PET SHOP WOES PUPPY DIES BUT NO REFUND

By ALEX TRELINSKI A Villamartin woman is 765 euros out of pocket, as well as being emotionally drained, after going to a pet shop and buying a Yorkie puppy that lived for just six days. The Zenia Boulevard outlet, from where she bought the dog, refused to give her a refund and only offered her a swap, with the distraught owner calling in a solicitor to get her money back, but so far without success. Dearbhla Power went to the Dekkan Pet Shop at the Boulevard last November 20th and purchased a Yorkshire Terrier puppy who she named Macey. She paid 765 euros for the little dog, but within three days of getting her home, Dearbhla noticed that not all was well, and rushed Macey to the San Anton vets in Guardamar where the puppy(pictured under treatment) was diagnosed as suffering with the deadly parovirus that young puppies have only about a ten percent chance of surviving. Macey died on November 26th, despite a brave battle from the vets to save her, including being put on an IV drip. In the intervening period, Dearbhla returned to Dekkan and told them about the state of Macey, along with vet reports, as well asking the shop what they were going about the situation.

Dearbhla told The Courier:-“I asked for my money back but I was told and I quote”:“GO TO THE BOX AND PICK A NEW ONE, FORGET ABOUT YOUR DOG THAT'S DYING ,JUST TAKE A NEW ONE HOME NOW". After Macey passed away a few days later, Dearbhla returned to the shop and produced a death certificate for her pet, but despite that, they refused a refund but only offered a replacement dog. She has visited the store a number of times with her solicitor but to no avail, and besides being out of pocket for Macey, she has incurred medical bills and solicitor’s fees. The Courier contacted the Dekkan shop and spoke to a salesperson called Cristian, who told us that they were very well aware of Dearbhla’s story. When asked why she had not been paid back the money that she shelled out for Macey, his response was:“We are not allowed to give refunds. This is the law in Spain”. The question was repeated to him and the same answer was given, and he would not get into further specifics, though the country’s consumer law suggests something different . The Courier then asked to speak to the manager, but we were told that “there was no manager there”, and the phone was put down to terminate the conversation. “They have been so rude”, added

Dearbhla. “I would not even buy a goldfish off them in the light of the problems that I have had with them”. A number of social network sites have featured criticism from some people who have made criticism about the animals that have been sold and kept at Dekkan. In the interest of fairness, The Courier is more than happy to feature more of Dekkan’s side of the story and to speak with the manager. On a pleasanter note, Dearbhla is now the proud owner of a healthy and happy miniature Yorkshire Terrier called Miley that she bought from Petsworld in La Zenia, who she praised for their helpful, friendly and professional attitude.

GET STUFFED!

Unions at San Javier airport have thrown a major spoke in the wheel in plans to shut down the facility transferring flights to Corvera at a future undeclared date. At a news conference yesterday (Thursday), angry union chiefs (pictured) said that they’d filed papers with the European Commission over alleged fraud affecting the public funding of the Corvera project. They also blasted Murcia President, Alberto Garre with the message that “nobody is ever going to move to his private airport”. The Courier reported last week of a protest by airport workers outside the Murcia Assembly building in Cartagena as part of their campaign to keep San Javier open, though President Garre responded during a debate that all their jobs would be safe and transferred to Corvera.

A dog owner whose pet died with a rope around it has been arrested by the Guardia Civil’s Seprona division. Officers were tipped off by people in El Mirador near San Javier after they’d spotted the animal with a rope hanging around its neck in a fenced off area of the village. It had been micro-chipped and the owner was tracked down and charged with animal abuse.

DEAD AND BURIED

Rojales’ new expanded cemetery is looking for clients to rest there after a 400 thousand euro extension has created an additional 116 final resting places which are being put up for rent. The facility at the Nuestra Señora del Rosario (Our Lady of the Rosary) de Rojales is offering 75 year concessions after which relatives must clear out the allotted spaces which will then revert to the ownership of the Rojales council. That timeline has been criticised by some people, with other municipalities not having such time constraints, with Rojales mayor, Antonio Perz, saying that he will now review the initial decision.

Elche council workers are literally shaking up palm trees to avoid the spread of the infamous processionary caterpillars which are a danger to pets and young children. The council had been injecting trees during the autumn of last year in an endotherapy treatment pioneered in Italy to stop the spread of the pest and are now removing their nests before they spread to the ground. The nests are white cone like structures that normally face south and inside the inhabitants can withstand winter temperatures as low as -12 Celsius, so the recent cold stretch would not have bothered them. Meanwhile in Dolores a political row has broken out over the caterpillars with the opposition Partido Popular accusing the ruling administration of not doing enough to stop them spreading around in certain parts of the municipality, which includes an area next to the mortuary.

LOAD OF RUBBISH

Garbage has been piling up in parts of the Orihuela Costa this week, as collection services have been slashed due to two of the four-strong refuse collection fleet being off the road because they have broken down. Complaints of overflowing bins have been received from a number of areas, with rubbish accumulating on roadsides. The council say the vehicles are in the process of being fixed but admitted that there was no actual budget for repairing the lorries which they’ve conceded as being “old”.

UNHEALTHY THE RUSSIANS AREN’T COMING PILE UP Health workers union, Inter Salut, claim that conditions in the ER department of Vega Baja Hospital are unacceptable, with beds piling up in corridors as a picture supplied by them shows. The union says that the blame rests squarely with the management and not with the staff, adding that pile-up's in the hallways happen almost daily which reduces the dignity of patients, with not enough people to look after them. Elsewhere, Torrevieja Hospital is reporting a 95 percent bed occupancy, which is the biggest figure since it opened eight years ago, whilst Murcia’s La Arrixaca hospital has had to postpone operations and ER patients have seen their beds in corridors like at the Vega Baja facility.

THE CARNIVAL IS OVER

Rich Russians are turning their back on Spain and the Costa Blanca after the collapse of the rouble, forced by falling oil prices and the Ukrainian crisis. It's a major blow to estate agents who were counting on Russian buyers to continue to bolster the early recovery of the property market. "Russians are not buying right now," said Ramon Riera, president of FIABCI Espana, a grouping of 120 property specialists. "What's more, some Russians are actually getting rid of their properties here in Spain. There were some deals that were about to go through but the Russians have disappeared." Purchases of properties in Spain by Russians were already declining steadily last

year, according to the College of Registrars. They fell from eight point eight percent of the total in the first quarter of 2014 to seven point five percent in the third quarter, according to its latest figures, and that was before the sharpest plunge in the rouble in midDecember. Riera also fears that amid the crisis, Russian authorities are encouraging their compatriots to stay in the country and buy holiday homes on the Black Sea. Meanwhile, the number of Russian tourists to Spain fell to one point four milllion in 2014, down ten percent compared to the previous year, according to figures from Spain's tourism ministry.

ROJALES BOOST

Several roads around Rojales are set to be resurfaced over the next few months thanks to a grant from the Alicante Provincial Council. 230 thousand euros has been earmarked for the work which will also see improvements to the pavements in various areas including Malecón del Carmen (pictured), and Calle Joaquín González in addition to makeovers for play and green areas.

Torrevieja's Carnival celebrations for 2015 came to an end last Saturday with a closing parade through the city. Over 30 groups took part in the evening event which was centered on Calle Ramon Gallud, and was more informal then the big procession on the previous Sunday.

HOT ROD

LOW FLIES HIGH

Low cost airline carriers flying to Spain reported a bumper start to 2015, with January producing one point six four million flights, up over 16 percent on the same month last year. Ryanair, Vueling, and Easyjet accounted for over two-thirds of the market, with UK travellers making up nearly a third of the journeys (up by 11 per cent on January 2014). With the large-British expat community on the Costa Blanca as well as holidaymakers, AlicanteElche airport took 14 percent of the national share of low cost flight users.

Almoradi firefighters had to deal with a car fire on the AP7 last Saturday afternoon. The Peugeot Partner vehicle was ablaze heading northbound close to the Orihuela/Benferri exit, but the passengers escaped uninjured.

DRAINING SAN JAVIER ROUNDABOUT HONOUR WAY WORK

New drains to stop flooding during heavy storms on the CV905 road in Torrevieja should be completed by the end of next week. The 500 metres of work include building a new cycle path alongside the route in Altos de Limonar area. Some fifteen thousand cubic metres of soil is being excavated some of which will be used in the new park project for El Chaparral.

LIFE SAVERS Algorfa's local police is being equipped with defibrillators in their patrol cars. Officers have been put through paces in a number of training courses teaching them CPR techniques, as they are often the scene first in emergency cases ahead of the paramedic teams.

Passenger numbers may be down and the future seems certain to see its closure, but San Javier airport can put a smile on its face with the news that it has been given a top European honour, as being the best airport on the continent in the two million and under passenger category. The Airport Service Quality awards were based on interviewing travellers across 30-plus areas like the friendliness of staff; disabled facilities; and the quality of food. The honour comes as a timely lift to the facility which saw a big drop in user numbers last month, along with the continuing cloud hanging over its future with the empty Corvera Airport waiting in the wings to take over on a still as yet unspecified date.

The state of the roads around and linking to the Los Montesinos industrial estate has been slammed by the opposition Partido Popular in the town. Their leader, Maria Paredes, says access should be made safer by building a roundabout at the junction with the main road, which will improve safety, She added that the conditions of the roads and the plots on the estate itself needs urgent attention, as a number of companies are choosing other areas like Almoradi to base themselves in, as opposed to Montesinos.

