LET’S START AGAIN! New Tender For Paseo Work

BY ALEX TRELINSKI

O

rihuela council is planning 137 changes to the authority’s budget and credit line to free up one point three extra million euros which include kickstarting the delayed improvement work on the Paseo de Cabo Roig, which has been closed due to rock falls. The tender process for the project though, will have to start from scratch, with over 600 thousand euros also pledged for road resurfacing and pavement improvements across the Orihuela Costa, as well as the extra money also set to be used to fund the 400thousand-euro makeover

of Orihuela City’s bull ring. Tuesday’s news came in the wake of criticism from Cambiemos Orihuela spokesperson, Marta Guillén, that the work at Cabo Roig had been held up because of “incompetence and irregularities by the council”, with the delays meaning that the “credit line” for the project was no longer in place, whilst money appeared to have been found for the bullring work in Orihuela. Rafael Almagro of the ruling Partido Popular responded by saying that a special plenary session of the authority has been called for next week which will see the government

team seek approval for one point three million extra euros of expenditure on work all across the Orihuela area including the delayed work on the Paseo. Despite two specific pledges (as previously

reported by The Courier) from Orihuela coastal councillor, Sofía Álvarez that work would start in March and then in June, there’s been no progress on the project, which according to Almagro’s statement on Tuesday appears to have had 100 thousand euros shaved from its budget. He admitted that since the financial arrangements have changed, the contract for the work will have to start from scratch. Almagro added that council technicians will work out which areas of the Orihuela Costa need to be prioritised for road and pavement enhancements, which means that no particular parts of the coastal area have so far been targeted.

A Torrevieja man has been convicted of a raping a German tourist 13 years ago because the victim provided DNA samples in her native country when she returned. Authorities matched them up years later to a Cuban national who was sentenced to 17 years in prison in 2011 for stabbing a woman to death in Torrevieja after she refused to have sex with him. His DNA details appeared on a datebase of killers and German authorites sent their samples which were matched up by their Spanish counterparts. The unnamed man will now serve an additional seven years for rape and theft once his sentence for murder finishes. Back in 2003, the victim had a row with her husband at a Torrevieja address where they were staying and left to go the Guardia Civil to file a complaint. The Cuban national offered to take her to the Guardia bar-

racks, but instead took her to a building site where he raped her and stole some money. The traumatic circumstances saw the woman confused over what legal road she had to go down as she went to a health centre and then hospital, and did not not know that she had to make a formal complaint before the Guardia could start an investigation. She immediately took a taxi to go to Alicante Airport, where she then caught the first available flight to Germany, arriving home in Dusseldorf. She filed a complaint to the German police, where she was medically examined as well as having the clothes that she was wearing at the time of the rape taken, along with providing samples. Her course of action paid off years later when the DNA databases matched after her assailant’s murder conviction.

Stalker Charges An Orihuela man has been arrested by the National Police after allegedly trying to kill his estranged wife by cutting the brake cables on her car. The 33-year-old former husband separated from his partner in the summer but

they then tried for a reconciliation without success. The 27-year-old woman told the police that he had been stalking her for a fortnight last month, with the man facing charges of attempted murder, abuse, and criminal damage.

Tractor Death The Guardia Civil is investigating the death of a 36-yearold Almoradi man, when his tractor came off a service road in Los Clérigos in the Callosa

de Segura area. The incident happened last Friday with the vehicle ending up in a three metre irrigation canal.

Three young children took cannabis in separate incidents over a fortnight and were taken for treatment to the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital in Murcia City. The toddlers, aged between one and three, are not from the same family and the cases are not linked at all. All the youngsters suffered from breathing difficulties after ingesting the drug, with

two of them losing consciousness before they recovered in the hospital's intensive care unit. Tests confirmed the presence of tetrahydrocannabinoids – the main ingredient in cannabis – in their systems. Social services have been informed of each case and are closely monitoring the children's situations, having also contacted the

Guardia Civil as part of standard procedure. Officers are attempting to find out whether the three children ate marijuana through their parents' negligence or were even given it, or whether the incidences are completely accidental and beyond their families' control. Depending upon the outcome, the children may be taken into care.

Family Strangling A man aged in his forties has been arrested by the National Police for allegedly strangling his 89-year-old aunt, with the body lying at their home on Alicante’s Calle Pintor Aparicio for a week. The nephew turned himself into the National Police in Alicante on Monday, with neighbours saying that he had lived with his aunt for three years after returning to

Spain from Norway, where he had split up with his wife. They claimed that he was

jobless and lived off his aunt, as well having “a drinking problem and no friends”.

Unhappy Toretta A Torrevieja neighbourhood association says they’ve had a raw deal in the last 30 years with nine million euros in IBI taxes being paid to the council, with very little in return. Fifteen-hundred residents live in Toretta III and the association has published a legal report to look at what they claim are inadequacies across the board in the urbanisation which was built in the early eighties. Amongst the gripes is a lack of mainte-

nance of the roads, pavements, and street lighting, as

well as the common green areas being ignored.

Listen To The Band

Cheaper Fills

Beach Tragedy A 75-year-old Norweigan man died last Friday lunchtime when he was swimming at Cabo Roig beach. Paramedics were unable to revive him, with the likely cause of death being a heart attack.

Sunday’s La Unión parade celebrating the Virgen del Rosario took an unexpected turn when a member of a band taking part in the procession was hit by a man, who got out of his car after illegally driving down the main street in the Murcia region town. The 32-year-old Moroccan motorist was said to have driven dangerously on the road after

gaining access by removing a barrier. He weaved his way round at speed whilst pedestrians watched aghast before he came across the Virgen de la Caridad band, and was told by one of the instrumentalists to take care. The driver got out of the car and head-butted the young man, before he was restrained by other members of the band, as

he shouted profanities and threats at them. The parade was suspended whilst the local police arrested the man, who lives locally, and took him to the local health centre after he complained of suffering with neck pain. Mayor Pedro Lopez Milan said that the incident was regrettable but should not overshadow the fiesta celebrations.

Guilt Admitted A 49-year-old Spaniard pled guilty and accepted an 18-year jail sentence at his trial in Elche after stabbing his partner's 10-year-old son to death in Torrevieja. The incident happened back in May 2015 in the Torrealmendros urbanisation at his girlfriend’s home. The man, with the initials ABG, sobbed as the court heard what happened on the fateful evening after he got into an argument with his partner. She ran out of her home to call for help, but then matters turned worse. The man stabbed her son repeatedly with an 18-centimetre

Low-cost filling stations with minimal staffing are booming in Alicante Province, according to figures from the Federación Mediterránea de Estaciones de Servicio, who say there are 300 such stations in the area, putting it alongside Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia in terms of growth. Torrevieja has seen six low- cost outlets opening over the last year, like the Gas

Express station at San Luis, Torrevieja.. The Federación has criticised some stations for breaking Valencian government laws over staffing, with the group claiming that a number have been open during the day without anybody present. Another group, la Asociación Provincial de Gasolineras, has branded the low cost stations as unfair competition.

Come And Go Overnight hospital stays are being reduced across Alicante Province with over 28 thousand operations being carried out during the first five months of 2016, where the patient can go home within a matter of hours. Health department figures show that an overnight hospital stay costs 341 euros per patient and that means that over nine million euros have been saved so far this year until the end of May. The percentage of such "out-patient" operations now account for 60 percent of all operations, with

Alicante General Hospital performing the most at just over five thousand.

Green Cheers knife, with the Guardia Civil having to break into the home via a window, but the child died an hour after the assault.

The mother is set for compensation of nearly 53 thousand euros and 38 thousand euros to the child's father.

Parents Detained A Romanian couple have been remanded into custody by an Orihuela judge after the body of a newly born baby was discovered in a rubbish container in Pilar de la Horadada. Two other people face charges of covering up the crime and live at the same address on Calle Miguel de

Cervantes. The couple, who have two young children, admitted that the baby, which was wrapped in a blanket and a rubbish bag, was theirs, with the Valencia Supreme Court saying that the case is being treated as a homicide investigation.

The bar on the Orihuela Costa beach at La Glea, Campoamor, has been voted Spain’s most environmentally friendly beach bar in an internet poll carried out by Fundación Biodiversidad. The Chiringuitos del Sol owned outlet received a special certificate from Raquel

Orts of the environment ministry and Fundación Biodiversidad chief, Sonia Castañeda. 26 bars in eleven provinces took part in the competition, with La Glea getting 33 percent of the votes cast that were cast online.

Lighter View

Guardamar's El Raso urbanisation is set for a major revamp of its street lighting, along with improvements to parts of Guardamar town itself. The council say that the work will cost 109 thousand euros but did not say when exactly they expect the project to start.

Brighter Future Torrevieja's La Mata area is to get improved energy efficient street lighting, thanks to a 240-thousand euro grant from the Alicante Provincial Council. Street lamps are set to be repainted and control boxes overhauled as a result of the regional money. Last year the council lost a similar grant for the city's Rocio del Mar area because it missed the deadline to lodge its application form with the Alicante authority.

Doggie Treat Work is progressing well on the Vega Baja region's first purpose-built dog play park which is being constructed in Guardamar. The facility is being built in the Parque Sur helped by funding from the Alicante Provincial Council. Meanwhile, redevelopment work is expected to start soon on the Torrevieja entrance side of Avenida PaĂs Valenciano, as part of the Plan Larramendi, which is a whole series of phased improvements around the centre of Guardamar.

All Clear

San Javier's beaches saw nearly 14 thousand people get helped in all shapes and sizes from the lifeguards during the summer season, with no loss of life on any of the local beaches. Lifeguard

assistance included first aid provision as well as helping some two thousand disabled and infirm people enjoy their time in the local waters, in addition to answering general queries.

Perilous Voyage Spanish Maritime Rescue services confirmed that they rescued around 200 immigrants and took them to ports in Spain late on Saturday. The news came barely two days after the vessel "Rio Segura" saved the lives of 1,258 immigrants in the largest rescue Spanish Maritime rescue services have ever made in the Mediterranean Sea. Saturday saw the 200 immigrants lifted off seven different dinghies from different points off the coast of Spain. Some 53 people, all from the Maghreb, were lifted off a boat which was approaching the coast of Murcia and taken to Cartagena. Meanwhile, other operations took place in the Sea of Alboran, which is an area of the Mediterranean midway between the south coast of Spain and the north coast of Africa.

Another 56 immigrants, six of whom were children under four years old, were taken from one dinghy in that area, while a further 32, including 17 women, were saved close to the Island of Alboran after rescue services received a call from an aid worker alerting of their departure from the NorthAfrican coast. In a different operation, some 15 more immigrants were rescued from a dinghy

16 miles off the coast of Almeria before being taken into the port for medical treatment and subsequently being turned over to the Guardia Civil. The current high numbers of immigrants making the crossing is a result of the exceptionally calm weather experienced in the Western Mediterranean at the start of October, giving good conditions to make the hazardous voyage.

