BRIT KNIFES WIFE

BY ALEX TRELINSKI

T

he Guardia Civil arrested an 86-year-old British man, Ronald Stenning, on suspicion of killing his wife at a retirement home in El Campello, north-east of Alicante City. The incident happened at around 9.00 am on Sunday, with his 79year-old wife Margaret having her throat slashed, whilst Mr.Stenning then allegedly tried to harm himself with the same knife. He was taken to San Juan University Hospital in Alicante with what were initially described as superficial injuries, but he then needed emergency surgery. He was said to be "out of danger and conscious" on Monday morning, but as The Courier went to press, still not well

enough later in the week to be questioned by a judge. He was scheduled to be seen by a psychiatrist. The drama unfolded at the Orbea Buenavista residential home in the Muchavista beach area of El Campello. A worker at the facility said that the Stennings had not lived there long, with some reports suggesting that they had originally come to Spain from the Brixham area of Devon. Staff at the home said the couple had never previously been involved in any violent incidents and the woman had never reported her husband for abuse. A minute's silence in memory of Margaret Stenning took place on

Monday lunchtime outside the regional government building in Valencia City. Valencian vice-president

Monica Oltra described it as a "new example of male violence which had ended Margaret's life".

A man died and four people, including a young child, were seriously injured in a Tuesday night collision between a Volkswagen Golf car and a lorry on what is a stretch of straight road. The crash happened at around 7.30 pm on the route linking Orihuela City to the A-7 close to the exit for La Matanza. The driver of the Golf, who was from the Murcia region

village of Patino, died instantly, whilst his wife and two-year-old son were injured and taken to the Vega Baja Hospital, along with the two people in the lorry. Fire crews from Orihuela, Almoradi and Crevillent were involved in freeing the man’s wife and child from their car, with the road closed for a number of hours.

A British-owned bar on the Orihuela Costa was raided by Valencian regional police as part of a major push against illegal gambling in Alicante Province. Officers also visited premises in Catral and Elda as part of their swoops, with two and a half thousand euro seized, as well as an electronic bingo kit; a box full of betting slips; a computer laptop; and gaming tables. Illegal betting on UK

sports events was going on at the unnamed Orihuela Costa bar, which was full of British clients taking an unauthorised punt on football matches as well as horse and greyhound racing. In Catral, a bar popular with British residents was raided with bingo equipment seized, whilst seven men involved in a poker game at an Elda address had their entertainment suddenly stopped by the Valencian agents.

Elche council says that they are willing to sacrifice a "Blue Flag" award at one of their local beaches if residents want to see a dog beach set up. Tourism councillor Mireia Mollà has said the authority are keeping all options open as to where such a facility would be set up along the nine kilometres of coast in the municipality. A previous plan for a dog beach at El Pinet in La Marina was dropped amidst controversy that the resi-

dents were not even consulted. Mollà says that she has an open mind on the location, but that residents have to be fully involved. She also plans to go with council officials to check out the dog beach that neighbouring Alicante council have set up at El Campello. No time scale has been in put in place, with Mollà stating that getting things right was important, as opposed to getting something open in time for this summer.

11 Orihuela Costa beaches have been given a maximum clean water quality rating based on independent regional government research last summer. Beaches and coastal councillor Luisa Boné said it was excellent news for bathers, as well as a boost for Orihuela council trying to maintain the coveted Blue flag status for the beaches. Sampling was carried out on a regular basis at Punta Prima, Cala Mosca, Cala Estaca, Cala Bosque, Cala Cerrada, Cala Capitán, La Caleta, Calas de Aguamarina, La Glea, Barranco Rubio and Mil Palmeras

Savaged To Death

An Alicante Province man was mauled to death in what was a vicious attack by his neighbour's five dogs (pictured in a shelter), who have now been put to sleep on the orders of a court. The 66-year-old was discovered by his son lying on the ground covered in wounds caused by bites from the dogs, all crosses between pit bulls and bull terriers. The victim left his home in Beniarbeig in the Marina

but police realised that one of them was soaking wet, as if it had just been washed," the Guardia Civil said. "The owner alleged he had fallen in the pool." DNA samples were taken from the dogs which confirmed they killed the man and they owner is now set face charges of involuntary manslaughter. The dogs were taken to a shelter at Els Poblets where they bit two workers and destroyed the cage they were kept in.

When his son realised he had been gone a long time, he went to look for him and found him lying on the ground in a "horrific scene", according to the Guardia Civil. There are no dangerous wild animals in the area, and suspicion soon fell on a neighbour whose dogs have caused problems in the past. "The dogs didn't have any trace of blood on them,

Torrevieja's coalition council seems almost certain to get the 2017 budget passed, just days after the two Ciudadanos councillors, Pilar Gómez Magán and Paqui Parra changed their minds on voting it down. The current government team would now get 14 votes, as opposed to the Partido Popular opposition only able to muster 11 votes. Last week, Gómez Magán did not go into specifics as to why her party had pulled out of talks with the government team over supporting the

budget, but she said that there was a "lack of confidence" in the governing coalition. She made a surprise appearance with Torrevieja mayor, José Manuel Dolon on Tuesday to sign a declaration of support, with the sole condition of the deal apparently being that the coalition council support 50 percent of proposals from Ciudadanos. The two Sueña Torrevieja councillors, who quit the coalition in the autumn, had already declared that they would support the budget.

lorry was all apparently caused by a massive daylong spending spree on alcohol and drugs. The incident happened on Tuesday morning, with officers opening fire as the man was driving the lorry against the flow of traffic along the Roda del Litoral towards the heart of the city. The vehicle, carrying

dozens of butano canisters, rammed several cars before it was finally stopped on one of the road's exits. Authorities said there was no terrorist motivation behind the lorry hijack, and that the “driver” had allegedly spent 20 thousand euro in the previous 24 hours on alcohol, drugs, and prostitutes.

A series of major works around San Pedro del Pinatar were formally unveiled this week by the San Pedro mayor, Visitación Martínez (pictured right), and Murcia’s regional environment minister, Adela Martínez Cachá. The projects include a new network of floodwater collectors in the municipality as well as regeneration work at Villananitos beach.

A five-strong Bulgarian family who enticed fellow Bulgarians to come over to Spain for a new life, and then forced them to beg on the streets, has been arrested by the National Police. Two children and an adult were freed by the authorities, who discovered that they were coerced into asking for money in Orihuela, and were kept as a virtual prisoners in a house in the local area. Any money they got from

begging had to be handed over to their Bulgarian masters, and their documents like passports were taken away from them. Any thought of trying to leave was countered with violence. The gang, three men and two women aged between 40 and 55, would get people and their families to come over via bus from Bulgaria, and they would be picked up in Murcia, and then transferred to their Orihuela base.

The owner and operator of San Javier airport, AENA has set up a feedback machine at the facility as it rolls out the hi-tech way of getting the views of passengers across the whole of its network in Spain, including AlicanteElche airport. The machines feature four round buttons in red, pink, light green and dark green, with faces on them. These range from wide smiles to downturned mouths, through half-smiles and 'flat' mouths, and passengers who choose to do so press the one they think most reflects how they feel about the services in question. Smiley or non-smiley faces are used so as to avoid language barrier problems with international travellers. AENA will then be able to see how the majority rate their experiences and act accordingly.

Low cost carrier Ryanair has announced the launch of a new winter 2017 service from Leeds-Bradford airport to San Javier, which will run twice-weekly. Tony Hallwood, Aviation Development Director at Leeds Bradford Airport, said: "The new San Javier service will provide easy access to the Costa Calida being conveniently close to La Manga, Cartegena and to Torrevieja, which is favoured by overseas property owners"

Crime City

Torrevieja had the highest number of domestic burglaries with violence in Alicante Province according to crime figures for 2016 released by the Interior Ministry. 978 robberies were logged last year, compared to 972 in 2015. In comparison, the Orihuela municipality recorded 453 robberies in 2016. Most crime indicators were up for Torrevieja last year, with the number of crimes up by 500 to 7,617, with thefts and drug-trafficking also on the rise. No reason behind the increases were given in the Madrid government statistics.

Cleaner Containers

The cleaning of rubbish containers across the Orihuela Costa has been significantly improved with a major programme, claims Orihuela council. Road cleaning councillor Dámaso Aparicio said this week that the “service had been considerably improved after demands from local

residents over the years”. Three extra staff members have been brought in, according to Aparicio, which has seen 683 containers cleaned since the start of the year, including night working. With work ongoing, the project is expected to be completed by the start of next week.

Angry Mayor Rafal's mayor Manuel Pineda is looking at legal action after an opposition politician accused him of changing plans for the town's CV-912 by-pass, so that the route would not go by his house. Pineda, of the socialist PSOE party says that lawyers are looking into the accusations made by María Dolores Navarro of the Partido Popular, adding that "insult" and slander charges may be brought against her.

Hopeful View

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy says he thinks a deal can quickly be worked out with Britain to defend the rights of British expats in Spain after Brexit. "I am absolutely convinced that we will reach an agreement so that these people will not be affected by political decisions," Rajoy said in an interview with the AFP

news agency last week. "I hope that we will soon be able to tell them: Don't worry, nothing is going to change for the Spaniards in the United Kingdom, nor for the Britons in Spain," he said. He said the negotiations would start after an EU summit that will convene once Britain formally begins its EU divorce pro-

ceedings, expected for the end of March. He also noted the importance of British tourism to Spain and the economy, which attracts more visitors from Britain than any other country. "Last year 17 million Britons came to Spain, and we want that to continue," he said. "They like it, and so do we."

