ROSIE KILLED B RI T OAP CO N F E S SES TO G UA R D I A

ALEX TRELINSKI

A

75 year old British pensioner has been arrested in San Miguel de Salinas on suspicion of killing his companion who he reported missing back in September, after dumping her body onto a tip close to a petrol station by the Zoco market, Algorfa. Social network sites had been full of appeals over the whereabouts of 76 year old Rosie Broadwell since she vanished over six months ago after supposedly being given a lift to a cashpoint in Quesada. The Guardia Civil in San Miguel were told about her disappearance by her partner, Charlie Bevill-Warcup on Monday September 15th 2014, and events took a dramatic turn at the start of this week when Bevill-Warcup was arrested in San Miguel and confessed to killing her. Bevill-Warcup had been seeing Rosie for a few months and both kept their own homes, though she lived with him last September as her house was being decorated. The Guardia Civil in Almoradi say he admitted on Monday to repeatedly hitting the Hull-born mother of two with a walking stick after an argument, fuelled by alcohol. He then put her body into the boot of his car in the early hours of the morning before taking it to the tip in the Algorfa area. He told officers where the body was but refused to accompany them to the site on Tuesday morning. It was discovered on waste land off the CV940 close to the exit for the AP7 motorway and was found wrapped in plastic and was in a severe state of decomposition. The Guardia had Bevill-Warcup

in their sights straight away after he reported her missing back in September. Neighbours had told authorities that they had heard screams from his San Miguel home the night before Rosie’s disappearance had been reported, and the Guardia officers didn’t buy into his report that she had vanished after claimed to have taken her to an ATM in Quesada. According to the El Mundo newspaper, Guardia sources reported BevillWacrup’s behaviour and demeanour to be “somewhat suspicious”, and their investigations confirmed that Rosie had never used the ATM machine. Rosie Broadwell was a wellknown figure in and around Quesada. For many years she was seen walking her two Shih Tzu dogs, Mollie and Benji, and when they passed away, Rosie bought a white Bichon/Maltese Terrier called Alfie. Her daughter, Cheryl Webster, said that the news “had come as a terrible shock”. “I've been travelling out to Spain every six weeks since my mum disappeared. I wasn't expecting this on this visit. I got a call from the police to say that a man had been arrested and another call to say my mum's body had been found. I've never liked him (Bevill-Warcup).” The Valencia Supreme Court confirmed in a statement that they were looking into a possible murder charge, whilst the accused was refused bail after he appeared at Torrevieja’s Violence against Women court.

THANK YOU! A campaign spearheaded by the Help at Home Costa Blanca charity and supported by The Courier has saved a mother and her nine year old son from losing their home. After a fire at her apartment which spread to neighbouring properties, Alicia Garcia, of Los Altos, Torrevieja was sued by an insurance company for over four thousand euros which she, as a single mother, could not pay. She faced the prospect of being evicted from her home which would have been put on the market as a distressed sale, and her son Angel could have been placed in care. But after three months of special fund-raising the full amount was raised and paid over to the insurance company, with the court case against Alicia now being closed after it was scheduled for last Monday. "I am so grateful for the charity in helping me and for all the people who gave so generously in the events which were put on to benefit me. Thank you all so very much," said Alicia (pictured with Angel and the HAH team outside their Playa Flamenca shop). The appeal was wrapped up at a finale fun day at the Emerald Isle, La

Florida last week, when just under 700 euros was raised. Donations during the appeal included 400 euros from the OP Group in La Marina; 400 euros from a collection at the ICA church, Torrevieja; and 700 euros from a Torrevieja charity. Residents at the La Concha urbanisation social club at La Florida donated 500 euros from their charity fund, whilst volunteer fundraiser Kathleen Vah picked up an outstanding sum of just over one thousand euros from local entertainers. Any money left over from the appeal will now go to buy more mobility equipment to hire out to Help at Home clients. The charity has just agreed to take over the lease of an adjoining shop and over the next few weeks will be moving next door. President Eileen Mayes said: "The new premises are double the size of our existing shop and will give us far more room to display items for sale. We hope to be able to have a drop-in centre providing refreshments, and there will be a store area for mobility equipment. Nine new people volunteered their services at our recent open day, but we can always do with more help in expanding our services”.

A FISHY TALE FLAT FIRE SHOCK

Six people, including a number of Santa Polabased fishermen, were arrested after smuggling in over 1,500 kilos of hashish into the fishing port. The drugs stash, worth around two and a half million euros, was loaded off a boat in Santa Pola and then transferred to a van, which was intercepted by authorities on the A70 Alicante by-pass at El Campello. The driver was arrested by the Guardia Civil, whilst four others were apprehended in Santa Pola, and a sixth man on a boat which had broken down at sea several miles off the coast at Torrevieja. Authorities say that the drugs were being shipped in from Morocco and then transferred at sea to small trawlers to fool the police into believing that nothing more than fish was being transported into Spain. All the arrested men, with the exception of one Gambian national, were Spanish.

50 people were evacuated from a Torrevieja apartment block in the early hours of last Sunday morning as fire raged through the building on Calle Joven Purain in the Neuva Torrevieja area of the city. A pet cat perished in the blaze which appeared to start in the dining room of a ground-floor flat (pictured) at 2.30am, with eight people, including two children, rushed to Torrevieja Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. The most serious injury was to a 36 year old woman from the flat where the fire started and she was taken to Alicante General Hospital with facial burns, as well as injuries to her arms and legs.

ARTICHOKE HEAVEN

BEACH CLEAN

BUTANO BOOST

Almoradi celebrated the artichoke in the third annual national artichoke festival based around the Plaza de la Constitucion last weekend. The Vega Baja region grows over fifteen hundred hectares of artichokes, making it one of the key growing regions for the vegetable in Spain, and there was plenty to see and taste as local and national chefs produced varied dishes featuring the trusty artichoke.

Orihuela Costa’s beaches are getting a tidy up ahead of the Easter season with sand-levelling and new wooden walkways being installed at places like Playa Flamenca, Cala Mosca, Cala Capitán, La Caleta, Cala Cerrada and Punta Prima. New piping has also been installed at various footshowers.

Gas bottle prices have gone down for the first time in many years, by just under ten percent. A typical 12.5-kilo butane bottle, used for cookers, heaters or barbecues in homes that are not on mains gas has just gone down to €15.80 and will remain at this price until the end of April. It is likely the price will go down again in May and June, but the cost will still be more than double the eight euros a bottle that was paid back in 2006.

PARTY WEEDED OUT GAMES

The opposition Partido Popular in Los Montesinos is in turmoil with just over two months to go before the May local elections, with a mayoral candidate imposed on the PP in the town, who the local officials have in turn rejected, as well as handing an ultimatum to their regional bosses. Pedro Simón, who is related to the current PSOE Mayor, José Butron Sánchez, and has not served before on the Montesinos authority, has dramatically replaced the expected Mayoral candidate, Maria Paredes(pictured), who stood against Butron in 2011. The five-strong PP electoral committee in Montesinos have resigned “en bloc” in protest at the imposition of Simón, and at the time of going to print, had issued an ultimatum to the PP hierarchy to reverse the decision within 24 hours or face a major schism. The Informacion newspaper says that Paredes was offered second place on the PP list, and met with party officials on Tuesday afternoon, but there has been no public comment from her. The Courier understands that Paredes is in the process of formulating a response. The PP has had the Town Hall in its sights for the first realistic chance to take over since José Butron Sánchez became the municipality’s first mayor in the early nineties. The socialist leader has been embroiled in a series of controversies, including a court case that started a few weeks ago involving alleged land deals. A split in the PP ranks though is viewed by observers as giving the PSOE a good chance of holding onto control of the Montesinos Town Hall.

BACK FOR NOW

Two men aged 32 and 28, have been arrested by the National Police for converting a Rojales warehouse into an indoor marijuana plantation. 750 plants were seized by the officers, along with all the associated paraphernalia for growing the banned substance, including lights and heaters. The operation was a sophisticated one with air filters being used to reduce the chance of drug aromas wafting around outside the building.

Oriheula Mayor, Monserrate Guillen, is back at work after suffering a near-fatal heart attack last summer. But his return to the helm of the council is only temporary as the Green Party councillor is standing down at May’s elections after 12 years on the authority. Guillen’s return was delayed on numerous occasions due to medical advice, but he said that his dream to have an Orihuela council free of corruption had been fulfilled.

The Supreme Court has confirmed a 17 year jail sentence handed out to a former Rugby Union player, Phil Jones, from Hereford who flew over to Algorfa in May 2009 and killed a tenant of his for not paying his rent. Jones took the dead body of 33 year old Domingo Torresgrosa and dumped it on the Sierra Escalona near Pilar de la Horadada.

Jones was extradited to Spain to face charges back in 2010, and was well-known in Herefordshire farming circles and played as a forward for Hereford Rugby Club. He served a year long UK jail term for handling stolen equipment and owning ammunition and firearms without a certificate.

TIME CALLED

Late night revellers have a new 3.00am curfew in the Los Palacios area of Formentera after complaints from local residents. New plans have been introduced that will see bars and clubs having to be properly licensed and the only nightclub in the area unable to be open until dawn.

SWITCHING ON

LED street lighting is to be introduced across the San Miguel de Salinas area to save money and to be more environmentally friendly. The council have signed a deal with the Elecnor company for a pilot scheme on the La Rufete urbanisation to see what kind of savings can be made with different types of lighting.

HAPPY FLIPPER

PILAR’S EASTER

Pilar de la Horadada is moving full swing towards Easter with nine restaurants offering the chance to sample traditional fare using local products under the title of “Flavours of Lent”. It’s the fifth year that the promotion has run with threecourse menus plus drinks and coffee on offer for 20 euros until April 5th. Meanwhile there’s a chance to see a special display at the Pilar tourist office celebrating the annual Semana Santa parade. Local artist, Jerónimo Blanco, has put together the miniature display, which was first seen by tourism councillor, Eva Martinez.

QUARRY MAKEOVER A dolphin was rescued in the water after being spotted aground in the La Manga area on Monday. A resident from the Dos Mares urbanisation called the authorities saying that the five foot long dolphin was on a beach, and officers from the environmental Seprona branch of the Guardia Civil went to the scene. They and members of the El Valle Wildlife rescue team, got it back into wetter conditions for it to continue its journey.

Spain's biggest supermarket, Mercadona, showed a slight drop in sales last year, as it tried to compete with rivals such as Dia, but profits rose by five percent. The Valencia-region based store says though that it expects sales to go up this year by around two percent and for a one percent rise in profits. "Consumption is picking up. Tourism is helping,” said Mercadona chairman, Juan Roig.

RETURN OF THE KILLERS

DRUG GANG NABBED

A joint operation between the French and Spanish police has seen the arrest of 12 people, including seven in the Murcia region, for shipping hashish into Spain, and then onwards around the continent. A Los Alcazares house was used for stockpiling some of the drugs which would have come in from southern Spain, with the Guardia Civil monitoring the movements of the crooks in the Murcia region. Seven gang members were hauled up before a San Javier judge after officers stopped a van that had some 700 kilos of hashish in it, along with weapons, cash, and mobile phones.

