POPPIES ON PARADE TORREVIEJA LAUNCHES RBL APPEAL The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal on the Costa Blanca got off to a flying start last Wednesday, with Torrevieja the setting for the 2014 launch parade. The event, which was staged in Benidorm last year, attracted good weather and plenty of spectators, with the procession finishing up close to the Old Man of the Sea statue on Paseo Juan Aparico. The Torrevieja Pipes and Drums lead in the standards of the RBL, along with Legion members; representatives of local ex-servicemen’s groups; two Chelsea Pensioners; Torrevieja Mayor, Eduardo Dolon and local councillors; British Vice Consul, Lloyd Milen; and Nigel Hails, chairman of The Royal British Legion in Spain, District North. A two minutes silence was observed as everybody paid homage to the servicemen and women who lost their lives during the two World Wars as well as more recent conflicts. A

series of speeches followed including a heartfelt appeal from the district Poppy Appeal co-ordinator, Robin Hargrave (pictured), asking people to give generously, after 171 thousand euros was raised in 2013. The commemoration finished with the playing of the Spanish and UK national anthems.

“Sun rays after the storm”

LIKE A ROLLING STONE

A British couple have quit their Cartagena area seaside home, amidst fears of a second landslide, after one took down their neighbour’s home on El Portus beach in July. Gary and Sharon Moffat bought their two-storey beachside house seven years ago but had no realistic option but to leave after a dramatic demolition next door over the summer. The unhappy Mancunians, in an interview with the La Verdad newspaper(pictured in front of their white property), said that they had nowhere else to stay in the area and flew back to England on Monday to stay with relatives as options are looked at. The couple did not witness the actual landslide that destroyed the adjoining bungalow as Gary was getting medical treatment, and since discovering

what happened on July 1st, they’ve had to make do with staying in their caravan, which they had to get rid of due to lack of money”. "We had to sell our caravan, in part to pay for us to stay in a hotel”, said Sharon, “but we will return and hire a lawyer”. “We have everything in order, like the certificate of occupancy, property tax receipts and other documentation”, added Gary. “We therefore believe that Cartagena Council has to provide a place for us to live while solving the problem of our house.” The council are taking advice from Cartagena University experts on trying to work on a solution to the problem which has been in the area for twenty years, with the neighbourhood association pressing for urgent action.

RICH KIDS RUN

Two 11 year old Murcia region children left their Yecla home carrying 34 thousand euros in cash, having stolen the money from one of their parents homes, eventually ending up in Madrid. Their incredible journey started when they caught a bus to Jumilla, and then were helped by a 64 year old taxi driver who drove them to Villena railway station (pictured) in Alicante Province, and who authorised their train journey at the ticket office. The man was arrested by the National Police on the grounds that he knew that the children were minors without an adult with them; in addition to signing documents at the ticket office approving their rail travel, as well as being aware that they were carrying a substantial amount of money. A nationwide alert found the youngsters safe and sound in a Madrid suburb on Saturday September 27th.

PADRON PUSH

Torrevieja’s International Residents Office (OARI) is in the vanguard of a new campaign to make sure that all overseas residents are on the local padron and also get the right to vote in local elections. The OARI team based at the Municipal Tourist Office on Paseo Vista Alegre will provide a service for padron renewal every Tuesday and Wednesday between 9.00am and

11.00am for residents to make sure that they are up to date and stay on the registers. In keeping with many other parts of the Costa Blanca, Torrevieja is set to loose thousands of overseas names from the padron due to people leaving the area or not bothering to re-register, which will see the city in turn lose out on funding as well as cut back in the number of elected councillors.

DEATH ON THE ROCK The body of a 70 year old British man was pulled out of the waters of Cala del Tío Ximo in Benidorm on Sunday. He’d been reported missing by family members on the Saturday, and divers eventually spotted his body lying on some rocks, with a helicopter being brought in to help lift it out.

FLYING HIGH

Alicante-Elche airport continues to have a record breaking year, with just over one million passengers using it during September, up by two point five per cent on the same month last year. Over 474 thousand British travellers used the facilities, which accounted for 45 per cent of the total which saw 1,049.176 passengers going through the gates.

GUILTY AS CHARGED

A Cartagena jury has found a man guilty of strangling his aunt and uncle in Santiago de la Ribera in December 2012. Jose Miguel RC went to his relative’s house claiming to have had three days without sleep and having taken a cocktail of drugs including LSD, ecstasy, and amphetamines. Prosecutors have called for 46 years behind bars for the defendant, with the judge warning the murderer that he face many years in jail.

ON THE RUN

A police car was rammed in Orihuela City last Saturday afternoon after a driver refused to stop at a local police checkpoint. National Police reinforcements were called in and they managed to catch the man after a chase which saw three shots being fired at his car, which was found to contain what reports described as a large quantity of drugs. The pursuit ended with the fugitive ramming a cop car, but nobody was hurt in the drama. He’s was charged with drug possession and dealing; dangerous driving; and attempted murder.

FAMILY TRAUMA

DOGHOUSE CLASH HITS COURT

A dispute between a Valencian deputy and a British woman which resulted in an altercation at an Orihuela animal shelter is to go before the Valencian Supreme Court, with the prosecutor calling for the politician to be jailed for one and a half years and for compensation to be paid to the victim of over 56 thousand euros. As reported in The Courier earlier this year, Elisa Diaz, the daughter of ex-Alicante Mayor, Luis Diaz Alperi, is being accused of assault after allegedly striking a woman at the shelter in in San Bartolomé in August last year when they were both walking dogs. It’s alleged that Diaz, who stringently denies the accusations, struck the woman after a heated discussion, with the victim stating that a blow had made her go deaf in her left ear. If Diaz is convicted, she would not be able stand in next May’s regional elections.

NOT ON A HIGH

The body of a Manchester father is lying in a Spanish morgue after he died on holiday in Benidorm and his insurance company won’t cough up to fly him home. Thomas Owens, 59, was chatting with a friend during a lad’s holiday in a Benidorm bar on Thursday October 2nd when he slumped over dead - the victim of sudden heart failure. Paramedics were called but Thomas could not be saved and his body was taken to a local hospital. His family - wife of 39 years Anne and the couple’s six devastated children - now face a desperate struggle to pay for his body to be brought home. They have been quoted £4,000 to fly him back. Tommy had heart surgery to fit a microvalve in 2005 and a pacemaker fitted in 2012. His family say he had been given the all-clear to fly at a hospital appointment but may have not understood the insurance form or filled it out wrongly. His insurance company, StaySure, have confirmed he did not declare his heart condition or pacemaker when he bought the policy.

Seven drug peddlers have been collared by the National Police who also seized half a kilo of cocaine. The Spaniards, aged between 31 and 57, were arrested after a two month operation that saw them detained in raids in Daya Nueva, Elche, and Guardamar. Two air rifles in addition to three cars and drugs paraphernalia were taken away, with the gang accused of distributing cocaine in places like Guardamar, Almoradi, Dolores, and Daya Nueva.

BUNGED UP

BIG FRAUD

A lorry caused a stink on the A7 route south of Murcia City heading towards Almeria last week when it dumped a whole load of manure on the busy southbound carriageway. The road was blocked for nearly three hours causing big queues and delays as the mess was cleared up. The Guardia Civil arrested the 43 year old driver, who apparently began his journey from an industrial estate in Molina de Segura.

TUNNEL PLUGGED

The tunnel used in August’s failed bank heist in Elche is being filled in. The local council has agreed that the work was essential for safety reasons like subsidence with the 52 metre long structure being created from a house through to a Banco Popular branch in the city. The gang, who have still not been caught, had crawled their way through but were frightened off by a security guard who heard a noise. The emergency work is being paid for by taking money out of the council’s contingency fund.

MONARCH RULES

UK carrier Monarch Airlines is to introduce a new summer route to Alicante-Elche from Leeds Bradford International Airport next year, flying against ideas that the company might be cutting down on its operations as part of its ongoing network review. The airport’s chief executive John Parkin said “We welcome this decision from Monarch in providing increased flight choice for travellers across the Leeds city region and Yorkshire.”

MONTE STINK

The opposition Partido Popular group in Los Montesinos have complained about the slow cleanup operation after the town’s traditional Virgen del Pilar celebrations, which finished with a grand firework display on Sunday. They’ve said the post-event cleansing was far too tardy and too many smells caused by rubbish have lingered around the area.

19 people, most of them of African origin, have been arrested in a National police operation to smash a ring arranging fake marriages and bogus social security documents across Spain, including the Murcia City and Orihuela areas. Marriages involving women from Africa were registered in Malaga and in the Alcantarilla area of Murcia with false statements and fake ID documents, with the gang said to be led by a Nigerian pastor who had lived in Spain for a number of years. Seven arrests were made in the Murcia region and six in Alicante Province with bogus companies also being set up with the intent of defrauding Spain’s Social Security system.

RESERVOIR DOG

There was a happy ending to a dog being spotted in a reservoir in the Roldan area. Civil protection officers were called in to the waters at Lo Ferro where they coaxed the four legged swimmer out onto dry land.

NOT SO POPULAR?

ARTICHOKE HEAVEN Artichokes are cool! That’s the message from the Vega Baja branch of the Artichoke Association who’ve been in Madrid this week at a Fruit and Vegetable trade fair. Around 12 growers from the area, including Almoradi, were at the “Fruit Attraction” show for the second year after a successful visit in 2013. The show promotes fresh produce for both the domestic and international market.

A Partido Popular office in Catral has become the second property belonging to the political party to be vandalised in the area in a matter of days. The outside of their building was daubed at the end of last week with the word Excalibur, which was the name of the dog that was put down and owned by the Madrid-based Ebola victim, Teresa Romero. A complaint has been filed with the Guardia Civil, who also got a complaint earlier in the week about flags being stolen from the PP office in Los Montesinos.

BOGUS MAG FRESH LOOK UPDATE

Torrevieja’s Mayor, Eduardo Dolon, has been checking out some of the improvements being made to the Los Balcones area of the city in the Parque Reina de la Sal by the employment workshop team. Dolon said he hopes for more state money for other work that needs to be done around the area. 22 students have been part of the Los Balcones team working on improving the appearance of the roundabouts as well as seating and picnic areas in addition to a gazebo and a jogging track. The Mayor said that he wanted similar employment projects for the La Siesta and La Mata areas.

BEACH REPAIRS

Recent storm damage to the beaches at La Marina and Arenales del Sol is being dealt with by Elche council. Also the surface of the play area on Avenida de Tirajana in Arenales has been repaired next week.

