seven month operation by the Guardia Civil to track down a dangerous gang that robbed a La Zenia mobile phone shop in August, has led to three arrests being made in the Rojales and Torrevieja areas. Two men (aged 28 and 30) of Spanish and Bulgarian nationalities were detained, along with a 28year-old Spanish woman.

They are also accused of stealing goods from lorries and then selling them to specialist buyers, with the gang said to have assets and stolen items worth over half a million euro. Last August, over 24 thousand euro was seized after two of the gang struck at the Dog and Bone store in La Zenia. They pulled up on a motorbike and then went

inside, still wearing their helmets, and forced the shop staff and customers to lie on the floor. The duo then went and assaulted a female teller at the Eurochange booth, taking the money, and then made an quick exit on their motorbike. The Guardia said that the gang was involved in drug trafficking as well as in staging robberies, with Guardia

agents in Alicante and Pilar de la Horadada following up the hold up at La Zenia, by identifying them as stealing the contents of lorries. Two vehicles had 400 thousand euro worth of items removed on the AP-7 in the Ibi area of Alicante Province. Two home searches were carried out in Rojales and Torrevieja, with two indoor marijuana plantations discovered, in addition to associated drug equipment. The list of seized items included two high-end cars worth 25 thousand euro each; two large motorcycles; a large range of electronic and computer equipment including a laptop and a dozen mobile phones; and five thousand euro in cash. The Guardia said they uncovered evidence that the gang was planning to strike again, with the two male members being refused bail by the judge.

RETURN TO MISERY

ir carriers like Vueling, Easyjet and Ryanair were forced to cancel or reschedule flights to France and Spain this week due to a five-day strike by French air traffic controllers. Thousands of flights to and from the UK were among those forced to have been scrapped, with a string of delays and cancellations hitting services using Alicante-Elche and San Javier airports. The lobby group Airlines for Europe, of which Easyjet

and Ryanair are members, said that last year was a record year for air traffic controller disputes, many of which involving French workers, with 41 strike days logged. Ryanair’s marketing director, Kenny Jacobs (pictured), said: “We call on the French Government and European Commission to take immediate action to prevent thousands of European consumers from having their travel plans disrupted by a tiny group of ATC unions

going on strike.” "They cannot stand idly by and allow another summer

of disruption and travel misery for European consumers to take place."

A man who had a stash of plastic bags full of marijuana in his car, had his journey on the AP-7 brought to a premature end by Guardia Civil officers operating out of Torrevieja. The man, a 35-year-old Spaniard from Alicante City, was nicked by the Guardia close to the motorway exit for Los Montesinos, after

the drugs were discovered at a routine check. Some 21 kilos of marijuana were discovered in big plastic bags in the boot, as well as underneath the back seats. The bags were seized along with his car and 350 euro, with the man now facing criminal charges of drug trafficking.

A fire raged for three hours last Friday afternoon in Fuente Don Juan in the Torremendo area, hitting around 10 thousand square metres of hillside. Orihuela local police officers and Valencia forestry brigades joined forces with firefighters to extinguish the blaze, which started in a property, and spread quickly. Nobody was injured in the incident. The weekend brought a number of scrubland fires

including one in the Hondon area, and a small fire at La Mata Natural Park affecting some 1,500 square metres, which was reported to authorities by residents in Torrevieja's La Siesta and El Limonar urbanisations, and at Santa Pola. The area has been put on alert for a high risk of fires with everybody asked to be extra vigilant by taking rubbish home and never discarding smoking materials, especially from vehicles.

Question Time

Ex-San Javier mayor Juan Hernández has been ordered to testify in front of a judge on Tuesday March 28th over corruption allegations stretching back a number of years involving the awarding of local building contracts.

The investigating judge has warned Hernández, who has failed to appear in court on previous occasions, that he will be arrested this time and jailed if he refuses the request. The investigations have

included the seizure of documents from building firms Urdemasa, Inmoworld, and the Roda Beach Golf Resort in attempt to uncover the business relationship between them and the mayor.

Drug Swoops

Prosecutors have called for a 15 year prison sentence for a 39-year-old Crevillente man (picture from the Informacion newspaper), who is accused of trying to kill his ex-wife by planting a bomb in her car because he did not want to pay 600 euro a month for child maintenance. The homemade device, as reported in The Courier at the time, exploded on an Elche street in November 2014, with the woman suffering burns and injuries that took four months to

heal. The man, who denies the charge, appeared before Alicante Provincial Court this week, with prosecutors also looking for 28 thousand euro as compensation to the victim, in addition to paying for damage to the Peugeot 206 car. The defendant said that “he was being accused of something he had not done”, whilst prosecutors said he was motivated to kill his former partner over a dispute of involving the payment of maintenance to their two children.

A Fistful Of Euros A 67-year-old Russian man was stopped from flying out to Berlin from AlicanteElche airport, after was found to have 100 thousand euro hidden in his jacket. The elderly traveller had two hundred 500 euro notes sewn into the inner lining of his jacket, with the Guardia Civil suspecting that he and the money would have eventually ended up in a non-European Union country. The limit on taking undeclared cash in and out of an EU country is 10 thousand euro.

Quick Quake

An earthquake measuring 2.7 on the Richter scale struck yesterday morning at 11.48 am between Los Montesinos and Torrevieja, with the epicentre between the San Luis and El Chaparral urbanisations. The three second tremor was felt 12 kilometres away as far away as Pilar de la Horadada and Dolores.

Mobile Steal

The parents of a twoyear-old girl who was found with cocaine in her blood after being examined at Alicante General Hospital, have been arrested by the National Police. The couple, aged 38 and 40 years, were bailed, with youngster taken to hospital after she suffered seizures. Authorities then alerted police to what had hap-

pened after the blood analysis. A susbequent home search (pictured) found traces of drugs, with the theory that the youngsters might have tried some herself. The couple were bailed after appearing before a judge, but the child has been brought the protection of authorities.

Two indoor marijuana farms have been shut down in separate operations carried out by the National Police in Elche and Orihuela. 277 marijuana plants were found at an Orihuela address with a 49-year-old Spaniard charged with public health offences and illegally using electricity. The Elche operation uncovered 27 kilos of marijuana ready to be packaged up, plus equipment for their cultivation. Four people of Croatian and Serbian nationality were arrested.

After six years of waiting, the La Marina Camping and Resort site has finally been given the Valencian Government´s approval for a major expansion. The size of the complex

will go up 30 thousand square metres to 100 thousand square metres, which will mean the creation of around 200 plots, work on which will start after the summer season.

A Romanian couple, aged in their early thirties, have been arrested in Orihuela and charged with stealing top-of-the-range mobile phones in the area, as well as a similar offence in Madrid. The National Police said that victims were targeted by the couple who spotted them in the street with a phone and then follow their “marks”, who were often elderly, into a shop. The female thief would then engage them in conversation before snatching the phone, and making a quick dash into the street, with her accomplice waiting to speed them away in a car.

Dramatic Rescue

Alicante City firefighters rescued a five-year-old girl last week, after she ended up to the window ledge of her seventh floor flat after being left home alone. The child had been left sleeping alone in the flat when her mother “popped out” to pay her gym fees. The girl climbed out of a window after waking up in the flat, after feeling scared that she was on her own. She was spotted balancing on a narrow ledge by people in the Plaza de los Luceros, who immediately called emergency services. A

fire engine quickly arrived at the apartment block, and two fire-fighters were raised in a rescue basket to save the youngster. The 27-year-old mother subsequently appeared in a front of a judge, on a charge of abandoning a child. She admitted to having left the child alone for at least 40 minutes, after she left her home to sort out her gym membership. The judge decided that she should continue to be the guardian of the girl, even though legal proceedings were continuing.

Falling Trend

The number of unemployed people in Spain fell by just over nine thousand to three point seven million in February, according to official government figures. Overall, the number of people out of work has gone down by over 402

thousand over 12 months. On a month-to-month basis, the Murcia region’s total of 117 thousand people unemployed showed little change, but over a year, the overall figure has gone down by nearly 10 percent.

In Alicante Province, February’s figures showed a rise of just over a thousand in a total of just under 170 thousand, but like in Murcia and across Spain, the numbers were down over a year, with a fall of over eight percent.

Terror Persuasion

Caterpillars Cleared Torrevieja’s Municipal Theatre could be reopened in a few weeks time, having been closed for the last 18 months over safety concerns. Work has eventually started inside the building, with mayor José Manuel Dolón saying that project will allow a safety license and appropriate certification to be granted by the Valencian Government. In September 2016, the council closed the theatre stating that basic licensing and safety work needed to be carried out, which it claimed the previous Partido Popular administration failed to do. The authority said the theatre was opened eleven years ago without any final completion certification.

Very Drunk A lorry driver who was ten times over the drink-drive limit was arrested on Saturday evening, after his vehicle wobbled across two lanes of the A-30 motorway in Murcia. The 60-year-old Portuguese driver was ferrying vegetables from Torre Pacheco to Burgos in northern Spain, as worried motorists called the authorities fearing a collision. Two Guardia Civil patrol cars chased him for a few kilometres and managed to stop him in the Cieza area, with the subsequent breath test showing him to be well over the limit.