Processionary caterpillars that can kill pets and are very harmful to small children, have become a political issue in Rojales ahead of May’s local elections, with the opposition Partido Popular slamming the ruling Socialist council for not doing enough to combat the problem. PP spokesman, Alberto Ros, says that not enough preventative measures have been taken to stop the spread of the caterpillar, with many complaints being sent to the Rojales Town Hall. In neighbouring Dolores, the PP recently accused the current administration there of not doing enough to stop the spread of the caterpillar in certain parts of the municipality, which includes an area next to the mortuary. Warmer weather has seen the spread of the processionary caterpillar across Spain in their annual appearance. They nest in pine trees only and are not dangerous to human health, but can cause very unpleasant skin irritations with stinging, itching and redness which need to be treated as a priority by medical staff. If dogs or cats come into contact with processionary caterpillars, they should be taken to the vet immediately, attending an emergency clinic if they are affected out of hours, since any delay can be fatal. The caterpillars themselves stay on the trees, but their spit - which can be easily seen as a large lump of foam on the pine branches and needles - is what causes skin problems in people and serious health issues in animals.

Five thousand pine trees are to be planted to give a new look to the San Isidro quarry, near Cox, as part of the plans to turn the area into a park. The trees have been donated by the Environment Ministry for the project which will also include extensive landscaping and a shaded plaza area which will be used to commemorate the feast day of San Isidro. Fencing will be put up to ensure the safety of visitors, and ideas for phase two of the project include a nature visitor centre. Olive and other types of trees will also be planted in the future to help encourage more birds and wildlife to settle in the area. The project was inspected by Cox Mayor, Carmelo Rives, and Regional Environment Director, Javier Sogorb.

DRIVERS BEWARE

Alicante City is the number one blackspot in Spain for motorists, says a survey from the European Automobile Association(AEA). The study concludes that drivers around the city are more likely to lose points on their driving license there than in any other part of Spain. The AEA claim that Alicante City gets eight points per 100 hundred drivers, with León and San Sebastián coming second and third.

FLYING HIGH

More than half a million passengers used Alicante-Elche airport last month, a rise of 2.3 per cent on the same period last year. 508 thousand travellers came through the facilities at El Altet, with a large portion of the rise down to increased domestic journeys.

EYES OF THE BEHOLDER Pilar de la Horadada has a new sculpture which was unveiled last Sunday to celebrate International Women’s Day. The Mayor, José Fidel Ros, performed the special ceremony on Avenida Camilo José Cela to reveal the work by local artist Manu Moya. It’s essentially a piece of topiary on an iron frame designed by Moya which commemorates the traditions of local women over the years.

ON YOUR BIKE

A new six kilometre cycle path is being built on the Orihuela Costa, with the first phase of the project set to link up Cabo Roig, La Zenia, and Campoamor. The work is being done by 24 members of the Employment Workshop costing around 300 thousand euros, with future plans looking to expand cycle links further inland.

MAMMA MIA

A killer disease that has already wiped out a million olive trees in Italy could be on its way to Spain. The Xylella fastidiosa bacterium has decimated around 570,000 acres of olive groves in Italy’s southern region of Puglia since it was first detected in 2013. Spain produces around half of the world’s olive oil, and last summer’s drought meant that production was down by around one million tonnes to 700,000 tonnes. Combined with the diseased crops in Italy, the price of the golden liquid could soar across Europe.

BARKING MAD A Spanish motorist has been fined 200 euros for driving too close to a dog in the town of Meaño in Pontevedra in January. The Highway Code says that at least one and a half metres must be the minimum distance if overtaking a dog in the road, and Fernando Miniño failed to observe the minimum required when passing the pooch. Miniño said he could not remember any dog, and when the letter arrived from the DGT he thought the fine was for his car which is over ten years old.

SAVE THE HEDGEHOG!

I've told my grandchildren so many times never to run up and down my garden path without first checking for obstacles which could cause a mishap. But do the kids listen? Indeed, do any adults listen when I tell them anything? But I digress. Indeed, I have wandered so far offtopic that I cannot even remember what I was talking to you about. Of course, when I use the word 'talking', I'm not really saying anything. I am actually writing these words. And that's not quite correct either for I am neither talking nor writing. I am typing. I was tempted to add to that last statement the phrase 'as we speak' but that would only further complicate matters. Anyway, the point I am trying to make is that the English language can be most peculiar. For example, why is 'into' one word but 'up to' is two words? And why isn't the word 'doing' pronounced 'doyng'? Also why do we write down but type up? And just to add to the confusion, what the heck does the phrase 'I was beside myself' mean? No one can answer that last query because there's nobody else here at the moment. . er . . . besides myself. Mrs S has gone off with her best friend Phyllis to play bingo. It's just me here trying to write a Courier column. So what was I informing

you of when I started this article? Oh, yes, my grand-

But she hadn't finished with me yet. 'I just hope the

children running up and down my garden path without first checking that there is nothing around which could cause a mishap. And, oh boy, was there nearly a mishap of the major variety the other day. I was reversing down the aforementioned path when a fortuitous glance behind me revealed that my sixyear-old grandson was not only loitering there but was directly in MY path and only inches away to boot. Fortunately (for him), despite my advancing years, my reflexes are still razor-sharp. I managed to slam on the anchors and

my momentum caused me to swerve sideways. My wheels clipped something (probably a dozing hedgehog) and I ricocheted into next door's garden gnome. The next situation of which I was aware was that I was lying supine on the grass with my arms and legs sticking up into the air. At which point Mrs S returned from bingo. Standing over me, she asked: 'Are you sunbathing? It is only March, you know. And it is also most irresponsible when you are supposed to be looking after our grandchild.'

response. 'You don't need either,' Mrs S assured me. 'I know,' I agreed. 'But the hedgehog might.' Mrs S sighed. 'All I asked of you while I was out was to bring our newly-emptied wheelie bin back down the path. And you couldn't even do that without becoming involved in a drama of your own making. It's fortunate that it was just the bin and not the car you were faffing about with.' I struggled to my feet and limped away, all physical discomfort ignored as I attempted to escape Mrs S's scalding tone.

binmen are still in the street,' she yattered on. 'I'll pay them to chuck you into the cart and dump you on the municipal tip in Anchorage, Alaska.' 'Anchorage? Why Anchorage?' asked a puzzled passer-by who had stopped to see what all the mayhem was about. 'Don't concern yourself, mister,' I said. 'Mrs S has just finished her library book which is set in Alaska. If she'd been reading Gone With the Wind for the umpteenth time, she would have said the municipal tip in Atlanta, Georgia.' I dusted myself down and

waited for Mrs S to say: 'And that's another thing . . .' I didn't have long to wait. 'And that's another thing. How come our wheelie bin is lying on its side in next door's garden?' 'Isn't it obvious?' I cried as my patience snapped. 'The bin was attempting to leave home because you are driving the poor thing crazy. It begged our neighbour's garden gnome to push it into the next street but somehow the bin's wheels became tangled with the elf's fishing rod.' Mrs S glared at me as if aiming to set a new world record for glaring. 'Have you quite finished with the sarcasm?' she hissed. I thought for a moment. 'Probably,' I shrugged. 'I have fully vented my spleen and now wish to partake of a nice cup of tea because I'm in shock.' My grandson, who had been observing in silence as the drama played out, said: 'Nana, I want you to know that all this has nothing to do with me. I'm a good boy, I am.' Mrs S said: 'Please go inside now and scrub your hands, face and knees.' The child looked puzzled. 'But, Nana, I haven't been playing in dirt.' Mrs S said: 'I wasn't talking to you, dearest one. I was addressing your very naughty grandfather.' 'And all these years I thought that Anchorage was in Canada,' commented the passer-by as he resumed his passing-by.

Ryanair will be the first airline to use the so-called ‘ghost airport’ at Castellon in the northern part of the Valencian region. The budget airline will operate flights between Castellon to Stansted and Bristol from September 15th. The airport was built at a cost of around 200 million euros and declared open four years ago, even though no airlines were signed on as tenants and it had not received government approval to operate.

IN THE DOGHOUSE

A Granada couple’s barking dogs have landed them with a 21 month stretch behind bars after complaints from one of their neighbours over a period of five years. Inmaculada Rodríguez and husband Nicolás García have also been ordered to pay three thousand euros in damages. "I had terrible tachycardia (rapid heart rate)," said the accuser, who wished to only be identified as J.C.M. "Imagine the anxiety of having an exam and having to study and not being able to because dogs are bothering you." The couple has continued to challenge the neighbours' complaints, going so far as to hire a private investigator to record the house for days to prove that their dogs were not barking. They even had a vet evaluate the dogs and write a letter declaring that labrador retrievers Nala and Greta were "psychologically stable and loving dogs that can live well with children, do not vocalize and do not urinate, defecate or behave abnormally." A police report taken in 2012 after various neighbors complained noted that "you could not hear animals... they did not bark". The couple have since moved house, taking 13-yearold yellow labrador Nala and her seven year old daughter Greta, 7, with them and insist they have had no complaints from their new neighbours but their former neighbours are pursuing them. Prosecutors are now considering whether to raise the prison sentence to seven years and four months for each person for crimes against the environment. The accuser has also challenged the sentence, calling for more damages to be paid, though adding that there was no interest in seeing the couple jailed. A provincial court is set to review the local court's decision in the coming weeks.

Spain has outstripped France and Italy to become the world’s biggest wine exporter, exporting 22.8m hectolitres in 2014, a 22 percent rise on the previous year. However, because much of it was bulk sales with small margins, the Spanish wine industry’s profits were down two point two percent. France is now the biggest buyer of Spanish wines, importing and bottling – often as French wine – 5.8m hectolitres in 2014, some 40 percent more than the previous year. A hectolitre is equivalent of 133.3 bottles.

HOME GRABS RISE

Nearly 35,000 homes were foreclosed in Spain last year, according to official figures. It works out as 95 properties a day as families struggled to make mortgage payments despite a rebound in the economy. The number of foreclosures on main residences increased by seven point four percent over the previous year to 34,680, the National Statistics Institute said. The total number of foreclosures, including holiday homes, offices and farms, rose by nine point three percent to 119,442 last year.

More than one in 10 drivers and passengers do not wear a seatbelt, and almost a quarter of all fatal accident victims did not have theirs on at the time of their death, says the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT). Figures released this week show that 12 percent of people travelling in cars, lorries, vans and other four-wheeled vehicles do not bother to belt up - which means they are guaranteed not to survive if they suffered a head-on crash at 80 kilometres per hour or more.

EX-KING RULES

The Supreme Court has dismissed a paternity suit against the former King, Juan Carlos by a Belgian woman claiming to be his daughter. Judges voted to uphold an appeal by Juan Carlos against the suit brought by Ingrid Sartiau, a housewife who claims he fathered her in the mid-1960s before he became king. In January the court said it would take on the suit lodged by Sartiau after examining documents offered as proof of a relationship between her mother and Juan Carlos. But the former monarchy appealed against the decision for it to be heard.

