pirate taxi, a UK citizen wanted on charges back home, and speeding motorists have all been collared around Alicante-Elche airport in just one day, as the Elche local police ramped up their operations against law-breakers in a special set of checks. The latest sweep by Elche officers flushed out a pirate cab, with licensed taxi drivers long complaining over unlicensed operators picking up and dropping off passengers at Alicante-Elche. They have consistantly called for more checks on the clandestine operators and better security checks to keep them out, and even hired a private detective last summer to produce a report on the way the pirates oper-

ated, which included some touting for trade in the actual terminal building. Earlier this year, Tomás Jorge of the local taxi association said that pirate vans carrying up to nine people were on the increase and costing them valuable trade, and that extra restrictions on access to unauthorised carriers had not had the desired effect. The police sweep also found an unnamed British man at the airport who was fleeing justice from the UK authorities, though further details of the nature of the charges was not declared. Speeding drivers brought rich-pickings to the police with radar photographs bringing 93 motorists that were clocked breaking the

limit during their special checks. Also in trouble were three people that were driving their cars illegally as their ITV certificates had expired; a man who faces at

least six points docked on his license for driving under the influence of drugs; and three people driving on licenses that are not allowed in Spain.

orrevieja council is to launch a public consultation as to where the municipality's first dog beach is to be situated, with a shortlist of six sites. The plan is to have the canine beach up and running for the four-legged visitors before next Easter. The consultation has come about after complaints from the opposition Partido Popular, Ciudadanos, and Sueña Torrevieja political parties that residents should get their views taken on board, or else they would have used their majority in the council chamber to veto the project. The suggested locations are Cala Ferrís; Cala de los

Carabineros to the south of Cala Piteras; Cala del Moro in Cabo Cervera; Cala de los Trabajos, by the Mar Bella building; Playa de La Mata Pueblo; and Punta Margalla in an area leading to Playa La Cura. How the consultation will take place still has not been made clear, although beaches councillor Javier Manzanares has suggested that it could take the form of an internet vote; people going to vote at selected polling places; or even resorting to using the electoral register for a formal vote in order to encourage a large turnout. Informal surveys have suggested that the Cala

Ferris site is the likely location to be chosen, whilst in contrast residents in La Mata have been quick to voice their opposition to a dog beach being designated in their area. A successful dog beach was launched earlier this year in Santa Pola, which the council said had become

a big boost for tourism, whilst Orihuela council have voted in principle for a beach at an unspecified location. The Murcia regional government is also encouraging all the councils around the Mar Menor to designate part of a beach designed for canine visitors and their owners.

Gas Natural has promised to review all supply cuts due to non-payment after an 81year-old woman died in Reus in the Tarragona Province. Rosa lived alone and could not make ends meet on her pension, leading to her electricity being cut off two months ago. She used candles for lighting, and one of these set fire to her mattress when she was asleep, destroying her home

and resulting in her death. She had not been able to pay her rent for the last 10 months of her life, according to Reus council. The woman's story has led to nationwide concern and protests, as power providers continue to make multi-million profits whilst thousands of householders are living without gas or electricity because they cannot afford to pay their bills.

Torrevieja council is calling on the Valencian government to increase the area of the coast that will be protected in its forthcoming coastal plan. The council is lobbying for protection to be increased to a two-kilometre strip

between Cabo Cervera (pictured) and the north of Los Locos beach, which has not been included in proposals for the new coastal plan. The Ferrís palm grove area has been included in the Valencian regional proposals.

Almoradi council is to spend 60,000 euro in giving a new look to the town's Plaza de la Libertad. Thanks to a grant from the Alicante

Provincial Council, improvements such as new trees will be planted as well as creating a brand new children's play area.

A call has been made on Torrevieja council to better protect the interests of the British community in the city in the light of last summer’s Brexit vote. A motion has been presented by the main opposition Partido Popular calling for the authority to work harder to keep the approximately seven thousand British citizens in the city better informed about what is going on over Brexit, and the impact that it is likely to have on their lives. Ex-Foreign Residents councillor, Rosario Martínez Chazarra (pictured), of the PP says that the British citizens have become “an essential part of the local community”

and that the uncertainty about the future has allegedly led some of them to decide to leave the area to return back to the UK. The councillor claims that the council has done absolutely nothing to keep British citizens informed about what is going on, and that their main concerns are over health provision, as well as residential status, taxation, and legal issues. The motion calls on the council to provide as much information as possible, and also wants the Spanish government to protect the rights of Spanish nationals in the UK, and calls for the negotiation of a wide-ranging

reciprocal agreement between Spain and the UK, similar to that which Spain has with non-EU countries like Norway and Iceland. The current Foreign Residents councillor, Carmen Morate of the Green Party said that it was still early days as it simply was not clear when the UK would be leaving the European Union and under what conditions. Morate pointed out that Norway maintained close ties with the EU despite not being a member, and that local voluntary organisations like Age Concern acted as a useful contact point for the council to get the views of the local British expat community.

Short Fuse A man who punched his partner in the face whilst he was driving their car between Dolores and Almoradi, has been given a two-year jail sentence by Alicante Provincial Court. The incident happened in June 2014, and whilst the man was behind the wheel, he got into a verbal altercation with his girlfriend, which ended up with a punch that knocked one of her teeth out. Prosecutors had initially called for a five-year prison sentence, but a deal saw the man plead guilty in return for

a lesser sentence and a five-year restraining order against him, in addition to

having pay his ex-girlfriend nearly five thousand euro in compensation.

Return To Sender

Four British people, aged between 28 and 50, who ran a mail-order marijuana distribution business out of the Murcia region have been arrested by the Guardia Civil. Parcels crammed with the drugs were sent out via the Correos office in Bullas to addresses in the UK and Ireland, after the drugs had been cultivated locally.

Correos staff literally smelt that something was up as they dealt with large quantities of parcels letting off a strong stench, and so they called in the Guardia Civil. Agents staked out the Correos office as they waited to see who was posting the packages, as not surprisingly there were no return address labels on the parcels.

A British couple were spotted delivering the parcels to the office, and so the Guardia followed them to a finca outside Bullas, where two greenhouses full of marijuana plants were discovered. Three men and a woman were detained, in addition to the plants being seized along with other drugs and laboratory equipment.

“Illegal” Barriers

The Entre Naranjos urbanisation has illegally installed barriers and fencing at its entrance, according to a report in the Informacion newspaper. Orihuela's urban councillor, Begoña Cuartero, told Informacion that the council never got any official submissions sent into it for them to be put up, in addition to them being erected on what is a public road. What happens next is unclear, but Informacion suggests that if the local

police file a formal report, then the consequence might

Burnt To A Crisp

An angry boyfriend took personal revenge against an Alicante-area pizza company after they sacked his girlfriend. The 32-year-old man went to the moped park of the Telepizza chain at San Vicente del Raspeig and torched 15 delivery mopeds, causing 30,000 euro of damage. Emergency services were

called out in the early hours of Saturday morning and they had to evacuate the block where the pizza restaurant was based. Experts quickly worked out that it was a case of arson, and after speaking to witnesses, the Guardia Civil took in a man for questioning, who was subsequently charged.

Pick It Up

Pilar de la Horadada's local police have launched a campaign against dogs fouling local streets and owners doing nothing to pick up the mess. Officers are reminding owners that they are breaking the law if they are not scooping up their pet's poop, and they are also targeting people who are allowing their pets to wander around without a lead.

be that the installation will have to be taken down.

Rubbish Service A row over the ending of a street cleaning contract in Callosa de Segura has seen the local police ticket two sweeping vehicles, who they said were not in a roadworthy condition and were running without the latest ITV certificates. The council have given notice that they were to end their contract with the SIREM company, who though still obliged to provide a service until the end of their contractu-

al period, put (according to the council) two "sub-standard" vehicles into action. The sweepers, besides having no current ITV certificates, had a flat tyre and a broken windscreen, according to the local police inspections. The council and police have agreed to monitor the state of the vehicles and any potential contractual breaches from the SIREM company that may end up forming the basis of any future legal action.

Taxes will not rise next year in Spain, despite the European Union calling for further fiscal pressure to reduce the country's debt in order to meet its annual target. Secretary of State for the Treasury, José Enrique Fernández de Moya, insists Spain will be able to bring

about a 'fiscal consolidation' to satisfy the EU without changing tax levels of income tax and IVA. He says 'thanks to the improvement seen in the national economy', the Treasury is now earning more money and is able to keep taxes where they are now.

Guardamar council has launched a campaign to detect any eye problems by bringing together several local opticians to offer free eye tests until December 16th. The authority is inviting all local residents to visit a local optician up till the middle of next month to take advantage of the free eye check up.

Plea Escape Three men accused of trying to kill a British man in a bar fight 10 years ago have been given suspended jail sentences and ordered to pay nearly eight thousand euro in compensation, after pleading guilty to the assault. The incident happened at an Alicante City bar in November 2006, with one of the assailants slashing the victim's neck with a broken cava bottle, whilst the two other men punched him. The victim, who flew in for the trial from the UK, suffered anxiety attacks as a result of the incident. A plea bargain deal with prosecutors, who initially called for a seven-year prison terms, came about after the long delay in seeing the case come to trial, with the bottled assailant being given a suspended two-year term, whilst his cohorts were given 15 months each, also suspended.

Ship Docks

Torrevieja is to have a permanent rescue boat and maritime safety vessel docked in the port, after a successful summer basing of a maritime rescue boat, the SAR Mesana. The Salvamar Caliope has already been moved to Torrevieja, ahead of a likely deal being signed between the Merchant Navy and the Cruz Roja.

See You Later, Kids!

A Chinese couple in Murcia City brought a new meaning to "home alone" when they flew off to their native China, leaving their 15-year-old son and his eight-year-old sister to fend for themselves for at least a month. Teachers at the girl's school alerted authorities when they saw the child had not washed, was wearing dirty clothes which were wrong for the time of year, had headlice and had even cut her own hair. When social workers went to the child's home, they found the

property full of rubbish, with rotting remains of food scattered everywhere and dried excrement in the bath. The boy was found not to have been going to school, and he explained his parents had gone to their native China a month before and left him to care for his little sister. Both youngsters were said to be in good health and were taken into care with an approach to the Chinese Embassy in Madrid being considered if the parents do not return to Murcia soon.

Mixed Message

A new survey gives a mixed picture of what British businesses are likely to do with their Spanish investments in the light of summer's Brexit vote. Analistas Financieros Internacionales (AFI) found

that nearly two-thirds of UK companies who have investments in Spain see themselves continuing as normal, but on the other hand, 30 percent said they would cut down, with eight percent actually pledging an increase.