Processionary caterpillar nests are being removed across the Orihuela municipality, with most of the nests being found on the Orihuela Costa. The Courier has previously published details of both

the harm that caterpillars can do to pets and to young children, and their good, with Orihuela’s environment councillor, Miguel Ángel Fernández saying that the work is being carried out by the CTL company.

Polluters Cut

A Torrevieja-based terror suspect linked to terror attacks in Brussels and Paris, tried to persuade a young Muslim woman living in Catalunya to commit attacks in the area, according to transcripts obtained by the El Periodico newspaper. Abdeljail Aït El-Kaïd, a Moroccan who lived in Torrevieja, left the area in 2014 to join the so-called Islamic State in Raqqa,

Syria, the capital of the terrorist organisation's self-proclaimed caliphate, for combat training. During his week-long stay in the Middle Eastern country, he met Abdelhamid Abaaoud, who organised the multiple massacre in Paris in the autumn of 2015. El-Kaïd was arrested in the Polish capital of Warsaw in June 2015 en-route back to Spain, after information was

passed on by the Guardia Civil to their Polish counterparts. In the conversation between them in June 2015, El-Kaïd urged the young woman to "kill the infidels in Europe as they are killing the Muslims over there here", to which she replies: "Here it is impossible". He made it clear that he had no problem in getting weapons for her.

Santiago Parade

Barcelona is to ban cars that are older than 20 years from the area’s roads on a weekday to try to slash air pollution by 30 percent. The measure will start in January 2019 and will cover Barcelona and the 39 surrounding municipalities. The law means that it will be illegal to drive private cars reg-

istered before January 1997 and vans registered before October 1994 on working days. Although the ban does not come into force for two years, those vehicles will already be banned from the roads during periods of high pollution from December this year.

Over 50 groups and organisations took part in Sunday's grand parade, which was the final event of the Santiago de la Ribera

carnival. The 29th staging of the event had began the previous weekend with the crowning of the carnival queen.

The usual quota of colourful floats took a route from the Barnuevo esplanade finishing off at the local police headquarters.

Everybody Out The police have arrested a man suspected of being part of a large group of people who ate thousands of euro worth of food at two restaurants before fleeing without paying the bill. The man was detained on Monday in the northwestern city of Ponferrada and police are looking for a second suspect. An investigation was launched after a group of over 100 people, purporting to celebrate a baptism, enjoyed a two thousand euro banquet on February 27th at the Hotel Carmen restaurant in Bembibre, northern Spain, before promptly doing a runner. The Romanian diners, who had paid a deposit of 900 euro left the El Carmen restaurant in Bembibre as dessert was

Sporty Area

Sports tourism is set to bring in 279 million euro into the Murcia region this year, according to the regional government’s tourism department, with the main focus being in the San Pedro del Pinatar and San Javier municipalities. A special presentation this week at the Pinatar Arena, led by tourist minister Juan Hernandez, revealed that his department expects 171 thousand sports-related visitors this year, a rise of over eight per cent on last year. Soccer teams and golf players are leading the charge in using local facilities and staying in accommodation.

due to be served, owner Antonio Rodriguez said. "It happened in the space of a minute," he said. "It was something they had planned and they left in a stampede. The diners owe me two thousand more euro”. The diners had consumed starters, a main course and 30 bottles of various alcoholic drinks, adding that it was the first time in 35 years of working in the restaurant trade that

he had ever come across such an incident. It later emerged that another restaurant about 10 kilometres away in Ponferrada was also the scene of a similar heist in mid-February by a group of around 200 people. They were allegedly celebrating a wedding, when they also fled without paying a bill of some 10 to 12 thousand euro. The authorities believe the two cases are linked.

Murcia Showdown Murcia’s underfire Partido Popular President, , Pedro Antonio Sánchez (pictured left), could be forced out of office after the Ciudadanos party pulled out of their coalition with the PP. Antonio Sánchez is currently being investigated by the National Court over corruption claims under Operation Punica, and had to answer questions from a judge on Monday over the use of public finances for an auditorium in Puerto Lumbreras when he was mayor there. The PP can now only command 22 votes in the 45-strong Murcia Assembly chamber, with the President refusing to resign after meeting with Ciudadnos leader Miguel Sánchez (pictured right). Ciudadanos pulled the plug on their arrangement, leading to speculation that they could combine with the other non-PP parties to force out Antonio Sánchez by calling a vote of no confi-

dence. The Ciudadanos leader held talks with his PSOE/Socialist counterpart Rafael González Tovar on Wednesday over ways to form an alternative government. Meanwhile around four thousand people gathered in Murcia City on Sunday in a call for Antonio Sánchez to quit. They marched down the Gran Vía as far as the San Esteban Palace, home to the regional government, where the organisers read a manifesto condemning corruption.

Hit And Run

A 42-year-old cyclist suffered a broken rib and facial injuries after he was knocked off his bike by a car in the Guardamar area last Thursday. The incident happened at around 1.30 pm on the camino route between Quesada and Guardamar, with the motorist fleeing the scene. The Guardia Civil has launched a search for the driver, including using social networks, whilst the injured 42-year-old man from Elche, was treated at Elche's Vinalopó hospital.

San Javier’s Dos Mares shopping centre says that last month’s opening of the Carrefour hypermarket has had a major impact on the

number of shoppers. The centre claims that visitor numbers to the site have risen by 40 percent compared to previous months.

The raid took place last Saturday with the police saying the arrested members include two of the group's leaders. Building Up As construction ramps up on a secure new boundary wall funded entirely by donors, the Rojales-based Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre is still after further donations to build the wall higher in a bid to better protect equines from winter winds and summer sun. Co-founders Sue and Rod Weeding are hoping to raise a further seven thousand euros to fund the extra height, which they say would improve the lives of dozens of their rescued equines.

The Big Tuba JB Brass have signed up some new members over the winter, and even an BBb Bass tuba that was bought via an internet auction, as they get ready for their first concert of the year. A top class bass player from Norway joined the band, and that meant he needed an instrument, which was bought after some bidding on E-Bay, with money raised throughout the year, as well as a generous donation from Avalon Funeral Plans. Mike Thornton (pictured) said 'It's not brand new but it's new to me. We'd have to sell a lot more raffle tickets to raise the four thousand euro for a brand new Bass!' Despite new members

Said Sue: “Making the wall higher will give our horses shelter from the cold north winds in winter and, in the future, allow us

to create very sturdy and large field shelters for extra sun and rain protection, using the boundary fence as the back wall.”

Almost 600 euro was raised at a recent charity lunch in aid of the Huntington's Disease Association, which was held at Restaurante Giovanni's in Almoradi. The event was organised for the second year running by Margaret Tozer, whose brother-in-law, David suffers from HD, and moved to Spain in the hope that the warmer climate and relaxed way of

life would help with his condition. Huntington's Disease is a hereditary terminal illness affecting both men and women which destroys the pathways between the brain and the rest of the body, resulting in uncontrollable movements, loss of speech, incontinence, and loss of memory function, to name but a few symptoms. It also causes changes

of personality and depression. More fundraising events are planned in the Almoradi area including a traditional afternoon tea on Tuesday March 21st and a fun quiz on Saturday April 22nd, both to be staged at Cafe-Bar Almoradi, located on Calle Mayor 91 in the town. God made a dog, because he wanted to give us humans a friend for life. A friend that would be genuinely happy to see us, each and every day. A friend that would wag their tail in sheer delight, just because we looked at them. A friend that would ask for nothing in return. God made a dog, because when we were hurt or feeling down, he knew we would be grateful for their big adoring eyes and their paw on us, telling us it will all be alright. He knew that a dog has a special way of connecting with us through silent energy, not by ranting on or lecturing but by just being, just being there. God made a dog to defend us against criminals and to sniff out dangerous things that could hurt us, like bombs and to smell things that can make us very sick like cancer. In doing these duties, they keep us safe and alive. God made dogs to teach us humans what unconditional love is really all about. He knew we would need to be taught how to love someone, even though they may have hurt us in the past. A dog will always give you another chance, and will show instant forgiveness.

which is living in the past or the future, so he made a dog to remind us of the wonders of living right here in this moment. To notice the butterfly or leaves floating in the beautiful sky, rather than being wrapped up in constant thought. God made dogs to remind us to switch our minds off and give ourselves the relaxation time we need to become more pleasant human beings for our family and all people we come into contact with. He knew that a mind that is constantly racing at 150 miles per hour can become angry and destructive. God made dogs, because he wanted us all to appreciate every moment in life. A dog shows you their huge delight at the prospect of simply going for a walk with you. Not because you are going to buy them anything, they are happy just because they are going to be by your side, which is where they always want to be. God made a dog because he wanted to teach us true friendship. He wanted us to learn how to be there for one another through good times and bad. How to never judge each other or gossip about one another. And because of this, God made a dog to teach us loyalty, which is one of their greatest gifts to us. God made a dog, so we would love, honour and cherish them. He also gave us the dog, so we would come to realize their intelligence and to give them the respect they deserve.

