SLAVE GANG JAILED

BY ALEX TRELINSKI

A

Madrid-based white slavery gang that also operated out of Torrevieja has been arrested by the Guardia Civil in Alicante,

A

and put in front of a Torrevieja judge who remanded four into custody. The gang of four men and a woman, who are all Romanian nationals would

ship in women from Romania and would force them into prostitution in the Torrevieja area on the streets, as well as in hotels, clubs, and private homes.

The Guardia started investigating six months ago when they got complaints from women's groups that sexual exploitation was going on in the area, and discovered that the gang were running a substantial operation with four houses being used to put up their slaves, who they also threatened with violence if they did not go along with their plans. A variety of charges have been laid against the gang including sexual exploitation and money laundering, in addition to freeing half a dozen women who forced to work for them.

BLAST BLAZE

35-year-old man is lucky to be alive after he suffered 50 percent burns caused by a fire following an explosion in the courtyard area of his house on Camino de Iryda in Pilar de

la Horadada on Tuesday morning. Several fire tenders arrived at the scene with a blaze raging on the ground floor of the property. The man had been pouring fuel into a generator

when the blast happened at around 11.00 am, with one theory that some of the fuel may have seaped onto a nearby butano cylinder. The injured man was rushed to the burns unit of Alicante

General Hospital, whilst a second person was treated for minor injuries. The two men had been taking down a wooden hut in the courtyard which was incinerated in the blaze.

One of the biggest counterfeit note operations ever seen in Spain has seen a 60year-old man arrested at his San Pedro del Pinatar home, with fake euro notes to the value of one and a half million discovered inside, as well as all of the equipment to used print them. Four Moroccans and three Spaniards were arrested in a joint operation between the Guardia Civil and the National Police, which included the detention of the ring-leader in San Pedro, Juan Pedro GS. All the

arrests were made in the Murcia region The gang boss was viewed as one of the best forgers in Spain, and fake notes produced and by his gang were being distributed across EU countries. The man also looked after himself by producing an ID card and passport, with authorities suggesting that he was looking to diversify his operation by fleeing Spain and getting to produce fake US dollars. He had previously been arrested on forgery charges in 2005.

Beloved Virgen

Wrong Card, Mate! A 32-year-old Spanish fraudster from Callosa who went round petrol stations and shops around the Vega Baja spinning a story about having the wrong credit card but still taking the goods, has been arrested by the Guardia Civil. The Guardia from Guardamar detained the man this week on suspicion of at least one robbery with violence and intimidation; two counts of using false car number plates; as well as charges of theft and fraud committed at Almoradi, Bigastro, Benejúzar, Callosa, and San Fulgencio. The con involved him pulling up at a gas station or tobacconists in a car with a false plate on it to avoid identification. He would then go in with a black credit card and give it to the shop assistant when it was

the tale was spun about the “wrong” credit card. The fraudster then got angry and pulled out a knife and made his escape, with the Guardia saying that he resorted to threats and violence if he couldn’t make a clean getaway. Witness statements, increased patrols, and the use of CCTV footage led to the con man’s arrest this week, with officers discovering a selection false number plates in his car.

Butano Boost Butano gas prices have fallen again with the latest bi-monthly review producing a 58 cent drop as of Tuesday which puts the maximum price of a cylinder, according to the government, at 11.27 euros. Butano costs have been

time to pay for his cigarettes and other goods, but then he would say that it was the wrong card, and that he would go back to his vehicle to get the right one. The fraudster took his purchases with him and then drove off without paying. Word got out around the Vega Baja region that the man was playing the con, and a Bigastro shop owner who got wise to what was going on, refused to let him leave his premises when

slashed by nearly 36 percent since charges of 17.50 euros per cylinder back in March 2015. The price change applies to orange bottles of butano only, not the lighter-weight silver ones for which retailers can set their own prices,

and those who have their gas delivered as part of a contract may have to pay few cents extra. The new price will remain in force until the third Tuesday in September, when it will be reviewed in line with international prices.

Last Saturday saw regional coastal towns and cities celebrating the feast of the Virgen del Carmen, who is the patron saint of sailors and fishermen. Torrevieja was typical of the celebra-

tions with a statue of the Virgen del Carmen being carried around the city area before she went to the harbour for her annual trip on the waters before returning safely to shore.

Pilar Spends Pilar de la Horadada council has awarded a two month contract worth 85 thousand euros to repair stair access to beaches and coves in the area. The authority is also going to spend 17 thousand euros on a feasibility report

A 51-year old unnamed man died after his light aircraft crashed in the San Javier area last Friday evening. His plane fell out of the sky at around 8.30 pm near the rubbish tip close to the RM-1 highway at exit 5.

Emergency services were called out by witnesses who saw flames go up from the site of the crash, but although fire-fighters and paramedics rushed to the scene, they were unable to save the pilot, who had

been killed instantly. There were no passengers on board. The fire brigade cordoned off the area until they were able to put the flames out. It is not known what caused the crash.

Grateful Thanks

An unnamed 55-year-old woman has passed on hugs and thanks to three Cruz Roja lifeguards who rescued her at Guardamar's at Playa de La Roqueta nearly a fortnight ago as she lost conciousness in the water. Red flags were ignored as she went into the sea with her husband who managed to get to shore to alert the lifeguards, who then pulled her out of the strong currents. She was then

revived

and

Who’s Lying Now?

Mozzie Spreads

Valencia's health ministry says that the tiger mosquito is now present in 34 locations across Alicante Province according to a study from Valencia University. Except for a small part in the north at Marina Alta, the tiger mosquito is present in every coastal municipality as well as further inland. The greatest period of

activity for the insect is between May and November, with the greatest concern being that it can spread up to 22 infectious diseases prevalent in other countries including zika, dengue fever or chikungunya. People are being advised not to let water stagnate outside or indoors in any form of container to stop the spread of the mosquito.

Cyber Rise

Orihuela coastal councillor, Sofía Álvarez, has angrily told the socialist PSOE councillor, Víctor Ruiz, to "stop lying about the work of the Tourism Department", after he said the PP-controlled council had been “ripped off” over

their new tourist website which he said was a copy of those used by other areas like Alcoy and Gandia. Álvarez said it was one of the best tourism sites in the region and that the bidder for the tender was the cheapest offer, adding that

Ruiz ought to apologise. He was quoted in The Courier a fortnight ago saying that since the site design was used elsewhere, it should not have cost the best part of five thousand euros to produce, and accused Álvarez of lying.

Tributes Paid

San Javier Mayor, José Miguel Luengo, led a minute's silence outside the town hall last Friday morning

in memory of the victims of last week's terror attack in Nice. Similar tributes were paid outside council buildings

across the Costa Blanca and Mar Menor including Orihuela, Torrevieja, Pilar de la Horadada and Dolores.

Alicante Province had the

fourth highest number of cybercrime complains lodged last year, with 2,800 cases being reported to authorities. Spain’s ministry for state security said that there were 60 thousand reported cybercrimes across the country last year, a rise of forty percent over the last four years. Most cases revolved around scams as well as personal details being hijacked, in addition to the distribution and making of pornography.

All Clear

Following a glowing report on the state of bathing water on the Costa Blanca beaches last week, a similar result has appeared across the Mar

Menor with the Murcia government saying that over 800 samples had been taken and analysed since mid-May with no problems discovered.

US ELECTION Texas Senator Ted Cruz was booed as he failed to endorse Donald Trump as the Republican nominee, during a speech at the party convention in Cleveland. TURKEY COUP Turkey's president has declared a state of emergency for three months following Friday night's failed army coup. VITAMIN D Britons should consider taking vitamin D supplements in autumn and winter. The vitamin regulates calcium and phosphate, which are important for healthy bones, teeth and muscles. Sunlight is the main source of the vitamin for most people but everyone's bodies convert it differently. BANKER ARRESTED A senior HSBC executive faces fraud charges over a currency trade from which the bank allegedly profited at a client's expense. Mark Johnson, the London-headquartered lender's head of global foreign exchange cash trading, and Stuart Scott, a former colleague, were accused of defrauding an unnamed company by 'front-running' a $3.4bn purchase of sterling for their own benefit. BRECON DEATH A soldier who died while on a training exercise in the Brecon area of Wales has been described as a "superfit boy" by his family. Josh Hoole collapsed at around 9am on Tuesday as he returned to Dering Lines infantry training centre from a Basic Combat Fitness Test - in which he had to walk eight miles in two hours with 25kg on his back.

Water Watch

Alicante Province residents are being told not to waste water during the high summer season in a campaign being run by the Alicante Provincial Council. The initiative was launched last weekend for an area that is almost permanently in a drought situation with a major media campaign asking consumers to use water sparingly.

Life Saved A German shopper at Zenia Boulevard, who suffered a cardiac arrest, was saved thanks to the prompt action of security staff. An on-site defibrilator was used on the tourist, with medics saying that the presence of the equipment and the quick response of staff almost certainly saved the man's life.

A Closer Watch

Spain's interior ministry has tightened security in areas frequented by tourists, including the coasts and major monuments, and to reinforce border controls following last week's Bastille Day Nice attack which killed over 80 people. As yet, the country has no plans to increase its terrorism risk level from 4, the highest being 5 which would imply the Armed

Forces patrolling the streets. Armed police will be on patrol in airports across the country, and the extra controls planned at the French border, which were due to end on July 26th, will continue until further notice. A crisis meeting with the government's anti-terrorism squad, including members of the CNI, or national Intelligence service, was held the morn-

ing after the massacre in Nice, and acting prime minister Mariano Rajoy said the country will ensure its authorities are increasingly more united in the face of the global threat. Rajoy stressed that Spain's record to date in thwarting attacks and nipping DAESH networks on home territory in the bud has been crucial so far to Spain's safety.

Gored Again

Another spectator has died at a bull-running - this time, a 45-year-old woman in the Murcia region town of Moratalla. She had been watching the young cows being released as a prelude to the bulls being let loose, when one of them knocked her over and gored her in the abdomen. This sparked severe internal bleeding, which led to her death a few

hours later in hospital. Witnesses say she had been standing on the street before the cow-runs started, and was not able to get behind the barriers in time when they were let loose. Murcia government spokeswoman Noelia Arroyo passed on her condolences to the woman's family, and her well wishes to two other spectators who were seriously injured.

Drop The Pilot

No Shame A 17-year-old Romanian teenager who knocked at the door of an elderly woman in Murcia City and then robbed and assaulted her, has been arrested by the National Police after spending time out of Spain. The youth struck in

September last year when he asked the 80-year-old lady if he could borrow some salt and spices, and then as she let him in, the teenager thumped her in the chest, and then he held her captive for two hours threatening her with a knife. The young rob-

ber eventually left with money and jewellery, and authorities worked out that he was a friend of the victim's granddaughter. He fled the country before recently returning to face the music, with two counts of theft and illegal detention on the table.

Not Over Yet

Pilots at Spanish airline Air Europa have called a strike for between Saturday July 30th and Tuesday August 2nd over grievances including the outsourcing of part of their fleet to another airline, Aernova. The pilots union Sepla said that their members

would run "minimum" services for the duration of the strike. Other complaints include alleged discrimination against pilots who have called for their rights to be respected, as well as "arbitrarily" adjusted work schedules, the union said.