Barberá Dead

The controversial exmayor of Valencia, Rita Barberá (pictured on Monday), died of a heart attack on Wednesday morning, after testifying before the Supreme Court at the start of the week over claims of money laundering by the ruling Partido Popular during her 24-year tenure as mayor. Paramedics tried to resuscitate the 68-year-old for half an hour after receiving an emergency call from a Madrid hotel at around 7.00 am. The Supreme Court began, investigating Barberá in September. Many of her team have been accused of corruption, but Barberá denied any involvement in a suspected illegal financing network. A lower court judge ini-

tially requested an investigation in April, but Ms Barberá's status as a senator, granting her immunity from the lower courts, meant she could only be investigated by the Supreme Court. The investigation relates to Operation Taula, which

saw 24 people arrested in January and is focused on the activities of local officials in Valencia, Alicante and Castellón. All those held have links to the PP, the dominant political force in the region until elections brought changes in May 2015.

Boardwalk Riddle

Torrevieja mayor José Manuel Dolón has written to the Alicante Provincial Council to find out why no work has started on the project for improving the boardwalk in the city between Punta Margalla and Avenida de las Habaneras. The project was being funded by Torrevieja council and the Alicante Provincial council and is meant to see new paving, lighting, and benches as well as play areas.

Dolón says that he met with provincial engineers in September and was told by them that it was “not conven-

ient to start the work” despite the fact that a million-euro tender was awarded at the end of last year.

Project Restart

San Miguel de Salinas council is trying to breathe new life into the almost empty site that was going to feature the Los Invernaderos urbanisation. An agreement to build a 1,800-home urbanisation next to the CV-95 road was signed in 2005, but the builder quit the site, leaving the basic infrastructure uncompleted and ignoring demands from the council to finish the work. Urban planning councillor Sergio Correas told the Informacion newspaper that there is a lot of interest in the area from developers, but that the council will have pay for the infrastructure work that the original developer did not do.

The local residents association has in the past voiced concerns over the fact that local taxpayers will end up having to foot the bill

to finish off the project. Correas has said that the council will take legal action to try to recover any costs incurred.

Getting Involved One year after signing an agreement with the British Embassy, the Cruz Roja (Spain’s equivalent of the Red Cross), has taken fresh steps to get English speaking charities to work more closely with their local groups and to encourage more English-speakers to volunteer. The British Consulate, along with Pedro Dominguez, newly hired by the Cruz Roja as European residents’ coordinator, held a meeting in Torrevieja to allow the Cruz Roja local groups to get to know their English-speaking counterparts. They were keen to collaborate and were unanimous in what their main need was – more volunteers. The different groups also discussed how to get more vulnerable British nationals to use teleasistencia, the Cruz Roja “panic alarm” service which allows at risk people to continue living independently as they can call for help whenever needed. Many British nationals don’t realise that the Cruz

Roja offers this service in English and that it isn’t just a case of pressing the emergency button – volunteers will also carry out regular welfare checks so the user doesn’t become isolated. Following the meeting, the British Vice Consul in Alicante, Sara Munsterhjelm, said: “A year from signing the agreement to work more closely with the Cruz Roja, it is fantastic that they have now employed a full-time English speaking member of staff to work with European residents. The benefits to the Cruz Roja and the English-speaking charities from working together are clear – the

charities can benefit from the Cruz Roja’s knowledge and infrastructure, and the English-speaking charities can help the Cruz Roja reach vulnerable British nationals and give support with fundraising.” Pedro Dominguez said: “I’m excited about this new role and can’t wait to get on the road to work with all the different associations. I would encourage anyone who is thinking about volunteering to get in touch with the Cruz Roja or any one of the English-speaking charities. “It’s a great way to get involved and to integrate into the local community.”

Back To Normal Orihuela council has officially confirmed that the annual Orihuela City Medieval Market will return to the first weekend of February next year, after the chaos in moving this year's event. The traditional February staging was bumped to the start of April due to roadworks around the Plaza de Santa Lucía, along with the view that more tourists would attend because the weather would be warmer. Traders claimed that they were not consulted over the change of the dates. The whole affair descended into farce as over a week before it was due to be held, Orihuela council revealed that the only bidder for the tender to stage the event did

not pass the technical parameters outlined by the authority. The date then was moved towards the end of April, after the council invited five companies to bid for the contract, with fiestas coun-

cillor Mariola Rocamora strongly attacked by opposition groups for her handling of the matter. The 2017 event will be held between Friday February 3rd and Saturday February 5th.

High-End Gang

An address in the Murcia region was raided in an operation by the Guardia Civil which saw 11 people arrested in a move against a gang that specialised in stealing and reselling high-end vehicles across Europe and North Africa. Thirteen properties in Mallorca and Malaga were raided, as well as addresses in the UK and Germany. Investigations began in May after the theft of high-end vehicles, including cars, motorbikes, jet-skis and small boats. Most of those detained had past criminal records, with their leader arrested in Mallorca.

Whale Fenced Torrevieja council is to erect security fencing around a block nicknamed La Ballena (The Whale), which is set to be demolished at a cost of 200,000 euro. The building on Calle Pedro Lorca in the La Punta area of the city has been empty for a decade, and ahead of the demolition tender being approved on an "urgent" basis, the council has instituted an emergency procedure for temporary fencing to be put up.

Honest Cabby

A Canadian tourist who left a suitcase containing 10,000 euro in cash in a Barcelona taxi has been reunited with his money thanks to an honest cab driver. The driver dropped off the suitcase on Saturday at a police station in Barcelona's Eixample neighbourhood, home to Guadi's famed Sagrada Familia church, after he realised it had been left behind, a police spokeswoman said.

"Police opened the suitcase to try to find information that could identify its owner. Inside they found 10,000 euro in cash, baby clothes and a Canadian passport," she added. Using the passport, police were able to track down the owner and return the suitcase. "He was really grateful and sent us a thank you note for returning it so quickly," the spokeswoman said.

A routine police check by Elche officers at an AP-7 service station uncovered a stash of stolen new clothes in a car boot. Two Romanians were arrested after some fifteen-hundred euro of clothes were taken from shops at an Elche commercial centre, and they had gone to a lot of trouble to avoid raising the alarm. Police found devices like

magnets and as well as the shopping bags shielded in foil, which would stop any exit alarms going off at the various retail outlets.

Changed Plea

A British man living on the Northern Costa Blanca has denied downloading child pornography at a trial that started this week at Alicante Provincial Court. The defendant from Calpe was arrested 12 years ago and accused of possessing obscene images

on an external hard drive, and at that time claimed that the material was used to counter the fact that he was impotent, and that he was acting on medical advice. At this week's hearing though, the unnamed man changed his testimony and

Hazy Recollection

Around 200 people nostalgic for the fascist dictatorship of General Franco gathered in a Madrid square on Sunday to commemorate the 41st anniversary of his death. The outdoor rally was organised by fringe right-wing parties, with those attending singing songs and waving old flags from Franco's four-decade reign that ended when he died in 1975, aged 83. Franco's forces won the

1936-1939 Civil War to overthrow Spain's democratically elected government with the help of Nazi Germany and fascist Italy. His period in power saw thousands of opponents murdered or simply made to "disappear".On Saturday, protestors rallied at Franco's giant mausoleum north of Madrid, demanding that it become a memorial site for the anti-fascist struggle during the Civil War.

said that he had not accessed the child pornography at all. Prosecutors are wanting a seven-year prison sentence if he is found guilty, but that could be reduced to just a year, if it is proven that he wasn't going to distribute the obscene material.

Olive Killer

A disease that poses a "very serious threat" to the EU's olive industry has been recorded on Mallorca for the first time. Island officials said a movement ban covering 15,000 hectares had been imposed and measures had been taken to "contain and eradicate its spread". Experts describe Xylella fastidiosa as one of the "most dangerous pathogens worldwide". It was first recorded in the EU in 2013, and has since spread westwards. The disease, which has numerous hosts and vectors, has the potential to spread widely and could possibly devastate the Spanish and European olive harvest.

The Big Pension Swindle Can you remember when the UK government announced that "to give people more financial choice" they were going to allow access to their pension pot prior to retirement? In this column I warned then it would end up a disaster. Firstly, people would reduce their pension pot so they would have far less to live on in retirement, and it would result in a multitude of scams to wrestle unsuspecting people from their money. And guess what? That's just what happened. This is what's been going on:* Almost 11 million pen-

sioners are being targeted annually by cold callers, with savers reporting estimated losses of almost ÂŁ19m to pensions scams between April 2015 and March 2016. * Cold callers often present scams as unique investment opportunities, such as investing your pension pot in a new hotel in an exotic location or in various 'ethical' projects that promise massive returns. * Many unsuspecting victims simply fail to spot scams, with nine in 10 of those choosing an offer that included warning signs such as "free" pension reviews, extra tax savings or access

to pensions before the age of 55. If I could see it coming, why on earth couldn't the imbeciles in government not see it? Sadly, Tory dogma dictates you have to give people the most choice as possible. And look where choice has got us. We are seeing it with thousands of people who have had their retirement life ruined by scammers because the government opened Pandora's Box for them. We're going to see it in the future with pensioners living on the breadline because they have been allowed to raid their pension pot prior to retirement. We

Mobile Madness

On the very day that the UK government announced it was cracking down (once again) on people who use mobile phones while driving, came news from one of our best friends of a serious accident caused by someone committing such an offence. A woman on a phone failed to realise traffic lights ahead of her were at red and went straight through, hitting a car sideways on, injuring the driver and children inside. The UK government is set to double fines and points for those caught using their

mobiles while behind the wheel. As usual, far too late and nothing like severe enough. What's needed is for police to get out of marked cars and to use ordinary cars and catch far more of the irresponsible. The culprits should have fines in four figures and driving bans for at least a year. If you're going to stop the stupid, thoughtless idiots you have to crack down on them - these people are just as likely to be killers as those who drink drive and punishments should be simi-

lar. So often in Spain we see a driver on a phone and police need to do far more to stop it. We saw a driver all over the place on a local roundabout last week - and yes, there was a wretched phone attached to her ear. You need to have all your concentration on driving, not more than half of it having some unnecessary conversation on the phone. Surely it is not beyond the wit of car manufacturers to prevent the use of phones while a car is in motion, unless they are using hands-free.

have seen it on the railways, where, thanks to privatisation giving more choice, we have different companies running services, with a multitude of different fares, and a total nonsense created making life so complicated. We all know about gas and electricity - yes, the government gave us all this wonderful choice so we can spend all that time we haven't got switching from company to company to get the best deal. How crazy can we get? Wasn't it so much easier before all that nonsense? Look at all the fantastic choice we have over mobile

phones, internet providers and TV services; then we have to worry about what our credit rating is and the minefield of trying to book a holiday or a flight when there's a multitude of providers, and then we have to go online to choose the best deal. But then is it the best deal, when we learn that only those companies which subscribe are accessed on the search engines? The obsession with choice goes on and on and I'm sure it's not what the public really want. Why on earth do we allow governments to make our lives ever more complicated than

they need be? As for all these scammers who have been and are still conning pensioners of their hardearned cash, we need a small army of investigators finding the culprits. It's all very well banning cold calling by scammers - it shouldn't have been allowed in the first place. It's closing the stable door after the horse has bolted. We need to bring an end to the whole rotten business of releasing pension funds It was the worst possible thing that George Osborne and David Cameron and co, ever did.