17 more arrests have been made in connection to the scam involving fake police magazines and money being taken from advertisers that were conned into believing they were advertising in genuine publications and websites. Most of the 52 arrested last month were from the Elche area, as reported in The Courier, and police have now uprated the scam to be perhaps worth around 31 million euros as opposed to previous estimates that were half that figure.

GANG SMASHED

An eight strong burglary gang that operated around the Crevillente area has been broken by the Guardia Civil under Operation Parkour. The all-male gang, which included four members aged between 16 and 20, would carry out extensive surveillance operations before pouncing on some 32 properties as well as stealing cars. 15 thousand euros of stolen jewellery has been recovered.

TOP TAPAS

Torrevieja’s bars, cafes, and restaurants have until Tuesday October 28th to register to take part in the eleventh Top Road/Tapas event next month. Two types of tapas and drink will be offered in two categories at two euros, and two euros fifty cents for a “Gourmet” range. Forms can be obtained from the Main Tourist Office on Paseo Vista Alegre or via rutadelatapatorrevieja.com. The event will be staged over two weekends starting on Thursday November 20th, with an entry fee of 50 euros.

FREE INFO

Ten information boards are being placed around strategic locations on the Orihuela Costa. Street maps in addition to details of municipal services and key phone numbers are being displayed for the benefit of residents and tourists, with the boards being put outside urbanisation and shopping area entrances.

DRAINING WORK

Almoradi’s sewage system is being renewed at a cost of one and a half million euros, with the priority being to replace 50 year old pipes, some of which have been affected by asbestos. Almoradi Mayor, Antonio Angel Hurtado, who inspected some of the work with Hidraqua managers, appealed for local people to be patient and to put up with some of the temporary inconvenience as the project would bring a major benefit to the area.

TUNING IN

Thousands of TV viewers who watch the Spanish terrestrial channels on the free to view TDT system may need to have their aerials changed or re-positioned by the end of the year, as channel allocations change to accommodate mobile 4G services. Many community aerial systems will be affected, as well as some domestic installations. The change- over is claimed to start from mid-November with the process being completed by December 31st. A Valencian region aerial installers spokesman said that he expected and was getting an avalanche of requests, and criticised the authorities for leaving it all until the last minute. European Union money is set to be used to subsidise any changes, but nobody has any idea how and when it will happen.

OUT WITH CATRAL CUTS THE OLD

Daya Vieja’s streets are to be re-named to remove links to the Franco dictatorship era, which ended with the General’s death in 1975. Roads like Calle Carmen Polo, General Moscardó and Avenida Jose Antonio will have new titles featuring different people with stronger democratic credentials.

Catral council is looking to slash its electricity bills by introducing more new energy saving LED street lights across the area. The annual bill for lighting is around 300 thousand euros a year, and by replacing 222 street slights, it’s estimated that the council would save close to 50 thousand euros per annum. The second phase of the energy saving plan costs 120 thousand euros, 95 per cent of which is being funded by the Alicante Provincial Council.

editor@thecourier.es editor@thecourier.es COURIER POSTBAG: YOUR VIEWS ON OUR NEWS

DIRTY FUEL RIDDLE

I was pleased to read in The Courier a fortnight ago that Carrefour is looking after their younger customers with a new discount card. I wonder if there is some age discrimination going on, but credit to them, though my past experience shows that they need to improve on their customer service. I used to fuel up my car exclusively at Carrefour, and then after filling it up with over 40 litres of diesel at the company’s San Juan outlet, my car broke down, the problem being dirty fuel which left me with a bill of 300 euros. I reported this to my local store in Torrevieja and the complaint was passed onto the Madrid head office who promised me a reply. None came despite repeated journeys to Torrevieja, and eventually a copy of a letter was faxed to the San Juan service station, denying any responsibility for dirty fuel from Torrevieja, with no reference made to San Juan! I wrote back and clarified the exact details including the circumstances of the contamination, and then spent three months chasing up a written reply from Madrid with regular visits to the Torrevieja store, and a countless stream of excuses. All I wanted was compensation for my financial loss, not for the loss of a day’s holiday

which had been a by-product of the breakdown. Eventually, in November, I

gave up on the excuses and delays, and took out a denuncia and a Hoja De Reclamaciones. In response to the denuncia, all Carrefour did was send their original denial that the car was not contaminated in Torrevieja. That is exactly right! The car was contaminated at the San Juan store! The Adjudicators

accepted their submission without hesitation despite me providing kilometre readings, dates and receipts of all fuel purchased prior to and including the breakdown. In frustration, I wrote to Carrefour’s Chief Executive, but I got a reply from their Service Station boss, offering a card loaded with 60 euros of Carrefour credit, with the money being a recognition of my many visits to the Torrevieja store chasing a promised letter from Madrid that never arrived. He denied I was lied to and that letters were sent but were “undeliverable”. I was far from happy and have had not had a reply from subsequent registered letters I had sent them, and they refused to reply by e-mail and would not let me have a direct phone contact number!! Since the original incident, I’ve switched to the Cepsa forecourts, and I enjoy their friendly service, and it’s even cheaper than Carrefour, who we only go to if there are any special offers. To this day I still don’t know how that dirty fuel got in my car if it wasn’t Carrefour. Yours Faithfully David Dawson El Raso

WRONG IMAGE As a local businessman and president of the business association OC Avanza, I would like to draw public attention to the operation of three illegal brothels in the Cabo Roig area, with these establishments having sex-workers sitting provocatively in scanty clothing on the open terraces brazenly soliciting any male passer-by to have a good time with them. It does not matter if the men are with their families or wives. Is a family whose father is aggressively propositioned by prostitutes in their presence likely to return to Orihuela Costa for their next family holiday? This is not what the residents or busi-

nesses of Orihuela Costa want as part of our respectable community. These illegal businesses are not good for coastal residents, businesses or tourists. The town hall police (Policia Local) can close down businesses that do not comply with regulations, so why are these illegal brothels still open? Has the town hall granted these illegal brothels an opening license? Have the illegal brothels even applied for opening licenses? If not, then these disgraceful places should be closed down immediately by the town hall police. Raymond Kearney President, OC Avanza

SPANISH NEWS

SPANISH PRIDE

Spain’s Hispanidad/Columbus Day passed some people by last Sunday with the fact that the national holiday landed at the weekend. In the front row of the parade in Madrid were the new King and Queen of Spain, with their two daughters. King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia presided over their first October 12th National Day parade in the capital since ascending to

the throne following the abdication of King Juan Carlos in June. The Royal Family paid homage at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Plaza Neptuno, before overseeing a parade involving around 3,000 military personnel. They were joined by Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy and most of his cabinet ministers. The presidents of the majority of Spain's 17 Autonomous Communities were also present, although Catalan President, Artur Mas and Inigo Urkullu, the Basque leader did not attend, as has been their custom in recent years. This year's parade saw a return of the air display from the national airforce, which celebrated its 75th anniversary. A total of 52 aircraft took part in the display, which had been cancelled in recent years due to economic reasons. Following the event, the King and Queen hosted a reception for 1,500 guests at the Royal Palace with all of today’s events said to have cost just over one million euros.

GAME OF MUCHO DINERO

Cameras have started to roll on shooting part of the fifth season of the international TV hit, Game of Thrones in the southern city of Sevilla, with local officials seeing it as a potential big tourist boost. Onlookers held up umbrellas last Friday (October 10th) to protect themselves against driving rain as they tried to look over a pastel coloured synthetic canvas set up around the gardens of the Real Alcazar palace. The barrier was set up to keep plot details of the series a secret. The palace, a masterpiece of Islamic architecture in old Sevilla packed with columned courtyards and elaborately tiled halls, said on its website that it will undergo "partial closures" until the end of October during the filming of the series. Producers have reportedly

obtained special permission to tint the waters of the pools of the palace's courtyard gardens dark blue for one scene of the fifth season of the series, which started filming in Northern Ireland earlier this year. They will use an eco-friendly product that evaporates several days after being used in the water, according to daily newspaper ABC. The Real Alcazar is one of Sevilla's top tourist attractions. It draws over 3,000 visitors a day, and the oldest parts of the sprawling complex date back to the 10th century. After filming wraps up in Sevilla, the crew will later this month move on to Osuna, a small hilltop town surrounded by olive groves located about 80 kilometres away which will reportedly serve as the backdrop for a battle scene. Osuna

city hall says visitor numbers to the town are already up by around 15 percent since producers of the series announced at the start of July that it would film part of the fifth season there. Hotels in the town of around 18,000 residents are fully booked during the second half of October, while a tapas bar in the town has introduced a special menu with dishes named after "Game of Thrones" characters. Producer Fresco Film services based in Malaga said it received over 86,000 applications to audition for extra roles. The company selected 4,000 people to come to auditions and will hire 550 people to work as extras per day over 17 days of filming, said the company's executive producer Peter Welter.

