MIRACLE RECOVERY

EMOTIONAL TERESA BEATS KILLER EBOLA By ALEX TRELINSKI A Spanish nurse who was the first person to catch Ebola outside of Africa fought back tears as she left a Madrid hospital on Wednesday after being cured of the deadly virus. Teresa Romero said she had clung to memories of family when she thought she was dying and still does not know how she caught the disease. "I am here to thank everyone, I am still very weak," Teresa told reports at Madrid’s Carlos III Hospital where she has spent the past month, mostly in isolation. Her eyes occasionally welled up with tears as she read a statement, surrounded by doctors and her husband Javier Limón. "When I felt I was dying I would cling to my memories, to my family and my husband, I was isolated and I did not have any contact with the exterior except with Javier by telephone," she added. Romero, 44, was part of a team at the Carlos III hospital

who volunteered to treat two elderly Spanish missionaries who caught the disease in Africa and died in Madrid in August and September. She was diagnosed with Ebola on October 6th, becoming the first person to catch the disease outside Africa, where nearly 5 thousand people have died in the outbreak. Ms Romero recovered after being given a variety of treatments including blood plasma from survivor Paciencia Melgar. She said that she wanted to meet the nun and "give her a big hug". "I can never be grateful enough," she added. An antiviral drug was also given to Ms Romero but the hospital was unable to say which method had been successful. The nurse said that if her blood helped cure another Ebola sufferer she would "repeat it again until I run dry". She also thanked the hospital staff for their support and said it would have been "impossible" to save her life without it. Hospital chief Rafael Perez-Santamarina told reporters it was "excellent news after a very complicated month for everyone".

90 thousand foreign residents packed up their bags and quit the Costa Blanca region last year, with just 379 thousand non-Spaniards officially registered in Alicante Province. The figures from the National Statistics Office show that the biggest falls were accounted by British and German people leaving, based on returns on the local Padrons, though there may be an element of people simply failing to re-register. Experts suggest that

people have actually left because of the increased cost of living and cut backs in services like health. 40 thousand British names disappeared off the registers, accounting for 30 per cent of the last year’s fall in foreigners, followed by a 14 thousand drop in the number of Germans. Many local town halls like Orihuela and Torrevieja will get less state money because of the fall of numbers on the Padron lists.

Almost half of all Spanish domestic tourists choose the Costa Blanca for a holiday, according to latest figures, and 20 per cent of both Spanish and foreign visitors go and stay in Benidorm. The Turespaña survey based on returns for 2013 says that one of the reasons that the region is so popular for Spaniards is that many of them have some kind of permanent holiday accommodation in the area. Benidorm continues to be a magnet for British tourists with the figures for 2013 showing that UK holidaymakers accounted for 46.5 per cent of foreign visitors to the resort, followed way

behind by France on just eight per cent. October’s hotel returns for Benidorm show a record 89.2 per cent occupancy which is the best figure for that month since 2002. Across the region, the statistics show that though UK visitors are very loyal to the Costa Blanca, the big spenders seem to the be the Russian tourists, and they spend four times as much per day compared to a domestic Spanish tourist

NOT SO PUSSY TERROR TWEETS GALORE

Torrevieja’s Green Party claims that 246 stray cats were put to sleep by vets acting for the Torrevieja council at a cost of almost six thousand euros last year. The Greens have added their support to a new initiative between the council and local animal associations to control the cat population with spaying and neutering as a way stopping the euthanising programme.

LEGAL DEAL

Fourteen hundred owners of “illegal” houses built on rural land in the Catral area may be on the verge of a major breakthrough. The town hall has come to an agreement with r e g i o n a l Valencia government officials to make some changes to the local General Plan according to planning councillor, Maria Asuncion Salinas. She said that the council had a very good meeting and added that she was looking forward to “giving legal certainty to affected home owners”.

SLEEP A BIT EASIER Crime figures are going down across Alicante Province with a fall of three point nine per cent so far this year compared to the same point in 2014. Just over 75 thousand cases were reported by this stage this year, a drop of some three thousand, and there was a fall of around 20 per cent in violent crime, whilst robberies fell by nearly 12 per cent overall. There were significant variations across the region with Orihuela logging an overall drop of six point eight per cent, whilst Torrevieja actually went up by two point one per cent due to an increase in robberies and burglaries in unoccupied homes.

PRICES FALL

The average price of a home in the Valencia region, including the Costa Blanca, fell by 6.8% in the third quarter of the year, compared to the same period in 2013, according to the home certificate and appraiser company, Tinsa. In Spain, the average price of housing fell by 4.3% over this period, which has already accumulated a slump of 40.3% from the highs it reached in late 2007, just before the start of the crisis.

At least ten people were arrested yesterday (Thursday) by the National Police on charges of glorifying terrorism and denigrating its victims on social media platforms including Facebook and Twitter. Those arrested included people who had posted online messages sympathizing with groups including the Basque terrorist group Eta, Al Qaeda and the now disbanded left-wing, Catalan nationalist group Terra Lliure. The arrests across the country are the second stage of Operation Spider, Spain's first dedicated operation against cyberterrorism, with the first phase in April netting 21 arrests.

POSITIVE TREND

TAPPED UP

The Murcia region has the most expensive water in the whole of Spain, according to figures from the National Statistics Institute. In a survey of tariffs from 2012, a unit in Murcia cost 2.50 euros, followed by the Balearic Islands at 2.38 euros. The Valencian region stood at 1.98 euros, whilst the lowest values came from Castilla y León and La Rioja at just over 1 euro a unit. The highest water consumption was in the Valencian region.

PILAR DEATH

Just under 80 thousand people signed on at Spain's unemployment offices in October, the lowest increase in a traditionally difficult month for jobs since 2010. A total of 79,154 people joined the unemployment line in Spain bringing the total number of people registered as looking for work to 4,526,804 according to Spain's employment ministry. When seasonally adjusted, however, the number of people seeking work in October was down 19,393, the biggest October drop in 16 years, the ministry said in a statement. The average October increase in the last six years has been 118,000. In addition, some 174,534 left Spain's unemployment queues in the first ten months of the year, the largest fall since 1998. The total number of people out of work in the Valencia region stood at just over 528 thousand, a fall of 0.89% compared to September, with the construction sector accounting for the extra jobs. Valencia and the Canaries were the only two regions where the dole queue shortened in Spain. Within the Valencia region, unemployment actually rose within Alicante Province and the Costa Blanca, as seasonal summer jobs came to an end. The Murcia region jobless figure stands at over 143 thousand, with a smaller October rise compared to the same month in 2013.

A man died through smoke inhalation after a fire in Pilar de la Horadada last Wednesday lunchtime. The blaze caused by an electrical fault happened in a property on Calle Salvador Seguí with emergency services discovering an unconscious middle-aged man of Moldovan nationality along with a younger person. Both were rushed to Torrevieja Hospital, but the young victim died on route.

EXTENDED PIVE

Spain will extend a multi-million euro subsidy scheme for the acquisition of new cars to the end of the year. The country’s car sales, hit hard by a near six year economic downturn, have been lifted by the so-called PIVE subsidy scheme which has already been topped up six times. New-car sales rose for the 14th straight month in October by 26 percent, car manufacturers' association Anfac said on Monday. Under the scheme, car owners who scrap their old car and buy a new one get a subsidy of 2,000 euros, half from the government and half from the carmaker.

OLIVES OILED PARAMOUNT PROMISES Up to 60 per cent of the Alicante Province olive harvest has been lost this year due to the intensity of the drought, with many farmers unable to even cover production costs. Spain’s harvest last year was more than 1.7 million tons, but that figure is now estimated at around 800 thousand tons. for 2014.

LESS CONTACT People who pay by certain charge cards at Mercadona’s supermarkets are beginning to see some new payment terminals across the stores, which are meant to make life easier and quicker. Five million euros has been spent by the company to roll out the project which will be finished by the end of the month, with 16 thousand terminals being installed which mean that Visa and Mastercard users don’t have to have their cards actually making any physical contact with the equipment, and transactions being carried out instantly.

Up to 16 million euros of European funding is to be used to help subsidise the delayed Paramount Theme Park in Murcia. Project boss, Jesús Samper, claims that the money from the FEDER (European Regional Development Fund) would be used to help build the park and also a four star hotel on the site. The latest start date for the first works to begin at the Alhama site is claimed to be January, with the whole project alleged to be completed two years later, significantly behind schedule.

THE NEW MONOPOLY?

SLIPPERY SARDINES

A man accused of smuggling 11 tons of cannabis into Santa Pola has told an Elche court that he was only importing sardines. He is one of 10 men on trial that prosecutors want to see sentenced to up to six years each in jail as well as fines in the region of 10 million euros. The gang were caught in the act unloading the contraband, pretending that they were sardine importers, with the booty making the journey from Morocco via the southern Spanish port of Algeciras.

ON YER BIKE

Pilar de la Horadada’s local police have added two new cars and two motorbikes to their fleet, with the bikes being earmarked to fight rural crime as they’ll be able to be used on routes that are normally difficult to access.

MULTIPLE RAPE CASE

RING SMASHED An industrial design student from the Valencia region is hoping to reap rewards from Spain’s large list of corruption scandals with a board game called Corruptopolis. The game designed by 22-year-old Marina Belda sees players take on the roles of figures involved in some of Spain's most notorious corruption scandals with the objective being to reach the fictional city of Villa Corrupta. To progress, players working in teams have to answer questions about high-profile scandals including the Gürtel kickbacks scheme and Galicia's massive Pokémon case. The student is now hoping to raise money for the production of the game on the Verkami website, and so far has raised over €1,300 of the €6,500 she needs. The National Police have arrested 19 people suspected of smuggling Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian women into the country for the purpose of prostitution, some of whom used Alicante-Elche airport, as well as Madrid, Malaga, and Barcelona airports for their onward journey to Almeria. Police say women were enticed from various locations in Russia through travel agencies or adverts for jobs abroad and flown into the European Union's borderless Schengen zone using different airports and false passports that included Spanish, Finnish and Dutch tourist visas. They were then allegedly forced to work in nightclubs. 16 other people were charged and four nightclubs in the Almeria coastal resort of El Ejido were shut down.

WALK AND LEARN

Almoradi’s popular guided Heritage Walks resume for the winter season this Saturday(November 8th), with a new route which will tell the story of the aftermath of the 1829 earthquake which hit the town and the Vega Baja region. Places on the walks need to be booked in advance with the Almoradi Tourist Office which has the full list of dates.

POLA PROTECTED

Santa Pola council has come up with a new set of protocols as part of a plan to react against beaches being polluted in the area after an “at sea” incident. The city has produced rules that cover the entire local coastal strip with a team of experts on stand-by if something should happen. Previous plans included protecting the sea but have now been extended to include the beaches.

BURNT PERSON

An Alcoy woman has given evidence in court that her husband raped her more than 30 times during their eight year relationship. The prosecution is asking for a 12 year jail sentence for the alleged aggressor (pictured in court), who has denied the charges. The complaints were made back five years ago in 2009, and asked why the woman did not report the incidents in the years leading up to 2009, she told the court this week that she was frightened of losing custody of her daughter, and that her husband put on loud music during the alleged assaults so that the neighbours could not hear her shouts. The defence say the claims are baseless, adding that she had filed five other complaints against her husband, and he had been cleared every time.