TERROR ARREST

WATCH IT LADIES

A Moroccan woman recruiting new members for the terrorist Islamic State group was arrested at Barcelona Airport last weekend. Samira Yerou, was sent packing to Spain by Turkish authorities after they caught her trying to illegally enter Syria. Spain had issued an international arrest warrant for the woman who was with her three-year-old son when trying to get into Syria. The boy's father filed a complaint when Yerou and the child disappeared from Rubi, near Barcelona, in December. The child has now been reunited with his father.

LYNX IS BACK

The critically endangered Iberian lynx has returned to the Madrid region for the first time in decades. It's more than 40 years since the species has set foot in the region, but now one has been tracked near a town just 50km south of the capital. The male lynx, called Kentaro, was born in captivity and released along with seven others in Toledo in late 2014. Since then he's been quite the adventurer, travelling about 100km and crossing several motorways. Kentaro wears a GPS collar which allows conservationists to track his whereabouts.

HOLA TSB! TSB has confirmed it has received a ÂŁ1.7bn takeover approach from Spanish bank Sabadell. The approach to the UK bank comes less than a year after it rejoined the stock market after Lloyds Banking Group sold off 50% of the business. TSB said its board was willing to recommend Sabadell's 340p-a-share offer. It said that Sabadell could support and accelerate its "retail growth strategy".

DEM BONES

Researchers working to unearth the remains of Don Quixote author Miguel de Cervantes think they have finally found his skeleton. Scientists who have been searching the church of the Convent of the Barefoot Trinitarians in Madrid for months said that they had found a skeleton of a man and woman that might belong to Cervantes and his wife, Catalina de Salazar. The bounds were found the bones in a niche of a crypt in the church with the initials 'MC'.

Alicante City has issued guidelines for women walking in the Semana Santa (Holy Week) parade, banning short skirts, cleavages and "tight-fitting" clothes. Around 1,500 women take part in the Alicante parade as "damas de mantilla" (mantilla women), wearing the traditional mantilla - a lace shawl worn over the head and shoulders. Organisers say that women are not allowed to wear skirts above the knee or to show cleavage and the colour red is banned. Fishnet tights are out and they should not even consider trying out a daring make-up look. Other new rules include the banning of tight-fitting dresses and long gloves as well as specifying exactly how high women should wear their hair. No guidelines appear to have been issued for men.

Poems to make you laugh and smile won't bring us any fame, But for 'Age Concern' the charity - we hope it brings acclaim! They really do amazing work - it's such a worthy cause, For the elderly, frail and vulnerable - they open many doors. Your support to buy a copy would be so very nice So can you help us swell their funds – five

euros will suffice!” This bit of prose comes from June Brady from the Torrevieja-based Velvetones Harmony Chorus, as part of a special collection to raise money for Age Concern, Costa Blanca South, who are desperately after a brand new minibus. Copies of the entertaining booklet can be bought from Age Concern at their charity shops in Los Montesinos and Torrevieja(near the bus station) as well as from their headquarters in the La Siesta area of Torrevieja. If you are struggling to get hold of one, then you can call June on 965 327 446.

NEED A GROWING INVESTMENT INCOME? THIS FUND MIGHT DO THE JOB ! With banks offering consistently low or zero interest rates on savings accounts and even a modest rise in the cost of living, many investors approaching (or in) retirement may have real concerns that their pension income alone will simply not be enough to sustain the rest of their years, especially if interest rates stay low for much longer. Therefore, investors need to look further afield than just their savings account to generate enough income to see them through their twilight years. The answer may lie in the classic investment that probably all investors should buy and hold, a fund from the so-called UK equity income sector. What's the AES International fund of choice for this job?

Mark Harrison Partner For investors who are prepared to take some risk beyond a AES International mere bank account, the Jupiter Income fund could be an

excellent choice of investment. The fund invests primarily in UK equities and most importantly aims to produce a high income that increases at least in line with inflation. With retirement lasting maybe 30 years, this type of investment, which aims to generate a sustainable income throughout retirement, is exactly the sort that investors should look to include as part of their diversified investment portfolio. The fund manager, Ben Whitmore, took over the fund in 2013 and has a good track record at his previous fund, the Jupiter Special

Situations fund, which he steered through one of the most difficult times in stock market history. The fund also has relatively low historic volatility, which will be important, at least psychologically, for retirees to be able to sleep at night. Going back to inflation, in the 1970s, it was easy to see the effects of double-digit inflation. Everyone was talking about it and you could see its effects when you went to do your weekly shopping. Today though, inflation is nearly not at nearly such damaging levels. However, if you do lifetime cash flow modelling and project forward 30 years at even 3% inflation, the effects on your income will be dramatic. So, any investment that can provide an income and also grow in value is worthy of consideration by our clients. The Jupiter Income fund ranks highly when it comes to historic long term track records: it has an exceptional track record of delivering income and growth to investors. So whilst past performance is of course no guide to the future and this fund manager is still relatively new in the job, the fund successfully makes it onto the AES International investment platform because of its long term record and the fund management house's team-based investment approach. WHY DOG SHOWS STINK

I have never been a fan of Crufts, or any other dog show for that matter. Many years ago, when I worked in the press trade in the UK, I was asked to visit the event one year. I saw for myself a bunch of egotistical people, all trying to be better than each other, so that their ego could be inflated even more. I have always said, if you could ask a dog what life would they prefer, a life where they are a show dog and have to constantly look in pristine condition, or a life where they can just be a dog and enjoy running and rolling around in a field, it would always be the latter. There have been numerous undercover operations that have blown the lid on the ridiculous show world for dogs and how Crufts still gets any type of backing and sponsorship is beyond me. Well, I do know the answer:It all comes down to what most things come down to and that is money! Jagger, the Irish Setter(pictured) who appeared at Crufts this year was poisoned and died shortly afterwards. In anoth-

er incident, one of the competitors was seen picking up her dog by the throat and tail, whilst a Border Collie was abused in the car park by his owner. This list of shame just goes on and on and it will be the s a m e next year, as everyone fights for that pathetic winners rosette. Throughout my career, working with dogs, I have come across many people in the show world of dogs and each time I always remember walking away thinking that they were a little strange. It’s as if they suffer from insecurity problems, so they have to try and find

acceptance in winning a stupid competition. Watching humans prance around a ring, with their poor dogs at their side, is something I always think looks strange. Then there are the judges. Well the less I say about them the better, but again most of them do not look like the full ticket. The whole system stinks

and as I mentioned, it always boils down to money. All of the dogs must not be speyed or neutered and the money these people get from selling puppies is astronomical. That then means that there is a massive market for breed dogs around the world, while the mixed breed dogs are left to die in rescue centres, or

killing centres worldwide. Take for arguments sake the German Shepherd d o g , which just happens to be a passion of mine. The reason why they suffer so badly from hip dysplasia is because of the s h o w w o r l d . Judges wanted the breed to have a more slanted look, so breeders did this for the sake of having a champion German Shepherd, when in fact what they really did was deform the breed. Look at a photo of a German Shepherd from around sixty years ago and compare that to a photo of one now. They look totally

different. The one from many years ago has a straight back, rather than slanted. Many German Shepherds in their later years, end up on wheelchair support systems, because their rear legs have stopped functioning. There are many breeds as well that have suffered huge health problems because of the show world. I for one, certainly know who's back I would like to slant, after all of this! www.thedogyouneed.co m is a registered charity, where we rehabilitate the most severely abused animals. LEFTIE LOONS COULD RULE

A perfect storm is developing over the UK´s May election, spelling total disaster for the country. Why do I say that? For several reasons. Firstly, in Scotland, there is a huge collapse of support for Labour as Scots increase their love affair with the Scottish Nationalist Party. If that continues unchecked there will be a large rump of Scottish Nationalist MPs in Westminster after May. If that wasn´t bad enough, the Greens have announced that any MPs they may get elected will join forces with the SNP. Bear in mind that both the SNP and the Greens are way to the left in politics. At present both Conservatives and Labour are neck and neck, but because of the peculiarities of the voting system and seat allocation it is likely that even if Labour get fewer votes nationally they will gain more seats. We could end up with Labour forming the next government backed up by lefty SNP and Green wierdos...and heaven help the country. Given the SNP declaration that they are fully prepared to stick their noses into England-only matters, we have a situation where the entire Union of Great Britain could be put at risk. Bear in mind that the SNP agenda is to get a better deal (i.e. more concessions) for Scotland, at England´s expense. I am now convinced that the far better result of the Scottish referendum would have been for the Scots to have got their independence - particularly after the North Sea oil price fell through the floor just weeks after the election. Now, it seems, we have the very real prospect of Scotland ruling England and the rest of the UK and lurching hard to the left as well. It´s no wonder that British

businesses are getting a very severe case of the jitters and we´re seeing falls in the share price, particularly of companies which Labour have singled out for harsh treatment, all in the attempt to woo voters. The sorry mess has now prompted a former Tory chairman and minister, Lord Kenneth Baker, to suggest that a Conservative/Labour alliance may be preferable than the SNP holding the balance of power. According to the latest opinion polls, UKIP are now getting about 15% of the voters' support, and at that point would only achieve a handful of seats, although they could come second in more than 100 constituencies. An increase in support of just a few percentage points would start to make a real difference. It´s sad that although the majority of voters would like to see a change to the two party system in the UK, insufficient numbers have the courage to go to the polls and do something about it, once and for all. As the retiring Grimsby MP, Austin Mitchell, recently said, the Labour party could retain the seat at the election even if its candidate was an "alcoholic" or a "paedophile". Grimsby has been held by Labour since the war. I often said of my true blue home town of Worthing that if the Tories put up a monkey as a candidate it would win. The Tory candidate in Grimsby actually came close to winning at the last election, and she has now switched to the UKIP camp which will make the contest doubly interesting. But the point I am making is that there are still far too many die-hard Socialists who will vote Labour come what may, and similarly with the Tories. Sad isn´t it that so many will do what they have

done all their lives and what their parents did before them. I described the Green party as one comprising wierdos, and after their conference last weekend, there´s little doubt it´s the right description. This is what they were considering:1. The Human Rights Act to be extended to include

about appearing in TV debates is doing David Cameron not one bit of good and I cannot for one moment understand what he thinks he will achieve by it - other than to look absolutely stupid. He is a good enough orator to be able to stand his ground in a televised debate and can run rings around Miliband, so what´s he so

animals so that killers and kidnappers of whales, dolphins and apes will face the same jail sentences as human murderers. 2. A tax on nappies. 3. A better standard of living for rodents. 4. The 1948 Human Rights Act extended to protect 'all sentient life forms. 5. A ban on horse racing. 6. The creation of a fleet of hospital ships for the third world. 7. An alliance with the Scottish National Party and Plaid Cymru to force a minority Labour government to cut the defence budget. 8. Funding taken from nuclear deterrents to be spent on foreign aid, increasing the budget to £16 billion a year, or one per cent of GDP. Playing silly buggers

worried about? One possibility doing the rounds is that he believes that Miliband is thought of so badly that any debate will only serve to help him. Personally, I think Cameron is more frightened of UKIP and knows that Farage can really score points against the Tories. But simply refusing to appear in the kinds of debates we had at the last election makes him look pathetic. The British public deserves better than that and I hope the broadcasters stick to their guns and leave an empty podium if all else fails. One of the more worrying stories of the past week was that since 2011 the migrant population in England has risen by 565,000, with twothirds coming from within the