Total Contempt

Regular readers know what I think of useless UK councils, and here are two more examples of why I have little regard for them. Highgrove House, just south-west of Tetbury, is the family residence of Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall. The Georgian estate is off the A433 Bath Road, which has been blighted by potholes for years. A section of the road has now been smoothed over but only in the section outside Prince Charles' estate!

Not surprisingly, people using the road are furious. Gloucestershire County Council has denied favouritism and says they have had no contact with the Highgrove Estate about the A433. Why the whole road has not been dealt with remains a mystery. Even more ridiculous is Swansea Council which has spent two and a half thousand pounds of public money on a prosecution against a 19year-old girl whose "crime" was feeding a few chips to a

pigeon. An enforcement officer issued a ÂŁ25 fine to the teenager for depositing litter but she refused to pay, saying that the bird had eaten the chips within seconds. The council then increased the fine to ÂŁ100 because she was late paying and again she refused, so now they are taking her to court. It transpired that if the girl had fed corn or seed to the bird there would not have been an offence. Stupid councils, stupid jobsworths. Britain would be better without them.

What Is ‘Pension Freedom’? Keith Littlewood, Regional Manager Costa Cálida

For almost 30 years now I have worked in the pensions industry. I started out helping people save and plan for their retirement by using schemes that had certain rules, legislations and barriers to how benefits could be taken. Quite often clients were put off by the restrictions even though generous tax reliefs were offered as incentives. It is ironic now that for people who had pensions either saved personally or accumulated whilst being members of their employer’s schemes, many of those barriers have now been lifted by the Government and they are now left with pension pots that they can have ‘almost’

total control of. Now many people find pensions very confusing; for me it has been a large part of my whole working life. I can help you understand what your pension statements mean. I can even write to a company you worked for or a provider you saved with and get all the information you need so that I can explain in simple terms what your benefits now mean to you. Quite often a client will be unaware of what benefits they have. This happened very recently to me when a client asked me to contact the NHS as she had worked for them part-time for just five years 20 years ago. She was gobsmacked when I got the information back and she had a pension valued at above £200,000 – this is now helping her plan her retirement and she can do the travelling she thought she would never be able to do. This lady was 56 years old, and instead of waiting another four years to receive benefits, she could access them now by transferring to a Qualifying Registered Overseas Pension Scheme as she lived in Spain and not the UK. I saw a picture recently on Facebook that she was enjoying a holiday of a lifetime in Peru. It is very easy to find out information on your pension. Contact me and I will complete a letter of authority from you, then I will do all the work from there. When I get the information back, I will contact you and explain what all your options are. There is no charge for this service so it is very worthwhile for you to dig out your UK National Insurance number and arrange for me to see you. In today’s financial climate, it is essential you do everything you can to make sure your money is safe and secure and what you want to transpire in the future has the best chance of happening. If you need advice or if have any questions regarding the above, you can contact me, Keith Littlewood DipPFS, on 657 684 094 or email keith.littlewood@blacktowerfm.com. Spades Away

A new rubbish and cleaning services building for the San Javier area was given the old-fashioned foundation ceremony routine by Mayor José Miguel Luengo on Monday. Witnessed by bosses of the FCC company that run the local cleaning servic-

es for the council, the headquarters, which will be finished by next summer, is being built on the Alton del Villar II industrial estate, and will consist of an office block as well as garages for all of the garbage collection and street cleaning fleet.

Dolores has a new local police chief in the shape of José Cristian Cañizares, who has moved to the municipality from neighbouring Rafal. He has been the winner of a number of policing awards with Dolores

Mayor, José Joaquín Hernández, saying that it was the start of a new era seeing closer cooperation between the council and the local police, which would be of huge benefit to the people living in Dolores.

Dreaming About You

Many scientists believe that dogs dream while they sleep, and some have even speculated on the contents of those unconscious thoughts. One of them is Harvard psychologist Dr. Deirdre Barrett who is quoted as telling People magazine: "Since dogs are generally extremely attached to their human owners, it's likely your dog is dreaming of your face, your smell and of pleasing or annoying you." The reason, according to her, is that animals are probably like people who tend to "dream about the same things they're

interested in by day..." In fact, even dogs' sleep patterns are considered to be similar to that of humans’, with a report noting that the cycle typically includes "stages of wakefulness, rapid-eyemovement, [also called] REM sleep and non-rapideye-movement sleep." REM sleep is the period during which humans dream, and researchers think the same is probably true for dogs. Indications that canine pets are in this stage reportedly include barking, leg movements, and eyes shifting under closed lids.

Why Do Cats Meow So Much? Why do cats meow? The reasons change as they grow from kittens into cats. Kittens meow to their mothers when they’re hungry, cold, or scared. But once cats get older, they use other vocalisations - such as yowling, hissing, and growling - to communicate with each other. Meowing is reserved for their communications with people. Of course, the amount of meowing varies by breed and even cat. Oriental breeds, especially Siamese cats, are known as great “talkers”, so anyone who doesn’t like meowing probably should steer clear of these breeds. And some cats just seem to like to hear their own voices, while others seem to want to carry on a conversation with their owners. If your cat is talking a little more than you’d like, try to figure out the cause first. Once you know the reason, you can then work to get your cat to meow less. Cats meow for many reasons, from the serious to the attention-seeking. They include:ILLNESS. The first step is a thorough check-up by your vet. Numerous diseases can cause a cat to feel hunger,

thirst, or pain, all of which can lead to excessive meowing. Elderly cats also can develop an overactive thyroid or kidney disease, both of which can result in excessive vocalisations. ATTENTION SEEKING. Despite what some people think, cats don’t like being alone a lot. Cats often meow to initiate play, petting, or to get you to talk to them. If you want to cut down on attention-seeking meows, stop responding when it happens. Only give her attention when she’s quiet. If she starts to meow again, look or walk away. But don’t ignore your pet. Spend quality time each day with her, playing, grooming, and talking to her. A tired pet is a quieter pet. WANTS FOOD. Some cats meow every time someone walks in the kitchen, hoping to get a bite. And many cats become very vocal when it gets close to their feeding times. If this is your problem, don’t feed your cat when she cries. Wait until she quiets to put down food, and don’t give her treats when she meows. If this doesn’t work, get an automatic feeder that opens at set times. Now kitty will meow at the feeder and not you. GREETING YOU. Many cats meow when their people come home, or even when they just meet them in the house. This is a hard habit to break, but look at it as kitty saying she’s happy to see you. LONELINESS. If your pet spends too many hours a day

alone, think about getting somebody to drop in during the day, or find other ways to enrich your pet’s life. Put a bird feeder outside a window she can watch. Leave foraging toys out with food inside. Get her a kitty condo and rotate different toys that you leave out for play. STRESS. Cats that are experiencing stress often become more vocal. A new pet or baby, a move or changes to the home, an illness or the loss of a loved one can turn your cat into a talker. Try to discover what is stressing your pet and help her adjust to the change. If that’s not possible, give your cat extra attention and quiet time to help soothe her. OLD AGE. Cats, just like people, can suffer from a form of mental confusion, or cognitive dysfunction, as they age. They become disoriented and often cry plaintively for no apparent reason, especially at night. A nightlight sometimes can help if your cat becomes disoriented at night, and vets often can prescribe medications that can help deal with these symptoms. BREEDING. If your cat isn’t spayed or neutered, then you’re going to hear a lot more noise. Females yowl

when in heat, and males yowl when they smell a female in heat. Both can be maddening to live with. Getting your pet spayed or neutered will prevent this. WHAT NOT TO DO!!! 1. Don't ignore your cat without making sure there’s no problem. Although you don’t want to reward meowing, sometimes cats meow for good reason - they can’t reach their litter box, they’re trapped in a room, the water bowl is empty. Check on them when they meow to determine if it’s something you can safely ignore, or a problem that must be corrected right away. 2. Don’t punish your cat for meowing. Hitting, shouting, and spraying cats with water rarely work to quiet a meowing cat in the long run, but all those actions will make your cat distrust or even dislike you. 3. Don’t give in. If your cat is used to getting what he wants from meowing, he’s going to meow more, and louder, when it quits working. In other words, it will probably get worse before it gets better. Just keep rewarding quiet behaviour and ignoring meowing, and eventually she’ll get the idea!