SPOTS BEFORE OUR EYES THERE was great excitement down at the pub the other evening. We hosteliers were taking part in our inaugural evening of intellectual stimulation. And it was all thanks to our latest member. Andromeda Arkwright, the first female to grace our male stronghold with her regular presence, had proved to be a huge success with the blokes, initially because she treated us to frequent rounds of drinks. But now that we knew her better, we adored her because she was a lovely lady with a delightful personality -- who continued to treat us to frequent rounds of drinks. Dave the barman was of course ecstatically in love with Andromeda. His heart had never been so full because his cash till had never been so full. Not everyone was thrilled to be in Andromeda's company. Daft Barry was still a bit wary of seeing a woman at the bar. He wasn't being sexist. It was just that Barry was frightened of change. And, boy, had things changed. Andromeda had installed herself on the stool formerly occupied by the pub discussion group's founder and mentor Ol' Red Eyes who had not been best pleased with developments. But what did he expect when he was rarely to be found sitting on his stool owing to his propensity for sleeping on the pub floor. 'Just because I am inclined to doze off does not entitle someone to steal my favourite stool,' Ol' Red Eyes argued. 'That's the whole point,' argued back Dave the barman. 'It is literally your inclination which tips you off the stool and onto the floor and thus leaves the seat with vacant possession. I don't even know why you are complaining. You can still see the optics from a horizontal position.' Ol' Red Eyes opened one rheumy peeper and growled: 'That Andromeda Arkwright is a dominatrix.' Daft Barry's eyes lit up. 'She's a dominatrix? Wow! It's been ages since I've enjoyed a good game of dominoes. Can we play now?' It wasn't that Barry was being obtuse by choice. It's just that the poor lad was a bit slow on the uptake. However, we pub discussion group members were, if nothing else, an accommodating and patient bunch of folk. But not tonight we

weren't! We were all too excited about the evening ahead. After chucking bits of torn-up beer mats and other debris at Barry for being daft, we explained to him that we were preparing for our inaugural bout of intellectual stimulation

and that we were just waiting for Andromeda to arrive to tell us what she had planned. 'So why isn't she here already?' grumbled Ol' Red Eyes. 'Because she's at the shops buying toys to distribute at

the local orphanage,' answered Dave the barman. 'Has she no sense of priorities?' Ol' Red Eyes further grumbled. 'You miserable old beggar!' snapped Dave the barman. 'Have you no sense of shame?' Then he paused for a moment before adding: 'However, I do hope Andromeda has some money left over from the orphanage cash to buy you undeserving lot a couple of rounds of drinks.' Just at that moment there came a yell from outside. 'She's coming!' The voice belonged to Fag Ash Bill who had spotted Andromeda Arkwright approaching the pub. Bill was one of our most committed regulars although he rarely entered the premises. He preferred to chain-smoke his never-ending supply of cigarettes on the pavement rather than risk lighting up inside the hostelry and suffer the indignity of being thrown out and barred for life by his good friend Dave the barman. 'You're looking very resplendent in your smart brown suit, Bill,' said Andromeda as she neared the pub entrance. 'Thank you,' said Fag Ash Bill, blushing deeply. 'But actually my suit was blue when I left the house an hour ago. It must be the nicotine stains.' 'Never mind,' said Andromeda. 'May I at least compliment you on your fawn leather gloves.' Fag Ash Bill appeared puzzled as he stared down at his hands. 'But I'm not wearing gloves,' he pointed out. 'So what's the plan, ma'am?' asked Dave the barman as Andromeda climbed onto her stool at the bar. ('That's not her stool. It's MY stool,' mumbled Ol' Red Eyes from the floor.) 'I promised you an evening of intellectual stimulation and that's what we're gonna have,' pledged Andromeda Arkwright. 'But not tonight. On this inaugural occasion I want to loosen and stretch your mental capabilities which for so long have lain dormant. 'And we're going to do this with several warm-up games . . . of dominoes.' Daft Barry let out a triumphant whoop. 'Yippee! Let's have a whip-round for the dominatrix!'

of background. Students do not have to prove their worthiness for a place. Instead, the school aims to stay small and works individually with each pupil to achieve the best that they are capable of within a ¨home from home¨ environment and with very pleasing results. Despite its small size, Phoenix´portfolio now boasts nursery, preschool, primary, secondary and college with the youngest pupil just a year old and the oldest not willing to reveal her age! The school now has a purpose built nursery with its own covered and secure play area and a bright and colourful classroom divided into sections for quiet time, lunch time, messy play and book corner. There is a dedicated area for primary and also a separate space for Secondary although the school comes together regularly for special events and assemblies. After the success of its Spanish A level last year, the school has also added Maths, English, Business and Accountancy to its list and is delight-

ed that all but one of its Year 11 students have returned to study, together with a handful of new students from outside the school. The school has also had success for many years in educating students from Spanish schools in English, Spanish and Maths iGCSEs. Phoenix International School follows the British National Curriculum and has achieved NABSS accreditation (National Association of British Schools in Spain) thus parents can feel assured that the school has jumped through all the necessary hoops of quality assurance. In addition, the school has been accredited since 2008 with the Exam Board, Edexcel owned by the American giant, Pearson and its exam success has just got better and better. Phoenix International School is open from 9 until 4 everyday and has an open door policy. Feel free to pop in to look round or contact the school to make an appointment on 965 720 785, www.phoenixinternationalschool.com.

PHOENIX INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL As you step into Phoenix International School, you can feel the buzz of a school that is driven by positive, family values. It has been just over a year now since the new management at Phoenix changed the name of the school and in doing so, it has successfully juggled old and new by retaining many of its original staff team whilst also introducing some new teachers. The result is a strong group of dedicated and professional staff who share the same goals and vision for the future and who have the enthusiasm to drive the school forward. The benefit to pupils is apparent all of whom are thriving under the new regime. The school´s brilliant exam results bear testament to the efforts of both the staff and students and this is an achievement indeed given that the school is the only private institution which does not require students to pass an entry exam before being accepted. The ethos of the school is an inclusive one. Everyone is welcome regardless

Balcón de la Costa Blanca in the town dug into their pockets for a raffle and an Ice Bucket challenge. Sue Thorne, the owner (in pink), took a very wet hit for team Whispers: - “I must have been mad but it was a lot of fun and we know our efforts are going to a great local cause”. Pictured with Sue at the presentation are Ian, a Whispers regular and Food Bank worker; Mercedes, Food Bank manager; and Manolo Gomez, the President of The Neighbours Association ‘San Miguel Arcange’.

FAITH ON THE MEND

A special gel sock developed for a dolphin with a prosthetic tail is being sent from America to Spain to help a neglected pony whose leg was amputated three years ago. Faith the pony was found in 2010 with a mutilated foreleg after she was left for days badly entangled in her own rope. She was rescued by the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales but, despite their best efforts, Faith’s leg had to be amputated and she earned fame as Spain’s first pony to be fitted with a prosthetic leg. Rescue centre co-founder Sue Weeding said the special gel sock will help cushion Faith’s stump from her prosthetic leg, preventing rubbing and chafing. The special gel sock was developed to help Winter the dolphin in America, whose tail had to be amputated after she was caught in a crab trap. Winter’s Gel has since been developed for humans, helping thousands of amputees. “We tried it out a year ago on Faith and it was so good that she’s actually worn it out and needs a new one,” Sue said. For now, Faith remains at the Equihealth Veterinarios clinic in Barcelona, cared for by a team of veterinarians including Gasper Castelijns, who served Spain’s 2012 equestrian Olympic team and helps the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre with specialist cases.

SUES BIG NIGHT

Sue Gibson, who runs the Suzi4fitz exercise and dance classes has joined forces with local entertainers to produce an ‘Evening of Entertainment’ at the Escuela de Musica in Los Montesinos. THE BEST OF FRIENDS

Many of you will be familiar with the saying, “they fight like cat and dog”, but this saying has never made any sense to me.We run our own rescue centre with many dogs and cats and they are all friends. Billy, my German Shepherd lives for cats and kittens. He simply worships them. He cleans them, follows them everywhere and even tries to pick the kittens up! One of our cats, Gizmo, sleeps with our dogs, eats with them, goes for walks with them and plays with them. When I feed ten of my dogs, Gizmo is right in the middle of them with his little bowl of goodies! It is a funny sight, but one that warms my heart each time. We rescued one of our dogs a few years ago, Sanchez Rodriguez, at the same time as when we

rescued Gizmo and they had their own little crate at night that they use to share. Watching them both cuddling each night was simply brilliant. So that saying for me is simply a myth. Different species of animals can love each other and care for each other and many of these relationships are some of the most beautiful you will ever see in the animal world. In my household, I have some very powerful dogs. Billy for instance is a 45 kilo German Shepherd. When I walk him people just stare, because they just cannot believe how big he is. But believe it or not, it will be the one kilo kitten who rules over all of our dogs! The one kilo kitten will also be the cleanest kitten you will have ever met, as Billy gives his daily power wash, with his tongue being bigger than the kitten itself! The two species though are very different. The dog wants to be with you 24 hours a day. The cat, well

not as much as some are very independent. Many, do their own thing, as they

happen, it is simply a game to the dog. I have seen on many occasions a dog cor-

wander off into the distance, and we are left wondering, where do you go, who do you meet? There is a certain mystery about a cat. I believe there are two types of cat. The one who just stands there when they see a dog, or the one that does an impression of Usain Bolt. Most dogs will then chase the cat, but whenever I have seen this

ner a cat after chasing and they then don’t know what to do. They just stand there as if to say, “well I’ve caught you, do you want to be buddies?” It has often been written that cats are very territorial and will fight for their own space, but again this is something I do not see. We currently have eleven cats and behind our house, there is a derelict house,

She crawled up to the Pets in Spain rescuers on her tummy as we were leaving the house where we had already rescued 10 dogs and we couldn’t leave her. She is around 6 months old, weighs about 6 kilos and will be medium size when fully grown. Call: 645 469 253. www.petsinspain.com Sally is a small dog and is about 2 years old. ESTRELLA

BONNIE Bonnie was taken in by PEPA only days before she was due to give birth and had been living on the streets. She was painfully thin when she came to us and we set about feeding her up. She has had seven beautiful puppies that have now all gone into foster care

Estrella is ten years old and is a well behaved girl who came to PEPA’s attention when a vet called to say a hunter had brought her in and wanted to put her down. We could not let that happen so we took her on. She is a lovely dog that loves being with people and will follow you around or sit with you. For more information about Estrella please telephone the PEPA helpline on 650 304 746 or email p.e.p.a.animalcharity@gmail.com

where a family of five cats live. We catch them in our house all the time as our cats share their food with them. I woke up the other morning and as I walked past the cat room, there was one of these cats, laying in one of the cat beds, peacefully sleeping away, with his little suitcase next to him. He moved in overnight. So with 16 cats sharing the food and the beds, I never hear a cat fight. This does surprise me, but part of me thinks they are all so chilled out because they are all Spanish cats! When I sit with the cats, it’s almost like you can hear them whispering to each other, “tranquilo, tranquilo”! Where we live, in Pinoso, there is a street cat we have named Lenny. He is always to be found at the bottom of the steps of the clock tower and he must be the most laid back animal I have ever met in my life. Everyone feeds him and gives him water and

everyone loves him. He just lays in the sun each day, waiting for his worshippers to give him his next meal. Everytime I see Lenny, he is either sleeping or eating. That is why we are convinced he is a boy! Sorry, I couldn’t resist that one! So I prefer my saying to be, “they love each other like cats and dogs”, because from my experience that is all I have witnessed. www.thedogyouneed.c om is a registered charity, where we rehabilitate the most severely abused animals. FINDING YOUR VOICE

