BRIT MP’S ARREST

BY ALEX TRELINSKI

A

British MP was detained after a row with his estranged wife at their Algorfa holiday home. Simon Danczuk, the MP for

w

Rochdale, who was suspended last year by the Labour Party for allegedly sending inappropriate text messages to an underage girl, appeared before Orihuela’s domestic

violence court on Tuesday. He was freed and the case filed as no charges were brought forward after testimony from Danczuk and his wife, Karen, where they said that nothing violent had happened, but voices had been “raised” over a personal matter. 33-year-old Karen Danczuk and her husband were on a summer break with their two sons when neighbours heard shouting coming from their Algorfa property last Saturday night. The disturbance forced them to call the local police with officers

then arriving at the address at 9.40 pm and arresting Danczuk. The MP was held for a couple of nights in Guardia Civil cells, before Tuesday’s Orihuela court appearance. Karen Danczuk was taken by ambulance to the Vega Baja Hospital on the Saturday night for a small cut that officers said she had sustained in a fall. Reports from witnesses suggested that the 49-year-old MP snatched his wife’s phone and threw it into the swimming pool after screaming: “Karen, Karen, I just want to talk to you”.

LONG WAIT ENDS

ork has finally begun, after a six week delay, on the three million euro rebuild of the Poeta Miguel Hernández school in Rojales (formerly

known as the Príncipe de España school). Work was due to start at the end of the school year in June, but there was a dispute between the Valencian education

department and the contractor, Ecisa. The contractors moved in to start work on taking down the sports hall, which is part of the 30-year-old building that racked up a series of serious health and safety

issues, with calls for a new building starting back in 2003. Work will take place over 18 months with the students having to use prefabricated temporary classrooms until the project is completed.

Nearly 130 million travellers have used airports across Spain operated by AENA up to the end of July, a rise of 11.6% over the same period of 2015. The figures for last month showed an 11.1% rise compared to a year earlier, putting the figures at 25.67 million, with Alicante-Elche airport showing the biggest percentage increase of 15.3% with 1.46 million passengers in

July, of which over 600 thousand travellers were British. Domestic travellers came in at 123 thousand, followed by Norweigan visitors at 115 thousand, and German passengers at 96 thousand. Alicante-Elche Airport recorded nearly seven million passengers in 2016 up to the end of July, a rise of 16.3% with a 17.2%, rise in the number of flights offered, standing at nearly 49 thousand.

Family Rescued

Fireworks rained down on Elche last Saturday with the annual Nit de l’Alba as over 60 thousand rockets launched into the night sky in the annual celebration that drew

thousands of visitors in from around the area and across Spain as well as foreign tourists. The city centre went dark at midnight with a thousand rockets fired

from the top of the Santa María church to launch the spectacular display with authorities reporting 46 minor injuries during the festivities, with no serious incidents.

A four-year-old boy was taken to hospital in Cartagena on Tuesday after a boat in which he was travelling with the rest of his family capsized in the Mar Menor close to Perdiguera island. Strong winds led to the incident with the boy

(who suffered minor concussion) and six other people being rescued by emergency services and taken to the shore at Los Urrutias. Two other boats also got into difficultly due to the conditions and needed help to get to land.

Sibling Showdown A 26-year-old British woman has been arrested for biting her younger brother at her parent's home in Gea Y Truyols, Murcia. The local police were called to the Lo Santiago urbanisation after getting a call from the woman's mother about the

incident, with the daughter unable to be restrained after her brother was left with a mark on his left arm, as well getting scratched across his body including his face, neck and chest. The offender was taken to the Guardia barracks at Torre Pacheco.

Complaints from residents in the Villamartin Plaza area about the noise from the Passion Dance Club has led to a recommendation from the Valencian Ombudsman that Orihuela council should review the venue’s license,

which could see it closed. Residents have continually complained about the late night noise from the club as well as security and safety issues. The Ombudsman has told Oriheula council that they need to thoroughly review

the venue’s license and what it has done over sound-proofing amongst a range of issues, as well as the fundamental issue of whether the presence of the club in its current location fits in with municipal ordinances.

Body In Cupboard The husband of a Chilean woman who was reported missing from her Torrevieja home in June has been arrested, after her body was found in a room in their apartment block. 32-year-old Johana Bertina Palma González disappeared in mid-June with concerned relatives

informing authorities about the situation. She lived with her husband, also Chilean, in Torrevieja for around 15 years, and their last address was on Calle Ramón y Cajal in Torrevieja. The couple had two children, aged five and twelve.

The Guardia Civil made a thorough inspection of the building on Wednesday and found her body in an alcove used for a water heater in a water and electricity metre room of the apartment block. The husband apparently confessed to killing his wife after an argument.

Brit And Run

A 40-year-old British man has been arrested two days after running away from the scene of a collision on the Mar Menor. The unnamed Brit fled from authorities after an inflatable banana boat that he was pulling in his motor-

back at his banana boat clients, rather than looking to avoid crashing into the government vessel. The banana boat, with three people in it, skimmed over the top of the patrol vessel, and gashed the leg of a biologist that was working on it. The British man did a runner but was caught a couple of days later and charged at the Guardia barracks in Cartagena, facing dangerous driving charges as well as failing to stop at the scene of an accident. He was said not to have an excursions license as well as the illegal banana boat ride taking place out of the permitted leisure boating hours in the area.

False Alarm A suspicious package under a car forced part of the Lomas de Campoamor urbanisation on the Orihuela Costa to be sealed off for five hours on Tuesday. Security guards reacted to reports from passers-by that they saw a man putting an object under the vehicle parked on Avenida de Ibiza and they called in the police in the belief that it might have been a bomb.

Province so far this year, with 142 cases found of the law being broken by users and owners.

Gang Detained

The National Police have

broken up a six-strong cocaine distribution gang supplying the drug across the Murcia and Valencia regions. Four Columbians and two Spaniards were arrested in Cartagena and Valencia were arrested last week on charges on drug trafficking, illegal possession of weapons and belonging to a criminal organisation.

Valencian government representatives have visited to see if the municipality's famous hydraulic monument of the stone bridge and the water wheel, which were built between the 16th and 18th centuries meets all the requirements of being classified as a site of cultural interest. Cultural territorial chief

José Antonio López Mira and heritage inspector, Luis Pablo Martinez, were given a firsthand tour and history by visiting Rojales council officials. The officials also visited Callosa de Segura where the council is pushing for the local historic hemp works to also get cultural interest recognition.

This compared to 2,500 in April, with peaks recorded following the Nice lorry attack and the attempted military coup in Turkey. Venezuelan police crushed two thousand shotguns and pistols in a Caracas city square, as the new interior minister relaunched a long-stalled gun control campaign in one of the world's most crime-ridden countries. Nearly 18,000 people have died in government prisons in Syria since the beginning of the uprising in 2011. South Sudan's sacked Vice-President Riek Machar has left the country, weeks after his forces were involved in deadly clashes with government troops. Mr Machar had gone to a neighbouring country, his spokesman said.

Finca Body Riddle

Employees in the Murcia region clocked up more hours at their jobs than anybody else in Spain for the first three months of the year according to the National Statistics Institute. They clocked up 422 hours between January and March, followed by Madrid at 405 hours, with the national average standing at 389, the lowest figure for a quarter since 2008. The Valencia region including the Costa Blanca came in at under 380 hours.

No Let Up Murcia government officials have declared war on unregistered holiday accommodation across the Costa Calida, saying that they've identified eighteenhundred illegal rentals in the area which are advertised by 123 companies. Half the firms have received visits with three already fined for not declaring any income. The Tax Office estimates that the Murcia region as a whole has only around 28 percent of the 62 thousand holiday properties on official registers.

The Guardia Civil are trying to work out what happened in the case of a midforties farmer who was found in his Valencia Province swimming pool, with hands and feet bound and his body tied to a bag of stones. The grim find was

made by four teenagers who walked onto the property in Sot de Chera after finding the gate open. The victim rented rooms out on his farm and reports said that he recently had two young men staying who were helping him out with

maintenance work. The Guardia said that his body was in an “advanced state of decomposition” and that he was “tied at his wrists and ankles, had a plastic bag over his head and was weighted down with a bag of stones”.

A Family Affair

An estranged husband shot his ex-wife and attempted to shoot his daughter before turning the gun on himself outside a shopping centre in Zaragoza in north-eastern Spain last Friday. The woman and her daughter had left their car in a multi-storey car park, with the man waiting outside for them in another vehicle from which he opened fire.

Police raced to the scene after reports of shots being fired, and found two people suffering severe injuries. The husband and wife had recently separated and the man had no previous criminal record. The woman actually managed to drive herself to a city hospital while the man was taken there by ambulance.

Better Or Worse? An amateur artist from Castilla y León has ‘restored’ a 17th century statue in a similar vein to the work done by a Cecilia Giménez on the Ecce Homo tablet which made international headlines a few years ago, and led to the opening of a special permanent exhibition in Borja.

To the dismay of historians, an unknown parishioner at the Chapel of Humiladero in Penarda de Bracamonte gave a statue of Saint Michael the Archangel a makeover which has led to heritage experts reporting the matter as an abuse of cultural heritage. One of the major changes is the sudden

appearance of big black bushy eyebrows. The Association of Conservationists and Restorers in Castilla y Leon has defended the work: “Our work is very serious, professional and specific and not as easy as you might imagine,” commented association secretary María Luisa López.

Long Term Woe In Spain

A seven-year-old girl was taken to Zaragoza hospital after being gored through the stomach and bottom during the bull-runs at a local fiesta. The youngster was watching the bulls from behind the railings in the village of Alfamén as part of its patron saint festival. A two-year-old bullock charged into the barriers head-on, breaking the gate and chain around it right

where the little girl – a Romanian national who has lived in the village since she was a toddler – was standing. Luckily, several cars were parked in the street nearby and the child was able to get underneath one of them to protect herself until the bull had moved on. Doctors say the bull’s horns had not damaged any of her vital organs, and that she is now out of danger.

Court Date 85 Alicante Province motorists were brought before the courts for driving offences last month, with 57

25 percent of those out of work in Spain have not worked for at least four years. A report by the Fedea economic think tank found that between April and June of this year, 1,127,879 of the country’s 4.5 million unemployed had failed to work for at least four years. The figure has increased eleven-fold since the start of the crisis in 2008. The report says because unemployment in Spain is at 20%, employers are able to be selective, and go for younger people who have been out of work for shorter periods of time.

Grounded Ship

A schooner that was used in the classic seventies BBC TV series, The Onedin Line, still has not got a certificate of seaworthiness according to an opposition Torrevieja councillor. Eduardo Gil of the Partido Popular claims that the ruling coalition council allowed the documentation to lapse last month for the Torrevieja-based schooner, the Pascual Flores.

In March, the council said they wanted the schooner to be turned into a floating museum or to become a working vessel to be used as a marine laboratory or for outreach activities. Over six million euros of municipality money has been spent on the ship over the years which is regarded as a symbol to the old local tradition of shipbuilding.

Culture councillor Alejandro Blanco said at the time that some water leaks needed to be plugged as well as the need to replace the wooden masts with cheaper synthetic materials, as the authority could not afford wooden replacements. No work appears to have been carried out since his statements earlier this year.

Imperial Recovery

The rare Iberian Imperial Eagles are on the way back after 30 years of concerns

that they may disappear, thanks to a controlled breeding programme in the Doñana

National Park, which lies across the far southern coastal provinces of Cádiz and Huelva. In just one season, 15 chicks have been born alive and are growing healthily, according to the BirdLife charity. They hatched in four nests, with three in each, and another two with one and two respectively, after six of the park’s nine breeding couples successfully reproduced this spring. According to BirdLife spokesman Carlos Dávila, the three per nest is ‘way above average’ and the sudden baby boom has been hailed a triumph for nature.

