woman from the Orihuela Costa as been given a restraining order, community service, and a fine for biting her husband in an assault that happened on Sunday, with a hearing taking place in the Orihuela City courthouse (pictured) the following day. The man was also granted custody of their two children. The assault by the 30year-old woman on her 37year-old partner happened at their Orihuela Costa home, and came after a disagreement on her having access to the family car for her to move to Madrid at the weekend. The incident happened in front of the couple’s two youngsters, and also in front of the man’s mother who phoned the

local police. The nationality of the family has not been revealed. A verbal argument over the use of the car turned violent on the woman’s part as she bit her husband on his back, as well as hitting and scratching him all over his body. He did not resist her attack and officers took her to the Guardia Civil barracks in Pilar de la Horadada and charged her with domestic violence offences. Within 24 hours she was found guilty as charged and given a two-year restraining order of 300 metres in relation to her husband, his workplace, and the family home. That’s in addition to losing custody of her children, and having to pay over 700 euro of compensation to

A LOAD OF NOISE

ome of the nosiest road surfaces in the whole of Spain are in Alicante Province, with eight of out of the country's top worst offenders being found in the area. Top of the list is the CV763 that connects La Nucía with l'Alfas del Pi in the north, but that is closely followed by the CV-900 between Orihuela and Callosa de Segura, which is deemed to be the noisiest at night according to the Environment Ministry, as well as being second nosiest in the day! The measurements for the survey have been calculated on the basis

of the number of people living close to major highways, and the daytime and nighttime noise levels generated on the roads. Other offenders include the CV-935 between Almoradí and Los Montesinos, followed in fourth place by the CV-95, linking Orihuela and Torrevieja. The CV-945 (pictured) in the Los Montesinos area is also on the list, as well as the CV-91 route between Orihuela and Guardamar and the CV-920 from Jacarilla to Rojales. Experts say that using an absorbent asphalt surface will reduce noise levels as

well as the installation of screens to cut down on the decibels, as used on the AP7 in the Elche area. No cost-

ings for any improvements or what will be done with the survey's findings have been made apparent.

Spain's prime minister Mariano Rajoy says he hopes that the Brexit negotiations will mean "minimal disruption" for the European Union - and once they are over, the bloc can focus "on the real problems" that affect citizens, like healthcare, immigration, security and youth employment. His comments came after British prime minister Theresa May outlined her strategy for the forthcoming Brexit negotiations, which would include the UK pulling out of the single market. After meeting the

leaders of Spain's regional governments, Mariano Rajoy said "Europe is our past, present and future." He asked for Theresa May's government to be clear about the model of relationship it seeks for the new UK-EU partnership. Rajoy says: "We are ready to have an intense and good understanding in the future." He added that "all possibilities are open" as long as the four freedoms of movement, services, goods, capitals and people - are not negotiated separately with Britain.

fraud. They were "caught in the act" back in November as the Guardia Civil uncovered their operation and methods. One person would distract their victim with a conversation, whilst a second member of the trio would then lift the purse or wallet, and the third member would keep an eye out for any security guards or police officers. The gang would travel down from Alicante in hire cars and target elderly non-Spaniards who would be in the vicinity of ATM machines. They would chat to their "mark"

offering to help them use the ATM and would glance over to see them tap in their PIN number, before then lifting their wallet with the bank card inside. The arrested trio were caught on a series of security cameras across the area, including the Habaneras Shopping Centre in Torrevieja, with fifteen-hundred euro of illegal withdrawals being made from ATM machines, and nearly seven thousand euro being put onto the stolen cards through purchases. The trio have been made available to an Orihuela judge.

Three Spaniards who stole wallets from shoppers in commercial centres in Torrevieja, the Orihuela Costa, and Dolores have been arrested by the Guardia Civil. Two women aged 23 and 30, and a 40year-old man would travel down from Alicante City and then lift the wallets in distraction burglaries and then use bank and credit cards, which were in them, fraudulently. The Guardia said that they made illegal purchases amounting to over eight thousand euro. The trio have been charged with four counts of theft and two counts of

Snow fell and settled in some coastal districts of Alicante Province and the Murcia region for the first time in decades on Wednesday morning, with Torrevieja getting its first significant snowfall since

1926, like at La Mata beach with a very cold-looking Guardia Civil officer! The Mastral Project that monitors the weather in the Torrevieja area said that some flakes did fall in the city in the fifties and sixties

without settling, and so Wednesday’s fall, which did offer a covering for a time around the city, was the biggest since 1926, and an opportunity for people to see snow for the first time ever! The beaches on the Orihuela Costa as well as the Pilar de la Horadada area (photo on the AP-7 right); plus San Pedro del Pinatar and San Javier all got a rare dusting, but it was comparatively minor compared to the bigger falls in the northern areas of Alicante Province around the Marina Alta, which led to road and school closures.

Respect Row

Orihuela opposition councillor, María García of the socialist PSOE party, has accused the PP-led council's government team of a "lack of respect" by not convening a heritage committee meeting at her party's request to find out why the authority did not appeal last autumn over the status of a local walkway. García says that rules have been broken over calling a meeting in

response to her party's call. The long running row over access on the Paseo between Aguamarina and Cabo Roig took a major turn last November, after the council failed to appeal to the Supreme Court over a lower court ruling that decided that the walkway was on private land and that residents had the right to seal it off, two years after Orihuela council

moved in and took a wall down on the walkway. María García says she wants answers from heritage councillor Rafael Almagro as to why no appeal was made, and what advice was given as to the appropriate cause of action. The PSOE have claimed that the court ruling was sent in a document to the council, and just lay in a drawer as the 15 day appeal deadline passed.

I’m In Charge

Control of Almoradí council switched on Monday, as expected, with the PSOEled authority losing control to a Partido Popular / Ciudadanos alliance, following a censure vote. The PP’s María Gómez

takes over as mayor from Jaime Perez, with María Quiles of the centre Ciudadanos party becoming her deputy. The change in control happened after Ciudadanos switch their support from the

PSOE to the PP, with Gómez saying that she hoped a similar alliance would allow the PP to take over Torrevieja council, with Eduardo Dolón (who was present in the council chamber) becoming mayor again.

Stubbed Out

Two men of undeclared nationality have been arrested in the Valencian region as 475 thousand packets of contraband cigarettes were seized in an operation led by the National Police and the Tax Agency with help from the UK National Crime Agency (NCA). The NCA monitored the shipment of the cigarettes from the United Arab Emirates to the port of Valencia, from where they were transported to a ware-

house in Torrent. The contents had been officially declared as plastic boxes, and the two men were arrested with the goods next to them. The container was opened by officers and behind the initial stash of plastic boxes, there were thousands of cigarettes with no Spanish tax labels on them. Investigations are continuing to identify further members of the cigarette smuggling gang.

Weapons Haul

Spanish authorities have seized around 12 thousand weapons some of which were capable of bringing down aircraft, with the haul said to be worth around 10 million euro on the black market. The National Police arrested four men and woman – all Spanish nationals – who had been operating a sophisticated trafficking network in several provinces across the country under the front of a historical weapons workshop that bought supposedly decorative firearms. The purchased weapons were then restored and sold on the black market throughout Europe.

Among the weapons seized were vintage Smith & Wesson revolvers, CETME, Bergmann, and Beretta rifles, and even heavier anti-aircraft machine guns. The gang members, who were arrested in Cantabria, Girona, and Vizcaya, ran what the police called a "sophisticated and fully-equipped" underground repair workshop, where officers found thousands of spare parts used in gun repair, as well as stamps and certificates for creating fake documentation for the firearms. About 80 thousand euro in cash was also discovered.

Butano Hike

The cost of bottled butane gas went up by five percent on Tuesday, just in time for this week’s cold spell of weather. The price hike only applies to gas in orange bottles – the lighter-weight silver-coloured bottles are supplied by private firms and not subject to state control, meaning their costs can be set by the distributor. Gas bottles have now risen by a total of 14.5 percent since July and the off-the-shelf price is 12.89€ – although those who order theirs via a contract with fuel companies and have them delivered will typically pay a few euros more. Despite the rise, bottled butane gas remains well below the price of 17.50€ that it retailed at until March 2015.

Parking Idea

Elche's tourism department says that they want to create a motor van park in the city in order to attract tourists. Councillor Mireia Mollà says a site that would offer free parking for up to 48 hours ought to be found as close to the city centre as possible, and that it could be operational by the summer of 2018. Councillor Mollà said that a van park would not be competition for local hotels, and that she would travel to the northern part of the Valencia region to Castellón to look at a park that is running there.

Joining Forces

Cartagena and Torrevieja are to boost tourism involving the two municipalities by organising trips between the two areas. Torrevieja tourism councillor Fanny Serrano and Cartagena deputy mayor Ana Belén Castejón were both at the recent Oslo Tourist Festival, and agreed that both their councils and tourist information offices should co-ordinate a programme of visits for holidaymakers, with Cartagena offering history and museums, and Torrevieja natural beauty in the shape of the La Mata park.

Brothels Busted

A British man has been arrested by the National Police and accused of running a network of brothels which included a 15-year-old prostitute. The girl was working at a club in the Malaga area, which was raided by the police. The National Police said the gang running the brothels had 150 women working for them at six clubs in Sevilla, Malaga, Almeria and Murcia. The unnamed 36-year-old British man has been described as the business partner of the other head of the organisation, a 35-year-old Spaniard from the Costa del Sol. The gang managed their brothels as if they were hotels, giving the women that worked for them a percentage of the earnings from each of their clients as part of conditions that the National Police described as “abusive.”

Avenida Accidents

A survey commissioned by Torrevieja council says that Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas has the most road accidents in the city, as well as the largest count of speeding motorists. One hundred and ninty seven thousand vehicles a day use Torrevieja's roads, according to a newly produced transport plan, put together from figures supplied by the local police. The city has an

annual average of thirteenhundred road accidents per year, resulting in 270 injuries. Statistically, Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas, was the most dangerous road, over a four-year period, 29 people being injured using it, including one fatality. Thirty percent of drivers ignored speed restrictions on the road and also on the adjoining Avenida de Alfred Nobel-Carretera del Torrejón.

Curtain Up?

Torrevieja's Teatro Municipal will open “as soon as possible”, according to Councillor José Hurtado, after it was shut down 18 months ago over safety concerns. Despite hopeful predictions from the council that the facility would reopen last summer, nothing happened as a dispute ensued with the architect, in addition to claims that the auditorium had been functioning without an appropriate license. Now Councillor Hurtado has said that the Torrevieja government team had approved a budget of 40 thousand euro for safety work on the theatre's staircase, and that once the work had been

completed, the building will reopen. Hurtado blamed the delays on "bureaucratic and technical issues". Eighteen months ago, the council said that basic licensing and safety work needed to be carried out, which it claimed the previous Partido Popular administration failed to do. The authority said the theatre was opened eleven years ago without any final completion certification. In April 2016, the council said that it was looking to reopen the complex in June, but at that time, the original architect had still to sign appropriate papers for improvements to be made to the facility.

