HUGGERS HALTED

three-strong Romanian “hugging” gang, that operated around Alicante Province and the Murcia region, are behind bars after being arrested by the Guardia Civil in Dolores. It's the latest in a whole string of “hugging “ incidents and detentions involving Romanians to hit the region over the last 15 months. The trio, two women and a man (pictured in handcuffs), were based in Alicante City, and have been charged with 19 crimes, including five cases of robbery with violence, and were refused bail after appearing at an Orihuela court. The thieves, aged between 22 and 32, used the routine of trying to get help or information from their mainly elderly victims, who would be walking on their own. In a well-drilled routine, the two women would make their approach, with the man waiting in a car for a quick getaway. One of the women would hug their victim as a form of thanks, whilst the other one would then lift any jewellery or a purse/wallet. Their routine was all about striking fast, without the victim noticing what had happened or just being too slow to react, because of their age and vulnerability. If their “mark” immediately suspected that something suspicious was going on, then the women did not hesitate to resort to violence to make sure that they escaped with their loot. The Guardia Civil said

BY ALEX TRELINSKI that they gave special priority to tracking down the trio because of the callous nature of their crimes. A spokesman said that a woman with a walking frame had money and jewellery taken from her, and in another case, an elderly man praying at the grave of his recently deceased wife, was offered sexual favours by the Romanian females, who then stole his watch. Cemeteries were said to be a particular favourite of the gang to find their potential victims. The crooks used a variety of cars to get to their destinations, and it was in Dolores that they came unstuck. The Guardia had launched an operation against them, with the trio trying to rob an elderly man in the town. Officers were in position in three unmarked cars, and blocked off their escape, and took them into custody. One of those arrested was wanted by authorities in Austria and France. Meanwhile in the northern Costa Blanca, a four-member Romanian hugging crew

has been detained by the Guardia Civil in Altea. The three women and one man, who, like in the Dolores case, was the getaway driver, would operate all around Spain, as they kept moving from place to place. One of the gang members, a 26-year-old woman, had only been arrested on similar charges two days earlier, and a check revealed that she was wanted in connection with 233 crimes right across the country. She has been charged over a whole string of robberies and robberies with violence, including a number in Cox in Alicante Province, as well further north in Altea, Alfaz, and Ontinyent. On this occasion, bail was not granted. Hugging robberies started to be reported at the start of last year, with a Playa Flamenca woman being robbed of a Rolex watch, but the huggers failed to get her wedding ring off her finger, before escaping in a car driven by a man. Police confirmed at the time that they were looking for a Romanian trio in connection with the

incident. Further reports came in all during 2016, with a group operating in Santa Pola and Guardamar (with two arrests made), and the Guardia Civil warning of a gang roaming around the Vega Baja and striking inland in towns like Bigastro. Back in November, a Romanian woman appeared before a Jávea judge after stealing an eight thousand euro Rolex watch in Almoradi, and then went north to plunder items in Calpe, Aspe and Polop. This included a 16 thousand euro Rolex watch being stolen in Calpe, with the total value of the pilfered items said to be 27 thousand euro. Despite the sheet of charges, she was granted bail. In February, two Romanians, aged in their mid-twenties, were “caught in the act” by plain-clothed Guardia agents during a “hugging” robbery at a Jávea service station. A woman was denied bail, after she tried to steal a gold ring from an elderly man as she hugged him.

A 33-year-old Moroccan man who distributed fake football shirts to local markets has been arrested by the Guardia Civil in Benijófar. The hawker was detained after Guardia agents tracked a shipment of the counterfeit sports gear from Alicante-Elche airport before he sold them onto market traders at Guardamar, Torrevieja, and

Campoamor. The man was charged with possession of 700 fake shirts, many of which featured leading Spanish clubs, as well as spreading the wings further to cover Bayern Munich and Manchester United. The market value of the fakes was said to be around 25 thousand euro, and the vendor was bailed after a court appearance.

A Clean Sweep

Dealer Tasered A Torrevieja-based car dealer was tasered as he was robbed of keys to his vehicles by four people, who then proceeded to steal four cars that he had in a unit in the city. Two men, a 60-year-old German and a 48-yearold Russian, and two women, a 46-year-old German and a 36-year-old Russian, were arrested by the Guardia Civil in connection with the robberies at their homes in Quesada and Guardamar. The victim told the Guardia that he had met his assailants before. The incident happened on Thursday March 23rd, when the group met the Lithuanian dealer and one of the women fired a taser at him several times, before a briefcase was snatched containing keys

to his fleet. Whilst the dealer went for medical treatment ahead of reporting the assault, the robbers did not waste any time in going to his car lot, and stealing four vehicles, which were recovered by the Guardia

at their homes, along with the briefcase and the taser used in the attack. The four accused have appeared in court and have been charged with violent robbery, but have been released on bail.

Orihuela council says that beaches on the Orihuela Costa will be clean and ready for the Easter season, with the removal of debris caused by the winter storms set to have been completed this week. Beaches and coastal councillor Luisa Boné and

cleaning councillor Dámaso Aparicio are pictured checking out the progress of work, with the councillors stating that extra refuse collections will also take place on the Orihuela Costa during the holiday period due to increased visitor numbers over Easter.

Over 430 thousand foreign tourists visited the Valencia region in February, a rise of 24 percent over a year, according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics. 75 percent of the visitors based themselves on the Costa Blanca, with 150 thousand tourists coming from

the United Kingdom, a yearly increase of nearly 13 percent. The second largest group came from France at over 63 thousand visitors (up by a bumper 40 percent), with visitors from the Scandinavian countries clocking in at 40 thousand (up by 41 percent).

A 69-year-old golfer on the Las Ramblas course on the Orihuela Costa had an unscheduled end to his round last Friday, after he fell down a seven metre high slope. The man, said to be of Danish nationality, had to be rescued by a Torrevieja fire crew, who used a ladder to carry him to safety. He was taken to Torrevieja Hospital where he was treated for bruising to his head and arms.

First Bidder

The current operators of San Javier airport are to launch a bid to run the new facility at Corvera, with reports suggesting that they will drop their bid for compensation over San Javier’s closure, fuelled by a new runaway being built there a few years ago. AENA, who also run Alicante-Elche airport, are

said to have put in an expression of interest in the first stage of the Corvera tendering process, with AENA said to be keeping its powder dry over any closure of San Javier, with no specific dates mentioned in the bid. The formal tender to run Corvera was published by the regional govern-

ment on March 25th, with prospective bidders given until the end of April to say they are interested in tendering for the 25-year franchise, which would then be followed by a 60 day period for the bidders to present their detailed plans. So far, only AENA has made an open declaration of interest.

Men Of Shame The Guardia Civil say they have detained 102 alleged paedophiles accused of watching and sharing images of child sex abuse, under Operation Pilumnus, with five arrests in Alicante Province, which included a swimming coach. A man was also detained in Los Alcazares. Agents swooped across the country after catching men downloading explicit content online, some involving infants as young as a few months old. Over 450 thousand photos and videos were uncovered, according to investigator Pedro Corrales, who took part in the operation. Their profiles vary from young students to unemployed people, retirees and professionals including a legal consultant. Some of the suspects are married with children. "For one of them, we found videos filmed with a hidden camera of the son of his current partner," said

Murcia’s under-fire regional government president, Pedro Antonio Sánchez, quit on Tuesday after realising that he had no chance of winning a censure vote in parliament this week. Antonio Sánchez of the Partido Popular, who is facing two separate corruption probes, lost the support of the centrist-Ciudadanos party a few weeks ago over his corruption links, after they run the regional government in coalition with the PP. On Monday, National Court judge Eloy Velasco said that there were 44 solid reasons why the now-ex Murcia president should be placed under investigation over allegations in the socalled Operation Punica, which is a wide-ranging nationwide probe over corruption between politicians and businesses. The judge had been looking at Antonio

Sánchez’s dealings with businessman Alejandro de Pedro, when he was Murcia’s education secretary in 2014. “I’m resigning for the sake of Murcia”, said Antonio Sánchez on Tuesday. The move scraps the censure motion which the PSOE socialists formally withdrew after his announcement. Since Ciudadanos split with the PP because of the corruption issue involving Antonio Sánchez, they are now expected to side with a new PP nomination for the top job. That person is expected to be 33-year-old Fernando López Miras, who is the PP’s regional general secretary. The ex-President remains as the PP’s regional leader and also a deputy in the Murcia Assembly, with a pledge to “clear to my name”.