Quick Climb 30 palm tree climbers hit Elche on Monday for the third international palm tree climbing competition, with the overall 'Espardenya d'Or' won by Demetrio López in the “master” climbing section. A ten and a half metre tall palm tree by the Altamira Palace was used

for the contest, with last year’s “master” victor, Isaac Carbonell taking the speed category, by scrambling up the tree in 9.94 seconds. Contestants from as far away as Columbia in addition to many others from Poland and Portugal took part.

Firebug Caught A 56-year old woman who started 15 forest fires in the north-western region of Galicia has been caught whilst attempting to ignite another seven. In just over a month, she has single-handedly wiped out 22 hectares – 220,000 square metres or around 55 acres – around the town of Cerceda (A Coruña province), contributing to the total of 57 million square metres (5,700 hectares or nearly 14,100 acres) destroyed in the region this summer. The pyromaniac was caught last Friday morning and is said to have put up a

huge fight when they tried to handcuff her. The seven fires she was trying to start when she was caught had just begun to ignite, and six of them were put out by forestry

brigadiers whilst another was extinguished by a local resident. All seven of them were close to residential homes, potentially sparking a multiple tragedy.

Big Leak Plugged

Emergency services stemmed what might have become a major incident in Molina de Segura in the Murcia region when they stopped a leak from a liquid nitrogen factory on the La Serreta industrial estate yesterday in the won on Monday. Concerned residents said that they could smell gas near the factory, but the leak turned out to be liquid nitrogen. Fire tenders had to wait until factory staff arrived, since it was a bank holiday, so they could allow them access to the patio where the leaking tank was located. They then managed to reduce the pressure in the tank to plug the leak.

A small boat carrying eight Algerian refugees was intercepted by the Guardia Civil in the Alicante area on Tuesday morning. The craft was spotted by a sailor off

Cabo de las Huertas who rescued one of the refugees who had fallen into the water. The boat was taken to Alicante, with the Cruz Roja providing medical attention.

Racket Rumbled

A majority of Spaniards need to lose weight according to a survey produced by the National Foundation for Nutrition. They discovered that almost 64 percent of Spaniards needed to lose some weight and highlights that only 36.1 percent of Spaniards between the ages of 18 and 64 were in optimal

condition with a body mass index (BMI) of below 25 and a waist to height ration of under 0.5. The study gathered data on food intake as well as the level of physical activity and the socioeconomic data of the population. The waist to height ratio is becoming increasingly popular for deciding whether a person needs

or not to lose weight and is considered by many to be a more rigorous measure than BMI. If only BMI had been used in the study, closer to 55 percent of Spaniards would need to lose weight. The study also showed there are more fat men than women in Spain with only 28.9 percent considered at a healthy weight compared to 42.7 percent of women. Older people also tend to be fatter than youngsters with only 20 percent of over 40s considered healthy. The study confirms fears that despite the Mediterranean diet, Spaniards are getting heavier due to eating increased amounts of fast and processed food rather than traditional diets.

A Weighty Issue A Guardamar and Pilar de la Horadada-based gang that stole Toyota Land Cruiser cars and then shipped them back to Lithuania, has been arrested in a joint operation between the Guardia Civil and Europol. Six Lithuanian nationals aged between 23 and 63 years were detained,

with five being remanded into custody. 14 stolen vehicles have been recovered to date by the Guardia with the gang stealing the four by four cars in Madrid as well as in Alicante Province and the Murcia region. Further arrests have not been ruled out by the authorities.

Two out of three people in Spain are obese according to a study by Madrid’s Complutense University. Only an estimated 36.1% inhabitants are of an ideal weight or underweight, taken as a body-mass index of lower than 25 and a ratio of height to waist of 0.5. Dr Rosa Ortega says this ratio is a more effective method of calculation than

BMI, although if body-mass index alone was taken into account, the number of people overweight or obese would fall from 63.1% to 53.1%. Men are more likely to be overweight than women, with only 28.9% of males compared with 42.7% of females being of an ideal size for their height, or lower. Age is also a factor – only 20% of Spanish

residents in their forties or older is of an ideal weight, or underweight. Excess weight has gradually been creeping up on people in Spain since the mid1980s, says the Spanish Nutrition Foundation. And even in the last decade and a half, the number of Spanish residents carrying too much body weight has risen sharply. The most recent figures available, based purely upon body-mass index – but which would be higher if height-waist ratio were taken into account – date back to 2013, when 26% of people in Spain were found to be clinically obese. This has risen from 15% in 2002, according to the study which was recently published in BioMed Research International magazine.

Polished Up Spanish authorities arrested 23 members of an alleged Polish drug trafficking gang operating on the Costa del Sol, seizing more than a ton of hashish and property worth over two million euros. The operation, co-ordinated by Europol, ensnared 12 Polish citizens, as well as seven Spanish suspects, two Ukrainians, a Lithuanian and German, who were either members of or in business with the Polish “Pruszkow” criminal gang. The group is suspected of involvement in a range of crimes including drug smuggling, murder, extortion and kidnapping. Among those arrested was a 47-year-old who went by the alias “Bandit” and had reportedly served an earlier sentence in Poland in the 1990s for his involvement with the gangs.

According to Europol, the group was partially dismantled last century, with key members receiving long prison sentences. The National Police said the group moved its operations to Malaga after an “extensive criminal career in Poland”. Officers seized over two mil-

lion euros of property from the suspects, as well as bank accounts and vehicles worth about 137 thousand euros and 45 thousand euros in cash, firearms and documentation. The seven Spanish nationals who were arrested were allegedly supplying the drugs to the Polish gang.

Shots In The Dark Three bullets were fired into a metal door of a summer house in the Los Alcázares area belonging to an elderly couple who have

a son in the Guardia Civil. The incident happened in the early hours of Saturday morning at Los Narejos with local bars and clubs close

by, with no apparent logical motive. Nobody was injured and the Guardia are currently investigating.

On The Edge Of Despair A survey has highlighted the number of British households that are living on a financial knife-edge and demonstrates how catastrophic a recession would be for many of them. The report shows that a third of households would struggle

to pay their rent or mortgage for more than a month if they lost their job and and 23 percent of working families said they would be unable to pay any of their housing costs from the outset. It shows how many Brits are now existing with-

out any meaningful savings and are simply existing from hand to mouth. The study was conducted by Shelter and YouGov and comes from a July poll of 8,381 adults - including 1,581 working families with children. The findings mirror

recent government figures, which show there are 16.5 million working age adults in the UK with no savings at all and many of these say it is the sky-high cost of housing in Britain which is preventing them from being able to save for a rainy day. The

Internet Dangers Can anyone with any measure of common sense tell me how on earth a girl of five can carry out a sexual offence at school - reportedly against a boy under the age of 13 - and have any knowledge of guilty intent or, for that matter, what she was doing? According to the children's charity Plan International, UK children as young as five have been accused of carrying out sexual offences at school and this particular girl mentioned was reported to the police. For her to have any knowledge or interest in sex at that age, she must have been "groomed" by an adult or at least someone much older. Welsh police also investigated claims a

fiveyearo l d b o y h a d sexual activity with a five-yearold girl. The same must apply in this case. According to the charity, the number of sex crimes reported at UK schools has nearly trebled in four years from 719 in 2011-12 to nearly 2,000 in 2014-15. Rape, child prosutution and sexual grooming are all

recorded in increased numbers. What on earth is g o i n g o n ? Anyone would b e

excused in thinking that Brits are totally obsessed with sex. The charity wants relation-

ship education to become compulsory in primary schools, but that is a sad indictment on modern society and seriously brings into question exactly what is going on at home when so many young children's lives are being perverted. Is the cause the ready availability of porn on the web? It may be that parents think that there are age controls in place on what kids are using in the privacy of their bedrooms, but are we creating a generation of pre-pubity sex molesters? I am so pleased I am not a parent trying to cope with bringing up children today. It's a minefield.

Roads Of Hell Mrs M and I are in the UK currently, "enjoying" all the road works everywhere something we endure in Britain year after miserable year. So I really welcome the initiative of local councils for government permission to charge utility companies a daily rate for digging up the roads. The argument is that charging would encourage them to get the work done as quickly as possible, and, by so doing, ease congestion. The Local Government

Association wants councils to be able to introduce socalled lane rental schemes, where firms pay up to ÂŁ2,000 per day for the work they do on the busiest roads at peak periods, without the need to get approval from the Transport S e c r e t a r y. We've travelled hundreds of tortuous miles on UK roads this summer and

have seen mile after mile of road works with not a workman in sight - just hundreds upon hundreds of cones. And while I'm on a roll of road moaning - I find it so annoying to see the growth of yellow-hatched road markings at an ever increasing number of junctions, all policed by cameras. You know that being stuck in a box will promote an instant fine but it's so irritating

that just beyond the hatched junction there's a set of traffic lights poised to create a traffic queue to catch the unwary at the hatched junction. A plague of curses on the highways engineers for dreaming this up. Bus lane markings are traps too - it's all very well until the markings get worn and councils haven't got the money to maintain them. What a wonderful place Britain is for unwary motorists as well being very bad on the pocket!

North West of England is the hardest hit with 29% saying they would not be able to meet housing costs if they lost their job. And with households in this parlous state, it means they are hardly likely to be setting money aside for

retirement either - so heaven help them when they approach retirement age. If this issue is not tackled soon it could lead to extremely damaging civil strife and it would make the fallout from Brexit seem like a walk in the park.

Knock Their Heads Together What have Britain's top bosses awarding themselves a massive 10% pay rises while their staff get next to nothing and a rail union inflicting strike after strike, inflicting misery on thousands of passengers, have in common? The answer - greed and selfinterest. I abhor company directors plotting to see how they can keep wages down to maximise profits just as much as I hate unions acting as Luddites to frustrate change and progress. Blue chip bosses are now awarding themselves an average of ÂŁ5.5m a year, pocketing 140 times more than their employees' average earnings. How on earth this can ever be justified heaven knows, but the government must be seen to act quickly with legislation if necessary, because this growing gulf between the super rich and poor has the potential to wreck the stability of the country. Not only that, the longer it goes on unchecked, the more credible the arguments of Jeremy Corbyn become and, incredible as it seems, his views would gain popularity with mainstream Labour voters. Perhaps self-interest alone

will convince greedy bosses that their excesses must end - just in case Labour does get elected. For many weeks the RMT union has inflicted huge damage on the rail network run by Southern, which runs trains from the Sussex, Hampshire and Surrey to London. It's all about who closes train doors, drivers or conductors. Pathetic, isn't it? For many years bus drivers have done the total job, driving as well as opening and closing doors and taking the money. Arguably their job is more arduous than train drivers, after all they are not having to take money, deal with the public or cope with all the hazards of the road. Of course, this dispute is not, as the unions suggest, about passenger safety but job preservation, after all no trade unionist is ever going to vote to end his job, or see practices introduced which might lead to it after a few months. Greedy bosses and trade unions must be brought before independent judicial tribunals whose decisions are legally binding on both sides, to prevent ridiculous strikes and untold misery to the pubic. There is a better way.

“Stuffed” Cars Halted

Nine British nationals were amongst 22 people arrested in raids last week across the UK and Spain with authorities claiming to have broken up a major smuggling ring. 16 of the detentions were in Spain including a number in Alicante Province, as well as Barcelona and Malaga. According to the National Police, the gang came to the UK to steal vehicles, take them back to Barcelona to "cool off", before filling them with marijuana and cocaine and driving them back to Britain. "Each time a car was driven back to Britain, it would carry around 100 kilos of drugs," said a National Police spokesman.

In addition to the arrests, a fleet of 36 vehicles were seized. Officers also impounded 53 kilos of skunk cannabis, 346 plants and 2,800 marijuana cuttings; 128 kilos of hash, more than 2kg of cocaine and 1,100 grams of amphetamine. They also found £21,400 and 99,000 Euros in cash. Most of the cars stolen to order in the UK were luxury

models, with the drugs being distributed in various hiding places. Many of the vehicles were later sold in Portugal and Italy. "When raids were carried out in Barcelona, Irish number plates were found, together with various sets of keys for different models," said the National Police spokesman. The marijuana was cultivated inside houses across Spain.