School Changes

The first phase of the three-million-euro rebuilld of the Poeta Miguel Hernández school in Rojales (formerly known as the Príncipe de España school) has finished, with pupils enjoying their newly renovated classrooms after the recent holiday break. Construction will now

begin on the new main building, which will include classrooms as well as offices and a dining room. The third phase, which will be concluded at the start of the 2018/19 school year, will see the demolition of the old main building and the construction of a sports hall.

Parents, teachers, pupils, as well as local politicians, had been campaigning for years about the safety problems in the old complex that was not designed to cater for around five hundred pupils, with serious leaks and falling masonry amongst a long list of complaints.

A Real Cutie Madrid Zoo's baby panda cub, born in August, is to be called Chulina, which translates as ‘cutie’ in English. The name also pays tribute to Chulin, the first panda born in captivity in Europe, at the same zoo back in 1983. Chulina was the first female cub born in captivity in Madrid weighing in at just 180 grams. Chulina was conceived naturally by two pandas on loan from China since 2007, and at a special ceremony last week, China's ambassador to Spain, Lv Fan, said she was the fruit of both countries' friendship and research into pandas.‘

Help Yourself Five ex-managers of the north-western bank Novacaixagalicia have been given two-year prison sentences for giving themselves multi million 'golden handshakes' before they left the bank. Their early retirement packages went against company policy and came right at the height of the

financial crisis. None of the five has refunded the money, as they were initially instructed to do by the National Court, and they all feature in other legal cases currently open. Bank Novacaixagalicia received a massive nine-billion-euro bail-out from the government to stop it going under.

Let Battle Commence The former socialist leader in the Basque region, Patxi López, has become the first person to throw his hat into the ring to take over the national leadership of the PSOE. López has called for a “return to the basics of socialism” and a hard line against the Partido Popular government. It’s been a bad time for the PSOE in recent months, including a damaging battle for control that led to the ousting of their former leader Pedro Sánchez in October. López, a former regional president of the Basque country, said it had been a “mistake” for PSOE to allow the formation of a minority government under Mariano Rajoy, prime minister in the autumn. The party should not provide “painkillers for the poli-

Migrant Tragedy Seven bodies of African migrants were found last weekend off the southern coast of Spain after their raft sank in the high seas. One of the deceased was from North Africa and the other six were sub-Saharans, according to the Guardia Civil, with the bodies being washed up in the Algeciras area in the province of Cadiz. It is believed that the craft which sank was carrying 11 would-be immigrants, and at around the same time, another raft was found off the coast of the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on the northern Moroccan coast. It was carrying eight people, one of whom had died.

tics of the right”, Mr López told a news conference in Madrid. Other expected candidates are the Andalucia president Susana Diaz and ex-PSOE leader Pedro Sánchez, who has been touring Spain trying to drum

up support from party members. All candidates must declare by the end of March, with primaries set to take place in May. The winning candidate will be chose in mid-June during the annual PSOE congress.

Robbers Rumbled

The National Police have arrested 61 Georgian mafia members specialising in house burglaries, with a faction operating in Alicante Province. The operation was carried out over the span of several months with the help of Europol, and the French and Georgian police. The criminal organisation consisted of nine groups operating in Madrid, with links to Malaga, Sevilla, Sabadell, Barcelona, and Bilbao, as well as Alicante. Most of the arrested were Georgian nationals, along

with eight Spanish nationals. An increase of house burglaries led the police to open an investigation at the start of 2016, which resulted in operation "Aikon I," where nearly 50 suspects were arrested. However, the illicit activity continued, prompting the police to launch operation "Aikon II", when more arrests were made. Police also searched 26 houses, where they seized cash, vehicles, tobacco, jewellery as well as picks and false keys used for burglaries,

A Strange Thing

Last month was the thirdwarmest December of the 21st century in Spain and 58 percent drier than average across the country, despite the torrential rain and flash floods hitting the Costa Blanca and Mar Menor during the middle of the month, according to the State meteorological agency, AEMET. Temperatures across Spain were actually 0.6ºC higher than the norm for the last month of autumn and

first 10 days of winter, with an average nationwide of 8.6ºC, as opposed to the typical 8ºC seen between 1981 and 2010. Between Friday, December 16th and Thursday, December 22nd, record amounts of rain swept across the Balearic Islands, as well as the Murcia (picture from Los Alcazares) and Valencia regions, but elsewhere in Spain, it hardly rained at all.

Hotel Row

Orihuela mayor Emilio Bascuñana has rubbished opposition claims that he submitted expense claims to the council for a 470-euro overnight hotel stay in Granada last year. Bascuñana said the accusations from the socialist PSOE were false over his stay at the Hesperia Granada hotel, with the Mayor attending a function involving dignitaries from the Andalucian city. Independent investigations do indeed show that a nightly stay at the hotel come out between 70 and 100 euro depending on the class of accommodation.

Cover It Up

The unveiling of a new Donald Trump waxwork at the Madrid Wax Museum (Museo de Cera) was interrupted on Tuesday morning by a topless female protester from the feminist group "Femen". With the words "Grab back" written across her chest and "Grab patriarchy by the balls" on her back, the protester grabbed a lower portion of the Trump waxwork, while

Bullied To Death

repeatedly shouting the same phrase. Amidst farcical scenes, Gonzalo Presa of the museum tried to cover the protester up with a bunch of red, white and blue balloons and then with the red baseball cap the Trump waxwork was wearing, before security personnel were finally able to lead her away after a protest which lasted over a minute.

Bird Alert

Spain has logged two cases of the highly contagious H5N8 bird flu virus in wild geese in the northern part of the country, according to the agriculture ministry. Two infected wild geese were found dead in the Castile and Leon region, the ministry said, adding that it had increased surveillance of

poultry farms in the area. The H5N8 strain, which is deadly for poultry but has not been found in humans, has spread across Europe and the Middle East since late last year. This led to the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of poultry and the confinement of flocks indoors.

The National Police in Murcia have said that they have evidence that a 13year-old girl, Lucia Garcia, committed suicide because she had been bullied at her school in Murcia City. “Her parents (Menárguez y Joaquín García), the regional government and practically everyone else has said so,” said Cirilio Durán, of the National Police at a news conference last Friday. It will now be up to the prosecution to determine the severity and extent of the abusive treatment the teenager had to put up with daily from her classmates, the two suspected main culprits of which have since been suspended. Lucia's funeral took place last week. Lucía, from the village of Aljucer, was picked on for several years with insults about her appearance, being called 'fat' and 'ugly', to the point where she believed herself to be both and suffered a crushing lack of self-confidence. The bullying started when she was in primary school and continued after she moved from the Licenciado Francisco Cascales high school in Murcia to the Ingeniero Juan de la Cierva de Patiño secondary school in the city, where the bullies attended. Lucía had written a sui-

cide note at the end of December, which was found by a janitor at her former high school, and was handed in to the head teacher. It was then passed to her parents. Lucía's schools had been made aware of the problem, and she was being closely monitored at the new centre to ensure she was safe and that any incidences would be stamped on. One of the pupils had been suspended for five days and another for a day, several months before Lucía took her own life, and a report from the head teacher said they both 'admitted to their behaviour' and 'promised not to bother Lucía any more'. Lucía's parents, the police, the education community and Save the Children have urged anyone who suffers from, or witnesses bullying to report

it immediately 'to prevent more lives being lost'. “What is certainly clear is that, it seems, and her parents have said so, that the young girl suffered psychological problems arising from the pressure that some of her classmates at school were exerting on her some months ago rather than very recently,” said Cirilio Durán of the National Police. He claims 'neither the police nor the prosecution' were aware she was being bullied, and says the incidents happened 'over six months ago in a different school'. “Actions were inflicted on the schoolgirl which could lead to a situation of great conern,” Durán says, adding that it will be 'up to the mental health professionals' to explain why the teen was in counselling before her death.

Two hundred and fifty one euro was raised at a special Fun Quiz last weekend at the Café-Bar Almoradi on Calle Donadores in aid of sufferers of Huntington's disease. The quiz, devised by Christine and Martin Watkins, was a very closefought contest, which was narrowly won by Mazza's Masterminds, who were “surprised and delighted” by their victory, and were then presented with their prizes by Christine. Huntington's disease is a hereditary terminal illness

affecting both men and women, which destroys the pathways between the brain and the rest of the body, resulting in uncontrollable movements, loss of speech, incontinence and loss of memory function, to name but a few symptoms. It also causes changes in personality and depression. The Darling Buds of May Keith Littlewood, Regional Manager Costa Cálida

For the first time since the Brexit vote, some clarity was delivered in what can only be described as a MargaretThatcheresque speech this week thrusting a 12point plan in front of the world that showed strength and determination and made it very clear that the UK will not be

pushed around. Theresa May does hold the Trump card now. Donald Trump, who has always been a huge supporter of Brexit, is about to enter office and has already indicated that the UK will be at the front of the queue when it comes to making new trade deals - excellent news from what is

essentially the world’s biggest customer. Already a positive feeling has been gathered in the markets; FTSE is up to record levels and the FTSE 100 has remained at or above the 7,000 level for a few weeks now. In the currency exchange markets, the pound has risen against most currencies this week after languishing in the doldrums the last few months, and even opposition party members giving praise to Theresa May. More remarkable, German politicians came out and praised the clarity of Theresa May’s plan of action. The market’s biggest enemy is uncertainty, and if the UK moves forward in the way in which Theresa May has described, then there could be huge potential gains to come for investors. Many companies are cash-rich and already dividend payments have been increasing in the FTSE 100 companies, but what is even more important to me is the potential for growth in actual share prices. Sixteen years have passed since the FTSE all time high of 6930 in December 1999 (that is the last millennium), so for me there looks to be some making up to do and the markets are well overdue a long bull run. It’s certainly turned colder this week, in case you haven’t noticed! If you’re concerned about your furry friends and wondering if you’re doing enough, here are some tips about how to keep your dog warm during this cold spell. Don’t forget that certain dogs are more affected by the cold than others, particularly older pets and/or those with certain ailments, like arthritis. Many dogs feel the cold as much as their owners do, especially when they are not used to the cold. However, other dogs have been bred to deal with the cold better than any human ever could. In order to keep your specific dog warm through the winter months, it is important to think about their breed and their health, while also remembering that it's worth your time to make sure your pup stays nice and warm all winter. TAKE SHORTER WALKS. Don't try to take your dog on the same length walks as during warmer weather. A shorter walk can still accomplish enough exercise and relief breaks without causing your dog (and you) to become too cold. Even if you are indoors, keep exercising. Play indoor games with your dog, such as fetch, tug-of-war, hiding toys, and if it's possible to let them run around inside, then do so GOOD GROOMING. Avoid trimming, shaving or cutting your dog's hair because a dog's full weight coat is his source of warmth during winter. It is important to maintain a good grooming regime, combing out knots and brushing the coat thoroughly, through winter too, as matted hair is less efficient at keeping out the cold, and does not insulate the dog as well. Consistent grooming can alleviate dander problems in dogs living through dry winters, should this be a problem for your dog JACKETS AND SWEATERS. If your home is a little chilly, cute jackets and sweaters can keep your dogs warm. They are especially good for small or toy dogs, dogs without long hair (for example, whippets and greyhounds), and old or sick dogs. One of the key signs that your dog may need some clothing is if a dog is