Is what you say as important as how you say it? Or should I say, do some people have a better accent for orating ideas than others? There have been many great orators in the history of the UK, from the gruff vocals of Winston Churchill to the crisp tones of Stephen Fry, although their voices are at completely different levels of the spectrum they still share one trait; the ability to make people listen. I was watching a video recently of clips of quotes from Christopher Hitchens. If you don´t know who he is I will try and explain, although he seems to have been overall, a professional talker, with beliefs about everything from God and religion to politics. He was an author and journalist although he is most famous for telling people they were basically crazy for believing anything that was against his ideals. The reason for mentioning him in this is that he was a privately educated person with the typical upper middle class accent, and therefore there was a tone to his voice that was at times dismissive and other times intriguing. It is interesting to listen to anyone with strong views, but of course it becomes almost amusing when the ideals being recounted are those that you are in agreement with. However the way he spoke gave a resonance to his arguments, and he spoke as though his was the only opinion worth listening to but in a sensible way. The aforementioned, Stephen Fry is another critic of parts of society who puts his arguments across in a sophisticated language which some people would struggle to understand, and those, unfortunately are the very ones who should be listening, so why does he do it? Why choose three syllable words when one syllable would suffice? Is it because of his education that he is unable to lower his vocabulary or is it because he doesn´t care, and his speeches are aimed at

those at his level? He does however, regardless of the vocabulary, have a very clear voice that people want to listen to. It has a crisp feel that dances off his tongue, and you just

know when he opens his mouth that he will say something important, and more impressively he will know exactly what he is talking about. There is no precociousness in the way he speaks. It is as though he does not know any other way to articulate his ideas. Sir Winston Churchill had a completely different voice. The deep slurred vocals forced their way out of his half opened mouth as he almost spat the now famous words that

have gone down in history as some of the most influential quotes ever recorded. Often seen with a big cigar between his lips, there was none of the cocky upper-class language of those before. Churchill was a unique man, the opposite end of the political spectrum to Hitchens but they were incredibly alike. Both felt the ability to say what they wanted and were able to lead by their words. So what does make a good orator? What makes someone talk and people listen? It can´t just be the topic of conversation; after all both spoke about different subjects and had different views, so it couldn´t be the accent, although both were middle to upper class British yet their voices were contrasting. My point of view is that it was the way that they spoke that made them popular in debates and what made Churchill a great leader and Hitchens a great observer. The eloquent way they made their points put them at the forefront of their own peer groups. We all have ideas, some stronger than others, yet we don’t all have the ability to talk about them in a way that is interesting and that makes people want to pay money to hear them. It can´t just be the words that are used however, it is also the manner of speaking and the style that is adopted. There have been many great speakers throughout time, from all four corners of the globe, but the one thing they all have in common is the ability to reach out to the man (or woman) on the street and touch them with their words. Whether we agree or disagree, we can all feel the passion in those phrases, and we know that the speaker is aware of the gravity of their expression. For me, Hitchens summed up life in one quote: ´Take the risk of thinking for yourself, much more happiness, truth, beauty, and wisdom will come to you that way´.

RAJOY ON THE RACK

It’s great to put your feet up and watch the established political parties squirming all over the place whether it be in the UK or here in Spain. There are loads of similarities around at the moment with elections pending next year in both countries, and new groupings set to cause chaos with the established order, with the old boys not knowing what the hell to do about it. Don’t you just love it? Voters have to go to the polls in Spain before the end of December next year, and the old boys of the ruling Partido Popular and the socialist PSOE are in the mire. A recent opinion poll put the PSOE five points ahead of the

PP, probably helped by their new young leader, but the total percentage support for both parties was just over a third of those questioned! The total lack of confidence in the old order is astounding, and in the survey, just behind the PP (on a record low figure) was the newly formed left wing Podemos (We Can) party led by writer Pablo Iglesias Turrion. Its roots come from the antiausterity protests in the country and despite the party only being formed at the start of the year, they’ve captured the imagination of younger voters. If I was Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, I’d be watching my back right now, because time is

not on his side and the scenario looks gloomy. Remember that

the Spanish voting system is based on proportional representation and with the PP just polling 15 per cent, it appears with just over a year to go, that they cannot possibly win,

unless something dramatic happens like the

boost of a new leader. The likely picture right now is that the PSOE David Miliband look-alike, Pedro Sanchez will be in charge of the largest party and that he’ll have to pick up the phone to

Podemos to form a left of centre coalition government. The PP will have frankly nowhere to go to and talk to if a vote was held tomorrow, and that’s why I believe (despite having the guts to take some tough economic decisions), Rajoy might just be having some sleepless nights waiting for somebody to stab him in the back. Rajoy hasn’t done himself too many favours either in the bumbled handling of the Ebola outbreak in Spain. He and his ministers have lurched from one ill-informed comment to another, with a lot of flack rightly heading in the direction of Health Minister, Ana Mato. In contrast to the UK where there is a per-

manent committee called COBRA to deal with emergencies, Spain has no equivalent and incredibly it took until the end of last week for the government to announce that it was going form to deal with Ebola. The idea actually came from the PSOE, and the deputy Prime Minister, Soraya Saenz de Santamaria,, will take charge, with Mato kept on the sidelines. The lack of competence from the Madrid government over the Ebola crisis might well end up being a blow too much for the embattled Rajoy, who only a few weeks ago U-turned and scrapped the new abortion law. There’s a smell of Gordon Brown-style inevitability that Rajoy will be sent packing. The question is when and by whom?

WHAT TO DO IF YOU’VE BEEN BURGLED. Statistics in Spain Crime rates in Spain remain among the lowest in the EU according to the latest Interior Ministry crime report. However, since the economic crisis began in 2008, there has been a steep increase in domestic burglaries and theft as a result. In 2012 the number of burglaries in homes rose by 25.4%. The message to expat residents is not to panic. There are some simple precautions to take, as you would back in the UK, such as fitting security grills, installing exterior lights and alarms, being careful about what content is posted on social networks, especially anything to do with trips and holidays away from home. It also helps to take out a quality home insurance policy that will cover your home and its contents should any unfortunate incident occur.

When you discover you’ve been burgled As soon as you discover you’ve been burgled, whether it’s a break-in or theft at your home, first call the police. Don’t touch anything until they arrive. A police report will be needed to process your claim. Then secure your home to avoid further damage, board up any broken windows, make a list of damaged or missing belongings, detail the damage to your home resulting from the burglary, taking photographs of damaged windows or door. At this point, you can call the claims department of your home insurance company. We advise you to have your policy on hand when you call.

Peace-of-mind with Linea Directa We understand that your peace-of-mind is important, especially in your home. Our claims department will take a full statement of the circumstances of the incident. We will check the insurance coverage with you explaining all the procedures. If emergency repairs are required from locksmiths to glaziers, we will help you swiftly handle your claim and get things back to normal as soon as possible. Fortunately, incidents of theft in Spain are relatively small compared to other EU countries, however should you be burgled, your homeowner’s insurance policy will cover the loss or destruction of personal property if it’s stolen from your home.

Hold-up outside the home In many cases, your home insurance policy may cover you for any incidents that occur outside your home. Should you be the victim of a hold-up outside your premises your personal belongings are covered. We will ensure replacement documents are quickly and efficiently dealt with, and if required, arrange the locks on your home to be changed. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. If you would like to contact Linea Directa please call 902 123 161 More information on Linea Directa online at www.lineadirecta.com

CHANGING OF THE OLD GUARD IS UKIP an unstoppable force in Britain today? Well, it seems it certainly will not be stopped between now and the next election and both the Tories and Labour are quaking in their boots. Yes, UKIP won a resounding victory in Clacton, but that was hardly surprising. Douglas Carswell was a popular MP who defected from the Conservatives, knocking his old party which enjoyed a 12,068 majority at the 2010 election - into second place. But in my view, UPIP´s damage to Labour in the other election, in Heywood and Middleton, a staunch Labour stronghold, was even more remarkable. The Labour man should have won by a thumping majority, but it was slashed to a mere 617 votes. And if the very few voters who opted for soppy Lib Dems had voted UKIP, there would be two UKIP MPs in Westminster today. Why do I think UKIP will do as much damage to Labour as the Conservatives? Heywood ought to have been ultrasafe Labour territory; some estimates suggest it was only the 148th most ‘UKIPfriendly’ constituency in the country. Yet there it was, failing to vote in a UKIP MP by a whisker. Why? Well, sadly, there are still many die-hard, cloth-cap Labour supporters who will vote socialist come what may, just as their fathers and grandfathers did before them. But there´s a growing number of Labour supporters who are totally

disenchanted with their leader who comes from a privileged background, has never had a "real" job and just cannot relate to the working classes. It´s no good rabbiting on about "hard working British people" and thinking that by doing so, he´s communicating with the working class. It just doesn´t wash. And the "thinking" socialists know only too well that unbridled European immigration is transferring jobs from UK nationals to immigrants willing to work for less pay, thereby allowing employers to keep wages down. How is that for Labour policy which thinks EU membership is the best thing since sliced bread, smashing the ideals of Labour voters? And this, more than anything else, is pushing voters away from parties who support Britain´s EU membership come what may. The working class have woken up to the fact that their jobs are under threat and their traditional ally, the Labour Party not only is doing nothing to support them, they are actually encouraging further damage by not opposing more immigration. They also realise it was Labour which permitted a mass influx a decade ago. As for the Tories, their predictable bleat after the byelection result was announced was that UKIP was taking Tory votes and the only winner would be Labour. No! No! No! If, as I predict, UKIP will take votes

away from Labour, Tories, Lib Dems and Green in more or less proportionately equal numbers, the gainers will only be UKIP, and if the mass exodus is great enough, then a landslide away from the hateful two party system will be the end result. Build it and they will come is what I wrote in

ing two enemies fighting each other to the death - you can imagine the thoughts going through their minds. That´s why the Turks did not cross the border and help defend the besieged town. How can the West have anything to do with any of them when in reality they are all as bad as each other?

another context recently. Vote for them and they will arrive, is the variation that applies here. Part of me so wishes it will happen. Another part is anxious as to what it might bring for us expats if Britain pulls out of Europe. Have you seen the pictures coming from Turkey of masses of tanks lined up along the border with Syria, with Turks watching as IS extremists battle to take a Kurdish town on its border? Here is the Muslim world at its worst (or should I say norm?). All, or virtually all of them Muslim, but fighting and killing each other. The Kurds are in the main Sunni Muslim, while the Turks are Shia and the IS fighters are extremists and you could say extreme Sunni. In Turkish eyes they are watch-

What´s the saying? A plague of curses on all their houses! Didn´t that phrase come from the Arab world? The West should put a ring of steel around the Muslim world and let them either kill each other or sort themselves out. Talking about a ring of steal, the world should do something similar over the horror of the Ebola outbreak. This appalling disease is totally out of control over a large area of west Africa and needs Draconian measures to control. It reminds me of the pitiful way the world dealt with the HIV/AIDS outbreak a generation or so ago. Instead of containing the disease in known areas and properly isolating carriers, it allowed them to remain in the community and have sex, readily infecting others.

