of people and I am going to mention the award for charity work, which is one of the best awards I have in my museum," he added.

Balancing Up

Useful Friendly

After their unlucky league defeat to Villarreal on Sunday (see page 45), CD Torrevieja’s suspended players who missed that match like Vicente, Buba and Calzado in addition to Lewis Allen, took on China’s Shanghai Shenxim at the Pinatar Arena on Tuesday, in an encounter that finished goalless. New signings, 22-year-old Mali-born Diaby looked strong in midfield and 21-year-old French-born llyes (pictured) also had a determined presence in the middle of the park. Coach Pedreno took the opportunity to get some match practice into his players returning from suspension ahead of this Sunday’s clash at Orihuela, as well as Lewis Allen, who got a four-game ban after his dismissal before Christmas at Almoradi. His first opportunity to play a league game does not arrive until February 12th, as Torry have their "weekend off" in the fixture list on February 5th, when his ban finishes. The match against the Chinese visitors was an informative friendly, as well as being an enjoyable break from the normal training routine for the Torry squad.

Barcelona's hopes of offering Lionel Messi an improved contract face a stumbling block because of spending caps imposed by La Liga, the club's CEO Oscar Grau said on Wednesday. Luis Suarez and Neymar have each signed new deals until 2021 but Messi's contract runs out in 2018, giving Barca a window of 18 months to prevent him leaving the club for free. The Argentina international earns a reported 22 million euro per year after tax, while Neymar and Suarez's salaries are believed to be 25 million euro after their latest contract renewals. Grau said any new deal for the Argentine would put considerable pressure on the club's finances. "Barcelona has to analyse this situation with a cold head and common sense," Grau commented. "Barca can't exceed 70 per cent of its budget on wages and therefore we have to make the numbers add up." La Liga agrees budgetary limits with each club at the start of every season and its regulations, known as economic controls, prevent clubs from spending over 70 per cent of their budget on wages. Barca's budget for this season is a record 695 million euro. Grau said one way for Barca to renew Messi's contract was to increase revenues. Their latest sponsorship deal with Japanese retailer Rakuten will earn the club a world-record 55 million euro per year.

ZLATAN’S BIG DAY

TAYLOR DIES

Former England manager Graham Taylor, who also led clubs including Watford and Aston Villa, died yesterday at the age of 72. Taylor, who grew up in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, took charge of England between 1990 and 1993. His family said in a statement: "With the greatest sadness, we have to announce that Graham passed away at his home as a result of a suspected heart attack. "The family are devastated by this sudden and totally unexpected loss."

MORGAN’S DUCK England’s cricketers were thrashed by India A by six wickets in their 50-over warm-up match at Mumbai ahead of Sunday’s start of their six one-day international series. Captain Eoin Morgan was out first ball as England’s middle order collapsed before a last wicket stand of 70 between Adil Rashid and David Willey helped them to 282. Ajinkya Rahane made 91 for the hosts, as they cruised in with 10 overs to spare.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is confident that Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be available for United’s big Premier League clash with Liverpool (5.00 pm). The two sides renew their fierce rivalry on Sunday afternoon in one of the most hotly anticipated games of the season. United’s top-scorer is set to return after being rested for the FA Cup win over Reading and missing Tuesday’s League Cup semifinal victory over Hull through illness. Asked whether it would keep the Swede out of the key Old Trafford clash, Mourinho told BT Sport: “I don’t think so.” The Portuguese boss must now decide who out of Martial, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard or Marcus Rashford will line up alongside Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in attack. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will be boosted by the return of key man Philippe Coutinho to Premier League action after the Brazilian came on as a substitute in Liverpool’s one-nil League Cup semi-final defeat against Southampton on Wednesday. Klopp was honest that one-nil flattered his side, and was grateful that there’s a second leg to come at Anfield. "We have to show a reaction - but it would be cool if we could already show a reaction at the weekend, because we probably need a better performance to get something at Old Trafford,” said the German boss.

MURRAY IN MELBOURNE

Sir Andy Murray goes into a Grand Slam tennis event as the number one seed for the first time, as the 2017 Slam season gets going in the early hours of Monday morning with the Australian Open at Melbourne Park. The world number one was beaten by his old nemesis Novak Djokovic at last week’s Qatar Open final with both men in the top form. Djokovic has the massive previous upper hand in Melbourne, having beaten the Scot four times previously in the Aussie final, but a lot has happened in the last year, with Murray boosted by the coaching partnership of Jamie Delgado and Ivan Lendl, whilst the Serb has parted company with German ace, Boris Becker. Angelique Kerber is top of the women's draw and bidding to defend her Australian Open crown, after upsetting Serena Williams in the final there last year. British number one Johanna Konta is seeded ninth. Konta made a superb run to the Australian Open semi-finals last year before eventually falling to Kerber. The Brit is in good form, having made it to tomorrow’s Sydney International final against Agnieszka Radwanska.
