A union leader has claimed that all flights involving the budget airline will be affected. The strike is scheduled to run from this Good Friday (April 14th) through to the end of Monday, with 230 employees who work for Lesma Handling taking the action over a dispute to do with contracts, working conditions, and pay rates. Two British nationals were arrested for drunk and reckless driving after being thrown out of a Torrevieja night club. The incident happened early last Saturday morning after three people were evicted from the Velice club on the city's Casagrande industrial estate, and got into a car. Two of the three were described by authorities as British, who said that they drove the car dangerously including onto the pavement

and the outside area of the club threatening the lives of by-standers. Local police and Guardia Civil officers managed to stop the vehicle after the occupants tried to tricky them, as a non-driver switched places with the driver during a chase. The original driver was found to be four times over the alcohol limit. No further details about the trio like their ages or sex were provided by the authorities.

Arm Of The Law

The Guardia Civil have launched a hunt for an arsonist who started a blaze in the La Mata area of Torrevieja last Friday evening. The fire started in

some trees in the Molino del Agua natural park not far from La Mata beach, which was the location of a similar incident in 2013. Matches and bottles of

identification documents, followed by people wanted on international or Spanish arrest warrants. That included a 35-yearold Algerian man who was wanted on robbery charges, after stealing from tourists who were picking up their hire cars at the airport.

This week's Semana Santa parades in Torrevieja, including the Good Friday procession, involving the British-led International Cofradia, will have to resort to using wheels to carry the Paso of Jesus in the Garden of Olives through the city streets as the Cofradia do not have enough members. Despite appeals earlier this year, the Cofradia (pictured previously) was only able to get 50 of the bare minimum number of 85 men needed to carry the Paso,

and they are now having to push the Paso during the processions rather than carrying it on their shoulders. The final decision was taken last week during rehearsals, with the group returning to using wheels which was the position of the Cofradia from when it was founded in 1984 until man power was used for the first time in 2004. A combination of old age and members returning to the UK has led to the current predicament for the International Cofradia.

It's set to be a sell-out for the Easter holiday season for hotel bookings in the Mar Menor region, according to María del Mar Martínez of the Costa Calida Tourist Accommodation Association. She says that occupancy rates for the holiday stood at 95 percent reservations at the start of the week, and with domestic tourists set to pick up the rest of the rooms this weekend, a bumper 2017 season is expected for her group's members.

Robbers Caught

A hi-tech gang that used electronic gear to rob cars across Alicante Province has been broken up by the National Police, with Russian and Ukrainian nationals arrested in the Santa Pola area. The operation against the crooks, aged between their mid-twenties and mid-fifties, started last September, after multiple reports of property being

The Hydrographic Confederation of Segura (CHS) is investigating a spillage of waste and debris that has partially blocked the channel of the river Seco for the last two months in the Pilar de la Horadada area. Their probe could result in legal action being taken. The environment group, the Friends of Sierra Escalona (ASE) had already filed a complaint about the dumping which they say has led to the blockage at Cueva Serrana.

stolen from cars, including incidents in Torrevieja. The crooks used devices to crack electronic codes to open up the cars, often outside the owner's home, and in most cases it was not obvious that the cars had been broken into. Gang members would be on the look-out in case people appeared and they would be in constant touch with their colleagues via

mobile phones as they were carrying out the break-in. Money and valuables were then lifted from the cars, as well as house keys, with the crooks then using them to enter the property. A couple of guns and ammunition were recovered by the National Police during their house raids in Santa Pola.

Sniffed Out

An Alicante police dog, who is a member of the local police drug unit, sniffed out a 29-year old Moroccan drug dealer who was travelling with a kilo of hashish that was destined for Ibiza. Residents in the Callosa de Segura area have been warned about people pretending to be Cruz Roja volunteers, after vests and equipment were stolen from the Cruz Roja building in the town. Council officials are

worried that the thieves may go round knocking on local doors claiming to be fundraising for good causes, and emphasised the need for home owners to ask for official identification papers and badges.

The dog had a sniff around the passenger aisle of the bus that had just come in to Alicante bus station from Malaga, and took a shine to the Moroccan. who the dog seemingly thought had a

smell of drugs about him. Police then asked for his suitcase to be lifted out of the hold, and discovered the drugs wrapped in 100 small packs, they think were ready for sale on the party island.

Cutting Corners

Over a thousand Portuguese tudents caused tens of thousands of euro in damages after they trashed a Costa del Sol hotel. A local police officer in Torremolinos said officers had to be called in on several occasions last weekend to the Hotel Pueblo Camino Real, as a group of about 1,200 Portuguese students aged between 14 and 17 years caused damage to rooms as well as fighting each other. The officer said the hotel has reported damages of around 50 thousand euro to its rooms and facilities.

30 fake car diagnostic units have been seized at Alicante-Elche airport, in addition to three Algerian men being arrested by the Guardia Civil. The fakes were shipped in from China and were destined for an Algerianowned business in Alicante City. The diagnostic units

A farmer has been found guilty of the murder two years ago of American Denise Thiem, who went missing as she walked the pilgrimage route to Santiago in northern Spain. Miguel Angel Muñoz Blas, 41, was convicted by a court in León on Wednesday of the murder of 40-year-old Thiem, with

her body discovered five months after she disappeared while walking the Camino de Santiago. Her corpse had been hidden, after the farmer had chopped off her hands. Police investigators at the time said they believed the killer may have removed her hands in an attempt to hinder her identification and

possible forensic traces of her attacker that may have been under her fingernails after the struggle. More than 100 witnesses testified during the trial, with evidence that several other women had been harassed by Muñoz Blas as they walked the same route. He now faces 25 years in jail at a future hearing.

Labs Raided

Two drugs laboratories in Madrid have been raided with 170 kilos of cocaine seized in a major operation by the National Police. 17 people were arrest-

ed in 14 raids in the Madrid, Toledo, and Segovia areas, with more arrests not being ruled out. The drugs were shipped to Spain from

South America in suitcases from Colombia, parcels from Brazil and even impregnated in the soles of about 200 pairs of shoes sent from Ecuador.

Make It Definitive

The Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, has demanded that the Basque terrorist group ETA apologise for decades of violence and then disband "definitively" after it provided France with a list of arms caches to finalise a promise to disarm. In a statement last Saturday, Rajoy said the arms cache move signalled the "definitive defeat" of ETA, blamed for 829 deaths dating back to 1968. Describing the organisation as "terrorists", Rajoy

reiterated the group could expect no government favours as a result and "still less, impunity for their crimes". "The only logical response to this situation is (for ETA) to announce its definitive dissolution, to apologise to its victims and to disappear rather than mount media operations to disguise its defeat," said Rajoy. The Spanish Government said it would not make an "evaluation" of the weapons

arsenal until French authorities have neutralised eight caches of weapons containing 120 firearms and three tonnes of explosives in the southwestern PyreneesAtlantiques department bordering Spain. In 2011, ETA announced that it had abandoned its armed campaign, but did not give up its weapons. It also continued to insist on amnesty talks for some of their 360 jailed group members, 75 of them located in France.

Body Battle

The family of a British millionaire are still fighting to bring his body back from the Costa del Sol, some three years after he was murdered by his ex-lover, according to a report in The Mirror newspaper. Slovakian swimwear model Mayka Kukucova was convicted last May of twice shooting 48 year old Andrew Bush in the head in a jealous rage. He was buried in 2014 in a funeral arranged by the Spanish government. Daughter Ellie, 22, is still being refused consent to repatriate his remains. She said: “We’ve now appealed to get dad’s body

back seven times but we’re still not allowed to bring him home as Kukucova is mounting appeals. She keeps appealing on different circumstances, so it is delaying everything – including us being able to bring him home." Kukucova got 15 years and six months for killing Mr Bush in April 2014, but her sentence has since been cut to 13 years nine months. A Malaga jury heard she shot him twice in the head and once in the arm after he dumped her for Russian model Maria Korotaeva. Mr.Bush was buried in Estepona in front of just 10 people.