Most importantly, God made a dog because he knew that we would all need a Guardian Angel. Someone to constantly love, guide and protect us. God made a dog and thank God he did.

TOBY Toby was found by the side of a main road when he was six weeks old, but now at nearly three months old, he has been nursed to become a health and happy dog. He has had the relevant puppy vaccinations and is ready for adoption. He will be medium sized when he is older. Pills Seized A 29-year-old Belgian man has been arrested in Daya Nueva and accused of smuggling and public health offences, after a stash of unlicensed medicines was intercepted over a period of time at Alicante-Elche airport. 21 thousand pills, said to be worth 210 thousand euro, had been seized during the Guardia Civil operations, with two men in San Vicente del Raspeig and Alicante City also being arrested. Most of the drugs, many of which were for erectile dysfunction, were being shipped in from India with serious doubts about the quality of the pills which

were set to be sold cheaply across Alicante Province. None of the tablets were European Union approved. The Guardia rumbled that something was going on

towards the end of last year with regular parcels coming in from India addressed to locations in Los Montesinos and Daya Neuva, as well as San Vicente and Alicante.

Secret Stash The Guardia Civil have uncovered a large amount of explosives in northern Spain which they suspect belong to the Basque separatist group ETA. The Guardia discovered seven drums of explosives in a rural area near the town of Irun on the border with France. ETA waged a violent decades-long campaign for an independent Basque homeland in northern Spain and south-western France, and is blamed for the deaths of more than 800

people. The group has been weakened over the years as hundreds of its members were arrested and some of

its weapons were seized. It declared a ceasefire in October 2011 but has refused to give up its weapons.

Cleaner Drinks Several parts of Formentera de Segura should have an improved drinking water supply thanks to work carried out by the Hidraqua water company. The 82 thousand euro project for the Vega Baja town was funded by the local council and Alicante Provincial Council. New pipes and other work was done in the areas of Calles Juan XXIII, San Roque and La PurĂsima. Formentera mayor Francisco Cano, along with council and Hidraqua officials checked up on the upgrades on Wednesday,

with the project having start-

ed last autumn.

Buying medications online 'can put health at risk' People should be wary of buying medications on the internet after an investigation found "widespread failings" at some online providers, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has said. The watchdog inspected 11 internet prescription services in England, finding some "potentially presenting a significant risk to patients". The regulator said while some providers were well-run, others "cut corners". The CQC says it will visit providers and shut any putting patients at risk. It follows a BBC Radio 5 Live investigation into online pharmacies selling antibiotics. The CQC has published reports on urgent inspections of two websites: Treated.com, run by HR Healthcare, and MD Direct, which traded through Assetchemist.co.uk. Prof Steve Field, the CQC's chief inspector of general practice, said there was "little clinical oversight" in the way many websites sold medications. "Some of these websites prescribed unlicensed medicines and - even more worryingly - medicines for diabetes, Parkinson's disease, heart disease and Lithium for bipolar disorder," he told BBC's Radio 5 Live. "Patients can go online, self-diagnose their condition, order their own medicine and obtain a prescription from the online doctor service, with minimal checks," he said. 'Making improvements' The CQC has now published a clear set of standards for online pharmacies, saying they must: verify that patients match their photo ID, such as through a Skype check get a comprehensive and up-to-date medical history ensure patients truly understand what medicines they are being given seek permission to contact a patient's GP Treated.com was the focus of the 5 Live investigation in October. The CQC suspended the website two months later and began an inspection of its operations. Riaz Vali, responsible for Treated.com, told the BBC it was making improvements to its processes and systems. The second provider, MD Direct Ltd, was also inspected in December and voluntarily cancelled its registration. The CQC found both providers demonstrated significant safety and organisational risk to patients, with widespread failure to provide safe care. The main concerns included little to no verification of patients' identities, inadequate prescribing and no assurances that the clinicians working behind the sites had the relevant skills or qualifications for the roles they were performing.

The CQC has published its first guidelines to online providers about how it inspects services in England. How to choose an online service? The CQC offers tips for the public before they click and buy: check that an online doctor service is registered with the CQC or, if an online pharmacy service, with the General Pharmaceutical Council using the EU common logo check on their address and where you can contact them check how must the service will cost check who works there - are they based in the UK or overseas, and are they registered? check you have been given clear information about the medicine prescribed Gerald Heddell, director of inspection, enforcement and standards at the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), said: "Prescription-only medicines are prescription only for a reason and should only be taken under the supervision of a healthcare professional. "We are working closely with colleagues at the Care Quality Commission and the General Pharmaceutical Council to ensure online sellers act responsibly to protect public health. "Anyone selling medicines to the public via a website must be registered with MHRA and display the common logo on every page of the website offering medicines for sale." Charlie Massey, chief executive and registrar of the General Medical Council, which regulates doctors, said he welcomed innovation and supported remote prescribing when it followed the GMC's guidance, but said it was clear not all practitioners were following the guidance. Lord O'Neil, who led the government's review into antimicrobial resistance, said he was very concerned by the sale of antibiotics on websites. "We need to stop treating antibiotics as if they are sweets and we need to be a lot tougher and disciplined about how they are being used," he said.

Coping with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome PTSD is an anxiety disorder that occurs after exposure to a stressful or traumatic experience that resulted in bodily injury or a threat of injury to the body. The traumatic events that may trigger PTSD include personal assault or injury, rape, car accident, abuse, natural or manmade disasters including wars, as well as involvement in military combat. Post-Traumatic Stress is the body’s way of protecting itself from the terrors of the experience by causing dissociation from the previous experience. PTSD can occur at any child, even in childhood. Women are more likely to develop PTSD than men, and there’s also evidence that it runs in the family. Research shows that PTSD is associated with brain changes, and MRI and scan images pick up changes to the memory sections of the brain. Scientists have described PTSD as an environmental assault that changes the brain. People with brain abnormalities that affect the body’s ability to cope with stress are more severely affected and are more prone to PTSD. Depression, Psychosis and anxiety disorder all predispose to PTSD. Post-Traumatic Stress creates a set of conscious and unconscious behaviours associated with dealing with the memories of the catastrophe or stressors. These behaviours give rise to the typical symptoms of PTSD which include

Repeated and intrusive memories of the event A vivid sense that the event is occurring again, also called flashbacks Nightmares of the event Negative emotions about the event such as guilt and shame Feelings of distress when reminded of the event Exaggerated physical and emotional reactions to reminders of the event Loss of interest in Life Feeling hopeless about the future Insomnia Anxiety

Complex PTSD is a term that is used to describe a prolonged exposure to a traumatic event such as abuse in childhood, and researchers find that such stress will cause changes to the nervous and hormonal system causing problems with learning, memory and emotional control. These changes may later result in other personality and behavioural problems including aggression, depression, alcohol and drug addiction. The most important aspect in managing PTSD is to recognise the problem and have an understanding and empathy towards the sufferer from the family members. Human beings are more affected positively and negatively by people they love than outsiders. A lack of understanding of the problem by family members will mitigate the most well intentioned therapy used. With the help of psychotherapists, the person can be encouraged to talk about the situation if this is deemed useful, and normally talking about such problems is very helpful. There are usually underlying health problems such as hormonal and nervous system imbalances that will also worsen the problem. Identifying and treating such problems is helpful. People with PTSD are usually unable to function well in society, and so their welfare should be considered. For A Full Body Diagnostic Scan Call MedB Diagnostics – 965071745, 966189074

Britain's e-cigarette boom is over, data suggests The number of smokers using e-cigarettes to kick the habit is declining amid fears that they are may be just as unhealthy as tobacco, data shows. Consumer analyst Mintel has found that for the first time since their launch fewer people are using e-cigarettes to quit smoking, with usage among quitters dropping from 69pc to 62pc last year. It follows a number of recent medical studies which have warned that "vaping" could be as bad for the heart as smoking cigarettes. Mintel found the use of non-prescription nicotine replacement therapy products is stable at 15pc, as is the use of nicotine replacement gums or patches on prescription from health professionals at 14pc. Today less than a third (30pc) of Brits smoke regular ciga-

rettes, down from 33pc in 2014. Mintel senior beauty and personal care analyst Roshida Khanom said: "The lack of licensed products positioned as smoking cessation methods is hampering the e-cigarette sector and, as a result, we are not seeing as many new users enter the market. "Our research shows that the majority of consumers don't know how e-cigarettes work and that they would like to see more NHS regulation. "Those who are using e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation method are doing so with little in the way of official guidance, whether from the market or the NHS." More than half of Britons (53pc) think e-cigarettes should be regulated by the NHS, the report said, while 57pc are concerned there is not enough information available on how the devices work. Mintel's report follows US surgeon general Vivek Murthy issuing a stark warning over the risks of e-cigarettes in December, putting

him at odds with UK public health officials. Dr Murthy said e-cigarette use among young people and young adults "is not safe" and is "now a major public health concern" as their brands were more vulnerable to the negative consequences of nicotine - the key ingredient in e-cigarettes. His view contrasts significantly with a report from Public Health England (PHE) which said "best estimates show ecigarettes are 95pc less harmful to health than normal cigarettes, and when supported by a smoking cessation service, help most smokers to quit tobacco altogether". The Mintel report said 30pc of Britons currently smoke regular cigarettes, compared to 33pc in 2014. Younger people aged 25 to 34 are significantly more likely to smoke than those aged over 55, at 47pc compared with 18pc. Some 42pc of smokers intend to quit in the future, but just over one quarter (27pc) have no interest in quitting whatsoever, the report said. Mintel surveyed 879 adult internet users who are currently trying to quit or have quit smoking in October.

