HIT AND RUN!

BY ALEX TRELINSKI

A

60-year-old British man, Rob Sneddon, was mowed down by a UK-plated Land Rover Discovery vehicle on the N-332 at Guardamar on Sunday evening, with the driver and his passengers running away from the scene. A person that was with Mr. Sneddon at the time was unhurt. The Guardia Civil said that Mr. Sneddon lived in Guardamar and was hit at around 10.40 pm. Officers based in Torrevieja are in charge of trying to find the man behind the wheel of the Land Rover

F

and as the Courier went to press, no arrest had been made, though officers confirmed that the vehicle belonged to a UK-based company and had been brushed for fingerprints. Meanwhile, Mr.Sneddon’s daughter, Mandy, has made an impassioned appeal on Facebook for the driver to give himself up. The Guardia- run N-332 Facebook page has been used by officers to encourage people to come forward with any information and in a rare move they have publicised the number plate, SK13

MWM, to see if anybody remembers seeing the Land Rover in the area. There were some suggestions on the page that there had been sightings in the La Marina and El Raso urbanisations, with many contributors posting their disgust at the incident and offering support to the victim’s family. Mr. Sneddon’s daughter, Mandy, left an emotional message on the N-332 Facebook page: - “I am the daughter of the man who was left dead on the N-332 like an animal. I came on holiday for the summer so that my little girl Sophia could spend time with her grandfather. It was the worst news I have ever had to break to her. If anyone knows anything at all or can think of anything relevant please let the police know. Person or persons responsible, if you are reading this, please come forward. You will have this on your conscience for the rest of your life and my dad’s rearranged face will haunt me forever. My family want closure”. Trevor Evans, a close

friend of Mr. Sneddon said on Facebook:- “Please someone help me find the b-----d that ran over my best mate and killed him and left him in the road to die like a rabbit”. Mr. Sneddon was a former psychiatric nurse at the famous Priory Clinic rehab centre and he spent several years living in Eastbourne in Sussex before emigrating to Guardamar. As well as the “disappeared” driver, any other occupants in the hitand-run Land Rover are likely to face criminal charges under Spanish law for failing to provide assistance.

AP-7 HORROR

our Spaniards died and three suffered serious injuries on Wednesday lunchtime after a lorry careered over the central reservation of the AP-7 motorway close to the exit for Elche and Aspe. The southbound-travelling truck lost control after clipping a car which forced it over the barrier. It then smashed into two cars on the opposite carriage-

way and crushed one of them. An Elche court is to investigate whether the lorry driver should be charged with reckless homicide. Three people perished in the crushed car, as a fireball erupted with the driver of another car also killed. Two women as well as the lorry driver, who leapt out of his cab before the blaze broke out, were taken to hospital, with the driver passing a

breath test. The AP-7 was closed in both directions leading to major delays in order for

emergency services to deal with the tragedy which happened at around 1.15 pm.

A 58 year-old German man died on Monday morning whilst swimming at La Zenia beach on the Orihuela Costa. He had been on holiday with his family and an autopsy will be performed to find out the cause of death. The incident happened at around 9.30 am, half an hour before the

start of the lifeguard patrol shift. Meanwhile an 84-yearold bather was pulled out unconscious from the waters of Playa de El Cura in Torrevieja on Tuesday morning. Medics managed to revive the swimmer before he was transferred to Torrevieja Hospital.

A San Miguel de Salinas residents group has condemned the state of overflowing rubbish containers across the municipality. The San Miguel Arcángel' association says that public

health is being threatened by the trash piling up and have criticised the council for not doing enough to deal with something that gives visitors a poor impression of the area.

Hit And Run A cyclist was injured at the Los Alcázares Aquarium roundabout on Sunday after a car hit him and then sped away from the scene. Witnesses reported that the cyclist was thrown into the air and he was taken to Los

Arcos Hospital with head injuries and concussion. Meanwhile two people, including a child, suffered minor injuries when they were hit by a vehicle on Monday evening in front of the Hotel Costa Narejos on Calle Dobra.

A Kent-based amateur musician who had thousands of pounds worth of items stolen from his car in the Valencia region on his way down to the Southern Costa Blanca has claimed that he’s been treated badly by the Guardia Civil and that they had “shown total contempt” over his predicament. He did admit though that he could not speak Spanish. Alan Tidbury and his partner Linda stay a number of weeks every year in Los Montesinos and were travelling down from Sheerness in Kent in their Volvo estate car when they stopped for a break at a service area on the A-31 in the Valencia region on Saturday August 13th. Whilst they were at a restaurant, their car was broken into, despite the fact that there were two Staffordshire Bull terriers in the back of it. “The thieves smashed a side window and in spite of the dogs, they helped themselves to two suitcases; my mandolin and associated gear; my wife’s jewellery; in addition to bedding and food”, explained Mr. Tidbury. “The items were

worth around 35 thousand pounds”. “I was disgusted by my treatment”, he added. “ Despite their being a security camera, the Guardia Civil officers were not interested in checking it out and besides not being able to speak English, they didn’t even check whether any other vehicles in the parking area had been broken into”. Gangs of robbers, often of Eastern European or North African nationality, operate across the main tourist routes and service areas on highways like the AP-7 especially during the summer months, with the Guardia and the National Police having a good strike rate in bringing them to justice as reported in recent years by The Courier. Mr.Tidbury told The Courier that he was given a scrap piece of paper with basic details scrawled by the officers at the scene and told to file a formal report at his local Guardia barracks which are at San Miguel de Salinas. He had to pay for an interpreter to go with him to San Miguel and after much discussion,

was told to supply a list of stolen items printed out in Spanish, after giving the Spanish officers a written list in English. Despite Mr.Tidbury asking for them to make contact with their counterparts further north to check out any possible security footage, he claims that his pleas fell on deaf ears. “I found that the treatment we got was atrocious”, fumed Mr.Tidbury. “We were shown total contempt”. Mr. Tidbury is a regular contributor, when in the area, to the weekly music “jam” sessions at the Reflections restaurant, in the San Luis area of Torrevieja, with his stolen mandolin worth around 500 euros. Though partially insured, he says that the robbery and what he and his partner had to go through afterwards had left them unhappy and feeling that because they were not Spanish, being a victim of crime didn’t seem to be important to the authorities. The Courier has asked for a comment from the Guardia Civil which we hope to include in next week’s edition.

Bus Crash Three people were injured after a collision between a bus and a car in the El Campello area of Alicante on

Wednesday evening. The crash happened on the N332 at Venta Lanuza, with one person taken to Alicante

Bail Denied

Job Con The National Police in Alicante have arrested a businessman and five "workers", all aged in their forties, who made bogus unemployment benefit

claims. 65 thousand euros was defrauded from the state involving the creation of a fake company that happened not to employ anybody.

Driver Freed

A 37-year-old man was refused bail after appearing before a Torrevieja judge after the body of his wife, Johana Bertina Palma González, was found in a store room last week in their city centre apartment. The Chilean couple had lived in the area for some

15 years, and her friends reported her as missing over two months ago. The defendant, JCL, chose not to testify in Saturday's hearing with the couple's two children aged 12 and 5, being taken into care by social services. There was no reported his-

tory of domestic violence involving the couple, with the defendant telling the Guardia Civil that he struck his 32-year-old wife after a row in June and hid her body in a concrete wall in a water and electric meter room in their complex.

A female driver had to be freed from her car on Monday by firefighters after she lost control of her vehicle on the CV-91 in the Guardamar area. Two children aged one and a half and 14 that were travelling with her were unharmed, with their mother taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Knee Trembler An earth tremor measuring 2.4 on the Richter Scale with an epicentre south of Torrevieja struck last Monday morning at around 8.38 am. The mini quake was felt around Torrevieja, Benijófar, Quesada, San Fulgencio, Orihuela, San Miguel de Salinas, Algorfa, Benejúzar, Almoradi, Guardamar del Segura and Jacarilla.

Taxing Times Taxi drivers based at Alicante-Elche airport say that are set for a recordbreaking summer after several years of declining business at the facility. Record numbers of passengers have boosted trade but their association spokesman claims that they are still losing 40 percent of potential customers due to the use of pirate unlicensed taxis or legal operators coming in from other areas and going over their permitted quota.

Less Mozzies Experts say that there are fewer reports of the tiger mosquito in the Murcia region this summer due to a combination of

better prevention and spraying coupled with lower rainfall. Reports have halved compared to last year

(2015) but warnings have been issued that until October, the tiger mosquito is now in one of its key breeding times of the year.

Over a thousand fake items sold by illegal hawkers around Torrevieja’s beaches and boardwalks have been seized by the local police in just the first half of August. 1132 items were recovered

by the authorities in addition to one of the major ring-leaders of the unlicensed sellers being arrested. His detention followed the arrest and deportation of a Sengalese man back in May.

Pilar Plea

A campaign to reopen a 425-year-old watchtower in Torre de la Horadada went up a notch last weekend with the Pilar-based historical and cultural heritage group collecting signatures for a petition which calls for public

access to the 16th century structure on a weekly basis. The tower was used as a lookout point towards North Africa with the group having previous pleas to open up the structure rejected by Pilar council.

The death toll in the Italian earthquake has risen to at least 247 as of yesterday with thousands of rescuers continuing their efforts to find survivors. Dozens are believed trapped in ruined Amatrice, Accumoli and Pescara del Tronto, in mountainous central Italy. A top French court is being asked to overturn bans imposed by 26 towns on women wearing full-body swimsuits known as "burkinis" on the beach. A human rights group and an antiIslamophobia association argue the bans are in breach of French law. A Czech hiker who went missing a month ago has been found sheltering in a hut in the snowy mountains of southern New Zealand, telling police her husband had fallen to his death nearby. The woman was found by a search team near Lake Mackenzie. Colombians have celebrated an historic peace accord between the government and left-wing Farc rebels, signed after 52 years of conflict. The conflict has killed an estimated 220,000 people and displaced millions. An impoverished man in India carried his wife's body for 12km after the hospital where she died allegedly failed to provide an ambulance to carry the body back to their village. Dana Majhi's wife Amang, 42, died from tuberculosis with Dana saying his village was 60km away and he couldn't afford to hire a vehicle.

No Contest

A Santa Pola man tried to do a Usain Bolt in the Gran Alacant area last week and ran for the hills, chased by local police officers after they asked him for some ID papers during a routine check. He was easily caught and charged with public health offences after he was found with a bag of drugs.

Busy Rooms

Overnight hotel stays went up by just over seven percent in July compared to a year earlier across Spain as well as in the Valencia region including the Costa Blanca. The Valencia region showed an occupation rate of almost 78 percent last month, with British visitors accounting for over 27 percent of all international visitors, followed by Germany at almost 21 percent. Hotel occupancy in the Murcia region showed an impressive annual July rise of nearly 12 percent.

Something Smelling

Three British people who used a swimming pool to set a up a cannabis growing farm on a Murcia region

finca have been arrested by the Guardia Civil. The operation was set up in Bullas, halfway between Murcia

City and Caravaca with officers discovering over 300 marijuana plants at different stages of growth with the pool as a key centre of activity covered over by a plastic sheet to mistake the clandestine activities on the site. The arrested trio aged between 26 and 50 were all said by the Guardia to be local residents and planned to set up a cannabis club for the distrubution of the drug. Seeds, pesticides, and associated paraphernalia including lights and ventilators were seized in the Guardia raid.

Cheap Roman Job Segovia's iconic Roman aqueduct was badly built and is 'geologically unstable', according to the city's heritage and tourism councillor, but she’s assured everybody that it will not be collapsing in the future. Claudia Santos says that the municipality spends 14 thousand euros a year in maintenance and applies for every heritage grant going to carry out major structural restoration and repairs. The aqueduct, one of Spain's most famous attractions is one of the country’s most popular tourist magnets alongside the likes of

Granada’s Alhambra Palace. But it was literally built on shifting sands, Sra Santos reveals. It was made using largegrained granite, a type of stone said to be one of the

most unstable and of the worst quality around, meaning it was clearly not built to last any length of time. “Yet it's managed to stay standing for over two thousand years,” said the councillor.

Monkey Business

A British primate rescue organisation, Monkey World, has provided three Bornean orangutans for Rio Safari Elche which arrived just in time at the park for last Friday's World Orangutan

Day. The primate is classified as an endangered species with Rio Safari involved in a special European conservation programme to study the orangutan.