Grounded Whale

A controversial Torrevieja building, nicknamed La Ballena (The Whale), is set to be demolished at a cost of 200 thousand euros after lying empty for the last decade. Two years ago a homeless man started a blaze in the

building on Calle Pedro Lorca in the La Punta area of the city, and the block has since been the subject of numerous complaints from the local residents. Torrevieja council has announced that a tender for

the demolition work can be finally advertised after a series of delays and the granting of permission from the Local Government Board. The work was already budgeted for with money allocated back in 2015.

No Hiding Place

A British teacher accused of sex offences has been detained by the National Police in Barcelona, after skipping a court appearance in Essex. Cory Baptiste, 24, was taken into custody in

Barcelona on a European Arrest Warrant. He was due at Basildon Crown Court in August, charged with five offences against children. The National Crime Agency said: "He appeared at a

Spanish court and extradition proceedings are under way." Baptiste has been charged with five offences of abusing a position of trust involving children aged 17 years and under.

Exploiter Jailed

A sex club owner has been given a four year and three month jail sentence by the Alicante Provincial Court after being found guilty of exploiting women. The unnamed man ran three businesses which had 33 women, 20 of whom were illegal immigrants mainly from Paraguay, on his books. They were forced to work in brothels based in Villena as well as further away in Cuenca, Ibiza and Mallorca, after being told they would be employed as waitresses, as opposed to prostitutes. The gang would bring the women to Spain, before

delivering them to the club owner, who would confiscate their passports and order them to pay for their flights as well as charging a fee for "employing" them.

The women were forced to pay for the rental of a room at each club, as well as being penalised for missing work or indulging in "freelance" activities.

Father’s Rage A man was arrested in Adra in Almeria Province by the Guardia Civil after holding his family hostage. The 38-yearold kept his son, 18, daughter, 10, the son’s 15-year-old girlfriend and their six-month-old baby in his home against their will. He was reportedly trying to get them to tell him where his estranged wife was. It is not known how long he kept the family hostage, but he used a loaded pistol to threaten them and would not let them leave the house at the same time. Authorities were only made aware of the

kidnapping when his daughter went to the Guardia after escaping from the property. They raided the home and

discovered a fully-operational loaded handgun along with a supply of 60 rounds of ammunition.

Noisy Removal A South American woman was rescued from what is being described as a cult exorcism after her neighbours heard 'blood-curdling screams' coming from her flat in northern Spain. Police were called to the property in Plaza de la Gesta in Oviedo, after reports of a screaming woman. The woman, whose identity is being protected, was taken to hospital after she was found in a 'state of great mental anguish' surrounded by sever-

al other people being led by a 'shaman'. The woman was discharged hours later after it was confirmed that she had suffered no physical injury. Benito Gallego, dean of Oviedo Cathedral said:- 'It

Orihuela mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, used Sunday's traditional celebrations of Valencia Day to warn the Regional Government that Orihuela and the Vega Baja area needs to keep its tradition of using the Spanish language as the primary language within its schools. The Valencian government wants all schools to maintain

the teaching of subjects using the regional valenciano language, which is rarely used in the southern tip of the large region, with Bascuñana saying that encouragement was the way forward rather than compulsion. The Partido Popular mayor also fired a broadside at the PSOE-led Valencia coalition for offering a better deal to

The mayor's comments came in a year when the regional administration agreed to finance a new health centre in Orihuela City, in addition to breaking the log jam over the incompleted emergency services centre for the Orihuela Costa based on a site at La Zenia.

Fags Thwarted

The Guardia Civil have stopped three passengers trying to smuggle in thousands of contraband cigarettes into Spain, by not declaring them when passing through customs at AlicanteElche airport. Officers say that the three separate incidents over the

last fortnight totalled up to nearly three thousand packets which would have fetched around 10 thousand euros on the black market, with none of the packets having approved taxation marking on them. Two of those detained had jetted in from Amsterdam.

Limit Changes

Agent Arrested A National Police officer has been taken into custody and had bail refused by an Alicante police court, after being accused of crimes of sexual abuse and assualt involving underage teenage boys. Extensive investigations by the National Police led to the arrest of the 32year-old agent, with indecent images of children found on his mobile phone. The man denies charges of meeting any boys, and he stated that he only used adult dating sites.

Unruly Stags Stag party revellers were arrested at Alicante-Elche airport last week after feuding parties caused a disturbance on a Ryanair flight from Edinburgh. Frightened families cowered in their seats as the drunken louts went wild on the three-hour trip, A 10-year-old child was hit on the head by a flying wine bottle as scuffles broke out between the rival groups, a mother travelling with her two children told the Daily Record newspaper. She claimed many among them were "absolutely hammered" before the flight took off at 11.15am. Police officers greeted the troublemakers when the flight landed, but some of

the troublemakers were sober enough to swap clothes to try to confuse the Ryanair staff. The shocked mum said: "Everyone I spoke to said they'd never experienced anything like it." Ryanair confirmed their crew had requested police

assistance, and four passengers were removed and detained at Alicante-Elche airport. A spokesman added: "We will not tolerate unruly or disruptive behaviour and the safety and comfort of our customers, crew and aircraft is our number one priority."

Convicted Again The British Government has announced plans to scrap the current 15-year time limit on British citizens who live in Spain registering as overseas electors. The changes would give all eligible British citizens who have lived in the UK a lifelong right to vote in parliamentary elections. It would mean all eligible overseas electors are able to register to vote quickly and easily, while maintaining the integrity of the

electoral register and guarding against fraud. Chris Skidmore, Minister for the Constitution, said: “British citizens who move abroad remain a part of our democracy and it is important they have the ability to participate. Following the British people’s decision to leave the EU, we now need to strengthen ties with countries around the world and show the UK is an outward-facing nation.”

A man has been found guilty of rape for the second time this year with Alicante Provincial Court sentencing him to 13 years and eight months behind bars after an incident at Arenales del Sol beach in May 2014. The man lured his victim by advertising work for husband and wife teams and lured them to Arenales for a job interview. After a walk on the beach, the guilty man told the couple the work would involve having sex

with him, and he pulled out a gun and threatened the husband, forcing the wife into committing indecent acts. The court ruled that the rapist must pay the couple 21 thousand euros in damages, after they refused to believe his defence that the couple had made the whole story up because he didn’t give them a job. The defendant was given a four-year jail sentence in January this year for attacking a woman in Alicante

after a promise of work, but he was acquitted last month of a similar accusation due to contradictions in the statement of the woman that had claimed to have been assaulted.

A Diabolical Duo Thank goodness I am not an American - forced to go to the polls to choose between a rock and a hard place next month! Surely the country, with all its resources could have come up with better candidates to lead the country and have his or her finger on the nuclear button. I wouldn't trust Hilary Clinton any further than I could throw

her and Donald Trump is a complete buffoon, likely to say or do something irrational at the drop of the hat. His stupid sexual bragging, caught on tape, demonstrates his total lack of basic common sense and shows he is incapable of engaging his brain before opening his mouth. I was nauseated at the hysterical and hypocriti-

cal outbursts coming from so many politicians in America over Trump's indiscretions, but I welcomed the more down-to-earth remarks from Nigel Farage, who said that Trump was no more guilty than so many other men who boast about sexual encounters when in the company of other men, and is something that women do too when

they oggle some "fit" man and remark how they would love to have his child - the remarks getting ever more lewd, the more drinks they get inside them. I recall going to the boring institutional dinners of the local Law Society and other "professional" bodies when I was a reporter and having to listen to some of the sexual

Stop The Speculators The pound has been falling to ridiculously low levels against all currencies over the last fortnight, including against the euro and dollar, and all for no justifiable reason whatsoever. It's caused by speculators betting against the pound and automatic trades programmed to recognise key words in speeches and news items like Brexit, turbulence, slide, fall, etc, to trigger sells. It happened in the Far East a week ago and within minutes, the pound had fallen by ten percent, recovering slightly when European trading resumed later. These damn speculators are now going to cost Britain dear in higher imports, and particularly fuel at the pumps. We expats in Spain are going to find our UK pensions will buy fewer euros so we will have to pull our belts in during the coming weeks. And it's all so unnecessary. Britain's economy is doing

very well - UK manufacturing is up, spending in the shops is healthy, and unemployment is continually falling, to levels southern Europe can only dream of. The euro, having to bolster low-economy countries in Eastern and Southern Europe is in a parlous state, and we are now seeing EU bureaucrats and European politicians trying to gloss

over euro woes and rubbish the British pound big time. Perhaps British politicians should play equally dirty and rubbish the euro, pointing out its weaknesses and stress that within weeks, it too will succumb to speculators' attacks. It worries me greatly that there are a few governments and individuals worldwide that hold so much currency (literally!) that if

boasting coming from the mouths of solicitors, architects, etc., after a few drinks, similar to the boasting drivel in the Trump recording. Anyway, here's a way out for Americans in their presidential election dilemma. All they have to do is to offer their regret at their independence 240 years ago and decide to become part of a pathway

for a better future by asking to return to be part of the United Kingdom. After all, the Queen and Theresa May are an infinitely better choice than Clinton or Trump could ever be. Once rejoined, the enlarged United Kingdom could sort out Brexit within minutes - just think how the pound, the dollar and shares would soar!

Investment Matters

they all acted in concert, they could destroy an individual country's economy. We saw a glimpse of it in the Far East last week but it could be far worse. It's a game to them - but it can inflict utter misery to millions of people just managing to keep their financial heads above water, so something needs to be done to stop their cruel games.

Seeing Haiti after last week's hurricane brought back memories to us of a similar-strength hurricane which devastated the southern part of the Dominican Republic in 1998, when the hotel in which we were staying was torn apart and the shanty town outside was ripped to pieces. 300 people died. A frightening experience, but made better thanks to the staff who also lived in the shanty town who looked after us for nine hours while the storm raged overhead. The next day, more than 100 Brit holidaymakers repaid that care to us, by dividing into work groups and first putting the hotel back into some kind of shape and then going into the town to give what help we could, watched by American holidaymakers who sat and complained and Germans who lifted not one finger and sneered at us Brits.

Looking at the pictures of Haiti and that of Barbados and the southern US, it was so clear the difference brickbuilt houses and a good infrastructure makes in saving lives and protecting property. This should not keep happening to the vulnerable people living in Third World countries. Isn't it time for each and every First World country to "adopt" a Third World one, not to allow immigrants in, but to provide the resources to get robust homes built, get a decent infrastructure, hospitals, schools and meaningful employment, so that for the first time these people have a quality of life? And the next time a hurricane strikes, we would not hear of hundreds dead and thousands rendered homeless in these countries, but like the US, just a handful of lives lost and people able to return to their intact homes within days.

Best Income for Expats by Keith Littlewood, International Financial Adviser Here is a brief resume of what is exactly available in the market place for investors and the rates you can expect to receive. Getting the best income possible from your investments is crucial in the current economic climate.

producers to be more aggressive in trying to produce competitive returns. Recent news on the issues with the likes of Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank could also see further pressures on pricing having a knock-on effect to this type of product.