Tunnel Vision The Spanish state prosecutor will appeal a recent court judgement to reject criminal charges in a case brought on behalf of Brazilian third-party investors DIS who claim they were cut out of soccer star Neymar's summer 2013 transfer to Barcelona. Audiencia Nacional judge Jose de la Mata was hearing the case and heard that the investment company had thought they owned 40 percent of the emerging superstar's rights when he was a Santos player but received less than 10 percent of the almost €100 million which Barca paid to sign the Brazil captain. Now prosecutor Jose Perals has appealed against that judgement, saying that the 2013 deal "included behaviour which was clearly criminal which must be judged in a trial."

Two Japanese tourists had to be rescued by police last Saturday after they walked into a Barcelona road tunnel whilst they were playing Pokémon Go, the smartphone-based version of the classic 1990s game, with many players already taking photos at various sites across Spain and downloading them to social media networks like Facebook. The police thought the pair were lost because they were staring intently at a tablet and mobile phone as if look-

ing for a way out of the Rovira tunnel, a 1,270 metre-long tunnel in which pedestrians and cyclists are forbidden. But when they stopped the two tourists at around, they discovered they were in fact “hunting Pokémon” on the new game Pokémon Go. The man and woman were escorted out by police, who told them they could not walk through because of the danger posed by the vehicles travelling at high speeds through the tunnel.

Hot Stuff Northern Costa Blanca hotel customers using a sauna got an experience they didn't bargain for last week, when the high temperature facility caught fire. The incident happened at an unspecified location in Altea with two sauna users treated for mild smoke inhalation.

Dates Of Decision

Thursday August 2nd is being pencilled in as the showdown date for a parliamentary debate on the viability of any government formed by caretaker Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and his Partido Popular colleagues, according to his deputy. The news comes on the back of June's indecisive election result, following on from December's stalemate vote. The PP has been negotiating with other parties over forming a viable coalition that would be subject to a parliamentary vote of confidence before it could take office. A date of August 2nd to start the parliamentary debate leading up to the vote "is reasonable and doable, but it also depends

on the will and capacity of everyone to reach an agreement," acting Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria said. The vote of confidence would then take place on August 3rd. Under rules set out in the Spanish Constitution, if Rajoy fails to obtain an absolute majority of 176 seats then a second vote would take place on August 5th. In this second vote, Rajoy would become prime minister by winning a simple majority. The PP, which managed to increase its share of votes on June 26th but again fell far short of a parliamentary majority, needs support from its long-time foe, the second-placed Socialist PSOE, or a whole

Debts Fall

Spanish banks' problem loans fell in May, marking the 18th straight month that they have dropped after a statebacked clean-up of the banking sector. Spain's banking overhaul followed a 2008 property crash and recession and

included bailing out several banks with European cash and the creation of a socalled bad bank three years ago to take on their most toxic assets. Spanish banks' bad debts as a percentage of total credit in the system fell to

cluster of smaller parties. But Socialist leader Pedro Sanchez said his party's would vote against a government led by the PP, potentially extending the seven-month deadlock, with the centrist Ciudadanos party saying that they plan to abstain. If negotiations fail again, Spain could face a third election in a year. The Partido Popular did though manage to have its candidate for speaker of the parliament speaker, Ana Pastor, elected on Tuesday thanks to the backing of Ciudadanos. Pastor will now liaise with King Felipe who is expected to begin meeting party leaders next week prior to calling on one to try to form a government.

9.8 percent from 9.9 percent in May and 11.4 percent a year ago, data from the Bank of Spain showed on Monday. Those debts include non-performing loans left unpaid for 90 days as well as borrowings in danger of falling into default.

Teacher’s Pet An angry Alicante Province mother who slapped her daughter's teacher in the face has been given a three-month prison sentence after a plea deal. The incident happened five years ago at Aspe with foul language being used against the male teacher by both the mother and daughter in a row over her being suspended.

Triple Tragedy

Three Bulgarian women who were working as strawberry pickers in Spain, died in a road accident last Thursday afternoon. The incident occurred on a motorway 120 kilometres from Madrid as the women were returning from work, with three minibuses and one car taking a group of workers back to their accommodation in the town of Avila. One of the minibuses was hit by a truck upon entering the motorway. Two of the Bulgarians, both aged 39, died on the spot. The other passed away later in hospital.

The teacher ended up being slapped before the angry duo trooped off home, and the court awarded him 210 euros in compensation due to suffering some minor facial and eye injuries. At an earlier stage of the lengthy legal process, the mother had actually denied hitting the teacher.

Speedy Sail To Tabarca A company that has run a tourist link between Tabarca island and Alicante City for half a century has launched a brand-new catamaran. Kontiki V is owned and operated by Cruceros Kontiki and was officially used for the first time last Saturday as part of Alicante's Virgen del Carmen fiesta celebrations. The new high speed boat can accommodate 150 passengers.

Less Jellyfish Stings Fewer people were stung by jellyfish at Santa Pola's beaches last month compared to a year earlier according to Cruz Roja figures. 542 incidents were reported in June as opposed to 680 in the same month last year across the area. The Cruz Roja put the fall down to cooler sea waters and also a greater awareness of jellyfish dangers amongst swimmers.

Animal Move

Alicante Provincial Council says they want to reduce the number of abandoned pets across the area, with local animal charities putting the figure at around eight thousand a year. Spain itself has the highest number of abandoned animals across the European Union, standing at 400 thousand per annum. Council President, César Sánchez, met with representatives from animal groups and shelters, including Asoka,

to launch a new initiative called "Quererle te hace grande. Piénsalo bien" translated as "Loving you makes you great. Think about it". He wants the groups to work even closer with local authorities to deal with the problem with Sánchez adding that the Provincial Council wanted to deal with animal abuse as well issues of abandonment, and that they are happy to host future meetings to discuss and the issue.

Barrier Breaker The first-ever firewoman has joined the provincial brigade in Valencia - a force which, like many in Spain, had hitherto been all-male. Patricia Sorana is one of 36 new members who managed to gain a place in the Valencia force after completing her final exams and training. Patricia firstly studied to be a school teacher but a friend inspired her to become a firefighter some ten years ago. "Sometimes I feel a bit of a weirdo in a man's world, but

Something Amiss

A forgetful pensioner accidentally left his wife in an airport and jetted off to the Costa Blanca on holiday without her, only realising he had left her behind when he landed at AlicanteElche airport. Maurice Hunter, 80, from Plumstead in south London, thought wife Carolyn, 70, had already boarded the plane at Stansted Airport while he popped to the toilets. The couple had booked separate seats on the Ryanair

flight to El Altet as Mr Hunter, who is six foot four inches tall, wanted extra leg room. Mr Hunter said after he boarded the flight he even waved at a woman he thought was his wife before settling in. But when the plane landed and all of the passengers began to disembark at Alicante-Elche airport, Mr Hunter began to worry when he could not see his wife of 47 years. He told The Sun: “When I asked an airport official

where my wife was and if she was OK, he told me she was fine, but back in London. I couldn't believe it.” Mr Hunter, who is diabetic, then had to turn round and head home less than an hour after landing in Spain as his wife had all of his medication. The couple, who had planned the holiday to celebrate Mr Hunter's birthday, ended up spending the week at their caravan in Whitstable in Kent instead.

Senseless Killing I'm a fire-fighter like any of my colleagues and I'm trained to do the job," she said.

A 35-year-old Belgian man has been given 25 years behind bars for killing a 27 –year old Danish woman in a Madrid flat where he was a caretaker, and then setting her body

on fire. Dave Verbist, 35, pled guilty and told the court how he had entered the 27-yearold’s Ane Strande Jensen’s apartment, crept into her bedroom and strangled her

with the cable of a charger while she slept back in June 2014. He said he wanted to “apologise to the family of his victim” and admitted that every day he “tried to make sense of his crime” During the trial he confessed that to only vaguely remembering killing her when he was on a cocktail of drink and drugs and had “no idea why I did it. I am angry with myself.” His victim had only arrived in Madrid 11 days earlier to take up a job with the Scandinavian Tobacco Group and was renting a fully-furnished holiday apartment while she searched for her own more permanent accommodation.

Four Becomes Three Orihuela council backed out last week, with just minutes remaining, in joining neighbouring coastal administrations, Guardamar, Pilar de la Horadada, and Torrevieja in signing a new agreement to jointly work on economic initiatives to boost jobs, to reduce poverty, and improve the local economy with a special emphasis on tourism. Orihuela's Partido Popular mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, notified his counterparts half an hour before the signing ceremony that he was not happy with the draft document and "discrepancies"

over a number of issues. The other mayors, José Manuel Dolón (Torrevieja), Ignacio Ramos (Pilar) and

José Luis Sáez (Guardamar) still proceeded to put pen to paper without Orihuela's participation.

Councils Fined

Ten councils within the Vega Baja region are set to be fined by Spain's Finance Ministry for not paying their contractors and suppliers within the legal limit of 30 days, and therefore have not been able to submit

their appropriate tax payments on time. Daya Vieja, Bigastro, Callosa, Benijófar, Albatera, Redován, Rafal, Benferri, Orihuela and Algorfa have been named as offenders with the small Daya Vieja

council having the worst figures as it takes them an average of 239 days to pay to suppliers, with Orihuela standing at 105 days, whilst Algorfa stands at just over the permitted level at 30.49 days.

It Should Never Have Happened If anyone had any doubt that Brexit was best for Britain, then last week’s atrocity in Nice was the perfect reason. This deranged man was a Tunisian but living in France with a European passport. He had a criminal record with a conviction for violence. His neighbours told investigators he was "strange" and his father said

his son had suffered mental problems. This man could so easily have travelled to Britain and wreaked havoc, driving a lorry into crowds at some event or other. Under the open borders “Schengen procedure which the EU are fixated upon (and which the UK refused to sign up to) there is no stopping someone travelling to another

European country with evil intent. It is so easy to get into a lorry and use it as a lethal weapon - perhaps more effective than firearms if it is aimed at crowds perhaps leaving a top football or rugby match, or a protest march targets are limitless, it could happen wherever a large number of people gather.

At least in France, police carry guns and although it took time to shoot the deranged driver dead, just think what carnage could be carried out in Britain with police practically defenceless. In past comments I have said how vital it now is to watch out for people with serious mental illness. We cannot any longer afford the lux-

in Britain. The UK has always been and always will be open for business and I would like to see, the minute that Britain exits the EU, all the other trade deals around the world kicking in. It's my guess that if that happens there will be several if not a majority of EU countries that will also want to do business with us. Our message to them should be...come on in - we will trade with anyone, but that does not mean we will give passports to everyone. That must be

made abundantly clear. The chances are that in a few years time all but a few countries will be trading openly with Britain, leaving the annoying few difficult troublemakers in the EU (and we know who they are) isolated and on their own and serves them right. Go for it Theresa May! Oh, and by the way, in the meantime, let's hear a total and clear commitment from you, Theresa, that you will look after all UK ex-pats wherever they are, ring-fenc-

ed back to Tunisia once he left jail with his passport revoked. When in prison, the authorities should have given him a full assessment and no doubt would have concluded he was not the full shilling. And should a person with mental instability have a job as a lorry driver in control of a lethal weapon? Of course not.

