SUSPECT BAILED

32-year-old British man has been bailed by a Benidorm judge in connection with the death of a newlywed Scottish woman who fell to her death from an apartment in Benidorm. Kirsty Maxwell, from Livingston in West Lothian, who married her partner Adam in September last year, was part of a group of more than 30 women who had travelled to the resort for a hen weekend. It is understood she left the Costa Blanca apartment she has been sharing with friends on Saturday morning, possibly to ask for medicine from another friend.

T

Friday 5th May 2017

Mrs Maxwell is believed to have entered a room where five British men were staying, which was on the floor above the room being used by the hen party. She fell from the tenth floor balcony of the Apartmentos Payma afterwards. Reports have suggested that the National Police are working on the theory she may have been trying to escape from the room. The 32 year-old British man arrested in connection with the incident has been allowed to leave Spain, and it was reported that he had a history of sexual assault in England.

THREE FOR CORVERA

hree bidders, including French and Argentinian companies, have emerged in the contest to run Murcia’s much-delayed Corvera International Airport. The deadline for companies expressing an interest in the 25-year-franchise passed on Tuesday, with the current operators of San Javier and Alicante-Elche, AENA, in the frame. AENA, run most of the country’s airports and have been joined by French company Edeis(who already run Castellón airport in the northern part of the Valencian region), and Corporación América., which is owned by Argentinian billionaire Eduardo Eurnekian. Five years ago 84-year-old Eurnekian wanted to buy

Corvera airport when relations between the Murcia government and previous management company, Aeromur, started to sour. A number of other companies, including the Manchester Airports group that run Manchester, Stansted, East Midlands, and Bournemouth airports, were said to have expressed an interest last year, with a Manchester group representative visiting Corvera last spring. After Tuesday’s first deadline, a 10-day period kicked in for the three bidders to provide extra details to their submissions, ahead of the next stage lasting 60 days where the regional government will get more information about the plans being put forward by AENA, Edies,

and Corporación América. After the 60 days, Murcia’s development minister, Pedro Rivera, said that it would be up to the regional government to analyse the franchise bids “as quickly as possible, but without undue haste in making the final award. The final process of awarding a Corvera contract

though cannot be completed without a ruling from an independent contractual tribunal that is hearing a complaint from AENA about the framing of the original tender document that they say is not strict enough. There’s also the still on-going legal action againbst the Murcia government from sacked operator Aeromur.

Torrevieja's new market site, close to Aquapark on Avenida Delfina Viudes, will open for business next week on Friday May 12th. Markets councillor Javier Manzanares said that the old area at Calle Salinero had been too cramped, creating traffic problems. The new site will

have space for nearly 700 stalls, as well as better parking and toilet facilities. The five million euro development will also double up as a venue for entertainment and fiestas, with Manzanares claiming that "the new site will also be good for local business and tourism".

the official number of British residents to 63 thousand. In 2013, 130 thousand British people were registered on padrons in the region. The trends though seem to vary from area to area, so whilst Orihuela experienced the biggest loss last year of over five thousand residents, Benidorm actually saw a rise of 121 registrations, whilst further north, Calpe saw a rise of 429 after launching a major registration campaign on the back of losing 10 thousand residents in just five years. Rojales saw a drop of nearly fifteen-hundred, whilst Torrevieja’s figures continue to fall, with a reduction of almost a thousand. Falling padron registrations affect municipal

budgets and also the number of councillors that an authority can have, with Orihuela recently launching a registration campaign, and the British Embassy in Madrid regularly advising UK residents in Spain to make sure they are on the local padron, so that an accurate picture can be built of expats living in the country, and the sort of services they need. The Murcia region is going in the opposite direction to Alicante Province, with an overall rise of just under five thousand people last year, though nonSpaniards fell by three and a half thousand. British residents in Murcia were put at just over 13 thousand, down by 698 on the previous year on a five percent fall.

Last week’s announcement from the National Institute of Statistics that put the population of Alicante Province at one point eight million as of January 1st 2017, has been broken down to reflect what is happening across the various municipalities. In total, the region has lost 125 thousand residents registered on the municipal padron since 2013, with a drop of 16 thousand in 2016. This has been put down to a combination of mainly nonSpaniards not bothering to re-register on the padron or simply leaving the country. In total, almost nine thousand UK registrations disappeared off the padron lists across Alicante Province last year, taking

A driver was helped out of her car with only minor injuries, after it went off a road in the San Miguel de Salinas area on Sunday afternoon (picture from the Informacion newspaper). The incident happened on a bend on the road between the Blue Lagoon urbanisation and San Miguel just before 2.00 pm, with two

other vehicles also involved. The female driver's vehicle had overturned onto the side, and though emergency services were called to free her, she was able to get out of the car with the help of people at the scene. Details of the drivers, including the nationalities involved, were not made public.

Extra people are to be taken on, after a restructuring of fire-fighting services in the Torrevieja and surrounding areas. The Alicante Provincial fire service says that a new Vega Baja south zone is to be created based on the existing fire station in Torrevieja, and it will increase the workforce from 34 to 55 by the end of the year. The zone, besides Torrevieja, will also cover

Los Montesinos, San Miguel de Salinas, and Pilar de la Horadada. Fire staff have also been given an increase in overtime payments. Bosses are hoping that this will bring an end to the disquiet in the ranks over contract disputes, which led to an overtime ban last year, and the more recent daubing of engines with slogans asking for more staff and a reduction in corruption.

No Stopping

Overseas tourist visitor numbers for Spain are continuing to rise, with the latest figures for March showing a six percent hike compared to the same month last year. The details from the National Statistics Institute showed almost five million foreign visitors coming to Spain in March, with British tourists accounting for over a million of the total, being

close to a six percent rise compared to March 2016. The figures showed no negative effects in the wake of lower exchange rates due to last year's Brexit vote. The improved 2017 statistics were especially impressive, as the returns from 2016 included the busy Easter period which fell later this year.

Orihuela council has formally presented a stormwater flood action plan for the Orihuela Costa, that has been produced by the Hidraqua water company. Earlier this year, the authority and Hidraqua said that such a plan would cost 17 million euro to imple-

Elche council is to try out a special liquid spray that will counter the effects of dogs urinating up against lampposts. 81 posts will be used in the pilot scheme on the city's Calle Pedro Juan Perpiñán(pictured), with the waterproof resin-based liquid being applied as from the end of May. The anti-corrosive liquid will prevent the bottom of the posts from deteriorating and turn black because of the doggy urine.

ment, and the formal details were presented by infrastructure councillor Juan Ignacio López-Bas (centre) along with Hidraqua manager Juanjo Alonso, and coastal/beaches councillor Luisa Boné. Details of the plans and proposals are available via

the official municipal website, www.orihuela.es where residents can post their comments. The councillors said it was the first time that such a plan had been produced, but the authority can only realistically implement the project with external funding.

A Late May

Torrevieja’s delayed May fair will now take place in… …October! Fiestas councillor Dominic Perez announced the new dates as being between October 10th and October 15th, after the event had to be postponed due to the late awarding of a contract to any potential fair organisers. Last month Perez claimed that the event would probably only be delayed until June.

Triple Tragedy

Three Polish men died in the early hours of Monday morning when their car collided with two other vehicles on the A-7 motorway south of Murcia City in the Alcantarilla area. Their Volkswagen car was travelling on the southbound carriageway when the incident happened with two cars between the junctions for Caravaca and the La Paz service area. Two of the men died instantly, whilst a third passed away en route to the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital in El Palmar, Murcia City.

Costa Concern

The Federation of Associations of Orihuela Costa (FAOC) claims that the Orihuela Costa is suffering because the Orihuela council budget has not yet been approved for 2017. FAOC says that the Partido Popular-led government team led by mayor Emilio Bascuñana are not able to carry out suitable maintenance across the area and listed the lack of a cultural centre; the state of public parks and play areas; and the quality of local beaches as some of their main concerns.

euro a month to rent, which is one of the largest rental outgoings for the authority. When the coalition team took over running the authority from the Partido Popular nearly two years ago and the time came to

renew the lease, they discovered that no official licensing paperwork had been put in place, including guarantees over health and safety. The new government then set about correcting the adminsitrative issues.