Training Day

Guardia Civil union chiefs are up in arms again over the state of the Guardia barracks in Torrevieja. Last summer the AUGC complained about regular power cuts making working conditions intolerable, with air conditioning units tripping the electricity supply. Now the AUGC say that essential items are not available at the reception desk with the state of area being called “deplorable” and not appropriate for visitors. Staff are said to have limited work materials for writing down reports, whilst the printer is

always out of ink, and the chairs they have to sit on are uncomfortable, according to the AUGC. They claim that

the building’s lavatory is often out of toilet paper, but at least the soft drinks machine does work.

Scientists say that the effects of olive oil on cholesterol levels and circulatory health in the socalled 'Mediterranean diet' may be even more beneficial than first thought. Researchers at Barcelona's Hospital del Mar Institute of Medical Investigations found that a diet rich in extra-virgin olive oil improves the work of highdensity lipoproteins (HDLs, known as 'good cholesterol'). The job of HDLs is to extract 'bad' cholesterol from the arteries and transport it to the liver, which eliminates it from the body.

Orihuela police checks on drugged-drivers yielded 17 people driving at two check points on the coast and in Orihuela city on a training day for officers. The points had been introduced to help the local police through the training process of detecting motorists who are driving when they shouldn’t be, and they produced a high number of offenders. Such has been the level of drug-driving, that the Orihuela police are planning to make such random stop and checks more permanent. The stops were also used to make sure that drivers had all their appropriate insurance and ITV information, and they had the bonus of yielding a Kosovan man wanted on an international arrest warrant.

A 300 thousand euro tender to demolish a controversial Torrevieja building, nicknamed La Ballena (The Whale), has been advertised by Torrevieja council. Bidders are likely to offer to

do the work on pulling down the structure on Calle Pedro Lorca for around 100 thousand euro less. The building has been empty for over a decade and has been the subject of

numerous complaints from local residents over the years. Security netting was erected around the block towards the end of last year for protection.

Cristina Aquitted Princess Cristina, the 51-year-old sister of King Felipe and sixth in line to the Spanish throne, was cleared last Friday in her tax fraud trial. However her husband, Inaki Urdangarin, was given a six year and three month jail term by the court in Palma, Mallorca. Urdangarin was accused of using his royal connections to generate business income used for private spending. The case began in 2010 and became symbolic of perceived corruption among Spain's elites, including the royals. Princess Cristina, who

Kiosk Row

A kiosk that has operated on Rafal’s Plaza de Espana for half a century, has been pulled down on the order of the council. The town’s socialist mayor Manuel Pineda said that the structure had been operating without the proper licenses, though the kiosk had not been open for over a year. The twist to the story is that is owned by the mother of the leading opposition Partido Popular councillor Albert Pastor and that a “political” decision had been taken to remove it. An on-line petition has been launched to see the kiosk restored, but Rafal councillor Noemí Cutillas said that nobody has been harmed as it had been closed for some time, and that the law had to be applied.

N-332 Crash A 54-year-old man had to be freed by Elche firefighters after a three-vehicle accident on the N-332 in the La Marina area on Monday lunchtime. Bagged Up

All Spanish shops will be legally obliged to charge a minimum of five cents for plastic carrier bags. Environment minister, Isabel García Tejerina, says free plastic bags will be banned from January 1st next year in an attempt to cut their use, in line with the European Directive of 2015

which all member States are obliged to apply progressively. Bags of less than 50 micrograms in density, or the lightweight, easily-breakable supermarket kind, cause the greatest levels of pollution, including the water supply, although all sizes of carrier bag will attract a cost.

Strange Visions

A brain tumor caused a 60-year-old Murcia region woman to believe she was speaking with the Virgin Mary. A report from Murcia's Morales Meseguer hospital said she became "obsessed with religion" during a two month period before being diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer. She began to have regular visions of the Virgin Mary reporting that she was “seeing, feeling, and conversing with the Virgin Mary with some of the episodes lasting for days. Her friends and family thought she might be suffering from depression because she had been caring for a terminally ill relative

at the time, and urged her to seek medical advice. Doctors performed an MRI, and discovered several lesions in her brain, which a biopsy revealed was glioblastoma multiforme, a particularly aggressive form of brain cancer. The tumors were too large to treat with surgery, so the woman received chemotherapy and radiation for the cancer. Her doctors also prescribed antipsychotic drugs for her, and during a five-week treatment, her religious fervour and the visions gradually disappeared. She sadly though died within eight months of the tumor being detected.

Beach Boost

Wi-Fi is set to spread to all beaches in La Manga as part of an 18 million euro regeneration plan for the area paid for by the European Union. San Javier mayor José Miguel Luengo met on Monday with Francisco Abri, director general of the “Simplification of Business for the Digital Economy” organisation, who said that

the project would be pioneering for Spain, with not just Wi-Fi on beaches, but also special umbrellas provided where mobile phones can be recharged, and the creation of special apps full of relevant information to tourists and local residents. A number of beaches will see the scheme piloted before an extensive roll-out across the area.

Refugees Welcomed

At least 160 thousand people holding placards and banners, marched through the streets of Barcelona on Saturday demanding that Spain take in more refugees seeking asylum. Failing in its pledge to resettle 17 thousand refugees from the warravaged areas of the Middle East within two years, Spain has accepted just over a thousand people since 2015. Police estimated the demonstrators to be around

160, though organisers claimed it was nearly double that number. Organizer Ruben Wagensberg said what was clear after the protest was that the Catalunya region of Spain is prepared to welcome refugees fleeing violence in the Middle East and Africa. "There is an ample consensus in Catalunya to demand that the Madrid government's commitments are upheld, he said.

Rubbish Tender

San Fulgencio council has been ordered by Madrid officials to suspend the tender for the municipality’s rubbish disposal and street cleaning contract, after two applicants complained about the specifications of the contract being put through the tender process. Now the council, under the Partido Popular mayor, Carlos Ramiréz (pictured), has opted to restart the whole tender process, with the authority claiming that

the document had been drafted by somebody who “no longer works there”. The socialist PSOE opposition councillor, Alejandro Sampere, slammed the “ridiculous” requirements of the original tender. Waste disposal services in San Fulgencio have not been contracted since 2012, with nearly four million euro spent over the last six years on extending an old deal with franchise holder Ginssa.

It’s that time of the year that processionary caterpillars start to make their annual appearance and they are a real danger to dogs. These caterpillars represent a public health hazard because they have thousands of hairs which contain an irritating protein called thaumetopoein. These hairs can be blown by the wind into contact with people and animals, resulting in painful skin irritations and rashes and, in some cases, allergic reactions in some people and animals. They are native to, and until recently were only found in the Mediterranean region, North Africa, and some areas of the Middle East and southern Europe. In Spain especially, they are a huge problem. They feed off the needles of pine trees and it is very easy to spot their nests. Looking at a pine tree, if you see a white ball, which resembles cotton wool or candy floss, that is them. More commonly referred to as the pine processionary caterpillar as its name implies, they are a kind of caterpillar that lives on the tree tops of pine trees. The word processionary comes from the fact that they line-up forming long caterpillar lines that can reach several meters long, although generally they only measure around a centimeter in length. If you come across them, do not touch them! Warn your children that they are not like the friendly English caterpillars. The very fine hairs on these creatures are poisonous and most dangerous. They are most noticeable from January to mid-April and are at their most dangerous in mid/late February. The caterpillars are often seen in the evenings, walking in procession from tree to tree. If they drop onto you or your pet, don't brush them off with

your hands because the effect is most unpleasant, causing great irritation, rash and pain. Dogs, cats and people can suffer from shock. The hairs of the caterpillars are still very harmful even when the creatures are dead. Do not hit them with sticks because hairs flying in the air are just as dangerous. Burn them, but be careful of floating hairs. If the caterpillars are in the tree cocoon state, first spray the nest with hair spray (to seal down the hairs), cover the cocoon and the affected part of the branch with a plastic bag, cut down the branch, place it on clear ground and burn it. The larvae secrete an acidic poison, which causes severe infections in the dog's mouth or tongue upon contact. If you suspect that your pet has come in contact with them, immediately consult your nearest vet. It is easy to detect the problem early, as a poisoned dog has extremely powerful salivation. The poison quickly leads to a severe allergic reaction. This can lead to lowered blood pressure, which, in turn, can lead to shock and even death. Another sign is that dogs' tongues usually experience heavy swelling. Dogs that survive the first stage usually develop an infection on the tongue and/or throat. After some time gangrene can occur, causing parts on the tongue to fall off. As first aid, it is advisable to flush the dog's mouth with plenty of water, before going to the vet. Roof Fall

A 44-year old worker suffered serious injuries in Almoradi on Tuesday when he fell to the ground from a roof that he was working on.

The five metre fall happened at around 9.00 am on Calle Perpetuo Socorro when part of the roof collapsed, sending the victim to the ground.

After initial on-site treatment, the labourer was taken by an emergency ambulance to the Vega Baja Hospital in Orihuela.