LEO Leo is a gorgeous dog that loves to play and will quite happily sit on your lap weighing in at around eight kilos. He’s around three years old and gets his confidence from other dogs, but becomes uncertain when they are not around. He will need time to settle in and once he has done that, you will have a friend for life. For more on Leo, please call PEPA helpline on 650 304 746 or email p.e.p.a.animalcharity@gmail.com

LOLO Lolo is a male five-year-old old small crossbreed who came to the SAT kennels in a thin condition and he did have a flea infestation which was quite severe. shivering, just like a human! BATHING TIPS. Make sure your dog is completely dry before letting him or her outside. Give fewer baths during cold snaps, or consider skipping baths altogether. Remember, in cold weather it takes the dog longer to dry off. This will help you to keep them away from severe cold problems. BEDDING. His bed should be at least three inches off the cold floor to avoid drafts. Low platforms made of a light wood or aluminium frame with canvas stretched over it suit these pets just fine. PROVIDE MORE FOOD. Dogs use up more calories in the winter trying to stay warm. Feed him a little more in the winter months, especially if he spends a lot of time outside. USE A HOT WATER BOTTLE OR SNUGGLE DISC. If your home is chilly, you can keep your pet warm by using a hot water bottle under his bed or even a snuggle disk, which is a manufactured disc that is heated in a microwave oven and can maintain heat for hours. BEWARE OF OVERFEEDING. It is important for your dog to eat regularly and well during colder months, in order to keep up energy and warmth. However, an indoor dog does not need increased food amounts over the winter. Doing so can risk creating an overweight dog. More food for a dog is only justifiable for dogs living outdoors all of the time and for dogs who are especially active during the winter months. Talk to your vet about your dog's particular energy needs. GUARD AGAINST WINTER ILLNESS. As with humans, dogs can fall ill during the colder months, especially when cold. Respiratory infections in damp climates, and the consumption of toxic substances are some of the principal concerns. AILMENT WATCH. Your dog's arthritis and osteoarthritis can be exacerbated by cold weather. Talk to your vet about medication, treatment options, and ways to keep your arthritic dog fit and warm through winter. TREAT TIME. Don't forget the occasional special treat and the belly rub. Nothing warms your dog's heart more.

Roll Fall

The number of youngsters going to school in Spain has dropped by 51 thousand in this current academic year, due to the falling birth rate, according to figures from the education ministry in Madrid. The biggest impact has been in the three to six-yearold group, with statistics showing a reduction of nearly four percent. Experts say the birth rate fall is the main factor, but also point to the number of non-Spanish families leaving the country due dwindling job opportunities.

Pirate Protest

A 17-kilometre tailback was created on Monday from Barcelona airport to the city centre and beyond, when taxi drivers staged a slow-crawl protest over the local council's alleged failure to clamp down on 'pirate' cabbies and cars

hired out with a driver. They claimed that 14 thousand families in the area live off the income of legitimate taxi operators and are suffering financially because of what they described as “professional intrusion”.

World's Most Valuable Bathtub Goes to Dubai

Known for designing the world’s most exquisite bathroom fixtures, meticulously crafted from gemstones such as amethyst, rock crystal and malachite, the Florence-based company has for over 100 years been dedicated to Italian style and Florentine craftsmanship, creating legendary pieces reminiscent of the grandest European palaces.

‘Baldi bathtubs are truly jewels for the home,” says Luca Baldi, CEO of Baldi. “Each bathtub is comparable to a Renaissance creation, a work of art and craft that testifies to the beauty of Nature meeting Design. Only three bathtubs have been made until today and they were all carved from solid blocks found in the Brazilian Amazon Forest by our scouts. All of them are one-of-a-kind, as it is the Nature that is ruling the design.” Baldi recently sold a bathtub carved from a single 10-ton Amazonian crystal to socialite Tamara Ecclestone for $1,000,000. The three-person tub was sculpted with diamond cuts, while the partial rough edges of the tub enhance the natural beauty of the living crystal. A similar rock crystal tub will be available in some of the Sapphire villas at XXII Carat Villas on the Palm Jumeriah. Other Baldi baths at XXII Carat Villas Dubai will be carved from rose quartz and green quartz with gold trim, using adhoc gemstones to create rare and prestigious bathrooms fit for royalty. XXII Carat Villas is a development of 22 villas offering the ultimate luxury in beachfront resort-style living on the Palm Jumeirah next to One and Only the Palm. The private beachfront gated community comprises uniquely designed seven-bedroom villas ranging from 8,000 to 13,000 square feet with dramatic views of the Dubai city skyline. Developed by The Forum Group, XXII Carat Villas bring the finest European building and finish standards to Dubai. “We are proud that XXII Carat will be the first to have Baldi’s Jewels for the Home bathtubs, we have scoured Europe for the finest materials and finishes for every aspect of our villas,” says Anton Yachmenev, Managing Director of Forum Group. “We believe the property market in Dubai is ready for the finest quality of construction and interiors set like a diamond in the most superb location on the Palm.”

How To Grow Your Own Microgreens And Save A Ton Of Money

For someone who has never grown a thing, planting a seed into soil feels absolutely intimidating. It’s an incredibly simple act and it happens in the natural world every second, yet we’ve gotten to a place in our modern world where growing things feels very foreign. It’s time we change that. Let’s do that with microgreens. Microgreens are basically just younger versions of what we call baby greens. They’re budding versions of arugula, Swiss chard, mustard, beetroot and other salad greens. They’ve become trendy in upscale dining, and there’s a reason why: they are delicious. The tiny leaves are tender and full of flavour — and they’re packed full of nutrition. They make wonderful additions to savoury dishes like eggs, sandwiches and salmon fillet. There is one downfall to microgreens: they’re incredibly expensive to buy. That’s why you have to grow your own. You only have to keep the plants alive for two weeks before you can harvest them. So even if you have a brown thumb, you’ve got this. You don’t need a garden to do it, you can grow some on your window ledge. So now for the nitty gritty of it: how to get it done. First, you’ll need some seeds. You can find those at your local plant store. Next, you’ll need a small container with good ventilation at the bottom — you can use anything from clay pots to the plastic containers your baby spinach leaves were stored in — and potting soil. Fill your container with about two inches of moistened potting soil and flatten it. Scatter the seeds on top, gently push them into the soil and lightly dust with about 1/8-inch layer of soil. Delicately water them — we like to use a spray bottle to give them a soft mist. Keep them by a window that gets a lot of light, or place them under a grow light, and watch them grow. It’s that simple. Some plants sprout in as few as two days.

Peruvian Chicken Soup with Quinoa Peruvian food is on trend at the moment and super delicious. Even Paddington would have given up his marmalade sandwiches for this tasty soup. When poaching the chicken it’s well worth straining the broth as we suggest. This gets rid of the starchy gunk and gives you a fresher-tasting soup. INGREDIENTS 1.5 litres chicken stock 4 chicken thighs or 2 chicken breasts, skin on, bone in 2 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, thinly sliced 2 celery sticks, thinly sliced 1 red pepper, deseeded and sliced 100g quinoa, rinsed and soaked for 5 minutes 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tbsp Amarillo chilli sauce, or similar mild chilli sauce 1 bay leaf 1 sprig of fresh oregano 1 large sweet potato, diced large bunch of coriander, roughly chopped lime wedges, to serve sea salt and freshly ground black pepper METHOD Pour the chicken stock into a large saucepan and bring it to the boil, then add the chicken. Turn the heat down low and simmer gently for about 10 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through. Skim off any foam that collects on the surface, then remove the chicken and set it aside. Strain the chicken broth through a sieve lined with a double layer of muslin or cheesecloth into a bowl,

then pour it back into the saucepan. Heat the olive oil in the same pan and add the onion, celery and red pepper. Cook them over a medium heat for about 5 minutes, just to start the softening process, then add the quinoa. Continue to toast the quinoa until it starts to smell nutty, then add the garlic and chilli sauce. Cook for another minute or so. Pour the chicken stock back into the saucepan, then add the herbs and season with salt and pepper. Bring the soup to the boil, then turn the heat down and simmer for 15 minutes. Add the sweet potato and simmer for a further 5 minutes. Remove the skin and bone from the chicken and cut the flesh into slices. Add them to the soup and simmer for a few minutes to warm through. Taste for seasoning and add more if necessary. Remove the bay leaf and oregano, then stir in the chopped coriander. Serve in bowls with lime wedges on the side.

New Movie 'The Founder' Explores McDonald's Origins "Nothing in the world is more common than unsuccessful men with talent," is a theme so central to The Founder that director John Lee Hancock uses it twice in his new, thought-provoking movie about Ray Kroc that opened in the US this week. Kroc, of course, was hardly unsuccessful -- he was the architect of the McDonald's empire -- some 36,615 restaurants in 118 countries at last count. What Kroc most definitely was not, however, was McDonald's founder. Rather, he was a selfmade entrepreneur who saw an opportunity for wealth and power and zestfully seized it, ethics and integrity be damned. In a nutshell, the story ("based on a true story") is this: In 1954, Kroc, a failing milkshake machine salesman, was a 52-year-old guy wandering the desert, literally, driving across huge swaths of the American Midwest and West, looking for a lucky strike. It came in the form of two well-meaning but not particularly businesssavvy brothers, Dick and Mac McDonald, and their walk-up hamburger stand in San Bernardino, Calif. The stand had reached such success that the brothers had ordered an unheardof eight milkshake machines from Kroc's company. Kroc made a beeline to California to sniff out the rea-

sons behind that success, and discovered the brothers' pared-down menu -- hamburgers, condiments ("two pickles, shot of ketchup"), fries, sodas and shakes, plus the "Speedee System" -- a burger assembly method the brothers had devised to deliver meals in under 30 seconds. Gone were the features sucking up revenue at America's then-iconic driveins: parking lots, carhops, long waits and multiple-item menus. Did somebody say McDonald's? Customers couldn't get enough of the new model's fare. Nor could Kroc (Michael Keaton), whose character evolves from aggressive entrepreneur to unscrupulous corporate thief as he turns from just franchising new outlets for the McDonalds to acquiring hundreds of parcels (then, thousands) for himself and collecting lease fees from franchisees. Entrepreneur spoke to The Founder director Hancock (The Blind Side, Saving Mr. Banks) for insight on how he approached Kroc's evolution, to a businessman who stole the company out from under the McDonald brothers, then declared himself the company "founder." Here's a partial transcript: We're all about extoling entrepreneurs here. But the Ray Kroc you present in the film's second half is beyond

distasteful. He talks about business being "war" and how, if a competitor were drowning, he'd "put a hose in his mouth." He opens a McDonald's directly across the street from the brothers' restaurant, driving them out of business. He steals a franchisee's wife -- and more. So, in your mind, is this what real "success" looks like in America? Or, are you more an advocate of the McDonald brothers' style of success, insisting on quality control and slow expansion? I’m conflicted about Kroc, because as much as I don’t think I would have gone down the same path as him, it’s obvious I wouldn’t have grown the business the way he did and wouldn’t have been nearly as successful. The things I admire about him are, one, he came from

nothing. Two, from all reports, everyone who ever met him said he was the hardest-working person they ever met. So these are all things to admire, and there’s no doubt that it was a very capitalist venture. But so was the McDonald brothers'; the goal for both was to make money, but theirs were different philosophies about how to go about doing it and what their own personal responsibility was. So you're more an advocate for the McDonalds' style? Personally, I would side with the McDonald brothers, and I think there are growth models that can back that up. You don’t have to be a little burger stand in the desert. I think if the McDonalds had maintained control of their

operation ... they weren’t against growth. They just wanted more control. I suspect if [the company] had remained in the family, they might be In-N-Out Burger today, or something. [Kroc] recognized that the McDonald brothers were on to something. They them-

selves had failed with their very first franchises by not having owner-operators, having only owners; and the operation slid. And another thing to admire about Kroc: He recognized rather quickly that he wanted people with more skin in the game than just their money.