EU. The figures compiled by Oxford University, suggest the foreign-born population of every local authority in the country may have risen. Carlos Vargas Silva, immigration researcher at Oxford University, said migrants, particularly from the EU, were coming to England for work. "They are finding jobs in low skilled positions and low paid jobs," he said. "So for British workers competing in those positions it means some competition. For employers looking for more workers to fill those gaps, it is good news because they have more employees available." European Union free market rules allow workers to seek jobs wherever they can find them, which means that all the time Britain remains within the EU, there is nothing that politicians can do to reduce the flow. For local councils and the health service it's another perfect storm. Increased populations at a time when budgets are not going up in real terms or which are actually going down spell disaster. As UKIP would argue, there is nothing wrong with Britain encouraging those migrants it wants - the highly skilled who can contribute to the UK economy, but it does not want unskilled economic migrants who flood lowskilled positions and hold down British-born people´s wages. Perhaps this, above anything else, will convince would-be Labour voters to think twice about supporting a party which welcomes migrants with open arms. That´s more than enough about politics. Next I want to give the Australian High Court a pat on the back in ruling that a radio station broke the law over the hoax call made to a UK hospital. Two broadcasters, Mel Greig and Mr Michael

Christian called King Edward VII's Hospital in London in December, 2012, pretending to be the Queen and Prince Phillip. The hospital was treating the Duchess of Cambridge for morning sickness. A nurse who fell for their prank felt so ashamed she later killed herself. The High Court ruling upheld an earlier finding by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) that the station broke the law by not obtaining consent to air the call from either of the hospital staff featured. The station could now be fined or see its licence suspended or revoked. I hope it´s the latter course - a severe penalty is needed to persuade any other broadcaster not to be so crass in future. Finally, these headlines caught my eye...sad and worrying about life in Britain and the speed of change. * Transplant patients are to get organs from cancer victims, drug addicts and those with infections to battle a shortage of healthy donors. Worrying or what? * Britain has one of the lowest petrol prices in Europe before tax and among the highest after VAT and duty are added. How on earth did we allow politicians to get away with it? * In Brighton councillors have decided to remove half of its coin-operated parking meters because of the popularity of doing this through mobile phones and the ease of its use. Wonderful if you know how to use the newfangled devices! * Because of funding cuts more UK councils are turning to charitable trusts to run parks and gardens. Amazing isn´t it that people will pour millions into charities and gripe about paying tax and fuel bills?

Who is St. Patrick? According to the World Book, St. Patrick lived about 389-461A.D., and is the patron saint of Ireland. Patrick was chiefly responsible for converting the Irish people to Christianity. He became known as the Apostle to the Irish. His Latin name is Patricius. Patrick was born in Britian. His father was a wealthy alderman and a Christian. When Patrick was 16 years old, pirates captured him during a raid and sold him as a slave in Ireland. He served as a shepherd of an Irish Chieftain in Ulster. During his captivity, he dedicated himself to religion. After 6 years of slavery he escaped and returned home to Britian. As a result of his experiences in Ireland, Patrick became driven by the idea of converting the Irish to Christianity. To prepare himself for the task, he studied in the monastery of Lerins, an island off the coast of France. He also went to Auxerre, France and studied religion under Saint Germanus, a French Bishop. Partly because Patrick's earlier education was inadequate, his religious superiors were reluctant to let him return to Ireland as a missionary. After Palladius, the first Irish missionary bishop died in 431, Pope Celestine I sent Patrick to Ireland.

Patrick began his work where no one had ever preached Christianity. He gained the trust and friendship of several tribal leaders and soon made many converts. He is said to have founded more than 300 churches and baptized more than 120,000 people. He brought clergymen from England and France for his new churches. He succeeded in his mission to Ireland,

even though many British clergymen opposed him and the way he organized the churches. Patrick preached in Ireland for the rest of his life. Several of Patricks writing have survived and serve as the most important sources of information about his work and life. Patrick wrote "Confession", an account of his spiritual developement. In it he justified his mission to Ireland, and expressed his humility and thankful-

ness that God had called him to serve the Irish. Patrick also wrote a letter to Coroticus, in which he criticized a raid on Ireland conducted by Coroticus, a British chieftain. During the raid, several of Patrick's converts were killed. The letter also reflects Patrick's resentment of the scornful attitude of British clergymen and nobility toward the Irish.

Where is St. Patrick Buried?

One legend has it that he was buried in the same grave as St. Bridget and St. Columba, at Downpatrick, County Down. The jawbone of St. Patrick was believed to be preserved in a silver shrine and was often requested in times of childbirth, epileptic fits and as a preservative against the evil eye. Another legend says St. Patrick ended his days at Glastonbury and was buried there. The Chapel of St. Patrick still exists as part of Galstonbury Abbey. There is evidence of an Irish pilgrimage to his tomb during the reign of the Saxon King Ine in A.D. 688, when a group of pilgrims headed by St. Indractus were murdered. The great anxiety displayed in the middle ages to possess the bodies, or at least the relics of saints, accounts for the many discrepant traditions as to the burial places of St. Patrick and others.

Spanish 163

As we head towards spring I hope you are all making the effort to go out and practise your Spanish language. Whether you´re ordering a drink in a bar or going to the doctors, you will find times when your knowledge of the language is a huge help. I hear many people say things such as “Well I get by with the Spanish I have” and “They always understand me, I use spanglish!” and as they speak they either adopt a tone of being above everyone else or they just laugh. As far as I´m concerned, living in a country and not being able to have a general conversation in the mother tongue is not just lazy but rude, and to be aloof about it or make a joke shows that those people also agree, however they are also too lazy to do anything about it. I´m not saying as soon as you have unpacked you should be getting the books out, but once you know you intend to stay and make this your home then it is the polite and correct thing to do. Yes it´s hard, yes it´s frustrating and yes you will have days when all you want to do is give up and admit defeat believing that you will never get it. But you will. One day you will suddenly talk to someone in Spanish without having to think about what you´re saying, and one day you will understand a conversation. This is the one promise I can make to you, if you work hard and push through those barriers that keep jumping up in your face you will find it was worth the effort. This week, as promised, I am going to give you some sentences to translate from last week´s false friends, so try not to peek as you translate the following: I am worried, I cannot attend class today, It doesn´t bother

me, I am satisfied with my current income, It is easier to make plans than to put them into practice, my teeth are very sensitive, this soup is delicious, the factory produces carpets, The actor had a lot of successes, my family live in the countryside, my sister is in England at present, the table is long and tall, she is a sensible girl. I´m now going to give you a few more false friends to learn and remember; the verb advertir means to warn, the verb to advertise is anunciar, The Spanish word contester is of course a verb and it means to answer the Spanish word for a contest is un concurso, quitar in Spanish is the verb to remove, the way to say to quit in Spanish is abandoner, if you are at school or college or just studying the word you will know for a subject is una asignatura, I hope you are all aware that the word for a signature in Spanish is una firma,

the word aviso means a warning or a notice, to use the word advice you need the Spanish word consejos; arena in Spanish means sand if you want to go to an arena you need to ask for estadio or plaza de toros. If you need a driver you have to ask for un conductor, but if you need someone for your orchestra a conductor is director. For your parties you may need balloons so be sure to ask for globos and not un balón because you will end up with a ball! If you want to talk about habits or customs you can use the Spanish word costumbre however for your fancy dress costume you need disfraz, some of my students learning English get confused with the next word but hopefully you will all be aware of these differences, the Spanish word is idiom which of course means language if you want the Spanish word for idiom you need to say modísmo. Another false friend that gives my students problems at first is jamon which means ham, if you want the word for jam, it´s mermelada. One word that I used to have to practise was lenteja which means lentil if you need contact lenses you have to ask for lentillas, another easy mistake to make is to use the verb presumir which actually means to show off, if you want to say presume you need the verb suponer. So you see there are many words that can confuse and trip you up as you head into this interesting language, it´s true that English does have many Latin-based words, however, as you can see it also has some false friends to be aware of. It´s important to take the time to learn the words correctly and you will not fall into the traps of the above words. Have a great week and keep learning.

BRING BACK FASHION FUN Over in Canada there’s a nostalgic advert for Downtown Halifax which uses actors recreating those 30 year old VHS video clips from various dating sites. They’ve made the cast look as realistic as possible from the fashions of the time through to attitude and it really shows off the array of hairstyles and clothes that we were wearing in the 1980´s. Whilst reading about it I remembered a thought I´d had some weeks before, about how young people today dress fairly normally with their hair basic and all the same, but nothing outlandish. To me the start of the 21st century began a trend that really was non-fashion. It is possible to date every decade of the 20th century by what the people were wearing, from the flapper dresses of the thirties to the mini-skirts of the 60´s and the shoulder pads of the 80´s. However, once the year 2000 began, fashion seemed to change and now I don´t know if a photo was taken in 2001 or 2011. Maybe it´s because I´m

not a great follower of fashion trends, but if I do look at photos from the 21st century I really cannot tell the year in which it was taken. Even the hairstyles seem to be the same, long and wavy! In fact as a bit of research for this piece and to be sure that I hadn´t lost some fashion along the past 15 years, I looked at photos from various times in the past decade and a half and was hard pressed to find any differences! The only thing of note that I could find was in the celebrity photos where they begin to look a little older as the years went on, although in some cases they actually seemed to get younger! But in the photos of the average person, there was no difference in style, and it actually made me feel quite sad. It makes me wonder what young people are going to do in thirty years when they look back on their old snaps. Nowadays those of us who were young more than 20 years ago cringe about our photos as we can´t believe

that we actually looked like that! However I have no

from our 60´s, 70´s and 80´s styles. If that is the case, then

doubt that the young of today will still look exactly the same. The thought did cross my mind that maybe it was because of the increase in technology and photographs. These days when there are so many photos being taken, maybe the creativity has gone from fashion. Young people don´t want to look too different and perhaps because they have learned

it is a shame. I believe fashion designers also have a part to play in this lack of an identity along with today´s celebrities. Young people follow the latest trends of the people they see on their television screens and if those famous faces are sporting the same nondescript hair and clothes as the next one, then that is what today´s youth is going to

have. I don´t actually have many photos of my balmy 80´s styles unfortunately, or maybe luckily. I was never a big follower of fashion, and in fact I think I have more style now than I did then. However it is funny to sometimes look back on the hairstyle I had and when I do find an old photo of myself, it always gives me a smile not only reminiscing about those days but enjoying my unique identity I had back then. I hope that soon fashion will begin to have a ´look´ again, and the boundaries will begin to be pushed rather than remaining in the boring state of how people are looking now. I´m not advocating a return to men wearing makeup and having long locks but at least those days had a ´je ne sais pas´ about them. Whether that style was good or bad of course is debatable, but at least it was different. There is always the question of what can happen in the future and what possible look has yet to be discovered. We´ve had beehives to

crimping, straightening and curls. What can we do to our hair to give it a new edge, something that hasn´t yet been done? I´m not a stylist and so I don´t have the answers as to what we should be wearing or how we should be treating our hair, but I want the next generation to have the same experiences that we did when we were young. Namely, the ability to follow a trend and look back on it in years to come, laughing. I fear that crazy, out of control styling has now gone and therefore we are resigned to a bleak future of long curls and the occasional bit of side shaving for interest. We have men without anything other than anti-wrinkle cream on their faces and women with subtle shades on theirs. As long as celebrities keep to this agenda and those that don´t go completely over the top, Lady Gaga style, then the mode will continue as it is and fashion will continue along its uninteresting road. Pity the young and be glad we grew up with style!