Deposit Accounts – The AA offer web-based instant access offering 1.05%. This is only for the first year as 0.85% is in the form of a bonus at year-end so then reverts to 0.2%, so switching again then would be probably necessary. Nationwide Building Society are offering an ISA with 0.75%. Beware this is not fixed but a variable rate. You can apply online or via a branch and there are no tie-in periods so that you can move your money if the rate drops.

There are other investment vehicles such as annuities, share portfolios, unit-linked or unit trust funds, but then we are going up the risk ladder and usually a fully qualified financial adviser will be involved. Remember everything is ok in moderation and putting all your eggs in one basket can lead to trouble. In today’s financial climate it is essential you do everything you can to make sure your money is safe and secure and what you want to transpire in the future has the best chance of happening.

From November Santander are dropping the rate on the 123 account from 3% to 1.5% and it is only on balances of up to £20,000. The £5 monthly fee eats into that though, and there are other conditions to be met.

If you need advice or if have any questions regarding the above you can contact me, Keith Littlewood DipPFS, on 657 684 094 or email keith.littlewood@blacktowerfm.com.

In the current climate, deposit accounts should be used for emergency money only, as the rates offered often do not even match inflation. One way to combat inflation is to put money away for some sort of term.

The above information was correct at the time of preparation and does not constitute investment advice and you should seek advice from a professional adviser before embarking on any financial planning activity.

Spanish Compliant Bonds – Rates vary and depend on the size of investment. Prudential offer a Cautious Fund that is currently paying growth rates of 4.8% for investments in euros and 5.5% for investments in Sterling. This type of investment is great for people wanting medium to long-term income or growth. 5% of capital is allowed to be withdrawn each year penalty-free. These offer very good tax benefits but are only available if you are a Spanish fiscal resident.

Blacktower Financial Management (Int) Ltd is licensed in Gibraltar by the Financial Services Commission (FSC) and is registered with both the DGS and CNMV in Spain

UK Bonds – UK fiscal residents can apply online for a Vanquis 5-year Bond. This is a fixed rate of 2.01% and interest can be paid monthly or annually. This is good for providing certainty but could become bad value if interest or inflation rates increase. Structured Notes – Some investors may have exposed themselves to Structured Notes in order to attract an income – also known as a ‘Coupon’. This type of alternative investment, in my view, is of a higher risk nature and not always suitable to the ‘retail’ client. Occasionally they have built-in guarantees but also have conditions that can expose capital to a 50-60% loss. Market conditions recently have forced Structure Note

Big Vets Boost

Spanish MPs have voted to roll back a large increase in IVA on veterinary drugs and products after a debate in Congress last week, on the back of strong pressure from animal charities, activists and vets, who claim that more pets are abandoned or left to suffer as a result of the change four years ago. The Partido Popular, who introduced the changes in 2012, voted against the reverse, but they were in the minority in Congress. IVA on veterinary treatment and products used to be in the middle bracket, which was 8% compared with 4% for the lowest and 18% standard – until September 2012, when the standard level went up to 21% and the middle bracket to 10%. The cost of veterinary treatment for livestock remained in the middle level, although it went up

from 8% to 10%, but for all other animals including pets, it shifted to the higher band, meaning a jump from 8% to 21%. With historically cheap vet bills in Spain climbing, animal charities say the collateral effect has been four years of fewer dogs and cats spayed or neutered, more animals abandoned, fewer being given necessary vaccinations, and fewer illnesses treated. A survey was discussed in Congress which showed that in 2014, 730 veterinary clinics closed their doors due to the rise. Two MPs spearheading the campaign, Ester Capella and Joan Capdevila – the latter being a vet by profession himself – spoke of the 'dramatic increase' in animals being abandoned or neglected and the 'consequent ethical, social and humanitarian costs'.

Reading The Nose There’s a common misconception that a healthy dog has a cold, wet nose and a sick dog has a hot, dry nose. It’s not as simple as that, and the temperatures of dogs' noses fluctuate day to day, even hour to hour. It's hard to say exactly why (it could be the environment or it could be what they've been up to recently). But a dog can be perfectly healthy and have a warm, dry nose. A dog can be really sick (think heart disease or critically injured) and have a cold, moist nose. Having said all that, the nose can still yield some valuable information about what’s going on inside the dog’s body. For example, if the body is sufficiently hydrated, then it is more likely the nose will be adequately suffused with blood and will therefore seem moist. When the body is dehydrated, as occurs with diarrhoea, vomiting, reduced interest in or ability to consume water (as occurs with kidney/liver disease, cancer, etc.), then insufficient blood reaches the nose and both its moisture level and appearance

can change on a short or long-term basis. Elevated body temperature (hyperthermia) can cause the nose to feel warm to the touch. Conversely, decreased body temperature (hypothermia) can make the nose seem cool. It should appear uniform in size (the right side equalling the left), and be moist to mildly dry to the touch. Look for smooth and consistent airflow in and out of both nostrils (more noticeable with a closed mouth). It should lack textural and pigmentary changes, both on the surface and in the deeper tissues, and should exude only small amounts of clear discharge. Another thing that owners look at is a dog’s “runny” nose. A “running nose” indicates the presence of some form of nasal discharge. Whether it’s clear liquid, thick opaque mucus, or blood, all discharge from it can have mild to severe potential associations with underlying conditions. • Clear discharge: Often a normal occurrence in small quantities.

However, irritation from inhaled environmental allergies (smoke, perfume, air freshener, pollen, etc.) can irritate the nasal passages and lead to an increased volume of discharge.

and becomes imbedded there, or when a tumour grows and destroys normal tissues, there’s a higher likelihood that blood vessels will be eroded and major bleeding will occur.

• Thick opaque mucus: When irritation becomes more severe, or infectious organisms like bacteria grow in the nasal passages, the consistency and colour of the discharge becomes more opaque and thicker (respectively).

Pigmentary changes in the nose’s tissue can potentially indicate a deeper health issue, but this is not always the case. Changes in pigment can also be correlated with a dog’s breed, age, environmental exposure, etc. However, in general, any changes in pigmentation should be addressed with a vet. The texture and the development of scaling (skin flaking) or sores that don’t heal or are slow to heal, can certainly correlate with underlying health issues. Nasal hyperkeratosis is a disorder commonly seen in older dogs or certain breeds (e.g. cocker spaniel, Labrador retriever) where the nose takes on a dry, callus-like or cobblestone appearance due to excess production of keratin. It can be associated with a dog’s genes, dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca or KCS), or even blocked tear ducts.

• Blood: Also called epistaxis, blood emerging from the nose can result from mild to severe trauma to the tissue at the outermost part the nose (nasal planum), where it meets up with the outside environment; or deeper in the mucous membranes lining the nasal passages. A penetrating injury, blunt trauma or scrape to the surface can cause bleeding that will typically stop with gentle pressure and by calming the dog down (sometimes requiring sedation and pain medication). When a piece of foreign material enters the deeper nasal passages

Pink balloons literally went up over Zenia Boulevard on Sunday in a special annual baloon release organised by the cancer charity fundraisers, Maria and the Pink Ladies to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Day. A host of local entertainers gave their services free of charge as the day kicked off at noon, culminating in the release of balloons, with a card attached to each of them featuring a message to a loved one who may have lost their battle to cancer.

Money raised on the day also came from personal donations and a newly released CD recorded by local performers called Run for Life which has been adopted by the Pink Ladies as their new anthem. To date, the fundraisers have accumulated nearly 300 thousand euros for the AECC cancer charity, with the money used to buy machines for the early detection of cancer, as well as bringing down the cost of cancer testing.

High time I was put on a pedestal THEY'RE a funny lot down at the pub -- and by funny I mean weird. Take the youngest member of our hostelry group, Daft Barry. Now Barry can be awfully naive and gullible when it comes to living in the real world. Fortunately for him he tends to spend most of his time in OUR world and he is of the unshakeable opinion that his fellow pubsters are superior to him in the intelligence stakes. Indeed, Daft Barry has singled me out as the cleverest of us all. Heaven forbid that I appear to be getting above myself but our most junior member does happen to respect me to the extent that he has placed me on a pedestal. 'But how can you NOT be above yourself if you're

standing on a pedestal?' inquired Indoor Lou the other evening. 'It's just a manner of speech, Lou,' I responded. 'Obviously, if I were physically to be placed on top of a pedestal, I would be palpably above myself. 'But I happened to be speaking idiomatically. Or maybe I mean metaphorically or figuratively -- I never know the difference.' Daft Barry smiled knowingly. 'If Dave Silver says it is all three of those words he's just used, then it IS all three of those words. He knows what he's talking about.' Fearful Phil shook his head in disagreement. Maybe he was jealous of Daft Barry's hero worship of me. 'All I know,' Phil said, 'is that if Dave Silver were indeed on a pedestal, I

would be the first to knock him off it.' 'But don't forget to put a rope around his neck first,' suggested Ol' Red Eyes, the most ancient and grizzled member of our pub group, who as usual was stretched out on the carpet. 'What a terrible thing to say,' said our leader and mentor Andromeda Arkwright. 'You should wash out your mouth with soap and water.' 'What did I get wrong?' asked Ol' Red Eyes innocently. 'If intelligence is the criterion here, then I, a former schoolmaster, should be the one placed on that proverbial pedestal.' Blimey, I thought, the prehistoric prat couldn't even stand on the floor, never mind on top of a column. However, I decided to respond out loud to his

insulting remarks with what I hoped would be a dignified response. 'Shut yer cakehole!' I barked. Andromeda Arkwright slammed her hand on the bar. 'Order, please!' Dave the barman's ears instantly pricked up at the rare prospect of a round of drinks being purchased. Then his lugholes went flaccid again as he realised that our leader was merely calling for better behaviour from her charges. Andromeda shook her head in disgust at us pubsters. 'You chose me as your guide and mentor,' she said. 'But I will lead you only if you accept that our little public house is a microcosm of our democratic society. NOT AN ANARCHY!' 'Uh-oh. She walked straight into that one,' I whispered to Dave the barman

as Daft Barry as usual misunderstood and started to tie a knot in his hanky. 'It could have been worse,' Dave the barman whispered back. 'Daft Barry might have heard it as snot in a hanky.' Andromeda Arkwright hadn't yet finished lecturing her subjects. As we pubsters poked tongues out at each other whenever our leader looked away, she went on: 'I treasure the memory of my dear father who passed away in utter penury after donating all his savings to the founding of a home for the bewildered. I, too, want to help the less brain-laden among us, namely you lot.' Something Andromeda had just said tweaked my interest and I made my way to the pub exit, being careful to avoid stepping on the horizontal form of Ol' Red Eyes who was snoring heavily.

BY DAVE SILVER

'Where are you going, Dave Silver?' Daft Barry whispered. Aware that Daft Barry basked in the shadow of my pedestal, I whispered back: 'Nothing to concern yourself with, my friend. I don't wish to tax your mind too much. I shall return presently.' And with that I made a beeline for the spot on the pavement where my chainsmoking pub-banned colleague Fag Ash Bill was standing. 'Hey, Bill!' I greeted him as he puffed away. 'Have you got your pocket map of Britain with you?' 'Why? Are you lost?' asked a bemused Bill. 'Don't be silly,' I laughed. 'It's just that Andromeda Arkwright said her dad died in Utter Penury and I'm curious to know where exactly that place is.'