COSTA BOOST A woman suffered 40 per cent burns to her body in an Elche house fire on Tuesday. The blaze happened on Calle Hilarión Eslava in the kitchen area and the victim was taken to Alicante General Hospital with third-degree burns, whilst three fire tenders dealt with the incident.

COP ALERT

Downloading and using a mobile phone application is the latest tool in the war against crime that’s been tested in the Valencia and Murcia regions. They are two of six Spanish areas that “Alertcops” can now be accessed for people to report crime to the police at the flick of a switch, with the new app set to roll out across the rest of the country next year. Users can generate alerts via icons and then they are picked up by the National Police or Guardia Civil, with the “Alertcops” app available in stores for Android (Play Store) and iOS (App Store), free of charge and with plans in hand to extend to other operating systems. Six and a half thousand alerts have been received by the authorities during the testing of the app.

The Costa Blanca Tourist Board is targeting older holiday makers at the World Travel Market in London this week. Alicante Provincial Council tourism director, Joaquín Albaladejo says that he has clinched a key promotional deal with the Serhs Group which specialise in holidays for the over-50’s “This hook-up will mean that hotels in our region will be promoted right across Europe,” said Albaladejo”. He also met earlier this week (pictured) with representatives of the satellite TV channel, Eurosport, to see if what events could be televised from the area like the International Costa Blanca Bike Race.

GROUNDED The owner of Alicante-Elche and San Javier airports, AENA, will remain in public hands until at least next year, after a last minute objection from Spain’s Economy Ministry. Everything seemed to be in place for the part-privatisation of AENA until it emerged that the planned flotation of 28 percent of the agency’s capital will not go ahead this month as planned. The Economy Ministry has convinced the infrastructure ministry responsible for AENA that the financial arrangements for the sale of shares had a fatal flaw. The auditor tasked with signing a so-called ‘comfort letter’ in which the company’s accounts are given a seal of approval before the sell-off was not chosen by a public tender process. The government asked for official legal advice on the matter and finally the doubts won out, halting any progress for now on what would be the biggest privatisation operation in Spain for the past 16 years.

NEAREST AND DEAREST

Valencia City is set to be a Spanish trendsetter as it will be the first area in the country to offer a brand new, free service to families and friends of deceased loved ones. Wherever they are in the world, they will be able to attend the funeral service, and tour the cemetery, online. By law in Spain, deceased persons must be buried or cremated within 48 hours of their passing, which can make life difficult for friends and families overseas, unable to make arrangements to travel home in time for the service. Valencia's general cemetery is setting up a ground-breaking service, to be dubbed "Online Farewell," which will be streamed directly from their chapel and crematorium. To ensure confidentiality, families and friends wishing to make use of the new, and completely free, service will be given a code, which will then give them access to the footage of the funeral service on the website for the Online Farewell service, "El Museo del Silencio". The concept goes live on Monday November 17th.

FUNDOWN WINS PRIZES

A foundation in Murcia has been credited with helping young people with learning difficulties and Down’s Syndrome to find work. Fundown acts as an agency, and has many local businesses on its books. When they are looking for a gardener, cook, secretary or cleaner they contact Fundown first, to see if they have anyone suitable available to work. The foundation has been running for over 20 years and has won numerous prizes for the dedication it shows to its members. The aim is to enable youngsters with Down’s Syndrome to feel independent, useful, selfrespect and in control of their own life.

CATRAL CUBED

Local Rubik’s Cube fans rubbed shoulders with national experts in Catral last weekend, with some 30 competitors from as far away as Madrid and Granada trying to find out how quickly they could solve the puzzle. Time of around just ten second were recorded as the Open event was staged for the second time, and is the only such occasion in the Costa Blanca region, which was the brainchild of Catral man, Mario Rodríguez Ferrández. Variations on the putting the cube back together included blind-folded challenges and doing it with your feet!

editor@thecourier.es editor@thecourier.es COURIER POSTBAG: YOUR VIEWS ON OUR NEWS

FEATURE NEEDLED ME

It’s flu season again and I see that ‘Dr Mannu’ is at it again (Courier edition 193), spouting his anti-flu vaccine venom (I wonder if that works?). Here are some FACTS about the flu you’re your readers may want to read before being scared out of their wits by this ‘Dr’. Single dose-shots of the flu vaccine and the flu vaccine nasal sprays do not contain any mercury compounds. The multidose flu shot does contain a preservative called thimerosal, which breaks down into 49% ethylmercury and used to prevent bacterial contamination of the vaccine container. Ethylmercury is processed differently by the body than methylmercury, the neurotoxin that can build up in the body and is found in fish. There is no danger in receiving a vaccine with thimerosal – they’re given all over the world and it’s been extensively studied, even for cumulative effects on children over several years. If you want to avoid it anyway, or if you’re allergic to thimerosal, you can simply request a flu shot without the preservative. Formaldehyde is used in safely small amounts in several flu vaccines (Fluarix, FluLaval, Agriflu and Fluzone) to inactivate the virus so it cannot cause disease. It is not in other influenza vaccines (Afluria, FluMist and Fluvirin). Formaldehyde also occurs naturally in fruits and vegetables: about 2,000 mcg of formaldehyde in an average banana and anywhere from 8600 to 13200 mcg in a pear. Yet the amount of formaldehyde in flu vaccines ranges from 5 µg per dose (Fluarix) to 25 µg per dose (FluLaval) to 100 µg per dose (Fluzone). Les Pancott, Quesada

XMAS HELP

OUT FOR ADOPTION?

Once again San Miguel de Salinas Social Services are asking for help with their Christmas campaign for the less fortunate in our local community. There are over 70 families all with at least three children up to the age of 17 years that are registered with Social Services in the area. They are asking for nonperishable foods along with some festive fare & toys. These are so they can make up some food parcels & gifts to give for Christmas & the Three Kings. The main collection point is in the old town hall in San Miguel, but there are also a number of local restaurants, bars & businesses that have kindly agreed to be collection points, they are:- Dolphin Properties; Captain Morgan's Bar; The Nook; & Euronics at El.Galan. Social Services are asking for all items to be in to them by Friday December 12th to enable them to be individually wrapped for each family & child. With your kind help & donations we can make this appeal more successful than last year. Someone gave me an interesting idea, and I thought that everybody out there in Las Trish Herbert, Lomas del Golf, San Miguel de Salinas. Filipinas and Orihuela Costa should know about it, as it could change what happens in our area and our future. I have been told that we have local elections coming up next year, and I know that there are many of you out there in the area, who must be fed up with being promised this, that and the other from Orihuela and getting nothing. Orihuela gets loads of money from us every year, and what do they do with it? It’s all spent on improving Orihuela City but what about us? Do we get asked if we would like to improve our small area of Las Filipinas and Orihuela Costa? No, we don’t. I would like to alert your readers to a problem we have had when having a stair lift When did we last see anyone from Orihuela council? Do they know we even exist? Or installed. The company quoted for two stair lifts for external use. The first in absolutely fine where we are? Orihuela is 22 kms away, and difficult to get to if people don’t drive. San but the second has been fitted to a flight of steps which are narrow and after installation my Miguel de Salinas is 6 kms (No bus route yet, but they are working on it), whilst Torrevieja is husband is having great difficulty using the steps if carrying anything. The sales literature 14 kms away. So here’s the idea: - Why don’t we ask San Miguel de Salinas or Torrevieja to leads you to believe that the stair lift track is against the wall whereas in fact it is mounted on adopt us? What have we got to lose? the steps and occupies approx 11” (28 cm) leaving us 15” (38 cm) to walk with a wall to the Kind regards side of the steps. We believed it represented a safety Disgruntled resident of Las Filipinas hazard and was unsuitable for use and asked the company to remove it. The solution from the company was to remove the wall and rebuild it with a wider staircase!! Our response was that if this modification had been suggested at the time of ordering we would not have proceeded. We believe that it should be clearly pointed out in the sales literature there is a minimum width required for the staircase. Name and Address supplied

THE O'BRIEN LANGUAGE CENTRE

The O'Brien Language Centre had it's first ever presentation of A Level and GCSE certificates last Wednesday. It was with a great sense of pride in the achievements of the students, that the Director John O'Brien offered his congratulations on behalf of the teachers, to the the pupils on their fantastic results. These grades were made possible through the input of a very professional and dedicated team of teachers combined with the hard work of our students. The parents too have played a pivotal role with constant encouragement of a positive attitude and approach to school work. Throughout the year both the staff and the students could count on the constant support of the parents, who encouraged the students to maintain their efforts. Our job as teachers would not have been possible without this continual support from the home. Witnessing the obvious pleasure enjoyed by both the parents and students as they received their actual certificates at the awards ceremony makes all the work worthwhile. We as teachers and

parents are so proud of the grades achieved by our first group of students. The success of these students serves as an inspiration for our current GCSE and A Level students and we feel sure that next year will bring similar joy to our newer recruits. Pictured at the ceremony are students, Georgia Elliott, Laura Lydon, Erin Fraser and Elliot Russell. Staff, John O'Brien and his wife Susy Gomez, Mairead Sheehan and Sabrina Pati単o. Derek Raishbrook, was at the time somewhere over the Atlantic taking a well deserved short break. Also, a number of students could not make the ceremony due to work committments, holidays and university in the UK. These included, Molly White, Lorna Bartlett, Amy Sloan, Nicole Edwards, Kelsie Crowther, Patrick Bass. Two other students warrant a mention for their fantastic results, Carys Armstrong and Amanda Thomas. Congratulations to one and all and we hope you are very pleased with your results.

SPANISH NEWS

HEALTHY NOSH JUDGE SEEKS SETBACK JUSTICE

The Mediterranean diet may be grabbing the nutritious eating headlines around the world, but a survey is suggesting that Spanish university students are rejecting the healthy diet, which is said to prevent heart disease, diabetes, dementia and countless other health problems. Just 5.3% of 284 students surveyed at the University of Castilla-La Mancha – or just 15 students – scored ‘highly’ during testing. Researchers used the Mediterranean Diet Score and Healthy Eating Index to assess the quality of the students’ diets, for the study by Appetite journal. The Mediterranean diet should be rich in vegetables, fruit, beans, whole grains, nuts, olives and olive oil, as well as fish, eggs and wine. Most students however, rejected fruits and vegetables in favour of meat and dairy. The high intake of meat, sugar and saturated fat in most of the students’ diets puts them at risk of developing insulin resistance; type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

An Argentinian judge has rattled a few old cages by issuing arrest and extradition warrants for two ex-ministers of Francisco Franco's regime and 18 others, invoking "universal jurisdiction" for serious rights abuses. Judge Maria Servini de Cubria(pictured) wants to see two former ministers Rodolfo Martin Villa, 79, who was Franco's interior minister, and Jose Utrera Molina, 86, who was housing minister under Franco, Spain's dictator from 1939-1975. "This is tremendous news for the victims," said Maximo Castex, an attorney for victims of crimes against humanity. The judge asked Interpol to issue arrest warrants for the suspects so they can be extradited to Argentina for questioning. "It is historic," said Maria Arcenegui Siemens, spokeswoman for the Association for the Recovery of Historical Memory, a group supporting victims of Spain's 1936-1939 civil war and the ensuing 36-year dictatorship. "It is a great day for us," she said in Madrid. Villa is accused of ordering a police raid on protesting workers sheltering in a church which left five people dead in 1976, according to Servini's ruling. Prosecutors say Utrera was among the officials who signed the execution order for Salvador Puig Antich, a Catalan anarchist who was accused of killing a policeman. Utrera is the father-in-law of Spain's ex-justice minister Alberto Ruiz Gallardon, who resigned in September over the failure to pass a new abortion law. One of the lawyers acting for the plaintiffs, Carlos Slepoy, said it was the first time former ministers of the regime were targeted under universal jurisdiction -- a legal doctrine that authorizes judges to try serious rights abuses committed in other countries. After Franco's death in 1975, Spanish leaders signed an amnesty agreement seen as essential to avoid a spiral of score-settling as they tried to unite the country and steer it to democracy. Spanish authorities still invoke the amnesty law in refusing to investigate alleged atrocities during the Franco era, despite demands by the United Nations that it be scrapped. Servini last year issued warrants for two Spanish former policemen accused of torture, but the Spanish courts refused to extradite them.