And the result? It´s a worldwide disease now. Thankfully it is not quite such a disaster because it can be partially controlled today by drugs, which is lengthening the lives of those affected. If it hadn´t, millions of people in the world would now be dead. And why did it become a world-wide pandemic? Because, in the early stages of the disease, people were not isolated and were allowed to spread it. Even 2,000 years ago, the Romans had the answer when it came with leprosy. No, they couldn´t cure it, and so they isolated the victims. Sadly they lived in terrible conditions which would not have been the case today, but even back then they realised that they had to keep infected people away from those who were well. But what are we doing in the 21st century? Allowing the possibility of people infected with Ebola to get on planes from clearly affected areas and travel all over the world. Crazy or what? That part of Africa should have been put in immediate lock down, with teams of doctors and experts which all the equipment they needed, to control the disease. Yes, they were dealing with uneducated people whose belief was that the witch doctor would be the one to give them a cure, or doctors among them were infecting them, and ignorance makes dealing with the problem far, far more difficult. I just hope that we

don´t see the Ebola virus combine with another or mutate so that it becomes airborne, like flu. If it does, half the world´s population could be wiped out - and all because when s--t happens, it is not dealt with instantly. Let´s hope we don´t hear any more craziness of European or American victims being flown back from Africa to be hospitalised in their home country, greatly increasing the risk of infection spreading through Europe, the Americas or Asia. Sometimes in life you have to be cruel to be kind, and it´s no use thinking of the human rights of one when it puts at risk the human rights of millions. And here´s exactly what I mean about people going forth and spreading HIV/AIDS. A man appeared in court in Seattle after he infected eight people with the disease in eight years. The judge ordered the HIVpositive man to stop spreading the disease and seek treatment. He was also ordered to show up for counselling and to protect future sexual partners. About 50,000 people in the US are newly infected with HIV every year, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). About 16% of the 1.1 million people living with the virus do not know they are infected. Draconian measures were needed years ago to prevent people spreading HIV. This latest case shows just how important it was. Sadly the eight he infected will have to live with the disease and its effects for the rest of their lives. Perhaps one day everyone who wants sex with someone will insist on a medical check before getting between the sheets.

HOMELAND BITES BACK

with ALEX TRELINSKI There’s a good old phrase called “jumping the shark” which is often used on internet forums to discuss TV shows that have gone past their sell-by date and need to be put out of their misery with a cancellation. I thought that Homeland was a reasonable candidate for that merciful release after a weird third season that wildly lurched from sheer boredom to moments of brilliance, ending up in Brody’s execution (I still think he’s alive by the way). So it was with some trepidation that I tuned into the start of series four on Channel

Four last Sunday night, more in a sense of loyalty with fond memories of the great first series. What a pleasant surprise then to see a complete re-boot with new settings, characters, and the troubled Carrie (wonderfully played by Claire Danes) in top form. It’s only one episode but it was far more satisfying than the whole of the last series. Hype can be dangerous, especially when everybody started raving about Gotham, with Channel Five’s new owners coughing up eight million quid for the 16 episode series, which started on Monday. That’s a lot of dosh, and those of you expecting some kind of superhero show would have been left disappointed as this instead is a well-crafted

mix of cop show with little nuggets of Batman familiarity in this prequel tale. A young orphaned Bruce Wayne is told by a newly-arrived copper, James Gordon, that he’ll avenge the killing of the boy’s parents, as well as cleaning up a corrupt Gotham City. It looks

good and has some potential and I’m going stick around to see what happens. Whether it was worth the hysteria that came out of a preview screening for international buyers is a different matter. If you want a good new fun superhero show, then just wait until

the end of the month for The Flash (from the Arrow team) on Sky One, which according to the reviews that I’ve read, ticks all the boxes. No problems for The Walking Dead on FOX UK with series six being announced a few days before the premiere of season five. With just a 24 hour lag behind the US transmission, we don’t have to avoid spoilers and this show, which for most of series four looked like it had “jumped the shark”, has hit the ground running with a great opener featuring new villains in shape of cannibals. I’m

not a natural horror lover, but the tale of a fight for survival is compelling and with a new setting as well, there is a lot to look forward to. The Walking Dead might be an apt description for the 20 candidates jostling to become Alan Sugar’s latest Apprentice as I feasted on two episodes on BBC1 this week. It’s such an enjoyable watch but I’m constantly left wondering every year whether or not these people ever watch the programme, because they keep making the same old mistakes. I hope there is some mass culling as well by the good Lord, as having 20 people in from the start was too many and doesn’t allow time to get know all the different characters properly.

The Story of Top of the Pops 1979 BBC Four - 20:00

A look back at a heady year for the chart show, which recorded its highest audience of 19 million viewers, as physical format singles peaked at four times that number. Social problems in Britain during the Winter of Discontent did not stop inventive musicians from making hay as eager fans queued up to embrace their output, and new wave, 2tone, reggae, rock, folk and electro hits competed for the top slots. Among the featured artists are Gary Numan, Nile Rodgers, Jah Wobble and Woody from Madness.

1/6. New series. Engineer Rob Bell goes on a subterranean adventure as he explores the buried feats of engineering on which the nation relies, amazing natural wonders and the secret places the general public was never meant to see. He begins in Scotland, where he examines the gruesome secrets of the mysterious Sculptor's Cave near Lossiemouth in Moray, before heading to Argyll and Bute to visit a hydroelectric power station buried deep inside the mountain of Ben Cruachan. In the north-west Highlands, Rob squeezes deep into the nation's longest cave system to investigate how the discovery of some remarkably well-preserved prehistoric animal bones is helping scientists to build a picture of life during the Ice Age.

Code Cracker is a crossword puzzle with no clues; instead, every letter of the alphabet has been replaced by a number, the same number representing the same letter throughout the puzzle. All you have to do is decide which letter is represented by which number. In this week's puzzle, 20 represents D and 10 represents G, when these letters have been entered throughout the puzzle, you should have enough information to start guessing words and discovering other letters.

Horoscopes Aries March 21 - April 19 While Mercury is travelling backwards through your chart’s zone of love and friendship, someone close could imagine problems where there are none. If you reassure them, you can avoid misunderstandings in the weeks to come, so spell out where you stand and include them in your plans. A relationship you thought was over could preoccupy you later in the week.

Taurus April 20 - May 20 Making time for your personal goals and interests could seem quite a challenge. Insist that others give you more space and make it clear that you intend to do things your way. A powerful link between your ruler, Venus, and lucky Jupiter midweek is due to help you push through changes that you had postponed, so be determined then.

Gemini May 21 - June 20 An unexpected sequence of events could make you see a certain friendship in a very different light this week. Whether you should show your hand or play for time may seem to be a question with no easy answer. Wait until you see your way ahead more clearly, which you will do later in the week, when lucky Jupiter and romantic Venus are in tune.

Cancer June 21 - July 22 Your domestic situation may preoccupy you now, but do not make a premature commitment or a decision that you may regret. With Mercury, the planet of communication, causing problems and misunderstandings, you need to take a more relaxed, detached approach. The tide turns in your favour soon, so be patient.

Friday, October 17, 2014

By Pandora Leo July 23 - August 22 Events this week could make you wonder if a certain goal is worth pursuing. It is, so do not let your doubts about the future influence the choices you make. If you are open and direct about your feelings, you can also overcome resistance to your plans from someone close. An important friendship enters a new phase as the week ends.

Virgo August 23 - September 22 What you have to offer could soon be in great demand, but with your ruler, Mercury, stirring up confusion in your chart’s financial zone, you may lack confidence, or wonder if you should be less ambitious. You are in a much stronger position than you imagine, so dismiss your doubts, enlist support, and focus on the details of your plan.

Libra September 23 - October 22 With so many powerful links between the planets helping you to cut loose from restrictions and forge new bonds, life should go your way this week if you have faith in your ability to reach your goal. Take a confident approach and do not let doubts about the future hold you back. The rest will follow.

Scorpio October 23 - November 21 With Mercury, the planet of communication, travelling backwards through the skies, you could misread someone’s real intentions or feel that you should change direction. Dismiss your doubts and carry on along your chosen course. You are, in fact, ideally placed to win support from those who count, so be ambitious and determined.

Sagittarius November 22 - December 21 Persuasive Venus and the energising Sun line up with your ruler, lucky Jupiter, this week to put you in a very strong position. Do not let advice from friends or colleagues undermine your confidence or throw you off your stride. If you hold your course a short while longer, you could well find a certain battle is as good as won. The tide is on the turn.

Capricorn December 22 - January 19 If you trust your intuition you can gain important career ground this week. Ignore advice from colleagues and you could also find that someone is unexpectedly prepared to give you backing or support. Do not let a surprising sequence of events throw you off your stride later in the week. It could turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

Aquarius January 20 - February 18 An ambitious goal may seem beyond your reach this week, but do not change direction. With Mercury travelling backwards through the skies and stirring up confusion, you may also wonder if you can rely on someone close. Dismiss your doubts and carry on regardless. Just how strong your hand is should be clear by next weekend.

Pisces February 19 - March 20 With Mercury, the planet of communication, causing conflict in the skies, this is not the time to bring up subjects that you may have been avoiding, or ask for someone’s feedback or support. If you stand back and let events unfold, problems will resolve themselves. All you need to do is have more faith in yourself.

Q

Hi Richard, for the last week or so I have been having problems with my excel spread sheets. I have a few spread sheets with the formulas already in place which I update and the totals naturally update. Over the last week when updating the figures the totals do not update and I’m not sure what has changed. I have attached a spread sheet which I have had problems with; when I change the figures at the top the total at the bottom remains unchanged. Would you please have a look and see if it’s the same when you use it.

Hi Dudley, you could try resetting the printer from within Firefox, do the following… 1. Type about:config in the Location Bar and press Enter. A list of preferences will appear 2. Find the preference print_printer 3. Right-click that preference and select Reset 4. Restart Firefox and see if the problem is resolved

Hi Sam, interesting one this, but I have the answer – formulas have been set to manually update on this spread sheet. You can turn on automatic updates again by doing the following in Excel…

ADVICE: Sheila wanted to know how to make text larger in her web browser. Hi Richard, in my Gmail, it is all very tiny print, how do I get it to stay bigger please? Sheila.