Jolly Blighty

Thanks Cobbers! What wonderful news Australia wants a free trade deal with Britain as soon as it is able to do so - which means as soon as Britain escapes the shackles of the EU. This is exactly what I predicted would happen in my column pre the Brexit vote and I have no doubt that many other Commonwealth and other countries will also line up to do business with Britain. It is a shame that Cameron and Osborne did not have as much confidence

ury of continuing the "care in the community" policy for such people. As for France, there was much that could have been done to prevent such at atrocity. No wonder that the prime minister got booed at during a memorial ceremony on Monday. Firstly, the lorry driver was a foreigner who had a criminal record. He should have been deport-

ing state pensions; ensuring health arrangements remain intact, and negotiating with the EU that ex-pats can have joint passports which are recognised in Britain and within EU countries. Britain will be negotiating from a position of strength and we should never forget it - and the Scots would do well to remember that too. If the Scots think they are better off in Europe than within the United Kingdom they are in cloud cuckoo land.

We've been in the UK a month now and are saddened with what we see. Years of austerity and lack of investment have taken their toll and the country now looks very sad. Traffic jams are worse than ever whilst trunk routes are neglected with no grass cutting taking palce with high weeds obliterating important road signs. On the A27 near Worthing, replacement street lighting work started last year and is still going on now, whilst some road surfaces are

an absolute disgrace. The NHS is becoming very worrying, with waiting now two weeks for non-urgent cases. But there could be worse to come. That's because the government has failed to keep pace with the increased need for fresh water, dealing with sewage treatment, and electricity supplies. Instead of cracking on with nuclear power plants it has become too reliant on wind and solar power generation. It's getting serious!

All Go

The Ministry of Public Works has finally given the green light to putting an extra third lane on the A-7 motorway between the link with the AP-7 at Crevillente south to the CV-870 for Orihuela. The project has been on the table for three years and the tender budget for the work has been quoted at over 81m euros.

Foodie Treat

Torrevieja is to host the first ever GastroVegaBaja food fair this September, which will celebrate local cuisine and the wide variety of restaurants in the area. To this end, the Valencia Tourist Agency boss, Francesc Colomer, has signed a deal with the Torrevieja area hoteliers and hospitality association president, Joaquín Guillamo, which will see both groups co-operating together over tourist initiatives in the area, with a 22 thousand euro grant being given to promote the GastroVegaBaja event. Colomer and Guillamo said that "the agreement reflects the commitment of the Valencian Government to back up the advertising campaigns that are being created by the Torrevieja hoteliers and hospitality association for September’s GastroVegaBaja fair.

Drowning Inquest A Basingstoke inquest heard last Friday how a British mother drowned while swimming at an Orihuela Costa beach whilst on holiday with her husband last month. Julie Dudhill, 57, a project manager from Fleet, Hampshire, was swept out to sea after drifting away just yards from her husband, Andy, in the water on Monday June 27th. They had travelled up the coast from where they were staying at San Pedro del Pinatar. Realising his wife was in danger, Mr Dudhill swam back to shore in order to get lifeguards to come in to save her. Mrs Dudhill’s body was brought ashore to La Glea beach, Campoamor,

where she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her cause of death was confirmed by the coroner as asphyxia by drowning and the inquest was adjourned until October and Mrs Dudhill’s son did not want to comment on the

circumstances of his mother’s death. As previously reported by The Courier, red flags had been flying in the area because of the strong currents and the couple had been earlier hailed by lifeguards to get out of the water.

Pola Concerns Santa Pola's shop owners and market traders want an urgent meeting with the mayor, Yolanda Seva, over pedestrianisation plans for the town centre, which they feel could badly hurt their businesses. Pepa Garri from the local traders association told the Informacion newspaper that passing trade would be reduced if cars didn't have the kind of access that they have now and that customers would simply go elsewhere.

Short On Facts

Alicante Province and the Murcia region are amongst the main areas of Spain which could suffer the most when the UK quits the European Union, according claims made by the latest 'Impact on Spain’ report from BBVA Research. The news from the bank comes hardly as a surprise due to the high number of British people in the area, as well as having the highest number of British people buying homes anywhere in mainland Spain. But the report is heavily dependent on speculation with no future facts and deals to go on and appears to be very pessimistic.

Concerns were raised by BBVA Research over the high level of fruit and vegetable exports to the United Kingdom, as well as a fear that British tourists, who dominate the tourist market, might choose to shun the area because of lower exchange rates. Rates though are only at the same level that they were two years ago, and with formal trade and legal negotiations yet to start between the UK and EU when article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty is triggered (probably at the start of 2017), the BBVA report looks to be short on substance.

Speedy Brits On Boat

A motorboat driven by two British people has been reported to maritime authorities after it sped recklessly from La Marina to Arenales del Sol, forcing a two-man rowing boat to capsize. Elche local police started a high speed pursuit on Sunday before catching the motorboat and reporting it to the Alicante Maritime Authority. The kayak victims were unharmed.

Mayor Visitación Martínez said that the new service could be used for anything like adopting pets though to ideas and complaints. The app is available to download for free at Apple Store and Android Market.

Truly Fingered

A high tech fingerprint identification system has enabled the Guardia Civil to arrest a man for trying to rob a Guardamar supermarket in July 2013. The 40-year-old Spaniard waved a fake gun at the cashier and started to panic by pressing keys on the cash register which would not open and he fled

empty handed. After a painstaking process of looking at the prints left on the register via AFIS (Automatic Fingerprint Identification System), authorities found a match with the man already on the system. He's been charged with attempted robbery via intimidation.

Tidy Up Call

The opposition Partido Popular says that Quesada’s roads and paths are not being maintained properly by the PSOE-controlled Rojales council, with claims that summer visitors are complaining about the state of the area. The PP say that the local population triples at this time of the year, yet the administration of mayor

Antonio Pérez is not doing enough to keep things spic and span. The PP claim that footpaths are blighted by weeds and overgrown tree branches and hedges whilst the roads have an increasing number of potholes, in addition to access steps to pedestrian crossings and playgrounds being in a poor condition.

Poverty Shocker

Anniversary Honour

The longest serving mayor in the Vega Baja region, José Manuel Butron, has belatedly received a specially framed certificate commemorating his 25 years at the helm of Los Montesinos. It was presented at a ceremony to the mayor by Alicante Provincial Council president, César

Sánchez, on a visit to the town. PSOE mayor, Butron, became the municipality's first mayor in October 1990 after the area gained the right to run its own affairs after previously being part of Almoradi. The mayor in turn presented Sánchez with a couple of local history

books; a commemorative CD; and a 25th anniversary plate. Meanwhile Butron has asked local residents to support the 26th anniversary celebrations which will culminate in the crowning of the queen in the main square on Saturday July 30th.

Better Access

43 percent of the population of the Vega Baja is at risk of poverty and social exclusion, according to figures produced by the Valencian Statistics Institute. The Vega Baja, which takes

in centres like Torrevieja and Orihuela, is the worst affected part of the Valencia region, with the figures compiled by looking at the quality of housing and whether people have a job.

A twice daily shuttle van service has been launched in Torrevieja to help disabled

and elderly people enjoy the assisted swimming facilities at Playa Los Locos. The van

will pick up from Torrevieja addresses at noon and 4.00 pm, returning after two hours. Reservations can be made by calling 647 599 624. Beaches councillor Javier Manzanares said that assisted facilities are also available at Paseo de Juan Aparicio and Playa Náufragos, and that two new temporary walkways linking to shower and toilet facilites have been put in at San Roque for the summer season.

Plenty To Ponder Concerned British residents had their chance to ask questions and state their views in the light of the recent Brexit vote at a special forum on Tuesday. The UK’s deputy ambassador to Spain, Tim Hemmings, and Alicante Consul, Sarah-Jane Morris, attended the session in Alicante City, and promised to keep residents briefed over developments concerning Britain’s eventual exit from the European Union. Local government officials, hoteliers and legal specialists spoke to the recently appointed Mr Hemmings about the key issues facing British nationals in Spain after the Brexit vote, with the forum also hearing the views of local English speaking associations. The deputy ambassador emphasised the strong trade and investment links between the UK and Spain, and said that the UK’s relationship with Spain would remain close after the Britain’s exit from the EU. Alicante Consul SarahJane Morris added, “We are committed to listening to the concerns of British nationals and to keep them up-to-date with any changes as we negotiate our EU exit”.

Summer Help Appeal

Summer is always a difficult time for all charities because many volunteers leave Spain and return when the weather cools down in the autumn, and APAH (Asociacion Protectora De Animales Horadada) is no exception. This means that they are seriously struggling to care for the dogs in their kennels because of a serious shortage of helpers. Reluctantly they have had to make the decision not to accept any more dogs and cats for the foreseeable future. It isn't a lack of funds or space that has caused this, but a lack of helpers. They need urgently need more volunteers right now to help carry on their important work during the summer high season. APAH are after anybody who can give a couple of hours either in the morning or in the evening, and the charity says that it would

make a huge difference to the few people that are around at this time of the year who are trying to look after the animals. All of the APAH dogs are micro-chipped, vaccinated and neutered (when old enough), and every one that is rescued by the charity is never euthanised, unless they are advised by a vet that they have no other option. If a rescued animal cannot find a new home, then as long as APAH exists, it will always be looked after by the charity, which so far has re-homed up to two thousand cats and dogs. If you can spare some time to help out a very overworked team, then you can get in touch with APAH on 630 422 563, 616 210 850 or call into their Charity Shop in Pilar on a weekday morning between 10.00 am and 1.30 pm (phone number:- 966 766 555).

My Dog Is Losing Hair Most dogs shed hair, especially during these hot Spanish summer months, but a dog losing hair in massive amounts or with bald spots could mean something more serious such as allergies, hormonal imbalance, mites, trauma or infection. While it’s normal for most dogs to shed at some point throughout the year, if large clumps of dull hair or fur fall out easily or if your dog’s fur is thinning to the point where you can see his or her skin, this is a sign of excessive hair loss.Although a dog losing hair can arise from a serious condition, this isn’t always the case. In fact, most dog hair loss happens as a result of highly treatable conditions, with experts saying that allergies are often the main cause.HAIR LOSS CAN BE CAUSED BY:Mange Mites responsible for mange can take over your dog’s fur and cause patchy hair loss. Mange causes skin scaliness that will make your dog itch excessively. This itching leads to

hair loss if severe enough.Trauma Hair loss caused by trauma most often occurs as a result of a dog chronically licking her own fur. This condition, called acral lick dermatitis, damages the hair follicle and leads to hair loss. Trauma can also happen as a secondary reaction from an injury.

out pus, scaling, redness and hot spots. Hormonal Imbalance Many hormonal imbalances can lead to hair loss in dogs. Thyroid disorders, pituitary dwarfism and adrenal gland deficiency can all cause

Allergies Dogs can have allergies to certain foods, fleas and chemicals found in skin care products. Certain dog breeds are more susceptible to allergies, such as golden retrievers, bulldogs and Yorkshire terriers. Hair loss stemming from allergies leads to redness on the skin, itching, hot spots and bumps. Infection Different infections can cause dog hair loss, including ringworm, folliculitis and cancer. With infection-related hair loss, you might notice nodules with or with-

progressive hair loss. SOLVING THE PROBLEM Treatment for your dog’s hair loss will depend on the cause, so make sure to check with your vet before treating your pet! Use Antibiotics Your vet may prescribe antibiotics to treat any infections causing your dog to lose hair. Your vet may need to remove any associated nodules or tumours contributing to hair loss, and potentially treat your dog with antibiotics as well as other medications for the illness.