“SELFIE” TRAGEDY

A Polish student on a one year Erasmus scholarship based at Murcia University, died last weekend after falling down seven metres as she took a “selfie” in front of Sevilla’s Triana bridge. 23-year-old year old, Sylwia Rajche (pictured via Facebook at Mil Palmeras beach last week) tumbled over a low stone wall and careered down some seven metres onto the concrete bank of the river Guadalquivir in the early hours of Sunday morning. Emergency services were called and found her in a state of cardio-respiratory arrest. They performed CPR on the scene and transferred her to a nearby hospital where she died. Murcia University are helping in efforts to send her body back to Poland along with her personal effects.

CORNERED BY THE KIDS

THERE are four corners in my living room but I am allowed in only one of them. Let me explain. I am the proud grandfather to three young children. I do look forward to their visits but must confess that at the same time their presence drives me demented. It is all a question of territorial rights, namely play dens. Grandson No.1, aged nine, occupies one corner of the aforementioned living room. He has set up camp there and woe betide anyone who interferes with his collection of bendy world wrestling figures or his packs of ancient dinosaur playing cards. The cards are new and ever being added to. It's the dinosaurs which are ancient -- indeed extinct, my grandson reliably informs me. In the opposite corner (blimey, I sound like a wrestling match announcer) lies the lair of my granddaughter, aged six and the sister of Grandson No.1. There are no toys or playing cards to be found there - just piles of notebooks and pens with which to write long and rambling stories about

her life thus far and to compile never-ending lists of items, places and dates that are compatible with being listed. My granddaughter used to keep a secret lockable diary, too, but first she lost the key and then the diary itself went missing. If the same person ever finds the diary and the key, then my granddaughter's secrets will no longer be secret. In the third corner of my living room is the den of Grandson No.2, aged five, and first cousin of Grandson No.1 and his sister. The contents of Grandson No.2's haven comprise neither wrestling figures nor dinosaur cards. No, his corner of my living room stays strictly spartan because the boy simply has no time for play. For not only is the lad my junior grandson, he is also that supreme fighter for justice who goes by the grand title of Marshal Ben 10 Batman, the Fighting Ninja Power Ranger. Curiously, when he is not busy saving the world, my super-hero grandson enjoys relaxing with episodes of Peppa Pig. Go figure.

Which brings me to the fourth and final corner of my living room wherein lies the television set on which

Peppa Pig is viewed. That is the only corner which I am allowed to occupy. The space is severely

curtailed by the spaghetti heap of electrical wiring and I have lost count of the number of times I have bashed my lower limbs on the protruding bits of digital boxes and trodden barefoot on extension plugs and sockets and other bits of technical paraphernalia. 'Point of order!' shouted Mrs S the other evening. 'How come you have to stand BEHIND the television set when our grandkids are here?' 'Because if I stand in front of the telly, I am blocking the view of Grandson No.2 and he'd miss the never-ending adventures of that cartoon pig and her flaming jolly family.' 'Second point of order!' hollered Mrs S. 'Why do you have to stand behind the telly in bare feet?' 'Because Grandson No.1 refuses to have me clomping about while he's absorbed with his wrestling figures and dinosaur cards. He says that I ruin his concentration.' 'Third point of order!' yelled Mrs S. 'Why can't you just hang about in the corner nearest our granddaughter?' 'Because she won't have me anywhere near her,' I

mumbled. That shut Mrs S up. But only for a moment. 'But our granddaughter adores you.' 'Not any more,' I sighed. 'She claims I stole her secret diary and slipped the key into my cleavage. Surely, the key would have gone straight through and dropped onto the floor? As a bloke, my busty substances don't provide for a cleavage.' Mrs S thought for a moment and then said: 'Maybe, just maybe, you DID take her secret diary and forced the lock for a quick read because your own life is nondescript and boring.' I was about to protest when I heard my granddaughter's voice from her corner of the room. 'Grandpa, come and give me a hug. I've FOUND my secret diary. It was in the den all the time. And the key is still in it.' I bounded over -- ignoring cries of 'I can't see the telly!' and 'Take your clompy shoes off!' -- gave my little grand girl a hug and then popped out to buy a diary in which I would record exciting and titillating lies.

GETTING YOUR PRIORITIES RIGHT

Rescuing animals is a very humbling experience and the rewards are great. When you see them blossoming into happiness is something I will simply never tire of. The animal rescue community though I think is a very strange one. I have never known a community where so much back biting goes on. Everyone seems to be stabbing each other in the back, when there is far more important work to do, like helping these animals. In my experience, not all, but many rescue organisations take part in this negative pastime of picking holes in each other. Since I was young, I have always had a pollcy of working alone and now I know why I made that important decision many years ago. There is a rescue organisation close to where I live and for months now the person who runs it has

been on at me about joining forces and I am always willing to help another rescue centre, but I do have my own and this is a full time job, so I have very little time to be in other places, as we are now looking after 35 animals. Anyway, I helped this rescue centre out and for some reason I was torn apart and now this person is doing their best to discredit my name and I find this behaviour quite disturbing. You help someone and they turn on you! Crazy, but true! I have had a lot of strange comments also, where these people think I shouldn’t be writing a weekly column for this newspaper! One comment thrown at me last week, was that it was all about me and not about the

dogs! My life is dogs, every single day and that is what I live to do, rescuing animals until my dying day, so how anyone can think it is

all about me is scandalous! If all the rescue centres concentrated on just looking after animals and not slagging the next centre off, the animals would benefit, because more time would be spent on them rather than some of these people who sit behind a computer and complain about each other on Facebook!

I class Facebook as a very similar thing to road rage. With road rage, the person is in their

car and surrounded by metal, which makes them think they are invincible. Sitting behind a computer in their cosy home and being spiteful to the world is exactly the same thing. I have always been a strong believer that if you have something to say you say it to the whites of someones eyes. Thats how we did things in Peckham, South East London anyway and it always seemed

to work well. I take dogs out of killing stations, rehabilitate them and find them forever loving homes. I take animals from my vet who have b e e n a b a n doned. I rescue animals from the street who are dying and bring them back to health. And I prefer to do this with just my wife and I, as we much prefer to spend our time doing very positive things for the world around us. A lot of Brits, not all, but a lot come to Spain and spend their whole time moaning about this great country and bringing everyone else around them down. I have to be totally honest and say that since I have lived in Spain

I have been around some great British people, but the majority of Brits have been the most negative and two faced people you will ever meet in your life. So I will let them all fight and argue amongst each other, but I am here along with my wife to make a positive difference for these amazing animals and that is what we will do. www.thedogyouneed.co m is a registered charity, where we rehabilitate the most severely abused animals. Our charity registration number is 1157175. THIRD TIME LUCKY

Living here in Spain, I try to use Spanish businesses as much as possible, however, I do sometimes like to go to an English supermarket for a few items and I like English cafes as they normally cater for vegetarians like me. I´m not against British businesses in Spain and I´m not anti-British of course but I also tend to go Spanish whenever I can, if only to speak the language and keep it fresh. I listen to Spanish radio stations in my car as they play a mix of Spanish and English, but my phone is tuned into TKO. I am integrating into Spanish life whilst maintaining my nationality, or at least I try, and this is the subject of this week´s article. I need to renew my passport and driving licence soon, therefore I need new photographs. I know there is a Spanish shop in my home town that does them, and they did my son´s pictures for his passport and school without a problem. I decided on the day that I had some time free and knowing that my passport has to last for ten years, I wanted to be sure I was looking the best I could, so I spent time making sure my hair was evenly curled, makeup neatly applied and looking almost human. I entered the shop and told the lady serving what I needed, however once she knew that it was for a UK passport her defences seemed to go up and she explained that it would not be possible as the background she had up was not suitable for my country´s passport and the man that changes it wasn´t there, but he would be available later! I explained that this was no good as I had to be back at work

later and told her I would go to a British shop to get the photos taken. Surely there wouldn´t be a problem with a British shop? They must know exactly what I need, well at least that was the hope! So, once again a few days later, I styled my hair, painted my face and set off for a shop near to where I was going to be spending an hour one Saturday. Walking into the shop full

of hope, my smile soon turned to a frown as I was told that the guy who takes the photos doesn´t work on Saturdays, but there was a shop in another town which does do them! I explained rather curtly that I didn´t have time to go to another town to look for a shop that does photos and I would find somewhere else. A friend had told me about a place in Algorfa, and about two weeks after first attempting to have these pictures taken, I set off hoping it would be third time lucky. I went with her and once again hair was set, make-up applied and ready for my date with a camera. This time there were no problems and the very helpful man who took my photos not only did the passport ones but also gave me some for my driving licence. The price was also incredibly reasonable, especially considering the work he had to do with the sizes. Tucked away in the back of the shop is a designer-style clothes shop which tempted my friend into buying a beautiful dress at an incredibly reasonable price. It all made for a stress-free visit and a bit of a browse through some lovely items of clothing and jewellery. I do try and stay Spanish when I can but sometimes it´s nice to have shops run by our own nationality to make sure that things we need that are specifically British can be done easily and without problems. It´s just a shame it took me three attempts at something that should have been an easy task. Now of course, comes the harder job of getting my driving eye test done when the local shop is open. The option of going British doesn´t apply with this and the choice is Spanish I believe, so, wish me luck!