Almost A Year

The architect behind Torrevieja’s closed Teatro Municipal has told the council that it will cost around a quarter of a million euros caused by unpaid fees and a list of essential safety work to reopen the facility. Torrevieja mayor José Manuel Dolon disclosed the figure on Wednesday but was unable to say when the complex would

be reopened, after being shut in September last year. The ruling coalition council said at the time that the theatre was running without the appropriate licenses and safety improvements were needed, but nearly a year on, the doors are still closed despite claims earlier this year of imminent reopening dates that came and went.

Counterfeit Con

Roof-Rack Fine After Car Overloaded A Catalunya driver has been penalised because the roof-rack of his car was overloaded. The Mossos d’Esquadra pulled over the vehicle on the AP-7, with the motorist telling officers that he was heading for Barcelona’s port to get a Moroccan-bound ferry. The

vehicle though was grounded due to the ‘clear risk to its stability’ caused by the huge piles of bags and suitcases, among other items, on the roof. The occupants of the vehicle were kept at the roadside until they had adjusted their cargo and

rammed as much of it as possible inside the car, jettisoning the nonessentials. They were then hit with an instant fine of 200 euros, which they paid immediately so that they could continue their journey.

Price Change

Spain's consumer prices fell 0.6 percent in July compared with the same month a year ago. The official Consumer Price Index (CPI) says the figure is 0.2 percent higher than the annual inflation rate of June when prices fell by 0.8 percent on a year-onyear basis. Food and non-alcoholic drink prices rose by 2.5 percent due to the increased prices of fresh fruits and vegetables. Prices of items related to leisure and culture fell by 0.6 percent and those related to the hotel industry rose by 0.7 percent.

Five Spaniards who made and used 200 euro fake bills, have been arrested by the Guardia Civil under Operation Kiwo. The three men and two men operated in Valencia, Murcia, and Ciudad Real by running a con which involved paying for high value items at

shops and immediately claiming they got the wrong change or an incorrect item, and then getting the money back, having slipped in a fake 200 euro note in the first place, which was not checked because of the argument they had started.

Through The Night

Over 200 people were treated last Thursday night to a perfect view of the Perseids meteor showers as they gathered at Torrevieja’s La Mata natural park. Astronomers from the Mastral

Project were on hand to explain exactly what was going on with the first sightings happened just after 11.00 pm, with a largely cloudless sky offering good viewing through the night.

Shark Beached

Emergency services have released a shark into the sea after it became stuck on Mazarrón’s Bolnuevo beach. They managed to free the creature – a Prionace Glauca, or ‘blue shark’ – after it was washed ashore and

unable to get back into the water. It was then towed out by boat to around eight miles off the beach and set free. It had grounded itself opposite the Bolnuevo beach holiday park, meaning it attracted a large number of onlookers.

90 percent of Spaniards prefer to stay in Spain for their holidays according to the "Spanish Holiday Habits" survey carried out by the Madison Market Research group. The survey shows that little has changed in the holiday habits of the average Spaniard over the last 40

years, with 50 percent of those questioned saying their favourite destination was the beach, while a third also enjoy visiting new cities and enjoying the local cuisine. One thing where Spaniards have changed over the past 20 years, however, is where they prefer

to stay, with the majority swapping the holiday home they used to own at the coast for either hotels and holiday apartments. Although they are on holiday the majority of Spaniards need to stay connected with two thirds saying they use social networks while away be it through their mobile phone, iPad or laptop. And what do they drink when on holiday? There is a runaway favourite, namely beer, but since the survey was commissioned by the Spanish Brewers' Association (Cerveceros de Espana), that is hardly a surprise!

Inspiring Simon’s Date

The Falklands War veteran Simon Weston CBE has accepted an invitation to come and speak on the Orihuela Costa. Renowned as one of the best speakers on the British 'after dinner' speaking circuit, Simon will bring his “Evening with….” Show to The Olympia Restaurant in Mil Palmeras on Friday October 7th. He recently met up with members of the Orihuela Costa Branch of The Royal British Legion (pictured between RBL secretary Kevin Reardon and RBL chairman Keith Carter) who will use the event to support the 2016 Poppy Appeal which will be officially launched across the Costa Blanca the following week in Benidorm.

Over the years since his life was forever changed on board the Sir Galahad in 1982, Simon Weston’s story has been well publicised and in 2015, he was awarded the Freedom of the City of London and in the 2016 New Years Honours, he was awarded a CBE for his charitable work. In recent years his irrepressible humour, infectious enthusiasm and engaging personality, have made him the number one choice of many companies who invite him back to speak time and again. And it will be in his capacity as a speaker, that he will be visiting Mil Palmeras in October. Simon endured years of re-constructive surgery, including 70 major

operations or surgical procedures despite which the road to physical, spiritual and mental recovery saw him active in a number of highly successful ventures. These days, he takes the chance to tell his story in order to motivate and encourage those, who like him, want to move on to the next goal, whatever it may be. October’s event will be supported by singer Rebecca Holt who will be performing a programme of well known songs popular during the war years as well as some recent popular classics. The evening, which is in support of the Royal British Legion will cost 10 euros and will include a buffet supper. More details are available on 600 228 616.

A Day To Remember

The Torrevieja-based N332 road safety project had lots of reasons to thank the Hollywood Motor Show stunt drivers who have been performing next to Zenia Boulevard, and finish there this Sunday. The generous daredevils decided to donate a clutch of tickets to help the youngsters at the Elche Children´s Home have a fun day out to remember. The three stars of the show,

David, Patrick and Christopher, were delighted to help out so that the children could experience the thrills of the event first hand and be right close to the action. Francisco Morales from N332 said, “We must think of the children during this holiday time when those with families are enjoying their time together. Many of those without a family don´t have

the same opportunities and don´t even get to leave their home”. As well as sharing news and information to encourage safer driving and hopefully save lives, the N332 project will carry on helping local charities, and with the recent launch of the new eMagazine, they will be donating some of the proceeds earned to deserving local groups in the area.

Manager Wanted For The K9 Club Charity

The K9 club charity is looking for an animal shelter manager for their new site in the Crevillente area. The position would ideally suit somebody who already has an income, as despite the post coming with rent-free accommodation, you would have to pay your bills. You do though get a modern four-bedroomed villa situated on seven a half thousand square metres of land! The K9 work would include caring for up to 20 cats and 15 dogs as well as dealing with shelter volunteers, vets and members of the public, as well as with the team of K9 foster carers. The right person or couple would also work as part of the

team of volunteers who work closely with one another to rescue and rehome abandoned animals. K9 has operated on the Costa Blanca for many years, and are a fully legal, non-profit making organisation. The organisation is run by a dedicated team of volunteers who feel strongly about animal welfare and work hard to rescue, care for and re home animals. They rely totally on public donations, fund raising and the income from their two shops to provide the money to care for the animals to the high standard which they deserve. Phone 610 832 726 for more details or email k9clubinfo@gmail.com

How Much Should Your Dog Drink? Everyone knows that humans should drink about two litres of water a day, but what about our pets? Just like with us, fluid intake is much more important than

dogs is constipation, because by not drinking all the water their bodies need, their stool becomes harder and more difficult to pass. The daily quantity of

the amount of food we give our dogs, as it is useless to carefully ration their food if they are dehydrated. Especially in a Spanish summer, it is essential to control the quantity of water our dog drinks, because a lack of hydration could trigger heatstroke. Another consequence of poor hydration in

water to give them varies, especially depending on the type of food you're giving them and the weight of the dog. So a dog that mostly eats dry food will require more fluids than one that eats wet food. However, veterinarians always recommend giving the dog dry food because wet dog food con-

tains a much higher fat content.Since the amount of food in grams is calculated based on the weight of the adult dog, knowing the approximate number of litres the dog should eat daily also depends on their weight. They are recommended to drink 60 ml of water for every kilo of their bodyweight. So a dog weighing 10 kg, for example, needs to drink 600 ml of water daily. However this is only a guideline because physical activity and climate also influence it.This means that a large breed of dog that, for example, weighs 20 kg, eats 300 to 400g per day and goes on two hour-long walks a day in which it gets a lot of exercise, instead of needing 1200 ml of water which would be the result of the above calculation (multiply 20 kg by 60 mL), actually requires at least a litre and a half per day. The difference is relatively small but very important. As for the water a puppy should drink every day, during the first three months veterinarians recommend mix-

ing puppy food with water to soften it and make it easier to chew. Then they'll also become hydrated while they eat. As the puppy begins to eat the food and drink the water separately, the equation is the same as above, multiply 60 ml of water by its total weight. For example, a 5 month old puppy weighing 1500g should drink approximately 90ml of water daily. Remember that the weather also affects this, so if temperatures are high like here in Spain, you should increase the amount of water. The water should be fresh, not too cold or warm, to help the dog maintain a suitable body temperature. Also, if you do not have the time to calculate the suitable quantity of water, it is best to just always keep the bowl full. Always make sure your dog drinks and monitor how much. Because if they do not drink the water even with the bowl full, they may be suffering from an illness or disease and you'll have to take them to the vet. The same applies if they spend all day drinking water.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

As the curtain gets set to come down on the Rio Olympics this weekend, there will be a TV void for me for a few days, after this vastly entertaining spectacle bows out for another four years until we do it all again in Tokyo. Grief councilling anybody? Despite niggles over some of the “waffling” and sub-standard commentaries from the BBC, as a whole they produced a fine package, which if you look around the internet, is the envy of sports viewers around the world. The time difference in Tokyo in 2020 will mean that the action won’t start to get going until mid-evening, but the BBC does need to learn a little lesson from this time round,

BBC Lessons From Rio

and it’s not just to do with cutting down the waffle. I have never ever come across so much “channelswitching” in a TV Olympics and I cannot understand why the Beeb didn’t do what they did for London 2012 and just turn BBC 1 into a total Olympic service. Four years ago Eastenders and other regular BBC 1 shows like Holby City were run on BBC 2 (surely a sensible idea) but this time the events at Walford were deemed more important to be kept on the main channel. It bordered on frustration and annoyance (especially if you were recording the action) that you had to have your remote at the ready to flick around, sometimes at key moments.

Also if you were watching an event on BBC 1, it was abandoned to make way for something that BBC 4 was screening or vice versa, and don’t even get me started about BBC 2 being used to fill in the gaps on BBC 1! Why? I also have sympathy for sports-haters (shame on you!). Four years ago BBC 1 news bulletins were switched to BBC 2, but this time round we got the frustration of viewers wanting the Ten O’Clock news on BBC 1 on Tuesday night having to wait the best part of two hours as the cycling massively overan due to two false starts in Jason Kenny’s crucial Kieran final. This did no favours to non-sporting viewers and somebody at the BBC should have their heads examined in not dedicating BBC 1 to uninterrupted blanket coverage, whilst offering an alternative “normal” schedule on BBC 2. Makes sense doesn’t it? After expressing annoyance at some of the BBC commentators in last week’s column, let me hand out plaudits to the still relatively new cycling duo of Simon Brotherton and Chris

Boardman, plus Sir Chris Hoy for being an absolute invision natural as an analyst and great in tandem with the lovely Clare Balding (a star again). Top marks too to the very experienced duo of Adrian Moorhouse and Andy Jameson at the pool, and athletics team lead by Steve Cram were good. In Michael Johnson, the BBC have as good an analyst as you can get on any sport, but it was frustrating at times to have too much “in-vision talk” as action was going on behind Gabby Logan’s back. Yes we love Team GB, but we want to see all of the athletes and action as well. We’re not as blinkered as Team USA supporters who just don’t seem to realise that other countries exist. Trust me, I’ve been in the States watching their Olympic coverage of both the winter and summer games, and it would make you scream. There were worrying times that the BBC veered a bit into this uncomfortable blinkered territory and it must not become a regular habit. Credit must go though to some of the BBC’s “immediate reaction” interviewers who have to ask the “how do

you feel?” question when a British competitor is hustled to their broadcast point, just seconds after finishing their competition. It’s comparatively straight forward job when you are dealing with winners, and so it was a great gig for Jill Douglas at the cycling, but it was also abundantly clear that the British cyclists were all on first name terms with her, after a number of years doing that role, and she’s good and exudes authority, as rugby union fans will know well. Phil Jones at the athletics has tons of experience behind him and a real respect for him from the British athletes, with firstname terms also abounding.