Expensive Call

Corrales. "Scenes of high sexual violence against under-age victims" appeared in some of the material uncovered, the Guardia added in a statement. The victims' ages ran from a few months to around 14 years old, Corrales said, adding that the Guardia had identified some of the Spanish children involved. Others were from Asia or Latin America, prompting the

Guardia to contact police in other countries to try and identify them. Corrales said the job was tough on agents, who had to comb through masses of content. "It's rewarding when you get a result like this one, but it's a difficult job, day after day, very detailed. You have to have special training in these kinds of crimes, as well as psychological preparation," he added.

Opposition councillors have called for the resignation of a San Miguel de Salinas councillor who ran up a personal 65 euro bill on a council mobile phone. UPyD councillor María José Costa has apologised and refunded the money to the authority, amidst claims that she had been making calls to a premium Tarot Love line, something that she has strenuously denied. The councillor said she had made a "very serious mistake", and that she was going through a "difficult time emotionally". She added that she had made some calls from her car and she thought her personal unit had been connected, as opposed to the council-

funded phone, which she ended up using by mistake. Opposition PSOE and IU councillors want José Costa to quit, and have demanded to see the phone bill to clarify the matter. UPyD are in a coalition deal with the PPr in San Miguel, which has kept the PP in power after it lost its overall majority in local elections back in May 2015.

Road Block

There’s been a major blow to the much-delayed project to convert the N-332 into a dual carriageway around Torrevieja, with the Public Works ministry in Madrid saying that 13 changes are needed to the plans. Land and layout issues predominate as well as environmental concerns, in addition to the ministry saying that a traffic flow survey from 2007 is inadequate. Torrevieja mayor José Manuel Dolón says the ministry has referred the matter back to the Valencian government who the mayor insists fully back the project, though he admitted the changes would be “difficult”. Dolón plans to meet Valencia’s Public Works minister María José Salvador to try, in his words, to “unblock the paralysed project”. Back in the autumn, Dolón, said that the process to approve the project would start "soon", and the work would be done as "quickly as possible". It was though made clear that the green light for the project was subject to an environmental impact report.

New Gizmo Elche area taxis, which cover Alicante-Elche airport, are being equipped with a new hi-tech system which will allow people to book services in English. It’s all part of a GPS and computer unit that will also display the fastest route for passengers, depending on traffic flows and road closures. The latest details will be immediately updated to the units, which will also give customers a quote for their journey, and will also link up the taxi drivers to tour companies or travel websites that need to book their services.

Unhappy Mayor

Rafal's PSOE mayor, Manuel Pineda, has officially started legal proceedings against the leader of the Partido Popular group on the council, María Dolores Navarro, after he accused her of slander. Earlier this year Pineda accused her of lying over a statement that the route of the CV-912 development had been changed to avoid it going past his house. Dolores Navarro said that she never referred to the CV-912, but was making a reference to other plans involving a road that would run close to Pineda's home. The mayor says that he's got fed up with lies and slander thrown at him, but that the first stage of the legal process is a demand for an apology which the PP spokeswoman would have to give at the next plenary meeting of Rafal council. If Pineda does not get that, then he would go ahead with pushing for fifteen hundred euro of compensation, which would then be donated to the Cruz Roja.

Torrevieja's animal protection councillor, Carmen Morate, has courted controversy by suggesting in a radio interview that “drinking cow's milk is the worse thing we can do to our body”. The main opposition party on the council, the Partido Popular, says her claims have no scientific basis, with the PP's local general secretary and national

Congress member, Joaquín Albaladejo, calling on the Valencian health minister, Carmen Montón, and local health authorities to distance themselves from the comments. Morate, of the Green Party, defended her statement saying that her comments were based on international recorded reports that can be found on the internet.

Pavement Praise

Torrevieja mayor José Manuel Dolón has praised the Valencian regional government for completing a new pedestrian sidewalk on the CV-95 in the Los Balcones area of the city in what he described as

Make A Note

A new-style 50 euro note is now in circulation in Spain, but the 'old' version will still be used for some time. Along with the new lower denomination notes, the latest version of the 50

euro note includes better anti-forgery features, such as a clear plastic window with a hologram of the goddess Europa visible on either face, which becomes transparent against the light.

Along with the other three notes, of 5, 10 and 20 euro value, the new 50 note includes the figure of its denomination in emerald-green, which turns blue when the note is tipped slightly.

Mortgage Movers

322 new benches for parks and streets across Alicante Province are being provided in a roll-out by Alicante Provincial Council to 62 municipalities in the area. Bigastro, Daya Vieja, Dolores, Rafal, and San Miguel de Salinas are amongst the local councils that are set to benefit.

New mortgages signed for went up by nearly 17 percent in January this year, compared to 12 months earlier, according to the latest figures, suggesting a significant recovery in the Spanish housing market. The average mortgage taken out, according to January's figures was over a 23-year period, for a total

loan of 112,844 euro and with an interest rate of just over three percent. Mortgages taken out purely for residential homes made up 61 percent of the total, with the rest being for plots of land and commercial premises. The biggest mortgage rises were in the Madrid, Catalunya, and Andalucia regions.

Spain's government has published its long-delayed draft budget for 2017 which boosts social spending and moves away from austerity in a bid to win opposition support for the spending plans. Finance Minister Cristobal Montoro said the budget would "fuel growth and employment" while at the same time allowing Spain to meet the deficit targets agreed with the European Union. The spending plan slashes the IVA tax controversially slapped a few years ago on live shows such as concerts and theatre perform-

ances from 21 percent to 10 percent and boosts funding for programmes to aid youths and the unemployed. It is the first budget without major cutbacks since Spain was plunged into an economic crisis in 2008 when a decade-long property boom finally turned to bust, throwing millions of people out of work and causing its public debt to soar. The 2017 budget was put on hold after two inconclusive elections left the country without a functioning government for nearly a year. It is based on a prediction that the Spanish econo-

my, the euro zone's fourth largest, will expand by two and a half percent in 2017 while the unemployment rate will drop to 16.6 percent from 18.6 percent last year, which will reduce spending on unemployment benefits and increase tax revenues. Parliament is expected to vote on the draft budget at the end of May. The budget vote will be a key test for Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's Partido Popular minority government as it well need the support or at least abstentions from other parties for the budget to be passed into law.

Bad Gets Worse

Spain's "bad bank" Sareb, created to clean up the country's finance sector, has reported another massive annual loss, for the fourth consecutive year. Sareb, set up in 2012 to take on around 50 billion euro in land, buildings and loans from

bailed-out banks, made a 663 million euro loss for 2016. Chairman Jaime Echegoyen said that with current financial and operating costs of over a billion euros it did "not seem reasonable" to expect Sareb to turn a profit in the foreseeable future. Sareb had initially

predicted it would make a profit in its second year of operation. Sareb has a mandate to sell the assets it holds in the 15 years from when it was established, and is jointly owned between the Spanish government and the country's banks.

Corruption Quiz

Spain's MPs have unanimously voted to start a probe into the alleged irregular financing of the Partido Popular, led by Mariano Rajoy, who are currently in power with a minority administration. A committee will investigate claims that the PP illegally financed several of its electoral campaigns using funds of dubious origin throughout the past few

decades. The initiative was introduced by the opposition Socialist Party (PSOE) along with the left-wing Podemos and centrist Ciudadanos party. The PP voted in favour of the motion at the last minute, after it had proposed to investigate the financing of every single political party, to no avail. This latest parliamentary

blow to the PP, which holds a fragile minority government, once again proved its weakness when faced with the other parties joining forces in opposition. The PP has been embroiled in countless corruption scandals in the past years, at a national and regional level, with a major probe taking place in the Valencia region.

Keep It Calm

Spain's foreign minister has urged the UK not to "lose tempers" over Gibraltar after some sabre-rattling from a former Conservative Party leader. Alfonso Dastis said he had been surprised by the tone of the response from the UK after the EU unveiled Brexit negotiation guidelines that effectively gave Spain significant power over Gibraltar's future. It comes after former Tory leader Lord Michael Howard said that he was sure Theresa May would be will-

ing to go to war over the British territory - like Margaret Thatcher had over the Falkland Islands. Mr Dastis said: "The Spanish government is a little surprised by the tone of comments coming out of Britain, a country known for its composure." Speaking shortly after Mr Dastis on Monday, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said the sovereignty of Gibraltar was unchanged and could not change without the agreement of Britain and Gibraltar.