BY DAVE SILVER

Plenty Of Push To Pull A Pint Although I am no stranger to the public house, there was a time when to push open the heavy swing doors of a hostelry took a mighty effort on my part. I'm not talking physical strength here. Many childhood years of flicking football figures during numerous table-top fixtures in my dining room meant that my paws were packed with potency when it came to swiftly overcoming any obstacles in my way. It's a pity though that my legs weren't as proficient as my hands. For although opening those pub doors was no big deal, my pins weren't swift enough to stride on into the alehouse in one fluid movement. Consequently, those weighty swing doors would swing right back into my face

while I was still standing on the pavement with embarrassment scrawled over my bruised features. But I digress. The major reason that stepping through those pub doors proved such a problem was that I was terrifically apprehensive. How would I step confidently over to the bar? How would I catch the barman's eye? How would I order my drink? Indeed, what would I have to drink? You must remember that this was long before the days I frequented my own beloved local with the irascible but loveable Dave the barman and the cast of quirky characters which has inspired me to write many a Courier column. No, this was at a time and of a place when and where young adult social life was new to me. I was a

teenage lad raring to step out onto the path of pleasurable pursuits but at the same time absolutely scared stiff of venturing forth. But at the same time, I wasn't on my own. I had my best pal with me. Eric, the soon to be qualified dentist, was an intelligent and confident young fellow and I was sure he would take the lead when we entered the mystical world of the pub for the very first time. 'I'm scared. You go in first,' Eric whispered. 'But you're cleverer and more sure of yourself than I am,' I pointed out. 'But that's only when I'm poking my head into people's mouths and learning how to probe their Hampstead Heaths,' Eric the soon-to-be dentist argued. 'That's what I mean,' I

countered. 'You're already using Cockney slang and everyone knows that London folk are more sophisticated than us provincial Mancunians.' We both stood there on the pavement glued to the spot as pubgoers passed us to enter the pub and passed us again on their way out again. 'The place will be shutting soon,' hissed Eric. 'We're gonna have to make a move.' 'After you,' I shot back. 'No, after you,' insisted Eric who then had an afterthought. 'Anyway, you should be used to pubs,' he claimed. 'Didn't your mum used to send you to your local to bring your dad home at closing time? I read about that in your Courier column.' I dropped my head in

shame. 'I made that up,' I confessed. 'I lied about my father's drinking habits in order to make my family more colourful and therefore more interesting to read about. 'Indeed, Dad is quite an abstemious fellow. He only goes out nearly every night to get away from Mother's pets. He says you can only have so much of a houseful of dogs, cats, budgies and hyperactive tortoises.' Eric scratched his head. 'But surely, after a day at work, your father would be only too pleased to share his evenings with a bunch of friendly animals.' 'Not when your job is head keeper at the zoo you wouldn't,' I said. Eric stopped scratching his head and shook it in anger instead. 'You're lying

again!' he shouted. 'Your father does NOT work with beasties!' My bestest friend stormed off in disgust. But then, because he IS my bestest friend, Eric came back again. 'I guess it's time for both of us to shut our gobs and just get on with it,' he sighed. 'We'll enter the pub together.' And by jove we did it! Feeding on each other's new-found resolve, we strode confidently to the bar, and beckoned the barman. 'What will you be having, boys?' he asked. 'Orange juice? A packet of crisps?' We each produced our birth certificates to prove that we had reached the age to legally quaff alcohol. 'Two pints of your cheapest ale, my man,' said Eric. 'And can I have a cherry on a stick in mine?' I added.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

The BBC must be absolutely spitting mad that they are holding the rights to a show called Top Gear, which is just a name these days, now that Clarkson, Hammond, and May have gone over to Amazon Prime and just launched their superior rival, The Grand Tour. It's a kind of reverse situation to the Great British Bake Off pinched by Channel Four in the "snatch of the year", with both scenarios having exactly the same conclusion, namely, if you don't have the performing talent, you don't have the heart of the show. Remember the blood-letting over the new-look Top Gear earlier this year, with Chris Evans somewhat unfairly being used as the fall guy for the poor audience reaction and ratings. Without Clarkson, Hammond, and May it just wasn't going to be the same, and all kinds of format tinkering and personnel changes just isn't going to bring it back to life. Period. What that trio did, was to make a highly entertaining hour that would appeal to countless viewers around the world who had simply a

A Grand Tour De Force

minimal, or even no interest in cars and motoring. Now they've given their former employers a gigantic bloody nose with The Grand Tour, which if anything, is even better than Top Gear was before, with Amazon giving it a massive 160-millionpound budget. Remember that Top Gear, along with Doctor Who, is the BBC's biggest international-selling money-spinner, and they are left holding a product that will never again earn the past enormous riches for them, despite any kind of hype they choose to promote it over the next year. The Grand Tour is great fun, and is the old Top Gear in all but name. The team anchor it from a big tent in international locations, starting with California, which was perfect to take the rip out of the Yanks over driving on the wrong side of the road, and why the RAF is so much superior to the American Air Force. The new test track is called the Eboladrome, shaped like the Ebola virus, and we had three guest celebrities in the shape of Jeremy Renner, Armie Hammer, and Carol Vorderman, all "dying" in

their attempts to reach the California desert. There's no Stig (he's BBC property), but we have an American Nascar driver taking the rip instead at the Eboladrome (an ex-RAF airfield near Swindon), and we got our trio doing some testing in Portugal for the opening show, with Jeremy Clarkson losing a bet which involved his house being demolished, something that sadly didn't happen! Even the closing captions had a Top Gear-feel about them, and The Grand Tour is a total triumph for Jeremy, Richard, and James, who along with ex-Top Gear boss, Andy Willman, actually produce the show through their own company. They are laughing all the way to the bank, and

good luck to them I say. There were two highlights for me in the BBC's annual Children in Need show aired last Friday. On the funny side, there was a hilarious sketch with Eddie Redmayne trying to get through on the phone to Pudsey Bear, with Mel & Sue manning the BBC switchboard, putting him through to a range of personalities. Redmayne showed what a likeable and fantastic Oscar-winning actor he is, as he knocked out his lines on a movie set with great gusto and perfect timing in a masterclass display. On the serious side, Sheridan Smith introduced a truly heart-breaking video telling the story of a couple that had lost both their chil-

dren, Abigail and Harrison. If you failed to be moved by that, then there is no hope for you as a human being. Presenter Rochelle Humes had to be comforted by her hubby Marvin (they both did great) to keep on going after they cut back to her in the studio once the video had finished, as she merely expressed what we felt. A record 46 million pounds was raised on the night, which I'm sure the great Sir Terry would have looked down on with great pride. On a slight negative, did you get the feeling that CIN had been downsized this year by the cost-conscious Beeb? A good source told me that the production budget was slashed leading to an earlier finish time, coupled with less star names, and far fewer contributions and shows from around the country compared to years gone by. It just smelt of being an Elstree studio production rather than something that brought all corners of the UK together, despite airing a couple of fund-raising montages which made a specific point of emphasising the regions. It's heartening to see that

though there are only two new hit dramas on US mainstream screens this autumn, both have been snapped up for "free to air" viewing by the main UK channels, tearing them away from the clutches of Sky Television. Starting in 10 days time on Channel Four, is a heartwarming drama comedy about a group of characters called This Is Us. The main players all happen to share the same birthday and their paths all intertwine, and with great reviews Stateside, it’s good to see a successful non-crime related show. As I mentioned earlier this year, the small-screen version of Lethal Weapon has been bought by ITV, and has done well for FOX in the States. Sky's obsession with over-inflated sports rights has seen them take their eyes off the ball elsewhere, and that's been to the benefit of other channels, so far. But be warned, as Sky boss Jeremy Darroch recently told a media conference in Barcelona that he is planning to switch more resources away from sport and into general entertainment programming.

How to make shortbread

This most traditional of slow-cooked British classics is a corker of a one-pot winter warmer. Ingredients For the stew 2 cloves ¼ cinnamon stick 2 star anise plain flour, for dusting 1 tbsp salt 1kg/2lb 4oz braising beef (ideally boneless short rib), cut into large pieces 3-4 tbsp vegetable oil 4 carrots, chopped 2 onions, cut into quarters 4 celery stalks, trimmed, cut in half 3 large Bramley apples, cored and diced 500ml/18fl oz ale 1.5 litres/2½ pints chicken stock 1 bunch rosemary, tied together with cook's string 5 bay leaves For the dumplings 115g/4oz fresh white breadcrumbs 115g/4oz beef suet 115g/4oz self-raising flour pinch salt 2 tbsp chopped fresh flatleaf parsley leaves 1 free-range egg, beaten 2 tbsp milk rapeseed oil or melted butter, for glazing Method Preheat the oven to 140C/275F/Gas 1. For the stew, wrap the cloves, cinnamon and star anise in a clean piece of

muslin and secure well. Set aside. Sprinkle the flour onto a plate and mix in the salt. Dredge the beef pieces in the seasoned flour, shaking off any excess. Heat the oil in a large, heavy-based, lidded, flameproof casserole over a medium heat. Add the beef in batches, frying for a few seconds on all sides, or until browned all over. Remove from the casserole using a slotted spoon and set aside in a bowl. Repeat the process with the remaining beef. Add the carrots and fry, stirring regularly, for 6-8 minutes, or until sticky and deep golden-brown. Remove from the casserole using a slotted spoon and set aside with the beef. Add the onions and fry, stirring regularly, for 6-8 minutes, or until well coloured. Remove from the casserole using a slotted spoon and set aside with the beef and carrots. Add the celery and fry, stirring regularly, for 6-8 minutes, or until well coloured. Return the beef and cooked vegetables to the casserole and stir well. Add the muslin bag and the apples and stir again. Pour in the ale, stir well, then

bring the mixture to the boil. Pour in the stock, add the rosemary and bay leaves and return the mixture to the boil. Stir well, then cover the casserole with the lid and reduce the heat until the mixture is just simmering. Season, to taste, with salt. Transfer the casserole to the oven and cook for 2½3½ hours, or until the beef is tender and falling-apart. For the dumplings, mix together the breadcrumbs, suet, self-raising flour, salt and parsley in a large bowl until well combined. In a jug, whisk together the egg and milk until well combined. Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients, then gradually pour the wet ingredients into it. Stir the dry mixture into the wet mixture a little at a time, until the mixture comes together as a dough. Roll the dough into eight equally-sized dumplings, then set aside. When the stew has been

Coat the bottom of a 9x13-inch casserole dish with olive oil, and sprinkle with garlic and hot red pepper flakes. Arrange the chicken breasts in bottom of the dish, and pour the marinara sauce over the chicken. Sprinkle the basil over the marinara sauce, and top with half the mozzarella cheese, followed

by half the Parmesan cheese. Sprinkle on the croutons, then top with the remaining mozzarella cheese and remaining Parmesan cheese. Bake in preheated oven until cheese and croutons are golden brown and the chicken is no longer pink inside, about 35 minutes to an hour, depending on the shape and thickness of your chicken breasts. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of a chicken breast should read at least 160 degrees F (70 degrees C). Serve immediately.

cooking for 2½-3 hours and the meat is tender, remove the casserole from the oven and remove the lid. Dot the dumplings onto the surface of the stew, leaving space between each. Put the lid on the casserole and return it to the oven for a further 20 minutes, or until the dumplings have expanded. Remove the casserole from the oven. Remove the lid from the casserole and brush the tops of the dumplings with a little oil or melted butter. Increase the oven temperature to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Return the casserole to the oven. Continue to cook for a further 10-15 minutes, or until the dumplings are crisp and golden-brown on top and cooked through. Set the casserole aside for 10-20 minutes before serving. To serve, place the casserole on the table and let people help themselves.