Eastern Connection

The Guardia Civil have broken up an AlbanianBulgarian network smuggling heroin and other drugs from the Balkans and Turkey to the cities of Barcelona and Tarragona, arresting seven members of the group. Officers discovered a “sophisticated laboratory” for heroin processing in a village near Barcelona and seized 38 kilograms of high-purity heroin, eight kilograms of cocaine, 50 kilograms of processing chemicals, and a silenced handgun. The Guardia said that the gang

members had “military training and great discipline”. The gang came to the attention of Spanish authorities, who worked in conjunction with Albanian police, after they seized documents in an earlier raid. The group, led by an Albanian with an “extensive criminal history,” was then placed under surveillance. Police said the Albanian members of the group handled the smuggling operations, while a Bulgarian member arranged for distribution of the drugs.

Zika Man A 61-year-old Alicante man has contracted the zika virus, according to the Ministry of Health, after he visited Columbia last month

Part of a ship's anchor thought to date from Roman times nearly two thousand years ago has been found by a diver at Cabo de Palos on the Mar Menor. He reported his sighting with Guardia Civil divers retrieving the anchor, which was 50 cms long and containing elements of lead and silver. The Guardia have handed the artefact over to the Murcia archaeological museum.

and returned back on August 15th, reporting symptoms of the virus. Officials said that he did not need to go to hospital and is progressing well.

Benidorm Break

One of the most-wanted members of the Italian mafia has been arrested whilst on a family holiday in Benidorm. Salvatore Mariano, 40, who is part of

the Camorra mafia based in Naples, was staying in an up-market seafront hotel costing hundreds of euros a night, before the Guardia Civil took him

away last Friday. He featured in Italy's top 100 most-dangerous fugitives and is accused of organised crime and drug-trafficking. Mariano managed to escape a police swoop in March in which 33 members of the Contini clan, which he belongs to, were arrested and 20 million euros worth of goods seized. He has been on the missing list ever since. Mariano was tracked down thanks to close cooperation between the Guardia and their Italian counterparts, the Carabinieri. Guardia officers entered the hotel and gained access to the accused's suite by disguising themselves as room service staff, and had verbal profanity and screams directed at them by Mariano’s family as they brought his Benidorm break to an early end.

Deal Done

The acting government of the right-wing Partido Popular under Mariano Rajoy formally signed a deal at the end of last week with the centrist Ciudadanos party and their leader Albert Rivera that could allow the formation of a new government and stop a third general election in a

year. The parties signed a package of conditions set by Ciudadanos on Friday, a day after Parliament announced that the PP leader and acting prime minister Mariano Rajoy will put his candidacy to form a new government to a first vote this coming Wednesday.

Ciudadnos have demanded electoral reform and a major push against corruption as well as a two-term limit on anybody being prime minister. If the situation remains deadlocked two months after that vote, Spain would have to hold fresh elections in December. So far, Rajoy's effort to muster enough votes from other parties to end eight months of political deadlock following two inconclusive elections have been unsuccessful, as most other parties including the socialist PSOE and left-wing Podemos have pledged to vote him down. Despite the deal with Ciudadnos, Rajoy is still short of getting a majority.

Burkhini Ban Public swimming pools in the province of Lleida in the Catalunya region have banned the 'burkhini', following France's example where several towns have prohibited the Islamic women's bathing costumes. In Lleida city, one of the

first in Spain to ban the burkha from public places, 'burkhinis' have been barred from local outdoor and indoor pools on the grounds of 'hygiene and safety'. “We don't allow swimming or bathing in clothes

anyway, and signs are already up at every pool reminding users that it is forbidden to enter the water in T-shirts, trousers and so on,” the city council says.“Use of proper swimming costumes or bikinis are required”.

Brit In Swim Death A British man who ignored red flags died at a Costa del Sol beach on Sunday whilst swimming with his 10-yearold daughter. Around a dozen bathers leapt into the water to save the child after spotting them being dragged towards rocks by the strong current. Lifeguards reached her father moments later, who witnesses said at first appeared okay after being brought to safety before he collapsed and fell to the ground from a suspected heart attack. The tragedy happened just before 2.30pm on Sunday in front of the dead man's wife and other daughter aged five

at El Penoncillo Beach in Torrox on the Costa del Sol. The dead man was identified

only by his initials - R.B.M – and is understood to be from London.

Russian Fury A man has been arrested in Benidorm after locking his partner in his car. The Russian woman had a mobile phone and called police to tell them that she could not get out of the vehicle which was parked on Calle Tomás Ortuño. Firefighters arrived to free her whilst the local police detained her partner after she not too surprisingly made a complaint against him.

Beware Of Scam Alert

Torrevieja council is warning people to be wary of people going around the area and collecting on behalf of local charities and associations that don’t even exist. The Guardia Civil has already detained some Romanians who were “collecting” for a disabled charity, whilst the council has received alerts over bogus collections along the coast for the lifeguard service and people trying to con local businesses into advertising in a non-existent magazine for an alleged Torrevieja sporting event.

Gabriel’s Rescue

Two British children were rescued by an off-duty National Police officer after nearly drowning at a beach on Mallorca which had warning red flags flying on it. The boy, aged seven, and his 10-yearold sister cried for help and waved their arms in the air, as

the officer dived in to save them. The incident happened at Son Serra de Marina, with a National Police spokesman saying that the youngsters would have almost certainly drowned if it had not been for the prompt action of the officer, Gabriel M.V.

Strange Parenting

A baby was rescued from a parked car in Sant Joan d'Alacant after his father went shopping and left him in the vehicle last week. The baby's father, a 33-year-old German tourist, along with his three-year-old son had gone into a supermarket on the N-332, leaving the infant, aged just nine months, in a carry-cot, as temperatures rose. Several passers-by, con-

cerned for the baby's welfare, flagged down a Guardia Civil car patrolling the area. Officers smashed the back-seat window to get to the baby, who was unconscious. They gave him water and attempted to get him to respond to stimulus, which he did, just before the ambulance arrived. The baby's father was said to have 'reacted calmly'

when he saw the police surrounding his car – but refused to allow paramedics to take the child to hospital. Instead, they had to attend to him at the roadside, with the child in good health. The Guardia said the father was arrested, but then was released after giving a statement. The family – husband, wife and three children – were staying at a local park in the area.

Stability Please Four thousand square metres of scrubland was torched in the Callosa de Segura area last Friday after a copper wire thief helped himself to the material used in the construction of the high-speed AVE train service line to Murcia City. The fire broke out in La Monsina with the police believing that the pilferer

would have started the blaze as sparks from the copper on a hot and dry would have created the fire when getting into contact with vegetation underneath the bridge. The blaze spread to the ADIF viaduct close to the cemetary with three fire crews used to bring the fire under control with road (on the CV-900) and rail traffic unaffected. Spanish banks have reported uncertainty in the wake of the UK's vote to leave the European Union along with concerns about what will happen after exit negotiations between Britain and the other 27 EU nations are concluded. Banca March says: “This new scenario undoubtedly affects our vision of investment risk levels, and we would recommend a more cautious approach in the

medium term.” Banco Santander says its shares have lost 10% since the results of the referendum were made known. But their situation is not as drastic as that of Morgan Stanley, which estimates its average profits across its branches will shrink by a typical 18% by the end of 2018. Machinery, transport equipment, chemicals, fuel, insurance companies and the financial and banking sector

in general will be the industries most likely to suffer, says Deutsche Asset Management. Bankinter, which is Dutch but heavily present on the Spanish high street, expects the next few months to see ongoing market volatility, especially as many UK fund managers have locked in investments in property in response to the flood of requests for reimbursement. “It seems improbable that the scenario post-Brexit will be better than the one before it, and valuations will gradually be reduced – the only convincing factor for those looking to invest in the UK could be a more attractive market based upon lower prices – but the downside is that the stock markets will probably be blocked for some time,” Bankinter's third-quarter strategy report reads.

Sticky Spot A female paraglider got stuck on the cliff face just below the Santa Pola lighthouse on Monday and had

to wait two hours to be rescued. The rocky terrain made things difficult for the fire

rescue team who eventually managed to get a line down to her as she sustained a minor ankle injury.

Deathly Pile Up A lorry driver has been arrested for causing a pile up involving 22 vehicles which saw two people killed and left a further 32 injured last Thursday evening south of Madrid. The Guardia Civil said the driver of one of three articulated lorries involved in the accident has been arrested on seven charges, two of dangerous driving and five of causing injury. The accident happened in dry, clear weather when his lorry crashed into several vehicles parked at the side of the A-4 highway south of Madrid, close to the town of Manzanares, as the result of an earlier incident in which a car has gone off the road.

It is thought the lorry driver had either suffered a loss of concentration or had not been driving to the rules of the road, and that is what caused him to plough into the stationary vehicles. Five of the injured were described as in a serious

condition, while the other 27 only suffered minor injuries. Meanwhile the road was blocked in the Madrid-bound direction travelling for four and a half hours as rescue services cleared away the debris, causing major traffic delays.

A Complete And Utter World Of Despair!!! Increasingly I feel like giving up on the human race. Just when you feel it can't get any worse - it does! How can the world watch and do nothing while Russia and the Syrian regime carry out indiscrimate bombing inflicting death, injury and misery to thousands of innocent civilians including countless children as happening in Aleppo, Syria? How can a

child in Turkey become a suicide bomber, mingle among wedding guests and blow himself up, killing more than 50 and injuring 80 people, many of them young children? How can the United Nations finally accept they were responsible for killing thousands of people by importing a disease into Haiti following a devasting hurricane and still be

allowed to hide behind diplomatic immunity from prosecution or civil liability and not being required to contribute to families affected in one of the poorest countries in the world? How can the world sit by and see Brazil "steal" cash for the Olympics by robbing the Para-Olympics of the money needed to run that competition successfully - insulting every disabled

person in the process? How can Britain not have introduced meaningful legislation years ago to control dangerous dogs - and we see in just a week two people die, including a young child through horrendous attacks by these animals? How can Britain run hugely expensive mental hospitals to house the criminal mentally insane for the rest of

Animal charities and animal lovers have done a wonderful job convincing the public that there is no such thing as a dangerous dog - just dangerous owners who do not train and control their pets properly. Try telling that to the thousands of postmen and other callers who have been and still are being bitten, and

try telling that to the relatives and friends of the two people in the UK killed by dogs last week. I would be the first to agree that there are far too many irresponsible people in the UK and elsewhere who have dogs and don't know, or care, how to control them properly, allowing them to attack other dogs, or people.

A UN Failure The United Nations is there to provide an international force to help in time of emergency - and troops poured into Haiti to deal with a natural disaster there in 2010. Sadly some of the UN troops deployed came from Nepal and brought with them cholera which has gone on to kill 10,000 people in Haiti, which was previously cholera-free for more than 100 years. The UN says it is protect-

ed by diplomatic immunity from claims for compensation from victims' families, which is totally morally wrong. The UN knows only too well that Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world and should have done far, far more to help once the disease was discovered. Instead it seems it hid behind legalities to avoid moral responsibilities. All this needs to be put right and fast.

ever increasing obesity and instead just relying on the food industry acting voluntarily, knowing they will only do half-heartedly? These are just some of the stories which have highlighted humanity's craziness, man's inhumanity to man and simple crass stupidity in just one week. A sad and sorry tale, which I’m looking into this week.

Brazilian Betrayl

Deal With The Dogs At the worst there are the totally irresponsible who have big dogs as symbols and those who use them to fight other dogs for money. But dogs are carnivours, with an instinct to kill and it just takes some small thing to turn an otherwise quiet dog into a killer. It may be the postman or a caller invading the dog's territory, or, as last week, a three-year-old child straying into a neighbour's garden, causing it to think it has to protect its owners. It may be that the dog is ill - just like when human becomes ill and acts irrationally. But we cannot keep on listening to the likes of charities, misplaced animal lovers, or the pet breeding industry looking

their lives - those who have committed horrendous crimes costing a fortune, diverting money from a cash-strapped NHS money better spent on saving people needing operations? How can the UK government be so weak as to yet again appease big business by not cracking down on the advertising and sale of fatty foods and drinks leading to

after its huge money-making activities, trying to convince us that every dog attack is the result of a bad owner. Perhaps the answer is to ban the ownership of dogs over a certain size in urban areas, or to give licences to people allowing them to own a dog only after they undergo a proper dog training regime. The government is under increasing pressure to act decisively, and not just ban one or two breeds, allowing breeders to modify the species slightly to get around legislation. The argument should be - is your dog a potential killer? If so, then it must be treated in the same way as a knife or a gun in a public place.