Road Repairs

Eleven roads in the Murcia region, which were damaged by December and January’s storms are to have one and a half million

euro spent on them in emergency work commissioned by the regional government. The main RM-F51 road in the Torre Pacheco area is on

the repair list, but more minor routes, with nearly 60 roads hit, have not been included in the first phase of work.

New Trees

Thirteen dead palm trees have been replaced on a stretch of the Orihuela Costa between La Zenia and Cala

Capitán, according to coastal councillor Luisa Boné. Other work has been or

will be done to improve the appearance of the walkway as well as repairs to the irrigation system in the area.

Use Lemon Rinds to Make Adorable Soaps Instead of tossing lemon rinds, use for making supercute lemon soaps. Usually tossed in the trash, lemon zest brightens basic glycerin soap for an invigorating cleaner that also leaves hands nice and soft. After grating, use the rest of the lemon for whatever you have planned.

What You'll Need: 8 ounces unscented glycerin soap 1 lemon Microplane or grater Small heat-safe bowl Small saucepan Lemon essential oil (optional) Silicone mold

Directions: Place a small saucepan filled one-third full with water over medium heat. Place the unscented glycerin soap in a small heat-safe bowl, and place over the saucepan, creating a homemade double boiler. You can find unscented glycerin soap at your local grocery or craft store for about a dollar per bar. Gently heat until the soap begins to melt. Once the soap starts to melt, carefully zest the lemon rind into the small bowl. If you don't have a microplane, carefully cut away the rind from the lemon, finely chop,

and add to the bowl. Continue heating until the soap has completely melted. Carefully remove the soap mixture from the heat. You can add 10 to 20 drops of lemon essential oil to really elevate the lemon scent. Slowly pour the soap into a silicone mold, and let set until the soap has completely cooled. Pop out the soaps and enjoy using after dinner prep or to freshen hands after working in the garden. Or package a few together and give them to someone special!

Classic crumpets “These require a little patience, but you just cannot beat a homemade crumpet. Making your own butter is optional, but it’s surprisingly simple and satisfying to do. ” Ingredients 400 ml milk 1 tablespoon dried yeast 1 teaspoon caster sugar 300 g strong white flour ½ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda vegetable oil , for greasing HOMEMADE BUTTER 350 ml double cream Method Gently warm the milk. In a bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in the warm milk and 100ml of tepid water. Leave in a warm place for 15 minutes, or until frothy. Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda and 1 teaspoon of fine sea salt into a large bowl. Make a well in the centre and pour in the

yeast mixture. Whisk from the centre outwards until the consistency of double cream – this will take a few minutes. Add a splash more water, if needed. Cover with a damp tea towel and set aside for 45 minutes or until little bubbles form on the surface. For the butter, pour the cream into a freestanding mixer. Whisk on high for 5 to 10 minutes, or until the cream splits into solids and liquid. Drain through a sieve, discard the liquid, then rinse the solids thoroughly with cold water. Place in muslin and squeeze out any excess liquid. Mix ½ a teaspoon of sea salt through and wrap in greaseproof paper. Grease four 10cm egg

rings with vegetable oil. Wipe a little oil around a large frying pan or iron skillet and place over a medium-high heat. Arrange the rings in the frying pan and, once hot, spoon 4 tablespoons of the batter into each ring. Cook for 5 minutes, or until little bubbles appear on the surface. Once the bubbles have burst, leaving little holes, use tongs to carefully lift off the rings and flip over the crumpets, then cook for 1 minute on the other side. Re-grease and reheat the rings and pan before cooking the next batch. Serve the crumpets warm, with a slather of butter. If making them in advance, just toast lightly on both sides when you come to serve them.

Slow Cooker Veggie Tortilla Soup Ingredients 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 medium onion, diced 2 medium cloves garlic, minced 1/2 medium jalapeño pepper, seeded and diced 1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes 1 (14.5-ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed 1 cup fresh or frozen corn kernels 6 cups vegetable broth 2 teaspoons chili powder 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander 1 bay leaf 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Additional salt and pepper, to taste Instructions Heat the oil in a sauté pan over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until softened, 5-7 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, for 1 minute more. Add the cooked onion to a 3-quart or larger slow cooker. Add the jalapeño, tomatoes, black beans, corn, broth, chili powder, cumin, coriander, bay leaf, 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, and 1/2 tea-

spoon black pepper to the slow cooker. Stir. Cook on low 8–10 hours, or high 4-6 hours. Season with additional salt and pepper to taste.

To freeze, allow the soup to cool, then freeze it in a large freezer bag or airtight plastic container, omitting the tortilla strips. To reheat, take the soup out

of the freezer and let it thaw in your refrigerator. If you’ve frozen the soup in a microwavesafe plastic container, you can use the thaw setting on

your microwave to thaw it. Once thawed, cook soup on the stovetop on medium heat until heated through or microwave in a microwavesafe container, stirring every

2-3 minutes, until heated through. Serve with tortilla strips, avocado, sour cream, cheese, fresh cilantro and any other toppings you like.

Pork chow mein If you love noodles – like we do – you’ll love chow mein. The secret to success is to have some of the noodles nice and crispy and others soft, and this is easiest to do in a wok. You could call this dish a one-wok wonder. INGREDIENTS 500g (1lb 2oz) pork tenderloin 1tsp Chinese five-spice powder Flaked sea salt Freshly ground black pepper 200g (7oz) dried medium egg noodles 4tbsp vegetable oil 2tbsp soft light brown sugar 2tsp cornflour 4tbsp dark soy sauce 2tbsp mirin (Japanese rice wine, from supermarkets) or dry sherry 1 red pepper, quartered, deseeded and sliced 1 large carrot, cut into thin strips, about 6cm (2½in) long 25g (1oz) fresh root ginger, peeled and very thinly sliced 3 garlic cloves, very thinly sliced 6 spring onions, sliced 50g (1¾oz) frozen peas 225g tin water chestnuts, drained, halved METHOD Using a sharp knife, carefully trim the excess fat and sinew from the pork. Cut the pork in half lengthways and then into thin slices. Put it in a bowl and toss it with the five-spice powder, ½tsp of salt and plenty of pepper, then set aside. Bring a saucepan of water to the boil. Add the egg noodles and separate the strands with a wooden spoon. Bring the water back to the boil and cook the noodles for 3-4 minutes, or according to the packet instructions, until tender. Drain and rinse them in a sieve under running water until cold, then toss

with 1tbsp of the vegetable oil and set aside. Mix the sugar and cornflour in a bowl and gradually stir in the soy sauce, mirin (or sherry) and 100ml (3½fl oz) water, then set aside. Heat 1tbsp of the oil in a wok or a large nonstick frying pan. Add the pork and stir-fry over a high heat for 2 minutes or until nicely browned. Transfer it to a plate and put the pan back on the heat. Add another 1tbsp of the oil and stir-fry the pepper and carrot for 2 minutes. Add the ginger, garlic, spring onions, peas and water chestnuts and stir-fry for 2 minutes until softened but

not soggy. Tip everything onto a plate. Pour the remaining oil into the pan and add the noodles. Stir-fry the noodles for 2-3 minutes, or until some are beginning to turn crisp and golden-brown. Tip the meat and vegetables back into the pan and stir-fry everything together, tossing all the ingredients for 1-2 minutes, or until they’re evenly mixed and piping hot. Stir the soy and mirin mixture again and pour it into the pan. Continue tossing everything together for 1-2 minutes, or until hot and glossy. Eat immediately.

Salted Chocolate Tart

Ingredients For the Tart Shell Pastry 2 cups plain flour, plus more for dusting 3 tablespoons sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, cold and cut into small chunks 1 large egg, separated 2 tablespoons ice water, plus more if needed For the Filling 1 cup double cream 1/2 cup milk

10 ounces milk chocolate, chopped 2 tablespoons sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 large eggs, at room temperature Method To make the pastry: combine the flour, sugar, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Add the butter and mix with a pastry blender or hands until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Make a well in the middle of the pastry. Combine the egg yolk with the ice water in a small bowl, whisking to blend; pour it into the well and work it in to bind the dough until it holds together without being too wet or sticky. Squeeze a small amount together, if it is crumbly, add more ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time. Form the dough into a disk and wrap in cling film; refrigerate for at least 30 minutes Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface into a 12-inch circle, about 1/4-inch thick. Carefully roll the dough up onto the pin (this may take a little practice) and lay it inside a 9inch tart pan with a removable bottom. Press the dough into the pan so it fits tightly; press the edges into the sides of the pan. It is important to press the dough evenly into every nook and corner of the ring, especially the scalloped edges. Shave off the excess hanging dough with a knife. Put the tart in the refrigerator for 15 minutes to relax. Preheat the oven to 175°C. Place the tart pan on a sturdy cookie sheet so it will be easy to move in and out of the oven. Line the tart with aluminum foil and add pie weights or dried beans to keep the sides of the tart from buckling. Bake for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and weights. Using a pastry brush, lightly coat the crust with a beaten egg white. Return to the oven and continue to bake for another 8 minutes until the tart is golden in color, but not brown. Remember the tart will be cooked again with the filling. It should be cooked but light in color so that it will not burn on the second bake. Set aside to cool and lower the oven temperature to 160°C. To make the filling: Heat the cream and milk in a pot over medium-low flame, until it simmers slightly around the edges. Remove from the heat; add the chopped chocolate and stir until melted and smoothed out. Add the sugar and salt and whisk until well incorporated. Beat the eggs in a small bowl until blended and add them to the chocolate mixture, stir until completely blended. Pour the filling into the cooled tart shell and bake at 160°C for 15 to 20 minutes until the filling is set and the surface is glossy. If you see any bubbles or cracks forming on the surface, take the tart out right away - that means it is beginning to become over baked. Cool before cutting.