Change Your Dog’s Diet If your vet thinks that your dog’s hair loss is caused by a food allergy, eliminate the food in question from his diet. The most common food allergies in dogs include wheat, corn, soy, eggs and even beef or chicken. Undergo a Hormone Treatment If your dog has a hormone imbalance, supplements can stop further hair loss and may actually help your dog regrow hair. Use Hydrocortisone Shampoos and Sprays Treat excessive licking and soothe itchy skin by bathing your dog with a dog-specific shampoo that contains hydrocortisone. The hydrocortisone will calm irritated skin can promote speedy healing. You can also use a hydrocortisone spray applied directly to specific itchy or hot spots. Avoid using human shampoos and hair products on your dog, since they often contain ingredients that can seriously irritate your dog’s skin.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

Summertime is rarely good for new UK TV drama (as I wrote a fortnight ago), so even when ITV’s Brief Encounters appeared recently, it looked almost respectable amongst the meagre crumbs of new drama that we are presented with at the moment. So, thank heavens to the BBC for pulling a goodie off the shelf last Sunday in the first of a three part mini-series, The Secret Agent, based on a Joseph Conrad novel. To be fair, not all new UK drama is dross during the summer, as fans of Channel Four’s brilliant

Cloak But No Dagger Agent

Humans can vouch for last year, and didn’t a little BBC show called Sherlock start in the warm season a few years ago? But these are exceptions to the norm. By the way, Toby Jones is going to be one of the baddies in the new run of Sherlock that’s shooting right now, whilst I’m not quite certain what he is in a very enjoyable adaption of Conrad’s book. It’s set in Victorian London, as Jones plays a guy who is working for the imperalist Russian Embassy (besides running a seedy Soho store) to stop loony left anarchists causing

bother, but the boys of the Met are onto him, and with a family to look after, what is Jones’s character going to do? Where do his loyalities lie? The dilemma is painted all over his face, as yet again Toby Jones shows us why he is so much in demand on the small and big screen. He really can act and has that skill, as we saw in The Detectorists, of deadpan comedy through to larger than life roles, including villains! Part of the treat of The Secret Agent besides Jones and a well-conceived script/story is the rest of the cast featuring the likes of Vicky McClure (back now on the set of Line of Duty) and a fellow co-star of the excellent “This is England”, Stephen Graham, who I last saw getting seriously nasty as Al Capone in Boardwalk Empire. As a fan of Joseph Conrad, it’s one of his books that I never read, so I can’t wait to see what happens in a superior drama that as far as the current schedules go, really is a diamond in the rough. I had little expectation of a new NBC drama series that

Sky Living is screening called Shades of Blue, mainly because Jennifer Lopez is one of the stars. There was a time over 15 years ago that we were sick of the sight of her and her diva ego exploding everywhere, but then she changed big-time and became a popular judge on American Idol and started getting to grips with some decent acting offers on the big screen, as opposed to the trash she turned out with exlover Ben Affleck. I still went ionto Shades of Blue with some trepidation, but two episodes in, I’m loving it, and J-Lo is great in it. She’s a New York detective that’s part of a police crew led by Ray Liotta (great as well) who are bent and on the take from crooks, but they do have a better crime solving rate than anybody else. The FBI catch J-Lo in a pay-off sting and then get her to start spying on the rest of her team to avoid jail, and she’s not a happy bunny. Now read on, as they say, and though this is not the gritty stuff of the best” bent cop show ever”, The Shield, this is

still good and NBC have backed it with a 13-episode renewal for next summer. An impressive surprise. Have a spin round on your satellite TV system and see if you can find Tru TV, because once again this year, it is the UK home for America’s Got Talent, with transmission just a few days behind the States, and Simon “no longer nasty” Cowell joining the judges this time round. I love BGT but prefer the American version because there is more air time for the acts, and there is so much more variety with a far higher standard (for understandable size reasons) and far more laughs compared to

what the UK can produce. I like ITV Encore as a channel where you can reassess a recent drama, and I’m doing that with Marcella starring Anna Friel. My first viewing earlier this year left me unimpressed with an “up in the air” finale to frustrate viewers. This time round, I’m enjoying it a lot more, but it still doesn’t hold a candle to creator Hans Rosenfeldt big Scandi project The Bridge, with series four currently being written. Friel is great in Marcella but the fact that ITV are still dithering over a renewal suggests that the new bosses there were also a wee bit disappointed in the show.

In the second episode, as Leanne confronts the unsuspecting dad, he is shellshocked at the news. The row escalates when he rounds on her, calling her irresponsible. Leanne assures him that

she doesn’t want any money and doesn’t expect him to play any part in their child’s life. He is horrified to realise she intends to keep the baby. Leanne explains to the father how this could be her last chance to have a child. Despondent, he is forced to agree. Meanwhile, Sally’s party guests search in vain for the Mayor’s dog. Sally blames Yasmeen, pointing out that if she hadn’t barged her way in, the dog wouldn’t be missing. In Eastenders, Lee arranges a doctor’s appointment for Whitney, but he tells his family that

they want to keep the pregnancy news quiet for the time being. However, the pressure grows for Lee when Lauren warns him that she knows what happened with Abi. Word of Whitney’s pregnancy soon starts to spread despite Lee’s wishes. By the time Whitney and Lee return from the doctor’s, Shirley, Tina and Patrick are already having celebratory drinks.

½ tsp chilli flakes 1 garlic clove, crushed Finely grated zest of

1

unwaxed lime 100g salted butter Fine sea salt 4 sweetcorn cobs in their husks. METHOD Preheat the barbecue for direct grilling. Soak the chillies in boiling water for 10 minutes until soft, then drain and leave to cool. Chop finely and put in the bowl with chilli flakes, garlic, lime zest and butter. Beat together until smooth. Bring a large pan of water to

the boil, throw in some sea salt and add the sweetcorn – cook for 5 minutes and then drain. Remove the grill rack and cook the sweetcorn on the coals for 10 minutes, turning regularly. Remove from the heat and when cool enough to handle peel away the charred husks. Serve with the smoked-chilli butter. Note: If you’re using a gas barbecue, or prefer not to cook directly on the coals, the sweetcorn will need an extra 5 minutes of cooking.

Why happy cows make better cheese Watching the dairy herd amble into the milking parlour at Goodwood Home Farm, it’s clear that these are no ordinary cows. Unlike the usual “black-and-whites” (farmer-speak for the highyielding Holstein Friesian

cattle or the smaller, more robust British Friesians) these dairy shorthorns have auburn coats as glossy as the chestnut horses in the Stubbs paintings at Goodwood House. But more significantly, the

animals have small, comfortable-looking udders, not the huge, distended milk sacs that I’m used to seeing when I visit dairy farms. Nor, says farm manager Tim Hassell, are these cows milking machines designed to make “white water”, the low-nutrient commodity milk commonly produced to meet the prices demanded by large retailers. “We aren’t looking for 10,000 litres a year each like you would off a Holstein,” he says. Instead their yield is just over half that, but with higher protein and butterfat content. Goodwood is no ordinary

farm. The West Sussex estate has a reputation that is more Bertie Wooster t h a n Brian

Aldridge, based on fast horses, flashy cars and fine living. At the end of July, the

home of the Duke and Duchess of Richmond and their son the Earl of March, who runs the estate, hosts Glorious Goodwood, a highlight of the flat racing season. The Festival of Speed earlier this month attracted more than 100,000 visitors to watch supercharged sports cars negotiate the hill course, while Goodwood Revival in September is all about classic motors and vintage style. In fact, Goodwood Home

Farm is the one of the largest lowland organic farms in the country. Although it achieved full organic status only in 2004, the Duchess of Richmond, now 83, joined the Soil Association 50 years ago, inspired by Silent Spring, written by conservationist Rachel Carson and published in 1962. “Both the duke and duchess are remarkable,” says Patrick Holden, chairman of the Sustainable Food Trust. “Their work was pioneering.” Now the farm includes beef cattle, sheep and pigs as well as the dairy herd.

Mackerel is transformed by this curing technique – a method the Portuguese used to transport fish during long travels – and by serving with cherries marinated in soy and sherry vinegar. It’s so simple but also so delicious. (serves 4) 1 whole fresh mackerel, gutted, filleted and pinboned 60g caster sugar 20g fine sea salt 250g fresh cherries, stoned and halved 2 tbsp sherry vinegar

1 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp grapeseed oil 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil Bunch of sorrel (wild, if possible) In a bowl, mix the salt and sugar and spread half of the mix in a small, shallow tray. Place the mackerel fillets on the tray skinside down and cover the flesh side with the rest of mix. Let it sit at room temperature for 45 minutes to cure, then remove the fillets, wash them under cold running water and pat them dry. Trim the fish, separate each

fillet into two long pieces and refrigerate. Toss the cherries with the vinegar and soy sauce and set aside, so the fruit juices are released into the marinade. After at least 20 minutes, brush the fillets with the grapeseed oil, and grill in a hot pan skinside up for 30 seconds. Remove and transfer to a serving plate with the cherries and juices. Spoon a generous amount of the olive oil and scatter with the sorrel as you serve.

What to cook this week: Perfect Moussaka recipe

Andalusian-style chicken

Luscious layers: serve succulent lamb, aubergine and sheep’s milk cheese moussaka with a crisp salad, or straight out of the baking dish

SERVES 6: INGREDIENTS For the lamb sauce: 500g lamb mince, 1 large onion, finely diced, 1 large carrot, finely diced, 1 large celery stick, finely diced, 1 large clove garlic, crushed, Pinch of dried chilli flakes, 250g cherry tomatoes, blitzed to a purée. 1 tbsp tomato purée, 1 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp Worcester sauce, 2 sprigs oregano or thyme. Approx 500ml milk , 50g butter, Lemon juice, to

taste For the white sauce: 500ml double cream, Freshly grated nutmeg, 100g sheep’s milk cheese, grated Parlick Fell. For the aubergine: 1 large aubergine, sliced into circles very thinly. Olive oil, for frying METHOD Make the lamb sauce in a large frying pan so that it will reduce more quickly. Brown the lamb mince over a medium-high heat then

set aside on a plate.   Without cleaning the pan, fry the diced vegetables in the lamb fat (this will deglaze the pan) with a pinch of salt, until they are soft – about 10 minutes. Add the garlic and dried chilli and fry for one minute.   Add the blitzed cherry tomatoes, tomato purée and another pinch of salt. Stir to deglaze again and cook until most of the liquid has evaporated.   Add the lamb back in, along with the soy, Worcester sauce and oregano or thyme leaves. Just cover with milk and bring to the boil then simmer until the sauce has reduced completely. Stir in the butter and season to taste with salt, pepper and lemon juice. Set aside.   Bring the cream to the boil in a saucepan and simmer for two minutes to slightly thicken. Take off the heat and add a bit of grated

nutmeg to taste, then stir in the grated cheese. Set aside. In a hot frying pan, fry the aubergine slices one or two at a time in a tiny bit of oil, until they are golden brown on both sides and properly cooked through. Season lightly and remove to a wire rack when done. Dab with kitchen paper to remove any excess moisture. Preheat the oven to 150C/300F/Gas 2.   Assemble the moussaka in a 23cm x 15cm x 5cm baking dish. Put a layer of aubergine slices on the bottom. Cover with half the lamb and then half the cheese sauce. Repeat the layers with the remaining aubergine, lamb and cheese sauce. Finish with a bit of grated cheese. Bake for 35-45 minutes until the top is golden brown and bubbly. Leave for 15 minutes and cooled slightly before serving.