Big Sam Sells

Ex-England manager Sam Allardyce is selling his fivebedroom Costa Blanca villa for four million euro. Allardyce, now in charge of Crystal Palace, put the property, which is located in Moraira, on the market after using it as his hideout last year. The former England manager was sacked from the job after 67 days when a sting operation by the Daily Telegraph appeared to show

him trying to negotiate a £400,000 speaking deal and advising fictional businessmen about how to get around FIFA and FA rules on third-party ownership of players. The air-conditioned property, which he bought in 2009 for over two million euro, famously has a plaque fixed on to the wall outside bearing its nickname 'Big Sam's Villa'.

Just like Spanish bank accounts. If you are new to Spain and have no idea what to do, then take financial advice as you may be able to reposition your investments to avoid having to complete the Modelo 720 in the future and avoid the heavy fines. In today’s financial climate it is essential you do everything you can to make sure your money is safe and secure, and what you want to transpire in the future has the best chance of happening. If you need advice or if have any questions regarding the above you can contact me,

Many people who have moved to Spain and have kept assets in the UK must declare their overseas assets each year by 31st March for the previous year date ending 31st December. There are three categories: Cash, Investments and Property. If the value of the overseas asset in any category is above €50,000, then a declaration via the Modelo 720 should be completed. There are fines imposed if there is a failure to complete. If you have not yet completed theModelo 720 when perhaps you think you should have done, you may have thought ‘the Spanish authorities will never find out about my assets’. To a degree, it is true, where the Spanish authorities have been under a bit of pressure with the new tidal wave of information being received, and processing this in the correct way, they have somewhat been dependant on individuals coming forward with information. This year this is about to

change following the global automatic exchange of information regime. Just over half of the countries involved, around 101 of them, will be reporting to Spain this year, and the gathering of data should be complete by the end of 2017, so that by 2018 all information will be ready to be exchanged. What this means is if you have an ISA with a UK bank, for example, in the UK with a value of over 50,000€ the Spanish authorities will be informed automatically. Or if you have accounts in the Isle of Man or Switzerland, where there previously was some form of anonymity, then details of these also will also be sent to the Spanish authorities automatically. A survey from a Canadian university suggests that a man’s best friend could do more than just keep a family company — pets could actually improve childrens’ health if they’re exposed to them at a young age. Babies that grow up in families with pets — 70 per cent of which were dogs — showed higher levels of certain types of gut bacteria, or microbes, that can reduce the risk of developing allergies and obesity. According to lead researcher Anita Kozyrskyi of the University of Alberta, there’s a “critical window of time when gut immunity and microbes co-develop, and when disruptions to the process result in changes to gut immunity.” Kozyrskyi and her team of 12 scientists collected and studied fecal samples from the children involved in their study. It builds on research that suggests growing up with dogs can also reduce the chances children will develop asthma. Researchers believe that exposing young children to dirt and bacteria at a young age, such as dog fur and dirt a pet might track in on their paws, can boost immunity early on. It’s not known whether the immunity boost comes from the pets themselves, or from people touching them. The newest phase of research suggests that if babies are exposed to pets in the womb, or in their first three months of life, it increases two important bacteria, Ruminococcus and Oscillospora, which they say are linked to reducing allergies and obesity in children. “The abundance of these two bacteria were increased twofold when there was a pet in the house,” Kozyrskyj said.

SANDY Born last summer, Sandy is a beautiful, tiny little girl that is currently being looked after by APAH, and is now looking for a forever home. Her brother Brandy, is twice the size of her. She has a very sweet and gentle nature and he is a little bit of a softie too. To arrange to meet the brother and sister, then please call APAH on either 630 422 563 or 616 210 850.

The pet exposure, Kozyrskyj said, affects the gut microbiome “indirectly,” either from dog to mom and mom to unborn baby during pregnancy, or during the first three months. The study also suggests having pets in the house could reduce the chances of a mother passing on a strep infection during birth, which can cause pneumonia in newborns. Kozyrskyj said even if parents have a dog while the mother was pregnant, and it was then given away before the birth, the exposure could still have an impact on the child’s immune-system development. Kozyrskyj isn’t ruling out that families that don’t have or want pets may want to take advantage of these health benefits, admitting there could be a “dog in a pill” alternative to getting these microbiomes into infants’ systems. “It’s not far-fetched that the pharmaceutical industry will try to create a supplement of these microbiomes, much like (what) was done with probiotics,” she said.

Twins Removed Ms Ibáñez has become a mother thanks to IVF treatment only to have her babies taken into care. Her first child, a daughter born when the single mother was 58, was taken into care at the age of three due to neglect, and now lives in Canada with relatives. “Better sooner than later. It was worse the way they did it last time, waiting until the girl was three years old and making it a terrible trauma both for the mother and the girl,” a friend of Ms Ibáñez told the El Mundo newspaper. The social services department of the Castilla y León region said that the decision would be reviewed after six months.

2 Beautiful Ways to Decorate Wood Eggs for Easter. Needed Wood eggs (or any eggs you’d like to use) Baker’s twine in several colors Felt sticker strips Scissors White glue Small brush Hot glue These first set of eggs are simple to make but are perfect if you want to add temporary color during the Easter and Spring season. I’ve had these wood eggs for years and they are a fun addition to my kitchen decor but I wanted to perk them up a bit for Easter. Simply wrap the eggs using the felt strips cut to the length you need. Nothing could be easier than that. It’s like instant decor! Just remove the strips to have the eggs returned to their original state after Easter, if you desire. I love how these twine wrapped eggs turned out. Start on the bigger end of the egg and add a drop of hot glue, quickly attach the end of the twine to the glue on the egg and make a small swirl with the twine. This is the beginning of the wrapping. I tried using white glue to get it started but it was quicker and easier to use hot glue to secure it in the beginning. You don’t want to use hot glue for the rest of the egg though or it could turn out uneven. I worked in sections while applying the glue. Brush glue on about 1/3 of the egg and continue wrapping the twine around the egg until you reach where the glue ends then apply glue to the next section. Make sure to keep the twine as close together as possible to avoid gaps. End the wrapping by adding a drop of hot glue to the other end and cutting the twine as close to the egg as possible. Make sure to keep the twine as close together as possible to avoid gaps. End the wrapping by adding a drop of hot glue to the other end and cutting the twine as close to the egg as possible. These eggs are a simple way to add color and texture to any space for Easter or Spring. I might make more twine eggs. They were a lot of fun. If I get tired of the felt eggs I can simply peel off the strips and return the eggs to their original state.

Spain is again the world's most tourist-friendly country according to the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index 2017, drawn up by the World Economic Forum, which surveyed 136 countries, Behind Spain come France and Germany in exactly the same positions as last year.

Although the report says Spain has benefited from plummeting holidaymaker numbers in traditional sunshine destinations such as Turkey, Tunisia and Egypt, its 'excellent' tourism services and infrastructure, makes it a "mature destination very geared-up to catering for national and foreign visi-

tors". There was a warning in the report though that the Spanish transport network needed to be upgraded. Spain's worst rating, perhaps surprisingly. was over prices where it came in 99th position out of the 136 countries that were surveyed.

To ensure 2017 got off to a great start the team at Bradleys joined forces with experienced Spanish scrap merchants ‘Autos Desguaces Gomez’, and together they have created a custom built breakers yard complete with decontamination area and specific sites to strip down vehicles. The new, fully licensed yard, all 3,000 square metres of it, is located just minutes from the AP-7 motorway exit 730 at Catral. It houses literally tens of thousands of car parts with some 4,000 cars on site. So if you’re desperate to replace a broken door handle or find a new motor for your old cherished vehicle … look no further than Bradley’s … they’re sure to be able to help and they can even recommend a reliable local mechanic to help fit the part if needed. Liver and bacon with onion gravy A good plate of liver and bacon has always been one of our favourite meals so we're dead chuffed that we can still enjoy it. Serve with lots of greens and a smidgen of mash.