HOMEWARD DOWNWARD BOUND SPIRAL

Prices in Spain fell by one point five percent year-on-year in January, according to official figures. It's the seventh straight month in negative territory, after a fall of one point one percent in December. The National Statistics Institute said the price drop was due mainly to falling oil prices and lower costs for food and non-alcoholic beverages.

NEW NUMBER OPEN PLAN

A British bank robber who has spent the last decade hiding in Spain, is in the custody of the Guardia Civil. The 60 year old man, who was living under a false name in the village of Real de Montroy in Valencia Province, had been sentenced in the UK to fourteen years behind bars for being involved in at least five violent bank robberies. He used somebody else's passport to get into Spain and kept his "new" name for the last ten years.

The Lo Marabu Health Centre in Quesada has a new phone number, namely 966 926 886. The primary centre opened its doors four years ago and caters for over eight thousand patients.

SMELLY MONEY

A 65-year-old woman has been arrested for trying to smuggle more than 37 thousand euros from Andorra in her trainers. The pensioner hid the 500 euros banknotes in the soles of her black sneakers, while also hiding notes in the car she was driving as she left the principality and entered Spain. The Guardia Civil caught the Madrid woman on during a vehicle inspection on a motorway near Lleida, Catalonia. She was allowed to keep one thousand euros as a “minimum necessity” while the rest of the cash was seized.

Two men were slightly injured when the roof of a house collapsed in the Playa Lisa area of Santa Pola on Sunday lunchtime. The two-storey building on Avenida Vicente Blasco Ibáñez was empty at the time but some debris hit a passer-by as well as Frenchman who was relaxing on the beach taking in the sun, but he only suffered a small cut. The building, which was constructed fifty years ago, is mainly used during the summer holiday period.

TIME ON THEIR SIDE

A Granada court has dropped charges against 11 out of 12 suspects in a clerical sex abuse scandal because the crimes fall within the statute of limitations. The court dropped charges of "sexual abuse with penetration, exhibitionism, and concealment of evidence" against nine priests and two laymen accused of abusing an altar boy, in a case that prompted an intervention by Pope Francis, when the grown up altar boy made contact with him. The court ruled that their accuser, now aged 25, should have brought a case within three years of turning 18. One priest, however, is still charged with the more serious offence of "continued sexual abuse".

PIPE UP

Gran Alacant is set to get approval for new water pumping system this month, after raw sewage seeped through breaks in the piping around the Cabo Santa Pola area last summer. Subject to ministry approval, a tender for the two million euro project is expected to be advertised in March by the local Santa Pola council.

DEMO OVER DEMOS

Protesters across Spain demonstrated last weekend against a government decision to stiffen penalties for unauthorized demos. Fines of up to 600 thousand euros and prison sentences are set to be introduced for certain offenses and organizing illegal rallies. The main march took place in Madrid, as protesters blew whistles and banged drums before marching towards a square in the centre of the capital.

A LOT OF GAS

Work to bring natural gas supplies to San Miguel de Salinas has started with the Blue Lagoon area set to be the first to benefit. The project by the Gas Natural company is seeing ditches being dug to lay down piping from work that has already been carried out, whilst the main body of San Miguel will be hooked up with the existing pipeline at La Marquesa that already services Torrevieja,

BRITISH PRAISE

The Los Montesinos disabled association, Adism贸n, has received three thousand euros thanks to local fundraising from British groups. The money will be used to subsidise transport for ten youngsters who will be taken to other areas for speech therapy classes and other treatments that they cannot get in Los Montesinos. The grants were handed out to ten youngsters and their families in a special ceremony in the council chamber, with Adism贸n president Amparo Pizana praising what she described as a priceless contribution from the British community, adding that they hope to keep the grants going for many years.

COLLAPSED PYRAMID

The alleged ringleader of an Alicante Province pyramid scheme is set to face the music after 200 investors lost money in a company called Global Plus, where they were promised interest rate returns of 25 percent. Two directors were sentenced to jail at the end of last year, and now Adriana Mihaela M(pictured) faces prosecution calls for six years behind bars, with investigators believing that she still has access to money that disappeared, despite the police freezing the accounts. Adriana Mihaela M skipped the long arm of the law before being arrested in Elche in December, but has proved to the satisfaction of the judge that she has a home in London and a job in the UK. She will be required to return to Spain for any subsequent hearings and her trial.

A CRAWL TOO MANY

Two Romanian women who pretended to be prostitutes but then stole money and goods off their "clients" have been arrested by the National Police in Valencia City. The duo, aged 20 and 33, operated around the country including Alicante Province and Madrid, and would stop elderly men in the street, offering them sex, They would then embrace them, removing jewellery like chains, rings, and watches in the process, as well as resorting to violence to get what they wanted. The police nabbed them after they were driving in a very slow moving car in Valencia that was moving close to the curb on one of the city's main streets. A check found out that they were wanted in connection to a string of crimes across Spain.

IT’S MASTERMINDLESS!

THE joint was jumping. The place was pulsating. How else can I explain the air of excitement crackling through the pub as we prepared for a cultural explosion. Andromeda Arkwright, our intellectual giantess, had arranged the first major test of our mental prowess. She was putting on a pub version of the celebrated television quiz Mastermind. An area around the bar had been cleared and standing (or sitting) in the middle was an ominous black chair which on closer inspection could be recognised as Dave the barman's seat from his back office. A powerful lamp had been installed on the bar. Its single unyielding beam of light would illuminate the contestants as they each sweated to answer questions on their chosen subjects. The pub was absolutely packed as questioner Andromeda called out: 'Can we have our first contender, please.' The hostelry door swung open as a solitary figure walked in from the street to the chair and seated himself on the black chair. 'Your name?' asked Andromeda. 'Fag Ash Bill,' replied the first contender. 'And your chosen subject?' asked Andromeda. Fag Ash Bill did not reply. He fidgeted a bit and scratched his head in apparent puzzlement. 'And your subject?' prompted Andromeda. Fag Ash Bill shrugged his shoulders. 'What do you mean by subject?' he asked. 'I was outside having a fag when someone standing behind me pushed me into the pub. Just what

the heck is going on?' Andromeda sighed. 'Do you mean to tell me that you are NOT the first contestant in our Mastermind contest?' By now, the pub audience was getting restless. 'Get him off!' came a voice from the shadows. 'Yeah, get me o f f ! ' pleaded Fag Ash Bill who w a s squirming with embarrassment in the b l a c k chair. 'You may go,' said Andromeda. 'You have no points and no passes. Now please may we have our second contender?' Fag Ash Bill was out of the door like a shot, sparks shooting out of his dimped cigarette as he relit it. A second figure then a p p e a r e d , walked to the black chair and sat down. 'Your name?' asked Andromeda. 'Fearful Phil,' replied Fearful Phil. 'But I'm actually the first contender not the second. I was extremely nervous about appearing on the show so I pushed Fag Ash Bill into the building ahead of me. The poor feller didn't even know about the

Mastermind show. I'm so sorry.' Andromeda sighed for the second (or third) time that evening. 'And your chosen subject?' Fearful Phil licked his dry lips. 'Look, can you do me a favour?' he asked.

'I'm still petrified about this Mastermind business. Would it be possible for me to come back next week?' 'If you have to,' said a by now confused Andromeda. 'Please may we have our third or is it second or

indeed first contender.' Fearful Phil legged it out of the door -- and then TWO people walked in. They were carrying a stretcher on which was lying a third figure. The stretcher

w a s tipped over and the person it had contained slithered onto the black chair. At which point Andromeda Arkwright raised a hand. 'Ol' Red Eyes, I already told you at the auditions that I cannot allow you to take part in our Mastermind contest. Our

contestants have to be able to sit properly in a chair and not drop off to sleep every few seconds.' The occupant of the black chair, who was slowly

sliding onto the floor, opened one scarlet peeper and said in slurred tones. 'But I insist on taking part! As a former English teacher I probably know more about stuff than all of your other contenders put together. Now please get on with my two minutes of questions.' Unfortunately, Ol' Red

Eyes had already gone back to sleep and awoke only when the buzzer sounded at the conclusion of 120 seconds of snoring. 'Morning recess is over!' he croaked. 'Back to your classrooms!' The poor fellow was hoisted up by the stretcher bearers and carted off the premises. 'Please may we have our first, final, or is it penultimate, contender,' said Andromeda. 'Your name?' she asked the young lad who had plonked himself down on the black chair. 'My name is Daft Barry.' 'And your subject?' asked Andromeda. 'Cinema,' replied Barry. The audience cheered at the prospect of Mastermind actually getting started. 'You have two minutes on Cinema starting now,' said the question mistress. 'Name the character played by Harrison Ford in the film Raiders of the Lost Ark.' Daft Barry shrugged. 'How the heck should I know?' Andromeda: 'Because you chose to answer questions on Cinema.' Daft Barry: 'No. I chose to answer questions on MY cinema -the Essoldo in the high street. I've memorised the name of every sweetie on sale in the kiosk and can tell you how many seats there are in the stalls. I also know the full names of all the staff. So fire away!' Andromeda turned ashen. 'As so much time has already been wasted, there will be no second round on general knowledge.' 'Aw, that's a shame,' said Daft Barry. 'General knowledge is my best subject.'