TRELI ON THE TELLY with ALEX TRELINSKI

Jimmy McGovern is one of the great British TV writers in the last quarter century, but even he can have a bad day at the office. Normally we get contemporary themes for his work, but his latest project is a historical effort for BBC2 taking us to a late 18th century Australian convict colony for Banished. A bunch of freshly arrived convicts from old Blighty are mistreated by nasty British soldiers acting as jail warders, etc, etc. You know the rest and you even have the convicts looking in fine fettle as if they’d had a night of fun in Benidorm with pristine white teeth sponsored by Colgate. We have goody and baddy soliders; goody and baddy convicts; and a whole lack of direction

BANISHED NEEDS TO VANISH

in an hour that seems to last longer than Gone with the Wind. At least everybody involved probably enjoyed the Aussie location, but from the same channel that brought you Wolf Hall, this is perhaps the worst thing that the excellent McGovern has ever written. Even the cast members looked like they were going through the motions, or perhaps they just couldn’t believe that McGovern could create such utter mediocrity? Sky One’s new medical drama Critical makes Casualty and Holby City look like Doogie Howser in the most graphic operating theatre scenes I’ve ever seen on the screen. Three episodes in, and the blood is running faster than a water tap as we have a weekly operation that we follow from start to finish.

It’s certainly different and very pacy, and you can understand why Sky have been plugging it for the best of a year. It’s a classy show written by Jed (Line of Duty) Mercurio, and takes him back

to his medical school days and which he wrote about in previous shows Cardiac Arrest and Bodies. Does Critical though have enough about it to make you want to come back again and again

in what is an identical format? For me the answer is yes. Stella has been a standard-bearer for Sky One for the last four years as a high quality comedy set in a Welsh town, full of heart and warmth and some lovely characters. Sadly, series four has been close to a disaster with the show resorting to unrealistic contrived situations and not making us a care a jot. What a great shame that the scriptwriting team led by Ruth Jones seems to have run out

of steam, and it’s rare to have witnessed such a quick negative quality plunge in any show. What does it say about the state of ITV when their weekend morning schedules are filled up by seven hours of repeats of The Jeremy Kyle Show? A few days ago, ITV reported increases in their profits, which is hardly surprising as they seem incapable of investing any money into decent programming. Strange that people leap up and down over the BBC at the drop of the hat, but questions are not being asked about ITV’s failure to fulfill a proper remit as a commercial public service broadcaster. Channel Four and Channel Five must be liking every minute of it, as at least they try to be different, even at the weekend.

Red Nose Day returns with an evening of entertainment to raise money for disadvantaged people in the UK and Africa, and this year the fun comes live from the London Palladium. Continues at 10.40pm. Times and details may vary. There are stunts, dares and the unmissable sight of Dermot O’Leary dancing his socks off (will he survive this danceathon?). In between all this hilarity are sobering film clips reminding us what this is really all about: donating money.

BURGER KING ELIMINATES SOFT DRINKS FROM CHILDREN'S MEAL MENUS

Burger King has dropped sugary soft drinks from its children’s meals menu, following similar action by fast food rivals McDonald’s and Wendy’s that is prompting nutrition campaigners to claim a small but significant victory in the public health battle against obesity. “Applebee’s next!” said one health lobbyist, indicating that campaign groups now want sitdown chain restaurants to take note of the fast-food giants’ moves and follow suit, starting with the popular value eatery Applebee’s. Lobbyists noticed last week that Burger King’s online menus no longer included soda in the list of children’s meals that sell a selection of food and drink items for one price.

When inquiries were made, Burger King confirmed to USA Today that it had withdrawn soda from kids’ meals as part of a new national policy that had been implemented online and is being rolled out across its US franchises. Children can still be served soft drinks, but they will have to be purchased separately from the combo meals designed for them. The kids’ meals in Burger King will now include milk, chocolate milk, apple juice or water with the customary items such as chicken nuggets and fries, rather than sugary soda from the soft drinks fountain. The switch was made as part of an “ongoing effort to offer our guests options that match

lifestyle needs”, Alex Macedo, the president of Burger King North America, told USA Today. The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a consumer advocacy group based in Washington DC, has been lobbying fast food giants for two years to take the action and praised Burger King’s “really important step”. “If you take a hamburger, fries and a soda compared with a hamburger with a side of fruit and a water – the first one is junk, the second one is better,” said Margo Wootan, the center’s director of nutrition policy. “Soda is the No 1 source of calories in children’s diets and offering it in a kids’ meal is the biggest single problem in that meal,” she

added. McDonald’s initiated a public announcement in 2013 when it took the soda option, such as Coke, Sprite and other sugary soft drinks, out of its kids’ “Happy Meals” combinations. Burger King did not make its own announcement and has not attributed its decision to the lobbying efforts of healthy food campaigners. The move by Burger King should make it easier for parents to say no to children’s request for soda with their meals and would help prevent children from developing the habit of having sugary drinks with a meal.

PLAIN CIGS?

All cigarettes in Britain will be sold in plain packets bearing gruesome health warnings under a new law. MPs are expected to vote in favour of the legislation which will come into force from May next year. It follows the example of Australia, which became the first country in the world to introduce the public health law two years ago to deter a new generation of young smokers. Powers to introduce standardised packaging were in passed the Children and Families Act 2014, but MPs must vote on bringing them into force. More than 80 Tory MPs are expected to oppose the move in a free vote this afternoon, but it is likely to pass into law with the support of Labour and the Lib Dems. Critics argue the idea will not prevent people smoking, could confuse consumers and fuel illegal imports. But public health minister Jane Ellison insists the plan would bring the country 'one step closer to our first smoke-free generation'.

Q

Dear Doctor, I have chronic health problems. For many years I´ve been on 2 blood pressure medications, and simvastatin. When I came to Spain 2 years ago, my doctor added Omeprazole to protect my stomach and fosamax for osteoporosis. In the last 6 months however, I have been feeling terrible. My joints and muscles ache, I have constant headaches, my memory is not as good as it used to be, and I now suffer from frequent indigestion, something I never had before. The last blood test from the hospital wasn´t very good and showed a slightly high sugar level. My doctor also told me that my kidneys are not so good. I follow your articles, and I know that some of the drugs that I take such as statins may not be good for me, but I don´t know what to do. I´ll appreciate your advice.

A

What is well-known about medications is that no one can predict what will happen when you take 5 or more prescription drugs together, and the outcome is usually negative. This is because of the drug reactions that occur when prescription drugs are combined. And I see that you are taking at least 5 different medications. Simvastatin is prescribed to lower blood cholesterol level; however it is associated with very serious side-effects. Statins block the cholesterol pathway in the liver, but by doing so; they also block the production of 2 very essential chemicals in the body – Co-enzyme Q10 and Dolichol. CoQ10 is required by every cell in the body for the optimal production of energy. Very active organs in the bone such as the brain, kidney and muscles, require very high amounts of CoQ10 in order to produce adequate amounts of energy. The muscles especially, require a lot of energy to move us from place to place. This is why the commonest side-effect of statins, seen in 80% of people taking it, is muscle pain and muscle weakness. And so taking statins can cause problems such as heart disease, memory loss, kidney problems, as well as diabetes, muscle degeneration, peripheral nerve neuropathy and cancer. Dolichol plays an important role in the nerve transmission of messages from one part of the body to another. Scientists have linked low levels of dolichol in the body to; extreme hostility, road rage, extreme anger and depression. The loss of dolichol in the body is the reason why statins have a huge impact on the brain and nervous system. Even though high blood pressure is treated as a disease by mainstream medicine, it is not. High blood pressure is only a symptom of a disease, and the correct way to manage it, is to find out the cause, and not to prescribe medications. High blood pressure can be caused by problems with the kidneys, nerves, hormones and of course the heart. However, the commonest cause is atherosclerosis, which is the hardening and furring of the arteries. Taking blood pressure medications

rather than treating the cause will hide the underlying cause, and lead to further degeneration of the organs. The most effective way to reverse atherosclerosis is with high dose omega-3 fatty acids (up to 4,500 mg daily for 6 months).

Exercising and eating a healthy diet rich in raw and fresh fruits and vegetables is also helpful. It can be dangerous to come off medications straightaway, especially high blood pressure medications, which have to be gradually tailored-off under the supervision of a health care professional. Most blood pressure lowering medications have a damaging effect on the kidneys and liver. Men should also be aware that a very common but rarely mentioned cause of long term use of blood pressure lowering medication is erectile dysfunction. Fosamax which is commonly prescribed to increase bone density is a deadly drug, in my opinion. Fosamax or alendronate and other such drugs, belong to a class of medications known as bisphosphonates. Bisphosphonates cause severe damage to the kidney and

liver and commonly cause joint and bone pain. One report showed that a third of women on fosamax developed eye problems that could lead to blindness. Other clinical studies have found that those taking fosamax together with steroids had a strong likelihood of developing jaw bone degeneration. Drugs such as fosamax interfere with the natural cycle of bone removal and bone growth, giving rise to bones that are dense but very brittle and prone to fractures. In my experience carrying out diagnostic scans, I find that most women on fosamax show a severe degeneration of the kidneys, stomach, gall bladder and liver. Omeprazole is very commonly prescribed here in Spain to protect the stomach against the effect of other drugs. Most drugs will stimulate the stomach to produce acid which will eventually lead to inflammation of the stomach. However omeprazole which is prescribed to counter this effect is not a benign drug, and is known to cause even worse digestive problems. Omeprazole stops the stomach from producing acid. The stomach however needs this acid to carry out food digestion. Many enzymes that play a role in digestion are only activated by the stomach acid (hydrochloric acid). In addition, stomach acid also destroys harmful microbes that are constantly striving to invade the digestive tract. Omeprazole like many other drugs should only be taken for a few days, even though they are usually prescribed for a life time. In my opinion, most of the problems you are now suffering from have been caused by your medications or worsened by them. You can stop taking statins immediately without worrying about any negative effects. My advice will be to stop taking statins and to check your cholesterol level in 2 months, and if high, to take policosanol, a natural and effective cholesterol lowering medication. You should also discontinue Fosamax immediately, but first speak to your doctor about it, and present him with the facts that I´ve highlighted. INTESTINAL PARASITES ARE MORE COMMON THAN YOU THINK