TRELI ON THE TELLY Sugar Sours The Egos

WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

It makes me shudder to think that the original version of The Apprentice aired on NBC in the States was presented by a certain businessman by the name of Donald Trump! I wonder what happened to him? Give me Lord Alan Sugar any time and the BBC 1 version, which is helped by the shrewd selection process of the producers, who always give us a crazy selection of candidates vying to get a quarter of a million pounds

for a start-up project. It's always impossible in the first few weeks to mark out a potential winner, so just enjoy the ride as based on the first two episodes, we have the usual collection of ego maniacs who cock everything up despite their brash predictions, and as always, give you the impression that they've never seen the programme before. Karren Brady is now fullon cutting and vicious, and frankly has to be, as the

errors come thick and fast, whilst Claude Littner is gently calm, but very astute in what he has to say. The highlight is of course the boardroom with Lord Sugar reigning supreme with a great collection of one-liners, as well as so far making the right calls in firing the right people. The unchanging format doesn't look tired, and it actually would be boring if everybody used their common sense and did every-

Meet The Parents

thing correctly! By the way, this might sound stupid in this digital recording age, but why doesn't the show feel right airing on a Thursday as opposed to the traditional Wednesday? The BBC's fantastic year for drama continued on Wednesday with series two of The Missing in that Appentice slot. Was it really two years ago that we were captivated by the first run with James Nesbitt losing it over his kidnapped boy? It's a tall order to follow that, but based on the opener, The Missing has done it, with a new setting in Germany and a fresh cast, but we do have that nice French detective Julien Baptiste (Tcheky Karyo) coming out of retirement to deal with a new mystery. Our couple this time are played by Keeley Hawes (what a year for her with Line of Duty and her sublime comedy turn in The Durrells) and David Morrissey (always spot on and never does rubbish). Hawes and Morrissey are outstanding and we have echoes of the French TV mystery series, The Returned, as their missing daughter, Alice, returns after

11 years. With a new story and cast every couple of years, this is a drama that could keep coming back to enthral us. A million years away from The Missing, is high gloss US drama trash of the highest order, in the shape of Nashville on Sky Living, in yet another show that Sky has poached from Channel Four. It's as daft as a brush, but it works great with some mainly likeable characters trying to do their best in the world of country music, and their personal lives making Katie Price seem quite normal. Four series in, the lunacy continues, yet to the shock of industry observers, ABC in the States cancelled it earlier this year, with the producers then hawking it around other channels. Series five (after a big cliffhanger) has found a home (somewhat appropriately) on CMT (Country Music Television), and long may it continue. We don't have too many dramas these days which offer a bit of amiable stupidity, though there is an updated version of Dynasty in the works for next year! Farewell for the time being

to ITV's Victoria, which is to be given the "Downton" treatment next year, with a 2017 Christmas Special to tag onto series two. It's a deserved honour for a show that did well to fill what looked like an unfillable Sunday night Downton-less void for ITV. Now let's see what the network's fourparter Tutankhamun does this weekend. I'll miss BBC 2's Mock The Week when it wraps up the current series tonight with a compilation show. In a scheduling rarity last Friday, it aired on the same day as the return of Have I Got News For You on BBC 1, and much as I'm loyal to Have I Got News For You, Mock The Week is a lot funnier, and deserves an upgrade to BBC 1, as well as a bigger order above the dozen or so shows that it gets a year, I really enjoyed National Treasure on Channel Four with Robbie Coltrane and Julie Walters which finished on Tuesday night. No spoilers here, but there was a very telling final scene with Coltrane which summed everything up beautifully.

Tipping Point: Lucky Stars

Saturday - ITV Ben Shephard is back with a new series of Tipping Point: Lucky Stars, the quiz show where three celebrities take on an extraordinary machine in the hope of winning £20,000 for charity.

Saturday - ITV Meet The Parents is a brand new dating series hosted by Holly Willoughby. She puts the romantic futures of a group of singletons into the hands of the people who know them best: their parents. In their quest to find love, nothing is off limits, as the picker looking for romance gets to ask their potential suitors’ parents anything. Mum and dad then get busy spilling the beans, on everything from their off-spring’s relationship history and grooming habits, to questionable celebrity crushes and cringe-worthy childhood stories. This week we have: Picker: Lewis Blissett from London. Families: Mum Sue and dad Jay with daughter Imani from Bedfordshire. Mum Helle with daughter Suzie from London. Mum Claire and dad Paul with daughter Hollie from Chichester.

Picker: Suzanne Haynes from Birmingham. Families: Mum Rebecca and dad Ron from Worcester with son Adam from London. Mum Catherine and sister Cath with son and brother Paddy from Lancashire. Mum Kerry and dad John with son Jack from Hertfordshire. While the parents are being quizzed, the guys and girls hoping to be chosen see and hear everything, and have no control over what their parents are revealing. However, if mum and dad go too far, they can make just one urgent phone call to speak to them. Will these parental confessions help or hinder their kids’ chances of finding love? Once the picker has finished grilling the parents, they make their decision. Though before they come face-to-face with their date, they get to meet the ones they turned down. Will they have made the right decision as they head straight from the studio to the date hopefully hand in hand?

This week comedian Jimmy Carr, boxing legend David Haye and Geordie Shore’s Charlotte Crosby will each need quick wits and nerves of steel if they're to capture the prize.

Tutankhamun

Tuesday - BBC One

Sunday - ITV Tutankhamun is based on the compelling story of Howard Carter and his discovery of the tomb of one of Ancient Egypt’s forgotten pharaohs, the boy-king Tutankhamun. Lord Carnarvon is the dashing eccentric who keeps faith with Carter and continues to back his expeditions when no one else will. In the first episode, broadcast on Sunday, it´s 1905, archaeology in Egypt is a rich man's game, the preserve of aristocrats and tycoons... except for the lone figure of Howard Carter. Carter is a genius and someone that even expert archaeologists turn to for advice. One of them is Maggie Lewis, a member of the New York Met Museum’s dig team. Maggie is fond of Carter and tries to get him to join her dig but Carter is determined to plough his own furrow. Maggie brings to Carter’s attention a faience cup and sets the archaeologist off on a trail of discoveries that points to something incredible. Carter becomes convinced that there is a royal tomb that’s forgotten by history and waiting to be discovered. He

Ordinary Lies

believes the tomb belongs to the boy king Tutankhamun, a little known Pharaoh whose legacy has been lost to the sands of time. Maggie dismisses Carter’s theories out of hand but he pursues it with single-minded determination. Only one man has enough faith in Carter’s brilliance to financially back him, Lord Carnarvon. He and Carter form the unlikeliest of partnerships: the dashing maverick aristocrat and the outcast genius, who had no formal training in archaeology. Together they join forces to unearth the greatest archaeological marvel the world has ever seen... Carnarvon’s teenage daughter Evelyn is swept away by the magic of the Valley of the Kings and she believes Carter’s theory of a lost tomb. An off-hand comment from Evelyn leads Carter to think that the tomb might be right under their noses, in the centre of the Valley of the Kings. But the outbreak of World War 1 means that Carter’s dream has to be put on hold – perhaps forever.

Based at the call centre and warehouse of sports sales company Coopers, the six-part drama introduces viewers to a fresh array of compelling characters, each with their own tangled web of torrid secrets and lies. The first episode tells the story of head of sales, Joe. Popular with his colleagues, Joe is the life and soul of the office and always the first to tell a joke. However, his cheery demeanour is knocked when he is sent home early from work after an injury to find wife Belinda acting strangely. Suspecting that she is having an affair, Joe makes the desperate decision to install hidden cameras around his house to keep an eye on her and their two children. The more he watches his family, though, the more addicted he becomes to monitoring their lives. His secret surveillance soon exposes his family’s clandestine lives, including his wife’s suspicious behaviour and his teenage son’s private life. But is the truth really what he wants, or will he realise that ignorance was bliss? Meanwhile, Coopers’ new recruit Ash catches the eye of recently divorced Ally. Despite Ash showing initial interest, Ally can’t help but feel as though Ash is hiding something. Will Ash let her in, or continue to keep her at arm’s length? Pictured: Toke (Joel Fry), Wendy (Rebekah Staton), Belinda (Jill Halfpenny), Joe (Con O'Neill), Ash (Luke Bailey), Ally (Jennifer Nicholas), Fletch (Matt Di Angelo), Holly (Kimberly Nixon), Patrick (Griff Rhys Jones), Jenna (Angela Griffin).

Pot-roasted chicken - Serves 4 In Denmark, chicken like this is often served with boiled potatoes, brown gravy and quick-pickled cucumber. INGREDIENTS

METHOD

1 chicken, liver, heart and gizzard reserved. Salt and white pepper. Butter, for browning. Cooking oil 2 Carrots, cut into medium-sized pieces. 8 Small shallots. 6–12 Button mushrooms, whole, halved or quartered, according to their size and your preference. 2 Cloves of garlic, crushed with the side of a knife. 1 Bay leaf. 2 Sprigs of thyme. 200ml White wine.

Season the chicken well with salt and pepper, both inside and out. Melt some butter with a little oil in a heavy castiron pot or ovenproof dish, over a mediumhigh heat, and brown the bird all over. Take the pot off the heat and sit the bird breastside up. Add the liver, heart, gizzard, vegetables, garlic and herbs, then pour in the wine. Cover with a lid and bring to a simmer over a low heat. (Or place in an oven preheated to

150C/gas mark 2). Cook the bird for 30-40 minutes, which will leave it just-cooked and juicy, or longer if you like it more well done. When the chicken is ready, strain off the cooking liquid and you can use that to make gravy or a cream sauce, according to your preference. Carve the chicken and arrange on a serving platter with the vegetables from the pot. Serve the sauce in a sauce boat on the side.

Pumpkin & bacon soup

The soft, sweet flesh of the Crown Prince pumpkin is perfect for this silky soup Ingredients 1 tbsp Vegetable oil. 50g Butter. 1 Onion, finely chopped. 150g Maple-cured bacon, cut into small pieces. ½ Crown Prince pumpkin or onion squash, peeled, deseeded and cut into medium chunks (you need about 500g pumpkin flesh). 1l Chicken stock. 100ml Double cream. 3 tbsp Pumpkin seeds, toasted. Maple syrup, for drizzling Method In a large, heavy-bottomed pan, heat the oil with 25g butter. Add the onion and a pinch of salt and cook on a low heat for 10 mins or until soft. Add

60g bacon and cook for a further 5 mins until the bacon releases its fat. Then increase the heat to medium, add the pumpkin and stock and season. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer, cover with a lid and cook for about 40 mins until the pumpkin is soft. Pour in the cream, bring

to the boil again and remove from the heat. Set aside some of the liquid, then blend the remaining pumpkin until smooth and velvety, adding liquid back into the pan bit by bit as you go (add more liquid if you like it thinner). Strain through a fine sieve, check the seasoning and set aside.