INGREDIENTS 450g lambs’ or calves’ liver, sliced (thawed, if frozen) 4 tsp plain flour 20g butter 1 tsp sunflower oil 1 medium onion, fairly thinly sliced 2 rindless lean back bacon rashers (about 55g), each cut into 2cm wide strips 500ml beef stock, made with 1 stock cube 2 tsp tomato ketchup flaked sea salt ground black pepper METHOD Rinse the liver in a colander under cold water and drain it well on kitchen paper. Put 2 teaspoons of

the flour in a large bowl and season with plenty of salt and pepper. Add the liver to the bowl and turn it in the flour until lightly coated. Melt half the butter with the oil in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Tap the excess flour off each slice of liver and add them to the pan using tongs. Cook for 1½–2 minutes on each side until lightly browned but not completely cooked through, then pop them on to a plate. Turn down the heat and melt the remaining butter in the same pan. Add the sliced onion and cook for a minute or so, stirring to separate the layers. Next, add the bacon and

cook together for another 5 minutes or until the onion is softened and pale golden brown, stirring often.Sprinkle the remaining flour over the onion and bacon and cook for a few seconds, stirring. Pour the hot stock slowly into the pan, stirring constantly. Bring to a simmer, stir in the ketchup and cook over a medium heat until the gravy is thickened and glossy. Season to taste with salt and pepper.Serve the liver and bacon with a small portion of mashed potatoes and lots of freshly cooked greens.

Rules of memory 'beautifully' rewritten

What really happens when we make and store memories has been unravelled in a discovery that surprised even the scientists who made it. The US and Japanese team found that the brain "doubles up" by simultaneously making two memories of events. One is for the here-and-now and the other for a lifetime, they found. It had been thought that all memories start as a short-term memory and are then slowly converted into a long-term one. Experts said the findings were surprising, but also beautiful and convincing. 'Significant advance' Two parts of the brain are heavily involved in remembering our personal experiences. The hippocampus is the place for short-term memories while the cortex is home to long-term memories. This idea became famous after the case of Henry Molaison in the 1950s. His hippocampus was damaged during epilepsy surgery and he was no longer able to make new memories, but his ones from before the operation were still there. So the prevailing idea was that memories are formed in the hippocampus and then moved to the cortex where they are "banked".

The team at the Riken-MIT Center for Neural Circuit Genetics have done something mindbogglingly advanced to show this is not the case. The experiments had to be performed on mice, but are thought to apply to human brains too. They involved watching specific memories form as a cluster of connected brain cells in reaction to a shock. Researchers then used light beamed into the brain to control the activity of individual neurons - they could literally switch memories on or off. The results, published in the journal Science, showed that memories were formed simultaneously in the hippocampus and the cortex. Prof Susumu Tonegawa, the director of the research centre, said: "This was surprising. This is contrary to the popular hypothesis that has been held for decades. "This is a significant advance compared to previous knowledge, it's a big shift." The mice do not seem to use the cortex's long-term memory in the first few days after it is formed. They forgot the shock event when scientists turned off the short-term memory in the hippocampus. However, they could then make the mice remember by manually switching the long-term memory on (so it was definitely there). "It is immature or silent for the first several days after formation," Prof Tonegawa said. The researchers also showed the long-term memory never matured if the connection between the hippocampus and the cortex was blocked. So there is still a link between the two parts of the brain, with the balance of power shifting from the hippocampus to the cortex over time. Dr Amy Milton, who researches memory at Cambridge University, described the study as "beautiful, elegant and extremely impressive. I'm quite surprised. "The idea you need the cortex for memories I'm comfortable with, but the fact it's so early is a surprise. "This is [just] one study, but I think they've got a strong case, I think it's convincing and I think this will tell us about how memories are stored in humans as well." For now, this is simply a piece of fundamental science that explains how our bodies work. But Prof Tonegawa says it may illuminate what goes on in some diseases of memory including dementia. One of his previous studies showed mice with Alzheimer's were still forming memories but were not able to retrieve them. "Understanding how this happens may be relevant in brain disease patients," he said.

95% of People are dehydrated (MedB Clinic Research) Water is key to the survival of all life in the planet. We can go for weeks or even months without food, but no one survives longer than a few days without water. Up to 70% of the human body is made up of entirely water. The blood and lymph system are 90% water and rely on the adequate resupply of water to function effectively. The kidney filters 5 litres of blood every minute to wash out waste from the body. When toxins accumulate in the body, they give rise to all sorts of problems including headaches and tiredness, which are the main symptoms of contaminants. Many organs of the body contain water and need constant hydration to function properly including the eyes and joints and pancreas. The digestive system relies heavily on water to adequately perform

its function. We need to take at least 2 or 3 litres of water daily to take the adequate amount of water required daily. Many people do not drink adequate amounts of water, and worse still the common beverages taken by people today are powerful dehydrating substance that drain water from the body. These include coffee, alcohol as well as the sweet beverages that create a concentrated blood. In the last few weeks, MedB clinic acquired a Body Composition Analyser which is a health screening device that measures a number of key parameters to assess a person’s state of health. The analyser can measure the amount of water in the body as well as the weight of minerals, vitamins, fats, proteins, in addition to other indices such as weight, height, BMI,

and waist-hip ratio. Among these parameters, the weight of water in the body is of high significance. The scan gives the water content for men to be - 56 62% and for women between 50 - 60%. So far, we have had over 100 people on the machine, and only 5 or 6 out of the 100 had adequate water content. Even when the water percentage is at 50% only 10 out of 100 people had the adequate amount, including us at MedB clinic! If you are not consciously aware of drinking water, then you are most likely dehydrated. It is important to drink at least 2 litres of water daily and then other beverages if you still can. Reports that Marmite prevents dementia are laying it on a bit thick "A daily slice of Marmite on toast may help prevent you getting dementia," the Daily Mail reports, with little justification. A small study did find that Marmite had an effect on electrical activity in the brain, but there is no evidence this would prevent dementia. The study involved 28 people in their early 20s. Researchers looked to see whether eating Marmite affected the brain's response to watching flickering images on a screen, measured by electroencephalogram

(EEG) scans. This test is used as a measure of "brain cell excitability" in the visual cortex area. Marmite contains vitamin B12 and glutamate which are thought necessary for the brain to produce GABA, which is thought to reduce brain cell excitability. Too little GABA may be a factor in epilepsy. The study compared the effect of eating a teaspoon of Marmite each day for one month with eating peanut butter. Healthy volunteers were tested before and after the trial of Marmite or peanut butter. After a month, scans on

the Marmite-eaters' brains showed lower levels of excitability. The researchers suggest that boosting GABA levels through diet might contribute to treating epilepsy. However, there's no clinical evidence to support this indication, never mind the media speculation about dementia. For those who fall into the "hate camp" when it comes to Marmite, other sources of vitamin B12 include meat and cheese.

The Health Benefits of Olive Oil

By Julie Day Olive oil is perhaps one of the healthiest natural products on the planet and the benefits of regularly incorporating it into your diet are numerous. Inhabitants of the Mediterranean region who follow a traditional Mediterranean diet and have a healthy lifestyle are likely to live exceptionally long lives that are relatively disease-free. Although the Spanish consume fairly large quantities of fat in their diet, the incidence of heart disease is still extremely low. This is essentially due to the type of fat that is consumed. Saturated fats are found in red meat, cheese and in processed and convenience foods, such as chips, cakes, biscuits, butter, crisps and margarine, which are all typical of a British diet. These fats, together with Trans or hydrogenated fats, are extremely harmful to the body and should be eliminated from the diet. They raise the levels of

“bad” cholesterol in the blood and trans fats also lower the levels of “good” cholesterol. A diet that is full of saturated and hydrogenated fats will more than likely lead to severe cardiovascular or heart disease, as high levels of “bad” cholesterol clog up the arteries, restrict blood flow, raise blood pressure and assume a very high risk of heart attack or any other cardiovascular disease. Olive oil is a monounsaturated fat, which not only increase the levels of “good” cholesterol in the blood but also clear away the “bad” cholesterol fatty deposits. Monounsaturated fats actually protect the heart and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. Olive oil also contains high levels of essential fatty acids such as Omega-3 and Omega-6, which similarly to oily fish and some fish oils, are required by the body to keep joints flexible and supple and bones strong and healthy.