Chicken Burgers These are a refreshing change from the usual beef, and healthy too. If you don’t want to chop the chicken yourself, you could ask your butcher to mince it coarsely for you. It’s important to include some of the chicken fat in the mix to keep the burgers nice and juicy. INGREDIENTS 500g boneless, skinless chicken thighs 1 small onion, very finely chopped a few sprigs of tarragon, finely chopped (optional) 1 tsp dried oregano olive oil 4 burger buns, cut in half 1 tbsp mayonnaise 1 tbsp mustard lettuce leaves 1 large tomato, sliced sea salt and freshly ground black pepper METHOD Make sure the chicken thighs are well chilled, or even partially frozen, as this will make them much easier to chop. Using a very sharp knife, dice the chicken as finely as possible, making sure you include any fat that’s attached to the thighs. To check you have chopped the chicken finely enough, squeeze some of it together in your hand – it should clump into a ball quite easily. Put the chicken into a bowl and add the onion, some of the tarragon, if using, and the oregano. Add half a teaspoon of salt and some pepper. Divide the chicken into 4 portions and shape into burgers about 2cm thick. Heat a large griddle or a frying pan to medium hot. Brush the burgers with a little oil, then place them on the griddle or pan, spaced well apart if possible. Leave them to cook for 4 minutes, without moving them, then carefully lift them off with a metal spatula and turn them over. The burgers should be well seared and lift off easily; if they don’t, leave them for a little longer. Cook them on the other side for 4 minutes, then carefully flip them over again and cook for another minute on each side. Once the burgers are cooked through, remove them from

the griddle or pan and set them aside to rest for a couple of minutes. Toast the cut side of the burger buns very lightly. Whisk the mayonnaise with the mustard and stir in the rest of the tarragon, if using. Spread this on one side of the buns. Add the burgers with lettuce and slices of tomato.

If you like, you can add more herbs or some chilli or citrus zest to your burger mix. Or keep the burgers plain and add a rasher or two of bacon or some avocado slices or even some creamy blue cheese. The possibilities are endless.

Chocolate and Orange Soufflé with Grand Marnier Sauce This is a classy number. Dark chocolate and orange are a favourite combo and you could also make these with orange-flavoured choc. You’ll need four 150ml ramekins or six smaller ones. INGREDIENTS 25g butter, softened, for greasing 1 tbsp caster sugar, for dusting 150ml whole milk 100ml double cream 150g dark chocolate, broken into pieces grated zest of 1 orange 3 large eggs, separated 75g caster sugar 15g cornflour 15g plain flour 10g cocoa Grand Marnier sauce 300ml orange juice juice of ½ lemon 100g sugar 2 tbsp Grand Marnier METHOD First prepare the ramekins. Rub softened butter over the insides of the ramekins, then use a pastry brush to go over it with upward strokes; this helps the soufflés rise. Dust the insides with the sugar until well coated. Leave the ramekins in the freezer until you need them. Put the milk in a saucepan and warm it almost to boiling point. Remove the pan from the heat and set it aside. In a separate pan, heat the cream and when it is blood temperature, remove the pan from the heat and add the chocolate. Let the chocolate melt completely, then beat until thick and glossy. Stir in the orange zest and set the mixture aside to cool. Whisk the yolks with 50g of the sugar until creamy. Sieve the cornflour, plain flour and cocoa into a bowl, then sprinkle this mixture over the egg yolks and sugar and beat until smooth. Pour the milk over the egg and sugar mixture, stirring constantly, then tip it all back into the saucepan. Stir over a low heat until the mixture has thickened to a custard, then remove the pan from the heat and leave to

cool, whisking regularly to make sure it doesn’t develop a skin. Beat in the chocolate and cream mixture. Preheat the oven to 190°C/Fan 170°C/Gas 5 and put a baking tray in the oven to heat up. Whisk the egg whites to the soft peak stage, then start beating in the remaining sugar a teaspoon at a time until the mixture is stiff and glossy. Add the egg whites to the chocolate mixture a third at a time, folding it in with a metal spoon as carefully as you can so you don’t lose too much volume. and incorporating it fully before adding the next lot. Divide the mixture between the ramekins, making sure each is filled to the top, then scrape a palette knife over the top to make it perfectly flat. Run your finger around the rim

of each ramekin to create a small groove round the top. This will help the soufflés to rise evenly. Put the ramekins on the preheated baking tray and bake for 16–18 minutes (depending on the size of your ramekins) until well risen with a slight wobble in the middle. You should get a good rise of at least 3–4cm. For the sauce, put the orange juice, lemon juice and sugar into a saucepan. Heat gently, stirring constantly until the sugar has dissolved, then turn up the heat a little and simmer for a few minutes until it is syrupy – it will thicken a little more as it cools. Stir in the Grand Marnier, a tablespoon at a time. Serve the soufflés immediately with the sauce on the side to pour into the centre.

Sedentary lifestyle in older women 'ages body cells' Women who lead a sedentary lifestyle have faster-ageing cells than those who exercise every day, research suggests. Research on 1,500 women aged 64 to 95 found those who spent many hours sitting and exercised for less than 40 minutes a day had cells that were biologically eight years older. As people age, their cells age, causing DNA protectors to shorten and fray. But health and lifestyle factors may speed up the process, researchers from California said. Even in old age, it was important to keep active and avoid sitting for more than 10 hours a day, they said. During ageing, tiny caps on the ends of DNA strands naturally shorten. These telomeres - which have been likened to the plastic tips of shoelaces - are there to prevent chromosomes from deteriorating. Telomere length is one indicator of biological age, which does not always match chronological age. Shortened telomeres have been linked with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and major cancers. How much regular exercise people do now also appears to be a factor in their length. To track the women's movements in the study, they wore wore an accelerometer on their right hip for seven days in a row, during the day and night. They were also asked to complete questionnaires on their activity. Exercise benefits Dr Aladdin Shadyab, lead study author, from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine, said: "We found that women who sat for longer did not have shorter telomere length if they exercised for at least 30 minutes a day. "Discussions about the benefits of exercise should start when we are young, and physical activity should continue to be part of our daily lives as we get older, even at 80 years old."

The study is published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. NHS Choices advises older adults to break up long periods of sitting with light activity because "sedentary behaviour is now considered an independent risk factor for ill health." It says adults aged 65 or older who are generally fit and mobile should try to do:

at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity, such as cycling or walking, every week strength exercises on two or more days a week that work all the major muscles (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms) Older adults at risk of falls, or with poor balance, should also do exercises to improve balance and co-ordination at least twice a week.

A third of adults treated for asthma 'may not have the disease' “A third of those diagnosed don't have the condition," according to recent reports. A study in Canada found about one-third of adults diagnosed with asthma in the past five years showed no signs of the condition on retesting. Asthma has become a common condition, and can cause serious illness or death if not treated. But symptoms come and go, meaning it's not always easy to diagnose reliably. This study found people whose asthma could not be confirmed, despite a recent diagnosis, were less likely to have had objective tests of their lung function. About one-third were able to safely stop taking asthma medicines under medical supervision. In the UK, guidelines recommend doctors use spirometry tests in patients with symptoms that might be asthma when the doctor is not sure. A spirometer is a device that measures how much air you can breathe out of your lungs. New guidelines on the best tests for asthma are being developed, but doctors are currently advised to start patients on treatment right away if there is a high likelihood of

asthma based on their symptoms. If you're not sure whether you need to continue taking asthma medication, talk to your GP. It's not advisable to cut down asthma medicine or stop it suddenly without medical supervision, as asthma attacks can be serious.

Tiredness and Adrenal Fatigue Adrenal glands are small organs weighing about 5 grams each that sit on top of the kidneys and secrete hormones that keep us alert, regulate stress and control salt levels. The main hormones from the adrenal glands are adrenaline and cortisol. Adrenaline, also referred to as the 'fight or flight hormone,' primes the body for action, to fight or run for survival. In the early days of human evolution, when humans were part of the diet of some animals, the adrenal glands played a critical role in survival. When the body feels threatened, it sends information to the adrenals to release adrenaline and cortisol, hormones that help the body prepare for stress and danger. These hormones bring about changes in the body in preparation for what's ahead. Cortisol increases blood sugar levels to provide the muscles with more energy. Adrenaline increases heart rate, and the heart pumps more blood to the muscles ensuring that the body responds faster and reacts quicker to danger. Adrenaline is also responsible for keeping the body in an alert state until the danger passes. But these changes come at an enormous cost to the body. And so the body evolved to accommodate stress for very short periods of time. Fleeing from a wild animal can only go on for a short while! When the danger is averted, the body returns to a normal state.

place, and the constant bombardment of stressful news through the media. The result is that many people are continually in a stressful state. The body responds by pumping out stress hormones from the adrenal glands to help it cope. In time, the adrenal gland is completely drained of hormone reserves and starts to shut down, leaving the body unable to deal with any form of stress. The body requires healthy levels of hormones from the adrenal gland to maintain a level of alertness and activity. But when the adrenal glands become dysfunctional and unable to produce any hormones, the result can be extreme exhaustion and inability to tolerate any level of physical or emotional stress. The adrenal gland also produces a hormone that regulates minerals and salt in the body, and a dysfunctional adrenal gland will increase the loss of minerals from the body, which leads to a craving for salty foods, as the body tries to replace the lost minerals. Diseases of the adrenal gland usually follow a history of severe stress, anxiety, and hormonal dysfunction. Reducing stress is a significant step in treating a dysfunctional adrenal gland. In the world today, many people are experiencing unprecedented levels of stress. From the stress at home, the work-

Brain activity 'key in stress link to heart disease' The effect of constant stress on a deep-lying region of the brain explains the increased risk of heart attack, a study in The Lancet suggests. In a study of 300 people, those with higher activity in the amygdala were more likely to develop cardiovascular disease and sooner than others. Stress could be as important a risk factor as smoking and high blood pressure, the US researchers said. Heart experts said at-risk patients should be helped to manage stress. Emotional stress has long been linked with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), which affects the heart and blood vessels - but the way this happens has not been properly understood. This study, led by a team from Harvard Medical School,

points to heightened activity in the amygdala - an area of the brain that processes emotions such as fear and anger - as helping to explain the link. The researchers suggest that the amygdala sends signals to the bone marrow to produce extra white blood cells, which in turn act on the arteries causing them to become inflamed. This can then cause heart attacks, angina and strokes. Stress: How to control and manage it As a result, when stressed, this part of the brain appears to be a good predictor of cardiovascular events. But, they also said more research was needed to confirm this chain of events. Inflammation insight The Lancet research looked at two different studies. The first scanned the brain, bone marrow, spleen and arteries of 293

patients, who were tracked for nearly four years to see if they developed CVD. In this time, 22 patients did, and they were the ones with higher activity in the amygdala. The second very small study, of 13 patients, looked at the relationship between stress levels and inflammation in the body. It found that those who reported the highest levels of stress had the highest levels of amygdala activity and more evidence of inflammation in their blood and arteries. Dr Ahmed Tawakol, lead author and associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, said: "Our results provide a unique insight into how stress may lead to cardiovascular disease. "This raises the possibility that reducing stress could produce benefits that extend beyond an improved sense of psychological wellbeing.