New smile in a day: veneers solution Dental veneers are ultrathin, translucent pieces of composite resin material or porcelain (ceramic) shells, which are affixed permanently to the front of the teeth in order to create instant perfection. Typically, veneers are placed on the front of the teeth to brighten the teeth, mask discolorations, whiten teeth, and improve smiles. Modern technology has made dental veneers more lifelike, convenient, stronger, and to reflect light in a similar fashion as the natural dental enamel. What Materials Are Dental Veneers Made Of? There are two predominant materials used for making dental veneers: composite resin and porcelain. Porcelain veneers and composite veneers are an inexpensive and minimally invasive way of restoring and correcting small cracks, chips and teeth discolouration. How Do Veneers Work?

3. The veneers enhance confidence, self-assurance and happiness more than the alternative treatments. 4. Not require extensive shaping procedures. 5. Veneers are very versatile and can be used to cover a range of imperfections such as discolouration, chipped teeth or gaps. “The dental care at Sdent is wonderful, not only do I feel like my teeth are in good hands I also feel like I can trust the people who work there, if you need dental care these are the people to see.” Mr. Collins “I would recommend anyone to be a patient at Sdent! we have made several trips to this office and each visit we have been treated with the most uprespect anyone can show us!!” Mrs. Scott “All the staff including Summer has been great to me and my family! i want to thank Sdent Dental Clinic for all the good work they have done with us.” Davis´s family

Dental veneers are very thin and fixed in place by a special strong bond that requires very minimal preparation of the teeth. Additionally, they make the teeth to appear natural and healthy. Veneers help to enhance the shape, colour and position of the teeth. When a single tooth is out of position, the veneer can often be fitted to bring the tooth into line with the rest.

Costa Walks – The Sierra de Orihuela

The Sierra de Orihuela is a 15km stretch of mountains located north of the town of Orihuela in the Alicante province. It extends west to the municipal district of Santomera, which is situated in the adjacent autonomous community of Murcia. At its summit, the Sierra de Orihuela reaches a height of 633m at the Leja de Millamón in the Peña de Orihuela section, and to the east, the mountain peaks at the Cruz de la Muela with a height of 464m. From the top of the Sierra de Orihuela, the views of the flat plains and ‘huertas’ of the Vega Baja are absolutely stunning. The mountain range offers a drastic contrast to the area of the town below that spreads out at only 22m above sea level at the mountain’s feet. The Sierra de Orihuela is an area of natural beauty that is home to a huge variety of animal and plant wildlife. Due to its close proximity to the sea; the type of rock; and orientation of the range, the sierra provides the perfect location for the great number of varied ecosystems that have flourished and thrived there. On the climb up to the peaks, expect to see dense areas of small trees, bushes, brushwood, and grassland populated with herbs such as thyme, rosemary, and fennel, as well as the occasional exotic-looking plants and flowers. Due to the richness of the vegetation, many types of birds, reptiles, and mammals also dwell in this area. Higher up towards the top, in the lonely rocky regions, it is not uncommon to find various birds of prey that have made the area their home. Several species of owl have been spotted as well as the Bonelli’s eagle, kestrels, and the peregrine falcon. Smaller birds that nest in the zone are the great grey shrike, goldfinch, blue rock thrush, and on the odd occasion, the green woodpecker, hoopoe, and the European bee-eater may even be seen. Signs for walkers and route markings have been put in place so that visitors can follow the most easy and accessible route to the two summits of the range, however other paths or tracks may be taken. Construction of the walkways began in 1948 and was finished by 1950 and the pathways are now used by the many people that enjoy hiking up the mountain or just spending time in nature. This is an excellent area for aficionados of walking, trekking, painting, photography and writing, for example. Walks in the Sierra de Orihuela can vary in length. It is possible to spend a few hours, half a day, or even a whole weekend (if you take your tent). For a fairly strenuous 3-hour hike, where a moderate to good level of fitness is required, take the following directions to the starting point of the walk:

Take the old road to Murcia (N340) from the major roundabout on the outskirts of Orihuela town centre, near the Ociopia shopping centre. The road immediately narrows and climbs a steep hill. After a few minutes, on descending the hill, you will see a restaurant on the left-hand side of the road called ‘El Piste’. At this point, turn right immediately. You will turn into a very narrow pathway but there is a sign for the Leja de Millamón and the Sierra de Orihuela and it shows the location as N340 km 685. Follow the road and at the fork take the left path. Continue until you find a space to park your car. You should now be at the bottom of the Peña de Orihuela. There is a short walk through the tree and grassland area that very quickly leads to the foot of the mountain. From here

onwards, the climb is quite steep and precarious in some parts. You will have to climb rocks for about 10 minutes of this section and you will have to pass through the curious ‘Paso del Gato’, a 2-metre hole in the mountain that must be navigated in order to continue the walk. The journey to the Leja de Millamón consists of a steep climb upwards for around 45 minutes, at a fairly fast pace, which then leads to a fairly relaxing walk along the ridge before another hard-going climb to the summit. The descent can be hazardous, especially with the wrong type of footwear. Ensure that you take plenty of water – as you will need it – and wear the correct trainers with a strong grip or preferably walking boots, as well as sun protection, if the weather is sunny. Try to carry out the climb in the morning or late afternoon or evening, depending on the time of year.

La Zarza and Cañada del Trigo Courier reader Robert W Barnes sent us his report about a location he describes as “something a bit different”, but as the area sounds fascinating, we thought we would share it with you. If you would like to submit a similar article about your favourite place, with a couple of pictures, feel free to send it to admin@tko.media and we will see if we can share your favourite place too. The sleepy hamlets of La Zarza and Cañada del Trigo, in the shadow of the Sierra de Quibas, located between Murcia City and Pinoso, became the centre of attraction just recently, when a rather special and significant statue was unveiled. Local sculpture Jose Antonio Saez, when paying a recent visit to the Olive Tree Guest House, enquired of owner Jennifer Lock, was she aware that the boundary between the regions of Jumilla and Abanilla, ran at the bottom of the track to her guest house, and perhaps a monument / boundary marker, would be in order, and more importantly, Jose would be delighted to do the work, in return for a Sunday lunch or three and glass of sparkling water now and again! Within a few weeks the stone plinth had been completed. Jose thought that as St. Peter, held the keys to gates of heaven, it was right that his favourite saint, should grace the top. The completed statue is in the Romanico style, which was a common marker of land around Madrid, and the north of Spain, but rarely seen here in southern regions. Chica Arancha, Pedanea of the Zone Local, undertook the unveiling, explaining that traditional crafts and craftsmen are still in the area, and ways should be found to preserve and encourage them. Let us hope that this such maker, is the first of many.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

There haven’t been that many big films that have translated well to TV shows over the decades, with two crackers immediately springing to mind with M*A*S*H, and much more recently Fargo. So it was with some concern that I tuned into Fox TV’s Lethal Weapon which premiered on ITV last Friday, as the films are so inconic and entertaining with charismatic leads Mel Gibson and Danny Glover playing detectives Riggs and Murtagh . Inevitably I spent most of the hour comparing Clayne Crawford and Damon Wayons to Gibson and Glover, and I have to say that I got used to them in a perfect Friday night rollercoaster of fun and action. Crawford is the stronger performer doing a great job as Riggs, and we even had his iconic beach caravan back in business. I thought Wayons was’nt as “in your face” as Danny Glover was, and I missed that element, but that aside, there wasn’t a great deal wrong in essentially another US crime procedural that makes for an

Weapon Discharged

entertaining start to the weekend. There’s nothing vastly original scriptwise about it, and if you want the best cop “buddy” show ever, then dust down some old Starsky and Hutch videos, but Lethal Weapon is perfectly fine. Why ITV are running it almost the same slot 24 hours later is a mystery to me, unless they are trying to recoup the large fee that they paid for the show, but Lethal Weapon is going to be around for a few seasons, and they have themselves a US hit that they will be delighted with. Watching Benidorm on ITV is like meeting up with old friends, and though it does not have the sharpness of the first few years, it’s still fun to see what is going on in and around the Solana hotel, and the various guest stars that pop up, like Nigel Havers last week as the dentist wanting some gold teeth back so that he could flog them off. I like the bromance between hairdressers Kenneth and Liam, but though amusing, the Payne family don’t hold a

candle to the original Garveys. Lynda La Plante called it quits on Prime Suspect 1973 citing creative differences, or perhaps she simply didn’t rate what ITV was doing with her material on the early career of Jane Tennison. The main problem for me is that 1973 retro cops were done brilliantly a decade ago in Life on Mars, and whilst Stefanie Martini does a good job as Tennison, the script just

does not do justice to one of the great UK TV coppers. This is a real missed opportunity. John Bishop has been miles better this week as host of ITV’s Nightly Show compared to David Walliams, as he looks in control and knows how to interview. The problem is still the “forced” unfunny skits and the whole thing looking as it was thrown together at the last minute (which it probably is).

