YOU CAN'T MAKE IT UP! La Paloma Car Park Shocker

BY ALEX TRELINSKI

P

ilar de la Horadada council have been ordered to cough up nearly two and a half million euros for an unused car park at the controversial and unfinished La Paloma cultural centre. Pilar mayor, Ignacio Ramos, has said the authority will appeal against the ruling handed out by an Elche court last week in another twist involving a building that over the years has made national headlines over its spiralling costs. The car park order involves the constructon of the cultural centre, which was never completed, with the court saying that since the contractor got no benefit from operating the finished car park, it lost out on all of the

income that had been promised and projected in the original contract. This in effect, according to the court, meant that Pilar council had broken their side of the contract and would have to pay compensation to the constructor. The building of the Centro Cultural Mariana Baches, nicknamed as La Paloma ,was originally budgeted at two point four million euros, but completion costs rocketed to 12 million euros, with four million already spent on the structure, before the project was mothballed by the previous Partido Popular administration in 2014. Socialist PSOE mayor, Ignacio Ramos, was attacked at the weekend by

the PP for what they regarded as a mismanagement of the situation, with calls for his

resignation. Ramos only came to power in May 2015, and tried to resuscitate the La Paloma project earlier this year, but his plans were opposed by the PP and the single independent Vecinos por el Pilar councillor, with those parties saying that his plans lacked specific information. Council spokesman Alfonso Armenteros emphasised at Monday's news conference that it was important that the cultural centre is completed as Pilar needs a library, auditorium, and museum, and called for all political parties to work together on achieving its completion. His comments were echoed by Ignacio Ramos who said that the whole issue should not be politicised.

The CLARO political party has said the Orihuela council has been doing nothing to stop the recent increase of illegal waste dump sites around the Orihuela Costa. The grouping has listed a number of offending sites including one in between

Calle Duero and the canal, by an asphalt road which is used by vehicles travelling between La Florida and Las Mimosas. CLARO says the fly-tippers get a free ride as there are not enough local police officers to catch them in the act.

Vega Baja Hospital manager Dr. Miguel Fayos got a needle stuck into him this week, but it was all planned as he was given a shot of the flu vaccine which is being made available across the Orihuela health department region as part of the annual campaign to get people jabbed. 21 and a half thousand vaccines have been allocated to Orihuela alone within the Valencian region’s provi-

sion, with children aged under 14; pregnant women; and the over-sixties seen as the most vulnerable groups. Last winter’s campaign saw 51 percent of elderly residents in the Valencian region getting a flu jab, with Dr. Fayos emphasising that all doctors and nurses in the Orihuela area have been told to tell possibly vulnerable patients that they need to get vaccinated.

295 doses of flu vaccine have been allocated to Alicante Province with health professionals as well as Valencian health minister, Carmen Montón, saying that half the people who are entitled to jabs are not taking up the offer to have the injections at their local health centres. Figures suggest that 95 percent of flu cases last winter in the area came from people who were not vaccinated.

The Murcia region has some of the highest proportion of domestic violence cases in Spain according to a new survey. Nationally the number of cases heard in Spanish courts in the second quarter of 2016 rose by 13 percent when compared with the same period in 2015, according to the Observatory against Domestic Violence. The period between April and June saw 36,319 complaints of gender violence (of which 33,593 were made by women) in the courts, compared with 32,023 the previous year. Some 64.4 percent of the cases presented to court (two percent more than

in 2015) were resolved with a punishment for the person accused of carrying out the mistreatment. The regions with the highest proportion of cases were in the Canary Islands with a ratio of 22.5 cases per 10,000 women; Murcia, with a ratio of 21.3; and the Balearic islands where the ratio was 21.2. The study showed seven out of every ten complaints were made by the victim, while 16.48 percent were made by the police after intervening in the case and with just three point eight percent of complaints made by the victims' families.

More Wheels The number of vehicles manufactured in Spain rose by just under eight percent in the first nine months of 2016, compared with the same period last year, according to figures published this week by the Association of Car

Manufacturers (ANFAC). ANFAC said a total of 2,220,722 vehicles were manufactured in the first nine months of the year, while in September alone, the sector produced 258,053 vehicles, "almost 12,000 vehicles per day."

Torrevieja council has formally launched the start of the process to advertise a new waste collection contract after the government team had their plans for the municipality to take control of garbage collection voted down a few weeks ago. Councillor Fanny Serrano says that the government team will ask for council officers to come up with proposals to speed up the advertising of the tender as a matter of urgency, and also confirmed that it will be a single contract, with waste collec-

tion and street cleaning not being split, as had been rumoured. The private contractor Acciona is continuing

to maintain a service on a monthly basis, despite its contract with the authority ending in the summer.

“Disappearing” Brits Torrevieja’s population is continuing to plummet according to official padron figures which show that 15 thousand residents have “disappeared” over the last two years, of which a large proportion are said to be UK citizens. The municipal census figures put Torrevieja’s population at just over 93 thousand, compared to 108 thousand in June 2014, with the proportion of foreign residents down to 46 percent as opposed to 51 percent two years ago. The largest number of non-Spanish nationals come from Britain, with the official figure logged as 6.706, a massive fall from nearly 13 thousand registered on padrons in 2014.

A combination of Brits leaving the area; splitting more time between Torrevieja and the UK; and simply not bothering to reregister on the muncipal padron is said to be behind

the fall, along with an overestimation of population figures from the previous Torrevieja council compared to the lower figure of the National Statistics Institute came up with.

End In Sight Spain's acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy accepted King Felipe VI's request on Tuesday to seek Parliament's approval to form a government and end the country's 10 months of political deadlock. Rajoy is all but guaranteed to obtain that approval either yesterday or tomorrow (Saturday) following the rival Socialist party's decision on Sunday to stop blocking his bid and to abstain in a second parliamentary vote. Two inconclusive elections since December have left Rajoy running a caretaker government. The Partido Popular got most seats in both elections, but lacks a parliamentary majority and needs outside support to form a minority government. Rajoy spoke on Tuesday after the King wrapped up two days of talks with leaders from each party in an effort to end the impasse ahead of a deadline this coming Monday. If no government is in place by that date, a third round of elections would have to be called. The investiture session started on Wednesday, with a first vote taking place yesterday (Thursday), ahead of a second and final one on Saturday. At the time of going

3

to press, Rajoy was unlikely to get the necessary absolute majority of votes in the 350seat chamber in the first round. During a second vote, he would only need more deputies in favour than against, meaning that barring a major upset, he would be elected premier on a full-time basis over the weekend. As it stands, Rajoy has the support of 170 deputies - 137 of them from his own party, and the rest from the centrist Ciudadanos party. The PSOE socialist party, who have 84 deputies, voted for the abstention to avoid a potentially disastrous third election and more political uncertainty? The party, long one of the country's major political groups, suffered its worstever results in both the December and June elections.

It agreed to vote against Rajoy in the first vote, but abstain in a second round, thus letting him through. But the Socialists remain bitterly divided over the abstention issue, which led to the resignation of their leader Pedro Sanchez earlier this month. Some regional leaders are threatening to rebel and vote against Rajoy, but this is unlikely to change the outcome, though the vote may not spell the end of the period of uncertainty. Acting leader Javier Fernandez said this week that the Socialists would not support the PP's 2017 budget which proposes five billion euros of cuts to meet European Union targets. "In no event do we plan on giving stability to Rajoy's government or approving its budgets," Javier Fernandez told reporters.

Safety Call

La Federación de Asociaciones de Orihuela Costa (FAOC) says that a road that goes over the AP-7 is not safe for pedestrians because it hasn't got a pavement and suffers from poor lighting. The association claims that residents of the Lomas urbanisation at Cabo Roig are taking their life into their hands by walking along the Calle Cabo de Creus to the local health centre and other facilities, including the

beach. FAOC says that the speed of traffic is a danger, especially with lorries involved, as there are no designated crossings over the road, making it a risky business for pedestrians, especially if they are with a baby buggy. The association added that the Orihuela council passed a motion a year ago calling for improvements, but nothing has happened since.

Carmen’s Call

An opposition Partido Popular councillor is calling on work to be finished on building a park in the El Chaparral area of Torrevieja, after the project was suspended 15 months ago due to the budget being spent and issues concerning the work contracts. The 40-thousand-square-metre area was being redeveloped by members of the Mediterraneo employment workshop, with a variety of recreational facilities set to be erected on a piece of exwasteland.

Councillor Carmen Gómez has submitted a PP motion calling on Torrevieja council to make provision for the completion next year to be paid for by the 2017 budget. She reminded the mayor José Manuel Dolon and employment councillor Victor Ferrández that over 2,400 La Siesta and El Chaparral residents had signed and presented them with a petition calling on the project to be completed and that they cared for their local environment and were "sick of being lied to".

Flood Cost 27 million euros will have to be spent to stop major storm flooding in Torrevieja, according to water company Agamed. The cost would be

split between the so-called “western basin” at 17.8 million euros, with close to 10 million need to create a storm collection network next to the N-332.

La Mata Boost

Work has started on improving the state of the land around La Mata natural park in Torrevieja in a joint project between Torrevieja council’s environment department and ANSE (Association of Naturalists, Southeast Spain). The focus is on the dunes in the Molino del Agua area of the park as well as around Calle Mayor, with Torrevieja councillor Fanny Serrano saying that the project is good for both the environment and also improving the experience for tourists. New plants are being planted as well as a evasive species being removed.

More Jihadi Arrests In Spain Spain's Interior Ministry says police have arrested a Moroccan man suspected of spreading propaganda for the Islamic State armed group. The man, identified only by the initials A.B., was arrested on Wednesday in the northern town of Calahorra. The Ministry said he helped promote the Islamic group by praising its attacks and those who travelled to fight for it. It said he was linked to another Moroccan, Salim Aghmir, who was arrested in Pamplona last December. Police arrested two Moroccan-born imams on the island of Ibiza on Tuesday on similar suspicions.

Fugitive Found

A 40-year-old British man wanted on drug charges back in the UK has been arrested by the National Police on the northern Costa Blanca. The fugitive, with the initials L.W., first

lived in the Malaga area but then moved north to Alfaz del Pi. He was detained on a European Arrest Warrant and faces ten years in jail back in Britain for drugs trafficking.

Home Comforts

Captura Capture

A Catral man who grew marijuana in the lounger of his home has been arrested by the Guardia Civll. The 48year-old Spaniard was

released on bail, with 19 kilos of marijauna buds and 11 large marijuana plants, some reaching two metres in height, being seized.

Everybody Off! A suspected British pervert on the run from UK authorities has been arrested less than a day after his picture appeared in the latest Operation Captura list of fugitives trying to escape justice. Matthew Sammon was detained on the Costa del Sol after undercover police swooped on his camper van in the Fuengirola area. He was wanted for possessing indecent images of children and is said to have been hiding out in Spain for nearly two years.

A Costa Azul bus caught fire in Dehesa de Campoamor on Thursday with two Torrevieja fire crews called in to extinguish the blaze. The

incident happened on Calle Saavedra Fajardo with nobody being injured as investigators try to work out what caused the incident.

Lab Raid

A drugs laboratory producing cocaine has been shut down by the National Police in Salinas in Upper Vinalopó. Four people from Salinas, Catral, and the Murcia region were detained as part of an-ongoing operation with two kilos of cocaine seized, and the men charged with public health offences including plans to distribute drugs around the coast of Alicante Province and Murcia.