I was extremely impressed at how Jones handled a very emotional Greg Rutherford who only got bronze in the long jump last Sunday and was almost on the verge of breaking down. Jones gave him a hug and calmed him down in way that only an old hand in the game could do, and note that both Jones and Jill Douglas are not sports stars turned presenters. Both are seasoned broadcast journalists who know what they are doing as opposed to the lacklustre exswimmer Sharron Davies who always underperforms with her poolside interviews. More of the likes of Douglas and Jones please, and roll on Tokyo 2020.

Monday 22 August 9.00pm-10.00pm BBC TWO Three years have passed since Reid left the heaving maelstrom of Whitechapel for a life of quiet contemplation by the sea with his daughter. However, he finds himself drawn back to the naphtha glare of those East London streets when he learns that Isaac Bloom, a Jewish mathematician who helped Reid on two previous Whitechapel investigations, is set to hang before the week is out. Bloom’s purported crime is a vicious murder, and it is a crime of which Reid believes his old friend incapable. And

yet it was Drake's investigation that sent Bloom to the hangman's noose, so when Drake learns of Reid’s return the two men must surely come to blows. An Indian man has been found murdered at the docks, and Drake finds himself working alongside the man’s father - a Bengal Lancer by the name of Haroun Al-Qadir - to track down the young man’s killer. Meanwhile, Bloom is not the only familiar face soon to meet the hangman's noose. Long Susan languishes in Newgate Prison, awaiting retribution for her part in the Leman Street locomotive disaster of 1894.

Rookies

Tuesday 23 August 9.00pm-10.00pm ITV Seven ordinary people - from a dance teacher to a phlebotomist - are about to make a life changing decision. They’re becoming Police Officers. With exclusive access to Surrey Police, the Rookies and their families, this series reveals what it is like to be dropped on to the front line of law enforcement without a lot of experience and the impact on the Rookies loved ones. Filmed over the ‘breaking-in period’ - when the Rookies leave the safety of training school and start working on the fast response cars - this programme documents the toughest and most emotional part of the training process. As the new recruits venture out onto the streets under the watchful eye of an experienced veteran Officer, it is a baptism of fire. They come face to face with violent criminals and learn to deal with abusive members of the public who do not respect the Police. In this first episode we meet the trainees, including 29year-old Tyne, who has made a radical career move from dance instructor to trainee Police Officer. Tyne decided to follow her dreams of joining the police after witnessing her sister’s own career ambitions be frustrated by a rare degenerative illness. 19-year-old Angus, one of Surrey’s youngest ever Rookies, is leaving a close family home in rural Somerset where he worked in a call centre, to take on a career which will push him to his very limits. Whilst his school friends back home are still living for the weekend, Angus will have to grow up fast if he is to cope with a job that demands he makes life and death decisions. Shaven-headed, six foot three, nineteen Stone gym addict Antony might look like the archetypal copper, but contrary to first impressions he’s a deep thinking idealist. Antony resolved to make it in the Police so that he can help vulnerable victims of crime

Rio 2016: The top Brazilian street foods

Picanha Barbecuing meat is something the Brazilians do very

well. Churrascarias are specific barbecue restaurants which can now be found all

over Brazil, but the tradition comes from the Gauchoculture of the south, where cowboys would cook meats skewered on metal spits over hot coals, seasoned simply with rock salt. The prime cut of meat now associated with this style of cooking is picanha – the top part of sirloin steak. This has a thick layer of fat which ensures the charred, smoky meat just melts in the mouth. Pastel de queijo A crisp, deep-fried pastry, this portable snack is found mainly in the southeast of the country (particularly in São Paulo) and makes for

the perfect street food. Served hot as an accompaniment to drinks, the pastéis can be stuffed with any number of savoury fillings, from chicken or ground beef to heart of palm or melting cheeses. Sweet versions can also be found, usually flavoured with tropical fruits, chocolate or caramel. Brazilian chicken coxinha Another deep-fried classic from São Paulo, coxinha are crunchy croquettes usually made with a filling of shredded chicken and Catupiry (a soft, creamy cheese). The filling is surrounded by a layer of dough, then coated in golden breadcrumbs before frying to create the perfect crunch. Often shaped like a teardrop, this is thought to represent the shape of a chicken thigh which would have originally been used for the filling.

Cassava chips Grown across the country, the cassava plant is one of Brazil’s most-used ingredients. Often known as cassava, yuca, manioc or aipim, the whole plant is used in a variety of formats, most

commonly as a starch (tapioca) or as a vegetable. Cut into batons and fried, mandioca (oraipim) frito are sold on street food stalls almost everywhere as the Brazilian alternative to the humble potato chip.

Meals are an extremely important social activity in Spain, whether that means eating out late at night or having large family gatherings for lunch. Although Spain is faster paced than it once was, few Spaniards race through a meal on the way to an appointment. The food in Spain is varied; portions are immense, but the prices, by North American standards, are high. Whenever possible, try the regional specialties, particularly when you visit the Basque Country or Galicia. Many restaurants in Spain close on Sunday, so be sure to check ahead. Hotel dining rooms are generally open 7 days a week,

and there's always something open in big cities, such as Madrid and Barcelona, or in well-touristed areas, such as the Costa del Sol. Generally, reservations are not necessary, except at popular, top-notch restaurants. Breakfast -- In Spain, the day starts with a continental breakfast of coffee, hot chocolate, or tea, with assorted rolls, butter, and jam. Spanish breakfast might also consist of churros (fried fingerlike doughnuts) and hot chocolate that is very sweet and thick. However, most Spaniards simply have coffee, usually strong, served with hot milk: either a café con leche (half coffee, half milk) or cortado

(a shot of espresso "cut" with a dash of milk). If you find it too strong and bitter for your taste, you might ask for a more diluted café americano. Lunch -- The most important meal of the day in Spain, lunch is comparable to the farm-style midday "dinner" in the United States. It usually includes three or four courses, beginning with a choice of soup or several dishes of hors d'oeuvres called entremeses. Often a fish or egg dish is served after this, and then a meat course with vegetables. Wine is always part of the meal. Dessert is usually pastry, custard, or assorted fruit -followed by coffee. Lunch is served from 1 to 4pm, with "rush hour" at 2pm. Tapas --Tapas bars all over the country offer many of the same dishes, although pa amb tomate (grilled country bread rubbed with tomato, drizzled with olive oil, and dusted with salt) is a Catalan specialty. It sounds simple, but it tastes sublime. Likewise, bars along northern Spain’s Atlantic coast often feature the exquisite tinned seafood of Galicia, and tiny fish fried whole are a specialty on the Andalucían coast.

The weekend cook: two ways with asparagus Asparagus with anchoïade: ‘A beautifully simple starter

Asparagus with anchoïade Serves four. 200g asparagus, trimmed For the anchoïade, ½ tsp cumin seeds, 1-2 fat garlic cloves, 6 good-quality anchovy fillets in oil, drained, 60g chopped walnuts, Zest and juice of ½ lemon, 1-2 tsp red-wine vinegar, to taste, 90ml extra-virgin olive oil, 12 tsp rosemary leaves, finely chopped , 1 tsp truffle oil. First make the anchoïade. Toast the cumin in a dry frying pan for a few minutes, until fragrant, then grind to a powder in a pestle and mortar (or pulse in a blender).

Add the garlic and anchovies, and bash to a paste. Slowly pound in the walnuts bit by bit (if you add too many at once, they tend to fly out of the bowl), then transfer to a large bowl and stir in all the other ingredients. Season to taste and set aside. Break off and discard the woody ends of the asparagus stalks – the spears have a natural breaking point and should snap off easily. Bring a large pan of lightly salted water to a boil, then simmer the asparagus for three minutes, until cooked but still with some bite.

Drain, then refresh under cold water if you’re serving up later (this helps preserve that bright green colour), or serve at once with a small dipping bowl of the anchoïade on each plate and a sprinkling of salt on the asparagus. Asparagus, anchovy and parmesan bread pudding A wonderfully enveloping, comforting dish: light, fluffy and steaming hot. If you are vegetarian, omit the anchovies and use a hard cheese made with vegetable rennet. Serves four. 200g bunch asparagus, 30g unsalted butter, 5 medium free-range eggs, beaten, 500ml whole milk, 3 anchovy fillets in oil, drained and chopped (optional), ½ garlic clove, peeled and grated, 1 pinch freshly grated nutmeg 50g grated parmesan, plus an extra sprinkling for the top of the pudding, 4-5 sprigs fresh thyme, leaves picked 100g day-old sourdough bread, torn into large chunks Melted butter, to serve Heat the oven to 190C/375F/gas mark 5. Break off and discard the

woody ends of the asparagus, then cut the spears into walnut-length pieces. Heat the butter in a large saucepan and fry the asparagus until the butter has browned and the asparagus has coloured a little. To make the filling, whisk the eggs with the milk, anchovies, garlic, nutmeg, parmesan and thyme, and season generously. Butter a deep, two-litre ovenproof dish (eg, an enamel bowl, ceramic soufflé dish or non-loose-bottomed cake tin) and add the bread chunks and asparagus. Pour in the custard mix and sprinkle with extra parmesan. Leave to soak for 10 minutes, then bake for 50 minutes, until the custard is deep golden, firm and risen. Remove and leave to cool slightly (don’t worry that it sinks back a bit) then serve scoops on to warmed plates with plenty of freshly ground black pepper and a crisp green salad. For an extra lick of silkiness, drizzle over a trickle of melted butter.

Breakfast Recipie

INGREDIENTS 450g sweet potatoes 85g plain flour, ¾ tsp baking powder, ¾ tsp ground cumin, Salt, 2 eggs, separated, 70ml whole milk 20g unsalted butter, melted, plus 50g diced, for frying, 2 tsp maple syrup 4 spring onions, thinly sliced, 1 green chilli, finely chopped, 25g coriander leaves, roughly chopped 5g tarragon leaves, finely chopped. FOR THE SALAD 250g long radishes, quartered lengthways, 15g coriander leaves, 15g rocket, 2 tsp olive oil 1 tbsp lemon juice. FOR THE TOPPING 8 slices smoked streaky bacon, 2 tbsp maple syrup. Heat the oven to 220°C/425F/gas mark 7. Put the whole, unpeeled sweet potatoes on an oven tray and roast for an hour, then remove and leave to cool. Peel and discard the skin, then put the flesh in a clean J-cloth or piece of muslin. Draw up the sides, roll into a ball and squeeze out any liquid: you should be left with about 180g of flesh.Turn down the oven to 160C/320F/gas mark 2½. In a bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, cumin and three-quarters of a tea-

spoon of salt. Put the egg yolks, milk, melted butter and maple syrup in a second bowl, whisk to combine, then stir into the dry ingredients. Add the sweet potato, spring onion, chilli and herbs, and stir until smooth. Whisk the egg whites in a separate bowl until stiff, then gently fold in. Melt half the diced butter in a large frying pan on a medium heat. When it starts to foam, spoon in three heaped tablespoons of the batter and gently spread out into a pancake 7-8cm wide and 1.5cm thick. Repeat until you have three or four pancakes in the pan, then fry for three to four minutes, turning halfway, when bubbles appear in the middle. Transfer to an oven tray lined with baking paper, and repeat with the rest of the batter. Mix all the salad ingredients with an eighth of a teaspoon of salt. Heat the grill. Place the bacon on a wire rack on top of a foil-lined tray and brush with half the maple syrup. Grill for two minutes, until the bacon starts to turn crisp, then turn, brush with the remaining syrup and grill for a minute or two, until crisp.