Street Brawl

A Costa del Sol bar fight between a number of British men took a nasty turn last week, after one of them produced a gun and shot two of them outside in the street. The two men, who were on a golfing holiday, were not seriously injured, with the gunman found lying on the street in a semi-conscious state. The golfers involved in the incident had been drinking at an expat haunt called The Seaside Bar in Fuengirola.

Staff asked them and the suspected gunman to leave after an altercation inside the bar before the violence erupted on the pavement outside. It is not known why the problems occurred, but it is thought to be the result of an argument between strangers. The holidaymakers, aged between 55 and 60, are believed to have been staying at a hotel near the bar. One was hit in the leg and the other in the foot.

Death With Dignity

Grand Lobster

A photo of a giant, six-kilo lobster, which was caught by Santa Pola fishermen has been the doing the rounds of

social networking sites recently. The big lobster was the talk of local fishermen and

restaurant owners, though no mention was made of how much was paid for it by any buyer!

Rate Fall A 'dignified death' law for terminally-ill patients has been agreed in the Spanish Parliament, but does not include the right to euthanasia or assisted suicide. The draft law has all-party support and guarantees pain relief and dignity through effective palliative care. The text of the proposed legislation highlights the need to differentiate between 'reasonable therapeutic efforts' to extend the lives of terminal patients in

'dignified conditions', and simply 'prolonging life' when this would only involve additional suffering. “Extending life should not be considered to override the right of the patient to spend his or her final days in accordance with his or her personal convictions and beliefs,” the text says. This means pain relief and even sedation can be requested, even where this may shorten the patient's life, together with the right to

be treated at home or in any other place required – such as the home of a family member or friend – rather than being forced to stay in hospital. Those who need to stay in hospital will be allowed to have any friends, family members and even 'spiritual leaders' around them who they wish, and will now be allowed to stay in a single room rather than sharing with one or two other patients

There was good news from the financial world this week, as Spain's inflation rate went down more than expected

last month. The consumerprice index slipped to a three-month low of two point three percent, compared to

three percent in February, according to official figures. Experts had predicted a rate of two point six percent.

Gold Plated Pensions – Why now is a Good Time to Cash In By Richard Samuels, Blacktower Financial Management

to secure their pension pots. As schemes look to reduce their liabilities, sometimes offering these enhanced rates to get members off their books, expats are taking advantage. In some cases, they could be offered more than 20 times the value of the annual pension available normally on retirement.

Did you know that due to "low interest rates" at the moment, your Final Salary Pension transfer value could now be a small fortune!! STOP - before you start taking your pension speak to Blacktower. Opportunities like this don't come along more than once in a lifetime! Here is a typical case recently completed by myself:

Transferring the Cash Value to a Recognised Overseas Pension or UK SIPP (Self Invested Personal Pension) allows you to protect your pension funds in a new scheme. These schemes allow for flexible drawdown, and you can take a lump sum from the age of 55. Unlike “Final Salary” (DB) schemes, unused funds are also available to beneficiaries.

Peter and Anne S from Bradford were able to retire early to Spain by transferring their UK Final Salary Pensions. (Also known as (DB) or Defined Benefit schemes). Peter (age 58) had worked for a large UK Bank for over 20 years whilst Anne (age 56) had worked for a Financial Services company for over 30 years. Both were members of their companies' Final Salary pension schemes, although these had both been closed to future members with new contributory schemes replacing them. Louise, their only daughter, had recently relocated to Spain due to work commitments, and they were keen to join her by retiring early and moving to Spain themselves. However, the Normal Retirement date for them both was 60 years of age with their current work pensions. This meant they would have had to pay exit penalties if they wanted to retire early and draw their pensions. Having been referred to us we were able to look at some alternative options for them. We issued each of the pension schemes with a Letter of Authority which enabled us to liaise with the pension schemes on their behalf. The current schemes were offering annual pensions of £9,800 and £12,500 respectively, were they to retire at 60. Our reports showed that both pension schemes were in deficit meaning that they could be at risk of defaulting in the future. (As happened with BHS last year.) Cash equivalent transfer values were requested and Peter was offered £289,870 whilst Anne was offered a staggering £474,843 to exit her scheme! These high valuations are typical of the transfer values being obtained now. They

are at record highs because pension schemes are keen to reduce their balance sheets. Also, the current low interest rates (which affect the calculations) ensure that the transfer values being obtained now are exceptionally high. With our help, Peter and Anne were able to transfer these amounts to new overseas pension schemes backed by one of the largest insurance companies in the world. They were both able to take 25% tax free lumps sums which amounted to in £335,685 total. These funds have been used to buy their dream property in Spain and unsurprisingly they have both been able to retire years earlier than they anticipated. Along with the proceeds from the sale of their property in the UK, they still have total funds of over half a million pounds in their new pension schemes. Mortgage free, they can draw a comfortable income from these pensions knowing that any residual funds will be available as inheritance to their daughter. Final salary schemes usually provide a 50% spouse’s pension, however, on second death they normally finish and do not provide any funds for beneficiaries after this.

Act now and you too can take advantage. Many Expats, and people planning to move or retire to Spain, are using their right to request a transfer value in order

Contact me now to see if it is possible to transfer your pensions like Peter and Anne.

A new UK survey suggests that cats may be taking over as man’s best friend, with an increase in men having a feline as a pet, as opposed to a dog. The number of pet cats in the country has gone up by half a million to reach eight million in the past year. Research by the Pet Food Manufacturers' Association (PFMA) says the rise was driven by one million more men getting a feline friend. The research saw eight thousand households interviewed, and it revealed that that revealed 17 percent of British men (at five and a half million) now own a cat, which is an increase of 13 per cent compared to 2016. Hugh Wigmore lives in London with his cat Nigel Harmsworth. "I like having a cat because we have loads in common," said Hugh. "We both love cuddles, jelly and the outdoors!” "We get on really well. I'd definitely recommend it to other guys. Nigel is fantastic." James Copeman, from Canterbury, said having cats made his house "feel full" and loves coming home to his two, Miles and Keiko, waiting at the door. "We never had pets when I was young so it's something I've always wanted," he said. "They always seem to know when you need a bit of attention after a bad day”, he continued. Michael Bellingham, chief executive of PFMA, said: "Pet ownership is a rewarding experience for everyone. It's wonderful to see that men are realising the huge benefits of pets with an increase in cat ownership in this sector." The most popular pet in the UK though is fish - 33 million

are kept in tanks and ponds around the country - followed by dogs at eight and a half million. There are also 900 thousand rabbits, 700 thousand pet birds, 700 thousand reptiles, 600 thousand domestic fowl, 500 thousand guinea pigs and 300 thousand hamsters. Meanwhile a new study has been published which sheds some interesting light on cat behaviour, with cats often receiving a bad rap for being perceived as less affectionate than dogs – but the findings of the survey seems to prove otherwise. A report published in the Behavioural Processes journal showed that the majority of cats preferred social interaction with humans over food – or any other stimulation, for that matter. Researchers placed a mixture of 50 different shelter cats and household cats in a room without entertainment or stimuli; no food, no toys, and no people. After letting the cats sit for a few hours, they were presented with all three options at the same time. Though there was some degree of individual variability, the overwhelming majority of felines preferred to interact with the humans over food. Only 37 percent of the cats preferred the nourishment. “While it has been suggested that cat sociality exists on a continuum, perhaps skewed toward independency, we have found that 50 percent of cats tested preferred interaction with the social stimulus even though they had a direct choice between social interaction with a human and their other most preferred stimuli from the three other stimulus categories,” the study concluded.

Cave Of Death Three male teenagers have been arrested for starting a fire in an Almería province cave which killed two girls aged 14 and 16, as well as a 21-year-old man on Monday night. A blaze was started outside the cave in the Molineta just north of Almería city, spreading to an old sofa dumped inside the grotto. The flames engulfed the outside of the cave, preventing its occu-

pants from getting out. Fire-fighters said that the bodies of the three people showed 'multiple burns', so it is not known whether it was the smoke which killed them or the actual contact with the flames. They were exploring about two or three metres underground at the time, and were completely trapped and at the mercy of the blaze.

Dirty Cards Thirty-eight people have been arrested in Spain, after the National Police broke up a criminal gang dealing in international credit card fraud. Authorities said those detained were in a gang that specialised in the counterfeit and fraudulent use of credit cards from international banks which were fiddled out of nearly one and a half million euro. The banks were based in Italy, Britain, the United States, Australia and Germany. The police said the gang created a virtual travel agency offering online plane and train tickets, hotel reser-

vations, car rentals and other purchases and paid suppliers with cloned credit cards. The fraudsters worked with local businesses in

Madrid, Sevilla, Cadiz, Malaga, Marbella, and Cordoba, who accepted payments from the fraudulent cards for a percentage of the profits.