NICER AVENIDA

LOOSENING SHACKLES

Orihuela's local police have raided eight establishments in the area that were illegally selling cigarettes, seizing 400 packs, of which have half appeared to have been smuggled into the country without the appropriate official Spanish financial seal. The investigation started after the police were tipped off that cigarettes were being sold illegally to children.

Santa Pola’s Avenida de Salamanca is to have a major overhaul over 600 thousand euros, with most of the money (some 85 percent) coming from the Alicante Provincial Council. The road is one of the main thoroughfares linking to the beaches and has been in urgent need of improvement for some time, especially to the surface which has been breaking up due to a dry 2014.

Spanish banks are at last relaxing their loan-to-value criteria and becoming more prepared to offer 100 percent mortgages, according to brokers. In the past few years, the few lenders which were willing to provide home loans would only offer between 50 and 60 percent of either the purchase price or the value of the property based upon their own surveys whichever was the lower. Now, 80 percent mortgages are becoming more common and intermediaries predict that 100 per cent loan-to-value (LTV) finance is set to become a regular feature over the course of this year.

HIDING TO NOTHING

A drug gang that smuggled over 500 kilos of cocaine in cow hides have been brought before a Torrevieja judge, The eleven men, who are Spanish and Columbian, shipped the drugs over by sea from Columbia to Valencia City, and then transported the drugs in the animal skin to a warehouse on the Cabezo Beaza industrial estate in Cartagena, where the National Police were waiting for them. All of the gang members have previous drug related criminal records and were denied bail.

COUGH UP TIME

State-rescued lender Bankia has been given three weeks to pay up 800 million euros in relation to a number of scandals. Several former executives will have to contribute to the bill after thousands of small investors lost money when investing in the bank. A total of 86 former employees are accused of spending over 15 million euros on company 'magic' cards for personal expenses. Among those accused is former CEO Rodrigo Rato, who will now have to pay up.

PLEA DEAL

A 34 year old man has accepted an eighteen month jail sentence in a plea bargain over two arson attacks in the Torrevieja area in November 2013. One of the blazes was at his ex-girlfriend’s home at La Ceñuela where she escaped unhurt with her children. The Spaniard then set fire to their former shared home in San Luis, most of which was destroyed. Prosecutors originally wanted him to be put behind bars for four years but agreed to the deal which meant that the trial in Alicante did not go ahead. The man was also given a three year restraining order in connection with his ex-girlfriend.

DISCRIMINATION: - METRO STYLE

An internal memo handed out to Madrid metro workers calls for "gays, musicians and beggars" to be more routinely checked for tickets than other passengers. The transport authority is investigating who is behind the leaflet after it was brought to their attention by metro employees. The memo stated that ticket inspectors should pay special attention to checking that “homosexuals, musicians, beggars and sellers” have valid metro tickets on them. “Our board of directors were immediately informed and have opened an investigation to determine who printed and handed out these deplorable leaflets so that they can be brought to justice,” said Madrid Metro director general Ignacio Gonzalez Velayos. The memo made no mention of how the inspectors could identify the various discriminated categories.

PENANCE TIME

An electrician who stole a priceless religious manuscript from the cathedral of Santiago de Compostella has been sentenced to ten years in jail. Manuel Fernández Castiñeiras was found guilty of the “theft of the century” – as it was dubbed by Spanish media at the time – for the stealing the 12th century tome from the safe at the pilgrimage site. The Codex Calixtinus is considered to be the world´s first guide book as it contains advice for walking the famous pilgrimage of the Camino de Santiago as well as liturgies and reports on miracles performed by Saint James. The former handyman who had worked at the cathedral for 25 years before being made redundant admitted to stealing the precious artefact in 2011 after investigators discovered the tome wrapped in a bin bag and hidden in his garage beneath some rubbish. Police also found other valuable manuscripts that had been taken from the cathedral archives as well as more than 1.7 million euros in cash which they believe had been squirreled away over many years.

WHAT A BOAR!

Spain's airport authority says a wild boar that broke through a perimeter fence at Madrid's international airport caused runways to be shut briefly and two landings to be delayed. The beast set off security alarms last Friday and when cameras focused on the spot, operators observed it turning around and loping off through the hole it had made. The incident happened 100 meters from the nearest stretch of runway, delaying a couple of incoming flights. The captain aboard Iberia flight 3179 inbound from London told passengers that an animal had "surprisingly" forced him to abort a landing approach, resulting in a 20 minute delay. The hole was repaired later.

The Caravan and Camping Club Ralliers hold an annual winter rally in the area with around 200 British visitors soaking up the sun as well as raising money for a good cause. A variety of events including a panto and a race night were staged in aid of MABS, which was chosen as the beneficiary because two the Ralliers were diagnosed with cancer last year. Pictured are Grace and Alex Hill who have organised the race night for the last 12 years presenting the cheque of 2,580 euros to Janet Bell and Angela Oliver from MABS.

A donkey kept in dreadful conditions has a new home at the Rojales-based Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre. The donkey, as well as some dogs, was saved in a joint operation with the animal rescue group, Asoka, and the wildlife and environment branch of the Guardia Civil, Seprona. The donkey was in such a small yard that she could barely move, with her hooves severely are severely malformed and its right foreleg twisted almost 180 degrees after years of neglect. “Where she was kept was so small and full of rubbish that she was not able to move and her hooves have not been touched for years,” said Rescue Centre co-founder Sue Weeding. “She has now been trimmed as much as possible and we will monitor her over the next few days to see how she is moving and decide what to do for the best.” Police are now looking to prosecute the donkey’s owner. The rescue was complicated by ongoing problems with the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre’s aging trailer, which broke down early this month but it was temporarily repaired for the rescue, but the Centre is now urgently fundraising to buy a new one.

HARDY SOULS

Temperatures may have gone up in the last week, but that’s put into perspective some of the resilient petanca players that have braved the elements recently in some of the lowest temperatures witnessed for a long time on the Costa Blanca. Members of the teams for the winter season for the Sunshine Radio International Petanca League have shown themselves to be ready for action in all conditions, with the photo showing the Costa Knights team clutching their hot water bottles ready for the fray!

BETTER SIGHT

If you’ve an old pair of glasses that you no longer use, then don’t throw them away, because they will be used to improve the sight of needy people in India and Asia. The Torrevieja Costa Lions club is one of the Lions clubs around Spain that are asking people to donate their unwanted spectacles to the local branches of Specsavers in Torrevieja and Guardamar in a campaign that will run until the end of April. Over four thousand glasses were handed over in the last venture back in 2013, and the Lions will be looking for more of the same this time round.

A PRAYER TO PONDER

A Dumped Dog's Prayer

Don't close the door! Don't push me away. Why are you leaving? Don't make me stay. Slow down the car, I can't keep up. This pavement is hot and my pads are cut. I've got to quit running or my heart will pop. Every muscle is aching. Why don't you stop? I'm so hungry and thirsty. Darkness is near. But I shouldn't leave, he will come for me here. Several weeks have passed, I am dead on my feet. They call me a nuisance because I eat off the streets. Every car that passes, I chase it to see If it's my master coming

DANI

for me. Though I approach those that come near With trust in my eyes and no sign of fear. With hate in their voices and a cold, heartless stare, They threaten to kill me they don't even care. Batter my body with rocks that they throw, I will not leave, he will come, don't you know? Overtaken with weakness, my body is numb. I'm sick and so lonely. Oh please, let him come! I will go back where he first threw me out. I'll wait for him there, he will come, no doubt. My thoughts are fading. My chest feels like lead. I'm sleepy, so sleepy - I can't lift my head. It's so quiet, so peaceful - all remains still.

There is my master at my home on the hill. Yes, I can see him, he's calling my name. His voice is so gentle, his hands are the same. He decided he wants me. Things will be fine. I really do love him, that master of mine.

My tail wags with pleasure. I can't catch my breath. He came in my dreams, but so did my DEATH!! Author unknown www.thedogyouneed.c om is a registered charity, where we rehabilitate the

I’M ALL FOR HUMILIATION

The nut rage former executive of Korean Air, Heather Cho, got her comeuppance last week when she was jailed for a year. Excellent! This spoilt brat thought it acceptable to humiliate a steward on a plane in which she was a passenger because she was served macadamia nuts she did not ask for and which were still in a bag and not in a bowl. She ordered the plane to return to the gate in order to offload the chief steward. The incident demonstrates everything that´s bad about some employers who think their staff are little more than chattels. But it´s not the jail sentence which pleased me the most. It was what South Korea does with convicted criminals. She was made to walk in public past banks of cameras and onlookers and make a formal bow an act of complete humiliation. Just imagine the same thing happening over in Britain? Convicted people having to walk from court and in a public place bowing in humiliation. Do you think that might deter some people from committing crimes? I think it might be an excellent part punishment for convicted benefit cheats. Still on the subject of bad bosses, the news that some NHS top brass, faced with whistle-blowers highlighting bad practices, were more likely to bully and isolate the member of staff who put his or her head above the parapet rather than sort the problem out, made me extremely angry. NHS Trusts will now have to appoint a guardian to help whistle-

blowers, but what an indictment on appalling management within some of the Trusts! Bad practices in a private firm are only likely to damage that company, but when it comes to the NHS, it’s the patients who are most likely to be the victims,

with their pension rights as well. Hitting bosses where it will hurt them the most will exercise their minds and make it far more likely that they will put patients first. And the same should apply for care homes, hospices and everywhere else where

donors are on the list of those helped by HSBC of tax avoidance. And there are counter claims that Labour super-rich supporters are also in the HSBC tax protection. But can someone please explain to me how anyone who is super rich,

to the previous Labour administration who failed to act! If you are still looking for proof that a major overhaul of laws governing trade unions is long overdue, then the next story should satisfy you. London Underground

take strike action represented just eight per cent of their colleagues. Some unions get barmier by the day. Heaven help us if they ae backed up by an equally barmy future Labour Government supported by an even more barmy Scottish National Party, likely to be more than eager to go to bed with them. Heaven help Britain.