Q

1. 2. 3. 4.

Open up the spread sheet in question. Click the Microsoft Office Button (top left), and then click Excel Options. On the Formulas tab, click Manual under Calculation options, and then click OK. Save your spread sheet

…try to update some cells, you should find that your formulas now calculate automatically.

ADVICE: Uffe wanted to know whether to upgrade to Windows 8.1

Hi Sheila, when you are in Internet Explorer, press CTRL and the ZERO key at the same time and that will reset your zoom, which I assume is causing your problems.

A

Don’t forget you can follow me on twitter @bluemoonspain Alternately why don’t you sign up for my newsletter. You can do this by going to:www.bluemoonsolutions.es and fill in the form that is on any page except the front page.

Q

Hi Richard, One short question, please: Is it worthwhile upgrading to Windows 8.1 (from 8)? Thanks in advance.

A

Hi Uffe, yes you should upgrade to Windows 8.1 if you have Windows 8 already, there are a number of security and appearance enhancements that make it a much better operating system.

15 TIPS FOR CUTTING THE COST OF CAR INSURANCE

The cost of car insurance can take a big chunk out of your driving budget, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Here are 15 tips to help you get your annual premium down. 1. Shop around The Association of British Insurers (ABI) reckons you can save as much as a third on your annual premium, simply by shopping around. So don’t just automatically accept your renewal quote each year. 2. Limit the number of people allowed to drive the car The more people who are covered by a policy, the more it’s likely to cost. Young drivers are particularly expensive to insure, so make sure you remember to take your kids off your policy when they get their own. 3. Request a higher excess Most insurance policies include an excess charge (the amount you have to pay towards any repairs that are claimed for). If you’re prepared to increase this, you can get a reduced premium. 4. Don’t use your car for work Insurance policies that cover only "social, domestic and pleasure" are generally cheapest. 5. Agree to a mileage cap This can earn you a discount simply

because cars that are on the road less often are less likely to be involved in an accident. AA Insurance reckons that accepting a 12,000-mile annual cap would earn a 5 to 10 per cent discount. A 5,000-mile cap can earn even more. This is particularly useful for households with more than one car.

6. Avoid brokers' commission

Direct Line claims that buying through intermediaries can increase the cost of insurance by up to 30 per cent. 7. Buy through the internet Many insurance providers offer an automatic 5 per cent discount for online transactions. 8. Consider downsizing Cars that are worth less and have smaller engines qualify for lower insurance bands, which means they attract lower premiums. 9. Keep your car garaged Keeping your car in a garage or on a drive rather than out on the road can take between 5 and 10 per cent off your premium. 10. Ask for an introductory discount You may be eligible for this, even if you don't have a no claims bonus but have driven a company car - or someone else's car - with a no claims bonus on its policy. Some insurers just offer you a discount because they want your custom. And if you have built up a no claims bonus, say so. 11. Look for ways of protecting your no claims bonus Some policies allow you to make a claim in set circumstances without it affecting your no claims bonus. You'll pay a small premium up front, but it could save you a fortune in the long run. 12. Have a black box fitted to your car This is where the insurer installs a device that monitors how the car is being driven so that careful driving can be rewarded. You can also agree to curfews that limit what times of day you can drive. It works especially well for young drivers. 13. Improve your driving skills A Pass Plus driving test, or similar qualification, can cut the cost of your premium. 14. Don’t assume third party cover is cheaper Third party insurance is the legal minimum, covering you against damage caused to other people’s property and the cost of any compensation for injuries. However, this isn’t always cheaper than fully comprehensive cover, which covers your own vehicle as well, because the insurer can assume you care less about your car and are therefore more likely to have an accident. 15. Don’t pay by direct debit Paying for your insurance in monthly instalments rather than in an annual lump sum - makes it seem more manageable. But it's likely to cost you between 10 and 25 per cent more in the long run.

YOU NEED TO EXERCISE, BUT ARE YOU DOING TOO MUCH?

We all know that exercising is good for our health. There is a mountain of scientific evidence proving so. But besides all the paper work, when you exercise, you feel a lot better in yourself. Regular exercises improves the overall performance of the heart which in turn leads to an increased blood supply to our tissues and organs. And when more blood can get into our tissues and organs, they receive more nutrients and oxygen, and are able to excrete more waste, and the whole body benefits. Exercises also play an important role in

managing some diseases such as Type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is not caused by insulin deficiency, but by insulin resistance. The body can produce enough insulin, but the cells have lost their sensitivity. Exercising improves this sensitivity of cells to insulin, which helps normalize blood sugar levels, and cuts out the need to add insulin injections to those already taking diabetes tablets. Exercising also helps improve brain function and clarity. Those who exercise in the mornings understand how much it helps clear the mind for

the day. When your mind is cluttered, and you take time out and exercise, you usually come back feeling able to handle the situation. Exercises also help our mood by stimulating the body to produce brain chemicals such as serotonin, which help us feel good. And of course one cannot forget one of the most desired benefits of exercising, which is to help lose weight. But like every thing, too much exercise can be very detrimental to health. The body needs time to heal if put under severe stress, and people who exercise excessively do not allow their body to heal. Ideally the only exercise you really need to make a difference to your health is about 30 minutes of brisk walking every day. Researchers have even found that sitting for longer periods of time is actually more damaging than any fitness exercise that is undertaken. And so exercising for an hour, and then spending 4 hours watching TV is actually doing more damage to your health because of the hours spent sitting. DR MACHI MANNU’S ADVICE CLINIC EMAIL YOUR QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS TO CONTACT@MEDB.ES

Q

I am 64 years old, and for the past 20 years I have had stomach problems -pain, discomfort, reflux, diarrhoea, constipation, flatulence – and I have been admitted into hospital a few times because of these problems. I´ve been told that I have irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, ulcers, etc. I have taken antibiotics, prednisolone and many other drugs for so long without much relief and I am now sick of any kind of medication. I follow your articles, and wonder what I can do naturally on my own to help the problem. A good place to start with problems of the digestive system is with the foods you eat. Not just because of food allergies, which is a problem undoubtedly, but because of the toxic nature of some of the foods that we unknowingly eat. And of all the foods we consume today, 2 of the most toxic are Wheat and Diary. You may not want to hear this. Wheat and Dairy make up a chunk of many people´s diet, and many of us have grown up with wheat and diary based foods – yummy soft bread and cream – and we love them. Such foods are very hard to give up, but here is what you have to consider. If you suffer from any form of digestive illness, you should consider removing all traces of dairy and cheese from your diet for at least one month, and if you don´t notice any difference in your health, then you can go back to your old diet if you have to. The problem with wheat and dairy is that they are no longer the foods they use to be. Some people on hearing that wheat can cause harm to the body, argue that bread has been eaten since biblical times, so wheat cannot be that bad. Yes, but the wheat we eat today is just not

A

the same. Wheat is a grain and belongs to the same family as corn, barley, oats and rye. About 40 years ago however, wheat was genetically modified to improve its yield. This was in the mid 1970s, long before the phrase ´Genetic Modification´was coined. The process then was called Hybridization. The modified wheat however is more like´Super Grass´than wheat. It is a completely different plant species than the original plant. It is closely related to many wild grasses than to the original thing. And it is highly toxic. The original wheat is still available but quite rare, and now goes by the name of Spelt wheat. So what is wrong with this new wheat ? It is important to realise that grains in general are low quality foods. They contain less nutrients than many other foods – reason why they are called staple foods. And among grains, wheat contains the least quantity of nutrients and fairly high levels of toxins. But many people could just about get by with the natural form of wheat. Research has shown that many chronic diseases first appeared in human beings when wheat was introduced to our diet thousands of years ago. With genetic modification wheat became super toxic. Wheat is seen by many as a good source of fibre, but the fibre in wheat, known as amylopectin is of a different kind. Unlike other fibres that are not digested until they reach the intestines, the fibre in wheat begins its digestion in the mouth. This is why 2 slices of bread is known to raise blood sugar levels more than 6 tea spoons of pure white sugar. Wheat also contain toxic chemicals such as lectin and gliadin, that cause ´leaky gut syndrome´and other chronic diseases of the digestive system. Our gut has a very tight lining that prevents digesting foods from leaking into surrounding tissues. The toxins in wheat – lectin and gliadin – uncouples this tight lining, causing digesting food to leak

out. This leads to inflammatory reactions that give rise to chronic diseases, including – inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis. Gluten, also found in wheat, is a well known cause of Coeliac disease – a chronic intestinal disease. Adding to the above problems from wheat, is the fact that it is the most cultivated crop in the world, and this means that more chemical pesticides, herbicides, insecticides are used in its cultivation than any other food. And overtime these chemicals build-up in the body with the potential to harm the body. Researchers have observed that since the mid 1970s when this new wheat was introduced, the rate of chronic diseases has climbed through the roof. Dairy is another problem food of our time. Health critics of dairy point out that humans are the only animals that consume milk in adulthood. Lactose is the sugar found in milk, and we are all aware that a good number of us cannot drink milk because of ´lactose intolerance´ and cannot digest lactose. But the problem with milk goes beyond lactose intolerance. Milk contains a protein called caesin, that cannot be digested by human beings. In many, this protein sits in the stomach for a long time, fermenting and giving off

chemicals that create inflammatory problems in the body. In addition, milk contains very high levels of powerful antibiotics and hormones that are added to the food of animals. It may shock you to learn that 80% of all antibiotics produced in the world are consumed by farm animals. These animals are also injected with different types of hormones and other steroids to beef them up before slaughter. These drugs are eventually expressed in the milk of cows. As Wheat and Dairy make up a large proportion of the diet of many people, eliminating them is no easy matter. But it is achievable. For a start, you can replace wheat based foods with similar foods made from rye, barley and oats. So rather than eat the normal wheat bread, you can replace that with rye bread or corn bread. Pasta is also replaced with Rice or Corn pasta. The healthier alternatives to wheat are rye, corn, oats, and rice. Suitable replacements for cows milk are For milk, goats milk, almond or rice milk. These alternatives are easily available from your local supermarkets and market. Almond milk can be prepared very easily at home. Please email your questions to machimannu@gmail.com

Greenside Gossip IVIE DAVIES takes a weekly look at the golf scene - golfdavies@gmail.com

GET A SMART DRESSING DOWN

Golf may seem as simple as hitting a white ball into a hole, but scratch the surface a bit and you will find lots of social implications. Originally, the sport was aimed at socialising, especially among upper class families, and therefore, dress codes were established to appeal to the social elite. Slowly, the outfits evolved a little to be more functional for the game and slightly more fashionable. With more sophisticated fabrics and design, both male and female women golfers started to actually look pretty good! The dress code debate is one that is gathering momentum and I feel is a factor that golf club owners and managers have to be aware of as dress codes do influence the commercial business of golf clubs. This issue seems to divide opinion and, from reading blogs and forums, strongly in some cases! As with most things, ‘one size does not fit all’ and each operation will need to carefully consider what is right for its specific business aims, vision and market – now and in the future. There does seem to be some ‘myths’ about dress codes that seem a little unbalanced and therefore unhelpful in a sensible debate about what is right –

which at the end of the day has to make a decision about what is right. So the

following are examples of discussions that I have heard and read recently. RELAXING THE DRESS CODE WILL LEAD TO A DETERIORATION IN ETIQUETTE AND HONESTY, AND INFER A LESSER QUALITY OF CLIENT I have heard this said numerous times and to some extent, disagree. Let’s face it, regardless of how well dressed they are and complying with the dress code, we all see golfers not rake bunkers or not repair pitch marks, as well as even bending the rules, so I do not subscribe to this myth.