Mesi's Return

A Yorkie dog that went missing for a year has been reunited with her Torrevieja owner. Mesi had been taken to the city's animal shelter after somebody found her walking on the streets and looked after her for a couple of days. Shelter staff found that she had been microchipped and got the contact details to ring a delighted and surprised owner, Miguel Aráez, with the news that Mesi was

safe and well. Miguel and his family had spent most of last summer looking for Mesi and had given up hope. He said that the moment of meeting her again was special, as she leapt up and down at him, knowing who he was. She had appeared to have been well looked after for a time, and actually put on some weight, and a trip to the vet showed that Mesi just needed treatment for an ear infection.

Please Mr. Postman A Torrevieja postman who didn't deliver all the letters he should have, is facing an 18 month jail sentence, if prosecutors get their way. The unnamed Correos worker was set to go on trial this week after hiding some 266 letters over a three year period. He also did not deliver registered mail, but instead dropped correspondence in mail boxes without the appropriate signature. Most of the non-delivered mail appeared to be from utility companies and banks. It's unclear what the motivation was behind the postman's reluctance to do his job.

Healthy Success

Torrevieja's San Luis health centre, based on the San Luis urbanisation, has walked away with a major international award that reflects the high quality of service provided to patients. The Joint Commission

International (JCI) award has been given to only nine other health centres in Spain, one of which is also local, in Crevillente, and is run by the San Luis operator, Ribera Salud, as well. Torrevieja basic health

zone coordinator José Gregorio Betancor said that the award to the San Luis team was a great tribute to the hard work that had been put in to offer the best possible experience for all patients.

No Lines Drawn

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has said that Spain had no "red lines" on Gibraltar after EU leaders granted Madrid a veto over any future Brexit deal with Britain that would involve the territory. "There are no red lines or lines of any other colour" on Gibraltar, Mr Rajoy said at a news conference in which 27 European Union leaders

met without Britain in Brussels to adopt their negotiating position for Brexit talks. The EU 27 guidelines state that "no agreement" after Brexit between the EU and Britain could apply to Gibraltar without a bilateral agreement between Madrid and London. Britain has expressed alarm over the clause

and British Prime Minister Theresa May has insisted she will "never" allow Gibraltar to slip from British control. Gibraltar's leader Fabian Picardo said the treatment called for in the clause "is discriminatory and unfair" and goes against "the principle of sincere cooperation which the EU is committed to."

Evil Challenge A teenage girl who joined in the perilous 'Blue Whale' challenge on Facebook has been admitted to a psychiatric ward in Catalunya, in the first case to be reported in Spain. Said to have started in Russia and then spreading onto South America, the challenge involves completing 50 tasks in 50 days, of increasing difficulty. They start off relatively easy, but by the 50th task, the participant is 'dared' to attempt suicide, with several teenage suicides reported around the world. In the instance involving the 15-year-old in Catalunya, she had got around halfway through the tasks and completed the

one which involved carving a giant whale into her arm. The 'challenge' operates on a 'chain-mail' system, in which participants are first dared by someone else who is part-way through the 50 days, and the newcomer is told that once he or she

starts, they are not allowed to back out. Catalunya's equivalent of the Guardia Civil, the Mossos d'Esquadra, were alerted and the youngster has been placed in a psychiatric ward for her own safety.

Obvious Result

The left-wing Podemos party are to stage a noconfidence vote against Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy in a bid to remove the ruling Partido Popular (PP) from power. The move is bound to fail as the other opposition parties, namely the PSOE socialists and the centrist Ciudadanos will not back it, even though to combine to oust Rajoy.

The move from Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias (pictured) is to do with the increasing number of corruption cases involving the PP, including a recent summons to Rajoy to testify at the National Court. The PSOE though have branded the move 'irresponsible' and Ciudadanos says it will 'not support a circus act'. PSOE spokesman

Antonio Hernando said: “When you want to table a no-confidence motion, you tend to work on it first and announce it later.” He recalled that when Podemos tried to negotiate with the PSOE to form a government, it came to the table with its seating arrangements in Parliament and its ministers' roles already decided and not up for discussion.

Slowly But Surely

Spain’s economy continues to turn in strong growth, making it one of the fastestexpanding in Europe. Preliminary figures from the National Statistics Institute show gross domestic product rose by 0.8 percent in the first three months of this year compared to the previous quarter. It was Spain’s 14th consecutive quarter of growth, with the Partido Popular government predict-

ing that economic growth for the whole year should reach 2.7 percent, which is an upward revision from its previous 2.5 percent forecast. Economy Minister Luis de Guindos also expressed confident about Spain’s unemployment situation, forecasting the sustained economic growth will create one million new jobs in the next two years. The country still has the second higher unemploy-

ment in the eurozone behind Greece, but it is down from 27 percent in 2013. The jobless rate stood at 18.75 percent of the workforce between January and March 2017 having risen for the first time in a year, though the increase is likely linked to the fact that Easter fell outside that period this year. The Easter holiday creates many seasonal, shortterm jobs in Spain’s tourism sector.

New Murcia Man

Fernando López Miras of the Partido Popular was voted in as the Murcia regional government president at the weekend with the support of his PP colleagues. The four Ciudadanos parliamentary representatives abstained, meaning that the other parties didn’t have enough votes to prevent him getting the job. The 33-year-old from Lorca becomes the fourth president in four years, replacing Pedro Antonio Sanchez, who resigned due

to corruption allegations that have been laid down against him. López Miras was sworn in at a formal ceremony on Wednesday at the presidential building in Murcia City, the Palacio de San Esteban, attended by Spain’s deputy prime minister, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, and witnessed by his predecessor Pedro Antonio Sanchez (stood behind), who despite his difficulties is still in charge of the Partido Popular in Murcia.

Two Guardia Civil officers came to the rescue of a nineyear-old British boy who was suffering with breathing problems in a Benidorm area restaurant after eating chips that had been fried in oil that had been used to fry fish, something that he is allergic to. The incident happened in Finestrat on Monday afternoon, with the boy, who lives with his family in La Nucia, reported as being “barely able to breathe”. The Guardia officers rushed him in their car to La Vila’s Comarcal hospital, where he was treated, and then subsequently discharged.

Monte Celebrate

Just Not Enough

Los Montesinos was awash with noise and colour on Sunday evening as the CD Montesinos football team went on a parade of the town to celebrate becoming champions of the Valencia Segunda regional division group 16. The side had achieved the title the previous weekend, and after winning their last match 7-1 against Grupo Caliche (report on page 46), the squad went to the local church to present flowers, before appearing on the balcony of the Montesinos town hall, with a firework display to round off the celebrations.

Speedsters Trapped Over 31 thousand motorists were caught speeding during the week after Easter, according to the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT). Local and regional police also carried out their own checks, which must also be added to the figures. The Guardia Civil set up speed traps on highways across Spain in a six day campaign from April 17th, and found that around one in 20 drivers were over the limit. Four of those arrested were found to have smashed the limit by 80 kilometres an hour.

A group may take the Spanish government to court if it does not go through with a pledge to take 19 thousand refugees into the country. Sonia Ros of the Stop Mare Mortum campaign (pictured centre) says that Spain is 'committing a clear breach'of its pledge to the European Commission to take in 19,449 war victims in refugee camps in Greece and Italy by September this

year. Speaking to reporters at a pilot boat off Barcelona pier, Ros said that only 886 refugees from Greece and Italy (not even five per cent of the agreed total) have come to Spain, though the full total is just over a thousand due to conflict victims taken in from camps in Turkey and Lebanon. But Spain is not the only one failing in its duty to families fleeing for their lives,

with Ros claiming that the average EU country has only resettled 17 percent of the numbers of refugees that had been promised. Isabel Baixeras of the Barcelona College of Law Defence Commission (ICAB). said that a formal request to the Spanish government to act was sent on April 21st, and if the reply is not positive, then the matter could go legal with a hearing in the Supreme Court.