Doctors of natural and homeopathic medicine strongly recommend olive oil to sufferers of diabetes, patients with liver trouble, constipation, PMT and even women going through the menopause. As well as helping you feel good for longer, olive oil has an abundance of vitamins that will also keep you looking good for longer. Particularly rich in Vitamin E, which is often added to skin creams, olive oil is said to delay the ageing process and keep the skin soft and supple. Some beauticians say that one tablespoon of olive oil a day mixed with fresh orange or lemon juice will maintain a shiny and healthy head of hair, keep skin supple and smooth and add strength to brittle nails. So, who needs Oily of Ulay when you’ve got a bottle of olive oil in the kitchen cupboard!

How to do Ibiza on a budget

Arriving at the airport, head straight for the bus stop outside – taxis are pricey and you can queue for an hour in peak season. Bus No 10 makes the 10km route every 15 minutes in summer (ibizabus.com for winter schedules) and drops you right in the port (don't get off at the bus station, as it's quite far from the centre). Ibiza Town offers plenty of budget accommodation, but there are a few absolute standouts. Hostal Parque (+34 971 301358, hostalparque.com, doubles from €65) occupies a prime position in a leafy square right below the Old Town walls. Rooms are modern, with air conditioning and Wi-Fi and three rooftop aticos have private decked terraces. The pavement cafe below is hugely popular with locals (it serves Ibiza's best escalope de pollo for €8). Across the square is the quirky Casa Huéspedes Vara de Rey (+34 971 301376, hibiza.com, doubles from €53), a sprawling guesthouse with a boho vibe. Ask for a room with a view. Start with a walk up into topsy-turvy Dalt Vila (literally "high town") – the Unesco world heritage site is a maze of cobbles and whitewashed walls. Free audio tours (in six languages) are available from the tourist office on Vara de Rey (+34 971 399232, eivissa.es). Keep an eye out for the secret escape tunnel behind the Catholic shrine on Calle de San Ciriaco. The sensory-overload Medieval festival in May is free and one of the most dramatic ways to experience Dalt Vila, with performances, strolling musicians, singing and dancing. Likewise Easter week (Semana Santa), when torchlit processions from the stunning cathedral provide gloriously gothic eye candy for not a penny. For more recent history, walk through mysterious Sa Penya and discover the clifftop home of the late architect Erwin Broner (free entrance, see eivissa.es for opening hours) – a modernist triumph. For lunch, head to Mercado Viejo (the old market) and seek out Nico at the BioLunch stall for a slice of homemade organic tarta de puerros (leek quiche, €2.75). It comes on a paper plate, so you can wander through boutique-lined backstreets nibbling before picking a sidewalk cafe for a glass of vino rosado (€2, anywhere). If you're after a healthier fix, head to Es Tap Nou (Carre Madrid 18, estapnou.es, +34 971 399841) a fruit and vegetable market with a cafe-bar attached. Choose your fresh produce and they'll make it into a delicious salad with baked goat's cheese, tuna or smoked salmon for around €5. If you're still culture-hungry, the brilliant Centro Cultura S'Alamera (Vara de Rey) offers free interactive Ibiza-centric photography/ art exhibitions. Currently showing is an exhibition of Adlib fashion of the 1960s. The port comes to life at about 8pm – have drinks just off the waterfront to save about 50% – then grab a pavement table at the pizza mecca, El Pirata (Calle Garijo 10b, +34 971 192630, elpirata-ibiza.com) and watch the nightly show unfold – club processions, street artists and drag queens all perform here, and if you spend long enough sipping that mojito it will be worth it in entertainment value alone. For a hearty local supper, head to nearby Comidas San Juan (Carrer Montgri 8, +34 971 311603), Bon Profit (Plaça des Parc 5, +34 971 313866) or Los Pasajeros (Calle Vicente Soler 6, +34 653 350961 – try to nab the romantic balcony table-for-two). These all offer superb home-cooked food (grilled meats, tapas, pasta) at rock-bottom prices. Sushi is hugely popular in Ibiza, and also astronomically expensive. One exception to the rule is the brand new Sushiya Aoyama (Plaza sa Drassaneta 13, +34 627 861566), where the freshest sushi and sake in a tiny historic square will set you back €20-€25pp. Many bars offer nightly live music, and the legendary Teatro Pereyra (Calle del Comte Rossello, +34 971 191468, teatropereyra.com) is the most famous of these. If you're after the real deal, however, you'll need to go to Pacha (Avenida 8 de Agosto, pacha.com) – the world's most famous disco. Door charges are extreme (up to €70, though you can get tickets from €39 in advance online). But here's a trick: book dinner at the Pacha restaurant (+34 971 310959, information only) and you get free access to the club (there is a minimum restaurant spend, depending on night, from €70pp). It's still an expensive night but you're getting the world-class experience and good food too. Alternatively, head out of town to Underground (+34 971 198015, ibizaunderground.com), a low-key yet brilliant late-night club with great DJs, a local vibe, cheap drinks and a negotiable door charge. This island is famous for its beaches, and you will need to see them. Some of them can be reached by bus, but it's probably best to hire a car. Go to doyouspain.com for the absolute best deals. (Tip: beware the deals that require you to pay for a full tank of petrol in advance

– their "in-house" fuel prices can be 50% more than filling station prices.) Salinas is a great beach to start at – it's justly famous for its mile-long swathe of white sand. Take a towel – sun loungers cost €8 to hire, with a further €8 for an umbrella. The beachfront restaurants are great, but for a fraction of the cost, stop off at the roadside supermercado (on the right just before you cross the salt flats) and order a tasty ham and cheese bocadillo (baguette sandwich) to take away. Your foil-wrapped goodies plus a bottle of chilled rosado (Marqués de Cáceres is good, inexpensive and sold everywhere) will cost less than €8, and the people in the shop will uncork the wine for you and give you plastic cups. If you plan to stay at the beach itself, Hostal Mar Y Sal (+34 971 396584, hostalmarysal.com, doubles from €60) has clean, basic rooms, a decent restaurant and a vibey late-night bar terrace just 20 steps from the sand. Just down the road, Boutique Hostal Salinas (+34 971 308899, hostalsalinas.com, doubles from €97) offers free daily après-beach DJ sessions in a gorgeous garden, plus weekly free flamenco shows throughout summer. Further round the coast, Cala Jondal is home to famed beachlife hotspots like the Blue Marlin. Away from the crowds, there are a couple of more chilled options – Tropicana (+34 971 802640, tropicanaibiza.com) has a laid-back Caribbean vibe and an inexpensive beach menu. There is free live music on Sunday evenings – mainly salsa and tropical. Beware the hidden lounger/umbrella/cotton bed cover charges, though. Next door's Alegria (no phone) is cheaper still, has a lovely elevated aspect and a cocktail happy hour. Even better, stop at roadside supermarket Rincon d'Es Codolar en route and stock up on divine homemade empanadas (savoury Argentinian pasties). History buffs will love the nearby cove of Sa Caleta. It has a great fish restaurant (no phone; and don't be fooled by the shabby-chic exterior – it's expensive) but is also home to the earliest ruins in Ibiza – a Phoenician settlement dating from 654BC. It's free to look around and there is ample multi-language information provided. If beaches aren't your bag, head inland for some exploration and adventure. For hot-air balloon views, minus the cost, head to the whitewashed village of Sant Josep de sa Talaia. Following the painted arrows just behind Bar Bernat Vinya, weave your way up out of the village and towards the top of Ibiza's highest hill, Sa Talaia. The walk is strenuous and hot – take a hat and water – but the views from the top are out of this world, and on a clear day you can see both Mallorca and the mainland. Head down the other side and walk back to the village (about three hours in total), stopping at Pizzeria Es Verge (+34 971 800041) on the way home for huge, cheap pizzas and icy draught lager. Bliss. Another unmissable view is of the mystical rock Es Vedrà, rising from the water. Take the road from Es Cubells to Cala D'Hort and look out for the left-hand turn to Sa Pedrera. Park at the end of the lane and walk a short way to view the island from the clifftops. Shopping in the south is all about the vast San Jordi flea market. On Saturday mornings the racetrack is filled with stalls selling clothes, furniture and bric-a-brac. There's a lot of tat but some serious treasure too. The bar inside has cheap sandwiches and shots of the local liquor, hierbas. If you want to party, there are plenty of good options. Generally, Playa d'En Bossa has about as much finesse as a chip pan fire, but the seminal We Love… (welove-music.com) party at Space (voted world's best club several times) on Sundays is a must-do – the world's greatest DJs, a huge, festival-like atmosphere and Space's legendary terrace. It starts early, and if you get there pre-9pm it's half-price (€20). Ibiza's other party central, Sant Antoni, has a bad reputation, but the legendary sunset strip is beloved by all. Rock up at Café Mambo (+34 971 346638, cafemamboibiza.com) any night of the week for Pacha's infamous pre-parties – see DJs such as Erick Morillo and David Guetta perform for free, and avoid the astronomical club costs. For the same sunset with none of the drama, drive out of town towards Cala Gracioneta (signposted) and find the beautiful Hostal La Torre (Urbanizacion Cap Negret 25, +34 971 342271, hostallatorre.com), a traditional cliff-top hotel, whose terrace serves inexpensive food and drinks and offers a panoramic view of the sunset over the sea – it drops in front of your eyes (book in advance for a sunset table). If you plan to stay in the area, Casa Datscha (Apartado de Correos 24, +34 971 344075, casadatscha.net, doubles from €56) offers quirkily chic rooms in a glorious out-of-town setting (pool, art, vistas to die for). It even has an honesty bar.