There´s

and that is totally unacceptable. A review has found that too many NHS staff were put off speaking out because they "fear victimisation", while others did not raise concerns because they felt they would not be listened to. The review heard stories of staff that have faced isolation, bullying and counterallegations, and there were even some problems with some of the whistle-blowers who were discriminated against in their next job! How appalling is this? Not only should the law protect whistle-blowers, but it should also make it an offence for any manager to bully one: - and on pain of losing his or her job together

people are at risk. Anyone who has listened to the revelations over the past week that the HSBC bank has assisted the super-rich to avoid paying tax must be sickened by it. Here we go again with greedy bosses: - people who are paid ridiculous salaries and bonuses, whether they be bankers or footballers and then doing their utmost to avoid paying just a fraction of their wealth to help those less fortunate than themselves. In my book these type of people are suffering from some kind of illness - where greed has become an obsession. We´ve heard of allegations from Labour that Tory

and who goes to a bank to find ways of paying the minimum of tax can possibly be a Socialist supporter? Aren´t Socialists supposed to be people who help those less fortunate than themselves, or am I missing something? The word hypocrite comes to mind. Finally on the subject, it seems that in the encounter of who is worse in sucking up to tax-dodging super-rich political donors, it was Miliband who shot himself in the foot. He described David Cameron as a "dodgy Prime Minister surrounded by dodgy donors", in a row over party grandees with Swiss bank accounts - but then it transpired that tax avoidance was highlighted

drivers have voted to strike over the sacking of a colleague who failed an alcohol breath test. He was dismissed for failing two random breath tests, having gone through a full disciplinary hearing and appeals process, as well as a separate independent director's review. Banged to rights you might think, but not good enough for the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union who claim the type of breathalyser used did not account for people with diabetes. Members voted by 229 votes to 221 to take action, with the turnout just a mere 42 percent of the membership. The number of drivers who had voted to

trouble down in a graveyard in Leicester. It´s a multi-faith graveyard, where a gypsy great grandfather, aged 89, was buried last month. He was a popular figure in the Romany gypsy community and his family paid £2,500 for three plots so that tributes could be left. But it has upset a Muslim family who owned a plot next to the gypsy grave, and who complained to the council about their relative being buried next to a 'non-believer'. The gypsy family have vowed they will fight tooth and nail to prevent their relative´s coffin being moved. It’s yet another problem which has popped up in multi-cultural Britain. There is one good thing though about the influx of Muslims into the UK, namely the fact that number of young people drinking alcohol, going on binge drinking and taking drugs is being steadily reduced in some areas of the country.

FIFTY SHADES OF CONCERN

It may seem strange at first to know that this week I am going to write about something I know almost nothing about, but it is something that I feel strongly enough about to put pen to paper, figuratively speaking. I am so affected by this that I’m going to cover this subject next week as well, so what am I writing about? Last weekend probably the most highly anticipated movie of the year(pictured) was released in cinemas both here in Spain and around the world, and it’s the film that many have apparently been waiting for. There was absolutely no coincidence that it was released for Valentine´s Day I´m sure was no mistake, and we’ve all read the hype and I´ve seen the trailer but for me, that´s as far as it goes for “Fifty Shades of Grey”. There are apparently three books in the ´Fifty Shades of Grey´ series and I have not opened one page of any of them, nor have I read much about them, so, apart from a basic knowledge that they

are fundamentally about s a d o masochistic sex, I am unfamiliar with the plot. A few of my students have read the books and were eagerly anticipating the film so I asked them to tell me why it was so interesting, and what was it about the book that fired the imagination. Apart from the obvious fact that it´s about sex, it is also apparently about love and how the main female character teaches the main male lead how to fall in love. So, in order to write this book I guess that the author, E L James has some experience of this sex world and on that point, I´m not going to comment. Everyone is entitled to live their lives as they wish, so long as they are doing it

with the full consent of everyone involved. However there are a few points that I wish to raise, namely the comments from the movie critics that there is not enough sex in the big screen adaptation. I won´t go into detail about the lack of detail in the film but it did make me wonder what exactly these experts wanted! If they are after hard core sado-

masochistic sex then maybe the way to go is in the direction of Soho, as I´m sure that there are plenty of movies that will satisfy their cravings! However the main point I want to make is about a worrying article that I read online about some of the phrases in the book. This is meant to be a story of love that in the end conquers all, but along the

way a young girl is introduced to a side of sexual relations she probably never imagined existed. All in all everything works out in the end for the best, as they fall in love and like a fairy tale, live happily ever a f t e r . Nevertheless, this is not exactly how this novel is written and I will give you some examples from the text to highlight my point that this is not a book to be read lightly, and how I hope these ideals were not carried over into the film. Firstly, as a bit of background study (of course), I have read a little about BDSM (a variety of erotic practices, the initials being taken from the words bondage, discipline, dominance and submission and

sadism and masochism). It is not something that I am particularly interested in but there are certain things that I guess we all know from watching films or TV programmes, especially the crime shows! The most important thing we tend to notice is that there are ´safe´ words, which are words that are used when the ´game´ is getting a little out of control or the person on the receiving end of whatever is being done to them wants to stop. ‘No’ should mean what it means however there may be those for whom ´no´ isn´t what it seems and therefore they chose another word, just to be on the safe side. BDSM should be safe and enjoyable for all, and of course part of that is dominance. There are though certain parts in the book that are not about BDSM but solely about the male character being in charge of the female. Next week I will explain the quotes that I have seen from the book and why I believe this isn´t just a light hearted piece of fiction, but have much deeper meanings.

Spanish 160

¡Hola!

TRELI ON THE TELLY SCORCHING SUMMERS

with ALEX TRELINSKI I’ve never ever seen so much promotion for just one programme namely Channel Four’s Indian Summers, which almost made me not want to watch it because of all the hype! Was this some kind of sub-standard drama that Four had wasted a record breaking £14 million quid on in what has been the biggest scripted commission in the channel’s 32-year history? Anybody casually viewing Channel Four, along with E4 and More Four would have been bombarded by the promos over the last three months, but mercifully they have been justified in advertising a cracking period drama. Set in the thirties, the series follows a group of British expats and Indian vil-

lagers during the holiday season in Shimla, a hill-station in the Himalayan foothills that was popular for breaks in colonial times (the actual location was Malaysia for the shoot!). The star is the wonderful Julie Walters in a terrific role as Cynthia, a London working class lady who runs the club, but that’s it for the known names, as we’ve got a cast of unknowns that after the ten week run, will have made a name for themselves. This is nothing like the old Raj stiff upper-lip stuff of The Jewel of the Crown some 30 years ago, but a tale of relationships involving the Brits and

Indians, with the most gorgeous settings. Dare I say this is like Downton Abbey, but with the heat turned up and a sharper script (sorry Julian Fellowes), in a fastpaced opening episode, which brought many strands and characters. A full and proper judgement cannot be

made without taking the ten episodes as a whole, but I very much liked what I saw and that came as a nice surprise. The producers want to do another four series leading up to India’s independence, and I suspect that will depend on the international sales for Indian Summers.

So far, so v e r y g o o d , w h i c h allows me to forgive Channel Four for what was a pretty p o o r 2014 for them. B B C Drama is in fine fettle at the moment, and whilst Indian Summers w a s launching last Sunday night, BBC1 kicked off a three-part dramatisation of JK Rowling’s bestseller, The Casual Vacancy to do with a battle in a West Country village for a parish council seat in a by-election. Politics, class and dark secrets fea-

ture in an idyllic setting, as the election is thrown into turmoil. You can’t quibble with the cast, but JK’s tale is a bit too clichéd and predictable, though pleasant enough. I suspect most folk will have watched it and Indian Summers, and it’s the tale from the sub-continent that will get most tongues wagging. ITV’s Saturday shocker of a schedule gets a much needed lift tomorrow night with the return of Ant and Dec’s Saturday Takeaway. Good luck to the guys in what is always a good fun show, but the horse has truly bolted away from the stable in the best ever series of The Voice over on BBC1, which has bested The X Factor for ratings and of course the quality of the singers. And what isn’t there to like about the lovely Rita Ora?

1/6. Eight celebrities embark on a 12-day expedition in the rainforest of Costa Rica, where they must learn to navigate difficult terrain, build shelters, make fire and eat the food that nature provides. From abseiling down ferocious waterfalls to crossing perilous rapids, the stars face a range of challenges and Bear himself eliminates one of them each week, leaving three in the final. Kelly Holmes, Mike Tindall, Emilia and Laurence Fox, Max George, Jamelia, Vogue Williams and Tom Rosenthal make up the team.

4/4. A look at weather at its strangest and fastest. A cloud envelops a supersonic jet, an invasion of tumbleweed swamps an entire town, apocalyptic black rain falls from the skies in Iceland, and an onlooker captures a rare fire rainbow on film. In Japan, a skier searches for legendary `snow monsters' on the slopes of a ski resort, while a storm chaser comes face to face with seven towering waterspouts in the Florida Keys. There's also a blood-red waterfall, and what explains the most otherworldly place on Earth, where there are two suns and no horizon?