For great laughs and cringe moments (for the right reason), check out the third season of Channel Four’s Catastrophe on a Tuesday night. Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney are great performers and writers who deliver the goods for them and the rest of the cast, as the barbs come thick and fast in a comedy delight. As a massive fan of Keifer Sutherland’s 24, I was very worried that the Keifer-less

24:Legacy (airing on FOX UK) might no work, but don’t lose any sleep over it. It’s a fun-filled ride of all the usual 24 gimmicks of violence and twists, with Corey Hawkins playing an ex-US soldier who is left fighting a bunch of terrorists wanting to do nasty things on American soil. Nothing new there, but it works, though US audiences, clearing missing Sutherland, have not been so impressed.

Ireland kept alive their chances of winning the title with a hard-fought victory against France in their last match, while Wales have little more than pride to play for having lost to Scotland and England already during this campaign. The sides shared the spoils in a 16-16 draw when they met at the Aviva Stadium last year, with Wales staging an impressive fightback after Ireland had raced into a 13-0 lead after 28 minutes. Ireland have an excellent record in the Welsh capital, and have won seven of the last 10 encounters dating back to 2001, including a 35-21 victory here in August 2015 when both teams were preparing for the Rugby World Cup. BBC secures rights to FIFA Women's World Cup 2019 The BBC’s latest rights acquisition will see them capture all the drama and excitement of the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 - broadcasting extensive coverage of every game across TV, radio and online. Taking place on International Women’s Day, today’s announcement follows on from the huge success of the BBC’s coverage of the 2015 tournament in Canada, which saw England’s Lionesses reach the semi-finals. With an impressive peak TV audience of 2.4 million late into the night for England’s game against Japan, the tournament reached more than 12 million people on TV alone, unprecedented figures for women’s football in the UK. The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019 adds to the BBC’s impressive commitment to women’s football, which includes regular programming across our TV, radio and digital services. This year BBC audiences will have access to continued women’s football TV coverage with the Women’s Football Show on BBC Two bringing highlights of the all new WSL Spring Series from April and the WSL season from September. On BBC Radio 5 live and 5 live sports extra there will be live commentaries from the WSL Spring Series and the new WSL season while the Women’s FA Cup Final will also be live across BBC TV and radio in May in a deal that runs up to and including 2021. Fans will also be able to watch live selected qualification matches later in the year, following the home nations in their quest to appear on the world stage at France 2019. Director of BBC Sport Barbara Slater says: “We’re delighted that the BBC will bring the biggest tournament in women's football to the widest possible audience. Women's football has grown significantly over the last few years and we are proud of the contribution we have made. France 2019 promises to be another fantastic showcase for the sport." FIFA’s Secretary General Fatma Samoura says: “The seventh edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2015 reached recordbreaking numbers of TV viewers and social media clicks, underlining global interest in the world’s biggest single-sport event for women. As excitement grows around the eighth edition of the competition, we are delighted to work with the BBC to broadcast the ultimate event in women’s football to even greater audiences in the UK via the BBC’s TV, radio and digital platforms.”

Geri’s 90s - My Drive To Freedom

Robot Wars

Saturday - BBC Two Multi-award winning singer Geri Horner is set to take BBC Two viewers back to the 90s for the next instalment in the BBC Music: My Generation season. Following in the footsteps of Tom Jones, Keith Richards, Boy George and Soul II Soul frontman Jazzie B, Geri’s 90s - My Drive To Freedom will see the former Spice Girl reflect on her own incredible journey, from turning 18 as a working class girl in Watford at the dawn of the decade through to international fame and fortune with the Spice Girls, followed by great success as a solo artist at the end of the 1990s. Along the way she worked as a TV presenter, joined a girl band, enjoyed a close friendship with her pop idol pin-up George Michael and became the iconic face of Cool Britannia as Ginger Spice in her famous Union Jack dress. Set against a backdrop of key political, social and cultural moments - the release of Nelson Mandela and the fall of the Berlin Wall, the end of Margaret Thatcher and the election of New Labour, the tragic death of Princess Diana which united the nation in mourning, the launch of the World Wide Web, Geri’s 90s - My Drive To Freedom focuses on the great moments in pop culture in the decade leading up to the new Millennium, including the rave scene, boy bands, Brit Pop and Girl Power. The documentary will feature interviews with some of Geri's friends and family plus many central personalities from the decade.

Six Nations: Wales v Ireland Friday - BBC One John Inverdale introduces live coverage as Wales host Ireland in the 2017 Six Nations at the Principality stadium in Cardiff. Ireland’s dreams of a grand slam were ruined by defeat in the opening match against Scotland, but can the men in green retain hope of a third title in four years at the expense of their hosts? It was an attritional 16-16 draw between the two sides in 2016, but with Wales attempting to improve their attacking game under coach Rob Howley, and bonus points on offer in this year’s championship, there could be plenty of tries this time around. Studio guests include Keith Wood, Martyn Williams and Jeremy Guscott. Commentary comes from Eddie Butler, Jonathan Davies and Paul O’Connell.

Sunday - BBC Two Dara Ó Briain, Angela Scanlon and commentator Jonathan Pearce oversee the ultimate robot fighting competition. This series the challenge for competitors is even tougher, as those infamous House Robots have been let off the leash in a new twist - Rogue House Robot. This is the second heat, and only one of the eight teams can go through to the series grand final. Robots in this heat are Cherub, PP3D, Draven, Push To Exit, Hobgoblin, Behemoth, Cobra and Eruption. Each heat begins with two group battles, the four top teams go into a mini-league. Points are awarded to competitors based on control, damage and aggression with maximum points awarded to competitors who incapacitate their adversary. The battles are all overseen by judges Professor Noel Sharkey, Professor Sethu Vijayakumar and Dr Lucy Rogers. During their fights teams must try to dodge the arena hazards… The Pit, The Spikes, The Flipper and Fire. They also have the four House Robots to deal with; Matilda, Dead Metal, Sir Killalot and Shunt. This series there’s a menacing new twist. Hitting the Arena Tyre no longer automatically lowers The Pit. It can also activate a mode called Rogue House Robot. This releases a House Robot to attack the competitors for a period of ten seconds, anywhere in the arena. Let battle commence!

RICHARD CAVENDER

BlueMoon Solutions www.bluemoonsolutions.es

BlueMoon Solutions is the computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca. BlueMoon Solutions comes to you at home or at work. Their personal service covers from Alicante to Pilar de la Horadada.

Richard moved to Spain ten years ago having left his management background behind in the UK and decided to use his IT skills to help home users and small businesses with their PC problems. Now a relaxed 'computer man' he is out and about in the Spanish sun every day, making house and shop calls and using his vast experience and qualifications to sort out the problem there and then. Computers are his hobby as well as his work so don’t be surprised to get an answer to your email in the early hours!

ADVICE: Glenys wanted to know whether there were any downsides TIP: John wanted to know how to get rid of the Ask.Com toolbar and to using fibre optic Internet settings

Q

Hi Richard, bit cheeky but as we are so not up-to-date with internet stuff can I just ask if there are any disadvantages of having the fibre optic system installed? We have the cabling now on Lo Crispin. They are offering free installation to the house and a free month’s trial, 50mb sounds a lot better than the barely 5 we get now. Would appreciate any comments. Kind regards Glenys

A

Hi Glenys, not that I can think of, its generally much faster than conventional ADSL or microwave Internet and is also usually cheaper. Unlike the UK many fibre providers here put the fibre right into the house into a special router, the only real downside that I can think of is that the fibre cable is very thin and could easily be broken so it’s probably worth thinking about the location of the router to give it maximum protection from accidental damage.

Q

Richard, good morning, I have been evaded by www.search.ask.com (Ask.com)on both Google Chrome and Internet Explorer. I have tried to delete them via Internet Options but what ever I do they always come back when I launch Google Chrome and Internet Explorer. My preference is to have www.google.com for both. Can you please advise me about this problem and how to cure it? John

A

Hi John, the Ask toolbar (and its ilk) tend to be known as PUP (potentially unwanted programs), as they are neither really virus's or malware, but have never the less managed to get themselves installed on your computer surreptitiously. Removal of PUP's is usually a matter of firstly removing them from the add/remove programs section of the control panel and then removing the traces of their actions (usually a home page change) from the browser/s in question. In your case you can set your home page back to www.google.co.uk in Internet Explorer by going into Tools, Internet Options and in Google Chrome by using the wrench or bars icon (top right hand corner) and then using the settings, on start-up section. I hope this helps.