Hand-Dotted Tumblers Gather your friends for a fun afternoon of crafting while making these colorful and unique hand-dotted tumblers. Along with being easy to create, the finished tumblers cost around $3 each to make. Pick up tumblers from your local resale shop or dollar store for a serious deal. Use enamel acrylic paints from your local craft store for longstanding color, and you're on your way to festive gifts for everyone.

What You'll Need: Red, yellow, blue, and white enamel acrylic paint Glass tumblers Paper towel Cotton swabs Sheet pan Parchment paper Directions: Gather the materials for creating the dotted tumblers. Use an enamel or all-surface acrylic for long-standing results. You can purchase small containers at your local craft store. Fold a sheet of paper towel in half and then in half again. Squeeze out a small dollop of each color of paint and then mix together to create additional colors for your tumblers. You can create different tints of colors by adding white. Or experiment with mixing the primary colors to create greens, oranges, and purples. Place a length of parchment paper on a sheet pan, and then place the glasses upside-down on the pan. Press the end of a cotton swab in one color of paint, and dot around the base of the glass. Continue dotting with other colors to create a first layer of dots, and then let dry while working on the rest of the glasses. Continue working on the other glasses, experimenting with color combinations. Once the first layer is dry, go back and add more colorful dots, working from the base of the glass to the sides — staying clear of the edges of the tumblers. Let the finished dotted tumblers dry for an hour, and then flip them over on the sheet pan. Place in a cold oven and bake at 350°F for 30 minutes to set the paint. Turn off the heat and allow the glasses to cool in the oven for an hour before handling.

The 73-year-old mother told police, who arrived at her home in La Felguera, that she was frightened her son, 50, was going to kill her. His body had been in the house for nearly a week by then, although the cause of his death is not known. The body was taken away for a post-mortem, whilst health authorities took the mother in for a check-up and treatment.

Coca-Cola’s products Sprite and Fanta may be ‘poisonous’, rules Court

A high court judge in Nigeria has ruled that some popular soft drinks sold under the Coca-Cola brand could be poisonous. Bottles and cans of Fanta and Sprite in Nigeria may soon come with written health warnings after Justice Adedayo Oyebanji ordered the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) - the local manufacturer of the soft drinks - to place labels on the beverages to inform consumers against drinking them with vitamin C, according to a CNN report citing local sources. Coca-Cola said the claims are inaccurate and unsupported by science. “All our products are safe and strictly adhere to regulations in the countries where they are sold while complying with our company’s stringent global safety and quality standards,” a spokesperson for Coca-Cola told the Independent. Asked about drinks sold in the UK, Coca-Cola said: “Everywhere in the world, we review and evolve our recipes to meet the local market’s needs and tastes. All of the drinks that are sold in Great Britain are manufactured locally. Our priority is always to

provide great tasting, affordable drinks with the same high level of quality regardless of where they are sold.” The Lagos High Court ruled that high levels of benzoic acid and additives in CocaCola’s soft drinks could pose a health risk to consumers when mixed with ascorbic acid, commonly known as vitamin C. The judge also gave a fine equivalent to $6,350 (£5,115) to the National Agency For Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for failing to ensure health standards. "It is manifest that NAFDAC has been grossly irresponsible in its regulatory duties to the consumers of Fanta and Sprite manufactured by Nigeria Bottling Company," the judge said. "NAFDAC has failed the citizens of this great nation by its certification as satisfactory for human consumption products [...] which become poisonous in the presence of ascorbic acid," he added. The ruling was the result of a nine-year-long court battle initiated by Nigerian businessman Fijabi Adebo. Mr Adebo’s drinks company attempted to export the drinks to the UK in 2007. However, the beverages were confiscated by UK customs and after being tested by UK health authorities they were deemed unsafe for human consumption and destroyed. Mr Adebo then sued NBC, which had sold him the products. In an interview with the BBC, Mr Adebo said: "Initially they were flexing their muscles, which dragged [out] the process. I went to court to compel Nafdac to do its duty. "We shouldn't have a product that is considered substandard in Europe." NBC lawyers argued that the products were not intended for export but the defense was rejected by the judge. "Soft drinks manufactured by Nigeria Bottling Company ought to be fit for human consumption irrespective of colour or creed," the judge said. Both the NBC and NAFDAC are appealing against the ruling. “Both Benzoic Acid and Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) are ingredients approved by international food safety regulators and used in many food and beverage products around the world. These ingredients are also used in combination in some products within levels which may differ from one country to another as approved by the respective national food and drug regulators in line with the range prescribed by CODEX, the joint intergovernmental body responsible for harmonizing international food standards,” NBC said in a statement.

Depression and Low-fat diet A low-fat diet is regarded by many people as the ideal diet to keep healthy and prevent disease. Promoters of the low-fat diet point out that such a diet keeps cholesterol levels normal and prevents the risk of developing heart and brain diseases. The reality, however, is that cholesterol is not the cause of heart disease or stroke and many people on a low-fat diet still take medications to lower cholesterol. The plaque that clogs arteries results from inflammation triggered by toxins known as free radicals. It is true that there are bad fats that promote disease. However, there are also healthy fats that are required by the body. The brain is composed of 60% fat, and a quarter of this fat is pure cholesterol.

Without fat, the brain is unable to function properly and even repair itself. Unsurprising, low levels of fat will cause problems such as headaches, insomnia, depression and irrational, aggressive behaviour. The nerves have a coating made from fat that speeds up the transmission of signals in the body and provides protection against injury. In non-human primates like monkeys, cholesterol has been discovered to lower aggression and maintain harmonious social order. A Low-fat diet alters and reduces serotonin the 'feel good' hormone required by the brain to improve mood and prevent depression. In people and animals, serotonin dysfunction causes severe depression and suicide. Serotonin is a neuro-

transmitter of restraint. In healthy people, serotonin is turned on to suppress an unhealthy impulse such as a violent act or irrational anger. People with depression have low levels of some nutrients found in fatty foods such as Omega-3 fatty acids and other essential fats. Many people on a low-fat diet consume a high carbohydrate diet rich in sugars and low in nutrients. A high carb diet causes depression. Coconut oil and Butter are sources of healthy fats. Other healthy fats containing foods are Avocados and Almonds.

Brain implants allow paralysed man to feed himself A paralysed man has been able to feed himself by using his thoughts to send messages from implants in his brain to ones in his arm. Bill Kochevar, who was paralysed in a cycling accident, said he was "wowed" to regain control of his right arm. Researchers say this is the first time anyone has been able to restore brain-controlled reaching and grasping in a person with complete paralysis. But the technology is a long way from being used outside the lab."I think it's pretty cool I get to be the first one

in the world to do it," said Bill, who was 53 when he took part in the study. He had been paralysed for eight years after he cycled into the back of a mail van while taking part in a 150-mile bike ride and couldn't move his body from the shoulders down. For the study, he had surgery to place sensors in the motor cortex area of his brain, the area responsible for hand movement. He then spent four months using the sensors to com-

mand movements of a three-dimensional virtual arm. After this, he had 36 electrodes implanted in his arm and hand to electrically stimulate his hand, elbow and shoulder muscles. The researchers used a decoder to translate his brain signals into commands for the electrodes in his arm. He was then able to intuitively command his arm to move. Other studies have also seen participants controlling robotic arms using their brain signals.

Torrevieja firefighters were dispatched to Pilar de la Horadada on Sunday, but instead of a roaring blaze, they had to deal with a swarm of bees discovered in a tree on Calle

Benidorm. The wet winter and mild temperatures have led to flowers blooming earlier this year, with a big rise in the number of swarms reported across Alicante

Province, with fire fighters also attending calls to remove one from a car wing-mirror in Elche, and even a pair of trousers that were drying out on a terrace.