Bail Granted A Torrevieja judge has bailed four Lithuanians at three thousand euros each, after they were remanded in custody in July for allegedly being part of a Guardamar and Pilar de la Horadadabased operation that stole Toyota Land Cruiser cars and shipped them to Lithuania. The men have had their passports taken away and will have to report to the authorities every fortnight. Two other defendants have already been released, whilst five other Lithuanians are still wanted on European arrest

warrants after last summer's joint operation between the Guardia Civil and Europol. 14 stolen vehicles worth around 430 thousand euros have so

far been recovered by the Guardia with the gang stealing the vehicles in Madrid as well as in Alicante Province and the Murcia region.

Catalan Clash Catalunya’s ban on bullfighting in its region introduced in 2010 has been ruled as illegal by Spain’s constitutional court in what is set to be another major clash between Madrid authorities and Catalunya politicians that are pushing for independence. Nine of the 12 judges ruled that the “preservation of common cultural heritage” was the responsibility of the state and the Catalan Parliament had exceeded its authority in banning what the court described in a statement as “one more expression of a cultural nature that forms part of the common cultural heritage”.

They did that say Catalunya could “regulate the development of bullfights” or “establish requirements for the special care and attention of fighting bulls”.

Not surprisingly, Neus Munté, spokeswoman for the Catalan government, said her government would “set to work immediately to ensure that the ruling has no practical effect”.

Brothels Busted The National Police have arrested 21 people and freed four women while breaking up an alleged human trafficking ring on the Costa del Sol. The bust in Malaga happened after a victim called an anti-sex trafficking hotline saying she was being forced into prostitution and to consume illegal drugs. Police say the ring was led by a woman who operated four brothels that outside appeared to be luxury hotels with victims forced to prosti-

tute themselves in "marathonic sessions." One of the freed women first was exploited when she was a minor. The National Police say

the anonymous hotline established three years ago has received more than 1,800 calls this year, leading to about 400 interventions by the police.

No Great Surprise Alicante-Elche airport will set an all-time record for passenger numbers at the end of the year, with more than 12 million people travelling to and from it during 2016. The not-too surprising statement came from the Madrid government delegate to the Valencian Government, delegate Juan Carlos Moragues, on a trip to the Customs offices run by the Guardia Civil at the airport on Tuesday. Moragues said that October's figures will take the total to 10 and a half million passengers, which was the overall figure for 2015, and that the airport has so far seen an overall rise of 16 percent over the first nine months of 2016, compared

to the same period last year. Airport manager Santiago Martinez said that the rises were down to more routes and companies using Alicante-Elche, with UK visitors accounting for 45 per-

cent of all traffic. Martinez added that he had not noticed any signs of the Brexit vote deflating British passenger numbers and that everything looked good for the future.

Bench Death Riddle

The National Police have launched an investigation after a 51-year-old British man was found dead outside Malaga airport on the Costa del Sol. The man, said to be Steven Allford, was discovered bound to a bench with cable ties on Friday morning with his trousers pulled down to his ankles. Reports said that the area where the body was found is frequented by vagrants. An airport worker is said to have alerted police after he found the body in an area between the terminal building and the airport’s train

station. An autopsy had revealed the Mr. Allford had died after he inhaled his own vomit after consuming large quantities of alcohol. Investigators said the man’s body showed no sign

of inflicted injuries, but suggested his tied posture may have contributed to his death. They said the fact his trousers had been lowered suggested he may have been sexually assaulted.

Temper Temper! A Valencia City bus driver gave his 30 passengers a journey to remember last week when he went into a road rage, hitting a car, and then locking his passengers in whilst he went outside the vehicle to have a row with car driver. Witnesses say the driver got annoyed when a man in a car inadvertently blocked his path on a Valencia street and rammed into it. The car-owner got out, took his six-year-old daughter – who was travelling in a booster seat in the back – out of the vehicle and left her on the pavement, then confronted the bus driver. They had a public slanging match, and the car-owner threatened to call the police. Some 30 or so passengers on the bus began to protest when their request for the driver to open the doors and to let them out was ignored, because they were not at a

scheduled stop. One of them managed to attract the attention of a passing National Police car through the window. The patrol car was flagged down by the car driver, who explained what happened, and officers ordered the bus driver to let his passengers alight. “We were very scared. We thought the coach was going to tip over, because they were bashing it and it was leaning dangerously,” said one passenger.

The bus was grounded for over two hours while the police breathalysed and drugtested the driver, who showed up negative for both. “He chased me for about 200 metres and I had to keep swerving to avoid him, dodging from lane to lane,” said the car driver, Juanjo R. “I can't take her on public transport now because she's scared of buses. I tried to the following day, but she said, 'Daddy, not the bus',” and I couldn't put her through it.”

The Con Is Over

A serial conman wanted by police for a £21,000 fraud in the UK has been arrested on the Costa Blanca, and extradition proceedings are underway. Norman Fowler went missing in 2014 after being sentenced to nine months in jail at Norwich Crown Court. The 38-year-old was later arrested by the Guardia Civil for unrelated gun licensing matters, but was released in May. After skipping bail from Norwich Crown Court, Fowler rented an apartment in December 2014, but moved to Pedregeur last January after neighbours found out about his past. Once there he tried to sell a stolen car to expat Diana Lindsay-Vosper. Last month an un-named expat said he had received a 2,500 euro cheque that bounced from Fowler in exchange for goods he had sold him. The man said: "Nobody believed he could be a fraudster as he was such a sad-looking guy. He had the perfect cover."

Not Our Fault

Almoradi council will have to pay out 347 thousand euros in interest on projects that were not paid for the previous Partido Popular administration, according to current PSOE socialist finance councillor Abelardo Muñoz. Building works that were

not fully paid for include the building of the Guardia Civil barracks in the town, with Muñoz saying that the problem is “caused by the mismanagement” of the previous government team” and is being solved by a series of payments being done in instalments.

On Schedule

San Pedro del Pinatar's mayor, Visitación Martínez, says that the shopping centre at Los Saez, just off the N-332 road, and next to the existing Dos Mares complex, will be open for business on December 1st. The centre has cost 15 million euros to build and is set to create around 100 jobs.

The Mayor visited the site for a progress report, with the centre set to open in time for the pre-Christmas and Three Kings rush as predicted in April. The site will include an AKI DIY shop; a supermarket from the Valencian-based Vidal chain; and a Burger King restaurant, in addition to a petrol station.

Narcissistic Killer

The Guardia Civil have said that their investigation into a family slaying in the village of Pioz, some 50 kilometres from Madrid, is closed after a man confessed to the killings after he was arrested on his return to the country. François Patrick Nogueira Gouveia, 20, had brought forward his flight to his native Brazil by several weeks and left the country in August, the day after the couple and their two children, aged four and one, were found dismembered in bin-bags in their rented villa in Pioz. Nogueira, the couple's nephew, had lived with

them for a while in Madrid, but his aggressive nature had led the family to move out of the area without giving a forwarding address. The accused admitted to killing his aunt, uncle and two young cousins, saying that he had "an uncontrollable desire to kill, that he was unable to control it and that he was even aware of it" when he went to visit his relatives in Pioz on August 17th, said investigator Juan Jesus Reina. "Patrick clearly knew what he was doing, so much so that he brought with him plastic bags, sticky tape and a knife," he added.

"He tells us all the time that he is not crazy," said Reina, who described him as a solitary, egocentric and narcissistic person. On the day of the crime, his aunt let him in and he killed her in the kitchen with the knife, but says he does not remember the murder of the children, Reina said. Hours later, his uncle returned home, and he killed him in the hallway. After dismembering his aunt and uncle and putting the corpses in plastic bags, Nogueira Gouveia showered, rested a few hours before leaving the next morning, back to his "normal life," said Reina.

record title attempt to raise money for breast cancer research, as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Ruth, who came fifth in the 2008 series of The X

Factor, successfully set a new record for the "Most Live Concerts in 12 hours in multiple towns" by putting on shows in eight venues including Murcia.

Tony Mayes - About Life

7

Friday 28th October 2016

It’s A Poisoned Chalice Do you want to know what is a job out of hell in Spain? Anyone who has been foolish enough to volunteer will know only too well what I am going to say next - it's agreeing to be a president of a community. Within days, your quiet, peaceful life is transformed, with residents misguidedly thinking that they own you, and that they can inflict all their problems on you, morning, noon and night. Sadly, some residents forget that they actually own their homes and that they have to look after, protect and maintain them. Just

because they have moved into an urbanisation they think that it means that there is this wonderful organisation that will do everything for them and sort out every problem. It's as if they think they are council house tenants or have a landlord benefactor who will right every wrong and be on their side in any neighbour dispute. And, of course, when they hear the word president, they think that person is a cross between God and a fairy godmother with superhuman powers who will do everything for them

and make their life perfect in every way. And if that president doesn't perform the miracles the residents demand, then heaven help him or her. I have, totally foolishly, agreed to be president for the third year and I must be stark, staring mad. I do it because nobody else is foolish enough to put their name forward and, if push came to shove, then it would be names in a hat, and some victim is given the badge of honour irrespective of how totally illequipped that person would be for the task. It could be

even more ridiculous if that owner only came to his property for a fortnight a year on holiday - he would be press-ganged into it. Crazy or what? The result? An urbanisation at risk of money spent extremely foolishly or worse, or battle royals between factions, and the president hopelessly out of his depth. I've met a number of presidents and expresidents during my time in Spain and all have similar experiences to what I have described - some saying they have been threatened, verbally and or physically,

Taking Advantage Something that really gets my goat is people abusing their authority, and it's far, far worse when those abusers are police officers taking full advantage of the vulnerable. Firstly, I want to stress that the vast majority of the 124 thousand police officers in the UK are trustworthy but, it seems, there are more bad apples than we have previously realised. It's easy for a predatory copper who comes across an attractive woman who has committed an offence to suggest "favours" from her in exchange for not taking her to court. No doubt there are many prostitutes who have tales to tell about police who demand "freebies". Increasingly cases like this are coming to light and forces across the country are examining more than 150 cases of alleged sexual

misconduct by police. 400 members of the public have made complaints over the past five years. Of course, there are going to be cases where spurious and illfounded allegations are levelled against totally innocent police officers, but the level of complaints which appear to be genuine is worrying.

Add to these, cases where police have deliberately hidden the crime, dealing with it internally so as to protect the "good" name of the police and it gets even more alarming. I welcome an investigation which has been carried out by a UK newspaper into the scandal and news that the report is

being taken seriously enough to prompt a decision that police who abuse their power for sexual advantage face new criminal sanctions. We don't yet know what that will be, but I hope it's harsh and I hope that it will be Draconian against police chiefs who still attempt to hush it all up.

threatened with denuncias and court actions by residents not getting their own way, and, of course, it's all the president's fault. And when it comes to annual meetings, then many end up in open warfare between groups of residents who have fallen out with each other during the preceding months or years, and you, as president, have to try to cope with people who have reverted to their Stone Age tribal past. So, if you are tempted to want to do your "civic" duty and volunteer, good luck to

you, you will need it. Oh, sorry, have to break off here, there's a knock at the door another resident with a lifeor-death problem. I wonder what it is? Feral cats yet again, a street that hasn't been cleaned for a few hours or children being children and making a bit of noise? When you're working you haven't got time to bother about trivialities, but when you're retired you have all day, every day, to find something to moan about and every day you get that bit more intolerant - and that's a terrible combination.

It Doesn’t Add Up!