Ingredients 200g/7oz unsalted butter, at room temperature, cut into small cubes 100g/3½oz sugar, plus extra for sprinkling 1 tsp vanilla extract 300g/10½oz plain flour, sifted, plus extra for dusting Method Preheat the oven to 160C/325F/Gas 3. Mix together the butter and sugar, either by hand or using an electric hand whisk, until pale and smooth. Add the vanilla extract, then gently mix in the flour until completely incorporated (try not to work the flour too much or the biscuits will not be so crumbly). Using your hands, squeeze the mix-

ture together into a ball of dough. Gently roll the dough out to about 5mm/¼in thick (dust the work surface with a little flour if the dough sticks). Cut into shapes using a biscuit cutter. Transfer the biscuits to a baking tray lined with baking parchment (or a non-stick baking tray) and chill in the fridge for 15 minutes to rest (chilling makes them hold their shape better when baking). Before cooking, sprinkle each biscuit with a pinch of granulated sugar. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until pale golden-brown. Remove from the oven and transfer the biscuits to a wire rack to cool

Medieval markets take place all across the area at various times of the year and they all regularly attract thousands of visitors each time. However, with Christmas just around the corner, now is the perfect time to visit one, especially if you’re looking to buy your family and friends a number of original, novel and handcrafted presents that you won’t find in any of your local shops. We’re certain that with the Spanish “puente” coming up in just under two weeks, the forthcoming Medieval Market celebrated in the Murcia holy

town of Caravaca de la Cruz between 6 and 8 December will attract crowds not only from nearby local towns, but also from much further afield. This is a yearly event that always takes place in conjunction with the fiestas celebrated on the 6 and 8 December. Not only that, this medieval market is actually the biggest in the whole of the Murcia region, with in excess of 200 different stalls. As is typical of these types of markets, expect to find demonstrations of all kinds throughout the day and night including medieval musicians,

artisans, storytellers, fire eaters and jugglers, glassblowers, carpenters and so much more. The whole of the old quarter, together with the Plaza Arco, Plaza Nueva and the surrounding little side streets will all be decked out in medieval decoration, with colourful banners, flags, streamers and bunting hanging up in the air and hay on the floor, just to make it look that bit more realistic! Caravaca de la Cruz is a very interesting place to visit at any time of year seeing as it is one of the five holiest

cities in the world (along with Santiago de Compostela, Rome, Jerusalem and Santo Toribio de Liébana in Cantabria). For this reason, we highly recommend a day trip to this city, which is located in the north of the province, on the border with Granada. David’s Coaches will be running a trip to the Caravaca Medieval Market on Tuesday 6 December only, and it is priced at 12 euro per person. Please see page 5 for more details. The market will be open from 11 am until 9 pm each day.

Artist – Betsy

Emerging pop singer Betsy has been chosen as our record for this week. Following in the footsteps of her last single, Lost and Found, this one is getting a ton of airplay across the UK. She has a voice that´s been described as a cross between Cher, Heather Small and Alison Moyet, and this young lady from London writes all her own tunes! The video that goes with this track is also worth a look – It tells the story of a woman needing more than her counterpart can give her and gives the story an often humorous twist involving a trailer park, 60´s décor and... a chicken!

Reading residents are Britain's nosiest Reading is home to Britain’s nosiest neighbours, according to new research from leading property website, Zoopla. The Nosey Neighbours Index reveals that residents of this popular commuter belt town check out how much their neighbours’ homes are worth almost twice as much as the average Brit. Compiled by examining how many times visitors to the Zoopla website used the property estimates tool to get an instant valuation on a neighbouring property, the Nosey Neighbours Index compared 50 of Britain’s biggest towns* against an average national ‘nosiness’ score of 100. Residents of Reading topped the table, indexing significantly higher – almost double the national average – with a score of 189.1. The South East of England as a region appears to be full of residents wanting to boost their local property knowledge by getting the inside track on how much their neighbours’ properties are worth. A further three of the top 10 ‘nosiest’ towns - Milton Keynes (176.6), Southampton (129.9) and Brighton (118.5) – are all located in the area. Comparing the top of the Index to the bottom shows a true north-south divide, with

Southern Britain seemingly keener on staying wellinformed on neighbouring property values than the North. Dundee came in last place, with residents checking out their neighbours’ property prices 58.5 per cent less than average (a score of 41.5), and a range of towns in Yorkshire and Humber make up most of the bottom 10, with Hull (49.6), Doncaster (58.8), Rotherham (59.2) and Barnsley (64.7) placing third, sixth, seventh and ninth ‘least nosey’ respectively. On a regional level, the research reveals Greater London locals to be the nosiest overall area, with the capital’s residents checking local property prices 79.6 per cent more than the average (a score of 179.6). London was closely followed by the South East (160.7) and East of England (135.2). There also appears to be a correlation between the

level of nosiness and property price growth in the last 12 months – generally property prices in the towns making up the top 10 have experienced a much larger growth rate than those in the bottom end of the table. Towns in the top 10 have all increased in average property value by 2.5 per cent or more in the last 12 months, compared to the least nosey towns where most have a growth rate of around one per cent, or less. Lawrence Hall, spokesperson for Zoopla, comments: “Whether you are buying or selling, one of the best things you can do as you start this journey is to research the property market to get an idea of what is happening to house prices in your local area. Residents in Reading are clearly well aware of this and have their finger very firmly on the pulse when it comes to knowing their local market.”

Bagged salads 'pose salmonella risk', say researchers "Bagged salad can fuel the growth of food-poisoning bugs like salmonella and make them more dangerous," BBC News reports. Researchers found evidence that the environment inside a salad bag offers an ideal breeding ground for salmonella, a type of bacteria that is a leading cause of food poisoning. They grew salmonella in salad juice and leaves at dif-

ferent temperatures to see what happened, and found salad leaf juice – released from the leaves when they're damaged or broken – supports the growth of salmonella, even at fridge temperature. They also found that if leaves are contaminated, the bacteria aren't removed by washing in water. However, the chances of a salad bag being contami-

nated by salmonella or other bacteria in the first place are thought to be low. An independent expert commented: "The rates of produce that have been found to be contaminated are between 0-3%." That said, it is important not to be complacent. An E. coli outbreak in July this year, thought to be linked to contaminated salad, killed two people and hospitalised

62 others. You should wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, then dry them carefully, after using the toilet and before eating or preparing food. You should also wash fruit and vegetables before eating them – although washing did not remove salmonella in this study – and pay extra attention to use-by dates.

Magnesium for Irregular Heartbeat Magnesium is responsible for the normal transmission of signals through the body, which makes magnesium a vital nutrient for many thousands of chemical processes that regulate it’s internal workings. Magnesium is essential for regulating the contraction and relaxation of the muscles in the body, including the muscles of the heart. And so magnesium is pivotal in regulating the force of contraction of the heart as well as the rate of contraction of the heart. Magnesium deficiency is a common cause of irregular heartbeat. Blood tests measuring magnesium levels will nearly always be normal because only 1% of magnesium is

found in the blood. The remaining 99% is found in cells and impossible to measure through a blood test. The importance of magnesium in the treatment of irregular heartbeat came to our attention at MedB a few years ago when Andrew visited our clinic. He had been suffering from an irregular heartbeat for a few years and after a diagnostic scan and treatment, his problem improved significantly, but never fully disappeared. Many months later, Andrew learned about the role of magnesium in regulating your heartbeat and started taking magnesium supplements which completely cured the irregular heartbeat. Magnesium helps regulate

blood pressure by relaxing the arteries. It also helps the colon absorb water to soften stool and prevent constipation. The commonest symptoms of magnesium deficiency are muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat, constipation, and headaches. Magnesium malate is the best-absorbed form of magnesium. Other forms of magnesium such as magnesium citrate and carbonate are poorly absorbed. Liquid magnesium or magnesium oil can be applied on the skin and is very well absorbed. Health Benefits Of Walnuts Walnuts are more than just a tasty accompaniment on a cheese platter. These tree nuts are rich in vitamin B, fibre, omega-3 fatty acids and several other nutrients, and can potentially alter your attitude. A new study from University of New Mexico Nutrition Professor Peter Pribis found that young, healthy men who consumed walnuts every day experienced significant improvement in mood.

The researcher carried out a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled, crossover feeding trial with walnuts for eight weeks, EurekAlert! reported. The study participants were 64 students between the ages of 18 and 25 from different ethnic groups — spanning Caucasian, African American, Hispanic and Asian. Participants were asked to eat three slices of banana bread every day over a period

37

of 16 weeks. For half of the time, the loaf contained finelyround, unnoticable walnuts; while the other half of the group consumed banana bread that contained no nuts at all. "There was a meaningful, 28 percent improvement of mood in young men," Pribis said, according to EurekAlert!. "However we did not observe any improvement of mood in females. Why this is, we do not know."

Pribis observed a significant improvement in mood in young, healthy males. "In the past, studies on walnuts have shown beneficial effects on many health outcomes like heart disease, diabetes and obesity," the researcher explained. "Our study was different because we focused on cognition, and in this controlled randomised trial (CRT) we measured mood outcomes in males and females."

Los Angeles Motor Show 2016 The Los Angeles Motor Show ran from November 18-27. Jaguar has stolen all the headlines with its I-Pace electric car, but here's the best of the rest from the sunny Pacific coast of the United States of America. The state of California would be the largest car market in the world if it was a country, yet they struggle to rustle up a decent show. Amid a few genuine world firsts (Jaguar I-Pace, Mazda CX-5, Mini Countryman, Alfa Romeo Stelvio), there are a myriad of smaller introductions and range-fillers: a rear-wheel drive Lamborghini Huracán, fourwheel drive versions of the new Porsche Panamera, Mercedes-Benz E63 S 4MATIC and Maybach S650. Oh, and a turbocharger for the Kia Soul. Alfa Romeo even chose to abandon the soulless show halls to launch its first-ever SUV, the Stelvio, from a tent flung up in the car park. Going into battle with Jaguar's F-Pace and Porsche's Macan, the Stelvio we saw in LA is the 503bhp/443lb ft twin-turbo V6 Quadrifoglio version. When this Giulia saloonbased model goes on sale in the UK next year, however, we'll see smaller petrol and diesel engines and rearwheel-drive only versions. The reaction to Jaguar's I-Pace might yet prove a

storm in a teacup anywhere outside of California, or places where pure electric vehicles are so subsidised by government that they are impossible to turn down. Pundits feel that the I-Pace sets up the traditionally underperforming Jaguar against Tesla's Model 3, which is due at the end of next year. What does everyone else think? We asked Oliver Blume, chief executive of Porsche, which is basically committed to plug-in hybrid, combustion engines and pure electric vehicles. "The pure EV market share is so low at the moment that no one knows how fast it will grow," he said. "It is very important for the acceptance of e-mobility that you have a good [driving distance] range, short recharging times and a good infrastructure. And it is not so important to be first as it is to offer a good product." Porsche is still trying to get its high-voltage infrastructure idea off the ground around the world, but mainly in Germany. "Our Mission E car," says Blume, "will have a 500km range, 15-minute charge time for 80 per cent of the battery capacity, and it will be on sale at the end of the decade." That's the trouble with EV cars at the moment. The technology is like that of the early mobile telephones;

buy one today and it'll be blown away by what you can buy tomorrow. Finding out what's happening at Ford these days takes the tenacity and investigation powers, if not the facial hair, of Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot. So the new Ford Ecosport, which goes on sale in the US at the end of next year, is due in Europe in 2018. It's easy to scoff at this little SUV, which Ford of Europe decided it wanted so late in the day that little could be done to get it up to Europe's exacting standards. This new car, might look (almost) the same as the current model, but it's been completely reworked with new suspension geometry, subframes, a completely new electrical architecture, fresh cabin design, trim and seats and a fascia which looks remarkably like that in next year's new Fiesta model (which is officially unveiled in two weeks). These pretty rough design studies are intended to give an idea of what's going to happen in the US, and it's pretty sure it'll happen in Europe, too. Maybach, the 107-yearold engine and car maker, now Mercedes-Benz's luxury marque, has had a series of lurching stop/start revamps since it was reintroduced in 2002.