Sangria - The Colour for Innovations

Fashion

Why so GOLD?

The Innovations Design Studio has selected the bold, rich shades of Sangria as their 2017 Color of the Year. Rather than one tone, the fluid colors of Sangria include a spectrum of purples, sweet berry to dark plum, that reflect the Design Studio’s organic creative process. The colour of creativity, spirituality and royalty—purple is a natural progression from Prussian Blue, Innovations’ 2016 Color of the Year; Sangria combines the rich depth of blue with the vibrancy of red for a powerful shock of colour.

While Austin Power’s Goldmember may have given this obsession a more comical twist with his famous “I love gold!” line, we see gold cropping up in all areas of life to represent wealth, power, and success.

Shades of Sangria will lead Innovations’ colour selections in 2017, starting with new wallcoverings like art-inspired Watercolor, woven Barbizon and Type II vinyl Evolution, all of which will be available mid-February.

Founder and Managing Director at Physical Gold, Daniel Fisher explains, “Human’s obsession with gold is perhaps best seen through the media, whether this is through awards or through the films that we watch.”

A design-driven, family-owned company, Innovations in Wallcoverings, Inc., has been creating unique solutions for interiors since 1975. Their Design Studio, based in New York City, collaborates with artisans around the world to develop solutions for the vertical surface—wallcoverings, textiles and faux leathers—all offered with the highest level of personal service. At Innovations, the name speaks for itself.

We see gold featured in many of the famous films that we watch. Whether it’s James Bond, Indiana Jones, or The Italian Job, gold becomes a focal point of many of these films, with people going so far as to want to kill each other for this precious metal! This is alongside the dozens of other films that use the word gold in their title, no doubt to draw in more attention with what can be considered an emotive word.

This is despite the fact that gold isn’t the rarest metal, it’s not the most expensive, and, chemically speaking, it’s fairly uninteresting. So why do we desire gold so much?

Is gold particularly special? Generally, no. Chemically it is a fairly boring element, in that it barely reacts with any other elements. And as we touched on earlier, it’s not the rarest or the most expensive of the metals. So, why gold? Firstly, it is precisely because of gold’s fairly ‘plain’ nature that it has a particularly special quality. It is stable, portable and non-toxic, and you can create a golden object confident in the knowledge that thousands of years later it will still be in pristine condition. But more than this, nothing in this world actually has an intrinsic value; it simply has a value based on what society deems it to be worth. We have given gold its golden nature, and so we consciously or subconsciously place gold at the top of the metal pedestal. If you win first place, you get a gold medal. We see this in small-time school races, and we see this on the world stage when it comes to the Olympics. The best actors and actresses in the world are presented shiny golden Oscars each year to the millions of viewers watching them worldwide. This is despite the fact the statue is actually made up of 93% tin, 5% antinomy and 2% copper! But let’s be realistic, it just wouldn’t be the same if Leonardo DiCaprio was handed a rusty tin statue and a pat on the back, would it? Daniel continues, “As well as associating gold with success, we’ve associated it with money and, therefore, power. When you think of money, you either think of notes or gold coins, and this is reflected again in films with golden bars in bank vaults and golden treasure chests in pirate films. We as a society have made gold synonymous with power, money and success, and this is passed down generation after generation. So it’s no wonder that we desire gold so much!” So, are we just a somewhat shallow society, or is there any science to it? European folklore says that magpies steal shiny objects, and whether this is true or not, it’s safe to say that humans are attracted to shiny, colourful objects. Science states that the more colour something has, the more emotion that we feel towards that object. That’s why silver is more attractive than bronze, but gold is more attractive than silver.

Villena: fortress, history and frontier

This year, Villena has received a special distinction from Acevin as the best Wine Tourism Destination in Spain. Villena is located on the border between the lands bathed by the Mediterranean shore and the austere highland plateaus. Villena is a fortress, as is the Arab castle that crowns its town centre. The Atalaya Castle is the most significant monument in Villena alongside its Treasure. Its great historical

value led to it being classified as a Historical and Artistic Monument and an Asset of Cultural Interest. The Treasure of Villena symbolises the city's rich historical past, as it is one of the most significant findings in gold from the entirety of European prehistory. Villena is an old city laden with a long history. After the Reconquista, its noblemen made this town in Alicante the capital of a large earldom that

would influence the history of the entire nation. Its churches and monuments coexist alongside modern architecture, progress mingles with the traditions and celebrations that have made Villena famous: the Medieval Festivities in March and the Moors and Christians festivities in September. Its cuisine has been acknowledged at the international level. Wine culture is deeply ingrained in this

region and grapes have been grown in these lands since time immemorial. Its long-standing wine culture, the fact that it belongs to the "Alicante Wine Route" and the development of a number of initiatives have led the Spanish Association of Wine-Producing Cities (ACEVIN) to declare Villena to be the best town for wine tourism in Spain. Verily, Villena is full of surprises for curious visitors.

Mercat ecològic d´Elx This weekend, Elche will play host to one of the popular "Eco-markets" which have been touring the area for a few years. Much like a traditional market, the Eco-market offers produce which has been grown in natural, eco-friendly conditions, rather than mass produced, often by local farmers, and free from pesticides and other chemicals. However, it´s not always just fruit and veg that is offered. You will normally find a wide range of other goods for sale too, from clothing to tools and even ornaments, all crafted by hand and all following the same eco-friendly and sustainable concept. The market will be open from 09:00 until 14:00 on Saturday, and will be located at the Plaza de Castilla, which can be found on Calle Adolfo Marsillach in the city of Elche. Whilst in the city, it is also worth making time to explore the surrounding areas too, as one of the most historic towns in the area, it is steeped in history, obvious from some of the buildings you will see as you meander the streets, but what is less obvious are the recent archaeological digs which have revealed a history even deeper than first apparent.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

Perhaps it was that I had just "binge-watched" the first four episodes of the brilliant series, The Crown (much more below), but I was sadly not blown away by the new ITV bio-drama series Tina and Bobby, which started last Friday. The best thing about the show is Michelle Keegan as Tina Moore, wife of soccer star Bobby, but the whole thing felt sadly hollow. The three-parter is based on Tina's biography, but we almost skipped the courting phase of the relationship and why they were right for each other, with Bobby Moore, played by Lorne MacFadyen almost coming over as a bit of a wet drip. ITV set the bar high with their drama Cilla a couple of years ago, which captured the mood and had a fascinating story to tell. Tina and Bobby just felt superficial and showing sixties fashions and banging out some old tunes on a pub jukebox doesn't make for an automatic great watch. I wanted a lot more and felt cheated, and it just looked like a low-budget affair compared to Cilla. There were things that jarred with me like some pretty inept football training ground sequences, but perhaps we will get some more meat in

No Bobby Dazzler

the next two instalments. I just felt very disappointed after really looking forward to Tina and Bobby. Miles better is the Thursday night ITV treat that is Unforgotten with our two wonderfully laid-back detectives Cassie Stuart and Sunny Khan, beautifully played by Nicola Walker and Sanjeev Bhaskar, going back over a quarter of a century for their latest cold case. Series two has not suffered from what I call Broadchurch disease in failing to live up to the expectations of the first outing. It's fun watching the plot evolve with the various strands, and it's good to enjoy two topclass cop shows in the space of 24 hours. The frenetic and hectic No Offence on Channel Four on a Wednesday evening, switching a day later to an almost Heartbeat-style approach with Unforgotten. Both shows are gems and they deserve to be with us for a few years. Staying with ITV drama, I have to say that their Monday night hotel drama The Halcyon is a pleasant, if unoriginal watch. Set in London during 1940, we have the usual "Upstairs Downstairs" elements with a fair bit of glitz mixed in with politics and

romance. The audience figures are not what ITV wanted, but what did they expect when they chose to run it against the millionth series of Silent Witness? People are watching it on "catch-up" services, but I think ITV boobed by not waiting for Sherlock to finish over on BBC 1 on a Sunday, and then running The Halcyon at 9.00 pm, which would have been perfect. I hope ITV stick with it, but I suppose the production company Left Bank Pictures won't lose too much sleep if it is pulled, because they have just fried one of the biggest TV drama fishes ever, in the shape of The Crown.

The Crown walked away with the best drama award at last week's Golden Globes, and Claire Foy (as Queen/Princess Elizabeth) got the best actress gong, with rumours sweeping that The Crown could win every TV category at this month's Screen Actors Awards, as it battles it out with Game Of Thrones and Downton Abbey. What is unique about The Crown (the story of the current monarch) is that it has been commissioned by Netflix, so it is download and watch time, as opposed to conventional TV as we know it, and perhaps a sign of things to come. With a record-

breaking UK TV budget of 100 million pounds for the first series of 10 episodes, there is no way that the BBC or ITV could have funded such a project (six series planned!), and it looks fantastic. There is no expense spared with all the locations, but fortunately we have a cast and script to match. The writer for every episode is Peter Morgan, who penned the Oscar-winning The Queen starring Helen Mirren, and the standard of his script is exceptional. Elizabeth and Philip as played by Claire Foy and Matt Smith (at last shaking off his stint as Doctor Who) are perfect, with a top troupe of supporting turns like Eileen Atkins as Queen Mary and John Lithgow who is fantastic as Winston Churchill. If The Crown ran on a Sunday night in the UK, all the other channels might as well pack up and go home, and it would be the talk of Monday morning around the offices. Each episode is like watching a topclass movie, and yes, you want to move on straight away to the next instalment! The coup for Netflix is that The Crown is getting them talked about, and will encourage subscribers, who would not normally go for such a

service, to try them out. The Crown is a big win for everybody and so take the download plunge. You will not be disappointed. If you are suffering withdrawal symptoms from Planet Earth II, I heartily recommend Spy in the Wild on BBC 1 on Thursday evenings. There's some great wildlife footage, enhanced by using fake robot-controlled animals with tiny cameras in them, to get some unique footage with the likes of monkeys, elephants, and crocodiles. Nothing can beat Planet Earth, but Spy in the Wild is equally enchanting. Not since Hayley Cropper died in Coronation Street a couple of years ago, have we seen anything so moving as the story of Michelle and Steve's dealing with the death of their prematurely born baby. It was harrowing stuff, made even more poignant by knowing that Kym Marsh had the exact same tragedy happen to her, whilst Simon Gregson's wife has gone through 11 miscarriages. You cannot start to imagine what went through their minds as fiction melded with fact in their performances, which any soap will find hard to better this year.