Here we go again, yet another crazy bit of nonsense of putting the environment before the economic good of Britain. I'm talking of a decision as to whether to allow a new opencast coal mine to be created in Northumberland. The local council granted permission for the mine, but the government has ordered a public inquiry on climate change grounds. Don't get me wrong. I would like to see an end to the use of all fossil fuels and the use of green energy worldwide. But we're a long way off of that. Environmentalists are heralding the decision to hold an inquiry as the first step on the road to a total ban on coal

mining in Britain. How crazy is that when we are still burning many millions of tonnes of coal in the UK? What sense is there in having to import it rather than use or own, creating UK jobs in the process and helping our economy? Why are there so many people who would rather see the economy suffer and people in hardship on the altar of the environment? Surely the priority should be to bring to an end the use of coal a.s.a.p, but until that time comes, for goodness sake, let us use our own resources and not buy in from abroad, which is even more harmful to the environment because of the shipping.

Ladies Weigh-In A group of Torrevieja ladies calling themselves "The Weigh-In Club" recently held their fifth annual event in aid of AECC Cancer charity in Torrevieja, and again surpassed their previous best figure. Based at Restaurante Casa Mia in El Chaparral, Torrevieja, the ladies raised 2065 euros by selling homemade cakes and holding a very successful raffle. As in previous years Casa Mia hosted the event, but many other

local businesses and supporters also provided help by donating prizes. AECC hospital volunteer Ann Bissett was there to collect the money from Caroline Richardson of the Weigh-in Club. Ann thanked all the ladies present for their generosity and hard work, but also reminded them of the need for regular breast cancer and cervical smear checks, which AECC can always provide.

Three donkeys have been rescued and put into the care of the Rojales-based Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, which celebrated its eighth anniversary last weekend. The first donkey was seized by the Los Montesinos police and placed in the care of centre co-founders Rod and Sue Weeding at the start of the month. A young and feisty character, the donkey has since been castrated and treated for a painful hoof abscess. The other two baby donkeys (pictured) were found dumped by a busy Almoradí roundabout

on October 13th. “Luckily the Almoradí police were brilliant and managed to get them literally into the police station and hold them in a little pen for stray dogs until Rod arrived,” Sue said. The centre is to hold a fundraising competition to name the three new don-

keys. Entries cost two euros per name suggestion and can be made via the centre’s online donation form or in person at their next open day on Sunday November 6th between 1.00 pm and 4.00 pm. Visit their website www.easyhorsecare.net or follow the centre on Facebook.

Helping Your Fearful Dog

The Best of British

The first ever Great British Dog Survey, undertaken by the charity Guide Dogs, has revealed that many owners are treating their dogs like children. The UK's dogs often share the most popular baby names, are spoilt rotten on their birthdays and get pampered on an almost weekly basis. The survey found that Poppy is the most popular dog name overall, as well as being the fifth most popular for baby girls in 2015. When it comes to boys, Charlie is the second most popular dog name and also fifth when it comes to baby boys. Poppy, Molly, and Bella led the female list, whilst the top three male dog names are Alfie, Charlie, and Max.

It doesn't just stop with names though as four out of 10 dogs get their own birthday present, and thousands of them get dressed up over the festive season. It appears the nation's love of dogs knows no bounds! Nearly 70 percent of dogs are groomed at least once a month, and their favourite toy is a ball. The survey also found that Labrador Retrievers (at 82 percent) are the most popular UK dog breed, followed by Jack Russell Terriers and Border Collies. The results of the survey make it clear just how much dogs mean to the millions of owners across the UK, with Lancashire apparently having the highest proportion of dog owners in Britain.

Triggers are the things or situations that frighten your dog. Your dog may show varying degrees of fear including dilated pupils, drooling, lowered ears, cowering, fleeing, growling or biting. If you are unsure of how a dog’s body language indicates fear, there are websites and books that can help you learn. Dogs rarely bite without warning. Typically they have gone through a series of behaviours that people do not understand or ignore, that say, “Hey, back off, I’m afraid!” Understanding what your dog is afraid of and just how afraid it is, is key to beginning the process of helping your dog get over its fears. Make a list of your dog’s triggers. Perhaps your dog is afraid of men, but not women, or children but not adults. Bicycles might send your dog into a frenzy of barking or the coffee grinder makes your dog run under the table. Little dogs might not scare them but big dogs do. Your dog may have a different ‘threshold’ for each of its triggers. The threshold is the point at which your dog can no longer deal with a trigger before reacting in a negative way (with fear or aggression). For example, a dog walking across the street only makes your dog pay attention to it, but if that dog were to move

toward your dog, your dog begins to growl or lunge. One new person coming into your house is ok, but if two people come in your dog runs and hides. Your dog may be able to tolerate some of its triggers in some locations but not others. In order to retrain your dog you need to keep them sub-threshold, or in other words, before they act in a fearful way. To our dogs, affection is a reward. By comforting a fearful dog, you are rewarding what it’s doing in that moment: being scared. You cannot explain to a dog why it shouldn’t be scared, or tell the dog that the frightening thing won’t hurt it or is going away soon — they do not have the cognitive abilities to understand those concepts. What they do understand is, “I’m terrified and it’s getting me a reward. My human wants me to do this.” Over time, a timid, back-ofthe-pack dog can be turned into a skittish, terrified animal because of humans unintentionally rewarding him when he’s in a negative energy state. Dogs don’t need love when they’re fearful; they need leadership. Dogs exhibit what’s called allelomimetic behaviour. What this means in simple language is that they learn by imitating. Normally, this kind of learning

only happens between members of the same species, but because of the special relationship between dogs and humans, they also learn by imitating us. This is why remaining calm and assertive when your dog is fearful is the key to helping them get over that fear — if they see that you aren’t scared by that loud noise, it will make them more confident. If their Pack Leader is ignoring the scary thing, then maybe it isn’t really that scary. Remember, dogs have four instinctive responses to stimuli in the environment: fight, flight, avoidance, and surrender. A fearful dog exhibits either avoidance or flight: they try to either actively ignore or run away from the stimulus completely. Now we don’t want fight, which can sometimes be an extreme fear reaction — this is the classic “cornered animal” attacking viciously even though it’s scared to death. We want surrender, which is the dog simply accepting the stimulus without having a strong reaction to it. It’s that calm, assertive energy that leads a dog to surrender, and this is the proper way to approach your fearful dog — with energy and actions, not words; by showing and not saying, “I’m in charge here. Everything is

okay.” There’s one other way in which we can make a dog’s fear worse, and that’s to feel fear ourselves. Remember, dogs learn by imitating, and a fearful Pack Leader will lead to an unbalanced and unpredictable dog. The dog may shut down completely in a terrified state, or she may become extremely aggressive toward anyone or anything that approaches. This is because, when the human is fearful, the leadership role is empty and a dog’s natural reaction is to take over. To the dog, there has to be a Pack Leader. In the worst case scenario, it can take one incident of a dog reacting with fearful aggression to create a feedback loop that just makes things worse: The dog lunges at someone on the walk; the human becomes afraid that this will happen again; the human’s fear over the behaviour does make it happen again; the human becomes more fearful and the process repeats. A fearful dog does not need comforting and definitely does not need the human sharing in that fear. A fearful dog needs a calm, assertive leader. We can’t tell our dogs that everything is going to be okay with words, but we can definitely show them with our actions and energy. Stay calm, and don’t be afraid.

Annuity Freedom – CANCELLED! By Keith Littlewood, International Financial Adviser The Government has announced that the proposed annuity flexibility plan, which was announced in April 2015 along with all the new pension flexibility changes that are now in force, is not going to go ahead. Annuity flexibility was George Osborne’s brainchild, but this idea has now been quashed by Theresa May’s new government. Could this be the first of many U-turns the new government makes in an attempt to make its mark and state its new position by moving away from decisions taken by the Cameron administration? Who is affected? There are over 5 million people with annuities, and research by Saga claimed that 58% of holders would want to sell their annuity for a cash sum. This announcement is going to be a great disappointment for many retirees, especially with expats who are already suffering from the poor pound V euro exchange rate experienced at the moment. Annuity flexibility could have been the answer to many financial hardships. Why annuity flexibility was thought to be a good idea? Annuities have had a very poor reputation. When the new pension flexibility rules came into force, this was seen as a great opportunity to set things right for retirees. Annuities were thought to be: • Poor value – returns are based on interest rates and bond rates, which have now been extremely low for many years so annuity holders are getting and have been getting bad value for many years. • Lack of advice – many retirees did not get the best advice and often just ended up with annuities when pensions matured as the default option from pension companies. • Many are so small that losing the income would not be missed by a pensioner and a lump sum from the sale would make much more of a difference to the standard of living. • Annuities often die with the holder, which can leave a spouse in financial difficulty. • Completely inflexible – once started that’s it, you are stuck with it. Why is it being scrapped? It does seem that taking away this potential windfall for annuity holders and allowing the same flexibility for them as people with pensions not yet matured would have at least gone to some way in putting things right. The new government reasons are that there will not be a demand high enough that would allow providers to be competitive, which may lead to consumers getting a bad deal in a small and limited market. Yet if Saga’s statistics are correct, there would be almost 3 million pensioners sitting and waiting to sign up!

In my opinion this is a backward step. Taking choice away from consumers is not good, especially when the carrot has already been dangled and flexibility is offered to new retirees. If you are about to start taking a pension at retirement or still have a pension pot in the UK that you have not started taking, please take qualified financial advice on the matter early, as decisions can affect the rest of your life. I have been personally advising clients in the UK and Spain for 30 years on these matters. In today’s financial climate, it is essential you do everything you can to make sure your money is safe and secure and what you want to transpire in the future has the best chance of happening. 14 BY DAVE SILVER

I TURNED to my pals down at the pub the other day and commented: 'I honestly don't know why people are attracted to me.' Indoor Lou was the first person to laugh. 'Attractive? You? Blimey, mate, you're just plain and ordinary looking. You're certainly no George Clooney.' Fearful Phil joined in the jollity with: 'Dave Silver, are you having a laugh? You're just the wearer of a homely and unfussy face.' Then it was Dave the barman's turn. 'Attractive? Dave Silver? Get outta here!' He paused and then added: 'On second thoughts, DON'T get outta here. I need every customer I can get.' By this time everyone in the pub was guffawing. I could even hear Fag Ash Bill giggling outside on the pavement

Friday 28th October 2016

I’m The Main Attraction As Things Turn Ugly before he broke into a coughing fit and dropped his latest lit cigarette. Obviously, I didn't hear the ciggy drop. I merely saw it rolling under the pub door and extinguishing itself under Ol' Red Eyes' sleeping form on the floor. Daft Barry, who looked quietly confused during my character assassination, broke his silence to ask: 'Who is George Clooney? 'You hurtful lot!' I whinged. 'I never claimed to be ATTRACTIVE. I said that people were ATTRACTED to me. There is a big difference. 'Then you'll have to explain that difference,' croaked a semi-awake Ol' Red Eyes, blearily squinting up at me from the carpet. Shutting my eyes in deep concentration, I started to explain my theory.