Mini Guide To Culture In Seville

Plaza de España Home to Moorish monuments, fine art, flamenco, endless festivals and the world’s largest Gothic cathedral, Seville is a city of passion where matadors and cantadors still make their mark. Architecture ‘We’re going to construct a church so large, future generations will think we were mad,’ declared Seville’s canon in 1402 at the start of one of the most grandiose building projects in medieval history. Gothic masterpiece Catedral de Sevilla was completed in 1506, retaining La Giralda, the pretty minaret of the mosque that originally stood on the site (Avenida de la Constitución). Residence of generations of kings and caliphs, the Alcázar de Sevilla was originally founded as a fort for the Cordoban governors of Seville in 913. It has been expanded and rebuilt over the following 11 centuries but is an identikit of Mudéjar architecture. It features Pedro I of Castilla’s Mudéjar Palace, built in ‘perishable’ wood, ceramics and plaster, obedient to the Quran’s prohibition against ‘eternal’ structures (Patio de Banderas). Seville’s giant ‘flying waffle’ has injected a dose of modernism into the city’s traditional core, sparking predictable controversy. Designed by German architect Jürgen Mayer H, the Metropol Parasol opened in March 2011 and claims to be the largest wooden building in the world. Roman ruins discovered during the building’s conception have been cleverly incorporated into the foundations at the Museo Antiquarium (Plaza de la Encarnación). Museums and galleries Housed in a former convent, Seville’s Museo de Bellas Artes portrays the city’s leading role in Spain’s 17th-century golden age. The most visually stunning room is that of the convent church, which is hung with paintings by masters of Sevillano baroque, including Murillo’s Inmaculada Concepción Grande (Plaza del Museo, 9) Founded in 1399, Conjunto Monumental de la Cartuja is today the home of the superb Andalucian Contemporary Art Centre, which has a collection of local modern art and frequent temporary exhibitions. The monastery was a favourite lodging place of Columbus, and in 1839 the complex was turned into a porcelain factory, which explains the kilns that stand incongruously by the buildings (Avenida Américo Vespucio, 2). Seville’s futuristic El Pabellón de la Navegación may have been overshadowed by the Metropol Parasol but this modern museum and exhibition space, which opened in

January 2012, is just as thought-provoking. Its permanent collection is split into four parts – shipboard life, mariners, historical views of Seville and navigation (Camino de los Descrubimientos, 2; 10am–7.30pm Tue–Sat, 10am–3pm Sun). Flamenco The brainchild of Sevillana flamenco dancer Cristina Hoyos, Museo del Baile Flamenco showcases photos, sketches and paintings of contemporary flamenco greats and a collection of dresses and shawls. There are regular classes, workshops and concerts (Calle Manuel Rojas Marcos, 3; 9am–6pm Nov– Mar, 9am–7pm Apr–Oct). Casa de la Memoria de Al-Andalus, a flamenco tablao (a place that stages professional flamenco shows) in Santa Cruz, is the most intimate and authentic nightly flamenco show outside the Museo del Baile Flamenco, and offers a wide variety of flamenco styles in a courtyard of shifting shadows. Space is limited to 100 so reserve in advance (Calle Ximénez de Enciso, 28; 7.30pm and 9pm). If you can squeeze in past the foreboding form of Anselma – a celebrated Triana flamenco dancer – at the door, you’ll soon realise that anything can happen in here. Casa Anselma is the antithesis of a tourist flamenco tablao, with cheek-to-jowl crowds, no amplification and spontaneous outbreaks of dancing. There’s no sign, just a doorway embellished with tiles (Calle Pagés del Corro, 49; 12am–late Mon–Sat). Transport Vueling and Iberia fly direct to Seville from Alicante, (from 120€). Aeropuerto San Pablo is four miles from the city centre: Los Amarillos runs buses from the airport, about 4€,, while a taxi costs about 25€. Seville is easy to walk around, while the SeVici bike hire scheme has made bike lanes as ubiquitous as pavements. Where to stay Round the corner from the Basílica de la Macarena, Hotel San Gil adheres to the Moorish concept of keeping the beauty within: while plain on the outside, the inner reception and courtyard are lovely. There’s also a pool and pretty gardens (Calle Parras, 28; from £80). Situated in the old Jewish quarter of Barrio de Santa Cruz, Hotel Amadeus is an elegant hotel run by a musical family – the various instruments dotted around are available for guests to use (Calle Farnesio, 6; about 120€). Hotel Casa 1800 puts service and friendliness on par with its plush new interior. Rooms have wood floors and hand-carved furniture, and highlights include the free afternoon merienda, or light meal (Calle Rodrigo Caro, 6; from 160€).

Easter has come, and so have its many representations. Palm Sunday marks the beginning of these festivities, which acquire a heightened significance in Elx owing to its beauty as well as the high levels of attendance to the main event. During this day a palm procession is held during which thousands of locals parade down the main streets of the town, accompanying the throne of the Triumphant Jesus, carrying the white palms produced by local craftsmen and grown in the Elx palm grove. This celebration, which is held on the Sunday prior to Resurrection Sunday, was declared an International Tourist Asset in 1997, and it stands out due to its dazzling pageantry and massive throngs. The Blessing of the Palms is accompanied by the custom of hanging the blessed palms from balconies, a tradition that was imported from the East during the Middle Ages, and which still endures in Elx as a protective symbol for homes. During the days prior to Palm Sunday, the beautiful White Palm Market is set up in marketplaces throughout the city. Elx is one of the most important cities in the Region of Valencia, and one of the few places with more than one acknowledged World Heritage Sites: the Palmeral (palm grove) and its traditional Mystery Plays. Such tradition and beauty, however, is far from being isolated. TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

I wasn’t sure what to expect from BBC 1’s Friday night dramatisation of Evelyn Waugh’s novel Decline and Fall, especially since I’ve never read the book. I knew there was some likely humour, but it was better than that, as there were some great laughs to be had in this tale of young Oxford student Paul Pennyfeather ( Jack Whitehall) being sent down, and forced to become a teacher at a private Welsh school that is punching way above its status. The irony is that comedian Whitehall plays it absolutely straight with some wonderful expressions of disbelief, and again shows his very good talents as an actor. The rest of the cast is a fun collection of bizarre characters that reminded me of my grammer school days, with drunken teachers and a headmaster full of snobbery, plus racism thrown in for good measure. We don’t normally see actors of the calibre of David Suchet and Douglas Hodge doing comedy, and you could tell that

A Surprising Treat

they loved doing something different. The plot thickens tonight as Pennyfeather becomes a summer tutor for the son of a wealthy benefactor played by Eva Longoria in her best role since the much-missed Desperate Housewives. Decline and Fall is one of the surprises of the year, and I’m looking forward to the next two episodes. Spin-off and follow-up shows always have the high risk of bombing, but the American networks like to go for it with the usual mixed results. A clutch have suddenly appeared and at least one is absolutely top class, namely the follow up to The Good Wife called The Good Fight which has started on More Four. The Good Wife was a top draw legal/political drama-comedy, and the spin-off centres on one of the best characters, Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) who finds herself having to scrap her retirement from the law after being ripped off by a ponzi scheme. She’s forced to join a small law firm after her name becomes poison after

recommending the scheme to clients, and she takes under her wing the daughter of the crooked ponzi boss. All the old elements of The Good Wife are there with a sharp script, though surprisingly the it was a bit comedy-light in the opener, though I’m sure that will change. Also as this is a now a subscription show in the States(and renewed halfway through the run for next year), it came as a shock for Diane to be uttering four-letter profanities! I loved it though, and one or two other Good Wife favourite characters will be making an appearance. I wasn’t impressed though with another spin-off, The Blacklist:-Redemption, which is an eight-week show airing on Sky One, featuring the character of Tom Keen (Ryan Eggold) trying to get to the bottom of the truth concerning his parents. Keen joins a black ops team run by his mother(Famke Janssen), who doesn’t know that Tom is his son. The first episode was pretty routine, and I found it hard to relate to the characters, and the

black humour (led by James Spader) in the original Blacklist was missing. Having said that, I’m told things get a lot better, but I’d rather return to the Blacklistproper, especially as we were left with the cliffhanger of Red trying to find who and why a hit was taken out on him. The king of US spin-offs is Dick Wolf, creator of Law and Order, which spawned four different shows, one of which in the shape of SVU is still going strong(and still great). Wolf now has a fourth Chicago show which has premiered on the UK

Universal Channel, with Chicago Justice, which 20odd years later has taken us back to the start as it is just Law and Order under another name. There’s nothing wrong with that as I love courtroom dramas, but the only criticism is that it dovetails in with Wolf’s other Chicago shows and because they are spread over three different UK channels (with two of the latest seasons still to air), it means the impact is lessened of the crossover stories, which is a shame. Can’t the Universal channel (owned by NBC who air all

the Chicago shows in the States) just buy the rights to whole lot? A quick word on The Walking Dead finale on FOX UK this week. It had me gripped, sad, and cheering as all of the emotional buttons were pressed, and I can’t wait until the autumn for it to continue. I also was moved by Tuesday’s finale of This Is Us on Channel Four, as we have to wait till season two to see how Jack actually died. Why UK viewers have ignored this poignant yet funny drama is a mystery to me.