These days it's a trim level, but what a trim level, with the eve-of-showlaunched MercedesMaybach S650 cabriolet costing 300,000 Euro (expect the same in pounds) and expressions of interest in every single one of the 300 slated to be built. So could Maybach start to build its own special-bodied cars once again? "No," says Matthias Lührs, Mercedes head of product planning. "We have no current or future plans to have a pure Maybach model. We have sold 15,000 [current Maybach-badged models] so far and that shows we have found the right niche. Why would we change our strategy?"

Why indeed, but that leaves Lührs with a bit of a problem with the Vision 6, the simply lovely specialbodied concept shown at Frankfurt a few months ago, which has had the world's press clamouring for the company to build it. Lührs says Vision 6's role is to provide inspiration and possibly paint colours for other future models. "At the moment, we have no plans to produce the Vision 6," he says. "We are always studying our portfolio and looking for the right spots, though." Now that's less unequivocal than his former denial. Perhaps if we asked again, he might give a little more... Too late, time's up and the

PR shooed us out of the room. Which brings us to the two rather overlooked SUV crossover introductions at the show, Mazda's CX-5 and Audi's Q5. The latter justifiably overlooked, since the promised drive failed to happen: officially because someone forgot to fill in the correct import documentation, unofficially (it was rumoured) because of recent revelations from the California Air Resources Board that Audi's automatic transmissions had been programmed with emissions-cheating software, and the aggrieved Yanks told the Germans from Ingolstadt to take a hike.

RICHARD CAVENDER

BlueMoon Solutions www.bluemoonsolutions.es

BlueMoon Solutions is the computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca. BlueMoon Solutions comes to you at home or at work. Their personal service covers from Alicante to Pilar de la Horadada.

Richard moved to Spain ten years ago having left his management background behind in the UK and decided to use his IT skills to help home users and small businesses with their PC problems. Now a relaxed 'computer man' he is out and about in the Spanish sun every day, making house and shop calls and using his vast experience and qualifications to sort out the problem there and then. Computers are his hobby as well as his work so don’t be surprised to get an answer to your email in the early hours!

ADVICE: Bill accidentally archived an email in Outlook ADVICE: John was receiving emails from himself – that and now can’t find it. he didn’t send.

Q A

Hi Richard, I was re-reading an e-mail that I sent and pressed/clicked the archive button and it disappeared. How do I, if possible, get it back? Thanks, keep up the good work. Bill

Hi Bill, sorry for the delay in replying. When you press the “archive” button in Outlook the email is moved to the archive folder. If you can see this folder, then the emails will be in it, if you don’t have an archive folder, then the emails will have been moved to another folder. The best way to find them will be to use the search feature to look for the email. You can search for its subject line or part of the subject line or message. Once you locate the email, you will then know which folder is set as your archive folder and other emails will be in the same folder.

Q

I read your article in The Courier every week and I was wondering if you can help me resolve a problem with junk mail. Recently I have been receiving junk mail and when I try to block it, I get a message saying I cannot because it comes from my own email address. Obviously, this is virus/con trick. I have Kaspersky Total security antivirus but it does not find this problem. Any ideas how to stop these types of emails arriving in my inbox? I also get emails that I try to block and then I get a message saying that the sender email address does not exist! Best Regards, John

A

Hi John, there are two likely reasons why this could be happening., First is that your account has become compromised. You should change your password as a precaution anyway – if this is the cause, then you will also see the emails in your sent items. The second is that someone (or something, more likely a bot) is “spoofing” your email address and there isn’t really anything that you can do about that, it’s the ability (without the relevant domain checks in place) for anyone to send emails pretending to be another person.

Year End For Nico

Rugby Roundup

In the latest matches in the FERRMUR Murcia league last weekend, the Torrevieja Tigers cadetes (pictured in green) lost an exciting encounter by one point, going down 26-25 against Totana in a match played in Elche. The ITV Orihuela Vega Baja cadetes side meanwhile (pictured in their black and yellow kit) lost by 19 points to 10 at the University of Murcia (CURM).

Nicola Kuhn, the tennis superkid tipped to become Spain’s new Rafael Nadal, has rocketed into the world’s top 800 players on the back of his best-ever run in a men's tournament, writes DONNA GEE. The 16-year-old Torrevieja sensation reached the semi-final of the Kuwait Futures event in Meshref, earning him six valuable ATP ranking points and lifting him nearly 100 places to 788 in the world. Kuhn, who began this year ranked at 1997 by the ATP and 71 at junior level, will start 2017 at No.6 junior. And with two more years in the 18-and-under section, he has high hopes of winning a Junior Grand Slam before moving onto the men's circuit full-time. The blond six-footer flew to Kuwait days after reaching the last four in the Osaka Mayor’s Cup - his final Grade A junior tournament of 2016. He eventually bowed out against the eventual winner, local hero Yosuke Watanuki, describing the Japanese youngster’s incredible form on the day as ‘’insane’’. Kuhn’s form in the Land of the Rising Sun lifted him three places to No.12 in the world junior rankings. And with half of those currently above him ineligible next year, he will enter 2017 in sight of the coveted number one spot. He went on to prove in Kuwait that, despite his youthful physique, he already has the class to test experienced players ten years his senior to the full. Seeded seven Meshref, Kuhn’s resilience in seeing off the number four seed Ronan Joncour in the quarter-final was remarkable. Trailing 2-4 in the second set after losing the first 6-4 to the Frenchman, defiant Nico hit back to take the set 7-5 before easing home 6-3 in the decider. Ultimately, Kuhn found the challenge of beating the second seed Max Neuchrist a bridge too far and failed to reach his first Futures final, losing in straight sets to the battle-hardened Austrian, who is nine years older than Kuhn and ranked 400 places above him. Kuhn admits he will be disappointed if he fails to win at least one of the four Junior Grand Slams, starting with the Australian Open in Melbourne in January. However, he plans to concentrate on raising his ATP profile rather than junior events, which means entering more and more ITF Futures tournaments and hoping for Challenger wildcards, which offer more lucrative ranking points and potentially pit him against the world’s top stars.

A Quick Stroll

Forget doing a halfmarathon or full marathon if you're an ultra-runner. These special athletes really do go the distance, namely 100 kilometres, and they'll be converging on Los Alcázares this Sunday morning for their world championship race, run by the sports governing body, the IAU (International Association of Ultrarunners). The gruelling showdown

takes place every two years, with 357 athletes from 33 countries registered to take part on Sunday, with the race starting bright and early at 7.00 am on Avenida de Los Narejos. Twenty laps consisting of five thousand metres around the promenade will make up the route, with the fastest men’s race times reaching a mere six and a half hours.

Kuhn, son of Rita and Alfred Kuhn of La Mata, began the year aiming to make the Junior Top 10 and ATP Top 600 by Christmas. He has come close to achieving both targets – and if he continues to progress at his current rate, don’t be surprised to see him lining up against the likes of Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic before 2017 is out. Nico recently flew to Dubai for a family holiday, reflecting on what he described as ''a good year with its ups and downs and new experiences. " I would have loved to get even better results,'' he added, "but it was a positive year and we learned very much from it . We know our mistakes, we know where to work on and we have even bigger motivation to get better each day. ''We will come back stronger next year.''

Santiago Start

Santiago de la Ribera will once again host the start of the Tour of Murcia cycle race in February 2017. The contest will begin, like earlier this year, on Santiago's Avenida Sandoval on Saturday Feburary 11th, with the same route being used as nine months ago, which will see the cyclists finishing on Murcia City's Gran Vía. San Javier Mayor José Miguel Luengo and Vuelta race director Francisco Guzmán made the formal

announcement of the race start details this week, with the Mayor saying the route will take the cyclists into San Javier's centre before moving round other parts of the municipality ahead of the inland journey. Francisco Guzmán said that the number of participants would be restricted to around 120 for safety reasons, but that it was still too early to say which teams and competitors would be taking part.

Charley’s Stateside First

Last Sunday was a day to remember for Charley Hull in Florida as the 20-year-old English player won her first ever LPGA title by taking the CME Group Tour Championship by two shots. Hull finished on a tournament record 19 under par to beat South Korea's Ryu So-yeon. The Northamptonshireborn player started the

final round with a oneshot lead ahead and shot six birdies in her bogey-free round for a six-under-par 66 at the Florida course. "It's wicked to do it at 20," she said. "It feels good to be joining the winners this year." World number one Lydia Ko was tied for 10th, while England's Jodi Ewart Shadoff fin-

ished tied for 36th. Scotland's Catriona Matthew finished in 46th place. Hull and Ryu were tied coming to the par5 17th hole where the tournament effectively ended. Ryu’s second shot came up short and against the face of a bunker, requiring she come out sideways. It led to a bogey, while Hull got up and

down for birdie from behind the green. “I was pretty calm,” Hull said. “When I’m on the golf course I’m trying not to think about golf and that’s what I just did today. It kind of made me not think I was leading the golf tournament.” Both players then parred the last as Hull took the title, in the final tournament of the

season. The world number 29, who finished seventh at the Rio Olympics, had a bogey-free weekend, with 12 birdies and 24 pars in her final 36 holes and wins just over 400,000 pounds in prize money. "I just feel pretty good where I am at the moment," added Hull. "I feel like I am mentally good. I feel relaxed. I

think that's the key for me. "If I come into a week relaxed I feel good. This week it happened for me. I'm confident. I'm happy," she said. It is Hull's second title since turning professional in 2013, having won the Lalla Meryem Cup on the Ladies European Tour in 2014.