'People often treat attraction and attractiveness as the same thing but they really aren't. You can find someone attractive but you still may not be attracted to them. 'Conversely, you may be attracted to someone but don't really find them necessarily that attractive.' I opened my eyes in order to register the reaction so far. But the pub was deserted. 'Where did everyone go?' I inquired. Of course, nobody replied because there was noone there. Even the semi-comatose Ol' Red Eyes had been schlepped outside. I could see the drag marks left by his slippers on the carpet pile. As for Dave the barman -who never left his station behind the bar in case we pubsters pinched his meagre takings or helped ourselves to

his bottles of diluted spirits -he had also disappeared, taking his cash till with him. I raced outside to find my former mates attempting to hide behind the dustbins. Those who couldn't fit behind the bins were trying to hide behind Fag Ash Bill. 'C'mon, fellas,' I implored. 'What's your problem?’ A chorus of voices boomed out: 'You can't expect us to hang around when you're boring the hell out of us with your lecture.’ 'But why the need to hide?' I asked quitely. 'Because the boys are deeply ashamed of their actions,' answered our leader and mentor Andromeda Arkwright who had emerged from behind Fag Ash Bill. 'I'm surprised that you fled the pub as well, Andromeda,' I tutted. 'I did believe you were

a fair and honest lady.' 'I didn't flee deliberately!' Andromeda protested. 'I was listening to your speech when the others ran out. 'But somehow the Velcro on Ol' Red Eyes' slippers became entangled with my slingbacks and I was also dragged out, too.' Anyway, we all piled back into the pub and, as Dave the barman plonked down his cash till, Andromeda asked what I had meant by my original statement that people were attracted to me. It's like this,' I said. 'It is always me who is singled out in a big crowd. 'For instance, every time we cart off Ol' Red Eyes to the hospital and we're all hanging about in reception waiting to book in the old blighter, the nurses invariably think it's me who is being admitted.

'They ask me what I want for my dinner, do I need a bed pan and would I like to put on my new pyjamas. 'I feel like I'm a people magnet and it just repulses me.' At this point, I noticed a stranger in our pub midst -- a local policeman. He surveyed us pubsters and announced: 'I am investigating reports of a disturbance just now outside these premises involving several people and several dustbins.' Then he marched directly up to me, laid a hand on my shoulder and said: 'I suspect you are the ringleader. I must ask you to accompany me to the police station.' 'Me again!' I spluttered. 'Okay, I'll come with you, officer, but don't waste your time putting me in an identity parade. All the witnesses are bound to pick me.'

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

I needed grief counselling after watching the return of The Walking Dead on FOX UK on Monday night. The season opener is always an outstanding highlight for Dead fans, and we had a big cliffhanger from earlier in the year as to who would be clubbed to death at the hands of the show's biggest ever baddy, in the shape of Negan, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. He makes David Morrissey's old character of The Governor look like a playful pussy, as his sarcastic words (done almost with the charm of his investigator character in the final series of The Good Wife) combine with brutal violence in punishing Rick's crew, who are sat around in a semicircle as if they are about to sing a chorus of Kumbaya! No spoilers here, but facing the zombies would be a more enjoyable proposition, and this was a serious game-changing episode for a show that already has been renewed for next year. There surely has to be some big-time revenge to come, but along with my old favourites of Line of Duty and Happy Valley, this was one of the

Don't Cross This Guy!

drama moments of the year. In contrast, I bring you news about the biggest drama disappointment of the year, and it comes from the most unlikely source. After two outstanding series, The Fall, has turned into a total bore, and fortunately the final episode airs tonight on the back of last night´s penultimate instalment on BBC 2. Clearly there´s a suspicion that the Beeb are getting the last

two episodes out of the way, and I´m not surprised. A tense and clever drama has turned into a total bore with the plot slower than a drunken snail. The black humour has gone and the appeal of Gillian Anderson´s copper trying to track down Jamie Dornan´s psycho-killer made for unmissable viewing until he was captured (and shot) at the end of season two. We now have a plodding and meandering

story about whether or not he is mentally fit to stand trial on the basis of suffering amnesia, and I frankly don't care, though I will stick through to tonight's finale. So often we have viewers and critics crying out for more after a drama creates a buzz, but like we saw with the first half of series two of Broadchurch last year, it can end up being a real let down, which is what has happened with The Fall. A

brave producer and writer should have the guts to say that they've gone as far as they can with a story, and on reflection a 90-minute special should have been the way to go to wrap up The Fall, unless a real rabbit is pulled out of the hat tonight. It really was strange seeing somebody else sitting in Stephen Fry's chair as the new series of QI returned to BBC 2 last week. Fry made it his show, along with the double act with regular Alan Davies, but Sandi Toksvig has pulled off the impossible by doing it her way to keep QI fans like me happy. She's a good host, as listeners to her radio panel shows would verify, and she rightly does it her way, and is as sharp on her feet as Fry was. Perhaps she ought to slow down a wee bit in her delivery, but I suspect those may have been first show nerves, and she is a worthy successor to the great man. I was upset to see the physical state of Phil Collins on the Jonathan Ross Show last weekend, after his retirement a few years ago. He has talked openly (and charmingly) about his divorce and alcoholism that

nearly killed him after he called it quits from music, but sadly (for whatever reason), Ross skirted over the subject, which was a missed opportunity, especially as I could not understand until afterwards why he was so bloated. The good news was that Phil blurted out Against All Odds (somewhat appropriately) with great gusto at the end, and the magic was there. It was an occasion when a Parkinson-style format would have got to the heart of the matter with one of the nice guys of music, who must have been surprised that he wasn't quizzed further when he admitted that his alcohol binges meant that he had never heard of Adele. I could have bet a zillion euros that the X Factor Musical Jukebox would have spun to Fright Night for this Saturday's song theme ahead of Halloween. Lo and behold it surely did last Sunday, and the producers must think that all the viewers are complete idiots! To Jimmy Perry creator of Dad's Army, who died last weekend, just two simple words: - Thank you.

Best restaurants and bars in San Sebastián The Basque city of San Sebastián has so many great places to eat, it’s hard to narrow it down Bodegón Alejandro This is a bit like a dungeon, but in a good and glowing way. Its proximity to Mercado de la Bretxa made it the bolthole of choice for traders, a place to tuck in to cheap fish and txakoli (sparkling dry white wine), pork and cider after work. Now very much upgraded, chef Inaxio Valverde still makes good use of the market’s fresh, local and seasonal produce. A menu weighted towards fish in summer – cold, marinated anchovy lasagne with gazpacho cream (€15.50), grilled hake in citrus vinaigrette (€21) – leans towards game through winter. The

apple pie with rosemary trifle and lemon thyme icecream (€8.50) is a permanent fixture, along with the selection of local cheeses: Bidearte, Txapalak, Pikuñeta and Urdina (€11.50). Two main dining areas are dominated by an enormous luminous inky painting of the San Sebastián coast, the gleaming wooden tables are engraved with maps and quotes, and the lighting is conducive to a boozy lunch. The parents of multiMichelin-star chef Martín Berasategui once ran this restaurant, and it was here, at the tender age of 13, that he started learning his trade. • C/ Fermín Calbetón, 4,

Ganbara A buzzing spot, open to the street, with dark, moulddusted Iberian hams hanging from the wall, and a small bar piled high with artfully decorated pintxos that look like cakes in a fancy patisserie. In fact, they are created from fish, foie, mushrooms balanced on puff pastry and griddled bread, topped with decorative slithers of anchovies or guindillas (pickled chillis); and of course, they’re salty,

designed to be drunk with a sharp, fresh txakoli, the local wine. You could stand here – or at least try … it’s crowded – and stuff yourself, or retire to the intimate restaurant for some of the best hake in town. Try the moist, flaking kokotxas (the chins of hake or cod, €29.50), baby squid, elvers and big fish – sole, wild turbot, bream – sold by weight and charcoal-grilled for two to share. This is a popular after-hours hangout for chefs. C/ San Jeronimo 21, +34 943 42 25 75, ganbarajatetxea.com. Open 11am3pm, 6pm-11pm, closed Sunday nights, and all Monday.

Artichoke and roast garlic soup A delicious autumn soup to take on a ramble Take a little pot of cream with you, so you can add a final swirl once you’ve poured the soup into mugs. SERVES 6-7 INGREDIENTS 1 bulb garlic 1 tbsp olive oil 55g butter 1 leek, coarse outer leaves removed, trimmed and cut into rings ½ onion, finely chopped 750g Jerusalem artichokes 800ml chicken or vegetable stock

175ml milk 75ml cream METHOD Preheat the oven to 200C/gas mark 6. Remove most of the outer papery layers from the garlic head, keeping the head intact. Cut the top off the head (just over half a centimetre), to leave the flesh a little exposed. Set on a double layer of foil – big enough to form a 'tent’ around the garlic – and pour over the oil. Pull the foil

around the garlic and seal the parcel, leaving a little room around the bulb. Bake for 40 minutes or until completely tender. Roast it for longer for a more caramelised flavour. Melt the butter in a heavybased pan. Add the leek and onion and a splash of water. Cover and sweat while you clean the artichokes thoroughly. Chop into small chunks and add to the pan with the leeks and onions. Stir and season.

Cover again and sweat to soften the artichokes. Add the stock and cook until the mix is soft (about 15 minutes). Pour in the milk and leave to cool.

Take the garlic bulb from the foil. Squeeze the pulp from each clove into the soup. Purée the soup in batches in a blender. Heat it up on the hob, add

half the cream and taste (you may want to stop there). Adjust the seasoning. Pour the hot soup in a warmed thermos to transport.

Once the city’s abattoir, awarded an architectural prize in 1906, the S’Escorxador cultural centre had various reincarnations before its central building opened in June last year as the Mercado Gastronómico San Juan, Palma’s first gourmet food market. The £2m renovation of the 110-year-old dusky-pink building is stunning, from the high, beamed ceilings to the patterned tiles on the floors. But the real attraction is not the interior design, of course; it’s the food. Open 365 days a year, the market claims to serve 260 dishes and 361 wines through its 20 different vendors. It’s an assault course of tempta-

tions. When I visited, stallholders on one side were whipping up fideuá, a variation on paella made with noodles, and on the other there was a ready-made banquet of Basque-style pintxos. Some of the stalls were good without being fancy, such as the fresh fish counter by the entrance, where we pointed to our preferred creature in the chiller, then said whether we wanted it fried or grilled. But others served dishes worthy of high-end restaurants. The tasting platter (€5 for four) from the croqueta stall was my undisputed highlight. Crisp on the outside, smooth as fondant inside, they oozed

molten cheese, creamy cod, or puréed spinach with pine nuts. “You might want dessert,” said my local friend – who lives close by and knows the market’s secret corners – as we finished the last of the calamares and padrón peppers. No matter how full they are, no one with a sweet tooth could resist the adjoining patisserie. Styled like a separate tea room, it had glass cabinets packed with bite-size meringues, macaroons, fruit tarts and multicoloured eclairs. Be warned: if you or someone you travel with has a habit of posting pictures of food porn on social media, you could be here some time.

Amazing lamb with cockles

This is a simple spiced lamb mix, quickly put together and cooked stuffed in whole peppers in well under an hour.

Ingredients 350g/12oz minced lamb ½ tsp paprika ½ tsp chilli flakes 1 tsp cumin seeds, toasted and ground 1 tsp ground cinnamon 2 tomatoes, skinned, roughly chopped 1½ tbsp tomato paste 1 small onion, roughly chopped 30g/1oz pine nuts, toasted handful flatleaf parsley, chopped pinch sugar

2 large garlic cloves, finely chopped or grated ½ tsp salt 5 turns black peppermill 4 small or 2 large red peppers 1 tbsp white wine vinegar 3 tbsp olive oil To serve pinch cayenne pepper Method In a bowl, combine the lamb with the spices, tomatoes, tomato paste, onion, pine nuts, parsley (reserve a tablespoon for serving),

sugar, garlic, salt and pepper. Carefully cut the top off each pepper and scoop out the seeds. You might have to slice off the bottom horizontally so it can stand upright. Fill the peppers with the lamb mixture and put the top of the pepper back on. Pack the stuffed peppers into a flameproof casserole and pour over the vinegar and olive oil. Cover with a tight-fitting

lid or foil and cook over medium to low heat for about 20 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6. Bake the peppers, uncovered, for 15–20 minutes or until caramelised and golden-brown. Serve with the pan juices spooned over and scatter with the reserved parsley and a pinch of cayenne pepper. This dish is truly amazing, so sit back, and enjoy!