Tuesday Bex decides to go out busking with help from Shakil – and even Martin is supportive once she manages to talk him round. Unfortunately, Madison and Alexandra are continuing to make their presence felt and they can’t resist taunting Bex.

Win FREE Tickets to Terra Natura and Aqua Natura in Benidorm

Friday 7th April 2017 For the Two weeks of Easter, TKO Radio we will be giving away combined tickets for both the Terra Natura animal park and the Aqua Natura water park in Benidorm. Terra Natura Animal Parks lets visitors make contact with animals with barriers invisible to the human eye. Many species can be viewed, including elephants, tigers, monkeys, lions, African buffalo, and rhinos. The 320,000 square metres (79 acres) of Terra Natura Benidorm are divided into four zones or areas: Pangea (the park entrance area), America, Asia and Europe. Between the areas visitors can see about 1500 animals representing 200 species. Aqua Natura Benidorm is a 40,000-square-metre (10-acre) water park with an sea lion show where people can enjoy a show and even swim with sea lions, and a large swimming pool area with over 1 kilometre (3,300 ft) of flumes and slides. Each of the combined tickets are worth 39€, allowing acces to both areas, although the water park is only open for the warmer months, opening its doors from May to October. That doesn´t prevent you from visiting the animal park however, including over the Easter holidays, and enjoying a unique experience as you are transported into different parts of the world. For your chance to win these tickets, all you have to do is listen to TKO Radio, on 90.8 or 91.9FM, or you can visit the website, tko.fm, for more information, including links to both parks. If you´re not lucky enough to win, don´t worry, you can pick up a discount voucher every week in The Courier.

ADVICE: Jack wanted to know why his printer wasn’t work- ADVICE: Margaret wanted to know how to remove email ing even though he could scan addresses from Facebook

I enjoy your computer advice immensely, but as I fast approach my 80th The problems seem to become harder to solve. My Epson Stylus SX110 scans ok as long as I alter the USB inlet from the scanner to the computer from time to time, but the printer refuses to work despite uninstalling, new drives, and it states that it is fine. I would greatly appreciate any advice you could give me to get the machine working. Thank you, Jack, currently in the wilds of the French south west.

Hi Margaret, firstly, well done! Keeping your online services (like Facebook) up to date with your current email address is a very good thing to do, it means that if you have problems with your account, you will have the correct email address registered to help you sort it out. In order to update the email addresses that you have registered with Facebook you should go to your Facebook page on a computer, click your Facebook name (at the top, next to the Home button) and then click “update info” from your profile picture. Finally click “contact and basic info” from the menu bar on the left and from here you can edit your email addresses.

Hi Jack, I’m afraid you haven’t given me much to go on here mate, if you’re saying that the printer does not function at all (i.e. no sound, no paper coming out) then I would suggest that its physically faulty in some way. If, however, you are saying that the printer goes through the motions of printing and a blank page comes out then the problem is almost certainly related to your inks and they probably need their heads cleaned. The fact that you are able to scan does tell us that the problem is not a connection issue of course.I hope that helps you track down the problem.

Hi Richard. Would be grateful for some advice/help please. On my Facebook account, I have some old email addresses which are defunct and want to delete them but have been unable to do so. Any suggestions please would be most welcome. Regards Margaret

GKN Driveline wins Automotive News PACE award GKN Driveline has been presented with an Automotive News PACE Innovation Award for the integrated co-axial eAxle on the Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine. The Automotive News PACE Awards, bestowed annually for more than 20 years, are acknowledged around the world as the most prestigious industry recognition for automotive supplier innovation. Designed to minimise packaging and maximise performance, the co-axial eAxle on the Volvo XC90 sets new standards in eDrive sophistication. Developed to fit in the same space as the Rear Drive Module on the XC90 AWD driveline, the eAxle solution gives Volvo the ultimate flexibility to meet the customer demand mix between all versions of the XC90 driveline. The XC90’s eAxle delivers nominal output torque of 2400Nm in a package that measures 263mm x 310mm x 293mm, and weighs just 15kg. The small footprint of this higher output new eAxle saves space, making integration into global vehicle platforms simpler while also enhancing driveability. The technology has also launched on the Volvo S90

and will feature on other vehicles across the automaker’s ‘Scalable Product Architecture’ platform, as well as on future applications with other manufacturers. GKN Driveline Senior Vice President Sales, Marketing and Programme Management, Jim Voeffray, collected the prize at the Automotive News PACE Awards in Detroit yesterday evening. He said: “GKN has an unmatched history in the development of leading electric driveline technologies and we are pleased that PACE has recognised this particularly sophisticated eAxle system. It is testament to the hard work of our talented engineering teams that we can continue to improve flexibility for our customers and this award

further recognizes GKN as an innovation leader and partner to the industry. “I’d like to thank Volvo for its co-operation in bringing this innovation to the market, further strengthening our relationship with this company.” The award continues GKN’s strong history of success with PACE. It has won PACE awards for the previous two years; first with the two-speed eAxle on the BMW i8 and last year with the VL3 sideshaft system on the BMW 7 Series. In addition, GKN won a Partnership Award in 2016 for its work with Ford on the Focus RS, whilst it has also been named a finalist for the Twinster all-wheel drive system on the Range Rover Evoque and the disconnecting all-wheel drive system on the Jeep Renegade.

Lexi’s TV Trial Controversy hit the golf course last weekend, all because of a television viewer spotting a mistake. American Lexi Thompson was left in tears after being handed a four-stroke penalty while leading the final round of the first major of the season – the ANA Inspiration at Rancho Mirage in California-and then losing a play-off to Ryu So-yeon. She incorrectly replaced a marked ball in Saturday's third round - a TV viewer spotted the offence and told officials. Thompson was leading the ANA Inspiration by two shots when told of the penalty after her 12th hole. She birdied the 18th to force a play-off which Ryu won at the first hole. Thompson, 22, had missed a 20-foot eagle putt on the last that would have given her a sensational victory at Mission Hills in California. Thompson appeared to put a marker at the side of her ball on the 17th green before lifting it and replacing in front of the marker prior to a putt of less than two feet. The LPGA said she "breached Rule 20-7c (Playing From Wrong Place), and received a two-stroke penalty. She incurred an additional two-stroke penalty under Rule 6-6d for returning an incorrect scorecard in round three." Her five-under-par third-round 67 was changed to a 71. "Is this a joke?" Thompson said after being informed by a rules official, before making birdies on three of the last six holes to force the play-off. Rickie Fowler said this week that television viewers affecting golf tournaments is “not making the game look very good at all”. "There's no question it should be ended," Fowler said of spectators being able to alert officials of breaches. "I don't think you could find one player that would say otherwise." Speaking in the build-up to this week's Masters in Augusta, the former world number four said he had sympathy for Thompson and that things need to change. "There shouldn't be any outside contact, whether it's email or phone calls, whatsoever," he said.

Rugby Boost

Bilbao has been chosen to host next season's European Champions Cup and Challenge Cup finals. It is the first time the games will be staged outside traditional rugby union countries, with Spain's national team 18th in the world rankings. The finals will be played at the San Mames Stadium, home of La Liga football side Athletic Bilbao. Newcastle United's St James' Park ground will host both European finals in the 2018-19 campaign. Both cities will also stage

the final of the European Continental Shield, a feeder competition for the Challenge Cup aimed at clubs from the likes of Russia, Spain, Germany and Belgium. "Bilbao is an excellent destination which breaks new ground for our tournaments and we see this as a big step in the expansion of our sport across the continent," said European Professional Club Rugby chairman Simon Halliday. This year's Challenge Cup and Champions Cup finals take place at Murrayfield in Scotland on 12 and 13 May.