There is a general misconception that parasites and their associated illnesses only occur in third world countries where the standard of living is low and people live in filthy unhygienic surroundings; this is not so true. Recent technological advancement in medical diagnostics now shows that parasitic infestations are more common place than previously thought. In fact 1 out of every 3 scans performed at our MedB clinic shows intestinal parasites. Parasites can range from microscopic single cell protozoa to worms that are 15 feet long. The most widely spread protozoan parasites in humans are Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba histolytica, Blastocystis hominis and Crytosporidium. These are mostly picked up from contaminated food and water supplies and poor personal hygiene. While it is common knowledge that parasites cause intestinal problems such as diarrhoea and vomiting, few people realise their connection with chronic diseases. A study reported in the Journal of Nutritional Medicine revealed that out of over 400 chronic fatigue patients in New York, an incredible 93 per cent had some form of parasitic infestation. When parasites invade the intestines, they may provoke allergic reactions causing inflammation which leads to a ‘leaky gut

syndrome’: a condition whereby the pores of the intestinal lining are opened too wide, allowing foreign toxic substances to enter the bloodstream. These foreign invaders overload the liver and accumulate in the organs, muscles, lymphatic system and nervous system, thereby creating a wide variety of disease conditions like arthritis, asthma, eczema, chronic fatigue and memory loss. A type of parasite known as Entamoeba Histolytica has been found to migrate to the liver and is capable of causing weight loss and insomnia. Parasites also depress the immune system by excreting toxic waste products into the body. Taking simple precautions and good personal hygiene will go a long way in preventing parasites. Hand washing before eating and after going to the toilet, thorough washing of fresh fruits and vegetables and regular deworming of your pets, are all good practises. Foods such as Papaya, garlic, raw cabbage, pomegranate and pineapple have anti-parasitic properties. The good news is that intestinal parasites are easily treated with a pharmaceutical medication called mebendazole. By Pandora Leo July 23 - August 22 Someone close may feel that you are taking on far more than you can handle or that you should hedge your bets. Virgo August 23 - September 22 Your attempts to reach a better understanding with a friend or loved one could pay sudden, unexpected dividends this week. Libra September 23 - October 22 With so much dramatic action in the area of your skies that rules your love life, almost anything could happen in the week ahead, so keep your options open and let no one make decisions for you. You can sidestep problems if you let your intuition be your guide and focus on your deeper needs and feelings. Only you know what you want long-term.

What matters now is being open to the possibilities around you and prepared to see things from a loved one’s point of view. It also seems that an unexpected twist of fate could turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

Aquarius January 20 - February 18 A piece of news could transform your outlook on a situation that preoccupies you now. RICHARD CAVENDER

Bluemoon Solutions www.bluemoonsolutions.es

BlueMoon Solutions is the computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca, they provide quality computer services at realistic prices and specialise in working with home users and small businesses.

Richard moved to Spain eight years ago having left his management background behind in the UK and decided to use his IT skills to help home users and small businesses with their PC problems. Now a relaxed 'computer man' he is out and about in the Spanish sun every day, making house and shop calls and using his vast experience and qualifications to (usually) sort out the problem there and then. Computers are his hobby as well as his work so don’t be surprised to get an answer to your email in the early hours!

ADVICE: Brian was questioning a Megatrends screen that ADVICE: Diane was having problems with her new appeared on his computer Windows 8 computer

Q

Hello Richard, for the last few weeks I have frequently got a page called American Megatrends when I open my computer, can I get rid of it? Thank you for your help. Brian

Q

Good morning, I just wanted an opinion on a problem I had with my computer.

I bought my computer with Windows 8 from a well-known IT shop near where I live. A couple of days ago I couldnt use my broadband so I phoned the company I use and they assured me that it was not their end so it must be something wrong with the computer. I checked connection which was fine but the home page was saying 'page not available'. I took the computer back to the shop, it was still under guarantee. The next day they told me it was ready and that it was nothing serious but said that I had to pay 25 euros as it was not the hard drive but the software but could not tell me exactly what the problem was. Is this normal under the terms of guarantee? Diane

A

Hi Brian, the Megatrends screen that you are seeing is perfectly normal, it’s what is called your system BIOS and has always been there, it’s critical for the correct operation of your computer, maybe you just haven’t noticed it before.

ADVICE: Doug wanted his Google page to be in English

Q

Hi Richard is it google that has changed to google es - I can get round it by googling google UK but it would be nice if I can get UK first. Thanks Doug

A

Hi Douglas, if your browser has been set to go to www.google.com then because you are in Spain you will automatically be redirected to www.google.es – if you want to see Google in English then its best to set your home page to www.google.co.uk

Hi Diane, although it’s impossible for me to comment on your specific question - I don’t have enough information to answer your specific question as I have not seen the guarantee. I can answer you in general terms and hope that helps?

A

Most manufacturers guarantees protect you from hardware problems relating to the components of the thing that you bought, I’m sure your computer would have been the same, remember that this is a manufacturers guarantee not a retailers guarantee. From what you describe, the problem was resolved by making changes to the software of your computer, if this is the case then that would not have been covered in your manufacturers guarantee and I suspect why your computer company asked you to pay for their time to solve the problem. If the problem was related to a piece of hardware then I would have expected them not to charge you but to return the laptop to the manufacturer for repair – it sounds like this was not necessary? I hope this answers your question, feel free to let me know if it doesn’t.

'DON’T DEMONISE DIESEL’ SAY CAR COMPANIES

ndustry calls on legislators to be ‘technology neutral’ as local authorities plan to penalise diesel car owners The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has launched a campaign to raise awareness of clean diesel technology, as local authorities are drawing up plans to impose surcharges on cars that don’t meet the latest emissions standards. The car industry’s trade body says that confusion over diesel technology could lead buyers to shun the latest clean diesel cars, undermining the UK’s efforts to meet stringent air quality targets. From September 1 this year, all new cars must meet the new Euro 6 emissions standard. However an SMMT survey has revealed that 87% of people are unaware of the latest Euro 6 technologies and their benefits. As far as diesels are concerned, Euro 6 reduces local pollutants such as nitrous oxides, hydrocarbons and particulate matter, which have previously been much higher than on petrol-engined cars. Diesel cars have become hugely popu-

lar with their low CO2 outputs making them particularly cost effective as VED road tax and company car tax are both based on a car’s CO2 figure. The industry claims that low CO2 diesel cars have prevented almost 3 million tones of CO2 from going into the atmosphere between 2002 and 2014. The average CO2 figure for new cars in 2013 was 128.3g/km, down 20% since 2000. The chief executive of the SMMT, Mike Hawes, said: “Today’s diesel engines are the cleanest ever, and the culmination of billions of pounds of investment by manufacturers to improve air quality. Bans and parking taxes on diesel vehicles therefore make no sense from an environmental point of view. We need to avoid penalising one vehicle technology over another and instead encourage the uptake of the latest vehicle technology by consumers.” From April 1 this year, Islington Council in London will be introducing a £96 annual surcharge on resident parking permits for diesel vehicles ‘to protect residents from the health risks associated with diesel emissions.’ Other local authorities are expected to follow similar plans to penalise diesels. European emissions regulations came into effect with

Euro 1 in 1992, with standards becoming increasingly tougher, through to Euro 5 regulations, which were introduced in 2008. Euro 6 regulations are the most stringent yet, using the latest technology to capture 99% of all soot particles, while exhaust after-treatments such as AdBlue have reduced emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) by 84% since 2000.

www.fb.com/TorreviejaTrafficDepartment Hay Fever Season and Driving Problems Suffering from allergies and being a driver are a combination of factors that poses a potential risk on the roads. In a new campaign by the DGT, it is revealed how a sneezing fit of just 5 seconds, means that a car travelling at 90 kilometres per hour covers a distance of 125 metres, the distance greater than a football field, when the driver´s attention is distracted as a result. The sneezing fit can often last longer than 5 seconds though, perhaps 8, 10 or more, with the vehicle continuing to travel without the driver´s full attention. On a normal, dry road, the overall stopping distance for a car travelling at 90 kilometres per hour is calculated at 65.7 metres, just half of the distance covered during our 5 second sneezing fit. During the reaction time alone, the vehicle would have travelled 25 metres. In other words, in the event of an incident ahead, there would not be enough time to react and stop. Sneezing is only one symptom of an allergic reaction, most commonly Hay Fever at this time of year, severe itching of the eyes,

irritation, congestion or a runny nose, light sensitivity and many more combinations of symptoms, all make driving particularly problematic for sufferers. Drugs to combat the physical symptoms can help ease the dreaded onset of Hay Fever, but some of these drugs also cause problems with driving, sometimes causing drowsiness, or other problems, and can interact with prescribed medication. Sufferers of Hay Fever might have already realised that the pollen season has started early once again in Spain, but it can vary depending on the geographical location. Within the car, keeping the vehicle clean, inside and out, can remove much of the residual pollen, as can the installation of filters in the air distribution system. Keeping windows closed, wearing sunglasses and avoiding key problematic times such as dawn and dusk can all ease the symptoms. All antihistamines sold in Spain should carry a pictogram on their packaging, depicting a car within a danger warning signal, which is designed to alert drivers of

the possible effects on the ability to drive safely. However, it may not be present on imported medication. But, if you see this sign you need to be aware that your driving ability is likely to be affected. If you are taking any medication, make sure you read the instruction leaflet, or check with your doctor or pharmacist about interactions with other medication and driving. The website from the Sociedad Española de Aerobiología, www.polenes.com, can offer information within Spain, and allows you to select the different regions to see the current status of pollen and help you plan your driving activities. You can get more information about driving in Spain by following us on Facebook, just search for “N332”, or on our website, n332.es.

COOKING WITH GUINNESS Beef and Guinness Stew

Make this the day before you plan to eat it as the flavours concentrate much more. INGREDIENTS 25g butter 150g bacon lardons or pancetta 300g shallots, left whole 1kg stewing beef, cubed 400g mixed wild mushrooms 1 litre stout, such as Murphy’s or Guinness 1 bouquet garni Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper METHOD

Preheat the oven to 160°C/ 325°F/gas mark 3. Put the butter in a frying pan over a medium heat. When the butter has melted add the bacon, followed by the shallots. Cook until golden brown and transfer to a large casserole. Add the beef to the frying pan, season with salt and pepper and cook until browned all over. Transfer to the casserole. Add the mushrooms to the pan and cook for two minutes. Season to taste and transfer to the casserole. Return the frying pan to the heat and use a whisk to scrape off all the bits stuck to the bottom of the pan (this is where the flavour is). Pour in the stout and continue to whisk for another minute; this process is known as deglazing. Pour the stout and pan juices over the beef and vegetables in the casserole. Add the bouquet garni, cover the casserole and cook in the oven for two hours. Check the seasoning, take out the bouquet garni and serve with creamy mash or roast potatoes.

Chocolate, Stout and Ginger Cake

Serves 12-14 250ml/8½fl oz stout (Guinness is fine) 250g/8¾oz butter, sliced 100g/3½oz 70 per cent good-quality plain chocolate 5g/1¼oz cocoa powder 1 tbsp dried ginger powder 400g/14oz caster sugar 140g/4¾oz sour cream 2 eggs 1 vanilla pod, seeds scraped 275g/9¾oz self-raising flour 2 tsp bicarbonate of soda Icing 300g/10½oz cream cheese 100g/3½oz icing sugar 125ml/4¼fl oz double cream Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/gas 4. Butter and line a 23cm/9in loose-bottomed baking tin. Pour the Guinness into a large saucepan, add the butter and chocolate and place over a medium heat. When the butter and chocolate are completely melted, take off the heat and stir in the cocoa, ginger and sugar. Combine the sour cream with the eggs and vanilla seeds and pour into the chocolate mix. Stir well. Sieve in the flour, bicarbonate and a pinch of salt and fold to combine. Transfer the cake mix to the tin and bake for 45 minutes until an inserted skewer comes out clean. Leave to cool completely in the tin. To make the icing, whip the cream cheese in a big bowl until smooth, then sieve over the icing sugar and beat well. In another bowl, whip the cream until it doubles in volume, then add to the cream cheese mixture. Combine well, then spread over the cooled cake and serve.