DUCATI RIDING COURSES RECOMMENCE WITH A FOCUS ON SAFETY In 15 years, Ducati have taught over 10,000 motorcyclists from all over the globe. Tried-and-tested teaching methods, prestigious locations and an unrivalled pool of instructors that includes world champions such as Carlos Checa, Troy Bayliss, Marco Lucchinelli, Paolo Casoli and Manuel Poggiali. Not to mention a motorcycle pool with the entire Ducati range, the latest bikes included. All this has made the Ducati Riding Experience (DRE) - the Bologna-based motorcycles manufacturer's riding school - a huge success. And now, starting on 6th May, DRE will be back on road and track with a swathe of exciting new features. Dedicated to a growing range of riders and experience levels, DRE 2017 offers a syllabus that is more effective and meticulously structured than ever. As of this year, DRE courses are sub-divided into three main sections: Safety, dedicated to safe road riding; Racetrack for, of course, race circuits; Enduro, to learn and hone off-road skills. Held at the Automotive Safety Center of Vairano (Pavia), DRE Safety is an

all-new addition to this latest edition of the Ducati Riding Experience. The course aims to provide the tools needed to ensure better road riding, especially from a safety viewpoint. It will take place in a facility designed specifically for this purpose, to which only Ducati has access during the course. The Automotive Safety Center of Vairano is used by major car and motorcycle manufacturers as a developmental test track. Covering over than 50 hectares, it consists of an internal circuit, which can be configured according to requisites and is equipped with all the tools needed to learn or improve safe road riding techniques. This all-new, safetyfocused DRE course is tailor-made according to the participants' level of experience. Level 1 is for riders who already have their license but still have limited road experience or feel they need to boost their on-bike confidence (perhaps after a long hiatus); Level 2 aims to improve riding technique and teach participants how to get the most from electronic systems (an essential, extremely high-tech aspect of Ducati’s current range).

DRE Safety provides participants with an impressive bike pool covering a broad range of performance levels and technical characteristics. They span from the agile, fun-packed Monster 797 to the iconic Monster 1200 S, the new Multistrada 950 and the Multistrada 1200 S. The pool also includes another great new Ducati 2017 bike, the SuperSport and the true “fun bike”, the Hypermotard 939. In addition to ensuring both safety and a uniquely excit-

ing ride experience, each motorcycle features the cutting-edge technology that is the hallmark of every Ducati. DRE was born on the track: it's here that a core element of the “experience” remains thanks to four courses sub-divided by ability and participants’ needs. These range from Track Warm Up, for those who've never ridden on track but are ready to take their “baptism of speed” on the 959 Panigale, to Champs Academy where you'll learn

from champions like Carlos Checa, Michele Pirro and Troy Bayliss on board the Panigale R. In between are Track Evo and Track Master, which let those who already have some experience under their belts to hone their technique to a sharper edge (respectively on the 959 Panigale and 1299 Panigale S . All on an internationally renowned track and aboard the sleekest, highest-performing motorcycles in the Ducati Superbike family.

This year DRE Racetrack takes place on the same circuits MotoGP and Superbike champions do battle: Mugello and Misano. Registration for the DRE Safety and DRE Racetrack courses are now open. To register go to www.dre.ducati.com Sign ups for the 2017 edition of DRE Enduro, Ducati's off-road riding school, available at www.dreenduro.ducati.com. DRE Enduro is hosted on the magnificent grounds of the Castello di Nipozzano, in Tuscany, in the heart of Chianti Rùfina country. Riding the Multistrada 1200 Enduro, course participants will get to grips with the offroad environment and learn the required techniques from experienced professional instructors, headed by ParisDakar veteran Beppe Gualini, DRE Enduro's technical director. Designed to cater all skill levels, the course offers an excellent opportunity to experience the outstanding versatility of the Multistrada 1200 Enduro and the new Multistrada 950, all in complete safety thanks to attentive supervision by highly qualified riders and instructors.

Rahm’s Ryder Boost Spain’s new golf star Jon Rahm has nailed his colours to the mast by saying that he wants to play for Europe in next year's Ryder Cup. Rahm has joined the European Tour as an affiliate member for the remainder of the season, which makes him eligible to earn Ryder Cup points when qualifying for Thomas Bjorn's team begins at the Czech Masters on August 31st. The Spaniard shot to prominence with his stunning victory at the Farmers Insurance Open earlier this year, when he holed a monster 60-foot putt for eagle on the final hole to secure his maiden PGA Tour title in fine style. Rahm, 22, is currently ranked 38th in the world and he is looking forward to playing on both main Tours as he chases a Ryder Cup debut in Paris. "It means a lot to me to join the European Tour - I'm European after all," said Rahm, who enjoyed an encouraging rookie season on the PGA Tour last year as he finished in the top 25 six times from nine starts. "I have always wanted to play the Ryder Cup and I have always wanted to be a member of the European Tour. "I have obviously taken a different approach to tour life than a lot of other Europeans who went to college in the States, but I thought this was my best shot. I'm surprised I have been able to take this opportunity so early but it's great to be able to join.” "I have so many memories of the European Tour - one that stands out was watching Justin Rose's hole-in-one on the third hole at the Volvo Masters the

year he won the Order of Merit at Valderrama. "I remember Miguel Angel Jimenez winning the French Open; Pablo Larrazabal winning the French Open and then Pablo and Sergio's play-off at the BMW International too. I'm really looking forward to playing some tournaments on the European Tour." Rahm is still in the first year of his professional career, but has already been recognised by Phil Mickelson as one of the “best players in the world”. “Jon’s more than just a good young player”, said Mickelson. “I think he’s one of the top players in the world,” he added. “He just doesn’t have weaknesses. Every part of his game is a strength.” Rahm cites Phil Mickelson as one of his mentors, along with Sergio García. But there is another Spaniard who drives him on. Rahm only met Seve Ballesteros once and was too young to remember, but his memory remains strong motivation. “I think Josée María (Olazábal), Sergio, Miguel (Ángel Jiménez) and the others have all been great thanks to the reference of Severiano, and having someone not only from Spanish golf but from world golf making it easier to us to reach where we have,” Rahm said. ‘I think that it’s a little bit of the Spanish character, the arrogance, which helps us play as we play. And I think we have a lot of great examples of great players, and we can see that we can get there.”

Ladies Clash Feeder Talks

The San Javier Squalos ground hosted last weekend’s women’s match in the Murcia FERRMUR Rugby league, as the Torrevieja Tigers (pictured in blue) beat

Tough Experience

Lorca by 67 points to 14. It was another excellent performance by the Tigers side on the back of last month’s victory at Cartagena.

The S. F. Costa Cobras RFC are in talks with an existing local rugby club over become a feeder club for them. The Cobras hope that negotiations will prove to be fruitful, as it will be important for the development of the club, which will allow their mix of Spanish and British players to start playing

friendly matches ahead of the team entering the Valencian league next season. The Cobras train every Monday and Wednesday at the San Fulgencio football ground from 8.30 pm, and are currently looking for more players. Further details from Dutch on 692 767 242.

Some 550 competitors took part in last Sunday’s Spanish National Duathlon championships based around Orihuela City. The athletes faced a stiff test of having to race 16 kilometres on foot, before 66 kilometres of cycling, and rounded off by another eight kilometres on foot for a total of 90 kilometres.

Gustavo Rodríguez won the men’s race in a time of 2:59:32, almost five minutes ahead of second-placed Víctor del Corral, who just inched out Rubén Peñuela. Mavi Garcia took the women’s title in an impressive performance clocking in at 3:20:21, with only 18 of the men finishing in front of her!

Pastor At The Double

No Sunday Cakewalk

CD TORREVIEJA 2 CD BUNOL 0

CD SEGORBE 1 CD ALMORADI 3

Two straight wins, including a priceless victory against Bunol on Sunday, who are the team that Torry are chasing in the first “safe” spot in the third division, means that Torry are now just three points from safety, with another massive match to come in midweek at Muro (report on page 46). A big plus for Torry has been the bonus presence of Alejandro Pastor who planned to leave in January to take up work and football in Australia, but he had problems with his visa. This has proved to be a stroke of luck from Torry’s point of view, as once more the likeable winger popped up with two goals to seal the win and all three points at the Nelson Mandela stadium. March has always promised to be the month that would prove to be crucial for Torry and it got off to a winning start, courtesy of those two Pastor strikes, one in each half. But this was an exquisite team performance with excellence shining through in every department on the back of their win Castellon. However, yet again the main tormentor of the opposition was Lewis Allen, whose constant pressure on the Bunol defence left them weary and wounded. Torry started the game on the front foot with Bunol hardly able

to break out of their own half, as they powered down the flanks through the speed and craft of Pastor and Luis Carlos, or drove through the middle using the deft skills and tenacity of Molina and Lewis. Molina was making his home debut and his guile and endeavour in midfield enamoured himself to fans seeing him for the first time. He debuted in Castellon and was instrumental in the win there as well as this victory against Bunol. Sergio Duran made his debut and he and Dani Salazar were impeccable in the centre of the park, grafting away with a “must win” attitude and showing great creative talent. Jose Carlos was rock steady in goal, keeping his place and pulling off a magnificent second half save when Bunol had their most enterprising period. The back four were unbeatable, Javi Meca shouting out his captain's instructions to willing listeners who never put a foot wrong. Pastor took his eye off the ball for a split second when sent through into the box midway through the first half, forcing him wide and ultimately losing out to the bye line. He made up for it five minutes later in the 36th minute, when he out battled his much bigger

opponent inside the box, twisted him round and made room to drive his shot into the net. It was pure desire, a lot of skill and a joy to behold. Pastor just missed a cross from the left as it skimmed his head and he was proving to be a constant threat on the Bunol goal. Lewis tried to get in on the act with a 25 yard free kick that was saved at the expense of a corner by goalkeeper Joan. Torry continued in the second half where they left off in the first. On 52 minutes Lewis Allen timed his run to perfection, speeding past the Bunol defence and looking likely to unleash a left foot pile driver into the net. Instead he realised that Pastor had joined him in the middle and he squared the ball to him with precision, allowing the Ozbound winger to score his second (pictured below). More should have followed but the linesman had a poor game, missing a couple of infringements and penalising Torry for offside, when it patently was not the case. A big win for Torry, with the Muro mid-week match pending, and then two home matches to come against Alzira, and then the bottom of the table whipping boys, Segorbe, who Almoradi saw off on Sunday (see next column).