Sorbet, ice-cream When it’s hot , pudding needs to be something cooling, and nothing does that better than ice-cream. And lollies

If you’re gearing up for the weekend’s tennis-boxing-racing-football quadrathlon, you’re going to need a frozen treat to cool you down when things heat up. And if you’re planning an escape to a delightfully empty park, you’re also going to need an ice-cream, too – if only to keep you company. Whichever you choose, it’s a win-win. Strawberry sorbet and vanilla ice-cream lollies Shop-bought ice-cream is a great timesaver here; if you have the time, by all means make your own. If you are starting with firm ice-cream, let it sit at room temperature until it’s soft

enough to spoon into the moulds. The sorbet is set by whisking it as it sits in the freezer. If you have an icecream machine and want to use that instead, churn the sorbet just until soft waves form. Makes six lollies. INGREDIENTS 260g hulled strawberries, 40g liquid glucose, 50g caster sugar, 2½ tbsp lime juice, About 120g vanilla ice-cream Put the strawberries in the small bowl of a food processor and blitz smooth. Put the glucose, sugar and lime juice in a medium saucepan on a medium heat. Stir until the sugar has dissolved, then add the strawberry

puree. Bring to a boil, cook for a minute, then take off the heat and set aside to cool. Once cool, pour into an air-tight container and freeze for three to four hours, whisking it every 30 minutes, until almost set. Spoon 20-25g sorbet into each ice-lolly holder, and tap the base against a work surface to disperse any air bubbles. Spoon 15-20g icecream on top of the sorbet, compressing it as you do. Finish with a second layer of sorbet, until almost full to the top, tap again and put a lolly stick in each one. Set in the freezer for at least five hours before serving.

SAUSAGE PARTY REVIEW

DIRECTOR Conrad Vernon, Greg Tiernan GENRE Animation SYNOPSIS Life is good for all the food items that occupy the shelves at the local supermarket. Frank (Seth Rogen) the sausage, Brenda (Kristen Wiig) the hot dog bun, Teresa Taco and Sammy Bagel Jr. (Edward Norton) can't wait... RELEASE DATE August 12, 2016 DURATION 89 mins Sausage Party follows a freethinking hot dog named Frank, voiced by Seth Rogen, who undertakes a dangerous quest after learning the horrible truth about the relationship between his fellow grocery products and the “gods” who spirit them away from

the store. The brainchild of Rogen, Jonah Hill, and Rogen’s frequent collaborator, Evan Goldberg, Sausage Party features an impressive cast of voice actors that includes Kristen Wiig as a buxom bun named Brenda, as well as Hill, Edward Norton, Michael Cera, Salma Hayek, Paul Rudd, Craig Robinson, and Danny McBride, among other familiar voices. From the film’s opening musical number – which begins innocently enough, but eventually features goose-stepping sauerkraut jars screaming “kill the juice” – there’s a sense that Rogen and company are keen on seeing how far they can actually go in an unusual project like this one. And the

answer to that question, it seems, is much farther than even the red-band trailers for the film suggest. If there was ever any question about a filmmaker’s ability to get away with more in animation than one might be able to get away with in a live-action project while still getting a wide release, Sausage Party offers some tremendous evidence of the anything-goes flexibility with animation. Make no mistake: Sausage Party is a film that could only get released in theaters as an animated feature, and everyone involved with it seems well aware of that fact. Amid all of the outrageous toilet humor, sex jokes, and ethnic-stereotype gags, though,

there’s also a surprising amount of higher-brow comedy in Sausage Party. Rogen and the film’s creative team tackle topics as complicated as the conflict between Israel and Palestine (as personified by an anthropomorphic bagel’s ongoing argument with a lavash over the course of the film) and humanity’s struggle to find a happy medium between faith and science, and they find some respectably thoughtful ways to tackle them, too. Sausage Party is clearly meant to be a parody of the more innocent animated features of recent years, but the film not only distances itself from those projects in its content, but also in its presentation.

Fevipiprant trial indicates it could halve patients’ risk of suffering asthma attacks and being admitted to hospital

Is this the Asthma drug ‘gamechange? Could this drug revolutionise treatmentt? suffers from a typical problem in the reporting of innovation in drug discovery and development. The new drug in question, Fevipiprant – developed by Novartis – will be the end result of many years of painstaking and costly research and development, yet Novartis is not credited for this innovation until 582 words into a 942word article, and, yes, that’s off the front page. The clinicians that ran the trial are critical partners, and are rightly mentioned early and often in the article. Drug R&D, however, relies on part-

nership between drug companies, clinicians, patients and regulators. In a case of wrongdoing we could expect to see Novartis in the headline of this article, but when a drug company has genuine positive impact, we don’t do a good job in assigning credit where it is due. One might argue that pharmaceutical companies are big enough to survive without public recognition, but in a post-Brexit environment, when pharma companies are reviewing their decisions about where to do R&D, little things could make a big difference. You note that, “according to the British Lung Foundation, the number of people with asthma rose sig-

nificantly between 2004 and 2012” and that the NHS considers “increased air pollution, chlorine in swimming pools and modern hygiene standards to be key factors in

the development of the disease”. Surely it would be sensible, instead of finding a “cure” for the affliction, which the drug is not, it might be wiser to tackle the environmental hazards causing the problem. Not only would asthma suffers benefit, but so too would other sectors of society, and not least the Earth itself. Asthma treatment has barely changed over 20 years, with those who cannot easily control their condition relying on inhalers or using steroids which carry a high risk of weight gain, diabetes, osteoporosis and high blood pressure. But the development of the drug, called Fevipiprant, opens up the possibility that the 250,000 people with this

more severe form of the disease could now take a pill twice a day instead of relying on those methods. It could also benefit at least another 250,000 people who have the more moderate form of the disease. Brightling hopes that, if Fevipiprant proves effective and is approved by medicines regulators, it will lead to asthmatics becoming acutely unwell less often and so needing less care, and make asthma less burdensome for the NHS, which currently spends over £1bn a year treating it. There are 5.4 million diagnosed asthmatics in the UK, of whom 1.1 million are under 15. Someone in the UK suffers a life-threatening asthma attack every ten seconds, Asthma UK says. A total of 1,418 people died

FEVIPIPRANT TRIAL The Leicester trial reported in the Lancet involved 61 people and was jointly funded by the NHS’s research arm, the National Institute for Health Research, and the European Union and also Novartis, the Swiss drug company behind Fevipiprant. It is a phase-III trial, meaning the drug has already undergone small-scale safety tests in patients, as well as initial analysis of any side effects. This trial is aimed at establishing with more precision how effective the drug is in larger numbers of patients. Brightling is leading another clinical trial into Fevipiprant’s effectiveness, which involves 850 patients, though it will not produce results until 2018, and other studies are planned.

from asthma in the UK in 2015 – more than three every day. Although 19 were aged 14 and under, the vast majority were those aged 15 and above. The total figure of 1,418 asthma deaths was 210 higher than the 1,208 seen in 2014. Females are much more likely to die than males. Last year 1,022 girls and women died compared with 396 boys and men. However, an audit of asthma deaths found more than half of those who died were only being treated for mild or moderate asthma before they passed away. The others were among those with the most severe asthma which is most resistant to treatment. “The UK has one of the highest rates of asthma prevalence in the world with over one million children suffering from the disease, so this has the potential to make a massive impact on many children’s lives. Previously, new treatments for asthma required regular injections, so this is a significant advancement,” said Prof Jonathan Grigg, a respiratory expert at the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. But he added the study’s small size meant other, larger trials needed to be carried out to establish whether the drug would be suitable for children.

Luke Ambler wants #ItsOkayToTalk to halve number of male suicides

The rugby league player behind a social media campaign urging men to talk about mental health problems says he wants to halve the rate of male suicides in five years. Luke Ambler, who plays for Halifax RLFC, launched the #itsokaytotalk campaign after the suicide this year of his brother-in-law Andy Roberts.

Celebrities including Ricky Gervais, the author Irvine Welsh and the rugby union star Danny Cipriani, as well as the former health minister Norman Lamb have backed the 26-year-old’s campaign, posting a picture doing the OK hand gesture as thousands of people tweeted their support. Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK

and men accounted for 75% of the 6,122 suicides reported in 2014, according to the latest available figures. Ambler said his brother-inlaw might still have been alive if he had somewhere to go to talk about his problems before he died. “He was at our house on Saturday having a laugh and a joke, he played football as usual on Sunday before spending

time with the family and then on Monday night, he killed himself with no explanation,” he added. In an attempt to break down the stigmas surrounding mental health, Ambler set up Andy’s Man Club, aimed at encouraging males from all walks of life to come and chat with other like-minded men in Ambler’s hometown of Halifax.

How Drugs Cause Skin Problems Indapamide is a diuretic (water tablet) used to lower blood pressure. Many people prescribed Indapamide will eventually stop the medication because of severe skin rash and other skin problems. Drugs damage the skin through a variety of effects on the body. Steroidal drugs thin the skin, and a thinner skin is more prone to injuries that will allow harmful microbes into the skin to cause disease. Steroids will also reduce the body's immune system increasing the likelihood of infections. A strong immune system prevents harmful microbes that live on the surface of the skin from infecting the skin and causing skin disease. Steroids and similar medications that reduce the immune system such as omeprazole for treating acid reflux cause skin problems as a long term side effect. Other drugs such as antibiotics will also reduce immunity

and cause skin diseases, but in a different way. Antibiotics destroy beneficial bacteria in our gut that form part of our immune system. These beneficial bacteria prevent harmful bacteria from colonising our gut to cause infections. Harmful bacteria such as streptococcus will produce toxins that cause skin disease. Antibiotics will also increase hypersensitivity reactions that increase the skin's sensitivity to other compounds and cause skin disease. Other drugs that cause hypersensitivity reactions include anti-inflammatories such as naproxen as well as statins. Some drugs cause skin dam-

age by increasing the rate of renewal of the skin, causing excessive shading of the skin which leaves the skin dry and scaly. Drugs used to treat cancer are notorious for such problems. Drugs that affect fat metabolism will also cause dryness of the skin and other skin problems. Statins lower cholesterol and is known to cause dryness of the skin. The skin requires essential nutrients to stay healthy, including MSM, Zinc, Silica, and Manganese. MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) is the most vital nutrient for skin health because it helps

the skin produce collagen, and Collagen provides support to the skin, as well as

the bones, joints, nails, hair and the organs of the body. For A Full Body

Would you swim in a green pool?

Olympic officials have said that though they don’t know what has caused the water to go green, it is nothing to worry about and will be fixed soon. But a pool treatment expert has warned that he would not go in the water while the health of the pool is still uncertain. “The water is not supposed to be green,” said Ralph Riley, vice-chairman of the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (Pwtag). “If it has gone green and it’s due to a lack of disinfectant, then that means there is some sort of implied threat or risk. “If they’re saying that’s not the case, then it does point towards algae,” said Mr Riley. But if there’s algae “then that implies there’s been a break-

down in the disinfectant process anyway”, meaning that the pool could be unclean and not properly treated, he said. Whatever the cause, the systems that are built to automatically keep the water clean and safe had clearly broken, Mr Riley said, and the pool wouldn’t be safe until it was clear that they were working again. Mr Riley said definitively that he would not swim in the pool. Howard Gosling, an independent pool and spa adviser and former chairman of Pwtag, said that he too would not swim in the pool. "If there's not enough chlorine in the water, you don't know what bugs will be growing in there," he said. "I would

certainly – even though the divers don't stay in there very long – I certainly would be reluctant to go into it." Rio spokesman Mario Andrada said the green was caused "by a proliferation of algae". "This was because of heat and a lack of wind," he said. "We did all the chemical tests. The pool will be blue today. "If it were green and yellow, we would know it was a patriotic thing," Andrada joked, referring to Brazil's national colours. Canada’s team leader Mitch Geller said that he suspected a broken system had led the algae to come out, and that the warm and sunny day had allowed it to multiply quickly.