Britain did a wonderful job back in 2012 to put the Paralympic Games on the map allowing the top disabled athletes to perform on a well-funded and well-publicised international stage. Many thousands of the public came to watch and the hope was that Britain's lead would be continued and these disabled Olympics would be given the respect and standing it deserved. Sadly, in the hands of Brazil, this has gone sadly wrong. Not only have the Brazilians let the disabled down by not buying tickets for the event, with just a fortnight to go just 12 percentof the available tickets were sold, it was revealed that Brazil stripped cash from the Paralympic Games to fund the high profile Olympics.

Not only is this an insult to the disabled and disabled athletes in particular, it shows how important it is for the International Olympic Committee to properly vet countries wanting to host the events to ensure they have the commitment and the financial clout to do so. If countries continue to fail in this way perhaps the Olympics should return to its birthplace in Greece and the rest of the world properly funds it there. I couldn't end this subject without massive congratulations to team GB who had their best ever Olympic Games. It just shows what can happen with the right funding, training, facilities and dedication. Britain has shown how to lead the way in Europe - now let's do it again post-Brexit.

Owners Tax Cut Property tax (IBI) is to be cut by Pilar de la Horadada council by up to six percent for local home owners. Finance councillor José Tomás Saura claims that it means an annual saving of over 30 euros for anybody that paid 550 euros of IBI last year.

Driver Pulled Up A 42-year-old drunk driver was pulled over by the local police on Calle Hermanos Parra in Callosa on Saturday. A breath test showed him to be four times over the legal alcohol limit, and officers discovered that a court had earlier stripped him of his driving license.

One For The Road

A 56-year-old drunk driver from Spain's Basque country region gave French authorities plenty to think about after he was pulled over for travelling some 240 kilometres at almost 10 times over the legal alcohol limit. He was breathalysed by the Gendarmerie on the A89 motorway linking Bourgogne and Perigueux, when they saw him parked on the hard shoulder in the town of Saint-Seurin-surl'Isle. Officers said he stank of alcohol and was too drunk even to complete the breathalyser test, so they took him to the nearest hospital. A blood test was carried out, and the reading showed 4.75

much alcohol he had drunk beforehand. He has provisionally been banned from driving for six months, but will appear in court in Libourne in southern France in October.

In a scene out of the blockbuster movie Jaws, bathers rushed out of the water at Santa Pola’s Playa del Varadero on Tuesday afternoon when a shark fin

Torrevieja local police used the headlights of their patrol vehicle to pick out a jetski out on an evening spin that was drifting out to sea between La Mata and Cabo Cervera. The incident

happened last week on Wednesday at around 9.00 pm after the lifeguards had gone off-duty, with one of the officers getting into the water to help the three people who had got into

difficulty including a sevenyear-old boy, whilst his colleague manoeuvred the patrol car to get the best possible lighting for the area. The officer, who had received first-aid training, rescued the boy, and then returned to the becalmed jetski to assist the other two people including a 21-yearold man who was suffering from exhaustion after attempting to reach land under his own steam.

Torre Flats Fire Exit A block of Torrevieja flats was evacuated on Tuesday evening after a blaze broke out in the complex on Calle Santander in the Acequión. Fire crews from Torrevieja and Almoradi were called in with the fire starting in the bedroom of one of the apartments. Nobody was injured with many of the occupants being tourists visiting the area, with the cause of the blaze still under investigation.

A Vueling flight from Ibiza to Madrid was delayed by half an hour when a National Police officer’s handgun accidentally went off on Saturday. The officer had been trying to secure the gun, stored in a suitcase, before take-off. The bullet was contained

inside the case, but the smell of gunpowder spread around the cabin on the Vueling plane. The shot sparked panic among passengers but nobody was injured with the officer following protocol by handing the weapon to the pilot.

In The Act

Au Pair Rape

A British au pair aged in her early twenties has told police that she was raped at a northern Spanish beach on Sunday. She told authorities that she was sexually assaulted by a man at a car park at Arriatera Beach outside Bilbao before he

abandoned her there. A passer-by stopped to help her and called the police after discovering her walking around very disorientated. She told officers she had been raped after being taken to hospital.

Prying Eyes

A man offering free tourist accommodation in Alicante City which was advertised via the internet used his apparent generous deed to act as a “Peeping Tom” on his guests. The National Police collared the snooping 41-year-old Spanish landlord who installed spy cameras in

a bedroom and in a bathroom to record dozens of hours of footage. A couple staying in the house suspected that something was amiss and reported him to the authorities, who discovered that at least ten people had been filmed illegally.

Unwanted First Torrevieja is officially the home robbery capital of Spain according to figures for the first half of 2016 produced by the Interior Ministry but in a statistical quirk, the high figure is actually down by four point six percent on the same period in 2015. Statistics show that Torrevieja has a robbery rate of 58.56 incidents per 10 thousand people with 518 home crimes logged between January and June 2016. Last year there were 543 crimes were reported over the first half of 2015. Torrevieja’s figures are

almost double that of the second place municipality which is Sant Cugat del Valles in Barcelona. Orihuela is placed fifth on the home robbery list with 246 recorded offences. Overall, there have so far been 3,407 crimes and

offences in Torrevieja during the first six months of 2016, an overall rise of three point one percent, whilst Orihuela has had 1,798 recorded crimes, which is a nought point six percent fall on the same period last year.

Mistaken Hit

A father-of-three gunned down in a mistaken identity killing on Mallorca last week only met the intended target when their children played in the pool together. Trevor O’Neill was shot dead in front of his wife and child outside

an empty supermarket on the island. Jonathon Hutch - older brother of Irish feud murder victim Gareth Hutch - told the Guardia Civil that he believes he was the real target of the hit-man. The 37-year-old,

A Romanian man, who forced his ex-partner into prostitution as a condition of seeing her daughter, has been arrested by the National Police. The 35year-old man, who has a police record for similar activities, abused the 17year-old woman by using her as a street prostitute as well placing her into sex clubs in Alicante and Huelva.

Battle Continues Dolores council has been spraying and fumigating local drains as part of their on-going campaign to reduce pests and cockroaches in the municipality. More Protection

Unruly Waves

Two shuttle boat drivers operating between Santa Pola and Tabarca Island face fines of up to a thousand euros each after the Guardia Civil discovered that they were taking to the sea having taken drugs. The two men would ferry passengers to and from Tabarca on a speedboat and a catamaran, with the company operating the services calling in the Guardia after complaints from travellers about the "rough" journeys they had suffered.

Castle Kept 33 thousand euros is to be spent sprucing up the woodland around Guardamar Castle, thanks to a grant from the Alicante Provincial Council. New trees and shrubs are to be planted as well as a general clean up of dead shrubs and vegetation.

Pervs Stopped

A Civil Protection team targetting Torrevieja's beaches has been launched by the local council with the authority saying that they will use the remaining weeks of the summer season to look at how it will work and to

tweak any issues ready for next year's highs season. The volunteers were help with various sports events as well as helping with environmental matters like pollution and stranded marine life.

Two Spanish drug-dealers have been arrested in Torrevieja after selling drugs from two local addresses, with the products then being distributed across Alicante Province. A 43-year-old man and a 25-year old woman were detained by the National Police with cocaine and heroin being seized in addition to associated drugs paraphernalia.

Catral’s Quick Reply

Catral’s Semana Santa celebrations have been declared an event of “Local Tourist Interest”, just weeks after the local council unanimously voted to push for the designation. The authority passed a resolution in May, with the approval being made in record time by the Valencia Regional Tourist Board. Tourism councillor Francisco Grao said the recognition was well deserved for everybody who works hard through the year to make the week a special event.

A small publisher in the northern city of Burgos has acquired the rights to publish one of the world’s most mysterious books, a centuriesold manuscript written in an unknown or coded language that no one has cracked. Scholars have spent their lives puzzling over the Voynich manuscript, whose intriguing mix of elegant writing and drawings of strange plants and naked women has some believing it holds magical powers. The book is locked away in a vault at Yale University’s Beinecke library, emerging only occasionally. But after a 10-year appeal for access, Siloe, a small publishing house in northern Spain has secured the right to clone the document – to the delight of its director.

“Touching the Voynich is an experience,” says Juan Jose Garcia. “It’s a book that has such an aura of mystery that when you see it for the first time ... it fills you with an emotion that is very hard to describe.” Siloe, which specialises in making facsimiles of old manuscripts, has bought the rights to make 898 exact replicas of the Voynich – so faithful that tear in the parchment will be reproduced. The company always publishes 898 replicas of each work it clones – a number which is a palindrome – after the success of its first facsimile of which they made 696 copies. The publishing house plans to sell the facsimiles for up to eight thousand euros, and almost 300 people have already put in pre-orders.

The Guardia Civil have arrested two British men after dismantling a drugs laboratory. Officers seized 8,700 LSD tablets and 10 kilos of amphetamines as well as 17,000 calming benzodiazepines known as 'benzos' which are traditionally used to treat insomnia and have been linked to a string of rave deaths. The arrests and seizure were made on an industrial estate in Leioa in the north-

ern Basque province of Bizkaia in a Guardia operation called Operation Postal Kit. Officers say the designer drugs were sent by post from the clandestine lab to Europe, Australia and New Zealand, and the States. A Guardia spokesman said: - 'Two British nationals who were trafficking new psychoactive substances have been arrested. After the interception of

several envelopes left in a post box close to the industrial estate, it was confirmed they contained psychoactive substances.’ 'The warehouse was raided and thousands of drugs seized along with other material including invoices, weighing scales, masks and other equipment needed for the handling of the illegal substances,' added the spokesman.

Towing Away A firm that was in charge of Torrevieja’s municipal towing service up till 2008, says they are still owed four million euros. The José Lozano company has so far

been paid two and a half million euros including interest payments as a result of taking legal action, with interest and costs awarded in its favour.

Torrevieja’s finance councillor José Hurtado has blamed the previous Partido Popular-run council for not paying the bills when they should have.

Lily’s Rare Death

A seriously ill horse that died in Alicante this month after suffering a baffling series of injuries and illnesses could have been suffering a rare disease never before seen in Spain. An autopsy has revealed the two-year-old mare named Lily, who was cared for by the Rojalesbased Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, had hard mineral lumps like stones in her neck, heart and lungs – a sign of systemic calcinosis and calciphylaxis. It is believed that only five cases of the illness have ever been recorded in America. Veterinarians at the Hospital Veterinario San Vicente, who treated Lily, have preserved the stones in

formaldehyde to be sent to the University of Córdoba when it reopens in September for further specialist analysis. "We are obviously devastated to lose this beautiful young member of our rescue centre family, particularly after the loss of her mother only two years ago,” said Easy Horse Care co-founder Sue Weeding. “But we hope that Lily's death will help to bridge some of the knowledge gaps in equine medicine, and learnings from Lily will one day help other horses."