CODE CRACKER

Code Cracker is a crossword puzzle with no clues; instead, every letter of the alphabet has been replaced by a number, the same number representing the same letter throughout the puzzle. All you have to do is decide which letter is represented by which number. In this week’s puzzle, 15 represents M and 19 represents Q, when these letters have been entered throughout the puzzle, you should have enough information to start guessing words and discovering other letters.

I guess we have all done it at one time or another but only when it’s our mates in attendance not with TV cameras following our every move and most certainly not as the world’s number one golfer, who should be setting an example. But to make it worse, if it could be, he did it without temper or tantrum, it was with graceful passion. So it is probably timely to point out the following proverb, “Let he without sin cast the first three iron”. So if you are looking for someone to condemn Rory McIlroy for hurling his three iron into Donald Trumps’ blue lagoon at last week’s WGC Cadillac Championship, you have come to the right place. I do not condone such action on or off TV but there is a small element of understanding for his watery fling, as golf is sometimes the most frustrating game invented/discovered. Even the laid back and cool Adam Scott who admitted to throwing a club about four

years ago in a casual game. Let’s face it if it can get to Scott it can get to anyone, and then there was Bobby Jones, the man who was Prince of good manners who many years ago said: “Sometimes the game cannot be tolerated with a golf club in your hand”. There are those that excuse it by saying things like, “Sometimes the bloody things deserve it!” So if you have ever played this game of golf you will know what they mean, but, it has to be said that golf is a game then when you act on impulse, you are in big trouble. As McIlroy is the world’s

leading player and the appealing face of the worldwide game, it was most certainly a shocking breach of on the course code of behaviour. It took just a brief moment to take in. Did Rory McIlroy really throw his three-iron further than most can throw a Frisbee? Let alone a custom made Nike Golf club, to a watery grave. He did and was only mildly embarrassed. He did say though it is not something that young players should emulate, that assuming that us older ones already know better. It was not one of his proudest moments either. It has to be said though it was beautiful in its raw emotion and execution as Lee Westwood said “a nice full release and extension down the line”. We cannot expect our super stars to be perfect, and passion works both ways especially in the heat of competition. However there are double standards involved, as if it had been Tiger Woods who had hurled a club in any direction, it would have bought the wrath of the gods down on him because it’s Tiger. Not so with Rory, but he cannot allow his petulance to get the better of him. Tiger’s etiquette failures have usually been limit-

ed to bad language, but he is not alone in that misdemeanour, but most offenders who retort their frustrations do not have multiple sensitive microphones picking up their every utterance, but he has been known to fling a club as well. If there is anything to be learned from this episode, it is the manner in which Rory handled the incident. He was embarrassed and humble and could have been defensive. He said all the right things. It is not as though club throwing is common place on the various Tours, although Marcel Siem did the same thing at the same spot on the next day. Rory did admit that he thought twice about throwing the club, but knowing Nike would replace it, he did, proving he was of sound mind. Then he came to the point that every frustrated golfer anywhere understands. He had intended to hit a soft fade and instead he hit a big draw into the agua: - not the first time he had set up to hit one shot and finished hitting the ball in the opposite direction. “Whatever” Rory thought as he saw his club sailing away (metaphorically speaking of course), I guess he must have known that Donald Trump would get a scuba diver to retrieve the misbehaving three-iron. Maybe because Nike Golf would ask Rory to pay for a new club! It reminds me of what the great commentator Henry Longhurst once wrote: - “The most exquisitely satisfying act in the world of golf is that of throwing a golf club. The full backswing, the delayed wrist action, the flowing follow through, followed by that

unique whirring sound, reminiscent of a flock of starlings, are without parallel in sport”. Poetry in motion! Rory’s partners on the day were Bubba Watson and Henrik Stenson who were not offended by Rory’s action, Stenson just said , “It takes one to know one” when confessing to having throwing his share of clubs over the years. Etiquette is as bigger part of the game as tee shots, with club throwing the equivalent of breaking wind loudly at a formal dinner. Little wonder that Rory’s mind must have wandered back to what his father thought about what he had done. I can remember when my son committed the offence at Valle del Este with his mother present. His ears burnt for weeks and the tinnitus longer. Club throwers are not popular anywhere and many of them and many do not

realise how pathetic they look when they make a habit a flinging clubs. Armchair physiologists may interpret that it is the manifestation of the pressure Rory is under as The Masters gets ever closer. That’s maybe taking it a little far. It was probably more of the frustration of hitting a shot that is well in range and that you have done hundreds of times, and on the one time you need it, you screw it up. Been there done it, got the Tee shirt. The game comes and goes like a dream in the night. The same goes for Rory’s three-iron. Well until the sub aqua diver brought it back! It will either be mounted or given to a charity. If you haven’t seen it here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/w atch?v=t9O5X03Nygc and recovered: https://www.youtube.com/w atch?v=39rnl1HYB3I

TITTER ON THE TEE A young ventriloquist is touring Essex and puts on a show in a small town. With his dummy on his knee, he starts going through his usual dumb blonde jokes. Suddenly, a blonde woman in the fourth row stands on her chair and starts shouting, "I've heard enough of your stupid blonde jokes. What makes you think you can stereotype Essex blonde women that way?” “What does the colour of a woman's hair have to do with her worth as a human being? It’s men like you who keep women like me from being respected at work and in the community, and from reaching our full potential as people. Its people like you that make others think that all blondes are dumb! You and your kind continue to perpetuate discrimination against not only blondes, but women in general, pathetically all in the name of humour!”

Kevin is nearly struck by a ball played by a player in the following group. In anger, Kevin hits the ball back towards the group. Has Kevin played a practice stroke or a wrong ball?

ANSWER

No. However, in equity (Rule 1-4), Kevin should incur the general penalty of loss of hole in match play or two strokes in stroke play. What does the term ‘Equity’ mean? Occasionally situations arise that are simply not covered by The embarrassed ventriloquist begins to apologise, and the Rules of Golf, thus a decision must be made according to the blonde interrupts shouting, "You stay out of this! Real Madrid surrendered their leadership of the Primera Division to their deadly rivals Barcelona, as they lost at Athletic Bilbao last Saturday thanks to a first-half header by Aritz Aduriz(pictured). The European champions lacked their usual intensity and attacking flair, above all in the first half, and dropped points for the second match running after a draw with Villarreal. They should be good for a win though against relegation threatened Levante on Sunday, after a poor Champions League display on Tuesday night.

clear of Cristiano Ronaldo. Both sides had their right-backs sent off, with Tito getting two yellow cards for Rayo and Dani Alves getting a straight red for bringing down Alberto Bueno, who scored a consolation goal for the visitors, only for Suarez to pounce again in stoppage-time. This was a merciless performance from Luis Enrique's side, who go one point clear at the top of the table and travel to Eibar tomorrow (Saturday).

(Agg: - 5-4)

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has apologised for his team's Tuesday night Champions League performance against Schalke, admitting they deserve all the criticism they get. The defending champions were booed off at the Bernabeu after losing the second leg 4-3 despite reaching the quarter-finals 5-4 on aggregate. Fans also waved white handkerchiefs - a symbol of disgust at a bad performance. "I'm very sorry. We played very badly and that is bad for our image," said Ancelotti. "We're professionals, we don't make ourselves look ridiculous." The 10-time European champions have qualified for their fifth successive Champions League quarter-final but were left hanging on at the Bernabeu as they suffered a fifth defeat of 2015. which included Saturday’s La Liga failure at Athletic Bilbao.

ILICITANOS MARCH ON ELCHE 1

Elche got a priceless victory last Saturday against relegation rivals Almeria in a result that seems them only a handful of points off the top half of the table. Victor Rodriguez scored the only goal of the game with just five minutes on the clock, although Elche passed up plenty of opportunities to extend their lead, and had a second goal harshly ruled out for a foul. Although they only managed the one goal, this was an energetic and impressive performance from the Ilicitanos, who have taken 10 points from their last five matches and now sit 14th in the table – three points above Almeria, who still occu-

py the final relegation place, in what is an incredibly tight table. Almeria came out of the blocks the faster of the two teams but failed to turn their attacking energy into chances, and they fell behind the first time Elche came forward. As ever, talismanic forward Jonathas de Jesus(back from injury) played a pivotal role in the goal. The Brazilian received the ball on the left wing and toyed with Almeria defender Ximo Navarro, coasting past the full-back by the byline and then chipping the ball for Rodriguez to head in from close range. Almeria's expert header Tomer Hemed could have equalised but he failed to make the most of Jonathan Zongo's fine cross - and a minute later Elche almost doubled the lead. Aaron Niguez came racing down the left and cut inside the area to shoot but Sebastian Dubarbier made the block and the ball fell to Mario Pasalic(pictured) only for his shot to be deflected over the bar by Navarro. Elche were left frustrated again a few minutes later, when Enzo Roco headed Faycal Fajr's corner in at the near post but the effort was chalked off for an alleged foul by the Chilean on Almeria

goalkeeper Julian Cuesta. Almeria improved after the break but Elche continued to dominate and create the better chances, with Garry Rodrigues and Jonathas both forcing saves from Cuesta, but one goal would prove sufficient for the hosts, who travel to Sevilla in good spirits this Sunday.

UNLUCKY FOR SOME?

CD Torrevieja are back in action tonight(Friday 13th) for a long journey to the northern part of the Valencia region away to Castellon with a 8.30pm kick off, which will probably see the team and the supporters back home at around 3.00am! The fixture follows last weekend’s cancellation of all group six division three matches at the order of the Valencian Federation in protest against new laws that they claim will lead many clubs to fold. The new legislation is ironically designed to protect the livelihood of players and coaching staff, with new social security and insurance regulations. With twelve matches remaining, Torrevieja’s encounter away to second-placed Castellon is crucial in reviving their slim promotion hopes. Torry beat this famous club in October at the Vicente Garcia by a single goal netted by Borja(pictured on the right) - his only strike of the season so far, and they also won the corresponding fixture last season. Castellon beat CD Tropezón last week by 2-0 in their RFEF cup first leg semi-final match and take that advantage to the Segunda B group 1 outfit on March 19th trying to secure a place in the final. Before that Torry will be hoping to put a dent in their championship hopes, as well as steer themselves back on course towards a place in the top

four. Despite a horrendous recent run, winning one point from a possible 18, Torry sit only six points off a play-off slot. Including tonight’s match, Torry has to play 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the table, so victories against these teams could reignite their season. It’s not an impossible scenario for Torrevieja, who also have "lesser" matches against struggling opposition, such as Jove, La Nucia and Requena, who all occupy relegation spots. With Martin, Sergi, Rafa Gomez, Eddy and Ferran all sidelined, plus captain Jorge suspended, it is a tough ask for tonight, but Torry has an abundance of talent remaining to get on with the job. Off the field, CD Torrevieja have a new PR manager at the club, Chris Darwen, who arranged a live streaming event with boss of cult on-line game, Football Manager, Paul Wandless, who encouraged community members to become socios, as well as buying club merchandise and donating to the club via www.footballmanagercentral.com Darwen is part of the Real Oviedo Shareholders Trust and used his experience and contacts there to get the event up and running and raised some 500 euros for the club. The FM Central group is now a recognized pena for CD Torrevieja and will be organizing more activities to boost club funds.