Melt the remaining butter in a pan over a high heat and fry the rest of the bacon with black pepper for 5 mins. Divide the bacon between four bowls, reheat the soup and pour over. To serve, sprinkle over the pumpkin seeds, drizzle with maple syrup, and enjoy.

Spanish fish stew with almond crumb

Merlot-poached pears with vanilla & cinnamon Ingredients 750ml bottle Merlot or other red wine, 200g golden caster sugar, 2 cinnamon sticks snapped in half, 1 vanilla pod halved lengthways then halved across to make 4 strips, 4 firm pears, peeled Method

Tip the wine, sugar, cinnamon and vanilla into a deep medium pan and heat gently until the sugar dissolves. Add the pears, making sure they are fully covered by the wine, then simmer for 30 mins until they are just tender. If the pears are very ripe, they may be ready in 20 mins. Can be made up to 2 days ahead – leave the pears in the syrup in the fridge until you’re ready to finish the recipe. Remove the pears from the pan with a slotted spoon and boil the syrup for 30 mins to reduce it and make it more syrupy. Cool, then chill for up to 2 days. Remove from the fridge 1 hr before serving.

100g blanched almonds 1 tsp sweet smoked paprika 1 tsp sea salt METHOD Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Heat a large casserole dish over a high heat and add the olive oil. Turn the heat down to medium before adding the onions, fennel, sliced garlic, fennel seeds, chilli and saffron. Season generously with salt and black pepper. Sweat the vegetables in the olive oil for 10 minutes before adding the chopped garlic and cooking for another five minutes. Add the tomatoes, breaking them up with a wooden spoon, then pour in the

water or stock and the new potatoes. Check for seasoning. Simmer the stew for about 20-25 minutes, or until the potatoes offer up no resistance when you push a sharp knife through: they should be completely cooked. In the meantime, put the almonds on a baking tray and pop in the oven for five to 10 minutes until a pale golden colour. Roughly chop with a large chopping knife to make fairly coarse breadcrumbs and stir in the paprika and salt. Add the fish to the stew once the potatoes are cooked and simmer for a further five minutes until the fish turns opaque. Spoon into hot bowls.

Could cinnamon hold the key to healthy digestion? Adding just a sprinkle of cinnamon to your diet could be beneficial to your health

A sprinkle of cinnamon will not just add flavour to your diet - the spice cools the stomach down making it healthier, new research showed. The exotic spice is known to have anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and has been used in Chinese medicine to treat colds, indigestion and cramps. Now Australian researchers found cinnamon lowers stomach temperature, which aids digestion, by up to two degrees. This in turn avoids damage to the stomach's lining, reducing inflammation and

many diseases of the gut. This property may also explain why the rustcoloured spice from a tree bark is so popular in hot countries. Study researcher Dr Jian Zhen Ou from RMIT University's School of Engineering in Melbourne said: 'Altogether cinnamon cooled the stomach by up to 2 degrees Celsius. 'No wonder cinnamon is so popular in warm regions as taking it makes people feel better and gives them a feeling of cooling down.' The research published in Scientific Reports was carried out on pigs as part of a bigger study at RMIT into gut health using swallowable gas sensor capsules or smart pills. Stomach gases from fermentation are linked to a number of gastrointestinal disorders such as ulcer, tumour-related illnesses, inflammable bowel diseases and irritable bowel syndromes. This aids digestion and prevents damage to the stomach's lining, reducing inflammation and many diseases of the gut. Yet gastroenterologists are still unable to differentiate between some of the most ordinary disorders of the gut and consequently patients are misdiagnosed.

The gas sensor capsule was developed to address this. Professor Kourosh Kalantar-zadeh said: 'The gases of the gut are the byproduct of the fermentation processes during digestion, affected by the gut state and can consequently provide the needed information regarding the health of the gut.' He added results seemed to show that cinnamon maintained the integrity of the stomach wall. He said: 'When pigs feed at room temperature, carbon dioxide (CO2) gas increases in their stomach. 'Cinnamon in their food reduces this gas by decreasing the secretion of gastric acid and pepsin from the stomach walls, which in turn cools the pigs' stomachs during digestion. 'When the pigs are hot, they hyperventilate, which reduces CO2 production. With cinnamon treatment, CO2 decreases even further. 'This not only cools the pigs but leads to a significant improvement in their overall health.' He explained the heatstress effects on the gut physiological abnormalities were well-known as 'the shunting of blood from the central circulation to the

periphery reduces the perfusion to the viscera, particularly the gastrointestinal tract, which may result in tissue hypoxia and intestinal mucosal injury. 'Damage to the integrity of the intestinal wall has been linked to a reduction in permeability and associated with gut inflammation and endotoxemia, which can significantly alter nutrient digestive and absorptive functionalities and hence the intestinal gas profile. 'On the other hand, supplemental cinnamon (cinnamomum verum) is chosen as a representative therapeutic agent due to its anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and free radical scavenging properties in the gastrointestinal tract. 'These advantageous characterises make this spice an ideal candidate for maintaining normal digestive functionalities and intestinal barrier integrity under the heat-stress condition, while at the same time it has relatively minor adverse-effects that cause minimum disturbance on the intestinal microbial community.'

Squeamish Halloween squares. These will be a big hit at Halloween – sticky, crunchy and chewy in one bite Ingredients 150g dark chocolate, broken into pieces (70% cocoa solids is good) 100g unsalted butter 4 tbsp golden syrup 100g Rice Krispies cereal 50g dried blueberry 50g dried cranberry 100g mini marshmallow 50g white chocolate, broken into pieces jelly snakes and bugs, to decorate Method Line a 20cm square tin with baking parchment or cling film. Stir in the melted

chocolate mixture until everything is well-coated. Spoon the mixture into the tin and spread out evenly. Chill in the fridge for an hour until set (or make the day before and chill overnight). Remove from tin and peel away paper or cling film. Using a sharp knife, cut into 16 squares or 32 bite-size pieces. Melt the white chocolate in a small bowl over a pan of barely-simmering water, or in the microwave on high for 1 min, stirring half way. Using a teaspoon, drizzle the white chocolate over the squares. Scatter with the jelly sweets, then allow to set before piling onto a serving plate. Keep in an airtight container for up to 2 days.

Why the Body Mass Index (BMI) is wrong: FREE Body Composition Analysis at MedB Clinic Body Mass Index or BMI is a calculation based only on a person’s height or weight. It does not take into consideration other important factors that determine a person's weight such as fat, muscle and water content of the body. BMI also doesn't take into account a person's age or sex, factors that play a significant role in determining the weight and the shape of the body. BMI is said to be normal between 18.5 and 25, and above 25 a person is supposed to be overweight, and a BMI above 30 indicates obesity. A New Way to Look at Body Weight: Why the Body Mass Index (BMI) is wrong. There are health risks associated with weight gain and obesity including heart disease, diabetes, and sleep apnea. However, recent clinical studies show that many people with BMI's showing overweight or obesity, are very healthy and have very low risks of developing heart disease and other metabolic diseases such as diabetes. A team of scientists from the University of Virginia found that people with a BMI of under 23 were twice more likely to die 30 days after surgery than those with BMI of over 35. BMI exaggerates thinness in short people and fatness in tall people according to Prof. Nick Trefethen of the

Mathematical Institute Oxford University. According to the Professor, the formula for calculating BMI which divides the height squared by the weight calculates a lower BMI for shorter people and a higher BMI for taller

people. In other words, shorter people will think they are thinner than they are, and tall people will believe they are fatter than they are. According to Trefethen, the BMI equation came into being a long time ago, before calculators or even computers, and there was the need to keep the formula simple. Today, with advanced technology, it is no longer acceptable to monitor nutritional status and weight with a mathematical equation such as the BMI. Using an eight sensor bio impedance technology, the Body Composition Analyzer at MedB Clinic can calculate several critical parameters that are vital for maintaining a healthy weight and nutritional status. In minutes, the scan determines a person's exact height, weight as well as percentage body fat, muscle, water and salt. In addition, the scan will check the Waist-Hip ratio and the number of calories required to maintain a healthy weight. From now, until the end of October, you can have a FREE Body Composition Scan at MedB Clinic, Punta Prima on Fridays, 10 am - 4 pm. Call MedB Clinic to make an appointment - 966189074. RESTORATION OF THE PEACE ROOM AT THE PALACE OF VERSAILLES

Groupe Renault is working with the Palace of Versailles for the first time ever to help fund the restoration of the palace’s Peace Room. This considerable task, set to begin in 2017 and run for 18 months, forms part of a wider renovation programme that has been underway in Versailles for several years.

Festival for the past 33 years as well as the Deauville American Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival. In teaming up for the restoration of the Peace Room, Groupe Renault and the Palace of Versailles are reinforcing a partnership that dates back to 2013.

Putting the shine back on the Peace Room will help return the Grand Apartments to their former glory, restoring all the splendour, architectural coherence and legibility of the Palace of Versailles.

For the last three years, Groupe Renault has provided 23 electric vehicles (10 Twizys, 10 Kangoo ZEs, 3 ZOEs) for daily use by staff at the Palace, Museum and Estate of Versailles (security officers, garden maintenance, administrative departments, etc.). A network of 30 charging points has now also been introduced across the grounds of Versailles. This unique partnership contributes to environmental preservation in the gardens, as well as the comfort and safety of 12 million visitors every year. In addition, the Renault-Nissan Alliance is sponsoring ‘Marie-Antoinette, a Queen in Versailles’, an exhibition to be staged by the Palace of Versailles at the Mori Arts Center Gallery in Tokyo from 25 October 2016 to 26 February 2017.