Sunday 23 April, 2017 Pilar de la Horadada Half marathon and Fun Run.

It´s Easter, and the towns in the Region of Valencia bear the full strength of long-standing traditions, rooted in centuries of celebrations and massive popular participation. The processions, religious events in general and the uniqueness of every representation has contributed towards many of them being declared Festivities of Touristic Interest. In the province of Alicante, the Easter celebrations of Crevillent and Orihuela, both of which have been declared Festivities of International Touristic Interest, stand out in particular. The Easter festivities in Orihuela feature the procession of the Santo Entierro (Holy Burial) on Holy Saturday, one of the most unique Pasos (depictions of the Passion of Christ) in the Easter celebrations: La Diablesa (the she-devil). The imagery by the artist Salzillo, in Orihuela, and by Mariano Benlliure, in Crevillent, are both worthy of note. The historical town centre is at the heart of the most unique Easter procession in Alicante, the Santa Cruz procession on Holy Wednesday. It is a risky procession throughout steep streets and stairways. In what concerns the festivities in the province of Valencia, the ones in Sagunto or Alzira, which have been declared Festivities of a National Touristic Interest, as well as those of Torrent, which have been declared Festivities of Regional Touristic Interest, stand out. Be sure not to miss the doseles (canopies) of the brotherhoods and guilds, which are used as decorative motifs in the images that characterise the scenes portrayed in the various pasos. The processions in Sagunto are particularly vibrant, with two of the most beautiful events, the Encuentro Doloroso procession (depicting Jesus' encounter with his mother) and the solemn Way of the Cross up to the Holy Calvary of this historical city. In the city of Valencia, the Seaside Easter celebrations of the neighbourhoods of Cabanyal, el Canyamelar and the Grau, which have been declared Festivities of National Touristic Interest, are the most famous. The impressive Procesión del Silencio (Procession of Silence) on Holy Thursday and the Santo Entierro (Holy Burial) on Holy Friday draw in large crowds of confreres and onlookers. In Castellón, be sure not to miss the Easter festivities in Vila-real, some of the oldest in the province, or the Rompida de la hora (a drum roll in commemoration of the death of Christ) in L’Alcora, which trembles among the din of drums and bass drums on Holy Friday when, at midday, hundreds of drums are beaten in unison. In the festivities of Vinaròs, which have been declared Festivities of Regional Touristic Interest, concerts and exhibitions have also been planned to accompany these religious celebrations with cultural and festive events.

Bus Service to Orihuela for the Easter Parades Orihuela town hall has arranged a bus service which will run from the coast to the city to enable coastal and Entrenaranjos residents to visit the Easter celebrations, without having to drive. TRELI ON THE TELLY Breaking Back

WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

It’s the era of revivals on US TV, and over the last year we have had good ones of The X Files and 24, and now step forward the return of Prison Break, which made a comeback on FOX UK on Monday. The show ended back in 2010 with the death of Michael Scofield played by Wentworth Miller, and that was that, until Miller and costar Dominic Purcell started working together on the DC action series, Legends of Tomorrow. They floated the idea of reviving Prison Break, and here we are back for a new run of nine episodes, and you can see the money on screen, with a big on-location shoot in Morocco, and some great action set pieces. Scofield is banged up in a prison in Yeman, and his friends get wind that he’s alive, and so off we go with the plans to free him, along with a bunch of nasty people trying to keep track of them. The plot, of course, has got holes in it, but it all rocks along at a frentic pace and does have a different feel about it, rather than a

rehash of the original show. The characters have all moved on and that’s good, along with fan favourite, Robert Knepper’s wonderful T-Bag, getting some of the best lines as he delivers the news to Scoffield’s brother, Lincoln (Dominic Purcell) that Michael is still alive. I await the big twists, and though its all as daft as a brush, it succeeds in being entertaining, and there’s nothing wrong in that! There was plenty wrong in the BAFTA TV award nominations announced this week, and another example of why I don’t rate them at all, compared to the NTA awards(viewer-voted) or the Emmy and Golden Globe awards in the States. No chapter and verse from yours truly here, but I would like to know why The Night Manager and Line of Duty were not even nominated in the best drama category? The list of four did include The Durrells (the others being The Crown, War and Peace, and Happy Valley), which I enjoyed, but with the greatest of respect, it was not in the same league as

the other two. Golden Globe winners Tom Hiddleston and Olivia Colman (both from The Night Manager) were snubbed, whilst elsewhere there was no nomination for Coronation Street in the continuing series (soaps) category, though Hollyoaks was there, and the fantastic Catastrophe got nothing for Channel Four in any comedy category. It’s poor stuff that lacks credibility from BAFTA, not helped by the fact that they only have four nominations in each section, compared to bigger nomination lists in other award shows, that acknowledge a range of quality. What is that the Yanks have a better sense of rewarding top British shows as opposed to BAFTA? OK, so we all know that ITV’s Benidorm is nowhere near as funny as it was when it was appeared a decade ago, but I’ve just sat through the last two episodes and not laughed once. It’s not been helped by the absence of two key characters, for different reasons, played by Tim Healy and Sherrie Hewson, but

that’s still no excuse for not including any comedy in what is meant to be a comedy show. ITV did a fine job in their first ever screening of the Grand National last weekend, and I’m pleased to see racing get such a high profile, helped by good production values. Meanwhile, the US Masters golf final round gave BBC 2 viewers a great late night Sunday treat, and without any ad breaks. It was also sadly the last time

that we will see Hazel Irvine anchoring what is left of the BBC’s golf coverage, and that’s a shame. She’s as good as Clare Balding in my opinion, but without all the trappings of publicity that go with her. Nevertheless, Irvine is now in for a busy stint presenting the World Snooker on the BBC. Sunday’s Line of Duty produced a “what the heck” moment at the end of episode two on BBC 1 and it literally had me on the edge

of my seat. Meanwhile, there are more rape suspects then Broadchurch residents ahead of this Monday’s final-ever episode on ITV, and I loved David Tennant’s character lecturing a bunch of lads to get off his daughter’s back. I’m so glad that Broadchurch is going out on a high, but that still won’t be enough I suspect to convince the BAFTA toffs that it deserves success next year!

Win FREE Tickets to Terra Natura and Aqua Natura in Benidorm

Thursday 13th April 2017

For the Two weeks of Easter, TKO Radio we will be giving away combined tickets for both the Terra Natura animal park and the Aqua Natura water park in Benidorm. Terra Natura Animal Parks lets visitors make contact with animals with barriers invisible to the human eye. Many species can be viewed, including elephants, tigers, monkeys, lions, African buffalo, and rhinos. The 320,000 square metres (79 acres) of Terra Natura Benidorm are divided into four zones or areas: Pangea (the park entrance area), America, Asia and Europe. Between the areas visitors can see about 1500 animals representing 200 species. Aqua Natura Benidorm is a 40,000-square-metre (10-acre) water park with an sea lion show where people can enjoy a show and even swim with sea lions, and a large swimming pool area with over 1 kilometre (3,300 ft) of flumes and slides. Each of the combined tickets are worth 39â‚Ź, allowing acces to both areas, although the water park is only open for the warmer months, opening its doors from May to October. That doesn´t prevent you from visiting the animal park however, including over the Easter holidays, and enjoying a unique experience as you are transported into different parts of the world. For your chance to win these tickets, all you have to do is listen to TKO Radio, on 90.8 or 91.9FM, or you can visit the website, tko.fm, for more information, including links to both parks.