Hay fever symptoms can be significantly reduced after three years of treatment, research suggests

Hay fever sufferers may be able to significantly reduce their symptoms such as

itchy red eyes and a runny nose by having treatment for three years, new

research suggests. Scientists from Imperial College London found peo-

ple with hay fever, an allergic reaction to pollen, were able to “suppress” the condition by taking pollen pills or undergoing injections. However, while a threeyear course of treatment was shown to markedly lessen symptoms “for several years”, two years of treatment did not bring the same benefits. Past studies have shown that exposing patients to increasing amounts of grass pollen over time – a type of immunotherapy – is an effective way to reduce severe symptoms in the long term. Hay fever has been estimated to affect as many as one in four people across the UK. The majority of these cases are initiated as a reaction to grass pollen. The new study, published in the journal JAMA,

involved patient volunteers at Royal Brompton Hospital in London. Experts assessed the effectiveness of two different immunotherapies which used grass pollen extract – as an injection or a pill taken under the tongue. A total of 106 patients were given either injection, tablets or a placebo. Overall, 92 patients completed the study. After a two-year course of treatment, the results showed that both therapies were effective at tackling symptoms. But one year after patients had stopped taking the medication the effects were no better than the placebo group. Lead author Professor Stephen Durham, head of allergy and clinical immunology at the

National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial and clinical lead for allergy services at Royal Brompton Hospital, said: “This study shows that whereas both immunotherapy treatments were highly effective, two years of treatment was insufficient for long-term benefits. “Clinicians and patients should continue to follow international guidelines that recommend a minimum of three years' treatment.” He added: “You treat patients for three years and then they have a big improvement in their hay fever for several years afterwards. Concluding, “exposing people to grass pollen in this way is a very effective treatment for people who really have debilitating hay fever.”

Understanding Parkinson’s Disease According to mainstream medicine, Parkinson's disease occurs due to a lack of a brain chemical called Dopamine. Dopamine is responsible for controlling smooth muscle movement and Parkinson's disease manifests as difficulties with walking, talking, swallowing and writing. In addition, there is a diminished sense of smell and a lack of facial expression as well as the characteristic shuffling of the feet. The first symptoms of Parkinson's diseases relate to diminished smell, confusion, and subtle personality changes. The symptoms of Parkinson's should not be confused with the normal ageing process which results in diminished senses and slower movements due to aching bones and joints. Some researchers believe that Parkinson's disease has many causes including environmental toxins, a lack of antioxidants in the body, genetic factors, and accelerated ageing. Antioxidants neutralize toxins called free radicals which damage the body in a process similar to rusting of iron. Studies show that the brains of people with Parkinson's disease have high levels of iron. And although iron is essential for the body, it can be very toxic in excessive amounts in

the brain. Some conditions are known to precede Parkinson’s disease, including long-term use of antibiotics, exposure to chemicals such as lead, and repeated head injury. Unbalanced nutrition is also a cause of Parkinson's, and a diet rich in meat is known to worsen symptoms. Some scientists believe that Parkinson's disease may originate from diseases of the digestive system as the earliest symptoms of Parkinson's disease are related to digestion and smell. In recent years, Scientists from Lund University have traced Parkinson's disease from the nerves in the stomach to the nerves in the brain. The human gut has a nervous system that is as complex as the brain and is called the 2nd brain. It also consumes and produces many of the chemicals that fire the brain. Most of the brain chemical serotonin is produced in the gut. People feel emotions in the gut rather than the brain. A healthy diet rich in Antioxidants from nuts, blue and black berries, fresh greens as well as healthy oils like coconut oil will help prevent Parkinson's disease. Vitamin D pills 'could stop colds or flu' Vitamin D supplements could spare more than three million people from colds or flu in the UK each year, researchers claim. The sunshine vitamin is vital for healthy bones, but also has a role in the immune system. The analysis, published in the British Medical Journal, argues food should be fortified with the vitamin. But Public Health England (PHE) says the infections data is not conclusive, although it does recommend supplements. These, it says, should be taken for improved bone and muscle health. The immune system uses vitamin D to make antimicrobial weapons that puncture holes in bacteria and viruses. But as vitamin D is made in the skin while out in the sun, many people have low levels during winter. Trials on using supplements to prevent infections have

given mixed results, so the researchers pooled data on 11,321 people from 25 separate trials to try to get a definitive answer. The team at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) looked at respiratory tract infections - which covers a wide range of illnesses from a sniffle to flu to pneumonia. Overall, the study said one person would be spared infection for every 33 taking vitamin D supplements. That is more effective than flu vaccination, which needs to treat 40 to prevent one case, although flu is far more serious than the common cold. There were greater benefits for those taking pills daily or weekly - rather than in monthly super-doses - and in people who were deficient in the first place. Why is vitamin D important? Its main function is to regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body, which are vital for the growth and maintenance of healthy bones, teeth and muscles. In extreme cases, low levels can lead to rickets in children - where the bones become soft and weak and misshapen as they continue to grow. In adults, vitamin D deficiency can lead to osteomalacia - causing severe bone pain and muscle aches. But there is a balance too much vitamin D can lead to high levels of calcium in the blood which can cause heart and kidney problems. Anyone with a chronic condition or taking medication should seek advice from their doctor. Vitamin D: Why do we all need to take a pill a day?

Vitamin D supplements should be taken in autumn and winter Line One of the researchers, Prof Adrian Martineau, said: "Assuming a UK population of 65 million, and that 70% have at least one acute respiratory infection each year, then daily or weekly vitamin D supplements will mean 3.25 million fewer people would get at least one acute respiratory infection a year." PHE already advises everyone to take vitamin D supplements in autumn and winter for the sake of healthy bones and muscles. They are recommended all year round for some people who get little sunlight on their skin, including people in care homes or those who cover up. However, there is considerable debate about the importance of the latest study. Prof Louis Levy, the head of nutrition science at PHE, said: "The evidence on vitamin D and infection is inconsistent and this study does not provide sufficient evidence to support recommending vitamin D for reducing the risk of respiratory tract infections." But Prof Martin Hewison, from the University of Birmingham and the Society for Endocrinology, said the findings were "striking". "I agree with the authors that this study supports a new indication for vitamin D beyond its established benefits for bone health," he added. And the research wing of the NHS, the National Institute for Health Research which funded the study, said the findings were "worthy of serious further debate". Ultimately, the researcher team at QMUL want vitamin D to be added to food like in the US where milk is fortified. Prof Martineau said: "Vitamin D fortification of foods provides a steady, low-level intake of vitamin D that has virtually eliminated profound vitamin D deficiency in several countries. "By demonstrating this new benefit of vitamin D, our study strengthens the case for introducing food fortification to improve vitamin D levels in countries such as the UK where profound vitamin D deficiency is common."

24 Squash is not a game for the faint-hearted. It is fast-paced, vigorous, and highly energetic. (This is also dependant on the players.) If you want to get fit, build up your heart rate, and sweat a few buckets, whilst engaging in some form of physical activity, squash could possibly be the game for you (or in some cases, it definitely won’t be). Squash is an indoor game, usually played with two players, but it can also be played with four (doubles). The court consists of four walls, all of which are used throughout. There is a line on the floor that indicates the middle of the court, plus another line on the front wall that indicates the same for that wall. When serving, the ball must go above the line on the front wall and land in the opponent’s side of the court, behind the middle line on the floor. If a player wins the point on his serve, he serves again and again until he loses a shot. However, the other player only wins the right to serve at this point, and will only notch up a point if he wins the following point too. The scoring system in squash is difficult to get to grips with at first, but is easy to get the hang of after a while. A match is usually played up to nine points, although many people prefer to play to eleven. Squash is not as popular as other racquet sports in Spain, perhaps because this sport is played inside, and with the lovely weather that we have here, outdoor sports such as tennis are preferred. Fortunately, in the Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa area there are squash facilities available. Torrevieja’s Palacio de Deportes is now equipped with two squash courts that are open to the public on a daily basis. These courts are situated in the fairly recently built racquet sports centre, which is located next to Torrevieja Football Club’s home ground. Booking a court can be done in two ways. If you just want to play a single game, you must go to the centre and book the court in person at reception. First of all, find out from the person on the desk whether the time that you wish to play is free, then, when this has been confirmed, you must purchase a ticket from the machine opposite. Following this, the receptionist will make a note of the time in his book and write the details on your ticket before handing it back to you. You can only do this in the same week that you wish to play and not before. A court for one hour costs 5€, which is for the court itself and not per person. To make things slightly cheaper and a lot easier when it comes to reserving a court, it is possible to buy a ‘bono’ for 40€. This is a ticket that entitles you to ten games, at a lower cost of just 4€. With the ‘bono’ you are allowed to reserve a court over the phone and this can be done by calling 966 111 222. Courts are available from Monday – Friday, every hour on the half hour, from 8.30am until 10.30pm; Saturdays from 8.30am – 1.30pm and 4.30pm – 8.30pm; and on Sundays from 8.30am – 1.30pm and 4.30pm – 7.30pm. Players must bring their own racquet and ball and they must wear trainers with a white sole. The centre is facilitated with changing rooms and hot showers plus lockers to store any valuable items.