When To Use A Harness The recent trend and preference for many dog owners has been the harness as opposed to a collar, but perhaps the big question that should be asked is "Which is better for My Dog?" Just like people, dogs come in different shapes and sizes with varying needs and personalities. What works best for one dog may not be ideal for another. Choosing a collar or harness for your dog depends on three things:-

3. Any medical conditions that imapce on your dog Collars are certainly the most traditional approach when it comes to walking and training your dogs. If your dog does not pull on a leash and has no trachea or respiratory issues, then a collar is a good option for everyday. Large or small, it really doesn't matter. The only time a traditional collar is not recommended is for dogs that pull, lunge, or are

1. Your training and your wanted behavioural goals 2. The size and confirmation of your dog or dogs

at risk for tracheal collapse. Harnesses are a popular choice for many dog owners today. This is partly due to

misunderstandings with using collars and partly because of increased knowledge and awareness in regards to the impact that pulling and breathing complications can have on your dog So, when to use... Dogs that pull and lunge excessively, are the best candidates for harnesses. When dogs constantly pull ahead during walks or lunge suddenly, this can put strain on the neck and throat with potentially harmful affects over time. Aside from pulling on the leash, toy breeds and dogs with short muzzles are also good candidates for harnesses. Toy breeds, such as toy poodles or chihuahuas, are delicate and a collar can be damaging to their neck. Breeds with short muzzles, such a pugs, also benefit from harnesses because of their possible predisposition to breathing complications and tracheal collapse. So, if your dog meets one or more of the above, then a harness is a preferred option. Now that you know you need a harness, you will need to decide what type is best for your dog. Harnesses come in two common styles: Front-Attaching Harness and Back-Attaching Harness. For larger dogs, many train-

ers suggest a FrontAttaching Harness. This type of harness attaches in the front of the dog between the legs and can offer more control as it gently tightens when the dog pulls and guides from the front. Harnesses that clasp in the back will leave you with little or no control for a larger dog and may even make the pulling behaviour worse as the dog will not feel the guidance necessary to correct pulling behaviour. For many toy breeds, a Back-Attaching Harness is preferred. It does not create the same pressure and tightening affect in the chest as the front-attaching harness would for a large breed dog. Plus, toy breeds are smaller and more sensitive to pressure, making the frontattaching harness potentially more damaging and much more painful than effective. Lastly, if a collar or harness are not giving you the optimal blend of restraint and behavioural correction, then a hybrid option is the head halter. A head halter looks like a fabric muzzle, but is not. The head halter has a piece of fabric that runs around the back of the head and another strap that goes around the muzzle.

TRELI ON THE TELLY A Question Of Format

WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

as a host. Since it limped off the screens in some nondescript celebrity specials, ITV have been chasing around for something to get a bit of a buzz, and have gone to the States to bring us 500 Questions which premiered on Monday. 500 Questions has been co-created by Mark Burnett, the man behind The Apprentice, and is stripped by the US ABC network as a “one-week only” nightly special over the summer , and ITV clearly wants this to have a Millionaire-style effect, but sorry no way, and with just two million viewers on Monday, before hitting Holby

and Bake Off this week, it’s a massive ratings flop (Ripper Street got nearly three million viewers on BBC 2). I was genuinely surprised that nobody wanted to try 500 Questions in the first place as it was not a boring hour and in journalist Giles Coren (brother of Victoria CorenMitchell, and his late-dad being the witty ex-Punch editor and Call My Bluff captain, Alan Coren), they have a very good host who can think on his feet and have something interesting to say. That’s a big plus, but the format is too complicated besides being a damn tough thing to win as essentially it

What makes a great TV quiz show? It’s rather simple really as I go for two things, namely a good format and an excellent host. ITV have never really had a mass primetime quiz hit since the days of Millionaire fronted by Chris Tarrant. That ticked all the boxes and became the talk of the nation and got everybody talking, or in the case of the infamous cheat, coughing! The format was great and Tarrant’s pokerfaced handling was a perfect match for something that became an international hit, and having seen it in a few countries, take it from me that nobody matched Tarrant

is about making sure that you don’t get three questions wrong in a row and therefore losing the chance to be in there at the end to get all the money . As a quiz nut, the sheer speed needed to answer the questions correctly would put The Chasers from The Chase in trouble, and I think 500 Questions has some other problems about it. Firstly, unless I’m proved wrong, there is no way that you can get a win unless you appear in the second half of the programme. Secondly, I just don’t get that kind of a thrill when somebody actually does get the dosh compared to the way somebody did it on Millionaire. You were talking serious bucks there on a “do or die” question as Chris Tarrant stared at you, whilst it’s cheap-skate five figure sum territory here for something that is far harder than Millionaire. The following morning “water cooler” moment just isn’t there as it was for Millionaire, and I get far more excitement from seeing the team take on The Chasers in The Chase. Also there is an unfairness that a new “challenger” might appear with just five minutes

to go on 500 Questions and doesn’t get a chance to continue that challenge in the next edition. If ITV has some latitude in the format (and presumably these episodes were recorded weeks ago), then if it does bring 500 Questions back (perhaps as a 5.00 pm show when The Chase takes a break), it ought to be allowed to make some improvements, and actually make it a wee bit more straight forward. Don’t expect to see it back in primetime though and I just suspect that ITV have been playing out the episodes to clear them out before the bullet dramas Victoria and Cold Feet hit the screen. As an aside, my eyes

popped out watching the end credits of 500 Questions when I saw that the show made by Wall to Wall productions (makers of The Voice and Long Lost Family but owned by ITV) was recorded in studios in Cologne in Germany on the actual set of the German equivalent which is screened there by RTL Television. Talk about cost saving but what a slap in the face for UK studios and technicians who are frankly world leaders. No wonder the humourless German audience seemed mute at times with a laughter and applause track added in post-production. Come on ITV, London or Salford not good enough for you?

Are You Being Served?

Sunday 28 August 9.00pm-9.30pm BBC ONE One of Britain's bestloved sitcoms returns to BBC One for a one-off special as part of the BBC landmark sitcom season. The iconic sitcom, which was last on our screens more than 30 years ago, is back with a new all-star cast. Are You Being Served? follows the misadventures of the staff of a retail floor of a fictional London department store called Grace Brothers. Picking up where Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft's classic comedy left off, the show will bring Grace Brothers and some of the nation's all-time favourite sitcom characters,

including Mrs Slocombe, Captain Peacock and Mr Humphries, back to life with an all-star cast. It's 1988 and Young Mr Grace is determined to drag Grace Brothers into, well 1988, but he has a problem on his hands. Mr Humphries, Captain Peacock, Mr Rumbold and Mrs Slocombe all seem to be stuck in another era. A new member of staff, Mr Conway, joins the team but will he help shake things up or will he just put a pussy among the pigeons? This brand new one-off special is written by the multi-award winning Derren Litten (Benidorm, The Catherine Tate Show).

The Truth Commissioner Ep 1/1 Saturday 27 August 9.30pm-11.00pm BBC TWO Adapted from the awardwinning 2008 novel by David Park, The Truth Commissioner is a powerful political thriller produced in association with Northern Ireland Screen, BBC Northern Ireland, The Irish Film Board and The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland. The drama stars Roger Allam (The Queen, Endeavour, Tamara Drewe, The Book Thief, The Thick Of It); Sean McGinley (Michael Collins, from Braveheart, The Wind That Shakes The Barley); Tom Goodman Hill (The Imitation Game, Mr Selfridge); Conleth Hill (Intermission, Salmon Fishing In Yemen, New Amsterdam, Game Of Thrones); Ian McElhinney (Game Of Thrones); Bird Brennan (Shadow Dancer) and Barry Ward (Jimmy’s Hall). Set in a post-Troubles Northern Ireland, The Truth Commissioner follows the fictional story of Henry Stanfield, played by Roger Allam, a career diplomat who has just been appointed as Truth Commissioner to Northern Ireland. Eager to

make good as a peacemaker, the Prime Minster urges a commission following the South African model of Truth and Reconciliation. But, though Stanfield starts bravely, he quickly uncovers some bloody and inconvenient truths - truths which none of those in power are prepared to have revealed. The story revolves around the lives of three men who are directly or indirectly involved in the murder, 20 years earlier, of the 15 yearold Connor Roche. Stanfield calls the three men to testify: Francis Gilroy, played by Sean McGinley, a government minister and former IRA member; retired policeman James Fenton, played by Ian McElhinney, who recruited Connor as an informer; and Michael Madden, played by Barry Ward, who has been brought back to Belfast to “admit” to Roche’s murder. In a society trying to heal the scars of the old, a secret past conspires to destroy the present. For the truth is often less about what might be gained rather than what might be lost. The Truth Commissioner is a fictional and dramatic tale of how the truth is sometimes never pure nor simple.

As the rest of the team learns more about Damon and more suspects come under the spotlight they begin to wonder if the infallible Banks has got it wrong.

The peak of the burrito Put something in a burrito and it acquires a cool edge, we taste test the latest hipster food fad

In San Francisco, the birthplace of the “Missionstyle” burrito – the meaty, rice-filled, bean-and-cheese experience that most will recognize – a growing number of cooks are experimenting with the burrito blueprint.

The basics remain the same: a carpeting of carbs (usually rice), meat or fish, and something fresh (avocado, salads or vegetables) twisted up in a tortilla, bread or other wrap. But the results vary wildly.

So if the burrito – not the burger – is now America’s favorite food playground, who’s getting it right and who’s getting it wrong? The sushi-rrito A sushirrito is exactly what it sounds like: a giant piece of sushi rolled like a burrito. But this is more than a copycat, it’s something new and delicious that combines atypical ingredients (think ginger-spiked avocado, lotus chips or sweetcorn) into a dish that’s heartier than sushi but lighter than the Mexican-American classic. It’s delicious. Of all the faux burritos I tried the sushi burrito is the farthest departure, but it works by reminding us of everything these two great dishes have in common. The new meat-ritto Meat is the burrito’s headline act, and some of the best fusion burritos use the format to showcase a signature meat dishes. Roy Choi’s Kogi food truck in Los Angeles is a well-loved example, stuffing caramelized Korean barbecue inside tacos and burritos. Sweet and smoky jerk chicken also feels at home inside a tortilla. I tried one

stuffed with rice, beans, plantains and a tomato cucumber relish. A sour and savory Filipino specialty called “sisig”, made from marinated and charbroiled pork, also works well as a burrito heavyweight. Señior Sisig in California is leading the charge here, and even swaps out rice for french fries. Crunchy, greasy, fabu-

lous. The Korrito The “korrito” (from a food truck called Seoul on Wheels), featuring bulgogi (grilled, marinated beef), cilantro, sour cream, sriracha and cheddar cheese, is a good example of rice-minded thinking. Their rice laced with kimchee was so good it actually made me excited to eat the

rice side of my burrito. San Francisco’s mega-hip Mission Chinese does a “kung pao” burrito, which comes with kung pao pastrami, home fries, cheese, scallions and salt cod fried rice. While their pastrami teeters dangerously on the edge of over-salted, the rice has deliciously fishy undertones and a pleasant pop of peanuts.

I think it is worth peeling the tomatoes, but it is up to you. Tinned plum tomatoes also work. Serves 4 1.5 kg chicken, jointed into 8, or 8 thighs 60g pancetta or bacon Extra virgin olive oil 1 garlic clove A sprig of rosemary, finely chopped (optional) Salt and black pepper 150ml dry white wine 800g ripe, fleshy tomatoes, peeled and chopped 4 large or 6 small red or yellow peppers

1 Joint the chicken, making sure the pieces are at room temperature and dry. Cut the pancetta into short batons. In a large deep frying pan or heavy casserole, warm 2 tbsp olive oil, then fry the pancetta until the fat has rendered. Working in batches, if necessary, add the chicken pieces skinside down and cook until a light golden crust has formed – about 8 minutes – then turn and brown the other side. 2 Assess how much fat is in your pan, adding more

olive oil or pouring fat away. Peel and gently crush the clove of garlic and add to the pan along with the chopped rosemary, if using. Season with salt and pepper. 3 Add the wine and let it bubble away for a minute or two, then add the tomatoes. Cover the pan for 10 minutes, lifting the lid to stir halfway through. Then halfcover and cook over a medium-low heat for 45-60 minutes or until the tomatoes have reduced to a rich sauce and the chicken is tender. If the sauce looks dry, add a little water. 4 Meanwhile, prepare the peppers by roasting them whole at 200C/400F/gas mark 6 until they are charred and floppy. Tip them into a bowl and cover with clingfilm for 10 minutes, by which time the skin should pull away. Discard the skins and pips, then rip the pepper into thick strips. 5 In the last 10 minutes of cooking time, add the peppers to the pan so the flavours can mingle. Allow the dish to sit for at least an hour – overnight even. Eat at room temperature or reheat gently for 5 mins and then serve.