BlueMoon Solutions www.bluemoonsolutions.es

BlueMoon Solutions is the computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca. BlueMoon Solutions comes to you at home or at work. Their personal service covers from Alicante to Pilar de la Horadada.

Richard moved to Spain ten years ago having left his management background behind in the UK and decided to use his IT skills to help home users and small businesses with their PC problems. Now a relaxed 'computer man' he is out and about in the Spanish sun every day, making house and shop calls and using his vast experience and qualifications to sort out the problem there and then. Computers are his hobby as well as his work so don’t be surprised to get an answer to your email in the early hours!

ADVICE: Kathy wanted to know whether the Hola extension ADVICE: Brian was questioning a Megatrends screen that was safe to use. appeared on his computer

Q A

Hi Richard. Do you know anything about Hola? I was going to add it to chrome, it’s supposed to let you do catch ups on TV progs. But it seems maybe not a good idea after all? Let me know if you find out anything many thanks Kathy.

Hi Kathy, yes, I have used it before and even recommended it, however I don’t think I would trust it now. You see there have been a number of issues with it, the worst of which (admittedly a couple of years ago) was that allegedly the people who make Hola sold some of each users Internet connection for use in botnet attacks – see the link below….

Q A

Hello Richard, for the last few weeks I have frequently got a page called American Megatrends when I open my computer, can I get rid of it?Thank you for your help. Brian

Yes, you had to feel for Justin Rose at Augusta, but wasn’t it brilliant that Sergio Garcia at last got that elusive first major under his belt at his 74th attempt, and on the day that it would have been the birthday of his idol, Sevvy Ballesteros, writes JOHN FARMER. Rose and Garcia, both great friends incidentally from their teenage years, gave us an absolute treat in the final round of the US Masters on Sunday, in what in effect was a great matchplay shoot-out, plus a couple of sudden-death holes into the bargain. It was also perhaps a rare occasion for most golf fans in that it didn’t really matter who won, as both guys play the game in such a positive spirit, and they delivered in spades on Sunday for the countless millions watching the drama unfold around the world. Sergio seemed to be out of it come the 15th, but a remarkable eagle, his first in 452 holes at Augusta (what timing!) - followed by a Rose birdie, meant the pair were tied on nine under with three to play. Garcia pushed a short birdie putt right on the par-three 16th after Rose had holed his to open a one-shot lead, only for the Englishman to bogey the 17th. Both players missed birdie putts on the last, Garcia from four feet, setting up the first Masters play-off between two European players, which Garcia nicked in fading light. "It has been such a long time coming," said the Spaniard, who took his place in the world’s top 10 on Monday. "I knew I was playing well. I felt the calmest I ever felt in a major." While Garcia was being presented with the Green Jacket in the Augusta clubhouse, Rose was left rueing another near miss. The Olympic champion has not claimed a major since winning the 2013 US Open, but lifted himself into contention for a first Masters title with five birdies in the final seven holes on Saturday. "It is disappointing to come so close," said Justin Rose. "I felt in control until the end. "But I'm really happy for Sergio. I'd love to be wearing the Green Jacket but if it wasn't me then I'm glad it is him." Those words from Rose just about summed up a wonderful sporting contest in every sense. Good on him, and well done Sergio!

Super Sergio Maverick’s Double

Spain’s Maverick Viñales has made it two wins out of two in the new Moto GP season, with victory in Sunday’s Argentina Grand Prix to back up his opening success in Qatar. The surprise Spanish package has sent out a major signal to his Spanish rivals Marc Márquez, Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa. His win in Argentina came as Britain's Cal Crutchlow enjoyed his best result yet, finally making it to the podium in third place behind

Viñales' team-mate, Italian veteran Valentino Rossi (Yamaha YZR M-1). Viñales' second victory on the trot came after missing out on pole and starting second off the grid, but he managed to pass Crutchlow's team-mate and defending world champion Marc Márquez (Honda RC 213V) by the second lap, meaning his strongest rival was behind him from very early on in the race at the Termas del Río Hondo circuit.

Dan Strikes Gold

British teenager Daniel Richardson (pictured second-left), from the Catral Taekwando club, struck gold last weekend in the junior section of the Valencian regional championships held in Onda.

Overall, the Catral team came an excellent second place in the junior category, with Adríán García striking gold, in addition to a bronze for Andrea Peñaranda. Anaís Nájar got a gold medal in the cadetes competition.

In The Net

Torrevieja’s sports councillor, Víctor Ferrández (pic-

tured right), launched the tournament this week along with organiser, Jorge Vallejo. They said that 29 clubs are being represented from all around Spain, as well as locally, with 67 teams of different age categories being entered. The final two days, including the Sunday trophy presentations, will take place in Torrevieja.

Brave Torry Defeated

Honours Even

CD ALMORADI 1 NOVELDA CF 1

ELCHE ILICITANO 2 CD TORREVIEJA 1 Torry fans bit their fingernails down to the quick on Sunday as Torry conspired to lose a second half lead, then have two vital defenders dismissed, thus missing the crucial home match this Thursday afternoon against lowly Almazora (kick-off 5.30 pm), who produced a surprise onenil win over promotion hopefuls Alzira The task in the magnificent Martinez Valero stadium in Elche was daunting. Ilicitano still harboured hopes of making the top four, whilst Torry needed to maintain their good end of season form so as to keep their noses out of the bottom four. The first half was bright and competitive. Lewis Allen showing sparkle and threat and going close before Llor did likewise for the hosts. Pastor, returning to his home club where he spent nine years, was first into the referee's notebook in what was a robust physical tussle. Captain Javi Meca followed next just 13 minutes later. Honours were even in

the first period, with neither side able to penetrate past two agile and focussed goalkeepers. But it was David who blinked first when Lewis sent Molina through and he just slide the ball under the keeper's hand to open the scoring less than ten minutes into the second period. Elche responded strongly and levelled the score when Llor netted in the far corner with Calzado and Jose Carlos struggling to keep it out. Worse was to ensue as Leomar added a second Elche goal five minutes later as the home side assumed the upper hand. Torry would not lie down though and manager Pedreno freshened things up pushing on all his substitutes within a three minute period with close to 20 minutes left to play. Lewis pushed hard through the middle and just failed to reach a cross that inched past his lunge. But Elche remained a serious threat on attack. On 84 minutes Vicente Boix brought down his oppo-

nent in the box and was dismissed from the field of play as Elche won a penalty and looked to put the game to bed. Jose Carlos sprang to his left and ushered the ball away from his goal to keep Torry in the game. Despite a 100 percent effort, Torry could not find the equaliser and in time added on, captain Javi Meca received his second caution and his marching orders. Elche took the spoils, making it five wins in a row and their final five games look easy on paper, so they retain an outside chance of the play offs. Torry on the other hand had to thank Crevillente for beating Bunol, thus keeping them level with that rival and still out of the relegation quartet. Torry now play the four teams immediately above them in the table, as well as Crevillente in what will be a madly intense finale to the season. The three teams above them are all locked on 37 points, five ahead of Torry, but victories for the Salineros would endanger them all.