Friday It’s the day of Ronnie and Roxy’s funerals, but emotions are running high and certain residents struggling to keep their true feelings to themselves. Will the Mitchell sisters get the send-off they deserve? Later, Glenda adds to the drama of the day by dropping a bombshell.

Soon afterwards, rather than returning home, Michelle tells Robert she’d like to visit Ruairi in the Chapel of Rest. As they set off, Michelle pours her heart out about her grief for Ruairi and Steve’s apparent lack of understanding. Robert listens sympathetically. As Robert and Michelle arrive at the chapel, will Michelle continue to lean on Robert for support? Or is it Steve that she needs? Wednesday Steve enters the Chapel of Rest to find Michelle asleep on a chair. He gazes emotionally at Ruairi’s tiny body in the coffin. Michelle wakes and is grateful to find Steve there. Promising never to mention the kiss, Robert heads off. Michelle then kisses Ruairi goodbye and tells Steve that she wants the funeral to be a private affair with just the two of them present. Billy conducts Ruairi’s funeral as the two parents come together, united in their grief. Meanwhile, when a delivery man calls at The Rovers with a parcel, Liz is horrified to realise it's the moses basket she ordered for Ruairi. Liz calls on Leanne and offers her the basket, explaining that she doesn't want Michelle or Steve to see it. Later, Leanne allows Liz to feel the baby kick, but how will Nick feel?

Meanwhile, Lee continues to avoid Whitney. Do they stand any chance of working things out? The cracks begin to show for the Mitchells and the Brannings. Meanwhile, a besotted Louise prepares for her date with Travis. Monday The stall holders worry when they hear rumours that the market is being moved. Under pressure to provide an explanation, Carmel admits that the proposal is in the very early planning stages. Martin reacts badly to the news and goes on strike, but the others refuse to follow suit as they don’t want to lose money. Martin’s behaviour leads to an argument with Stacey and he also clashes with Carmel. Later, as the residents carry on with their day, disaster strikes on Albert Square...

Meanwhile, Emerald asks Vincent to speak to Kim about her recent treatment of Denise. When Kim overhears, she throws Emerald out. Emerald isn’t going far, though, as she moves in with Denise instead. Elsewhere, Billy tries to get Jay to open up about his current living arrangements and his love life. Jay isn’t sure that he can move on from what happened with Star, but Billy thinks otherwise. Also today, Sylvie, Tina and Shirley go on a day out together, while Keegan continues to irritate Bex and Louise. Tuesday Albert Square is thrown into chaos following the incident. The residents rally together to help those in need, but they soon realise the situation may be worse than first thought. Meanwhile, Mick is shocked by what he sees. Elsewhere, Stacey receives some alarming news. Thursday The residents continue to deal with the fallout of the incident, causing tensions to run high between loved ones. Meanwhile, one resident makes a huge decision. Elsewhere, Max has spent the last few weeks building bridges with his family and doing his best to settle back into normal life. But is everything as it seems?

Call The Midwife - Sunday BBC One

Endeavour - Sunday ITV

The midwives receive a rapturous welcome when they return from their South African adventure - but all is not well at Nonnatus House. In their absence, Sister Ursula has been running a very tight ship and it is quickly announced that she will remain in charge at Nonnatus House, above Sister Julienne. Sister Ursula makes unpopular changes, but bound by a vow of obedience Sister Julienne is unable to challenge her. As the Nonnatuns chafe under the new rules, the midwives are drawn into helping heavily pregnant mother Trudy Watts, whose husband has just been released from prison for extortion. Gradually, the problems below the surface of the marriage become clear: a victim of domestic abuse Trudy is desperate for a divorce but risks losing her home, her good name and crucially, access to her children. Trapped and with no clear way out, Trudy’s suffering sends shock waves through Nonnatus House, most noticeably affecting Sister Mary Cynthia who is suffering with increasing anxiety following her recent attack.

Marking the 30th anniversary of Morse on ITV, popular detective drama, Endeavour, returned for a highly anticipated fourth series, penned by acclaimed writer Russell Lewis. Reprising his role as the young Endeavour Morse, Shaun Evans stars alongside stage and screen actor Roger Allam as mentor, Detective Inspector Fred Thursday, for a brand new set of complex cases.

Elsewhere, Shelagh is harbouring a secret and struggles to tell Dr Turner, and Patsy receives some distressing news about her father in Hong Kong.

The fourth series began in the summer of 1967, barely a fortnight having passed since the events of the Series 3 finale, and we found Oxford’s finest picking up the pieces of their lives, both personal and professional. Whilst Thursday and wife, Win, struggled to process the departure of both their daughter Joan and son, Sam, who has joined the army, Endeavour waited nervously to hear the result of his Sergeant’s exam, only to find his application “missing”, and a sunsequent fail recorded. Throwing himself into his work to mask the heartache of Joan leaving, Endeavour is quickly consumed by his duties with an array of new, perplexing cases landing on his desk.

Apple Tree Yard - Sunday BBC One Dr. Yvonne Carmichael has a high-flying career, a beautiful home, and a loving family. But appearances can be deceptive, and when she is approached by a charismatic stranger, she soon finds herself taking risks that she had never dreamt of before. Totally unexpectedly, their encounter builds to a passionate and all-consuming affair, and soon the law-abiding Yvonne finds herself in deep and out of her depth. He gives away very little, intriguing, mysterious and elusive. Is there more to his civil service role than he’ll admit? Who is Mark Costley? One evening, on her way to a colleague’s party, she and Costley share a passionate moment in a small backstreet alley, Apple Tree Yard. Arriving at the event, she is glowing, but by the end of the night, joy turns to devastation when a sudden and shocking act of violence changes everything.

This week, in episode 3, Lazaretto, Endeavour is tasked with protecting prisoner and criminal informant Terry Bakewell whilst he’s undergoing treatment in Cowley General Hospital. However, when Chief Superintendent Bright is rushed to hospital with a perforated peptic ulcer, criminal and policeman find themselves neighbours on the ward. As Bright’s condition remains touch and go, Endeavour is drawn into the mystery of the ward, with rumours circulating amongst the patients about the “curse of Bed 10” where an increasing number of patients have unexpectedly died over the past few months. Initially dismissing the “curse” as coincidence, Endeavour interest is piqued when the wife of a former patient of Bed 10 is found dead. With allegations from her of theft made against the ward, Endeavour starts to dig deeper to find out the truth behind the hospital’s mystery curse.

Inside No.9 to return for a fourth series The BBC announced series four of award-winning comedy Inside No.9, the brainchild of Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith. Shane Allen, Controller, Comedy Commissioning, made the announcement at the screening for series three in London this morning. Series three kicked off with a macabre Christmas special on BBC Two, to critical acclaim.

Nigel Farage lined up for new series of Piers Morgan’s Life Stories

Since the first series, Inside No.9 has been showered with praise and has won awards, including the Rose d’Or television comedy award, two major prizes at the Banff World Media Festival, a Royal Television Society Award, the Chortle TV award and the Broadcast Award for Best Original Programme. It was also nominated for a Bafta award for its screenplays, as well as for two British Comedy Awards. Previous series feature stars such as Sheridan Smith, David Warner, Timothy West, Jack Whitehall, Alison Steadman and Gemma Arterton. Series three, which will air in early 2017, also guest stars the likes of Felicity Kendal, Tamzin Outhwaite, Fiona Shaw, Philip Glenister, Morgana Robinson, Jason Watkins, Keeley Hawes, Mat Baynton plus many others, and series four will have a stellar line-up too. As with previous series, each film will be set in a different location, the style and tone changing each week, combining a different mix of horror, thriller, drama and comedy - always aiming to surprise, delight, unnerve and amuse in equal measure. With ambitious production values and screenplays that tell original stories in ways which most sitcom and drama series do not attempt, the fourth series will continue to celebrate the craft of the stand-alone comedy drama. Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith say: "It’s time for the neighbours at No.7 and No.11 to get worried again. We are delighted at the prospect of a fourth series and venturing into six more properties with a ‘9’ on the door. We do hope you will be there to join us, kicking and screaming to be let out.” Shane Allen, Controller, Comedy Commissioning, comments: “Reece and Steve set their own bar ever higher with each series, they are consistently brilliant. Their powers of invention and storytelling are sublime and when you factor in their dazzling performances and tremendous cameo choices, this really is British television at its very best.” Chris Sussman, Head of Comedy, BBC Studios, adds: “This is brilliant news, as I’m one of the biggest fans of Inside No 9 around. There aren’t many series that boast such craft and creativity in every episode, and I can’t wait to see six more stories.” Patrick Holland, Channel Editor, BBC Two, says: “The new series of Inside No.9 sees two of the most creative and challenging comedy talents in the UK at the very top of their game. It is brilliant to have such authorship on BBC Two.” Who knows what will happen once you’re Inside No. 9 - what lies behind each No. 9 door is a mystery.

Piers Morgan will be interviewing one of the most talked about political leaders of his generation, Nigel Farage, for the new series of Piers Morgan’s Life Stories on ITV Also in the 4-part series, Piers will be speaking to music icon and last surviving Bee Gee, Barry Gibb, flamboyant pop star Boy George and legendary actor Nigel Havers. Piers Morgan’s Life Stories returns to ITV for its 14th series early next month, and among the guests will be Nigel Farage, Britain’s most controversial and divisive politician. Piers will be asking Nigel about his numerous brushes with death including the road traffic accident he endured aged 21, his battle with testicular cancer a year later, and surviving a horrific plane crash in 2010. Piers will also grill Nigel about his two marriages, his close friendship with new US President Donald Trump, and how his life has changed since achieving his ultimate goal in the 2016 EU referendum, and stepping down as leader of UKIP. Piers said: “There is no more polarising, talked about or fascinating character in British politics than Nigel Farage, so I am delighted he has agreed to launch the new series. Love him or hate him, he’s never boring and he’s promised to answer any questions I throw at him. I am expecting a very lively, newsmaking encounter, with no prisoners taken on either side. ‘As for the other three guests, Barry Gibb is one of the greatest singer-songwriters this country has ever produced, Boy George is the most colourful and outrageous pop star we’ve ever produced, and Nigel Havers is the most charming actor we’ve ever produced. So they should all be wonderfully entertaining and revealing shows.’ In previous series of Life Stories, Piers has interviewed over 80 famous personalities including Sir Elton John, Sir Rod Stewart, Sir Richard Branson, Sharon Osbourne, Mary Berry, Simon Cowell, Raquel Welch, James Corden, Sir Roger Moore and Gordon Brown when he was Prime Minister.