Dave’s Reason For Being Down, Down DAVE the barman was looking down in the dumps the other evening. He was looking so down that we customers could have reflected his mood by playing the rock classic Down Down on the pub's jukebox. However, the hostelry was not in possession of that great ditty by Status Quo. And, perhaps more to the point, we didn't have a jukebox either. But there was no denying that Dave the barman was on a downer. 'It's you flaming lot!' he declared when he ceased sulking silently. 'It's bad enough that none of you ever buys a Bloody Mary or any other bloody drink but you've also forgotten what today is.' We pubsters looked at each other blankly. Daft

Barry even piped up: 'I think today is Tuesday.' But, of course, that was of no help. 'You'll have to give us a clue, mein host,' we chorused. 'We've overlooked something which is obviously important to you. But is it any wonder that we might sometimes forget things considering what busy lives we lead.' 'Busy lives!' echoed Dave the barman. 'Don't make me laugh!' But he was far from laughing You lot do NOT lead busy lives,' he declared, slamming his fist down hard on the bar top and in the process waking up Ol' Red Eyes who'd been dreaming about . . . well, who knew what the old codger dreamed about. Indeed, Ol' Red Eyes, our former guide and mentor, claimed that he never ever dreamed. Mind you, he also

claimed that he never ever slept. That was a blatant lie, of course, because these days Ol' Red Eyes spent all his days and nights fast asleep. The only times he was awake was when one of us gently poured liquids down his arid throat to hydrate him. But then there were the few occasions when Ol' Red Eyes actually died. It is arguable, of course, that being dead was like being asleep. But who really knew? Certainly, the doctors didn't. They would scratch their heads in puzzlement when the old codger, after being pronounced dead several long minutes previously, would let out a deep yawn, open one rheumy eye and ask to be gently helped down off the mortuary trolley.

Once back at home (the pub), Ol' Red Eyes would be asked where he thought he had been while he was flatlining. 'None of your business!' he would snarl. 'Now if you don't mind, I have a class to teach.' Ol' Red Eyes had been an English master once upon a time but those days had long been gone on the night that Dave the barman had his hissy fit. 'I slave away behind this bar day after day,' mein host complained. 'All I ask is for some recognition of what I do for you.' We pubsters looked sheepishly at each other and chorused: 'Sorry, Dave, but you're going to have to tell us why this day is so special to you.' Dave the barman sighed and then announced. 'It was

exactly 40 years ago today that I came to this town with just a knapsack on my back. Now I own the whole building.' 'Wow! You have done so well, Dave,' we chorused. And then Daft Barry piped up: 'And what did you have in the knapsack, Dave?' Dave the barman shrugged. 'I had one million quid in the knapsack but that has nothing to do with anything.' 'Enough!' Mrs S has just shouted down my ear. 'I've been reading this Courier column over your shoulder and you've just sacrificed the truth for a very old joke. Now, tell your readers exactly why the day was special to Dave the barman.' 'Okay, okay,' I mumbled. 'It had nothing to do with knapsacks and loadsa money. Dave the barman was miffed

because we'd all missed his birthday.' But, to cut a short story even shorter, it all worked out very nicely when the pub lights suddenly dimmed and in walked our leader and mentor Andromeda Arkwright pushing a trolley (not a mortuary one) on top of which was perched a huge birthday cake with candles in the shape of beer pumps ablaze. Of course, we'd all been in on the practical joke. We'd known that August 16th was Dave the barman's birthday. We'd only pretended we weren't aware of his big day in order to intensify his surprise 'What a wizard wheeze,' chortled Dave the barman. 'You certainly had me hoodwinked.’ 'Yeah,' agreed Daft Barry. 'April Fool!'

Is Your Volkswagen At Risk? It can probably be unlocked by hackers!

Almost 100 million cars made by Volkswagen are vulnerable to numerous hacks that could let thieves unlock them remotely through a wireless signal, security researchers have revealed. The "worrying" flaws in the cryptography of the physical keys have been around since the 1990s, and could be used to unlock millions of cars and drive them away. The two flaws in Volkswagen's keyless entry software are present in

almost every car Volkswagen has sold since 1995, according to the researchers at the University of Birmingham, including models from Audi, Ford, Fiat, Skoda, Citroen and Peugeot. All an attacker requires to exploit them and unlock the cars is a radio that can be made for £30 with a small control board and a radio receiver. One of the vulnerabilities is in Volkswagen's computer system, which could allow a

thief to steal the car without the owner and key being nearby, unlike with similar key fob attacks. The researchers managed to reverse engineer a part of Volkswagen's network and get hold of a cryptographic key that is shared with millions of Volkswagen cars. Using the radio, they could then intercept the unique signal given off by each car's key fob that together could be used to clone the key, access the car and drive it away.

Dont Fall Asleep Behind The Wheel Reaction time after two hours at the wheel decreases by 86%

ONE in four Spanish drivers admits to having felt sleepy or extremely tired on short journeys, a report by the country’s Royal Automobile Club, the RACE, reveals. Around seven in 10 of the drivers who took part in the study say they make fairly short trips in the car during

their holidays, and 55% confess they often do not stop for a break every two hours. In fact, 6% say they never take a break when driving, continuing for several hours at a time. The survey, jointly run by the RACE and the Association of Soft Drinks (ANFABRA), formed part of

an advertising campaign urging motorists to keep themselves hydrated at the wheel by drinking plenty of fluids. The risk of suffering an accident increases by 12% after the first two hours of driving, since the motorist’s attention starts to wander and he or she fails to notice 30% of what goes on around him or her. Reaction time after two hours at the wheel decreases by 86%, not quite double, and distraction is thought to be one of the prime causes of fatal accidents along with fatigue, drink and drugs. The campaign calls for motorists to get out of the car at least once every two hours, stretch, take a walk and drink something with glucose in it. Drivers should take extra care on secondary roads, even if they know them well, because the RACE says that’s where 80% of accidents happen. Roads with two-way traffic – single carriageways, but not one-way streets – are the most likely to tire drivers out, in 60% of cases. On long journeys, 31% of drivers admit they suffer extreme tiredness or become sleepy at the wheel. Please take a break when driving.

BlueMoon Solutions is the computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca. BlueMoon Solutions come to you at home or work, our personal service covers from Alicante to Pilar de la Horadada.

Richard moved to Spain ten years ago having left his management background behind in the UK and decided to use his IT skills to help home users and small businesses with their PC problems. ADVICE: Ron was having issues printing emails within the outlook.com website.

Hi Richard. Since I was 'forced' to change my Hotmail to outlook I cannot access any Hotmail on my mobile. I have managed to find both addresses on my laptop but cannot sync them on my phone. Microsoft and other sites tell me nothing. My Hotmail account is linked to Amazon and sites like that so do you think it would be a problem to delete both Hotmail / Outlook accounts and start again? Thanks.Lynda.

Hi Lynda, I think that deleting and starting again is probably a bit over the top and unnecessary, Microsoft have a great app that you can use to access your Outlook accounts on your mobile device, it’s called, imaginatively – OUTLOOK – you should be able to find it in the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store, depending on your flavour of mobile device. Once downloaded and installed it is very simple to configure to access your accounts.

Hi Richard, I am having trouble printing e-mails in Outlook. If, say, I receive an e-mail of 3 pages which I need to print out, when I press CTRL P to print, I get the full inbox page including side panels, and only one page of e-mail. Any ideas on how to enable me to print without the side panels, and get the 3 pages of the mail?I am on Windows 10.Many thanks, Ron.

Hey Ron, thanks for taking the time to email us, this is a common question and thankfully the answer is pretty simple, rather than pressing CTRL + P to print you should click on the the dots (…) in the menu bar within the email message that you want to print, and then choose the print option. This method will print just the email out, your method (as you have found) will print everything on the screen, including the side panels of the website. Have a look at the image below to see exactly what I mean.

The last of the cycling season’s grand tours, the Vuelta a Espana promises to end the season with a bang, as the race gets going tomorrow (Saturday) in Ourense. The favourite will be three times Tour de France winner and Rio Olympic Road Race bronze

medallist Chris Froome (Team Sky). Froome himself has said he has "unfinished business" with the race. And apart from a natural ambition

to try to become Britain's first winner of Spain's Grand Tour and the first rider to win both the Tour and the Vuelta since Bernard Hinault in 1978, the events of last year's Vuelta when he broke a bone in his foot early on the ultra-mountainous stage in Andorra are

surely still uppermost in Froome's mind. Should Froome take the lead, a big factor in his favour, as it was in the Tour de France, there’s an excep-

tionally strong Team Sky lineup to back him up that includes Pete Kennaugh, Mikel Kwiatkowski, Leo Konig and Mikel Landa. That's even without the experienced Nicolas Roche, missing from Sky's Vuelta line-up after falling ill in Rio. Finishing on Sunday September 11th, La Vuelta will be made up of 21 stages and will cover a total distance of 3,315.4 kilometres. In total there are ten summit finishes, one more than last year, with the first on stage three, a short but very steep ascent to Ezaro. After a week of constantly rolling, technical terrain in Galicia, the 'flat' stage eight finish on la Camperona actually concludes with an 8.5-kilometre

climb, with some sections at 22 per cent. Stage 10 to Covadonga, eleven to Peña Cabarga, 13 to Urdax and 14 to the mountain top finish of the Aubisque could well all but resolve the overall classification a week before the race reaches Madrid. The Northern Costa Blanca will feature at the business end of the action as the race pretty much snubs the southern part of Spain this year. Javea and Calpe host the stage 19 individual time trial over 37 kilometres on Friday September 9th, and then the penultimate and crucial stage 20 starts the next day from Benidorm and goes into the mountains of Aitana.

The Mar Menor’s La Manga golf club has been handed one of Spain’s most prestigious golfing awards. The Royal Spanish Golf Federation gifted the world-famous resort with the ‘Merit in Golf’ award in recognition of its contribution to the sport in Spain, Europe and worldwide. Built more than four decades ago, the club has hosted the Spanish Open five times and has become a recognised course among the world’s elite sportsmen. Jose Asenjo, general manager of La Manga Club, said: “It is a great honour for us to be given this honour. “The award is recognition

for all the hard work and effort that has been made over the last four decades to make La Manga Club the favourite destination for golfers in Spain and Europe.” The club was most recently named as Spain’s best golf hotel at the World Golf Awards for the second year running and was voted the best golf resort in Spain by Today’s Golfer readers for the fifth successive year. The 1,400 acre resort features three 18-hole courses, a nine-hole academy course and a recently opened Leadbetter Golf Academy – the only one in mainland Spain.

Paddle surfing is coming to the Orihuela Costa this Sunday at Playa Glea in Campoamor with up to a hundred competitors on the regional Alicante circuit expected to take part. Unlike traditional surfing where the rider is sitting until a wave

comes, stand up paddle boarders maintain an upright stance on their boards and use a paddle to propel themselves through the water. The longest test on Sunday will go up to fifteen hundred metres in the elite category.

Bowling Best La Siesta Bowls club in Torrevieja held their annual internal competition last weekend which produced some very close encounters. Founded in 1990, the club staged the contest at their regular venue on Calle Rossini in La Siesta, with Irene Mangan and David Davies winners of

Marcus’s Gold An British-born man with an English father and German mother, who is now a Spanish national living on Mallorca brought an international flavour with gold medal success for Spain in the Rio Olympics this week. Kayaker Marcus Cooper won the K-1 open-water 1,000-metre race in a time of three minutes, 31.44 seconds – barely a tenth of a second ahead of the silver winner, the Czech Republic’s Josef

Dostál, who crossed the finishing line in three minutes, 32.14 seconds. Marcus was born in Oxford, but grew up in Mallorca where his parents moved when he was very young, and has taken Spanish citizenship. His win was against the odds, since the favourites were Danish René Holten – last year’s world champion – and German Max Hoff, who took the silver in London 2012.