Gold Plated Pensions – Why now is a Good Time to Cash In Did you know that due to "low interest rates" at the moment, your Final Salary Pension transfer value could now be a small fortune!! STOP - before you start taking your pension speak to Blacktower. Opportunities like this don't come along more than once in a lifetime! Here is a typical case recently completed by myself:

to secure their pension pots. As schemes look to reduce their liabilities, sometimes offering these enhanced rates to get members off their books, expats are taking advantage. In some cases, they could be offered more than 20 times the value of the annual pension available normally on retirement. Transferring the Cash Value to a Recognised Overseas Pension or UK SIPP (Self Invested Personal Pension) allows you to protect your pension funds in a new scheme. These schemes allow for flexible drawdown, and you can take a lump sum from the age of 55. Unlike “Final Salary” (DB) schemes, unused funds are also available to beneficiaries.

Peter and Anne S from Bradford were able to retire early to Spain by transferring their UK Final Salary Pensions. (Also known as (DB) or Defined Benefit schemes). Peter (age 58) had worked for a large UK Bank for over 20 years whilst Anne (age 56) had worked for a Financial Services company for over 30 years. Both were members of their companies' Final Salary pension schemes, although these had both been closed to future members with new contributory schemes replacing them. Louise, their only daughter, had recently relocated to Spain due to work commitments, and they were keen to join her by retiring early and moving to Spain themselves. However, the Normal Retirement date for them both was 60 years of age with their current work pensions. This meant they would have had to pay exit penalties if they wanted to retire early and draw their pensions. Having been referred to us we were able to look at some alternative options for them. We issued each of the pension schemes with a Letter of Authority which enabled us to liaise with the pension schemes on their behalf. The current schemes were offering annual pensions of £9,800 and £12,500 respectively, were they to retire at 60. Our reports showed that both pension schemes were in deficit meaning that they could be at risk of defaulting in the future. (As happened with BHS last year.) Cash equivalent transfer values were requested and Peter was offered £289,870 whilst Anne was offered a staggering £474,843 to exit her scheme! These high valuations are typical of the transfer values being obtained now. They

are at record highs because pension schemes are keen to reduce their balance sheets. Also, the current low interest rates (which affect the calculations) ensure that the transfer values being obtained now are exceptionally high. With our help, Peter and Anne were able to transfer these amounts to new overseas pension schemes backed by one of the largest insurance companies in the world. They were both able to take 25% tax free lumps sums which amounted to in £335,685 total. These funds have been used to buy their dream property in Spain and unsurprisingly they have both been able to retire years earlier than they anticipated. Along with the proceeds from the sale of their property in the UK, they still have total funds of over half a million pounds in their new pension schemes. Mortgage free, they can draw a comfortable income from these pensions knowing that any residual funds will be available as inheritance to their daughter. Final salary schemes usually provide a 50% spouse’s pension, however, on second death they normally finish and do not provide any funds for beneficiaries after this.

Act now and you too can take advantage. Many Expats, and people planning to move or retire to Spain, are using their right to request a transfer value in order

An animal has died and several others have suffered serious injury from exposure to cleaning products, according to the UK animal charity, the PDSA. In one particularly harrowing case, the charity said its vets had to euthanize a dog after they were exposed to laundry detergent which caused severe caustic burns to their paws, legs and mouth. Other cases in the past 12 months include a cat that was left foaming at the mouth after he licked a floor that had just been treated with disinfectant and a dog who suffered chemical burns to his scrotum after coming into contact with a cleaning product on the floor. PDSA also dealt with a number of emergency incidents where pets had been poisoned by either ingesting or coming into contact with bleach. Rebecca Ashman, PDSA vet, said: “With many households doing their spring cleaning, it’s important to ensure products are safe to use around pets.” “Millions of us use bleach, oven cleaner, dishwasher tablets and laundry detergents all the time in the home but we need to realise how dangerous they can be to our pets.” “Products such as bleach and detergents are highly corrosive and cause permanent and even life-threatening damage to a pet’s skin or insides if swallowed.” “Some pets will naturally explore or chew boxes and containers, so it’s really important to keep cleaning

Using products at the correct dilution also helps to ensure pets don’t come into contact with concentrated chemicals.” Rebecca added that it was vital for owners to seek emergency veterinary treatment straight away if they suspect their pet has come into contact with anything corrosive or poisonous. Among the symptoms pet owners should be on the alert for if their animals have been exposed to toxic chemicals are: • Ulcerated or irritated skin including inside the mouth • Vomiting or coughing • Difficulty eating and excessive salivation/foaming at the mouth • Pawing at the mouth She said: “It’s important to seek veterinary advice urgently. Don’t try to make your pet sick as this can sometimes cause further harm.” “In an emergency situation it’s also useful to let the vet know as much as possible about the offending substance, so they can give the appropriate treatment. So always keep the packaging and take it with you if you need to go to the vet”

Make A Topsy Turvey Planter From A Plastic Bottle!

Here's what you'll need: 2-liter bottle or juice carton Garbage bag Duct tape Tomato plant Utility knife Paper towel Cotton balls Twine 1. Using the knife, carefully cut off the bottom of your bottle or carton. 2. Roll up a garbage bag around your arm and

insert into the bottle. Once inside, loosen the bag and try to spread it evenly within the bottle. The reason I used the black bag was to keep the roots covered and hopefully warm in the sun. 3. Fold the top edge of the bag over the bottle and secure with duct tape. 4. Wrap a tomato plant with paper towel and carefully insert into the bottle and out through the

spout. The towel will help keep the soil together. 5. Fill the rest of the bottle with soil. 6. Wrap some twine or string at the mouth of the bottle, stretching along the length of the body, and tape in place. 7. Stuff some cotton balls through the bottom opening to help keep water in. 8. Hang in a sunny spot and water thoroughly.

Wheel of Fortune

Torrevieja may get it's own version of the London Eye, with proposals being touted to have a ferris wheel up to 60 metres high installed in the port area of the city. Representatives of a Dutch company, SkyView Attractions, met with tourism councillor Fanny Serrano

last week, though Serrano told the Informacion newspaper that these were only proposals, though she felt that the project was viable. A plan for the company to put in a wheel in Benidorm had to be scrapped due to a lack of space, but there are many hurdles still to be

crossed for anything to happen in Torrevieja. SkyView are now set to carry out a feasibility study to see if a Torrevieja Eye would make economic sense. One of the SkyView wheels is pictured at Schveningen Pier at The Hague in Holland.

Plans for a national tax on sugary drinks and an 'environmental' levy will only be applied if Spain does meet its national debt target this year, therefore breaking the orders of the European Union. Spain has been mandated by Brussels to cut its deficit to 3.1% of its GDP, meaning if the GDP rises, the debt target will go down – but if it

falls, the debt becomes larger and the government will have to increase tax income. Its four-year plan will involve clawing back between €300 million in 'green' tax and €200m in soft-drink tax – half a billion in total – but will be used as a contingency plan only rather than being applied automatically, as was originally the idea for this year.

The debt reduction plan presented to Brussels, which covers the years 2017 to 2020 inclusive, also refers to tackling tax fraud. Part of this could mean the selfemployed and companies may eventually have to present their IVA declarations monthly rather than quarterly, so the tax authority can keep a closer check on their accounts.

Combine the water, sugar, yeast and butter in the bowl of a stand mixer and mix with the dough hook until combined. Allow the dough to sit for 5 minutes. Add the salt and flour and mix on low speed until combined. Increase the speed to medium and continue kneading until the dough is smooth and begins to pull away from the side of the bowl, about 3 to 4 minutes. If the dough appears too wet, add some additional flour, one tablespoon at a time. Remove the dough from the bowl, place on a flat surface and knead into a ball with your hands. Oil a bowl with some vegetable oil, add the dough and turn to coat with the oil. Cover with a clean towel or cling film and place in a warm spot until the dough doubles in size, about one hour. Preheat the oven to 220°C / gas mark 7. Bring the water to a boil in a small roasting pan over high heat and add the bicarbonate of soda. Remove the dough from the bowl and place it on a flat surface. Divide into eight equal pieces, about 130g to 140g each. Roll each piece into a long rope measuring 55cm and shape: take the right side and cross over to the left. Cross right to left again and flip up. Boil the pretzels in the water solution, two at a time, for 30 seconds, splashing the tops with the warmed water using a spoon. Remove with a large flat slotted spatula. Place four pretzels on each baking sheet, brush the tops with the egg wash and season liberally with the salt. Place into the oven and bake for 15 to 18 minutes until golden brown. Remove the pretzels to a baking rack and allow to rest for five minutes before eating. Serve with the sauces for dipping as desired.