LAST GASP LEWIS

CD TORREVIEJA 1 CF TORRE LEVANTE 0 An injury time winner from substitute Lewis Allen gave his side another precious victory to keep them out of the relegation zone, with two matches to come in five days. Consigned to the bench, Lewis Allen had to watch and suffer as his colleagues battled with every fibre of their being to contain a Torre Levante outfit that still retained hopes of sneaking into the top four. He had been unwell late in the week and the manager decided not to risk him from the off. However, with 55 minutes played, Lewis was introduced and proved to be the deciding factor. The first half was fairly equal with strong defences keen to keep their respective slates clean. Reyes almost made a breakthrough midway through the period but somehow Calzado ran him down and slide-tackled the ball off his toe to concede a corner. Former Torry favourite Ruben Suarez was placing the corners and free kicks into the danger area, but that was all he managed, as Dani Salazar was commissioned to mark him with Dani splendid in executing this plan to perfection. Borja Mir and Molina were charged with the goal getting, along with the talent that is Pastor and all three worked hard to find spaces and gaps in a well-

drilled Levante defence that made few mistakes. One casual back pass though was seized upon by Borja Mir who clashed with the spritely Kilian in the Torre Levante goal, as both made it to the ball at the same time. Another well-crafted move from Tory allowed Molina a crack on goal but he scuffed his shot wide of the target, to groans around the Nelson Mandela stadium. Once Lewis Allen took to the field, Torry stepped up a notch. The pace quickened, passes were sharper and inch by inch the home side began to take the match by the scruff of the neck. Vicente Boix delivered a fine cross which Molina failed to make the most of, and then Lewis burst through the midfield and laid on a terrific pass for Borja Mir. The striker placed his shot well, only to see the outstretched legs of keeper Kilian deflect the ball away. At the other end, Torre Levante players claimed a penalty, but the referee was adamant that the ball had struck the arm and no intentional handball was considered. As the game drew to a close, Torry would not give up. They continued to keep the tempo high and put Torre Levante under pressure, right to the final whistle. A long cross-field

ball asked Pastor to sprint down the right flank, which he did willingly. He controlled the ball and then cut back, intending to make space to find a right foot strike on target. Instead, he recognised that Lewis Allen had joined him and he slid the ball sweetly into the path of the young Brit. Lewis had no need to check where the goalposts where, since that was already ingrained in his mind's eye. He pulled back his lethal left foot and propelled the ball into the net before Kilian could get close to it. It was a fitting and fabulous end to a tense and absorbing contest, one that Torry deserved to win. That is now five victories from their last seven matches, but six more remain and that level of form will need to be maintained. Bunol won also and stay locked on 32 points with Torry, both now with Almazora in their sights, after their 2-0 defeat in Muro. In fact, Torry host Almazora on Thursday April 13th in a 5.30 pm kick-off, in what may well prove to be a relegation decider. However, this Sunday though sees the team make the short trip to Elche Ilicitano for a 6pm start at the first team stadium, straight after the seniors have entertained Sevilla (see page 46). Kick off time 6.30pm.

Local Review

It was a bad weekend for CD Almoradi as all they could do was sit and watch their relegation rivals in the Valencian regional third division get vital wins on a Sunday that the fixture list deemed that would have no match. CD Torrevieja (see left) and Bunol both won, which means Almoradi are now six points behind them and now return to play this Sunday in a home clash with promotion-chasing Novelda, followed by a tough trip to Ontinyent. They say that football is a funny old game, and the old trick of sacking the manager has rekindled Orihuela’s chances of a play-off berth after a shock one-nil victory at runaway leaders Olimpic. Coach José Manuel Roca was sacked after Orihuela could only draw against

doomed Segorbe, with the veteran Machuca put in charge, and he saw Antonio get the one goal of the match in the 62nd minute amidst great celebrations (pictured) to stun the Olimpic fans, who had seen their team lose just once all season! Orihuela now have a five point gap to make up, and like Almoradi, have to sit and wait as it’s their turn to be out of the action this weekend. Elsewhere Crevillente got a decent nil-nil result at Castellon, and can do both Torrevieja and Almoradi a massive favour by beating Bunol this weekend, whilst Elche Ilicitano entertain Torrevieja on their back of their two-one win at Alzira CD Thader appear to have breathed new life into their Preferente group four campaign, with two straight

wins as they beat UD Altea one-nil at Rojales on Sunday, with Noe the scorer in the 51st minute. Thader take on Callosa this weekend, and lie in fourth place, just two points behind thirdplaced Hercules. Valencia segunda regional group 16 leaders, CD Montesinos, return to action after a blank weekend, as they entertain fifth-placed CF Popular Orihuela Deportivo, with a 5.30 pm kick-off. Monte are five points clear of Callosa Deportiva, who also did not play last weekend, and they will keep an eye out on the result from their match away to RP Orihuela who went down 2-1 at second-bottom Sporting Orihuela. Third-placed Benijofar have a potentially difficult match to come at Grupo Caliche.

It’s A Fix!

The National Police have detained the coach of an Alicante Province football side for alleged match-fixing. The Eldense coach Filippo Vito di Pierro (pictured), who is Italian, was arrested on Monday in Elda, after his team lost a third-division match, 12nil, to Barcelona B last weekend. The man who served as the club’s general director and represented the group of Italian investors that recently partnered with Eldense, Nobile Capuani, also was detained. Authorities took them into custody after interrogating some Eldense players after a complaint made by the club’s president. They have denied any wrongdoing. Eldense temporarily ceased their sporting activities on Sunday, a day after the defeat sealed their relegation. The team also ended their contract with the group of Italian investors. The 12-0 defeat equalled a record for Spain’s third division. Extremadura routed Portuense by the same score in 1993. The Eldense striker Cheikh Saad said that

four team mates were involved in the scheme, including some who were seen in tears and were being consoled by Barcelona players after the final whistle. Saad said he found out that the arrangement was for the score to be 8-0 at half time and 12-0 at the end. He did not name the team mates. “In the end, everything will be revealed,” Saad said, adding that he refused to play and stayed on the bench. David Aguilar, the Eldense club president, said that a player’s agent told him the match had been fixed in connection with online betting. He said he had noticed unusual decisions made by the Italian coach recently, including the use of players who had not been playing regularly. Eldense have six matches left this season. Barcelona B leads their regional group of the third division. Eldense have played three successive seasons in the third division. The club, founded in 1921, were in the second division for five consecutive seasons in the late 1950s and early 60s.

Routine Victory

Sunday Stroll

Elche’s Late Agony CORDOBA 1 ELCHE 0

BARCELONA 4 GRANADA 1

Real Madrid saw off Alaves to keep their lead at the top of La Liga with a comfortable win at the Bernabeu stadium on Sunday. Karim Benzema opened the scoring after 31 minutes with a powerful left-footed strike into the top left-hand corner. Isco added a second in the 84th minute, making a perfectly timed run down the right before beating Fernando Pacheco at his near post with a brilliant strike. Nacho put the game to bed just four minutes later with his first league goal of the season when he capitalised on a rebound from close range. Next to come for Real was last night’s match at struggling Leganes (report below).

Barcelona sank 10-man Granada to remain two points behind Real Madrid on Sunday. Luis Suarez opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time before Granada substitute Jeremie Boga equalised in the 50th minute, but Barca regained the lead and went on to see off the hosts comfortably. Paco Alcacer netted the second for Luis Enrique's men in the 64th minute and Granada were unable to find a way back into the game as an own goal from Matthieu Saunier seven minutes from time followed Uche Henry Agbo's sending-off just a minute previous. A simple stoppage-time tap-in from Neymar rounded off a dominant second half for Barca, which them in the right mood for last night’s showdown with fourth-placed Sevilla, who were surprisingly held at home to a nil-nil score by relegation candidates Sporting Gijon.

Morata Triple

Brilliant Barca

REAL MADRID 3 ALAVES 0

In the space of just a couple of weeks, two straight defeats have blown out any faint chance of Elche making a grab for a Segunda division play-off slot, and they are now embroiled in an unexpected relegation battle. Defeat in Cordoba on Sunday means that they are just three points above the drop-zone, and though the Ilicitanos did not deserve to lose this match, they really didn’t set the world alight either, and were sucker-punched towards the end. It was all rather pedestrian fare from two mediocre sides, with Cordoba one of the worst looking teams that Elche had played all season. The Ilicitanos had a fair bit of the ball in the first half, but they just didn’t have a clue what to do with it. Borja Valle again looked like the best of the bunch and Nino gave everything he could on his own up front, but there was little to trouble Cordoba keeper, Kieszek. Elche dominated a large portion of the second half with shots from Nino and Pedro, with the Ilicitanos coming closest when a Borja Valle header the post with Kieszek well and truly beaten. It genuinely seemed a matter of time before Elche would score against a poor Cordoba side, but it all turned to despair with eight minutes remaining, when Elche’s defenders were inept in dealing with a corner, and the ball fell to veteran Cordova defender Héctor Rodas scored with a bicycle kick that left the visitors shattered. Afterwards Elche coach, Alberto Toril moaned that the result just wasn’t fair on his side, but had little to say about his fragile defence, as supporters have now seen their side fall into a relegation dog-fight. The Ilicitanos now entertain Sevilla’s second team this Sunday afternoon with a 3.00 pm kick-off at the Manuel Martinez Valero stadium.