Justin Rose Blooms In Rio 2016 For those you who did not have the opportunity to watch Sunday’s historic fourth round of the return of golf to the Olympics, these were the final moments. There was nothing to separate Britain’s Justin Rose and Sweden’s Henrik Stenson through 71 holes with the former Ryder Cup partners both 15-under par as they stepped on to the 18th green at the Olympic Golf Course. However, after Rose’s third shot, an extraordinary pitch from 38 yards that landed within three feet of the pin, it was Stenson who blinked. The Open champion three putted from 20 feet to give Rose two putts for the first Olympic gold medal in golf since 1904. He would only need one. The 36-year-old Briton finished with a five-under 67 to hold off a stern challenge from the in-form Stenson and an inspired

charge by Matt Kuchar, becoming the first Olympic gold medalist since George Lyon of Canada won the competition at Glen Echo Country Club at the St Louis Olympics. After sinking the winning putt Rose raised his right fist in the air and embraced Stenson before finding his wife Kate in the family zone behind the 18th hole. “It’s a dream come true,” Rose said. “I’ve been thinking about Rio for a long, long time. I’ve been dreaming about coming here for a few years now. I was hoping my ranking would allow me to compete in the Olympic Games. “I came here in good form and I felt excited about competing, excited about giving it 100%. Then when I actually got down to Rio and experienced the whole vibe of the Olympics, to come out of it with a medal is incredible.

To come out of it with gold, unbelievable.” Stenson, playing the best golf of his career after the duel with Phil Mickelson at Royal Troon last month, started the final round one shot off the pace and had shot a bogey-free round with four birdies through 13 holes. But he was forced to summon the trainer to help with back issues on the 14th hole, which left him face down on the tee for a brief spell. He went on to bogey the hole. “I didn’t make the best swings there for a little while but it wasn’t hindering me too much,” Stenson said. “But it’s not something you plan to have worked on out on the course. “It did kind of put me out of rhythm a little bit, but I was still there till the end. It was just down to whoever made a birdie on the last, otherwise we would have been out for a play-

off.” Both players held off a fierce challenge by Kuchar, the American who started the day five-under in a tie for seventh but shot a 63 to tie the course record and secure the bronze. Named to the US team only after Jordan Spieth withdrew due to concerns over the Zika virus, (yet he was there commentating with Rory McIlroy), Kuchar had already moved into the bronze position after going four under on the front nine. But when he followed two excellent shots on the 10th with a 13-foot putt for eagle, the gold was suddenly within touching distance. “My heart started pounding out of my chest,” Kuchar said. He might have done even better, but he threeputted on the 16th and left a 17-foot birdie putt short on the 18th to finish with a 13-under 261. Afterwards, he cried on the medal

KNOW YOUR RULES

TITTER ON THE TEE

Ron is playing with Alan and Graham when Rodney has putted to with an inch of the hole and Alan said “pick it up it’s good”. They were playing an individual Stapleford competition, is this correct and legal?

A new member walks into the Golf Club House and takes a seat next to a very attractive Lady member. He gives her a quick glance then casually looks at his watch for a moment. The woman notices this and asks: “Have you missed your Tee time?” 'No', he replies, “I just got this state-of the-art watch, and I was just testing it.” The intrigued woman says: “A state-of-the-art watch, what's so special about it?” The member explains: “It uses alpha waves to talk to me telepathically.” The lady says, “What's it telling you now?” “Well, it says you're not wearing any panties”, replied the member. The woman giggles and replies: “Well it must be broken, because I am wearing panties!” The new member smiles, taps his watch and says: “This thing's an hour fast!”

QUESTION

A: No. It is not legal – all putts must be holed out in any Individual Stableford Competition. B: Yes. If your partner tells you to pick it up you must. C: Yes. Always to keep up with the pace of play. NO. In determining the nearest point of relief accurately, it is recommended that the player use the club, address position, direction of play and swing (right or left-handed) that he would have used had the obstruction or condition not been there. For example, the player has interference from an immovable obstruction and, were it not for the obstruction, he would have used a right-handed stroke with a 4-iron to play the ball from its original position towards the green. To determine the nearest point of relief accurately, he should use a right-handed stroke with a 4-iron and the direction of play should be towards the green.

ANSWER

A: One of the first rules in the book – Rule 1-1 States that the ball must be played until it’s in the hole. The only exception to that is to concede a putt is in Match Play. No gimmies in Stroke Play under the rules.

stand while carefully inspecting his medal. A week of lively galleries at the new course within the Marapendi reserve in Barra da Tijuca peaked with a sold out crowd of 15,000 on a balmy Sunday afternoon with a steady ocean breeze. The showdown between Rose and Stenson, who went head to head with neither extending their advantage to more than one shot the entire round, offered a storybook ending to a week that began in doubt – with many of the sport’s top stars having withdrawn. Stenson said “To call yourself an Olympian is something very special, to be an Olympic medalist is even more special. I’m very pleased that I went here. It was the experience of a lifetime.” During the week Rose said: “The atmosphere is more like a Ryder Cup than a major but it’s more

unique than either of those two. You can’t compare it to anything else.” With many first-time spectators in the crowd – golf is not popular in Brazil – the lighter side of the Olympics’ grand experiment reared itself in unexpected ways. When Rose’s drive off the 2nd tee sailed into the gallery, a fan picked it up thinking she could keep it. Rose was allowed to drop because the exact finishing spot was unknown. Yet little else went wrong for the Englishman, who started the week with the first Olympic hole-in-one and ended it with a historic gold. He had a few fitness issues this year. In the back of his mind he wanted to be 100% for Rio. So he did a lot of hard work and sacrificed a lot of hours in the gym just to really get himself feeling good. Then he achieved his dream.

Torry Set And Ready

Monte Blow

Benferri 1 CD Torrevieja 2

Two friendly wins at Callosa (1-0) last week, and then at Benferri last Saturday night have set the stage for the serious league business which kicks off on Sunday as CD Torrevieja face newly promoted Almoradi, whose squad is jam packed with former Torry stars like winger Cristian Sanchez. The home side though has been boosted by the news that one of last season’s few success stories, the 22year-old British striker, Lewis Allen, has signed up for the current campaign, despite being looked at by higher division clubs, and also getting involved with some pre-season training

at Atlético Saguntino. At Benferri, new manager Correa fielded what again looked like being his league line up for the opener against Almoradi, with the only omission being Luis Carlos who was suffering with a cold. Pastor played a captain's role whilst striker Zapata impressed with fast, strong runs down the channels. Lewis Allen was lively and only denied by a brave Vivanco from point blank range in the early exchanges. However, first blood was drawn by Benferri on the quarter hour when a deft Guille lob completely deceived Marcano for an excellent goal.

The lead lasted a mere two minutes before Carrasco drove home to level affairs. It was left to the cultured left foot of Adrian to settle the contest when he expertly placed his right footed free kick against the post and into the net, with once more the brave Vivanco getting within a whisker of stopping it. This was a resolute Torry display with a much better level of bite and spite in the middle of the park. Adrian was always available and used the ball intelligently. Matheus is sharp and direct, likely to cause problems week in week out. Zapata and Lewis Allen are predators with much

courage and an eager willingness to work for the benefit of the team. When the physical Salamanca made his entrance for the final quarter of an hour, he added even further aggression to the attack, although his three left foot blasts from outside the box were very high over the mark. This Sunday’s encounter at the Vicente Garcia stadium against Almoradi has a 7.00 pm kick-off, with season tickets for the 20 home league schedule available at the gate on match day at a cost of 125 euros. Fans are asked to come early as delays are expected as the season tickets are bought at the turnstiles.

Almoradi’s Big Day After 19 years, CD Almoradi are back in the third division with a tasty local encounter at CD Torrevieja this Sunday. They warmed up very nicely last Saturday with a six-nil thrashing of neighbours Daya Nueva Athletic for the inaugural preseason Segurlab trophy, which was played at Daya Nueva. That means they go into league action this weekend with a 100 percent record from their friendly matches. Saul with two goals, plus Obele, Manu, Keko and Pablo all got onto the Almoradi scoresheet at Daya Nueva, with a clutch of familiar local names in their squad brought in by manager Fran Rodríguez including the exCD Torrevieja captain Burguillos; Coco from Orihuela CF; ex-Torry and Orihuela man Sergi Murcia as well as Rafa Canales and Gonzalo from Benferri (who played for Fran Rodríguez when he was at Benferri).

Almoradi skipper Fran Ortíz received the Segurlab trophy from Daya Nueva

mayor, Maria Teresa Martínez, and her Almoradi counterpart, Jaime Pérez.

Thader Build Up Rojales-side CD Thader kick off their Valencia Regional Preferente Group Three campaign at home to Villajoyosa on Sunday September 4th, and have been building up for the new campaign with a series of friendlies which include a trip to Santa Pola tomorrow evening (Saturday) with a 7.30pm kick-off. Thader’s matches have seen a 3-0 victory over Kelme Juvenil, as well as well as defeats against higher league

sides Orihuela and Crevillente. Season tickets are available from just 25 euros and all of Thader’s

home games will be on Sunday mornings. For more details, call Lloyd on 688 438 773.

CD Montesinos new manager Camacho, has suffered a setback in his pre-season preparation as his former club, Deportivo Orihuela, have blocked him from bringing in five players over to Montesinos. Camcho though is hopeful of securing

three immediate replacements, and saw his side draw one-all with Catral in a friendly last Friday. Both sides (Monte pictured) made multiple changes and Monte also missed a number of key players including striker Vaz and Fernando.

Locals Join Torry CD Torrevieja has announced that local players Costa and Matheus, who have been involved in pre-season training with the club, have been included in the first team squad by coach Gabriel Correa for the forth-

coming season. 23-year-old defender Costa played for Torrevieja CF in the 1st Regional division last season, whilst 20-year-old w i n g e r Mattheus was also part of the Torrevieja CF team in the last campaign.

Premier Preview After tonight’s match at Old Trafford, early doors tomorrow sees United’s rivals and equally mega spending Man City travel down the M6 to Stoke City, writes JOHN MCGREGOR (continued from Back Page). The Potters modestly drew 1 -1 at newbies Middlesborough last Saturday, whilst City only just overcame Sunderland 2 – 1 in injury time at the Etihad, surprisingly asking all sorts of questions of Pep Guardiola’s super strength side, until Tuesday night’s Romanian demolition job. Put aside the two Manchester sides, as the match of the weekend is tomorrow night as champions Leicester entertain Arsenal, one of the few teams to beat the Foxes emphatically last season. Coming back down to Planet Earth, Leicester surprisingly lost away to wayward Prem returnees Hull last weekend, but then Arsenal were blown away by a Liverpool hurricane. The scoreline of 4 – 3 flattered the Gunners really with two late goals to save some face, but losing 4 – 1 at home before your own faithful fans is not a good way to start the season. Game on! Promoted Burnley didn’t start well losing their first game 1 – 0 at home to Swansea, and now have the doubtful privilege of entertaining lively Liverpool tomorrow. Kop King Klopp’s kids looked awesome at the Emirates smashing four goals past an astounded Arsenal in eighteen astounding second half minutes, and Burnley must be quaking! Tottenham drew their opener at Everton and host problematic Palace tomorrow. After the traumatic endof-season performances when Spurs slipped to third – behind Arsenal – great things are expected of Mauriccio Pochettino’s players this season, and everything is in place to succeed. But Palace have carried on from where they left off in their disastrous calendar year of 2016, this time losing 1 – 0 at home to West Brom. New signing Andros Townsend from Newcastle was unable to make a difference, while Palace’s offer of £30m for Liverpool’s Christian Benteke has been refused… so far. N.B. Klopp is said to be wanting rid. At Selhurst Park questions are now being asked of manager Alan Pardew - and it was all going so well last year. Another key all-London clash is Watford v Chelsea: the 1 – 1 draw at Southampton provided a reasonable start for the Hornets, but now all eyes are on Antonio Conte and his animated antics on the Chelsea touchline. The Italian seems to have relit the dampened Blue fuse at Stamford Bridge and got the big names fired up again: both Eden Hazard and Diego Costa scored in the narrow 2 – 1 win over West ham on Monday to get Chelsea off to a great start to the season. On paper Watford don’t look a huge problem, but the usual unpredictable rules apply. With Newcastle gone, it’s left to promoted Middlesborough to provide the north –east local derby on Sunday as they entertain Sunderland , complete with new manager David Moyes. Everyone here has a lot to prove, including Boro’s new Basque manager Aitor Karanka. Late on Sunday afternoon, West Ham play their first match in their new home, the ‘old’ Queen Elizabeth Olympic stadium – now to be known, rather unimaginatively as the London Stadium. Bournemouth are the visitors in a little bit of history and the match should provide a great new start for the Hammers and their inspirational manager Slaven Bilic, having narrowly lost at Chelsea on Monday.