Colder or warmer offices could cut rates of diabetes and obesity, study finds Arguments over the office thermostat have become part of everyday life.

“There are indications that cardiovascular parameters may be positively affected by regular exposure to heat and cold.”

But a new academic paper suggests abandoning the usual compromise of about 21 to 22 degrees Celsius could help reduce levels of obesity and diabetes as both colder and warmer temperatures increase the body’s metabolism.

They said this “probably” did not mean people should “suffer from discomfort” for the sake of their health, either because people would get used to it or might actually begin to enjoy the rise and fall of the mercury.

For example, a couple of working weeks in “mild cold” could have an effect on diabetes comparable to “the best available” drugs and exercise techniques, the researchers said.

“Prolonged temporal excursions outside the thermal comfort zone result in acclimatisation resulting in increased comfort ratings,” the paper said.

They also highlighted the historic increase in temperatures considered comfortable in homes and offices during winter and a decrease in summer.

“Low or high temperatures in a dynamic thermal environment may be perceived as acceptable or even pleasant.”

For example, a Dutch newspaper in 1872 reported that a comfortable room temperature was between 13C and 15C.

assumed that stable fixed indoor temperatures would satisfy comfort and health in most people.

The lead author of the study, Professor Wouter van Marken Lichtenbelt, of Maastricht University, said: “It has previously been

“However, this research indicates that mild cold and variable temperatures may have a positive effect on our health and at the same time are acceptable or even may

create pleasure.” The paper, published in the journal Building Research & Information, said: “The concepts of comfort and health may be related but are not synonyms. “New knowledge has been gathered regarding meta-

bolic health effects of temperature exposure outside the human thermal comfort zone. “Mild cold and warm environments increase metabolism, thereby targeting obesity by counterbalancing excess energy intake. Furthermore, mild cold influ-

ences glucose metabolism. “Ten days of intermittent mild cold exposure in type 2 diabetes patients increased insulin sensitivity, and thereby glucose handling by more than 40 per cent. This is comparable with the best available pharmaceutical or physical activity therapies.

New glaucoma test could save millions from blindness "It might be possible to treat the main cause of permanent blindness before people notice any loss of vision," BBC News report. A proof of concept study of early testing for glaucoma – the most common cause of sight loss – had promising results. In glaucoma, the light-sensitive cells of the retinal nerve die, usually because of increased pressure in the eye. The damage to the nerve, which is irreversible,

causes progressive loss of vision. Because people with glaucoma often don't have symptoms in the early stages of the disease, a lot of damage may be done before it is picked up. Diagnosing glaucoma early would allow earlier treatment to relieve pressure in the eye, and may prevent sight loss. The new technique involves injecting people with a fluorescent dye (thankfully into the blood-

stream, not the eye), and taking images of the eye. Dying retinal nerve cells show up as white spots on the image. Researchers compared images from eight people with early glaucoma and eight healthy people, and showed that white spots were more than twice as common in people with glaucoma. They also seemed more common in people whose glaucoma got worse quickly over

time. However, the technique needs to be tested in largescale studies to confirm the result as well as find out more about any safety issues. The study reinforces the importance of having regular eye tests as these can often pick up glaucoma before it becomes a significant problem. You should have an eye test at least every two years.

They suggested further research into temperature and comfort in “actual living conditions”. “This information is needed to support the design of healthy, comfortable and energy-friendly indoor environments,” the researchers said.

Can you drink Your Tap Water? The quality of tap water in many parts of the world is continuously improving especially in the less developed regions of the world. However, the treatment and regulation of tap water are typically controlled by town and city governments, and while most tap water quality will meet the criteria of an area, the worry is that the standards observed today are outdated and not strict enough. Many of the water regulatory standards used today were set decades ago when pollution was at a lower level. Traditionally Tap water is checked for solid particles like lead, as well as microbes like E. coli and Coliform. But several studies have identified in tap water many common drugs including antibiotics, blood pressure medications and

reduces IQ levels. Bottled water is not a safe alternative to tap water for the simple reason that the bottled water industry is far less regulated than tap water. There are many reports of bottled water companies filling bottles directly from the tap. Researching a bottled water brand before making a purchase is a good idea. Tap water is most likely the safest water to drink in many cities and towns. However, to be on the safe side especially if you have a history of a chronic disease, it may be wise to install a filtration system.

Muscle-building 'exercise pill' one step closer, scientists say A muscle-building “exercise pill” that could reduce visits to the gym has come a step closer with the publication of a new study focusing on a protein that keeps us weak. Scientists found that suppressing production of the protein myostatin increased

muscle mass and led to significant improvements in markers of heart and kidney health. Although the research was conducted in mice, the team hopes that further down the road it will lead to human treatments. Lead researcher Joshua

Butcher, from Augusta University in the US state of Georgia, said: “Ultimately, the goal of our research would be to create a pill that mimics the effect of exercise and protects against obesity. “A pill that inhibits myostatin could also have applications for muscle-wasting

diseases, such as cancer, muscle dystrophy and Aids.” Myostatin is known to be a powerful “brake” that holds back skeletal muscle growth. Studies suggest that obese people produce more of the protein, making it harder for them to exercise and build up muscle. “Given that exercise is one of the most effective interventions for obesity, this creates a cycle by which a person becomes trapped in obesity,” said Dr Butcher. The researchers bred four groups of lean and obese mice that were genetically

programmed either to produce uninhibited levels of myostatin or to be completely lacking in the protein. As expected, mice with no myostatin became markedly more muscular. Obese mice unable to produce myostatin remained fat, but they were also stronger and showed markers of heart and metabolic health on a par with their lean counterparts. They were in dramatically better shape than obese mice with unrestricted myostatin production. Dr Butcher added: “In our

muscular obese mouse, despite full presentation of obesity, it appears that several of these key pathologies are prevented. “While much more research is needed, at this point myostatin appears to be a very promising pathway for protection against obesity-derived cardiometabolic dysfunction.” The research was presented at the American Physiological Society's annual meeting, Experimental Biology 2017, in Chicago.

Valencian dinosaurs reclaim their lands Camins de dinosaures (Dinosaur Trails) is a proposal that will allow you to follow and discover the vast, varied paleontological heritage of the Region of Valencia.

Millions of years ago, dinosaurs ruled supreme over the world and they have left their tracks throughout the entirety of the Region of Valencia. That is why the Camins de dinosaures (Dinosaur Trails) initiative has been launched, as a proposal to travel across the region of Valencia and discover its numerous and varied paleontological heritage. The route features 30 teaching resources concerning palaeontology that are spread across a number of municipalities. Delve into a mysterious era and discover the fearsome lizards of the Valencian Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Alcoi, Rojales, Elx, Guardamar del Segura, Agost, Millares, Alpuente, Chera, Enguera, Requena, Valencia, BejĂs, Forcall, Cinctorres, Onda, Morella, Ribesalbes, Portell, and Sant Mateu are the towns where you will find clues to learn more about the life of the reptiles that ruled the world until an asteroid wiped them off the face of the Earth 65 million years ago. To this day, over ten digs with dinosaur ichnites (fossilised footprints) have been uncovered in the Region of Valencia. All of them have been declared Assets of Cultural Interest, and they all feature a number of facilities that allow tourists to access and enjoy them. Moreover, the museums in Alpuente and Morella, which contain large-sized dinosaur skeletons and bones are worth a visit, as is the Natural Science Museum of Valencia, which features the holotype of the Losillasaurus giganteus sauropod, remains from the Dacentrurus armatus stegosaur and a replica of an Allosaurus fragilis.