Manu got a point for Almoradi with a 56th minute equaliser, but with a tough trip to Ontinyent to come this Thursday afternoon, the five point gap towards safety looks to be a tough one to bridge. Novelda controlled a lot of the first period, and were awarded a penalty when Salero was fouled, with the spot-kick duly converted by Calderón in the 23rd minute. Obele had the best chance for Almoradi which was saved by keeper Alberto. The visitors kept the pres-

sure up in the second half, but were surprised in the 56th minute when an Manu shot that appeared to be going just wide, sneaked inside the post, much to the surprise of Alberto and the Novelda defence. Benja came close for Novelda, and Obele had a good chance to secure all three points for Almoradi in added time, as his strike went over the bar. Elsewhere in the Valencia third division, Orihuela, fresh from their win at table-topping Olimpic, conspired to

lose two-nil at home to midtable Rayo Ibense, a result which severely dented Orihuela’s hopes of making it into the play-offs. Their predicament will get worse as they sit out the next set of league matches. Crevillente did Almoradi and Torrevieja a big favour by beating Bunol three-one, and can repeat their generosity by winning at thirdbottom Muro in their next match. Elche Ilicitano, after their win over Torrevieja (see left) go to mid-table Silla.

Smell Of Promotion

CD THADER 3 CALLOSA DEPORTIVA CF 1 After a bad spell, Thader have got their act together when it really matters, and now have gone level on points with third-placed Hercules B in Preferente Group Four, something that seemed distinctly unlikely a few weeks ago. However the home side didn’t get a good start, and had to be patient until the goals started flowing for them late on in Rojales last Sunday. Salva put Callosa ahead in the fourth minute, and despite Thader having most of the play in the first-half, they were still left trailing at the interval. Thader kept dominating affairs in the second half with little reward until the match was turned on its head with two strikes in the space of a minute thanks, to a Rubén penalty kick in the 69th minute, quickly followed by a goal from Chema. Those goals ended Callosa’s resistance,

and they conceded another penalty with three minutes left, which allowed Rubén to score his second from the spot, which sealed up the three points. The result means in effect, on current form, a straight shoot out between Hercules B and Thader for third place in the table, along with Elda who are three points behind them. Second-placed La Nucia are seven points clear of Hercules and La Nucia. There are no matches this weekend because of the Easter break, which means that Thader return the following weekend with a home fixture against second-bottom San Joan, and then their next match is against bottom-club Cox, before the big home showdown against Hercules on Saturday May 6th. Thader can certainly say that the fixtures have fallen in their favour, and that their own fate rests with them.

Points Chucked

REAL MADRID 1 ATLETICO MADRID 1 Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane felt his side had thrown away victory after city rivals Atletico secured at the Bernabeu through a late goal from Antoine Griezmann last Saturday. Zidane said: "We got a draw today, but I think that it's a case of two points dropped. With the performance that we put in, we could have picked up all three points. "We drew the game, but this changes nothing. The fight for the La Liga title will go right to the wire". His comments came before Barcelona’s defeat at Malaga (see right), and Real’s next La Liga match sees them away to relegation candidates Sporting Gijon this Saturday afternoon.

Five Star Monte

Barcelona Blow

MALAGA 2 BARCELONA 0 Barcelona coach Luis Enrique lamented an "unfair" defeat at Malaga on Saturday, where Brazil forward Neymar was sent off. After La Liga leaders Real Madrid had earlier been held to a one-all draw by city rivals Atletico (see left), Barcelona could have moved to the top of the table with victory at La Rosaleda. However, Sandro netted on the break against his former club on 32 minutes and substitute Jony Rodriguez added a late second after Brazil forward Neymar saw red, having picked up a needless second caution. Luis Enrique, though, felt the result was harsh on his side. He said at a news conference afterwards: "The result was unfair. We tried everything, but it did not come through.” Barcelona now entertain Real Sociedad in La Liga this Saturday evening.

Italian Advantage

CD MONTESINOS 5 CF POPULAR ORIHUELA 0 CD Montesinos had a record crowd of 554 on Sunday, who witnessed another win, which means they stay three points clear at the top of the Valencia Segunda Group 16 table, with just two matches remaining. Promotion to the 1st Regional Division is all in their own hands, and two wins will guarantee success, irrespective of what happens elsewhere. It was an excellent display of attacking football from Monte which swept away their tough tackling opponents, who had to resort to strong arm tactics in an effort to try to control the home attack. Monte were simply too good for Popular, and the final score should have been greater, with the home fans wondering how the visitors finished the game with all 11 players on the pitch after some very dubious tackling, mainly directed at top scorer Vazquinho. For the record, Alfredo opened the scoring from the penalty spot on 17 minutes after Vazquinho was hacked down inside the penalty area. Carlos Ventura scored the second with a header from a corner and Vazquinho himself made it 3-0 before the half time break. Second half goals from centre half Joao, again with a header from a corner kick and a fifth from substitute Bashir rounded off the scoring, although Monte could well have doubled that score-line missing a good number of chances. The only sour note of the afternoon was a second-half injury to Fran, who had to be taken to hospital by ambulance. So, CD Montesinos stay at the top of Group 16 with 47 points from their 20 matches played. CD Benijofar are in second place with 44 points from their 21 matches played, after their 3-2 win over Orihuela Deportiva. In third place are Callosa “B” with 42 points from 19 games, with CD Murada fourth with 40 points from their 19 matches. There are no matches this Sunday due to the Easter holiday, so the following weekend, Monte are away to Orihuela Deportiva. Photos taken by Bernt OJohan.

Welcome Relief

ELCHE 3 SEVILLA ATLETICO 2 It’s easier to pick a Grand National winner as opposed to trying to bet on what Elche are going to do in their next Segunda Division match, and after some poor results, the suffering home fans got a win to enjoy on Sunday. Crucially, it doubled the buffer between the Ilicitanos and the relegation zone to six points. Early Elche nerves were steadied when poor defensive play from Sevilla was exploited by the ageless Nino to put the Ilicitanos ahead in the fifth minute. Five minutes later Pedro nearly got the goal of the season for Elche. He ran up the field from the edge of his own penalty area and seeing Sevilla keeper Caro off his line, fired the ball from long-range just inside the Elche half, with Caro just scrambling back to keep the ball out, as well as saving some personal embarrassment. Though Elche looked assured, they could do nothing on the half-hour mark when a brilliant bit of personal skill saw Marc Gaul dribble past a couple of players to unleash a shot that Juan Carlos could do nothing about. Quickly after the interval, a fine Álex Fernández shot Elche back in front, though Sevilla had a lot of the ball and the biggest amount of chances as they tried to get an equaliser. Time ticked on, and with eight minutes remaining, a defensive mistake allowed Nino to get possession, as he laid the ball on for Borja Valle to get Elche’s third. That was an important insurance goal, as shortly afterwards, Marc Gaul got his second for Sevilla, leaving some nerve-racking minutes for the Ilicitanos supporters to endure, before their side secured three vital points to ease concerns of a possible relegation battle. Elche entertain Numancia this Saturday afternoon, with the Ilicitanos out to get two straight league wins for the first time in their current Segunda Division campaign.

JUVENTUS 3 BARCELONA 0 Barcelona will once again have to stage a major Champions League comeback if they are to book a spot in the semi-finals, after a comprehensive defeat in Italy on Tuesday night. Paulo Dybala scored twice as Juventus thoroughly deserved their victory. The Argentine forward curled home both of his goals before the break, the first from an angle inside the box and the second from a central position on the edge. Juve turned a dominant lead into one that should see them go on and win the tie when Giorgio Chiellini showed strength and guile to steer home a header from a corner. For the second European round running, Barca - who were as defensively suspect as they were in losing 4-0 to Paris StGermain in the first leg of their last-16 tie - must recover from a heavy away defeat to progress. However, after their record-breaking achievement to overturn that deficit against PSG, they will retain hope heading into the return leg at the Nou Camp next Wednesday.

Hopeful Hazard

Real Madrid increasingly believe that they will sign Eden Hazard from Chelsea in a record-breaking 100 million euro plus deal over the summer. Real feel they are getting encouraging signs that Hazard will be ready to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season if, as expected, the Blues clinch a second Premier League title in three years. Real are said to be are ready to put their Spain international striker Alvaro Morata into any deal, with the total package likely to be worth in excess of 130 million euro.

Tony’s Task

Former England and Arsenal captain Tony Adams has been appointed head coach of struggling La Liga club Granada until the end of the season. Adams replaces Lucas Alcaraz, who was sacked on Monday after a 3-1 home defeat by Valencia that leaves them 19th in the table. The 50-year-old had been working at the club since November and is vice president of the company owned by Granada's club president. His first game will be at home to Celta Vigo on Sunday. He has worked alongside Granada's president John Jiang in his role as vice president of the Chinese businessman's DDMC company and has been sporting director for Chinese Super League club Chongqing Dangdai Lifan.