Elche Arrival

The 23-year-old Athletic Bilbao striker, Guillermo Fernandez has signed a two year contract with Elche in a deal which sees Bilbao reserving an option to get him back at the end of each of his two seasons. His last campaign saw him go out on loan to Segunda division side Leganés, with five goals in his 23 outings, and he could well link up with Sergio León for tomorrow evening’s Segunda division home opener against Rayo Vallecano (7.00 pm kick-off). León’s chances of a move to another club seem to be receding as Elche are holding firm on the valuation of last season’s top scorer in the division.

La Liga Season Begins There will be plenty of familiar faces when La Liga kicks off the 2016-2017 season this weekend, with eight sides in Spain's top flight having new men in their respective dugouts. The biggest shock was Villarreal's decision to sack Marcelino Garcia just a week before his side's Champions League qualifying round and replace him with the former Elche coach, Fran Escriba. Escriba bounces straight back into club management just five months after being sacked by his former club Getafe, who ended up being relegated to the Segunda division. On the field, La Liga champions Barcelona will meet last season's 10th-placed side, Real Betis at the Camp Nou tomorrow. Team captain Andres Iniesta (knee) and defender Jeremy Mathieu (hamstring) are out with injuries and newcomers midfielder Denis Suárez and Lucas Digne are expected whilst Neymar is away at the Rio Olympics on Brazil international duty. Champions League holders, Real Madrid open up on Sunday at the Anoeta Stadium when they take on Real Sociedad. Real could have Cristiano Ronaldo ready to start after his recent injury as well as Karim Benzema, who is rumoured to be coming off the bench as newcomer Alvaro Morata, who was bought back from Juventus this summer, is being developed as a future star by head coach Zinedine Zidane.

Torres Feels Betrayed Fernando Torres believes he was unfairly portrayed as a "traitor" by Liverpool following his departure to Chelsea. The 32-year-old, who became a fan-favourite at Anfield after scoring 65 goals in 102 league appearances for the club, moved to Chelsea in January 2011 for a then-British transfer record of £50m. In a new book by Simon Hughes entitled 'Ring of Fire: Liverpool FC into the 21st Century - the players' stories', Torres explains the sequence of events that led to that move. Despite enjoying huge personal success during his first three seasons at Liverpool, Torres became unsettled at the direction the club was taking as a potential takeover loomed and sought to have talks with managing director Christian Purslow in the summer of 2010. Torres wanted to know if the club's financial position would lead to key players - including himself - being sold, but was left frustrated by the sale of Javier Mascherano to Barcelona soon afterwards. "Comolli told me that the new owners (FSG), they had an idea of how to spend their investment," says Torres. "They wanted to bring in young players, to build something new. I was thinking to myself, this takes time to work. It takes two, three, four, maybe even 10 years. "I didn't have that time. I was 27 years old. I did not have time to wait. I wanted to win. Here we are five years later and they are still trying to build - around the same position in the league as when I left." Torres admits he did speak to thenLiverpool boss Kenny Daglish about the possibility of leaving - but insists that was only after the club had begun discussions with Chelsea. A source from within the club subsequently leaked that Torres had "verbally requested" a transfer and the striker felt this was a betrayal of his trust.

BARCA

Super Barca Arda Turan scored twice and Lionel Messi once as Barcelona earned a 3-0 second-leg Wednesday victory over Sevilla to win the Spanish Super Cup 5-0 on aggregate, after taking the first match 2-0, on Sunday. Turkey midfielder Turan slotted in the first goal at the Nou Camp from Messi's through pass in the 10th minute. Turan chipped in his second shortly after the break, with Messi guiding in a sublime header for the third. It is the first time Barcelona have won the Super Cup since 2013. The two-legged match usually pitches the league champions against the Copa del Rey winners. However, as Luis Enrique's team won both trophies last season, Sevilla took part as Copa del Rey runnersup.

City’s Sterling Performance On Tuesday evening a powerful-looking Man City thrashed Steaua Bucharest 5 – 0 away in the first leg of the Champions League qualifying round, writes JOHN MCGREGOR. City striker Sergio Aguero scored a hat-trick but somehow managed to miss two penalties in the first half, as Nolito and David Silva scored the other two. England midfielder Raheem Sterling carried the brunt of the criticism of the country’s dismal performance in France, but at last turned in another impressive performance for City. Sterling made the first for Aguero and under new manager Pep Guardiola is at last looking like the £49m player bought last year from Liverpool. In direct contrast out-of-favour England goalkeeper Joe Hart was again dropped in favour of old Elche favourite Willy Caballero, and appears to have no future at the Etihad. The second leg in Manchester is on Wednesday.

Joe Hart Open Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart is considering a move away from the club after being dropped for the first two games under Pep Guardiola. Everton and Spanish side Sevilla are interested in taking the England star. With just two weeks left of the transfer window, Hart, 29, is only interested in a loan move in order to examine his options. Barcelona's Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Claudio Bravo have been linked with moves to City. It is understood Guardiola and Hart, who knows he has no future at the club, have not

WIN SUPER CUP!!! The Latest Sport Headlines FOOTBALL Former Fifa president Joao Havelange has died at the age of 100. The Brazilian was predecessor to Sepp Blatter at world football's governing body, serving from 1974 to 1998. He resigned as Fifa's honorary president in April 2013 following an investigation into bribery allegations and was admitted to hospital the following year with a lung infection. He was an International Olympic Committee (IOC) member from 1963 until 2011, resigning because of ill health.

Misfiring Gunners Mahrez Signs Up! Riyad Mahrez has signed a new Leicester contract tying him to the Premier League champions until 2020. But news of his new deal means Leicester have managed to keep hold of last season's PFA Player of the Year and Football Writers' Award winner Jamie Vardy. N'Golo Kante did leave for Chelsea after his release clause was activated, but Wes Morgan, Kasper Schemiechel and Andy King have all signed new contracts this summer.

Arsenal need people like Piers Morgan as one of their fans, with the exMirror editor and failed US TV star fitting the bill perfectly as one of those celebrities who never quite make it, writes JOHN MCGREGOR. That is the story of Arsenal over the last decade since the great

To Move Abroad built up any kind of relationship, with Guardiola saying on Friday that Hart does not have the time to become the kind of 'sweeper-keeper' he is looking for. "I am not saying he's not able to do it with training he can do it," said Guardiola on Friday. "With time. But his time is now. It's not about what happens in six months, seven months." Hart has made nearly 350 appearances for City in all competitions since joining them from Shrewsbury in 2006. hart made mistakes against Wales and Iceland as England were knocked out.

Thierry Henry and Denis Bergkamp days. Yes, sure, Gooners, I know you twice won the FA Cup recently and Spurs didn’t (I’m not a fan of either, hon-

est) , but to be a top class English contender today your team just has got to win the Premier League now and again. Even modest Midlanders Leicester City did it last season to surprisingly join the top table of the Manchesters, United and City, and Chelsea twice since the Gunners in 2003/4: but not Arsenal despite an array of highly expensive and paid stars. On Sunday came a new low, perfectly designed to get the anti-Arsene alliance arming their ancient Flintlocks as Arsenal lost the first game of the season 4 – 3 at the mightily-impressive Emirates stadium. After reasonably leading 1 – 0 at half-time to a decent Theo Walcott goal on the half hour, the Red roof suddenly fell in as the second half started. An unbelievable four goals rained in past hapless goalkeeper Petr Cech over a pulsating 18 minute spell. The goals came from three different playe r s , what must that have been like to watch for Arsenal fans frustrated from last season when nothing happened – again. In direct contrast to the Manchesters, Arsene

Wenger has bought nobody important in the close season, presumably content to try and re-motivate the same team that finished second-best once again last year. The club is packed with ‘top class’ players who never quite perform to their vaunted potential: Ozil, Giroud and Sanchez come to mind – and then there’s Oxley Chamberlain, Welbeck, Ramsey, Cazorla… and Wilshere (sigh). I almost sound like the disenchanted, frustrated Arsenal supporters I know. The amount of top class strikers linked to coming to the Emirates are endless:Higuain, Vardy, Mahrez, even Luis Suarez two years ago, but they never come. Arsenal would win a gold medal for always having their top class players out injured. Are their medical team treating a team of hypochondriacs? Jack Wilshere’s arm is always up before he hits the ground, and of course is out again for the start of this season. Would you believe his last 90 minutes for Arsenal was on 23 September – 2014. And Roy Hodgson took him to France! There’s a huge evening for Arsenal tomorrow as they visit the champions Leicester – losing would sound the alarm bells, and bring the vultures circling the Emirates.

FOOTBALL Liverpool have rejected an offer worth £30m from Crystal Palace for striker Christian Benteke. The bid of £23m up front plus £7m in add-ons follows a previous offer of £25m, which was turned down. Benteke, 25, has fallen out of favour at Liverpool since boss Jurgen Klopp took over last October, starting only eight league games. He joined the Reds for £32.5m in July 2015 under former boss Brendan Rodgers and has scored 10 goals. BOXING Wladimir Klitschko has revealed he is taking negotiations over his rematch with world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury to court. The 40-year-old Ukrainian (64-4-KO53) lost the WBA Super, WBO and IBF titles to Fury (25-0-KO18) in November last year and postponed talk of retirement by exercising a contractual rematch clause. The return was initially scheduled for Manchester on July 9, but was called off due to an ankle injury to the champion. A new date of October 29 was then pencilled in but with talks appearing to have broken down again, Klitschko released a statement via social media.

A FRIDAY FIRST Friday nights will see the Premier League get an early kick off, starting tonight as Man United play Southampton, writes JOHN MCGREGOR. Paul Pogba should make his home debut after Jose Mourinho’s side won at Bournemouth. Saints drew with Watford in their opener, with huge question marks over the unknown Claude Puel at the helm. More on the league on Page 46.

The 2016 Rio Olympics end on Sunday night, but there are still more medal nuggets to come from Team GB perspective, writes ALEX TRELINSKI. Staying up into Sunday morning is compulsory, as Mo Farah goes for his second Olympic middle distance double in the 5,000 metres final at 2.30 am. Earlier on, Tom Daley chases a second diving medal at Rio in the 10 metre platform event at 9.30 pm. Team GB have surpassed what was expected, especially in hitting gold so many times, and have become the most successful ever British Olympic team away from home shores. A big highlight was the gold medal haul in the velodrome from the “soon-to-be” husband and wife team of Jason Kenny and Laura Trott, who just might become a Knight and Dame as a nice wedding present!

LIGHTNING BOLT Usain Bolt's bid for the 'triple triple' is still on track after he cruised into the final of the Olympic Games 200m. The Jamaican sprint-great eased down over the last 50m of his semi-final but still managed to clock 19.78s in narrowly beating Canada's Andre de Grasse. BRAZIL REACH FINAL Neymar scored after only 14 seconds - the fastest goal in Olympic football history - as Brazil thrashed Honduras 6-0 to reach the men's final in Rio. The hosts will next face Germany, 7-1 winners against Brazil at the 2014 World Cup, as goals from Lukas Klostermann and

Nils Petersen gave the European side a 2-0 win over Nigeria. Neymar and Gabriel Jesus scored twice for Brazil in their convincing victory. Marquinhos and Luan also scored to take them into their fourth Olympic final. Brazil have never won gold in the men's football competition, los-