Torrevieja Beaches

By Julie Day Many of its beaches (La Mata, Los Locos, El Cura, Los Naufragos, and Cabo Cervera, Playa del Acequión) hold the prestigious ISO 14001 certificate. This is the highest award in Environmental Management for both the water and the sand. Blue Flags denoting the award are displayed at the various beaches. In total Torrevieja has around 20km of coastline. All the beaches are easily accessible from the N332. In and around Torrevieja itself there are many differing beaches. To the north is La Mata, a particularly popular location, being less crowded than some in the main season. This is the town’s largest beach, made up of fine sand, stretching some 2 km. It also has volleyball nets and is a centre for watersports. In the central part of the town’s coastline lies Cape Cervera beach, which in turn gives way to collection of small coves such as Mojón, Higuera, and Gambote. Other popular beaches adjacent to Torrevieja are Los Locos and El Cura, again, made up of fine sand and safe sea conditions. The most southern beach is Playa del Acequión, which is located near the port and the saltworks. It is characterized by lots of small fishing boats and many beachside bars and cafes. The main beaches provide watersport facilities including pedalos and jet skis. Playa de Los Locos provides limited mobility access. There is a promenade running along the length of the coast, just two minutes from the bustling town centre itself. This is especially popular with locals on Sunday mornings where many can be seen taking a stroll in their ‘Sunday Best’ after having been to church. It is also popular with locals in the evening. In addition to the many bars and cafes here, there are also ice cream parlours offering up to 100 different flavours. This main promenade is also famous for its elaborate handcrafted sand sculptures, the subject of many holiday snapshots. As well as the sandy beaches alongside the promenade, there are also manmade bays. These are particularly safe areas for swimming for young children. To the southern end there is the statue of the Hombre del Mar. For those who like walking, Torrevieja also has a long breakwater to the front of the marina. It is also a favoured location for those who like fishing. There are also plans for the whole of the coastline to be made into a single complete walkway, much of which is in place already. At the town’s marinas, there are two diving centres and boat charter companies. A wide range of watersports are available including sailing, windsurfing, diving, and water skiing. Nearby, there is also the town’s Aqua Park.

Every year, the program is structured under a motto that tries to shed light on the problems our society faces. In this edition, under the motto “PorMayores” (For the Elderly), the festival seeks to shift our attention to the passage of time and reflecting on how each one of us faces this situation during our life, taking on new roles and situations which aren’t always so easy to adjust to.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

It’s sadly farewell to Peter Kay’s Car Share after a final outing this week on BBC 1, and a total of just ten episodes full of quality. It was literally a sad end as well with Peter’s character of John unable to commit to Kayleigh (Sian Gibson), and that it was it for the Car Share….literally. Peter Kay has said that we won’t do any more episodes because there is nothing more to say and it is best to get out on a high, taking a leaf out of the John Cleese and Connie Booth book nearly 40 years ago when they said that a dozen episodes of Fawlty Towers was enough. Peter Kay and Sian Gibson formed a compelling double act along with the great soundtrack of Forever FM on the car radio, and the hilarious triple-header of the drunken Smurf joining them a couple of weeks ago! The good news though is that Peter Kay has confirmed that he has written a third series of Phoenix Nights, admittedly 15 years ago, and its now waiting in the wings to be produced. I think the state of British TV

comedy is deplorable with Kay proving that if you come up with some good, it will be loved and appreciated very quickly. Come back soon with Phoenix Nights! Something else that finished this week was Line of Duty (BBC 1) with a sensational finale that had absolutely everything you can want about it, as well as some nuggets for us loyal fans that watched the show pop up for the first time some five years ago on BBC 2. I just cannot imagine any other British drama being as good as this for the remainder of the year, as the finale fizzed with fantastic acting and a great script from creator Jed Mercurio. We will have to be patient for series five as Mercurio is still writing it and it will not be shot until next year, but give me quality over quantity anytime, of which Line of Duty is a great example. Another ender has been All Round to Mrs Brown’s (BBC 1), which not surprisingly will be back next year, after becoming a mega Saturday night. It was fun all

the way, and I return to my comments a few weeks ago that it needs a quarter of an hour taken off the run time to make it even better. Besides that quibble, I loved it. I bring you news of the biggest UK TV drama turkey of the year, and like with the final series of The Fall in 2016, it has come from the most surprising source, namely the pen of Oscarwinning writer John Ridley (12 Years a Slave ). What could possibly go wrong with Ridley’s story (which he directed as well), Guerilla (Sky Atlantic), which tells the story of two lovers taking a stand amidst the struggle against racism in early seventies London? I’ve hung fire to write about this after watching three episodes (there are only three more left), in the misgiven hope that it would get better, but despite the horrowing material and some good performances, I found it utterly boring and have given up on it. The story should grab you by the throat but it simply didn’t, and I felt nothing for any of

the characters, which was hardly the point of Guerilla. I think it would have worked as a movie, and needless to say it will get nominated for a string of awards, but like with Line of Duty being fantastic, I don’t think I will see a more boring drama this year, which is a massive pity because this should have been brilliant. Norman Bates has just

been to a local hardware store to buy some new shower curtains, which might just give you a wee bit of an indictation of what might be happening soon in the final series episode of Bates Motel (Universal Channel). Apparently pop star Rihanna will be a guest wanting a shower, and I might understand psycho Norman’s actions, if he

heard some of her records! Seriously though, this “sleeper” show deserves far greater recognition than it has got, with Brit-actor Freddie Highmore getting right under the skin of Norman’s dual-personality. It’s a well -played reliable drama with plenty of very black humour elements which I’ve loved over the last four years or so.

Bold and provocative stories celebrate the LGBTQ community

The BBC have announced Gay Britannia, a season of programming marking the 50th anniversary of The Sexual Offences Act 1967, which partially decriminalised homosexual acts that took place in private between two men over the age of 21. Led by programming on BBC Two and BBC Four, with other content across BBC radio and online, the Gay Britannia season will feature bold and provocative stories that celebrate the LGBTQ community as well as challenging existing preconceptions and prejudices. The season will also cast a fresh light on the history of gay Britain, as well as highlighting just what it means to be gay in Britain today. Contributors

announced today include Susan Calman, Andrew Scott, Val McDermid, Olly Alexander, Sandi Toksvig and Simon Callow. Patrick Holland, Channel Controller BBC Two, says: “This is a rich and compelling set of programmes that challenge us all. From the heart-breaking testimony of the men who lived through the years before partial decriminalisation in Against The Law and Patrick Gale’s intensely personal Man In An Orange Shirt, to a documentary revealing the experience of people facing discrimination in the UK today, this season is a powerful examination of how far we have come whilst also exploring how much further we have to travel.”

Lookalikes returns to Channel 4

Following the success of the pilot episode and subsequent series, Channel 4 has commissioned another series of structured reality show ‘Lookalikes’. The scripted comedy / reality show hybrid follows the antics of two of Britain’s premier lookalike agencies, run by long suffering David Beckham impersonator Andy Harmer, and his friend turned rival, David Brent alter ego, Tim Oliver. Representing everyone from ‘Tom Cruise' to 'Gordon Ramsay', ‘Samuel L Jackson' to ‘’Katie Price’, Andy and Tim are constantly having to keep their roster up to date, battling each other to sign up fresh talent and bring in more work. Just like their celebrity alter egos, the lookalikes aren't always the most straightforward people to manage, and every job brings high drama, difficult clients and

some questionable management decisions. The show charts the antics of the agency and the almost-famous faces on their books as they struggle with the pitfalls of being in the lookalikes world and the fluctuating popularity of their celebrity lookalikes. The tongue-in-cheek- series which mixes scripted comedy with structured reality show techniques, offers a wry and irreverent take on famous faces to chart the highs and lows of the entertainment industry. Jonathan Stadlen, Executive Producer for Knickerbockerglory says, “Thanks to Channel 4 giving us another series, we've been able to assemble the best lookalikes money can buy from the UK and across the globe to star in series two, which is even more of a scripted comedy / reality hybrid than before.”

The Keith & Paddy Picture Show

Mexico: Earth's Festival Of Life

Sunday - BBC Two

Saturday - ITV The Keith and Paddy Picture Show is an affectionate and humorous tribute to some of Keith and Paddy’s favourite movies of all time. Each week they will attempt to recreate an iconic film, with the help of an all-star celebrity cast.