Almoradi picked up their expected win at hapless Segorbe on Sunday, but they were made to work for it against the Valencian third division’s bottom side. Helped by Torrevieja beating Bunol (see adjoining column), Almoradi’s recent form has seen them cut the gap to safety ( like Torrevieja), to just three points. Importantly, they have played a game more than the teams around them, and they had a tough trip scheduled for Wednesday at third-placed Villarreal (news on page 45). It didn’t start well for

Almoradi on Sunday as Sopeña put the bottom side into the lead after 12 minutes, and it could have been worse but for a good Adrian save 11 minutes later. Momo netted for the visitors on the half-hour mark, but it was disallowed by referee Gamón Canovas much to the anger of the Almoradi players. David (pictured below) though made it allsquare though with six minutes remaining of the first period. Momo put Almoradi ahead shortly after the restart, but Segorbe had a lot of the possession, without creating any dangerous

chances, short of an Adrian save from a Ricky header. The nerves of the visitors were calmed after Obele netted in the 77th minute, and the away points for Almoradi were secured, with attention immediately turned a much sterner midweek test to come. Other results saw Orihuela pick up a point in a goaless draw at Paterna, which put Orihuela five points behind four-placed Alzira. Crevillente shared a nil-nil home scoreline with leaders Olimpic, whilst Elche Ilicitano recorded a fine one-nil victory over Novelda.

Back In Business

Football always produces strange ironies, and after losing to a late goal the previous weekend, Thader got a late strike themselves to beat Alicante University to rekindle their promotion hopes, as they ended a barren winless streak. Both sides were positive from the start in a contest

that could have gone either way, but despite chances at either end, it was nil-nil at the interval. The University side started stronger after the break, with good opportunities from Martinez and Puerto, who had an excellent match. But at the other end, Thader got going again forcing keeper Carbo into a

string of good saves, until the pressure told right at the death with Rafa getting the only goal and three vital points for the visitors. Thader are back in fourth placed in the Preferente group four table, and they entertain second-placed La Nucia this Sunday, who are nine points ahead of the Rojales-based side.

Magical Messi

Real’s Key Win

Brave Elche Fall

BARCELONA 5 CELTA VIGO 0 EIBAR 1 REAL MADRID 4 Lionel Messi scored two superb individual goals as Barcelona produced an great display to see off Celta Vigo on Saturday to keep their one point lead at the top of La Liga. Outbound coach Luis Enrique watched his Barca side run Celta ragged with great interplay in attack and high pressing. Messi made it 1-0 when he ran 45 yards and slotted in, before Neymar scored with a superb dinked finish. Barca increased their lead with strikes from Ivan Rakitic and Samuel Umtiti before another solo effort from Messi. Barcelona are away to struggling Deportivo this Sunday afternoon.

Unbelievable!

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane says his side's win over Eibar at the Ipurua Municipal last Saturday was "a good sign for us", with the result keeping them a point behind leaders Barcelona with a game in hand. Though the trip to the Basque Country looked challenging on paper, with Los Armeros holding European aspirations for next season, Zidane's men ran out comfortable winners with two goals from Karim Benzema and strikes from Marco Asensio and James Rodriguez. Benzema's goals were his first in the league since January 7th and only his sixth and seventh in La Liga all season, but speaking after the game, his manager had nothing but praise both for the frontman and his team-mates. Zidane said: "I am happy for his game, for the two goals, and he was also involved in the other two. I am happy for him, and for all of them. We all played very well." Madrid’s next league match sees them entertain Real Betis this Sunday evening.

Ramos Rescue BARCELONA 6 PSG 1 (AGG 6-5) Barcelona made Champions League history by becoming the first team to overturn a first-leg 4-0 deficit as they knocked out Paris St-Germain to reach the quarter-finals for the 10th successive season. In an astonishing night, the La Liga champions were 5-3 down on aggregate in the 88th minute, but scored three goals in the final seven minutes in one of the greatest European ties of all time. Neymar's free-kick and penalty followed by Sergi Roberto's 95th-minute winner sealed victory on an incredible night at the Nou Camp(more reaction on opposite page), and they’ll fear nobody in today’s quarter-final draw, as well sending out a message that will not be giving up their La Liga title in a hurry.

Monte March On

NAPOLI 1 REAL MADRID 3 (AGG 2-6) Real Madrid overcame a dismal first half to end Napoli's Champions League quarter-final hopes with a clinical win at the San Paolo on Tuesday. Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo were back after they missed last weekend’s win at Eibar (see above) due to suspension and injury. But Napoli were utterly dominant in a one-sided first half and took the lead on 24 minutes when Marek Hamsik put Dries Mertens through on goal as Real's defence went missing. Real captain Sergio Ramos netted one and had another header deflected in by Mertens after the break to put the holders in control. Alvaro Morata then followed up Cristiano Ronaldo's shot to complete a comfortable victory. The quarter-final draw takes place today.

LEVANTE 2 ELCHE 1 Elche seem this season to have saved their best when taking on the better sides in the Segunda division, and so it was last weekend when they were unlucky to come away with nothing from the runaway leaders Levante. In fact it took two penalties for the home side to grab all the points after the Ilicitanos dominated the first half in a display that silenced the home fans. Elche had a great start as they took the lead in the second minute, when Borja Valle put in a fine ball for Nino who struck for his 100th goal for the Ilicitanos (celebrations pictured). The veteran striker opened for his account for Elche back in the 97/98 season in their 3-1 victory over Figueres. Levante offered only one moment of concern in the first half when Lerma produced a save from Juan Carlos. Levante made a double substitution at the start of the second half, and got a controversial penalty in the 52nd minute when the referee adjudged, much to the chagrin of the Elche players, that Túñez had handled in the penalty area, with Casadesús converting the spot kick. Though Levante were better than in the first half, Elche continued to be positive, with both sides looking for the crucial second goal. It came in the 87th minute when Dorca brought down Casadesús in the penalty area, and there was no doubt about the award this time from the referee, with Juan Muñoz this time scoring from the spot. It was a disappointing end for Elche who deserved a lot more for their efforts, and will be hoping to main last weekend’s level of performance when they entertain Alcorcon this Friday evening with an 8.00 pm kick-off.

Three In A Row

Almoradi Lose MURO CF 0 CD TORREVIEJA 1

CD MONTESINOS 3 SPORTING ORIHUELA 2 CD Montesinos are getting the results in group 16, but some of their recent form is patchy. The visitors, in truth, deserved something on Sunday, after they were thrashed the previous weekend by Benijofar. Nevertheless, Monte are now joint-top of the table with Benijofar, and they do have a game in hand. Vaz scored for Monte in the 18th minute when his low shot comfortably beat the keeper, in what was a scrappy encounter. Two minutes later, Monte failed to clear the ball inside their own area allowing Barullo to equalise, but just before half time, centre-half Joao headed home from a corner to send Monte ahead at the interval. The score line stayed the same until the 40th minute when Orihuela equalised, thanks to a Bashir own goal, who tried to head clear but saw the ball find its way into the net. Monte though responded with a cracking goal after good play from Aure and Vaz, who played in Alfredo to slot home the winner. This weekend Monte have a big match on Saturday away to fourth-placed Callosa(kick-off 5.00 pm), who themselves are just two points off the top of the table.

VILLARREAL CF 1 CD ALMORADI 0 After Sunday’s win at bottom side Segorbe(report on page 45), Wednesday night’s match at promotion candidates Villarreal was always going to be tough for Almoradi. With Torrevieja winning(see next column) and Bunol six points ahead of them in the safety zone(plus a game in hand), Almoradi’s task of avoiding the drop has got that much harder. Almoradi’s David struck over the bar in their best chance on the half-hour, before Villarreal really put the squeeze on. Darío got the only goal in the 57th minute, and though the home side dominated proceedings, Almoradi did create chances, and Saul ten minutes later could have equalised. Almoradi entertain Orihuela in a crucial derby on Sunday with a 5.30 pm kick-off, with Orihuela just five points off fourth place after their Wednesday 4-2 win at home to Borriol. Elsewhere, Crevillente won two-one at Rayo Ibense, and now have a blank weekend, whilst Elche Ilicitano play Castellon, on the back of their one-nil loss at second-placed Ontinyent.