Anyone for squash? Now we know how to book our court, one question still remains. Are tennis players better dressed than squash players? If you have to think about the answer, all you have to do is look at online images of Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Gregory Gaultier, and Ramy Ashour. Clearly, professional tennis players – or their handlers – seem to spend more time on picking the right accessories to ensure a coordinated look on the court. So here are a few things to consider when you invest in tennis or squash gear. Shirts and tops: When it comes to shirts, the younger players are going neon. If you are unsure whether you can carry one-off, check out this post by Liam Mannix titled Nike designs fluoro range for male tennis stars. Apart from Serena Williams, the women players appear to be slow to adopt the fluoro look. Shorts & Skirts: In the world of tennis and squash, shorts have gotten longer. While the shirts have gone neon, the shorts continue to be largely white, black, red, or blue. Skirts, on the other hand, have become marginally shorter when compared to a few years ago. Not surprisingly, they are often sold by the length of the skirt. Here’s a sample from Tennis Warehouse. Matching a top to a pair of shorts or a skirt should not be difficult to do. Racquets: This is the most expensive piece of equipment for both tennis and squash players. Picking a racquet based on its colour would be like betting on a horse based on its name! If you have a favourite racquet, it may be worth checking to see if the manufacturer offers options in terms of the colour of the frame. Grip: This is an easy one to fix. Players rightfully pay attention to the type of grip that they use, but largely ignore its colour. A red frame with a bright blue grip will do the job, but is certainly not aesthetically pleasing. Grips come in multitude of colours. Pick one that works with the colour of your racquet frame. Coordinated Look in Squash & TennisShoes: Court shoes are not cheap. Most players that I know don’t own more than one or two pairs of shoes. One for tennis and another one for squash is the norm. With court shoes becoming more and more colourful, matching them up with the rest of your outfit may become a challenge. If your shoes are largely neutral – black, white, grey etc. – you may be able to use colourful laces to create a look that is closer to the rest of your gear. Socks: This is another easy one to fix. If you are wearing bright blue socks with red shoes, make sure that the rest of your ensemble follows suit. At the very least, you can pick wristbands or headbands that bring it all together.

Hats and Visors: This one is for tennis players. Hats and visors are popular with female players and come in various shapes, colours, and patterns. Hats act as sunshades, make a fashion statement, and help hold your hair in place. Pick a couple that match your favourite tennis outfits and you are off to a good start. Headband: Tied headbands are in and the slip-on ones are passé. If you wear a headband when you play, you may want to consider buying a couple that match your shirt, shorts, or skirt. Wrist band: Wristbands come in all colours and sizes. Wristbands can easily be matched up with your headband, shirt, shorts, or your racquet grip. You can also buy multicoloured wristbands that enable you to mix and match when needed. Protective glasses: This applies to squash players who are smart enough to wear protective glasses on the court. Your favourite pair of glasses may not come with a bright yellow neon frame to match your shirt. You can always go with a neutral shade to ensure that it blends in with any outfit that you choose to wear on the court. Bag: This one is a nice to have. Like everything else, discussed above, colour is lower down on the list of features for people looking for a squash or tennis bag. If you are planning to invest in a new bag, you may want to add colour to list of things that you want. So there you have it. At the end of the day, what makes you feel good, and comfortable is what you should wear. Contrasting colours maybe your thing. Finally, it is about the game and not the clothes or the accessories. Unless, you are a tennis player!

Casino de Torrevieja

The ‘old’ Casino, as it is often referred to, is the oldest building in Torrevieja and sits majestically opposite the Port on the Paseo Vista Alegre, the town’s main promenade that runs along the seafront. These days, it is the norm to see the outside terrace populated with residents or tourists, enjoying a cool drink or coffee, most likely unaware that the building behind them is so much more than just a large cafeteria. Although this grand edifice is called a ‘casino’, it was never a gambling casino. In Spanish, this term has a totally different meaning. In January 1867, thirty-seven years after Torrevieja was officially named a town and segregated from Orihuela, a group of 76 citizens, prominent in Torrevieja’s cultural and social society, decided to create an association that would offer entertainment and leisure activities for its members, as well as providing education in certain areas and carrying out charitable acts in the community. This society was christened ‘Casino Numancia’ and by December of the same year its membership had grown to 90. In 1882 the Casino Numancia acquired a new name, which is still used to this day, the ‘Sociedad Cultural Casino de Torrevieja’. At this point in time the group held their meetings and based their headquarters in an old bakery, which forms part of the main building that we see today. Over the years, as the Casino grew in size and importance, its members bought up neighbouring properties and gradually converted them into the existing Casino that we see now. The old Casino covers a total area of 403,70 m² and consists of two main floors plus a large outside terrace and a smaller upstairs balcony. Upon entering the casino, you will find yourself in the 100m² salon de baile or ballroom. Today, this hall is used for exhibitions as well as an area for visitors to sit, have a drink and read the newspaper. The room is sumptuously decorated with magnificent chandeliers, imposing paintings, and lavish mirrors adorn the red walls, matching the amber furniture and heavy amber-coloured drapes. Passing through the ballroom the area is divided into two sections. On the left is the working bar, featuring a traditional mosaic bar area that serves everything from ‘churros and chocolate at 2,50 euro to delicious homemade tapas. To the right of the bar is probably the main attraction of the whole building – the Arabic Room. This is a typical old Andalucian patio styled room that was designed and built by Andalucian experts as an exact replica of a Granadine patio. It consists of intricately designed dark wood panels positioned above mosaic wall segments and several arches, often seen in Moorish architecture, at the top of each of the four walls. The ceiling has been removed and the room extends to the top floor where a splendid stained glass ceiling sits if you look above you. The Arabic room is also open for customers to sit and drink their coffee. The final social room on the ground floor is at the back of the building and is now known as the ‘television room’, although during the morning it is another area to sit and socialise. The room pays homage to Spain’s greatest literary group, the ‘Generación ‘98’, and features portraits of the most important writers and poets of this time including Antonio Machado, Azorín, Miguel de Unanumo and Pío Baroja. Following the stairs that lead up to the first floor, which can also be accessed by a lift, is a gallery of paintings that have been donated to the Casino by local artists. The paintings adorn the walls of the stairway as well as those of the upstairs balcony. The top floor is home to what are now a games and an activities room for the members of the Casino association. Here they can participate in pursuits such as dominos, card games, pool, embroidery, darts or reading. A small terrace that overlooks the Paseo Vista Alegre and the Port leads out from the front games room where members can sit and take in the fresh air.

Throughout the history of the Casino, the building and the society have been at the heart of Torrevieja’s cultural and social scene. The Casino building has hosted hundreds of events ranging from dances, poetry recitals, art exhibitions, conferences and even political speeches, whilst the society has created some of the most popular cultural events that still take place in the town today. Leading literary and political figures in Spain and also further a field have visited the Casino either on business or for pleasure, including Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, one of Spain’s most famous novelists and the present King and Queen of Spain. At the outbreak of the Civil War in Spain in July 1936, the Republican Party, the Frente Popular, seized the Casino, dissolved the society and converted the building into Army barracks and Frente Popular offices. At the end of the war in 1939, the building had to be rebuilt along with the rest of the town and its society, which proved to be difficult given the economic situation of the country after three years of internal upheaval, and so a ten-year mortgage loan was granted and the Casino was completely redecorated and restored to its former glory by December 1955. The same year, the Certamen de Habaneras was created and the Casino’s members did all that they could to ensure that the competition would be a huge success and place Torrevieja on the world map for cultural events. In December 1982, the Sociedad Cultural Casino de Torrevieja celebrated its 100th anniversary. Although it was founded in 1867, it acquired its present name and status in 1882. The Casino’s cultural society was made up of members as well as an elected committee consisting of President, VicePresident, Secretary and Treasurer. Many of the society’s Presidents have been leading figures

in Torrevieja’s political and cultural spheres. Many of them have streets named after them such as Ramón Gallud Mínguez, Manuel Martínez Carrión and Joaquín Aguierre Calero. In 1998, it was proposed by the President and unanimously voted in that men could enter the Casino rooms wearing shorts, which they had previously not been able to do. And extraordinarily, after 130 of the society’s existence, women were finally allowed to become members in 1996! One of the things that sets Torrevieja’s Casino apart from some of the other Casinos in cities such as Alicante or Murcia, is that the Torrevieja Casino has always opened its doors to the public, which is still the case to this day. Members of the public are able to sit outside at all times when the Casino is open to enjoy a refreshment, whilst viewing the inside building is permitted from 9am until 2pm, after which the members meet up to socialise and partake in a few leisurely pastimes.