The team explores how erosion has shaped the landscape in Suffolk. Matt Baker joins scientists using the latest technology to view the lost town of Dunwich - Britain's `Atlantis' - swallowed by the sea centuries ago. Ellie Harrison finds out how coastal erosion is helping to recreate important saltmarsh habitats and meets author Helen Macdonald, whose love of goshawks inspired a literary smash. Adam Henson watches the Gloucestershire fire service training to rescue animals and Tom Heap asks if the price of milk should be increased.

Africa 15:45 - BBC TWO

This lavish film about African wildlife, presented by David Attenborough, has some delightfully humorous moments tucked in among the more serious – and occasionally nightmarish – scenes. A young leopard dangles from a tree in an ungainly fashion, a flock of unbearably cute baby ostriches nervously trot behind their mother on a trip to the overcrowded waterhole.

River Monsters 20:00 - ITV 4

The story goes that a woman was wading in the shallows of a Colombian river when she was attacked and killed by something in the water. When the woman’s body was found it had a single puncture wound which is an indication that her attacker was a stingray. But, Jeremy Wade reasons, it must have been a massive fish to have the strength to drag and hold a person down under the water, so he’s eager to try to land one himself. Wade has history with rays – they’re notoriously difficult to catch and it’s a heck of a battle trying to land this monster. But then disaster strikes – Wade’s rod breaks.

WHAT IS SARCOIDOSIS?

Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease that affects several organs in the body, mostly the lungs. The resulting inflammation can cause the formation of lumps known as granulomas in the organs. This granuloma can affect the shape or function of the organ it is found in. Sarcoidosis may be with symptoms or without. Most of the time, it improves or clears on its own. More than half of sufferers have no symptoms after 9 years. Researchers are not exactly sure what causes Sarcoidosis. However there is very strong evidence to suggest that it arises from a malfunction of the immune system. In a healthy person, white blood cells fight infections and cause inflammation without any problem. But in those suffering from sarcoidosis, when white cells fight infections, they clump together into balls and form these granulomas. It is

also known that foreign particles such as toxins and microbes – viruses, bacteria, fungi may trigger these abnormal responses that cause sarcoidosis. Cases of Sarcoidosis have also been known to occur in recipients of donated organs i.e. heart, lung and bone marrow. The symptoms of Sarcoidosis are varied and largely depend on the organs affected. As the lungs are mostly affected, respiratory symptoms are the commonest. These symptoms may begin suddenly and also stop at any time. Others will show no symptoms even though organs are affected. Common symptoms may include: shortness of breath, persistent cough, reddish bumps on the skin, fever, weight loss, and night sweats. These symptoms are similar to those of tuberculosis. There may be visual problems, joint pain, hearing loss, depression and a host of other problems. One clinical study found that in people with Sarcoidosis, there is an altered response in their intestinal immune system. This abnormality was accompanied by sensitivity to

wheat protein. So it’s advisable for sarcoidosis sufferers to remove wheat from their diet. Enhancing the immune system also helps in managing the disorder. And there are a number of ways to do so. Adequate sleep is essential for maintaining a strong immunity. Regular exercises are also important. This can be taking a brisk walk for half an hour every day. Vitamins A, D and E are essential for a healthy immune system. The best source of vitamin D is sunlight. This is best in the early mornings when the intensity is not damaging to the skin. Commonly used herbs for improving immune function are: Echinacea and Reishi. Natural herbs stimulate the production of white blood cells and other immune cells. These immune cells can take a while to build-up in the body. Immediate results can be achieved with immunoglobulins that contain pre-formed antibodies and immune proteins. You may be shocked to discover that 2 slices of whole grain wheat bread will raise your blood sugar level higher than 6 teaspoons of pure white sugar. The story of the strain of wheat we now consume starts sometime in the 1970s. Scientists for good reason wanted to improve on the existing wheat plant, to improve on its yield and ability to withstand adverse weather. Before then, wheat was a different plant. This new strain of wheat was never tested for safety before it was introduced to us as food. We now know that the genetic changes in the newer strains of wheat accounts for their dangerously higher levels of tox-

ins. Wheat is a grain and generally grains are poor quality foods because they contain many toxic proteins including – Glutenin and Gliadin. Glutenin is like glue and gives wheat its doughy, twisty nature. Gliadin is the cause of coeliac disease. It is also an appetite stimulant, and the cause of obesity epidemic facing many societies. Wheat is also recognised as a major cause of heart disease. It increases levels of small particle LDL (low density lipoprotein) which inflames arteries. Recently it was discovered that gliadin protein in wheat plays an even more sinister role in the body by uncoupling tightly bound intestinal cells

to allow toxins into the body. Wheat also contains a weird complex carb known as amylo-pectin A, which causes unhealthy increases in blood sugar levels .So what benefits await us when we commence a wheat free diet? Well, without the appetite stimulation of wheat, most people notice dramatic weight-loss, especially a reduction in waist line. Diabetics will also notice that their blood sugar levels are better controlled and they require less medication. Joint pains vanish or ease off considerably. If you have a chronic illness, perhaps you should stop eating wheat for 3 months and see how you feel.

ADVICE: Stan was having problems with AutoComplete in ADVICE: Ray was having some issues with Adobe Flash Internet Explorer player not playing well with his computer Hi Richard. Having trouble turning off autosuggest, I have even tried going into the preferences page and unticking the turn on suggestions box and saving which is ok until I close I.E and when I reopen it and I have to go through it all again how can I turn this off for good? Stan

Q

A

Hi Stan, I w o n d e r whether you m e a n AutoComplete in Internet Explorer? In which case you need to do the following… 1. Open Microsoft Internet Explorer. 2. Click Tools and then Internet Options. 3. In the Internet Options window click the Content tab. 4. Click the AutoComplete button. 5. Check or uncheck the options you wish to have or not have AutoComplete.

ADVICE: Sally had accidentally moved his task bar to the right of the screen and wanted to get it back to the bottom.

Q A

I have somehow managed to drop my diary on to the mouse this in turn moved the begin bar at the bottom of the screen to the right side of the screen. Please can you advise on how to move the bar back to the bottom of the screen?

Hi Sally, in order to move the task bar you need to click and hold an area of it that is blank (i.e. an area that doesn’t have an icon to launch a program) when you click, hold and drag, you will move the task bar. So in your case, click hold and drag towards the bottom of the screen and you will move the task bar back; don’t worry if it doesn’t move as soon as your mouse does, as you drag closer to the bottom of the screen it will jump to dock in the correct place.

Good morning Richard, I have just had an update to Adobe Flash Player version 11.3.300.271 which is causing problems, I have tried to uninstall but it won’t, maybe I have not got an uninstall program for this. If you delete the file in Windows System 32 would this remove it. I have disenabled it in add-ons for the moment.

Q

A

Hi Ray, probably the best thing to do is to fully remove Adobe Flash player, you can do this easily by downloading and running the uninstaller for flash player, you can find it at this address…

http://download.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/support/uninstall_flash_player.exe …with full instructions on how to use it at… http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-playerwindows.html#main_Download_the_Adobe_Flash_Player_uninstaller …yes it’s a bit of a long website address, but I assure you that the information on the Adobe site is pretty helpful.

ADVICE: Robbie was having problems with his computer signing out Lately if I am sending e-mails or looking at my favourite’s etc. for no reason the screen goes blank. I then have to click the mouse and fined I have to sign in again in the owner’s box. This happens regular. Would you have a solution? I have Windows XP

Q

Hi Robbie, it sounds like the screen saver is coming on and is set to lock the screen when its interrupted, you can check if this is the case by turning off this functionality, in Windows XP you can do this by right hand clicking the desktop and selecting properties, then click the screen saver box, you will see a tick in the “on resume display Welcome screen”, remove this tick and click OK.

10 REASONS TO HOPE APPLE ISN'T REALLY MAKING A CAR Rumours of an Apple car may be premature but what would that future look like?

We have a new contender for most improbable Apple rumour. Long-time Apple commentator, Bryan Chaffin, of the Mac Observer, says he is “certain” the company is working on a car. Chaffin’s sources say that, even as Elon Musk’s electronic car firm Tesla Motors is stealing away record numbers of employees from Apple, the house the Steves built is hiring Tesla employees right back – and specifically, “the kind

of people from Tesla with expertise that is most suited to cars”. But could Apple really do it? The company is certainly in the business of making desirable hardware sold at comfortable margins, but that might not translate. After all, going by Apple’s track record, there are likely to be some speed bumps in the way. 1. The first model will crash, a lot Everyone knows the advice with Apple products:

skip the first generation. The iPod, iPhone, and iPad were all slightly lacklustre, and the first release of the software is generally crashprone. Fine in an MP3 player; not so good on a highway. 2. The antenna won’t pick up radio (but it’s all your fault) Are you sure you aren’t just holding the steering wheel wrong? But don’t worry, it’ll soon turn out that other car companies have exactly the same problem, it’s just no one reads their manuals. 3. Bono will be on the stereo, whether you like him or not You don’t understand, it’s a gift from Tim Cook. A gift which will have you frantically searching through user forums trying to work out how to regift it, and permanently afraid of shuffling

songs lest U2’s gentle croons assault you again. 4. It’ll cost twice as much as a Google car that’s also a bit bigger Meanwhile, people who actually prefer a more compact car will be left high and dry by the ongoing wars to sell the biggest car possible, as Silicon Valley forgets yet again that not everyone is like them. 5. There will be a social network to let you share your favourite drives It’ll be called “Vroom”. No-one will use it, it will fail almost instantly, and if you mention its name a few years later, even Apple will feign ignorance. 6. The built-in GPS will be Apple Maps Good luck! 7. After three years software updates will make it slow to a crawl Don’t say “planned obsolescence” though. And real-

ly you should be thankful – other cars don’t upgrade their operating system at all. 8. It’ll bend badly if you drive it wearing skinny hipster jeans In, like, three cases ever. But the media will be all over them. 9. You’ll be able to buy a solid gold version At least until the first drivers realise that such a car

would struggle to overcome its own inertia, and be unable to support its own weight, trapping the occupant inside an expensive, shiny coffin. 10. And of course … the battery will run out by 4pm every day But it’s fine, because you’ll be able to plug it into your in-car charger … um …

SEE THE LIGHT!