NO LAUGHING MATTER

SO many stories in the press over the past week are an appalling indictment to Britain and its governments. The first would be a joke if it wasn´t so serious. The mayor of Calais told UK MPs that the British benefits system was a magnet to immigrants, thousands of whom have invaded Calais trying to get into the country. The mayor said some immigrants were even prepared to risk death to cross the Channel to get their hands on the generous benefits system which rewards immigrants. She added: "You have a much more favourable regime in Britain than other countries. The entitlement to benefits of £36 a week which is given to asylum seekers or migrants, is a huge amount for people who have nothing in their lives." The welfare state was introduced to be a safety net for people in need, but over the years has become a ridiculous “cradle to grave” alternative to being self-sufficient, thanks to political parties making promises to woo votes. It´s led to couch potatoes doing nothing in their sad lives other than living on benefits, and a growing number of baby factories women giving birth every year to get ever increasing state (our) cash. It´s also led to an army of people making false claims to live the life of luxury. So why is Britain so generous? We all know which party encourages the benefits system and only gives lip service to its curtailment. We´ve heard that Germany would rather see Britain quit the EU than see

the right of free movement within the EU curtailed. Fair enough, perh a p s Germany could start by encouraging the C a l a i s migrants with a "bribe" of free movement there of £36 a week in benefits? The next damning indictment is again over immigration, with a story that the government has not the slightest idea how many immigrants there are in Britain. They have completely lost touch with how many illegals are in the UK, and borders which should be secure, but are totally porous. Not only that, but asylum seekers are having to wait many years for a decision, and, in that time, are working in the black economy, or simply disappear. It started going wrong decades ago and it has now prompted even moderate MPs to warn of the implications. Sadly there are still the pain in the backside "politically correct" brigade (Socialists, Greens, Lib Dems and namby pambies), still hovering below the surface ready to pop out whenever someone dares to use a provocative word, like the Defence Secretary who suggested that some parts of the country were now "swamped" by immigrants. He was telling the truth, but

the soft touch brigade can´t accept it. Out they came to

and Health Service Ombudsman in their official

condemn him. They might have had something to criticise him for if he had used the word "infested"! The realisation is dawning on Tories that there is such public anger over immigration that they will have to choose between EU membership and "reasonable" immigration control. Because there´s no chance of any meaningful renegotiation of membership terms being forthcoming from Europe. I am so glad that the Scots have realised that the other alternative Labour - are not worth a light. Hopefully that light will dawn on the “Vote Labour regardless brigade” in northern England come next May. The third damning indictment is the devastating report about the failings of the NHS. The Parliamentary

report reveal how basic errors left a baby brain-damaged and a woman unable to have children, and in some cases resulted in needless deaths. I would dearly love to see a report which compares the current state of the UK NHS with healthcare services in Spain. I used to think I would return to the UK if either my wife or I had a serious medical condition, but now I'm not so sure. Failings investigated by the Ombudsman, include 424 cases of patients, mostly the elderly, being discharged too soon. Such patients often have to be re-admitted after developing infections or suffering falls because they have not fully recovered. And that is a tremendous burden for patients and their relatives and a high cost to the NHS.

It also looked into 20 cases of cancer misdiagnosis whereby lifesaving treatment had been delayed because symptoms had been missed by doctors. Ironically, s e n i o r NHS offic i a l s warned that the h e a l t h service needed an extra £8billion a year to meet the demands of a growing and aging population. And that is not far short of the m o n e y Britain hands over to the EU each year. So what´s more important - the health of the nation, or being part of a bureaucratic club which causes Britain more problems than it solves? I´ve done more than enough government bashing this week, so, just for once, I´m going to put out the flags and applaud the government for one thing even though, of course, they haven't gone far enough. And that is the news that tenants who terrorise their neighbours by making them feel intimidated or cause lots of noise with endless parties could be evicted in two weeks under a new fasttrack process for landlords. Not far enough - it should include house owners too, who do exactly the same thing. They should be

banned from their homes for a fortnight or more if they cause trouble to neighbours. Because it´s not just tenants who are guilty of this. New powers are being introduced by the Government which mean private and social landlords will be able to evict nightmare tenants more quickly, rather than leaving them in properties for months or even years while lengthy court proceedings take place. Yes, a good first step. This new power will not work by itself. It must include a ban on all the dogooders and soft touch brigade helping them by giving them a roof over their heads, by making it an offence to help them. If the trouble makers know they will be totally ostracised, it might put an end to the British phenomenon of neighbours from hell. Finally, Labour supporters - I hope this will convince you to vote in another direction. Here´s your wonderful (hypocritical) leader in all his glory. Ed was out in the streets of Manchester, on his way to a meeting - and passed a beggar. He suddenly realised he´s being photographed, so he turned back and gave the woman 2p out of his £130,000 salary. He even failed to make eye contact. The incident went viral on Twitter last week. Sad git! It turned out the beggar was Romanian and is "earning" at least £50 a day. I´m sure the vast majority of people in the UK would love to send these beggars back where they came from. Hopefully soon we´ll have the political guts to do it. I´m sure from Ed´s body language (pictured) he would love to do so too. Shame that he as Labour leader, has to be such a hypocrite. No wonder his personal rating has sunk to an all-time low.

SAY IT IN SPANISH Learn the lingo - with a little help from JEANETTE ERATH Spanish 147

¡Hola! Welcome to another week learning Spanish. I hope you are all taking your time to understand what you are learning and spending time every day doing something in Spanish whether it´s reading, writing, speaking or listening. The way we improve is by doing something all the time, think in Spanish even when you are talking in English. Train your brain in Spanish and you will find yourself speaking more fluently quicker. Have confidence in what you are saying and practise listening to the Spanish language whenever you can. A few weeks ago I received an interested e-mail from a regular reader June, who meets up with her friend Jean for two hours a week to practise their Spanish and June had a question about something she had translated online and wasn´t sure of the meaning. I am the first to admit that online translators are only as good as the information provided by the people behind them and, although they can be useful, they can also be a nuisance and not translate properly, therefore it is always good to have at least a basic knowledge of a language before trying to translate. That said in this instance the translator was spot on and I´ll explain what June and Jean were confused about. June explained that when she took classes she was always taught the way to speak in the past tense when she wanted to say ´used to´ was to use the imperfect indicative, for example: trabajaba, tenia, queria, hablaba, but when she tried to see the Spanish version of an imperfect sentence it would always come up with the verb ´soler´. She wanted to know why and so I explained via e-mail and also thought it would be a good idea to include it in a lesson here as it can be a bit confusing when you see this verb. The way I learnt this verb wasn´t with an online translator or even a book, but by speaking to Spanish people, that´s why I know that it´s a common verb and used a lot by the Spanish when they are writing or speaking. It´s important to listen to Spanish people as much as possible and you will

always be learning new words and phrases. So, back to ´soler´, as I said it´s an unusual verb because there is no real translation in English, in fact if you put it in an online translator and it gives a translation it normally comes up as – to be wont to- but what does that mean? I have no idea but I do know how to use ´soler´ so let´s explain:

The first point is that it is almost always followed by an infinitive verb. It is also normally only used in the present indicative and the imperfect indicative, and also the present subjunctive, but how does it conjugate? Well, it is an irregular o – ue verb, so the present tense is: suelo, sueles, suele, solemos, soléis, suelen, in the imperfect tense it conjugates as: solía, solías, solía, solíamos, solíais, solían. The present subjunctive is: suelan, suelas, suela, solamos, soláis, suelan. When it is used in the present indicative it translates as ´usually´, here are some examples to make it clearer: I usually work every day – suelo trabajar todos los días (cada

día), we usually eat out on Fridays – solemos comer fuera los viernes, this restaurant is usually good – Este restaurante suele ser bueno, he usually does his homework on Saturday – Él suele hacer sus deberes los sábados. Of course you can use an adverb such as normally or usually in Spanish followed by the conjugated verb, for example: I usually work every day – usualmente trabajo todos los días, we usually eat out on Fridays – usualmente comemos fuera los viernes, etc. The verb soler just gives us another option and it is very commonly used in Spanish. When we use the verb in the imperfect indicative the meaning becomes ´used to´ as in the following examples: I used to go to the beach every day – solía ir a la playa cada día, we used to see more of each other – solíamos vernos más, they used to come here a lot – solían venir aquí mucho. Once again it is possible of course to use the imperfect indicative of the verb conjugated but using soler is much more common, for example you could say: I used to go to the beach every day – iba a la playa cada día, they used to come here a lot – venían aquí mucho. When to use ´soler´ in the present subjunctive is the same as any other verb, remember the lesson I did recently on the subjunctive, if not have a read again. Basically it could be said that after a verb + que we use the subjunctive when the verb shows uncertainty or in the negative: YouTube isn’t a website I regularly visit – YouTube no es un sitio web que yo suela visitor, Nowadays it isn't something we usually have in the kitchen – Hoy en día no es algo que solamos tener en la cocina. So, you can see it is a very useful verb to use especially to talk in the past when we don´t want to think about imperfect conjugations. It´s an option to consider and very handy, try practising saying phrases using soler and it will soon become natural. Thanks very much June and Jean for your question and idea for a lesson, and if you have a question don´t hesitate to contact me via The Courier and you might find your query in this article. ¡Que tengas una buena semana!

WHAT TO DO IF YOU’VE BEEN BURGLED. Statistics in Spain Crime rates in Spain remain among the lowest in the EU according to the latest Interior Ministry crime report. However, since the economic crisis began in 2008, there has been a steep increase in domestic burglaries and theft as a result. In 2012 the number of burglaries in homes rose by 25.4%. The message to expat residents is not to panic. There are some simple precautions to take, as you would back in the UK, such as fitting security grills, installing exterior lights and alarms, being careful about what content is posted on social networks, especially anything to do with trips and holidays away from home. It also helps to take out a quality home insurance policy that will cover your home and its contents should any unfortunate incident occur.

When you discover you’ve been burgled As soon as you discover you’ve been burgled, whether it’s a break-in or theft at your home, first call the police. Don’t touch anything until they arrive. A police report will be needed to process your claim. Then secure your home to avoid further damage, board up any broken windows, make a list of damaged or missing belongings, detail the damage to your home resulting from the burglary, taking photographs of damaged windows or door. At this point, you can call the claims department of your home insurance company. We advise you to have your policy on hand when you call.

Peace-of-mind with Linea Directa We understand that your peace-of-mind is important, especially in your home. Our claims department will take a full statement of the circumstances of the incident. We will check the insurance coverage with you explaining all the procedures. If emergency repairs are required from locksmiths to glaziers, we will help you swiftly handle your claim and get things back to normal as soon as possible. Fortunately, incidents of theft in Spain are relatively small compared to other EU countries, however should you be burgled, your homeowner’s insurance policy will cover the loss or destruction of personal property if it’s stolen from your home.

Hold-up outside the home In many cases, your home insurance policy may cover you for any incidents that occur outside your home. Should you be the victim of a hold-up outside your premises your personal belongings are covered. We will ensure replacement documents are quickly and efficiently dealt with, and if required, arrange the locks on your home to be changed. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. If you would like to contact Linea Directa please call 902 123 161 More information on Linea Directa online at www.lineadirecta.com

TRELI ON THE TELLY

CRAIG REVELS IN FACTOR FLOP with ALEX TRELINSKI There’s nothing to beat a good bit of bitching over a rival TV show, especially when it comes from a programme which has seized the upper hand convincingly. The straight-speaking judge, Craig Revel Horwood says that Strictly Come Dancing has dumped all over The X Factor, saying that viewers are turning away from the ITV golden egg because it has become boring, adding that Strictly has killed off the Simon Cowell show for good! It’s all good vitriolic

copy but does the acerbic Aussie have a point? The day when the X Factor could get up to ten million UK viewers a show have long gone (bar the final), but that is true for virtually everything else (that is non-sporting) with the exception of the Bake Off final a few weeks ago which got a stellar 13 million glued to their sets. All the soaps, traditional ratings grabbers, are also struggling to get much above seven million these days. So it was a stunner last Saturday when Strictly got just under ten million whilst the X Factor could only muster seven million viewers, as the gap between the two shows gets wider and wider. That’s despite all the tabloid hype over Cowell allegedly being unhappy with the quality of the acts and a Saturday night elimination, which was all intended to boost viewers, and in fact the reverse happened! By the

way, if you look at the figures for The Voice on BBC1 earlier this year, they are largely higher than what The X Factor achieves now, which must be sending a shudder down Cowell’s back. Strictly (We are clearly not missing Brucie) has held its ground largely because it is a

good natured show that has positivity about it, and yes we know the celebs, the dancers, the presenters and judges are well rewarded, but they are not paid silly money and it is genuinely about the taking part and giving it all. That being said, I still like The X Factor but one

should never lose sight of the fact that it is a piece of entertainment rather than a proper talent search like The Voice or Britain’s Got Talent. I was chatting to somebody a few weeks ago about The X Factor which he had not seen for a couple of years and he watched the show (at the audience audition stage) and remarked that he saw just one singer in 15 minutes, and the rest was the judges just bickering. “It’s not a talent show”, my friend remarked, and perhaps that might be the problem for some people. I like the rows and the hype, but I suspect

that a lot don’t and as Revel Horwood says, boredom has crept in, but I also believe the “mean-spiritness” of The X Factor has tired some folk out as well. Ironically, it was no way as bad on that front last Saturday, but those who had turned off were probably expecting more of the same. The X Factor results show on a Sunday has started to slip as well, with Downton Abbey being ITV’s best performing show on eight million. So, there are signs of worry for ITV but I’m far from getting the coffin out for The X Factor. I suggest though that ITV bosses could take a tip or two from Strictly or The Voice in that a bit of humility and compassion is what people seem to want these days as they try to work why viewers are turning away from the X Factor, or is it simply the fact that the acts are hardly stunning?