Each half hour episode will be a mix of high-end film parodies and behind-the-scenes mock-doc footage following the boys as they endeavour to bring their recreations to life. What could possibly go wrong…? This week it's Keith and Paddy's version of Dirty Dancing featuring Larry Lamb, Jessica Hynes, John Barrowman and Kimberly Wyatt.

Usain Bolt: The Final Chapter Saturday - BBC One At London's World Championships this August, Usain Bolt will run the final race of his golden career. Steve Cram travelled to Kingston, Jamaica, to speak exclusively to Bolt about his hopes for the summer and what the future holds when he finally steps off the track. Bolt's retirement will be a

huge loss for global sport as he has been such a positive influence, and in this interview he speaks about the current state of athletics, its controversies and the next generation of athletes. We also hear from those closest to Usain, including his father, former teachers and friends, to find out more about the man whom many consider to be one of the greatest athletes of all time.

Mexico is a vast country, more than two thousand miles long, dominated by a great chain of mountains, the Sierra Madre. Journey down this rocky spine and you’ll discover an amazing diversity of life, from black bears and orchid bees to resplendent quetzals and millions of monarch butterflies. This is a land where giant volcanoes simmer and ancient and modern cultures collide in a festival of life. In episode one we travel to the far northeast of Mexico to the Serranias del Burro, a vital outpost for Mexico’s black bears, where there is little groundwater for bears to drink. The grandest mountain vistas are found in the northwest of the country, including the Copper Canyon which covers 25,000 square miles and is home to the Rarámuri, who have lived in these mountains for more than 2,000 years. Perhaps the most famous mountain product is tequila, made from the blue agave plant. We meet a 16 year-old agave farmer, a jimador, harvesting plants with his uncle. Mexico’s fertile volcanic heartland gave rise to great ancient empires, and their ruins still pepper the mountains today. In an abandoned Aztec mountain shrine we meet a band of coatis that have made it their home. These adaptable animals have a steady of supply of food on their doorstep, brought in by unwitting tourists. In the far south of Mexico, where the Sierra Madre meets the Pacific, the mountains catch moisture coming in off the ocean, creating a rich cloud forest. This is home to many rare creatures, including a mythical creature whose feathers were treasured more than gold by the Aztecs - the resplendent quetzal. For thousands of years the people living in Mexico’s mountains have believed these butterflies are the spirits of the dead. Their arrival in winter coincides with Mexico’s most spectacular festival, Dia de los Muertos - The Day Of The Dead.

Having just returned from holiday, I downloaded my pictures from my Samsung tablet to my PC. After adjusting them with Paint Shop Pro and putting them in a folder I now want to download this folder to my tablet to show to my friends. How do I download the folder from my PC to my tablet? Thanks Bob

I am on holiday here in Spain, have my laptop with me which is windows 7. I can receive emails but not send or reply, can you help me? Gail

Hi Bob, usually this is done either by connecting your tablet using a Hi Gail, this is likely caused by your Internet Service Provider (back at USB cable to your computer, the tablet then appears like an external home) not allowing email to be sent from anywhere other than their nethard drive on your computer or by removing the SD card from the table work. So because you are not connected to your own ADSL Internet and putting that into your computer and transferring them in that way. you cannot send email. Usually most email providers allow you to use some type of webmail service, if you try that they you should be able to send email.

Spain welcomes an average of a million foreign tourists, who travelled to the country mainly to play golf, each year, according to a report by Golf Business Partners. The report titled "The Impact Of Golf On Spain" ranked Spain as the world's second in terms of the number of arrivals for this purpose, only surpassed by the United States. Pictured above is the El Saler course near Valencia City. "Spain is a leading country in terms of tourism and regarding golf it is the same," Jose Miragalla, responsible for marketing at the Royal Spanish Golf Federation. "The quality of service and infrastructure at a national level, along with the good weather, is absolutely key, with culture and gastronomy also important. I think it is an ideal country to receive any kind of tourist," he said. According to the report, in 2016 there were 272,280 Spanish citizens affiliated to the Federation, but the figure topped 1 million when foreigners are included. The activity generates around 400 million euro every year with people spending average a week in four and five-star hotels. The sector highlights that this kind of tourism is very good for the country, making great contributions to the gross domestic product. According to the report, they spend 74.8 percent more than other tourists due to their high purchasing power with a daily spending of 171.4 euro. Playing golf means social gatherings that go from spending time with family and friends to business meetings, explained Miragalla. "It is true that many CEOs play golf and instead of having a formal meeting at the office they go to play golf and having a more relaxing meeting and build networking in a different way," said Miragalla. Spain is promoting the sport among the public through public golf courses and golf at schools. "Spain is boosting public golf courses, trying also to make golf closer to cities, so that people who live in the cities do not have to travel a long distance to practice," said Miragalla. "The Spanish Federation is promoting golf at schools as part of the subject of physical education. Children from every kind of school, private or public, can have the opportunity of playing golf for the first time," he added. There are a total of 359 golf courses in Spain, plus 21 rustics and 95 Pitch & Putts and schools.

Madrid's Anti-Doping testing Laboratory has had its suspension lifted by the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada). The laboratory was sanctioned almost two years ago after Wada said the Spanish anti-doping agency AEPSAD had failed to comply with international standards. The suspension had prevented the Madrid lab from carrying out any Wada-related anti-doping activities including all analyses of urine and blood samples. Wada said it was confident Madrid would "operate to high standards." AEPSAD (Agencia

Espanola de Proteccion de la Salud en el Deporte) had missed a deadline for required changes to its drugtesting procedures, but its removal from Wada's noncompliant list in March was followed by an inspection of the Madrid laboratory. "We would like to thank the laboratory for their continued cooperation throughout this process," said Wada director general Olivier Niggli. "This decision allows the laboratory to resume all of its anti-doping activities, including all analyses of urine and blood samples, with immediate effect."

The Man To Beat

Rafael Nadal hailed a "dream start" to his clay court season after romping to his 10th Barcelona Open on Sunday after sweeping aside Austria's Dominic Thiem 6-4, 6-1. The Spaniard also claimed his 10th title at the Monte Carlo Masters the previous week as he gears up for to go for his 10th French Open title later this month. "It is two consecutive weeks winning, in Monte Carlo and here, two special tournaments for me, it is a

dream start on clay," said Nadal. "It means a lot for me to reach number 10 here in Barcelona, in front of the people of my club, I am very happy and emotional." Nadal won in Barcelona between 2005-2009, 201113 and now in the last two years. The 14-time Grand Slam champion also looks like the man to beat at Roland Garros after winning on a Barcelona court named after him and where he didn't drop a set all week.

Triathlon Triumphs

Sports multi-tasking was the order of the day on Sunday with sea swimming, running, and cycling skills put to the test in San Pedro del Pinatar’s ninth Marina de las Salinas triathlon, which decided the leading triathletes in the Murcia region. 245 competitors took part in the men’s category, with Arturo Galián, from the Triathlon Club Murcia Unidata, doing the three segments of the course in

just over 58 minutes, to be a clear winner with a margin of 30 seconds. The women’s race was won by the current Spanish duathlon junior champion, Laura Durán from CT Caravaca, who dominated from start to finish and led each one of her sections. San Pedro also hosted the national university triathlon championships, which were organised by UCAM in Murcia.