Golf is a great game and we want to preserve the fact it is one of the most honest sports today and that, in general, people are respectful of the etiquette and rules placed on them by governing bodies and golf clubs alike. The job of golf managers is to uphold and improve this with continued positive education and communication. IT IS A TRADITION OF THE GAME The only thing that stays constant and will not change is that ‘things will change’. Golf rightly holds on to many traditions, but I would suggest that changes in trends, society and what people consider ‘smart’ dress is something that golf clubs have to consider and adapt to. Golf has changed hugely over time, including golf attire. We no longer play in tweed jackets, shirt and ties as the likes of Harry Vardon did. Trainers have been a complete no-no in golf clubs – on or off the course. But, the latest golf shoes from Puma are ‘trainers’ – the Faas Lite Mesh shoes are the lightest golf shoe in the industry and will be seen on golf courses – and surely they will have to be accepted in golf clubs as many clubhouses now allow ‘golf shoes’. RELAXING THE DRESS CODE WILL LEAD TO A SCRUFFY IMAGE This needs to be taken into context and even parts of a golf club will ask their members and guests to respect certain dress codes – no one is saying it will be a free for all. An example of this was from a manager of a golf club in Surrey. He recalled a meeting they were having at the golf club with their chosen architect for some clubhouse work

they were doing. The architect turned up, looking very smart in jacket, shirt, but smart (and expensive!) dark denims. After the meeting, it only took a couple of minutes for some members to express their dissatisfaction at this happening in the clubhouse. The manager pointed out that although they were ‘technically right’, in fact when he looked around, the architect was the smartest dressed person in the clubhouse and some of the members, whilst complying with the dress code, could not even be considered smart! This was one of the factors, along with some commercial reasons, why the club in question has changed its dress policy for the clubhouse to ‘smart

casual dress’. From a participation point of view, I think it is time to maybe consider being more open minded about attire on the golf course. Trends have changed and the focus should be more on being ‘SMART’ more than specific dress codes. Golf managers need to do all they can to

KNOW YOUR RULES QUESTION A player chips from off the green and his ball comes to rest against the flag but doesn’t drop. What happens next? ANSWER When a player’s ball rests against the flagstick in the hole and the ball is not holed, the player, or another person authorized by him, may move or remove the flagstick, and if the ball falls into the hole, the player is deemed to have holed out with his last stroke; otherwise, the ball, if moved, must be placed on the lip of the hole, without penalty (Rule 17-4).

encourage more golfers but also encourage use of the hospitality facilities. My opinion is that “SMART” is the

unsanctioned event in Turkey last year promoted by Chubby Chandler and thought it refreshing.

way forward, but seeing golfers in battle dress thigh length shorts with a myriad of patch pockets, trainers and multi logoed “T” shirts on a golf course is NOT smart. Golf is growing in Europe, Eastern Europe and North Africa. Experiencing different cultures and different attitudes to business and attire is revealing. Growing the game of golf in new markets is essential to the health of the sport. If the old traditions of dress codes were implemented in markets such as Russia – golf would just not take off. Dress codes are different and you either work with this, or have no one in the clubhouse! You have to work very hard to instill the great things about golf in new markets, but this surely is etiquette, honesty and respect. Fortunately, rules such as wearing ‘knee length socks’ on the golf course are mostly gone. Maybe it is also time for the professional tours to also help – it certainly is not offensive to me if we see tour players in shorts. It would not appeal to all golfers, but why not allow those who want to do this – at least in some events? They did in an

The ladies’ tour seems more relaxed about dress codes and the girls seem more fashionable and trendy and it is great to see some of the younger players, such as Charley Hull, coming through – this will encourage participation in the junior ranks. In summary, this is not a black and white issue, as few are and courses will need to determine what is right for its circumstances, maybe the time has come to make some changes in the industry to progress the future. So should we be surprised or disappointed to have a dress code on golf courses? Many sports have dress codes too for a variety of reasons, (Soccer: knee length socks, shirt tucked in, cleated shoes…Martial arts: Taekwando is Dobok with Karate: the white Gi etc… football, tennis, cricket…you can go on and they do not seem to have the same issues). After talking with several men and women golfers, they were unanimous that in order to avoid a degradation of the sport, dress codes should be mandatory. No doubt, most golfers do comply with the rules and don’t want to change a single thing. What do you think?

TITTER ON THE TEE Steve and Brenda took their six-year-old son to the doctor. With some hesitation, they explained that although their little angel appeared to be in good health, they were concerned about his rather small penis. After examining the child, the doctor confidently declared, “Just feed him pancakes. That should solve the problem.” The next morning when the boy arrived at breakfast, there was a large stack of warm pancakes in the middle of the table. “Thanks, Mom,” he exclaimed, “All for me?” “Just take two,” Brenda replied. “The rest are for your father.”

CD Torrevieja backed up their win at Levante with a home victory against relegated Ontinyent, who have lost all their away matches this season, but the first half was an instantly forgettable feast of tedium at the Vicente Garcia stadium. Apart from two good chances for the visitors and one fabulous save by Oscar, the first period was a grim affair. As early as the 5th minute, the Torry keeper produced a great impression of a rubber man when he twisted from going in one direction to manipulate his body the other way to palm away a header that was heading for a certain goal. Torry played possession football, but got nowhere - fast or otherwise! They were pedestrian in all they did and lacked the fiery pace of Brani and Cristian Sanchez on the flanks. Thankfully for Torrevieja, Cristian Sanchez was brought on by manager Galiana at the start of the second half, and a different type of match unfolded. Cristian's acceleration, close control and determination to get to the bye line was exactly what the doctor ordered and immediately play began to hot up with Torry adding a menacing edge to every attack, and breaking the deadlock in the 61st minute. Cristian flew to the corner flag on the left, pursued vainly by his marker. He got his head up and then delivered the ball

THEY’RE BACK NOT THE FULL MONTY

The big boys of La Liga return to action this weekend after a break for the Euro 2016 qualifying matches. Leaders Barcelona entertain Eibar tomorrow evening (Saturday), whilst Real Madrid are away to Levante a few hours earlier. Elche, who are just above the relegation zone, face a tough home encounter this Sunday evening against one of the surprise packages of the season, Sevilla, who lie third in the table.

just where it hurts, with the tall Steve Ekedi, making his home debut, blazing down on goal and he blasting the ball into the roof of the net. The delight and relief was palpable and Steve raced over to the home dugout and planted a big kiss on his manager's head, as his team mates hung on to his shirt in celebration. Adrian Banderas had also been introduced and he set up the second goal a few minutes later. Taking a free kick from the side left, he measured his cross supremely, finding Alexis in a crowed box. The commanding central defender headed for goal but Gerardo got to it and pushed it away, but only in to the path of Martin who he rammed it home for his first strike for the club. The last 20 minutes was nip and tuck, but no real threat on the Torry goal, with Vicente Boix once more outstanding. Torry didn't add to their tally but the three points propelled them into sixth place, one point off the play off places and four off the top. Unfortunately some momentum will be lost this weekend as their division only has 21 sides, and that means it’s their turn to sit out a weekend, with the next match at home to Castellon on Sunday October 26th with a 5.00pm kick-off.

A new rugby club has been set up on the Costa Blanca called DS Barbarians RFC which looks to uphold the traditional ethics of the sport, rather than concentrating on club politics. DS Barbarians welcomes everyone regardless of gender,

nationality, age or size, and they already have plenty of kids and ladies already signed up to start training in what should be a club with a great family atmosphere. The big problem is that despite over 40 people signing up, the club desperately need a ground where they can play and train in the San Miguel. They are getting together this Friday evening (October 17th) at the Poco Loco Bar in Cabo Roig at 8.00pm to talk about the future direction of the club, with UK teams set to come over as opponents next year. Everybody is welcome to come along. For more details call Saul 634 042 913 or Dutch on 692 767 242

SAN ISIDRO 2

CD MONTESINOS 3

Montesinos maintained their 100 per cent away record on the artificial pitch of San Isidro, but their manager Juampe was far from happy at the end as his team conspired to try and throw away their early advantage, with a mixture of poor finishing and goalkeeping in addition to some odd substitutions from the Monte boss himself. The pitch was very wet which made for a slow game, but Vaz popped up after just two minutes to give Monte the lead against the league’s bottom club. More goals didn’t come quickly though as the visitors just didn’t capitalise on their dominance. Vaz though made it two-nil from the penalty spot after he was brought down , and it should have been all sewn up before half-time as Vaz was brought down yet again, but this time Carlos stepped up

and shot over the bar with the last kick of the first half. Strangely, Monte made three changes at half-time and the visitors were caught napping from a long free kick and San Isidro were back in the game, as Monte’s passing game started to fall apart. The hosts made it two-two, as not for the first time, Cesar gave the ball to a player under pressure, who ended up losing possession. The player was then brought down and from the free kick, Cesar compounded his first error by dropping the ball at the feet of an incoming forward as the match was levelled. Both sides created chances, but it was Monte who got the winner, as out of a crowded box late on, Manuel managed to slot the ball home. Local rivals Racing San Miguel come to Los Montesinos this Sunday afternoon.