2017 SET TO BE LANDMARK YEAR FOR ELECTRIC CAR REGISTRATIONS

By mid-2017, government and industry body Go Ultra Low says more than 100,000 plug-in cars will be on UK roads. This landmark prospect is fuelled by record electric car registrations in 2016, a year in which volumes rose 29% on the previous 12 months. From January to December, motorists flocked to buy electric vehicles in record numbers, with 36,907 electric vehicles registered in the UK. As thousands of motorists switched on to the

cost-saving and convenience of electric motoring, public and business appetite for plug-in hybrid and pure electric cars reached a new high. An ever-increasing selection of electric cars is playing a key role in plug-in vehicle uptake, surpassing record levels, Go Ultra Low suggests. Today, more than 35 plug-in models are available to UK motorists – four times the number on the market just five years ago – with yet more new versions set to be launched this year.

Poppy Welch, Head of Go Ultra Low, said: “Year after year, we see record levels of electric vehicle registrations as more and more motorists realise the cost-saving and environmental benefits of driving a plug-in electric car. With ongoing government incentives and increasing product choice we expect this trend to continue, boosting the number of electric cars on UK roads beyond 100,000 by mid-2017.” Plug-in hybrid uptake was particularly strong in 2016 as

annual registrations rose 41.9%, with in-demand models such as the BMW 330e, Volkswagen Golf GTE and Audi A3 Sportback e-tron among the most popular. Every quarter in 2016 produced a year-on-year improvement, while the accumulative registrations total for all electrically powered cars now rests at 87,158. The broad variety of hybrid and pure electric cars on the market is a marked improvement on the eight electric

models available to drivers in 2011 when government introduced the Plug-in Car Grant. The range of products now extends to more than 20 pure electric and 15 hybrid vehicles, from city cars and SUVs to sports cars and family hatchbacks. Go Ultra Low exists to help motorists understand the benefits, cost savings and capabilities of the raft of electric vehicles on the market. The collaborative campaign is the first of its kind, bringing together a consortium of

vehicle manufacturers, government and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Growth elsewhere remained fairly strong, — in particular, in Spain, Austria, Finland, Portugal, and Belgium. PHEV growth was strong nearly across the board, with only the Dutch and Danish markets seeing a drop. The extreme drop in the Netherlands (-73%), a key market, was mostly the result of changed taxation policies.

Last week saw the end of an era with the death at the age of 91 of John Jacobs, who helped found the European Tour and was twice European Ryder Cup captain. Born in Woodsetts, Yorkshire, Jacobs led the Ryder Cup teams in 1979 and 1981, which were the first two competitions to feature a combined European side. His death was announced on the European Tour website. In 1954, Jacobs led the calls for the modernisation of the game, to include an increase and better distribution of prize funds. Jacobs took up the role of tournament director-general of the PGA Executive Committee in October 1971 and would go on to establish a 'Continental Swing' which embraced the French, German and Spanish Opens, with the latter becoming the first official European Tour event at Pals Golf Club in Girona during April 1972. Recalling the developments during an interview which marked the European Tour's 40th anniversary, Jacobs said: 'If you look at where the Tour started

when Ken (Schofield) took over and where it was when he left, it is almost unbelievable, and George (O'Grady) followed that on by moving things even further forward. 'Great credit must go to both of them.' Jacobs was made an OBE in 1997 and in 2000 was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. "John's legacy to golf is well-documented," said Dr Kyle Phillpots, the PGA's executive director. "In addition to his accomplishments as a player, coach and administrator, he is the person who made the European Tour happen and he is widely acknowledged as the father of modern golf coaching." Sandy Jones, the PGA’s chief executive, paid tribute to Jacobs, a man he’d known for a long time. “John Jacobs will be fondly remembered by those of us who were privileged to know him,” Jones told The Scotsman. “Quite simply he was a legend of the game and his name will sit at the top table with all the golf-

ing greats.” “This is extremely sad news for everyone connected with the European Tour and our thoughts and prayers go out to John’s family and his many friends across the world of golf,” said European Tour chief executive Keith Pelley. “His memory for the details around the creation of the Tour were incredible and, quite simply, without his vision and determination, the European Tour we know today wouldn’t exist.” Jacobs also released a number of golf instruction books included "Practical Golf" which is often listed as a seminal text for amateur golfers. “Make it do-able" was Jacobs' coaching mantra. He pushed for the expansion of driving ranges which are now commonplace across Britain, realising that golf could not exclusively be the preserve of the rich. "Golf can be an expensive sport,” he said. “Golf ranges were an inexpensive way to get more people playing the game and enjoying it.”

La Veulta Returns Spain’s big cycling event La Veulta is back in the southern Costa Blanca this year, after a stage start in Torrevieja in 2015, with the event starting on August 19th with a team time trial in the French city of Nîmes. It’s the third time in over 80 years of the race, that La Veulta will start from outside Spain, after Lisbon in 1997 and

Assen in 2009. Stage eight on Saturday August 26th will see the cyclists, who included Tour de France champion Chris Froome last year, head towards the Costa Blanca and a finish at Xorret de Cati after starting at Hellin and travelling through places like Albacete, Alcoy, and Villena. The following day will then

New Faces, Old Problems

Leaders Lesson

VILLAJOYOSA CF 4 CD THADER 1

ORIHUELA CF 2 CD TORREVIEJA 1 CD Torrevieja could not come back from a twogoal deficit at half time in the local derby at Los Arcos on Sunday against a well-drilled Orihuela side who still harbour hopes of getting in the play-offs. Pastor scored for Torry with 11 minutes left on the clock, but even with another four added on, no equaliser was to be had, despite what was Torrevieja’s best period of the match. It finished as a league double for Orihuela over Torrevieja, with the visitors grateful that Muro, a point clear of them (and safety), lost their match over the weekend. Torrevieja brought back three of their four suspended players, Vicente, Calzado and Buba, as well as giving debuts to Diaby, Ilyes and Kana. They all looked decent,

but decent just is not good enough, as the side desperately need points, and they need to start picking them up in an ugly fashion if necessary. The physically robust Antonio led the Orihuela line with his usual dominance and created problems for Torry from the start. He opened the scoring midway through the first half and was unlucky not to double his tally when heading against the crossbar shortly after. Torry were being attacked down both flanks and seemed unable to stem the continuous flow of opportunities created by the home side. It was no surprise when Moreno added a second goal on 38 minutes, seemingly having all the time in the world from just inside the Torry box to pick his spot. Even more worrying is

that the fact that the visitors did not trouble Emilio at all in the home goal during the first half. It was better in the second period of play with that late Pastor strike to offer some hope, but it wasn’t good enough and Torry remain in the relegation places with league leaders Olympic Xativa visiting this Sunday, and odds-on favourites to continue the Torry misery. The match kicks off at 5.00 pm at the Nelson Mandela stadium where local fans will get their first sight of the recent new recruits. They need to gel and put in the performance of their lives, or else it is going to be even tougher between now and mid-May. As the Sherlock clan might say (from Sunday’s great finale on BBC 1), "there's an East wind coming".

Though the final scoreline showed an apparent cruise for the runaway Preferente group four leaders, Thader gave as good as they got and were really competitive until midway in the second half, when the home side got their second goal. Boosted by their win at Jove Espanol the previous weekend, the Rojales-based side knew that they would be in for a still examination of their promotion hopes at Villajoyosa on Sunday, and so it was when a fine shot by

Chisba gave Thader keeper Kevin no chance in the 25th minute. The visitors didn’t let their heads drop and a Miguel header made it all-square 12 minutes later, as the two teams went in at the interval at one-all. Villajoyosa pushed hard for a second goal after the break, and were rewarded when Hucha scored in the 67th minute, but Thader were determined to keep in the game, leaving defensive gaps for Hucha to get anoth-

er 14 minutes later, and then Pika to score the fourth almost at the death, after he came on as a substitute a minute earlier for Hucha. The match though was all over by then after Dani Lucas got sent-off in the 85th minute. Thader go down to sixth in the Preferente table, five points behind third-place La Nucia, and have the perfect chance to bounce back this weekend as they take on relegation candidates Villena CF.

Poor Run Continues

CD ALMORADI 1 CF TORRE LEVANTE 3 It’s turning out to be a long hard winter for Almoradi in trying to avoid relegation from the third division, as they have now notched up an unwanted run of 14 matches without a victory, with exTorrevieja player Rubén Suárez getting onto the scoresheet for the visitors on Sunday. The good news for Almoradi is that with Muro losing in the slot above the relegation zone, they remain six points adrift from safety, and it is Muro’s turn this weekend not to have a fixture. New signings are promised for Almoradi this week and they seem to be urgently needed to give the team a realistic shot of keeping their status come May. Around 200 people braved the cold windy elements, and

they saw, like in their recent outings, Almoradi having to play catch up at half-time, though Saúl should actually have put them in front after he hit the ball high over the bar when he was inside in the penalty box. Torre Levante treated that as almost a wake-up call, and put the squeeze on Almoradi keeper, Adrián, who produced a string of fine saves. There was nothing he could do about the Levante opener in the 18th minute when Rubén Suárez crossed in for Aarón to score, but Saúl then produced a good block from Levante keeper Paredes a few minutes later. The strong wind meant an unpredictable touch to this clash, and it played its part after 32 minutes when a

Rubén Suárez corner went straight into the back of the net, with a mixture of skill and a wind assist! The wind was in Almoradi’s favour in the second half, and Manu quickly pulled one back for the home side to give them hope of getting something out of the match. That hope was extinguished as Olcina got Levante’s third after 63 minutes, and Almoradi recorded another defeat. This weekend, Almoradi go to Elche Ilicitano, who drew one-one with Borriol on Sunday. Orihuela, on the back of their win against Torrevieja go to Silla, whilst Crevillente go to bottom side Segorbe, after their one-nil home victory over Recambios Colon.

Own-Goal Agony

Pointless Journey

SEVILLA 2 REAL MADRID 1

BARCELONA 5 LAS PALMAS 0

OVIEDO 2 ELCHE 1

Zinedine Zidane urged Real Madrid to put the disappointment of a first defeat in 40 games behind them as Sevilla produced a late turnaround to breathe new life into the La Liga title race with a 2-1 win on Sunday. Zidane's men looked set to extend their commanding lead at the top of the table when Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring at the Sanchez Pizjuan from the penalty spot midway through the second-half. However, Sergio Ramos delighted the home fans by heading into his own net on his return to his former club, and substitute Stevan Jovetic curled home a dramatic stoppage-time winner on his La Liga debut as Sevilla closed to within a point of Real. Ramos received an especially hostile reception on his return to Seville having goaded the Sevilla fans when scoring a late penalty in their three-all draw in the Copa del Rey on the same ground last week. But Zidane rejected any suggestion the defender's concentration had been affected. "He played great. I am very happy with how he did, he played with personality," Zidane told BeIN Sports. "I have to be very proud of them all for what we have done until now. We know this was going to happen some day, it is today, and now we have to continue working hard in all competitions.” Ramos was part of an unusual Madrid line-up with three at the back, but Zidane's tactical change had worked well for 85 minutes. Wing-backs Dani Carvajal and Marcelo were given extra licence to roam forward, and it was Carvajal who was chopped down in the area for Ronaldo's opener. "We did very well with the wing-backs. Dani and Marcelo offered a lot offensively," said Zidane. "It is a shame. To play like that for 85 minutes and then to lose is hard to take, but that's football." Real Madrid are a point clear of Sevilla at the top of the table, and entertain Malaga tomorrow afternoon (Saturday).