Plenty Of Options

LEGANES 2 REAL MADRID 4

BARCELONA 3 SEVILLA 0

Alvaro Morata scored a hat-trick as Real Madrid beat struggling Leganes to keep their two point lead over Barcelona at the top of La Liga, with a game in hand. James Rodriguez put Real ahead with a tap in before a Morata header and powerful strike made it 3-0. Leganes responded as Gabriel's close-range finish and a Luciano strike reduced the deficit to one. But a Morata header deflected in off Leganes captain Martin Mantovani to seal victory for Real. Real now have a big clash to look forward to tomorrow afternoon as they entertain city rivals in the shape of third-place Atletico Madrid.

Lionel Messi scored twice as Barcelona brushed aside Sevilla to keep up the pressure on Real Madrid in the La Liga title race. The hosts were in control from start to finish and opened the scoring through Luis Suarez's overhead volley. Messi swept in a quick second from Suarez's cutback before making it 3-0 with a fierce volley. Sevilla were reduced to 10 men in the 90th minute when Vitolo was sent for a second booking after a foul on Neymar. Substitute Pablo Sarabia had Sevilla's two best chances with powerful long-range drives in the second half but the visitors never really looked like scoring. Barcelona’s next match is away to Malaga tomorrow night.

Real Madrid’s James Rodriguez might be making a shock move to rivals Barcelona, after having started just a handful of games under coach Zinedine Zidane this season. The Colombian looks destined to leave in the summer, and local TV station El Chirnguito are making a claim that the 25year-old midfielder is being “looked at” by Barca. Meanwhile other reports are suggesting that Rodriguez may be heading to Italy to play for Juventus, who are said to have tabled a definite offer. A number of Premier League clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United are also said to be interested in signing him.

Luis Rests

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique has revealed he will take a year-long sabbatical from football at the end of the season. The 46-year-old, who announced last month that he would be leaving the club, said he wants to take a break due to "tiredness". "If I'm leaving Barcelona, my home, where I have a great relationship with the club and the players, it's purely for tiredness”, said Enrique. "It will take a year to recover, but now what's left to do is to end the season with all our objectives achieved," he added.

Isco Backed

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has expressed his desire to see Isco sign a new deal with the club. The 24-year-old Spanish international has been in and out of the Real first XI. He will have one year left on his contract this summer, and has been linked with a move away. "I want him to renew. He is an important player”, said Zidane. "He wants to stay here, to play here. When Isco plays, he does well. But we have 24 players, and they are all important."

Uncertain Keeper

Madrid Switch

Real Madrid is set to snatch highly-rated leftback Theo Hernandez from city rivals Atletico Madrid by paying the buyout clause in his contract, according to the Marca newspaper. French youth international Hernandez, 19, has impressed during a loan spell with Alaves this season. Marca claim that Real Madrid have reached an agreement with Hernandez to pay his 24 million euro buyout clause and that we would sign for the club in the summer on a six-year contract. The deal would break a gentleman's agreement between the clubs not to sign players from their rivals since Real president Florentino Perez began the first of his two spells in charge in 2000. Former Argentina winger Santiago Solari was the last player to cross the Madrid divide when he joined Real 17 years ago. Should Hernandez move, he could be facing off in the Madrid derby for years to come against his older brother, Lucas Hernandez, 21, who has featured regularly for Atletico this season. And by coincidence, Real and Atletico renew their rivalry at the Santiago Bernabeu tomorrow.

Don’t Delay

Former Barcelona midfielder, Xavi Hernandez (pictured), has urged the La Liga champions to renew Lionel Messi’s contract with Lionel Messi as soon as possible. Messi’s deal with Barcelona will come to an end by next season, but no arrangement has been made over a renewal. Xavie told the Catalan TV3 channel that he is sure of Messi’s renewal with Barcelona, because “the club needs Messi, but Messi also needs Barcelona”. He added that he has already warned the club to not keep its key star on hold for too long. “It would be a historical mistake for Barcelona not to renew Messi’s contract,” adding that Leo is the best player in history,” Hernandez added. “The importance of this player will become once he retires.”

Who’s The Boss?

Marc-Andre ter Stegen admits he is unsure of his future at Barcelona amid reported interest from Manchester City. Pep Guardiola chased the 24-year-old Germany goalkeeper last summer before signing his then Barca team-mate Claudio Bravo instead, and City are reportedly discussing a new move for Ter Stegen in the next transfer window. La Vanguardia have asked Ter Stegen about City's interest, and if he sees himself staying at Barcelona for several more years, and he said: "I don't know.” "I try to do the best for me and for the team. Give my best and improve. You never know what comes after," said Ter Stegen. "I live in the moment, and that is what is most important. I am happy here with my colleagues and friends and I hope to win many more trophies. That is the goal." Ter Stegen, who joined Barca in 2014 from Borussia Moenchengladbach, is under contract with Barca until June 2019 and is in talks over a new deal at the Camp Nou.

Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo has threatened to leave the club if a laundry list of demands is not accepted by club president Florentino Perez, according to a report in Diario Gol. The newspaper says that Ronaldo has a big influence on Perez and even can veto transfers, with a claim that he doesn’t want either Eden Hazard or Antoine Griezmann to sign in case they became bigger stars than he is! Ronaldo’s list of demands includes a new goalkeeper to replace Keylor Navas, with David De Gea or Thibaut Courtois the top two choices. He allegedly no longer wants to play alongside Karim Benzema and would prefer a more direct No 9, and has personally given approval to moves for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Paulo Dybala, Moussa Dembele or Kylian Mbappe.

KYLE’S FIRST

Kyle Edmund will lead Great Britain's bid for the Davis Cup semi-finals this afternoon when he takes on Lucas Pouille in the opening singles rubber on the indoor clay of Rouen. Edmund is ranked 30 places below world number 17 Pouille, but won their only previous encounter in Brisbane earlier this season after the Frenchman retired in the second set. The second rubber will see Dan Evans play Jeremy Chardy.

BRAZIL BACK

Five-time world champions Brazil have returned to the top of the FIFA world football rankings for the first time in seven years. Wales dropped one place to 13th, England stay in 14th, and Scotland moved up eight spots to 59th. Northern Ireland have climbed nine places up to joint 26th level with the Republic of Ireland, who fell by two places.

THEY’RE OFF!

Last year's runner-up The Last Samuri (pictured left in 2016) heads the line-up after a final field of 40 runners was named for tomorrow’s Grand National at Aintree (6.15 pm, live on ITV). Pendra was the only withdrawal on Thursday, leaving Doctor Harper as the last horse to make the cut. Vieux Lion Rouge and Definitly Red are the bookmakers' favourites, at about 10-1, for the famous race. Four reserves are on standby should any runner pull out before 2.00 pm this Friday lunchtime. Coverage of the National, over 30 fences and more than four and a quarter miles, is said to be followed by 600 million people worldwide. The race is again due to start at 6.15 pm Spanish time, having been put back an hour by organisers last year in an effort to further increase the audience. The National is a handicap chase, with each runner allotted a different weight to carry by the official handicapper Phil Smith. With 11st 10lb, The Last Samuri will bid to become the first top-weight to triumph since the legendary Red Rum in 1974.

CONTE’S TARGET

Despite last weekend’s Palace slip-up, Chelsea are still in the driving seat for Premier League glory, especially after Wednesday’s win over Manchester City, writes ALEX TRELINSKI. Blues boss Antonio Conte is leaving nothing to chance and has told his team that they need six wins out of their last eight matches to get the title. Conte has done a great job at the Bridge, and a trip to Bournemouth tomorrow afternoon will not be easy as Eddie Howe’s side fight all the way, which Liverpool fans would vouch for after Wednesday night. Meanwhile, Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is continuing to rev up his players by saying, and with some justification, that they are capable of winning all their remaining games and will fight to the end. They have the Saturday early kick-off slot to close the gap on Chelsea for at least a few hours, when they entertain multi-national Watford. Towards the bottom, it shows what just a couple of matches can bring, with two wins on the bounce taking Hull out of the relegation zone, but they go to Manchester City tomorrow, whilst Swansea who have suprisingly returned to the bottom three, are away for a big one at West Ham, who are smelling trouble again having lost their last five matches.