GRANTCHESTER 22.00 ITV 1

6/6. With Amanda and Guy's wedding fast approaching, and his betrayal of Hildegard still fresh in his mind, Sidney is thrown deep into crisis, and the murder of a local cop doesn't help matters as he allows himself to become drawn into another case with Geordie. However, tragedy strikes as the duo close in on the killer, and with Geordie's life hanging in the balance, the clergyman finds himself cut out of the investigation as the police close ranks. But that doesn't stop him enlisting the help of Mrs Maguire and Leonard in a daring mission to gather information on the man who shot his partner. Last in the series.

DIGITAL HEARING OPEN DAY THURSDAY 13th NOVEMBER 2014 Has seen the launch of the Unitron Moxi Kiss Pro 2 hearing aids incorporating 360degree speech detection, and Digital Hearing at Quesada is holding an open day to enable everyone to have the opportunity to experience this latest technology for themselves: • Experience your mobile phone played directly into your ears • Hear the television played directly into your ears • Use a remote microphone to hear with total clarity in any noise. Unitron Pro 2 360-degree speech detection Speech zone 2 can now pinpoint speech anywhere within the 360 degrees of a circle and respond intelligently to provide superior results for hearing speech in noise. Activated when speech is present in a noisy environment, its sensors rapidly determine if speech is coming from the front, the back, the left or the right side of the listener. Speech zone 2 then automatically selects a binaural or asymetric synchronised microphone strategy to ensure the best possible speech understanding in noise. The ability to target speech from any direction is made possible by the next generation of binaural spacial processing. To avoid queuing on the day, book your appointment time for the free hearing check and demonstration by phoning Michael Burke on 698 418 642, or book on-line at digitalhearing@hotmail.co.uk. Horoscopes Aries March 21 - April 19 This week’s link between your ruler, Mars, and psychic Neptune suggests that you should trust your intuition about how to reach your current career goal. If you take a subtle, roundabout approach, you can sidestep a potential problem, so do not try to force the pace. Thursday’s Full Moon also throws new light on a financial issue or dilemma.

Taurus April 20 - May 20 Thursday’s Full Moon in your sign marks a major turning point in your affairs, so let events unfold and wait until you get your bearings in the new terrain. If you take a confident approach to recent problems, you could also find that your fears are groundless. A powerful link between telepathic Neptune and your ruler, Venus, puts you in a very strong position now.

Gemini May 21 - June 20 A sudden hunch or inspiration could help you find a new way forward in the week ahead. Do not let advice from friends colour the decisions you make now. If you have the courage to branch out and take the road less travelled, you can usher in a whole new era. You could also find that what you want from someone has been changing.

Cancer June 21 - July 22 The Full Moon in the area of your skies that rules your social life puts you in an outgoing mood this week and helps you break new ground. A close relationship is also under lucky and romantic stars, so if you have been hoping for a chance to bring about important changes, this is the time to show your hand. Listen to advice midweek.

Friday, November 7, 2014

By Pandora Leo July 23 - August 22 Someone who can help you get ahead could soon see how much you have to offer, so follow up on recent leads and ask for support from those who count. A harmonious link between diplomatic Venus and the psychic planet, Neptune, also eases tensions in a close alliance. It seems you can rely on someone you may have felt unsure of.

Virgo August 23 - September 22 The dynamic planet, Mars, gives you extra staying power and motivation now. A new creative scheme has also got the stars behind it, so focus on the details of your plan and take a confident approach. An important friendship enters a new phase midweek, when a shared ambition gives you unexpected common ground.

Libra September 23 - October 22 This weekend’s link between your ruler, Venus, and the planet that rules secrets and deep feelings, Pluto, makes it easy for you to discover something that you badly need to know. The position you are in is stronger than you think, but play your hand with care and let others do the talking. Postpone all decisions until you are quite sure of where you stand.

Scorpio October 23 - November 21 The easygoing atmosphere this week helps you relax and focus on your most important bonds with others. If you dismiss your doubts about a loved one’s feelings, you can take opportunities that Thursday’s Full Moon brings to reach a deeper understanding with them. Do not be afraid to let down your defences then.

Sagittarius November 22 - December 21 Because you are in tune with your real needs and feelings, you will make the right decision about something that preoccupies you now. Do not wait for concrete proof that how you see things is correct, or listen to advice. Only you know what is right for you, long-term, so have the courage of your convictions now. Plan to socialise on Thursday.

Capricorn December 22 - January 19 Romance and social life are linked this week, so do not let work commitments take up all your energy, or put your own desires and needs in second place. Thursday’s Full Moon in your chart’s zone of adventure, creativity and new departures stresses the importance of being open to people and ideas. Unexpected changes are on the horizon.

Aquarius January 20 - February 18 It seems a certain battle is as good as won, so do not let a minor setback throw you off your stride this week. If you are singleminded and determined, you could win the recognition you deserve from those who count, so be proud of what you have to offer and focus on your goal. Financial pressures start to ease from next weekend..

Pisces February 19 - March 20 The emphasis is now on social life, communication and sharing new ideas, so accept an unexpected invitation and be open to what others have to offer, especially later in the week. Feedback from someone you spend time with then could transform your chances of success in months to come. It seems that an ambitious goal is within reach.

ADVICE: Vic was having problems viewing his banks ADVICE: Chris wanted to know whether website on his new laptop she had to remove AVG 2014 before Hi Richard, i tried to log onto installing the new version. my Spanish Bank I am using

Q

a laptop with windows 7 and internet explorer 10. I know I used the right password and user name but it would not let me in, when I got back to Spain I went to my Bank they have a computer for customers use they told me to try to log on which it did all OK, I went home tried on my laptop no luck it was saying no account and wrong password I tried on my wife's laptop XP internet explorer 7 went straight in all OK tried it on Google nexus tablet all OK but every time I try on my laptop I get the same message no account and wrong password or user name you have 3 attempts. I done a scan with Microsoft Security Essentials and malware bytes all OK done a ccleaner but still the same - your advice would be appreciated I am not great with computers. Regards Vic

A

Hi Vic, I have seen this problem before when using Internet Explorer 10 – and IE11 for that matter – the banks have not added the relevant coding to accommodate these newer web browsers. One thing that you can try and has worked several times for me in the past is to add your banks website to the “compatibility view” of Internet Explorer. This is pretty simple to do, just launch IE, click on the cog (top right) and click “compatibility view settings”, then in the new window enter your banks website address and click add then close. This will force IE to work in “compatibility mode” when visiting your banks website – give it a go and see how you get on.

Q A

Hi Richard. Do I have to cancel AVG 2014 before I can update AVG 2015. Your advice would be much appreciated. Chris

Hi Chris, AVG 2015 came out some time ago so if you are still running 2014 you really need to consider upgrading sooner rather than later. You can download the new version from here… http://free.avg.com/eu-en/free-antivirus-download …when you install the new version it will automatically remove the old version from your computer as part of the installation routine. Hope that helps.

ADVICE: Josephine wanted help with a .pdf viewer Hi Richard, need a bit of help with P D F Viewer. I bought my computer from you and need you to advise me whether I am able to install the above or is it already within. I am worried to try to do anything in case it crashes. I have a couple of bookings that I need to obtain to print out from EasyJet etc. I am away very shortly, so can you please let me know as soon as possible as what I need to do! Many thanks, Josephine

Q A

Hi Josephine, when we supply computers we always install Adobe Acrobat Reader – the thing you need to read .pdf files, so if it’s one of our computers it should already be installed, if it’s not then you can get a free copy of it from the following address… http://get.adobe.com/reader/

Don’t forget you can follow me on twitter @bluemoonspain Alternately why don’t you sign up for my newsletter. You can do this by going to:www.bluemoonsolutions.es and fill in the form that is on any page except the front page.

ADVICE: Michael wanted to know how to translate a document, he had scanned, into Spanish

Q A

Hi Richard, I have a letter which I wanted to translate and so I scanned it to file hoping to be able to copy into google translator, however the file is jpeg from the scanner and I can`t copy it. Is there a way it can be done? Regards, Michael

Hi Michael, this isn’t the first time I have been asked this question, back in 2011 I had a similar question from David, you can see the answer here… www.bluemoonsolutions.es/faq/david-was-trying-to-translate-some-documents-thathe-had-scanned-into-his-computer …however things have now moved on and I have, with a bit of research, found the following website… www.free-ocr.com …they offer a free OCR (optical character recognition) service to many languages (including Spanish), why not give it a go and let me know how you get on?

HOW TO CHECK AND TOP UP YOUR OIL CHECKING YOUR OIL IS AN EASY BIT OF MAINTENANCE THAT YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO HELP PROLONG THE LIFE OF YOUR CAR

The key to keeping your car in good condition as it gets older is maintenance. That includes everything from washing it regularly to ensure it remains free from caked-on grime, to more involved jobs that you might prefer to leave to the experts, such as getting it serviced every year. Even if you leave those services to a mechanic, though,

it’s a good idea to carry out a few checks of your own each month. And one of the most important is to make sure your car’s engine oil level is as it should be. But if you’re daunted by the thought of even lifting your car’s bonnet, you might not know where to start. Don’t worry – it’s really a very simple process, and one which we’re about to guide you through. What you’ll need: A pair of gloves or some washing up liquid - Dirty oil doesn't come off easily and can stain your hands for a few days, so if you can get hold of some cheap latex or plastic gloves, you’ll be glad of them. If you can’t, at least make sure you have some washing up liquid, or a strong hand cleaner or de-greaser, ready to clean up with afterwards. A clean paper towel or piece of kitchen towel - You’ll need this to wipe clean the dipstick Engine oil - If your oil level is low, you’ll want to top it up on the spot, so it’s a good idea to have a bottle of oil ready and waiting. There are lots of different grades (types) of oil, though, so make sure you get the right sort. You can usually find this in your car’s user manual. Funnel - Getting the oil into the car without spilling any can be tricky. A funnel will help. How to do it: 1. Park your car in the right place Make sure your car is on flat, level ground; if it’s on a slope, the readings you get won’t be reliable. If you need to move the car to a better location, wait 10 minutes before reading the oil level, so that all the oil in the engine has a chance to sink back down to its reservoir. 2. Open your car’s bonnet This is usually done by pulling a lever located in the driver’s footwell. If you can’t find it, check your car’s manual, which should explain whereabouts the bonnet release is for your particular model. Don’t forget, you’ll also need to disengage the safety latch – once you’ve pulled the lever inside the car, feel under the leading edge of