Barcelona closed the gap to just two points behind leaders Real Madrid after thrashing Las Palmas at the Nou Camp on Saturday, with Real losing the following day at Sevilla. Luis Suarez scored twice - his 101st and 102nd goal for the club - in between a tap in from Lionel Messi before Arda Turan and Aleix Vidal completed the rout. The Uruguayan swept the Catalans into an early but controversial lead with a first-time right-footed effort in the 14th minute after he was found unmarked by Andre Gomes' pass from the byline. Las Palmas could feel aggrieved at going behind to the strike after the supplier Gomes appeared to have strayed offside when he was played in by Vidal from defence. Quique Setien looked to former Portsmouth and AC Milan striker Kevin-Prince Boateng for their attacking impetus, but he spurned two good chances to claw the visitors back into the game. The victory meant that Luis Enrique's team are now within two points of arch rivals Real Madrid, and Barcelona now travel to Eibar this Sunday evening.

Another defeat for the Ilicitanos is seeing them look more towards the lower end of the Segunda division as opposed to the top. That was despite pulling a goal back in the 75th minute from veteran striker Nino, as they came away with nothing from their long trip to Oviedo last weekend. The match was short of goalmouth excitement with Hervías having the best of the first-half opportunties for Elche with a longrange strike, whilst at the other end, Armando led the Elche defence bravely to see them go nil-nil at half-time. Oviedo looked dangerous before the interval, and the break didn’t disrupt their rhythmn as Toché put them ahead early in the second half, with a Susaeta strike doubling the Oviedo advantage on the hour mark with a shot that Juan Carlos could do nothing about. Elche coach Toril rung the changes bringing on Josete and Guillermo in a double-substitution two minutes later, and the visitors started to look more dangerous as they tried to get back into the match. An Álex Fernández cross set up Nino for his goal, and much as the Ilicitanos bravely tried for the equaliser, it didn’t come, and Elche had nothing to show from a clash that they deserved to get a point from. The Ilicitanos lie 14th in the table with 26 points, and are away again this Saturday afternoon, as they travel to 16th-placed Rayo in a 5.00 pm kick-off.

REAL MADRID 1 CELTA VIGO 2 Real Madrid lost back-to-back games for the first time since November 2015 as Celta Vigo edged the first leg of their Copa del Rey quarter-final. Madrid, whose 40-game unbeaten run was ended by Sevilla on Sunday, fell behind on Wednesday night when exLiverpool forward Iago Aspas drilled in his 16th goal of the season. The home side levelled at the Bernabeu when Marcelo buried a thunderous left-foot volley from the edge of the area. But Jonny regained Celta's lead seconds later after a quick counter attack. Madrid still had time for France striker Karim Benzema to blaze a bouncing ball over the crossbar from close range with eight minutes left. It means the visitors, who are eighth in La Liga, take a slender lead back to Galicia for next Wednesday's return leg. Zinedine Zidane's side only lost twice in their previous 48 matches across all competitions.

A crowd of over 300 turned up to see this top-of-the-table regional group-16 clash between third-placed Montesinos and second in the table Benijofar who were a point clear of Monte. It’s fair to say that the clash was a classic and had just about everything other than a victory for either side. Benijofar were the better side for most of the first half and took the lead early on with an 18th-minute penalty from Miguel until, towards the end of the first half, Montesinos appeared to step up a gear and scored a penalty of their own as Alfredo coolly stroked the ball home in the 35th minute, before Macan put the home side in front just before the break. The start of the second half was just as spectacular, with Benijofar scoring three times in the space of ten minutes through Jose Luis, Pitu and Berni to go four-two up on the hour mark, and things certainly looked bleak for Monte. However, the home side refused to be beaten, and pulled a goal back in the 67th minute when Carlos Ventura netted, and when minutes later the visitors had a man sent off, top scorer Auren, who had been having a quiet game by his standards, made it all-square with a quarter of an hour remaining. Montesinos then threw everything at the opponents, but unbelievably Auren missed chance after chance when it appeared impossible to miss, meaning the match finished as a four-all draw, leaving the sides as they were in the table before the game. CD Montesinos will no doubt be cursing their missed chances and that regular scorer and crowd favourite, Vazquinho, was unavailable due to work commitments. Monte have a blank weekend, and so they are back in play at the end of the month, when they go to league leaders, CD Murada. Meanwhile, all eyes will be on Benijofar’s home match against Murada this weekend.

Sporting Gijon have parted company with Abelardo Fernandez as their coach. The announcement was made on Tuesday, two days after a 3-2 home loss to Eibar, with Sporting in the La Liga relegation zone. No replacement was announced. The club said the decision was made in "mutual agreement" after "analysing the current sports situation and the results obtained." Sporting has lost seven of its last eight games and is 18th in the 20-team standings with 12 points, four points from safety. Their next game is at Real Betis on Sunday.

Rafinha Out

Rafinha is set for a spell on the sidelines after Barcelona confirmed he has suffered a hamstring injury. The midfielder has been a key part of the Barca squad this season, scoring six goals in 18 appearances despite missing the start of the campaign as he helped Brazil to Olympic gold on home soil in Rio.

The 24-year-old Deportivo de la Coruna forward, Borja Valle, has joined Elche, according to the club president Diego Garcia. He was scheduled to join his new colleagues in training yesterday. The green light for the move came after Deportivo signed two players this weekend.

Coming Back?

Lionel Messi has reiterated that he will stay at Barcelona for as long as the club wants him. The Spanish champions recently agreed extensions with Luis Suarez and Neymar, but are yet to reach a deal with Messi, whose contract runs until 2018. Barca's CEO Oscar Grau has suggested spending caps imposed by La Liga could affect what they are able to offer Messi. But the 29-year-old told Coach Magazine: "I have always said that Barcelona has given me everything and I am here for as long as they want me to be." Messi also gave his backing to former Barcelona head coach Pep Guardiola, who has struggled to match expectations in his first season in the Premier League. Guardiola's Manchester City are fifth in the table, 10 points behind leaders Chelsea, and were beaten 4-0 by Everton at the weekend. "It is a very competitive league, last season showed that, so it makes it very difficult to predict," said Messi. "Of course Pep is a very successful coach, he will be adjusting to the league, but I am sure that he will be successful." While both Guardiola and Messi enjoyed plenty of success with Barcelona, the latter is yet to win a trophy with Argentina.

La Liga side Alaves have made an approach to Leicester City for striker Leonardo Ulloa, who, according to a report from Sky Sports, is unhappy at only having started once in the Premier League this season. The former Almeria forward has 18 months left on his contract and joined Leicester from Brighton in 2014.

Antoine Moving

He even retired from international football after the Copa America final defeat to Chile last summer, only to then reverse his decision. "After the disappointment of losing the final I had time to think and to speak with people, and I felt it was the right option to reverse my decision," he says. "I still have big ambitions to win a trophy with Argentina."

Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Antoine Griezmann, should he become available in the summer. However, the Atletico Madrid striker is not seen as a potential deal for United during this current transfer window. The Independent newspaper reported on Wednesday that United had verbally agreed a weekly wage and even a shirt number with the Atletico star. The player is reportedly excited at the prospect of playing alongside French compatriot Paul Pogba at United. Other reports though suggest that Chelsea want to sign Griezmann and are prepared to offer money and a player exchange.

Manchester United have deposed Real Madrid as the world's richest soccer club after revenue grew to a record 515 million pounds in 2015-16, according to Deloitte's annual Money League published yesterday. The 20-times English champions knocked Real off the perch they had occupied for 11 years with a return to the Champions League and increased commercial revenue key to their rise. Real dropped to third behind Barcelona with Bayern Munich fourth and Manchester City into the top five for the first time after a run to the Champions League semi-finals.

ADDED YEARS

English Rugby’s governing body, the Rugby Football Union (RFU) is backing plans for a five-year residency rule with World Rugby looking to increase the existing eligibility level for international selection by two years. RFU chief executive Ian Ritchie says it is "absolutely the route to go down". The sport's global governing body, World Rugby, will vote on whether to change the rule at its council meeting in May.

HARRY LOOKS TO KANE CITY

BOTTAS BACKED

The Premier League big boys take on teams haunted by the spectre of relegation this weekend, plus there’s the tasty Saturday evening clash of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, still smarting from their Everton drubbing, entertaining second-in-the-table Tottenham (6.30 pm kick-off). The last thing City need is an in-form strike force led by Harry Kane to run rings round them. Guardiola is under pressure after his side’s carnage at Goodison Park last weekend, and City will have their task cut out against high-flying Spurs, who have won six on the bounce. Mauricio Pochettino’s young side are keeping things tight at the back while scoring freely at the other end. Harry Kane, Dele Alli, and Christian Eriksen have scored a combined 15 goals in the last six games. On the other hand, the game is a must-win for City, who are out of the title race now. Whether it's Guardiola's tactics, a lack of decent signings, or players not perfoming to their potential, the poor results were not in the script when the ex-Barca and Bayern boss was brought in last summer.

Lewis Hamilton has backed Mercedes replacing Nico Rosberg with Valtteri Bottas, says team boss Toto Wolff. Mercedes signed the Finn this week after buying him out of his Williams contract to replace Rosberg, who retired after winning last year's world title. Wolff said: "Lewis said he thought Valtteri was a nice guy, and he’s one of the people that he actually gets on well with in the sport”.

They must not drop points at home against Spurs if they harbour ambitions of finishing in the top four places. City will be without the services of İlkay Gündoğan (injury) and Fernandinho (suspension), but 19-year-old Brazilian winger Gabriel Jesus is set to make his first Premier League appearance after the FA approved his registration documents. For Spurs, Jan Vertonghen is out with ankle ligament damage, and Érik Lamela is a long-term absentee. Key stat: Spurs have conceded 14 goals this season, and only five of those have been from open play. This Saturday lunchtime (1.30 pm kick-off) , third-placed Liverpool could climb above Spurs for a few hours if, as expected, they put Paul Clement’s Swansea to the sword at Anfield. The Reds have scored the most goals in the league this season, while the Swans at the bottom of the table have conceded the most, a statistic that suggests there will be only one result. Klopp’s Reds, will of course, be relieved to have finally disposed of Plymouth in their FA Cup replay (having rested some of the squad), and now they will be going for their first Premier League win of 2017. Philippe Coutinho could make his first league start after his ankle injury following cameos against Southampton and United lately. On Sunday afternoon, leaders Chelsea take on third-from-bottom Hull City. Chelsea made light work of the Diego Costa issue last weekend with a thumping 3-0 win over champions Leicester. Hull also seem to have got their act together as new boss Marco Silva announced his arrival in the Premier League by guiding them to their first league win since November, as they fought back against Bournemouth. Antonio Conte’s side sit seven points clear of their nearest challengers at the top, and there is no reason to believe the Blues will drop points at Stamford Bridge against one of the league’s strugglers.