The Peace Room is located at the end of the Hall of Mirrors next to Queen MarieAntoinette’s apartments, and offers a magnificent outlook over the Gardens of Versailles. Its interior design celebrates the excellence of French 18th-century decorative arts and exemplifies the worldwide influence of France – values that chime with Groupe Renault’s long-time involvement in the arts and symbolise France’s heritage at its best. Peace Room epitomises the radiant majesty of Versailles. It embodies all the talent of the craftsmen who built this palace. All French arts and decorative trades are united here: it is history made manifest. This salon has stood through the ages as a tribute to peace, and remains an allegory of France’s influence in the world. Restoring it to its former magnificence required a particular kind of commitment and a deep-seated recognition of the universality of this symbolic place. Groupe Renault has a worldwide presence and is now enabling this piece of history to live on.’ Catherine Pégard, President of the Palace, Museum and Estate of Versailles ‘As a long-standing patron of the arts, primarily through our involvement in international film festivals and our art collection, Groupe Renault is delighted to be supporting the Palace of Versailles in such a momentous architectural feat as the restoration of the Peace Room. France is lucky to possess, in the Palace of Versailles, such an exceptional national treasure that contributes to our country’s identity abroad. At Groupe Renault we stay true to our French roots, and today we are proud to back this emblematic project.’ Groupe Renault Chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn Groupe Renault has forged links with the art world throughout its history and holds more than 300 works in its Renault Modern Art Collection. Mostly acquired from 1967 to 1985, the pieces – by painters, sculptors and visual artists including Dubuffet, Tinguely and Vasarely – can be seen at various company premises. Groupe Renault has also supported filmmaking for many years, partnering the Cannes

The Peace Room Designed to form a coherent whole with the Hall of Mirrors and the War room (its counterpart on the north side), the Peace Room was the fruit of a collaboration between Louis XIV’s chief architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart and Charles Le Brun, First Painter to the King. The room was designed between 1681 and 1686 and is characterised by its superb polychrome marble, including Sarrancolin marble, green Campan, Campan Grand Mélange, Rance and white Carrara marble. Marble panelling lines the walls for the entire height of the room, and further visual riches are provided by reliefs sculpted in gilded lead or bronze, interspersed with mirrors. Crowning it all is a ceiling painted by Le Brun. This interior, designed to celebrate peace, completes the iconography displayed in the Hall of Mirrors commemorating civilian and military actions by the Sun King that led to peace and prosperity in his kingdom. The Peace Room has largely retained its original architectural design. The room is now in need of restoration due to the dilapidated state of its marble and paintings. The painted surfaces are lifting away and what is more, they were profoundly altered in a previous restoration phase carried out in the 1950s that left Charles Le Brun’s paintings unrecognisable. The work planned has two facets: firstly, restoring the paintings comprehensively to shed new light on the First Painter to the King’s artworks, and secondly, reinstating the architectural decorations to create a worthy setting. This monumental project is to begin in 2017, lasting 18 months, and will be project managed by France’s chief architect for Historical Monuments, Frédéric Didier. Once completed, the restoration of the Peace Room will return the Grand Apartments to their former glory, restoring all the splendour, architectural coherence and legibility of the Palace of Versailles.

FORD GT TO MAKE JAPANESE DEBUT

The Ford GT will make its first ever appearance in Japan this weekend when the two Ford Chip Ganassi Racing GTs compete in Round Seven of the FIA World Endurance Championship at Fuji Speedway. The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship concluded recently with the #67 Ford GT taking the runner up spot in the driver’s and teams’ championship and Ford taking second place in the battle of the manufacturers. With just three more WEC rounds remaining it is vital to score points at each round of the championship in order to finish the Ford GT’s first season in the WEC on a strong note. “It was great to see the IMSA Ford Chip Ganassi Racing team fight until the end at Petit Le Mans,” said Dave Pericak, Ford Performance global director. “The second place finish is a fantastic way to end our debut season with the Ford GT in North America. We have three races left for the Ford GT in 2016 and we are going to give it everything we’ve got in Japan, China and Bahrain to finish off the WEC season.” The #66 Ford GT will be raced at the ‘6 Hours of Fuji’

by its regular crew of Germany’s Stefan Mücke and Frenchman Olivier Pla. Currently in sixth place in the driver’s championship, the duo will be on the hunt for the points they need to pull them up the order. “I'm really looking forward to Fuji and to Japan,” Mücke said. “It is a very interesting track and I really enjoy the culture of the country. Fuji is a challenging circuit as you have a very long straight, a high-speed middle section and a technical last section. Finding the right set up and compromise is one of the main targets during the practice sessions but I'm pretty sure the corners will suit our car. I can't wait to get out there and fight for a podium result.” In the #67 Ford GT, Britons Andy Priaulx and Harry Tincknell are also

looking for a good finish to move them up from ninth place in the driver’s championship standings. “This will be my first time at Fuji but I’ve done my homework on the simulator,” Tincknell said. “The first two sectors are quite high speed so that should really suit the Ford GT. It looks like a really flowing track and that should play to our strengths. I'm setting a personal target of three podiums in the last three races and obviously that starts at Fuji. We're going for the win absolutely but we need that consistency of three strong results to finish the season.” The 6 Hours of Fuji takes place at 11:00 local time (04:00 CET) on Sunday, with a 20-minute qualifying session getting underway at 14:00 local time (07:00 CET) on Saturday.

CALL FOR LOWER ALCOHOL LIMIT

Brake, the road safety charity, has joined a wide range of other groups calling for MPs to reduce the UK’s high drink driving limit. There is also strong public support for lowering the limit, with the British Social Attitude Survey recently finding that three quarters of the public (77%) support lowering the drink driving limit. The Government states that drink driving ‘remains a priority’, but there has been no reduction in the number of drink driving deaths since 2010. Every year drink driving causes 240 deaths and more than 8,000 casualties in the UK. This costs £800 million a year. 60% of those who are killed or injured are people other than the driver, such as passengers, pedestrians and cyclists. In England and Wales the drink-drive limit is set at 80mg alcohol/100ml blood and has been since 1965. England and Wales have one of the highest drink drive limits in the world. Set 80mg alcohol per 100ml blood, it is greater than the rest of Europe (with the exception only of Malta), as well as Commonwealth countries such as Australia, New Zealand and South

Africa. Lowering our drink drive limit to 50mg alcohol/100ml blood would reduce drink driving deaths by at least 10%. The Government of Malta recently announced plans to lower the drink drive limit to 50mg this month in a new National Alcohol Policy to reduce harm.(1) Scotland lowered its limit to 50mg in December 2014, and police figures showed a 12.5% decrease in drinkdrive offences in the first nine months.(2) Northern Ireland is set to lower its drink driving limit before the end of 2016. A two-minute animation has been produced by the Institute of Alcohol Studies to support this campaign, outlining the key arguments: http://www.ias.org.uk/lowerlimit Gary Rae, Brake’s director of communications and campaigns, said: “Drink driving remains one of the biggest causes of devastating road crashes; often young and inexperienced

drivers and passengers are involved and frequently they are the tragic victims. We must continue to send a clear message to all drivers that drinking and driving is a lethal cocktail. It's shocking to see how many crashes, many involving deaths and serious injuries, have involved men in their 20s. This call to action today is a useful stepping stone to a time when there is a zero alcohol limit.” Katherine Brown, Director at the Institute of Alcohol Studies, said: “Recent decades have seen great improvements in road safety, but progress on drink driving has ground to a halt. With hundreds of lives lost each year, we can’t afford to let England and Wales fall behind our neighbours in road safety standards. “It’s time the Government looked at the evidence and what other countries are doing to save lives and make roads safer. We need to make drink driving a thing of the past, and to do this we need a lower drink drive limit.

ADVICE: Malcolm wanted to know how to get his Microsoft Word documents working again.

ADVICE: Ray was having problems opening bank statements in .pdf format

Q

Hi Richard, I recently tried to open a Microsoft Word document using ‘Paint’ with Windows 7, as a result all my Word documents are now labelled ‘DocX’. What can I do to rectify this? Thank you.

A

Hi Malcolm, I suspect that you have set “Microsoft Paint” to be the default application to open up .docx files (incidentally your Microsoft Word files would have always been .docx, it’s not the action of opening them up in Microsoft Paint that did that). Anyway, to set them back to Microsoft Word, you need to click Start > Default Programs > Set Default Programs and then scroll down the list of programs until you find Microsoft Word and then click on the “set this program as default” and you should have your problem sorted out.

Q

Good Afternoon Richard. I have just experienced a problem not had before that is when going into my bank account online and clicking a statement to print, it says that I need Adobe Reader as it is a PDF file, I have this reader ok and can read PDF files that I have saved previously. The browser is IE 9, and does not work on Google Chrome. I spoke to the bank and they recommended FIREFOX. This I have downloaded and works fine on the bank PDF files, I also engaged the Norton safe search, do not know anything about this browser, in your opinion is it ok or dodgy. Regards Ray

A

Hi Ray, it sounds perfectly reasonable to me. It sounds like Internet Explorer has a problem opening up web based .pdf files that a reset may well resolve and I have experienced the same problem with Google Chrome as it uses its own .pdf reader that doesn’t play well with some of the bank websites. So by downloading and installing Firefox you have essentially side-stepped the problem, well done.

A Quick Dip The Only Way Is Essex

Sandy Bounce

This Sunday, Benidorm will host the final race as well as the Grand Final of Oceanman’s 2016 World Championship of Open Water Swimming. Benidorm’s waters will decide both the male and female winners of the 2016 world circuit in Oceanman and Half Oceanman distances. All par-

ticipants who qualified in at least 10th place in any one of the qualifying races of the circuit during this season can compete for the titles, which means a number of local British swimmers will be taking part. All participants will compete under the same conditions, with a world title at stake! There’ll be a full report in next week’s Courier.

Better Contact

78 doubles teams converged on La Glea beach in Campoamor for last weekend's National Beach Tennis championships. Six sandy courts were used for the tournament with six different categories competed for. The

Presidents of the National and Valencian tenis federations attended the action on Saturday and Sunday, with Orihuela council saying that they are already in negotiations to host next year's event.

Seconds Out

Volvo Ocean Race sailors will be able to send social media updates direct from the oceans for the first time in next year's 2017-18 contest, following a rule change and technical development that opens up a race that has always prevented onboard internet access. Previously, the bi-annual Volvo Ocean Race (which you will have to wait for as it starts from Alicante in a year's time) has strictly prohibited onboard internet access in order to ensure sporting equality and rule out

any potential outside assistance from shore. But, using a new bespoke platform currently being developed in-house, the Race will provide sailors with a ‘crew communicator’ that will allow them to transmit one-way updates on either their own, or their team’s, social channels. “This is exciting news for fans of the race, who can look forward to more direct and raw multimedia content from the boats than ever before,” said Race CEO, Mark Turner.

Lewis Limps Out 120 amateur boxers and officials from around the world gloved up last weekend in San Pedro del Pinatar for the international Pinatar Boxing Club Championships held at the Príncipe de Asturias pavilion. Clubs and national teams from Spain, as well as Germany, Sweden, Wales, France, Monaco, the Netherlands, Italy and Morocco took part in the tournament. San Pedro's mayor,

Visitación Martínez and Sports Councillor, Daniel Perez, were presented with replica Spanish team shirts on Monday, as worn by the country's boxers at the Rio Olympics. In attendance was the national coach, Rafael Lozano; the Murcia Boxing Federation president, Felipe Martinez; Spanish Boxing Federation secretary, Jose Maria Prieto; and Spanish Olympic boxer Sissoko.

Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton pulled out of a tyre test in Barcelona on Wednesday to rest a sore foot ahead of next week's U.S. Grand Prix in Austin, Texas.

Hamilton had been due originally to test the 2017 Pirelli tyres with a modified 2015 'mule' car but team mate and championship leader Nico Rosberg took on those duties instead.