La Liga has decided to get tough on internet pirates who are streaming Spanish league matches as it has launched a campaign to crack down on the illegal streaming of games. Studies show that digital piracy robs the Spanish soccer industry of nearly 175 million euro each season, keeping it from fully profiting from clubs such as Real Madrid and Barcelona and players such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. La Liga is using a proprietary tool to monitor the internet and has deployed a group of "online guards" to denounce illegal broadcasts of games. It also gets help from Google, Facebook and Twitter to find and block fraudulent streaming of matches. The online tool developed by La Liga, called Marauder, has been key in its monitoring efforts. It allows the league to constantly analyze - and automatically denounce - web contents and servers that could potentially be retransmitting illegal content. During games played in La Liga and the Copa del Rey, a team of monitors scans through social media and mobile apps to see if any content is being shared illegally. La Liga actively works with authorities to promote the arrests of those caught stealing its content, and seeks full prosecution of them in court. The league's latest anti-piracy campaign - titled "When piracy appears, football disappears" - was recently launched in several countries where its games are broadcast. It shows a video with game highlights and players being gradually blocked out by black images. La Liga has also joined forces with several international antipiracy groups, and even linked up with the U.S. government and other sports leagues to step up its fight to eradicate the problem. "We are taking all the necessary measures to make sure that La Liga's content is commercialised legally," said Melcior Soler, the league's director for its anti-piracy and audiovisuals department. "We need to protect our content to guarantee the value and the future of our competition. Revenues from broadcast rights from across the world are crucial for the clubs and are the basis for the high level of the competition." Improving revenue from television rights has been a priority for the Spanish league in its fight against the commercial domination of the Premier League, which has been getting the most lucrative TV deals in European soccer. La Liga says part of the reason for that is that the Premier League has access to a bigger base of subscribers in England, with about 10 million more than the Spanish league has in Spain. Preventing the loss of subscribers to piracy is seen as key to close this financial gap between the leagues. Many people turn to the illegal broadcasts in Spain because the majority of games are on pay TV, and Spain has the lowest take up in satellite and subscription television in Western Europe. Studies by a local anti-piracy group show that one in every five internet users watches games through illegal broadcasts in Spain. In 2015 alone, a total of 141 million matches were watched through illegal means in some 2 million homes, according to the Coalition of Creators and Content Industries. The market value of these retransmissions was estimated in more than 410 million euro. According to the studies, the main justification for viewers of illegal broadcasts was that "football players already earn enough money." "Piracy seriously damages La Liga but also the clubs and the fans," Soler said. "It puts our growth model at risk. Our mission is to protect the audiovisual rights owners who have been following the rules, but also to protect all football fans in our country and the rest of the world." La Liga said its anti-piracy actions have yielded positive results so far. The league said it helped close streaming websites such as Rojadirecta.com and successfully blocked links offering fraudulent access to its matches. This season alone, it said it was able to eliminate 98 percent of illegal links broadcasting its games. It also recently helped authorities dismantle another ring that sold illegal cable-television decoders, one of the most common piracy threats for La Liga. This particular ring sold decoders that allowed consumers to access more than 100 channels for only eight euro per month through card-sharing technology. "It is crucial that La Liga takes on this fight to continue its defense of the integrity of the game in all levels," Soler added.

The general director of Brussels-based anti matchfixing organisation Federbet has said fixing is widespread in Spain's lower divisions. Federbet represents bookmakers and casino owners in Europe, and looks to flag up betting irregularities. Francesco Barranca warned that would continue to be the case unless the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) took steps to eradicate it. His comments came after police charged five people last week in an investigation Eldense lost 12-0 at Barcelona B the previous Saturday. Barranca said he believed some of Eldense's previous results were suspicious and told Cadena Cope radio: "We have monitored Eldense's case.” "We started to see that there were strange bets going on during the game at Cornella [who were 3-1 winners on March 19] and in four other games they played.” "For us it's not surprising because we see similar situations happen every week in third and fourth division games in Spain.” "Since the Paterna vs. Castellon Valencia regional game in December 2015, which is being investigated, there are two or three games that are suspicious in Spain every week. In Spain's fourth division, fixing games is a common practice." Barranca said a lot of money was bet on matches in the Spanish lower divisions, with much of that betting taking place in Asia. "In one third division game in Spain, money moved in betting worldwide is around one million euro per game," he said. "In Eldense's case alarm bells rang because in one game there were half a million euro in bets made at one bookmaker alone." He said there was also "a lot of match-fixing going on, too, in the youth sector. "To fix a game, you need a minimum of one player [to be involved], a goalkeeper," Barranca added. Federbet will send a report to La Liga but urged the RFEF to do more, with Barranca saying: "Until the federation does something, match-fixing will continue."

McLaren driver Fernando Alonso will miss May’s Monaco Grand Prix so he can race in the Indianapolis 500. The double world champion has the full approval and support of McLaren and engine partner Honda, who are having a difficult season in Formula 1. Alonso, 35, will race for the Honda-powered Andretti team on May 28th, and the car will be branded a McLaren. McLaren are yet to decide who will replace him in Monaco that weekend, but Jenson Button is a possibility.

CAV’S VIRUS

JOSE’S EASTER HOPE In the old days, the Easter fixture list was always viewed as being crucial in deciding promotion and relegation issues with two matches in three days on the Saturday and Bank Holiday Monday, writes ALEX TRELINSKI. Forget that and the Easter bunny, as the world of the Premier League, plus TV and European commitments mean that we just get one round of matches to look forward to this weekend. The tastiest morsel (and we are not talking of chocolate eggs) comes on Sunday afternoon, as Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United entertain his old club Chelsea, after a four-nil October drubbing for the Reds at Stamford Bridge back in October. Mourinho doesn’t want egg on his face again, as fifth-placed United are desperate for that Champions League slot, and it appears to be a shoot-out now with neighbours City and rivals Liverpool, after Arsene’s Arsenal came acropper against Big Sam’s Palace. Second-placed Spurs can put a bit of early table pressure on Chelsea ,as they have the early Saturday kick-off against Bournemouth which would bridge the gap to four points, and then they’ll hope for Conte’s boys to slip up the following afternoon. Below them, Manchester City face a Champions League qualifying banana skin at Southampton, and Liverpool, having negotiated a tricky match at Stoke last Saturday, return to the Midlands for an equally testing clash at West Brom. Relegation battlers Hull and Swansea are both away, at Stoke and Watford respectively, whilst Crystal Palace hope to catch a tired Madrid-tripped Leicester at Selhirst Park this Saturday afternoon.

GROW UP RONNIE! British cyclist Mark Cavendish has been diagnosed with the Epstein-Barr virus and faces an uncertain timescale for his recovery, Team Dimension Data say. The 30-time Tour de France stage winner, 31, has not raced for the team since MilanSan Remo on March 18th. "Unfortunately, there is no effective specific treatment against the virus," team doctor Jarrad Van Zuydam said. The South Africa-based team added that Cavendish's "main goal" remained to race at this year's Tour de France.

World Snooker chief Barry Hearn has told the sports biggest superstar, Ronnie O’Sullivan, to “grow up” , ahead of this Saturday’s start of the showpiece World Championships at Sheffields’ Crucible Theatre. The five-time world champion has staged a two-month protest against what he feels is unfair treatment by the sport's authorities, resulting in giving one-word replies to reporters questions in mandatory post-match newspaper and television interviews. The 41-year-old was said to be aggrieved at receiving a disciplinary letter following his criticism of referee Terry Camilleri at the Masters in January, and for swearing at a cameraman he felt had not observed the correct etiquette. But Hearn is mindful of the situation persisting into the World Championship, which begins on Saturday: - "I'm going to be having a word. I would hope that common sense comes back, because what started off as being quite amusing has now become in my view embarrassing for everyone, including Ronnie. It’s time for Ronnie to grow up a little bit now”. O’ Sullivan won his fifth world title in 2013, and he and all of the top 16 players are due to appear at pre-tournament news conference in Sheffield tomorrow.