Torrevieja have now won three matches in 10 days, and this was a vital victory against fellow relegation candidates Muro on Wednesday, but Bunol (who Torry beat on Sunday, report on page 45) kept the gap to safety to three points as they beat Silla. This was must-win for both sides, and the first half was scrappy, only brightened by the endeavours of Lewis Allen. He ensured the Muro defence had no respite. The first half ended goalless with the strong feeling that one goal would settle it. Lewis hit a rasping 25-yard free kick which Carlos in the home goal did well to turn over for a corner, and the tireless striker continued to deliver with chances, as the clock ticked relentlessly towards the ninety minute mark. With ten minutes left, the ruthless Pastor chased a pass out the left flank and elected to cut inside, brushing two defenders aside as he made his way to the edge of the box. From just outside, he curled his right foot shot beautifully inside the far post to win the match, and making him the joint-top scorer in the regional third division. Javi Meca was again superb, marshalling the back four, and it is no coincidence that since his arrival, Torry has been playing like a team with confidence and strength. Muro huffed and puffed but apart from a one on one with Jose Carlos following a dreadful mistake by Calzado, they did not threaten. Next for Torry is promotion-chasing Alzira on Sunday at the Nelson Mandela stadium with a 5.00 pm kick-off, whilst Bunol have a tricky-looking match at Torre Levante.

Have A Break

FIXTURES Friday 10th March 2017 SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP 20:45 Brighton & Hove Albion v Derby County LADBROKES SCOTTISH CHAMPIONSHIP 20:45 Dundee United v Hibernian

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique has paid tribute to his club's supporters for inspiring Wednesday’s dramatic comeback over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last-16 second leg at the Nou Camp (see opposite page). The extraordinary result came exactly a week after Enrique announced his decision to stand down from his job at the end of a season which could yet end with a second treble in three seasons. The former Spanish international has dedicated the result to the supporters who he believes were behind the unlikely victory. "The key, clearly, has been the faith that has had in the team, with 3-1 in the 84th minute," he explained, according to the Marca newspaper. "I do not think any of us stopped believing. Looking back, despite their goal, I feel that our performance was impressive, we risked a lot and it was worth it. These endings sometimes happen in football and today we've felt that.” "In terms of emotion, intensity it is something that fits the club very well and I love to enjoy as a coach. This competition does not forgive a bad match. We did it in Paris together with a very good one of them." In a message to the club's recent critics, Enrique added: "I would like to emphasise those who didn't have the faith when we lost 4-0. This is dedicated to them because we are not the Harlem Globetrotters, this is football." Croatian midfielder Ivan Ratikic revealed afterwards that Barcelona took inspiration from the Super Bowl in pulling off the biggest comeback that the Champions League has ever seen. Just as the New England Patriots came back from 25 points down to beat the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in that American showpiece, Barca came back from four goals from a last-16 first leg against Paris Saint-Germain to win 6-1 on the night and 6-5 on aggregate. That they had to recover from an away goal at 3-0 up made it all the more remarkable. "No, I cannot believe it,” Rakitic told BeIn Sport. “It was really impossible. 15-20 minutes after the game, it is crazy and unbelievable. “Thank you to the team, to the people around the club and the fans. It was a really special day and it is hard to say something. The first game in Paris was hard for us, a lot of people spoke hard with our team but the reaction was special. It is history. We want to keep going on.” “We had to believe. 4-0 was hard, but it is football. We saw it in the Super Bowl, what is possible in sport. Today was crazy. This is Barcelona, the best team in the world and we want to continue our dream in the Champions League.” Meanwhile match-winner Sergi Roberto admitted he wasn't sure if his decisive injury-time goal would count. "I've thrown everything. I didn't know if I was onside. I'm very happy," Roberto told BeIn Sports. "I threw myself on the ground and I saw the goalkeeper (Kevin Trapp) didn't stop it." "They say the fans are one more player, but today they were 10 more," Roberto added. "In the end, this is also for them. Now to celebrate and think about the league game (against Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday)."

Gareth Bale believes Spanish clubs have an edge over English sides because there is no winter break in the Premier League. The Real Madrid winger has won the Champions League twice since moving to the Bernabeu in 2013 from Tottenham, and is on course to secure a third title this season. By contrast, Manchester City were the only English team still in the competition who were ahead after the first leg of their last-16 ties. Spanish sides have won the event in each of the last three campaigns as well as four of the last eight, while Sevilla have taken the last three Europa League titles. Bale, who recently returned from an ankle injury, thinks a mid-season pause in play is proving to be beneficial for La Liga clubs. The Wales international said: "Every game in the Premier League, you have to be at 100 per cent for 90 minutes or you will lose. "In Spain, you can be up at half-time against the bottom club and take your foot off the gas. "You can rest players and take people off. If you try for 45 minutes, you won't win a match in the Premier League. "Obviously the winter break is massive. In England, you'll play four or five games and we don't play any. You don't get many rest days and it really does burn you out for a long time after that. "It's nice to really get away from it, mentally as well as physically. Spanish teams definitely know they have this edge over the English. "Every country does: Spain, Italy, Germany, they all have the winter break."

Suarez Is Shy

Luis Suarez admits he found it difficult to be Liverpool captain and prefers keeping a lower profile at Barcelona. The Uruguay international stepped in to wear the captain's armband on occasion during his time at Anfield when the Reds were without usual skipper Steven Gerrard. Barcelona's abundance of long-serving players has seen the 30-year-old take a more back-seat role at the Nou Camp since moving from Merseyside in 2014, but Suarez claims staying out of the limelight suits him. "I like the low profile, to be a player among the others," Suarez told France Football. "I am there to give a helping hand to the team but taking decisions, that is not really my thing. At Liverpool, I had the chance to be captain and it was not easy for me.” "Even if people find it hard to believe, I am someone quite shy. I am not used to pushing myself forward." "There are players who are more marketable than me, more gifted with the media, but that does not bother me," Suarez added. "The individual titles that I have been able to win, I got them on the pitch thanks to my performances and the help of my team-mates. "In England, I had the luck to be recognised at the same time by the players and the press. At the international level, I know there are players who are above me. But that is not something that bothers me."

UP FOR THE CUP

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is said to planning to bring back all of Chelsea’s big names for Monday night’s FA Cup quarterfinal showdown against Manchester United. Chelsea head coach Conte has rotated his team for the FA Cup this season, but did bring back Eden Hazard and Diego Costa for the fifth-round victory over Wolves. Conte is said to be going even stronger and restoring the likes of Thibaut Courtois, N’Golo Kante and Gary Cahill to his FA Cup team. Jose Mourinho will be hoping for a better result on his second return to Stamford Bridge since being sacked last season, with United losing 4-0 in the league to the Blues last year. The first match is tomorrow lunchtime as Premier League strugglers Middlesborough entertain Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City (1.15 pm). Later non-league Lincoln City will hope to inflict more embarrassment on stuttering Arsenal in their 6.30 pm clash at the Emirates. The remaining fixture is an all-London affair at White Hart Lane on Sunday (3.00 pm), as Spurs take on Millwall.

OH CALCUTTA!

Billy Vunipola has been named on the bench for England's Calcutta Cup meeting with Scotland tomorrow (Saturday, 5.00 pm, live on ITV). The number eight made his comeback from a knee injury last week but Nathan Hughes will continue in the position in an unchanged England pack. The backline shows three changes, with scrum-half Ben Youngs, centre Jonathan Joseph and wing Jack Nowell returning. "It's the oldest international fixture and it means a lot to both countries," said head coach Eddie Jones. A victory for Six Nations table-topping England at Twickenham on Saturday would give the defending Grand Slam champions a record-equalling 18th consecutive win. The Six Nations action starts tonight in Cardiff with Wales playing Ireland with a 9.00 pm kick-off(live on BBC 1), whilst tomorrow afternoon, Italy play France in Rome, kicking-off at 2.30 pm (live on ITV) in battle between two teams hoping to avoid the wooden spoon.

LA MARQUESA RETURN

One of golf’s great characters, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, is back in Quesada this weekend for two events at La Marquesa Golf Club. First tomorrow will be the Miguel Ángel Jiménez National Junior Challenge, followed on Sunday by the 25th Justo Quesada y Josefina Memorial Charity Pro-Am. The Junior Challenge has been organised since 2012 for the best young players aged from seven to 18 years old. Groups of three will start teeing off from 8.00 am, with prize giving and a demonstration from Miguel Ángel at 5.00 pm. Sunday’s memorial tournament has become a regular fixture on his calendar for many years, an honour that club president Jose Ángel Quesada still finds it hard to believe. A total of 28 teams each consisting of one professional and three amateurs will be competing in a shotgun start from 9.00 am. The tournament is named after the man who built the course and the surrounding urbanisation, along with the name of his wife. Last year, over eight thousand euros was raised for charity and this year’s beneficiaries will be the DEBRA (Butterfly Children) foundation, Cáritas Rojales, and Rojales council’s social concerns department. The tournament will finish at about 1.30 pm and will be followed by the prize giving, a charity auction and lunch.