Lamb cooked with cockles is a traditional Welsh dish which makes a wonderfully comforting supper. Ingredients 600g/1lb 5oz cockles 300ml/10fl oz mediumsweet cider 3 lamb neck fillets 1 tsp thyme, finely chopped sea salt and freshly ground black pepper generous knob of butter 1 large onion, halved and finely sliced 100g/3½oz bacon lardons 1 tbsp cider vinegar 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley 1 tbsp celery leaves, chopped Method Preheat the oven to 170C/325F/Gas 3. Place the cockles in a colander and rinse under a cold running tap, shaking to wash off any grit or to break open any glued together with silt. Put the cockles and cider into a mediumsized heavy pan. Cover with the lid and steam for 2-3 minutes until the cockles have opened. Strain the cockles, discarding any that remain closed, then strain the

liquor again through a fine sieve to remove as much grit as possible. Season the lamb with the thyme, sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. In a very hot ovenproof pan, melt the butter and quickly brown the lamb all over then remove the meat from the pan and set it aside. Tip the onion and lardons into the same pan and cook over a moderate heat until the onions are translucent. Pour in the cider vinegar to deglaze the pan then return the meat to the and pour in the cockle liquor. Cover the pan with a lid, transfer it to the oven and cook for 45 minutes to one hour. Meanwhile, pick threequarters of the cockles from their shells, leaving the remainder in their shells. Add all the cockles to the lamb, warm through then season with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper and stir in the parsley and celery leaves. Slice the lamb onto warmed plates, ladle over the cockles and liquor and serve with boiled potatoes and Savoy cabbage.

Artist – Boney M. Track Title – Oceans of Fantasy. This week sees us return to Presenter Picks – and we are with Trev Massey´s choice. Oceans of Fantasy is the fourth studio album by Boney M. Released in September 1979, Oceans Of Fantasy became the second Boney M. album to top the UK charts. The title track was never released as a single and is a million miles away from some of the usual commercial Boney M hits such as Rasputin and Sunny and that’s why it stuck in my head as a fresh faced 11-year-old! A haunting sound musically and lyrically, it tells the story of a child’s imagination that is as endless as an ocean that allows the freedom to be whatever they want to be when they grow up. Boney M as you've possibly never heard them and definitely a hint of Earth Wind & Fire influence in there, hope you enjoy it as much as I did all those years ago! Perhaps you have a song that brings back happy memories or says thankyou to someone special or is just a great tune that you love to hear? Then send your own Record of the Week request to studio@tko.fm ... and include details of the track and what it means to you ... and next week ... It could be your special track played every day on TKO 91.9 & 90.8fm. Costa Blanca’s Biggest and best radio sation. Love Life ... Love Music... Love TKO!

THE CIRAT HALLOWEEN FESTIVAL, A WICKED EVENT

The Cirat Halloween Festival is one of the most popular ones in Castellón thanks to the spectacular set up that accompanies it. Cirat will give you the chills! The Street Festival Cultural Association of this town in Castellón will make your hair stand on end once again this year on All Hallows' Eve. This is the fifth consecutive year in which

Cirat celebrates the night of the living dead, and it has become one of the most popular events in the area due to the spectacular setup that accompanies it. Don't make any plans for the coming October 31st: from 6:30 pm, get ready to experience a night of terror with lit pumpkins, coffins, and the imps and demons that will take the town.

The mountainous landscapes that surround Cirat are as impressive as its Halloween festivities. Presided by the Mijares valley, the town coexists with an abrupt terrain lined with canyons and mountains with heights around 1,000 metres, as well as imposing pine forests with numerous springs and splendid hiking trails.

Near this small and charming town is the so-called Salto de la Novia, a spectacular 60-metre waterfall that pours its waters into a beautiful landscape in which the beautiful eroded shapes of the mountains, the water and the predominant green blend almost seamlessly. It´s a magical place to have a wicked time. Visit their website: www.cirat.es.

Parades and fireworks take the streets with various cultural manifestations such as concerts, theatre performances, recitals, workshops, music seminars, medieval theatre and extraordinary representations of El Misteri d'Elx (the Mystery Play of Elche). The MedievalFestival will kick off on October 20 with several commemorations, as this is a year of anniversaries. Homages to Shakespeare and Cervantes on the 400th anniversary of their deaths, as well as to Hieronymus Bosch and Ramon Llull, who left this world 500 and 700 years ago, respectively. We will also celebrate the 5th centenary of the arrival of the Order of Saint Clare to our city.

Moreover, Elche will celebrate the twelfth edition of Destápate, the tapas contest par excellence of this city. Residential property markets set to benefit from new global measurement standard

The International Property Measurement Standards (IPMS): Residential Buildings will provide a uniform global method to determine the size and dimension of floor space measures that can be used anywhere in the world. Currently, the way residential property is measured can vary significantly from one market to the next. As a consequence, owners, occupiers and investors in domestic property are often left confused or misinformed when it

comes to the reported floor space. This causes substantial issues when property is listed off-plan or bought by investors, but it has also led to disputes where rental calculations and service charges have relied on erroneous measurement information. Evidence of the variance in residential measurements is also highlighted in a new RICS Research report Residential Property Measurement Practice

(September 2016), written by Dr Lesley Hemphill and Dr Jasmine Lay Cheng Lim of Ulster University. The report investigated local measurement practice in locations across the world and compared the variance to using the new globally benchmarked IPMS: Residential Buildings. The difference in measurement for residential apartments, for example, varied by as much as 27% while measuring residential homes can vary by up to 58%.

Get the jab and don’t worry about kissing: how to avoid cold and flu As the nights draw in, catching a virus becomes more likely – but there are a few ways to steer clear of winter bugs. Here’s how you can keep yourself fighting fit

My boss said that if I can stand up, it’s not flu. Is this true?Your boss may not be objective or, indeed, correct. But the general point is that flu comes on more suddenly, feels worse and lasts longer than a cold. It causes a sudden high temperature, shivering, deep tiredness, weakness and aching muscles. Other symptoms are similar to those of a cold, such as a sore throat, a dry cough and

a runny nose. Kids can experience stomach aches, diarrhoea and very severe vomiting. I get that flu is nasty, but it passes. Why all the fuss? There are three types of flu: type A is the most dangerous and can cause worldwide outbreaks (pandemics); type B makes people feel ill; and type C is relatively mild. On average, flu kills 600 people a year in the UK; in bad

years, that figure can rise to thousands. Most people make a full recovery, but serious complications, such as pneumonia, can affect anyone, especially babies, pregnant women, those with long-term medical problems and older people whose immune systems are sometimes more impaired. Should I get a flu jab? There are a few ways to avoid flu: stay away from

other people; wage war against flu spreaders who leave their snotty tissues lying around; or get a jab. Two vaccines are available in the UK. The nasal flu vaccine is being rolled out gradually to all children over the age of two, while the inactivated flu vaccine is offered on the NHS to vulnerable adults (over-65s, pregnant women, those with serious medical conditions such as asthma, plus carehome residents, carers and healthcare professionals). If you are not in a vulnerable group, you can get the jab privately – many pharmacists and workplaces offer it for a small charge. Babies under six months old are too young to be vaccinated against flu, but pregnant women are encouraged to have the jab to protect themselves and their newborn

babies. Children are vaccinated partly to protect them, but also because they are walking virus reservoirs – they remain infectious for two weeks longer than adults and are more likely to pass on the virus. Can I get flu from the jab? No. It contains inactivated virus, so you may feel a bit shivery and your arm may ache, but it’s nothing that a couple of paracetamol won’t sort out. Allergic reactions are rare, but potentially dangerous. There was a small rise in reported cases of the neurological condition Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) among people who had a swine flu vaccine in 1976, but it’s not clear why. If there is an increased risk of GBS after flu vaccines, the chance is still only about one in a million. Is swine flu still a thing? Swine flu – so-called because pigs get a similar virus – was a relatively new strain of flu that caused a pandemic in 2009-10. It has been around for a while now, so lots of people have immunity and it’s part of the annual flu vaccine. It caused far fewer serious cases than expected, since many older people had been exposed to the strain in their youth and had retained some immunity. Is it true that the nasal spray for children doesn’t work? Recent data showed that the nasal flu vaccine wasn’t very effective from 2013-16 overall and seemed to give little or no added protection in the winter of 2015 in children aged 2 to 17. In the UK, the Joint Committee on Vaccination

and Immunisation has reviewed the evidence from the UK, the US, Finland and Canada; it says there is evidence of good overall effectiveness and that children should continue to use the common nasal spray. Why didn’t the flu vaccine work for me last year? Some years it will be more effective than others. Partly, it depends on you. One year, you may be in rude health and not mix much with ill people; another, you may be run down and unlucky. Another factor is the vaccine: every year, 143 national flu centres in 113 countries monitor current and emerging strains of flu virus and test existing vaccines. The results are passed on to six World Health Organisation centres (two in the US and one each in the UK, Australia, Japan and China), which meet to recommend the composition of the vaccine for the northern and southern hemispheres. It’s a good system, but sometimes the experts are flummoxed by a rogue strain of the flu virus. My partner has a stinking cold so should I decamp to the couch? Cold viruses are not as infectious as you might think. An infected person can spread their virus by coughing or sneezing close to you or touching a door handle with their virus-infested hands. But you can kiss and have sex with your infected partner without running a high risk of catching the virus, although why you would want to beats me.

MOST PEOPLE MAKE A FULL RECOVERY FROM FLU, BUT COMPLICATIONS CAN AFFECT ANYONE. Colds and flu may seem trivial, but for some they can be incapacitating or even lifethreatening. The terms cover a group of respiratory illnesses caused by three influenza viruses and more than 200 common-cold viruses. They are more prevalent in the winter because we huddle close to people who are harbouring the viruses, and because cold air affects the nose’s ability to fight infection. Here is everything you need to know to stay healthy this winter ...

Negative Emotions Increase Pain Scientists are just beginning to understand the deep connections that exist between the mind and body. Research shows that those suffering chronic pain will eventually develop depression, and depressed people seem to have a heightened awareness of pain than nondepressed people. Our nervous system is made up of different parts, and the part of the nervous system that transmits pain also responds to our emotions and is called the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system is responsible for controlling some of the unconscious processes that occur in the body such as breathing, heartbeat, and even sexual

arousal. In contrast, the other part of the nervous system controls the voluntary movement of the body.

The autonomic nervous system, which carries pain signals and emotions, also controls the secretion of

chemicals from hormonal glands and other glands, and these chemicals play a role in emotions and pain awareness. Recent studies have demonstrated that the autonomic nervous system is capable of differentiating between negative and positive emotions. Emotions are the language of the autonomic nervous system. Different emotions send different messages to the heart, brain, and the entire body. Negative emotions such as anger or anxiety increase heart rate and respiration and stimulates the production of hormones such as epinephrine which puts the body under alert. An alert

body is also under stress. Epinephrine will also reduce blood flow to many areas of the body and by doing so will encourage inflammation, pain, and stress. Reduced blood flow will increase blood pressure and promote the production of chemicals that increase inflammation and cause pain. Pain creates stress in the body leading to even more pain in a vicious cycle. Stress creates negative emotions such as anger and frustration and stress is a well-known contributor to chronic diseases including heart failure and depression. Stress is also known to promote inflammation which worsens pain. Major stresses such as bereavement,

divorce, and loss of a job are a concern. However, the main stressors in life are usually minor stresses such as paying a bill or noise from a neighbour. Positive emotions such as joy and gratitude stimulate the production of feel-good hormones such as serotonin which have a relaxing effect on the body. When the muscles are relaxed, blood flow increases which encourage the rate of healing and reduces inflammation and pain. Serotonin also inhibits the production of chemicals that cause inflammation and pain. For A Full body Diagnostic Scan Call MedB Diagnostics – 965071745, 966189074, www.medb.es.