the bonnet for a plastic or metal lever, which should move upward or to the side, allowing you to fully release and open the bonnet. 3. Locate the dipstick Most cars make the dipstick easy to spot by making the handle brightly coloured. You’re looking for a round or Tshaped handle, that looks like it’s joined to a spindly looking pipe running down towards the bottom of the engine. Alternatively, it might have its own recess in the plastic engine cover. Once again, if you have any trouble, you should find the car’s manual explains exactly where to look. 4. Remove the dipstick, and wipe it clean Pull the dipstick out of its sheath. It might be longer than you expect. Once it’s out, you’ll see that the end is covered in oil. Don’t read it just yet – you won’t get an accurate reading. Instead, grab your paper towel and wipe the dirty oil from the end of the dipstick. Then re-insert it into the sheath it came from, pushing it all the way down until it clicks back into place. 5. Remove the dipstick again, and check the oil level Pull the dipstick back out, and now you should have a clear reading of the amount of oil in your car. There will be two marks on the dipstick itself – usually notches cut into the side, bends in the dipstick itself, or marks engraved on the metal, and the oil level needs to be somewhere between the two. Once you’ve finished, replace the dipstick. When does my car’s oil need topping up? Your oil shouldn’t need topping up until it’s at the lowest mark on the dipstick. This usually represents the minimum amount of oil you can safely run your engine with. If your oil level is below this, or worse, if there isn’t any oil on the dipstick at all, then you should top your engine’s oil up immediately. If your oil level is lower than halfway between the two marks on the dipstick, we would still recommend that you top it up, as that way there’s less chance of it dipping below the ‘minimum’ mark without you realising. How do I top it up? 1. Locate the oil filler cap in your engine bay This should be relatively easy to do – it’s normally marked with the word ‘OIL’, or with a pictogram of an oil can. Make sure you get the right cap, though – pouring oil into another filler spout, such as the coolant or the brake fluid, could have disastrous consequences. Again, if you’re in any doubt, the owner’s manual is your friend. 2. Pour in as much oil as you need If you’re using a funnel, position it on top of the spout. Then start to pour. Don’t pour oil in right up to the level of the filler cap – this will be far more than your engine needs and could cause catastrophic damage the next time you start your engine. As a guideline, on most dipsticks – though not all – the gap between maximum and minimum will represent about a litre. So if your oil level is at the minimum mark, you know you’ll have to put in roughly that much to get it to the maximum. And if it's only half-way down, you know you will probably need to add half a litre. You should still make sure you pour in small doses, though, checking the dipstick each time by following the procedure above, until you reach the maximum mark. That way you won’t over-fill.

INTESTINAL PARASITES ARE MORE COMMON THAN YOU THINK

There is a general misconception that parasites and their associated illnesses only occur in third world countries where the standard of living is low and people live in filthy unhygienic surroundings; this is not so true. Recent technological advancement in medical diagnostics now shows that parasitic infestations are more common place than previously thought. Parasites can range from microscopic single cell protozoa to worms that are 15 feet long. The most widely spread protozoan parasites in humans are Giardia lamblia,

Entamoeba histolytica, Blastocystis hominis and Crytosporidium. These are mostly picked up from contaminated food and water supplies and poor personal hygiene. While it is common knowledge that parasites cause intestinal problems such as diarrhoea and vomiting, few people realise their connection with chronic diseases. A study reported in the Journal of Nutritional Medicine revealed that out of over 400 chronic fatigue patients in New York, an incredible 93 per cent had some form of parasitic infestation. When parasites invade the intestines, they may provoke allergic reactions causing inflammation which leads to a ‘leaky gut syndrome’: a condition whereby the pores of the intestinal lining are opened too wide, allowing foreign toxic substances to enter the bloodstream. These foreign invaders overload the liver and accumulate in the organs, muscles, lymphatic system and nervous system, thereby creating a wide variety of disease conditions like arthritis, asthma, eczema, chronic fatigue and memory loss. A type of parasite known as Entamoeba Histolytica has been found to migrate to the liver and is capable of causing weight loss and insomnia. Parasites also depress the immune system by excreting toxic waste products into the body. Taking simple precautions and good personal hygiene will go a long way in preventing parasites. Hand washing before eating and after going to the toilet, thorough washing of fresh fruits and vegetables and regular deworming of your pets, are all good practises. Foods such as Papaya, garlic, raw cabbage, pomegranate and pineapple have anti-parasitic properties. Q

Last year in March, I started having pains in my lower left leg. I went to the salud and the doctor prescribed pain killers which didn’t help at all. Then sometime in March I was hospitalized because I had very severe chest pains and was unconscious for many days. The hospital later found out that I had clots in my leg. I was discharged from hospital unable to walk without support. I don’t have pain in my legs, but feel a bit off balance when I try to walk. I am a 75 year old woman, and I take tablets for blood pressure. I will appreciate any advice you can give.

A

It’s unfortunate your doctor missed the blood clot in your leg. From your history, it appears the clot from the lower leg eventually found its way to your heart and brain causing the symptoms that led to your hospital admission. Blood clots in the legs are usually caused by atherosclerosis, the medical term for hardening and narrowing of the arteries due to plaque build-up. Atherosclerosis can develop in any of the

arteries of the body; however it commonly occurs in the arteries that supply blood to the heart and brain. When these arteries are blocked, a heart attack or stroke occurs. The hospital will have prescribed blood thinners such as aspirin or warfarin to prevent future recurrences of the clot. It is still unclear if these medications are useful for preventing blood clots. Aspirin has been shown to damage the kidney and liver at doses above 100 mgs daily. The difficulty you are having with walking is probably due to brain damage from the possible stroke you suffered. This type of minor damage is known as a neurological deficit, and it means that an area of the brain has been damaged. In such cases, the only useful treatment is a regenerative therapy to rebuild the damaged area. The good news is that nerve tissues can regenerate if adequately supported. Laminine is a unique supplement that supports regeneration of nerve tissues as well as other tissues. It stands alone because it is the only supplement available that contains Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF) – a protein that stimulates the growth of reserve or stem cells. These reserve cells or fibroblasts are found in the heart, nerves, brain, bone marrow and muscle tissues. In

other words, the FGF contained in Laminine helps our body repair itself. Laminine also contains all 22 essential amino acids. These amino acids are known as essential because we need them but our bodies cannot make them, and so we can only get them from food. Amino acids are vital for making DNA and other genetic materials, and so are referred to as the building blocks of life. Our skin, muscles, hair and many organs are mainly built from amino acids. We receive amino acids by digesting proteins from plant and animal food. But as we age, the entire digestive system may become dysfunctional, leading to poor digestion and absorption. Many studies have shown a reduction in the absorption of amino acids in the elderly. Without amino acids our bodies are unable to repair the damage that occurs from the everyday wear and tear of our organs which leads to many diseases that we have come to associate with ageing especially disorders of the heart and brain. Laminine contains readymade amino acids that are absorbed straight into the body for repairing damaged organs. Amino acids also help detoxify the body. Laminine can be ordered by calling MedB on 965071745

IS SOY GOOD FOR YOU?

Fermented soy if eaten moderately can be beneficial to your health. Unfortunately soy products sold in health shops and supermarkets are highly processed, unfermented toxic forms of soy. Soy is traditionally eaten in Asia, especially Japan, and was relatively unknown everywhere else until very recently. It became popular when it was hyped as the reason behind Japanese longevity. However we now consume 30 times more soy than the Japanese. And they only eat fermented soy. Soy contains a number of toxic chemicals. And for this reason it has to undergo prolonged fermentation before it becomes fit for human consumption. Phytates are toxic compounds found in soy. They prevent the absorption of minerals such as; calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc by binding to them. Soy also contains potentially deadly haemaglutinins. These chemicals bind to red blood cells, and by doing so prevents oxygen from reaching the cells and tissues of the body. The resulting oxygen depletion can be felt as muscle weakness and muscle pain. Soy also contains high amounts of chemicals known as isoflavones and genistein. These block or mimic the female hormone – estrogen. Studies have confirmed that women, who consume up to 2 glasses of soy milk daily, may be disrupting their menstrual cycle. In men, these phytoestrogens cause breast enlargement – gynaecomastia. Soy also contains goitrogens. These bind to thyroid hormones, causing dysfunctions in metabolism and other thyroid problems. Soy also contains high levels of aluminium, because of the intense processing it undergoes. Soy is now added to baby formula, and is known to cause thyroid problems in babies. Soy based foods are also known to cause kidney stones. Soy is also known to weaken the immune system. This is due to the oestrogen like substance it contains known as genistein. One study also showed that genistein in soy may impair sperm as it swims towards the egg. Researches have even suggested that women should avoid soy in their fertile days to aid conception. FOUR WAYS TO WAKE UP FEELING BETTER IN WINTER 1. Wake up early “As science progresses, we realise that waking up early is associated with bigger cortisol awakening response (CAR), which is good for you,” says Professor Clow, an inveterate early riser herself. “Being a lark is much better for your mental health than being an owl. People who wake up late have much higher incidences of psychological morbidity, and are much more prone to a range of psychological conditions.” The reason waking up late is bad for you is because it throws your circadian rhythm – the 24-hour cycle that our bodies are synchronised to – off track. “For maximal flourishing we need to function around this 24-hour cycle and sleeping, at night, is an important part of this.” So waking up between 6am and 8.30am, when the body is most responsive to sunlight, fits with our natural rhythms. 2. Keep the morning wake-up time regular “Waking up suddenly from deep sleep produces the worst form of sleep inertia, when the brain’s higher decision-making centres will take several minutes to switch on, especially in young adults,” says Professor Jim Horne from

Loughborough University’s Sleep Research Centre. “In the interim one acts more like an automaton and can make serious mistakes in an emergency situation.” We should therefore avoid confusing the body by waking it up when it expects to be woken up, and that means maintaining “a fairly constant morning wake-up time”. According to Professor Horne, “variable bedtime doesn’t really matter – and actual sleep duration does not have to be fixed. For example – if [you have had] a very late night, get up no more than an hour later than usual and have a 20‑minute nap during that afternoon dip.” 3. Lighten up Around two million people in Britain suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), feeling low in the winter months. “In the summer they’re fine and in the winter they’re groggy, they have low arousal, they want to eat lots of stuff and they’re really depressed and miserable,” explains Professor Clow. Her team published a study a couple of years ago to test the hypothesis that the changing mood of SAD sufferers in the winter might be associated with a reduced CAR. Taking a crossover

approach, they looked at both SAD and non-SAD people in summer and winter. “In summer, their CARs were identical and there was no difference in their mood. In the winter the SAD people had an attenuated CAR.” Conclusion: light massively affects the CAR and therefore the mood, even for people who don’t have fullblown SAD but just feel groggy and slow in the mornings. Thankfully, we can boost our CAR as the nights get longer by using bedside light therapy devices that simulate the dawn. “Ideally, the light starts to emerge about half an hour before you wake up, so it’s mimicking the dawn. Light before awakening increases your CAR and that is associated with increased arousal,” says Professor Clow. “I would recommend to all my friends and to anybody who feels groggy in the winter that they wake up with natural light when it’s dark.” 4. Exercise “Exercise is vital – exercise increases your CAR,” says Professor Clow. It doesn’t matter what time of day you do it, but those who consistently exercise will find that they generally wake up feeling better than those who don’t.