Torry still trail safety in the form of Bunol by three points, a massive gap, given there are only two games left to play. If they do worse than Bunol next weekend, then Torry’s tenure in the Valencia third division is done and dusted. It was a tentative first quarter of an hour at the Nelson Mandela stadium on Sunday, with neither side looking as though they had much to offer by way of exciting play and goal scoring opportunities. Steadily though, Torry seized the initiative and the game played out mainly in the Crevillente half. Lewis Allen whizzed a 30 yard free kick just wide of the angle, then Beltran got the ball on his favoured left foot and just missed the same upright by an equally minute margin. Martin was robust in the middle of the park, whilst Vicente Boix was having a stormer. Crisp in his tackling, he was even more impressive in his dashes upfield, where he showed a clean pair of heels to the opposition and sent over a series of inviting crosses. The mean Crevillente defence though dealt with these in their stride. Fans expecting to see

former Torry captain Jorge were disappointed as he did not feature for the visitors, being suspended for this contest, sent off the previous weekend, but his colleagues were managing in his absence. At times they were struggling to cope with the exuberance and sheer determination of Lewis Allen, but by and large they were restricting clear cut chances to a minimum. Torry needed a goal, especially as the game progressed and they seemed to have stifled the visitor's attack. Midway through the second half Torry made the vital breakthrough. They had been playing some intricate play and this time Luis Carlos turned provider, spraying a sweet curling cross into the middle. With calm and confidence, it was collected by Duran who swivelled inside the box and cracked the ball into the net in the 65th minute via the underside of the bar. For a split second fans wondered if the goal would stand, as it had bounced out of the net, but the eagle-eyed assistant indicated it had crossed the line and players celebrated with as much relief as joy. More chances were created by a rampant Torry who were showing all their finer qualities as manager Pedreño barked out his

orders from the touchline. Molina came on for the listless Borja Mir on the hour mark and made his mark with several fine dribbles and moves. Torry should have extended their lead when he made a grease lightning break from his own half right down to the opposition byeline. Duran had sprinted into the box and all Molina had to do was cut the ball back to him and he would have slotted it home. Instead he hit it high to the far post, half creating a much more difficult chance for Luis Carlos, which he could not manage. Torry are three points behind Bunol and five behind Paterna, whom Torry visit on Sunday. An away victory and Paterna would then become one of the sides battling for their survival on the final day of the season. But that entails Torry winning at a very tough venue, though Paterna are dramatically out of form, having only won once in their last eleven games, that win being on February 19th. On the other hand, they have only suffered one home defeat in that same period, and Torry know that this is a must win match, but they will be boosted by the fact that Bunol have a tough task at Villarreal who need to win to keep their hopes alive of getting into the play-offs.

Almoradi humbly surrendered their Valencian third division status away to a side that they had to beat to have any chance of staying up, and an Almoradi win would have closed the gap on Bunol and safety to five points, with two matches left. Previous coach Joserra (pictured), who took over from the sacked Fran Rodríguez in December, was shown the door before this embarassing performance at Bunol after a row last week with the club president Paco Albadalejo. Joserra might have thought himself lucky on reflexion to have missed out on this thrashing which saw

Almoradi well and truly relegated. Anything else but victory would have sent Almoradi and that’s what duly happened. Godo put Bunol ahead in the second minute, and it looked like big trouble ahead for Almoradi, though the home side, despite all their pressure couldn’t add anything more until in the last quarter of the game, when Rulo scored in the 70th minute, and 12 minutes later was celebrating his hattrick. Almoradi offered barely anything and Bunol could, and should, have had at least doubled their final goal tally. For Almoradi, it’s time to look forward to next sea-

son, but before that, they entertain another side set for the drop in the shape of Muro. Elsewhere in the third division, both Elche Ilicitano and Orihuela have theoretical chances of getting into the play-offs, but they need to win their last two matches and hope that teams above them foul up. Orihuela are six points off the pace, and after a splendid one-nil win at Ontinyent, they face fourth-place Castellon this weekend. Elche Ilicitano got the predicted victory, four-one, over bottom side Segorbe, and now they go to Almazora, with the Elche side five points off the pace.

Another Goal Fest

CD COX 0 CD THADER 5 After their six-nil thrashing of relegation threatened Sant Joan the previous weekend, it was smiles all round again in the CD Thader dressing room last Sunday. The Rojales-based side took another big step to making it into the Preferente play-offs by handing out another drubbing to relegation fodder, this time in the shape of CD Cox, who they

sent down to the Valencia first regional division. Thader were three-nil up within 40 minutes through Lloyd Dummett, Adrián, and Valentín. The result was never in doubt and the only surprise was that Thader only got two more goals in the second half through Villa and substitute Grifo with a couple of minutes remaining. Thader, in third place, are

five points clear of their nearest challengers Hercules and Elda in Preferente Group Four, with Hercules surprisingly held one-all at home to Redovan. And it’s Hercules that go to Thader this weekend knowing that they need to win, whilst Thader would not be that disappointed with a draw, though in their current form, they’ll be confidant of victory.

It’s That Man Again

Parras In Charge

ESPANYOL 0 BARCELONA 3 La Liga leaders Barca had to be patient during Saturday’s win at local city rivals Espanyol before Luis Suarez latched onto a stray backpass to break the deadlock early in the second half. Ivan Rakitic wrapped things up with 15 minutes left before Suarez added a third after some poor defending from the hosts. "Even though it might seem we played much better in the second half than in the first, I was very happy with the team's performance in the first half, and I think this is a well-deserved victory”, said coach Luis Enrique, with his side now entertaining Villarreal this Saturday evening.

REAL MADRID 3 ATLETICO MADRID 0 Cristiano Ronaldo scored another Champions League hattrick as Real Madrid thrashed Atletico Madrid in the semi-final first leg Tuesday to close in on a third final in four years. Real were utterly dominant throughout against their city rivals at the Bernabeu and Atletico only had one shot on target. They will need to pull off something special next week to stop doublechasing Real from ending their European dreams for the fourth straight season.

Marcelo’s Late Rescue

Elche’s coach Alberto Toril was sacked last weekend and replaced by Elche Ilicitano boss Vicente Parras (pictured) after Elche slipped from outside play-off contenders in the Segunda division to being just a point off the relegation zone. It wasn’t just five defeats in the last six outings that has led to Toril’s demise, but the quality of the football that has led to the frustration of the Elche fans. A week earlier Elche president, Diego Garcia, asked about the possible sacking of Toril after a bad defeat at Valladolid, calmly responded by saying that “there is no chance”. Clearly what happened in a dreadful result at home to struggling Almeria last Friday changed his mind (see below). Stepping into the breach for the rest of the season is Elche Ilicitano coach (and former CD Thader player), Vicente Parrias who has taken the Elche youngsters close to getting into the Valencian third division play-offs with a couple of matches remaning. Meanwhile, sporting director José Luis “Chuti” Molina who arrived last summer has joined Toril in leaving the club. Parrias has six matches remaining to secure the Ilicitanos senior side status, starting with a Saturday afternoon trip (4.00 pm kick-off) to second-bottom Mallorca.

A Limp Farewell

ELCHE 2 ALMERIA 3

CD MONTESINOS 7 GRUPO CALICHE 1 Nearly 700 people turned out to celebrate CD Montesinos becoming champions of the Valencia Segunda group 16 division last Sunday, and on the field Monte duly obliged with a final day thrashing of Grupo Caliche. It was full credit to Monte’s players that they chose not to sit on their backsides and relax, but they went for their opponents as if their lives depended on it, as they were three-nil up within a quarter of an hour, with Vaz running rampant again, and eventually getting another hat-trick. Carlos Lorente bagged a couple and Carlos Ventura completed the rout, though the visitors did get a late consolation goal, as Monte started to look ahead to life in the regional first division next season. After the on-pitch celebrations with vast quantities of water and cava, and the presentations of trophies to each player and staff member, the celebrations moved onto the centre of the town (see page 11).

REAL MADRID 2 VALENCIA 1 A late goal from Marcelo secured a late win over Valencia on Saturday to keep the pressure on La Liga title rivals Barcelona. Real took the lead after 27 minutes through a header from Cristiano Ronaldo, but he then saw a second-half penalty saved by Diego Alves, and it looked to have been a costly miss when Valencia midfielder Parejo crashed in an angled free-kick from 25 yards to equalise with just eight minutes left. However, Marcelo produced another late show for Real at the Bernabeu when he cut inside from the left to clip a low shot into the bottom corner which keeps the destiny of the title race in their own hands. Real now go to already-relegated Granada this Saturday night under their boss, Tony Adams.