Korean Lettuce Beef Wraps with Kimchi Slaw

Kimchi Arancini Balls with Aioli

Barbecue beef wraps make for the perfect lunch time snack

Take inspiration from Korean traditions when you fire up the barbecue this year with barbecue beef wraps. Korean BBQ street food expert Korrito has worked with Hellmann’s to recreate a delicious dish that is central to Korean summer time celebrations. Serves 4 Preparation time: 25 mins Cooking time: 10 mins Bulgogi beef ingredients 500g thinly-sliced beef

steak ½ Korean/ regular pea ½ medium white onion 2 tablespoon soy sauce 2 tablespoon brown sugar 1 tablespoon sesame oil 1 tablespoon minced garlic 1 teaspoon black pepper Kimchi slaw ½ green cabbage, shredded 2 medium carrots, julienned 3 bunches of spring onions, finely chopped 1/4 cup chili flakes 2 teaspoons minced garlic

2 teaspoons minced root ginger 2 tablespoons fish sauce 2 tablespoons brown sugar 2/3 cup (70ml) Hellman’s with Olive Oil Lettuce wraps Round butter lettuce Garnish Watercress Sliced radish Spring onion Sesame seeds Combine the pear, white onion, soy sauce, sugar,

sesame oil garlic, black pepper and whiz up the Bulgogi marinade in a blender. Pour over the beef and make sure all the meat is covered evenly. If you can, try to make this the night before and store in the fridge until you are ready to light that BBQ. In a large bowl combine the chili flakes, garlic, ginger, fish sauce and sugar. Then fold in Hellman’s with Olive Oil to create the creamy kimchi flavoured dressing for your slaw. Combine the cabbage, carrot and spring onion with the kimchi flavoured mayonnaise dressing and place in a serving bowl. Preheat the BBQ grill and lightly oil, cook the beef on the hot grill for about 1 minute each side. Top each lettuce leaf with the kimchi slaw, beef and garnish with watercress, thinly sliced radish, spring onion and sesame seeds. The challenge is to devour the whole leaf and contents in one mouthful. sit back and enjoy the amazing flavours!

Serves 4 Preparation time: 30 mins Cooking time: 15 mins 2 cups Asian style sticky rice (300g) 2 cups ripe kimchi finely chopped (OR mix finely chopped blanched chinese cabbage with kimchi paste and salt) 1 tablespoon soy sauce2 tablespoon sesame oil 1 tablespoon butter 3 tablespoon grated Parmesan 2 eggs beaten 1 cup panko breadcrumbs (75g) 4 cups vegetable oil for frying Korean-style aioli ¼ cup Hellmann’s with Olive Oil (55g) 1 tablespoon Gochujang paste (OR mix miso paste, chilli flakes, mirin and sugar) Juice of 1/4 lime ½ teaspoon minced garlic

Homemade eggs benedict A firm brunch favourite recipe if you're staying in

Serves 4 For the english muffins (makes 8) 1¼ tsp active dry yeast 60ml/2fl oz warm water ½ tbsp (superfine) sugar 180ml/6½fl oz) whole milk 335g/12oz) strong white bread flour, plus extra for dusting ¾tsp salt 1tbsp unsalted softened butter oil for greasing 4 eggs 1 tbsp white wine vinegar 4 thick slices cooked ham hock hollandaise sauce (see below) cayenne pepper to serve This is definitely the most requested breakfast wherever I have worked. Ask various folk what their favourite breakfast is and this is always going to come up as a midmorning weekend staple. I don’t know why I am surprised, it is delicious. For Florentine, swap the ham for wilted spinach, for Royale swap in slices of smoked

salmon. the muffins can be made in advance, kept in the fridge for up to a week or even freeze them. For the muffins, stir the yeast into the warm water with a pinch of sugar in a bowl. Allow the yeast to dissolve a little and then add the milk. In another bowl, combine the flour, the remaining sugar and the salt, then mix in the butter. Pour in the yeast mixture and stir until the mixture clumps together. Sprinkle some flour over a clean work surface and scrape the dough out on to it. Knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes elastic. Transfer to a oiled bowl, cover with a clean tea towel and leave in a warm place for 1-1½ hours until the dough has doubled in size. Flour a clean work surface and tip the dough out on to it. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and then roll each one into a ball. Line a baking sheet with baking parchment and place the balls on to it. Cover with the tea towel again and allow to rise for

another hour somewhere warm. Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F/Gas 6). Gently pat the dough balls down to make into muffin shapes. Put a heavy-based frying pan over medium heat and cook the muffins in the pan for 5–6 minutes on each side. You want them to be brown but not burnt. Transfer the muffins to a baking tray and cook in the oven for a further 10–12 minutes. While the muffins are baking, poach the eggs. Add 2cm (¾in) water to a frying pan. Stir in a dash of white wine vinegar and bring the water to a simmer. Crack the eggs into the water, bring to the boil and cook for 1 minute. Once boiling, take the pan off the heat and let the eggs sit in the water until cooked to your liking. For the hollandaise sauce 2 egg yolks 1 teaspoon white vinegar Pinch of salt Pinch of cayenne pepper 110g (3 ¾ oz)cold butter, cubed. Fill a saucepan with just enough boiling water so that when you place a heatproof bowl on the pan, the water doesn’t touch the bottom of the bowl. Place the saucepan over a high heat to keep the water simmering. Add the egg yolks, vinegar, salt and cayenne pepper to the bowl and whisk to combine. Slowly whisk the butter, a cube at a time, until you have a lovely thick pale sauce.

Cook 2 cups of sticky rice in a pot or rice cooker, the ratio of water to rice should be 1:1. Remove the kimchi from the packaging and finely chop. Heat a tablespoon of sesame oil in a large pan, sauté the kimchi until fragrant. Add the cooked rice, soy sauce, remaining sesame oil and a tablespoon of the beaten egg mixture. Mix in the Parmesan. Remove from heat and let the rice cool. While the rice cools, combine the mayonnaise, Gochujang paste, lime juice and garlic to make the aioli. Once the rice is cool enough to handle, roll a handful of rice into bite sized balls. Dip the balls into the egg mix and cover with panko bread crumbs. Heat the oil to 180 °C. Fry the balls until golden brown about 2 mins then serve.

DIRECTOR Todd Phillips GENRE Comedy, Drama, War SYNOPSIS Based on the true story of two young men, David Packouz and Efraim Diveroli, who won a $300 million contract from the Pentagon to arm America's allies in Afghanistan. RELEASE DATE 19 August 2016 DURATION 1hr 54 mins The main takeaway from War Dogs—the funny, sardonic new flick from The Hangover and Old School’s Todd Phillips—is that the government should’ve kept feeding Halliburton no-bid contracts as the Iraq and Afghanistan wars raged. Seriously: If the George W. Bush administration hadn’t

WAR DOGS REVIEW been pressured into implementing a system of competitive bidding on lucrative military contracts, noted scumbags Efraim Diveroli (Jonah Hill) and David Packouz (Miles Teller) wouldn’t have been able to game the system and score a deal worth $300 million to arm the Afghans that they fulfilled by purchasing 100 million rounds of poorly made Chinese ammunition. As I said: We should’ve stuck with Dick Cheney’s boys at Halliburton! It may have cost taxpayers a few extra bucks, but at least the job would’ve gotten done right. No one does war like Halliburton does war. Packouz is a putz, living in South Beach with his unreasonably attractive Cuban para-

mour, Iz (Ana de Armas) and working as a massage therapist with dreams of making his fortune by selling bed sheets. Unlike the war business, the bed sheet business is not booming, and Packouz is on the verge of financial disaster when his old friend Diveroli blows back into town. Having previously sold weapons purchased at police auctions on the Internet, Diveroli has his sights set on the international arms industry. He spends day and night trawling the government’s acquisition database searching for small-bore items like gas masks to bid on, and undercuts the competition with shady, unethical tactics. Diveroli is looking to expand his new company AEY, and

Criminal Minds

brings Packouz on board. Hill lends a subtle sort of semi-psychotic menace to Diveroli. His signature line isn’t a bit of dialogue but a recurring, lilting laugh, one that seems incongruous when paired with Hill’s girth. He also plays nicely off of Teller’s straight man. Whether screaming through deserted Iraqi highways in the middle of the so-called “Triangle of Death” or hanging out in a dilapidated Eastern European nation scrounging for AK-47 ammo, there is a darkly comic sensibility to absurd situations. War Dogs is a lively and funny flick that inadvertently makes the case for keeping the business of war in the hands of soulless mega-corporations. What’s not to love?

In search of the mountain beaches in the Valencia Region Our first stop is La Fuente de los Baños, basically the source where these baths start, located in Montanejos, a mountain village inside the province of Castellon, where the Mijares river leaves behind different natural pools equipped with picnic and play areas for the little ones. It is a paradise of vertical walls (if you are fond of climbing or canyoneering you should not miss this wonderful place) with numerous hiking trails. The water maintains a temperature of 25 degrees throughout the year due to the hot fumes from underground. It is one of the most popular natural pools of Castellón so it is advisable to arrive early to break camp in a good place. Still Castellón, at the famous spot known as the Salto de la Novia, Navajas, the Palancia river delights us with the spectacular waterfall Brazal, a waterfall of more than 30

meters high. Local legends speak about how brides in the past were jumping from the edge to ensure a happy marriage. However, this is a dangerous place to do such a jump, so it is forbidden. The setting is beautiful enough to keep the adrenaline at bay. Facing the waterfall, you can see Mount Rascaña and Cueva del Reloj. We travel now to the beginning of Tuéjar River in the Valencian town with the same name. Here you will find Pozo de las Escaleras, a lagoon of crystal clear water at 18 degrees all year around. The pool is nestled in the recreational area of El Azud, a perfect place for walking, playing sports, relax, have a bath and enjoy the lush vegetation on the banks of this beautiful llagoon.

May betrays children who face a rising tide of preventable cancer Shocked how UK’s government’s pledge to protect the next generation has been watered down

A year ago the government promised action to tackle the staggeringly high levels of child obesity across the country. A third of our children leave primary school overweight, with a fifth already obese. Obesity in childhood almost always leads to obesity in adulthood. The government vowed to produce a game-changing strategy that would make a real difference to our children’s health. Just a few weeks ago, following years of joint working with charities and professionals, it was close to launching this strategy. But now, instead of plans to regulate industry, address unhealthy promo-

tions and stop junk food being advertised on primetime TV, we have a 13-page document with few details, a preponderance of voluntary measures and a blatant disregard for the evidence. The new prime minister entered Downing Street with a pledge to tackle health inequality and to champion the needs of the individual in preference to the “mighty”. Obesity has a disproportionate impact on the poorest in our society. Health inequalities are some of the starkest in the country, and obesity illustrates that perfectly: the poorer you are, the more likely you are to be obese. The new government faced its first test of this pledge

with a chance to address inequality and protect the next generation from diseases such as cancer. This plan fails that test. There can be little doubt that cancer prevention has fallen victim to economic scaremongering and industry lobby-

ing. Last year I was asked to lead a taskforce which developed a strategy to improve cancer services in the NHS. It was clear that one of the first things we needed to do was to reduce the rapidly growing numbers of people diagnosed with cancers that are preventable. Obesity is second only to smoking as the biggest preventable cause of cancer; action on both is needed to have a real impact on the four in 10 cancers that are preventable. If this country doesn’t start tackling obesity now, we will face a burden of disease that we will be unable to cope with. Cancer Research UK has shown that if nothing is done, obesity could cause 670,000 new cases of cancer over the next 20 years in the UK, and millions more

cases of other diseases. An effective strategy needs to be multi-faceted, since obesity is a complex problem. A strong consensus exists on the range of measures necessary. One critical omission in the latest plan is junk food advertising. Academics, medical professionals and health charities have provided the government with clear evidence: children who see junk food adverts are more likely to eat unhealthy food. And if restrictions were in place before the 9pm watershed, children’s exposure to advertising would be more than halved. The reasons why these adverts are so successful are clear. A range of tactics is used to promote junk food, including cartoon characters, celebrity endorsement and movie tie-ins.

THE PLAN HAS BEEN DELAYED There are elements of the plan we welcome. It does re-affirm a commitment to the soft drinks industry levy, a measure that is tried, tested and popular – and that we want brought in without delay. Increased exercise and healthier eating in schools is also to be applauded. There is a welcome attempt to reduce the amount of sugar that children consume. But warm words mean nothing without action. And voluntary commitments with no penalties or enforcement will not protect our next generation from cancers or other illnesses. Nor will they reduce the crippling burden of obesity on the NHS. The chief executive of NHS England has said that obesity could “bankrupt the NHS”. This warning has gone unheeded, and children across the UK will be let down.