REASONS WHY SPAIN IS THE PLACE TO RETIRE OR EMIGRATE TO

1. Low property prices. Property in Spain for sale is the lowest they have been for over a decade. 2. Regular flights and deals mean that trips to and from the UK; to see family and loved ones are so much easier. 3. Warm and dry climate. Over 300 days of sunshine per year and a moderate temperature throughout the whole year. (Depending on the region & area you live in) If you are thinking of living in northern Spain you need to be prepared for an elevated annual rainfall and colder weather conditions. 4. Very good Spanish road communications and public transport at affordable rates, which is great if you are thinking of living in Madrid or another Spanish city. Trains are very well maintained and the new high-speed rail links all over Spain are going to make travelling in Spain even easier. Motorways and roads despite having many toll roads have very little traffic and makes Spanish road travel a very pleasant experience. 5. The cost of living in Spain is generally lower in comparison to the UK. Despite inflation in the past few years Spain the cost of living in Spain is still cheaper. Council rates, utility bills, eating out and supermarket / fresh produce are all still cheaper than in the UK.

6. Schools in Spain in many areas offer a bilingual education. Children stay children for longer and the values that are shown to children in Spanish schools are of a high standard. 7. A geographical paradise. From snowy mountain ranges in the Pyrenees and Granada to tropical islands in Tenerife and the Canary islands to long stretches of unspoilt coastline and of course thousands of acres of almond, orange, grape and olive groves. Spain also has many world heritage sites including la “Alhambra”, in Granada and the “Serra de Tramuntana”, Mallorca, which was recently declared this year. World heritage sites are determined by UNESCU and Spain is second in Europe being home to a total of 42 World heritage sites. Italy is in first place with 45 sites. 8. Unbeatable National Health Service. Clean hygienic hospitals and very competent medical staff. 9. Spanish people are generally very friendly, tolerant and family orientated. If you make an effort to integrate you will find it very easy to make friends. 10. An unbeatable lifestyle. Fabulous fiestas all over the country all year around, a country oozing culture and places of historical interest, fabulous golf courses, Sandy beaches and a healthy Mediterranean diet.

Greenside Gossip DON’T LOSE YOUR HEAD ON THE COURSE IVIE DAVIES takes a weekly look at the golf scene - golfdavies@gmail.com

Most golfers lose way too many shots due to poor mental decisions and not knowing how to systematically approach each shot and control their emotions to maintain confidence. So let’s look at the five most common mental game mistakes that most golfers make and how to eliminate them.

Most of us don’t have the luxury of a caddie, so we have to create our own “inner caddy”, so we boost our confidence and bounce back quickly from shots we’re not happy with. To do this, start to develop a list of phrases that you can say before and after a shot. Unless you’re playing golf for your livelihood, it really shouldn’t make you upset. After all it’s a game that allows you to practice real life challenges, like facing adversity, focusing, having a positive attitude, staying in the present and so much more. Think about this next time you hit the ball in the trees.

1. DON’T THINK SWING Any thoughts about your swing on the golf course are counter-productive to a good score, whether it is in between shots or during your swing. Trusting what you have is far more important than trying to correct something or forcing a movement while swinging. Trying to consciously control your body during any action makes the task more difficult. Think about if you drove your car while consciously thinking about what your body is doing (“foot on brake, now accelerator…”) and you’d probably crash it! Instead you simply trust your ability as a driver. Thinking about your swing while swinging creates tension which interferes with the free-flow of a good swing. It’s fine to think about it on the driving range when you’re practicing a new movement you’ve learnt in your golf lessons, but on the course your mind has to be quiet to play your best. Swing thoughts usually creep in during a round when a few wayward shots are hit, and subsequently the golfer analyses the swing and attempts to correct the problem. A lot of these off line shots are simply caused by tension, which increases with the more control over the swing the golfer attempts to have. There’s a saying that in golf, “You need to give up control to gain control” and I strongly believe that to be true. Instead of being focused on the body’s movements, we need to be connected with the objective – to hit the ball to a specific target with a pre-determined shot shape, and then trust the body to do what we’ve practiced. The best swing thought is to trust the swing you have, but if you need some help, you can try saying the words “one-two-three” – “one” for the back-swing, “two” for the down-swing and “three” for the follow-through. This should help eliminate the swing thoughts.

2. DON’T THINK SCORE Unless you’re in a situation where you need to know your score for strategy, like during the closing holes of a tournament, it’s best to forget about it. Some of the best rounds in history have been shot while the player didn’t know what

4. DON’T JUST AIM AT THE FAIRWAY OR GREEN

his/her score was. You’ll find that when you play your best, it’s like you don’t care about your overall performance and you don’t judge it, you’re just enjoying playing the game and hitting good golf shots. This is the mentality we need during every round. Score is something that is external and out of your control. Tying your performance to it can create a roller-coaster of emotions. If score is your absolute goal of the game, how are you going to feel when you score an eight on one hole? Will it dent your ego and ruin your round? If you can shift your goal for each round from score to executing a good process and just enjoying the game no matter what, you will score better. Your focus has to shift from outcome to process to play your best.

3. DON’T GET MENTAL How you talk to yourself on the golf course can make a big difference in how you perform. Caddies are generally selected, not only because they can calculate yardages and read greens, but more so because they know what to say to a player and when to say it. You can bet your life if Adam Scott hit the ball O.B. and Steve Williams was to say “What the @#$% was that? How can you hit a shot like that you loser!”, he would be fired on the spot. Saying such things, doesn’t help a player, it would lower their confidence and make them tenser before the next shot. Instead the caddie would offer some encouraging words to help the player forget about it and move on.

As a continuation of Number Three, caddies will always help their player pick a very precise target instead of telling them to aim down the fairway or at the green. But most amateurs do exactly that and it costs them several shots per round. Ask any of the top players and they’ll tell you that they make their target as small as possible. Next time you’re out there, make this a part of your pre-shot routine and you will notice the difference.

5. DON’T FORGET ABOUT YOUR ROUTINE The shot routine (which includes the pre-shot and post shot routine), is an absolute must if you want to play your best golf, and players like Justin Rose are experts at it. It’s the most effective way to ensure that you choose and commit to the right shot and then have the optimal reaction whatever the outcome. If you don’t have a very meticulous routine (which eventually becomes a habit) you are simply throwing away shots.

MOST OF ALL REMEMBER TO ENJOY PLAYING GOLF!

KNOW YOUR RULES TITTER ON THE TEE QUESTION A player’s ball lies near a cactus, and to play the ball, the player would have to stand with his legs touching the cactus. To protect himself from the cactus needles, the player wraps a towel around his legs before taking his stance. He then plays the ball. What is the ruling? ANSWER Provided the player does not breach Rule 13-2 (i.e. he takes his stance fairly), there is no breach of the Rules. However, if the player were to place the towel on the cactus, the player would be in breach of Rule 1-2 for altering physical conditions with the intent of affecting the playing of the hole; as a result, he would lose the hole in match play or incur a penalty of two strokes in stroke play.

A young Pro Golfer wanting to become a Club Professional, went for an interview with the Club Secretary who was a religious man, he said: - "You must answer three questions on the Bible". "1st - Who was born in a stable?" "Red Rum" he replied. "2nd - What do you think of Damascus?” "It kills 99% of all germs" he replied. "3rd - What happened when the disciples went to Mount Olive?" "That’s easy" he said "Popeye kicked the hell out of them!!”

MARVELLOUS MESSI

CLASSY REAL DOWN REDS

Lionel Messi drew level with Raul's all-time Champions League record of 71 goals after scoring twice on Wednesday night. Messi scored in the 36th minute with a soft header after Ajax failed to clear a free kick. His 71st goal in the competition came after he linked with substitute Pedro in the 76th minute as Barcelona qualified for the last 16.

Liverpool fought hard but came up short against Real Madrid as Karim Benzema scored the only goal in their Champions League match on Tuesday night, with Real qualifying for the next stage of the competition. The Frenchman turned in Marcelo's low cross after Simon Mignolet had done well to keep out efforts from Cristiano Ronaldo and James Rodriguez. Liverpool threatened briefly after the break as Adam Lallana fired just wide. But Real remained in control and Steven Gerrard and Raheem Sterling's arrival off the bench could not turn the tide.

Cristiano Ronaldo's 17th league goal of the season helped Real Madrid to move top of La Liga last Saturday with a straight successive league victory, as both Barcelona and Sevilla lost. Ronaldo put the visitors ahead after only two minutes with a low finish after Karim Benzema's square pass. The French forward then set up James Rodriguez (pictured celebrating), who made it 2-0 with a spectacular volley from 12 yards out. Benzema collected Ronaldo's backheel and shot past goalkeeper Roberto for 3-0 before Rodriguez added a fourth from close range after another Ronaldo pass. Madrid entertain Rayo Vallecano tomorrow(Saturday) evening.

CELTA VIGO 1

Barcelona suffered their first home La Liga defeat of the season and saw them knocked off the top of the table as they were beaten by Celta Vigo at the Nou Camp. The visitors took a surprise lead in the second half last Saturday when Joaquin Larrivey finished after Nolito's backheel. Luis Enrique's Barcelona side hit the woodwork four times, with Lionel Messi and Neymar both being frustrated twice. Luis Suarez, making his home debut, had two chances to score an equaliser but missed with a header and had an effort saved by goalkeeper Sergio Alvarez. Barcelona are now fourth in the table and are away to Almeria tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon.

JONATHAS AT THE DOUBLE ELCHE 2

ESPANYOL 1

Elche got a priceless second win of the season last Sunday night that took them out of the relegation area, but the nerves jangled away towards the end as they had two players sent off and the visitors pulling one back from the penalty spot with minutes to go. Elche had lost five of their previous six matches but they started confidently and only a fine save from Espanyol goalkeeper Francisco Casilla prevented Jonathas from opening the scoring in the opening few minutes. At the other end, Manu Herrera had to be alert to keep out efforts from Stuani and Sergio Garcia. They proved to be vital stops as Jonathas gave Elche a 19th-minute lead, heading powerfully past Casilla from Cristian Herrera's cross. Early in the second half, it was once again Jonathas who found the back of the net, the Brazilian latching on to Victor Rodriguez's(pictured) pass before firing home in the 52nd minute. The 25-year-old was denied a hat-trick when his strike from the edge of the area was excellently blocked by Casilla while Elche's hopes of victory were undermined when Rodrigues picked up his second booking for fouling Jose Canas in the 76th minute. The hosts were then down to nine men just nine minutes later when it was adjudged Cisma had handled in the area to earn his second yellow card of the evening. Stuani was finally able to put the ball past Manu Herrera from the resulting spot-kick, thumping the ball high into the top corner. But despite being down to nine men, Elche came closest to scoring again, with Pedro Mosquera being denied by a post in added time. The Ilicitanos deserved their win and go in higher spirits away to Getafe tomorrow(Saturday) late afternoon.