Ingredients large pinch of saffron, ½ chicken stock cube, crumbled into 100ml boiling water, 2 tbsp olive oil, 1 small onio, thinly sliced, 2 large chicken breasts or 6 boneless, skinless thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces. large pinch of ground cinnamon, 1 red chilli, deseeded and chopped, 2 tbsp sherry vinegar, 1 tbsp clear honey, 6 cherry tomatoes, quartered, 1 tbsp raisins, handful of coriander, roughly chopped, 25g toasted pine nuts or almonds, crusty bread, to serve. Method Add the saffron to the

hot stock to soak. Heat the oil in a medium pan and cook the onion until it is soft and just beginning to turn golden. Push to the side of the pan and add the chicken. Cook for a few mins until the chicken is browned all over. Add the cinnamon and chilli, and cook for a couple of mins. Add the stock, vinegar, honey, tomatoes and raisins. Bring to the boil, turn down the heat and simmer for 10 mins until the sauce is reduced and the chicken is cooked through. When ready to serve, scatter with the coriander and nuts, and serve with bread on the side.

Skewered chicken marinated in lemon, parsley and garlic Use chicken thighs and not breast to make sure your meat remains moist People tend to use chicken breasts for kebabs, which look neater, but they’re not as tasty as thighs (and breast meat dries out on barbecues). You can also fry the thighs whole. MAKES 6 skewers INGREDIENTS 1 large onion, peeled and quartered, Juice and finely grated zest of 2 unwaxed lemons, 4 cloves garlic, chopped, 80ml olive oil, 1 small bunch flat-leaf parsley, stalks included, 600g chicken thigh fillets METHOD Put everything except the chicken into a food processor, season and blitz to a rough purée. Put the chicken fillets in a bowl and pour over the purée. Cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for at least an an hour, or overnight. If you are using wooden skewers, soak them in water to prevent them from burning. Lift the chicken out of the marinade and cut the flesh into chunks (particularly thin bits of thigh may have to be folded over to form a chunk). Thread these on to the skewers and neaten the meat (little raggedy bits have a tendency to burn). Season all over and cook either on a barbecue or on a griddle pan, turning frequently using long tongs. Timing will depend on the heat of your barbecue, but on a griddle pan they take about eight minutes. Make sure the chicken is cooked through.

Garlic shrimp

Record Of The Week!

Yet another classic this week, chosen by TKO listerner Julie Matthews – and such a classic summer tune that everyone has enjoyed playing it. Julie said..... My record of the week, would be 'Lovely day' by Bill Withers. It takes me back to my youth. My primary school had an outdoor swimming pool which we were able to use in the summer hols. As soon as Pebble Mill at 1 had finished, Mum and I would head go the pool (we had sun in UK summers in the 70s) I hated sitting through Pebble Mill, wishing it would finish. Then, one day, Bill Withers was on the show. I was mesmerised, as he sang 'Lovely day'. The swimming pool was forgotten for those few minutes, as I sat transfixed. It was and still is, a wonderful song which has certainly stood the test of time. Quite right too Julie! This Record of The Week slot could be a wonderful opportunity for a sponsor too – imagine your name and business being promoted Live 5 times a day by the best presenters on the costas. THE INFILTRATOR REVIEW

DIRECTOR Brad Furman GENRE Biography, Crime, Drama SYNOPSIS The film is based on the true story of Robert Mazur, a federal customs and excise agent who lived the high life of Colombia's most powerful cartels while using his undercover alias "Bob Musella," all the while recording damning evidence that culminated in a major takedown at a staged wedding. RELEASE DATE 13 July 2016 (USA) DURATION 2h 7mins In some ways, Bryan Cranston’s character in “The Infiltrator” is an alternate version of Walter White, the good-guy-turned-rotten he

portrayed so magnetically in “Breaking Bad.” This seedy, drug-soaked thriller is based on a memoir by Robert Mazur (Mr. Cranston), a federal undercover agent who in 1986 posed as a high-rolling money launderer in a sting operation against Pablo Escobar’s Colombian drug cartel. Unlike Walter, Robert is a good guy who remains good when faced with temptation. The movie, filmed mostly around Tampa with jaunts to Miami, presents a sour portrait of 1980s Florida, awash in white powder and dirty cash during the go-go years of the cocaine trade. Directed by Brad Furman (“The Lincoln Lawyer, “The Take”) from a screenplay by

his mother, Ellen Brown Furman, it revisits the world of “Miami Vice,” minus the shiny glamour of that television hit. Under his alias, Bob Musella, Mr. Mazur arranged for the cartel’s excess cash to be funneled to the corrupt Bank of Credit and Commerce International, which collapsed in 1991. “The Infiltrator” has some of the ingredients of a Hollywood epic in the mode of “The Godfather” films but lacks their overarching historical vision. Robert is not a Shakespearean figure like Walter White, but the film at least grants him the moral stature of an incorruptible man risking his life in a dangerous job. “The Infiltrator” is still a good

yarn that, when it catches its breath, allows Mr. Cranston to convey the same ambivalence and cunning he brought to “Breaking Bad” and “All the Way,” the HBO biopic of President Lyndon B. Johnson adapted from the Broadway play that won Mr. Cranston a Tony for best actor. Even when playing a nice upstanding guy, Mr. Cranston’s approach is complicated. “The Infiltrator” goes out of its way to portray the cartel members with whom Robert consorts as crude, ugly sociopaths. The money neatly stacked in suitcases looks grubby, and the lap dances provided by strippers to Escobar’s thugs feel drab, mechanical and unsexy.

NHS hospitals borrowed record £2.8bn from government last year Contact@medb.es

Website: www.medb.es

St Bartholomew’s hospital in east London, whose trust got the biggest loan, £191.9m

The government had to lend cash-strapped hospitals a record £2.825bn in the last financial year so they could pay staff wages, energy bills and for drugs needed to treat patients. The Department of Health was forced to provide emergency bailouts on an unprecedented scale to twothirds of hospital trusts in the 2015-16 financial year because they were set to run out of money, the Guardian can reveal. Trusts in England were also loaned a further £530m for building projects and for new equipment such as scanners, bringing the total amount of additional funding provided during the year to £3.36bn, official NHS figures show. The huge scale of “working capital loans” given to hospi-

tals is disclosed in research undertaken by the House of Commons library on behalf of the Liberal Democrat health spokesman Norman Lamb. NHS finance experts backed the former health minister’s claim that the “astronomical” £2.825bn showed that hospitals were struggling because the service is receiving far less money than it needs. The money was shared between 109 of England’s 156 acute trusts and one mental health trust. Barts Health NHS trust in east London, the biggest trust and also the biggest overspender last year, received the biggest loan – £191.9m – on top of its expected £1.5bn annual budget. It posted a £135m deficit last year despite receiving the £191.9m. King’s College Hospital

NHS foundation trust in south London got the second largest amount – £145.8m – while a third trust in the capital, London North West Healthcare NHS trust, was given the third biggest loan, £125.3m. “These figures show the depth of the financial crisis within the NHS and the extent to which hospitals have become dependent on the Department of Health for emergency financial support to pay their staff and drug bills, and even to keep the lights on,” said Richard Murray, head of policy at the King’s Fund, the influential health thinktank. “The £2.825bn in loans is without precedent and underlines the unprecedented deterioration

one and 14 days after ingesting the bacteria and can last up to two weeks. Testing of samples from those who had fallen ill also indicated the strain of E coli 0157 was likely to have been imported, possibly from the Mediterranean. PHE officials said they had not ruled out other potential food sources for the outbreak, which has so far involved 144 cases in England, particularly the south-west, with six in Wales and one in Scotland. Two people have died and 62 people have needed hospital care. Isabel Oliver of PHE said the body was working with the Food Standards Agency to trace, sample and test salad

an astronomical sum. It reinforces the need for the government to confront this visible underfunding of the NHS. “This in effect endorses after-the-event colossal overspending by acute hospital trusts, which reinforces the injustice in spending between physical health on one hand and mental health and social care on the other. They lose out because we continue propping up acute hospitals, which is a broken system of healthcare,” Lamb added. Saffron Cordery, director of policy at NHS Providers, which represents NHS trusts, said: “The fact that some NHS trusts are having to ask for loans to make sure they can meet their day-to-day running costs, such as paying staff

Mixed salad leaves linked to E coli in UK

Health watchdogs have warned people to thoroughly wash mixed salad leaves after the food item appeared to be the source of an outbreak of E coli food poisoning that has so far infected 151 people in Britain, leaving two of them dead. Public Health England (PHE) said several of those affected were known to have eaten mixed salad, including rocket, before becoming unwell. Symptoms can include bloody diarrhoea, stomach cramps and occasionally fever. People usually notice signs of the illness three to four days after they have been infected, but symptoms can start any time between

in the NHS’s finances during 2015-16.” There are serious doubts as to whether NHS trusts, which ended last year £2.45bn in deficit despite an increase in the health budget, will be able to repay the £2.825bn they have borrowed. “Is it credible, given that most NHS trusts have been overspending, that trusts would ever be able to repay these loans? I think that’s highly unlikely,” said Murray. Lamb, a health minister in the team of the health secretary, Jeremy Hunt, in the coalition government until last year’s general election, said: “These bailouts demonstrate the impossible situation in the NHS’s finances. £2.825bn is

products grown in the UK and other parts of Europe. “All food sample results to date have been negative for E coli 0157, but it’s important to be aware that where food has been contaminated with E coli 0157, it is not always possible to identify the bacteria on food testing,” she said. From field to fork: the six stages of wasting food Read more A small number of wholesalers had also been told to stop adding some imported rocket leaves to their mixed salad products pending further investigations, Oliver said. Outbreaks of E coli 0157 poisoning are relatively rare compared with other food poisoning diseases. The bacterium is found in the gut of many animals, particularly cattle, and can contaminate food and water. PHE said people could help protect themselves from infection by washing their hands before handling food and eating, and by thoroughly washing vegetables and salads they were preparing to eat.

and utility bills, shows there is a fundamental mismatch between the money available to NHS trusts and what they are being asked to deliver. This widening need for loans is further evidence of increasing financial pressure that is beyond their control.” A Department of Health spokesman said: “We know finances are challenging for some parts of the NHS. That’s why we’re investing the £10bn it asked for in its own plan for the future – including almost £4bn this year – and we’re helping hospitals to reduce expensive temporary staff and achieve efficiencies. “Every year we provide – and publish the details of – some financial assistance to trusts for routine capital expenditure and working capital needs and to support those trusts in financial difficulty.” The disclosure of the £3.36bn comes at the start of a pivotal week for the health service in England. NHS bosses will later this week outline a radical and controversial plan, which is being overseen by the Treasury, to “reset” its finances, intended to start the painful process of stopping hospitals overspending.