Marketing junk food influences both what food children ask their parents to buy and the brands they prefer – setting them up for a lifetime of unhealthy choices. Some will say parents should be responsible for what their children eat. Parents clearly have a key role, but as a father I know the pitfalls of pester power and how hard it can be for families to shun the tempting junk and ensure healthy food is always on the table. The bombardment of junk food advertising on TV doesn’t help. The government readily acknowledges that junk food marketing is a problem. It’s already removed junk food adverts during children’s programming. Public Health England’s evidence review is clear that all forms of marketing influence children. This plan was delayed by a year, with the government stating it wanted to look at “everything that contributes to a child becoming overweight and obese”. To ignore the impact of marketing and in-store promotions is inexcusable. We need the game-changing strategy we were promised. As it stands, our children will suffer from a rising tide of ill-health due to obesity well into the future.

Half of UK parents allow children to drink alcohol at home, says survey Half of parents with children under the age of 14 allow them to drink alcohol at home, research by Churchill home insurance has found. It also found that 34% of parents with children under 14 used alcohol as a bribe to encourage good behaviour, while 11% of parents with children aged five to seven allowed them to drink at home. A quarter of those

surveyed who let their children drink said they saw nothing wrong with it. While it is not illegal for children aged five to 16 to have alcohol at home, the Chief Medical Officer’s report states that children under 14 who drink have increased health risks – including suicide attempts, involvement in violence and alcohol-related injuries. Almost a third of parents

said that allowing their children to drink at home let them monitor their child’s alcohol consumption. The research also suggested that one in five parents would allow minors who are not family members to have alcohol in their house. Martin Scott, head of Churchill home insurance said: “The relationship between children and alcohol in Britain always seems

more fraught than for our continental cousins. Many parents want their children to have a responsible attitude to drinking and introduce alcohol in a safe, controlled environment. “The challenge any parent will recognise is how to prevent excessive drinking, especially amongst teenagers ... Whenever people are drinking in the home, there is a greater risk

of injury or property damage as alcohol has a significant impact on co-ordination.” “The Chief Medical Officer advises that an alcohol-free childhood is the safest option and that those under 15-years-old, ideally, should not drink at all.” Rosanna O’Connor, director of alcohol, drugs and tobacco at Public Health England, said: “Advice from the Chief Medical Officer for

England is that an alcoholfree childhood is the healthiest option. “Most parents are aware of the dangers of children and young people consuming alcohol from an early age and evidence points to the fact that starting to drink alcohol before the age of 15 can affect their health and wellbeing in the future.” So please don’t fall into this trap.

Worry Less and Enjoy More

It is impossible to live life without a little worrying. Nevertheless, worrying is one of the most destructive of human behaviours. Worrying has a deadly effect not just on the mind, but also on the physical body. Worrying creates enormous stress for the body and produces the same effect as physical injury to the body. Worrying increases levels of stress-related hormones such as cortisol and continu-

ously high levels of cortisol shuts down the bodily systems gradually, causing physical illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and low immunity. Worrying has a particularly harmful effect on the brain. On the short term, worrying inhibits concentration, which affects the capacity to find effective solutions for the cause of the worry. Worrying is a major cause of insomnia,

and lack of proper sleep is a contributor to chronic illnesses including hormonal imbalances, sexual dysfunction, depression, and cancer. In today’s world, it is impossible to stop worrying, but you can take steps to limit your worrying: Worry with a purpose: Make sure you understand what your worry is all about. Sometimes when you’re worrying, and you think

about the situation, you find your worry may be totally undefined. Keep it under control: Make sure you are worrying about what you can control. When you realise you cannot control a situation, you find you worry less. Imagine the worst case scenario and become comfortable with it. Rather than continuously worrying about an unknown outcome, you should imagine the worst case scenario, and in many cases, you will find that you can deal with that. Understand that Everyone Worries: You have probably heard the experience of knowing someone for a while and then later hearing their unbelievable story. Realise that you are not alone and that people around you also have serious problems. Do what you can do today: Procrastination is the biggest cause of worry. When you do as much as you can today, you will have less to worry about Stand up straight: You will be surprised how much our posture affects us. When you stand erect, you are more in control of situations. For A Full Body Diagnostic Scan Call MedB Clinic: 965071745, 966189074. Visit www.medb.es

Ebola nurse charged over 'concealing temperature' Pauline Cafferkey, the nurse who nearly died after contracting Ebola as a volunteer in west Africa, has been charged by a regulatory body with concealing her high temperature when she returned to the UK. Cafferkey, hailed as a hero for her work in the Ebola treatment units of Sierra Leone, could be struck off by the Nursing and Midwifery Council if the charges are proved against her. The NMC alleged that the Scottish nurse “allowed an incorrect temperature to be recorded” on 29 December 2014 and “intended to conceal from Public Health England staff that you had a temperature higher than 38C”. A high temperature is one of the first symptoms of Ebola haemorrhagic fever. NHS workers who returned from volunteering were all supposed to fill in questionnaires about their exposure to the virus in their patients and have their temperatures

taken by PHE staff at Heathrow airport. It is the first time the NMC has outlined its complaint against Cafferkey. The NMC has been investigating her and others who returned at the same time for well over a year. During this time, Cafferkey had told friends, she had felt as if her career was on hold. The hearing is expected to be held in Edinburgh next month. Cafferkey nearly died twice – the first time after being diagnosed in Scotland. She was flown to London to be treated in a special tented Ebola isolation unit at the Royal Free hospital. The stories you need to read, in one handy email Read more Last October she developed meningitis as a result of the Ebola virus and had to be transferred to the Royal Free once more. Her condition became critical but she pulled through. Cafferkey returned from

Sierra Leone in December 2014 with a large contingent of NHS volunteers who had completed their tour of duty, as well as other people who had been working in west Africa. PHE had nurses at the airport to take the temperatures of the travellers, but, the Guardian has been told, not enough were stationed there. One of the volunteers who returned at the same time as Cafferkey said they were encouraged by PHE staff to take one another’s temperatures and complete the forms. Cafferkey’s temperature was high, so PHE’s staff were alerted, said the volunteer, who wanted to remain anonymous. Her temperature was taken six more times, but eventually, the volunteer said, Cafferkey was told she could board her flight to Glasgow. With a high temperature, the protocol meant the nurse should have been transferred to a designated hospital nearby, Northwick Park, and seen by an infectious diseases consultant.

Kicking Off With Clever Clogs Clive MRS S's cousin Cockney Clive came up from London the other day. He's a keen soccer fan -I'm not sure which London team he supports because they are all the same to me - so I took him to see my local side Bury in action. 'Not much of an atmosphere,' Cockney Clive commented as we queued outside the ground. 'Typical,' I retorted. 'You Southerners believe civilisation ends north of Milton Keynes. Just you wait until the teams come out.' Cockney Clive turned his head hither and thither. 'Might I point out that it's fiveto-three and not one person has entered the stadium. Also, we are still the only two people in the queue.' 'Mere details,' I scoffed. 'Maybe we've come on the wrong day,' suggested

Cockney Clive. 'Rubbish,' I said, sneaking a furtive look at the calendar on my watch. 'Well, something's wrong,' insisted Cockney Clive. 'And by the way, Dave, why do you have a miniature paper calendar dangling from your watch strap?' A solitary desperate thought knocked on the door of my vacant brain. 'Maybe, just maybe, this is all a bad dream!' I said. 'I could well be fast asleep.' 'An interesting concept,' nodded Cockney Clive who then kicked me hard on the shin. 'Ouch!' I yelled. 'That really hurt. Waddya do that for? Is it some weird London custom?' Cockney Clive said the fact that I had felt genuine physical pain from the kick demonstrated beyond doubt

that I was NOT dreaming. 'Okay, Clever Clogs Clive,' I said. 'But maybe it's YOU who's having the dream!' And with that I launched a hefty kick at my wife's cousin's shin. Cockney Clive remained impassive as a severe jolt shot through MY foot. 'Ouch!' I yelled again and started to hop around in agony. 'What the hell happened there?' Cockney Clive shrugged. 'You simply forgot that I have a false leg,' he said. 'Anyway, your shriek demonstrates once again that this is no dream.' The promise of a Saturday afternoon soccer fest had been swept away by a pathetic one-sided kicking contest. I was bewildered but then again I've been befuddled for most of my life.

I still don't know how heavy planes can stay up in the sky while bicycles, which are lighter, cannot fly. Neither do I know where the sun goes to at night or how a tin opener works. 'I'm not surprised about the tin opener,' Mrs S said the other evening. 'You are quite useless in the kitchen.' 'That's not true,' I countered rather lamely. 'Oh, yeah?' said Mrs S. 'Then how come when I was in hospital having my bunions done, you managed to microwave three pairs of socks and tried to grill sausages in the washing machine?' 'These things happen,' I argued. 'All kitchen appliances look alike to me. Anyway, it's my mother's fault that I'm bewildered most of the time.' 'What's your mother got to

do with it?' asked Mrs S. 'Well,' I said, 'One day when I was a toddler, Mother took me in the trolley to have Dad's old brown brogues soled and heeled. The cobblers was at the top of a hill.' 'Ah!' said Mrs S. 'I can guess what happened. Your mother left the brake off the trolley. It rolled back down the hill, tipped you out and you landed on your head.' 'What on earth gave you that idea?' I asked, genuinely puzzled. 'Nothing of that nature happened. My goodness, you do have a vivid imagination.' 'Oh,' said Mrs S, somewhat deflated that her usual sharp powers of deduction had let her down. We sat in silence for several minutes. Then . . . 'So, a couple of days later, Dad wheeled me back to the cobblers to pick up his

shoes. Unfortunately, he left the trolley brake off. It rolled back down the hill, tipped me out and I landed on my head.' Mrs S glared at me. 'I still don't see how your mother is to blame for your state of bewilderment.' 'Well,' I said, 'If she had gone to a different cobblers to have Dad's shoes mended . . .' Mrs S shook her head in frustration. 'You really should get out more, you know.' 'Incidentally, my cousin, the one with the false leg, is coming to visit us in a couple of days. Why don't you take him to the match on Saturday. That's if you're not too befuddled to remember to ask him.' 'That's how much you know,' I said. 'Bury happen to be playing AWAY on Saturday.'

Ford to build fleet of self-driving taxis Autonomous vehicles will have as big an impact on society as the beginning of the mass production of cars, Ford says

Ford is going to build a huge fleet of cars that can drive themselves and will pick people up around cities. The company is building a “high-volume, fully autonomous” car ready for 2021, it has said. It won’t have a steering wheel or pedals, and is being specifically designed so that many of them can be on the streets. It hopes to use the car to power ride-sharing and ridehailing services – meaning that it would take on Uber,

and look to get rid of the drivers. The cars point to a future where people won’t call for driven taxis, but instead have an autonomous vehicle drive to their house and pick them up. It is the company’s first major leap into autonomous cars being made en masse. The company says that it expects automation to prove as big a change as the introduction of the mass production of cars. “The next decade will be

defined by automation of the automobile, and we see autonomous vehicles as having as significant an impact on society as Ford’s moving assembly line did 100 years ago,” said Mark Fields, Ford president and CEO. “We’re dedicated to putting on the road an autonomous vehicle that can improve safety and solve social and environmental challenges for millions of people – not just those who can afford luxury vehicles.”