An early goal for the visitors put Torrevieja on the backfoot, but they fought back to get a point, which leaves them just two behind the leaders, Muro, who were held to a draw. Pablo De Mingo’s strike in the fourth minute was a fine shot for Requena, but it took a deflection which meant sure that Oscar was not going to save it. Torry guarded the ball, passed carefully and probed for openings, which came thick and fast, with Steve Ekedi escaping his marker to be in the right place at the right time. Sadly for Steve, his headers missed the target and he was left wondering if there was some invisible force field dragging his attempts wide of the mark. Manager Galiana looked incredulously at the sky at one glaring miss and started to warm up Carrasco as a replacement! Perhaps that gave Steve the inspiration that he needed as he produced a fierce right foot drive to bury to the ball in the far corner of the net from relatively close range in the 32nd minute. That looked like the cue for more goals, but that was the full ration for the early Sunday evening encounter. Twice in the second half, Requena’s side netting rippled

when fans expected more, with Torry only managing 12 goals from 12 games, with only four of the other 20 teams having scored less - and two of those occupy the bottom two places! There was much to admire in Torry's play with a good work rate especially from players like Rafa, who seems to be everywhere for Torrevieja, but besides the lack of fire power, there are too many instances where they created their own problems like getting caught in possession in their own third; playing a poor pass; or putting a defender or keeper under pressure when there is no clear option. As the match wore on, Requena were more than happy with a point and took every opportunity to waste time. Throwins seemed to take ages, the same for corners and place kicks and the five minutes that was added on was simply insufficient! There was though almost a sting in the tail with an adventurous Requena move ending with a strong shot from only twelve yards out and only Oscar in the way. The Torry keeper made an astonishing reflex save to knock the ball over for a corner and save the point. Torrevieja are away to Cullera this Saturday afternoon with a 5.00pm kick-off.

FORMENTERA 1

Based on the recent form of both sides, any person fancying a punt on the match would probably have put it down as a home banker, but Monte’s unpredictable home performances and results meant that nothing had realistically changed at what ought to be their stronghold. Injuries forced the hand of the Montesinos manager, Juanpe, to make several midfield and defensive changes, but there have been concerns about the side’s firepower up front, made even worse as star striker Vaz pulled up with a strain with barely 90 seconds on the clock. The forward never seemed comfortable after that, but Monte did start positively with Formentera’s towering goalkeeper managing to keep the score level. The deadlock was broken in the 17th minute when the visitors took lead courtesy of a freak cross come shot, with the ball beating Monte keeper Lopez much to the surprise of the 240 plus crowd. The goal spurred the home side on,

with greater urgency as chances came from Orouker, M+A, and Macan, and indeed it was Macan who levelled up matters after he chased a hopeless ball to turn inside and fire Montesinos level in the 23rd minute. They then went into the lead four minutes later when M+A rose highest to get 21, whilst the ever-improving Orouker saw his free kick deflected over the bar shortly afterwards. Before half time, the injured Vaz was replaced by Marcos, shortly after a crucial challenge from Orouker stopped Formentera from making it two apiece. Monte largely spent the second half prepared to soak up any pressure with their main efforts coming on the counter-attack, and this reaped dividends when Yonhi came off the subs bench to replace Dario. It turned out to be a great chance by manager Juanpe, as Yonhi’s cross field ball to Dimitry was laid on to Alberto to make it 31. Monte’s next match is away to Callosa Deportiva.

UNITED WE STAND

BUT IS LVG ON THE LEVEL THIS SEASON? At Old Trafford last year, seventh place under David Moyes was deemed unacceptable. The Scot spent (only!) £28m on Marouane Fellaini, and was later sacked. Now, ten games into the new season under new manager Louis van Gaal United sit ninth, having spent £156m and won only three matches - their worst start since 1987 and inferior to when under Moyes. Discuss… To a neutral like me the United hierarchy appears very puzzling these days. I was personally astounded when Moyes got the boot after such a relatively short space of time - and in such a very dis-United manner, where everybody seemed to know before the man himself was personally told. Today lofty Louis lords it at Old Trafford, arrogantly staring upwards in interviews as though searching for divine inspiration, uttering such platitudes as proclaiming United are ‘close’.

To what, exactly? Certainly not to leaders Chelsea who are 13 points ahead, and nasty neighbours and Sunday’s conquerors City who are seven in front. United are also ‘getting better’, LVG claims well, they needed to didn’t they? So where’s your evidence, loudmouth Louis? United weren’t exactly at death’s door before you came. And actually your Red Devils are doing worse than at this time last year under Moyes… Anyone remember the 4 – 0 League Cup drubbing at Milton Keynes? Is it just me who thinks there appears to be one rule for Louis van Gaal and another for David Moyes – who at least looked as though he was suffering, and concerned - which you have say the big Dutchman doesn’t. In talking to the press, van Gaal appears to be able to adroitly shift the blame

onto the players, somehow absolving himself of the responsibility of their position– which now is completely down to him. Three months in and an awful lot of money later, United still don’t look convincing to anyone. I always say in life don’t take over from anyone who’s been doing really well, rather someone who has been doing not-so-good - where the only way is up. Thus van Gaal seems to be getting away with it – so far – in his direct comparison to his Scottish predecessor, but like inevitable death and taxes, league tables don’t lie. The £150m has been spent mainly on hugely expensive fire power like Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao. Di Maria looks flashy and creative, but the Falcao ongoing sicknote adds to the United tale of woe injury list and is not helping. World class players like Rooney and van Persie are not consistently delivering. United look pretty going forward but to me it’s the midfield and defence that are lacking. Firstly the Reds need a Roy Keane/Paul Scholes figure to shake the opposition up a bit, someone who you know isn’t going to be intimidated. The current team are defensively fragile and now with Rojo out injured and Smalling banned, there are more serious central defensive worries. It seems only five minutes ago Vidic and Ferdinand reigned and glared down at the opposition, you didn’t get much from those two. Everyone concerned with United should be down on their knees thanking God for the performances of David De Gea, without his outstanding saves this season Old Trafford would be the Theatre of nightmares… Rooney’ apparently heavy-weighing captaincy issue looks an unnecessary burden, but apart from Van Persie who else is there? Getting sent off for the senseless kick at Downing

BOOTS ON

In a busy programme of Rugby Union, ITV Orihuela Vega Baja will be out for their first league win of the season tomorrow evening (Saturday) when they travel to Albacete. Orihuela comprehensively lost to Murcia in their first territorial division opener a few weeks ago. Meanwhile in the second division, the San Javier Sharks will look to pick themselves up after their 34-nil defeat last month(pictured) at Murcia B, as they entertain the Torrevieja Tigers. Also this weekend, in the Juvenil League, Orihuela provide the warm-up this Saturday for the seniors at Albacete, whilst in the Cadete League, Torrevieja travel to Cartagena. The Ladies league features the clash between the San Javier Sharks and Cartagena with a Sunday midday kick-off.

against West Ham was as ill-considered as Smalling’s but van Gaal didn’t single his captain out for personal criticism, and yet he richly deserved it. Rooney will always give 110% as a player, but he doesn’t fit the tick the necessary boxes of cool, calm and collected like say John Terry of Chelsea and Vincent Kompany over at City United have four world class forwards in Rooney, van Persie, Di M a r i a a n d Falcao, and yet they are only on a par league-wise with honest homespun teams like West Brom and Stoke, who can only drool over having players of that quality – but just where is it getting United? No better than poor David Moyes, so will the Dutchman last ‘til the end of the season at this rate? Probably, barring catastrophes, but the results just must improve. This is Manchester United we’re talking about, remember…

TRICK OR TREAT?

Up until recently (four matches ago) a treat for almost any Newcastle supporter would have been the sack for manager Alan Pardew - well-overdue most would say. But running up to Halloween a terrific trick has been pulled off by the most persecuted manager in English football. Somehow he has answered his considerable critics as his young Newcastle team are now climbing the table with four wins on the spin. Listless, Luis-less Liverpool were the latest to lie down, and you have to say the Magpies are doing it for Alan with relatively unheardof youngsters, like Spanish striker Ayoze Perez. And wait for it – some fans are unbelievably now getting behind Pardew as the right results have come. On Saturday some of the comedic Toon Army dressed as ghoulish skeletons with banners proclaiming ‘Pardew – back from the dead’. Supporters eh? You can’t beat ‘em… Liverpool youse? Hope big Brendan knows what he’s doing, his second team lost 1 – 0 to mighty Real Madrid at The Bernabau - Bill Shankly wouldn’t have played the reserves. Gerrard, Sterling, Henderson, Coutinho and barmy old Balo didn’t even start. Now only need to beat Basel and Ludogorets and the Reds are through to the final stages. Some pressure that with dire punditry predictions abounding around Anfield. No goals in eight Prem starts Mental Mario may actually start when Liverpool play leaders Chelsea in the early match on Saturday - presumably this time with Gerrard, Sterling, Henderson, Coutinho

John McGregor reports

etc – i.e. his first team. It’s a good job for Man City they beat nasty neighbours United on Sunday. Wednesday’s horror show against CSKA Moscow in the Champions League was a disaster, and the Blues dearly desired dreams of European success are in tatters. Losing a must-win tie 2 – 1 on the night at home and with two sent off – you just couldn’t make it up! Personally I blame the gloves some City players were already wearing, its only November: needless to say the Russians weren’t, they probably found it warmer in Manchester than Moscow. The way City are currently playing, Quite Poor Really have got a good chance on Saturday at Loftus Road. In the Mancunian derby, City did narrowly manage to get the better of United, courtesy of a(nother) Sergio Aguero belter - but Chris Smalling’s sending off in the first half was unnecessary, unwise and unlikely to make him popular (LVG quote: ‘stupid’…) at a crucial time in the match. Yebbut, nobbut Saturday’s opponents Palace are now looking wobbly again themselves (lost at home 3 -1 to Sunderland on Monday), so this could be a Crystal clear chance of a choice three points to keep the wolves from LVG’s door. Hey, are players’ ridiculous wages now causing unpayable entrance prices? I was chatting to a Chelsea season ticket holder of 30 years recently while we watched the 1 – 1 draw with Man United. He told me it cost him £998 - that works out at £52.53 per match. Following the Blues 2 – 1 win over Quite Probably Relegated on Saturday, Jose Mourinho claimed it was like ‘playing in an empty stadium’. Young fans - the ones most likely to sing and make noise - are being priced out of the game. Here’s some choice Chelsea fans’ quotes: - ‘It's what happens when the stadium is full of glory hunters and tourists

who just turn up and expect a 4-0 win’… ‘Our home support is shocking, it’s much better at away games’… ‘Chelsea and Man City are two teams thrust into glory with terrible support’. Hmm… How are they doing it? The Saints keep marching in and on, the latest 1 – 0 win for Hulloween (sic) keeps Southampton second. This time a Victor Wanyama lob after only three minutes did the trick, treating those Saints fans who made the long journey to Humberside. At this rate it will only be Saints who could stop Chelsea… Personal prediction from a non-Gooner. Alexis Sanchez is going to be one of Arsenal’s all-time greats, following in the mantle of Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp. Arsene Wenger says the Chilean has ‘Suarez-like’ qualities: ‘By going at you, by being where you do not expect him to be in the box and by having that huge desire to be at the end of things…just has everything in a never-give-up manner, and the goals are coming after a quiet start’. At long last Theo Walcott came on as sub as the Gunners blew away Burnley 3 – 0 with a Sanchez brace, and it seems Olivier Giroud’s return to fitness may be sooner than later. But banana-skin prone Arsenal slipped up in Europe on Tuesday, somehow squandering a three goal lead against Anderlecht to end all square at 3 – 3. Understandably Arsene arsey afterwards…. Leicester are sliding steadily down the table after a bright beginning, and the 1 – 0 defeat at home by improving West Brom will have hurt – and its only Southampton away on Saturday. The Hammers are fifth, following yet another of those exciting 2 – 2 draws against Stoke that are a feature of this super season to date. Villa at home on Saturday looks good for Samsammers to keep up there with the Big Boys.