A new look at COPD

COPD or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder is a blanket term for chronic disease of the lungs causing breathlessness, coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and other symptoms. Some healthcare professionals consider COPD to be a disease on its own while others see COPD as a combination of 2 chronic respiratory diseases: emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Either way, most people diagnosed with COPD will have signs of

chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Chronic bronchitis is the inflammation of the breathing tubes which causes thickening of the tubes and increased production of mucus that constricts the airways, making breathing more difficult. Emphysema occurs from the destruction of air sacs in the lungs which limits air exchange in the lungs. COPD usually occurs as a result of a combination of inflammation of the breathing tubes and the destruction of

the air sacs in the lungs. These changes create the symptoms seen in COPD. The cause of COPD is still debatable among healthcare experts. In general, COPD is seen as a disease of smokers and ex-smokers, but this assumption ignores the fact that a significant proportion of people with COPD have never smoked in their lives. Furthermore, dogs very frequently suffer from COPD and dogs certainly do not smoke. In recent years, some

experts have argued with good reason that the main cause of COPD is the loss of the architecture of the lungs. The lungs, just like our bones and joints, are supported by a meshwork of fibres to provide support. When this meshwork starts to break down, in a similar way that the joints start to break down, or the skin starts to wrinkle, the resulting outcome is COPD. Just as some people are more prone to joint problems, or others develop joint problems from excessively strain-

ing their joints, in the same manner, some people are more prone to developing COPD. When the lungs lose their supporting framework, they become more prone to damage from atmospheric contaminants, and this ultimately causes inflammation. An inflamed lung is more prone to infections from bacteria and viruses, and this adds to some of the other health problems associated with COPD. The current management of COPD is no different from the management of asthma, emphysema or chronic bronchitis and the usual prescription drugs will include steroids to reduce inflammation, bronchodilators to expand the breathing tubes, and occasional antibiotics to

fight infections. However, there is evidence that supporting the framework of the lungs with the mineral MSM can reverse COPD or at least dramatically improve a sufferer's quality of life. MSM - Methyl sulfonyl methane is the raw material the body requires to produce collagen which provides the main support for the lungs, joints, bones, skin, hair, nails. MSM is naturally found in the body, and is available in fresh vegetables however it is easily destroyed by cooking, and we no longer receive sufficient amounts from our daily diet. At MedB, we use MSM for managing COPD with impressive results. For A Full Body Diagnostic Scan Call MedB Clinic: 965071745.

UK Health budget rise 'less than was promised' Ministers in England have given the wrong impression about how much extra they are spending on health, MPs say. The government made big play of the extra £8.4bn on top of inflation it was giving the NHS this parliament when it unveiled its spending plans last year. But the Health Select Committee said the true figure was about £4.5bn. The MPs said a different definition of spending was used to give the idea of more funding. Ministers have rejected the accusation. The cross-party group of MPs said instead of focusing on the whole health budget ministers highlighted the amount going to the frontline via NHS England. In 2015-16 that was about £101bn, but that ignored £15bn of money set aside for other aspects such as training and public health. Covering deficits This is being cut once inflation is taken into account and means the total

health budget rises from £116bn in 2015-16 to just over £120bn by the end of the parliament. MPs said this was important because the cuts to other areas of spending would have an impact on everything from staffing to health promotion schemes, such as obesity programmes, which have a direct impact on the frontline of the NHS. The committee also said the scale of overspending last year - NHS trusts finished 2015-16 £2.45bn in the red - would mean large chunks of the extra money being used to cover deficits. Committee chair Dr Sara Wollaston added: "Whilst the NHS has been treated favourably compared to many other departments, the increase in health funding is less than was promised if assessed by usual definitions." 'Flawed' policy But a Department of Health spokesman said ministers stood by their figures, saying despite public

finances being tight the government had found the money needed. "We reject these conclusions," he said. Meanwhile, leading researchers have questioned the government's policy of creating a seven-day NHS at a time when money is so tight. Rachel Meacock, from the University of Manchester, called for a pause in the policy, saying the arguments made by the government that increasing staffing at weekends would cut death rates were "flawed". She said pushing ahead with the policy could end up making care during the week worse because services would be stretched. Prof Julian Bion, who leads an official research programme into NHS care at weekends, said the plans would be "unachievable" with the current level of funding. He predicted it could even be a "good 20 years" before the policy was fully realised across both emergency and non-emergency care.

Patient's Patience Hangs By A Thread My pub cronies and I were at a loose end the other evening because our leader and guide Andromeda Arkwright was not there to lead and guide us. She was absent visiting her sister in hospital. As for the loose end, it belonged to Dave the barman's waistcoat. The thread was dangling from the bottom of the garment and we were deliberating whether or not to pull on the thread or just leave it alone. Dave the barman, of course, had the final word because it was his waistcoat. 'What if I pull on the loose end and the whole thing unravels? I can't serve a customer half-undressed,' mein host whinged. 'Dave,' I said. 'If money was destined for your cash till, you would serve a customer stark naked!'

Suddenly, I had a light bulb moment. 'We're standing here lost and rudderless. Might I suggest that we all go visit Andromeda's sister in the hospital.' Dave the barman shrugged. But he didn't shrug too hard in case his waistcoat fell to pieces. 'But we don't know Andromeda's sister,' he pointed out. 'And besides, I need to be here in case a paying customer walks in.' I shook my head. 'The chances of a paying customer entering these premises is virtually nil. 'Anyway,' I went on. 'Just think how pleased Andromeda will be to see us using our initiative for the first time. Let's show her that we can think for ourselves.' So while Dave the barman shut up shop, us pub mates piled into the inn's mini-bus for

one of our rare evenings out. We pubsters introduced ourselves in turn to Andromeda's sister and wished her a speedy recovery. Andromeda's sister smiled as we each shook hands with her and Andromeda herself beamed with pride at her boys. 'I can't tell you how much better I feel,' said the patient. So all ended happily . . . well almost. Andromeda's sister looked perfectly relaxed as she sank back onto her pillow. And then a hand shot through the open window behind her bed and waved about in front of the woman's eyes. 'Aaaargh!' shrieked Andromeda's sister. 'What the hell is that?' 'Sorry, missus,' came a voice behind the hand. 'I'm with this lot,' it added, a finger

pointing at us visitors. 'My name is Bill and I can't come in because I smoke cigarettes all the time.' 'Get back to the mini-bus and start the engine!' I yelled out of the ward window. 'What on earth made you bring Fag Ash Bill with you?' demanded Andromeda Arkwright. 'We had no choice,' I said. 'Fag Ash Bill is forced to spend all his time on the pavement outside the pub usually without a drink so we made him our designated driver.' 'If drinking alcohol is the criterion,' grumbled Dave the barman, 'then ANY of you could be the designated driver.' Andromeda Arkwright ushered us all out of the ward after first making sure that her sister was fully relaxed again. We had barely made it

through the door when we heard a piercing scream. 'Aaaargh!' said the scream. It belonged to Andromeda's sister. A strange sight met our eyes. Andromeda's sister's arms and legs were flailing about on the bed. Her limbs were all we could see for there, lying perfectly still on top of her, was the figure of a horizontal man. With the assistance of a burst of adrenalin, Andromeda Arkwright dragged the bloke off the bed and yelled at us: 'What the hell made you bring Ol' Red Eyes with you?' 'We couldn't leave the old feller alone in the pub,' I said. 'He might have woken up, tottered over to the bar to see where everybody was and accidentally hanged himself by his braces from a beer pump.

'Anyway,' I further explained. 'We left him just now on the floor in the relatives room. But he must have sniffed the alcohol in the surgical spirits emanating from the ward and crawled to the nearest bed.' Andromeda Arkwright heaved a huge sigh. 'All of you, please return to the pub forthwith. I shall join you later to conduct a crash course in how to behave yourselves in public.' As we pubsters dragged Ol' Red Eyes out of the hospital, the old codger came awake, opened one rheumy eye and spotted the thread hanging from Dave the barman's waistcoat. He reached out a gnarled hand, grabbed hold of the loose end and pulled. Dave the barman's waistcoat stayed in one piece. But his trousers fell down.

Subaru WRX STI sets new fourwheeled lap record

The car was piloted by Mark Higgins, a stunt driver in James Bond movies

This year’s TT festival on the Isle of Man saw an enhanced Subaru WRX STI set a new four-wheeled lap record. Piloted by Mark Higgins, who you’re most likely to have seen strutting his stuff as a stunt driver in James Bond movies, the modded Scooby first broke the old record on

the Saturday of TT week. But two days later, it was back out on the route – where Higgins posted a time of 17 minutes and 35.139 seconds. That equates to 128.73mph. A subsequent run, in which Higgins was aiming to beat 130mph, had to be abandoned after a fatality led to the race being red-

flagged. But by then he had been clocked through the fastest part of the TT route at a monstrous 168.6mph. Since setting the new record, Subaru has published some eye-popping video footage from both inside and outside the car. It makes for enthralling viewing.

Ghostbusters: scary goings-on with 1989 Cadillac and motorcycle featuring in film

Forget all about the Ghostbusters of your youth because this is a proper reboot. Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy are nerdy friends who are in the paranormal business. Kate McKinnon’s character gets invited to help them build ghost-catching technology and then Leslie Jones joins as the down-to-earth, no-nonsense member of the ghost-busting team. Oh, almost forgot, Chris Hemsworth gets recruited as the receptionist, clearly the token beefcake. Which brings us to the important business of what the team will be driving.

The thing is that the original Ecto-1 was the really rather cool 1959 Cadillac Fleetwood which was modified into a Futura ambulance by coachbuilders MillerMeteor. It would be hard to top that, but just as the 1959 Cadillac looked like a clunky old ambulance, the producers of the film have pulled the same trick by featuring a 1989 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham hearse. Compared to the earlier winged Ecto, it is rather square and brick-like. However, for today’s audience it may now look just as retro and supercool.

The real motorised ghostbusting development has to be the introduction of Ecto-2. For fans of the animated television version, there must be some, The Real Ghostbusters, Ecto-2 was an autogyro. Now it is a motorcycle. However, it is not very easy to identify one, it just looks like a generic Japanese scrambler from the 1980s. A little digging through motorcycle encylopedias finally reveals it to be a middle 1970s Harley Davidson SXT125. This will be ridden by Chris Hemsworth in some anti-ghost operation. We can’t wait to see it in action.

Series Reflections Friendly Draw

The SAMM (Sailing Association Mar Menor) 2016 Spring Race Series turned out to be a great success with 13 of the planned races being run, with the cancellations only due to other events being run out of the CTD Boatyard at Los Narejos. It was a closely fought race for the top three places and the results could have been different if the regular skippers on Conny and Sirocco had been around for the last race day. Each boat was able to discard their worst three results so that 10 of the 13 counted. SAMM run these handicap

races on the low points system, the wining boat being Shoestring Cuatro with 17.75 points including five race wins, second Sirocco with 27.5 points and third Conny with 29 points. Sirocco’s second place was notable as, for many races, she was sailed singlehandedly by Julian Pering, right in the photograph. The Cuatros crew varied during the season so Jack Moss, left, collected the trophy. Next is the Autumn Series which starts on Sunday September 4th, with more details on the SAMM web site www.sailingmarmenor.com

Two teams with new eras in front of them played out a two-all draw on Wednesday night at the Manolo Maciá municipal staidum in Santa Pola. Elche under new coach Alberto Toril(minus star striker Sergio León to avoid picking up an injury

ahead of his likely move to Sporting Gijón) took on CD Almoradi, who got promoted to Group Six of the third division. The Ilicitanos were set for a two-one win before a late equaliser from Sergio Poveda secured a draw.