Netherlands on brink of banning sale of petrol-fuelled cars 'We need to phase out CO2 emissions and we need to change our pattern of using fossil fuels if we want to save the Earth,' says a Dutch Labour Party member

Europe appears poised to continue its move towards cutting fossil fuel use as the Netherlands joins a host of nations looking to pass innovative green energy laws. The Dutch government has set a date for parliament to host a roundtable discussion that could see the sale of petrol- and diesel-fuelled cars banned by 2025. If the measures proposed by the Labour Party in March

are finally passed, it would join Norway and Denmark in making a concerted move to develop its electric car industry. It comes after Germany saw all of its power supplied by renewable energies such as solar and wind power on one day in May as the economic powerhouse continues to phase out nuclear energy and fossil fuels. And outside Europe, both

India and China have demanded that citizens use their cars on alternate days only to reduce the exhaust fume production which is causing serious health problems for the populations of both nations. The consensus-oriented parties of the Netherlands are set to consider a total ban on petrol and diesel cars in a debate on 13 October. Richard Smokers, princi-

ple adviser in sustainable transport at the Dutch renewable technology company TNO, said the Dutch government was committed to meeting the Paris climate change agreement to reduce greenhouse emissions to 80 per cent less than the 1990 level. The plan requires the majority of passenger cars to be run on CO2-free energy by 2050. "Dutch cities still have

some problems to meet existing EU air quality standards and have formulated ambitions to improve air quality beyond these standards," he told The Independent, adding that the government had at the same time been reluctant to implement strict policies on the environment. "The current government embraces long term targets and strives at meeting EU

requirements, but is hesistant about proposing 'strong' policy measures. "Instead it prefers to facilitate and stimulate initiatives from stakeholders in society." If the law to ban the sale of new fossil-fuel cars by 2025 passes, a significant move will have been made towards phasing out all petrol and diesel cars by 2035, added Dr Smokers.

Hi Richard. Read your pieces in the Courier, wondered if you could help me. Came back from England on Sunday switched laptop on only have half page, it is all lit up but icons normally on bottom are on right hand side chrome start button halfway up left side and everything else is in top half of screen.I don’t seem to have top half at all. Am including picture of screen hope you can help.Regards. Ray.

Hi Ray, it looks to me like you have accidentally extended the height of the task bar, if you move your mouse pointer to the top of the task bar (where the screen is split) it should change to a double headed arrow, if you then click and drag downwards you will reduce the size of the bar back until its normal size at the bottom of the screen.

Hi Richard,I have downloaded Wlingua (Spanish course) on to my tablet and Norton are highlighting it as a major threat. However, I also have it on my laptop but AVG have said there are no threats. Which one am I to believe as I get on quite well with it?Regards Kathy.

Hi Kathy, I have done a fair amount of research on this and I can’t find anything to suggest that WLINGUA is anything other than a legitimate app for your device. You can use the following web page to report a “false positive” to Norton to get final confirmation that the app is indeed safe… https://submit.symantec.com/false_positive/

Sunday 28 August TORREVIEJA wonderkid Nicola Kuhn is on the verge of the tennis bigtime after leaping 308 places up the ATP world rankings this week, writes DONNA GEE. In his first taste of the senior Challenger circuit, Spain’s top junior celebrated his wild card entry by beating world No.320 Juan Pablo Paz of Argentina in the first round at Meerbusch in Germany. The seven ranking points that went with the victory lifted Nico to No.1015 behind the legendary Novak Djokovic - a jump of nearly 1,000 places since the beginning of the year.

And although Nico lost 62 6-3 at Meerbusch to eventual tournament winner Florian Mayer, the 16-yearold prodigy was far from outclassed by a player twice his age, who has beaten both Andy Murray and Rafa Nadal in the past - and twice reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals. Top-seeded Mayer, once ranked No.18 in the world, dropped out of the top 100 after a succession of injuries. However, the German's recent form has been scintillating, and he has soared back to No.59 after a run of ten successive victories and

Orihuela’s sports councillor Damaso Aparicio said that the first deadline of Britain's Chris Froome remained on course to win the Vuelta a Espana going into yesterday’s sixth stage after a late crash caused chaos on Wednesday's stage five. Belgium's Gianni Meersman sprinted to victory, while Darwin Atapuma retained his overall lead despite being one of the riders caught behind the collision. Colombian Atapuma lost more than a minute, but organisers applied the 3km rule to determine finishing times. Froome and secondplaced Alejandro Valverde were part of the bunch sprint having been ahead of the crash. The accident split the pack in the closing stages and ended the race of Dutch rider Steven Kruijswijk, who sus-

tained a suspected broken collarbone. It was a second win in this year's Vuelta for Meersman, who held off the challenge of Italy's Fabio Felline and Kevin Reza of France. Team Sky's Froome is aiming to become the first man in 38 years to win the Vuelta and Tour de France in the same season since the Vuelta moved to its autumn slot in 1995. He attempted the same thing last year but his race was ended by a crash on stage 11 in Andorra in which the Brit broke his foot. The Olympic bronze medallist lived to race another day and with plenty of summit finishes to come he’ll be more than relieved to have stayed upright this time.

Tiger Who? But Could He Become Ryder Cup Captain? It was exactly a year ago that Tiger Woods took the Wyndham Championship by storm in the States. He started the final round two shots off the lead, in search of a win that would end a two-year drought and serve as an emphatic coda to an otherwise disappointing season. After pulling out at the PGA Championship the week prior, Woods made a lastminute decision to add Greensboro to his schedule for the first time. It was a surprising choice, but one that seemed to kickstart his idle game. There were stingers. There were club twirls. There were birdies by the handful, and there were crowds the likes of which only Woods can deliver, as the people of Greensboro flocked to watch a man who once again seemed comfortable in his element. He was back. And just like that, he was gone. Yes, we’ve seen Woods make a handful of appearances since. There was the

analysis of his simulator 9iron back in February, and the disastrous outing at Quicken Loans National media day in May. But 368 days have passed since Tiger’s last competitive swing. A hiatus once measured in weeks and months has stretched to include an entire year, and it may not end anytime soon. Woods announced a pair of back surgeries in the weeks that followed his T10 finish at last year’s Wyndham, and the resulting wait-and-see left legions of fans hoping he would turn up again at Augusta, or perhaps Royal Troon – only to be disappointed each and every time. “While I continue to work hard and get healthy, I am not physically ready to play in this year’s U.S. Open , Woods wrote on June 7th, the most recent health update posted to his website. “I am making progress, but I’m not yet ready for competition.”

Rookies Are In England's Matt Fitzpatrick and Andy Sulllivan have taken the last automatic places in Europe's Ryder Cup team. Europe will have at least five rookies at Hazeltine after the nine qualifiers were decided with a week to spare. Belgian Thomas Pieters needed to defend his Czech Masters title and Irishman Shane Lowry required a topfour finish in the Wyndham Championship in America to stay in contention. Both men missed out, handing places to Fitzpatrick and Sullivan.

Pieters only lost out by a single shot to American Paul Peterson on Sunday, while Lowry's closing 67 was not enough to put him among the leaders in North Carolina. That means Rory McIlroy, Danny Willett, Henrik Stenson, Chris Wood, Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose, Rafael Cabrera-Bello, Sullivan and Fitzpatrick are guaranteed to go to Minnesota in September in search of a fourth straight win over the USA. Willett, Wood, Cabrera-Bello, Sullivan and Fitzpatrick will be making their debuts in the event.

When that return to competition might occur remains the subject of much conjecture. Some hold out hope that he’ll tee it up at the season-opening Safeway Open, while others target the limited-field Hero World Challenge in December or even tournaments in early 2017, at which point Woods will be 41 years old. When asked for a view last Monday, Woods’ agent Mark Steinberg offered little insight. Whenever Woods does get back inside the ropes, it’s not even clear what equipment he’ll be using. Nike’s recent decision to get out of the golf equipment market means that Woods is shopping for a potential suitor, adding yet another variable to the growing equation. While so much surrounding Woods’ status remains uncertain, the impact of his lengthy absence on the PGA Tour is quite evident. You look at tournaments like Bay

Hill, the tournaments that he’s accustomed to playing. The crowds they get, that they get for him, it’s not the same. It’s disappointing that he’s not out there playing as you don’t feel the energy, which gets extra special when he’s near the lead. There was strong fan support this year at the Wyndham, as spectators flocked to local favorites like Webb Simpson and Bill Haas as well as another surprising tournament newcomer, Rickie Fowler, with Britain’s Luke Donald finishing second. But the modest crowds that are now gathered around tees and greens only highlighted the fact that the mass influx sparked by Woods’ appearance last year won’t be seen here again anytime soon. Like it or not Tiger is still the biggest draw in our game. I understand that they look at Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, and they get big fans, but Tiger’s in a different

TITTER ON THE TEE A circus owner runs an ad for a lion tamer and two people show up. One is an older retired golfer in his late sixties and the other is a female blond in her mid-twenties. The circus owner tells them, "I'm not going to sugar coat it. This is one ferocious lion. He ate my last tamer so you two had better be good or you're history. Here's your equipment -- chair, whip and a gun. Who wants to try out first?" The girl says, "I'll go first." She walks past the chair, the whip and the gun and steps right into the lion's cage. The lion starts to snarl and pant and begins to charge her. About halfway there, she throws open her coat revealing her naked body. The lion stops dead in his tracks, sheepishly crawls up to her and starts licking her feet and ankles. He continues to lick and kiss her entire body for several minutes and then rests his head at her feet. The circus owner's jaw is on the floor. He says, "I've never seen a display like that in my life." He then turns to the retired golfer and asks, "Can you top that?" The tough old golfer replies: - "No problem, just get that lion out of there."

level. He’s in a level that few have ever been. Much has changed in golf over the last year. Danny Wilett, Dustin Johnson and Henrik Stenson have become major champions. Jason Day has cemented his status as the world’s best player, while another promising crop of young guns has found its footing. The biggest figure in golf, however, remains stuck in neutral. Obviously I’d love to see him come back and potentially start winning events again; He’s been so great for the game attracting big sponsors and increasing prize money. But we all know he’s got health issues, and time could be against him now. All that remains are the memories, along with the fervent hope that we’ll someday be able to witness it all again. But will he be held in the same esteem as the likes of Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus? His legacy is without question, but the adoration is far from uni-

versal. His influence on the game has been a mixture of positives and negatives, much like the man himself. For every Major title there was a misdemeanor, spiting, club throwing, swearing…take your pick. That’s without even mentioning his indiscretions off the course. In pure golfing terms his achievements demand the utmost respect. Bring the man into the equation and it can’t be denied the histrionics and controversy cast a big shadow over his legendary status. A fully fit Tiger would now struggle against the new breed, the changing guard has already started and not the super-human efforts of fitness will stop it, and if he comes back what clubs will he have to get used to, now Nike have pulled out? I hope he comes back and I hope he does so in a health state. I’d just like to see him give it one last good shot and many fans would love to see it.

Pique In No Doubt

Left To Sweat CD Torrevieja 3 CD Almoradi 2 When does an opening day victory turn into defeat despite having scored more goals, and then becomes a win again? The answer is when you field a player that the opponents CD Almoradi thought should have been suspended after being sentoff in the last fixture of the previous season for his exclub. The player in question was CD Torrevieja’s Matheus who scored the first goal, but was sent off in his final outing back in the spring for Torrevieja CF, and therefore according to Almoradi, should have sat out Sunday’s opener! After the full time-whistle blew at the Vicente Garcia stadium, joy turned to behind the scenes despair for Torry as Almoradi pointed out that the home side had broken the rules, with

Matheus not even aware that he had done anything wrong. The matter was taken to the Valencian Football Federation who ruled in Torrevieja’s favour on the basis that his sending-off could not be transferred to a higher level division, and so the three points were handed back to them, though Almoradi do have a week to appeal. As for the match itself, CD Almoradi returned to the third division after 19 years, and their side was packed with seven ex-Torry players, yet it was the home team that showed more flair and greater fire-power compared to the last disappointing season. All three Torry strikers Matheus, Lewis and Zapata scored and each of them was sharp, committed and eager to show their worth.

Almoradi played their part with former Torry favourite Obele heading home to bring them back into the game at 2-1 and Poveda heading in another with two minutes left on the clock. That made it 3-2 and created a swashbuckling finale. Before that, Torry created many chances but it was not until the 73rd minute that the "illegal" Matheus claimed the ball inside the box on the left side and rifled it home, with Lewis keeping a watchful eye in case it might miss the mark. Two minutes later it was Lewis who nearly ripped the back of the net apart with a left foot drive that screamed into the net. The final Torry goal was netted by main striker Zapata, but that was the cue for a post-match discussion on the legality of playing

Matheus. Torry's defence was breached by two well taken Almoradi headers, but despite the quality of these goals, manager Correa will be alarmed as to why his defenders did not get close to the scorers. They’re away to Villarreal on Sunday with a 7.45 pm start. Almoradi will open up their home account this weekend against fellowpromoted side Silla CF, who beat Borriol one-nil in their opener. The match kicks-off at 11.30 am. In last weekend’s other third division group six matches, Elche Ilicitano beat Crevillente three-one, whilst Orihuela had a goaless draw at Muro. This Sunday, Orihuela are at home to Alzira; Elche Ilicitano go to Paterna; and Crevillente entertain Almazora.