Alberto Toril’s last match in charge of Elche was a grade A strinker, as the Ilicitanos succumbed to one of their old rivals, Almeria, who have been fighting off relegation for most of the season. The result saw Almeria climb above Elche in the table, and only other results prevented the Ilicitanos from dropping into the relegation zone. After Toril’s sacking (see above), he told reporters that “maybe his departure will do the players some good”, and that’s what the fans will be hoping for after this supine display, with a flattering scoreline as subsitute Malonga pulled one back for Elche a couple of minutes into stoppage time. Almeria’s win took them out of the relegation zone that they had been in since mid-December, and the visitors had all the ideas in the first half and looked like a home side when mdifielder Borja Fernández put them ahead in the 26th minute. Elche had their best spell early in the second half, and deservedly equalised through Pelayo in the 51st minute. Almeria though didn’t have their heads going down, and fought back with goals from Ximo Navarro and Quique which helped secure them victory, and put the tin hat on the nine month stay of ex-Real Madrid youth coach, Alberto Toril, at Elche.

Indy Alonso

Two-time Formula One champion, Spain's Fernando Alonso passed his rookie orientation test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Wednesday, allowing him to try to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 later this month. Alonso turned 50 laps in his morning test session, posting a best lap speed of 219.654 mph. It took less than three hours to pass all three phases of the rookie test on his first oval track. “It was fun, it was a good way to start and reach the speed. A little difficult at the beginning to reach the speeds, but then the next stages it was fine,” he said. “At the moment everything looks good. … Now I think we start the real deal.” The Spanish driver was scheduled to practice another five hours, but rain was expected to cut that session short. After IndyCar driver Marco Andretti set up the No. 29 for Andretti Autosport, Alonso strapped into the bright orange Honda and hit the track and ran several laps, moving gradually past the 200 mph threshold to near 210 mph before heading to the pits. “It was great. He did perfect. Now we can go play a little bit,” said Michael Andretti. “He’s the real deal. I think he’s going to have a really good month.” The Spaniard will attempt to run the Indianapolis 500 later this month, and he hopes the 24 Hours of Le Mans some day. He’s on a quest to win what’s considered the Triple Crown of racing. That includes the Monaco Grand Prix, which he’s already won. This bid at Indianapolis requires him to master new cars and racing styles. “He’s getting the feel of it,” IndyCar legend Mario Andretti said. “He’s doing exactly what he needs to do. The experience that he has should dominate, but the anxiety is still there.”

MotoGP champion Marc Marquez heads for the first of his home Spanish rounds at Jerez this weekend, boosted by a first victory of the season in Austin. With main rival Maverick Vinales making an early exit, the Repsol Honda star was left to extend his perfect COTA victory record and claim a much-needed first podium of the season. Marquez and countryman Vinales could well renew their rivalry on home ground, but it was Vinales' teammate and new title leader Valentino Rossi who won the race a year ago. "I'm happy the next round is back in Spain after three flyaway GPs, because racing at home and in front of my fan club is always special," Marquez said. "Of course our win in Austin gave the whole team more confidence and motivation to keep up the hard work and to try to understand how to further improve our bike's setup, although Jerez is one of the most difficult and tricky circuits from that point of view. "It's kind of an 'old school' track: very short, very narrow, with heavy acceleration points and strong braking areas. You have to make the bike turn well, but you also need good stability under braking, because that's where you can get good lap times. It's a circuit where our opponents are always very fast, but anyway, I think we'll be able to do well if we work well starting on Friday morning.” The Austin victory propelled Marquez up to third in the world championship standings, 18 behind leader Rossi and 12 from the other factory Yamaha of Vinales. Marquez's team-mate Dani Pedrosa also made his first podium appearance of the season in Texas, and is now sixth in the world championship. Pedrosa is also a former Jerez MotoGP winner. "Jerez is a track that I like a lot. It has a bit of everything: tight corners, fast corners, changes of direction, some 'wheelie areas'," he said. "One of my best memories there is when I made my debut in MotoGP (2006) and I finished on the podium. I hope to keep the momentum from Austin and to continue the progress, improving our bike setup more, especially in maintaining a fast rhythm and faster lap time. "Now we know more about the bike, what we need to improve, and what changes we have to make on the setup, so we definitely look forward to taking another step in Jerez. My fan club will be there and we want to have another good Marquez's team-mate Dani Pedrosa also made his first podium appearance of the season in Texas, and is now sixth in the world championship. Lucas Hernandez has signed a new deal with Atletico Madrid that runs until 2022. The 21-year-old defender was a reported target for Manchester United as well as several other top European clubs. "I am very happy to renew with the club I have spent my whole life with," said the French Under-21 international, who has made 20 appearances this season. "It is great news for all Atletico fans, he is a player with enormous potential with a spectacular future to come," said Atletico's sporting director Jose Luis Caminero. Hernandez's brother Theo is also in high demand after a stellar season on loan at Alaves from Atletico Madrid with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester City among those willing to pay his 24m euro release clause. The pair's father Jean-Francois Hernandez also played for Atletico between 2000 and 2001.

BARCA BID

THE FINAL RUN-IN

A 60 million euro offer might be enough for Barcelona to sign Phillipe Courtinho from Liverpool, according to reports in the Spanish media. After previous rejections, the La Liga leaders are set to make another bid, as they look to offload players this summer to make room for new signings, as well as freeing up funds in the transfer market. The 24-year-old would apparently request an annual salary of over six million euro.

GIRO REVERSE

Giro d'Italia organisers have abandoned plans for a best downhill rider category after criticism from riders that the idea was "lifethreatening". The plans would have seen riders timed on 10 downhill sections during the threeweek race, with prizes for each day and the overall fastest descender. Belgian rider Wouter Weylandt died after crashing on a descent during stage three of the 2011 Giro d'Italia. The 100th race starts today.

This weekend’s Premier League matches are spread over four days, with title contenders Spurs and Chelsea bookending another key round of fixtures, writes ALEX TRELINSKI. With three games left, second-placed Tottenham get things going this evening as they can bridge that four point gap behind Chelsea if they beat West Ham United at the London Stadium(9.00 pm kick-off). Spurs are on a run of nine consecutive league wins as they look to pip the Blues to title, but Slaven Bilic’s side will be looking for revenge against Spurs. The Hammers came closest to inflicting what would have been Tottenham’s only league defeat at White Hart Lane – only for Spurs to come back from 2-1 down in stoppage time to claim a 3-2 win in November. Chelsea have dealt well with the split-fixture situation and the points on the table pressure, with a good response every time that their London rivals have bagged a win to temporarily close the gap at the top. Antonio Conte’s side will surely not offer any mercy on Monday night at home to relegation certainties Middlesbrough, though the Teeside team did manage to take a point from Champions League-chasing Manchester City on Sunday with a 2-2 draw at the Riverside Stadium. Though the two Manchester sides could only manage two points from each of their last matches, including an unispiring local derby, they do still have a game in hand on third-placed Liverpool, who are still celebrating that wonderful winning Cam strike at Watford on Monday. City entertain Crystal Palace tomorrow lunchtime, whilst United visit their old friends Arsenal on Sunday. Liverpool also have a Sunday date against Southampton at Anfield, with a glance at the table suggesting the top four will stay where they are come the end of the season(sorry, Man Utd fans!). At the bottom, will be it Hull or Swansea that will join Boro and Sunderland in the Championship next season(I know that Palace, West Ham and Burnley are not yet technically safe!)? I admit a slight personal bias to rooting for Hull, as many years ago I cut my football reporting teeth at Boothferry Park interviewing one of Hull’s star players, a certain Steve McClaren! The Tigers are two points clear of Swansea with a similar goal difference, and they must fancy their chances at home tomorrow to Sunderland, with the Welsh side at home later on to Everton. The final deck of Championship matches is being played out this Sunday(1.00 pm kick-off), with all the issues sorted out at the top, short of the play-off teams working out who they might meet in the semi-finals. The main focus is at the bottom as to whether Birmingham, Nottm Forest, or Blackburn will join Wigan and Rotherham in League One next season. I fancy Forest to have the best chance to stay up, as they entertain Ipswich, whilst Birmingham under Harry Houdini(two points above the drop zone and a good goal difference) go to Bristol City, and Blackburn go to Brentford. I suspect the time is up for the Ewood Park outfit who must dreaming of those old days of Shearer and Dalglish!