Germany Bound

Real Madrid have confirmed that young striker Borja Mayoral will join Bundesliga side Wolfsburg on a season-long loan deal. The 19-year-old was part of the Real squad that travelled to North America for a preseason tour, but returned to

Spain to finalise the details of his move to Germany. Mayoral said he was looking forward to a new chapter in his career and expressed hope that regular first-team football could help him earn a return to the Santiago Bernabeu.

The 30-year-old has been named as his country’s flagbearer in the opening ceremony and will be one of four Spaniards competing in the men’s singles. He will also play in the men’s doubles with Marc Lopez.

Pirates Plunder Torry PINATAR PIRATES 270 FOR 7 TORREVIEJA 148 FOR 8 PINATAR WON BY 122 RUNS The Pinatar Pirates proved too strong for a spirited Torrevieja side and recorded a comprehensive victory last Saturday in the latest ECCL Division Two encounter. Pinatar batted first and posted a very challenging 270 for 7 for the home side to chase down. R Singh top scored with 73 before being run out and then he was well supported by his P Singh and G Singh who scored 52 and 40 respectively to put up a total that Torrevieja were never in a shout of getting. The home side plugged away gamefully from the first to last ball but they struggled to make of a positive inroad into the required

total. They did, however, manage to deny the visitors maximum bowling points as they batted out their overs to record a score of 148 for 8. Opener Chris Darwen, top scored with a fine 64 whilst there were notable contributions from Ciaran Gulchard (18) and Kailash Singh (21) who frustrated the Pinatar bowlers with their dogged resistance. Pinatar finally ended up with 19 points from the match, whilst Torrevieja amassed 5 points. Torrevieja are away to Alfas this Sunday, and then have their next home fixture on Saturday July 30th, as they entertain Levante with an 11.00 am start.

Henrik’s Swedish First It really was incredible, what unfolded at Royal Troon on Sunday, as Sweden’s Henrik Stenson wrested the Claret Jug away from Phil Mickelson in the 145th British Open in record-breaking style. Closing with a birdie on the 18th hole for the 29th round of 63 in majorchampionship history — and the second in four days as Mickelson did it last Thursday — Stenson joined Johnny Miller as the only man to shoot that fourth-round score and win. At 20-under 264, Stenson also established the lowest 72-hole score in major-championship play. He also became the first male from Sweden to win a major title. Oh, and he joined with Mickelson, who shot 65 — 267 and

lost — in a classic headto-head match reminiscent of Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus in 1977. Their “Duel in the Sun” took place at Turnberry, which you can see along the coast from Troon’s par-5 sixth hole (hence the name of the hole, Turnberry). “It makes it even more special to beat a competitor like Phil,” said Stenson. “He’s been one of the bet to play the game.” Returning the praise, Mickelson, who had led at 18 and 36 holes, said he was happy for the Swede. “I knew that he would ultimately come through and win (a major). I’m happy that he did. I’m disappointed that it was at my expense.”

If you want to say it was the first time that match play had been played in the final round of the Open, you would be in good form. Stenson started the day one stroke clear of Mickelson, and the next-nearest competitor was Bill Haas, six back. What transpired was pure brilliance along the Ayrshire Coast. Stenson offset an opening bogey with five birdies to go out in 32, Mickelson matched that 32 with an eagle and two birdies. It was Stenson’s birdie at the ninth that pushed him to 16 under, one in front, then each birdied the 10th.Stenson’s second three-putt bogey of the day, at the 11th, produced a tie, and it remained that way until magic happened

for the tall and personable Swede. He poured in a 16footer at the par-3 14th, then dropped in a putt from downtown Prestwick at the par-4 15th. Now leading by two, 19 under to 17 under, Stenson needed only to avoid falling into a bunker and breaking a leg. He did that, but for good measure he poured in his 10th and final birdie of the day at the 18th. “I just played some great golf,” said Stenson, who hit 11 fairways, 16 greens and just 27 putts. “For some reason, I felt like this is my time — and it was.” Oh, how it scintillating it was, Stenson going 68-63 on the weekend, Mickelson posting 70-65. Oh, how it reminded me of that weekend 39 years ago.

R e m e m b e r … To m Watson shot 65-65 on the weekend, clipping Nicklaus (65-66) by a stroke as Hubert Green finished third, 11 back. “I won this golf tournament,” Green famously said. “I don’t know what game those other two guys were playing.” Likely, J.B. Holmes would gladly echo Green’s sentiments after he closed with a 69 to shoot 6-under 278 and finish in third. That left him 4 kilometers behind, which converted into 14 strokes. Since “Duel in the Sun” is already taken, let the search commence for a fitting title to the epic that unfolded Sunday at Troon, an exhilarating competition between veterans — Stenson, 40; Mickelson, 46 — who could commiserate

Open Reflections

1: RORY’S GAFFS If we gave the Claret Jug to the player most adept at sparking controversy during and before the Open, Rory McIlroy would have run away from the field at Royal Troon like Henrik Stenson did. It started 10 days ago, when the Northern Irishman didn’t back down from his Olympic withdrawal, defiantly stating that he didn’t get into golf to “grow the game” and that he wouldn’t watch

Olympics golf, only the sports that mattered. He also slammed drug testing in golf, claiming it’s so weak that he could get away with using HGH (Human Growth Hormone). This was all in one press conference! He doubled down on his comments two days later, creating more stir, and topped everything off by throwing and smashing his 3-wood into shattered oblivion in a fit of anger Saturday. Not the first

time! But McIlroy couldn’t leave the Open on Sunday without adding one more incendiary comment to the piled up horde. The 27-year-old actually finished T-5 for the week – 16 shots back – and was highly enthusiastic about the state of his game. But when asked how “desperately” he wanted to win the PGA Championship, “Look, I want to win,” McIlroy said. “I want to play well. I think you

guys (the media) are more desperate for it to happen than I am.” Ouch, Rory. None of his comments appeared to originate from malice, but as a way to reflect some of his truthful thoughts. McIlroy said he wanted to be true to himself, and in that regard he’s succeeding. But perhaps he is more interested in showing off his body building in his tight fitting shirts! Still, however wellmeaning, your words and

actions hurt, Rory. 2: PHIL MICKELSON’S CAP Mickelson wasn't quite as sharp on Sunday, Mickelson's veteran craftiness wasn't just noticeable in his game plan for Royal Troon. He also showed

with each other regarding major championships. Mickelson was 33 in 2004 when he won the Masters, his first major triumph, in his 43rd start as a professional. At Troon, Stenson won his first major in his 34th start. Mickelson’s run of success in the majors continued with four more victories, including the 2013 Open when he closed with 66 and left Stenson in second, three back. Asked last Saturday whether he had revenge on his mind, the fun-loving and quickwitted Stenson seized the moment: “There’s always revenge.” He had a wide smile on his face, but like Mickelson, it was all business Sunday. Sensational business!

some scientific like ingenuity in making sure his hat stayed on in the wind by using a binder clip on his too-large hat that was at risk of being blown off his head. Why didn’t Callaway or KPMG give him one that fitted?

United’s £85m Pogba Bid Rejected

Firing And Hiring CD Torrevieja’s new season will see a new coach at the helm as the club sacked Antonio Pedreño Saura, just less than 18 months after replacing the ex-Eldense manager, Galiana. 48 - yearold Uruguayan, Gabi Correa, with extensive local managerial experience, has been brought in to steady the ship. The likeable Pedreño paid the price for a mid-table finish of eleventh place, plus a fag-end conclusion to the season which saw just eight

points accumulated from the last eight matches. All the damage to Torry’s chances were done in the autumn when they could barely pick up a point despite pre-season hype about being serious promotion contenders. In fact, Torry looked like a decent autumn bet for relegation until they got their act together with an excellent New Year run, but they had too big a mountain to climb to give themselves even an outside chance of a play-off

spot. CD Torrevieja thanked Galiana and his assistants for their professionalism, and wished them well for the future. Pedreño’s successor, Gabi Correa, is a native of Montevideo and played in defence for River Plate and Penarol in Uruguay as well representing his country as a 22-year-old in the 1990 World Cup finals in Italy, with his side bowing out to the hosts, two-nil, in the knockout stages. Correa won 19 international caps. In Spain,

he played for Real Murcia, Valladolid, Sevilla and Hercules. As a coach, Correa, was in charge of Real Murcia, AD Mar Menor, Caravaca CF. Lorca Deportiva CF and UCAM Murcia CF in the 2013-14 season with whom he won promotion to 2nd Division B as champions. In the 2014-2015 season he returned to AD Mar Menor in the third division and last season, he was part of the coaching team at Orihuela CF.

Comings And Goings

Four players have so far left CD Torrevieja ahead of the 2016/17 season, with another four committing themselves to stay at the club, including defender Vicente Boix and experienced local midfielder, Burguillos, who will be getting ready for his seventh campaign in a Torrevieja shirt (pictured). The club have also announced their first new signing of the summer, namely 29-year-old defender, Joaquín Pastor Martínez “Pastor”, who joins from new coach, Gabi Correa’s former club, Orihuela (pictured in that club’s yellow kit). On the departures front, recently signed players are the ones that appear to have moved on, but it has not been made clear whether

they were told that were surplus to requirements, or chose to leave. Ruben Suarez only joined the club in November and was brought in by the club’s thensporting director, Jonathan Risueño, from CD Castellon. The 36-year-old immediately impressed but has now left for CF Torre Levante. Another autumn signing, Higón, has gone to Hospitalet CEL in the 2nd Division B, whilst midfielder José Antonio Sánchez, who joined from Yecla last summer, has gone to El Palmar. Forward Anton Prieto, who only signed up in January, has returned to his ex-club, AD Ceuta. Burguillos, who captained Torrevieja during last season’s mid-term run of 11 unbeaten matches, was the

first player to commit to the club, with utility player Martin; Vicente Boix, and Torry Army Fans Player of the Year, Luis Carlos, also electing to stay for another year. Torry’s new man, Pastor, has experience playing for the Hungarian side Ferencvaros, in addition to teams mainly around the Murcia region including Real Murcia Imperial, Moratalla, Ciudad de Lorqui,, Pontevedra CF, Lorca Atlético CF, UCAM Murcia CF and most recently, Orihuela. Several promising youngsters from the Juveniles side will be training with the first sqaud as they hope to emulate Ruben Belima, Damian Aguera and Joel who went on to be signed by Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Villareal respectively. However, experienced personnel will also be evident as well as Scandinavian prospects, Max Eggsertsson and Philip Lovgreen have travelled to the area to see if they can secure a place in the team. The season kicks off on Sunday August 21st and there will be 21 teams in the Group Six division this time round, with the fixture list set to be available within the next few days. A series of

Liverpool Sign Klavan Liverpool have completed the signing of defender Ragnar Klavan for an undisclosed fee from Augsburg. The experienced Estonia international has been brought in as cover at centreback as Mamadou Sakho and Joe Gomez both have injuries while Tiago Ilori, who

could have been a fall-back option, is heading to the Olympics with Portugal. Klavan, who has more than 100 caps for his country and has had four seasons in the Bundesliga, told the club's official website: "I'm really honoured to be part of this amazing club, this amaz-

pre-season matches have been arranged starting tomorrow evening (Saturday) at the Vicente Garcia Stadium with a 7.30 pm kick off against La Liga segunda division side, Elche.