It is important to ensure that headlamps conform to Spanish Legal requirements in order for the vehicle to pass its ITV (MOT). When motorists find out that their vehicle needs new headlamps due to them being yellowed and faded by the hot sun this can be an expensive and unexpected shock. This is where The Headlamp Exchange comes in. A unique formula has been developed to renovate dull, dirty, yellowed and faded headlamps

like new. This service can be provided at a fraction of the cost of new headlamps. This method is proving extremely popular and saving people the expense if buying new head lamps. The Headlamp Exchange has been in La Marina Village now for many years - in fact we are celebrating our 10 years in business this year! As a motoring business we are happy to help you with your vehicles from re-registration of your vehicle and all mechanical work, to LHD headlights and of course, our speciality - headlight cleaning. WHEN IS A PIE NOT A PIE?

A petition arguing that a pie with a pastry lid is really just a casserole has gained over 5,000 signatures. What do you think? When is a pie not a pie? As British Pie Week approaches, it’s a hot topic for lovers of all things pastry-encased. Pies recently hit the news when one incensed citizen launched a Government e-petition to “make wrongly describing a casserole with a pastry lid a criminal offence”. The petition currently has around 5,000 signatures, falling somewhat short of the 100K needed to be considered for a debate in Parliament. Yet, gathering by reactions the petition has had online and among pie makers, it’s clearly a topic many Brits take seriously. So, is a true pie one which is fully covered in pastry, with a base, sides and lid? The creator of the pie-tition, one ‘Bill T Wulf’, certainly thinks so. Wulf says the Oxford English Dictionary defines a pie as “a baked dish of fruit, or meat or vegetables, typically with a top or base of pastry”. However, my Sixth edition of the OED describes a pie as “encased in or covered with pastry”. The online version of the OED says a pie “frequently also has a base and sides”. Meanwhile, according to the excellent Oxford Companion to Food, the meaning of the word pie has evolved over many centuries and varies according to both country and region. These definitions make a hard-line stance harder to support – surely there’s room for a puff-pastry topped steak and ale, a fluffy cottage pie, or a sharp and sweet lemon meringue under the pie umbrella? Not if you ask the organisers of the British Pie Awards. Only pies with ‘a filling totally and wholly encased in pastry’ are eligible for the annual awards, which take place in Melton Mowbray on 22nd April 2015. Why don’t they allow other types of pie? “We had to stop somewhere otherwise any dish with a bit of pastry or potato

might have been entered,” says Matthew O’Callaghan, chairman of both the awards and of the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association. “The awards are about celebrating the craft of pie making. It’s a lot easier to put a bit of pastry on top of a dish and call it a pie. A real pie encased in pastry means getting the ingredients right, making the pastry, and ensuring an even bake throughout.” O’Callaghan tells me that there’s never really been any serious debate about allowing in lattice tops, and I’m told by someone else involved in the awards that when the issue was raised a few years ago it was shouted down with cries of “we might as well let quiches in”. As for fish pie, cottage, shepherd’s or any other midweek favourite crowned with mash, they’re not allowed near the British Pie Awards either. “Potato-topped pies aren’t pies,” says O’Callaghan firmly. The awards were set up for similar reasons to the petition – to celebrate and distinguish artisan British efforts like the pork pie from ‘"pastry-topped casseroles" and to "rescue" the word pie from what purists consider to be decades, nay centuries, of misuse.

But if we’re not going to call our topless, bottomless or mash-topped efforts by the name pie, what on earth are we going to call them? O’Callaghan has a few suggestions. Puff-topped pies should be “pastry-topped casseroles”. Mash-tops are “potato-topped casseroles”. As for lemonmeringue and open-faced arrivistes from across the pond like pumpkin and pecan, they are not pies…but ‘tarts’. “We don’t want tarts anywhere near the British Pie Awards.”

TIGER, NOT BURNING BRIGHT

The other week, we witnessed the all-too-familiar sight of Tiger Woods being carted off the golf course due to an injury. Now he is taking indefinite leave! In Woods’ past nine events, he has had six missed cuts or withdrawals and two last-place finishes. He hasn’t won a PGA Tour event in 17 months and hasn’t won a major championship in more than six years. Add an injury report that more closely resembles that of a Premier League footballer, as opposed to a professional golfer and combine that with what appears to be a case of the chipping yips, and it is easy to see why many experts are concluding that the Woods era has officially ended. But what happens once Tiger does leave the game of golf for good? This is a question that absolutely terrifies anyone that in any way depends on professional golf for earnings. Here are areas of the professional game that I think will be greatly impacted once Woods drives his golf cart off into the sunset. The decline in US television ratings at events where Tiger Woods is either not present or not in contention has been well documented through the years. Woods missed the 2014 Masters due to back surgery, and despite exciting storylines such as Jordan Spieth attempting to become the

youngest-ever Masters champion, Fred Couples attempting to become the oldest Masters champion

2014 U.S. Open were down a staggering 46 percent from 2013 and hit its lowest level since at least 1996.

and the long-hitting Bubba Watson looking to win his second green jacket in three years, the weekend American television ratings hit their lowest level since 1957, which was the year before Arnold Palmer won his first Masters. It is said that Woods typically contributes a 30-35 percent US ratings increase when he is in the field at the Masters. There was a study on Tigers impact on the Masters' television ratings since 1997, comparing events when Woods was within five shots of the lead to events where he was not in contention. This study concluded that Tigers draws an average of 1.2 million more viewers to the Masters' broadcast when he is within five strokes of the lead. The overnight American ratings for the final round of the

Despite Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler battling it out for the 2014 Open Championship, the ratings for the event decreased by 26 percent from 2013 when Woods was in contention. So why is this a big deal? Well, at least 99 percent of the viewers for any given golf tournament will tune in their television sets, whilst only about one percent (and typically less than that) of the total eyeballs focused on a Tour event will actually attend that event in person. So, any dramatic decrease in television ratings when Woods is not in the field or not in contention essentially mean that significantly fewer individuals are watching golf, certainly Stateside. Once Woods decides to leave the game for good, millions of viewers will probably leave with him, and this will have a negative knock on effect through every aspect of professional golf in America. Ticket prices will drop and air fares and hotels aside, if you have ever dreamed of attending something like the Masters in Augusta, but the ticket prices too steep, now is the time to make a move! When Woods announced that he would not be attending the 2014 Masters due to back surgery, ticket prices plunged by 22.5 percent the very next day. Once he decides to leave the game for good, ticket prices for

virtually all events will more than likely continue to decline, certainly in the States. This is, of course, good news for many diehard golf fans. Prior to Tiger Woods’ arrival on the PGA Tour in late 1996, the Tour handed out a total of $101 million in prize money. Between 1997 and 2008 (Woods’ prime years) the total prize money handed out by the PGA Tour increased by an average of 9.3 percent per year, bringing the Tour’s total purse to $292 million by 2008. The PGA Tour distributed $3.1 billion in prize money between 1997 and 2008. The financial impact Woods has had on professional golf

then and a subsequent loss of form, has seen purses decreased by 2.3 percent per year. It was a remarkable run, but one that now appears to be over. All signs are pointing to a rather steep decline in the game of golf in general, and particularly the professional portion of it. Tiger created a financial whirlwind over the past two decades, and in the process he made anyone that was in any way associated with the game more wealthy than they otherwise would have been. It will become increasingly difficult for companies to justify spending millions to sponsor sporting events that no one is watching.

eyes on golf broadcasts mean less value for sponsors that are currently paying large sums of money for players to use their equipment and wear their logos. Why in the world would any company continue paying golfers large sums of money to wear their logos when the sport’s audience has been cut in half? This article is not meant to serve as some kind of doom-and-gloom, end-of-days prediction for the game of golf. It has been played in a somewhat professional capacity for more than 150 years and great players have come and gone throughout the game’s history. It has survived world wars, globaliza-

is absolutely mind-boggling and had never really been experienced in any other era of the game, or within any other sport, for that matter. If Woods had been accounting for between 30 and 50 percent more viewers per PGA Tour event, one could only assume that the endorsement earnings of these other golfers were at least 50 percent higher during the Woods era than they otherwise would have been. Many believe that the Woods era officially ended when he struck that fire hydrant outside of his Isleworth home in November of 2009, since

Tournaments that Woods regularly attends are significantly more valuable for sponsors, because more attendees, more television viewers and more attention focused on the event all increase the value of the sponsorship. Events that Woods does not regularly attend will almost always receive far less attention and produce significantly lower television ratings, which, of course, diminish the overall sponsorship value. The vast majority of professionals will almost certainly see a decrease in their endorsement earnings in the years after Woods has quit the game. Fewer

tion, and financial recessions. Golf isn’t going anywhere, but there is a big difference between a sport that is surviving and a sport that is thriving. It has thrived over the past 20 years and reached a level of popularity that no one thought was possible for a “fringe” sport. The next 20 years will likely look a lot different for it, but golf will survive. Rory McIlroy may be the odds on favourite to win every major, but there are a crop of pros who will challenge his dominance in the most coveted events of the year. Woods giveth, and his exit from the game will inevitably taketh away.