The V Vega Baja Artichoke Tapas Route, which is organised by the Almoradí Catering Association, was intended to put this unique product under the spotlight through a culinary route throughout local establishments. TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

I’m no fan of cheap documentary shows featuring celebrities on a jolly, but The Real Marigold Hotel is a glorious exception. After the success of the first series on BBC 1, we have a new bunch of folk trying out life in India, and it works on both levels in giving us a glimpse on life in that country, as well as checking out how a bunch of people that don’t know each other, get on. It’s very enjoyable and of course interesting to see how some people have aged well, or perhaps not so well. Lionel Blair in his lateeighties is fun, and hey, he smokes cigarettes! Dennis Taylor is full of his Irish geniality, but I was surprised to see “Just Good Friends” star Paul Nicholas with most of his eighties hair all gone. Life in India is so different but cheap, and I’m enjoying the insights like the fact you have to cue up at government-run shops to buy a restricted amount of alcohol. We don’t know how lucky we are! The BBC drama department just keeps rolling out the hits, and we now have a

Sunday night gripper in the shape of SS-GB based on the Len Deighton novel. The nasty Nazis are in charge of a large part of Britain back in 1941, and we have our star/hero Sam Riley playing a high-ranking London copper who is caught in the middle having to work with the occupiers. He’s no fan of them, but he believes in the concepts of law and order, which leads to complications as understandably resistance members think he is a traitor. This drama is much more than an occupation story, as Riley has to work with a new high-ranking German who is brought in from Berlin because of something that has got Adolf and his mates really worried. So we have a big spy and detective element running through SS-GB, and it was an impressive watch, with some great designs and CGI-creations of bombravaged London to marvel at. One gripe though was some of the “mumbling soundtrack”, which understandably led viewers to complain, and forced me to

hit my subtitle feature at home. Why will modern TV drama producers never learn over this particular problem that keeps on happening? Also in 1941, we literally had an explosive finish to ITV’s The Halcyon, which has been an enjoyable Monday night romp. Yes there were a couple of bor-

ing episodes in the middle, but things built up a great head of steam towards the end, and I loved the way that the nasty Nazi spy that was trying to get into the knickers of the hotel owner, got his head bashed in by her. Please ITV stick with this silly fun for a second series, and also, as I wrote a few

weeks ago, please bung it on a Sunday night in the old Downton slot. Back-stabbing and manipulation is the name of the game of US drama Billions which returned to Sky Atlantic on Tuesday. I just root for Damien Lewis and his vile character of hedgefund company owner Bobby Axelrod, who dumps on

everybody in sight, to keep on getting away with his crooked behaviour! The district attorney trying to hang him is played by Paul Giamatti, who is just as low in trying to get his man, and it makes for an absorbing view, with a regular use of foul language to add to the nasty atmosphere! Watch it, and you’ll be hooked.

The world is full of different cuisines and thousands of different meals. Yet when they’re reduced to their essence, there are actually just a handful of ingredients that our bodies absolutely need from our food to survive. These essential molecules come in a series of familiar sounding groups: carbohydrates, fat, protein, vitamins and minerals - but Michael and James discover plenty of surprises as they seek to understand exactly why each class of molecule is so important for the way our bodies work. RICHARD CAVENDER

BlueMoon Solutions www.bluemoonsolutions.es

BlueMoon Solutions is the computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca. BlueMoon Solutions comes to you at home or at work. Their personal service covers from Alicante to Pilar de la Horadada.

Richard moved to Spain ten years ago having left his management background behind in the UK and decided to use his IT skills to help home users and small businesses with their PC problems. Now a relaxed 'computer man' he is out and about in the Spanish sun every day, making house and shop calls and using his vast experience and qualifications to sort out the problem there and then. Computers are his hobby as well as his work so don’t be surprised to get an answer to your email in the early hours!

ADVICE: Sid wanted some advice on backups.

Q A

I have a 1TB hard drive for backing up my computer. I have it set to back up midnight every Friday using the windows 7 backup program. The problem is although the computer is backed up I cannot access any folders or files as it has been saved as a disk Image. What free back up program do you suggest that will run in conjunction with the windows 7 back up program so that I can access files and folders on the Hard Drive?

Hi Sid, you are absolutely correct, the data that is backed up by Windows 7’s backup application stores the data in such a format that it is not readable directly, you need to go back into the backup program to read the data. Like you I much prefer to store my backups (space allowing) as a direct copy of the individual files – that way I can see what data has been backed up and access the files directly should I need to. There are a number of applications out there that will allow you do perform backups in this way, one of the best ones that I have used is called “Allway Sync” and you can get a free copy of it at www.allwaysync.com The great thing about this product is that it will, should you require, keep multiple locations in sync – by that I mean if you delete a file from one location, allway sync will remove the file from the backup, keeping both locations exactly synchronised. It has the facility to be scheduled, so you could still run your backups at midnight on Fridays and as I mentioned before it stores the files in the same format as they are in the source location so you can view the files directly in the destination location.

RACE ACE PIRRO TO BE REUNITED WITH CARS FROM HIS PAST Five times Le Mans winner Emanuele Pirro will be taken back in time at next week’s Historic Motorsport International (23-26 February at ExCeL, London) when he will be reunited with two significant cars that have featured in his long and distinguished racing career. They include the Formula 1 Scuderia Italia Dallara F191 he raced in the 1991 season and the Audi A4 quattro ST he used to defend his 1996 German Supertouring championship title. The Dallara – in which Pirro finished sixth in Monaco – is just one of several iconic F1 machines at the show and will form part of a display from the Historic European Formula One Race Car Entrants organisation, better known as FORCE. The Audi from 1997 is the final racing A4 quattro built and represents an era when its four-wheel drive technology helped the company dominate Supertouring racing across Europe. As well as Pirro winning in Germany, 1996 saw Audi claim titles in the UK and Italy. Pirro and Audi were also Italian

Supertouring champions in 1994 and 1995. The Audi will be one of the star cars on the Dunlop stand – technical partners

with Audi during its Supertouring programme – and will be rubbing shoulders with a Jaguar D-type. Although the cars are sepa-

rated by 50 years, Dunlop produces racing rubber for both… and for many more historic racers besides. As well as a facsimile of

the famous Dunlop bridge from Le Mans, the stand will also have 12 mounted wheels and tyres covering a diverse range of cars includ-

ing the Jaguar XKSS on period-style R5 rubber to the slick-shod Group A Ford Sierra Cosworth. Pirro will join the show’s guest of honour, Jacky Ickx, and fellow Le Mans winners Derek Bell, Jackie Oliver and JürgenBarth at a special gala celebration to mark the opening evening of HMI’s sister event, The London Classic Car Show. Other stars due to appear include TV’s classic car guru Quentin Willson and Indycar racing legend Dario Franchitti. Pirro will also be at Historic Motorsport International today, Friday, and visitors will be able to see him being interviewed in the Supagard Theatre at 1:30pm. Historic Motorsport International is being held alongside The London Classic Car Show, now in its third year and looking to build on the record 33,000 visitors who visited the 2016 event. Both shows are staged by Brand Events, the company behind a raft of successful motoring events including CarFest, Top Gear Live and the recent IGNITION Festival of Motoring.

Taking On The Big Boys

Spain's top tennis prospect from Torrevieja has abandoned his bid to become world number one junior by launching an assault on the ATP men's professional circuit at the age of 16, writes DONNA GEE. Nicola Kuhn(pictured with 2017 Australian Open champion Roger Federer), began the year at number five in the under-18 rankings and would have been among the top seeds for all four junior Grand Slams this year. However, the blond six-footer and his advi-

Dustin On Top

America’s Dustin Johnson became world number one for the first time with victory at the Genesis Open. Johnson, 32, carded a par 71 on Sunday’s final day to finish on 17 under with compatriot Scott Brown and Belgium's Thomas Pieters tied second on 12 under. The US Open champion had to play both his third and fourth rounds on Sunday after storms disrupted the tournament. England's Justin Rose finished in a five-way tie for third as he shot a fourth-round 68 to finish on 11 under. "I believe in myself. I think I'm a great player," said

Johnson after Sunday's victory in California. "To finally get a win at Riviera feels good because I've finished second here a couple of times, lost in a play-off, and felt I should have won a couple of other times." The American continued his fine form from the first two rounds, dropping only two shots over the entire weekend. Victory preserves Johnson's record of having won at least once in each of the 10 seasons he has been a professional. The Masters, the first major of the year, takes place in Augusta at the start of April.

sors feel his future will be better served by concentrating on the ITF Futures and Challenger circuit, picking up crucial ATP ranking points and breaking into the men's elite. Consequently, the La Mata teenager pulled out of last month's junior Australian Open – opting instead to compete in men's Futures events in Egypt. "Basically my idea this year is to play pro tournaments, so we decided not to go to Melbourne,'' Nico told me after making a big impression in Sharm El Sheikh. "I may be playing in the junior French Open and at Wimbledon, but I hope not, because that means I am in the ATP top ranking and playing the big tournaments. It's a tough goal but I am taking it match by match and we will see how it goes.'' Unseeded Kuhn, a product of former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero’s Equelite tennis academy in Villena, stormed into the semi-final in Egypt, beating experienced pros Jose Vidal Azorin, Ilija Vukic and No.4 seed Lorenzo Frigerio before bowing out to topseeded Aldin Setkic – a player 12 years his senior. "I'm really improving,'' he insisted. "Day by day it gets better and I am gaining much confidence which is a good sign''. Austrian-born Nico moved to Spain with his Russian mother and German father when he was three months old and has been hooked on tennis since he was a toddler. He was voted the Most Valuable Player of the 2015 Junior Davis Cup and a year ago was ATP-ranked way down at number 1,997 in men’s tennis. The latest ranking list confirms a remarkable rise of more than 1,250 places in 12 months – and adds emphasis to the growing belief that he is destined to be the Rafa Nadal of Spain’s next generation. So what are Kuhn’s targets for 2017? ''I would like to end the year under 200 in the ATP rankings,'' he says optimistically. ''It’s a tough goal but I am taking at match by match and we’ll see how it goes.’’