Shame On Them Racist chants forced a referee to stop play during Sunday's La Liga encounter between Sporting Gijon and Athletic Bilbao with the abuse aimed at Bilbao player Iñaki Williams. Referee Clos Gomez said that he suspended play during the first half when he heard "monkey calls" being shouted from one section of El Molinon Stadium directed at Williams. Gomez said that play was suspended for a minute while a warning was given on the public address system, with the insults stopping. 22-yearold Williams was born and raised in Bilbao by a Ghanaian father and Liberian mother, and joined Athletic’s youth squad when he was 18, becoming the first black player to score for the 'Basque only' club in 2014. Since then he has made over 60 appearances for his club and earned his first national team cap for Spain in May.

Mixed Fortunes

CD Thader of Rojales were on the different end of a couple of 3-1 results as they continue the build up to the start of their season in nine days time. Last week they visited San Miguel where they dominated the first half especially, running out as 3-1 winners, but then last Saturday they took on Santa Pola, and were beaten having conceded three goals in the space of five minutes. Tonight (Friday), they go to

Pilar for an 8.30 pm kick-off, and then the season gets going on Sunday September 4th, as they entertain

Barcelona's domestic dominance shows they are by far the best team in Spain, and perhaps Europe according to centre-back Gerard Pique. The Catalans claimed a treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League in Luis Enrique's first season in charge, and followed up that success with another domestic double last term. With Barca having lifted the Supercopa de Espana this month and started their league title defence with a 6-2 thrashing of Real Betis at Camp Nou, Pique is in no

doubt over who is the team to beat in Spain's top flight. Looking ahead to Barca's aims for this season, he told the Marca sports newspaper: "Of course the Champions League is very important because it's the most prestigious, but we've spent two years winning La Liga and the Copa.” "It's something very important because we've shown we are the best team in this country by far. Two consecutive doubles haven't come about for a number of years. That means that we're by far the team to beat."

Monte Friendly

CD Montesinos host their third build-up match ahead of the new season this evening (Friday) as they entertain San Isidro with a 9.00 pm kick-off. The new campaign next month will see Monte start their fixtures at Benijofar who finished just above them in the table back in May. Tonight’s

matches will see season tickets on sale for 30 euros each. Last week Monte drew nil-nil with Torrevieja CF with key players the captain Fernando and returning striker Vaz not likely to be fit for the Benijofar starter as they are recovering from injury.

Wales forward Gareth Bale scored twice as Real Madrid opened their La Liga season on Sunday with a win at Real Sociedad. It was a fantastic first half from Los Blancos, with an early goal from Bale and a beautifully-taken second from Asensio giving Zinedine Zidane's men a comfortable lead at the Anoeta Stadium.Bale rounded Sociedad keeper Geronimo Rulli to score again in the final minute for last season's runners-up. Luis Suarez scored a hat-trick and Lionel Messi netted a double as Barcelona got their La Liga title defence off to the perfect start last Saturday with a demolition job over Real Betis at the Nou Camp. Arda Turan gave the Catalans an early lead against Gus Poyet's side after he cooly finished a Jordi Alba pull-back in the sixth minute. Ruben Castro then fired Betis level with a thunderous freekick that Claudio Bravo was powerless to stop, but from then it was the Suarez and Messi show as the deadly duo each scored braces that put the game well out of Betis' reach. Castro scored a late consolation for the visitors but by then the damage had already well and truly been done. Barcelona are away to Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.

Early Nail Gnawers Leicester midfielder Danny Drinkwater has signed a new five-year contract which keeps him at the King Power Stadium until 2021.The 26-year-old joins the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Jamie Vardy, Kasper Schmeichel, Wes Morgan and Andy King in committing his future to the Premier League champions. He told told the club's website: "I've loved playing for this club, it's been perfect for me and my career and I want to be here for a long time to come. I couldn't be happier.

A Winning Start

Who’s played two, lost two, then? Step forward Sunderland, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth. David Moyes badly needs to find the switch to turn on the Stadium of Light, or the future could be very dark for the Black Cats, writes JOHN MCGREGOR. Tomorrow the ex-Man Utd boss has an opportunity away at stuttering Southampton. One time tipped to be England’s next manager, Crystal Palace’s Alan Pardew has carried on from where he left off last season - where but for a good start the Eagles would have been relegated. Now a huge burden has been placed on the very broad shoulders of Christian Benteke, unloved and unwanted (albeit expensive at £30m) at Anfield, but can the goal makers at Selhurst Park provide the ex-Villa hero with the necessary ammunition? After a wonderful, fairytale debut season down on the posh south coast, Eddie Howe’s lads have started badly, only one goal in two games. Guess what? In an ironic nobody-dares-lose clash Palace host the Cherries tomorrow. An early six-pointer for the victors…

Early Belter! Only seven thousand spectators turned up at the Martinez Valero stadium last Saturday evening to see Elche come from behind to win their opening match of the season against a team that were relegated from the top flight of La Liga in May. The game started brightly with Elche netting after nine minutes only for the goal to be disallowed for offside, and then Rayo took the lead four minutes later thanks to a powerful strike from Ebert. The home side were back on level terms shortly afterwards in the 17th minute with Josete heading in the equaliser through a Matilla free kick. Both teams played positively and Elche went in front on 36 minute mark when Matilla converted a penalty after new striker Guillermo was brought down in the box. That was it for the scoring and Elche had greater control of the match in the second half with Matilla crashing a free kick onto the crossbar, whilst the visitors exerted a lot of late pressure but could not get the equaliser. Coach Alberto Toril said it was the best possible start for his side and said he was pleased with the quality of the football. The Ilicitanos are away to Girona tomorrow evening (Saturday).

The Saturday lunchtime Premier League match gets the weekend off to a terrific start. This will be Spurs’ last season at White Hart Lane, and the final Premier visit of Liverpool to this famous ground leaves both clubs with a lot to prove. Spurs are reasonably seventh after beating Palace and drawing at Everton, but Liverpool’s puzzling 2 – 0 defeat by Prem returnees Burnley makes no sense, taking into account the Reds smashed four past Arsenal at The Emirates on the opening day. Good question: how did Burnley win with only 21% of the play? Answer: dunno, that’s football – your call… but don’t miss Pochy v Kloppy!

Januzaj Strikes Late! Adnan Januzaj struck late as Sunderland beat Shrewsbury 1-0 to seal their first victory under David Moyes and reach the third round of the EFL Cup. The 21-year-old needed 83 minutes of a largely turgid cup-tie to find his range, blasting a rightfooted shot past keeper Jayson Leutwiler to spare a crowd of just 13,979 at the Stadium of Light further punishment after back-to-back league defeats. Having admitted his side is likely to be involved in another relegation battle after a pointless start to the Premier League campaign, Moyes may have welcomed the distraction of a cup game against lower league opposition, although injuries and a stagnant transfer market meant he was unable to make wholesale changes to his line-up.

Celtic Back Where Brendan Rodgers says his Celtic side took "a huge step" by qualifying for the group stage of the Champions League. Despite losing 2-0 to Hapoel Beer Sheva in Israel, the Scottish champions won the play-off 5-4 on aggregate. "They're going back in amongst Europe's elite - it's where Celtic belong," said Rodgers. "Tonight was really about getting through and all the plaudits go to the players because they got through." Goals from Ben Sahar and Ovidiu Hoban made the match a nervous experience for

Bilic Admits Interest In Bony & Zaza Slaven Bilic has confirmed West Ham's interest in forwards Wilfried Bony and Simone Zaza. The Hammers are aiming to bolster their forward line before the close of the summer transfer window, with strikers Andre Ayew, Andy Carroll and Diafra Sakho currently sidelined through injury. The Courier understands that West Ham are keen to sign Bony on loan from Manchester City until January to alleviate their striking crisis, while Zaza's father has claimed his son has a "concrete offer" from the east London club.

They Belong ‘Rodgers’ Celtic but they did enough to avoid conceding a third that would have taken Hapoel through on away goals. The aggregate success takes Celtic back into the group stage - a feat they were unable to achieve under Rodgers' predecessor Ronny Deila over the past two seasons. "This is a huge step for us," said Rodgers, whose club stands to make around £30m from the group stage. "It's an incredible moment for them. "We've only been together a short period of time. We've made huge strides as a team and as a club in every way”.

Who’s the odd one out? Man City, Man Utd, Hull City, Chelsea – all four have a 100% record so far with two games and two wins, writes JOHN MCGREGOR. Easy answer, but just how modest, managerless, merely 13 fitfirst-teamers Hull* from the provinces are up there with the big city billionaires of the league is unreal - and plainly cannot go on, starting Saturday, see below. Here, hang on a mo, though – didn’t WE all say that 12 months ago when WE all poked fun at … Leicester, you know, with their comic loser Italian manager (oh yes WE did). Well, WE all know who had the last laugh there! But could lightning strike twice? *Actually, don’t laugh but this could be a great year for the City of Hull, because it is also the City of Culture for 2017. Actually the faultless record can’t go on, because Hull host Man United in the Saturday evening match, so something has to give. The Tigerish spirit of the Humbersiders has so far seen victories over Leicester (hmm..) and now Swansea, but surely

Mourinho’s mighty men will provide the stiffest of tests. The new United is packed with talent and experience: £90m Pogba looks confident and competent, Ibrahimovic is still big and powerful with three goals already to back up Rooney, De Gea, Shaw, Blind – oh, and just to confound the critics, Mata. Yes, United will take some stopping this season, but the favourites to do so only live just down the road. Already Pep Guardiola’s new-look Manchester City look awesome, and the Spaniard’s powerful presence has already caused national ripples with the dropping of number one England goalkeeper Joe Hart - oh, and Barcelona goalkeeper Claudio Bravo having a medical at Manchester City yesterday. All that won’t do Sam Allardyce’s confidence in his main stopper a lot of good to begin the exSunderland manager’s tenure as England manager. Just where jilted Joe will jump to seems to be anyone’s guess. No-one saw that coming, a real bombshell, but then the mighty Yaya Toure, Sami Nasri, Wilfried Bony and Elequim Mangala all appear to be yesterday’s men – but still City’s bench looks awesome.

Sunday’s Match of the Day sees West Ham visiting the expectant Etihad. The Hammers manager Slaven Bilic has a lot on his plate what with a new home at the London Stadium (don’t mention the Olympics), and has bought half a new team in the close season. Last night (after T h e

Courier went to press) saw the return home leg of the Europa League qualifier second leg against Astra Giurgiu with the tie standing at 1-1. West Ham United were bidding to join new P r e m i e r League rivals Southampton and Man United in today's draw for the group stages.

GOLF Rory McIlroy admits he was "somewhat proven wrong" in his belief that golf would not be a success at Rio 2016. McIlroy, 27, was among several high-profile withdrawals from the tournament over concerns about the Zika virus. BOXING Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez is expecting fireworks when he fights Britain's Liam Smith for his WBO lightmiddleweight title on September 17 in Texas. Alvarez (47-1-1-KO33) faces an English opponent for the second fight in succession after knocking out Amir Khan in devastating fashion in the sixth round of their bout in May. TENNIS Roger Federer is aiming to be fit for next year's Australian Open after injury wiped out the last half of his 2016 season. Federer, 35, has been out of action since late July - his last match was a Wimbledon semi-final loss to Milos Raonic. The 17-time Grand Slam winner had surgery in February.

CITY ALL HART! Man City went through to last night’s Champions League draw, writes JOHN MCGREGOR, after comfortably beating Steaua Bucharest 1 – 0 at the Emirates on Wednesday. It was pretty much a reserve side captained by – only Joe Hart (pictures on pages 46 and 47), in what might have been his last game for City, and who received a standing ovation from his loyal, but baffled supporters. The only goal was scored by Fabian Delph, a good player but unlikely to feature in Pep Guardiola’s first team. The Spanish coach gave an animated performance on the touchline while strongly ‘advising’ his players, newbie John Stones a particular target. There will be many continental sides who will fear the new Manchester City.

The former Germany captain, who retired from international duty this month, has been exiled from firstteam duty by Jose Mourinho and has yet to be named in a matchday