ROY KEANE’S LIFE A GAME OF TWO HALVES?

With his fearsome feet, aggressive head and often his fists, Roy Keane was not a man to take on physically, either on the football field, the training ground or in a nightclub. These days the fiery 43 year old’s strong suits are his words and print, lately having discarded punditry and circuit speaking in favour of using what Alex Ferguson (and he should know) referred to as the hardest part of the Irishman’s body: his tongue… Keane has just published his second autobiographical book, cutely called ‘The Second Half’ to remind everyone that ‘Keano’ is still very much about these days. Apparently a different side of the fiery Irishman is revealed – reports describe a more reflective aspect when exposed to the perils of club and man-management. The man from Cork displays a different approach to this sector of football life - in direct opposition to his belligerent physical powers on the field – the latter behaviour presumably belonging to that fiery First Half – which was hugely eventful... Alex Ferguson took the 22 year old Keane from the much more modest, provincial Nottingham Forest set-up under an ailing Brian Clough to the incomparable Theatre of Dreams, eventually becoming tough-guy Ferguson’s reincarnation on the pitch. Keane soon became a regular fixture in a star-studded side with names like Bryan Robson, Peter Schmeichel, Steve Bruce, Mark Hughes and Eric Cantona, as mighty Manchester United steadily regained its ‘Premier’ position from Liverpool and Arsenal as the country’s number one side. After Steve Bruce left, there were several worthy contenders for the enviable and prestigious captaincy position at Old

Trafford. But Ferguson, whose attention to detail is legendary appointed Roy as United’s phenomenal success in the late 90s continued. His gratitude and respect for Fergie is described fully in his first book ‘Keane – The Autobiography’ published in 2002. Three years earlier United had landed the amazing treble: Premier League, FA Cup and – the Holy Grail, the Champions League, a prize which at last elevated Fergie to the heights achieved by the legendary United manager Matt Busby, pioneer of English football in Europe. There were some bumpy times along the way, as Keane watched and learnt (or did he) at Fergie’s knee: like the infamous Eric Cantona ‘Kung Fu’ kick at a Crystal Palace supporter which threatened everything for a while at Old Trafford. Ferguson magnificently ‘managed’ the situation calmly to prolong Cantona’s career and subsequently bring yet more silverware to the world-renown club. But ‘Keano’ was also fighting his own personal demons all the time. In a bitter, never-to-be forgotten clash with Alf-Inge Haaland, really more to do with frustrated close marking than pure violence, Keane badly injured his cruciate ligament, ironically the same injury that changed Paul Gascoigne’s career as he also stupidly tried to injure someone. Brian Clough’s playing career had also ended with that injury years earlier when full recovery was impossible. Keane was to take savage revenge on Haaland years later, standing over the fallen Norwegian gloating the same way Haaland had done previously, before Keane stalked straight off the field before he was sent off: the tackle ended Haaland’s career. Nice – an undesirable example of captaincy, given the younger class of Scholes, Beckham, Giggs, Butt and the Neville brothers were all coming through the United system at that time. Keane’s injury required a long layoff period of recovery, and in Roy’s admission he drank hard and fiercely on it, but meantime slowly made a full recovery physically - if not mentally. Ironically and

MASTERING CONDITIONS

It was another successful weekend for the Masters swimmers from Club Natacion Torrevieja, as they took part in the International Travesia Cabo de Palos on the Mar Menor. The event attracted 279 swimmers, but there had to be changes on the day. The originally route planned to go around the headland of the lighthouse over three kms but due to the wind conditions, the race was changed to be a direct swim to and from the lighthouse at a distance of 2600 m. European Champion and world runner up in open water swimming, Margarita Dominguez Cabezas was guest swimmer in the race and took the overall 1st place in the event. Both Torrevieja swimmers Beth Altabas (pictured on the podium) and Vicki Connolly won 1st place in their Masters categories and Vicki came 2nd in the local competitor’s rankings, second only to the European swimmer Margarita. Beth being the oldest swimmer in the event was by no means the slowest placed 202 out of the 279 swimmers that finished the race. Vicki was placed 7th of all female swimmers and 49th out of the total 279, both male and female.

in common with Clough and Gascoigne (and many other famous footballers), the three share a well-publicised problem with alcohol. Keane revealed in the first book that he always had trouble ‘walking away’ when confronted in public. In 1999 after winning the Premier League and only days before playing in the FA Cup win and the Champions League final (from which he was banned from playing in), after drinking all day Keane was involved in a fight in a Manchester bar which resulted in a night in the cells. Unlike Cloughie where the problem eventually took his life prematurely, the United captain claims to have then stopped drinking. It had caused him many problems off the field, where fortunately most of them – but not all, as above – were hushed up. Away from the combative world of football, Roy Keane’s sanctuary has always been at home with his long-suffering wife Theresa, his four children and adored, adoring dog Trigg. Keane’s public disgust about the shambolic Republic of Ireland’s organisation erupted in Japan, just before the 2002 World Cup, resulting in him leaving his national team, walking out and flying home. In front of the world’s press who were camped outside his house, he calmly took Trigg for a walk soon after he returned. Now, despite Alex Ferguson giving Roy Keane the wonderful chance to make his name at Britain’s greatest club, sadly the Scotsman is now Keane’s biggest, bitter target in his controversial life today.

Next week: The Second Half…

SAILING BY

Calm conditions with wind at a premium were conditions that created the sailors on their third race day in the SAMM Autumn Series on the Mar Menor at Los Narejos. The morning races proved to be difficult with the first race winner, on corrected time being the Faversham 14 of David Belcher and Gary Bowen. The wind decided to co-operate more in the afternoon with vastly better conditions and times, with the Hamour crew sprinting to a clear win on corrected time by a very healthy two and half minutes. Meanwhile, SAMM arranged a Pursuit Race at October’s monthly meeting with dinghies taking part, in a set time event of 90 minutes, with the boats starting at staggered times calculated from their handicap, slowest first, fastest last. The theory is that they will all cross the finish line together. It ended up being a very close race, with the Martin sailed by Tony Jones and Neil Coates taking the honours.

From Leaders Chelsea Down To Quite Possibly Relegated – It’s Back To The Prem!

With England now well on their Wayne to Euro 2016, perhaps with some neighbours, it’s now back to business this weekend with some prolific Prem pushes ‘n shoves: but enough about Arsene ‘n Jose… Is there a Warnocking for Chelsea at Selhurst Park where his now-restabilised Crystal Palace could repeat what they did in the run-in to last year’s climax? Remember, when Man City rudely rampaged through past the Bridge Blues and Liverpool to finally win the Premier League? Everyone’s Martinibeatable: anytime, anyplace, anywhere - but it don’t look likely, do it, the way Mourinho’s men are playing? City could headline Match of the Day early doors on Saturday with goals galore against Spurs at the Etihad, the current Champions need to keep a spitting distance from leaders Chelsea. The northern Blues brothers, Aguero and Dzeko are both on fire, but Pochettino is proving he is putting together a spirited Spurs side - and let’s face it, he inherited a lottery win to work with from the Bale out largesse. Having gone fourth and briefly rejoiced, Man United now play West Brom, Chelsea, Man City, Crystal Palace and Arsenal. Soon after arriving quietly-not, post World Cup big Louis Van Gaal had a pop about the Red Devils’ over-ambitious pre-season tournament abroad. Now seven games in after a hard International week, the feisty Fuhrer has further fears that a few foreign footballers aren’t at their freshest for the foray to the Hawthorns on Monday. Argentinians Angel Di

John McGregor reports

Maria and Marcos Rojo flew to China to play against Brazil last week before taking on Hong Kong three days later. In an exclusive Courier report LVG explained: “Hey, I was ze national coach of Holland – did you know we came third in the World Cup - but as boss of a big club now it is not – how you say – a piece of pizza - as peoples think. Now ve have to travel to ze Howthings in West Birmingham – where is zat, Royan? My Argernaut players have many Airsmiles, but zey now also have jutleg, so I cannot train them. Zey are knockered, is it? Zis week your boy Wooney was a good capitan for your little Ingerland - he scored his goals but ze stupid boy is binned and cannot play for us. He should be more like my good Dutch boy Robin who always makes an example of himself. Tell him Rayon…” Doesn’t time fly when you’re not having fun? Only a week and that man Luis Suarez will be putting his teeth back in, but not this time swathed in Red, rather in a Barcelona shirt en Espana. He’s only coming back against Real Madrid - no pressure there, eh? Conversely cold comfort should be the order of the day on Sunday for Liverpool against bottom-placed Quite Poor Really at Loftus Road where no-guts-ormoral-fibre are the accusations currently levelled at Harry’s Hapless Hoops. Oh how Brendan’s boys need a win, with Barren Balotelli begging for a goal. But hopeful results shouldn’t be taken as Red, their Blue neighbours could use a win as well - and Everton might get one at home to stuttering Villa, where Christian Benteke is on the way back at last. Is that Keanely-felt influence telling for the Villains? If lively Leicester put in a successful shift away to

nervy, neurotic Newcastle it could prompt Pardew’s parting from St James Park after four years, the second longest-serving manager after ancient Arsene. Already in the Dreaded Drop Department, a Magpies’ defeat could mean a dead man walking, albeit this one requiring a platinum handshake to reflect Pardew’s unbelievable contract. Only Mike Ashley knows, and that man is no financial fool. Unlike certain others, Ashley’s business head always overrules his football one, though not always Tooned into the Army on the terraces… Sssssh… it’s the struggles of the S’s this weekend. Saturday sees Southampton v Sunderland looking exciting. Gutsy Gus Poyet at last got a win against Stoke and may have turned the Black Cats’ season around. But Ronald Koeman’s cool Saints have taken everybody by surprise (guilty as charged), combining St Mary’s unwanted leftovers from the close season Sale of the Stars with some shrewd new purchases, Rocking Ronnie’s kept Saints right up there with the big boys. Only just losing 1 – 0 to Spurs two weeks ago asked Southampton some questions, so what are the answers? Similarly, stuttering Stoke set out against swinging Swansea on Sunday where both teams need a win to settle early season nerves and prove they are worthy of prestigious Prem placings. Equal-bottom Burnley badly need a win, but buoyant visitors West Ham may not provide it. With memories of last season’s Cup Final, but this time at the Emirates, Hull may find the Gunners firepower too heavy, but who knows? Steve Bruce’s boys can look after themselves. The Cup Winners must win though to keep looking vaguely respectable up there – and not catching bouquets - as usual…