A Careful Ruse SAMM (Sailing Association Mar Menor) hold a regular monthly meeting where members can get together, report on their activities and decide on future policy, and January's gathering featured a bit of deception to fool one of their members The Race Committee presented their Special Award for services to the 2016 race programme to George Noden, who had served as Race Officer last year. As soon as he got the trophy from Race Chairman, Terry Chapman (pictured), he immediately handed it back, with the tables turned well and truly turned! It had been decided that Terry would get the award for his work over the last five years, with the committee working quietly to make sure that he knew nothing about it! SAMM run a regular Spring and Autumn series of mixed boat races using the RYA PY handicap system of scoring. They run on alternate Sundays on the Mar Menor at the CTD sports centre, Los Narejos. The Spring 2017 Series starts on March 5th with registra-

tion at 10.00 am. Visiting boats are welcome and, if you are interested, you can find out more on the Racing section of SAMM website www.sailingmarmenor.com and then click on the ‘Racing’ image on the puzzle picture.

Valverde Again

Murcia cyclist Alejandro Valverde claimed his fifth Tour of Andalucia win in six years on Sunday as he held off compatriot Alberto Contador to win by just one second,. It keeps his winning run going after taking the oneday Tour of Murcia event the previous weekend. Belgium's Tim Wellens won the 151.5km fifth stage from Setenil de las Bodegas to Coin in a breakaway group in a time of 3hrs

58min 31sec from Australia's Simon Clarke and another Belgian Victor Campenaerts. Both Valverde and Contador crossed the line as part of the peloton 1min 45sec back. "It wasn't an easy day at all," Valverde said. "It was cold, windy, rainy, there was all sorts, but in the end there weren't any attacks and that was better for us." France's Thibaut Pinot was third, six seconds back overall on Valverde.

Send In The Clowns

CD TORREVIEJA 0 ONTINYENT CF 2 It may have been carnival parade day in Torrevieja, but the clowns were out in force in the shape of the officials in charge of last Sunday's crucial match for Torry at the Nelson Mandela stadium. Livewire Nica in midfield skipped round his opponent and was unceremoniously felled to the ground in such an obvious fashion that the crowd bayed for a caution, only to see the hapless referee wave play on! Ivan collected the loose ball and sped towards goal where his shot was deflected by the foot of goalkeeper Buba, but only into the path of the on-rushing Vicente who toe-poked it into his own goal in the 15th minute. The crowd gasped in collective disbelief. Nobody in the Torry camp was laughing on the half hour mark when Lewis Allen was adjudged to have handled the ball deliberately inside the penalty box. Far from it, as the tireless striker, back helping his colleagues, had closely binded his arms to his body to ensure no flailing arm caught the ball by accident or otherwise, but ball having hit arm, the

spot kick was bizarrely awarded by the referee. Domenech had his shot saved by Buba, but the ball rebounded to him and he headed back towards the goal. Once more Buba got to the ball, but could only palm it into the net. Nobody was laughing, but it did seem as though someone was playing a nasty joke on the Salineros. Torry more than held their own against their top four placed visitors, but yet again the inability to score was at the heart of their problems. Lewis played the out and out striker role, with Beltran sitting behind him this time. Luis Carlos and Pastor occupied the wings giving the potential for a four strong attack. In reality, the front line were disjointed with rarely more than one attacker threatening the solid Ontinyent back line. Lewis made something from a deep cross to go close in the first period, and then Pastor wriggled through in the second only to fail at the final hurdle. It was all the more disheartening given the work rate and effort of the entire team. The supporters were spitting feathers as they exited the ground, wonder-

ing how referee Pérez Romero(nickname Coco?) and his cohorts had been given the chance to officiate the match. Losing games, especially with relegation beckoning, often sees the officials blamed, but in this case they truly did undermine the work and determination of CD Torrevieja. The only solace for them came from the fact that Almoradi lost (see right), and that the relegation clash between Muro and Bunol finished in a goaless draw. It means though that Torry are second from bottom, and eight points away from Bunol and safety. Torrevieja now travel to Castellon this Sunday for a 5.00 pm kick-off against the team sitting safely in second place and any points there will be very tough to win. But then Torry has no less than three matches at home over the first three Sundays in March, with a midweek trip to lowly Muro sandwiched in-between. It’s just about reached the point of no return with Torry fans hoping that there will be no mad March hare to follow on from last Sunday’s carnival clowns that were mascarading as the match officials.

Almoradí Setback

PATERNA CF 3 CD ALMORADI 0 After two wins and a draw, Almoradi went in high spirits to Paterna on Sunday, but they got a dreadful start after Tobías put the home side into the league in the fourth minute. That ironically followed a bright beginning from Almoradi who came straight out of the traps with a good run from Pablo setting up a strike for Pablo. That though in truth was the most dangerous moment that Paterna faced, and they

took control of the match and should have at least gone in two-nil up at halftime, despite the brave attempts of Almoradi to get into the contest. The second half was fairly tedious to watch, and it wasn’t until the 82nd minute that midfielder Gaby doubled the Paterna advantage, and then Moscoso added a third (pictured below) in added time. Next for Almoradi, who are six points off safety, is Sunday’s home match

against mid-table Burriol. Elsewhere in the Valencian regional third division, Orihuela climbed to seventh spot after their twonil win at Recambios Colon. It means they are seven points behind four-placed Novelda, and now get ready to entertain Crevillente in a local clash this Sunday, after they drew two-two with Villarreal. Elche Ilicitano beat Rayo Ibense one-nil, but now have a blank weekend.

Weekend Rugby Last weekend’s action in the Murcia FERRMUR under-18 cadetes league, saw the Torrevieja Tigers (pictured in blue) record a fine 42-31 victory away to CURM Cartagena.

The ITV Orihuela Vega Baja under-18 side lost by 43 points to 15 at home to Lorca. The senior Orihuela team return to action tomorrow, when they travel to

Albacete, whilst the combined San Javier Squalos and Totana senior side entertain the Rugby Murcia team at their ground in Totana this Saturday with a 5.45 pm kick-off.

A Dream Return

Blushes Saved

Great Away Day

REAL MADRID 2 ESPANYOL 0 Substitute Gareth Bale made a goalscoring return from an ankle injury as he scored Real Madrid's second in a comfortable win over Espanyol on Saturday. Los Periquitos had not won at the Bernabeu since 1996, but looked organised in the early stages of the game, though they went behind when Alvaro Morata headed Isco's cross past David Lopez in the 33rd minute. Morata's goal put Real on top and they found themselves in an utterly dominant position, though they left it late to kill off the game - despite 13 corners being awarded their way - when Bale, on as a substitute in the 71st minute, picked up Isco's pass on the left and fired home to confirm the three points. After scoring and the final whistle, Bale had plenty to say to the Real Madrid president, Florentino Perez, in a secret meeting that clearly wasn’t secret. Bale allegedly told Perez after the game that he’s fed up with being in Cristiano Ronaldo's shadow, and the “special treatment” that the striker gets. Bale said that he wanted to be looked after in the same way.

A Real Shock

VALENCIA 2 REAL MADRID 1 Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said his side lacked "cleverness" as their slow start cost them dearly on Wednesday night. Simone Zaza gave Valencia the lead in the fifth minute with a brilliant shot on the turn, and Fabian Orellana added the second in the ninth. Cristiano Ronaldo headed Real back into contention just before half-time, but they were unable to build on their momentum after the break. Real remain on top of La Liga, one ahead of Barcelona and three clear of Sevilla in third, and still have one game in hand on both of their title rivals. They have a tough match coming on Sunday at Villarreal. "The truth is we lost the game in 10 minutes," Zidane said. “We had 80 minutes to rescue the game and tried, but we lacked many things today.

BARCELONA 2 LEGANES 1 A late penalty from Lionel Messi salvaged a Sunday night win over lowly Leganes for a below-par Barcelona at the Nou Camp. After Luis Suarez set up Messi for his 16th goal in his last 17 games just four minutes in, it looked ominous for Leganes. However, the visitors put in a spirited showing and got a deserved equaliser in the 71st minute through substitute Unai Lopez. With the whistles bellowing from the stands, Neymar won a spot-kick in stoppage time, which was emphatically converted by Messi. The result ensured Barca closed the gap to Real Madrid at the top of La Liga to one point, but another lacklustre showing will have done little to alleviate the pressure on Luis Enrique's shoulders. The atmosphere at the Nou Camp was fractious on the back of Barca’s thrashing in Paris in the Champions League, with some fans jeering and whistling both Enrique and midfielder Andre Gomes to express their dissatisfaction. A section of Barca supporters also sang Enrique's name, which was then greeted with further disapproval. "I accept that they whistle at me, that the fans are hurt because of Paris, but not that they whistle at the players," Enrique told reporters. "I do not understand. As a fan, whistling a player from your own team does not make sense. Anyone can show their disagreement however they want. But in the case of Andre it annoys me.” Barcelona are a point behind Real Madrid, but the league leaders have two games in hand over their rivals and Barca face a tough trip to Atletico Madrid this Sunday afternoon.