Matt Hits The Mark

Sheffield’s Matt Fitzpatrick came through a final round tussle with Tyrrell Hatton to claim the biggest win of his career at the DP World Tour Championship last weekend. The Ryder Cup star birdied the last to close a five-under 67 at Jumeirah Golf Estates and finish one clear of Hatton, who led along the closing stretch until a finalhole bogey. Henrik Stenson matched Rory McIlroy's seven-under 65 to finish inside the top 10 and secure the Race to Dubai title, as

Danny Willett ended the week in tied-50th. The victory pushed Matt Fitzpatrick to sixth place on the final Race to Dubai standings and confirmed his share of the season-ending bonus pool – as he picked up 300,000 pounds. This was his third European Tour victory and, at just 22 years and 80 days, he becomes the youngest Englishman to win three titles on the circuit. With the win he should move into the top-30 on the Official World Golf Ranking. Henrik

Stenson did enough to be crowned Race to Dubai champion. The Swede closed with an excellent 65 to end the week in a tie for 9th place. The Open champion secured the Order of Merit title for a second time, having previously won it in 2013. “I’m very pleased to get my name on this trophy once again,” said Stenson. “It’s been a great year, the best year of my career.” Rory McIlroy also closed with a 65 to share ninth place in Dubai.

Buba Saves Torry Despite half a dozen new signings for Torry since their last home match, only centre-half Calzado started Sunday's match at the Nelson Mandela stadium, and an excellent debut was only eclipsed by goalkeeper Buba, who made a string of crucial second-half saves to help Torry earn a point against a good Ilicitano outfit. It was also the first time for a long time that Torry had a full squad of 16 on and off the bench. Torry started the game brightly and it was very much against the run of play when the visitors opened the scoring on 18 minutes. Buba punched clear, but in doing so, came far off his line. As the ball was returned into the box, he and several of his defenders were "missing" and Alberto was one of four Ilicitano men who were unmarked and he hooked the ball home in emphatic fashion. Five minutes later, though, Torry were back on terms thanks to Pastor. Damian saw the winger make his dash and pushed through a slide rule pass through that saw Pastor one on one with Juanma in the opposition goal. His first shot was saved by the keeper, but he pounced on

CD TORREVIEJA 1 ELCHE ILICITANO 1 the rebound and stuck it home in no uncertain fashion. When Pastor returns to Australia in January, he will be sorely missed, especially as he has scored four out of Torry´s last six goals, with only Hugo and Matheus netting since Lewis hit home in the defeat by Muro six weeks ago. Torry, though, will feel that this is two points dropped rather than one won. Damian saw his firsthalf shot graze the upright. Pastor was clearly impeded in the box when attempting to get on the end of a left -

wing cross. Matheus scorned a great chance with only Juanma to beat, and Luis Carlos worked his magic in the Ilicitano box, jinxing past defender after defender only to be denied by an excellent stop from the keeper. At the other end, Buba earned his corn. He made two incredible stops when goals looked certain and in this respect a draw seemed a fair result. In the final analysis though, Torry continue to spurn far too many golden chances. Six games remain before

NOVELDA CF 1 CD ALMORADI 0 in the second period of play. Almoradi, despite some battling performances, are now only two points above the relegation area, and face another stern examination at home this Sunday morning when four-placed Ontinyent come to the Sadrián stadium for an 11.30 am kick-off. In last weekend's other third

division action, Orihuela suffered a second successive one-nil defeat, this time at Rayo Ibense, with a blank weekend ahead. Crevillente having done Torrevieja and Almoradi a favour by winning at struggling Buñol, can again help them out as they entertain third-from-bottom Muro this weekend.

Thader’s Late Show A late 87th-minute penalty at struggling Callosa from Rubén Sanz broke the recent barren spell for Thader, leaving them fourth in the Preferente Group Four table. The match was switched to Callosa due to Thader's ground being unavailable last Sunday, but the change didn't seem to concern the visitors, who dominated proceedings for the first half hour, with Lloyd Dummett enabling a crucial pass putting Noé in for the first goal. Just before halftime, Callosa got onto level terms as the ball flew around the Thader area like it was in

Nothing At Novelda A first-half goal from Segarra gave second-placed third division promotion contenders Novelda their expected win on Sunday against an Almoradi side that got into the match the longer it went on, but just did not create any serious scoring opportunities. Novelda ran the first half in a match which saw Josete return to the Almoradi goal after being out due to injury. He had no chance against Segarra's 34th-minute strike, whilst Alberto in the Novelda goal barely broke sweat. Almoradi had a lot more of the ball in the second half, but didn't really do much with it, and at the other end, it was substitute Jordi who should have sealed up the points for Novelda with the best chance

CALLOSA DEPORTIVA CF 1 CD THADER 2 a pinball machine, and with the defence unable to clear it, Alberto got the equaliser. Both teams went for it in the second half, with Thader having to survive a number of

scares before they were awarded a penalty with minutes to go, which was duly converted by Rubén Sanz. This Sunday, Thader are away to mid-table San Joan.

the Christmas break, four of those away matches. With Muro managing a win at the weekend, Torry drop a place and are now second from bottom ahead of the already-looking doomed Segorbe. The good news is that only five points covers them and the seven teams above them, and they take on four of those sides before the holiday. Their next match though is this Sunday morning away to eighth-placed Almazora, with an 11.45 am kick-off.

CD Montesinos smashed all club records with their best ever victory in last weekend’s match against Todo Deporte Montesinos. To say that Monte could have got more than ten goals was an understatement, and people were left scratching their heads at how the perennial strugglers of Todo managed their only shock point of the season the previous weekend at a normally good Benijofar side. As a semblance of a contest, this was almost over before it started as Carlos scored early on, with Todo then producing a rare attack which Monte reserve keeper Rodrigo did well to keep out. Further first-half goals from Fernando, this a long-range shot which baffled the Todo keeper, a goal from Vaz and

another from top scorer Aure, sent the players in at half time with a comfortable 0-4 score-line. If the first half was onesided, the second was even more so. A twice-taken penalty right at the start of the second half was converted by Vaz for his second of the game. Alfredo made it six and further goals from Aure, Carlos, Dario and Coco completed the rout and a historic day for CD Montesinos who are a completely different side under the management team of Carlos Perez and Angel Ivan. Because of teams pulling out of the league at the last minute, Monte have no league fixtures this weekend, and go away to Orihuela Deportiva the following weekend.

The Price Of Victory

Messi Double

SPORTING LISBON 1 REAL MADRID 2

CELTIC 0 BARCELONA 2

Cristiano Ronaldo got a rapturous welcome on his return to where his career began at Sporting Lisbon, but Real showed no mercy in booking their place in the Champions League knockout stages, although the win came at a big price. Gareth Bale limped off just before the hour mark with an ankle injury, which will keep him out of action for the rest of the year. The Welsh international suffered a dislocation of the peroneal tendons of his right ankle, which may or may not need surgery. At best he will be out for four weeks, but if he needs an operation, he is unlikely to return to action before the end of January. Real had substitute Karim Benzema to thank for all three points as he came off the bench to down Sporting's 10 men with a fine finish from Sergio Ramos's cross. Raphael Varane had fired Real into a first-half lead, but Sporting captain Adrien Silva levelled from the penalty spot after Joao Pereira had seen a straight red card. Real still need to beat Borussia Dortmund at home in two weeks' time to top Group F after the Germans thrashed Legia Warsaw 8-4.

Celtic were dumped out of the Champions League on Wednesday, as Barcelona won to secure top spot in Group C, thanks to a double strike from Lionel Messi. This was a professional Barca display that will ease any worries from Saturday's goalless stalemate with Malaga, making the final game with Borussia Moenchengladbach irrelevant and allowing coach Luis Enrique to give his first teamers a much-needed rest. Messi, who now has nine goals in this season's competition, fired an early effort wide and came close to turning in Ivan Rakitic's bouncing header, but the Argentina international was not to be denied after 24 minutes. Neymar picked out Messi with a clever chip from the lefthand channel and he took the pass in his stride to send a first-time volley past Craig Gordon at his near post, the visitors' 400th goal in all competitions under the management of Luis Enrique. Barca doubled their lead in the 55th minute as Sergi Roberto's throughball led to Suarez being brought down by Izaguirre in the penalty area and Messi stepped up to send the spot-kick straight down the middle.

Neymar Jail Call

Spain’s public prosecutor has called for Barcelona’s Neymar to be given a two-year prison sentence for his part in a corruption case over his transfer from Brazilian club Santos to the La Liga champions in 2013. If found guilty though, he would not have to serve any jail time, as the Spanish legal system does not lock up first-time offenders on sentences of two years and under. More dramatically, Judge José Perals also called for a fiveyear sentence for the former Barcelona president Sandro Rosell and a fine of eight point four million euro for the club, but called for charges against the current president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, to be dropped. The case stems from a complaint by the Brazilian investment group DIS, which owned 40 percent of Neymar’s transfer rights and which alleges it received less money than it was entitled to as Barcelona concealed the real transfer fee. Barcelona have been engulfed in legal troubles over Neymar’s transfer since 2013. Rosell resigned as the club’s president in 2014 for his role in the affair and testified in court in February alongside Bartomeu, Neymar and Neymar’s father. The club struck a deal with prosecutors in June to settle a separate case and paid a five-and-a-half-million-euro fine and avoided trial on charges of tax evasion over the transfer. Barcelona thought they had brought the affair to a close when Judge José de la Mata archived the case in June, although the public prosecutor successfully overturned the ruling in September, allowing the case to proceed.