The best swimmers from the Valencia region came together last weekend at Castellon’s Municipal Olympic pool, for the 2015 Winter Regional Championships, with three competitors(pictured with coach Juanma) from Club Natacion Torrevieja taking part in the Infantil (13 to 15 year) competition. The weekend saw a mixed bag of performances with a nervous start for Paula Garcia and Elian Del Rio Castillo in their 400 metre freestyle events and for Zoe Connolly in her 200 metre backstroke, although she came tenth with a new personal best time. In the following 100 metre freestyle, it was

On the second day of action, Zoe was first to swim in a disappointing 100 metre backstroke race which saw her 12th, but it was Paula who has an excellent swim in her 50 metre freestyle getting a new personal best as she finished ninth. The last races for the team saw new personal best for all three swimmers, namely Paula and Elian in the 200 metre freestyle and Zoe in the 400m medley, which saw her placed sixth. The girls came sixteenth out of the 29 clubs in the Infantil Category, a good position given the fact that Torrevieja only had two swimmers.

UGLY RULES OK!

The ugly side of the beautiful game has returned lately. First Spit The Dog was off the leash at St James Park; we all saw Newcastle’s Cisse do it but surprisingly Man United’s Jonny Evans was also found guilty of the filthy practice – ban ‘em bigtime, I say - they don’t like it up ‘em, Cap’n Mainwaring! At Villa Park on Saturday we had an old-fashioned pitch invasion, and I have to say, yes, they shouldn’t have done it. But if you saw the sheer unadulterated joy on the faces of those Villa fans whose woeful season has been suddenly catapulted into ecstasy in the space of four days, then have a heart, mate… The Villain’s captain and first vital goalscorer Fabian Delph claimed he was actually bitten by an over-exuberant fan - hopefully not a West Brom one, Suarez-style, but that’s what delirium does for you.

Of course, the obnoxious practice of the footballers themselves putting a finger to one nostril and emitting snot from the other in full view of everyone, spectators and TV cameras alike still continues to appal – who taught ‘em that? I’m sure when I went to First Division matches, when Pontius was a pilot in the Sixties and Seventies, they didn’t do that. Watching the Six Nations Internationals recently I didn’t see our cultured cousins who play that other hooligan’s game doing that vile act, and dare one ask why that is? The game of rugby is violence-fuelled itself, far more than football, yet the game still manages to retain its dignity… …which brings me nicely to modern technology, and what we can learn from the educated game of rugby? It’s taken years, soccer dragged kicking and screaming all the

way to even implement goal line technology, and surprise, surprise, it works perfectly, no arguments there now. The role of the football referee today in the white-hot cauldron of Premier League football is unenviable, you have to wonder why they do it. It’s a can’t win situation where a ref who has a good game and gets most of his decisions right rarely gets any credit. The poor men (imagine the abuse if and when we have female referees) have to make split-second decisions based on what they see and (mostly) stick by them. Then the beleaguered buggers have to undergo countless trial-byTV post-mortems by highlypaid pundits and presenters, most of whom failed as managers (you know who you are), who even then cannot agree amongst themselves. Who’d be a ref? But wait – let’s look, listen

DAY OF FUN

The area’s newest Rugby club, the Costa Cobras, were blessed with fine weather for their first fun day last Saturday at the Daya Vieja sports ground. The aim was to publicise the club and to attract new players of all ages and standards, with thanks going out from the Cobras to all the local businesses that supported the event with donations of prizes. Training sessions for the juniors at Daya Vieja are on Monday and Wednesday from 6.00pm until 7.30pm, with the seniors taking over between 8.00pm and 9.30pm. For more details, phone Dutch on 692 767 242.

and learn – once again from our cultured cousins, who have the referee thing all buttoned down. While we’re on the subject, how has rugby always managed to retain its dignity and authority with refereeing over the years, while football has done exactly the opposite? Comic relief? Did you see Angel di Maria push Michael Oliver in the back on Monday night’s FA cup clash with Arsenal and get sent off? BTW, I’m not singling Man U out for any unfair treatment here, honest, but arguably as the UK’s most world famous football club, with regular home crowds of 75,000, shouldn’t United be setting standards at Old Trafford, not dragging them down, with spitting at each other and shoving refs? No, I’m talking about the way rugby refs call for help with difficult decisions. They stop the game and clearly indicate they want a video

replay, and another official somewhere far from the madding crowd takes a quiet, independent balanced view of the incident on his TV monitor(s), and radios back to the relieved official who then takes the recommended action. Now what could be fairer than that? But will football do it? The answer is probably yes, but Blattering around meantime, implementing the rule in about ten years’ time, during which we will see countless more disgusting incidents of footballers surrounding and hounding the refs and much more controversy. It’s madness, when the solution is so obvious, it hurts. Tackling: there’s been much similar hot-debating going on recently about potentially ‘legbreaking/career-threatening’ clashes, where some players have been booked, sent-off and some others even

ignored with play waved on. Isn’t it time some clarification and new rules established on just what is offensive – and what isn’t? It used to be just ‘studs up’ was the chief culprit, but now we have the nasty two-footed variety which gets some, but not everybody going. Did you see West Brom’s Claudio Yacob’s red card against Villa in the Battle of Brum last week? Tony Pulis, who is a fair manager, not one-eyed like some I could Mou-dily mention, said the tackle was perfectly fair. What about the ‘Oscar’ one ha ha by Ibrahimovic that got PSG reduced to ten men on Wednesday – the pundits all said a yellow only - and they’re British… So plenty to ponder about: if we want our national sport to remain beautiful, then some cosmetic surgery is drastically needed to stop it becoming uglier.

WEEKEND FIXTURES

Second from bottom ITV Orihuela Vega Baja are away to bottom club Lorca this weekend in their territorial first division encounter, whilst in the second division, the San Javier Sharks are away to the team just above them, Totana. In the cadetes league, Torrevieja Tigers are at Totana, and ITV Orihuela go to Lorca as the warm-up attraction before the clash of the senior sides.

BRIDGE OF SIGHS!

By John McGregor It was a Pretty Super Game on Wednesday night as PSG beat Chelsea on away goals in the Champions League. What an amazing match - and you have to say the French Champions deserved to go through. Down to ten men with

LOUIS’ LATEST LOSS Where do you stand? United, van Gaal is rebuilding steadily? Or no, it’s all doom and gloom, the big Dutchman’s frivolously lashed out millions, won nothing now again this season, so he’s failed and gotta go? With United nervously hanging on to fourth place and mandatory Champions League qualification, there’s going to be ten High Noons for the famous Old Trafford club and United are going to be put to the severest test. Loathed Liverpool are only two points behind, Spurs three and Southampton four. Ironically the remaining games start off at home with Tottenham on Sunday, then Liverpool at Anfield, nasty neighbours Man City at the Theatre of Dreams, Chelsea at The Bridge and a re-run of Monday’s cup tie at home to Arsenal. We-ell, that’s a doddle, eh? The Liverpool game alone has almost got Cup Final status given the mutual hatred between the clubs. You have to say van Gaal’s United do not look up to the job – and of late, Liverpool do, all credit to Brendan Rodgers. The 75,000 faithful who turn up for every home game must be deeply worried: Di Maria’s idiotic sending off on Monday night for shoving the ref looked symptomatic of United’s woes - it was Paulo di Canio all over again. £250,000 a week (!) Falcao, end of season price to buy £50m was on the bench on Monday. He didn’t play, has only scored four goals in six months, and ignominy complete turned out for the U 21 side in the week. The Columbian didn’t score there either and was substituted – and he’s not injured. Funny game, football.

the early ‘encouraged’ sending off of talisman Ibrahimovic, PSG twice came back to equalise and stun a lacklustre Chelsea, the irony being that £50m ha ha cast off David Luiz scored the first of two power headers to sensationalise Stamford Bridge.

Now the Blues have to pick ‘emselves up again and test Southampton’s stickability situation in the big time as the Saints travel to Stamford Bridge in the early Sunday match. Chelsea did win the poor man’s Capital Cup which looked like Mourinho’s men had got over their mid-season crisis, but PSG really showed up the cracks a g a i n . Perhaps Jose may be cracking his face with a wry smile as his old club Real Madrid have been overhauled by Barcelona at the weekend at the top of La Liga, just squeezing through in

the Champions league despite being beaten at home by Schalke. Back to basics: if Man City wobble again away against spirited Burnley who crave the points, then it must be Chelsea’s championship – but of course, this is football – and you never know, as perfectly demonstrated by Laurent Blanc’s heroes. They’re excited again at The Emirates as the Gunners are back at Wembley, albeit in the semis against the winners of Bradford and Reading. The (real) FA Cup holders eased past Man U, how ironic is football that van-Gaalreject Danny Welbeck at a paltry £16m scored the winner against his own beloved United with his electric pace and reflexes - you need those to beat David de Gea these days. Where would United be without the Spaniard’s amazing saves this season? London derby Saturday for Arsenal against weary West Ham, whose seasonal bubbles are fading away – and Sam won’t stay, he said poetically. Is it last drink saloon for bottom club Leicester this Saturday at home to nine-points-ahead Hull? Four points behind second-bottom Burnley means the Foxes first season back in the big time will not be one to be remembered. Will Nigel Pearson last? While there’s still a slight

chance to stay up, possibly no… And if they go down, will Quite Probably Relegated be with them? Spurs turned the screw at Loftus Road last weekend in the only Prem match, a London derby and guess what? This Saturday, the Hoops have got another one, only this time opponents Crystal Palace who are not completely safe themselves, and Pardew’s pleasers will want to be Glad All Over again. Sunderland v Villa looks a who-dares-not-lose six pointer: the Black Cats have 26 points in 16th place, just above and one point ahead of the resurgent Villains. It’s looking like Tim Sherwood will never have to buy another drink in Birmingham - well, make that north Brum, not in the sunslipping West as in Bromwich. Two derby matches against the Clarets bitterest locals rivals, one Prem, one FA Cup, both won meant a strident step toward survival and a day out down the M1 to Wembley for the fans: Tim for Pope! Hey, is it a coincidence that Everton are doing well in the Europa League but in the Prem, the Toffees season is sticky, only 14th place with 28 points? That Thursday night football is proving to be a handicap in the no-prisoners-taken Prem every week, where Martinez’s men look knackered cum t‘ weekend. Newcastle at Goodison Park looks interesting on Sunday.