Routine Victory

Enrique Backed

CD MONTESINOS 2 FB REDOVAN 0 Montesinos were not on top form on Sunday but they got a result that keeps them in fourth place in the regional group 16 table, and three points behind the leaders Benijofar in a very tight league. The result was achieved with striker Vaz out through to suspension, and they were without Macan who was injured. A cold windy day was not good for the fast, free flowing football that Monte have played this season, but they took all the points with a goal in each half, the first scored by Carlos Ventura and the second by German with an assist from Ventura. It all meant that Monte kept up their unbeaten record under manager Carlos Perez. Monte are away to sixth-placed Atletico Orihuela this weekend.

Take That!

Kevin Gameiro netted the quickest La Liga hat-trick in over 20 years on Saturday as Atletico Madrid staged a late blitz to stun lowly Sporting Gijon. Diego Simeone's side were level at 1-1 going into the final 10 minutes when Gameiro struck three times in four minutes and 45 seconds to seal victory. It was the quickest treble since Brazilian Bebeto's hat-trick for Deportivo La Coruna against Albacete in October 1995.

LUGO 1 ELCHE 2 The frustration of being an Elche fan this season is that the Ilicitanos have equipped themselves well against some of the better sides in the Segunda Division, but have faltered against teams that they should beat if they are to get into the promotion mix. So it was last Friday that the Jekyll and Hyde nature of the side displayed itself with an excellent result at Lugo, who have high hopes of getting into the end of season play-offs. Elche were two-nil up within 26 minutes as Borja Valle first struck the ball into the net in the 19th minute giving keeper José Juan no chance. Borja Valle, who was in excellent form , hit a shot that the Lugo keeper saved, but the ball fell into the path of Elche’s top scorer Nino to net again. The visitors dominated, but the home side pulled one back a minute into added time, with Calavera the scorer. The expected onslaught came from Lugo in the second half, but Elche held firm, and a great late save from Elche’s Juan Carlos stopped the Segunda’s top scorer Joselu from grabbing a point for his side. Elche now entertain Huesca tomorrow afternoon (6.00 pm kick-off), with the visitors lying 10th in the table , just a point above the Ilicitanos.

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu (pictured) has backed Luis Enrique to continue as manager next season, despite last week’s defeat at Paris Saint-Germain, and a limp home La Liga win over Leganes (see above). Enrique’s contract at the Nou Camp expires in the summer, with reports suggesting that the Barcelona players expect him to leave the club at the end of the season. But Bartomeu told Barca TV that the Barcelona hierarchy was fully behind Enrique and that a decision on his future would be made in April. "We agreed with him a while ago that we would talk in April," he said. "Now it is time to focus on the games that are coming up. Luis Enrique is the coach that we want, he is doing a fantastic job, and with the exception of Paris, we are happy with results."

Barcelona star Neymar, along with his current club, and his former employers Brazilian club Santos will stand trial on fraud and corruption charges after their appeals were turned down by Spain's high court on Monday. The charges relate to the player's 50 million euro transfer to Barcelona from Santos in the summer of 2013. Neymar's mother Nadine Goncalves and the family company N&N also had their appeals rejected, and they cannot appeal against the high court's decision. The case stems from a complaint by Brazilian investment group DIS, which owned part of Neymar's transfer rights and alleges that it received less money than it was entitled to when Neymar made the switch. Investigations were carried out in Spain and Brazil into whether any part of Neymar's transfer fee had been concealed when he made the move from Brazil to Spain.

It’s A Fix

A Pamplona judge has charged three former Real Betis players for their alleged involvement in match-fixing three years ago. Former directors of Osasuna were also charged for allegedly paying 650 thousand euros to Amaya Carazo, Jordi Figueras and Xavi Torres to help Osasuna stay in the first division in the 2013-14 season. Court documents showed that the money was paid to have Betis defeat Osasuna rival Valladolid in the second-to-last round and to lose to Osasuna in the last round. Both results happened, Betis defeated Valladolid 4-3 and lost to Osasuna 2-1 but all three clubs were relegated. Eighteen people were charged, most of them with links to Osasuna, including former president Miguel Archanco. The charges include fraud and sports corruption.

Happy Leo

Lionel Messi could not be happier than at Barcelona, and can crown his status as an all time great by winning the World Cup with Argentina, national coach Edgardo Bauza said on Wednesday. "I can see just how happy he is at Barcelona with his family around him," said Bauza, who has been at the helm of the Argentine national team since August 2016. "Of course when Leo is happy that helps him give his best performance, morale is crucial for form," said the 59-year-old former defender. "A footballer is happy when he is playing and winning, otherwise he is rarely happy," said Bauza.

For those of us of a certain vintage, myself included, the EFL Cup Final between Manchester United and Southampton this Sunday ( February 26th) will stir memories of the 1976 FA Cup Final, writes NEIL SAMBROOK. Despite Second Division Southampton upsetting the odds and winning 1-0, thanks to a Bobby Stokes(pictured) goal, it was not an era-defining final in the way 1953, 1965 or 1973 were, but the pitch was immaculate and the sun shone – a foretaste of the summer to follow. The summer of 1976 was the warmest of the century. Friday 3rd August 1990 was declared the hottest day of the 20th Century – a day I remember distinctly being the fifth birthday of my eldest son, his little friends not interested in the bouncy castle hired for the occasion in favour of being continually doused by the garden hose, but for the most prolonged spell without rain 1976 eclipsed previous records. With the timing for which British weather is renowned, the last time it rained for over three months that summer was Monday 31st May – a Bank Holiday, naturally. That date has entered the annals of rock music history due to a skyscraper performance, even by their unique standards, by The Who, headlining a one day festival at Charlton Athletic football ground. It was a grim day at The Valley, the atrocious weather more comparable with November than Whitsun, the huge crowd bad-tempered and drenched. But such is mythology surrounding this monumental show, it is claimed that twenty minutes before they went on the Almighty, clearly a Who fan, intervened – as the rain stopped and a late-evening sun appeared in the south London sky. Which is pretty much where it stayed until September - such was the drought of 1976, Britain suffered its first hosepipe ban since World War Two, with standpipes appearing in towns and cities where the water shortage was at its worst. This sweltering summer also brought a tour by the West Indies cricket team, their demolition of England at The Oval in lateAugust taking place at a venue where the normally green outfield had been scorched away almost to dust. So Southampton to beat Manchester United on Sunday, West Indies to overcome England in the cricket and a long, hot summer for the UK? We shall soon find out.

FIGHT TALKS

Britain's Amir Khan is in talks with Manny Pacquiao to be the WBO world welterweight champion's next title challenger, both boxers have said. Khan said on Twitter: "Currently negotiating with Manny. Coming soon. Watch this space!" Six-weight world champion Pacquaio, who said his next fight will be in the United Arab Emirates, added: "My team and I are in negotiations with Amir Khan for our next fight. A further announcement is coming soon." The 38-year-old Filipino retired in April, but returned to claim the belt by beating Jessie Vargas in November.

LEWIS WORRY

Lewis Hamilton says he believes the new faster Formula 1 cars this year will be a "massive challenge". The Mercedes driver said he had trained hard but had no idea whether he was fit enough for cars which could be four seconds a lap faster than 2016. "I don't know if I'll be easily fit enough, or will struggle a bit or be super-underneath and need to work harder," the 32-year-old said.

THE ITALIAN JOB

England rugby coach Eddie Jones will name his starting XV and replacements this Friday morning as he gets ready to rack up the points against lowly Italy in Sunday’s Six Nations clash at Twickenham(4.00pm, live on ITV). Centre Jonathan Joseph was cut out of the squad on Wednesday, having played in all 15 Tests. Elliot Daly is favourite to start at outside centre for the Six Nations table-toppers, with Ben Te'o also pushing for a starting berth, while James Haskell is set to return on the open-side flank. Meanwhile, Italy have recalled Exeter centre Michele Campagnaro for Sunday's match. Wing George North has recovered from a bruised thigh to start for Wales in their clash tomorrow against Scotland at Murrayfield (3.25pm, live on BBC 1). The 24-year-old replaces Alex Cuthbert in the only change from the 21-16 defeat by England in Cardiff. The second part of Saturday’s double-header sees Ireland entertain France in Dublin (5.50pm, live on ITV), with the home side looking to avenge a one point defeat by the French last year.

UP FOR THE CUP Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney, who may be China-bound in the summer, is likely to be on the bench, at best, for Sunday’s EFL Cup final against Southampton at Wembley(5.30pm, live on Sky Sports 1). Rooney has missed the last five matches through a combination of a muscle injury and root canal treatment and seems highly unlikely to be recalled, with a Rooney-less United cruising through to the next stage of the Europa League at St Etienne on Wednesday. Meanwhile Southampton right-back, Cedric Soares, is backing his side to pull off a surprise win on Sunday, akin to what his national side, Portugal, did in Euro 2016. “Nobody expected Portugal to do it in the Euros and here for Saints is the same,” he said. “We need to enjoy it, but we must get the win because we don’t always get these moments in life. We just need to do everything to achieve the win because in 10 years’ time you want to look back and remember what a great game we had there.” Sunday’s clash is a Wembley rematch of the famous FA Cup final upset of 1976 which the Saints won one-nil. More memories from that time on page 47.