If the booze doesn’t get you, crisps will Franks Smith from Aspatria, Cumbria, responded to a question raised on the internet about alcohol and health. As a retired brewer I can confirm that all alcoholic beverages are to a degree fattening. Alcohol is produced during fermentation by yeast breaking down short chain carbohydrates (primarily glucose) to produce ethyl alcohol and carbon dioxide. At the end of fermentation there is always

a residue of carbohydrate carried forward to the final product. This together with the complex degradation of alcohol by the liver to produce further carbohydrate gives the beverage its high calorific content. I am underwent alcoholfree October and can provide evidence of the above. In three weeks of no alcohol and eating the same amount as before I have lost 10lbs in weight. It is not, as my wife believes, an indication

that I normally consume far more than 21 units of alcohol a week. Roll on 1 November. Meanwhile, Colin Purdom also responded by saying that alcohol contains no calories. The trouble is though, my glass of wine tends to lead to “You know some cheese and biscuits would go nicely now” followed by “Mmm think I’ll just

finish off that bag of crisps from last night”; and then,

“Those two sweet biscuits left at the bottom of the pack

would finish things off perfectly”. So I reckon my glass of wine “contains” at least 300 calories. Finally, Peter Hanson from Exeter says that alcohol does make you fat, but not directly. The liver detoxifies it and what is left is used as a fuel for metabolism in the body. This displaces the fat in food which would otherwise be used to fuel metabolism, so that is stored and you get fat. Pity really.

VW California Ocean campervan review: ‘This van is amazing’ It was like being an incredibly spoilt womanchild with a doll’s house The fundamental question about a car (who would buy this, ahead of any other car?) is already answered by the VW California Ocean. This is for people who want to camp in their van. All those existential questions, like “If you want a shower and a cooker and a kettle and a sofa and a bed, why not stay in a building instead?” we just have to park, which will be easier to park than the California. Ours is not to interrogate camping in principle: only in

practice. Especially if you’re eight, but even when you’re 43, the sudden acres of space at the push of buttons blow your mind. The controls are very intuitive, and the showstopper is the roof: make sure the ignition is on, the van is not moving (that bit is crucial), the windows are open, the tap is not running (just because it makes a distracting noise), you are not having a shower, the side door is open (unless you listened to

me about the windows) and press the central button. The roof pops open like a clam shell. The top bed is gigantic. A small amount of jigging joins the passenger seats into a bench behind and a second double bed emerges. They are actually not as large as I thought: I thought I could sleep on the bottom with two children. When this didn’t work, it set in train an epic, childhood-defining row

over which kid I would choose, which ended with me sulking in the driver’s seat like a dad in a 1960s cartoon strip. But my God, it is amazing. You could load four adults horizontally into a vehicle that isn’t much more cumbersome than a Zafira. The drive is fine; you’re definitely aware of hoisting about more than an average load, but it has plenty of acceleration.

The cornering has that distinctive white-knuckle frisson of a vehicle with high sides and a not particularly large engine, but you’re in a mobile home and should not be bouncing all over the road anyway. Far, far more delightful than driving the thing is playing with its accessories. Pretty well everything turns into something else: the driver and front passenger’s

seats, for instance, swivel 45 degrees, to become seats at a weird angle. We spent a mind-bending amount of time just playing; it was like being an incredibly spoilt womanchild with a doll’s house. This van is amazing. The only thing I don’t know is whether or not all recreational vehicles are this amazing; if they are, modern life is incredible.

Peugeot 2008 car review: ‘The panoramic roof was a booby trap’ It has a lot of SUV styling, a beefy, bullish exterior, but is in fact quite underpowered The Peugeot 2008 is like a sleek-looking person dressed in a cashmere polo neck. A smidge unusual, with a trace of charisma; you don’t know whether you want to hug it or smell it. It has a very open view, thanks to the wide windscreen and the determined addition of windows where you didn’t expect them (little triangular ones in front of the wing mirror, a panoramic sunroof). I inferred a pure, unadulterated pride in the French countryside. It turned out the visibility was poor – too many struts between panes of glass – and the panoramic roof was a booby trap. (It looked as though it should open, but was, in fact, only decorative; in the course of

pushing every button to find that out, I accidentally called Peugeot’s roadside emergency unit. This is an additional fea-

ture costing £250, when surely any normal person would pay £250 not to have it.)

It has a lot of SUV styling, a beefy, bullish exterior, but is quite underpowered,

whiny in first and second, a bit surprised to have anything asked of it in third and fourth, with no acceleration at all in fifth and sixth. The gearshift is imprecise, and the steering is neurotic in its overreaction. A motorcyclist told me off for floating all over the road. I tried to engage her in my predicament, explain how driving a new car is one thing, but driving a car that isn’t like all the other cars, something else entirely; but she was off. I reluctantly conclude that the open road is like the Labour party, and

the people who claim to want a debate just want to shout at you, then for you to eat their dust. The sense that you don’t have as much control as you thought you had is exacerbated by the fact that the brakes ain’t all that: a nudge that would have slowed most other cars ruffled no hair on this creature’s head. One of the car’s younger users – since he’s eight, this view is qua passenger only – said there were too many features and not enough stuff. I know what he means by features – the mesh on the seats, the padded square that stood for a

handbrake, the oddment stowage – but I never got to the bottom of what he meant by stuff. I’m just passing it on. The satnav made some devilishly silly decisions, but the Apple CarPlay was fabulous. If you want a gadget that will take dictation and text it to people, while finding your chapter in an audiobook and putting your incoming calls on automatic speaker, and it can drive, then this is your moment. The Stats Price £20,565 Top speed 119mph Acceleration 0-62mph in 9.6 seconds Combined fuel consumption 76.3mpg CO2 emissions 96g/km Eco rating 9/10 Cool rating 6/1.

BlueMoon Solutions is the computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca. BlueMoon Solutions come to you at home or work, our personal service covers from Alicante to Pilar de la Horadada.

Richard moved to Spain ten years ago having left his management background behind in the UK and decided to use his IT skills to help home users and small businesses with their PC problems. Now a relaxed 'computer man' he is out and about in the Spanish sun every day, making house and shop calls and using his vast experience and qualifications to sort out the problem there and then. Computers are his hobby as well as his work so don’t be surprised to get an answer to your email in the early hours!

ADVICE: Bob was having problems hearing people with ADVICE: John wanted to know why his new battery on Skype. his new laptop only charged to 80 percent.

Q A

Dear Richard, I have a problem that I hope you can help me with. Every time my daughter rings me from the UK using Skype I cannot hear her. She tells me by email that she can hear m, and I can see her video but can’t hear a word. Is there a problem with my speakers?

Hi Bob, it’s not immediately clear from your email whether there is a problem with your speakers or not, however I suspect not. There is an easy way to check – does your computer make a noise when it does anything else? Can you hear the music if you put a CD into it? If it is only silent in Skype then the problem is with Skype, if it’s always silent, then yes, it could be something else. Let’s assume that this problem is related to Skype, there are a couple of things that you can do. Firstly try dialling the Skype call test service, you can do this by adding the contact “echo123”, you may find that its already in your contact list. When you call the test service, if you cannot hear anything then the problem is likely to be related to your Skype set up, if you can hear the test service then the problem is more likely to be related to your daughter’s Skype set up, particularly her microphone settings. If you discover that it is in fact your Skype that’s at fault, then you should check the settings in your Skype by clicking on Tools, Options, Audio Settings and changing the items displayed in the speakers section. Update from Bob: Fantastic, great thanks, Richard. I had 3 different options in the speakers section, when I selected the right one I could hear fine!

Q A

Hi Richard. I have just bought a new battery for my laptop and I´ve left it plugged in, charging for 24 hours as the instructions say, however, the maximum charge that Windows is reporting is 80% - is this normal?

Hi John, I´ve done a bit of research for you and I wasn’t actually aware of this myself but it seems some laptops have a “Battery Life Extender” service that purposely sets the maximum battery charge level to 80 percent. You can view this setting by clicking on the option in the Power Management section of the Windows Control Panel.

Top tennis ace Rafa Nadal has opened a tennis academy on Mallorca named after him, and funded by sponsorship from Telefonica. The high-performance centre combines tennis with an American-style school, so that students can pursue

their professional tennis aspirations without having to neglect their academic studies. “My future is here,” said Nadal. “I don’t imagine myself living away from Mallorca. The sport is my passion and creating this tennis academy is the most important part. You can also play lots of different sports here. I believe this is a centre that kids need. I will be very involved. “The team of coaches here [directed by Toni Nadal] have a lot of experience in our professional sport and, also, the knowledge to teach the kids that train at the academy. I’d like to make this a centre of tennis for everyone around the world.” For the launch, Nadal was joined by Roger Federer, who was full of praise for his on-court rival's project: “I see his D.N.A. all around, and that’s an incredible bonus. It’s a special place. His work ethic is right up

there at the top, and he’ll be able to share his experiences. It’s very exciting… I’m proud to have been here today.” “I hope the kids are going to learn from this great man. He's one of the greatest we've ever had. His attitude speaks for itself. I hope it's going to be a wonderful academy,” Federer said. “One thing's for sure, I know where I'm going to send my kids if they want to learn tennis. I'm going to send them right here!” ATP Executive Chairman & President Chris Kermode also attended the event alongside ITF President David Haggerty, Wimbledon Chairman Phillip Brook, David Brewer, Director, Pro Circuit and US Open Referee; and José María Álvarez-Pallete, Chairman & CEO of Telefónica. Kermode said, “I’d like to congratulate Rafa and all those involved on this special day for the opening of

the Rafa Nadal Academy. The facility is truly impressive, and it’s been an honour to be invited here for this landmark occasion. Rafa has an incredible passion for our sport, and this Academy is a further reflection of that. On behalf of the ATP, I’d like to wish the Academy the very best for a successful future.” The 24,000-square metres academy is equipped with the latest technology, including supervised halls of residence exclusively for students, an American International School for children aged 10 to 18 years of age, and a clinic specialising in sports medicine, physiotherapy and nutrition. There are also 26 indoor and outdoor tennis courts, a fitness centre, two swimming pools (indoor and outdoor), mini-football pitches, three regulation multisport courts, 10 padel tennis courts, a restaurant and café bar, pro shop and gardens.

34-24 win at Albacete. In the women’s division, the San Javier Squalos (pictured in blue) ran out 27-12 victors at Lorca.