KNOW YOUR RULES TITTER ON THE TEE QUESTION A player replaces his ball on the putting green, at the correct spot some 30 centimetres from the hole, and the ball stays at rest. As he is about to address the ball, it rolls into the hole. What is the ruling?

ANSWER He is deemed to have holed out with his previous stroke.

Two blokes in their mid-twenties were sitting at the bar. One of the blokes says to his mate: "You look tired." His mate says: “I’m exhausted. My girlfriend and I have sex all the time. She wants me three and four times a day. I just don't know what to do." A senior citizen, sitting a couple of seats away, overheard the conversation. He looked over at the two young men and with the wisdom of years says: "Marry her. That'll put a stop to that nonsense."

BACK ON TARGET LEADERS BOOED SCHALKE 0 REAL MADRID 2

Cristiano Ronaldo ended a three-game goal drought as Real Madrid took control of their Champions League last-16 tie with Schalke in Gelsenkirchen on Wednesday night. The forward's form was questioned before kickoff but he headed in Dani Carvajal's cross to

REAL MADRID 2

open the scoring. He also created the second goal which arrived moments after Schalke's Felix Platte had smashed against the bar. Marcelo capitalised, driving into the top corner, and the holders will take a healthy lead to Madrid on March 10th.

GUESS WHO?

DEPORTIVO LA CORUNA 0

Real Madrid took a small step to restoring their pride after their derby thrashing by Atletico as they beat Deportivo La Coruna at the Bernabeu last Saturday. Carlo Ancelotti's side made a nervous side to the game but took a 20th-minute lead through Isco (pictured celebrating), and then Karim Benzema sealed the points in the 73rd minute. Real stay top of the Primera Division thanks to the win but this was far from an assured performance from the European champions, who were booed by their own supporters on several occasions. Next for the champions is a Sunday night encounter this weekend at Elche.

BARCELONA 5 LEVANTE 0 Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick in his 300th Primera Division match as Barcelona thumped struggling Levante last Sunday. Neymar opened the scoring, with Messi adding the second in the 38th minute as Barcelona looked totally comfortable against their lowly opponents. The Argentina striker added his second and Barcelona's third in the 59th minute as Luis Enrique's side continued to dominate the match. Messi then completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot in the 65th minute before Luis Suarez(pictured celebrating with Messi) added the gloss with a fifth goal courtesy of a bicycle kick. Barca remain a point behind leaders Real Madrid, and they entertain Malaga tomorrow afternoon (Saturday).

TYTON THE TERRIFIC EIBAR 0

Elche boosted their Primera Division survival hopes after withstanding a second-half onslaught to win at 10-man Eibar last Monday night. Jonathas headed the only goal five minutes after the interval but thereafter it was Eibar on the attack, with Elche keeper Przemyslaw Tyton twice brilliantly denying Ander Capa. Federico Piovaccari was sent off with a little over 10 minutes remaining for Eibar, in a result that takes the Ilicitanos four points clear of the drop zone, but with an unfortunate next fixture at home to leaders Real Madrid on Sunday night.. Eibar's Javi Lara flashed a first-minute shot over the bar

ELCHE 1

but Elche quickly responded, Jonathas shooting over before Edu Albacar's free-kick was saved by home keeper Xabi Irureta. Eibar's Eneko Boveda missed the target but Tyton had to save long-range shots from Raul Navas and Borja Fernandez before half-time. Elche took the lead when Albacar swung in a free-kick from the right and Jonathas won the header and found the bottom corner of the net. Tyton had to be alert to prevent Eibar equalising within three minutes, tipping Capa's shot around the post and then blocking Javi Lara's effort from close range.

Capa sent a 25-yard shot over the bar and Dani Garcia headed Lara's corner wide before Eibar were reduced to 10 men, Piovaccari receiving a straight red card for a bad foul on full-back Albacar. Capa had another chance from inside the six-yard box, but again the Polish international Tyton stood firm. He got fulsome praise from his manager, Fran Escriba, afterwards saying that his performance was crucial in securing the victory, adding that confidence amongst the squad has been growing since the start of 2015. Next it’s that Sunday evening meeting with Real Madrid.

TORRY’S DERBY FLOP ORIHUELA CF 5

Torrevieja’s terrible February continued with a thrashing at Orihuela witnessed by 600 fans, with all the Torry supporters left scratching their heads as to where the next goal is going to come from, but now the shaky defence is also coming under the spotlight. Without Jorge (suspended) and with Ruben and Alexis both injured, the back four was strange with Brani occupying right back; Vicente and Edi (pictured closing in on Antonio) in central positions; and only Berna in his customary left back role. Positively, Obele led the line and he was fast, competitive and eager. But he had to do too much on his own, with Cristian struggling to re-find his form and no Rafa Gomez or Carrasco available to supply him with opportunities It just might have been different in the first quarter of an hour, as Obele cracked a flying header against the post and a Cesar free kick (pictured) was headed off the goal line, both times keeper Emilio well beaten. However, the defensive frailties of Torry were soon evident and Orihuela exploited these mercilessly. Once Orihuela made the breakthrough on 16 minutes with a cracking drive from captain Fleky from the edge of

CD TORREVIEJA 0

the box, then Torry were second best. Two more thunderbolts from Tonino and Pico served up a 3-0 interval advantage for Orihuela from which the visitors could not recover. When Ernesto and Micro were introduced, Orihuela were fielding four former Torry outfield players and they thoroughly enjoyed this conclusive victory over their local rivals. It was all one way traffic in the second half and Torry did well to keep the score down to five! They’ve now dumped down from second place to eleventh in the table since the middle of January and given how compact this group is, should they continue in this vein, it will soon become a relegation battle! Scoring has become a dim and distant lost art, as had solid defending, so it is not whimsical to suggest such a proposition between now and May 17th?. On the other hand, could the return of Jorge, Alexis, Rafa Gomez, and Ruben and herald a return to form and confidence? This question could well be answered this Sunday when 2nd placed Levante B visit the Vicente Garcia stadium for a 5.00pm kick off.

FUN IN THE SUN

RACING PLAYAS DE ORIHUELA 1 Montesinos were somewhat unlucky to come away from their Sunday morning encounter with just a point against a team just above them in the table. There was also the added novelty for Monte of playing this “away” fixture on at Torrevieja’s Sports complex, with both teams boosted by a bumper turnout of around 500 spectators who enjoyed the sunshine and the entertainment. Monte started well kicking into the sun, with the ever improving Carlos coming close to grabbing the first goal in the fifth minute, as he shot just over the bar. Chances came and went as Vaz was continually under the spotlight from the Orihuela defenders with a series of fouls. The Monte striker though came close with a header from a Fernando ball which produced a great save from the Orihuela keeper. At the other end, Monte just managed to scramble the ball away for a corner before half-time after a mix up with their keeper, Lopez. After a first half that saw Monte the better of the two sides, they got the second period of play off to a corking start as Macan produced a run down the whole length of the field only for the Orihuela keeper to produce another great save, whilst in turn Lopez off his line was grateful for Fernando producing an amazing clearance off the line to keep the scores level. Orihuela turned the screw and Lopez was giving the Monte fans a steady stream of coronaries as he boobed again in the 58th minute by deciding to meander out of his area, with the Orihuela forward lobbing over his head with the ball hitting the woodwork! On the hour mark, the Monte keeper then dropped the ball like a hot potato after a shot on goal, but there was nobody close enough to penalise

CD MONTESINOS 1

him for it. How the match has stayed goalless for so long was something of a mystery, and against the run of play, with 22 minutes remaining, Monte got a free kick which saw the ball kicking off the line no less than three times with the Orihuela keepers well and truly beaten! It looked though that Monte had snatched the winner with a quarter of an hour remaining as a throw out from Lopez found Fernando, who passed to Vaz, and then put through Carlos in a great move along the ground, as he beat Andres to put the visitors into the lead. But it wasn’t to be, as in the 86th minute, Lopez did his impression of a statue as not a muscle moved as an Orihuela free-kick found the back of the net to deprive them of all the points, that on the balance of the whole match, they deserved. Monte are back at home this Sunday afternoon when they entertain San Isidro.

WEEKEND RUGBY

In the latest round of Murcia territorial league rugby fixtures, ITV Orihuela Vega Baja lost their first division match, 20-6 at home to Albacete. In the second division, the Torrevieja Tigers won the local derby (pictured) against the San Javier Sharks by 15 points to 12 at the Nelson Mandela stadium. In the juvenile league, ITV Orihuela shaded a close encounter with Albacete, 24-22, and there was an easy win in the women’s league for San Javier as they bit through their away opponents Cartagena by 71 points to nil.