TORREVIEJA 200 all out RAINHAM 241 for 9 Rainham won by 41 runs Essex club side Rainham had a comfortable win in their first ever match in Spain, when they beat Torrevieja in a 40 over encounter, which was almost certainly Torry’s final match of the season. Batting first, Rainham scored freely until in the 17th over, with 86 runs on the board, Abdul was trapped LBW for 21 by Connor Wood. Biren continued to bat freely but was eventually caught by Alfie Court again off the bowling of Connor. Biren had scored 51. Anish (24) Umer (30) Harry (21) and Jas (34 not out) all contributed runs to put up a good total. Torry’s bowling again relied on the juniors with the start being 13year- old Alfie Court with a return of 4 for 54 off his 7 overs. Torrevieja had a dreadful start to their reply as they lost their first wicket with

the first ball of their innings. Parwitta Singh was next to go for 8, then Kailesh Singh for a quick fire 28. Captain Chris Darwen came to the crease and when he was joined by Ciaran Guichard, they steadied the ship and gradually began to bring Torry back into the game. Indeed after 30 overs, they were up with the required run rate to win but Anish then removed both Darwen and Guichard (who both made 42 ) in quick succession and the match took a decisive turn. Only the evergreen Neville Harris with 15 offered any further resistance and Torrevieja dismissed for 200. Nick Thwaites, the organiser for Rainham, thanked Torrevieja CC for such an enjoyable game and also offered his thanks to Javier Lopez Romero from Torrevieja Council who had been a great help in organising a hotel for them and recommending some fine restaurants and bars. Nick added that they were looking forward to coming again next year.

Dolores Race

Around 500 athletes took part in the seventh staging of the seven kilometre Dolores road race on Sunday afternoon, which started and finished in the Plaza General Llopis. Local athlete Marina

Grau was the fastest female in just under 25 minutes whilst the quickest male competitor was Francisco Serrano who completed the course in 21 minutes and 25 seconds.

Ivie Davies on Golf

Will Tiger Ever Return? Golfers past and present have been quick to voice their opinions after the announcement this week that the great Tiger Woods has put his comeback on hold for the time being. Over a space of three days Woods committed to the latest PGA event, The Safeway Open, and then on Monday he pulled out, with his agent saying that “his game just wasn’t there”. Woods has had three back operations in the space of 19 months and the former world No1 has not played competitively since August last year. Woods' agent, Mark Steinberg, explained to Golf Digest why his client committed to the event last Friday but pulled out by Monday. "He played a lot of holes of golf, and the game just wasn't there," said Steinberg. “He didn't quite get all the holes in prior to the Friday decision, but he really wanted to play this weekend. You have to commit the

Friday before. He flew Joey [Woods' caddie, Joe LaCava] down to Florida. He flew him out to California with him. They were going through their prep for a tournament. Going through the weekend, playing as much golf as he did, it just wasn't to the standard he wants it to be." On the face of it that does all seem fair enough and Woods made these comments himself on his own website: - “After a lot of hours, I knew I wasn't ready to compete against the best golfers in the world. I will continue to work hard, and plan to play at my foundation's event, the Hero World Challenge, in Albany in early December” “I would like to apologise and send my regrets to Safeway, the Turkish Airlines Open, the fans in California and Turkey and those that had hoped to watch me compete on TV. This isn't what I wanted to happen,

KNOW YOUR RULES QUESTION

but I will continue to strive to be able to play tournament golf. I'm close, and I won't stop until I get there.” That’s what the great man has had to say, but here we go with a few theories to add into the mix. Luke Donald believes that “mental anguish” could be behind Tiger’s reason to delay his comeback. Donald, who had a career-threatening wrist injury in 2008, said: “It sounds like clinically he feels fine. He’s just not quite ready to tee it up from a mental standpoint perhaps. That’s certainly what I gathered from his comments. There’s a lot of mental anguish when you take time away. I think obviously Tiger’s got very high standards and expectations.” “I think that you have to weigh that up with that feel of almost failure or fear or anxiety of not performing well. If Woods is healthy like he says he is, that’s probably what he’s weighing out right

now, just feeling comfortable. It’s really hard to get comfortable unless you actually put yourself through it. At some point he’s got to jump in, and if he messes up, he’s got a good opportunity to get better the next time he plays.” England’s Chris Wood saw Woods during the Ryder Cup when the 40year-old was one of Davis Love’s vice-captains and hopes this latest setback does not mark the end of Woods’s career. “He seemed fine at the Ryder Cup, but you never know with Tiger,” Wood said. “It’s really disappointing because I was ready to watch it and it would have been great for the European Tour for him to play in Turkey in his second event back. “It is really disappointing for myself as a golf fan to not be able to sit down and watch him play, because he was my golfing hero. He won the Masters when I was 10

years old, so from that point on he’s the only guy I’ve ever looked up to really. And he doesn’t deserve for his career to come to a finish in this way. He deserves to go out in all the style that his records still deserve.” Six-time major champion, Sir Nick Faldo, says that "everything is stacking up against" Tiger Woods in his attempt to return to golf following injury. "It's going to be a hard grind to come back and compete against the best in the world," said Faldo, 59, who wasn’t surprised when Woods withdrew from Safeway event this week. "Golf is a wicked game, it dangles a carrot”, commented Faldo. "Ten years ago, I'd hit balls and think, 'I can still play, I can still hit it'. Then you'd go to the course and can't make a score. Everything is stacking up against him now. Physically, mentally and obviously compet-

ing." “Watching him walk, he just doesn't look supple to me. I know the stamina needed to play 72 holes. He may be able to hit balls on a range, but there's a rhythm to that. On a course, you get a five-minute gap between two shots. I think maybe he is starting to hit the ball better, but it's the stamina to play." Despite optimism in some quarters and golf fans wanting to see Tiger in top flight action again, and remember the box office draw that he still is, I suspect that Faldo’s assessment is correct. Tiger may be a spring chicken at 40 years of age but he has many hurdles still to climb, and most fans would rather see him retire as opposed to seeing a third-rate Woods struggling to make the halfway cut week in and week out. I hope he proves everybody wrong, and what a story that would be!

Despairing Times

Thader On Form

CD TORREVIEJA 0 CD CASTELLON 3 With one point from eight games, Torrevieja really do cut a miserable figure at the bottom of the table. Unsurprisingly, no side has conceded more goals and no team has scored fewer than them so far this term, and it was more of the same against Castellon at the Nelson Mandela stadium on Sunday. Castellon hit the wood-

work twice, made Buba pull off a couple of great saves and netted three times. Torry's only on-target effort was a speculative punt from fully 45 yards, which was readily gathered in. A fairly innocuous cross from the left on 43 minutes seemed to baffle Buba and his timid defence, allowing Lolo to nod the ball home from outside the far post. It

was a poor goal to concede, especially so close to the interval. Just after the hour mark Juanmi handled the ball in the box when on defensive duties and the visitors doubled their advantage through a Juanfran penalty. A third was added five minutes before the end with a simple tap in from Alexis after straightforward work down the right flank.

Pastor was unable to feature in this contest as his registration paperwork had not come through from Australia, and will make a difference when he gets the chance. He will need considerably more from his team mates if Torry are to start picking up points as the club has hit dire straits on and off the field, and they go to Bunol this Wednesday evening.

Hat-Trick Defeat

CF BORRIOL 4 CD ALMORADI 1 Borriol handed Almoradi a comprehensive defeat as they got their first home win of the season, helped by a Jaume Almela hat-trick, with two of the goals coming in just the first seven minutes.

Almela took advantage of a loose ball on the edge of the Almoradi penalty area to score in the third minute, and doubled the lead just four minutes later. The visitors were seriously rocked

by the early goals and they barely troubled the home keeper Oscar Gea in the first half. Almoradi boss Fran Rodríguez put on Pablo and Mario straight at the start of the second half to try to get his team back into the contest, but Almela duly got his hat-trick on the hour mark. Obele though offered some faint Almoradi hope of rescuing getting a point when he pulled a goal back from the penalty spot, with 21 minutes remaining. Almoradi then clicked up a gear and there could have been an interesting finish if Saul had taken advantage of convert-

Monte’s Return

Local favourites CD Montesinos are back in league action this weekend with their new manager, Carlos Perez, and assistant Angel Ivan in charge (both pictured on the far left), as

Monte entertain CF Racing de Playas Orihuela with a 5.00 pm kick-off. As reported last week, the former CF Torrevieja boss was drafted in, after the club sacked Camacho after two games in

charge. Perez ordered a quickly arranged friendly against town rivals CD Montesinos last Sunday to fill a fixture gap, with CD handing out a six-one thrashing.

ing a dangerous cross which went into the Borriol box. As it was, Juan Carlos scored on the counter-attack for Borriol in the 82nd minute to wrap up the points.

CD THADER 2 ELDA INDUSTRIAL 0 This was a far more comfortable win for the Rojales side then the scoreline suggests, with the only surprise being that they didn't score more goals until very late on, as their fans feared some kind of sucker punch from the visitors. The clash was just 35 seconds old when Valentin opened the scoring with Thader running the whole of the first half show, but they just couldn't convert their superiority into more goals.

The second half saw the Rojales side continue to dominate, but it was only when José Manuel got their second, thanks to good work from Dani Lucas in the 86th minute, that the Thader supporters could begin to relax. Thader are now fourth in the Preferente Group Four, six points off the top, and are at home to UD Ilicitana this Sunday with an 11.30 am kick-off, with the fixture originally scheduled to be played away.

Two Points Lost

ELCHE 0 ALCORCON 1

ELCHE 4 GIMNASTIC 4

Elche threw away a threeone lead against the Segunda division's bottom club on Saturday, and then had to fight back to grab a point. The Tarragona side scored three times in the space of nine second-half minutes in a draw that left neither side happy, and Elche coach Alberto Toril fuming about his team’s loss of concentration midway during the second half. A shot inside the post from Alex Lopez put the visitors ahead in the 11th minute to stun the home supporters, but then two goals (in the 14th and 18th minutes) from

Same Old Story

the experienced Nino put the Ilicitanos in front. When Matilla struck an excellent long range free kick to make it three for Elche just after the hour mark, it was all going to plan until referee González Fuertes got involved. He harshly gave a penalty against Pedro, who put his elbow against his face to stop it being pummelled by a free kick, with Tejera converting the spot kick. Alex Lopez popped up again to take advantage of a poor Juan Carlos clearance just three minutes later to level up matters, and then Gimnastic had to pinch themselves when

Jean Luc Assoubre put them in front in the 74th minute. Fortunately for Elche, a terrific shot from Dorca put them back on level terms with 12 minutes remaining, and though the home side dominated proceedings, they just couldn't get a shot on target, with their fans wondering what the season now holds for them as they are slipping more into relegation contention as opposed to harbouring hopes of promotion. The Ilicitanos are away to fellow mid-table side Zaragoza this Sunday lunchtime in the Segunda division.