Friday 28th October 2016

Ivie Davies 1941-2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the death of The Courier's golf columnist, Ivie Davies, who lost his battle against pancreatic cancer on Thursday October 20th. He was a totally decent and fun gentleman as an outpouring of messages from the local golfing fraternity via social media sites has reflected over the last week. Needless to say, Ivie had a wonderful knowledge of golf at all levels, and shared his enthusiasm and

passion for the sport within the Costa Blanca media for 20 years, as well as getting involved in golf on a practical level here in Spain. Ivie lived with his wife Diana on the El Raso urbanisation in Guardamar and knew the area well since the early eighties, before settling down fulltime on the Costa Blanca in 1996, after leaving Reading in Berkshire, with Ivie going into business selling and servicing golf buggies

for the Ez Go company. He was one of the founders of the Vega Baja Golf League some 16 years ago, which ended up becoming the largest golf society-based league in Spain, and one of the biggest in Europe. He was secretary right until his death last week. Ivie was also the PGA European Pro Tour's Spanish ambassador, as he helped to organise the competition finals at Mosa Trajectum in Murcia in

2004, and was then instrumental to bringing the event over to the Intercontinental Mar Menor golf resort in 2011, which were screened live by Sky Sports. Ivie was secretary of Torrevieja Golf Club for nine years, and he organised golf tournaments and competitions as well as successfully captaining teams in Ryder Cup-style tournaments, as well as various Inter Society and Inter League competi-

tions,. His schedule was a busy one and the word "retirement" was not on his lips. He built up a great relationship with players past and present, as well as with names from the British showbiz world that would pop over to the area for a spot of golf, and end up being interviewed by Ivie. One of his best contacts was the famous cigarsmoking Spanish character Miguel Angel Jimenez, who Ivie got to come over

to Quesada's La Marquesa course back in May for a pro-am charity event that raised over eight thousand euros for three beneficiaries that were full of praise for all the effort that Ivie put in. The Courier would like to pass on sincere condolences to Ivie's wife Diana, and the rest of his family. His funeral took place in Rojales on Tuesday afternoon, which was followed by a celebration of his life at AJ's Bar, El Raso.

Padraig’s Drought Ends

Padraig Harrington claimed his first European Tour title in over eight years as he snatched a thrilling one-shot victory over Andy Sullivan at the Portugal Masters on Sunday. Harrington scrambled a remarkable par at the 72nd hole to complete a flawless six-under 65 for a winning

score of 23 under par at the Victoria Club de Golfe, his first Tour win since lifting the third of his three major titles at the PGA Championship in 2008. Sullivan put up a stout defence of his title as he also closed with a bogeyfree 65, while "retired" Dane Anders Hansen could not

build on a run of three straight birdies on the front nine, carding 12 pars in a row for a 69 and a share of third with Mikko Korhonen. Harrington got off to a steady start while Sullivan produced the fireworks in the group ahead, the Ryder Cup star making birdies at four of the first five holes to

hit the front before Hansen regained his overnight lead with birdies at the fourth, fifth and sixth. But while the birdies dried up for Sullivan and Hansen, Harrington revived his challenge with a sublime holeout from a greenside bunker for an unlikely birdie at the 11th, and he was soon leading outright following further gains at two of the next three holes. Sullivan broke a run of six straight pars with a birdie at the 12th, and he two-putted for another at the long 17th before making a big error at the last, his approach from the middle of the fairway sailing over the green and nestling in the rear rough. But a solid chip and a confident five-foot putt salvaged his four and set the clubhouse target at 22 under, while Harrington produced a superb pitch to tap-in range on the 17th moments later to take a one-stroke advantage down the final fairway. A play-off looked on the cards when Harrington

pushed his drive into the right rough and then carved his second towards the grandstands, leaving him a tough up-and-down from a tricky lie in the thick, lush rough to the right of the green. However, the 45-year-old clipped a magnificent chip to four feet and rattled in the winning putt to secure his

first win since his shock Honda Classic triumph in Florida in March last year. Sullivan had to be content with his best finish since the Omega Dubai Desert Classic back in February, while Hansen settled for joint third and finished the week with just two bogeys over the tournament in only his fifth start of the season.

Derby Spoils Shared

Monte's Throw Away FB REDOVAN "A" 2 CD MONTESINOS 2

ORIHUELA CF 1 CD ALMORADI 1 The first derby meeting between the two sides in the regional third division on Sunday at the Los Arcos ground was a point more appreciated by Almoradi as opposed to Orihuela who would have felt that they should have won this encounter. A good crowd of 900 spectators saw Orihuela took the early initiative as

they controlled the match, with Rubén Moreno missing a good opportunity, before the home side took the lead through Nacho Porcar in the 29th minute. His powerful strike from the edge of the area gave Adrián no chance in the Almoradi goal. The visitors took a bolder approach in the second half, after being in defensive mode in the first period, and

in an expected twist (as is so often the case), the exOrihuela player, Del Cueto, got the equaliser in the 65th minute, as his shot went in off the post. He kept his celebrations to a minimum as a sign of respect to his former club, who pressed hard for a winner with a long range strike from Nico hitting the crossbar. Almoradi have a tough

Brave Torry Lose UD ALZIRA 2 CD TORREVIEJA 1

Despite lying at the foot of the regional third division, Torrevieja gave a really spirited account of themselves away to a good Alzira side, and deserved more from Sunday’s encounter. Torry’s off-the-pitch problems were all to see as they only travelled to Alzira with a 14 man squad and gave a substitute debut to youth goalkeeper Eneko…. as a forward in the last five minutes, where he actually got a chance to grab

a late winner. Torry took the lead after just four minutes as a sweeping move delivered the ball to the non-stop Lewis Allen on the left wing who picked out the advancing Pastor in the middle, who in turn cracked the ball first time into the roof of the net. Torry remained resolute throughout the first half with 18-year-old Louis Booker giving a fine midfield performance, whilst Hugo won the aerial battles and debutant Baza had a fine debut at the heart of the defence. Alzira are a good side and they came out looking like a different team in the second half. They bossed the midfield and Torry legs tired as their opponents began to batter them. Booker was badly fouled when he courageously won a ball in midfield to set up a Torry attack and he had to be replaced with Matheus.

Alzira had missed a penalty when Gisbert shot over the bar in the first half, but they did better second time round in the 84th minute when Carrasco was deemed to have fouled in the area from a corner, with Luis Garcia converting the penalty. As Alzira bombed forward for the winner, they left themselves exposed at the back and twice Torry almost snatched the points, with two superb saves from Ovejero to keep the score level. Then in the last minute, a quick break from Alzira saw Luis Garcia rifle another into the Torry net to steal all three points. This really was a determined Torry performance from every player, and now they have a crucial match away tomorrow (Saturday) away to Segorbe, who are just above them in the table in a proverbial six-pointer clash.

Four Is The Number CD THADER 1 ALICANTE UNIVERSITY 0

Thader notched up their fourth straight win in Preferente Group Four, which keeps them fourth in the table, and four points behind the leaders Villajoyosa. It was another one-nil victory for the Rojales side as Quino popped up in the 75th minute to give the 500-plus

crowd something to shout about. Thader had the bulk of the play and had the best of the scoring chances until their strike with 15 minutes remaining. They're now away to La Nucia this weekend, who are just above the relegation area.

home encounter this weekend against the league leaders Olympic, whilst Orihuela have an equally testing away trip to thirdplaced Villarreal. Elsewhere last weekend, Elche Ilicitano drew two-two at Castellon, and entertain Bunol this weekend. Crevillente who had a blank weekend are at home to second-placed Novelda.

Monte were three points down before a single kick in last Sunday's encounter after their Orihuela win 12 days ago was reversed due to playing an unregistered player, Fernando, though the club beg to differ and have appealed against the ruling. They got the perfect start on Sunday when in the fifth minute, Carlos skipped through the Redovan defence to score. Monte continued to attack and found the Redovan keeper in top form, before German doubled Monte's lead inside the half hour, and then Aureu missed a sitter within the box as he struck the ball well over the crossbar when it was surely easier to score. That was a turning point as in the 37th minute, Redovan pulled one back from the penalty spot, and then after the re-start, the home side were on level terms after some sloppy Monte defending. The match was officiated

by one of the worst referees ever seen at this level of football, with both sides and their managers frustrated by a stream of incorrect decisions like awarding throw-ins to the wrong side on a regular basis. Monte favourite Vaz came on for the second half and immediately caused problems for Redovan, but the referee had the final inept word of the game when in the closing seconds, a Monte shot hit the Redovan crossbar in a Geoff Hurst 1966 moment, and spun down apparently over the goal-line. The match official begged to differ and it finished in a draw, which Monte should have sealed up as a victory in the first half. CD Montesinos now entertain Atletico Orihuela this Sunday with a 4.30pm kickoff. CD Benijofar drew at Atletico last weekend, with Berni getting the equaliser in the 83rd minute. Benijofar are at home to Sporting Orihuela this weekend.

Real's Late Show REAL MADRID 2 ATHLETIC BILBAO 1

Substitute Alvaro Morata's late goal helped Real beat Bilbao at the Bernabeu on Sunday night, a result that took Zinedine Zidane's side to the top of La Liga. Madrid opened the scoring after just seven minutes through Karim Benzema's close-range strike, only for Sabin to equalise for the visitors 20 minutes later. However, Real claimed all three points after Morata converted Gareth Bale's cross at the second attempt to move above Sevilla at the top of the table after just nine games of the current 2016/17 La Liga season. Cristiano Ronaldo was jeered during the match, after failing to score, even though the result returned Zinedine Zidane side to the Premiera divison table summit. Zidane said: "I don't understand the jeers but at the same time, I was also jeered and it can happen. The public demands a lot from the players and the Bernabeu is special. Cristiano knows that and is not concerned by it." Real are a point clear of second-placed Sevilla, and go to mid-table Alaves this Saturday afternoon.

Spanish Penalty The Spanish FA (RFEF) has been fined 220 thousand Swiss francs (220 thousand euros) by FIFA's Disciplinary Committee for allowing Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid to register international players under the age of 18. Real and Atletico have already been handed transfer bans, which are due to cover both transfer windows in 2017, after FIFA ruled that they had broken its regulations regarding the international transfers of players aged under16 on multiple occasions. Both clubs are now appealing with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The RFEF has now been fined for its role in allowing Atletico and Madrid to bring in young players from outside Spain, and register them to play in official competition, in contravention of FIFA rules.

Lionesses Roar

Last Gasp Messi VALENCIA 2 BARCELONA 3

Lionel Messi scored a last-minute penalty to give Barca a dramatic win at the Mestalla last Saturday. Messi opened the scoring in the first half with a fine low effort for the visitors, who lost captain Andres Iniesta to a knee injury after just 10 minutes, which will keep him out of action for up to eight weeks. On-loan Barcelona striker Munir El Haddadi hit a low strike past Marc-Andre ter Stegen soon after the break, before fellow forward Rodrigo equalised after running onto a lofted pass from former Manchester United winger Nani. Luis Suarez finished well to bring the champions level after Diego Alves could only push Ivan Rakitic's header straight into his path, before Messi's late penalty won it in dramatic fashion - prompting some home fans to throw objects in the direction of Barca's players, with Neymar appearing to be hit by a water bottle. Barcelona, who are two points behind leaders Real Madrid, have a home banker tomorrow evening when they entertain bottom club Granada who are winless this season and have just three points to their name.

Honours Even ELCHE 1 CORDOBA 1

An entertaining game last Saturday saw Cordoba's Polish goalkeeper Pawel Kieszek keep Elche at bay, and frustratingly for their home supporters, produce a fourth consecutive match without a win for the Ilicitanos at the Martinez Valero stadium. Nino and Pedro had two chances each saved by Kieszek during the match, but Elche took the lead five minutes from the interval courtesy of a Edu Albácar free kick which found the unmarked Pelegrin at the back post to score. The contest was fairly even during the second half as the Andalucian side levelled things up from a Piovaccari header in the 68th minute, and Nino had the last best chance for the Ilicitanos which produced a Kieszek stop. Elche are seventh in the Segunda division table, and travel to fourth-placed Sevilla 2nds this Sunday lunchtime.