Manchester United have had an £85m bid for Paul Pogba rejected by Juventus, according to reports in Italy. United had the offer turned down on Tuesday but have reportedly been told by the Italian champions that a world-record transfer fee in excess of £100m for the France midfielder would be accepted. It is understood Juventus have now accepted Pogba wants to leave the club, although the cost of the deal has already priced Real Madrid out of the market. United's initial offer was made during a meeting between their executive vicechairman, Ed Woodward, Pogba's agent, M i n o Raiola, and Juventus general manager and CEO Giuseppe Marotta. Pogba remains on holiday and will not return to Turin until August 6. New United boss Jose Mourinho recently spoke of four priority targets in the transfer

window and midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan's capture marked their third acquisition following the arrivals of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and centre-back Eric Bailly. Pogba left Old Trafford on a free transfer in 2012 but the 23-year-old could be set to return this summer, with negotiations over a deal understood to have begun earlier this month.

Same Old, Same Old

If matters run their normal course, the wrath of the vile English national press will soon exploit the poor new man’s past and weaknesses, as once again we begin the build up towards another World Cup, this one in unlikely Russia in 2018. Sam’s first competitive game in charge will be a World Cup qualifier in Slovakia on September 4th. Big Sam as the England boss, eh? Sunderland once again somehow managed to avoid relegation last year, this time saved miraculously by Sam Allardyce, their manager for the huge time of nine months. This much-travelled 61 year-old’s proud boast is never having been relegated although he’s certainly flirted with it a few times, including last season. His modest CV shows he managed Bolton, Newcastle and West Ham before the brief Black Cats escapade. But does that get-out-of-danger experience make the big man the ideal candidate to manage England? No, it certainly doesn’t but Allardyce appeared to be the favourite from the outset. Incidentally the man from Dudley has never won a major trophy but did secure promotion to the Premier League with both Bolton and West Ham, and won Division Three with Notts County in 1998. Well, that’s great then, ideal choice! Just to put a bit of ‘competitive’ spice into it the FA (all jokes about what ‘FA’ stands for allowed) had also interviewed Hull boss Steve Bruce about the England position.’ By the way, Steve, what’s your claim to fame, managerially speaking? Why, only leading the Tigers back into the Premier League last season after relegation to the Championship in 2015 – well that’s perfect credentials for the (tiny) step up to meeting international class like Brazil and Germany, isn’t it?

Bournemouth young manager Eddie Howe’s name was also mentioned... oh, and just to make a game of it, USA coach Jurgen Klinsmann’s name was also linked with the role. Excuse me, but now you’re talking! Here really is an exinternational star who knows English football, the German having played it so well for Spurs, and is currently doing a great job in the States. But he didn’t get it, did he? Steve Bruce: ‘whoever gets the job needs to take away the players fear in tournaments’, after only one win in seven matches at the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2016. Fear? The England players didn’t look frightened at all to me – clueless, yes - outplayed, definitely - no fire in their bellies, oh yes. What could they possibly be frightened of - apart from going to the local pub when they got home? Final thought: just who are the ‘FA’? FA chief executive Martin Glenn fronted a three-man panel, which also included FA technical director Dan Ashworth and board member David Gill. Glenn, former CEO of United Biscuits, responded to criticism for admitting he ‘wasn't a football man’ by pointing out he had ‘hired some very talented people over the years into high-pressure jobs’. Erm, excuse me but those same men appointed the hapless Roy Hodgson. Shouldn’t major questions be asked in the home of English football as to WHY England failed so badly - again. You know, like those highly-pressurized Government enquiries you see on TV with the top decision-makers of companies squirming under hostile fire - and then maybe one or two more might follow Roy home – and then get someone in who does know what they’re doing - because these men plainly don’t, their arrogance does take the biscuit...Good luck Big Sam!

Elche will start their 2016/17 Segunda Division campaign by entertaining Madrid-side Rayo Vallecano on the weekend of August 20th/21st. The Illicitanos then go away to Girona, before returning home for the first weekend of September with an encounter against Tenerife.

Purple Clash

Fans waiting for the first El Clasico clash of the next La Liga season will have to be patient as Barcelona and Real Madrid will face one another at the Nou Camp in early December, with the return fixture to be played at the Bernabeu in late April. The fixtures for the new campaign were announced last Friday, with Spain's big two likely to fight it out again for the title along with Atletico Madrid. Reigning champions Barca face Real Betis at home on the opening weekend of the season on August 20th and 21st. Meanwhile, last season's runners-up Real Madrid are away to Real Sociedad in the first round of matches. The 2015-16 top two are subsequently scheduled to go head-to-head at the Nou Camp on December 3rd or 4th, with the reverse fixture then taking place on April 23rd in the 33rd round of matches out of 38. The final round of games, pencilled in for May 21nd, will see Barcelona host Eibar and Real Madrid play at Malaga. Luis Enrique's Barca are looking to claim a third straight La Liga title, while reigning European champions Real are aiming to claim the trophy for the first time since 2011-12.

Gijón Bound

Barcelona and Real Madrid have both gone purple for their away kits in an announcement made on the same day. The colour clash adds fuel to the fire between the bitter rivals as well as their respective sponsors, Nike and Adidas. The La Liga champions said on their website that the design “continues Barcelona’s tradition of playing in vibrant away colours that shock and excite, while also reasserting their classic home colours together in an unprecedented new fashion.” Real Madrid, meanwhile, will be wearing purple for the first time since their 2010-2011 campaign when they won Copa del Rey and finished second in the league under José Mourinho.

Elche have told Sporting Gijón that their top striker Sergio León can join them but only if the fee is around 1.4 million plus extras. Elche president Diego Garcia is in personal charge of the negotiations with an expectation that a deal will be secured by the end of the week. Meanwhile midfielder, Mandi, has signed a contract extension with the Ilicitanos which will take him up till next summer, with an option for a further year. The 27-year-old player joined from Sporting Gijón last year, and was the subject of interest from Córdoba, UCAM Murcia and Rayo Vallecano, where Elche’s former sporting director Ramon Planes is now based, who persuaded Mandi to join the Ilicitanos back in August. Mandi, who started in 35 matches for Elche last season, did play for current Elche coach Alberto Toril at Real Madrid Castilla.

Conte Countdown!

Ronaldo Will Return Stronger! Cristiano Ronaldo said he intends to come back stronger for the upcoming season despite sustaining an injury during Portugal's victorious Euro 2016 final against France. The Real Madrid star, limped off in tears with a knee injury in the first half of the final against the tournament hosts earlier in July. According to reports, the 31-year-old has a knee ligament injury, and is unlikely to return to action before Real's third game of the La Liga season.

Timers From Rock was enough to get the job done and settle any lingering nerves. New Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers was desperate to exercise the ghost of Gibraltar and almost 50,000 fans packed into Celtic Park expecting his side to do just that. A repeat of the sensational shock on the Rock was simply unthinkable. The evening started with the unfurling of the SPFL Premiership league title flag but as the cheers died down, last season was forgotten and attention turned to Champions League progression. As expected, Celtic were roared on by the home support.

‘Blue is the colour,’ goes a certain famous football team’s song... No, not the Man City blue, nor the Leicester City Champions blue either, writes JOHN MCGREGOR. I am referring to the Italian blue taking charge at Chelsea: Roman Abramovich’s 11th change of manager at Stamford Bridge. Antonio Conte joins a stellar coaching cast list that has been assembled in the Premier League for the start of the new campaign, with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, Jose Mourinho at Manchester United and Jurgen Klopp embarking on h i s

first full season at Liverpool. The 46-year-old Conte arrived at Stamford Bridge recently after taking time off to ease the disappointment of the defeat by Germany on penalties in the Euro 2016 quarterfinals in Bordeaux. The Italian will certainly add to the cult of personality, as well as coaching acumen when he starts his reign at home to West Ham United next month. Conte's tactical approach and animated demeanour made him one of the significant figures of the tournament in France so what can Chelsea and the Premier League expect next season? Conte is a ball of fire in his technical area, a blur of perpetual motion mirroring his team's style. Not only does he provide flamboyant goal celebrations, like when he jumped on top of the dugout when Italy scored against Spain in their last-sixteen victory, the Italian body language commentary on the game is fascinating. He was even caught on camera lashing the ball away when it landed at his feet after Italy had lost possession. At one point during the loss to Germany, Conte marched along the length of his technical area in perfect time and tempo to Italy's play. He sets himself up exactly in line with his back four - a job he may find more difficult in Stamford Bridge's enclosed spaces. Conte will be as involved in the game as much as his players. He

gave an unsuspecting member of his support team a hefty shove during one exchange, planted a kiss on goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon before the penalty shootout and took his team to the dugout for a brief bonding session before they started that disappointing final phase. There is a touch of vanity too, not just in what will become a familiar touchline strut, but also in his lavishly re-upholstered hairline. How is Conte’s new team shaping up at Stamford Bridge? Two weeks ago Chelsea signed Belgium striker Michy Batshuayi from Marseille for a fee believed to be worth £33m. Now Chelsea have also signed Leicester City midfielder N'Golo Kante on a five-year deal for a fee believed to be in the region of £30m, a record for Leicester to receive for a player who cost just £6m. Meanwhile Conte lost his first game in charge as the Blues were beaten 2-0 by Rapid Vienna in a friendly. Chelsea fielded a strong side captained by John Terry and including Branislav Ivanovic, Nemanja Matic, Willian, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Diego Costa, after Conte had announced that key striker Costa will stay at the club next season and is of ‘fundamental importance’ to his plans, after he had been linked with a return to former club Atletico Madrid. It looks an exciting time at the Bridge for Chelsea this season with Conte at the helm!

The Latest Sport Headlines FOOTBALL Germany striker Mario Gomez "will not be playing" for Besiktas again because of the "political situation" in Turkey. Gomez scored 28 goals in 41 games for the Istanbul club, while on loan from Serie A side Fiorentina, and won the Turkish league title. CRICKET Pakistan's Yasir Shah is "the best leg-spinner since Shane Warne", says England all-rounder Ben Stokes. Yasir, 30, finished with 10141 as Pakistan beat England by 75 runs in the first Test at Lord's last week. FOOTBALL Plans designed to reduce "intolerable behaviour" by players and managers in English football have been announced. In a statement, the Premier League, English Football League and Football Association said poor conduct has reached "unacceptable levels". Starting this season, red cards will be issued to players who confront match officials and use offensive language or make gestures towards them. FORMULA 1 The big question heading into this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix is whether Red Bull can beat Mercedes on merit for the first time this season. Mercedes have already said they regard Red Bull as a "major threat" in Hungary. Red Bull are the only team other than Mercedes to have won this year - but that was in Spain, where Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg crashed together on the first lap. FOOTBALL Middlesbrough have agreed a deal to sign striker Alvaro Negredo on a season-long loan from Valencia. Negredo won the Premier League during a spell at Manchester City, scoring 23 goals in 48 appearances in 2013-14.

Right, no panic – what shall we do now lads? Easy, just grab the nearest Englishman, one who’s never even played for his country, and appoint him the new England manager. Continued Inside.