Where do you stand on Man United? Work in progress? Van Gaal steadily getting there? Double Dutch disaster after Moyes? Lofty Louis must go? Probably if you asked any ten football followers you’d get ten different answers. Watching United’s stuttering 3 – 1 win over Division One hopefuls Preston in the FA Cup was puzzling, as usual. The Red Devils are a paradox of a team, a mighty club right at the crossroads, confused as to which direction they are going in – and you have to say van Gaal looks as mystified as everyone else. So far £156m has been spent to

bring so-called superstars to Old Trafford, which has righted the ship, sort-of resultswise since the imbalance and demise of the anticipated messiah David Moyes. First the good news: United have moved from an unsatisfactory seventh last year up four places to third today - and if they stay there, they’ll be in the Champions

UNITED WE STAND? League next season. Quite simply, United have to be there in the top tier of European football, expectation-wise. It’s financiallyessential and in United’s DNA to be there – that was Matt Busby’s dream and legacy. 75,000 loyal fans turn up every week and expect it at the Theatre of Dreams, so used to success were they with 28 years of it under Alex Ferguson! I always say league tables don’t lie – so only four defeats in 25 games tell their own story. Leaders Chelsea have lost twice and nasty neighbours Man City three times, so that’s not bad in comparison.

United’ s goal statistics are about right, scored 43, way behind the big two but the defence have only conceded goals in line with first and second, so here van Gaal has done well – although goalkeeper David de Gea’s safe hands have weighed heavily towards that statistic. Now the bad news: this ‘team’ doesn’t look up to it: -

they aren’t one really, as van Gaal continues to tinker away with his line-up, and yet he still appears no further forward. If United want to compete with the best, the tip-top two, then big Louis must sort out the midfield and his cringingly-expensive floundering forward line. The only real new success looks to be Daley Blind, who always gives everything, pops up all over the field, scores goals and looks a team player. Second in United’s and third in the Prem’s list of all-time goalscorers, Wayne Rooney, looks out of place playing in midfield. The Reds’ captain should be using his guile and craft just behind the main strikers where he has always been at his most effective. After a short initial burst of success Angel di Maria looks a shadow of the mighty man who came last summer from Real Madrid - just what the

Argentinian’s role at United is remains confusing. It’s sad, but Robin van Persie looks to be coming to the end of a great career: Robin Reliant-as-was has still got it - in flashes - but they seem to be getting more sporadic as injuries are slowing him down: the grey hair tells its own story and time is inevitably marching on for the Dutch striker. Radamel Falcao? ‘What a waste of money!’ chanted the Preston crowd in Monday’s cup tie, and it certainly wasn’t down to the Columbian that United won the match. Falcao’s miserable return of only four goals from 19 games and the striker’s seemingly indifferent attitude to playing for one of the world’s great football clubs reveals a master mercenary at work - if you can call it work, running round a field for a few hours a week kicking a ball for £265,000

per week: obscene. The man has only actually played a full 90 minutes four times in five months at Old Trafford. No shots against Preston, nor against Burnley last time out in the Prem, Falcao is easily marked out of the game, even by a Division One defence. After missing the World Cup through injury, Falcao looks a shadow of the man who has terrorised defences in France, Portugal and Spain. Even when he scores there’s no delighted fireworks, indeed all of United’s muted goal celebrations these days border on the ‘Thank God!’ reaction rather than the traditionally wild and ecstatic. Did you see West Brom’s Brown Ideye’s somersaults last

Everton. Apparently Marouane Fellaini was not wanted at all initially by van Gaal, and but for injury would have left Old Trafford early in the season. But it didn’t happen and now the big, hairy, feisty forward has become LVG’s plan B – which is being put into practice more and more until Fellaini is becoming a regular in United’s starting line-up. Surely young James Wilson deserves his chance to prove that United’s famous youth policy still works, and if played with Rooney upfront, that looks a better bet than toothless Falcao and clapped-out van Persie. Apparently the endof-season option price to buy the Columbian is £43.5m.

Saturday against West Ham? Sheer delight, and great for the fans too. Don’t United’s deserve better? One unexpected reason why United are still up there in third and still in the FA Cup is a wild-looking Belgian, David Moyes’ legacy from

Surely even United and van Gaal aren’t that stupid? So the £64m and a lot more questions: will United’s management stand by van Gaal as manager for next season - or will it soon be Lofty Louis’ last stand? Thirteen games to go – unlucky for some?

CONTROLLED EFFORT

Torrevieja’s Muncipal Pool hosted regional swimmers from 14 clubs who took part in last weekend’s fourth time control event of the season. Many of Torrevieja’s Club Natacion females found themselves competing against each other, like in the 400m Freestyle event (pictured) with Paula Garcia, Zoe Connolly and Piroska Rideg all up against each other, with Zoe being victorious. Zoe and Paula, along with Vicky Pigneur and Yuriy Lymar in a depleted male team, all notched up new Autonomico qualifying times for the Winter Regional Championships in Castellon at the start of March.

‘Parking the bus’ took on a literal meaning on Tuesday evening as the Chelsea coach somehow got wedged in a gangway at Paris StGermain’s ground prior to the Champions League kick off. On the field, it took the Blues’ defence to show the attack how to do it, with Branislav Ivanovic’s header superbly putting the Blues ahead, courtesy of John Terry and Gary Cahill. But Edinson Calvani equalised for PSG in the second half, and then goalie Thibaut Courtois played a blinder to keep Chelsea in it and set up a belting second leg at Stamford Bridge next week. In the meantime here’s your algebra homework: If DL = 50, and DG = 32 + CF = 33, did PSG or CFC get the best value? See answer at bottom. Do they know what a ‘Gilet’ is in Birmingham? Sounds like an old Black Country farming implement but Brum Gents’ outfitters should stock up on this sartoriallysleeveless outdoor number for trendy touchliners, currently favoured by new Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood. If the ex-Spurs star gets it right, then the biggest club in England’s second city could be back in the big time. What an opportunity, to put the Villains back up where Martin O’Neill left off, i.e. a top six team, but where noone has succeeded since the Irishman departed. Despite some formidable talent at the club, Villa are now in the Dreaded Drop Department, with awful statistics. But now new life begins again – in a Midlands derby at home to Stoke on Saturday. The Potters will be smarting from their exit of the FA Cup at the hands of

John McGregor reports

Championship side Blackburn, who now visit Anfield to play Liverpool in the sixth round. There’s no big Villa opposition until April, so temperamental Tim will have a good opportunity to bed himself in before the big tests start: his priority right now must be to get out of the DDD ASAP. Oh and handily, Villa are still in the Cup after putting away pit-of-the-Prem Leicester. How long has Nigel Pearson got left? Old Leicester boy Gary Lineker let out details of a farcical family fall-out where Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, the chairman and billionaire Thai owner of the club, sacked Pearson after Villa’s cup win. Then his son Aiyawatt, the vice-chairman, is understood to have persuaded his father to undo Pearson’s sacking. Makes the Forest farce up the road look nothing, are the Midlands mafiosas missing the plot? Tim Sherwood’s trip up to the West Midlands all came a bit sudden after the Queerly Pratting Round fiasco at Loftus Road, where losing-the-plot owner Tony Fernandes failed to stun the media as promised with a fantastic new manager. In the end he merely meekly meted out the management mantle to temporary boss Chris Ramsey. Now on Saturday, the Hoops have a sixpointer away at unlucky Hull. The Rangers away hoodoo has been broken though, ‘Gers had their first away win this season last time out at suffering Sunderland. After the Black Cats’ FA Cup defeat by giant-killing specialists Bradford City, it’s not the bantams but the buzzards are circling the Stadium of Light. 4,000 angry longsuffering Sunderland supporters at Valley Parade vented their feelings against manager Gus Poyet. Tomorrow it’s to The Hawthorns to take on rejuvenated West Brom in another massive six-pointer. The Pulis Baggies are jubilant after putting four past West Brom to move into the

sixth round where they play - wait for it – Aston Villa – astonishing! West Ham? Hmm…. just when it looked like everything was coming right again, with Big Andy Carroll amongst the goals and looking good, the big Geordie gets another serious injury which will keep him out til next season. That seems to have quickly had a demoralising on the team with poor results seeing the Hammers beginning to slide down to mid-table obscurity. It’s really sad for Carroll, manager big Sam Allardyce and West Ham. But supporters are very fickle people, and after the 4 – 0 disaster at the Hawthorns the Hammers’ team boss got the ‘**** off, Sam’ chants from some of the 6,500 travelling supporters on the terraces. Joint owner David Sullivan also got similar dog’s abuse in the car pack from his own ungrateful supporters. As a nosey neutral, I think both Sam and the West Ham management have done a great job in the heat of the Prem. Delusions of grandeur, them ‘ammers fans, they don’t deserve to be ‘entertained’ at the Olympic Stadium. Turkish delight? Domestic drama? It’s a crucial 10 days for Liverpool, wack. Last night home to Besiktas in the Europa League, Sunday away to fourth-placed Southampton, next Thursday Euro return against Besiktas in Turkey, then home to reigning Prem champions Man City. Good Reds news - Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge are both back from injury, seriously key players at Anfield. *Algebra answer: Chelsea Football Club got the best deal – they sold David Luiz to Paris Saint-Germain for £50m, but paid out £32m for Diego Costa, and £33m for Cesc Fabregas - effectively £15m for two world class players.