And The Winner Is……

Atletico Madrid dominated the 2015/16 La Liga awards on Monday evening with Barcelona and Real Madrid also among the victors. The Champions League runners-up were the big winners during the star-studded ceremony in Valencia, winning five of the nine categories. Team captains voted for the top players in each position, while a data-analysis system generated the best player award. The accolades were bizarrely thrown at Atletico despite the fact that Barcelona took the La Liga title last season, ahead of Real Madrid and Atletico, with Barca coach Luis Enrique not even nominated for the best coach award, with Barcelona's players choosing to snub the event. Asked about not being a finalist, the 46-year-old joked about his standing among the league's coaches. "That's a very good question. I believe I'm amongst the 20 best coaches," Luis Enrique said. "Because there are only 20 coaches in the Primera Division." The Blaugrana coach played down the importance of the awards gala, saying the focus needed to be elsewhere. He said: "I didn't have an invitation but, still, you already know I don't normally attend these kinds of events.” Star forward Antoine Griezmann was named as Best Player of the season and picked up the Fans' Five Star Player award, while Atletico manager Diego Simeone won the Best Coach category. Diego Godin ended Sergio Ramos' dominance as Best Defender to pick up the award after the Real Madrid captain had won in each of the last four years. Jan Oblak was also named as Best Goalkeeper and is the second time an Atletico keeper has taken home the award after Thibaut Courtois in the 2012/13 season. Barcelona took two of the remaining categories, with Lionel Messi named as Best Striker - despite scoring fewer goals than Luis Suarez and Cristiano Ronaldo last season - but his Barca team-mate Suarez did pick up the La Liga World Player accolade. Real Madrid were victorious in the Best Midfielder category as Luka Modric was crowned the winner, while Marco Asensio who spent last season on loan at Espanyol - was named as Best Newcomer.

La Liga Rules This Year’s Ballon d’Or

La Liga has dominated this year’s Ballon d'Or nominees, boasting almost twice as many as their nearest league rivals. The Spanish top flight has 13 representatives, beating the Premier League's eight, Bundesliga with five, Serie A's three and Portugal's Primeira Liga sole nod. Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Luis Suarez, Gareth Bale, Antoine Griezmann, Diego Godin, Andres Iniesta, Koke, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Pepe and Sergio Ramos make up La Liga's nominees.

Southgate Is A Credible Candidate England captain Steph Houghton netted a fine free-kick as the Lionesses beat Spain 2-1 in a friendly at Guadalajara’s Estadio Municipal Pedro Escartin on Tuesday. As part of preparations for the Euro 2017 finals, Mark Sampson’s team were playing a friendly double-header against two European rivals, which started with a 0-0 draw against France in Doncaster. Karen Carney’s deflected cross put England ahead on 14 minutes.

Gareth Southgate couldn’t possibly have come up with a better start for his tenure in the Sam-less hot seat, writes JOHN MCGREGOR. It’s Malta at Wembley on Saturday in the World Cup qualifiers and this looks like a real gift from the Gods for our Gareth. If a team of English professionals who play at the Premier League level cannot beat a team from a country of 420,000, well… Oh, hang on a mo, what about Iceland (shud-

der) – surely lightning can’t strike twice? On paper, Gareth’s guys should murder modest Malta and majestically march on to slay Slovenia on Tuesday for the replay of England’s last-laugh Lallana win last month. Gareth Southgate could be appointed England's next permanent manager even if they lose their next two games, according to FA chief executive Martin Glenn. Southgate was placed in

caretaker charge of the national team for four games last month following the departure of Sam Allardyce and his first two matches have yielded a win and a draw. England now have two home games, a World Cup Qualifier against Scotland on November 11 followed by a friendly with Spain four days later, and even if both ended in defeat, Southgate would still be considered as Allardyce's long term successor.

Among a number of bookmakers, Southgate is the front runner to be offered the post permanently but Glenn refused to be drawn on the matter. He said "I don't know if he's favourite. I'm not going to comment on bookmakers' odd. "He's got the team for four games, up until the Spain game in mid-November. After that we don't have a game until March against Germany.

A Fascinating Primera

Barclays Premier League Saturday 29 October

La Liga's annual awards, as featured on the opposite page, brought a few gasps from the Barcelona fraternity as coach Luis Enrique was "snubbed" as he surprisingly failed to make the short list for Coach of the Year, but the fact that Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone won the whole shooting match should hardly come as a shock. Remember that the votes are cast by the captains from all of the Primera Division clubs, and they should know a thing or two, namely that on a shoestring budget, compared to the mega-bucks shelled out by Real Madrid and Barcelona, the ex-Argentine player has done wonders. Still a spring chicken now at the age of 46, he was capped 100 times for his country, including playing in three World Cups, and then cut his teeth managing five clubs in Argentina, before Atletico took a punt on him five years ago. His stay there has seen him net La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Europa League, as well as two Champions League final defeats that still hurt Atletico fans, as they lost twice to deadly city rivals Real, one of those defeats being with just seconds remaining before Godin's injury-time header tore up the script for an Atletico dream night. Simeone's record in Spain is outstanding, and despite overtures from around Europe, he has so far stayed loyal to Atletico, but he is getting itchy, making the announcement last month that he's going to have a look round in 2018 as a free agent, by taking an almost unheard of decision to cut two years off from his contractual term with the club. Arsenal are said to be sniffing around, but the smart money is on Simeone looking towards Serie A in Italy, where he had successful times as a player with Inter and Lazio, and come 2018, he would have spent seven seasons at Atletico, almost a lifetime in terms of La Liga management. Four of five years at another club, and then a spell as Argentine national manager must be the way that Simeone is mapping out his future, and for most neutral observers of La Liga, let's hope that he wins at least a couple more pieces of silverware. That elusive Champions League crown would be nice!

Real Slaughter CULTURAL LEONESA 1 REAL MADRID 7

Real Madrid thrashed third-tier Cultural Leonesa in the first leg of the Copa del Rey round-of-32 tie on Wednesday as they rested Ronaldo, Bale and Benzema. They took the lead with an own goal by ex-West Brom defender Gianni Zuiverloon, with two goals each from Asensio and Morata, making them Real's joint top scorers this season with five. Nacho scored a stunning flying volley to make it 6-0, with Benja pulling one back before Mariano's late strike. The second leg at the Bernabeu is on Wednesday, November 30th. Real played their first leg a month before everyone else because of their involvement in the Fifa World Club Cup in December, as did Barcelona last season.

Sunday 30 October 14:30 Everton v West Ham United 17:00 Southampton v Chelsea Real Madrid and Barcelona have always treated Atletico Madrid as an unwelcome gate-crasher at their annual Primera party, as if it’s some kind of divine right that one of them would get the title come the spring. Atletico have shown themselves to be adept party-poopers, but something really strange is happening in the first quarter of the season, as two other sides have muscled in to make things truly interesting, helped by Real and Barca's inconsistencies (both teams also specialising in late goals to pull something out of the fire). Three points separate the top five teams, with Sevilla (who beat Atletico at the weekend) and Villarreal being in the mix. Sevilla are just a point behind leaders Real Madrid, and their start has perhaps come as a surprise to some observers after their successful Europa League winning boss, Unai Emery, went for pastures new to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer. So, in copying the Atletico Madrid formula, Sevilla went down the Argentine route as well, and brought in Alf Ramseylookalike, Jorge Sampaoli to take over, having masterminded Chile to Copa America final success over Argentina last year. One of his stars has been Manchester City discard Sami Nasri, with Sevilla losing just one of their nine matches so far, meaning that they are going to be

there or thereabouts come the final shakedown. As for Villarreal, a familiar figure is in charge, namely ex-Elche boss Fran Escriba (pictured earlier this season greeting Sampaoli), after an unhappy spell at Getafe saw him sacked, and the side relegated, and now floundering below Elche in the Segunda. Escriba performed miracles at Elche in the Primera and the second season there saw him (talking of awards as I was earlier) win the best coach award in the division, voted for by his fellow managers. Then things turned double pear-shaped as we know all too well for Elche, but now Escriba has conjured up the unlikely sight of Villarreal being just two points off the top of the table, and are yet to be beaten! The northern Valencia region side have no big-name players and have a mixture of youngsters that have come up from academy ranks, along with some shrewd foreign signings....almost the old Elche formula! It'll be interesting to see if Escriba, still smarting from what happened at Getafe, can keep his side's unlikely early-season form going through the winter. There'll be many people who hope so, though I suspect that Sampaoli at Sevilla may be the one that might genuinely upset the Primera applecart in what is looking like the best and most wide-open contest for years.

JOSE CHARGE Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has been charged by the Football Association for claiming it would be "difficult" for referee Anthony Taylor to officiate their game with Liverpool. Mourinho added appointing Taylor for the October 17th match had put "pressure" on the Manchesterbased official. Managers are not supposed to speak about referees prior to matches, and the United manager has until Monday to respond to a charge of improper conduct and bringing the game into disrepute.

GUNNERS AIM FOR THE TOP It’s Moyes versus Wenger at the Stadium of Light this Saturday lunchtime (1.30 pm), with Sunderland and Arsenal at opposite ends of the Premier League table, writes ALEX TRELINSKI. The Black Cats prop up the Premier, having made the worst start to a Premier League season by any team this century, losing seven of their first nine games, whilst Arsenal, even with a draw, will go top for a couple of hours. Sunderland haven't beaten second-placed Arsenal in the league since November 2009, when Darren Bent scored the only goal of the game. The omens are simply awful for the winless North-Easterners with just two points to show in the current campaign and the potential of a pre-Halloween frightener for their long-suffering fans. It’s gone from bad to worse for Moyes, as he got sent off in the League Cup defeat at the Saints on Wednesday night for giving some verbal to the fourth official. The referee must have been echoing the thoughts of Sunderland supporters who would like a more permanent dismissal. Hey, Big Sam is looking for work again! A side note on Moyes. He’s 14 years younger than Arsene Wenger, but looks 10 years older than the Frenchman. The joys of management pressure have taken their toll. It’s not the most exciting of Premier fixture lists this weekend, but the top four are all on the road, which in terms of sheer probability means that somebody is bound to slip up somewhere! Manchester City are still licking their wounds over losing to United in the League Cup, and the table-toppers have a potential banana skin to avoid on their trip to Pulis-run West Bromwich Albion. Third-placed Liverpool also have a trip not to relish, as they go to always tricky Crystal Palace, whilst fourth-inthe-table Chelsea have a Sunday date at Southampton.

ENGLAND CHANGES England spinner Zafar Ansari was scheduled to make his Test debut against Bangladesh in Dhaka earlier this morning, with pace bowler Steven Finn replacing Stuart Broad. Slow-left-armer Ansari, 24, was selected instead of his Surrey teammate Gareth Batty, who took 4-116 in England's 22-run win in the first Test. England will play three spinners - Ansari, Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid. Broad has been rested for the match, so the recalled Finn has joined Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes in the seam attack. Ansari missed the chance to make his England debut in 2015 after dislocating his left thumb, and injured the thumb again in May this year. Off-spinner Batty, 39, featured in his first Test since 2005 when he was selected for the opening game in Chittagong - setting a new world record after missing England's 142 intervening Tests.

AUTUMN TESTS RECALL Northampton flanker Tom Wood has been recalled to the England squad for the autumn internationals. Coach Eddie Jones had left out Wood, 29, since taking charge after the 2015 World Cup, but picks him for the first time amid a backrow injury crisis. Wood, who has 42 caps, is part of a 33-man squad

named for the four Tests. The uncapped trio of Sale full-back Mike Haley, Saracens fly-half Alex Lozowski and Bath lock Charlie Ewels are also included. Australian Jones said he had been in touch with Wood after leaving him out back in January and had been impressed by his

"work-rate". England will play South Africa, Fiji, Argentina and Australia on successive weekends, starting with the Springboks on 12 November. Regular starters George Kruis, Maro Itoje, James Haskell, Jack Nowell and Anthony Watson have all been ruled out.