UD ALMERIA 2 ELCHE CF 1 This was a bitterly disappointing performance by Elche last Friday night, just as they needed a result to keep them right in contact with the promotion-chasing pack. It was a poor display by the Ilicitanos who just didn't know how to keep to ball, and the final scoreline was flattering to them. The encounter also ended on a sour note with Nino sent off in the dying moments for stamping on the foot of an Almeria player after play had been stopped. Almeria dominated the first half, but they fell behind through an Ximo Navarro own goal from an Elche corner in the 13th minute. They equalised though with an Antonio Puertas set-up with an excellent cross from Nano on the 28th minute mark, and then they just threw everything at Elche, who little to offer in return. In-form striker Quique gave Almeria a deserved lead 12 minutes into the second half, and the only surprise was that the home side didn't make the final victory margin bigger, as Juan Carlos made some great saves in the Elche goal. There was no hiding place for Elche coach Alberto Toril who was honest in admitting that his side played badly, which frustratingly always seems to happen as they are in no striking distance of making significant inroads in the Segunda division top pack of sides. Elche entertain Mallorca this Sunday with a noon kick-off, with both sides having 19 points to their name.

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique admits it is "worrying" that his side have only won half of their home games in La Liga so far. The reigning champions were held to a frustrating goalless draw by Malaga at the Nou Camp last Saturday afternoon, the third time in six matches they have dropped home points. Pique, who had a goal wrongly ruled out for offside and deserved a penalty when he was hauled down in the area by Mikel Villanueva, conceded there was concern in the home dressing room. He told Sport.es: "It's worrying that we have lost so many points at home. No one wanted a draw in a game which realistically we had to win." Barca were without Lionel Messi - at home with a vomiting bug - and the suspended Luis Suarez, but Pique said: "We are Barcelona and we cannot make excuses. We have players who are worth a lot of money and a budget which is outrageous compared to Malaga." The pressure on Malaga increased after Diego Llorente's 69th-minute dismissal. In those final 20 minutes, Pique had a goal disallowed when referee Ricardo de Burgos and his assistants thought they spotted an offside, and then he saw the referee reject his penalty claim for a clear foul by Villanueva. Barca thought they had won it when Neymar's header appeared goalbound in the 94th minute, but Carlos Kameni, who had produced a series of saves throughout the game, pulled off one more to claw it away at the near post. "With numerical superiority it has been easier to get on the attack, but it has not been so because Kameni has been very good, and we have also been denied a goal (for offside)," Pique added. Next up for Barcelona is a Sunday trip to San Sebastian to take on Real Sociedad before the big business of El Clasico against Real Madrid on December 3rd.

ATLETICO MADRID 0 REAL MADRID 3 Zinedine Zidane feels Cristiano Ronaldo is certain to win the Ballon d'Or again after his hat-trick sealed a Madrid derby win on Saturday. Ronaldo claimed his 39th career hat-trick as Real thrashed city neighbours Atletico Madrid at their Estadio Vicente Calderon home. The victory gave Real a four-point lead at the top of La Liga over Barcelona and puts them nine points clear of Atletico. And Real boss Zidane praised match-winner Ronaldo after the game: - "I've never had any doubts that Cristiano is the best. Tonight ends that debate, the Ballon d'Or will be for him," he said. "I had no doubt, and it is not the three goals he scored that will make me change my mind. He demonstrated it all last season, he demonstrates it every time. We expect a lot from him, but he is above everyone else." Real were dominant throughout and extended their unbeaten run to 29 games since losing to Atletico in February. Trailing to Ronaldo's deflected 23rd-minute free-kick, Atletico were on top at the start of the second half and Yannick Ferreira Carrasco and Antoine Griezmann went close to equalising. But Ronaldo converted a 71st-minute penalty after being tripped by Stefan Savic before completing his hat-trick from Bale's astute pass and took him past Alfredo Di Stefano's 17goal record in Madrid derbies. Real next entertain Sporting Gijón tomorrow afternoon (Saturday).

TOP & BOTTOM OF IT

Second-top plays second-bottom in the Premier League this weekend : Liverpool v Sunderland. Have the Black Cats finally got lucky? Last week’s thumping 3 – 0 win over Hull just could kick-start their season, and with Liverpool’s disappointing goalless draw at Southampton, it shows the brakes can be put on the Reds’ attack. On paper, it has to be a home win, but who knows?

Ivan Signed

30-year-old Slovakian defender Ivan Pecha has been unveiled as the latest signing for CD Torrevieja, as part of the growing international flavour to the squad. Pecha has played all around Eastern Europe for sides in Slovakia, Romania, Belarus, Estonia, Azerbaijan, and more recently for Motor Lublin in Poland (pictured in their kit). Pecha has actually been training with the Torrevieja squad for the last few weeks as he waited for his clearance papers to come through from Lublin, which they did a few days ago.

Information correct at time of publication but subject to change at short notice.

Hey, it’s not all about Donald Trump, you know – the US Soccer Federation have just fired Jurgen Klinnsman as their coach. He’s been replaced by LA Galaxy head coach, Bruce Arena, who was in charge (successfully) of the national side between 1998 and 2006. Up until recently, the odds on a Klinnsman replacement would have favoured the well-respected Bob Bradley (pictured), but lately in charge of bottom club Swansea, things have not been going well for the American. This Saturday in the Valleys, the Swans take on a stuttering Crystal Palace in the Premier League, also sweating on only 11 points along with Middlesborough and West Ham. Ironically, it only seems five minutes since the Eagles’ boss, Alan Pardew, was being tipped as the next England manager. The result of this clash will be very interesting, for both managers feeling the pinch, as well as everyone else at the worried clubs.

Leicester City sum up football nicely: funny, frenetic, foolish – and a few more ‘f’ words frequently. From fivethousand-to-one outsiders to history-makers in one season… eight years previously the club were playing in Division One, and it’s only three years ago since the homespun East Midland club were promoted to the mighty Premier League, managing to stay up in their first season. Then tipped to go down and not starting the new Prem season well, the Foxes got themselves a new manager: a genuinely ‘nice’ guy, and actually one without a wonderful record. Somehow then his modest-looking team, assembled from nowhere special and inexpensive began to click – and win… and win …and win. So many more domestic league games did they win, that the club amazingly won the Holy Grail that is the Premier League, which is one of the toughest in the world. That was an astounding achievement in today’s obscenely wealthy world. Thai-backed Leicester, with a team costing a mere 57 million pounds beat teams funded from mega-rich Arab backers, Russian oligarchs, American zillionaires, and all without paying huge amounts for top players – against all the odds. Quite rightly, the city of Leicester rejoiced and everyone concerned partied well into the close season. Despite huge speculation, only one key player departed in the close season to a money-no-object club, and with the huge bonus of now entering the mighty Champions League, Leicester began the new season with confidence, hope and excitement. Those faithful fans – and new ones – flocked to the excellent King Power stadium, looking forward with relish to another belting campaign, to once more participate in the top UK football league – with a few other admiring leagues looking on – playing the Foxes thrilling brand of swashbuckling football. So how are they doing, three months in? First the good news: on Tuesday in the Champions League the Blues beat Brugge 2 – 1 to win their group G, securing passage through to the prestigious final stages of Europe’s top competition. In doing so, Claudio Rainieri’s men beat Brugge twice, as well as Porto and FC Copenhagen, yielding 13 points from five games. There’s still one more match to play, but who cares, Leicester are through. In the New Year serious opposition will come in the frightening forms of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Atletico, PSG – oh, and some other Premier League opponents like Arsenal and Man City, but bridges can be crossed on arrival - and not right now, because… …the bad news is that back in the prestigious Prem, all is not going well. Last Saturday’s 2 – 1 defeat by Watford means the Foxes sit just two points above the Dreaded Drop Department. That was the second consecutive defeat, losses which have included matches against Hull City and West Bromwich, clubs which are not doing particularly well themselves. As the huge delight after another wildly-wonderful and successful Champions League result subsides, it’s back to Planet Earth – well, just off the M1 in the East Midlands – on Saturday as the Foxes gird themselves up to face fellow-scrappers Middlesborough , losers only 1-0 to table toppers Chelsea on Sunday. Now this result, albeit with a third of the season gone, is a real game-to-win, a six-pointer for both clubs for which the loser will have serious thoughts looking at the run-in to the festive season. There’s nowhere to hide in the Prem, and league tables never lie. As no European distractions free up top teams like Chelsea, and Liverpool to concentrate on the Prem, mere domestic survival must be the objective this season for Leicester - albeit interspersed with another European jaunt in the knock-out stages of the Champions League to a top soccer city for those faithful fans who recently could only dream of such adventures. Hey, remember those five-thousand-to-one odds? I wonder what the odds are on the Foxes winning the Champions League – and getting relegated? Don’t laugh, this is football – and anything could happen!

GRAND FINALE

This Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix sees the final Formula One drivers championship showdown between title leader Nico Rosberg, and three-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton, who trails his Mercedes teammate by 12 points. To take a fourth title, Hamilton has to win the race and hope Rosberg finishes lower than third. This is the third time in its eight years in F1 that Abu Dhabi will host the championship showdown.

NATHAN OUT

Nathan Hughes suffered a leg injury in training this weekend and will miss out on England’s autumn international tomorrow against Argentina. The Fijian-born player won his second cap last week against the country of his birth.

BRIDGING THE GAP Spurs are sitting four points and three places behind new Prem League leaders Chelsea, writes JOHN MCGREGOR, which means that Stamford Bridge is the setting for tomorrow evening’s Capital Match of the Day, which promises to be a cracker. Last weekend, Chelsea eased past modest Middlesborough (and Liverpool to go top), all thanks to another Costa cracker - that’s ten goals so far and it’s only November! Oh, and the Blues once-leaky defence? Six clean sheets from Toni Conte’s kids’ last six games – all wins - are mightily impressive stats – eh, Jose? Over in the Lillywhite corner, Tottenham had a serious setback on Tuesday, crashing out of the Champions League to Monaco, but back in the Prem last Saturday night, it was a different story. Mauricio Pochettino’s players left it late to break Hammers hearts, the Harry’s (one Winks, two Kanes) combining to seal Tottenham’s 3 – 2 win after twice being behind. Oh, and the number of Spurs Prem defeats so far? Nil, nada, zilch – game on! That Spurs result leaves beleaguered West Ham not a little worried. Poor Prem performances to date show only three wins and two draws from 12 games, just one point above the Dreaded Drop Department. On Sunday afternoon, strangely comes the first of two huge games for the Hammers against mighty Manchester United, both at Old Trafford. The first is in the Prem, followed three days later by a massive quarter final in the EFL Cup on Wednesday. Both teams need the league win badly, United to boost their fading title challenge and West Ham to survive. Jose Mourinho’s side will have played Feyenoord last night in the slightly undesirable Europa League: United’s presence in both the Europe League AND the EFL Cup is not really essential at a world-renowned club whose priorities must be performing in the Prem and qualifying for the Champions League. West Ham? Any kind of win will do for Bilic’s boys. More on this weekend’s Premier League games on Page 47.