A Win At Last! CD BUNOL 2 CD TORREVIEJA 3

Torrevieja at last got their first points of the season on Wednesday night, with the return of on-loan Pastor making a difference. Speeding down the right wing he looked up and delivered a sweet cross which Hugo accepted gratefully, nodding home to put Torry one up just before the half-hour mark. It was only Torry's fifth goal of the campaign. Buñol gathered themselves and hit back through Corell five minutes later to level the tie, then after five further minutes, rattled another home to take a 2-1 lead at the interval. Less than 10 minutes into the second half, injury-prone Martin was replaced by teenager Booker, and then

Vicente made way for Matheus as Torry chased the game. It looked a forlorn case with time running out when Torry were awarded a penalty on 88 minutes. Captain Lewis Allen took responsibility and hammered it home to make it 2-2. Deep into injury time Damian Aguero scored his first Torry goal to seal the win and lift his team off the bottom of the table. This was a vital first success for Torry, who must now follow it up with a first home win this Sunday at the Nelson Mandela stadium against the new bottom side, Muro, kicking off at 6.00 pm.

Elche’s interest in this season’s Copa del Rey came to an end on Tuesday night at the third round stage after a defensive foul-up involving José Ángel let Alcorcon’s Luis Fernández nip in and score in the 77th minute. It was the second time that the Ilicitanos had lost to the Madrid-based side in just over a week, having gone down by the same margin in their league encounter at the start of the month.

It was yet another throw away for the Ilicitanos similar to the weekend’s league draw against lowly Gimnastic, though coach Toril did make eight changes in the starting line-up, with half a mind looking to Sunday’s match at Zaragoza. Elche dominated the match but found Alcorcon keeper Dmitrovic in good form and it should be pointed out that they also made multiple changes from their normal Segunda division side.

Chances came and went for Elche whilst Alcorcon were happy to defend, and then accept their gift-wrapped present late on. José Ángel made a shocking pass to fellow defender Edu Albácar, which was pounced on by Luis Fernández, who beat Germán in the Ilicitanos goal. The error was costly and it wasn’t to be Elche’s day when in the dying seconds of the match, their best chance from Nino ended up hitting the post.

Spot On Obele CD ALMORADI 1 CD SEGORBE 0

Almoradi got Sunday's defeat at Borriol out of their system to get their third win of the season on Wednesday morning against fellow-promoted Segorbe who are already involved in a relegation battle. The home side had the better chances with Obele coming close with a 15th minute header before Cristian Sánchez was pushed by Ros in the penalty area and Obele converted the

23rd minute spot kick. Segorbe got more into the action in the second half, though Keko came close to doubling the Almoradi advantage with a long-range shot that grazed the crossbar on the hour mark. The home side defended their lead with no real scares, and have a far harder test to come this Sunday when they entertain one of the early season pace-setters, Villarreal C.

Toni Messi’s Back Tops Up

Lionel Messi returned to full training with Barcelona on Wednesday, three weeks after suffering a groin strain against Atletico Madrid. Messi limped out of last month’s 1-1 draw against

Atletico at the Nou Camp and has missed three games, including the 4-3 defeat at Celta Vigo on October 2nd. In addition, France international defender Samuel

Umtiti also returned to training alongside the Argentina star, however as a result their availability for Saturday's match at home to Deportivo is now very much in doubt.

Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos has signed a new contract which keeps him at the Bernabeu until at least the summer of 2022. The Germany star's last contract lasted until 2020, but Real have moved to extend that. Reports in his homeland

suggest Kroos is now the highest paid German footballer in the world. Kroos joined Real in 2014 from Bayern Munich for a fee of around 32 million euros. He has become a mainstay of the Real midfield side, playing 108 games and scor-

ing four goals. He has won the Champions League, World Club Cup and two European Super Cups. His side return to La Liga action after the international break with an exciting fixture at Real Betis this Saturday evening.

WANING WAYNE

It happens to us all… employer notices worker can’t quite cut the mustard as in previous years – checks age, nods – checks new blood available – and ancient employee’s days are numbered, writes JOHN MCGREGOR. Hopes held by worker for gold watch-type exit package and dismissal sympathetically handled. England’s greatest goalscorer Wayne Rooney is arriving at his career crossroads, with both club and country confused as to where to play the ‘old’ warhorse – if even to play the Liverpudlian legend at all, things have got that bad. As for the captaincy issue – spare me, it’s so irrelevant. Of course Wayne Rooney is past his best, anyone in football knows that. With his impressive, but burly physique, the role of a top striker is not suitable these days, but hey, the boy scored some crackers in his time. Man United and City fans will remember a certain fabulous over-

head bicycle-kicked goal a couple of seasons ago - but for different reasons. Rooney is not a welcome word at the Etihad (or Anfield or ...). But for club and country, ‘our’ Wayne has regularly delivered, and his long term fitness level has been good. Unlike certain other mercenaries of his era (you know who you are), the Evertonian has never sought the sanctuary of the treatment room for long. Goals and appearances will firmly put Rooney into the record books for ever Wayne has not been controversy-free in his long career, though, no sir. In 2007, there was the nuclear fallout with then- Everton manager David Moyes when United moved in for the 22-year-old Merseyside star. In his rather prematurely-published autobiography ‘Wayne Rooney: My Story So Far*’ allegations were made against Moyes for which Rooney was later forced to retract and apologise for, when the disappointed and angry

Scotsman sued in 2007. The book accused Moyes of being overbearing, controlling and ultimately responsible for Rooney's £27 million transfer to United in 2004. Ironically the two were later reunited at Old Trafford, apparently happily when Moyes took over at United in 2014, but of course that tenure did not last long. Then there was the famous spat with Alex Ferguson (no-one ever got the better of that legendary United manager) over the then-ludicrous salary demands-or-elseI-go. That unsavoury session was soon eclipsed by the jawdropping monies dwarfed by megamonied mercenaries like Yaya Toure (hey, what happened to him?). Fearless Fergie wasn’t averse to dropping Rooney either, long before it’s become fashionable. What’s that saying ‘You can take the boy out of ****, but you can’t take the **** out of the boy? Our Wayne was not a paragon of youthful virtue when

younger, caught out with professional women in hotels. The young man weathered the storm to later become a happily married man and father with his sweetheart Coleen, and unlike some of his fellow stars (Ryan Giggs comes to mind), memories of his naughty boy nights out are in the past. So what is the future for Wayne? A gentle

slide down the famous footballer pan, perhaps to pastures new to help and guide newer talent? The current example of past United stars is confusing and unhelpful. Is a backroom Giggs-style role (btw, where is that one going?) available? Probably not currently under Mourinho at the Theatre of Dreams. The confusing-of-late Neville brothers seem bent on showing how-not-to-do-

it , whereas pretty David Beckham seems to be making a decent fist of marketing himself. Sure, for now Rooney will keep playing pluckily as he always has done and knows no better - in midfield, wide, sub or whatever. But hey – the writing’s on the wall, Wayne… *Wayne Rooney: My Story So Far, 2006. Hunter Davis, published by Harper Collins.

Jordan Backs Gaz For Job Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson wants Gareth Southgate to secure the England manager's job for a long time. Henderson was skipper for Southgate's second game in charge, the goalless World Cup qualifying draw in Slovenia on Tuesday after the 2-0 win against Malta on Saturday. Southgate, 46, has the job initially for four games after he succeeded Sam Allardyce in September. "The manager has been brilliant. The players have got on really well with him this week," said Henderson, 26. "We need to put in the performances, not just for ourselves, but the fans and him and the coaching staff as well to make sure we keep working together for a long time." Southgate - who said after the Slovenia game that he has “inherited a mess” - gave the Reds midfielder the captain's armband after dropping Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney to the bench. Former Middlesbrough manager Southgate said: "It's been a remarkable experience. And I feel stronger and more confident for it, and I recognise the responsibility it brings." He now has a World Cup qualifier against Scotland at Wembley on November 11th and a friendly against Spain four days later to persuade the Football Association to give him the job full time. "He gives responsibility to players and he listens. It's been a good week," said Henderson. "It would have been better with two wins, but we've got to take the positives; beating Malta and getting a good point from this game."

FURY SUSPENDED

JESS CALLS IT QUITS Jessica Ennis-Hill, who won heptathlon gold for Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympics, has retired from athletics. The 30-year-old had hinted at retirement after winning a silver medal at the Rio Olympics in August. In a post on social media, Ennis-Hill - also a double world champion - said it was "one of the toughest decisions I've had to make". "I've always said I wanted to leave on a high and have no regrets," she added. Ennis-Hill's heptathlon gold was one of the most iconic moments of London 2012’s Super Saturday. But she then missed out on retaining her Olympic title in Rio by 35 points to Belgium's Nafissatou Thiam. Speaking afterwards, she said she would not rush a decision over ending her career. In her statement on Thursday, she said, "retiring now is right". "I want to thank my family and incredible team who have spent so much of their time supporting me and enabling me to achieve my dreams," she added. "Also, a huge thank you to all those people who have supported and followed my career over the years."

British boxing bosses suspended Tyson Fury's licence to fight yesterday, a day after he relinquished his world heavyweight titles to focus on his mental health problems. Fury, 28, has not fought since beating Wladimir Klitschko in November 2015 and has twice withdrawn from rematches. The British Boxing Board of Control confirmed his licence was suspended "pending further investigation into anti-doping and medical issues". Fury was charged with a doping offence by the UK's anti-doping body in June. On Wednesday Fury vacated his WBO and WBA world heavyweight titles, saying he was unable to defend them because of his health. He will now have to meet with the BBBofC before a decision is taken on whether he can fight again.

BATTLE OF THE BLUES The Pristine Prem kicks off again tomorrow (writes JOHN MCGREGOR), with a fantastic football feast of Britain’s Got Talent. Early doors it’s a cracker: reigning Champions Leicester City v Champs-two-years-ago (were they really?) Chelsea. Both teams have started the season modestly if both Blues want to blast back to the top table - don’t miss it! Mid-afternoon there’s another five fierce games, the pick of which must be Man City at home to Everton, another all-Blue battle.

Just like last season, City have stormed out of the blocks looking invincible, but recently have been looking mortal again. Spurs barnstorming 2 – 0 win over the Blues last time out will have had Pep puzzled. The Toffees have started the season well, but consistency is what Ronald Koeman’s men need: a 1 - 1 with Pardew’s Palace provided a point, and Everton are only four points behind the leaders in fifth. But with Liverpool, Arsenal & Tottenham closing in, City must

win to stay top. On Saturday evening a mighty Capital clash sees upwardly-mobileagain Crystal Palace take on a West Ham side where everyone is asking awkward questions - like, ‘Where has it all gone wrong so quickly?’. That’s a good ask at the new London Stadium where great things were, and still are expected. Has the scraped 1 – 1 draw last time out against modest Middlesborough turned the corner for the beleaguered Hammers down in 18th place - only third from bottom?

Traditionally one of the games of the season is Liverpool v Man United – and it’s on this Monday night. Put basically, the nasty neighbours loathe each other: one huge, worldrenowned club always

in the other’s deep shadow, depending who’s preening in the limelight at the time. Vibrant Liverpool have it all going for them: the Reds are currently in second, and United should be the nervier of

the two clubs. Jose Mourinho has not yet fully harnessed his expensively- assembled team into one with a consistently winning formula, and the Red Devils fans will be on edge: - game on!
